Supposedly wifi na pero pinahinto ng may-ari kasi pangit ang service at mahina ang signal ng ISP. lilipat pa daw ng ibang ISP bago ito iadvertise na hotspot.

Nireview ko previous threads natin from 1 to 16 kahapon. In a span of 2 years malaki talaga pinagbago sa landscape ng city natin based on my observation. However, the city needs to work harder on areas where progress has yet to be dramatic, but, at the same time, let’s rejoice in our development! :)

Would it not be better if pictures are posted with the appropriate captions. It gives viewers an idea of what they are viewing. It would also be a big help for viewers to recall the views they last saw years back. I hope my suggestion would not be a burden. Thanks!

High Court upholds election victory of Lanao Norte solon (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20080213116907.html)
By BEN R. ROSARIO

The Supreme Court has upheld the proclamation of Lanao del Norte Rep. Vicente Belmonte as the winning congressional candidate in the province’s first district, thereby, junking a petition by his rival who had earlier asked the House of Representatives to strip him of his post.

In an en banc resolution of a petition for certiorari filed by former Lanao del Norte Gov. Imelda Q. Dimaporo, the High Court declared Comelec’s proclamation of Belmonte to be valid even as it voided a status quo ante order or temporary restraining order it had issued to stop the proclamation.

The 12-page resolution written by Associate Justice Ruben T. Reyes carried no dissenting opinion.

The SC ruled that Belmonte had already been proclaimed the duly elected congressman of the district and had, in fact, taken his oath before then Speaker Jose de Venecia when the court issued the status quo ante order.

The court TRO was issued on Oct. 2, 2007 upon a motion filed by Dimaporo. However, the directive has been rendered moot by Belmonte’s proclamation which came six days earlier.

"In the light of this development, jurisdiction over this case has already been transferred to the House of Representatives Electoral Tribunal," the court ruled. "When there has been a proclamation and a defeated candidate claims to be the winner, it is the Electoral Tribunal already that has jurisdiction over the case."

The High Court case stemmed from a petition by Dimaporo who tried to stop the Comelec from proclaiming Belmonte. She questioned the exclusion of certificates of canvass from the towns of Kauswagan, Bacolod and Maigo.

However, Comelec had decided to pursue the proclamation, saying it was convinced that the COC's were indeed manipulated.

The Comelec believed that the ballot boxes containing the results of the elections in the said municipalities have been tampered with.

The National Bureau of Investigation reported that the padlocks of the ballot boxes have been forcibly destroyed, adding that this was apparently done by still unidentified persons who raided the room of Vice governor Irma Umpa where the boxes were kept on the night of May 19, 2007.

Prior to this incident, official partial results of the elections in the four other localities of the First District showed Belmonte leading third placer Dimaporo by over 17,000 votes.

Reacting to the SC ruling, Belmonte immediately offered a hand of reconciliation to Dimaporo.

"My victory is likewise the triumph of our constituents in Lanao del Norte who never wavered in their faith that justice will be served. The leadership of the House of Representatives also deserves a pat on the back for observing prudence when my political foes tried to mislead them into illegally ousting me," the neophyte solon said.

Two weeks ago, House Secretary General Roberto Nazareno received from the Comelec a directive informing him that Belmonte should be stripped of his post in compliance with the status quo ante order issued by the High Court.

Believing that the issue was fraught with legal technicalities, Nazareno ignored the poll body’s order and sought the opinion of the House legal department.

FINALLY!

In the near future, this old building will be replaced with a modern skyscraper. :D

Hehe...

From reading many of the posts here, it indicates how much many posters look forward to the rebuilding of Iligan City into a modern center of trade and commerece and that is a good thing.

From someone who so far is only able to view Iligan City from a distance through your pictures, text and video are things that have been missing from my part of the world for a long time. This and other things may be what continue my interest in Iligan City.

Many of your pictures show me so many of the streets lined with small and I would assume independently owned and operated stores, shops etc. To me things like this give any city, town or locality " Character " and an identity of its own. Things such as this in my part of the world were similar to this when I was growing up and so much of it is gone now. Shopping Centers, strip malls, and finally major sized shopping malls have replaced thousands of small and medium sized independently owned and operated stores and shops all of which had their own unique and individual " character " and knew many of their regular customers on a first name basis.

National and International retailers such as Walmart, Home Depot, Target, Best Buy, Costco and other USA National chains drive independent retailers out of business soon after comming into a city or locality. When home Depot opened a huge store near me, all of the independent hardware stores that had been here for years vanished within a year. I am not condemming the National big chain sotres here as I buy things in some of them myself but the " character " of the smaller stores and shops is long gone.

When I was a child and we used to go on family vacations, the Hotels, Motels and tourist cabins ( maybe similar to what you call Pension House ) all had their own individual identities and character making these vacations fun with so many interesting sizes, shapes, designs and road signs. These have been replaced with look-alike national and international hotel and motel chains in many areas now making long drives and vacations a lot less scenic and interesting than they once were.

Progress in many ways is a good thing. I hope the shopping mall (s) that it appears many of you want do become a reality for you in the near future and I don't think anyone can say that you do not deserve these things and if all goes well they will bring more industry and commerece to your city.

The point I am trying to bring out here is to treasure many of the things you have there in Iligan today as it appears that so many things such as the stores, shops, hotels and other things have their own distinct " character " in their design and the way they operate their business. In many of them they cater to the individual which differs from businesses that cater to the mass market. At a future time when a high percentage of Iligan City could turn into large concrete and glass buildings and the former small shopping areas and other businesses are gone forever you may miss it.

I look forward to visiting Iligan City for what it has at the present time. It may reinforce the impression I have of it from viewing your pictures, reading your text and viewing many videos taken by individuals that reside there. It could also alter the impression I have of it as well, and I will let you know after I visit in person. Until that time however and in my own mind, Iligan is a City with its own individuality and character.

Treasure some of the things you have today as someday they may only exist in your mind.

Yeah that’s true I myself miss those good old days during my childhood days including what I’ve seen before and now no longer existent. I understand what you feel, as urbanization is fast pacing and the need for more space I know someday those things will all gone forever and replaced with those high rise concrete buildings. :)

You are right that we must treasure some of the things we have today, as someday they may only exist in our mind. :cheers1:

The only existing building (unused) I know is the bagsakan market. If ako lang ang masusunod, gusto ko sana tapusin ang pagconcrete nito tapos itransfer ang wet and central market doon katulad sa bulua terminal ng cdo.

Separate congressional district mulled for Iligan (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/02/15/news/separate.congressional.district.mulled.for.iligan.html)

ILIGAN CITY -- A separate congressional district is mulled for this premier industrial city in the south.

The measure has already passed first reading at the House of Representatives late last year and is now subjected to a series of public hearings here and in seven towns of Lanao del Norte.

Authored by Lanao del Norte Representative Vicente Belmonte, House Bill 3164 seeks to carve this city out of the first congressional district and stand as an independent congressional district.

Currently, the first district is composed of Iligan City and the coastal towns of Linamon, Kauswagan, Bacolod, Maigo, Kolambugan, Tubod and Baroy.

Belmonte said slicing away Iligan as an independent congressional district can help fast-track development in the communities of both the city and the seven towns.

He particularly cited the availability of a new Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) or pork barrel that can be solely focused on Iligan communities while the PDAF for the first district will now be shared by lesser number of communities.

Belmonte's bill provides that after slicing away Iligan, the seven remaining towns shall be the new composition of the first district.

Created on June 16, 1950 with 44 barangays, Iligan was declared a highly urbanized city in 1983.

The National Statistics Office projects the city's 2007 population of 285,061 to grow to 342,087 by 2010.

The 1987 Constitution provides that for a city to become a legislative district, it must have a population of at least 250,000.

As host of Mindanao's principal power generation, Iligan's economy is largely underpinned by the business activities of its industrial locators, foremost of which is the former National Steel Corporation (NSC) now Global Steel.

Although it has suffered from the industrial fallout almost a decade ago, especially when the then NSC closed down, the local economy has recovered. It's businesses also improved. (Ryan D. Rosauro)

I heard these rumors from one of my friend's neighbor who told her about that her son/daughter had trainings in Manila for the opening of Mcdo in Iligan and just recently my brother's (who took HRM in Medical) teacher also mentioned that the manager is from Medical also.

(Ryan D. Rosauro)

^^285,061 was the 2000 census and not the 2007.

Oo nga baka yong 342,087 na sinasabi is the projected population this 2008. :)

Is it true that Mcdo is one of the tenants specifically the ground floor of Rivson Building (I dunno if I spelled it right or perhaps the correct name of the building) that building just in front of SBG.

I heard these rumors from one of my friend's neighbor who told her about that her son/daughter had trainings in Manila for the opening of Mcdo in Iligan and just recently my brother's (who took HRM in Medical) teacher also mentioned that the manager is from Medical also.

I guess it's just another rumor. Pagkakaalam ko yung pinadala sa Maynila ay para sa Gaisano Mall

Oo nga baka yong 342,087 na sinasabi is the projected population this 2008. :)

I'll just wait for the latest census to be published. Yun nga lang August 2007 pa sinimulan pero wala pa rin ang result.

Psalm schedules sale of 10 state-owned power plants this year (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/feb/15/yehey/business/20080215bus5.html)

STATE-RUN Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM) is looking to dispose 10 power plants operated by state-owned National Power Corp. (Napocor) within the year.

Based on its indicative sale schedule, the agency tasked with selling government’s power assets plans to auction off Napocor’s geothermal plants as well as a couple of diesel and hydroelectric units.

The plants that have been lined up for privatization are the decommissioned Bataan Thermal Power Plant in Limay, for April; the Tiwi Geothermal Power Plant in Albay, and the MakBan Geothermal Power Plant in Laguna, for May; and the Amlan Hydroelectric Power Plant in Negros Oriental, for June.

Also in the list are the following: for July, the Limay Combined-Cycle Power Plant in Bataan, the Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plant in Negros Oriental, and the Panay Diesel Power Plant in Iloilo; for August, the Leyte Geothermal Power Plant in Tongonan and the Bohol Diesel Power Plant in Tagbilaran City; for September, the BacMan Geothermal Power Plant in Sorsogon, and the Iligan Diesel 1 and 2 in Dalipuga; for November, the Subic-Zambales Diesel II in Olongapo City; and for December, the Aplaya Diesel Power Plant in Misamis Oriental and the GenSan Diesel Power Plant in South Cotabato.

Officials from both Psalm and Napocor said, however, that the sale schedule is still subject to the approval of both firms’ boards.

Under the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001 (Epira), Psalm is tasked to privatize 70 percent of Napocor’s generation capacity and the output of independent power producers to administrators before an open access regime can take effect. An open access regime allows consumers to choose their suppliers.

Psalm has so far privatized 11 of Napocor’s power plants with a total capacity of about 1,900 megawatts corresponding to a 42.8-percent privatization threshold.

The 10 indicative facilities lined up for this year have a combined capacity of less than 2,000 megawatts, which if sold is more than enough to meet Psalm’s target under the Epira.

First National Komedya Fiesta (http://www.mb.com.ph/OPED20080215117022.html)

To generate awareness and increase the understanding of and appreciation for the Komedya, the First Komedya Fiesta will be staged on all Fridays of this month at the University of the Philippines (UP) in Diliman, Quezon City.

The Komedya – referred to as the moromoro by the Tagalogs and Ilokanos, Linambay by the Cebuanos, Morosmoros by the Ilonggos, and Palo-palo by the Ivatans – is a theater form that has its origins in the Spanish theatrical traditions of the 16th-18th centuries whose plot revolves around the social, political, and religious conflicts between Muslim and Christian heroes. This genre reached Philippine shores through the Hispanic Christianization of the country and dominated Philippine theater for over 300 years.

While the Komedya performances will be the principal event, Komedya Fiesta 2008 will also feature an international conference, an exhibition, and a colloquium to provide a venue for scholars, cultural researchers, artists, and production teams to discuss issues and concerns relative to this ageold theater tradition.

The Fiesta will feature performances by the Komedya ng San Dionisio (Parañaque), Komedya ng San Miguel (Iligan City), Hiraya Theater Company (San Jose, Antique), Komedya ng Don Galo (Parañaque), Dulaang UP (UP Diliman), and Comedia de Baler (Baler, Aurora). An opening parade with marching bands, higantes, stilt walkers, and jugglers, will usher in the festival. Other features of the Fiesta include the Balagtasan, Paseo, Serenata ng mga Banda, Palabas sa Kubo with performances such as puppet shows, storytelling, and komedya excerpts), kodaKomedya, Palaro, and a Perya (featuring rides and game booths). Komedya Fiesta 2008 is sponsored by the Office of the UP Chancellor through the College of Arts and Letters, in cooperation with the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts, with the support of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

It is hoped that through this first national Komedya festival, significant initiatives can be undertaken to advance the studies done in the early 80s on this genre, and promote greater appreciation of this theater form. The intricacies of this theater form, particularly its performance conventions, production process, and organizational practices, and the way in which this tradition has been passed on from one generation to the next, warrants an in-depth research if we are to succeed in preserving this beautiful theater form for future generations.

Falls hopping

May bagong paborito ngayon ang mga gimikero: Ito ang “falls hopping" o ang pamamasyal sa iba’t-ibang falls o talon. Nauuso ngayon ang sports na ito sa mga mountaineers.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/kap1.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/kap2.jpg

Kalesa in Iligan City!

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/kalesa.jpg

This picture was taken in Iligan City in the island of Mindanao, one of the few places in the Philippines which still use Kalesa as a mode of transportation. Other places are Vigan, Ilocos Sur , Intramuros and Binondo in Manila. This mode of transportation is a rarity nowadays. Oh you can also ride the Kalesa in Luneta Park in Manila and usually tourist are the one riding them.

According to Wikipedia:

A kalesa looks like an inclined cart. It has two round wheels on each side and two rows of seats that can accommodate four persons. The driver sits on a block of wood located at the front of the cart near the horse.

The kalesa was introduced in the 18th century during the Spanish occupation, it became one of the modes of transportation in the Philippines, especially for commerce. Rich Filipinos known as the ilustrados used the kalesa for personal travel as well as for the transport of goods to nearby areas.

Fuerza de San Miguel
Iligan City, Lanao del Norte
By muog

Nothing remains of this fort one of the older ones in Mindanao. This fort of stone and mortar was designed as star-shaped fort (Valdez Tamon 1738), however, an 1898 map of Iligan draws the fort as a quadrilateral structure with corner bastions indicating some renovations. Originally named San Francisco Xavier, it was renamed San Miguel later. Fort San Francisco may have been built by the Jesuits as early as the 17th century. Built as an outer outpost to contain the expansion of the Cotabato sultanate into northern Mindanao, the fort kept Sultan Kudarat of Cotabato from overrunning northern Mindanao. The fort was later maintained to prevent the Iranun, a coastal-dwelling branch of the Maranao, from controlling Iligan Bay.Fort San Miguel developed as the core of the what was to become the city of Iligan. Iligan celebrates as its patronal fiesta, San Miguel the namesake of the fort. The city fiesta is celebrated with a dramatic presentation on St. Michael the Archangel, called a comedia. The visual evidence we have for the fort comes from the Valdes Tamon report of 1738 and from the 19th century map cited above. Damaged by a 1916 flood, there are presently no traces of the fort. Oral tradition identifies the fort’s site as the district of Timoga, Iligan City, near the mouth of the Timoga River, a branch of the Agus, a swift river which has its source in Lake Lanao and falls down a cataract called Maria Cristina. However, the 1898 map of Iligan locates the fort at the edge of the poblacion near a waterway. According to this map, Iligan’s Central Market is close to the fort’s site.A photograph of the fort dated 1903 is in Filipinas Heritage Library AR00260; its original source is Xavier University’s Museo de Oro. The photograph is most likely from the early 20th century. It is a long view showing the curtain wall, bastion and a building inside the fort perimeter. Although the photograph is in poor condition, it suggests that the fort was redesigned by the end of the 19th century.

Saan kaya dito itinayo ang sinasabing fortress.

http://www.aenet.org/manila-expo/p24ima9.jpg

Plan of Iligan. 1898. SHM On Mindanao, the southernmost island in the archipelago, the Spaniards only managed to control some points along the coast. In Iligan, to the north, a fortress was built in the first third of the 17th century, and the town grew up around this.

Bukana of Iligan River: the Site of Fort St. Francis Xavier (area near Gaisano) and Fort Victoria (the present PNB)
by Carino Antequisa

http://www.historicaljourney.org/images/victoria.jpg

http://www.historicaljourney.org/images/iligan.jpg
Bank of Iligan River where Fort Victoria once stood

The earliest written record of Iligan (or Yligan) refers to the settlement situated at the mouth of a river bearing the same name. The Jesuits of Mindanao visited the settlement of Iligan sometime in 1630. In 1639, the Jesuits accompanied the expedition of Captain Francisco de Atienza to the Lake Lanao region and started the mission in Iligan.

The early village of Iligan, like Bayug, was a flourishing trading village where the Maranaos traded with foreigners including Muslims, Chinese and Visayans.

The Iligan River in the 1600's was navigable up to a few kilometres where the Pugaan River converged with the Iligan River. Upriver along the Iligan and Pugaan Rivers were Maranao settlements mostly ruled by Datus related to the Datus in the Lake Lanao region. To prevent the Maranaos from attacking the fledgling Christian settlement in Bayug, the Spanish erected a stone fort, Fuerte de San Francisco Javier (Fort St. Francis Xavier) at the mouth of Iligan River, in the vicinity of the present-day Gaisano.

The Fuerte de San Francisco Javier, became the base of the Corregimiento de Iligan (Military Province of Iligan) that comprised the present-day provinces of Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Misamis Occidental and portions of Zamboanga del Norte and Misamis Oriental.

The Fuerte de San Francisco Javier withstand Moro attacks for more than two centuries but not to the ravages of time and the force of nature. In 1754, the Fort was able to withstand a month-long siege by the Moros until the re-enforcements from Bohol arrived. The defenders of Iligan were led by the Jesuit Fr. Jose Ducos, who later became the Captain General of the Spanish armada of the Corregimiento de Iligan guarding Iligan Bay against the Moros. Fr. Ducos led a military campaign against the Maranao and Iranun settlements in the mouth of the Rivers of Magoong, Linamon, Lapayan and Panguil Bay. Fr. Ducos lobbied to the Governor General for the construction of a bigger fort in Misamis at the mouth of Panguil Bay to prevent the forces of the Maranaos and Iranuns from the Panguil area in the present-day towns of Tubod, Lala, Kapatagan, Sapad, Salvador and Aurora.

In 1850, due to a massive flood, the mouth of Iligan River was severely eroded causing the Fuerte de San Francisco Javier to sunk. The Gobernadorcillo ordered the transfer of the settlement to another location along the Iligan River in the present day Poblacion and the construction of a new fort. The new fort was named Fuerte de Victoria (Fort Victoria), in honor of Princess Victoria, the daughter of King Alfonso the XII, the reigning king of Spain at that time. It was built in the site of the present-day PNB-Iligan.

In 1891, Fort Victoria was reinforced and was used as base by Governor General Valeriano Weyler in his campaign against the Maranaos in the Lake Lanao region. Gov. Gen. Weyler built a road with a chain of smaller forts as supply line from Fort Victoria to present-day Marawi City.

The Maranaos, under the leadership of Datu Akadir Akobar popularly known as Amai Pakpak, defended Fort Marahui but they were forced to retreat due to the superiority of the armaments of the combined Spanish and Filipino forces. The conquering forces were not able to stay long in Marawi because of the continued attacks by the Maranaos that threatened to cut their supply lines from Fort Victoria. General Weyler decided to retreat from Marawi and build a stronger fort in Mumongan (present Baloi) along the Agus River. The fort was named after Gov. Gen. Weyler.
Fort Victoria were the bastions of Spanish encroachment in the Maranao territories. They hastened the conversion of the natives, including some Maranaos, to Christianity and solidify the will of the Iliganons to survive amidst the sustained threat of Moro counter-attacks. For centuries, they become symbols of Spanish-Christian colonial designs where the roots of the present-day tension and suspicion originated.

The Forts may have gone forever but the pride that it has inculcated in the hearts of the inhabitants of Iligan and the terror it sowed in the minds of the Maranaos remains in the subconscious mind of the people now expressed in prejudices and biases.

To reminisce of the fort is to remind us that the journey to healing continues beyond the present generation. CVA

Bayug Island and Bukana of Mandulog River
by Carino Antequisa

http://www.historicaljourney.org/images/bayugsmall.jpg
Kuta sa Bayug

The present-day Bayug Island and Bukana of the Mandulog River are sites of the pre-Islamic and pre-colonial communities of Iligan and Lanao. The inhabitants of this community were the ancestors of the present day Higaunons, Maranaos and Iliganons. This community was probably among the earliest settlements along Northern Mindanao and a destination of traders from other communities along the Iligan Bay, other islands of the Philippine Archipelago and even Southeast Asia.

Indian, Chinese and Muslim traders and preachers from Sulu or probably from Tagoloan (now part of Misamis Oriental) might have visited the area but did not establish a permanent foothold.

The Bayug settlement was probably having considerable inhabitants and flourishing economy that attracted the attention of the displaced Boholanos who had resettled and ruled present-day Dapitan in the early 1500's. The Christianized Boholanos of Dapitan attacked and conquered the Barangay of Bayug between 1575 and 1585. The Boholanos was led by Manook, the son of Datu Pagbuaya who was the chieftain of the Boholanos who subjugated the Subanons in Dapitan. Datu Pagbuaya was a brother of Datu Dailisan, the chieftain of the Kingdom of Panglao, near Bohol, who was killed by the raiding Portuguese and Ternatans around the second quarter of the 1500's. Datu Pagbuaya escaped the carnage and resettled in Dapitan along with an estimated 1,000 relatives and followers. When the ships of the Legaspi expedition were scouring the Bohol Sea to find the route to Sugbo in 1565, they met Datu Pagbuaya who provided Legaspi with pilots to guide them to Bohol and Sugbo. In Bohol, Legaspi met and had a blood compact with Rajah Katunao whom we now knew as Sikatuna. Not long after, the Boholanos of Dapitan converted to Christianity and became strong allies of the Spanish in their conquest of other islands and tribes.
According to the accounts of Fr. Francisco Combes, a Jesuit priest-historian assigned in Mindanao in the 1660's, in his book Historia de las Islas de Mindanao, Jolo y sus Adjacentes (History of the Islands of Mindanao, Jolo and its Adjacent Islands), among those converted was Manook who was baptized as Pedro Manuel Manook. When Manook became a Christian, he aided Legaspi in the conquest of Manila, Panay, Camarines and later subdued the village of Bayug. He facilitated the conversion of the inhabitants to Christianity around the later years of the 1500s. Bayug then became among the earliest communities to accept Christianity and became the mission area of the Augustinian Recollects by the first decade of 1600's. It was recorded that in 1626 the visitador of Bayug was the Recollect Fray Nicolas de San Juan.

The presence of the conquering Spanish and Boholanos should have threatened the neighboring Barangays especially those that have started embracing Islam. This situation greatly altered the dynamics of the people of the Lanao region towards the end of 1600's.

In 1637, Governor General Sebastian Hurtado de Corcuera decided to attack Sultan Kudarat, the ruler of Maguindanao and his Iranun and Maranao allies. Sultan Kudarat's navy and troops were defeated by the superior forces of Gov. Gen. Corcuera in the battles of Ramitan and Baras, now barangays of the Municipality of Picong (formerly Sultan Gumander), Lanao del Sur. Some members of the Sultan's family, including his wife and child, were killed. The Sultan was wounded but was able to escape to Butig, the territory of Datu Nuni Amatunding, his brother-in-law. Gov. Gen Corcuera occupied Ramitan and Baras and used it as a base for further conquest of the Maranao and Iranun territories. After recuperating from his wound, Sultan Kudarat incited the Maranao datus to fight the Spaniards. Many of the Maranao datus built fortifications, gathered weapons and stored food. Some of the communities relocated to interior places. In 1639, Gov. Gen. Corcuera ordered the attack of the Maranaos in Lake Lanao. The expedition was composed of Spanish soldiers and converted natives from Caraga and led by Captain Francisco Atienza, the Alkalde-Mayor of Caraga. The expedition landed in Bayug and made it the base of their campaign against the Maranaos. This action earned the ire of the Maranaos who now view the Bayug community as enemy.

The forces of Captain Atienza was able to gain foothold in Lake Lanao and attempted to build a fort in Dansalan (the old name of Marawi City) in early April 1639 but were continuously harassed by the Maranaos and the Iranuns under Datu Nuni Amatunding, the Datu of Butig. The situation forced Admiral Pedro Almonte, the Commanding Officer of all Spanish Military forces in Mindanao and Sulu, to send a rescue mission to Lake Lanao. The rescue mission attacked Butig and reached Dansalan in late April 1639, just in time before Atienza's forces were defeated.

The situation of the Spanish forces in Lake Lanao was unbearable prompting Captain Atienza to retreat to Bayug by the end of April 1639. In anticipation of Maranao counter-attack, the Spanish fortified Bayug and erected the first stone fort Fuerte de San Francisco Xavier (Fort St. Francis Xavier) at the mouth of Iligan. The Spanish raided smaller villages more accessible from Bayug and sent reconnaissance patrols to Maranao territories. Thus, began the hostilities of the inhabitants of Bayug and Iligan and the Moros of Lake Lanao region that was to spread to other areas and have lasted for 300 years.

In May 1642, Fr. Francisco de Mendoza, S.J. accompanied one of the reconnaissance patrols between Iligan and Dansalan. The patrol was ambushed by Maranao warriors killing Fr. Mendoza and wounding others.

After 400 years, Bayug now is just an ordinary village of Iligan City known for its famous hanging bridge and abundant kuyampi (small freshwater crabs) that comes along with the inundation of the banks of the Mandulog river. Its history is almost forgotten. Yet, this place is a silent witness to the historical crossroad journeyed by the peoples of Iligan and Lanao.

Bayug must remind us of the turbulent encounter of two cultures - the indigenous and the western - and the beginning of the story of conquest, resistance and collaboration in the Lanao region.

I hope the authorities will do something to popularize these untold stories of martyrs and of historical sites in Iligan.

- Sana magbasa sila para malalaman nila ang history at maiintindihan nila kung gaano ka importante ang mga ito.

- Sana maglaan ng pundo para sa development (markers, parks) at promotion ng mga lugar na to.

- Sana may regular na tours with guides para sa mga estudyante, mga kawani ng pribado at goyerno, Muslim man o Kristyano (to discover the lessons and insights they embodied for peacebuilding)

:bash:

Tanong lang po. Under the Cruz Administration, meron bang binuong Historical Site Development Committee (HSDC)? Kung wala, sana maki-share siya ng notes with Mayor Jaraula of CDO. Baka maganda rin to para sa Iligan. :)

PSALM sets revised target for NPC plants privatization

Myrna M. Velasco

Banking on the interest of prospective investors, the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) has laid down revised targets for the divestment of the remaining generation assets of the National Power Corporation.

The company first lines up on the auction block the 275-megawatt Tiwi and 410-MW Makiling-Banahaw geothermal plants.

The 192.5-MW Palinpinon geothermal plant and 146.5-MW Panay diesel plant should have been the first package on the disposal schedule, but due to concerns on the former’s steam supply contract, the bidding schedule has been delayed.

The other plants due for bidding this year are the: 150-MW Bacon-Manito geothermal to be lumped with 112.5-MW geothermal and 22-MW Bohol diesel plants; the 620-MW Limay diesel and 0.8-MW Amlan hydro plants; and the 118.3-MW Iligan diesel plants in Mindanao.

For 2009, those targetted privatization are for the 310-MW Navotas thermal and 246-MW Angat hydropower plants.

PSALM vice president for asset management Froilan Tampinco is expecting that they would also accomplish much in asset divestments this year; replicating the performance logged last year in which they brought NPC’s privatization level at 42percent.

After Tiwi-MakBan, PSALM is lining up the Palinpinon-Panay package by the middle of this year, hoping that the concern on the geothermal resource sales contract (GRSC) would already be resolved by then.

While there remain some legal concerns on the Tiwi-Makban plant’s privatization, some industry players see this addressed after the sale of the power assets, especially if the buyer would be a local company or with Filipino partners.

Even with President Arroyo’s directive to already accelerate the implementation of open access in the power industry, PSALM said it is still keen to achieve the 70-percent level of privatization this year to satisfy the legal threshold prescribed on when the market must be opened for competition or the time when consumers can finally choose their power suppliers.

With higher level of privatization, industry players see a more genuine competition in the power industry.

And this is the formula being awaited that may be able to eventually drive electricity prices down.

After the divestment of power assets, PSALM would need to act next on the privatization of the contracts with the independent power producers (IPPs) as this serves to be another pre-condition for open access.

PSALM has sought the assistance of the World Bank to draw up a feasible package to be employed for the privatization of the IPP contracts.

Milo is marathon success for Nestlé

CORPORATE Social Responsibility—now the fashionable mantra on the global corporate arena—comes in many commendable guises. And here in the Philippines one leading multinational has chosen to display its CSR credentials by promoting a healthy lifestyle for everyone.

We are talking of the National Milo Marathon that for over three decades has been continuing a great tradition of giving Filipino families the opportunity to enjoy healthy living through outdoor pursuits such as running.

This year’s edition of the annual marathon (the Milo brand is part of the Swiss diary giant Nestlé) will most definitely be a national event because it will be staged in 25 cities nationwide—with four races to be staged simultaneously in Manila, Tarlac, Cebu and Davao for the first time ever.

“Manila, Tarlac, Cebu and Davao are four of the cities that consistently attract a huge number of participants so we thought of staging our elimination races simultaneously to further highlight the healthy impact of the National Milo Marathon to as many people as possible,” says Nestlé AVP and Milo sports events executive Pat Goc-ong.

Adds says Nestlé AVP and Milo consumer marketing manager Michelle Calo-Alvarillo: “60,000 runners are expected to take part in the simultaneous races, which is a challenge that Milo is looking forward to. “We’re confident that the simultaneous staging will be warmly received by families and running enthusiasts everywhere.”

Besides Manila, Tarlac, Cebu and Davao, marathon action will also unfold in the Batangas, Palawan, Angeles, General Santos, Dumaguete, Bacolod, Iloilo, Roxas, Legazpi, Naga, San Pablo, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, San Fernando, Laoag, Santiago, Baguio, Dipolog, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro and Butuan.

Now on its 32nd year, the Milo Marathon is renowned as a landmark event in Philippine sports and is considered to be the country’s most awaited and most successful running competition. Through the years it has consistently played a key role in discovering the country’s best marathoners who have gone on to bring honor to the country.

The first Milo Marathon was held in 1974, with some 767 runners taking part in the event. Over the years, the event has got bigger and bigger with more participants eager to join and enjoy everything the event has to offer.

In 2007, the event attracted more than 150,000 participants, providing ample proof that it remains firmly entrenched as a relevant and significant sporting date in the country’s sports landscape.

The 32nd event will showcase the 3k kiddie run, 5k fun run, 10k run (Metro Manila leg), 21k half marathon for the provincial elimination races and 42.195k open Metro Manila elimination race and a 42.195k final race.

Complementing the races are other fun events like the biggest school delegation contest, the inter-school running team competition and the cheer dance competition, which will see action from college students to add further excitement.

Without doubt, the National Milo Marathon looks poised to continuing serving as a platform for those who desire to become runners of distinction and for those who want to reap the benefits of having a healthy and active lifestyle. And also provide a worthy example of how a corporate giant can fuse business with pleasure for the local community’s well being.

Here's a photo of Fort Victoria

http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m300/gors_iligan/fortvictoria.jpg
(Courtesy of the Iligan City Government Website)

this fort here in iligan is said to have been abandoned of funds during the Spanish times. In the journal, Philippine Studies, which I read at MSU IIT CASS Library, the fort should have been given more attention. It did not have enough budgetary allocations during its time, the number of ammos, the sentinels and the likes were discussed as lacking as what ive read on that journal. Perhaps i can go back to the library for more details about it.

Perhaps it is high time that our local government to focus on putting markers on the places where they once stood. It gives the Iliganon a retrospect of its past and then put some pictures of such just like the pic u posted here as well as a brief description of its history. Perhaps Councilor Joe Zalsos should first embark about it.

What NHI should have done instead for Iligan
By Rene Michael Baños

The National Historical Institute recently did Filipinos in general and Iliganons in particular, a disservice by shamelessly declaring the Macaraeg-Macapagal House a "heritage site" -- with the sitting president, no less, presiding over the farce.

Even the wildest stretches of imagination cannot compare the historicity of that house to a nearby site where the only Katipunan-led revolt in Mindanao occurred 107 years ago.

Si, amigos! If only NHI did its research in Iligan historical sites better (which I doubt very much they did with the Macaraeg-Macapagal house, which was more pressed to them), they would have been aware that not very far away lay the remnants of the Fuerza dela Nueva Victoria which, once verified (as I am sure it will) could change the way the present Philippine flag looks like.

Local historians believe government should fund further research into determining if there is a need to redesign the sun in the Philippine flag with nine instead of eight rays. As every grade school student knows, the eight rays of the sun in the Philippine tricolor stand for the eight provinces in Luzon which first rose in revolt against the Spanish colonizers in 1896.

But my good friend, columnist and local historian Antonio "Nono" J. Montalvan II says extant historical sources indicates there was one other Katipunan-led revolt in the islands which occurred during that same period in 1896 but which has not been recognized by Filipino historians.

"The Calaganan Mutiny" is detailed in the letters of Vicente Elio y Sanchez to the Manila-based Spanish newspaper La Oceania Española and two other historical sources but has never been linked to the "Cry of Balintawak" led by Andres Bonifacio. One reason for this could be that Elio's letters never got past Spanish censors anxious to douse the smoldering flames of revolution which had started smoking in Luzon.

The mutiny broke out in September 29, 1896 (Iliganons, take note of this date!) among the so-called Disciplinarios or conscripts consisting mostly of convicts from Luzon, who were pressed into battle against the Moros in Lanao. They raided the Spanish armory in Fort Nueva Victoria in Kalaganan (present day Balo-i, Lanao del Norte) and proceeded to Cagayan to attack the town, being joined by some Moros.

On the way, they ransacked convents and homes of Spanish peninsulars in
Manticao, Naawan, Initao, Alubijid and El Salvador, Molugan and Opol. However, a joint force of Spanish soldiers and Filipino Voluntarios (among of whom was Don Apolinar Velez of Cagayan de Misamis) repulsed them in Sta. Ana, Tagoloan.

http://heritage.************/views/map-mutiny_r1_c1.gifhttp://heritage.************/views/map-mutiny_r1_c2.gif
http://heritage.************/views/map-mutiny_r2_c1.gifhttp://heritage.************/views/map-mutiny_r2_c2.gif

Broad, red line shows possible path of Calaganan Mutiny. Extent of Bukidnon penetration is speculative.

Map is revised from Encarta World Atlas 1998.

From Cagayan, they proceeded to Bukidnon where they were joined by a band of natives. They next attacked Balingasag, and raided the outpost of Gingoog on January 1897. By that time, news of Rizal's execution had reached Cagayan and Misamis, and this further fanned the flames of the local Katipuneros. It took the Spanish gunboat Mariveles, recalled from the Tercio Distrito de Surigao, to subdue the resistance. This is the only known Katipunan revolt in the whole of Mindanao.

What appears to be remarkable about this particular mutiny is that besides happening barely a month after the Katipunan revolt in Luzon, there appears to be a direct link between it and the Katipunan revolt through a courier sent to Iligan with the object purpose of inciting the mutiny (Ruiz de Santa Eulalia, 1925).

Another version from the Jesuit historian Pastells contends that some Katipuneros captured from the Manila outbreak were deported to Iligan and it was this same group which instigated the Misamis rebellion (Schereurs translation, 1996).

Still another link was Pio Valenzuela, who was sent by Andres Bonifacio to see Jose Rizal in Dapitan and convince him to support and instigate a similar revolt in Mindanao. Valenzuela is believed to have made a side trip to Cagayan de Misamis (as Cagayan de Oro was then known) or at least sent contacts to see his first-degree cousin Baltazar Valenzuela of Lapasan, where he earlier migrated from Polo, Bulacan.

However, Montalvan cautions that a direct link between the Katipunan revolt in Luzon and the Calagan Mutiny have yet to be established "beyond a reasonable doubt" but there appears to be extant sources which appear to indicate that such a link did exist.

Another unique aspect of the revolt which merits attention at this particular time in Mindanao's history was the participation in it of Mindanao's tri-people: Christian immigrants, forty Bukidnon natives and Manobo baganis (or warriors) from Butuan, and ten Moros, making it not only a Katipunan revolt but one in which all three of Mindanao's tri-people was represented.

Montalvan concurs that should a direct link be established between Bonifacio's Katipunan revolt in Luzon and the Calaganan Mutiny, then the people of Mindanao can rightfully petition the national government to add a ninth ray to the sun in the Philippine flag.

What needs to be done at this point is to verify primary sources where the Calaganan Mutiny is described in detail, such as those found in the National Archives and other corroborative documents also found in various locations in Manila.

This, is what NHI should instead have done, rather than declaring the Macaraeg-Macapagal a historical heritage site without I am sure even a perfunctory evaluation of its historicity relative to other heritage sites nearby, such as the Fuerza de la Nueva Victoria in Balo-i.

I pray the tri-peoples of Mindanao, especially their historical and civic leaders, unite in petitioning NHI to further investigate the story of the Calaganan Mutiny. In the future, perhaps we can create a "Calaganan Mutiny historical trek" that would take Mindanaoans young and old through Balo-i; Manticao; Naawan; Initao; Alubijid; El Salvador; Molugan; Opol; Cagayan de Oro; Sta. Ana, Tagoloan; Bukidnon; Balingasag, and Gingoog.

As my Pilipino and Philippine History teachers used to say, "Ang hindi marunong lumingon sa pinanggalingan, hindi darating sa pinaroroonan."

What NHI should have done instead for Iligan
By Rene Michael Baños

http://images.shenining.multiply.com/image/5/photos/37/orig/5/4.jpg?et=2RZ7qta%2CuVMQJbKbmtQ%2BYA&nmid=40158508

Tinta Iligan Art Group Exhibit at MSU-IIT
February 19, 2008

It started last February 18, 2008 and end by February 22, 2008. The paintings are nice and I have my best pick and I’m on the process of buying it, the title is “Duyog” a Visayan term for “Musical Play”, a painting by a struggling and creative artist of Iligan, Eli Neri. It depict the wonderful culture of Higaonon tribe of Mindanao which is vanishing nowadays.

http://www.conchparadise.com/images/paradise/events/web/duyog.jpg

“Higaonon” are distributed in Las Nieves, Sinakungan, San Luis, Talacogon, Agusan del Sur, Buenavista, Carmen, Butuan City, in the Province of Agusan del Norte, Magsaysay, Gingoog City, Salay, Balingasag, Medina, Claveria, Cagayan de Oro, Opol, Manticao, Naawan, Initao, in Misamis Oriental, Manolo Fortich, Impasug-ong, Baungon, Talakag, Libona, Malitbog, Malaybalay, Cabanglasan, Lantapan, and Valencia in Bukidnon Province, Iligan in Lanao del Norte and Camiguin.

Written accounts suggest that the term HIGAONON is a combination of the root words:
‘HIGA’ which means ‘to live ‘ or to reside’ or ‘to lay in bed’;
‘GAON’ which means ‘mountain’; and
ONON which means ‘people’.
Thus people who live in the Mountains - our Higaonon spiritual leaders and scholars - defined as “People in the Living Mountains”.

DOH introduces 4-S to fight dengue

Cagayan de Oro City (20 February) -- The National Center for Health Promotion, National Center for Disease Prevention and Control of the Department of Health (DOH (http://www.doh.gov.ph/)) has introduced the FOURmula (4-S) for health against Dengue.

In an interview at PIA's radio program with Dr. Livey Villarin, City Health Officer of Iligan, he said that they have conducted the 4-S advocacy to the 44 barangays, a health advisory to prevent the occurrence of dengue hemorrhagic fever, an acute infectious disease manifested initially with fever.

Aedes aegypti, the transmitter of the disease, is a day-biting mosquito which lay eggs in clear and stagnant water found in flower vases, cans, rain barrels, old rubber tires. The adult mosquitoes rest in dark places of the house.

The 4-S stands for Search and Destroy, Self-protection Measures, Seek Early Consultation, and Say No to Indiscriminate Fogging.

Villaren meted out, to search and destroy is to collect and dispose all unusable tin cans, jars, bottles and other items that can collect and hold water. Clean gutters of leaves and debris so that rain water will not collect as breeding places of mosquitoes. Old tires used as roof support should be punctured or cut to avoid accumulation of water.

Self-protection measures require clothing to cover oneself, and use of repellent to get rid of mosquitoes.

Seek early consultation due to the following signs and symptoms felt by the person bitten by the said mosquito like the sudden onset of high fever which may last 2 to 7 days, skin rashes and red tiny spots on the skin, nose bleeding when fever starts to subside, abdominal pain, dark-colored stools, joint & muscle pain and pain behind the eyes, vomiting of coffee-colored matter, and dark-colored stools.

The last S to consider is Say No to indiscriminate fogging. We recommend fogging, should there be a dengue outbreak only, said Villarin. Fogging is expensive using diesel and gasoline fuel to operate the machine.

The weather is unpredictable, thus, we focus our campaign on 4-S to all schools, victims of this disease are mostly children, Villarin said.

We have not encountered any dengue cases for the last three years in Iligan, this is because we have intensified our campaign on preventive measures against dengue in coordination with the barangay officials, added Villarin. (lvgabule-PIA Iligan)

Educational History
The First Schools in Iligan

ST. MICHAEL'S COLLEGE (SMC)

It is known as the oldest school in the Lanao area founded as a catechetical center was back in 1914 by Fr. Felic Cordova, S.J. and formally established in 1915 as Escuela de San Miguel in honor of the patron saint, St. Michael's the Archaingel. It was then the RVM sisters who were invited to teach. In 1928 complete elementary education was offered followed by the first high school classes in 1938. The name was changed to St. Michael's Academy and subsequently changed to St. Michael's College in 1952 after it attained full college status. In 1954, there was a change in policy where the boys were turned over to the Columban Fathers at St. Columban's Academy (now La Salle Academy) while the girls remained at St. Michael's College.

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/his2rypic/edited/4.jpg

LANAO CHUNG HUA SCHOOL

The Lanao Chinese School was established in 1938 through the efforts of the Chinese Chamber of Commerce headed by Sy Seng Chiok and Dy Tiao Lim. In its early beginnings, the school shared the same building with the Chinese Chamber of Commerce and the student population was only a little more than ten. Since most of the Chinese in Iligan hailed from Quemoy, China, the school hired a Quemoy scholar from the renowned Chip Bee University in China, as a principal. In 1951, the student population increases tremendously. So they built a new school at a new campus on B. Labao Extension in uptown Iligan. In 1970, the Philippine government amended its policy governing schools. It Filipinized all the private school in the country. Thus the Lanao Chinese Schools was renamed to Lanao Community School and accepted non-chinese students. Later it changed its name to Lanao Chung Hua School.

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/his2rypic/edited/5.jpg

MSU-ILIGAN ISTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY (MSU-IIT)

The history of the Institute goes back to 1946 with the establishment of the Iligan High School(IHS). In 1965, the HIS was converted into the Lanao Technical School (LTS) under the Bereau of Vocational Education. In 1965, RA 4626 converted LTS into the Northern Mindanao Institute of Technology (NMIT). However, this law (RA 4626) never got implemented. On July 12, 1968, RA No. 5363 integrated Lanao Technical School in the MSU System. During the 62nd meeting of the MSU System Board of Regents on March 12, 1975, the first comprehensive reorganizational plan for the Institute was approved under BOR Resolution No. 894, s.1975, This plan made the institute the first autonomous campus of the seven external units of the MSU System. Today, it is one of the four centers of Science and Technology in the country.

ST. PETER'S COLLEGE (SPC)

SPC was founded on February 10, 1952, by the late Mrs. Escolastica Punongbayan-Paguio. It started with barely 63 Education students in a rented building along Aguinaldo Street near the Old market. After four years from it founding, all classes on that rented building(along Aguinaldo St.) were moved to a new and bigger campus at Sabayle Street, where a two-storey structure was constructed to house the offices and classrooms. And through the years, additional buildings were put up and curricular program in Engineering were offered.

LA SALLE ACADEMY

In 1958, when Iligan City was still a part of the Prelature of Ozamis under Bishop Patrick Cronin, there was a dire need of priests to serve the prelates in Mindanao. The Columbian Fathers who were then running an exclusive school for boys ad to give up their school in favor of their priestly ministry. The Bishop invited the La Salle Brothers to take over St. Columban's Academy, which was then a remnant of the Woodrow Wilson Junior College whose campus is located along Consunji and Victoria Streets, Iligan City. Three American brothers namely: Bro. Richard Duerr, FSC; Bro Fidelis Leddy, FSC; and Bro. Raymund Jeffrey, FSC took over the school in June that year. The school moved to its new site in Pala-o and used the name La Salle Acad1emy in 1960. In 1973, the school became co-educational in fairness to girls in Iligan and Lanao who wished to avail themselves of the Lasallian education. Presently, aside from the regular day high school, a night high school education is offered(the cheapest in the city) in preference to the working youth who cannot afford to avail themselves education during the day. Lately, a technical vocational college is opened to cope with the growing demand for technicians in Iligan and Lanao.

ILIGAN CAPITOL COLLEGE (ICC)

Established in 1963 by the late Engr. Sesenio S. Rosales and Madame Laureana San Pedro Rosales (the incumbent Chair of the Board of Trustees and concurrently College President and Chief Executive Officer), the Iligan Capitol College is a private, nosectarian school. From its humble beginnings of two simple wooden structures which housed the classrooms and offices, the Iligan Capitol College today prides of having three imposing concrete structures on a seven thousand square meter campus. It was the first to open the curricular program in Midwifery and Maritime Science in Region XII and is presently offering curricular program in Computer Engineering.

Falls hopping

May bagong paborito ngayon ang mga gimikero: Ito ang “falls hopping" o ang pamamasyal sa iba’t-ibang falls o talon. Nauuso ngayon ang sports na ito sa mga mountaineers.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/kap1.jpg

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/kap2.jpg
