Sinjin P. August 2nd, 2006, 07:33 AM Congratulations to Iligan! Thread 2: http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=380132 Alingatong August 2nd, 2006, 07:34 AM ^^What we have as of now is not a real big mall. It's a theater converted to a mall called Berds Theater and Mall. Gaisano Mall is still under construction. Iliganons normally go shopping either in CDO or Cebu. Sinjin P. August 2nd, 2006, 07:34 AM http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/1/19/Ph_seal_lanao_del_norte_iligan.png http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/d/d0/Ph_locator_lanao_del_norte_iligan.png Iligan City is a 1st class city in the province of Lanao del Norte, Philippines, of which it was the province's former capital. It is approximately 800 kilometers southeast of Manila. According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 355,061 people in 57,179 households. Iligan City is bounded on the north by the municipality of Lugait, Misamis Oriental, to the south by the municipalities of Baloi and Linamon of Lanao del Norte, to the east by the territories of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon, and to the west by Iligan Bay. Known as the City of Majestic Waterfalls (approximately more than 20 waterfalls), Iligan is also the Industrial Center of the South. It produces hydroelectric power for the Mindanao region through the National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), the site of the Mindanao Regional Center (MRC) housing Agus IV, VI and VII hydroelectric plants. It also houses industries like steel, tinplate, pulp and paper and flourmills. The National Steel Corporation, one of the largest steel manufacturers in the Southeast Asian region, now Global Steelworks International Incorporated was re-opened in 2003 after heavy setbacks resulting to its closure in 1999. Iligan along with its neighboring city, Cagayan de Oro City, are the two major components for the Cagayan-Iligan Corridor, the country's major development growth area in Mindanao. Iligan City is not only rich in natural resources and industries but it is also the home of cultural mixes, Maranaos of Lanao del Sur, Higaonons of Bukidnon, settlers and migrants from other parts of the country. The climate is consistent year around since Iligan is outside the typhoon belt with an average temperature of just 22 degrees Celsius, and average rainfall of 109 mm per month. To the west Iligan Bay provides ferry and container ship transportation. East of the city, flat cultivated coastal land gives way to steep volcanic hills and mountains providing the waterfalls and cold springs for which the area is well known. Hence, the place came to be called as ILIGAN. Alingatong August 3rd, 2006, 07:07 AM Iligan implements TESDA ladderized education program by Glenda @ 9:15 am. Filed under News Cagayan de Oro City (3 August) — Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) Lanao del Norte Provincial Director Edwin Gatinao reported that five schools in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte have already registered for President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s Ladderized Education Program. Gatinao explained the program as an education and training mechanism that allows students’ and workers’ progression between TESDA and higher education and vice versa. Through the ladderized degree program, a student can now earn a full technical-vocational educational training qualification should he choose to exit from college. On the other hand, a student of a technical-vocational course will now also find it easier to take up a college degree. “We are now working with the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and Department of Education (DepEd) for this program, as this will help the students match skills to jobs and enable them to take advantage of the opportunities given by the President,” Gatinao said. (PIA 10) Alingatong August 3rd, 2006, 12:17 PM 2nd Lanao Del Norte Joint Session July 31, 2006, Monday The Provincial Board of Lanao del Norte convened with the Iligan City and Balo-i Municipal Councils for the second time last week resulting to the creation of a Technical Working Committee (TWC) which will probe into details relevant to the boundary dispute regarding national wealth share issues involving National Power Corporation. The TWC will be composed of five representatives from each of the three local governmental units. Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz acknowledged Congressman Abdullah Dimaporo and Governor Imelda Dimaporo’s cooperation for personally attending the joint session in Iligan City and expressed his hope for the issue to be resolved soon. He already indicated that Atty. Eulalio “Lally” Gaite of the City Legal Office will lead the City’s representatives to the TWC. (CIO / EAMayormita-ICTC) Alingatong August 3rd, 2006, 12:19 PM IT Training Center For Iligan OSY August 2, 2006, Wednesday The Information Technology / Computer Literacy and Lifeskills Center (ICLLC) at the City Social Works and Development (CSWD) office in Barangay Saray, Iligan City has formally opened today with a program from 9:00 o’clock in the morning till high noon that launched the EWB-SCALA project for out-of-school youths (OSY). The activity ended with the signing of the Memoranda of Agreement (the mother MOA and the sub-MOA) by all agencies involved in the IT literacy project and a ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Center (ICLLC). Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz personally commends CSWD Head Grace Joy O. Saquilabon for smoothing the progress of the preparation for the project. Other important personalities to grace the launching ceremony were Iligan City Vice-Mayor Henry C. Dy, Sangguniang Panlungsod (SP) Committee Chairman on Social Services and Day Care Chonilo O. Ruiz, SP Committee Chairman on Research, Science and Information Technology Voltaire I. Rovira, Atty. Nikki Badelles of the office of Congressman Badelles, representatives from the national government agencies such as the DSWD Region 10, Land Transportation Office (LTO), Technical Education Skills and Development Authority (TESDA), Department of Education (DepEd), Philippines Ports Authority (PPA), Philippines National Police (PNP), Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Girl Scouts of the Philippines (GSP), and the Philippines Information Agency (PIA). Representatives from the different departments of the Iligan City government and the local barangays, local TV and radio stations, and from the private sector, National Power Corporation (NPC), San Miguel Corporation and Holcim Philippines, were among the well-wishers of the newly-launched center. The Center (ICLLC) will start to operate tomorrow, August 3, with a pre-motivation session for 15 out-of-school-youths from the seven CSWD districts in Iligan City whose supervisors’ approval are required for all OSY candidates preferably endorsed by their local Pag-asa Youth Association chapters. Fifteen OSY trainees will compose each batch for every quarter of the year as targeted. Two candidates from each district will be entitled for the 15 available slots as of the current reckoning period allowing a single district to recommend three candidates, one with disability (PWD), hence, member barangays of each district will take turns on endorsing three candidates (including a PWD) for each quarterly term. The ICLLC is a joint project of the Social Technology Bureau of the Department of Social Works and Development (STB-DSWD, Manila), the DSWD Region 10, the Iligan City Government thru the CSWD, and Engineers Without Borders’ (EWB) SCALA of Canada. Social Officer IV Josefina B. Mabanta acts as center head for the ICLLC. A Canadian EWB-SCALA volunteer, Martin F. Giroux-Cook, and a Region 6 Filipino youth volunteer, Narciso P. Abad III (also incumbent VP of the National Federation of Pag-asa Youth Associations) conducted a trainers’ training at the ICLLC. Priscilla E. Maghanoy, Freddie R. Sumangit and Dennis E. Egagamao from the local CSWD underwent a month-long preparation as trainers of OSY with Raymel Jon M. Nadayag as the center’s technician. Joining them as on-call trainers were Roel L. Ubay-ubay, Rose Mae E. Ortiz, Cherilyn L. Obedencia and Emelyn A. Mayormita from the Information and Communications Technology Center (ICTC) under Councilor Voltaire I. Rovira’s headship. Engineers Without Borders (EWB), a Canadian non-governmental organization (NGO), reaches out to third world countries, specifically those in the African continent, with the Philippines being the only Asian country to benefit from one of their projects dubbed “Sharing Computer Access Locally and Abroad” (SCALA). Another Canadian volunteer, Ms. Sara Triggs will oversee the EWB-SCALA centers in the country for a prolonged period. Out-of-school youths eligible for the IT training are between 15 to 24 years old who have attended at least a year in high school and come from indigent families with a monthly income of less than PHP6,000. The Philippines is thankful to the EWB for making the country the only Asian recipient of its SCALA program. More details on the NGO and its noble programs can be viewed at www.ewb.ca. Cruz during the Center’s recent launching. Highlighting the inauguration was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) of the three-year project, which was jointly undertaken by the Iligan City government through the City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Office, the Department of Social Welfare and Development Region 10 (DSWD-10) and the Engineers Without Borders-Sharing Community Access Locally and Abroad (SCALA), a Canadian non-governmental organization. The City Social Welfare and Development (CSWD) Office identifies the needy Out-of-School Youth (OSY) and other disadvantaged youth, including youths with disabilities, and refers the list to the Computer Literacy Program, Cruz added. Trainees shall undergo a six-month computer education program. Aside from computer skills, the program involves teaching of life skills to include values education, counseling, population awareness and entrepreneurship skills. The program also includes on-the-job access to current job postings, scholarships and capital assistance for small business opportunities. In her speech, Sarah Triggs, EWB-SCALA Coordinator from Canada, challenged the parents and families of the beneficiaries and other members of the community to be involved in the project and thus help ensure sustainability and success of the program. “We donated 15 computer units for 15 trainees per training to give opportunities to the OSYs and other disadvantaged youth to enhance their employable skills and thus become productive and contributing members of society,” Triggs added. Other partner agencies working together to hammer out an integrated blueprint that would match skills to jobs are DepEd, TESDA, DOLE and the private sector, to connect graduates to the workforce or on to formal and informal educational institutes to further their training. Laguindingan town, Misamis Oriental and the cities of Ozamiz and Oroquieta also availed the ICT Center. It's approx. 86km terminal to terminal. That's kinda close considering the fact that both cities are highly urbanized... :) Alingatong August 9th, 2006, 09:20 AM That's true. Iligan has long been identified as Cagayan De Oro's twin city. The proximity of both highly urbanized cities led to the formulation of Cagayan de Oro- Iligan Industrial Corridor which economic ripple effect to the entire people of Northern Mindanao cannot be underestimated . boju August 9th, 2006, 10:11 AM If the Cagayan de Oro - Iligan Corridor will effectively materialized, its to called the Philippines is an industrialized country. Alingatong August 9th, 2006, 10:58 AM http://www.philippinebusiness.com.ph/images/tinagofalls1.gif Waterfalls Capital Iligan City is a good mix of unspoiled nature and hardcore industrialization. By: Maricar T. Manuzon Northern Mindanao’s Iligan City is a diamond in the rough. Under- explored by local and foreign tourists alike, it is one city which promises to captivate its visitors with its gifts of nature, intermingled with signs of industrialization. The city’s name was derived from the word ilihan or iliyan which means “fortress of defense.” Long before Spaniard Miguel Lopez de Legaspi’s expedition reached the Philippines in 1565, two of the peace-loving Higa-onon tribal groupings of Mindanao had to build an ilihan on their coastal settlements to secure them from the frequent attacks of pirates and savage tribes. Traces of the fortress can no longer be found, but the people’s peace-loving nature – evident in the harmonious co-existence of Christian, Muslim, and Higa-onon cultures – remained. Iligan City in Lanao del Norte used to fall under Region 12. In year 2000, however, it was reclassified under Region 10 which comprises Bukidnon, Camiguin, Misamis Oriental and Occidental, and Lanao del Norte. It is a major component of the Cagayan Iligan Corridor, one of the priority investment areas in the country. Filed under News Iligan City (8 August) — National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) President and CEO Dr. Alan T. Ortiz revealed that TransCo posted a net income of P9.13 billion for the first semester of operations this year. This is an increase of P605 million from the previous year’s figures for the same period. The state utility firm’s financial report also showed net utility revenue reaching p13.09 billion for the six-month period, or an increase of 6.1% from the firm’s revenues in the first semester of 2005, added Ortiz. Operating expenses meanwhile decreased by P1.53 billion from the projected budget of P5.49 billion for January to June this year. This performance was primarily due to the implementation of the interim Maximum Allowable Revenue (MAR) for the current year as approved by the Energy Regulation Commission (ERC) effective April 2006, said Ortiz. (PIA-10) Alingatong August 9th, 2006, 11:06 AM Iligan Mulls Freeze on Global's Assets www.abs-cbnnews.com Aug. 7, 2006 The local government of Iligan City is again pushing for the garnishment of the assets of Global Steelworks International Inc. in a bid to collect real-property taxes outstanding since the new owner of bankrupt National Steel Co. began operating in 2004, according to a legislator who hails from the area. Global took over the National Steel facilities in 2004 for P13.25 billion, with a down payment of P1 billion. National Steel shut down in 1999 due to weak domestic sales and cheap imports. In a phone interview, Rep. Alipio Badelles of Iligan said Global has been unable to pay its real-property taxes amounting to more than P100 million. This excludes taxes on equipment the steel company has been importing. "Global Steel owes the city. I’m not sure about the exact figure but it’s at least P100 million since it took over the [National Steel] facilities in 2004," Badelles told The Manila Times. Last year Vice-Mayor Henry Dy of Iligan City had said Global owes the local government some P177 million in real-property taxes. Global had said it is already producing steel for export to China. Left unresolved, the company’s tax liabilities and a possible disruption in operations due to the garnishment of its assets may jeopardize the jobs of new hires, Badelles said, adding some 1,000 residents have secured jobs in the company. The lawmaker said the city government and Global should begin negotiations to avert any disruption.(By NIEL V. The Project, which kicked-off last week and amounts to more than a million pesos, will cover the re-alignment of an in-line pump for water supply to directly reach its intended consumers. ICWS Manager Christine Milagros Orbe, ICWS-Planning Division Chief Jaime Sato and Financial Consultant Maricel Lagaras presented the General Overview of the city government’s 15-Year Water Improvement Project before the Iligan City Council session yesterday which included the proposed transmission line and valving system to solve existing water supply problems in the city. The Program of Works and feasibility study of the project already received the City Council’s approval during last week’s session. City Councilor Moises Dalisay, Jr., Committee Chair on Water and Energy, seeks legal advice from the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) on making the ICWS an independent body from the local city government to comply with a requisite for a zero-interest 8- to 15-year term loan from the Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) to help fund the 15-Year Water Improvement Plan which is close to PHP 500M. DANIDA’s loan application conditions require ICWS to have its own balance sheet, management board and statement of income independent from the city government’s fund. The Festival is being held under the auspices Saint Michael the Archangel Cathedral Parish Pastoral Council Church of Iligan City. Criteria (http://www.iligan-city.gov.ph/sam%20miguel%20rules.htm) Alingatong August 19th, 2006, 08:00 AM One of the highlights of this year's Iligan City fiesta celebration is a form of "panaad" or promise which is the "Diyandi", in fact, henceforth, it is the theme for every fiesta celebration in honor of this city's patron St. Michael the Archangel on September 29. According to an excerpt of a brochure written by Patrick Fernandez in 1985, like the play "comedia", "Diyandi" is another form of "panaad". It is the all-female folk dance of the Iligaynon. Traditionally preceding the comedia performance, the "Diyandi" portrays the courtship between the Maranao males and Higa-unon females represented by the symbolic exchange of handkerchiefs between the two groups. The "Comedia" is a cultural play depicting the conflict between good and evil where St. Michael the Archangel comes out victorious and triumphant over the devil. The 'Diyandi' Starting with the offering of gifts--an egg, a chick and ginger, the oration of praises in Maranao and Higa-unon dialects, the dancers, in parallel formation exchange positions from one line to the other. With the accompaniment of the agong, the dance climaxes in the holding of hands signifying the unity of the cultural community's worship of the "Senor." The dance ends with the folk song "Ang Buotan nga Iliganon" (The Good Iliganon), which has become an anthem of sorts for this city." Balondo prefers to have his official service vehicle carry the city government website label over using the usual ‘For Official Use Only” sticker which he has put on hold. The city official proposes posting www.iligan-city.gov.ph stickers to mark city government-owned vehicles suggesting that Iligan is globally competent modernization-wise. He added that this would also provide Iliganons easier access for reporting incidents and feedbacks regarding misdemeanors connected with city government service vehicle users when spotted. There are numerous scientific studies on how color affects our moods and outlook on life... Have you ever noticed that the colors in nature seldom invoke feelings of hostility or aggression? Instead, they seem to inspire a sense of wonder, awe and peace. The things we Love - our favorite color, food, place, person, or thing - also invoke feelings of joy and inner peace. They naturally brighten our mood and our day. Considering these thoughts, we seek to find a new "Happy Place" through the use of color. ...by Christine :) g0Rs August 31st, 2006, 03:51 PM We need chacha now – Iligan VM by Gladys @ 9:45 am. And in Iligan, September is equated with the fiesta season in honor of our patron Saint Michael the Archangel. Every Iliganon looks forward to this season to pay homage and give thanks to St. Michael who has blessed and protected Iligan from natural and man-made calamities. But aside from the religiosity of the occasion, Iliganons and non Iliganons alike look forward to the occasion for the merrymaking, fun, numerous events, street parties, lechon, and celebrations. Alingatong September 1st, 2006, 12:37 AM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/diyandi1.jpg DIYANDI FESTIVAL SA ILIGAN Folklore depicts Iligan's patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel as the protector of peace. During the 70's, at the height of the secessionist hostilities in Mindanao, people believed that Iligan remained untouched and safe from rebel attacks because of the miracles of St. Michael. One evening, when a hostile group was poised to attack Iligan City, the members retreated because they could not find the city as it was transformed into a lake. Another story told is that the Patron Saint makes his rounds in the evening as evidenced by amorseko grass on his clothes and muddy boots. These are just a few of the many stories about St. Michael. Even the story of his installation as patron saint of Iligan continues to inspire and endear him to each and every Iliganon. Thus, his feast every 29th of september, is a grand celebration in Iligan. In fact, it has transformed into a month-long festival, the DIYANDI FESTIVAL SA ILIGAN. Diyandi is a ritual performed by an all-female group portraying the courtship between the Maranao male and Higaonon female and offering this union and agricultural harvest to the Catholic Saint Michael the Archangel. Diyandi captures and mirrors the peaceful co-existence of Iligan's tri-people: Maranao Muslims, Higaonons and Christians. This ritual is performed during the 'Pagpakanaug" before the start of every novena, before the start of the stage play Comedia and before the procession of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario. boju September 1st, 2006, 01:45 AM Let me the one who will first greet you all a Merry-merry Christmas!!! http://i59.photobucket.com/albums/g283/boju4289/NaawanArc.jpg Photo: Naawan Arc of Friendship- winning the grand prize of the nationwide landmark-making contest “Christmasterpiece: Bayanihang Pasko 2005,” mounted by Lady’s Choice. latino September 1st, 2006, 03:37 AM http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g234/rottweiler9/calendar200485.jpg latino September 1st, 2006, 03:39 AM http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g234/rottweiler9/IMG_0898.jpg sakay ko ug silhig ani latino September 1st, 2006, 03:42 AM http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g234/rottweiler9/IMG_0982acopy.jpg kini kay ming lukso ko sa eroplano take dayon ko pix latino September 1st, 2006, 03:46 AM http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g234/rottweiler9/IMG_0883copy.jpg kini kya ge hulog ko sa sundalo nga akong tapad sa helicopter mau na lang naka kuha pa gyud ko ug picture latino September 1st, 2006, 03:52 AM http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g234/rottweiler9/motocross.jpg Alingatong September 1st, 2006, 03:52 AM :applause: :applause: Nice photos Latino. Pero could this new "mall" developments have a major impact on CDO's revenue since Iliganons usually go to CDO to shop? mao, coz im talking about the purchasing power of the people man gud. and its one of the primary gauge and the very visual proof that indeed the economy of a city is improving. dako lagi ug income ang city but ang income sa tao enough ba to sustain all these 'amenities'? dugay ra au dako ug income ang city, obvious kaau sa public service and insfrstructures but still maski wide na ang mga dalan, better public service, saktong tubig ug kurente etc etc but still why slow ang pag move sa iligan, its because of the purchasing power of its people...fortunately ang tao sa iligan ron naa nay kwarta and the presence of a mall in ilgan can be an indication that indeed the iliganon can make this amenity work. ang nakaparat sa iloilo, eversince ang mga ilonggos and bacolodnons have the money (mga haciendero bya na sila) so maski dili kaau dako ug income ang government nila, ang main factor nga nagpadako sa ilang city is their people itself, mga dato sila ug mga tao dats why masustain jud nila ang presence sa mga malls and all w/c at the same time creates job etc etc. so mahulog nga opposite states ang iligan and iloilo/bacolod but either way both cities/areas do really good man sad! micomplement lang bah...=) g0Rs September 3rd, 2006, 06:00 PM apil ba ang area sa una nga gigamit sa super 5(wala na ba ang super 5 dira dapita?) kay pananaw nako, daku jud sya kung apil tong super 5 area.
