May rumor na sisumulan na daw ang clearing ng lot na pagtatayuan ng LKK mall early next year. If it's true, construction of the vertical structures would probably start mid 2008.

Belmonte proclaimed new congressman

http://www.geocities.com/lchsspectrum/varf07.jpg

Now after a long protracted struggle and series of protests, Iligan City has a new congressman. Vicente "Varf" Belmonte Jr. (in photo) was finally proclaimed last Sept. 25 by the COMELEC Second Division as the winner of the congressional race in the May 14, 2007 election. He took his oath immediately after his proclamation as Representative of the First Congressional District of Iligan and Lanao del Norte. The final tally by the COMELEC shows the following results: Vicente Belmonte Jr. (Uno), 60,054 votes; Angelique Badelles (Kampi), 46,630; and former Lanao del Norte governor Imelda Dimaporo (Lakas-CMD) had 44,343. Meanwhile, members of the Resurrection of the Lord Chinese Filipino Catholic Community held a Thanksgiving Mass at the Resurrection of the Lord Church last Sept. 26 for Belmonte's final triumph.

Since the recent topic is about internet connection, I'll just share something about my internet speed.

My PLDT MyDSL connection was installed August 18, 2003.
Original speed - 384kbps
Bill Charge - P3,000.00 per month

As the years went on PLDT upgraded it from 384kbps to 512kbps, then to 768kbps, then to 1mbps (1024 kbps), then 2.2mbps.

And their recent upgrade is 5mbps now. The monthly Bill remained at 3k.

Here's some screenies of my internet connection speed.

Previous speed and the present upgraded speed
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc149/jcbroken/bandwidthupgrade.jpg
But here's something that blew me away.... Been enjoying this for several weeks already... Take a look on this screenie....
http://i218.photobucket.com/albums/cc149/jcbroken/399531.jpg

It looks like PLDT is still re-configuring their servers. Some subscribers have not yet enjoyed the most recent connection upgrade. Their recent configurations has created some headaches.... The speed is really fast but the downside is some web applications wont run anymore smoothly. Some IMs like AIM can only log-in by luck. Right now my torrents is on Passive mode which I hated.

^^There must be some explanation. The result of pldt's speedmeter could be based on their direct bandwidth (undistributed) and not on the subscriber's actual upload/download bandwidth. Why don't you try other speedmeter like 2wire.com, etc. I doubt if you get the same result. :)

Just talked to two of my friends who run internet cafes and they told me that they are also affected of the new configurations that PLDT is presently working on. They do enjoy the speed increase but some applications are really affected.

Hope PLDT will fix their configurations and how I wish permanent speed over 100mbps

Maybe Iligan will be the "NEXT BIG THING" in Region 10 and probably be the center of the Region soon.

In our city, we are not that much dependent on Bank loans because our Economic Enterprises are gaining. Local projects are done by LGU instead of the DPWH and Contractors. We save in middlemen and overpriced by these agencies. It helps a lot!

MindaNews' Timonera wins 2nd prize in "Everyday Islam" contest

(MindaNews/01 October) – MindaNews editor Robert “Bobby” Timonera of Iligan City won the second prize in the professional category of the “Everyday Islam” photo contest sponsored by the British Embassy and Newsbreak. Timonera is the only Mindanawon among four winners. Contest organizers received a total of 119 entries for the professional category and 36 for the amateur category.

Vicente Jaime Villafranca, a freelance photographer who covers Malacanang and contributes to foreign news agencies, won first prize for “School Bound,” a photo of four girls “whose eagerness to get an education would not be dampened by anything even as violent as the beheading of the Marines,” Newsbreak online magazine said.

Timonera’s entry, taken during a peace rally, is that of an old woman in black carrying a flaglet with this message: “Peace, where are you?” Villafranca will receive P25,000 cash prize while Timonera will get P10,000.

In the amateur category, Ma. Danielle Millanes Arafol of Las Piñas City won the cash prize of P15,000 for her photo of children during a rehearsal break for “Kalilintad” (Peace), a development play she helped stage.

Pepito Frias of Rodriguez, Rizal, won the second prize and P5,000 for “Different But One,” depicting a family of Christians and Muslims praying together. The board of judges included Colin Crorkin, deputy head of mission of the British Embassy in Manila; Andrew Picken, director of the British Council Manila; Romeo Gacad of Agence-France Presse; and Glenda Gloria, managing editor of Newsbreak.

The criteria for judging: 20 % for technical quality; 20 % artistic composition; 40 % cultural and social relevance; and 20 % emotional appeal.

All entries to the contest are now part of the British Embassy’s photo bank, to be used in their “Engaging with the Islamic World” program, but copyrights will remain with the individual photographers, Newsbreak said.

If only the previous city public officials of Iligan many years ago were not afraid to make the city highly urbanized, everything would be different now.

For example, Coca-cola Bottler's Company Plant was originally to Rise in Iligan city many years ago but the city government at that time refused to grant them permission to build their plant site here.... As a result Cagayan de Oro city benefited Coca-Cola's plant...

Dapat nga mangutang pa ang Iligan to finance some of its major projects. Bulok-bulok, lubak-lubak at napakaliit (narrrow) ng mga roads sa Iligan even those major highways and main thorough fairs. UP leads consortium to strengthen Philippine engineering
Jo. Florendo B. Lontoc

Engineering schools can help the country effectively attain economic growth if they work together. This is precisely why seven universities, led by UP, have formed a consortium that will provide generous graduate scholarships, set up a faculty development program, develop research infrastructure, and fund research programs in Engineering and Computer Science. All seven have comprehensive and mature graduate Engineering programs and all seven will contribute to creating a pool of high-level engineers who can jumpstart the economy through radical innovations.

Through a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on August 17, 2007 at the Quezon Hall, UP, Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU), Central Luzon State University (CLSU), De La Salle University (DLSU), Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT), Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), and University of San Carlos (USC) formed the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) Consortium.

During the MOU signing, UP College of Engineering Dean Rowena Cristina Guevara explained that high-level engineers are needed to make gains in Science and Technology (S&T) and to create synergy between S&T and Engineering, which can spur economic growth. They are key to attracting foreign investments and producing higher-value goods, she said.

However, based on the UNESCO benchmark, the Philippines sorely lacks high-level engineers. The benchmark is 3.4 Ph.D. engineers for every 10,000 people, but the country only has 1.08. The consortium aims to produce 112 doctoral and 596 master’s degree graduates by 2012, thereby significantly improving the country’s ratio.

An attractive scholarship program is vital to reaching ERDT’s targeted number of graduates, Dean Guevara said. She reported that UP has a very low graduation rate in its graduate Engineering programs despite many available scholarships because most of the students are lured by high-paying jobs.

President Roman and Dean Guevara said they had secured President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s commitment to fund the project through the Department of Science and Technology (DOST). The project will require a total of P6.5 billion over the next 10 years. According to Dean Guevara, the project had been presented to, and was met with approval and support from, Malacañang, senators, and congressmen.

Led by Dean Guevara, a steering committee composed of the heads of the Engineering and Computer Science programs of the universities had earlier worked out the nature of the consortium and is now finalizing how activities will be implemented and formulating a technology road map for the country in the fields of energy, environment and infrastructure, information and communications technology, and semiconductor electronics.

Under the terms of the MOU, the universities will promote exchange and visits among graduate students and junior and senior faculty members; team teaching and courseware development among the member institutions; collaboration, joint publications, and sharing of resources; exchange of information and materials in the field; joint conferences and academic programs; and, where courses are compatible, cross-enrollment of the students. The MOU is renewable after three years.

The consortium currently has an advisory committee composed of experts from the DOST, the Commission on Higher Education, and the industry. This committee also includes Silicon Valley entrepreneur and UP honoris causa Diosdado Banatao, who has been supporting the UP College of Engineering for the past eight years through the Banatao Fellowship at the University of California in Berkeley. Last September 2, Banatao pledged $500,000 to the College.

Caption: Signatories to the MOU are (front row) ADMU’s Dr. Fabian Dayrit representing Fr. Bienvenido Nebres, CLSU’s Dr. Ruben Sevilleja, DLSU’s Bro. Armin Luistro, UP’s Dr. Emerlinda Roman, USC’s Fr. Behind them are Dr. Nathaniel Libatique of ADMU, Dean Rowena Guevara of UPD-COE, UPD Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs Lorna Paredes, and UP Vice President for Academic Affairs Amelia Guevara.

Agree on this. Iligan was developed ahead of CDO and other Mindanao cities because of the major industries. I think previous city administrations thought such industries will be enough to sustain the city's economy. If not for the NPC Agus Complex, these industries would have operated somewhere else. But fate favored Iligan City and the industries were established. However, fate also meant the economic status of Iligan would go where the National Steel Corp. would go. The coconut industry (Granexport) became a sunset industry. US Bases Subic & Clark refused Pilmico's offer to supply all the needed flour because the flour mill is located beside two (2) cement plants. The rising cost of power also resulted to closure of some industries. Most of the industries were establsihed in the 1960s and 1970s and their industrial processes were facing stiff competition from newly established industries utilizing modern hi-tech processes and aptly located in areas with stable peace and order conditions (Calabarzon). The islamic-separatist movement of MILF/MNLF added to the woes of all Mindanao cities. But the Iligan economy has awaken from slumber. It began about 4 or 5 years ago with support from the National Government. First and foremost is the re-opening of the NSC. NSC's operations created a domino effect on other indsutries as well as other sectors. NSC - "ang bubong ng bayan"

The tall, 19-year-old-son of former boxer and coach used his height advantage to the hilt as he finally put one over the fancied but seemingly tired Tipon of Pacific Heights, 26-24, in their featherweight class encounter that sent a sizeable, yet appreciative crowd rising in awe. “Masaya po ako dahil kahit papano, nakabawi po ako sa kanya [Tipon],” uttered Tacuyan, whose mother Nenita is a policewoman with a rank of SPO1 and assigned at Camp Crame. “Sa ngayon po ay ’hinahabol ko na mapasama ako sa qualifying sa Olympics at ‘yung sa SEA Games.”

It was the first victory for Tacuyan in his three meetings with Tipon, although it can be said that Tipon was actually used to bantamweight, and not in the featherweight class which is three kilos heavier.

Yet Manny Lopez, president of the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines, said Tipon is indeed a bantamweight, but nevertheless added that “it should be a wake-up call for him [Tipon], that he can be beaten by upcoming boxers.”

While a win is a win, Tacuyan himself mentioned that his win came rather easy, saying Tipon was just tired and still reeling from a big loss in last week’s ranking tournament in Czech Republic, where he was beaten by a Hungarian.

“Tingin ko pagod lang siya at walang stamina,” noted Tacuyan, who has been with the national training pool for four years. “Pero kahit papano masaya na rin ako at nanalo ako for the first time sa kanya.”

The victory propeled Tacuyan to the next round of the week-long tournament serving as performance test by Abap for upcoming training poolers. Also advancing were Rey Enoc (Iligan city), Emerson Morcoso (Bulacan) and Vergil Basadre (Misamis Oriental) in the 57-kg class.
Also making it to the next round in the 51-kg category were Philippine Army’s Violeto Payla, Frederick Rodriguez of Malaybalay, Bukidnon and Rhiel Mandate (Cebu City).

Payla, gold medalist in Doha, proved too strong against Calinan, Davao City’s Welbert Apas, producing the quickest victory for the night—a referee-stopped contest due to injury, with still 1:46 minutes to go in the first round, while Mandate won over Rex Saludar of Davao Del Norte-B in the same fashion—an RSC due to body blows, with still 1:47 minutes to go in the second round.

Security Camera System Updates
EA Mayormita

A number of detractors who previously held cynical views of the Security Camera System have been enlightened when the concerted efforts of Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz, Vice Mayor Henry C. Dy and Councilor Voltaire I. Rovira (among the strongest enduring advocates of the Project) received highest recognition from President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who officially launched the Project through a ceremonial switching on of the Security Camera System.

The PHP8.9M-Security Camera System, which faced allegations of hitting a whopping PHP65M-mark from skeptics, has 48 security camera units in public places and other strategic locations in and around the city. The Project is a major step to bump up efforts in the maintenance and improvement of peace and order in Iligan.

Another major event that took place during President Arroyo's visit at the Iligan City National High School Gymnasium last September 24 was the launching of the Iligan City government's redesigned official website with the new domain name www.iligan.gov.ph with a recorded 8,000 hits during the fiesta week alone. Both the Security Camera System Project and Iligan City's official website are under the Information and Communications Technology Center (ICTC) of the City Administrator's Office with the guardianship of City Council Committee Chairman on Information and Communications Technology Voltaire I. Rovira. On the same occasion, 2,300 members of the Civilian Volunteers Organization took their Pledge of Loyalty and 900 Purok/Zone presidents of Iligan's Zone for Peace and Prosperity took oath before the President.

Iliganons worldwide were in for a real treat when they were granted access to view selected cameras like the Cathedral interior and front yard (beginning with the Pagpakana-ug), City Public Plaza (which hosted shows, competitions, live entertainment and the ICTC's Information Kiosk in partnership with PLDT that showcased the Security Camera System and offered free internet access and long distance calls to lucky visitors), a glimpse of Quezon and Roxas Avenue junction where a favorite hangout is also visible, and the most-awaited annual Kasadya Streetdancing festival which converges at the Anahaw Amphitheatre in the City Hall Complex of Buhanginan Hills, Pala-o, where contingents from local and neighboring places compete before thousands of live audience. Starting this year, not only those who physically visit Iligan witnessed the highlights of the Diyandi Festival but also thousands of viewers who viewed it live through the Iligan City government website.

With the Security Camera System now in full operation, Iligan is assured of a sophisticated tool which puts the city in the lead when it comes to the employment of technology in the exercise of its duties to serve its constituents.

Chef's On Parades on its 25th year!
By Ed Dychauco
Of Pots & Pans
Thursday, October 04, 2007

I ATTENDED the Chefs On Parade (COP) in Baguio City last week. It was a 3-day affair which started on the 27th till the 29th. This prestigious culinary event is usually held in Metro Manila but in the recent years, they have moved the venue to Baguio City. This year's event marks their 25th (Silver Anniversary) year and was well attended by many culinary enthusiasts from all over the Philippines.

Venue for this year was the spacious and grand Baguio Country Club, the beautiful and well-constructed SM Mall and Camp John Hay. Weather was very cooperative for the first 2 days. The sun was shining brightly yet the weather was cool during the day and chilly at night, dipping down to about 20 degrees! Rain started to pour on the last day but nobody really cared because we were all having a grand time in the Summer Capital of the Philippines! There was fog day in and day out which makes the place more mysterious and eerie(?) but nevertheless, it was exciting!

Several schools and establishments joined the competitions. Some the schools who participated included the following: Angele University Foundation, BC-SAT Tesda, Center for Culinary Arts, Manila, De la Salle University, Dasmarinas, Colegio de Pampanga, First Asian Institute, Holy Angel University, Luzon College, Lyceum University, Lyceum, Subic, Northwestern University, Iligan Medical Center, Pangasinan State University, Pine City College, San Sebastian Cavite, St. Jude Manilka, St. Mary's University, University of Pangasinan, University of Perpetual Help, Isabela, PWU, ISHORE, Divine Word Vigan, University of Northern Philippines, University of Baguio, University of Cordillera, and many others. Hotels & Restaurants within Baguio City also participated in the professional division. Grand Champion for the student division went to the University of Baguio while the professional division went to Baguio Country Club.

Some of the events includes: Table Setting & Bed Making (Wedding Theme), Bridal Bouquet & Floral Arrangement, Cordillera Fusion Cuisine, Dream Team Cuisine, Classical & Pinoy Cuisine, Fruit & Vegetable Carving, Wedding Cake Decorating, Cold Seafood & Meat Platter, Mocktails, Cocktails, Flairtending, Quiz Bee, Classical & Pinoy Desserts, Ice Carving, Bellman's, Flambe, and many others.

Well-known and respected judges like Penk Ching (of Pastry Bin), Jill Sandique, James Antolin (Program Director, CCA), Dolly Dy (Editor of Flavor Magazine), Norma Chiquiamco (Editor of Food Magazine), Nana Ozaeta (Editor of F&B Magazine), Jessie Sincioco (Le Souffle), Katherine Y. Santos (Happy Living), Joan Limoanco (Unilever) and many, many others.

Culinary demonstrations were also done by the Unilever Food Solutions, Nestle & San Miguel Foods. Mr. Mel Padua, a multi-awarded "flairtender" also did an amazing exhibition prior to the flairtending competition.

Awarding ceremonies were held at Camp John Hay. Opening and closing ceremonies were hosted by Mr. Chinggoy Alonzo, a well-respected character actor.

The trip going up to Baguio passing through the scenic Kennon Road in the middle of the night was simply exciting. The air getting cooler by the minute until we reach the city. And because the activities started early and ended up late, we never really got the chance to do some sight-seeing, except for SM mall and visiting Baguio's Cathedral to pray. Getting out of Baguio was another story. We have to go through the other route, Marcos Highway. We left with a heavy heart because we have learned to love the place!

NSO Picks CRO Iligan, ‘Most Outstanding Civil Registry Office'
by the City Information Office

The Civil Registrar's Office of Iligan, headed by Ms. Georgette Dacup, will be honored next week by the National Statistics Office as one of the Most Outstanding Civil Registry Offices in the country for the year 2006.

This was learned in a letter of invitation received by Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz from NSO Administrator and Civil Registrar General Carmelita Ericta, requesting the local chief executive and the civil registrar to be present in an awarding ceremony during the 5th National Convention of Solemnizing Officers (5NCSO) to be held at Atrium, Limketkai Center, Cagayan de Oro City, on October 10, 2007.

Though basis were not spelled out in the letter, Dacup revealed in an interview that NSO values the efforts of the city administration in conducting mobile registrations in remote barangays, mass weddings and tribal marriage documentation which caused a dramatic increase in the number of local registration.

She further disclosed that NSO has also allocated Mayor Cruz a time during the occasion to share his experience as a solemnizing officer.

The 5NCSO is a gathering of Solemnizing Officers of various religions, religious sects and denominations, City or Municipal Mayors, members of the judiciary, and the Civil Registrars to interact and discuss marriage laws and registration procedures.

Business chambers urged to go for FOSS
Written by Allen V. Estabillo / MindaNews

(MindaNews/04 October) -- A United Nation's-funded organization advocating the development and use of the Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) in the country is tapping business groups in Mindanao to help promote it across the island.

Dr. Francisco Sarmiento III, project officer of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP)-International Open Source Network (IOSN)-Asean+3, said they have initially discussed with leaders of at least two business chambers in Mindanao on the possibility of adopting FOSS in their areas.

He said the response was positive when they introduced FOSS and its development prospects to officials of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Sarangani Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

"Davao (Chamber) is studying the possibility of deploying FOSS. So right now we're trying to strengthen the groups that will eventually provide technical support for them," he said in a press conference in Koronadal City.

Sarmiento visited Koronadal to grace the two-day Open Technology Fair, an event that showcased FOSS, organized by the Koronadal National Comprehensive High School.

The activity was part of the Software Freedom Day 2007 celebration lecture series spearheaded by the IOSN.

Sarmiento said they are presently pushing SMEs and civil society groups or non-government organizations (NGOs) to adopt FOSS instead of using the expensive proprietary software to help reduce their operational expenses.

He said IOSN and various FOSS advocates have been distributing a set of compiled open source software that are ready for use by SMEs and NGOs.

He said these software ranges from basic to advanced operational tools of small to medium businesses and civil society groups.

"These are software that can be used as alternatives to the popular proprietary tools in the market. But the big difference is that these are free and users don't have to worry about paying for licenses or related charges," he said.

Sarmiento said they are presently working with several colleges and universities in the country for the establishment of Openhubs or technical support bases for open source software.

In Mindanao, he said they are closely coordinating with the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology and several institutions in Bukidnon, Davao and General Santos City.

He said they are also arranging collaborations with several FOSS advocacy groups in the island to help provide technical support for SMEs and NGOs that would adopt and eventually migrate to FOSS.

"The business sector is willing to embrace FOSS but they also pointed out that there should be a ready technical support base for it and that's what we are trying to address through these collaborations," he said.

Aside from SMEs and NGOs, Sarmiento said, they are also trying to arrange the possibility of deploying FOSS in local government units. During his visit in Koronadal, Sarmiento introduced the Community Health Information Tracking System (CHITS) project and the Sahana open source disaster management system to local government and health officials of Sultan Kudarat province.

He said Dr. Gerte Pingoy, deputy governor for health of Sultan Kudarat, initially signified interest to deploy the CHITS and Sahana projects in its rural health system as part of its ongoing modernization initiative.

The CHITS project, developed by the Medical Informatics Unit of University of the Philippines Manila, is a web-based open-source health information system designed for rural health units. It integrates public health vertical program information and presents a unified view of data for decision-making.

It was among the 151 finalists in the Stockholm Challenge 2006. Some 1,100 foreign projects from 53 countries applied for the program.

Sahana is an open source disaster management system used to help coordinate disaster relief efforts. It was utilized during the tsunami relief works in Sri Lanka and in the Guinsaugon tragedy in Leyte. The Sahana software helped the National Disaster Coordinating Council and local officials monitor the location and number of victims in each temporary relief center around the affected areas.

Mittal plans $1.6-B Philippine plant

By Michael Lim Ubac
Inquirer
Last updated 05:24am (Mla time) 10/05/2007

MUMBAI -- As President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo began a state visit to India, Indian businessmen firmed up plans for investments in the Philippines, in banking, pharmaceuticals and public health, totaling more than $155 million.

But the biggest investment plan is Indian steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal’s plan for a new steel plant in the Philippines worth $1.6 billion.

Mittal is the president and chief operating officer of Arcelor Mittal, the combine of the world’s No. 1 and No. 2 steel companies, Arcelor and Mittal Steel.

Vinod Mittal, managing director of the Mittal Group’s Ispat Industries, called on President Arroyo Thursday at the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, where Arroyo is billeted.

Ispat Industries, which owns Global Steelworks Philippines, which it acquired in 2004 for $225 million.

Global Steelworks is the Philippines’ largest steel mill, formerly operated by National Steel Corp., in the southern city of Iligan.

The Iligan plant has an annual output of three million metric tons, supplying cold rolled coils and flat steel products in the Philippines and other countries.

The Confederation of Indian Industries (CII), India’s largest business group, told Arroyo and her delegation of Cabinet officials and members of Congress that the Philippines was now the “fastest emerging market in Asia.”

The Philippines and India, the world’s second most populous country with 1.1 billion people, are the two “rapidly expanding markets in the region and the world,” said Banmali Agrawala, CII deputy chairman.

Agrawala said India was interested in the pharmaceutical and mining business, alternative energy and business process outsourcing, among other sectors of the Philippine economy.

He said the greatest challenge for both countries was to see to it that economic growth would become the main vehicle to alleviate poverty. He said both were on this path.

In response, said she was impressed with India’s growth that “fueled a knowledge economy.”

“We hope to receive more investments from India,” she said. “We are bullish on the 21st century India and on your ability to help drive positive change in the world. And we want to do business with you.” With INQUIRER.net

This is good news for Iligan. I hold Mittal arcelor in my stock portfolio and it has been really good (check finance. google. com and enter MT for stock symbol). Two other companies that might be interested are BHP billiton (BHP) and POSCO (PKX). these are the biggest steel producers in the world.

The three biggest emerging markets (CHINA, INDIA and Brazil) are all hungry for steel. they will gobble up most of the steel produced in the world.

PGMA invites Indian investors to join bidding for privatized gov't assets

MUMBAI, India (via PLDT) (5 October) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has invited Indian businessmen to participate in the bidding for state properties under the government's privatization program.

The President extended the invitation during her meeting Thursday with members of the Confederation of Indian Industries at the Taj Majal Hotel.

"We invite Indian corporations to participate in the bidding for our asset privatization and to invest in Philippine government-owned and controlled corporations," the President said.

She said the Philippines has cut red tape and liberalized its visa policy to make it easier for investors and visitors to enter the country.

A good example of a privatized government asset is the Iligan Steel Mill in Iligan City which was acquired by India's Ispat Industries Ltd., owner of Global Steelworks Philippines, for $225 million in 2004.

Before it was privatized, Iligan Steel was operated by the National Steel Corporation (NSC).

Ispat Industries managing director Vinod Mittal paid a courtesy call on the President Thursday afternoon at the Taj Majal Hotel and briefed her on the status of his company's operation in Iligan.

Mittal said they have spent hundreds of millions of dollars in upgrading the Iligan steel mill, already the largest single investment so far of an Indian company in the country.

Ispat Industries' Iligan steel mill, which has an annual output of three million metric tons (MTs), supplies the requirements for cold rolled coils and flat steel products in the Philippines and other countries. (OPS)

PGMA hails new $1.6-billion investment of India's Ispat Industries in RP

NEW DELHI, India (via PLDT) (5 October) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo hailed today the planned $1.6-billion new investment of Ispat Industries Ltd., owner of Global Steelworks Philippines, which is so far the biggest single Indian investment in the Philippines.

The President made the statement during the forum of the Filipino-Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and India's Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Oberoi Hotel here this afternoon.

The President said that because of the highly conducive investment climate in the Philippines, Global Steelworks now joins the billion-dollar investments made by America's Texas Instruments and AES, Hanjin Industries of Korea and Marubeni Corporation of Japan.

Ispat Industries Managing Director Vinod Mittal reported on their plan to establish a new integrated steel plant in southern Philippines during a courtesy call on the President Thursday afternoon at the Taj Majal Hotel in Mumbai.

"Global Steelworks of Mittal joins our billion dollars club by informing us of their plan to set up an integrated steel plant in southern Philippines involving investments of $1.6 billion," the President said.

As part of the government's asset privatization program, Global Steelworks Philippines acquired in 2004 for $225 million the Philippines' largest steel mill in Iligan City, formerly operated by the National Steel Corporation (NSC).

During his courtesy call, Mittal reported to the President that they have already spent hundreds of millions of dollars in upgrading the Iligan steel mill operation that has an output of three million metric tons (MTs) per year.

Mittal said they now supply the requirements for various steel products in the Philippines and other countries. (OPS)

WITH $2-B INVESTMENTS
Arroyo back Saturday night from India

By Michael Lim Ubac
Inquirer
Last updated 07:38pm (Mla time) 10/06/2007

NEW DELHI (Via PLDT)--President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was to return to Manila Saturday night after obtaining about US$2 billion in new investments from Indian companies.

The President was to plane in at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport at 9 p.m., ending a two-nation swing that also took her to China. China and India are among the fastest-growing economies in the world.

“With India now one of the world’s top economies with a new middle class of half a billion people, [India's] internal market demand and domestic consumption can have a direct and positive impact on us in terms of job creation, balance of trade and investment,” the President said.

Trade Secretary Peter Favila and Agriculture Secretary Arthur Yap said the Indian investments amounted to at least $2 billion.

These include the $1.6 billion new investment of Ispat Industries Ltd, owner of Global Steelworks Philippines, so far the biggest single investment by an Indian firm in the Philippines.

In a speech Friday at a forum of the Filipino-Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry and India’s Associated Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Arroyo said that Global Steel was pouring in new investments to the Philippines because of the highly conducive investment climate.

Global Steel thus joins the billion-dollar investments to the country earlier made by America’s Texas Instruments and AES, Hanjin Industries of Korea and Marubeni Corp. of Japan, she told Indian businessmen.

“Global Steel of Mittal joined our billion dollar club by informing us of their plans to set up an integrated steel plant in southern Philippines involving investments of $1.6 billion,” the President said.

She later told reporters that steel magnate Lakshmi N. Mittal personally called her up to confirm the new investment.

In 2004, Global Steelworks Philippines acquired the country’s largest steel mill in Iligan City, formerly operated by the National Steel Corp. for $225 million.

India and the Philippines also agreed to set up a joint commission that would explore ways to further boost bilateral trade and investments.

Both countries signed several agreements to strengthen economic relations, particularly on the importation of cheaper medicines, expansion of business process outsourcing and call centers in the Philippines, deals on renewable energy and health care, and cooperation in fighting terrorism.

No new trade agreements were signed in China, but Arroyo officially inaugurated a cargo terminal in Shandung province, a joint venture between a Chinese firm and Filipino businessman Enrique Razon.

From China, Arroyo flew to India for a three-day visit. On Thursday, the President visited Mumbai, India's business hub, where she invited Indian pharmaceutical companies to set up plants in the Philippines to help cut the price of medicines by half.

She also witnessed the signing of a $35-million agreement between the Indian State Trading Corp. and the Philippine International Trading Corp. (PTIC) for the purchase of medicines which will be re-sold at the government's “Botika ng Bayan” outlets.

Indian software companies such as Infosys Technologies Ltd. and Tata Consultancy Services Ltd. have also entered into joint ventures in information technology services in the telecommunication and banking sectors in the Philippines over the past two years.

Arroyo hoped that India's fast economic growth would translate into more investments in the Asian region, including the Philippines.

India's Steel Conglomerate To Put $1.6 billion In The Philippines
October 6, 2007 10:43 a.m. EST

Paul Icamina - AHN News Writer

Iligan City, Philippines (AHN)-Global Steelworks is an unassuming complex in this unassuming industrial hub in Mindanao, southern Philippines. But it is the largest steel mill in the Philippines and owned by the world's biggest steel combine.

It symbolizes India's gung-ho presence in the country, in this case in Lanao del Norte province.

Global Steel Philippines is managed by Global Ispat Holdings Limited, a leading integrated steel maker and the largest private sector producer of hot rolled coils in India.

Ispat, which runs Global Steelworks, wants to build a $1.6-billion steel plant in the country, Ispat managing director Vinod Mittal told President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her official visit to India that ended last Friday.

Ispat joins the billion-dollar investments made by America's Texas Instruments and AES, Hanjin Industries of Korea and Marubeni Corporation of Japan.

Its huge steel mill, which produces 3 million metric tons of cold rolled coils and flat steel products each year, was acquired for $225 million in 2004 by Ispat from the National Steel Corp., which formerly ran the country's flagship steel firm.

An expansion scheme costing 6 billion pesos ($134.5 million) is now the largest Indian exposure in the country, according to trade and industry officials.

Global Steelworks is the largest property tax payer in the city and generates several million pesos in payroll each month for over 3,800 employees.

Before it closed in 1999, the steel mill had about 3,000 employees. It was already considered the city's economic engine. The city then lost about 30 percent of potential revenue from its largest employer.

Today, Global Steelworks is one of the largest steel manufacturers in Southeast Asia with manpower of more than 3,800. It supplies most of the domestic demand for flat steel products and exports the rest to Asian countries.

From January to August 2007, Indian investments in the Philippines totaled 595 million pesos ($12.6 million). That might not look much, but it was an increase of almost 24 percent compared to last year and ranks the subcontinent 12th among the country's top foreign investors.

Trade is lopsided. Philippine exports to India, led by electronics, posted $119.5 million in 2006 while imports of Indian goods such as meat, wheat and iron finished products amounted to $400.9 million.

Arroyo back in Manila from India visit

President Arroyo on Saturday night arrived in Manila after her three-day visit to India, bringing home more than $2 billion worth of trade and investments.

During her arrival speech, the President announced that the biggest investment she brought home is the $1.6 billion investment from Ispat Industries Ltd. that will be used for the establishment of the first large steel mill in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.

"… we expect the steel mill will also provide about as many jobs at least or even more than Texas Instruments for the people of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte," she said.

The President highlighted the $1.6-billion investment of the Ispat Industries Ltd., the owner of Global Steel Works Philippines, for the development of an integrated steel plant in Southern Philippines.

Mrs. Arroyo was informed about the investment during her meeting with Ispat Industries managing director Vinod Mittal two days ago in Mumbai.

"Global Steel of Mittal joined our billion-dollar club by informing us of their plans to set up an integrated steel plant in southern Philippines involving investments of $1.6 billion," the President said.

Global Steel Works used to be the National Steel Corp., which was acquired by the Philippine National Bank and which in turn sold it to Ispat Industries for $225 million in 2004.

The President also announced the five agreements worth some $170 million she signed with the Indian government to assure the continuous supply of low-cost medicines into the Philippines.

A memorandum of agreement between the Philippine International Trading Corp. (PITC) and the Indian State Trading Corp. was signed last Friday in New Delhi for the purchase of $35 million worth of quality but affordable medicines from India.

"Our massive spending on health care includes importing pharmaceuticals from India as part of our program to cut in half the price of medicines commonly bought by the poor," the President said.

A distributorship agreement between Macropharma Corp. and Emcure Pharmaceuticals Limited was also signed that is worth $75 million over five years.

Under the deal, Emcure would provide Macropharma with the exclusive marketing and sale in the Philippines of drugs in renal diseases including anti-rejection drugs for renal transplant and anti-cancer care.

The third memorandum of agreement signed was between Panacea Biotech Ltd. of India and Family Vaccine and Specialty Clinics Inc. of the Philippines for the importation and distribution of medicines and vaccines leading to the setup of 100 additional clinics providing quality and affordable health care to at least 500,000 Filipinos.

The transaction value was pegged at $10 million for a period of two years.

Indian filmmaker Aditya Raj Kapoor, considered as part of the royal family of "Bollywood," has also committed to make a film in the Philippines next year worth $10 million.

President Arroyo noted that the reason the Indian filmmaker decided to shoot a film in the Philippines was because he got to meet with the President.

A memorandum of agreement was also signed between the Philippines IPVG Corp. and Credence Analytics Pvt. Ltd. for a special purpose joint-venture vehicle that will provide business process outsourcing services to the banking and financial sector in various countries around the world.

The deal is expected to generate around $50 million worth of investments in one year.

Mrs. Arroyo also announced that the Philippine government was able to secure a $50-million credit line from the Export and Import Bank of India.

"We hope this can finance transactions that will correct the lopsided nature of our trade in favor of India," the President said.

"With India now one of the world’s top economies with a new middle class of half a billion people, your internal market demand and domestic consumption can have a direct and positive impact on us in terms of job creation, balance of trade and investment," she added.

The President announced that she would be bringing to India a business delegation comprising the members of the Philippine construction industry to look at the possibility of Filipino firms working on infrastructure projects in India.

"They’re going into a massive infrastructure program. We should get into their construction contracts," the President said.

Mrs. Arroyo flew to India for a three-day visit that has seen her call on New Delhi to increase trade with her country as part of the South Asian nation's "Look East" foreign policy.

New Delhi launched a "Look East" policy in the early 1990s aimed at forging ties with the fast-growing economies of Southeast Asia, but analysts say relations with the Philippines have been lagging with bilateral trade below the billion-dollar mark.

Her trip was the first visit by a Philippine president after a decade.

Earlier, Malacañang announced that some Indian companies have committed to President Arroyo to set up call centers and training facilities in Manila, Camarines Sur, Iloilo, Davao and other provinces in the country.

Praj Industries will set up a multi-million dollar bio-ethanol plant in the Philippines. Meanwhile, an Indian company, Kalpataru Power Transmission, will participate in the bidding for the privatization of the National Power Corporation’s transmission grid in December.

Apart from the investments, the President also witnessed the signing of a number of bilateral agreements with India.

Among these are the Framework of Philippines-India Bilateral Relations; Agreement to Establish the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation; Philippines-India Joint Declaration for Cooperation to Combat International Terrorism and the Memorandum of Agreement in the Field of Health and Medicine.

Also signed were the Memorandum of Agreement on Enhanced Cooperation in the Field of Renewable Energy; Memorandum of Understanding on Cooperation between the Foreign Service Institutes of the Philippines and India and; Memorandum of Agreement on the Waiver of Visa Requirements for Holders of Diplomatic and Official Passports.

Before her visit to India, the President also flew to China amid the controversial broadband deal with ZTE Corp.

Mrs. Arroyo’s return to the country comes a day after a new impeachment complaint was filed against her at the House of Representatives.

Tri-media forum, fellowship held in Iligan

MICHAEL MEDINA
Online editor

ILIGAN CITY: About 80 tri-media practitioners from the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Ozamiz and Iligan gathered here Saturday, Oct. 6, for the First Regional Media Forum and Fellowship, with the aim of enhancing the media profession as well as renew camaraderies.

Sponsored by the Call for Justice Movement (CFJM), the event carried the theme, “Unity for Truth and Development” and was held at D’Zyr Resto Bar.

“This forum is organized in order to heal the divisions among media men brought about by the last elections, CFJM chair and veteran broadcaster Ver Quimco said.

The whole-day affair was divided into discussions given respectively by lawyers Demosthenes Plando, CFJM vice-president, Rudolph Jularbal, standards authority officer of the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) and Archbishop Elinito Galledo.

Also in attendance are Mayor Lawrence Cruz, lawyer Perfecto Chung of Transco, KBP Regional Coordinator and DXOC-AM station manager Delia Rosal, retired city prosecutor Norma Siao and Rene Fe Padilla, executive director of Watch Inc.

In his message, Transco’s Chung called on the media to “report the facts and refrain from adding personal comments to news reports.”

“Media is not a business but a calling and a vocation: to serve the community by giving them the correct information. Keep the profession in high esteem, report the news as it happens,” he advised.

In his keynote address, Cruz reminded participants on the importance of truth in news stories. “Being truthful is not only about not telling lies but also not telling half-truths,” he said.

Shortly after the mayor, Bishop Galido made his talk on the media as a tool for social communication. “Because of the media and advancing technology, the world is reduced into a small village,” he said.

Galido went further in describing media’s role today in the lives of the people as “not only entertain and inform but also becomes a vehicle for selling, instrument of power, the last tribunal of justice, surrogate parent, alternative school and the producer of the so-called culture of want.”

After lunch, Jularbal made his talk on “Social Responsibility and Ethical Standards of Broadcasting” and challenged the journalists present “to use the power of the media responsibly, in line with the journalist’s ethical practice.”

“Our rights end when the rights of others begin,” was his beginning statement.

“Self-restraint must be imposed by persons who exercise the freedom upon themselves freely and voluntarily, with the realization of the potency of the power welded,” he said.

“It is media’s obligation to present balanced news. Proper treatment should be given so as to distinguish news from commentaries,” he added.

The forum ended with a picture taking and fellowship.

Library Going OPAC
Written by Antonette Lomosad & Maico Mejorada

IMCC library enhances its facilities for an easier more convenient research of the students by installing the On-line Access Catalog better know as OPAC system.

OPAC is a computerized online cataloguing of all Library holdings. It is widely used in most school libraries especially in State Colleges and Universities nowadays. IMCC, aspiring for a university status, will utilized these automated machines. It will begin in a Local Area Network (LAN) setting and will then be upgraded into a Wide Area Network (WAN) setting which includes the internet. A number of computers were already placed near the library entrance ready to be used in a matter of time from now.

According to Ms. Agnes Cahanap, the head librarian, the card catalogues in alphabetical listing of items are still going to be utilized as back up copies during emergency cases such as brown-outs or power shortages. She added that, bar-coding has been proposed, to replace the bulky borrower's card. The barcode which will be incorporated in the student I.D. will become the sole medium to access the school archives. These changes are expected to take place early next year.

TKC Steel spending P400m to build Iligan blast furnace

(Manila Standard Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) TKC Steel Corp., the only steel-manufacturing firm listed in the stock exchange, will spend P400 million for the construction of the country's first blast furnace in its plant in Iligan.

TKC Steel, in amended registration statement filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, said the establishment of a blast furnace would double the company's steel production capacity to 600,000 metric tons per year from current output of 300,000 MT per annum.

The company will finance the project from the P2.5billion planned follow on offering scheduled this November.

Company president and chief operating officer Anthony Dizon said in a separate statement that he expected the blast furnace to be operational by the latter part of 2008.

The firm has controlling interest in Treasure Steelworks, which operates the former National Steel Corp. It produces billets, which are used as raw materials for the manufacture of reinforcing bars, small structural sections and wire products needed for general construction applications.

At present, the company relies on limited supply of local steel scraps to produce molten steel for billet production. It will be able to utilize iron ore and coal, which are abundant in Philippine soils, with the installation of the furnace. The facility will also ensure a better consistency for molten steel as well as improve cost efficiency since the mineral is projected to be cheaper than steel scrap.

The company earlier said it planned to sell up to 235 million shares, via a follow-on offering at a price range of P8 to P11.50 per share. It hopes to generte as much as to P2.7 billion in proceeds from the offering.

It has tapped First Metro Investment Corp. as financial adviser and issue manager for the offering. The follow on offering is in line with the company's move to raise additional capital to fund the expansion plans of its two subsidiaries, Treasure Steelworks and Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd, which is based in China.

The company is also planning to allot P200 million for debt repayment. The company's debt will mature in January 2008 with a fixed interest rate of 8 percent per annum.

ILIGAN MILO QUALIFYING
Torrid victory for Torred

Inquirer
Last updated 03:34am (Mla time) 10/08/2007

ILIGAN CITY -- Stripped of the title here last year due to a rule infraction, Demetrio Torred showed he deserved the victory when he topped Sunday’s elimination race of the 31st annual National Milo Marathon here.

Torred was the fastest runner here last year but was disqualified after organizers found out he ran in the 5K side event of the previous Cagayan de Oro City leg.

Unlike last year when Torred faced little opposition, he ran a tough race this time, outsprinting a five-man pack to win the men’s 21K race in one hour, 15 minutes and 23 seconds.

A close second was Jeffrey Sotto who came in 15 seconds behind. Bryan Quiamco placed third 1:16:13.

“Runners can only win once, either in the 21K or 5K, in the same season,” national race director Rudy Biscocho said, recalling Torred’s case.

“We use our biometric system to verify the 5K and 21K winners and to store their information in our database. The computer tells us when the runner has already won in another leg.”

Niecel Topia ruled the women’s 21K elimination race, one week after sister Cecille Faith ruled the Cagayan de Oro City leg.

Topia won with a time of 1:38:57. Helen Tacling (1:40:13) and Angelita Castillon (1:49:17) placed second and third, respectively.

The top three finishers in the men’s and women’s races advance to the grand finals in Metro Manila on Nov. 18.

The top finishers in the 5K side event were Mansawi Lala (16:29), Kenneth Torred (16:30) and Bernie Canillo (16:34) in the men’s division. Liza Mae Gremotea (23:02), Mary Grace Villaver (23:33) and Florence Velez (23:41) topped the distaff side.

The winners in the 3K race for kids were Jay Alon and Richie Dala in the 6-9 age group and Alexander Garcia Jr. and Mayeth Lagrimas in the 10-12 category.

Iligan City National High School won the inter-school team competition.

The country’s biggest and longest-running foot race caps its Northern Mindanao sortie on Sunday, Oct. 14, in Butuan City. With a report from Romina S. Austria

Illegal drugs and the Islamic city

By Amina Rasul

Director General Dionisio Santiago of the Philippine Drugs Enforcement Agency (PDEA) has unveiled the Philippines' new illegal drug centers: the cities of Ozamis, Iligan and Marawi. The media report that Supt. Glenn Dichosa de la Torre, PDEA director for Northern Mindanao, has surmised that the drug syndicates may be taking advantage of the area's strategic location as distribution center.

Two shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) laboratories were shut down in Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental two years ago. As for shabu trade in Lanao del Sur and the Islamic city of Marawi, I wonder how the drug trade could have prospered when Lanao del Sur has been governed by a succession of religious leaders. Modern medicine treats drug addiction as a disease. There are many Christian missions that operate drug rehabilitation centers. Islam, however, considers consumption of alcohol and addictive substances as a sin. How can Marawi be an Islamic city and be a center of illegal drug distribution?

TKC allots P400M for blast furnace facility
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
Monday, October 8, 2007

TKC Steel Corp. is allotting P400 million for the purchase of a blast furnace facility for its steel production operations in Iligan City.

In a recent filing with securities regulators, TKC said the blast furnace facility will be integrated into primary iron making to have an alternative source of raw materials input aside from scrap metal. This process will utilize local iron ore and coal to extract molten iron or pig iron for conversion into steel.

TKC said the facility, once operational, would increase its billet producing capacity to 600,000 metric tons annually from the current 300,000 MT per annum.

TKC said the facility will ensure a better consistency for molten steel as well as improve cost efficiency since the mineral is projected to be cheaper than steel scrap.

TKC president and chief operating officer Anthony S. Dizon said the equipment, which the company expects to start operating by the latter part of 2008, will be financed from proceeds of its planned P2.7 billion follow on offering in November this year.

The company is selling a total of 235 million common shares at a price ranging from P8 to P11.50 per share.

Other proceeds from the additional share issue will be used for the repayment of a short-term bank loan which will mature in January 2008 (P200 million), for the expansion of Treasure Steel Corp. (P450 million to P500 million) and China-based unit Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd. (P700 million to P1.4 billion).

Treasure Steelworks operates a billet-making plant in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. The plant, formerly owned by National Steel Corp., is the largest in the Philippines with an installed capacity of 300,000 metric tons.

Zhang Zhou, on the other hand, manufactures spiral pipes and electric resistance welded pipes for general construction, water transmission, and oil and gas applications with a production capacity of 200,000 metric tons of finished pipe products per year.

TKC Steel is part of the Tiu Group of Companies that owns a wide range of businesses from financial servicing to hospitality and tourism. Among these companies include iRemit, an overseas remittance services company, Sterling Bank of Asia and the Discovery Hotel chain.

Iligan radio critic survives slay try
By Lino Dela Cruz
Tuesday, October 9, 2007

ILIGAN CITY – A hard-hitting radio commentator was shot and critically wounded yesterday morning by an unidentified man near a school here.

Police investigators identified the victim as Jose “Joe” Pantoja, in his early 40’s, and a block time radio commentator on dxLS FM “Love Radio.”

Pantoja, who was on board his motorcycle, had just dropped his daughter off at school and made a brief stop at a copying center near the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Tibanga highway to have some documents duplicated.

A gunman wearing a bonnet sneaked up from behind and shot him point blank with a .45 caliber pistol, hitting him thrice on the stomach.

The assailant fled and boarded a waiting getaway motorcycle parked nearby and driven by a bonnet-wearing cohort.

Pantoja was rushed to the nearby Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital where doctors have declared him in critical condition.

Iligan City mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz instructed Police Director Senior Superintendent Virgilio Ranes to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident.

City officials and different media groups here condemned the shooting and considered the incident as an affront to press freedom.

Police are looking into several angles in their investigation to determine the motives behind the shooting. – AFP

Survey cameras unable to identify assailants

By Richel V. Umel
Lanao Correspondent

ILIGAN CITY -- Police here said the recently installed camera system in various areas of the city have helped them spot the assailants of the political radio block timer of DXLS Love Radio, who was shot Monday.

However, since the assailants wore a ski mask, police said, it would take sometime before they would uncover the identity of the perpetrator.

Senior Superintendent Virgilio Ranes identified the victim as Jose Cagalawan Pantoja, a resident of Barangay Bagong Silang, Iligan City, and a political spokesperson of Lakas Christian-Muslim Democrats.

Surveillance camera personnel said the camera was set in a wide angle last Sunday morning to monitor a certain sports activity and the technician on duty was not able to pre-set the camera.

The monitoring camera near the Land Bank in La Salle road was able to record two riding men in ski masks but could hardly provide a close up image.

Grace Pantoja, the victim's wife, said his husband came from St. Paul Elementary School where he sent his daughter Donnabelle to school.

Pantoja was riding his motorcycle and dropped by at a Xerox copier center in a sidewalk across Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).

When Pantoja was about to leave the Xerox copier center, two unidentified gunmen shot Pantoja three times, which hit his abdomen, Mrs. Pantoja said.

Three empty shells were found in the crime scene.

One witness who requested anonymity said Pantoja managed to pull out his handgun but was unable to return fire as the victim fell down at the gutter asking for help.

Witness said the two gunmen wearing ski masks withdrew towards San Miguel Street riding a dark blue and dark green color combination of a motorcycle.

Bystanders brought Pantoja to a nearby Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital in Tibanaga Highway for treatment while his motorcycle and his firearm were brought to Police Station 1 for safekeeping and investigation.

Head nurse Joy Alemar, who assisted in the operating room, said as of 10:50 a.m. the attending physicians led by Dr. Abner dela Cruz are still trying to stop the bleeding.

Special Weapons and Tactics (Swat) teams were assigned to guard the operating room while the surgery is ongoing.

Dave Ditucalan, political officer of Congressman Abdullah Dimaporo and former governor Imelda Quibranza Dimaporo, said they are leaving it to the police authorities to solve the incident.

Ditucalan said Pantoja has been receiving death threats since he served as political party spokesperson.

The Lanao Press and Radio TV Club, local media practitioners in Iligan, and Cagayan de Oro Press Club strongly voiced their condemnation of the incident.

The police authorities are still gathering evidences that may lead to the immediate solution of the crime.

The last radioman shot dead in the 80s was commentator Charlie Aberilla. He was gunned down by five unidentified gunmen while inside the radio booth hosting his public affairs program "Charlie and Jimmy."

Auditions for Mindanao Musical

AUDITIONS
Ranaw: Isang Alamat
1985 CCP Playwriting Award

When Ranaw: Isang Alamat first toured the country in 1987 and 1988, the national prominence of the then 10-year old Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG) as a major performing arts company was cemented. IPAG, celebrating its Pearl Anniversary this year, reinvents this dance-musical that has received wide acclaim in its extensive road tours.

The remount needs:

Males Leads
Can look between 21-24 years old. Medium built and height, muscular. Can sing and move/dance

Female Leads
Can look 16 - 18 years old, can sing and dance, slim and light

Supporting Males
Can look 40-60. Can act; singing and dancing not required

Supporting Females
Can look 40-60. Can act; singing and dancing not required

Chorus (Male and Female)
Can dance. Knowledge of martial movements (kuntao and/or kungfu and related forms) for males will be a plus. Ability to sing will also be a plus.

For singing and dancing parts:

1. sing one music number a capella, preferably any solo number from a zarzuela or a Broadway musical
2. act out a short one-minute monologue in Filipino or Cebuano
3. mimic steps from a one of our choreographer's pool captains

For non-singing and dancing parts:

1. perform a short one-minute dance vignette with or without music accompaniment (applicant provides own CD)
2. mimic dance movements led by one of our choreographer's pool captains

Expert dancing (contemporary or ethnic-adapted) will be a plus, however most lead roles will require the levels of broad gesticulations and highly energized movements (for males) and nuanced flowing gestures (for females). Because the musical will require double- and triple-roles, the ability to sing and dance will be an advantage.

No single cattle call. The Artistic Staff will be available daily starting October 8 (Mon) until October 27 (Sat) to entertain auditions at the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology Production Room of the IPAG. Callbacks start Nov. 3 (Sat). Rehearsals begin in November. Performance dates: February 7, 8, and 9 in Iligan City . Road tours follow the Iligan premiere.

Councilor Quijano supports SK reform bill
By: E. Mayormita

Councilor Hannah Quijano, Iligan City Federated SK Chairman, has the strong backing of the City Council for the resolution she sponsored in support of the Sangguniang Kabataan Reform Bill at the House of Senate instead of its abolition.

The young lady councilor expressed her sentiments over the motion to cart off the youth's representation from the barangay and city/municipal councils which has been giving them the chance to be the lawmaking bodies' partners in development.

Quijano will push for the SK Reform Bill over Senator Nene Pimentel's negative remarks regarding its merits. She stresses particularly on the need to move up the age requirement from 15-17 to 18-21 to make the representatives more suited for signing of contracts and other tasks and procedures in the local lawmaking body.

Mayor launches Iligan City's Consumer Welfare Month

Iligan City (11 October) -- No less than the city's chief executive, Mayor Lawrence Cruz, launched the Consumer Welfare Month celebration during the city government employees' flag-raising ceremony on October 1, 2007 at the Anahaw Amphitheater, City Hall, Iligan City.

Under the theme "Education and Information: Key to Consumer empowerment," the celebration was spearheaded by the Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) of Iligan City whose members include city government offices as well as national government agencies and non-governmental organizations (NGO). The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) acts as the LPCC's secretariat.

As chairperson of the LPCC-Iligan City, Cruz enjoined everyone to be vigilant consumers all the time. The creation of LPCC had been a tool in its advocacy focusing on consumer rights and responsibilities, and looking into the regulation of activities of the retailers and manufacturers in our city, Cruz said.

For her part, DTI-10 Assistant Regional Director and LPCC Vice chairperson Linda Boniao briefed city hall employees on the rationale of the annual consumer month celebration. She said that the celebration aims to advocate for consumerism and consumer welfare, as well as to instill quality consciousness in consumers' choice of products and services.

The month-long celebration will run from October 1 to 30. Its activities will focus primarily on consumer education and information to support the celebration's theme. (PIA-Iligan)

LPCC embarks on massive consumer info, education drive

(11 October) -- The Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) of Iligan City has embarked on massive consumer education and information campaigns in celebration of Consumer Welfare Month (CWM), said Linda O. Boniao, Provincial Director, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Lanao del Norte / Iligan City.

Boniao added that the LPCC not only looks into the regulation of the activities of retailers and manufacturers, but also in the promotion of consumer awareness and advocacy, focusing on consumer rights and responsibilities.

As part of the celebration of Consumer Welfare Month, LPCC has scheduled consumerism seminars in tertiary and secondary schools. Students from St. Laurence Institute of Technology and Iligan Computer Institute, this city, were the first recipients of the said seminar, which was held October 3 and 4.

"The significant role of the academe, particularly the students who will eventually become active players in society, is taken into consideration. We believe that empowering students will mold them to become avid advocates of consumerism," said Boniao.

The LPCC will also conduct the 3rd LPCC Quiz Bee in coordination with the Department of Education (DepEd) on October 19. The quiz show will be participated by 4th year high schools students from the public and private high schools in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte. Cash prizes will be given to the winners, and they will also represent the province in the Regional Quiz Bee in Cagayan de Oro City. (PIA-Iligan)

Internet café operators consolidating in Mindanao
Written by Walter I. Balane

(MindaNews/10 Oct) -- Internet café owners are forming a Mindanao-wide association to unite and to address their issues collectively, an official of the Internet Cafe Association of Davao City (ICAD) said.

At least five local internet associations in Mindanao have signified intention to attend the 6th Mindanao ICT Congress this month where the Internet Associations in Mindanao Summit is a side event.

He cited that associations in the cities of Iligan, Midsayap, Tagum, Digos, Davao and the province of Compostela Valley have confirmed attendance to the summit since last week.

The 6th MICT Congress, which would be held back-to-back with the 1st BIMP-EAGA ICT Conference, will run from Oct. 23 to 24.

Adolfo Solanor, ICAD president, told MindaNews Wednesday the forming of an island-wide group could be among the major actions to be taken when the internet café associations meet on Oct. 22.

ICAD is among the member-associations of ICT Davao, a group of Davao City's ICT stakeholders.

ICAD also has organized the e-lympics online gaming tournament from Oct. 21 to 23.

Solanor told the Club 888 press forum Wednesday internet cafés have different local issues such as stable electricity, connectivity and also internet rates.

He said cut-throat competition has brought down internet fees to as low as P5 per hour, stretching the business viability of internet cafes in Davao. In 2002, internet rental fees in Davao ranged between P30 and P50 per hour.

The city has around 450 internet cafes, which almost tripled in number since five years ago.

Solanor said the presence of wifi hotspots and broadband internet connection in residential areas have affected sales of internet cafés.

He admitted that the real winners of the low access cost are the internet users, but he said it is at the cost of the local internet access industry.

He stressed that the internet café industry are at the frontlines of the ICT industry.

'07 Milolympics, Prisaa get underway next week
Friday, October 12, 2007

THE next week days will be busy for school-based athletes as two important big events will subsequently unfold here.

Arguably the most anticipated in-school meet of the year, the 2007 Milo Little Olympics will open on October 19 at the Don Gregorio Pelaez Sports Center with a dozen number of sports disciplines out to be disputed.

"Dako kini nga competition nga gihulatan sa atong mga estudyante nga atleta sa elementary ug secondary levels kay Mindanao-wide ang scope," said event coordinator Megdonio Llamera.

Schools from as far as Gensan, Cotabato, Iligan and Bukidnon are expected to vie for the top honors in the different sporting competitions such as swimming, athletics, gymnastics, volleyball, taekwondo, chess, table tennis and lawn tennis, among others.

Various field demonstrations will highlight the two-weekend's multifarious meet on Friday's opening ceremony wherein last year's champion Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) is going to defend its cheer dance title.

The succeeding two weekends will be an exciting rivalry for Mindanao's aspiring young athletes from the private and public school institutions.

"Winning athletes will be treated like no other in Milolympics kay makadawat sila og mga special awards nga sa Nestle-backed event lang nila matilawan," added Llamera.

The Cagayan de Oro Private Schools Athletic Association (Prisaa) Meet will be played almost simultaneously with the Littlelympics on Oct. 23-24 at same venue.

Survivors of the Prisaa Meet will join their counterparts from Cosaa and the Public District Meet, disputing the coveted Regional Palaro berths in the so-called City Triangular Meet. (LLS)

Dunkin' Donuts has opened another outlet at the ground level of Celadon (near IMCC).

They also transferred that hut (used as temporary store during its renovation) infront of El Centro.

Speaking of donuts, is MR DONUT still serving Iligan? I've seen one outlet near Pala-o market before but it's gone now. How about the MD store near Park Avenue?

Reelectionist Iligan City mayor thanks residents for 2nd term
Written by Violeta M. Gloria / MindaNews
Tuesday, 15 May 2007 20 16 19

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/May 15)-- Banking on partial and unofficial reports of radio-based Media Election Count, reelectionist mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz called up a local radio early Tuesday morning to thank Iliganons for "reelecting me for the second term."

Cruz was originally a member of the opposition when he started his political career as councilor and when he was elected mayor in 2004. This year, he shifted political party behind the government-backed Team Unity, to run with a close relative and congressional aspirant Nikki Badelles in Lanao's 1st District. Badelles is a daughter of three-term congressman Mariano Badelles.

Nevertheless, Cruz was still considered as "guest candidate" of the Genuine Opposition (GO) party.

As of 11 a.m., the media count reported that Cruz garnered 20,850 votes against his opponents -- former city mayors Franklin Quijano (Lakas-CMD)- 6,494 and Alejo Yanez 1,746.

Oozing with confidence, Cruz also expressed gratitude to local policemen for "pre-emptive and 24-hour security measures before and on actual election day."

"They have done an overnight patrol in all barangays of the city," he said.

He also thanked his political rivals "for bearing the importance of peace and order."

He also announced his development agenda, promising more job opportunities to unemployed residents of the city.

"When Gaisano Mall will be done by August, other malls will be constructed here," he said.

In a 52-page Mayor's Report he distributed to select residents in Iligan prior to election, he bared his accomplishments in the past three years.

These include a P445 M-worth water system; increase of commercial investors like the five-storey Gaisano Mall; facilitation of overseas job opportunities; entry of multinational corporations in partnership with local farmers for papaya and coffee plantations; animal dispersal and livelihood assistance to poor but deserving families.

Cruz also endeavored to resolve garbage problems in Barangay Santiago. He also said he increased the capability of policemen for security by providing them incentives, trainings and vehicles.

Here's an old article:

Iligan mayor glad over GMA's nod on road project

Written by Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews
Monday, 30 July 2007

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/29 July) – City Mayor Lawrence Cruz said he was a bit stupefied although elated when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo mentioned in her State of the Nation Address that she has instructed the Department of Public Works and Highways to build the Iligan Circumferential Road. Cruz told radio station dxLS that the project is a network of roads that will connect three remote barangays of the city "and will invite investments for commerce and construction of villages."
He said, however, that (the project) still needs constant follow-ups to place it on the priority budgetary allocation of the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).

The mayor noted that despite the administration’s electoral debacle in Iligan where most of her senatorial candidates lose “she still gives importance to her native city which shows she isn't a lame duck.”

"We are a city on the rise," he said.

Cruz also announced that aside from the ongoing construction of Gaisano Mall here two more mall operators are eyeing sites for their own establishments.

This for him signals job opportunities for unemployed residents of the city.

Cruz admitted, however, that the city government is still facing problems like inadequate potable water supply for residential areas and lack of garbage disposal facilities. (Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews)

Sabi ng source ko the "two malls" mentioned here are LKK and SM. Nalaman ko rin sa kanya na may pangatlong mall operator na papasok. Uncle kasi nya ang VP.
