NorMin tourists arrival increase
Sunday, October 14 2007 @ 04:23 PM BST

Tourism
The tourists arrival in Northern Mindanao have increased by 679,901 in the first six months of the year.

A total of 874,136 tourists arrived during the period compared to last year's 194,235.

Catalino Chan III, Department of Tourism-10 regional director, said the increase can be attributed to the consistent peace and order situation of the region.

Chan said more travel opportunities also were available due to the various travel fairs and festivals.

Misamis Occidental registered the highest arrivals at 526,367 ourists followed by Cagayan de Oro-Misamis Oriental with 150,903 visitors; then Camiguin with 130,529 tourists.

Iligan-Lanao del Norte had 48,330 visitors and Bukidnon with 18,007 tourists.

Chan said there was an increase of awareness among the locals of the tourism destinations in the country.

Aside from leisure trips, Region 10 became the country's favorite convention destination with a total of 2,274 events being held compared to the 1,083 events in the same period of last year.

The events attracted 137,571 delegates compared to last year's 102,255.

Still Cagayan de Oro has the largest share of convention by 70 percent with a hotel occupancy rate of 138 percent.

Chan said as time goes by, the region's capital city had more facilities and amenities to host big conventions.

This was the main reason more and more are coming with an added value of cheaper rates and more tourist attractions.

He said in the next few years, Cagayan de Oro will be the convention capital of Southern Philippines.

Taste of a good venture
By the GO NEGOSYO team
Monday, October 15, 2007

The inclination of Kagayanons for good food is inspired by basic food treats, like Cheding’s Peanuts for starter snacks or popular dips like Suka Pinakurat.

But these successful enterprises, like many others, had arduous beginnings.

Stuart del Rosario, the man behind Suka Pinakurat, initially had a restaurant and a lechon manok business, but these ventures failed, resulting in financial problems.

His financial crisis was compounded by health problems as he underwent a heart bypass operation in 2000. As a result, he had to put up all his possessions for sale to support his medical needs.

After recuperating from the operation, Del Rosario found himself greatly inspired to venture into something that he has always been good at - making dips or sauces.

He had previously been concocting various sauces for Iligan’s most popular dishes as his pastime, but this time around, Del Rosario decided to make vinegar-based dipping sauces for profit. Armed with P28,000 as initial fund, Del Rosario devised a whole new product that he felt would beat all other sauces in their town.

He started his innovation with an Iligan specialty called “pinakurat,” which is made from wild boar meat. He immersed it in a boiling coconut vinegar (or sukang tuba) then mixed it with herbs and spices. Sukang Pinakurat coincidentally launched the commercial value of coconut nectar sap or tuba.

Although at first it was hard to sell a virtually unknown product, Del Rosario’s Suka Pinakurat eventually caught the attention of big retailers that have operations in Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Cebu. Suka Pinakurat even made its way to most Visayas and Mindanao regions that direct buyers and distributors took advantage of the product’s marketability.

The increasing demand for Suka Pinakurat forced Del Rosario to increase his volume of raw materials and suppliers. Sukang Tuba is purchased directly from coconut sap farmers, locally known as the mananguetes, who are considered the poorest farmers because they only depend on sari-sari stores and local markets. When Del Rosario decided to increase their produce, these former less-than-P100-earner mananguetes now earn roughly four to five thousand pesos per week.

Del Rosario also managed to have his 40 mananguetes maintain 50 coconut trees from the initial five to seven trees. He was also able to provide livelihood to the women of their barangay by helping in their daily production.

“Success is neither measured by the material things I could now buy nor the comfort that I enjoy,” Del Rosario said. “It is the benevolent feeling that through entrepreneurship, I have instilled life’s significance to the society by doing business with a heart.”

Indeed, a pinch of love in business always does wonders, like how it also was with Isidra “Cheding” Tan.

Cheding acquired Cheding’s Peanuts from her parents-in-law Ramon Tan Chingto and Lim Kim Tua, who left Amoy, China to start a candle and peanuts business in Iligan in the early 1930s.

Starting up with P36.00 as capital and six sacks of peanuts and candles, the formidable husband-wife team managed to grow their business to what became Cheding’s bread and butter several decades later.

In the beginning, Cheding and her family would wake up at the wee hours of the morning, and prepare and cook the toasted peanuts together. Then they would package it in small paper packs and sell them for five centavos and P2.50 for 100 packs at Iligan’s various movie houses.

Today, Cheding’s Peanuts has 20 employees who help in making the business operations a success. Oftentimes, Cheding would personally take charge of mixing salt, water and peanuts and would oversee the toasting process. Cheding is still hands on with the business as the quality control manager.

Her two sons and a daughter-in-law have been given the task of running the business for distribution and shipping, production and operation, and general marketing and promotions, respectively.

“I believe that hard work, perseverance and genuine care for its employees and the community have made Cheding’s Peanuts worth the bite,” Cheding said.

Because of their exceptional contribution to Cagayan de Oro’s entrepreneurial revolution, Del Rosario and Tan will be hailed by Presidential Consultant for Entrepreneurship Jose Concepcion III as one of the Most Inspiring CDO Entrepreneurs, an award given by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship as part of the Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro slated on Oct. 19 at the Atrium, Limketkai Center.

Go Negosyo sa CDO is part of PCE’s latest campaign, the Go Negosyo Caravan, which aims to bring Go Negosyo forum and expositions in key cities in the country. The Caravan has already visited Cebu, Bacolod, Baguio, Manila, and Pampanga.

Go Negosyo sa Cagayan de Oro is presented by the Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship in partnership with the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Major partners include Pagcor, Globe, Hyundai, San Miguel Corp., Splash Corp., STEAG State Power Inc., Limketkai Sons Inc., Unilever, PLDT, Smart, RFM Corp., Concepcion Durables Inc. and Entrepreneurs School of Asia. Confirm na ang locations of the 2 malls...

1. LKK Mall - Lot fronting PhilAmLife to Kuzina Iliganon
2. SM Mall - Brgy. Kiwalan (2 kms from the highway, overlooking the bay). 6.4 has.

^^ Re SM No idea kung bakit dyan ang location.

3. Ongoing pa ang talks with the 3rd mall operator

wow pre, ang layo niyan sa highway and the road after 1 km is a rough road...ive been there before and the road is too narrow...i wonder why SM would put a mall there perhaps they can still find some other lots or are they going to build a resort-hotel?

Mayor Cruz confers with SP on Proposed 2008 Budget
Monday, 15 October 2007
M. Anggot. City Information Office

In his message during the flag raising program on Monday at Anahaw Amphitheatre, Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz personally invited members of the City Council to attend to an executive-legislative caucus that is scheduled 8:30 in the morning today, in his office.

The local chief executive hinted that the main point of discussion will be on the 2008 Proposed Annual Budget which he also announced that he will submit to the sangguniang panlungsod before 5:00 p.m. yesterday, as required in section 318 of the Local Government Code.

Mayor Cruz said that he wishes to iron-out items of the executive budget for 2008 with SP before a budget hearing is held on the later part of this year.

After the program, Mayor Cruz also called the 22 department heads of the local government in a meeting to finalize their respective estimates of income and expenditures and the total appropriations covering the current operating expenditures and capital outlays, as well as their proposed department budget which they already forwarded earlier in July this year.

The above-mentioned documents are important parts of a local government budget.

Congressman Vicente "Varf" Belmonte, Jr. yesterday confirmed to pursue plans of making Iligan City a lone district, to get an exclusive seat in the House of Representatives.

During the flag-raising program of the local government employees, Belmonte disclosed that he will make use of the time before congress resumes session on November 4, in conducting researches and consultations in 44 barangays of the city.

The move is strongly supported by Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz believing that this is very timely considering that Iligan now meets the 250,000 population requirement to have a separate representation in congress.

The former local councilor turned national legislator also vows to continue projects started by his predecessor, former Congressman Tikbong Badelles especially the scholarship program for the poor but deserving students.

In addition, he also committed to back-up several water improvement projects implemented by the Cruz administration through the Iligan City Waterworks Systems Office using his infrastructure funds.

Belmonte also announced that he now holds memberships of six committees in the lower house, such as: Energy, Public Works and Highways, Foreign Affairs, Games and Amusement, Suffrage and Electoral Reforms, National Defense and Security, and the Oversight Committee.

ACM ICPC Philippines : 200 participants. 50 Teams. 24 Schools. 6 Problems. 3 Hours. 1 Champion.

The heat is on.

Fifty teams from 24 schools are vying for the top spot in the First Philippine National Inter-Collegiate Programming Competition (ACM ICPC Philippines 2007) to be held on Saturday, October 20, 2007 at De La Salle University – Canlubang Campus in Laguna.

This event is being organized by the Computing Society of the Philippines (CSP) in cooperation with the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). The contest director is Dr. Rafael Saldaña, immediate past president of the CSP and ACM ICPC Asia-Manila Site director.
Each competing team consists of 3 students. During the contest, each team contestant will try to outsmart each other by solving 6 problems in 3 hours using a computer. The team with the most number of problems solved at the fastest time wins the competition.
The problems will range from “easy” to “difficult” and will include computer science topics such as data structures, combinatorics, graph algorithms, and computational methods.
The top spots at stake are: First Place (Champion), 2nd Place, and 3rd Place. The top team (or teams) will be given financial assistance to participate in the 2007 ACM ICPC Asia-Singapore regional contest on December 12-13, 2007. In the Singapore Contest, the top teams (usually 3) will qualify to the 2008 ACM ICPC World Finals.

^^ I believe that's a mistake, try to clear your cache on browser and redo the test, or try www.speedtest.net for sure, ADSL 2+ is only upto 24 mbps, if your cable then docsis 2 is about 40mbps, not unless if you are connected via fiber optics :)

Yes. i did almost everything to prove that speed test result is wrong.... cleared my cache, rebooted my broadband modem and PC, used various speedtests websites - speedtest.net, globequest.com.ph etc. Not similar results but the average speed is near that screenie i posted.
Tried also downloading huge files on the net ranging from 700mb to 1gb and I cant really believe it my downloads finished in a very short span of time...

This is really crazy. Really weird but really happening.

As far as i know, PLDT is still not finished reconfiguring their servers.

My net speed is supposed to be only 5mbps....

$1.6-billion investment for steel mill in Iligan

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo got one of the biggest investments worth $1.6-billion for the establishment of the first large steel mill in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.

In her three-day recent visit to India, the President got more than $2-billion worth of trade and investments one of which is the $1.6-billion investment from Ispat Industries Ltd. for the putting up of the large steel mill in Iligan City which is expected to generate more jobs for the people of the province.

Some Indian companies have committed to set up call centers and training facilities in Manila, Camarines Sur, Iloilo, Davao and other provinces in the country.

Agreements were also signed with the Indian government for the continuous supply of low-cost medicines into the Philippines in support of the government’s program to cut in half the price of medicines commonly bought by the poor.

A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between the Philippine International Trading Corporation and the Indian State Trading Corporation was signed for the purchase of $35-million worth of quality but affordable medicines from India.

Another MOA was signed between Panacea Biotech Ltd. of India and Family Vaccine and Specialty Clinics Inc. of the Philippines for the importation and distribution of medicines and vaccines leading to the setup of 100 additional clinics providing quality and affordable health care to at least 500,000 Filipinos. TKC to buy new blast furnaces

TKC Steel Corp. said Thursday it has completed negotiations with a firm in China for the purchase of two blast furnaces for 11.5 million Chinese renminbi (P67 million).

The equipment are expected to improve the production of iron billets by two of its operating units Treasure Steelworks Corp. in Iligan City and Zhangzhou Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd in Fujian province in China. Steel billets are used for construction materials.

"Upon installation and full operation, these facilities will increase the present installed capacity of Treasure Steelworks Corp. from 300,000 metric tons to approximately 600,000 metric tons annually," it said in a letter to the stock exchange.

Earlier, the company said it expects the blast furnaces to start operating by the fourth quarter of next year.

It will source the funds for the acquisition from the net proceeds of its planned follow-on offering in November that was estimated at a maximum of P2.7 billion.

TKC Steel will sell up to 235 million shares at a price range of P8 to P11.50 each.

First Metro Investment Corp. was tapped as financial adviser and lead underwriter for the offering.

TKC Steel is owned by the Tiu family that also holds interests in businesses in the financial and tourism sectors. - Judith Balea

Global Steel still keen on integrated production facility, says Trade dept

GLOBAL Steel Philippines Inc. (GSPI) will pursue its billion-dollar plan to put up a backward integration facility in Mindanao, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said on Wednesday.

On the sidelines of the 10th year anniversary of Ford Group Philippines, Trade Secretary Peter B. Favila told reporters that the Indian-owned company which acquired shuttered National Steel Corp. will push through with its plan to invest $1.2 billion to $1.5 billion for the new facility in its Iligan City compound.

This project will be the first of its kind in the country, Favila said, adding the expansion will allow the company to produce all kinds of steel products for quarrying and mining, enabling it to produce iron ore, which is the base material of all steel products.

Citing his discussion with Binod Mittal of the Mittal group during his recent official trip to India, Favila said that GSPI is serious about investing more in the Philippines. “But the problem with Iligan’s city council should be settled first,” the DTI chief said, referring to the dispute between the local government unit and the company on realty taxes due.

“Lalit Kumar Sehgal [managing director] of GSPI has asked the government’s intervention if this won’t be settled between [them],” Favila said.

He said, “[once] the issue on realty tax is resolved then Global [Steel] will be pursuing with its investment, that is how they relayed it to the government.”

The trade chief said Omar Bryron T. Mier, president of National Steel creditor Philippine National Bank (PNB), has assured the government that the steel firm is not suffering from financial difficulties.

“He said that [they] already renewed their standby LCs [letter of credits],” Favila, also a former PNB official, said.
Global Steel is eyeing to complete the backward integration facility project in 2010.

Early this year, GSPI executives disclosed that the company targets to double its annual sales from $201 million to $513 million by end-December. They said the Iligan City plant exports to Africa, Asia, Europe and Brazil and will eventually tap the United States market.

Tackling the GSIS Remittance Problem

There's a new group formed by Mayor Cruz to tackle the very sticky, very tedious task of reconciling the figures of GSIS and that of the City Government with regards to the questions of just how much premiums we should remit and how much we have actually remitted from 1997 onwards.

This is a problem that hits employees of the City where it hurts most: their pockets. And it's the kind of problem that makes people really furious, especially those who have retired or are about to retire, and those who would like to borrow from GSIS against the premiums deducted from their salaries, because it's something that shouldn't have happened.

The group, officially called Task Force on GSIS Premiums and Amortization Reconciliation, is headed by Mr. Rodolfo Nadayag as Chairman. Its members are Atty Rey Capistrano, Atty. Alberto de Castro, Mr. Camilo Empleo, Mr. Chito Balan, Ms. Carmelita Ledesma, Ms. Virginia Mirasol, Ms. Felicidad Dabatos, Ms. Evita Buligan, Ms. Zoe Castro and Ms. Linda Sebandal. I know Rudy to be an intelligent problem-solver. He is also satisfied with the group's composition and he is confident of their all-out support.

Rudy thinks the problem can be solved by the end of this year. Let's give the group our all-out support and our prayers.

Update on the Solid Waste Management Project

Over at the Solid Waste Management Project, the principal component of which is the Material Recovery Facility at Bgy. Bonbonon, the pace has also significantly picked up after a fitful start. All the documents needed to start the procurement process are now ready. And it will not be long now when the BAC will call for a pre-procurement conference.

The MRF is targeted for completion on August 2008. Engr. Jun Quitos is at the helm of the SWM Project.

Update on the Water Improvement Project

Things are moving fast now in this biggest ever of all City projects, past and present. If you don't know yet, Mayor Cruz had created recently a Project Implementation Unit, separate from the ICWS. The PIU is headed by former Councilor Engr. Bill Bacareza. Bill is eminently qualified for this job, having handled similar big construction projects when he was still a senior manager at the National Steel Corporation. He was also Chair of the Committee on Water when he was still a Councilor. Other key people making up the project management are Engr. Josephus Albao as Assistant Project Manager, Engr. Jaime Sato as Planning and Engineering Division Chief and Engr. Merlito Catolico as Administrative Manager.

The procurement process is expected to commence by November of this year. PIIU is confident they will finish the entire P495M project by September 20, 2009.

10 NorMin traders cited in 'Go Negosyo' caravan
By Danilo V. Adorador III

TEN outstanding businessmen from Northern Mindanao were recognized Friday during the Go-Negosyo Conference, where some of the country's leading business mentors exhorted locals to be entrepreneurs.

Go Negosyo's Cagayan de Oro-league brought the team's entrepreneurial mentoring program to the region, providing micro, small and medium businessmen--and even students--relevant knowledge on entrepreneurship.

Jose Concepcion III, presidential adviser on entrepreneurship and chairman and CEO of RFM Corp., said the Go Negosyo program aims to "foster a culture of enterprise" by increasing public awareness on entrepreneurship and opening to them the financial support system to fund their ventures--no matter how small.

"We're not saying that being a paid employee is bad. We're telling Filipinos to try entrepreneurship, try the business side," said Concepcion, founder of the Philippine for Entrepreneurship (PCE), where GO Negosyo was conceived.

Fostering entrepreneurial spirit, Concepcion said, also means bringing the success stories of local businessmen who "promote innovation" and "best business practices" that budding entrepreneurs can immolate.

Along that line, Go Negosyo recognized 10 "inspiring entrepreneurs" in the local scene in an awarding ceremony that also capped the three-day Oro Best Expo.

Cerge Remonde, Presidential Management Staff chief, attended the ceremony in behalf of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Oro Best Expo, organized by the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, Inc. (Oro Chamber), brought together local and American companies in business clinic sessions for budding entrepreneurs.

Recipients of the Inspiring Entrepreneurs Award are: Media mogul Henry Canoy of the Radio Mindanao Network (RMN), Alonzo Chiong of the Oro Asian Automotive, Eleanor Jose of the locally popular pastel Vjandeep, Alfonso Lim of Limketkai and Sons, Mercedes Meja of food giant SLERS, cable king Elpidio Paras of Parasat, Reynaldo Rafisura of Salay Handmade Paper Industries, Iligan -based vinegar king Rene Stuart del Rosario who is the maker of Sukang Pinakurat, peanut queen Isidra Tan of Cheding's Peanut and Henrik Kelly Yu of fastfood chain Bigby's.

Quote from a blogger.

I went to Torquise. It is a Turkish restaurant in SM, the first and only in the Philippines, and the 2nd one just opened at 10:30 in SM-Davao City. I made friends with the head manager, Stephanie, and she mentioned that when Gaisano Mall here in my hometown will open, they also plan to make the 3rd branch. It was a healthy place to eat compared to the famous fastfoods around the mall. Steph treated me to a pure turkish made yogurt and really — it tastes so original. I really dunno what’s original but I think that was that because I have tasted commercially sold yogurt in China and Bangkok — which I also love. But the one I tasted today was so pure and the sourness was so creamy and thick. I love it!

TKC Steel to raise P2.62 billion from planned follow on offering

The Securities and Exchange Commission has approved the application of listed TKC Steel Corp. to register 235 million common shares to be sold by way of a follow-on offering.

TKC Steel, which manufactures and distributes steel products, will be selling shares for P8 to P11.50. The firm expects to raise net proceeds of up to P2.62 billion.

It has tapped First Metro Investment Corp. as financial adviser, issue manager and lead underwriter for the follow-on offering that will increase public ownership to 25%.

Out of the P2.62 billion, TKC Steel will use P50 million to P100 million for its working capital for the fourth quarter and P200 million for repayment of debt for short-term bank loans to partially finance the ongoing development.

The debt will mature in Jan. 2008 with a fixed interest rate of 8% per annum.

The company has also allotted P850 million to P900 million for its subsidiary, Iligan-based Treasure Steelworks Corp.’s capital expenditure program for 2008.

Meanwhile, another subsidiary, China-based steel manufacturer ZZ Stronghold Steelworks will need P500 million in the third quarter next year wherein it will spend P150 million to acquire and install a stretch reducer mill to convert welded pipes to seamless pipes by applying heat and force to reduce the wall thickness of the welded pipes to pre-specified thickness. Some P50 million to P100 million will be used to meet the expected increase in operating costs due to a higher volume of production. In the third quarter of 2009, it will spend P1.43 billion for seamless pipe mill, working capital among others.

The company added that should its follow on offering fail, it stood ready to fund its capital expenditure program through internal funds. "The company is prepared to source additional funding from internally generated funds and borrowings, in case the proceeds from the follow-on offering fall before its maximum price," TKC Steel said. — Ruby Anne M. Rubio

I think MSU-IIT cooperative is one of the biggest cooperatives in the city.

not only in the city, it is the biggest in Mindanao and the country as well. It is big because its net assets in 2003 already amounted to 130 million which is equal to the other biggest cooperative which is in Cebu.

It is so big that the IIT COOP is only operating in Iligan City. Now they have a branch in Lanao del Norte. So far, they are the biggest cooperative in the country in terms of assets. Right now, MSU IIT COOP is already at 150 million level and is projecting to expand to the whole Mindanao.

PGMC is doing good together with their Manticao plant. Do consider also the upcoming Gmall and the soon LKK, etc. Talagang nakakalula. Truly, Ilgan is recommencing its prime.

ASSET GROWTH

It took us 8 years to build up our first million peso assets; 24 years to hit the P100 Million mark. It took us only 4 years after the first 100 Million mark to reach the P200 million assets (2002- 2006). It was in 2002 that the General Assembly passed a resolution to open the coop to the community. From the figures above, our assets is expected to reach the P300 Million mark by June 2008 or in a year’s time. To reach 500 Million by 2010 is a realistic goal.

The building is the Turning Torso recently completed in Malmo of Sweden. The building, 189 meter in height, was designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava. It has nine strata, which consist of five stories each, and 152 units. Each stratum rotates somewhat so that the whole building turns 90 degrees. The lowest two strata of the buildings are offices with the other seven containing 150 luxurious residential units. Together the building totals 150,000 square meters. Santiago Calatrava said the design of the building was inspired by a sculpture of a turning human torso.

When I said "when it rains, it pours" this morning, naging literal ang nangyari. Late this afternoon, bumuhos ang napakalakas na ulan na naging sanhi ng pagbaha sa halos lahat ng mga kalye. The heavy rain even caused power interruption in some areas.

Carrera Habagat blasts off today in Surigao

ALL is set for this year’s edition of the Carrera Habagat 2007 Siargao Bucas Grande, which starts today at the Surigao City hall.

Fourteen teams will be getting a taste of the four-day non-stop adventure racing that has become known all over Asia for being one of the toughest adventure races there is.

Set to lead the carnage is Team Kalit, which is now divided into two groups—Pepsi Kalit and Plantation Bay Kalit.

Team Kalit, last year’s winner, finished the four-day race in just two days, after opting to continue to race, while all the others were resting during the nights.

Another team to watch out for is Iligan Pride Gazul, who had been one of the strongest challengers of the race and TNF Avaya. Also providing attraction is the team of mountain racer Merlita Arias, who teams up with foreign nationals in this new endeavor.

Other teams include Davao, Ibaan, Iligan, Iloilo, Conquer, Bayantel, Nomad 420, Dumaguete, Simon, Blood Red, Katilingban Ilonggo Kalinga Kalikasan Mountaineers Inc., TNF, KIKKM and UTA among others.

Skills

Racers’ abilities to navigate will be put to test as they have to find their way around the two islands known as the surfing capital of the country.

As the organizers said, one of their purposes for holding such event is to showcase unheralded islands in the country that pose great potential for tourism, thus the decision to include Bucas Grande, an islet off Surigao, which reportedly bears a striking resemblance to the Rock Islands of Palau.

Aside from navigating, racers will need their expertise in rope handling, trekking, mountain biking, swimming, orienteering and paddling. They also need to get past all 40 control points plotted all over the race course before making it to the finish line.

The race will have its cutoff on Friday, which will be capped by the awarding ceremonies at the Cabuntog, General Luna. (MCB)

Iligan City holds forum on peaceful polls

Cagayan de Oro City (23 October) -- A Forum for a Peaceful and Orderly Barangay Election was conducted recently at the Sangguniang Panglunsod Session Hall, Iligan City.

The Forum was a joint effort of the city local government, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), the Philippine National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines-Philippine Army, and the Commission on Election (COMELEC).

City Director Jane Javier-Docallos of DILG Iligan said the Forum aimed to ensure a peaceful and orderly Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections come October 29, 2007.

We have identified seven (7) hinterland barangays, namely Dulag, Kalilangan, Lanipao, Mandulog, Panorogangan, Rogongon and Upper Hinaplanon, which we believe need special attention, said Docallos.

In attendance were sixteen (16) candidates vying for punong barangay as well as 115 for barangay kagawad hopefuls.

Highlighting the activity was the Signing of a Covenant of Peace by the concerned candidates. The Covenant states that the candidates do pledge to the Almighty, the Government of the Republic of the Philippines, and to the constituents of their respective barangays, to seek to serve and abide the lawful guidelines laid down by the duly constituted authorities in the pursuit of a clean, honest, peaceful and orderly election. Further, the candidates shall not employ force, violence and intimidation in seeking the mandate of the voting public and render obeisance to the rule of law and respect the sanctity of the ballots.

Meanwhile, Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz called on each candidate and their supporters to observe the rule of law during the election.

"At all costs, let us preserve the image of our city being a place with peaceful and loving citizens, this is so, to attract investors to engage in a project that will boost the economy of our city," Cruz said.

Dimasirang Tomas, election assistant of Comelec Iligan cited the Comelec Resolutions as to the conduct of the campaign period and on the election day.

PSupt. Ferdinand Bartolome, PNP Iligan, discussed the implementation of the gun ban and other security measures as defined in the Comelec Resolutions, while Lt. Col.Royme Tamparong, executive officer, 103rd Brigade, Philippine Army, said they will be augmenting security to the PNP as provided for in the Comelec Resolutions.

The city also invited Atty. Saidali Gandambra, president, Cabaro Islamic Association, Inc., to discuss on some insights of the Shari'a Law. (PIA Iligan)

Capillas: 'Big Brother is watching'
By Stephen Capillas
Galley Proof

THE use of closed circuit TV as a security measure may yet prove to be a most invaluable instrument in helping prevent the incidence of crimes in the country even with the possible outpouring of opposition to its implementation by rights groups.

One example of this is the use of closed circuit TV on the Glorietta mall explosion in which police investigators did come out with the theory that the cause may not be exactly a terrorist attack but an industrial accident.

According to a TV report, the police found that the gas tanks used in part of the mall that got hit by the explosion was not cylindrical as used commercially and in households and may have overheated easily, causing the blast.

Okay, so closed circuit TV has been in existence for sometime and is even installed in restrooms in malls despite the protests of consumer groups who said this is tantamount to invasion of privacy.

But then again, with the mass use of closed circuit TV especially here in Cagayan de Oro, criminals may think more than twice to victimize commercial establishments in the city which still have to install their own camera system.

In Iligan City, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo inaugurated a mass based closed circuit and surveillance camera system that later proved instrumental in spotting the assailants of political blocktimer Jose Pantoja.

Granted that the assailants were covered with ski masks and thus were not easily identifiable at first at least it gave the Iligan city police the leads it needed to pursue the suspects who are said to have given surrender feelers to them.

Still, with the Human Security Act and leftist militant groups howling over what they claim are draconian provisions aimed at curtailing the rights of individuals, the use of such a closed circuit TV and surveillance system may not be easily feasible, aside from a financial standpoint.

In fact the subject of closed circuit TV and surveillance system epitomized the so-called "Big Brother" security network that haunted the political thriller novels and movies like "V for Vendetta."

But with crime and terrorism on the rise, people may want to consider their position and do what Iligan City did as part of their intensified campaign against crime and terrorism.

The silent majority supports HSA... security cams, National IDs, they're good for us.... sila lang ayaw and they always think negative things. if there's any flaw, well, nobody's perfect. Aren't you gonna buy a car if you always think you're gonna be in an accident? --Hell, No! Aren't you gonna buy a cellphone if you're thinking it would be snatched? --Hell, No! Aren't you gonna do some business if you're already thinking of failure? --Hell, No! Is this a 2nd Dunkin Donut stand alone in Iligan? ^^ It seems bigger than CDO's dunkin Donut in Divisoria if I'm not mistaken.

Dunkin Donut Iligan is pretty much bigger for a donut store, actually. It's interior is also much well designed... Perhaps due to the lack of fastfood stores in Iligan, Dunkin Donut Iligan owner saw it an advantage to make it's Iligan outlet appear like any of those fastfood chains that sell burgers and friend chicken.

Look at this http://web-japan.org/nipponia/nipponia17/en/topic/index.html
How I wish some private entrepreneur(s) would put up public toilets like these all over the city on some Build-Operate-Transfer, or Build-Operate-Own, or some other scheme.
City government can provide the water, power and connection to the sewage system while the private company can build the structure.
Such facilities can be free or pay-per-use and manned by personnel who will ensure its cleanliness and sanitation. These can even become tourist attractions by themselves!

40th MSU-IIT CHARTER ANNIVERSARY & ALUMNI GRAND REUNION ON JULY 12, 2008

The Engineering Technology International Alumni Association as the Lead Convenor in cooperation with the Association of IIT Alumni Foundation, Incorporated (AIITAFI) is embarking a historic college alumni event since its founding 40 years ago - the holding of the 40th Charter Anniversary of MSU-IIT and the Forever IITians International Alumni Grand Reunion on July 12, 2008 (Saturday) at the MSU-IIT Campus. We are expecting hundreds of alumni representing the different chapters from the different industries, schools and business establishments in Iligan, key places in the country and those alumni coming from other countries. Being an alumni of the Iligan Institute of Technology community is all about making contacts, new friends and business connections along with enjoying the prestige that comes with having completed their studies at one of Southern Philippines leading academic institutions.

The organizers would like to invite all MSU-IIT alumni to be part of this historic event. The registration is just only Php200.00 which covers the following: the Department Alumni Gathering/the College/School Alumni Gathering, the Alumni Night and the Alumni Awards with Live Band Party at the MSU-IIT Gym, performances from the world-renowned cultural groups, and a lot of surprises. There will also be a lot of activities for the alumni during this week to include Alumni exhibit, optional educational tours, open house and a lot more.

OUR DEAR IITIANS, PLEASE COME HOME AND CELEBRATE RUBY ANNIVERSARY WITH US!
For more details, you can email us forever_iitalumni@yahoo.com, jcdarwinm@yahoo.com or you can contact the SET Directors Office at (063) 2232349 or the AIITAFI Office at (063) 2214599.

PLEASE INFORM ALL IITIANS!
