Kung matapos tong project na 'to, sa palagay ko ito na ang pinakamagandang Nature's park sa buong pinas. Kahit nga walang amenities, parkeng-parke na ang dating. At ang ganda pa ng magiging centerpiece - The Majestic Maria Cristina Falls - The Mother of industries. :)

Rehab, water projects slated for N. Mindanao

THE regional office of the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) said the government is stepping up its drive for more infrastructures in an effort to bring about more progress for the people.

Regional Neda Director Myra V. Balandra said 153 projects have been listed by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in the region to be included in 2007-2010 Rehabilitation/Restoration of Small Irrigation Projects (RRSIP) in Mindanao-Region 10 Component.

"This is in response to the 2006 State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Arroyo, whereby she committed Php200 million per month for the rehabilitation/restoration of small irrigation projects in the Mindanao Super Agribusiness Region (MSAR)," she said.

If all these projects will be implemented as programmed, a total of 17,613 hectares of rice lands will have been restored to irrigation, which will exceed the target set in the 2004-2010 Medium-Term Regional Development Plan (MTRDP) by three percent.

A total of P1.62 billion will be required to finance these rehabilitation/restoration projects expected to benefit some 23,260 farmer-beneficiaries (FBs), she said.

Endorsed during the recent 74th Full Council Meeting of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in the region where Balandra sits as Vice Chairperson, the plan was favorably recommended by the Infrastructure and Utilities Committee (InfraCom) of RDC owing to their responsiveness to the President's commitment to the MSAR and the 2004-2010 MTRDP of the region.

The allocation (peso), area for restoration in hectares (ha.), and the number of farmer-beneficiaries (FB) by the end of 2010 per province are as follows:
Bukidnon, P600,819 for 5,856 ha. and 6,582 FBs, Misamis Oriental, P505,905 for 3,775 ha. and 3,319 FBs, Lanao del Norte, P239,670 for 5,590 ha. and 4,933 FB, Misamis Occidental, P201,916 for 1,762 ha. and 7,689 FBs, Cagayan de Oro City, P39,512 for 360 ha. and 301 FBs and Camiguin, P29,635 for 270 ha. and 436 FBs.

The highest number of these irrigation projects as identified by the InfraCom is in the province of Bukidnon with 56, followed by Lanao del Norte, 32, Misamis Oriental, 30, Misamis Occidental, 23, Camiguin, seven and Cagayan de Oro City five.

Balandra said jobs generated from the rehabilitation/restoration of these RIS/CIS are expected to reach a total of 32,698, i.e., 7,525 in 2007, some 8,272 in 2008, some 9,178 in 2009 and 7,723 in 2010.

Iligan trims GenSan in NBC

Iligan Crusaders opened up their campaign in the 2007 NBC National Cup basketball tournament on a winning note Monday by turning back MP GenSan, 74-67, at the Almendras gym here.

The Crusaders used a blistering 11-1 run in the last 2:09 of the game to deal Manny Pacquiao’s Warriors their third defeat in four games in the tournament supported by Sulpicio Lines, Spring Cooking Oil, San Miguel Beer, Caltex, Sun Cellular, Firefly Lightings, Yahoo Philippines, Molten, Nature’s Spring, Basketball TV and Viva Prime Channel.

After trailing for more than three quarters, the Crusaders banked on Harold Sta. Cruz, and Marlon Kalaw to turn the game around with that big finish.

Former Pagadian star Bong Marata made a rousing debut with the Crusaders, scoring 18 points. But it was Sta. Cruz’s nine points, 13 rebounds and 3 blocks performance that helped bail out the Crusaders.

NBC action continues today with Montana Davao facing Valencia Golden Harvest.

The scores:

Iligan 74—Marata 18, Hardin 12, Go 10, Sta. Cruz 9, Kalaw 7, Paterno 5, Ayodelle 5, Booker 4, Guiyab 4, Gatchalian 0, Mangahas 0.

Gensan 67—Menor 19, Locsin 10, Coronado 8, Farochillen 6, Medalla 6, Sumampong 4, Ramos 3, Tadena 3, Denison 3, Mejorada 0, Calo 0.

Quarters: 7-25, 27-36, 49-56, 74-67

Iligan opens week of peace

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/25 March) – The city’s peace advocates spruced up their vehicles with white balloons in a motorcade from the city plaza to Linamon in Lanao del Norte and Dalipuga and back to the plaza for the program to open this year’s Iligan Week of Peace. "This is a celebration of peace," declared Juanito Enriquez Jr., chair of
Civil Society Organization Forum for Peace (CSOFP), a network of non-governmental and individual peace-builders in Lanao.

This initiative to mainstream peace-building is in its third year now and
takes roots from community-based and organizational stand against war. Its theme today is "duyog sa pagpanday sa kalinaw” (join us in building peace).

"War affected the lives of innocent civilians. Inspite of these, Iligan city
maintains its image as a peace zone," said Enriquez.

As a peace zone, the city council passed Resolution No. 04-58 declaring every last week of March as "week of peace in Iligan City."

The resolution states that Iligan is a zone of peace in Mindanao and an important refuge and sanctuary for displaced communities from both Muslims and Christians.

Ted Juanite of Pagsabua sa Kalasan (PSK) Inc., read separate statements of Al Haj Murad Ebrahim, chair of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and Alexander Marohombsar Lacawa from the National Unified Command of Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).

"Peace is achieved when there is genuine de-escalation of violence and there is ultimate ceasefire when police forces become police civilian in character," Murad said.

Lacawa's statement mentioned "that MNLF has organized itself as a unified command. With peace agreements, we are compelled to fight war against war and for sustainable peace."

"As we renew our ties, we also celebrate this week of peace in friendships with Mindanawons, " Lacawa further stated.

Abel Moya, program manager of Pakigdait Inc. which focuses on the Balik Inudaran campaign, said on peace-builders as a minority group: “We may be few who took the road less traveled by but we must continue embracing the challenges of culture for peace against violence and threats."

"We may be different but we have the same objective: to achieve peace," said Engr. Alejandro Rondez, barangay councilor and vice chair of Iligan Barangay Councils (ILBACO).

Forming into a circle, the participants at the plaza sang “Let there be Peace" as they released the white balloons.

At 12 noon, peace advocates joined a hundred participants in the first Joint GRP-MILF Peace Advocacy and Information Drive at Elena Tower Inn. The Advocacy "tackled basic orientation on the ceasefire mechanisms.

"This day-long peace drive is primarily directed to 103rd Brigade soldiers to educate them about the ceasefire mechanism," said Brig. Gen. Benjamin Dolorfino, chair of the government peace panel in the Ad Hoc Joint Action Group (AHJAG).

The meeting also discussed the functions of the CCCH, International
Monitoring Team, Local Monitoring Team, AHJAG, and of the comnunity-based Bantay Ceasefire."

“Soldiers and MILF rebels around will also have solidarity night for them to get along with each other towards strengthening the ceasefire structures,” he said.

Also part of the week of peace celebration was the opening at 2 p.m. at the city plaza of Laro ng Lahi or indigenous games;

The week of peace will end with a civil society general assembly on March 30.

The week-long activities are being supported by the city government, Catholic Agency for Overseas Development (CAFOD) and VSO Peace Mindanao.

Creating beauty
By Ria Francisco-Prieto

Last updated 00:43am (Mla time) 03/30/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Every year, during Philippine Fashion Week, the country’s best and brightest designers gather for days of pomp and pageantry, of passionate fashion statements and maddeningly beautiful shows that set Manila’s most stylish denizens all abuzz.

Runway Productions’ powerhouse tandem of Joey and Audie Espino, who have been at the helm of this fashion bonanza for the past 10 years, deserves kudos for putting on the biggest show yet this year.

Recently, I went backstage with Avon Color, the official makeup sponsor of Philippine Fashion Week ’07, to speak with Avon Color makeup artist Jen Delica, whose creative input helped this year’s makeup artists come up with looks that added oomph to the outfits.

It was most exciting to find out how fashion and beauty trends are crafted by some of the best designers who hail, not from cosmopolitan Manila, but from other parts of the country.

With their collections’ vibrant colors, funky prints and oversized accessories, the design statements of artists from Davao, Iligan, Cebu, Iloilo and Ilocos were heard loud and clear at the Rockwell Tent last weekend.

Davao, for one, is fast becoming a hub for fashion. Davaoeños Emi-Alexander Englis, Benjie Panizales and Eric Sapaula offered Fashion Week devotees an unconventional mix of rich textures, angular cuts and bold messages, with Avon Color completing their design aesthetic.

Englis said he derived fashion inspiration from the square. His mostly white pieces, however, did not look boxy or boring at all, and can even go from day to night.

With structured details and shell accessories, his collection was a relaxing set that evoked a tropical feel.

Panizales created a retro space-age look by fusing rugged materials such as corduroy and velvet into short dresses with green, red and blue accents.

Davao’s laidback vibe was evident in the clean lines, creating a funky set of still very classy pieces.

Witty phrases

Getting his message across quite literally was Sapaula, whose tops were emblazoned with witty phrases and questions that promoted environmental awareness. Complementing the shirts were patchwork pants and short skirts made of plaid and ethnic printed fabric woven in Davao, for a truly hippie look.

“I want people to reflect about the fashion and beauty industries,” he said. “As much as possible, let’s not be frivolous, because we may be affecting the environment that way.”

Light and natural-looking makeup was key to achieving balance with the very stylized outfits. Avon Color’s liquid foundation in skintone shades served as a base for the bronzed faces, while Avon Color Powder Blush Duo in pink and rose tones made the more dewy faces glow.

Another designer from Mindanao, Lagat showed promise. He said his collection was a tribute to women who celebrate their independence. His blousy tops and short shorts in metallic colors were clearly made for partying. A native of Iligan city, Lagat injected elegance by using a shiny brocade material handwoven by a Muslim tribe.

The eyes for Lagat’s collection were given a sexy, rock-and-roll edge with the help of Avon Color Astonishing Length Waterproof Mascara, and a slightly smudged up Glimmerstick in black for a smoky effect...

'Dimaks' leads cast in tough Iligan Open

OLIVER Dimakiling, one of the country's hottest International Masters from Davao City, leads a strong cast of players vying for around P350,000 in total cash prizes of the 2007 Iligan Open chess tournament which gets underway Friday at the Chung Hua School in Iligan City.

The 25-year-old Dimakiling, who scored heavily for the RP men's team in the last World Chess Olympiad in Spain, is expected to be seeded No.1 in this five-day event.

"Unlike late last year nga rigid akong dula sa gawas, medyo naka-bakasyon `ta gamay. I just hope that it will bring positive effect sa akong chess," said Dimakiling who arrived yesterday in Cagayan de Oro from his grandma's hometown of Bohol.

Along with youthful friends from CDO--Lennon Hart Salgados, 13 and Antonio Chavez Jr., 16, the three of them will proceed immediately to Iligan before this morning's opening round matches.

"Silang Richard (IM Bitoon) sa Cebu midiretso na sa Iligan. Wesley So would like to play but circumstances prevented him from joining the field," added Dimakiling referring to the 13-year-old Grandmaster Candidate from Bacoor, Cavite.

Johnnel Balquin, CDO's top act in the 64-square-board game, is among the darkhorse bets in the Iligan Open which has a guaranteed P75,000 top purse going to the champion.

"Apiki sa kuwarta pero preparado kaayo akong tira karon. Kahit sino," Balquin told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro. (LLS)

Guys, are you aware of this so called ATM (Automatic Tubig Machine)? I found one along Aguinaldo St., just in front of PLDT-Maratel. It's a vending machine for mineral water. NBC leaders Spring Oil, Iligan cagers down rivals
04/03/2007

MANILA, Philippines -- Last year’s runner-up Tagaytay-Spring Cooking Oil nipped slumping Quezon-Villa Anita, 80-77, Sunday to assume solo leadership in the 2007 NBC National Cup basketball tournament at the Tolentino Sports Center in Tagaytay City.

The Cooking Oil Masters of NBC president Nathaniel “Tac” Padilla and league EVP Mayor Bambol Tolentino leaned on Nani Epondulan and Jeff Tajonera to post their third straight victory.

The Firefly-Iligan Crusaders scored a masterful 96-72 win over the visiting Montaña Pawnshop-Davao Jewelers to tie idle Valencia Golden Harvest for second place.

The Crusaders of Mayor Lawrence Cruz broke away in the payoff period en route to their second victory in the tournament, initial offering of the country’s premier regional basketball league.

Valencia tries to catch Tagaytay-Spring when it plays host to Pagadian at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The Crusaders, also supported by Sen. Ralph Recto, outgunned the Jewelers 52-39 in the final half to turn the tight contest into a rout.

The scores:

First Game
SPRING 80 -- Epondulan 19, Regalado 12, Mallari 11, Legaspi 7, Marquez 5, Salud 4, Bolocon 3, Reyes 3, Cuenca 0, Muñoz 0.

Quarters: 23-19, 43-41, 59-59, 80-77

Second Game:

Red Bull Cyrus Baguio is Accel best player of the week
04/03/2007

Standing out in a team system that doesn’t favor individual excellence is no easy task.

Yet Cyrus Baguio managed to do what was deemed improbable, giving Red Bull import James Penny the most consistent back-up job to earn the nod as the PBA Press Corps’ ACCEL-Talk ‘N Text Player of the Week for the period March 26 to April 1.

In said week, the former Slam Dunk King averaged 14 points, five rebounds, six assists and a steal, helping the Bulls notch two wins and vault into the top of the season-ending conference with a 6-1 win-loss record.

Red Bull coach Yeng Guiao said the reed-thin levitator from University of Santo Tomas has proved himself worthy of the citation handed out by the scribes covering the league.

“Overdue na ‘yan,” Guiao yesterday said. “Mahirap sa sistema namin ang maging kapansin-pansin dahil even halos ang exposure ng lahat. To distinguish himself in the Red Bull system means he is truly deserving of the award.”

Guiao, seeking reelection as vice governor of Pampanga, is making sure he doesn’t violate any Commission on Elections ruling regarding his coaching chores and has handed over the team reins to long-time assistant Gee Abanilla.

But even Abanilla marvels at the strides the 26-year-old Iligan City native has made in his fourth season in the league.

“Cyrus has really matured as a player. He’s been working very hard to improve his skills and his attitude, knowledge and passion for the game is worth mentioning,” Abanilla said.

“I think he’s really worthy to be Player of the Week.”

Baguio has the numbers to back up the glowing comments from his coaches.

Coming off the bench, he had 16 points, seven rebounds and eight assists in a 102-90 win over Coca-Cola last Sunday.

Prior to that, he started and notched 12 points, three rebounds, four assists and two steals last Wednesday, his points capped by a crucial lay-up that insured the Bulls’ 116-111 win over Air21.

With Penny churning out his usual double-doubles and the likes of Baguio, Larry Fonacier, Junthy Valenzuela, Enrico Villanueva and Celino Cruz giving their opponents additional causes for concern, things can only point upward for Red Bull’s campaign.

Local sea travel slows on ro-ro, high fare
by Darwin G. Amojelar Reporter

The number of passengers traveling by sea dropped last year owing to higher fare and the preference of travelers to use budget airlines and roll-on roll-off (ro-ro) vessels, the Philippine Ports Authority reported.

The PPA report showed that passenger volume fell 14.34 percent to 41.67 million last year from 48.65 million in 2005.

The port authority attributed the decline to higher fare, which drove travelers to prefer less expensive modes of transportation or make use of the nautical highway.

Cargo throughput also posted a 1.39-percent decline to 153.084 million metric tons from 155.23 million MT in 2005. Of the total, domestic cargo stood at 72.22 million MT, while foreign cargo, 80.86 million MT.

“This slowdown can be attributed to the implementation of memorandum circular 02-2006, or the RORO Transport System [RRTS] policy, which provided shippers with a viable option to transport cargoes through the RRTS route,” the agency said.

The PPA said among the ports greatly affected are in South Harbor, Limay, Batangas, Calapan, Legazpi, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Ormoc, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, Iligan, Ozamiz and Zamboanga.

Container traffic, on the other hand, was up by 1.75 percent to 3.77 million twenty-footer equivalent units (TEUs) from 3.71 million TEUs in 2005.

The port authority said the improvement was due to the active movement in foreign goods mostly at the ports of South Harbor, Limay and Davao.

Foreign container traffic increased by 4.71 percent to 2.1 million in 2006 from 2.01 million in 2005, while domestic TEUs dropped by 1.76 percent.

Philippine Leader Calls For Investments In Technology And Youth

April 3, 2007 8:54 a.m. EST

Komfie Manalo - All Headline News Correspondent

Manila, Philippines (AHN) - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo on Tuesday accepted the call made by seven top universities in the country to "develop capability in generating knowledge in science and technology."

Arroyo told representatives of the seven different schools, "This is an important project for us. I am excited to have this project (implemented)." Arroyo was also shown a presentation of the "Program for Engineering Research and Development for Philippine Global Development and Competitiveness" prepared by the schools.

The seven universities are the University of the Philippines-Diliman, De La Salle University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Central Luzon State University, Mindanao State University, University of San Carlos, and Iligan University.

Dr. Reynaldo Vea, president of the Mapua Institute of Technology, said the proposal was all about the "build up research and development capabilities of engineering in the next 10 years."

"We have proposed the setting up of engineering research and development consortium among the seven universities," Dr. Vea said, adding that "this is the most important thing that has to be done now so we could catch up with the world globally."

Vea said the President has "indicated some ways of realizing the program of expenses that involves P800 million a year over the next 10 years."

Among the key thrusts in science and technology contained in the Medium Term Philippine Development Plan are to: make S&T policies supportive of national development goals and policies; enhance competitiveness of the human capability; speed up knowledge creation and dissemination for greater productivity and jobs creation especially in rural areas; and, improve mechanisms and programs to promote and encourage technology-based entrepreneurship.

Dr. Rowena Guevarra, Dean of the UP Diliman College of Engineering, made the power point presentation at Malacanang's Study Room.

Take Billy
By Billy Balbastro

Although 17 year old Nikki Bacolod entered the scene via the Search for the Star in a Million 3 wherein she was runner-up to winner Jerome Sala, chances us she’ll make a name as a movie star someday. She’s tall and movie star-pretty.

She’s recording her debut, Nikki: In Full Bloom. She had been in Australia recently for some shows with the champions (Sarah Geronimo and Rachelle Ann Go).

But at least she’s now in the movies, taking a bow as movie star wannabe in Ang Cute ng Ina Mo. A good start.

Incidentally, Nikki Bacolod is not a screen name. It’s her real name but she doesn’t hail from Bacolod but from Iligan City.

Dimakiling tops Rapid side event

INTERNATIONAL Master Oliver Dimakiling lived up to his billing as one of the country's finest in chess matches with limited time control.

The 25-year-old Dimakiling on Sunday scored 6 points in seven rounds to top the rapid side event of the ongoing 2007 Iligan Open.

Dimakiling actually tied with fellow IM from Cebu, Barlo Nadera but the Dabawenyo prevailed in the Bucholz tiebreak to cop the Rapid title. The two, however, got an equal purse of P9,000 each.

"Sayang kay pildehonon nako siya sa first round naka-ikyas pa," Cagayan de Oro's Jaime Frias said of the veteran Nadera.

Gingoog pride Allan Cantonjos shared third to 6th places at 5.5 points with Misor trainer Johnnel Balquin, Cebu's Anthony Makinano and Davao's Harrison Maamo. They received P4,000 each.

Occupying seventh to 9th places were IM Richard Bitoon of Cebu, Bength Largo of Iligan and NM Ernesto Fernandez of Pagadian. They're bunched at 5 points to secure P1,000, respectively. Landing at 10th and 11th spots with 4.5 points each and P500 taking are IM Emmanuel Senador and the little-known Rodney Opada.

The Iligan-NCFP Open chess championship is sponsored by the City Government of Iligan through mayor Lawrence Cruz and NCFP president Prospero "Butch" Pichay.

Tournament director Willy Abalos is being assisted by NM Cesar Caturla and NA Lorenzo "Jun" Cuizon.

Council gets 2nd place award from DILG
By Ulysses E. Israel

THE City Council of Zamboanga City landed second place in the recently concluded 2006 Local Legislative Award of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

It bested other contenders in the Highly Urbanized City (HUC) category nationwide.

The Local Legislative Award is an annual award being initiated by the DILG in coordination with the Philippine Councilors' League (PCL) that bestows honors on legislative bodies based on their accomplishments during the period of one year.

In the regional level, the City Council-Zamboanga City ranked first in the HUC category.

Vice Mayor Beng Climaco acknowledged the contribution of the city councilors who steadfastly made the city legislative body's achievements worthy and deserving of the award.

"We offer the award to the people of Zamboanga as they have served as our inspiration in every legislative initiative, we, lawmakers put forward," she said.

She said: "It is indeed a great honor for Zamboanga City to be chosen as the Second Best local legislative body besting other outstanding legislative bodies throughout the country."

Climaco led the City Council in bringing honor to the city by passing 109 ordinances and over 2,000 resolutions since the start of its term on July 1, 2004.

She said these ordinances and legislative measures were based on carefully researched initiatives originating from genuine concern to uplift the well-being of the people of Zamboanga and addressing as well as the needs of various sectors.

Among the important legislations crafted by the City Council were the Zoning Law, the Children's Welfare Code, the law creating the multi-sectoral AIDS Council, the ordinance establishing public cemeteries in the different districts of Zamboanga, the Executive Budget for 2005, 2006 and 2007, the City government Plantilla Ordinance and many others.

"We will continue with our work despite of our campaign and this award gives honor and pride to the city. We thank the DILG and the PCL for recognizing our efforts. It is however the people who are the best judge of our work," she said.

Councilor Rudy Lim received the award during the awarding ceremony held in Cebu City.

Cebu City got the First Place while Zamboanga city placed second. Other awardees were: Naga, third place; Baguio, fourth; General Santos, sixth; Mandaluyong, seventh; Lucena, eight; Dagupan, ninth; Davao, tenth; Butuan, eleventh; and Iligan, twelfth.

Tipanoy area would be a good site for a mall if SM wants a 10 hectare lot. I think businessmen are still on a wait-and-see attitude before investing. If Gaisano Mall clicks...they will pour in money.

yes thats true...SM seems to put more emphasis on the real economic prospects of a place jst like in bacolod where robinsons and gaisano first built their malls and they followed suit...and thats what happened in cdo too...gaisano mall and limketkai...and they followed suit...lets observe in the next five years if indeed plaza fair will invest here...

mga students at officials mismo ang ayaw eh, maging isang university ang iit at maseparate siya sa msu system, dba?! kaya wag kang magsabi ng ganyan sa mga politiko, coz there trying there best to make iit a university.. pero unsa may buhaton sa mga students at school officials magrally bda...

dont get mad okay!! PEACE OUT

of course coz the students are always said that the tuition fees are gonna go higher bcoz of the 'privatization' though its not really privatization but to separate it from MSU as another state university...but i think MSU-IIT should grow up to be on itself rather than with MSU coz IIT hasnt grown up as a UNIVERSITY on its own...jst look at the facilities...and also the courses offered...there are many courses that are not there yet coz the main campus is controlling it...they always put extention courses on the campus...maybe they say its on the budget but thats the main coz why MSU-IIT is not growing...it needs a steady and a big chunk of budget to be able to grow bigger...

and on my own point of view...most staff there are muslims and they dont want their items to be scathed away...coz if IIT will be separated, they too are gone...as in erased from the picture...

I am not an alumnus of IIT but I have friends and relatives who are alumni of the school and they are all pretty amazing people with very high iq.

Here's the story. Every time they get together, they can't help not to discuss their alma mater school and how it has moulded their lives. Often times, IIT is compared to UPD/UPLB. Though they pretty much aware that it still has a long way to go to become one, they see the potential that such a magnanimous dream can be achieved someday. And given the right person to run the school, its success rate would even improved at a much faster rate. My friends and relatives are all bullish about IIT's future and that's matters a lot. But at the moment, everything remains a wishful thinking.

Now, if I were to ask you, what must IIT do to improve its status and become super competitive in the national and SEAsian level?

i think what should be done to IIT is that it should be given its own autonomous management outside of the MSU. Perhaps IIT should be given its own budget that can really cater to its growth and potential. In my own opinion, IIT is being overshadowed by the main campus in terms of budget, course offering, and other resources.

I appreciate the input. Thanks tonzi.

But for sure, MSU main would fight tooth and nail to control IIT's budget, that's very likely to happen. Now, what should IIT do if the autonomous it's asking is not handed down? In such case, IIT has to think of ways to break free from this bondage. It has to have other financial means to boost up its resources so it can continue to carry out its programs with or without the grip from the main campus.

Do you think raising the tuition would be a viable means? If it is, how much should be the ideal tuition fee for an IIT education?

That would be the viable means of being able to carry out new and sustaining its existing programs. The main fact that IIT is not able to give new facilities to the academe is reason enough for it to increase its tuition fees. This should be put into the minds of the students. We can never see free education in the country but the increase would not be that big coz the students of IIT are presently being charged for jst once in a semester unlike in private schools. If they want low tuition then IIT would be jst as it is and cant grow. And if thats the case then, they should be supporting Badelles' House Bill. We will see in the future if Badelles' daugther will win this coming May 07 elections.

^ Pila bai ang dapat nga tuition sa IIT? consider the price of IIT's academic quality and the prestige of the school in your pricing. Like my friends who went there agree, a tuition increase would help the school a lot so it can further beat the hell out of its peers' asses. A gradual increase would not cause a revolt, so let's try this scheme. But how much should the increase be and how long should the increase be spread out to make it acceptable to the students.

Pila diay ang current tuition sa IIT? 2k per sem? That's pretty cheap.

Hope they've or they'll take care of the enormous storage space (or compression technology) this baby will require. Just think - one full-length movie (1.5 to 2 hr long) with a respectable video quality will require about 800 to 1,000 Mb. How many "movies" will all 48 cameras generate in a day?
Anyway, Alingatong, et. al., we'd appreciate if you can take a pic of 1 of these "eyes" already installed. Some of these cameras are meant to be seen (overt), while the others are hidden (covert). One overt location is the Quezon ave - Highway intersection, or the original "traffic light". This one monitors traffic flow as well. So you can expect this cam to be recording 24x7.

Bakekang, who are these friends of yours "who went there"? Did they graduate from IIT? I don't think the price of tuition is a reliable gauge of any school's prestige. That would not account for state colleges all over the world where entire degree courses are offered free to qualified students and yet produce quality graduates. Consider the PMA which (in its glory days) produced many of our country's unsung heroes and leaders, but has always been, and still is FREE. Nor does a school's huge income guarantee that it'll become the best (beating the hell out of its peers' asses - as you fondly say). That would not explain how the country's very expensive colleges CANNOT consistently produce board / bar topnotchers.
P2K per sem is not cheap, unless one is living at the high end of society, whose wallet and stomach are always full.
You're probably still in your youth, shielded from the harsh realities of life, to be able to say such senseless things.
You'll know what I mean once YOU'RE the parent supporting YOUR own children in college, earning the average Philippine income for an average-sized family.:ohno:
And hey, it's the parents that are paying, not the students, (except for the very industrious, self-supporting working students). So please ask the parents, not the students, if they'll jump with joy at any increased expenses for the family.

IMHO price of tuition is not necessarily the reliable gauge of any school's prestige. However, raising the tuition gradually would be a viable means to improve IITs facility (unless there are other financial means to boost up its resources so it can continue to carry out its programs). Sad to say quality education has become too expensive nowadays.

I concur with @langyaw. 2K per sem is not cheap to parents who dont have stable jobs. Believe me I have a neighbor who has a daughter studying there. Problema talaga kung saan kukuha ng pera para sa tuition ng kanilang anak. Most of their budget goes to food.

Hi there. A few of my cousins in my mother side have actually graduated from IIT, and they're very proud to have graduated from there. Don't worry; they have never failed to live up to IIT's very good reputation. One of my cousins was top 3 in Chemistry board exam and he just finished MBA at the UC Berkeley - Haas School of Business. He's now connected with Bain & Co. in New York.

BTW, I just turned 22 a few days ago. Does that look still young to you? :) Maybe, but I sure know what I am saying when i open my mouth. And if I don't, I would rather ask just like what I am doing now in this thread.

Now, let's jump off to the topic.
You have a long message but you did not actually propose a solution that would make IIT more competitive. I understand you don't like a TFI so suggest a solution.

As a head start, there is really a correlation between prestige and high price, but I don't want to waste the bandwidth just to explain that.

And your PMA example is actually irrelevant. PMA grads are mandated by the government to work for the military after graduation. In other words, they are required to pay back the government without exemption. I believe IIT grads are left for their own to decide where they want to work when they're done studying.

And hey, it's the parents that are paying, not the students, (except for the very industrious, self-supporting working students). So please ask the parents, not the students, if they'll jump with joy at any increased expenses for the family
Some of those parents have the money for their personal vices but so stingy when it comes to the educational expenses of their children. That actually bothers me. Is 2k per sem for tuition still expensive for you? How much is affordable to you?

happy easter to everyone.

It's sad to hear like that kind of story, gors. it really is. but then that's what life is -- if you know what i mean.

BTW, have you heard about the "ladderized" program of TESDA, gors? maybe those financially hard ups should try to explore this program, and maybe they can see something that's rightly fit for their needs and set ups. IIT is not for everyone and so should these people know that it's not for everybody. TESDA maybe the perfect program for them at the moment when they're not yet financially equipped to study in IIT. Just my two cents worth.

I've read in the previous pages about SM's plan in putting up one here in Iligan, particularly in Tambo area. I went on a 1-week vacation there in Iligan. Was so happy to be home after a year and 6 months of not able to come back home in Iligan. Naa ra man unta sa ko sa Cebu na-base. Well, going back about the SM thing, I've heard from my cousins na SM as well as the Ayala group had initial talks already with the owners of the lot in Tambo area (the area with the kangkongan), who happens to be my first-degree cousins' kins (but aren't mine). Cousins nako sila sa motherside and ang mga tag-iya sa yuta sa Tambo kay ang clan sa ako cousins sa fatherside naman. I am hoping too that plans by SM or Ayala, kung kinsa man gani maka close sa deal, can have the lot be developed into a business area. Ang uso man gud pod these days kay mall with office buildings around it.... Just as how robinsons has done for dumaguete, robinsons there is still u/c pero naa nay existing office building in the same compound, currently occupied by a call center, which is Teletech... I know that 'coz i dropped by dumaguete before I went home to Iligan... I think it's kinda sad to know if Dumaguete's development will surpass that of ours. Kumpleto na baya sila, naay Mcdo (just opened recently), Jollibee, Chowking, Shakey's, Pizzahut, etc. basta sa foodchain category lamang na ang dumaguete.....

Still optimistic for Iligan's speedy development....

Sure. I am very interested and excited about this project. I promise, i'll take some pics once those cameras are in place. :)

thats good to hear that they are currently holding talks with the lot owner which are ur cousins...coz i was thinking that a second branch of SM in CDO is not yet plausible given the fact that DAVAO city only has one SM and also CEBU (though SM CEBU is biggest in the visayas and mindanao with 160,000 sq.mtr gross leasable space)... coz i really think the the SY's are referring to ILIGAN CITY which is near CDO as their next project point for their malling business.

yes, dumaguete is already expanding in terms of commercialization but i think that city is the major city there in NEGROS ORIENTAL coz Bacolod is the major city in NEGROS OCCIDENTAL...i hope in the future ILIGAN CITY will be able to regain its former economic prowess and also improve in terms of shopping and malling ventures...

PRE, when did they first have talks and did it end with a positive note?

^ Pila bai ang dapat nga tuition sa IIT? consider the price of IIT's academic quality and the prestige of the school in your pricing. Like my friends who went there agree, a tuition increase would help the school a lot so it can further beat the hell out of its peers' asses. A gradual increase would not cause a revolt, so let's try this scheme. But how much should the increase be and how long should the increase be spread out to make it acceptable to the students.

Pila diay ang current tuition sa IIT? 2k per sem? That's pretty cheap.

about that amount 1k to 2k per semester... if u have better grades 1.75 -below as GPA/average then u have a scholarship and ur going to have a stipend which is varying in amounts depending on ur course and year and GPA...

Iligan seeks 3rd NBC win

ILIGAN CITY: The Firefly/Iligan Crusaders stake their unbeaten record against the Toyota-Iloilo Warriors Monday as action resumes in the 2007 NBC National Cup basketball tournament at the MSU-IIT gym here.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz’s Crusaders, who are also supported by Sen. Ralph Recto, are slightly favored in the 6:30 p.m. posy-Holy Week contest.

The Crusaders are eyeing their third straight win and a share of the early lead with idle Tagaytay Spring Cooking Oil, last year’s runner-up. They crushed the Montaña Pawnshop-Davao Jewelers, 86-72, just before NBC’s Holy Week break.

Iligan will rely on the Ferdie Go, Bong Marata and Fil-Am guard Rich Hardin in their bid to catch Tagaytay Spring on top of the tourney supported by Sulpicio Lines, Yahoo Philippines, Spring Cooking Oil ,San Miguel Beer, Caltex, Sun Cellular, Firefly Lights, Trans Asia Shipping Lines, Molten, Nature’s Spring, Basketball TV and Viva Prime Channel.

Some of those parents have the money for their personal vices but so stingy when it comes to the educational expenses of their children. That actually bothers me. Is 2k per sem for tuition still expensive for you? How much is affordable to you?

happy easter to everyone.

And so that proves exactly my point, bakekang. You've not answered by points at all. They (your relatives who graduated from IIT) succeeded without the ladderized tuition fee increases you're suggesting. And besides, inflation during those times was not as bad as it is today. But then again, you wouldn't be able to feel that, would you?
For your education, national government subsidizes all State Universities & Colleges (SUCs), and when budgetary deficits become imminent during the year, financial measures are taken by the SUC managers themselves. When such situations prevail or become the norm (the deficits), then budgets are adjusted for the next school year.

At 22, you still smell of milk, need more rice to consume, and several shoes to wear out before you feel how hard the ground really is. My second son, who graduated from an engineering course in IIT last March 2007 with a Leadership Award, is older than you.

Proposing a solution to prove my point can be done even by kids like you, and for me to do that here won't change a thing. Remember this - when you want to change the system, you have to be IN THE SYSTEM.

You talked about "prestige and price". Who talked about this? I've always emphasized QUALITY education having nothing to do with how high a tuition is. It's crazy that some people think that buying the same pair of Levis pants from an expensive store in Makati, which is priced twice from what they'd cost in a regular Levis outlet in Iligan, is more prestigious. Who is going to ask you WHERE and HOW MUCH your pants cost? All that matters is the Levis tag, don't you think? And more importantly, who's wearing them. In the same vein, After one graduates from college, we don't wear our diplomas around our neck. Neither do we wear our CVs like a badge. What'll be seen and experienced by other people is the personality. And so kid, when you get lectured like this, especially from someone who's as old as YOUR father, you better listen because I speak from experience, but you talk out of your imagination.

What has PMA grads serving after graduation have to do with our discussion? I was speaking about the graduates' QUALITY from an institution which offered free college, and not where they go after college.

And bakekang, parents ALWAYS want to give the best to their children. If the economic situation in the Philippines was such that they could send all their kids to La Salle or Ateneo, they would do so. Parents who burn money without remorse on vices but grumble when it comes to educational expenses are losers. But then again, what has this got to do with our discussion? We're talking about the hard-working, average Filipino parent who has all expenses budgeted every month down to the nitty-gritty, and who feels the pinch when any of those expense items increase. I speak for those parents, not for myself, bakekang, so you don't have to insult me. When spoiled rich brats open their mouths, they only reveal their upbringing, and insensitivity to the real condition of most of the Filipino people today. Go back home, talk to the average Filipino parent who has a child in college, who can hardly buy all the books required by his son or daughter, or pay the rent, and whose kids wear the same set of clothes the entire semester. Maybe that'll make you weep, feel their pain and make you think more clearly. 'nuff said. HTH.

I'm fully cognizant of the realities of economics in business as well as in the family, and therefore would like to make it clear that I am NOT AGAINST TFI for any school or institution, so long as they are justified, realistic and therefore AFFORDABLE by parents or students.
But TFI, whether gradual or sudden, for the sake of making the school or institution appear "prestigious" is, for me, unreasonable and downright immoral.
Hope that clarifies my stand on this whole thread on the matter.:ancient:

i think TFI is very against parents who take care of their children's education and also the students who dont have the money to pay for a higher tuition fees...and i also support that idea...we we're jst talking about how to repackage the IIT education system outside of the MSU SYSTEM... someone answered that MSU MAIN would fight tooth and nail to keep IIT in its backyard and the budget that it holds for IIT...so we talked about how to upgrade the facilities without even touching the parting the MSU thing, so we come up with the tuition fee increase...i think the tuition fee in IIT isnt that big compared even to the lowest quality college institution here in iligan...im jst so worried to have known that our IIT hasnt a speech lab to boast about and other low quality colleges have them...WE JST HAVE TO THINK ABOUT NEW MEANS OF MAKING IIT A BETTER EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTION with BETTER FACILITIES that can make it at par with the BEST IN THE COUNTRY...with it, the institute will have new courses to offer to the students in the near future...

Educational institutions occasionally invest capital to meet emerging needs that may or may not directly impact the quality of education (QOE). When, for example, IIT invests in computer hardware and software to enable students to enroll, check their grades via the Internet, in short to make their lives easier, these are highly justifiable capital investments which the management (and even parents and students) will surely approve of. But such expenses NEED NOT be passed on to students, as they do not directly impact quality of education. When the school invests on facilities, such a speech clinic, or buy equipment to improve the laboratory, although these impact directly QOE, although these are transferable costs, they can be recovered one-time and thus, again, need not be passed on to students, but can be covered by the school's annual budget. Even salaries of teachers (remember most of them are also parents), and other RECURRING expenses that have increased due to inflation, although directly related to QOE, may or may not be borne by students. Such decisions, however, are usually arrived at by consensus, considering the financial situation of the SUC and the paying capacity of students. If majority of the families of students belong to the lower half of the economic strata, it is best NOT to raise the tuition, but allow the institution to absorb the incremental operating expenses.
The short answer, is that, yes, the school can invest to improve the student's quality of education, but for a socially-responsible educational institution, IT DOES NOT NECESSARILY MEAN A TFI MUST BE IMPOSED.
Surely this world can use the ideas of bright kids to work around this TFI thingy. :)

Yeah true... the last paragraph is right. If used properly TFI can bring a lot of good things to the school. Even in the UK TFI is also one of the most heated discussions because even though we are paying very expensive tuition to the school it is not enough to provide the running costs for the staff and the amount of research and development going on. Uni's here merely survive on government grants(which is not enough) and on winning research support (i.e. money) from companies. So I think we have to first investigate as to how the school runs, restructure it if needed and see where TFI comes in

Normin school-kids avail of food drive

AROUND 15,875 school children in Northern Mindanao availed of the Food-for-School Program (FSP) of the Department of Education (DepEd) amounting to P1.29 million, during school year 2006-2007.

"These children beneficiaries actually come from 319 schools of the region's four provinces that are recipients of the FSP-Bigas Para sa Mag-aaral at Pamilya, namely, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental," Regional Director Estrella Abid-Babano of DepEd-Northern Mindanao said.

Under the FSP, rice and basic food items are given daily to school children that will be modified to a weekly trek to the nearest churches or church organizations that will distribute a week's supply thereby feeding not only the children but their families as well.

The FSP implementation in the region began in September, last year, with each child beneficiary given one kilogram of rice per day for 90 feeding days, Babano said.

She also said the province of Lanao del Norte registered the most number of 9,870 FSP beneficiaries from 164 schools of the following towns: Bacolod, Kauswagan, Linamon, Maigo, Matungao, Poona Piagapo, Munai; Pantao Ragat, Pantar, Salvador, Sultan Naga Dimaporo, Sapad-Nuungan and Tangkal.

This was followed by Misamis Occidental with 2,830 beneficiaries from 105 schools coming from Baliangao, Calamba, Don Victoriano, Panaon, Sapang Dalaga and Sinacaban.

Next was Camiguin with 2,283 beneficiaries from 36 schools of Catarman, Mahinog, Sagay and Guinsiliban and Bukidnon, 892 beneficiaries from 14 schools, all from Dangcagan town.

Meanwhile, in order to sustain the government's efforts to mitigate hunger among children and their families and upon instruction of Pres. Arroyo during the recent National Nutrition Council Cabinet Level Meeting, the FSP is extended for another 40 feeding days, this summer, in consonance to DepEd Memorandum No. 142, Series of 2007.

Dr. Ella Cecilla G. Naliponguit, DepEd-10 Medical Officer, said the target beneficiaries are the same as those covered in the same recipient schools during the SY 2006-2007.

"This time, however, it will have added feature of feeding each child with 180-200 ml. fresh/sterilized or powdered full cream milk and fortified instant noodles inside the classroom," she said.

In some areas, milk will be delivered by the National Dairy Authority (NDA) but in most FSP areas, powdered milk will be made available upon completion of procurement process and production of the milk packs.

Similarly, the rice, milk and noodles shall be given only to Grade I pupils in the identified FSP schools.

Pre-schoolers in DepEd-supervised schools included in the SY 2006-2007 FSP Implementation, however, shall not be given 1 kg. of iron fortified rice but will be fed in schools using the menu prepared by the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and food preparation to be undertaken by parent volunteers, Naliponguit added.

N. Mindanao 2006 tax revenues at P407-M

ALL revenue regions (RR) and revenue district offices (RDO) nationwide have been directed to check on establishments found issuing fake receipts and not paying correct taxes by Commissioner Jose Mario Bunag of the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR).

Bunag's directive came after the BIR, based on verification of winners in the Premyo Sa Resibo Raffle Promo (PSRRP) launched June last year, revealed that half of the 140,000 business establishments who submitted official receipts as entries had no record of income tax payments.

"Generating some 7.8 million texted receipts as entries, the PSRRP was part of the government's efforts to collect billions in unpaid taxes which is gaining ground with the discovery of business establishments with fraudulent tax records," Bunag said.

Meanwhile, a total revenue of Php4.017 billion have been collected in Northern Mindanao by BIR, region 16, last year, posting an excess of P407.23 million or 11.3 percent over its collection of P3.610 billion in 2005.

Data gathered by the National Economic and Development Authority (Neda) show that collection of the Value Added Tax (VAT) in 2006 posted the highest increase in collections, from P667.188 million to P1.054 billion or 58 percent.

This was followed by "Other" Taxes, from P232.743 million to P253.136 million or 8.8 percent and Income Taxes, from P2.534 billion to P2.536 billion or 0.1 percent.

Percentage taxes, however, went down, from P175.8 million to P172.813 million or a negative 1.7 percent. Excise taxes amounted to P478.538 million but there is no data to compare it with in 2005.

The Neda data also show that the 2006 fourth quarter collections of the region went up by 32.5 percent with VAT posting the highest increase, from P149.526 million to P411.609 million or 175.3 percent and "Other" Taxes, from P46.914 million to P86.708 million or 84.8 percent.

However, negative performances were observed during the period in Percentages Taxes which went down from P51.379 million to P49.350 million or a negative 3.9 percent and Income Taxes, from P654.343 million to P647.914 million or a negative 1.0 percent.

On the other hand, all RDO's of the region posted positive performances in their collections in 2006, the highest of which was Ozamiz City, from P268.993 million to P318.656 million or 18.5 percent.

This was followed by Iligan City, from P540.948 million to P627.476 million or 16 percent, Malaybalay City, from P428.568 million to P482.163 million or 12.5 percent, Gingoog City, from P139.870 million to P156.644 million or 12 percent and Cagayan de Oro City, P2.231 billion to P2.432 billion or 9 percent.

As the NEDA figures indicate, improved performances were also shown by the NorMin RDO's during the last quarter of 2006, with Cagayan de Oro City posting the highest increase in collection, from P537.8 million to P786.58 million or 46.2 percent,

Next was Iligan Ctiy, from P139.265 million to P163.943 million or 17.7 percent, Ozamiz City, from P75.86 million to P84.249 million or 11.1 percent and Gingoog City, from P37.82 million to P39.798 million or 5.2 percent.

The coverage of BIR-16 include six RDO's, i.e. five from Northern Mindanao, namely: RDO 97, Gingoog City, RDO 98, Cagayan de Oro City, RDO 99, Malaybalay City, RDO 100, Ozamiz City and RDO 101, Iligan City and one from the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (Armm), RDO 102, Marawi City.

The latter have been placed under BIR-16 because of its proximity to Cagayan de Oro City its regional base than in Cotabato City where the Armm regional center is located.

Probably the reason why walang news regarding the construction of another mall in iligan because they're still negotiating with the lot owners and are processing their papers pa. For now wala pa tayo concrete evidence na magtatayo talaga sila in our city. Let's just wait. :)

IMO, the best spot in Timoga is the Dela Mar Resort. Yong resort na nasa likurang bahagi ng Macapagal Ancestral House. I like the place very much. Pwedeng pambata, pangmatanda, pambarkada, pampamilya, etc.

Best beach resort? - for me yong beach line ng Linamon. Pwede kang mag-skim boarding.
