Instead gagawin na lang Government Center ( to house the national Offices). Ito rin ang proposed site for the planned City Sports Stadium. Ang lot na ito ay kasalukuyang pagmamay-ari na ng Local Government. :ohno:

From Wiki: Pads of curled brown coir fibre, made by needle-felting (a machine technique that mats the fibres together) are shaped and cut to fill mattresses and for use in erosion control on river banks and hillsides.

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines -- An accident inside the Kibawe, Bukidnon substation of the National Transmission Corp (Transco) triggered a power outage in Mindanao Friday afternoon.

Based on information coming from the Transco office here, a drop wire at the Kibawe substation suddenly snapped and tripped power breakers around 3:30 p.m.

The power outage affected the areas of Southeastern Mindanao, including Davao City, and Southwestern Mindanao, which includes General Santos City.

Transco said repair crew had already been sent to the substation and power could be restored before Friday evening.

Pinakurat: Vinegar that surprises

By Rex Ortega
Mindanao Bureau
First Posted 20:58:00 02/23/2008

ILIGAN CITY -- How a homegrown food processing family business is taking the whole country and soon, the rest of the world by surprise is a story that parallels a local businessman’s gut-feel of what people needed at the right time.

Pinakurat is the now famous brand of vinegar made in Iligan City. And there seems no stopping its growing fame because it has not only become the must-have pasalubong from visitors of this city of waterfalls, but it is the most in demand padala to Filipinos abroad.

“We dispense of it here with a teaspoon,” says Dr. Roberto F. Godinez, a Filipino turned US citizen working in San Francisco, California. “That’s how precious it is here.”

Given how gastronomically nostalgic Godinez gets, he cannot help but ask how he can get more of the sukang Pinakurat. So do thousands of other Filipinos living abroad who have heard of it. The lucky few who had managed to get a taste of it when they vacationed home bought boxes of sukang Pinakurat to bring as pasalubong but they had the misfortune of having their precious cargo severely cut down to size by airport authorities.

Clearly, the demand for Pinakurat is there that its maker, Green Gold Gourmet, is swamped with orders. People cannot seem to do without it on their dining tables.

Sukang Pinakurat is that spicy vinegar made from fermented coconut nectar and spices grown in the farmlands of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte. Its mercuric rise to the top of the condiment and dip business owes primarily to the fact that it takes over one’s taste buds and gives the pulutan or any food that needed zzzing!

Sukang Pinakurat was born out of desperation eight years ago when life dealt former Iligan restaurateur, Rene Jose Stuart del Rosario, 54, a double whammy—his restaurant business closed and his health failed.

The decline of Stuart del Rosario’s health is attributed by some to his indulgence of a famous local dish called pinakurat, which is made of chopped baboy sulop (wild boar meat) soused in vinegar and spices. Penniless and sick, he went to Manila to get a heart by-pass operation as an indigent patient.

After a successful operation, Stuart del Rosario returned home with what was left of the already meager funds donated to him by concerned relatives and friends. With wife Donna, 51, and four sons to support, Stuart del Rosario was at the lowest point of his life.

The term ‘pinakurat’

Linguistics Professor at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), Dr. Luvizminda Cagas de la Cruz, says “pinakurat” is an affixation of the Sebuano (correct spelling instead of “Cebuano” according to language scholars) root word “kurat.” “Kurat,” according to De la Cruz, means surprise. Thus, “pinakurat” means in a sudden or surprising manner as to shock the person.

“Since the taste of the vinegar mixed with the spices was very similar to that used in the pinakurat dish, we decided to name our product after it,” explained Stuart del Rosario. And sure enough, sukang Pinakurat’s taste took everyone by surprise. “Papawisan ka sa sarap” (you’ll break out into a sweat from its spiciness) so the ad goes.

Because of the undeniable success of sukang Pinakurat, Green Gold Gourmet will now move from a micro cottage industry status to either small or medium enterprise in an effort to cope with the public demand.

Green Gold Gourmet’s response to this public demand of a famous product spawned 14 other creations to date, among them: Suka Waykurat (the milder version of sukang Pinakurat); Kuratsoy (Pinakurat blended with soy sauce and calamansi); Sweetened Pinakurat; Chigar (chili garlic sauce); Naprik (spicy pork alamang); Kulikot (flaming-hot chili pepper sauce); Pure Suka Tuba; Garlic Chips; and Garlic Crunch.

500 farmers benefit

The sukang Pinakurat indirectly provides 500 jobs to farmers who supply the coco nectar and spices from the different farmlands in and around Iligan.

Acccording to Stuart del Rosario’s son, Rene “Peppo” Jr., who now manages the family business, they plan to ship the sukang Pinakurat to Australia, Canada and parts of the United States.

“Westerners are adapting to the taste. To them it is exotic,” he says.

There are also plans to export the family products to the Middle East as soon as Green Gold Gourmet gets its halal certification.

But all the talk of exporting is overshadowed by the fact that the company has yet to receive its license to operate and its certificate of product registry from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD). Peppo though is confident they will get the license to operate very soon.

“We are actually just waiting for it to be issued by the end of the month,” he says. “The BFAD already inspected our production facilities and was satisfied,” he adds.

The BFAD approval is important to Green Gold Gourmet because it is the only thing preventing it from realizing the product potential of sukang Pinakurat.

Already, notable giants in the retail industry in the Philippines like Shoemart (SM), Mercury Drug, 7/11 and Rustan’s have signified their intentions to carry the Pinakurat as part of their in-house brand lines.

Today, Green Gold Gourmet’s products can be found in stores in Metro Manila, and the cities of Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Iligan.

“But who knows, maybe very soon, makurat ka (you’ll be surprised) to find our products in your favorite mall or the sari-sari store,” Peppo says.

2008 mine deals seen to rack up P11.6B in sales

By Amy R. Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 18:40:00 02/24/2008

THE PHILIPPINES may find itself on the mining map once key mineral projects become operational early next year.

Production from seven priority projects alone are projected to have a total sales value of $291 million or P11.6 billion in 2008, and $670 million or P26.8 billion in 2009.

"We are setting up mechanisms for more efficient processing to hasten ... these mining investments," said Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Lito Atienza.

According to Atienza, 2008 is a critical year for the industry as several major mining firms are expected to move on from the construction and development stage, and start actual production.

Projects now in the development stage are Carmen Copper Corp.'s Toledo copper project in Cebu, production of which is projected to have a combined sales value of $19.52 million in 2008; OceanaGold's Didipio copper-gold project, $15.94 million; Palawan HPAL Nickel Project Line 2, $18.56 million; Filminera Masbate gold project, $43.27 million; Iligan Ferronickel Smelter Plant, $140.32 million; Manticao Ferronickel smelter plant, $40.86 million; and the Philsaga gold project, $12.24 million.

Currently, there are 10 projects that are in the operating and expansion stage.

According to the World Bank, a country can be considered a mining country if its mineral and mineral product shipments contribute at least 6 percent to total exports.

The DENR hopes to raise to 6 percent the contribution of the mining industry to the country's total exports once the projects are in place by 2009.

Last year, exports of minerals and mineral products had reached $2.37 billion, contributing 4.8 percent to total exports.

Phividec zone operations unaffected (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW022608/content.php?id=055)

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Operations of industries and manufacturing plants in the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor, specifically the Phividec industrial estate, have remained normal despite poor weather conditions affecting Northern Mindanao.

Heavy rains and landslides these past two weeks have caused deaths and loss of properties in nearby Lanao del Norte, where half of the region’s industrial corridor is located. Although Gingoog city on the eastern part of this city was also badly affected by heavy rains, the nearby towns of Tagoloan and Villanueva here in Misamis Oriental are in stable weather condition, Phividec officials said.

"Business operation here is normal," said Hyessa Suegai, chief for business development division of Phividec Industrial Authority, which runs the Phividec Industrial Estate. "We have not received reports of damaged properties or transactions affected because of the heavy rains."

The towns of Villanueva and Tagoloan host the industrial estate where big industrial complexes such as Mindanao coal-fired power plant operate. The $2-billion Hanjin shipbuilding complex will also be built within Phividec.

The regional office of the Trade and Industry department earlier noted they have yet to hear of damage on firms operating within the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor. While Phividec is on the eastern side of the region’s industrial belt, manufacturing plants in Lanao del Norte’s Iligan City, including that of Global Steel, comprise the western part of the corridor.

An update of Lanao del Norte’s damage report cited roads and bridges destroyed. Officials said they have yet to ascertain the extent of the damage on crops and farms. In Lala town of Lanao del Norte, eight houses were destroyed and another eight damaged, said Federeza Samson, provincial welfare officer-in-charge. — Geefe P. Alba

There's only one Great Rule in Photography
Feb 26, '08 7:22 AM

There's only one Great Rule in Photography and that is

"Your Photos should convey message"

Im writing this Blog because i want to Share to all of you, the words that ive learned from two master photographer: BOBBY TIMONERA AND JAY TABLANTE

Last Friday we went to ILIGAN CITY with some of my photographer-friends since one of my friend(PANCHO) was invited by BOBBY TEMONERA.

Some of you might know him already. saw his works in the frontpage of INQUIRER, NEWSWEEK or in any publication here in philippines or international..
Yes Sir BOBBY is a photojournalist...

IVE NEVER TOUGHT that my most favorite street photograph is shot by Bobby Temonera. i saw this picture in the manila bulletten last year. a photo of two kids sleeping in the street.and imagine how creative and brilliant this Photojournalist in his composition of the photograph below.

http://images.dustein.multiply.com/image/2/photos/upload/600x600/R8P6FAoKCoAAAG6xA5k1/11-4.jpg?et=BvfyyPJFKuxA9Hg9pSpDJw&nmid=

this was the actual photos of Sir BOBBY TIMONERAS taken by JIVA jimenez
Printed using Darkroom...

and he trowed us his secrets: "Learn the techniques and then Go out and shoot dont give most of ur time in technicalities."the most important is that your Fotos should speak to its viewers, should conveys message"
this are words from a photojournalist who was one hide from the militaries just because of one picture that shows a firing quad in mindanao which insulted the militaries because they did nothing to stop the execution" during 90's

From Photojournalism To Fashion Photography

Jay Tablante is one of the photographer that i admire when it comes to fashion photography
I can define his works with: excellent lighting

almost everyday i am talking and learning from him through Yahoo messenger
She is a very good critique'r to my work and so far only one of my photos got a good but not so good SCORE from him. THE FOTO BELOW

http://images.dustein.multiply.com/image/2/photos/upload/600x600/R8QETAoKCoAAAEJUuTs1/98fa84b47b381af9.jpg?et=%2Cgtp3z3wRsyt4ENdiGBWEA&nmid=

Recently after his shoot with Doc Pecjo(Fahsion photographer also) he realized that photography is not all about technicals of lighting..."but its all about immersing yourself into your subject"

"As much as good lighting does give a good photograph, the main point of contact between the viewer and shot is the subject. " JAY TABLANTE

I know jay tablante style verymuch... a style that has very good lighting.. sometimes his telling me his using 12 strobes in a set-up....imagine?
for me 2strobes is enough and more than that is complicated.
but for jay its easy as eating pop corn
that is how jay tablante master's the lighting style..

but now reading beyond the lines from his journal (http://jaytablante.deviantart.com/journal/17049868/#comments)
he is focusing himself not on the technical lighting anymore but on his subject
and i saw some of his new fashion photographs..and i can sense a dynamic movement of his models.(which is really-really great)

ttp://jaytablante.deviantart.com

its been always in my mind that everytime i shot i should capture the emotions of my subject and it should conveys to the viewer...yes it is very difficult....
difficult as doing a lighting set up..

last saturday i was talking to jay tablante...he advised me not to complicate my lighting make it simple and focus more on the model...
and he even challenged me to shoot a GUY because he notice that im shooting most of the time GIRLS// ahehehhehe

to end this blog...we should always remember that a good picture is NOT ALWAYS good in technical lighting but a good picture should convey to your viewer,

Pinakurat: Vinegar that surprises

By Rex Ortega

First Posted 20:58:00 02/23/2008

ILIGAN CITY -- How a homegrown food processing family business is taking the whole country and soon, the rest of the world by surprise is a story that parallels a local businessman’s gut-feel of what people needed at the right time.

Pinakurat is the now famous brand of vinegar made in Iligan City. And there seems no stopping its growing fame because it has not only become the must-have pasalubong from visitors of this city of waterfalls, but it is the most in demand padala to Filipinos abroad...

The abundance of life can be felt by what one sees and Photography is there to at least freeze in time what otherwise will be lost forever and remain unseen. It has been said that "In the bend of time, a moment lost is lost forever".

Can't believed Im saying that. Im a founding member and currently secretary of HULAGWAY an Iligan City based Photography Club (well, the Azywerks principle of no choice pretty works here again, duh). I meant that well. Serious

I was a commodity futures trader (right, once a cute metrosexual in Makati) later doing Med-Rep tingies before I ended up as a Consultant to various LGU's and doing Franchise dev. But uh-uh, behind my sexiness (take a bow) is a true weekend outdoor adventurer and explorer (Ok many souls would want to stay in the office and earn bucks even on weekends. Losers...).

Also a founding member of CLIMB (Lanao Mountain-biking Club, dunno what gen coz I think the club was and is being resurrected for nth time), tried rock-climbing until Ben2x (Simon Outdoor shop), Koking (boy, one great rigger), Dodong (hope this guy's climbing mountains in the US now) decided to abandon the Pugaan crags, just in time when i completed buying my gears.

I briefly went into scuba diving, but was found sticked for many years with Pro-Gun's and was often involved in firearms training and organizing shooting competitions. Please I don't advocate IPSC, only IDPA.

To mention a few, The Sanghaya Class Shooting Competition at Camp Evangelista, the NBI-NEMRO Friendlies at Camp Pintoy and yes, in Balo-i Where the Marines with my friend Lieutenant Yncierto put up a good team against Team Defender of IPSC with Monsi Jemar, Walter Uy, Lando Orbe atbp.. This type of shooting is expensive. It destroys target, not preserve them.

Of course, photography was not left out. There was the Lanao Lake and Mosques Competition judged by Bobby Timonera, Christian Aguado, Robert Booc and yes, Benette Tan who cant believed i paid them for judging, yep, without the strings. Honest.

There was the highly budgeted entry to DOT-WOW tourism project that brought us to pristine areas of Lanao for 15 days with CCM asia crew. Our Governor was surprised to have seen the work, of all places, in San Francisco, US of A. It brought me talking to a lot of people explaining that in our part of Mindanao, (huhumm) there's no Abu Sayaff (not yet) and at the same breath telling them they cannot visit it without armed escorts. Political talent.

And yes in 2007, I managed squeezing in between work and Manila training, the Iligan Procession Photo Contest and the Kasadya Photo contest (with Iligan jaycees).

Nah, I don't make my money with weddings.

An explorer by design (not by the heart for all measure, remember what old folks say to people who were always afraid of the dark? Ok, ok, the heights and the forest I know), but gee, i made Mount Apo my first climb way back in high school (he he he, it helped that i happen to live in Kidapawan City which owned the other half of that giant mount). And yes, the rest as they say was history. I mean me, coz that was also the last mountain I climbed. Joke. Yes, Pulag was great and so was Mt High Peak, Mt Lumot (gee, the wind must have downed flight 387). Stop counting, I dreamed of spending spring 2009 at the Shang Complex in Tibet err, China.

Like many traditional mountaineer (none the like of extreme adventure racer, that type of person who conquer mountain and not really being there, who can aptly describe the forest but never the trees? Ok, peace here), photography is one art that will naturally grow as a way of capturing natural wonders, preserving drama and more importantly, to take pictures that tell stories not only of being physically and emotionally there, but with the same mindset that allowed us to see the past through photographs. Duh, I feel old. Hopeless romantic.

So from kodak instamatic, to minolta, to nokias and now DSLRs, I hope to take more photos that will tell many (life) stories. Cute eh? I copied that from a third grader.

the scene

ACCORDING to Ludabi diehard, Manuel Lino Faelnar, Ludabi means Lubas Sa Daghang Bisaya. Lubas is the “core of the wood”; dagang is a quail feather. Plumna in Spanish means pen. So it’s the core of Visayan pen or Core of Visayan writers.

Cebu was the scene of the 52nd Ludabi Convention held at the Casino Espańol recently, with approximately 100 delegates from all over. Iligan-15; Cagayan de Oro-10; Ormoc-10; Tagbilaran-5; with the balance from Cebu, Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu cities; Carcar, Cordova, Dalaguete and Argao.

The numbers surprised even the organizers, especially president Alex Abadinas.

Very supportive were the Sitoy men; Adelino and Arleigh as they welcomed the resource persons; doctors Erlinda Alburo, Jess Tirol, Vicente Isles and lawyer Manuel Lino Faelnar, whose lovely and talented writer daughter Suzanne F. Camara was recording the proceedings on her high-tech camera!

Global Steel may go into iron, nickel mining, readies $1.6B

By Amy R. Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 23:42:00 02/27/2008

MANILA, Philippines -- Steel maker Global Steel Philippines is considering investing in iron, nickel mining, with initial an investment of possibly $1.6 billion, Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Joselito Atienza said.

“Global Steel wants to mine for these minerals to locally supply raw materials to its planned integrated steel plant in the country,” Atienza said in an interview.

Indian-owned Global Steel, formerly the government-owned National Steel Corp., earlier announced it was preparing to build an integrated steel plant that would make the Philippines self-sufficient in steel.

The company has not started exploring and is still looking for potential areas rich in iron ore and nickel. Atienza said. He said its interest in mining went only as far as ensuring supply of iron and nickel before putting up an integrated plant.

He added that Global Steel was also interested in putting up an integrated mill for stainless steel.

The two steel mills would require a combined investment of as much as $4 billion, he said.

“We hope Global Steel pushes through with its plans, as these investments are heavier and would therefore also have greater benefits to Filipinos, in terms of employment, for example,” said Atienza, a former mayor of Manila.

According to information from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, there are no identified sites for iron mining in the Philippines.

Among companies that have been awarded Mineral Production Sharing Agreements, only five have included iron on their lists of potential ores to be mined in their respective areas.

Global Steel’s plant in the southern city of Iligan is currently under the management of Global Ispat Holdings Ltd., one of the worlds biggest steel producers.

With integrated facilities, the Iligan plant operates hot rolling, cold rolling and tinning lines capable of producing more than two million tons of steel a year.

Atienza also said another company had expressed interest in putting up an integrated steel mill in the Philippines.

He said no official commitments had been made to date but Pohang Iron and Steel Co. of south Korea had begun scouting for potential site areas, particularly in the Surigao southern provinces.

Pohang is the third-largest steel producer in the world, operating two steel mills in South Korea. Edited by INQUIRER.net

Super-Region projects in Normin underway
by Babes J. Rebultan

Cagayan de Oro City (28 February) -- Implementation of four flagship projects under President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's "Super Regions" development strategy for Northern Mindanao is underway and currently in various stages of completion.

The full completion of these infrastructure development projects in 2010-2011 is expected to boost the agri-business potentials of Northern Mindanao, and the entire Mindanao Super Region, as a whole.

http://www.pia.gov.ph/press/image/080228-r10-superregions.jpg

This was revealed today by Presidential Assistant for Northern Mindanao Pacifico T. Pupos Jr. and Assistant Regional Director Ro-Ann A. Bacal of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA-10) during the "PIA Mobile Talakayan on Super Regions" media forum conducted by the Philippine Information Agency in Cagayan de Oro City.

Topping the list is the P7.853-billion Laguindingan International Airport Development Project in Misamis Oriental.

Bacal said bidding for the airport's civil works is on-going and a contract was signed between the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), the implementing agency, and Yosshin Engineering for consultancy services on the construction supervision last December 2007.

She said all lands to be used for access roads are already acquired, while about 75 percent of properties located at the proposed main airport site are also secured.

PA Pupos said the Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, a Korean company, will start construction of the runway soon.

Projected for completion in November 2011, the airport is expected to cater to international and domestic flights, boosting the region's capacity for added investments, Pupos and Bacal said.

The other three Super Region infrastructure development projects being implemented in Northern Mindanao are the P173-million Ozamiz City Airport Development Project in Misamis Occidental, the P572.87-million Cagayan de Oro Port Development Project, and the P2.670-billion Panguil Bay Bridge Project in Misamis Occidental.

According to the January 2008 "Status of Mindanao Super Region Projects" prepared by the Mindanao Economic and Development Council (MEDCo), five other "Super Region" projects were added recently.

These are the P861-million Iligan City Circumferential Road in Lanao del Norte; the P12.731-million Lanao del Norte Provincial Hospital; Jatropha Nurseries in Bukidnon; the P1.682-billion Agus 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant in Pantas, Lanao del Norte; and the P1.856-billion Agus 6 Hydroelectric Power Plant Uprating Project in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.

ARD Bacal said the Super Region concept of development was announced by President Arroyo during her 2006 State of the Nation Address, declaring the need to enhance the nationwide delivery of infrastructure support and social services.

It is called "Super Region" because it goes beyond the confines of the regular regions and involves two or more regions like in the case of the Cyber Corridor, which embraces the whole country, she further said.

Bacal said these five Super Regions are the North Luzon Agri-Business Quadrangle, Central Luzon Urban Beltway, tourism-focused Central Philippines, Mindanao Agri-Business, and Cyber Corridor.

She said President Arroyo committed to set aside P1 trillion for the development of the Super Regions from 2006 to 2010.

In Mindanao, Bacal added, all NEDA regional offices and Regional Development Councils have identified priority projects aligned to the Super Region development strategy.

These include major road networks, farm-to-market roads, small irrigation projects, power development, and improvement of air and seaports.

PA Pupos said President Arroyo promised 30 percent of the budget on agriculture be allotted to Mindanao to develop its agri-business potentials. (PIA-MisOrOccCam)

INQUIRER.net (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20080227-121607/Global-Steel-may-go-into-iron-nickel-mining-readies-16B)

So there will be an additional $2.4B from the initial $1.6B investment needed to build the integrated steel plant. Cooooooooooooool. However, the company aint pouring in money unless the supply of iron ore and nickel is ensured. How long does it take to look for those potential areas? Hopefully, the construction will commence this year.

Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura congratulates Ms. Virginia Neri Nadayag, Head Teacher of Iligan City East High School-Kiwalan Annex after signing the grant contract for the Project for Construction of One-Storey Eight-Classroom Building at the Embassy of Japan on February 20, 2008. Witnessing the ceremony are Economic Section First Secretary Shinichi Kakui (extreme left) and local officials of Barangay Kiwalan, Iligan City.

Japanese Ambassador Makoto Katsura and Iligan City East High School-Kiwalan Annex Head Teacher Ms. Virginia Neri- Nadayag signed the grant contract for “The Project for Construction of One-Storey Eight Classroom Building” in Iligan City at the Embassy of Japan on February 20, 2008. Amounting up to US$85,951, the project was funded through the Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP) under Japan’s Official Development Assistance (ODA).

Iligan City East High School(ICEHS)-Kiwalan Annex is presently located in an old damaged barangay gymnasium, with perforated roofing, dripping ceilings and large wall cracks. In 2006, Iligan City Engineering and City Fire Departments, which rated this building as hazardous and unsafe for any type of activity, recommended immediate relocation of the school facilities. Despite the threats and dangers this presents to students, the school is still crowded with quite a big number of enrollees every year.

With the project, the ICEHS-Kiwalan Annex’s aspiration to a secure and decent environment for its 650 students will be achieved. The one-storey eight-classroom school building to be constructed will enhance the environment conducive for learning.

The GGP of the Embassy of Japan was launched in the Philippines in 1989 for the purpose of reducing poverty and helping various communities engaged in grassroots activities. Since then, a total of 387 small-scale grassroots projects – ranging in cost from roughly PhP 1 to 4 million – have been implemented by NGOs, local government units, and other non-profit organizations.

Bukidnon to Iligan and back (http://istambay.wordpress.com/2008/02/24/bukidnon-to-iligan-and-back/#more-1254)
February 24, 2008 by mindanaw

After months of planning and preparation, the proposed training on Basic Journalism with Iligan City-based Civil Society Organization - Forum for Peace (CSOFP) was finally done.

We conducted the training on February 22 to 23 at the Redemptorist Compound in Brgy. San Miguel, Iligan City.

It was conducted under the Grassroots Documentation and Reporting Training arm of the Mindanao News and Information Cooperative Center, the group running MindaNews.

The engagement provided opportunity for me to travel, again, to another city in Mindanao for GDRT. It’s the fifth grassroots training engagement which I helped facilitate after that in Upi, Maguindanao (now in Shariff Kabungsuan); Caraga, Davao Oriental; Tandag, Surigao del Sur; GSIS Heights, Matina, Davao City.

We gave basic training workshops on News writing, Feature writing, preparing press statements and basic photography.

There were about 30 participants in the training representing non-government organizations and peoples organizations in Iligan City, Marawi City, Lanao del Norte and Lanao deo Sur.

The trip served as a breather for me from the “provincial” confines of Bukidnon. I traveled by bus from Malaybalay City to Cagayan de Oro late afternoon on Feb. 21.

To divert my attention on the transfer from the East bound to the West bound terminals (CDO style), I dropped by the new SunStar Cagayan de Oro editor-in-chief, Froilan Gallardo. Froi was preparing to close the night’s paper when I dropped by over coffee.

I was glad to share a brief chat with my MindaNews colleague, who was my housemate in Davao City. I heard he has transformed SunStar’s copy and is doing a good job there.

I took a two-hour bus ride from CDO to Iligan near midnight and arrived at the “City of waterfalls” past 2a.m.

I was ready to sleep for the 9a.m. start of the training the following day. But apparently, my reservation at the city’s new Famous Inn was canceled. I ended up staying in a spartan room of a humble lodging house sans the convenience of a private bathroom and air-conditioning.

I called it “back to basics” hotel accommodation in a city as interesting as Iligan.

Anyway, I had a good sleep and realized that just like at home, I don’t have a bathroom and air-conditioning in our room

As far as I’m concerned, the training went well with Bobby T. and Rex O. giving the other modules.

I was glad to have shared some of my knowledge and skills to the participants. By the way, among those I shared in the sidelines is the opportunity for the young participants to put up their own personal and organizational blogs.

Looking forward to the next engagement.

Mining investments in RP to surge in two years (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/mar/01/yehey/business/20080301bus3.html)
By Likha C. Cuevas-Miel, Reporter

The investments in the local mining industry is seen to surge within the next two years as several priority projects would advance into production, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources announced on Thursday.

The Philippines may hit $1.8 billion in projected investments as seven of the 63 priority projects would proceed into production by 2009, Horacio C. Ramos, DENR director for mines and geo-sciences bureau, said during the initial public offering seminar for mining.

The mining projects include Carmen-Toledo copper, Dipidio copper-gold, Palawan HPAL nickel (line 2) and Filminera Masbate gold. Also on the list are Iligan Ferronickel smelter plant, Manticao Ferronickel smelter plant and Philippine Saga gold.

The total investments poured into these projects are estimated to reach $670 million, or P26.8 billion, on top of the $892 million projected for this year. Ramos said additional funds coming into the industry could easily reach $10.4 billion after four years as the demand for previous and base metals would continue to grow.

About 10 of those priority projects would be in the production stage by 2011 while 8 would be in the construction and development phase, another 8 in the feasibility and financing stage and 9 would advance to exploration stage, DENR data showed.

Last year, the local mining industry posted a gross production value of P95 billion, 22 percent higher year on year due to the increase in metal prices that is mainly fueled by the need to feed the growing industries of Korea, India and China.

The environment department projects that the country would be able to reach “mining country” status in the next few years when mining exports have already reached 6.15 percent of total exports, as defined by the World Bank. Three years ago, mining contributed about 2 percent of total exports and then grew to 4.5 percent and 4.8 percent, respectively, in 2006 and 2007.

Patrick Loftus-Hill, UBS AG chief for natural resources in Asia, said the global commodities sector—especially copper, aluminum and zinc—would remain “incredibly” profitable until 2016 with demand from China alone seen to grow by 8 percent to 10 percent.

He said the traditional sources of these commodities would soon be running out of supply and the Philippines should now seize this opportunity by obtaining or increasing investments for bankrolling projects since the country is sitting on vast reserves of copper.

There is now a renewed interest in the mining sector in tapping the local equities market for raising capital, Benjamin Philip G. Romualdez, Chamber of Mines of the Philippines president, said. To help mining firms gain access to the equities market, the chamber, the local bourse, and several stakeholders in the industry, are now threshing out concrete guidelines to pave way for a transparent investment environment.

Among these is the need to sort out which firms are exploratory in nature that are considered as highly speculative investments and those that are already in the production, which are seen as “more stable”. Also in the works is the implementation of the Philippine Mineral Reportorial Code slated within the first quarter this year.

WoW!!!

@jcbroken, may i request for you to take some pics of the on-going activities at the lot in-front of Pensionne de Patria. If my source is correct in saying that there will be an arcade that will rise there soon, then this will be a very welcome development in this part of Pala-o. Accordingly, Teepoy's Grille will be transfered here once the arcade is finished.

Iligan, Makati educators win awards for innovative teachers

MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines--Fedelyn Gomez, a high school teacher at the Tomas Cabili National High School in Iligan City, recalled the days leading to the moment she received a coveted award for most innovative teachers in the country.

"I cried because I almost did not make it to the contest," she said, explaining that a blackout had affected the submission of some requirements.

A teacher for 12 years who is currently teaching Makabayan (Civics), Gomez was ecstatic when Microsoft Philippines officials called out her name from among the 10 finalists.

Her winning lesson plan taught students important concepts in entrepreneurship. "The Wonders of One's Finger Tips" lesson plan required students to design a business plan for an animal production project. Their work was then published on the Web.

Gomez revealed that she missed the deadline for her graduate studies thesis, but was still thankful that she won the award.

Gomez's winning lesson plan was unique in this year's Innovative Teachers Leadership Awards (ITLA). Most of the finalists focused on science, math, and language subjects.

During her presentation to the judges, Gomez said she felt that she was not going to win the award. But it turned out that she was one of top three winners, along with Julius Hechanova, also a fellow teacher from Iligan City.

The third winner is Ma. Noemi Bagayaua, a five-year elementary teacher from Cembo Elementary School in Makati City who specializes in English.

Hechanova who just started teaching mathematics a month ago created a micro-lesson wherein students were asked to solve word problems in right triangle trigonometry. He used Microsoft's Powerpoint to present word problems with animated illustrations to better explain concepts.

Bagayaua, on the other hand, developed a literature-based interactive lesson to enhance the reading comprehension of Grade 6 pupils.

All three teachers said they did not expect to win. But they also admit that their victory was indication that they were on to something that was good and right.

Despite the lack of computers in the schools where the winning teachers are teaching, they still believe technology has provided them more tools to make lessons interesting.

"Also we don't cough a lot because we're no longer using chalk [when teaching]," quipped Hechanova.

Now on its fourth year, the ITLA gives recognition to teachers who develop ways to integrate information and communications technology in teaching and learning.

These teachers come from top 30 school division identified by Microsoft Philippines in its Potensyal program, which is also an initiative to identify the top school divisions in the country.

Participants in the ITLA are required to submit their digital portfolio through the Partners in Learning (PIL) online community, also of Microsoft. PIL is a global initiative for education.

All three top winners will go on to join the Microsoft Regional Innovative Teachers Conference in Vietnam in April.

Legend of the Falls: Majestic Maria Cristina Falls of Iligan City (http://www.photo.net.ph/blogalicious/2006/04/24/majestic-maria-cristina-falls-of-iligan-city/)
by : Victoria J Adeva

Once a upon a time, Lake Lanao in hands of Omaca-An, A giant monster, eating human beings and animals and even fishes in the water. There were thus a few people around the lake because of the monster that ate everything he saw. Many years passed when Rajah Indarapatra came with his beloved brother Rajah Solaiman. Rajah Solaiman was the first to come and he fought the giant but was killed. Rajah Indarapatra followed, looking for his brother Solaiman. Indarapatra encountered the giant Omaca-an and killed the giant man eater. On land, he looked for the ring of his brother by asking the small and b ig animals he met. On water, however, he went swwimming everyday and gathered both big and small stones beneath the water. He stayed for several years along the shores of the lake, but still he did not find the ring. He constructed an irrigation system that went very far and covered a big distance which later became a river (now the Agus River). The river had a portion which dropped down a deep ravine now the Maria Cristina Falls.

Many years passed, and there lived in Maria Cristina Falls two loving sisters, namely : Maria the younger and Cristina the elder. These two beautful ladies loved each other very much. Maria gace everything she had to Cristina, her beloved sister. Many People knew they were the ones living near the falls. They also loved their neighbor as they loved themselves. Datus and Sultans came to ask for their hands in marraige but the sister refused. There was a man, however, son of a prominent Sultan living somewhere beside the Lake Lanao. For many years he was unhappy because he could not find a suitable partner. He romaed around the lake until he saw the two maidens of the falls. He fell in love with the two sisters but the two sisters did not know whom he really loved. Many days passed and Maria dicovered that she loved him very much, which made her very sad and she went to the top of the falls and jumped. When Cristina found out the Maria was dead, she likewise went to the top of the falls and threw herself down the deep ravine. When the handsome young man discovered the situation and found the bodies, her burried them carefully under the falls. After the death of the two sisters, he never married until also died. He also named the falls, Maria Cristina after the two sister he loved.

Lanao sultanate in large-scale ‘malunggay’ farming (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/mar/04/yehey/prov/20080304pro5.html)

The 39 municipalities encompassing Lanao del Norte and Sur that forms part of the ancestral Lanao Sultanate lands will soon host the largest commercial malunggay plantation in the country.

Johanne Edward Labay, program and technical committee chairman of the Farmer’s Sectoral Council (FSC), said the Lanao sultanate’s area covering 39 municipalities will set aside 2,000 hectares for the contract growing of malunggay, of which the seeds will be bought by Secura International for the extraction of its oil.

Members of the FSC, a consultative body under the National Anti-Poverty Commission (NAPC), facilitated signing of the agreement between Secura and the representatives of the Lanao Sultanate, headed by Sultan Macaagal Limbobongan. The latter will chair the body formed to oversee the planting of malunggay in the said ancestral lands.

Sultan Ismael Pangcatan was appointed vice-chairman of the body, which has for its members Abdul Nasser Adiong and Aminda Marzok.

Secura Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Danilo Manayaga signed on the behalf of his company, which has a large requirement for malunggay seeds.

The agreement was signed in Manila during one of the basic sectors summit of the NAPC.

“We are very happy that members of the FSC who also form part of the Farmer Business Development Corp. successfully facilitated this contract growing agreement which will help develop parts of Muslim Mindanao,” Labay said.

Victorino Ujano and Romy Rubion of the FSC added that Christians and Muslims should unite in pursuing development in the countryside; because that is one of the ways the Philippines can achieve lasting peace.

Under the agreement, Secura will buy the dried malunggay seeds that will be harvested by the Muslim farmers involved in the project. The company will also provide the planting materials for free.

Secura is propagating the commercial planting of malunggay nationwide, which can help alleviate poverty in the countryside. It has undertaken studies on the use of malunggay for applications in food processing, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and biofuels.

In January, a team of Masters of Business Administration students from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recommended the commercial cultivation of malunggay nationwide because of its potential for biofuel production.

The foreign students said malung*gay-oil production could generate millions of jobs and help alleviate poverty in the rural communities.
