BobNewYorkUSA November 18th, 2007, 01:44 PM Although I have never been to the Philippines, it was quite by accident while websurfing that I came across Iligan City and decided to take a closer look at it, or as close as I could via the web. After reading many pages of text information, viewing hundreds of pictures and many enjoyable hours of video people from Iligan have put up on the web, I have become quite familiar with Iligan City. I have enjoyed some nice web chats with those that live there and have plans to visit Iligan City someday. I would like to thank all of those here who have taken and put up pictures of Iligan which I have spent many hours of enjoyable viewing. While websurfing Iligan one day a song came on the radio and my mind drifted into adapting the lyrics of the song to things I have learned about Iligan. Bear in mind that these lyrics are by someone who is half way around the earth from Iligan, who has never been there ( yet ) . These lyrics are adapted from the song " Old Cape Cod " which was a hit for Patti Page in the 1950's and Jerry Vale came out with a version of it about 15 years later. If you are not familiar with the song I am sure any number of appropriate websites will enable you to listen to it so you can see how easily my lyrics about Iligan adapt to the music. I can safely answer that yes. :) My basis was, aside from Iliganons people from Marawi, Lano del Norte, and parts of Misamis Oriental (Lugait, Manticao, etc.) sa Iligan man mangompra how much more kung naa na dagko nga malls. :) g0Rs November 18th, 2007, 02:18 PM hahaha di naman siguro "very huge malls". Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz declared the suspension of classes both pubic and private schools here. The city proper was swamped by the floods which was also fed by the overflowing Tubod and Mandulog rivers, Mayor Cruz told GMA News in a phone interview. The Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council (ICDCC) will be convened today to initiate immediate actions in response to the flooding. Armando Edroso, team leader of the disaster Coordinating Center said, they have been mobilizing since last night to monitor the situation in 44 barangays (villages), specially in the hinterlands. Edroso said a huge mudflow had blocked portions of Barangay San Roque and that heavy equipment were sent to clear the area. He also said that floodwaters have swamped the barangay Dalipuga highway enroute to Cagayan de Oro City. 2 missing? No casualties have been officially reported in iligan City as of 8:50 a.m. but unconfirmed reports reaching the City hall communication center that two children were missing at sitio Malindawag in barangay Abuno which was swamped by flood and that the hinterland road was blocked by landslides. The Tubod bridge, according to the same reports, has a crack and the Department of Public Works and Highways immediately closed it. Vehicles from the western and eastern side of the city are being rerouted to pass the lone entrance and exit using Tambacan bridge. - GMANews.TV Source (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/69198/Floods-swamp-Iligan-City-mayor-suspends-classes) g0Rs November 19th, 2007, 07:19 AM Finally sunlight! Vicente “Varf” Belmonte has two pending bills in Congress: the separation of Iligan City into a lone district and a law penalizing teachers who refuses to admit students for failure to pay school contributions and or examinations payments Belmonte, in an interview with DxIC, said it is his desire to Iligan City a lone district, a promise he has made to Iliganons ever since he ran as congressman last May. If approved, Iligan will become a separate district, along with Linamon, Kauswagan, Bacolod, Maigo, Kolambugan, Tubod and Baroy. For his second bill, Belmonte said he is acting on behalf of the complaints from parents about abusive teachers to refusr to admit students for failure to pay contributions. The congressman likewise belied reports he was suspended. Reports have circulated that a status quo was issued by the Supreme Court and that his opponent, Gov. Imelda Dimaporo has secured a Temporary Restraining Order regarding his proclamation. “I am proclaimed congressman and is already in the roster of Congress,” he said. No idea. Zero visibility daw sa Lumbia Airport Farirah November 19th, 2007, 12:02 PM I beg to differ. The very reason why Iliganons, or many of them, have to go to CdO for malling/shopping was because there's NO mall in Iligan, while CdO has got 5 - SM, Robinsons, LKK, Gaisano and Ororama. And it's also by nature of malls that they do attract custmers from other places. Heck, even Cagayanons travel to Cebu for malling/shopping. Well, Cagayanons love to shop at Cebu because of Ayala Mall. My parents are in Cebu and so are my other relatives. Whenever I visit them, I have time to shop at Ayala. But I think it would be in an expense cost and impractical for the majority aside of Cebu's distance from CDO. CDO's 5 malls, and other huge 4 malls to come in CDO few years from now are already enough . So only few. Perhaps the richer ones love to shop frequently at Ayala Center Cebu. :) Farirah November 19th, 2007, 12:15 PM lets juz see, f whose prediction about the Iligan mall's fate will be fulfilled.. I believe that the more than 400,000 population in the city alone (excluding the residents in Lanao del Norte province) can sustain a bigger mall like this Gaisano Mall Iligan and other few malls to come in Iligan sooner or later. I'm glad to see also that Maranao mall enthusiasts from Lanao del Sur have no hard time to travel to CDO just to shop in a mall. ^^ Alingatong November 19th, 2007, 01:54 PM 3 dead, 500 displaced in Iligan floods--official Agence France-Presse Last updated 02:34pm (Mla time) 11/19/2007 ILIGAN CITY, Philippines -- Three people drowned and some 500 others were displaced after heavy rain unleashed floods across this southern Philippines city, officials said Monday. The Tubod River and its tributaries overflowed their banks after three days of heavy rain, leaving parts of this city of 300,000 people under three feet (one meter) of water, said civil defense officer Armando Edrozo. Three people drowned in the city's outskirts while a man was rescued at the pier after he was carried down the Tubod early Monday, he said. He said floodwaters had displaced some 500 people and caused some cracks on a river bridge, forcing authorities to shut it down and stranding some 150 vehicles. Gloria/MindaNews Monday, 19 November 2007 ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/19 November) -- Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz has declared the city under a state of calamity following the flashfloods that dislaced 500 families and destroyed at least 20 houses and crops. Cruz and the City Disaster Coordinating Council went around the affected areas Sunday night, rescuing families and children in the heavily flooded and impassable Mahayahay village. Long-time residents said the last time the city experienced this kind of flooding was in the early 1970s. The floodwaters along the city’s main road connecting Lanao and Iligan reached above waist level. In barangay Tubod, the bridge could not be seen due to the overflow. The flood also caused traffic, stalling cars and a bus whose passengers opted to disembark and walk through the flooded streets. Elizabeth Fuentes, nursing her 5-month old baby in an evacuation center, recounted how the floodwaters reached the second floor o their house in Mahayahay. “There are 68 families in Merila here who have left their homes and stayed in a Catholic chapels for temporary refuge. We are still waiting for food and relief goods. We need the government’s and non-government assistance,” said Inday Baredo, while showing a list of evacuees. Evelyn Lomosad, a 35 year old resident of Santa Lucia in Mahayahay kept sobbing. “I have not yet seen my four children,” she said, adding, “ my neighbor said that my house was totally destroyed by flood.” Lomosad was in the market selling goods and felt helpless that the highway in Tubod and Mahayahay was impassable Monday night. “My 8 month old son who was left in our home with my three other children, has measles. I do not know where my husband is,” she cried. Boy Edroso, head of the Disaster Coordinating Council of the city, said the flood devastated the villages of Mahayahay, part of Tubod, Tipanoy, part of Palao, Ubaldo Laya, Dalipuga, Luinab, Tambacan and Pugaan. Residents of barangay Abuno also fled to safer grounds. Edroso said that evacuees are temporarily sheltered in the auditorium of Iligan City National High School, in Catholic chapels, while others fled to their relatives’ homes. “We have also rescued two young persons aged 18 and 20 years old who are still in a state of shock,” he said. “The council has already met and we have discussed that we will focus on relief operations. We are also asking those kind-hearted associations who could help us provide clothing and food for our evacuees,” Edroso said. He also added, “that as the city government has declared that we are in a state of calamity, we are supposed to fast track the disaster response.” Edroso explained that the heavy rains were caused by a low pressure area in Northern Mindanao. In Naawan and Manticao, Misamis Oriental, several houses and fishponds also suffered from the floods. “The milkfish pond in MSU-Naawan School of fisheries overflowed,” one of the residents reported. Civil society representatives have yet to meet to discuss disaster response. Some of their offices, too, were not spared. Also flooded are five non-government offices in Mahayahay, including BirthDev Inc., an institution that focuses on relief and emotional recovery response in times of disaster. As of press time, floodwaters were still rising as heavy rains continued to pour.(Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews) Source (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3311&Itemid=50) g0Rs November 19th, 2007, 05:47 PM Iligan, disaster bodies evacuate residents of flood-prone areas Iligan City (19 November) -- Early this morning, City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan has called up DepEd 10 Regional Office, Cagayan de Oro City, for the suspension of classes of the secondary and elementary level due to the continuous downpour of rain which affected the city's flood-prone areas. The city has experienced heavy rain since Saturday, November 17, 2007 until today. While students/pupils are excused from their classes, principals and teachers are required to report to their respective schools to assist in the use of the school as evacuation centers for families affected by flood, according to Schools Division Superintendent Domingo V. Samson of DepEd Iligan. Also, principals assigned at the low-lying areas are on red alert. The city mayor as chief executive has the prerogative to request for the suspension of classes from the high authority for the safety of the children, said Samson. The Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council (ICDCC), through Armando A. The Department of Public Works & Highways (DPWH) has advised that the Tubod Bridge be closed to motorists since last night because of the flood overflowing the bridge. Families affected by the flood are now at the evacuation centers - barangay auditorium, schools auditorium, barangay chapel, with the City Social Welfare & Development (CSWD), PNRC and other groups assisting the needs of the evacuees. Number of families evacuated could not be determined yet as of this time, per ICDCC report. Umel and Lino dela Cruz ILIGAN CITY -- The City Government here declared a state of calamity after rains flooded the city's 44 barangays, displacing at least 500 families. Iligan Mayor Lawrence Cruz said he coordinated with the Department of Education (DepEd) in ordering the suspension of classes in private and public schools here. Post your comments here on the Batasan blast A power outage and a cut in the city's water supply also affected several barangays. A bridge in Tubod, Lanao del Norte was closed Monday due to several cracks. Mayor Cruz said the City Council convened Monday afternoon and approved the release of five percent of the city's calamity fund. He said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo was already informed of the calamity that affected Iligan City's 44 barangays. Iligan City Waterworks System (ICWS) Manager Christine Orbe said a 16-inch pipe installed below Tubod bridge that supplies potable water to the city was cut off and would take one week to repair. In the meantime, Orbe said two trucks of the ICWS will supply potable water to affected areas. The Iligan Light and Power Co. are rushing repairs in Bara-as while the Maranaw Telephone Co.-Philippine Long Distance Telephone technical teams are repairing cables cut down by falling debris. Assistance Mayor Cruz directed the City Social Welfare and Development Office to provide assistance to 500 families in several evacuation centers. He also thanked the City Government of Cagayan de Oro for donating truckloads of rice for the affected residents, which are scheduled to arrive Tuesday. Cruz said the flooding at the city proper caused by rains the past two days caused the Tubod and Mandulog rivers to overflow and affect infrastructure. The Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council (ICDCC) said they are monitoring the situation of 44 barangays hard hit by the floods especially in the hinterlands. Armando Edroso, one of the ICDCC team leaders, said mudflow blocked portions of Barangay San Roque, prompting them to use heavy equipment to clear the area. Water also overflowed across Barangay Dalipuga at the national highway enroute to Cagayan de Oro City. Missing Two children were reported at the City Hall as missing. They were identified as Jeffrey Sistoso and Jason Fernandez. Another two unidentified persons were found drifting along Iligan Bay. They were rescued and brought a nearby hospital. As early as 7 a.m. Monday, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Northern Mindanao immediately closed the Tubod bridge due to cracks. Vehicles including provincial buses coming from Iligan City's western and eastern side were asked to use the lone entrance and exits using the Tambacan bridge, thus causing massive congestion and stranding many passengers. Elsewhere, the City Disaster Coordinating Council and Rescue 811 teams were dispatched in barangays swept by chest-deep waters like in Barangay Mahayahay. Other barangays like Dalipuga, Tambacan, Bagong Silang, San Miguel, and Tubod also got plagued by knee-deep water. A minor landslide caused a boulder to destroy the house of one Emie delos Santos, in sitio Tag-Ibo, Barangay Dalipuga. The occupants suffered bruises, according to de los Santos. Rescue 111 teams meanwhile warned residents living along the coastlines and riverbanks to evacuate to the nearest evacuation centers or move to higher ground. You of all the people there should know more. Improve Iligan. That's your MAIN job! In a sense i do agree that the drainage system for iligan is quite not up to par taking into account that being in the southeast asian region we have pretty much a monsoon season. Although I would say that even first world countries. i.e. here in the uk.. flooding still does happen, during summer train lines were disrupted for 3 days because of floods. THere is no way you can eradicate floods, there will always be flood plains, there are hills and rivers around iligan which we cannot just detonate and get rid of the problem. I would say that the government should do a full assesment as to how flood runs through the city and do proper actions to it. In the end its not about completely eliminating flash floods like these, because if that is so, there is only so much resources that we can allocate to such project. It has to be a balance between the capital and long term cost. I.e. is it better to build a complex drainage system or is it better to spend wisely on only the worst area hits and just get funds to compensate damages if things like these ever occur. Or just spend on what needs to be spent on drainage with as little amount as possible and use the money to do some other projects which would bring more long term benefit as floods like these dont happen that much anyway(i know its stupid, but for analogy) And talking about wider roads, mayor cruz can only do so much regarding this... even london cant do anything about road widening since the infrastructure is already there that toppling these buildings can do more harm than good. What iligan can do now is make use of what space they have, plan the flow of traffic effectively, and make sure not to make the same mistakes over again. In the end whats taking up iligans road space is the unlimited number of jeepneys we have. I think the public transport is the one thing that need to be looked at... i.e. do we get double decker bus which can carry more loads of passenger in one go and freeing up congestion and making sure that these buses come at set intervals (i.e. every 10 minutes for a particular destination) Plus im sure iligan doesnt get as much money as it would need to even undertake all these projects all at once. Hopefully each move the government does is attract investors and then that means more cash flow from tax, and that means more money to spend on infra structure. President Arroyo flew to Singapore on Sunday to attend the 13th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean) summit. Radio dzMM reported that Mrs Arroyo was originally scheduled to fly back to the Philippines on Thursday but decided to return earlier. The President is expected to arrive at 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport Centennial Terminal. An airport official said that soon as the other passengers have disembarked from the commercial plane, the President's party would then proceed to Davao City on board the same plane. The President would stay overnight in Davao City and would visit calamity areas in Cagayan de Oro City, Surigao City and Iligan City the following day. Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita said Mrs Arroyo cut short her trip because she was concerned about the additional damage that tropical storm "Mina" would wreak on the country, which is already affected by "Lando." Anthony Golez, deputy director of the Office of Civil Defense and deputy presidential spokesman, said Mrs Arroyo has ordered the evacuation of thousands of people in the Bicol region. Golez said the President was worried about possible landslides and flashfloods, like what happened last year where more than 1,000 people were killed. He said President Arroyo’s marching order was to "bring people out of harm’s way." "All these are precautionary measures of the President because she hates to see when she returns any untoward incident because of the typhoon," Golez said. As of posting time, classes in public and private schools have been suspended in Albay province where tropical storm Mina is forecast to landfall on Saturday. Chief government forecaster Nathaniel Cruz said Mina could become a "super typhoon" with winds of more than 220 kph. "With two days in the open sea, it has a big potential to become a very strong typhoon," Cruz said. By cutting short her trip in Singapore, President Arroyo would be missing the signing of the outcome documents of the Third East Asia Summit (Singapore Declaration on Climate Change, Energy and the Environment), the viewing of an exhibition hosted by Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, and the dinner that would be hosted by Singaporean President S.R. Nathan. Umel Lanao Correspondent ILIGAN CITY -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo assured support for the repair of the damages wrought by typhoon Lando in the city. During a meeting with local officials here, President Arroyo said the latest typhoon is the worst to hit Iligan City since the last flashflood on November 19, 1973. In light of this, the President said P15 million will be released for the reconstruction of the old Tubod bridge that cracked at the height of the flashflood. She also committed to support the dredging of the shallow Iligan Rand Mandulog rivers. The project is aimed to help control floods. Earlier, local officials voiced concern that the silted rivers of Tubod and Mandulog rivers can easily overflow and trigger new flashfloods especially during heavy downpours in the hinterlands. Arroyo directed the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to install a Doppler radar station in Central Mindanao to monitor and provide accurate weather advisories. For his part, Lanao del Norte Governor Mohammad Khalid Dimaporo also announced the reforestation and protection of watersheds of Maranding River in Lala town and Liangan Ricver. It is considered as the most splendid among the 23 waterfalls which are found in the “City Of Majestic Waterfalls” – Iligan City. It towers at 320 feet high and 9.3 kilometers away southwest from the city proper. Its waters flow through the Agus channel and come from Lake Lanao located in Marawi City. Although 90% of the waters are used to power the hydroelectric plant, the cascades still look majestic. Maria Cristina Falls contributed much in Iligan’s progress since aside from being a popular tourist attraction, it invites local and foreign tourists that add income to city's coffer. Maria Cristina Falls is also utilized as a hydroelectric power generating plant that supplies 80 percent of the total energy requirement of the Mindanao region. It made the city’s urbanization rushed upon the establishment of the plant in 1952. Countless industries were built and more people came to settle making Iligan’s economy elevate much. Thus due to this, Maria Cristina Falls is also tagged as the “Mother of Industry” and “Fountainhead of Progress”. She also welcomed the listing in the market of the TKC Steel Corporation, first integrated steel manufacturing company to be listed in the local bourse. Some 235 million shares at P9.68 per share were traded in the initial public offering of TKC shares, raising P2 billion for the company and pushing TKC's market capitalization to P1.9 billion. TKC Steel chairman Ben Tiu thanked the President for her tireless efforts to provide "the right environment" for business enterprises including his company to grow. "More than that, she has given the steel industry the due recognition it deserves as a vital element of her administration's development program, which incidentally was an ideal shared by her own father, President Diosdado Macapagal," he said. Tiu said they plan to build a blast furnace, the first in the country, in Iligan City that would bolster the country's reputation as a producer-exporter of quality steel. TKC will be the first steel company to use locally mined iron ore, thereby creating more jobs especially for residents of Lanao del Norte. The blast furnace will double the production capacity of TKC's billet-making subsidiary, Treasure Steelworks, from 300,000 to 600,000 metric tons a year. Umel Lanao correspondent ILIGAN CITY---President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo assured residents here over the weekend that the national government would help in the city's economic recovery amid the recent onslaught of "Typhoon Lando." The President made the assurance after arriving from her trip to Singapore for the Asian Summit. She said around US $P1.6 billion in investments were made by Global Steel for the Iligan steel plant. A strike by more than 5,000 employees was averted when Global Steel management managed to obtain a so-called assumption order from the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole). The employees claimed that Global Steel management failed to meet the conditions under their Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA). With the new investment, President Arroyo said she is confident of a socio-economic recovery of Iligan City dubbed as the industrial hub of the south. Arroyo also said the New Zealand government will provide assistance in the form of environment greening initiatives. The President claimed Iligan City as her second hometown where she reportedly spent her younger years at Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral home in Sitio Timoga, Buruu-n. Previously, Arroyo said P15 million will be released for the reconstruction of the old Tubod bridge that cracked at the height of the flashflood. She also committed to support the dredging of the shallow Iligan Rand Mandulog rivers to include the completion of the pending flood control project in coordination with funds allotted from the city and Lanao del Norte's congressional districts. Arroyo also directed the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) to install a Doppler radar station in Central Mindanao to monitor and provide accurate weather advisories. Don't worry @Tor construction of the airport (Laguindingan Airport) will start early next year as the critical issues surrounding the multi-billion peso project have already been resolved. :) Sunday, November 25, 2007 Laguindingan Airport Construction in early 2008 By Butch D. Enerio The actual construction of the Laguindingan International Airport in Misamis Oriental will finally start early next year as the critical issues surrounding the multi-billion peso project have already been resolved. Gov. Oscar Moreno, in a press conference here together with the officials of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) and the Presidential Management Staff (PMS), said that the P7.8 billion airport, one of the flagship projects of the Arroyo administration, is on track and that the loan component, the contracts for the civil works and the release of the mobilization fund are expected to be finalized before the end of the year. It is expected that the project will be finished and operational by 2011. The international airport project, Moreno said, was conceptualized twenty years ago, when President Arroyo was then the undersecretary of the Department of Trade and Industry. She followed through with her commitment for the realization of the project when she became a legislator and was able to secure funding for the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor to hasten the project study for the international airport project. The airport’s civil works – the construction of the runway, terminal and other facilities – will amount to P5 billion, while the remaining P2.8 billion will be spent for the air navigational equipment. Engineer Della P. Capicenio of the DOTC and airport project manager, said that they are now in the final stage of the qualification process, and the technical working group has already completed their appraisal and will be signing contracts before the end of November, with the awarding to be done before yearend. She said problems with the relocation of the inhabitants affected by the project have already been ironed out and that they are in the process of initially constructing 100 houses of the 425 housing units they target to construct. Capicenio said that there are four contractors who participated and submitted their qualification documents and all four are Korean companies, the project being funded by the Korean Eximbank. The project has been postponed in the past due to revisions in the costing as affected by the erratic exchange rate. When the project was first envisioned in 1991, it was only for P900 million. When it was again revised in 2002, this was already at P5.3 billion. Today, the project is already estimated to cost P 7.853 billion or 167 million US Dollars. This revised cost was discussed with officials of the Export-Import Bank of Korea and they have expressed their willingness to extend additional loans for the project as endorsed by National Economic and Development Authority. The project will be handled by Korean contractors as specified in the loan agreement. The winning contractor however is free to subcontract or forge a tie-up with Filipino companies to handle the job. The new airport once operational will replace the Lumbia airport now servicing Cagayan de Oro and the whole of Northern Mindanao. With the new air navigational technology, the new airport would be the safest and passenger comfort in the terminals will be of utmost consideration like in modern airports. The Laguindingan international airport could serve 1.2 million passengers a year or about 100,000 per month. It is designed for an Airbus 330 and other bigger airplanes. And the whole airport’s design is modular, which means it can easily be expanded in the future, if necessary. The Ayala Group of Companies at first donated 88.4 hectares for the project, then signified the donation of another 94 hectares which is part of the runway and the terminal. http://bp1.blogger.com/_p6TqhBe7UlU/R0kCzYd1J1I/AAAAAAAADS4/xPPHwYlU2Ec/s1600/Laguindingan%2Bairport.jpg MisOr Governor Oscar Moreno (center) updates local press on the progress of the P7.8-B Laguindingan International Airport Project during a press conference at the Provincial Capitol. I am not that well versed of Iligan, but I do understand that its long term plan is contained within the MIRAIC (Metro Iligan Regional Agro Industrial Center) a vital component of the greater CIC plan. I believed that early on, commensurate to the MIRAIC plan was to improve and rehabilitate inorder to re-open the airport in Balo-i...but was not agressively pursued later on as RDC Region 10 was bent on realizing Laguindingan Airport whose funding and technicalities has dwindled the project to the doldrums. Iligan's Balo-i airport improvement was put on hold in lieu of LIA in neighboring Misamis- a project Iligan can also become a direct beneficiary. Taking that concept into consideration, Balo-i was not favored to gave more emphasis for LIA...why now for Lumbia? I believed the mayor must be thinking that: should there be any airport improvement within the region as was proposed by the Regional Development Council 10, it is just fair for it to go this time to Balo-i. RDC has successfully reopened our airport in Labo, Ozamis...it has also improved the airport in Mambajao, Camiguin... ...why not in Iligan.? The mayor should be praised for elevating this need in the RDC, the need for an equitable infrastructure a city like Iligan rightfully so deserves. just my two cents worth of opinion kasimanwas.. tough November 26th, 2007, 09:46 PM LCP-M'dao Island Cluster Caravan reels off Nov. 28 in CDeO by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob Cagayan de Oro City (26 November) -- The League of Cities in the Philippines (LCP) will hold a caravan on social and business development across five (5) cities in Mindanao from Nov. 28-Dec. 1, this year. CdO's proposal was for an expansion of their runway (width, as in "pagpalapad"). 1. Wider landing strips means safer landings. Why should anyone go against that? 2. Lumbia is still a local airport, whereas, Laguindingan is to be an INTERNATIONAL airport. Both have separate fundings and will serve different kinds of clientele. What's the fuss? 3. AFAIK, RDC did not discuss trashing the Laguindingan project. Why should they? They know that such a facility will be a boost to Mis.Or. businesses and industries. 4. If you've read the news, the World Bank has disapproved the RP's new loan package. Reason? Corruption. Everybody thought that Anybody could do it, but Nobody realized that Everybody wouldn't. Because if they will continue operating it as a commercial airport, it'll still be money well spent. Tor November 27th, 2007, 12:15 PM u wer asking kung bat xa naging mayor ng iligan simple people of iligan voted him.. The statement I made was a conjecture, not a question. Of course, my friend, the people's votes brought him to the seat, to power. But that was not I was trying to raise and point out. My point was that, why did the people voted for him? and we are so hapi na siya ang naging mayor ng iligan dahil sa kanya gumanda ang iligan, Please define WE. Do you mean all Iliganons, the majority, or just your clan, or perhaps you mean your clique? OKAY, you're happy and I am not going to argue with you whether or not he tickles your fancy. If you enjoy him, go ahead and cherish him. Who am I to argue with you about what makes you happy, WHO makes you happy and whatnot. Afterall, I'm just an ordinary Iliganon -- NO vast wealth to flaunt to friends and nothing to ask for protection from government officials. However, I pay my taxes and I pay them diligently. Am I not entitled to scrutinize where my hard-earned money is spent, how was it spent and by who spent it for what? I can probably ignore to be vigilant at random times but I cannot be apathetic all the time. That's plain dumb. I'm not the type of guy, are you? When you said "we", you gave me the impression that you meant the majority of the people of Iligan. Ahemm! Check your facts, dude. Something is telling me you're either banking on an antiquated fact or your pulse beats at varience. Either way, I honestly think you're flat out WRONG! The vast majority of Iliganons were dissatisfied with the way he runs his business as a city administrator. I and several others are, for example. Iligan did not really improve under his administration. Iligan is still is what it was 15 years ago. I left Iligan in 1995 to study in Manila. After 12 long years I can barely see any substantial development happening in the city today. The only substantial addition I can see is Gaisano Mall, which, BTW, is not yet operational. What does that mean? It means this: while the Iliganons are still expecting a mall to enjoy, the Cagayanons have already 5 huge malls to revel in. Do any of these things get into your mind? dumi ang mga investors, at may trabaho ang mga iliganon.... Aside from Gaisano, who else has invested in Iligan? NObody. Come on, dude. OPEN your eyes. There's really none aside from Gaisano. And even Gaisano is not solely a product of Cruz's efforts. If anything, it was Gaisano's vision to expand because there's only a little space left for them to explore in Cagayan de Oro. Kung baga pa--mumho nalang ta sa Cagayan de Oro. That's what Iligan has become due to wanton neglect by its past and present administrators. Whether we like it or not, that's what Iligan has become today. Iligan's growth rate is a sluggish, and at the rate it's going, it won't be far from now that its neighboring cities would catch up on it anytime soon. Look, Iligan does not have an airport. It does not even have an outsourcing company. Dumaguete, a city with a population half of Iligan has already 4 or 5 of those providing jobs to its young and talented residents. Cagayan is --obviously-- booming. I don't think I have to substantiate how is that because I am talking about an obvious occurence. Pagadian, another city with a population half of Iligan's, is expecting 2 malls to open anytime soon. Ozamis, a city 1/4 of the size of Iligan has an airport with direct flights to Manila and a well-equipped seaport. (I heard nasty reports about a corrupted system employed in Iligan maritime that's why Iliganon businessmen opted for Cagayan de Oro's seaport facility.) Even Marawi's buildings are bigger than the ones in Iligan -- a sign of Marawi's growing economy. BUT what about ILIGAN? Yeah, what about our beloved city that was once the jewel of Northen Mindanao? Care to furnish us with Iligan's evolution, pare? I'd like to know it directly from you. at tama naman xa bat paba aayusin ang lumbia airport may LIA naman bukas dag2 gasto lng yun sa gov't... Pasensya na at hindi ko naklaro na Lumbia Airport pala ang tinututulan nyang palakihin. An annual activity of the CFO, the campaign aims to assist prospective migrants in making informed decisions regarding settlement abroad, as well as, generate community involvement in migration concerns, Jennifer O. Gonzales, CFO Executive Director, said. It also aims to raise public awareness on various issues concerning migration, inter-racial marriages and existing government policies and programs directed against illegal recruitment, documentation fraud and human trafficking. Gonzales also said the campaign will include the conduct of symposia, public assemblies, radio interviews and interaction with the non-government organization, religious leaders, local government officials, press conferences, briefings and radio interviews by the IACEIC Team members. Meanwhile, the campaign will include the following activities in the specific areas and dates: Radio interviews from Nov. 24-25 in Iligan City and Nov. 26-28, in Tubod, Lanao del Norte. While in Iligan City the IACEC will call on City Mayor Lawrence and meet with the local leaders, law enforcement officers, municipal social welfare development officer and the local civil registrars, among others. Again, the IACEC team will conduct a symposium with the graduate school of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, (MSU-IIT) on migration concerns before it sets out to Tubod, Lanao del Norte's capital town. In Tubod, the IACEC team will also call on Mayor Eduardo Mansueto and engage the town officials, law enforcers, MSWD and LCR Officers in a "pulong-pulong" or dialogue, along with the NGO Volunteers Advocating Reforms for the Future. From there, the IACEC team will proceed to Pagadian City where they will also conduct press briefings and radio interviews from Nov. 29-30.
