800 million? Great. If we try to compare that to industry standards, SM City Lipa was completed with P700 million

We're seeing all the overt cams getting in place now. It'd be fun counting them and noting their locations in a table. The covert cams should be difficult to spot. Watch out for them, too!

http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/images/news/newspics/07-08-2007/nikki225.jpg On the brink of womanhood

By MARIDOL RAÑOA-BISMARK
The Philippine Star

Nikki Bacolod is on the verge of womanhood. When she turns 18 on Aug. 18, she will bid her candy-colored world of stuffed toys and frilly things good-bye. And Nikki will welcome a whole new world of challenges and opportunities she is both entitled and heir to.

Like all parents though, Nikki’s still see her as their baby. As the youngest in a brood of three, the Viva artist senses her parents’ hesitation to let go. But she’s not complaining. It has never been in her nature to be pasaway, or rebellious, after all.

Sweet Nikki has toed the line since Day One. The most adventurous she has gotten so far was to go rock climbing — no hanging out with shady characters, wasting the night away in vices, etc. Nikki is too clean living for that.

Maybe it’s the athlete in her. Afflicted with asthma since she was that high, Nikki — like her two siblings — learned to swim as a child growing up in far-flung Iligan. Getting into other types of sports, like badminton, volleyball, even sepak takraw was easy from there.

Why, Nikki could easily do a Dyan Castillejo — host a sports-oriented show, that is.

"I must have inherited my parents’ love for sports," muses Nikki. Dad plays soccer and mom, Nikki’s constant companion, is into volleyball.

Their athletic spirit has not only taught Nikki how to value sports, it has also instilled the values of discipline and competitiveness in the singing champion.

This go-getter spirit has driven Nikki to seek a scholarship in the US. She is also excited over the release of her new album in September and her very first teleserye soon: ABS-CBN’s Pangarap na Bituin topbilling Sarah Geronimo.

Nikki has been prepping herself up for her role: That of a naïve provincial lass with a rather dark side hidden from most everybody.

"I’ve been practicing in front of the mirror," the Cherie Gil fan reports.

Nikki is also bracing herself for her grand meeting on the set with other artists she admires: Cherry Pie Picache, Rio Locsin and Jericho Rosales. Nikki is sure she will learn a lot from her seniors in the field. Ah, what a great way to greet adult life!

That’s why Nikki can’t wait to turn 18. She’s had her simple, debut party all planned out. It will be luau style, with lots of flowers to spruce up the big event, to be held at Makati Sports Club. The 120 guests will also be few and very selected, limited to Nikki’s family and close friends.

Her first dance will be with a nonshowbiz guy: Carlos Fernandez, her longtime friend from her swimming competition days. Fellow Viva artist Vince Saldana will be one of the 18 roses.

Low-key Nikki has opted for austerity for her big day. That’s why she plans to wear a simple gown, far from the ostentatious ballroom dresses many of her fellow showbiz debutantes go for.

"It’s heavy and expensive. I’d rather be practical," Nikki reasons out.

This is also why she changed her mind about the theme of her debut.

"At first, I thought of a Spanish masquerade as theme. But I figured it would be expensive for my guests and me," states Nikki.

Besides, what’s far more important is, as the Little Prince said in the famous book, invisible to the eye. Nikki’s wish on her 18th birthday is not for material things. All she wants is "to be happier with God." No other wish can be more meaningful.

Pilmico is Iligan top taxpayer

http://www.geocities.com/lchsspectrum/pilmico7.jpg

The Iligan City Government recognized anew Pilmico Foods Corporation (in photo) as the number one taxpayer of Iligan for the manufacturing category. The award was given during the 57th Adlawan sa Iligan Commemorative Programme last June 16.

In another ceremony, Pilmico was acknowledged for its exemplary performance in corporation social responsibility for 2006. Pilmico has always actively helped uplift the local community through its community relations projects. An Aboitiz flour milling company, Pilmico Foods Corp. has been providing the Filipino people with high quality flour for over 40 years.

Pilmico secures P500-M loan for expansion

Pilmico Foods Corporation (PFC) recently signed a P500 million, 5-year loan with Security Bank Corporation (SBC). Proceeds from the loan will support the company’s feedmill expansion in Iligan.

At the signing were Gabriel T. Manalac, Aboitiz Equity Ventures Treasurer; Jose Antonio Aboitiz, PFC Chief Financial Officer; Antonio Moraza, PFC President/Chief Executive Officer; Alberto Villarosa, SBC President; Patricia Siy, SBC Senior Vice President; and Joyce So, SBC Assistant Vice President.

A new feedmill, which is expected to be operational by the first quarter of 2008, will enable PFC to produce complex animal feeds from a variety of raw materials. The company currently makes simple swine base feeds as a by-product of its core flour milling operations. The feedmill expansion is expected to strengthen PFC's presence in the complex feeds market, currently being served through its subsidiary Fil-Am Foods.

Pilmico Inks Deal with Dutch Engineering Firm

Aboitiz unit Pilmico Foods Corporation signs on Dutch firm Ottevanger Milling Engineers B.V. for the supply, installation and commissioning of equipment for the new feedmill that will be built in Iligan this year.

Pilmico CEO Antonio Moraza (in picture, left) led the contract signing held yesterday at the Aboitiz offices in Makati City. Director Erik Ottevanger (in picture, right) represented Ottevanger Milling Engineers B.V.

Pilmico is currently manufacturing simple swine base feeds as a by-product of its core flour milling operations. The construction of this new feedmill will enable Pilmico to create complex animal feeds made from a variety of raw materials. This expansion is expected to strengthen Pilmico's presence in the complex feeds market which it is currently serving through its feeds subsidiary, Fil-Am Foods. The Iligan feedmill should be operational by the first quarter of 2008.

Terror law resolutions okayed

By Joyce Pangco Pañares

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY—President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo assured critics of the controversial Anti-Terror Law that its implementation will not lead to more human rights violations even as she adopted a resolution that would make the media likely targets of the law.

In her closing remarks at the Mindanao Peace and Security Summit held here yesterday, the President said the Human Security Act will not be used to harass the political opposition nor to silence hard-hitting journalists.

“There is a fundamental difference between those who take up arms and those who take the fight to the ballot box. Our government will protect the political rights of any person who wishes to participate in our democracy however we might disagree on philosophy and approach” Mrs. Arroyo said amid criticism that the Anti-Terror Law will be used to muzzle militant political groups.

“We must also protect journalists—the men and women in the media who have put their lives on the line to do their job— from violence just as we must protect all innocent civilians. But we must band together as a people and as public servants to stop the political terrorists who live outside the boundaries of human justice.”

But the resolutions drafted by the five workshop groups here included the media among the targets of the Anti-Terror Law.

Workshop Group 3, which focused on denying support to terrorists and was facilitated by Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz, proposed the expansion of the coverage of the Human Security Act. But Cruz clarified that their proposal is not meant to attack the press but simply to limit the media opportunities given to known terrorists.

“There should be balanced reporting. There should be no live interviews with terrorists which could propagate terroristic objectives,” the local official told Standard Today.

When asked for comment, even Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye appeared lukewarm to the proposal.

“We can easily define what is irresponsible reporting, but that does not automatically constitute supporting terrorists,” Bunye said.

But Mrs. Arroyo decided to adopt the resolution in full and assigned presidential adviser on the peace process Jesus Dureza to spearhead efforts to implement the resolution.

Aside from the proposal to amend the law to cover media reports, other proposals include increasing the budget for the security and development of Mindanao next year to 30 percent from this year’s eight percent; including Arabic and Islamic values in the education curriculum; creation of a tripartite commission of lay and religious leaders; removal of all religious labels on crimes; proportional appointment of Muslims and indigenous people in the National Police; reviewing the system for Islamic schools to prevent extremism; and monitoring groups that might be funding terrorists.

Meanwhile, Justice Secretary Raul Gonzalez asked the Supreme Court to designate special anti-terror courts that will focus on the proscription of suspected terrorist groups.

Gonzalez said he wrote Chief Justice Reynato Puno to formally request the special courts to ensure that the local terror list can be formed immediately.

“I requested the Supreme Court to identify special courts which will handle our proscription cases and also to identify which division of the Court of Appeals will handle these cases,” Gonzalez said in an interview during the Mindanao Peace and Security Summit here in Cagayan de Oro.

Gonzalez is the vice chairman of the Anti-Terrorism Council that will spearhead the implementation of the Human Security Act starting this Sunday.

Under Section 17 of the controversial Human Security Act, the justice department has to apply for the inclusion of any group in the local terror list before a regional trial court.

Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said groups that have been declared as terrorists by the international community are likely to be included in the list.

Iligan beats Tagaytay, 85-82, in NBC play

Firefly-Iligan Crusaders edged Tagaytay Spring Cooking Oil via a come-from-behind win, 85-82, in their recent face-off at the 2007 Spring Cooking Oil-NBC National Cup, ABS-CBN News learned Wednesday.

Tagaytay, which dominated Iligan for most of the game, collapsed during crunch time during their game Sunday at the Gov. Angel Medina, Sr. gym in Iligan.

The Crusaders are now in second place with an 11-4 mark behind Ozamiz (12-4). Tagaytay fell to third place at11-5.

The Scores:

Iligan 85 - Marata 23, Cruz 19. Mangahas 9, Kalaw 6, Matias 5, Cabili 4, Go 4, Saladaga 4, Ayodelle 3, Hardin 1, Gatchalian 0.

Some sections of the law that appear violative of a person's rights need to be re-examined. I heard that a group of lawyers is going to question the constitutionality of some provisions of this law through a petition in the Supreme Court.

Iligan seek semis versus Iloilo
Inquirer

The Iligan Crusaders gun for an outright semifinals berth in the 2007 Spring Cooking Oil-NBC National Cup basketball tournament Friday when they play the Toyota-Iloilo Warriors at the San Agustin gym here.

The Crusaders of Mayor Lawrence Cruz and supporter former Sen. Ralph Recto are favored in the 6:30 p.m. contest.

If they win, they will join idle defending champion Ozamiz in the semifinals.

The Crusaders earned a shot at the second semifinal slot after turning back Tagaytay Spring, 85-82, last Sunday.

Spring posted an 11-5 mark at the end of the eliminations in the tournament.

“We’ll definitely play tonight seeking an outright semis berth,” said Iligan team manager Freddie Siao. “I told the team not to be overconfident, especially now that Iloilo has beefed up its roster.”

The Warriors of businessman Robert Uy and strong supporter Mayor Jerry Trenas will bank on Ruel Balgos, Eugene Tan, Floyd Dedicatoria and Erick Rodriguez.

The Crusaders will be bannered by veteran Bong Marata, Nat Cruz and Harold Sta. Cruz.

There will be more than 40 IP Cameras (70% were already installed) being installed in different street junctions, public places, and vital facilities. All cameras are IP-based and networked using Wireless LAN. Real time monitoring and recording is done 24/7 with the central monitoring room located at city hall.

Maria Cristina Falls

Iligan’s greatest heritage, the landmark of Iligan City. The most resplendent among the 23 waterfalls. Also known as the “Mother of Industry” and “Fountainhead of Progress,” it is 320 feet high and the veritable source of industrial power in the city; 9.3 kilometers away from the city proper.

If the city wants to, they CAN obtain that land by legal means. It's called expropriation. The owner has no choice in this option, but to sell his property at the right and just price.
Tungod sa terrain, lisud pag stretch sa runway, not without a very high cost. Mao ng small and light planes ra ang makagamit ana nga airport.

that lot owner will eventually surrender to the law of imminent domain...for public greater good, the lot will be a property of the city..if the government pursues

the airport will serve as satellite airport once LIA is operational...and will even become a hub for logistics and cargo in lieu of the city's manufacturing industry...

Comelec cancels 3 Lanao Norte COCs
By Lino Dela Cruz
Iligan correspondent

ILIGAN CITY---The Commission on Election (Comelec) 2nd Division has ruled the exclusion of the controversial Certificates of Canvass (COCs) from three Lanao del Norte towns after they were found to have been tampered.

Congressional candidate Vicente Belmonte Jr., through the United Opposition (UNO) lawyers, filed a petition for exclusion of the three controversial ballot boxes.

Respondents are the Special Provincial Board of Canvassers, congressional candidates lawyer Angelique Badelles, and Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Dimaporo.

In its resolution released on July 10, this year, Comelec 2nd Division presiding Commissioner Florentino Tuazon Jr. and Commissioners Rene Sarmiento and Nicodemo Ferrer said "there is already prima facie that these COCs have been tampered."

The Comelec also cited "statistical improbability resulting from the deliberate and reckless alterations" of the votes in the COC copy of the Provincial Board of Canvassers for Kauswagan town where the alleged total votes of 10,225 of congressional candidate Dimaporo, of the Lakas-CMD), in Kauswagan exceeded the total number of voters.

The controversial ballot boxes from the towns of Kauswagan, Bacolod and Maigo, Lanao del Norte were declared by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) to have been forcibly opened by destroying the padlocks. The COCs inside were tampered.

The ballot boxes were brought to the Comelec en banc by the Special Provincial Board of Canvassers (SPBOC) after Vicente Belmonte Jr., United Opposition (UNO) congressional candidate for the 1st District of Lanao del Norte, and UNO lawyers petitioned for the correction of manifest errors and the exclusion from canvassing the COCs from the 3 towns.

Limited

On the other hand, Lakas-CMD lawyers asked the Comelec to dismiss Belmonte's petition and to proclaim Dimaporo as winner.

They cited that the Comelec has no jurisdiction over the petition and that pre-proclamation cases are limited to elections for regional, provincial, city, and municipal officials.

However, the Comelec said in its resolution that "in certain instances, the Comelec may entertain petitions when the sole intent of such pleadings is for the correction of clear and manifest errors."

The Comelec said it, "by constitutional mandate, must do everything in its power to secure a fair and honest ascertainment of the results of an election."

The Comelec granted Belmonte's petition and directed "the Board of Canvassers to reconvene in Manila (for security purposes) and issue a new COC, excluding the election returns subject to this appeal, and substituting the proper entries as are evident in the authentic copies of COCs and from the authentic copies of the election returns related to the subject COCs.

In the authenticated copies of the COCs from the National Movement for Free Elections-Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting (Namfrel-PPCRV) the total number of votes showed Belmonte (UNO) with 59,932 votes, Angelique Badelles (Kampi) with 46,600 votes, and Imelda Dimaporo (Lakas-CMD) with 43,403 votes.

Donate blood, PNRC Iligan urges public

The month of July has been declared as Blood Donor’s Month per Presidential Proclamation No. 1021 issued on June 9, 1997.

On the occasion, all residents of the Philippines are called upon to turn their thoughts to and be inspired to emulate the men and women in our country who freely and voluntarily give part of themselves to help those in need of blood and its components.

In line with the celebration, the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC)-Iligan City Local Chapter conducted a Mass Blood Donation at the city public plaza on July 13, 2007 which started at 8:00 am and ended at 5:00 pm, said Genevieve G. Amodia, PNRC-Iligan chapter administrator.

"We have targeted 80 donors for the bloodletting activity who responded to our call on this lucky day – or so they say, because it is Friday the 13th," said Amodia.

Amodia explained that when you donate blood, your bone marrow is stimulated to produce new blood cells. This will make your blood-forming organs function more effectively. And the new young cells generated will mean more effective and active cells.

This is equivalent to a "change oil" in a car, Amodia further said. In the same way that a car works better after its oil is changed, donating regularly 3 to 4 times a year will make the donor healthy with no ill effects.

Amodia added that prospective blood donors who would submit themselves for blood donation will have free physical checkup and laboratory tests. Donors therefore will know their blood type, hemoglobin level and significant results of screening tests done (HIV, Malaria, Syphillis and Hepatitis B) and whether they are anemic or not.

The donor will be given a blood donor card, which will give them priority in case of blood needs, Amodia further said.

Potential donors are aged 16-17 years old (with parental consent) and 18-65 years old, should have weighted at least 110 lbs or above, with a pulse rate of between 60 to 100 beats per minute with a regular rhythm, having a blood pressure between 90-140 systolic / 70-90 diastolic, and with hemoglobin of at least 125g/l.

The blood donation activity is done in tandem with Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, represented by Lito Cañon, manager of Shell Depot-Iligan. Also with the event are the Iligan City local government unit, the Iligan Life Savers Club and plant industries in the city.

Cañon said that the had been a blood donor for three years, and already encouraged Shell Depot employees to do the little gift-giving act of blood donation. (PIA-10 Iligan)

CTO AIMS FOR P1-B BUDGET IN 2008
City Information Office
July 16, 2007

Acting chief of the City Treasurer’s Office, Ms. Louela Maybituin is hopeful that her office can possibly achieve the aimed one billion-peso budget in year 2008.

According to Ms. Maybituin, CTO now employs strategies or ways and means in order to make such intention realized. These are the business tax mapping by barangay, public auction and putting-up of billboards in public places.

Maybituin clarified that Business Tax Mapping is held in every barangay for purposes of determining new businesses established in every area and identify delinquent taxpayers. She also detailed that the purpose of their installation of billboards is made to remind taxpayers of their obligations as well as the schedule of their payment.

The acting city treasurer added that the said strategies are implemented to also comply with the directive of City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz to generate more funds for various programs and projects of the local administration

MAYOR CRUZ PUSHES C3 PROJECT
City Information Office
July 16, 2007

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz personally appeared at the Department of Public Works and Highways’ Project Management Office-Feasibility Study in Quezon City on July 13.

The local chief executive met Project Director Faustino Sta. Maria and Planning Officer Carmelino J.C. Tizon of the said office relative to the feasibility study of the proposed Circumferential Road 3 or C3 Project in the interior part of Iligan.

Supervising Admin Officer Aurea Suzette Redondo of the City Mayor’s Office disclosed that the Mayor Cruz immediately acted on the advice of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during their recent meeting in Cagayan de Oro to prioritize the project.

Prior to his follow-up with DPWHPMO-FS, Mayor Cruz also endorsed the same to the Regional Development Council thru RDC chair Governor Loreto Ocampos of Misamis Occidental for its inclusion in the list of priority projects, as well as, to attract funding agencies.

C3 is a new highway of Iligan that will cross the interior barangays from Sta. Filomena of the northern side to Mandulog-Pugaan-Merila(Ubaldo Laya)-Tipanoy-Suarez-Ditucalan- then to Buruun of the southern side or Linamon, Linamon, Lanao del Norte.

Mayor Cruz believes that this project will open new economic developments in Iligan aside from just solving traffic problems.

LGU ILIGAN SETS 2010 AS DEADLINE TO SOLVE WATER
City Information Office
July 16, 2007

Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz stated in a very recent radio interview that his administration will strive hard to find solutions to the water supply crisis and the three decade-old garbage problem in Iligan City before his second term ends in 2010.

He said that this was determined by him and the members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod in a meeting he called on July 2, 2007, considering that some components of the projects have already been started during his previous term.

Mayor Cruz disclosed that he will appoint Engr. Benjamin Quitos, Jr., Assistant City Engineer, to work full-time as manager of Iligan City Solid Waste Management Project who will also be backed-up by full-time technical personnel, while the Office of the Iligan City Waterworks Systems Office is also scheduled to implement several portions of the 495.5 Million-Peso Water Supply Improvement Project within the first 100 days.

In a separate occasion, Councilor Chonilo Ruiz who chairs the SP-Environment Committee revealed that, the Iligan City Solid Waste Management Board has set to make the Central Materials Recovery and Composting Facility (CMRCF) operational by August 2008.

Along with these big projects, the local administration shall, likewise, continue giving attention to reforms in health and social services, peace and order, livelihood programs, farm to market roads, agricultural development and others.

Mindanao's LARGEST economy, the island's FASTEST growing and having the HIGHEST GDP per capita (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW071607/content.php)

Cagayan Valley outpaces other regional economies in 2006

Cagayan Valley’s domestic economy grew by 7.2% in 2006, outpacing the other 16 regions in the country, a statement released over the weekend by the National Statistical Coordination Board read.

Cagayan Valley actually rebounded from a contraction of 4.3% in 2005, buoyed by the strong performance of its agriculture, fishery and forestry (AFF) sector, which accounted for more than half of the region’s economy.

The top five fastest-growing economies in 2006 also included the National Capital Region (NCR, as Metro Manila is classified) and Northern Mindanao with 6.8% growth each, Soccsksargen (South Cotabato-Cotabato City-Sultan Kudarat-Sarangani-General Santos City), 6.7% and Ilocos with 6.2%.

On the other hand, Zamboanga Peninsula at the western tip of Mindanao posted the lowest growth at 2.1%.

Out of the 17 regions in the country, 11 registered accelerated growths, with Cagayan Valley posting an 11.5-percentage-point increase, followed by Soccsksargen (4.4 percentage points) and Cordillera (2.8 percentage points).

Five regions posted decelerated growths, with Zamboanga Peninsula experiencing the biggest reduction by 4.8 percentage points.

Western Visayas’ economy maintained its growth of 4.9%.

NCR continued to account for the bulk of the country’s economy with a 32.5% share of the national GDP, followed by Calabarzon (Cavite-Laguna-Batangas-Rizal-Quezon corridor immediately south of Metro Manila) with 12.3% and Central Luzon with 8.4%.

NCR likewise contributed the biggest share of 2.2 percentage points to the total GDP growth of 5.4% in 2006.

This was followed by Calabarzon which contributed 0.6 percentage point and Central Luzon, Western Visayas and Central Visayas with contributions of 0.4 percentage point each.

Among the major island groups, Mindanao — consisting of six regions — collectively grew by 5.2% in 2006, an acceleration from its 4.2% growth in 2005.

But its share to the national economy stood still at 17.7% while its contribution to growth increased from 0.7 percentage point to 0.9 percentage point in 2006.

Luzon’s (excluding NCR) aggregate economic growth increased to 4.5% in 2006 from 2.8.% in 2005. It contributed 33.4% to the national GDP and 1.5 percentage points to GDP growth.

On the other hand, Visayas’ contribution to the economy was maintained at 16.5%. Its aggregate economic growth decreased to 4.9% in 2006 from 5.1% in 2005. Meanwhile, the contribution to overall GDP growth of Visayas remained the same at 0.8 percentage point.

Per capita gross regional domestic product (GRDP) was highest in NCR at P37,855, a 5.3% improvement over its 2005 level of P35,945.

This was followed by the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) in northern Luzon with P18,171 and Northern Mindanao with P15,628.

On the other hand, the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) registered the lowest per capita GRDP at P3,486.

NCR also posted the highest per capita index relative to the national average with 257.9, followed by CAR with 123.8, and Northern Mindanao with 106.5. All other regions posted indexes lower than the national average, with ARMM registering the lowest at 23.8.

The GRDP measures the goods and services produced in each of the geopolitical regions of the country. It provides for an analysis of the regional distribution of the country’s gross domestic product, the industries and factors that contribute to the regional economies, and the pace at which these economies are moving on an annual basis.

^^ Another milestone for us here in Northern Mindanao. We'll just have to work harder to sustain the regions growth year-on-year.

FACTBOX-Five facts on Philippines President Arroyo
16 Jul 2007 03:55:39 GMT
Source: Reuters

July 16 (Reuters) - President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo vowed to secure peace and prosperity for the Philippines in her final three years in office, saying on the weekend that she wanted to resume stalled talks with armed communist rebels.

Here are five facts on the president, who will give an annual State of the Nation Address on July 23 when Congress reopens.

(For related story see PHILIPPINES-ARROYO or [nL14559326])

* Born on April 5, 1947, Arroyo is the daughter of lawyer and late Philippines President Diosdado Macapagal. Her childhood was split between Iligan, on the southern island of Mindanao, where she was looked after by her grandmother, and Manila, where she moved permanently after her father was elected in 1961.

* A top student who graduated valedictorian, she studied international relations in Washington's Georgetown University from 1966-1968, where she was a friend and classmate of future U.S. President Bill Clinton. Arroyo then returned to the Philippines and married lawyer and businessman Jose Miguel Arroyo in 1968, with whom she has three children.

* After earning a doctorate in economics, Arroyo entered politics in 1986 when she was invited to join the government of President Corazon Aquino, the country's first female leader. Arroyo's first post was assistant secretary in the Department of Trade and Industry.

* With her three children grown up, the staunchly Roman Catholic Arroyo decide to run for the Senate. Becoming a senator in 1992, she rose to become the first female vice president in 1998. On Jan. 20, 2001, she was sworn in as the country's 14th president when predecessor Joseph Estrada was ousted on charges of corruption following weeks of street protests. She won a six-year term as president in a 2004 poll that saw her widely accused of vote rigging.

* Arroyo is credited with improving the country's finances, raising taxes in 2006 and trimming the budget deficit. However there have been several calls for her impeachment over alleged fraud in the 2004 election. Critics accuse her administration of human rights abuses and extra-judicial killings of left-wing opponents. And they assert Arroyo's current campaign for constitutional reform is designed to get around provisions that presidents only serve a single term.

@paul: As a pro painter, how do you consider this painting? Don't you really consider it as a formal portrait of PGMA?

@paul: As a pro painter, how do you consider this painting? Don't you really consider it as a formal portrait of PGMA?

bai, i'm not a pro painter if i were to compare myself with others.

on formal - this isn't as i've said. first time i saw it (this thread), it leaves some bitter after taste for a person who occupies the highest position in the land (ok lang for private viewing or in the confines of her bedroom, and not for public consumption). that is my opinion only, you can or anybody have otherwise, hehehe). but again, i have to contradict myself on this as it is in a home.

in a formal sense, a formal painting have a formal pose (sometimes austere) and clothes (gown, colour of clothers are a little on the dark side, closeneck or whatever, probably not much exposure of skin). what you have there is very casual in pose and clothes, so the reason of my comment. most formal paintings are officially commissioned for whatever purpose (be it to be copied, printed and posted in any government institution.
