MC.

MAKATI CITY, Philippines--Two teachers from Iligan City, and one from Makati City won Microsoft Philippines' Innovative Teachers Leadership Awards. Fedelyn Gomez, Noemi Bagayaua, and Julius Hechanova went home with cash, a brand new laptop, and bragging rights. Video taken by INQUIRER.net reporter Erwin Oliva on February 29, 2008.

Iligan, Makati educators win awards for innovative teachers

MANDALUYONG CITY, Philippines--Fedelyn Gomez, a high school teacher at the Tomas Cabili National High School in Iligan City, recalled the days leading to the moment she received a coveted award for most innovative teachers in the country.

"I cried because I almost did not make it to the contest," she said, explaining that a blackout had affected the submission of some requirements.

A teacher for 12 years who is currently teaching Makabayan (Civics), Gomez was ecstatic when Microsoft Philippines officials called out her name from among the 10 finalists.

Her winning lesson plan taught students important concepts in entrepreneurship. "The Wonders of One's Finger Tips" lesson plan required students to design a business plan for an animal production project. Their work was then published on the Web.

Gomez revealed that she missed the deadline for her graduate studies thesis, but was still thankful that she won the award.

Gomez's winning lesson plan was unique in this year's Innovative Teachers Leadership Awards (ITLA). Most of the finalists focused on science, math, and language subjects.

During her presentation to the judges, Gomez said she felt that she was not going to win the award. But it turned out that she was one of top three winners, along with Julius Hechanova, also a fellow teacher from Iligan City.

The third winner is Ma. Noemi Bagayaua, a five-year elementary teacher from Cembo Elementary School in Makati City who specializes in English.

Hechanova who just started teaching mathematics a month ago created a micro-lesson wherein students were asked to solve word problems in right triangle trigonometry. He used Microsoft's Powerpoint to present word problems with animated illustrations to better explain concepts.

Bagayaua, on the other hand, developed a literature-based interactive lesson to enhance the reading comprehension of Grade 6 pupils.

All three teachers said they did not expect to win. But they also admit that their victory was indication that they were on to something that was good and right.

Despite the lack of computers in the schools where the winning teachers are teaching, they still believe technology has provided them more tools to make lessons interesting.

"Also we don't cough a lot because we're no longer using chalk [when teaching]," quipped Hechanova.

Now on its fourth year, the ITLA gives recognition to teachers who develop ways to integrate information and communications technology in teaching and learning.

These teachers come from top 30 school division identified by Microsoft Philippines in its Potensyal program, which is also an initiative to identify the top school divisions in the country.

Participants in the ITLA are required to submit their digital portfolio through the Partners in Learning (PIL) online community, also of Microsoft. PIL is a global initiative for education.

All three top winners will go on to join the Microsoft Regional Innovative Teachers Conference in Vietnam in April.

IMO their website looks much better than the Official Website of the Iligan City Government

^^I do agree with this comment. If and when the official website of the Iligan City Goverment is revised/upgraded, I hope they do it properly and fast. Sayang ang talent for such expertice available sa Iligan City. Also, would it be possible to get a news section on the website. If I remember it right, there once was a site where news was available everyday and in english pa. This was sometime 2002 - 2003.^^

DepEd, DOST, Intel train teachers for ICT

Philippines News Agency (PNA), March 4, 2008 Tuesday

The Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and other key academic institutions together with Intel Technology Philippines unveiled its report on two new programs piloted for teachers who were beginners in technology integration and those teaching information and communication technology (ICT).

Michel Wentling, Intel Philippines Managing director said, At Intel, corporate social responsibility means making our operations sustainable, strengthening our communities and improving lives through technology.

In their annual report that was released on Monday, the Intel Teach Getting Started and Intel Teach Skill for Success, pointed out that they have trained around 9,698 pre-service and in-service teachers were trained in 2007.

To date, 84,340 teachers have trained under Intel Teach.

It also said as an enhancement to Intel Teach in the country, various Communities of Learning (CoL) were established in the provinces in the country.

Launched in 2006, a CoL is a network of institutions sharing information, expertise, and resource to support technology integration in schools.

In 2007, two CoLs were launched in Iligan and Laoag. At the 2nd National Intel Teach Conference in November, 21 CoL action plans were formulated for 2008.

Intel continues to work with leading universities to develop their engineering curricula.

Recently, three research papers from the University of the Philippines Intel Microelectronics Lab (UP-IML) were presented at the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Region 10 Conference (IEEE TENCON 2007) held in Taipei, Taiwan.

This annual report aims to provide information about Intels economic environment, and social performance to employees, shareholders, customers, suppliers, government officials and the communities in which Intel operates, Wentling said.

100 thousand pesos a month? Well that's big. Gawin kayang mall?

This is were I did most of my growing up days...
Brgy Ditucalan sits on top of Iligan City... temperature up here is colder and the air is fresher...

Everyday I'd pass by a bridge above the famed Ma. Crisitina Falls.. in the afternoon we'd go up the spill way - a dam that controls the waters that flow down the Ma. Cristina Falls...

ICCW Celebrates Filipino Womens Month (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=601&Itemid=1)
March 5, 2008
Wednesday EAMayormita/CIO Press Release

The Iligan City Council of Women marks the observance of March as Filipino Womens Month and March 8 as International Womens Day with activities spearheaded by the City Governments' Womens Affairs Desk.

The Kick-off event would be training on fruit juice processing on March 6, Thursday, from 1:00 to 3:00 o'clock in the afternoon at the city public plaza. A parade and short program will be held on March 7, Friday, followed by a Practical Skills Training and flower arrangement seminar at 7:30 AM until 4:00 o'clock in the afternoon.

A Cooking Contest is scheduled for March 8, Saturday, at 9:00 AM, followed by a Variety Show for Women from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, Hataw Aerobics at 6:00 PM and a Musical Concert dubbed Bahandi sa Kababayen-an at 7:00 in the evening. 100 thousand pesos a month? Well that's big. Gawin kayang mall?

An LGU in Luzon (forgot its name) many years ago, privatized their public market's operations and management. Result? A public market that's as clean and as neat as a mall.
Tagbilaran City's public market and bus terminal, on the other hand, is still government managed, as far as I know. And the last time I was there, even their fish stalls were clean and odorless, as with the rest of the public market.
Conclusion? It's not who manages that matters, but HOW it is managed. If our public markets were managed PROFESSIONALLY, our markets would be tourist attractions by themselves.:2cents:

what's the point of posting that gaisano mall blueprint? having access to those could-be-critical documents cannot, in any way, make a forumer stand out from the rest.

please delete it, you could be posing a threat to the security of the mall and its goers in the future.

it is not for public consumption.

these blueprints are simple floor plans, not foundation / construction drawings which is what a bomber would need if he wants to bring the building down.

Most of the big malls are displaying a "mall layout/store locator" near the entrance similar to the layout/floor plan posted here. Does it pose a security threat to the mall and the goers?

PHINMA Withdraws...

Philippine Investment and Management (PHINMA) was expected to take over Iligan Medical Center College early this 1st semester. However, a problem occured with the pricing. PHINMA wanted a slash off from the original price which the school unreservedly protested. The final phase of negotiation which took place in Manila, ended with PHINMA backing out.

OVER 200 shuttlers are expected to compete for honors in the Araw ng Dabaw Badminton Tournament at the Smashville Fitness Center on March 15 and 16.

Tournament director Danilo Dividina, who guested at the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum Thursday, said the two-day competition would have entries from Cotabato City, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro, Kidapawan, Iligan, Davao City and from nearby cities and provinces.

He said, "We will have the mixed doubles, class B and C, men's and women's classes C,D,E,F. We already have a database to determine the classification of players. But for those who haven't been joining our tournaments, there will be a leveling of players on March 14."

Too small for a big clientele.

‘There Can Only Be One’
By REY LACHICA

The Philippine Collegiate Championship Games will be more challenging, more exciting and truly a nationwide affair when its 2008 edition formally kicks off this June.

For one, the event patterned after the US NCAA, will have a projected number of 250 schools aside from the champion teams from top colleges nationwide, including the UAAP and NCAA.

This developed yesterday after the organizing Philippine Collegiate Champions League headed by former PBA Chairman Rey Gamboa, formally signed an accord with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas headed by its President Manny V. Pangilinan and Executive Director Patrick Gregorio.

Now on its eighth year, the event, first organized by multi-titled coach Joe Lipa, will be carrying a new slogan: There Can Only Be One.

Asked to comment on their slogan, Gregorio stressed that there should be only one national champion.

"Isa lang naman dapat ang maging national champion,"said Gregorio.

Also present during the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement were representatives of Solar Sports - the official coveror of the annual tournament won byAteneo last year.

The Eagles, beaten by the La Salle Archers in the UAAP, downed University of Visayas in the finals.

Aside from the R500,000 top prize in the form of scholarship and athletic equipment, this year’s champion will represent the country in the Universiade Games in Serbia next year.

The elimination is unique this time since it will consist of four levels.

The first of which will have the 250 collegiate teams taking part in their respective mother leagues to determine the top four squads that will represent the nine regional areas - Regional Area 1 (Dagupan, Pangasinan and Baguio), Regional Area 2 (Pampanga and Bulacan), Regional Area 3 (Quezon and Bicol provinces), Regional Area 4 (Iloilo and Bacolod), Regional Area 5 (Dumaguete and Bohol), Regional Area 6 (Tacloban, Ormoc and Samar), Regional Area 7 (Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Misamis Oriental and CARAGA), Regional Area 8 (Davao, Socsargen and Maguindanao) and Regional Area 9 (Zamboanga (cities and provinces) and Misamis Oriental.

Then the winners from each region will advance to the Zonal Championship where teams will be divided into four divisions.

NEDA approves Panay transmission cost overruns (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/mar/13/yehey/business/20080313bus7.html)

THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Cabinet Committee has approved the increase in the cost of the Northern Panay Backbone Transmission project by more than a third.

The interagency body granted the request of the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) to increase the project cost by 39.11 percent to P1.9 billion from P1.37 billion owing to higher prices of raw materials.

TransCo, which is the implementing agency, said the project will be financed through internal funds in case the project is not enrolled for Calyon financing.

The power transmission project is aimed at ensuring system reliability and operational flexibility as well as extend transmission services to un-electrified barangays by accommodating load growth and addressing the load voltage problems in Northern Panay.

More specifically, the project is designed to prevent overloading, accommodate generation capacity additions, and improve the quality of power transmission in Aklan and the northern part of Antique through an upgraded line and additional substation capacity.

The project will also provide a new distribution point for the Panay sub-grid, and prepare affected electric cooperatives and distribution utilities in the area for the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM).

NEDA also approved the increase in project cost of the Metro Iligan Regional Infrastructure Development Project (MIRIDP) to P2.03 billion from P1.51 billion.

The cost increases were blamed on price adjustment and escalation, increase in the quantities of other items of work, physical contingencies, changes in alignment of Road Segment 2, addition of alternative fuel investment project, among others.

The MIRIDP provides off-site infrastructure support for the Metro Iligan Regional Agro-Industrial Center (MIRAIC), one of the industrial estates identified in the Cagayan de Oro—Iligan Corridor Area Development Zone.

The project was originally scheduled for implementation over a six-year period to be implemented by the provincial government of Lanao del Norte.

The approved schedule covered the period 1998 to 2003, while the loan agreement period covered the period 2000 to 2005, which was subsequently revised to run for the period 2003 to 2009.

Hydropower capability yet to be fully tapped: DOE exec

MINDANAO is open to both local and foreign investors to pour in capital in hydroelectric sector, only that the Department of Energy is extra careful before allowing them to put up their investments.

Ramon Santos, DOE representative during the Philippine Economic Briefing Monday, said Mindanao is open for investments, especially that the hydropower capability of the island has yet to be fully tapped.

Santos cited the Maria Christina Falls in Iligan City, which despite its capacity to run at least six hydros, is only running two. "It is true, that there are only two hydros running, and it also needs repair," Santos said.

One of the concerns raised by the business sector during the economic briefing was the looming energy crisis that is expected to hit Mindanao in the coming years.

Santos said that one of the problems in the entry of investors is the bidding process, which takes some time. "We are also cautious when it comes to foreign investors," Santos said. (CPM)

Pres. Gloria Arroyo (in photo) led officials of the National Steel Corporation (NSC) in the reopening of the giant steel plant in Iligan City last Feb. 3. The president pressed the ceremonial button to signal the startup of the plant. The president said the reopening of the steel plant should create 5,000 jobs and restore Iligan as the center of Mindanao's industrialization. Gracing the ceremonies were officials of the NSC, the city government and leaders of the Iligan business community. With a capacity of 1.5 million metric tons a year, NSC is expected to generate roughly $750 million in annual revenues from domestic and international sales. Pres. Arroyo thanked the founding chairman of Global Infrastructure Holdings Ltd. (GIHL) Mhan Lal Mittal, and his son Prammod Mittal, president of the NSC management board, for their confidence in NSC despite its P13.8 million debt owed to some of the country's biggest banks. GIHL is the overseas holding company of Ispat Industries Ltd., one of India's largest steel-based industry group.

Lanao municipality holds Alimango fest (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/03/15/feat/lanao.municipality.holds.alimango.fest.html)
By Richel Umel
Lanao Correspondent

LALA, Lanao del Norte -- March 23 would be a sumptuous festive day for the coastal town of Lala, Lanao del Norte as it celebrates the 7th Alimango (mud crab) Festival that will be the highlight of 59th Charter day.

Lala town Mayor Santiago Bontilao, who is the brains behind the "Alimango" Festival, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro in an interview Friday that an estimated 1.2 tons of mud crab will be cooked and formed into a so-called crab mountain.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

It will be unveiled in the plaza before the huge crowd and be shared and given free to visitors and onlookers who will witness the Alimango Festival street dancing and showdown competition open category.

An alimango rodeo and race will also give color to the festival.

Bontilao said the local government unit (LGU) of Lala through the municipal agriculture's office is engaged in crab fattening at the community level as an alternative livelihood for fishing villages fronting the rich brackish water of Panguil Bay. These will be harvested a day prior to the festival, Mayor Bontilao added.

The municipality of Lala is the breeding ground of mud crab, lobsters, shrimps, shellfish, bangus, Lapu-lapu and other marine species, including the green turtle and hoaxbill turtle.

Bontilao said the crabs hatched their eggs at the mouth of Panguil Bay near Maigo town in Lanao del Norte and Clarin of Misamis Occidental. The fingerlings will then drift to the interior part of Panguil and grow in Lala and Kapatagan coastal areas.

Bontilao said the LGU is intensifying integrated coastal resource management to empower the community will protect, manage, and sustain the fishery resource. The area is a source of quality crabs and shrimps.

Aside from rich marine resources, Lala, a vegetable bowl of the province, is the lone producer of fresh calamansi planted on a 700-hectare community-based plantation. It supplies the market demand of Cebu, Manila, and other parts of Mindanao. It also exports quality processed calamansi juice dubbed as "O-Lala" under the One Town One Product."

The Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) Northern Mindanao has just extended P900,000 as livelihood grant to the plantation.

The Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR)-Asian Development Bank (ADB) funded the various constructions of road networks, drainage, and irrigation system for interior barangays and coast areas while Support for Agrarian Reform for Central Mindanao (Star-CM) extended livelihood support assistance.

While there is so-called crab mentality in a community, Bontilao firmly believes that in the principle of collective efforts and synergy of actions, the delivery of development initiatives in Lala will be achieved.

Bontilao said domestic and foreign tourists visit Lala, which is aiming to become a first class municipality this year. It has a total 27 barangays with a population of 32,000 inhabitants and an IRA of P74 million including local revenue generated.

Due to its affordable business tax rate, local investors flock to Barangay Maranding, a commercial center of Lala where small-scale businesses converge.

Wow pare ang galing mo na talaga. I Hope one of these days posts mo rin update of the GMall. When ba talaga opening nila??

Ba't nagtatagalog kayong lahat?

In line with that, kaylangan din bagohin ang ducting, electrical wiring, flooring, walling -- basically the interior design of the whole 3rd and 4th floors from the ceiling down to the flooring. Gustong-gusto talaga ng owner yung top-of-the-line equipment para these theaters can be comparable to those in Ayala Malls such as Glorieta, Greenbelt and Market-Market. There was also a revision in the parking area so that it can accomodate as many as 1,200 cars, if possible.

About 90% of the space is already occupied with Bench occupying the biggest stall unit. Most of the signature clothing lines and fastfood chains will have an outlet in the mall. (I cannot divulge the stores at the moment but you won't basically have to travel far to enjoy your shopping.)

The whole mall, when completed, will have a total indoor area of almost 6 hectares, already almost at par with those large malls in large cities. The owner is also planning to put up another one - of much bigger size - in the Western side of the city (approaching Global Steel from Iligan City proper) in a hope to penetrate (or dominate) the market in this part of Mindanao.

Thank you for welcoming me. :)

The dates are all tentative, except for the grand opening one. But the owner wants the mall to be opened to the public soon.

Just a heads up, guys, 3 food chains have already started touching their stalls. When I said touching, I meant construction. They have already started setting up their own interior works. Each stall would have its own unique approved designs. I've seen them and they all look really good.

The contractors are also hoping to finish the exterior walls by the second week of April. To be honest, that should have been done a week ago had it not for the continued rains. (Maulan sa Iligan these past several weeks.) BTW, the owner decided to use claddings for the exterior walls facing the highway. Claddings are very expensive but they are very, very nice to look at. In between the cladded portion of the exterior walls will be giant billboards intended for advertisements.

This mall will have giant exterior lightings to brighten up the whole exterior walls (or the entire building) so that when you're far away from the mall, you'll see it as if it's a huge xmass tree with ample lightings the would dominate the entire Iligan skyline. Magandang-maganda talaga ang mall na ito kasi this will be the prime Gaisano Mall in Mindanao. The owner is keen on penetrating Iligan area very seriously. However, all this would depend primarily on the success of this first one -- in this city.

The mall has a grand atrium, semi-circular in form on the right side of the entrance/facade. (BTW, there are 3 entrances on the ground floor and additional entrances on every floor in the parking area, which is again a multi-level parking.) On the ground-floor of the atrium would be a function area, such as for exhibits and concerts. Gaisano is now heavily trying to put on blue print the negotiation with GMA7 to send the entire S.O.P. hosts and staff for this mall’s grand opening and which will be telecasted nationwide. Another grand concert/event is planned on September 29, in time for the city fiesta.

See you all on the opening.

Legacy of the late Mayor Macas (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/cag/2008/03/17/life/legacy.of.the.late.mayor.macas.html)
By Richel V. Umel
Lanao Correspondent

LINAMON, Lanao del Norte -- The residents of Linamon, Lanao del Norte commemorate the first death anniversary of the late Mayor Cherlito R. Macas.

While he was between life and death, Mayor Macas raised his right thumb and said "Mommy Approved! Halleluiah!"

The Mayor died at the age of 52 in one of the hospitals in Cebu City at 3 a.m. of March 17, 2007. His wife Vera and daughter Cherry Eve "Chinkee" were by his bedside.

A good son, father

How he had wished to see his loving parents, brother, and sister who were already on their way to Cebu. But no power could hold Mayor Macas back from death.

For Chinkie, her loving father was the man who comforted and hugged her in times of sorrow, shared her laughter, cheered her success, and motivated her throughout life's challenges.

A good shepherd, an organizer

He was a learned man who practiced the essence of good governance. He made it possible for local government employees who were more than willing to learn to undergo a series of capability building trainings as an opportunity to grow professionally.

His colleagues in politics recall that during campaign periods or other activities requiring collective effort, no one will be left unattended. He was "one for all, all for one" kind of guy, councilor Rima Canoy recalled.

The awardee

Linamon, the mayor's town, has gradually emerged as a town to match. It was a recipient of the Galing Pook Awradee in November 2002 for its solid waste management dubbed as "Basura Atras, Linamon Abante sa Kalambuan" (Balak) (Garbage Retreat, Linamon Onward for Progress).

Through the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), the town's best practices in good governance were replicated in local government throught the country.

Macas was invited to speak in other countries as far as sustainable environment program is concerned.

Mayor Macas during his term as public servant became an Outstanding Municipal Mayor of the Philippines awardee in December 2003.

Koreans, Japanese, Chinese and Indians keen on putting up steel plants in Misamis Oriental (http://mwamaarkhh.multiply.com/journal/item/329/Koreans_Japanese_Chinese_and_Indians_keen_on_putting_up_steel_plants_in_Misamis_Oriental)
By MARK D. FRANCISCO

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – THREE foreign companies are expressing interest to put up steel plants in Northern Mindanao.

Vice Mayor Vicente Emano revealed over the weekend that a Japanese steel company and a Chinese one are interested to jointly erect a steel plant in Misamis Oriental, the province next to Cagayan de Oro City.

According to Emano, the location of the steel plant will encompass the towns of Balingasag and Lagonglong in the eastern part of the province.

It will be located in a total of 650 hectares of property which is currently used as a papaya plantation of the Limketkais, the family which owns the biggest shopping mall in Northern Mindanao.

Emano explained that the joint Japanese-Chinese venture were keen in putting up their investment at the Phividec Industrial Estate in Tagoloan town nearer Cagayan de Oro City but there was not enough space there for the steel plant.

Emano, also former governor of Misamis Oriental, said this development would be a “blessing in disguise” for the eastern part of the province and went on urging Balingasag Mayor Alexis Quina and Lagonglong Mayor Manuel Pamisa Jr. to make their towns as growth areas.

He also exhorted Quina and Pamisa to work together in speedily converting the papaya plantation from agricultural to industrial land.

When he was Cagayan de Oro City mayor, Emano coined the term growth area to help push for more investments in the western and southern part of the city.

In a related development, an Indian steel company is eyeing Iligan City as the location of its one of its plants to compete with Global Steel Philippines .

Ispat Industries Ltd. will pour in a total of US$1.6 billion investments in the city.

This was part of the US$2 billion worth of investments that President Arroyo was able to secure in a state visit to India late September.

According to its website, Ispat Industries Ltd. claims to be one of the leading integrated steel makers in India.

Its products include sponge iron, hot roiled coils, cold rolled coils, galvanized sheets and coils and color coated sheets.

Global Steel Philippines is currently dominating the steel industry in Northern Mindanao after it took over the doomed National Steel Corporation a few years back.

In still another development, Emano is set to embark on a trading mission to South Korea to convince Pohang Iron and Steel Company (Posco), the third largest steel producer in the world, to put up a nickel plant in Northern Mindanao.

Posco officials were initially interested to pour in their investment in Gingoog City, also located in eastern Misamis Oriental.

When he was Cagayan de Oro City mayor for nine years, Emano personally headed trade missions.
