Pero hindi pa po confirmed so wait and see pa muna tayo. :)

Police secure Transco towers
By Lino dela Cruz
Iligan correspondent
ILIGAN CITY---The Philippine National Police (PNP), in coordination with the Philippine Army, has tightened security measures to protect the transmission towers of National Power Corporation (NPC), following the series of bombings last week by lawless elements.
Sr. Superintendent Virgilio Ranes, after a security meeting with the officers of the Philippine Army's 103rd Brigade and Mayor Lawrence Cruz, said additional security measures were taken to secure the safety of transmission towers within the jurisdiction of this city.
However, no details of the security measures were revealed. Last week, at least three transmission towers were bombed by lawless group in Barangay Pugaan here near the boundary of Misamis Oriental, and in Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, and another one in Barangay Sugod, Marawi City that caused power interruption in some parts of Northern Mindanao.
Power has been restored as of last Friday, according to an NPC spokesman for Lanao area. Earlier, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) vehemently denied being involved in the bombings and said it resented accusations that "a lost command" from their ranks had perpetrated these actions.
Transco said it is coordinating closely with the military and police in protecting the towers and assured that round the clock repairs are made to ensure that the towers won't compromise power service, which they said were not affected by the attacks.

davaoeagle March 19th, 2007, 11:02 AM Impressive Projects for NorMin!!! Hopefully all of those plans will be implemented as to secure NorMin's Place as Mindanao's Business Capital & Biggest Economy:banana:
Just to set the record straight, it would be more apt and safe for you to claim NorMin as Mindanao's biggest economy.
CDO or NorMin to be the business capital of Mindanao is very unsubstantiated. Even the the national private and public institutions' heads give that title to Davao and nowere else in Mindanao. Should CDO or NorMin boast of Mindanao-wide covering offices and government institutions more that what Davao currently hosts then you deserve the title, but it's not apparent in the time being. You better check your facts first.
Your statements are rather inciting another city versus city kind of discussion and we don't want that to happen between Davao and CDO. A fight between these 2 Mindanao cities is the least of your cares because first and foremost you are not from anyone of the two cities. Davao and CDO are allies and not enemies like you want to usher here. Mindanaone is not coined by a Davaoeno civic and business leader for nothing.

the attack failed to disrupt power supply because of Transco’s back up system. im not sure if the interruption in cdo was connected with the incident.
Alingatong March 19th, 2007, 11:37 AM Pagkakaalam ko, yong ibang tower na binomba caused power interruptions as far as Cotabato and Davao areas. Pero na-restore naman kaagad ng Transco.
g0Rs March 19th, 2007, 11:40 AM ^^ Atleast TransCo was able to restore the power that quick.

Fact is NorMin is the Biggest Economy in Mindanao-an undisputed fact for 3-4years running NOW and I know this because I've seen it personally in the Gov't records. By the way this is with regard to REGIONAL GRDP.
And I know it bothers you that someone OUTSIDE Mindanao and in Metro Manila recognizes this. This means more and more people are aware that NorMin trully is the trade/Services Capital of the whole Mindanao.
So if you don't support NorMin having this ACHIEVEMENT then don't bash me here in the Iligan or CDO thread because it is my every right to RECOGNIZE the regions achievement.
By the way I post here because our family has a huge property in Camigiun and some properties in CDeO and I am really happy that we have properties in NorMin because I'll invest in them.
By the way I don't even want to mention the city you want to promote because I don't want to tarnish this thread I only want to promote Iligan & I want to do it without slandering other cities.

No we are not trying to misquote anything here or perhaps not reviewing any sources. Its not even about city versus city coz we're speaking about regional economy. Alright, DAVAO CITY is already an established city and most private business centers are there. But the gov't facts shows how region10 is pacing the economy in the island of Mindanao...and it shows that it is already the fastest growing region in Mindanao in terms exports and also capital investments poured into while region 11, where DAVAO CITY is, is second...and its been for the last 3 or 4 years now i think...maybe u should look at the facts also yourself so you will know the real news...
Nationally, region 10 is behind number 1 NCR and number 2 CAR respectively...
Lastly, a central economy is not dictated by the number of private and gov't offices established but it is shown by how much money is being poured into and the products that are being sold out or exported.
I respect you for being defensive about your city...and we are not city against city in the CDO or ILIGAN CITY THREAD...we are even praising the other city threads that also posted their growth in their respective cities.
g0Rs March 19th, 2007, 02:19 PM Do you think they can finish it in September?
I'm positive they'll be able to open the mall by Spetember in time for the celebration of the month long city fiesta.
TONZI March 19th, 2007, 03:04 PM september? i dont thnk so coz the whole fourth floor is not done yet and there are still more to do about the back side...and not to mention the four-floor carpark...perhaps in time for december or january...
g0Rs March 19th, 2007, 03:39 PM ^^ i'm still optomistic. it's still 6 months away from the expected opening date.

TONZI March 19th, 2007, 05:46 PM HISTORY
The city has its beginnings in the village of Bayug, 2.5 kilometers north of the present Poblacion. It was the earliest pre-Spanish settlement of native sea dwellers, known as Maragats. In the later part of the 16th century, they were subdued by the Visayan migrants from the island kingdom of Panglao. These migrants, led by Pedro Manuel Manook established Bayug as the earliest Christian settlement in the area sometime between 1597 and 1609.
Population growth and safety eventually forced the settlers to move to safer and better forts. One was built in 1632 and another in 1872. Both became the sites of the present Poblacion. From being merely a small district in the Department of Mindanao and Sulu, Philippine Islands in 1903, it grew into a municipality in the ten unified province of Lanao. On June 16, 1950, it became a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act 525 signed into by the late President Elpidio Quirino.
The utilization of the Maria Cristina Falls into a hydroelectric power generating plant in 1952, hastened the urbanization of the city. Industries were established and more people came to settle. The city marked its first one hundred thousand population in 1970, when it posted a population of 104,493. Twenty-five years later, in 1995, a total population of 203,004 was recorded. Simultaneous with its population growth, is the increase in the city’s revenue. In 1983, it was reclassified as a highly urbanized city due to its impressive collection performance.
These major developments in the city were made possible by able and hardworking leaders since its creation in 1898. Its first president under the Aguinaldo Revolutionary Government was Carlito Jariol who served from 1898 to 1900. Its first Municipal Mayor was Jorge Ramiro (1936-1940), while its first City Mayor was Benito Ong (1948-1953). Its longest serving mayor was Camilo P. Cabili, who served Iligan from 1960 to 1984 and from 1988 to 1992 while the shortest service was rendered by Esperidion Sagrado, who was appointed city mayor for the period July 15-17, 1992. Table 1.1.1 shows the List of Mayors of Iligan City since its creation.
For the past decade, the city has been the more important activity center in North Central Mindanao. It is the center of major industries, commercial and educational establishments. It was dubbed as the “Industrial Center of the South.” Recently, it has become a major tourist destination. Since its birth in the 16th century, it has remained a Visayan dominated area in this part of the country. It has, however, retained its role as a friendly neighbor to the cultural communities in its vicinities. It is identified as a growth pole in Mindanao.

The city must first provide the needed infrastructures and the business environment for the IT industry if the city of Iligan must move ahead in the competition to host IT industries like call centers, outsourcing and medical transcription among others.

davaoeagle March 19th, 2007, 07:43 PM No we are not trying to misquote anything here or perhaps not reviewing any sources.
If you read my post closely enougn you would know that I said not to you but to Sera that NorMin can lay claim to the number one economy in Mindanao, 3 years in the run- after your city of Iligan was re-alligned with CDO, while Region 11 which originally composed of Davao and the booming GenSan was reconfigured leaving Davao Region as the lone province in Region 11. So the title Mindanao's biggest economy is all yours and we won't mind but to be the business capital? Neither CDO nor your city is ripe for the title at this time and dunno if it happens in the next millenium.
WawaY[625] March 19th, 2007, 07:53 PM Pagkakaalam ko, yong ibang tower na binomba caused power interruptions as far as Cotabato and Davao areas. Pero na-restore naman kaagad ng Transco.\
actually sa pagkakaalam ko di nagka power interruption sa amin..pero malamang nag low-power nga kasi nung dumaan ako sa substation ng Davao LIght, naka on yung plant nila (na pang back up ng city in case maputol ang power sa labas)
davaoeagle March 19th, 2007, 07:58 PM Fact is NorMin is the Biggest Economy in Mindanao-an undisputed fact for 3-4years running NOW and I know this because I've seen it personally in the Gov't records.
Fact is having the biggest economy as a region in Mindanao doesn't accord NorMin as Mindanao's Trade and Services Centre? Most trading and services centres either private or government-run are hosted by Davao in the time being and as a matter of fact it is the de facto capital of Mindanao owing to its being the biggest economy for a single city in Mindanao. If that is not acceptable to you then how much more for uswho have been leading Mindanao since the 1930s and up to this day and age still painting a good picture for the whole of this deplorable island.
I'm not bashing you and bashing is not my cup of tea especially to you who I don't know from Adam. You sound knowlegeable in your posting and I know you love CDO but you also know that there are other people willing to buy time to put things in proper place if need be.

Cagayan de Oro City (21 March) -- Iligan City Police Director P/S Supt. Virgilio Ranes said the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the City has intensified its enforcement of the gun ban by confiscating eleven various firearms in their area of responsibility.
“We have filed a case against the gun owners for violating the gun ban,” he added.
The Police Chief said there have been no reports of existing private armies or any activity that would pose a threat to free and orderly elections in their area.
“The series of transmission tower bombings in that recently occurred in Lanao were not election-related per initial report of the on-going investigation,” Ranes stressed. (PIA 10)

g0Rs March 21st, 2007, 11:42 AM POC ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR 2006
By: EAMayormita
POC and Coordinating Agencies
March 21, 2007
In its effort to take the lead in the pursuit of excellence in promoting the best Peace and Order Council practices, Iligan City has once again earned the privilege to represent Region 10 in the nationwide search for the Best Peace and Order Council (POC).
We take pride in presenting the modest accomplishments of the city’s Peace and Order Council for the Calendar Year 2006.
Our POC has conducted regular meetings, mostly presided by the Mayor as Chairperson, with sectoral groups such as NGOs, the media, professional, civic and people’s organizations and the Barangay chairpersons contributing to the POC’s efficiency and effectiveness.
With the local PNP as major player in the implementation of crime prevention and law enforcement, we claim a number of arrests and interventions safeguarding the city against crime.
The POC has mobilized the PNP, the City Prosecutor and the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology for the effective implementation of its programs. The Iligan City Fire Station took prompt action in cases of fire prevention and suppression. The Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council and Emergency 811 responded without reservation to local calamities and extended help to as far as Leyte and Zamboanga provinces in the exercise of their duties.
The POC has mobilized government offices and Criminal Justice System agencies and has organized Barangay Peace and Order Councils which are currently functional.
In terms of sectoral involvement and resource allocation, the POC has sought the participation of NGOs and civic organizations such as the Philippine National Red Cross, the Bantay Bayan Foundation, Incorporated, the Guardians Brotherhood, Incorporated and the Community Police Action Group for material and technical support. Financial support from the private sector amounted to PHP 52,000.
The Iligan City Police Office’s 295-member workforce have completed 346 training courses/seminars and received 89 awards and 321 commendations. It has sustained its special forces: Special Operations Unit (the local equivalent of the SWAT Team) and the K-9 Unit.
The ICPO’s exemplary performance has been backed by a total of PHP 3,610,209.60 of which PHP 262,209.60 has come from the higher headquarters’ MOOE fund support with the remaining PHP 3,348,000.00 from the LGU and NGOs. This has helped sustain the operational and administrative requirements of ICPO. Actual expenditures for POC operation for CY 2006 have reached PHP 122,883,744.00.
In its anti-crime efforts, comparative crime statistics has cited a crime solution efficiency of 96.15% of all reported cases. To encourage further community involvement in its anti-criminality campaign, Text Kontra Krimen (7004276) was launched on July 31, 2006.
In matters of counter-insurgency, we have strengthened the joint efforts of all sectors involved in realizing common goals related to peace and order, public safety and security programs and projects in the area. We have tapped civilian volunteer organizations and conducted trainings of deputized Barangay Tanods/CVOs.
We have generated citizens’ involvement and support through activities mobilizing the community by implementing programs and projects with the participation of coordinating agencies. Community-based organizations have rendered material and technical support to these ends.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan, conferred as Region 10’s 2006 Best Performing Sangguniang Panlungsod, qualifying itself for the National Finals for Highly Urbanized Cities, has adopted twenty-two (22) resolutions and four (4) ordinances related to peace and order.
Monthly deployment of 80 sweepers, 15 landscapers and 10 ALTF enforcers of Information/Education Campaign on Proper Solid Waste Management, as well as the enforcement of Anti-littering ordinances, were implemented. Civic groups have taken part in our environmental enhancement efforts as well.
We have set our modest goals within realistic timeframes to conclude that in its overall performance, the Iligan Peace and Order Council has served its purpose in implementing programs suited to the needs within its area of responsibility.

I think it's high time to build a new public market for Iligan. A 3-level structure would be nice. I agree. They should implement a clean, dry, organized, and visually appealing facility.

Fire razes market, damages at P3-M
By Lino dela Cruz
Iligan Correspondent
ILIGAN CITY -- An hour and a half fire destroyed a public market here at dawn Wednesday, displacing hundreds of stall owners and vendors.
Fire Marshall Benigno Amomonpon Jr. said he received a fire call at about 3:15 a.m. and immediately dispatched fire trucks to the Pala-o supermarket where the fire was in progress.
Mayor Lawrence Cruz immediately sought the assistance of fire trucks from Global Steelworks and nearby towns including Cagayan de Oro City Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) upon learning of the outbreak.
The fire was put off at about 4:30 a.m. but about 60 percent of the public market was destroyed. Initial damages were placed at P3 million though no one was reported hurt in the incident, according to fire investigators.
Pala-o market is one of the two public markets in this city and its several decades-old structure contributed to the fast spread of the fire, the firemen said.
The City Economic Enterprises Department (CEED), which oversees collection of market stall and vendor fees, was destroyed.
Investigation is still going on to determine the cause of the fire. City officials also have yet to disclose plans to rehabilitate the decades-old public market.

Jeeps to charge P6
THE .50 centavo provisional fare reduction for public utility jeepneys (PUJ) in Northern Mindanao has been approved, but will end on July this year.
Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) Chairman Thompson Lantion said this during the regional transport summit in Cagayan de Oro Wednesday, attended by around a hundred stakeholders of the region's transport industry.
When the provisional decrease--which brings the current PUJ fare to P6 flat--expires on July 31, Lantion said it was up to the transport groups in the region to decide whether an extension was necessary.
Fuel price, he said, remains the barometer for any changes in fare amount.
Virgilio Valmoria, leader of the moderate Transport Federation of Cagayan de Oro (Trafeco), said his group supports extending the deadline, citing no new changes in fuel prices as of press time.
Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, chairman of the City Council committee on public utility, welcomed the move, but urged LTFRB to assess whether a new round of fare reduction would be possible.
"I think the .50 reduction is fair. However, if the prices of oil continue to decrease, then LTFRB should again consider lowering the fare rate," Nacaya told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in a text message.
The councilor recalled that the City Council had asked LTFRB twice to lower PUJ fare rates in response to slowly stabilizing fuel prices in the recent months.
Fare reduction on other transport utilities such as buses and taxicabs would be tackled in the coming days, said LTFRB Northern Mindanao Regional Director Mandangan Darimbang.
The fare reduction also covers the 20 percent discount granted to students and senior citizens, bringing their fare to only P5. (DVA and JPN)

Jail visitors freed by kin
By Lino Dela Cruz
Iligan Correspondent
ILIGAN CITY -- At least 25 visitors or "dalaw" held inside the city jail here by their prisoner-relatives since last Wednesday were "released" Thursday morning.
A mass protest of sorts was held to denounce the alleged lack of food and refusal of jail guards to provide rubbing alcohol for their skin ailments, among other complaints.
Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) Warden Rey Baldon denied that the visitors were being held "hostage" by the prisoners led by a certain Modecilla, Torres, and Tumanda.
He said the visitors have stayed since last March 21 inside the jail on their own to support the protest being made by the prisoners.
The visitors included an undetermined number of women and children complained about the lack of food and barricaded their premises.
However, Baldon said the budget for the food is only P40 per day per prisoner. The inmates also demanded longer visiting hours for their relatives.
Most of the inmates also debunked claims that the relatives were being held against their will.
As of Thursday, BJMP officials and City Mayor Lawrence Cruz facilitated the release of the visitors after being held for 10 hours since 5 p.m. Wednesday.
No one was reported hurt in the incident and the complaints of the prisoners are being looked into such as food, water, visitorial rights and others, said Cruz.

Alingatong March 24th, 2007, 03:30 AM COAA hikes gold tally to 69
By Lynde Salgados
TUBOD, Lanao Norte -- There was no official results yet of the medal standing.
But the 400-strong Cagayan de Oro Athletic Association could feel now it has overtaken hottest rival Iligan for the overall supremacy in the 2007 Palarong Pampook here at Mindanao Civic Center.
With only four remaining events in basketball, lawn tennis, table tennis and sipa takraw still in progress Thursday, COAA has accumulated a total of 69 golds in the initial tally. Just 5 golds short of matching last year's effort of 74 that paved the way for COAA to clinch the overall title.
"Mag-cheer na lang kita sa nabilin natong mga atleta nga nagdula pa then, we'll have to wait and see what will happen next in the awarding ceremony. Kay simbako lang nga dili molusot ang Iligan kita man gyod ang mo-kampeyon," said athletic director Delia Agbon in a briefing with the COAA coaches Thursday night.
Basketball coach Boy Dacoco is confident the elementary and high school dribblers from Xavier University and Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School could deliver more golds for COAA's cause.
"Sure na sab na'ng table tennis kay ilang saligando nga babaye mopilde man gani og mga lalaki nga Class A sa Cagayan de Oro," said local UN frontman Dario Hernane referring to Asian age-group medalist Ian Nietes Lariba.
With the other international campaigner Francis Casey Alcantara being allowed to strut wares in lawn tennis, COAA delegation has high expectation to surpass its 74-gold finish last year.
COAA's 35-23-12 gold-silver-bronze harvest in elementary rivalry was inspired by the strong showing of swimming boys and girls (16 golds), gymnastics (9) and taekwondo (3). Its secondary's 34-23-18 medal blitz was highlighted again by COAA's sterling performance in gymnastics (10 golds), chess (4), arnis (4), taekwondo (4) and badminton (2).

Aboitiz earmarks P200M for feedmill in Iligan
Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc (AEV), the listed investment holding company of the Aboitiz family, is setting aside P200 million for the establishment of a new feedmill in Iligan City.
AEV chief operating officer Erramon Aboitiz said the new facility will be the group’s second, next to the one in Tarlac which underwent expansion in 2005.
The new plant will have an estimated capacity of 10,000 tons of feed per month, Aboitiz said.
AEV, through wholly-owned unit Pilmico Foods Corp., earlier sold to ABF Overseas Ltd. its stake in yeast producer Pilmico-Mauri Foods Corp. for P100 million.
Pilmico-Mauri was formed in 1995 as a joint venture between Pilmico and Burns Philp Co. of Australia to manufacture yeast and other bakery ingredients.
In 2004, Burns Philp sold its yeast division, including its stake in Pilmico-Mauri, to the parent company of ABF Overseas, UK-based multinational Associated British Foods Plc.
AEV said the divestment of its yeast business is in line with Pilmico’s continuing efforts to further concentrate on growing its flour milling business and the feeds and swine businesses of its subsidiary, Fil-Am Foods Inc.
AEV reported a 6.3 percent drop in its net profit in the nine months ending September 2006 to P2.4 billion from the restated net income in the same period in 2005.
The holding firm also has interests in banking (Union Bank of the Philippines and International Exchange Bank), power, transport and food.

Alingatong March 25th, 2007, 07:45 AM POC ACCOMPLISHMENTS FOR 2006
By: EAMayormita
POC and Coordinating Agencies
We have set our modest goals within realistic timeframes to conclude that in its overall performance, the Iligan Peace and Order Council has served its purpose in implementing programs suited to the needs within its area of responsibility.

g0Rs March 25th, 2007, 04:06 PM Gatchalian-led Mabuhay Vinyl gets BOI incentives
BY MA. ELISA P. OSORIO
The Philippine Star
Gatchalian-led Mabuhay Vinyl Corp. (MVC), manufacturer of hydrochloric acid and sodium hypochloride, has been given incentives by the Board of Investments (BOI) for its P565-million expansion project in Iligan City. The listed company is the only manufacturer of caustic soda and liquid chlorine in the country.
Caustic soda is used as a raw material in the manufacture of soaps, detergents, textiles and paper. It is also used in water softening and treatment, refining petroleum products, and washing beer and softdrink bottles while liquid chlorine is used as a bleaching agent by paper and textile industries, drinking water purification, and water treatment.
The steady increase in the price of caustic soda in the international market has prompted MVC to embark on an expansion project. The Phase 2 project of MVC is expected to produce 24,000 metric tons per year of caustic soda, 50,000 metric per ton of hydrochloric acid and 5,500 metric per ton per year of liquid chlorine.
The Phase 2 will be ready for commercial operation on June 2008 and is expected to generate almost 200 new jobs. The project, classified as pioneer based on the magnitude of investments, is registered as an expanding producer.
The project is under the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) retention, expansion and diversification (R.E.D.) program, an inclusion in the 2006 Investment Priorities Plan. The RED program refers to activities of existing investors that are encouraged for retention, expansion and diversification.
The project is expected to help meet the increasing domestic demand for chlor-alkali chemicals in the country.
The approved project involves the use of the modern ion exchange membrane (IEM) technology, n-BiTAC, which was co-developed by Chlorine Engineers Corp., and Tosoh Corp. of Japan.
The new technology involves the use of ultra low power, slat and steam consumption which will help reduce cost making the plant more competitive. Also, the IEM process was rated to be at par with the best technologies in the world.
MVC manufactures and distributes basic and intermediate chemicals and has more than 40 years of experience in the business of chemical production.
MVC is the biggest domestic producer of caustic soda, and together with its subsidiary, Philippine Resins Industries Inc., is the biggest domestic producer of PVC resins. It also enjoys a dominant position in the local hydrochloric acid and chlorine markets.

g0Rs March 26th, 2007, 07:55 AM LTO-X posts 10.93% increase in revenue collection
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob
Cagayan de Oro City -- A total collection of Php274.035 million was posted by the Land Transportation Office in Northern Mindanao (LTO-X), last year, noting an increase of 10.93% compared to Php247.026 million it collected in 2005.
"Part of our positive performance could be attributed to our best practices, particularly, our focus on the development program of our personnel," LTO-X Regional Director Porcawa B. Dia said.
It could also be due to their continuing program of instituting anti-corruption measures to make sure the government resources are being deployed to the welfare of the people rather than landing in the pockets of a few, he said.
Meanwhile, Dia said the highest collection was posted by the LTO-X Regional Office with Php73.35 million followed by the Puerto Extension Office with Php52.469 million, Iligan City, Php29.191 million, Malaybalay City, Php22.760 million, Valencia City, Php17.054 million and Don Carlos Bukidnon, Php15.772 million.

Likewise, registration of new "For Hire" MV's increased by 43.87%, from 212 to 305. But renewals went down by 2.05%, from 17,962 to 17,594.
Registration of new government MV's also increased by 3.60%, from 250 to 259 while renewals went up by 7.04%, from 3,454 to 3,697. However, those of diplomatic MV's remained at two (2) for both 2005 and 2006.
Furthermore, licenses and permits issued by LTO-X in the region, last year, went up by 12.55%, from 113,865 to 128,157.
New licenses, particularly, increased by 18.24%, from 54,222 to 64,11 and renewals by 8.41%, from 57,382 to 62,210. But conversions of licenses from student and non-professional to professional went down by 18.75%, from 2,261to 1,837.
Again, the number of apprehensions increased by 89.38%, from 13,484 to 25,536 and those on impounded vehicles by 76.80%, from 1,539 to 2,721.

g0Rs March 26th, 2007, 08:08 AM Platinum Group eyes $200M in export sales
By Marianne V. Go
The Philippine Star 03/26/2007
The Platinum Group Metals Corp. (PGMC) is projecting an initial export revenue this year of $200 million from an initial production of 10 million pounds of nickel ore per annum from its two ferro-nickel smelting plants in Manticao, Misamis Oriental and in Iligan City (Lanao del Norte).
It’s major buyers are Australia’s BHP Billiton, China’s Dong Da Smelting Group and Japan’s Toyota Tshuho/Nippon Yakin.
However, PGMC is confidently projecting its export revenue to hit P1.2 billion by 2009.
PGMC is set to inaugurate on April 17 the Philippines’ first ferro-nickel smelter plant, according to PGMC chairman Ramon R. Atayde and PGMC president Rafael M. Atayde.
They have asked President Arroyo to grace the inauguration of the Iligan plant.
In an interview with The STAR, PGMC chairman Atayde disclosed that PGMC spent close to $50 million for its ferro-nickel plants in Manticao and Iligan City.
PGMC’s Iligan plant was formerly the Maria Cristina Chemicals Inc. (MCCI) calcium carbide plant. PGMC acquired the MCCI plant from the Guevarra Family in December 2006 and converted it into a ferro-nickel smelting plant whose vertical kilns have been operational since March 3 this year.
PGMC’s Manticao plant, on the other hand, has been converted from a ferro-chrome plant to a ferro-nickel smelting plant.
The Manticao plant is slated to start calcining operation by April 9 this year.
According to the two Ataydes, PGMC’s ferro-nickel smelters would add value to the mining industry by giving even small miners a ready market for their nickel ore even at low production volume.
They explained that because of the plant’s location in Mindanao, even small mines in Indonesia could be suppliers of ore to their plant because of the proximity of PGMC’s smelters in Mindanao.

SME EOY: Victoria Q. Congmon, Sunburst Fried Chicken
For establishing, sustaining and maintaining its prestigious name as a chicken restaurant for over 35 years now. It was established out of the need for the family to survive (rearing 8 children in the family) and Mrs. Congmon’s passion for good cooking. It was primarily a family business where only Mrs. Congmon was the cook and the father and children were the service staff. Mrs. Congmon (now 87 years old) had large exposure to the food industry in her early adult years that inspired her to do her own business.
Founded in 1971 under the name of A & C Chicken and Pizza House with initially 4 tables to ten tables then to 25 tables under its new name, Sunburst Fried Chicken. Today, it has 10 franchised outlets located in Cebu, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro City, Pagadian and Dipolog City with the original restaurant in Iligan City as the only remaining company-owned restaurant.
