If you'll see the pictures taken by @JC, the cladding has already started. Problema lang pag umoulan ng malakas -- nagiging dilikado ang installation kaya bumabagal din ang installation.
@Gors, the exterior won't be substantially any different from the rendering which @alingatong has posted. The designers just improved it a little bit so that it won't look cramped and the billboards would be bigger and more imposing. They have to be that way because they are billboards after all. And obviously, the materials too have been replaced with the material that you see now. That's supposedly be covered with just paint and now it's a metal cladding -- that's the same material installed on the exterior walls of the newly renovated, SM Megamall in Pasig.
This mall is approximately a 6-hectare mall. (I'm talking of the covered area alone, excluding the parking.) The parking would be a 6-7 level multi story structure that will accommodate approximately 1,200-1,300 vehicles at one single time of any form -- sedan, mini cars, big 4-wheel drive SUVs, or even delivery trucks. This mall also has 18 escalators (but we're planning to remove the 2 because another changes would have to be implemented -- again, grrrrr!!), 8 elevators and 24 stair cases. Two of these 8 elevators would stand just on the brim of the atrium and they have to be imported from Germany because these would have to be a little bit oversized and the opposite walls have to be made up of a 1-inch Pyrex glass so that they would be "see through". In other words, the passengers would be able to see the shoppers and the shoppers would be able to see them back while they're moving up and down the building. This is typical in hotels but rarely installed in malls kaya medyo kakaiba itong mall na ito sa Mindanao because I have not yet seen anything like this mall in the island so far. Maykalumaan na kasi ang mga mall sa Mindanao even those huge ones in Davao and the new ones build by SM are not multi level malls actually that's why they cannot command a hotel-type of ambience -- for a shopping mall. I will not give you the details of the ceiling so that you would have valid reasons to get excited for its opening, but boy(!!!), you'd be very impressed, I promise! :) There are cove lightings (actually plenty of those) as well as several types of drops. The lightings are ALL Germany made or German technology, at least. The flooring is covered with a polished light color 60x60 granite imported from Italy (!!!), not China OK? So, when the lights are all on, you'd see a floating effect as you walk through the hallways and the flooring would look like a huge swimming pool. The downside of it though is that, you might not be able to appreciate it when the mall is cramped with shoppers.
The real winner of this mall is the Gaisano Department Store itself as it would occupy a little over half of the entire mall. Sa tingin ko nga masyadong napalaki ang department store pero Gaisano is serious in its competition with SM and the opening of GMall-Iligan would be a strong message to SM that they are a serious competitor in retail industry. Makikita nyo rin lahat ito that’s why I encourage you all to watch out for its opening. Huwag munang sumilip sa luob habang hindi pa talaga tapos para magugulat ka pagpasok mo kung tapos na. Kung nasa luob ka, hindi mo akalain na nasa Iligan kalang pala.
@Alingatong or JC, I will send you some pictures of the interior on the second week of April through your emails. I do not know how to post pictures here myself. Huwag kayon pumasok at kumoha ng pictures ha. Ipapahuli ko kayo. Hehehe. I'll keep you posted before my works at the mall are completed. :)
@Ibex, sorry, I don't have passes to the theaters. I don't think anyone can have one without having it passed through the computers. The theaters are all computerized and movie sessions are timed. No one would be allowed to get into the theaters in the middle of the screenings. Each one has to wait for the intermission so that everybody goes inside the theaters all at the same time. When the movie starts, the theaters would then be closed. This would also be done for better security. Theaters are planned to open starting at 10:30 in the morning to 12 in the evening. Reservation to movies can be done through internet soon. The mall, however, would close earlier, at exactly 10pm. :)

Alingatong March 18th, 2008, 01:03 PM Iligan PNP set for 'Semana Santa'
Iligan City (18 March) -- The Philippine National Police (PNP) in Iligan City, in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, local government units, non-governmental organizations and religious sectors, join hands in formulating and maintaining an effective security system to adequately prevent any acts of lawlessness during the observance of the Semana Santa or Holy Week, as well as ensuring smooth flow of traffic along main roads.
City Police Director Sr. Supt Virgilio T. Ranes said all station commanders of the city's five police stations were already instructed to coordinate with various religious sectors in their areas for their schedule of activities to provide security during the observance of the event.
Ranes added they are intensifying intelligence networking to monitor possible threats and their personnel are being deployed to several churches, while checkpoints are established at strategic areas.
"We closely coordinate with the 104th Brigade Philippine Army in case there is a need for augmentation and other force multipliers in maintaining peace and order, likewise, mobilize radio groups and other civic organization to support the PNP in providing assistance to the general public in relevance to the scheduled activities of the Semana Santa," he said.
Ranes further said that traffic personnel and enforcers are deployed to direct traffic along the streets adjacent to Christian churches. (PIA-Iligan City)

Alingatong March 18th, 2008, 01:05 PM Iligan LPCC conducts weekly price monitoring and advocacy on price tag implementation
Iligan City (18 March) -- To shed light on the publicly perceived high prices of agricultural and fish products in the market, the Iligan City Local Price Coordinating Council (LPCC) through its secretariat-the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) called for an emergency meeting primarily to validate on the current price situation through the weekly price monitoring being conducted by the agencies/office concerned.
City Agriculturist Octavius Molo said that three groups were organized and deployed to the different sections on grains, fruits and vegetables, fish and meat in the market.to the recent price monitoring conducted by the City Agriculture Office-lead agency, Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS), and the National Food Authority.
The monitoring activity focused on getting the current prices and supply situation of agricultural products as well as the advocacy on the implementation of Price Tag Law (Republic Act 71) on agri products and the campaign of sanitation in the market.
The inspection generally disclosed a minimal compliance of the Price Tag Law among market vendors and most of the weighing scales used by vendors did not bear the 2008 calibration seal from the Permits and License Division, thus, all vendors were advised to have their weighing scales calibrated as soon as possible.
As to source of supply on lowland vegetables or the "pinakbet vegetables" such as squash, eggplant, ampalaya are sourced out from Iligan farmers, able to supply only 50% of the total demand. The other 50% demand of lowland vegetables and 100% requirement of upland vegetables like cabbage, broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce are sourced out from Claveria, Misamis Oriental and Cagayan de Oro City, said Molo.
Previously, two (2) trucks of vegetables are being delivered everyday at Pala-o market, at present only one (1) truckload, thus, there is shortage of supply.
Also, impact on fuel/gasoline price increase affects prices of agri products.
Fish catch in Iligan is not enough to meet the local fish consumption. Only 25% is being supplied by 658 fishermen in Iligan City with an average of 1kilogram fish catch per fisherman while 75% is from outside sources coming from Zamboanga areas like Cities of Pagadian, Dipolog, General Santos and as far as Surigao City.
Molo added, volume of supply at fish landing area is also decreasing at the rate of more or less 20% per year. Iligan City had 7,671,70.50 kilograms of supply of fish in 2005, while for year 2006 it only had 6,243,881.64 kilograms and a diminishing supply of fish of 5,946,809 kilograms only for 2007. Fish supply from Dipolog City were allegedly diverted to Cebu, and production volume of fishing boats also decreased due to fuel price increase, fishing trips were lessened.
Based on the findings of the monitoring team, the members of the LPCC have agreed that Price Tag implementation by market vendors be included in the daily inspection of market enforcers/inspectors and the City Agriculture Office price monitoring team to have a schedule of market visit on a weekly basis. Market enforcers and inspectors are to regularly conduct random calibration of weighing scales in the market using standard test weights. Calibration is one way of ensuring accuracy in weights and measures.
Also, it was recommended that Commodity/Industry Association like the NorMinVeggies can provide a model for farmers and traders in Iligan, in upgrading veggie supply in the market. (PIA-Iligan City)

We have already the likes of Trendline, Jerry's, Fiesta Mall, etc. and we don't wanna see another one in the making. For GMall's department store, how we wish to see an upscale display looks and products designed to appeal both class A & B consumers. Para na rin mag-compliment sa ganda ng mall, dapat maganda rin ang mga paninda.

Barangay Tambacan is one of the poorest Barangay of Iligan City. It was once owned by 6 dominant families of Iligan, among them is Fernando Congmon. Though some of the residents pay rents, majority of the people were informal urban settlers. The barangay was once a thriving fishing village of Iligan and fishing became their main source of income. However, things have changed. The Tambacan River and the sea coast have become a recipient of indiscriminate throwing and dumping of almost all sorts of domestic and industrial wastes. These events greatly affected the income of the people. Children were forced to stop schooling to help earn a living for the family.
In the year 2000, Purok 2A of Tambacan became the pilot area for Gawad Kalinga in Iligan, thus, GK Rainbow Village was born. The transformation that happened to the residents of GK Rainbow Village inspired so many people in Iligan especially the Brgy. Council of Tambacan, sharing the same vision with Gawad Kalinga of building peaceful, progressive, sustainable and empowered community, and the barangay opted to transform the whole of Barangay Tambacan into a Gawad Kalinga site.
Year 2003, Gawad Kalinga organized the Kapitbahayan Neighborhood Association in Purok 6 and 6A, as an expansion of GK Rainbow Village of Purok 2A, Barangay Tambacan. Last October 5, 2004, through the efforts of the Brgy.Council of Tambacan, the City Government of Iligan bought the land totaling to 1,600 sq. m. from the Congmon family. October 28, 2004, Barangay Tambacan and Gawad Kalinga signed the MOA. The said parcel of land was allowed to be used and developed and has now become “Congmon GK Village” in honor of the forefather of the family.
As GK expands in Tambacan, residents of Purok 6 and 6A hope and pray that they too will be given a chance to have a decent home and be alleviated from their present situation and experience the miracle GK brought the once hopeless and deprived of our society.

At all times the families are threatened by the fear of being evicted due to the mineral exploitation of industrial companies. During the expansion of the operation of the Mindanao Portland Cement Corporation (MPCC), most of the households were affected emotionally; if they will stay longer in the area health will be at risk. They squatted countless times and evicted again and again until they settle down at Tag-ibo, Dalipuga, Iligan City, the land that was owned by the MPCC.
After a couple of years in staying in the area, they come – up of a plan or consensus that they will beg to the President of the Corporation through a letter signed by the residents in the area that they will be going to buy the land in a very affordable amount with the counterpart of the City Government of Iligan. They wrote twice and heard nothing from the company President. Depression and weariness filled in their hearts of the thought that any moment they will be evicted again.
One day, they were surprised by the news brought by the MPCC that the company has a better plan for them regarding their settlement in the area. Last November 2005, the agreement was formally signed by a tri-partnership headed by the City Government of Iligan, MPCC, and Gawad Kalinga at Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park. On February 2006, Gawad Kalinga was able to turn-over 2 Tatag houses, and finally two families started to live a life with a descent home and environment.

ILIGAN City will host the regional elimination for Northern Mindanao in the country's qualifier for the World Chess Olympiad as well as the composition of the national training pool on March 23 to 25.
Survivors will then advance to the national elimination in Manila wherein the country's top Grandmasters such as 14-year-old Wesley So, Mark Paragua, Eugene Torre and Joey Antonio are ready to confront the tough guys in the finals.
"Our top players here should participate in the Region-10 elimination in Iligan.
This event is interesting and a very challenging test to the locals' strength," said Fide Arbiter Domingo Oga Jr. of the Capitol Chess Club.
Already signifying to partake in the three-day Iligan chessfest are Johnnel Balquin, Jake Gonzalez, Jokorn Maestrado, Lyndon Lumancas, Bryan Jose, Nazario Ubanan and Silverio Abasolo.
Meanwhile, Oga said Capitol Chess Club President Lorimer "Memen" Moreno is set to finalize their plan with Governor Oscar S. Moreno about sending the top youngsters here to the 2008 National Junior Championship.
The Junior Championship will be in Mandaluyong City on April 9-14.
The National Juniors will serve as the country's qualifier to the World Junior Championship in Turkey later this year.
Barring unforeseen glitches, the troika of 2007 National Shell Active kiddies champion Lennon Hart Salgados of Corpus Christi, Antonio Chavez Jr. of City High and Alfredo Rapanot Jr. of Xavier University is deemed to represent Misor Chess Club in the National Juniors with veteran National Master Roger Verganio as their coach.
"Sayang lang nga dili sila makadula sa (It's a waste that they can't play in the) National Age-Group where their chances to win are much bigger," said Oga after learning that the age-group tourney has conflicted with the April 1-4 schedules of the 2008 NMRAA Regional Meet. (LLS)

LoL @dude iliganon. I'm not actually in-charge of the mall's marketing and promotions, but from what I've gathered, the mall owner wants to promote the mall to a wider range of customers across all cities and islands. I'm not a huge fan of our local TV stations and I don't support one over the other. However, the mktg and promotion teams might have gathered that GMA7 has a wider viewer-ship than has ABS-CBN and this is especially conspicuous in Metro Manila and the whole island of Luzon where the mall owner wants to target because there are also plans for Gaisano to establish all over the country. :)
MackyK March 21st, 2008, 08:29 AM Sa tingin ko mas lalong lumobo ang cost ng mall na ito.
You bet it has -- from 800M to 1. something billion. (This is a billion peso investment, obviously. I'm not sure if I'm allowed to say this publicly. hehe! :) ) The theater equipments and supplies alone are unbelievably expensive. For example, the seats have to be imported because the owner has approved the designers' proposal to use the ones which Ayala malls are using. And again, they're all THX, Censor Surround, Dolby, etc... top of the line ended, and one of the few in Mindanao to have such high-end equipments and supplies. We're really glad that the Iliganons are excited about this mall. Gaisano is committed to providing the best service it can.
^^Once finished, I would say, will be one of the best and most modern shopping malls in Mindanao at par with the best in Luzon and the Visayas.
Right on, @alingatong! This won't just be another mall that you'll see in Mindanao. This is built to compete -- head-to-head-- with the best in Mindanao. There are new teams added now whose objectives are to improve the design of this mall, something that it is not usually done in other Gaisano mall constructions. When this mall is finished, you will see it by yourself that the designs and the materials have higher quality than the other Gaisano malls. And when it's finished, this will be the model of all the succeeding giant malls of Gaisano all over the country.
Sir may petshop ba sa GMall???
I'm really sorry, I cannot answer this one correctly. I don't have the list of tenants and that's outside of my "jurisdiction". The ones I remember are Mcdo, Jollibee, Dunkin, Pizza Hut, Shakey's, KFC, Mister Donut, Chowking and many more that I cannot remember. Under negotiations are French Baker, Polo Loco and some names I also have forgotten. National Bookstore has also negotiated for a space, but I'm not sure if they could still be accommodated as National requires a wider space which the mall doesn't have anymore. Among the clothing lines, Levis, Dockers, Bench, Guess USA, Molecules, Penshoppe, Giordano and many more. Sorry, I really can't provide the complete list as I don't keep it with me. :)
BTW, why do we have to put the sign "@" after each name? Not that I'm objecting to it. I just find it a weird practice. Hehe! :)
MackyK March 21st, 2008, 09:15 AM hmmm... u mentioned sir that almost half of mall area will be occupied by the departments store,..Im just afraid that they might display products like what they have in gaisano poblacion...whoahh!!i hope not.. at sana spacious in between stalls not like in the latter na halos d na mkagalaw ang mga tao sa sobrang sikip..
The Gaisano Department store (clothing section) alone is about six or seven times larger than the current Gaisano Department store so there would be ample of space for all the goods to be showcased. The grocery section will be at the left side, ground floor, of the mall and is almost as wide as the entire old Gaisano Department Store or two floors of that store put together.
The clothing section will display signature clothing lines, not bargain stuffs. The old Gaisano Department Store will still be opened to the public and would be selling bargain items.
sana mraming divisions like bench, penshoppe, boutiques etc.. pra class and pang class A & B consumers tlga...
Kung masunod ang plano, maganda at medyo "sosyal" tingnan. For example, Bench will have its own unit outside of the department store. So, when the consumers/mallers would just go around the mall and won't go inside Gaisano Store, they will see Bench and they can just buy items there. If they will go inside the department store, they will also find Bench collections there displayed. In other words, the department store would contain an almost a repeat of the clothing lines that can be found in the mall, so hindi bargain ang tinda sa department store. Pero, I could not say they would be class "A" items either because I don't think many shoppers would be able to afford a Lacoste, Hugo Boss, Armani, Polo Ralph Lauren, Polo Sport, Prada, Florsheim, Cole Han, Bass and the like collection. :D

MARANAO INFLUENCE. During the traditional "visita altares" or “visita iglesia” on the night of Maundy Thursday, familiar Maranao decorative handicrafts adorn the altar of the St. Michael’s Cathedral in Iligan City. The Maranao items include the baul (chest) with mother-of-pearl, brassware, wooden drums and other items with okir. A similar Maranao influence can be seen at the altar of the Redemptorist Church also in Iligan City. Iligan is near Marawi City and Lanao del Sur, where the predominantly Muslim Maranaos, reside.

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines' Tubbattaha Reef in the Sulu Sea is now ranked 28th in online voting for the New Seven Wonders of Nature.
Tubbataha Reef is an atoll coral reef in the Philippines. It is now known as a marine sanctuary protected by government because of over 1,000 species, including endangered ones, found on the reef. These include manta rays, lionfish, tortoises, clownfish and sharks.
The opening of nominations for the New Seven Wonders of Nature was announced in Lisbon, Portugal in 2007.
As of March 19, Tubbattaha Reef has inched its way up to the 28th ranking, a position it held on February 14.
Bohol's Chocolate Hills is also fast catching up at 32nd, according to the New7Wonders website.
Bohol's Chocolate Hills is a unique geological formation composed of around 1,268 perfectly cone-shaped hills, all about the same size, spread over an area of more than 50 square kilometers. The hills are covered in green grass that turns brown during the dry season, thus earning them the name "Chocolate Hills."
As of March 19, three natural wonders in Vietnam occupy the top three spots: the Ha Long Bay, the Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and Fansipan Mountain also in Vietnam.
Online voters can choose from 77 official nominees fro the New Seven Wonders of Nature after they register in the website. The live ranking is updated twice a day.
Voting will end on December 31, 2008, then a panel of experts will short-list 21 candidates from which voters worldwide will select the New 7 Wonders of Nature in 2009. The New Seven Wonders of Nature will be announced in 2010.

from Suka Pinakurat Website

Sugar Palm Trees
Sugar palm trees grow abundantly in the wild, usually in ravines near rivers and streams. These trees are brought to life by the palm civet, which spreads the tree’s seeds through its droppings. Rural legend has it that these trees could never be planted by man. Researcher however reveals that it takes six (6) months before the seeds would begin to sprout. Idyok (Kaong) has long been used as a customary ingredient in a myriad of Philippine desserts. These are usually harvested from semi-ripe sugar palm trees grown in abundance in the wild. Gatherers can earn an income after braving the itchy shells and cooking the nut in sugar. Demand for this usually peaks during months of festivities.
While the fruit is but pure unflavored carbohydrate, the sap of the tree’s flowers produces sweet nectar which justifies its name as the sugar palm tree. While the gathering of sap entails a lot of skill and patience, its rewards may be handsome. While a coconut tree may yield up to 2 gallons of sap a day, Sugar palms may produce up to 3 to 5 gallons. Considering that an industrious farmer can easily tend to 10 trees, an income of fifteen thousand pesos is conservatively achievable.
The Plan
This gathering of the nectar is done through a rural trade called manangguete. While the technology of gathering sap from coconuts have long been known to locals that of other palm trees have not been commercially available. It is thus to the best interest of the business that this technology spread that it may have sources for its indigenous raw materials. Under this premise, the Company initiated its skills development and livelihood project for the manangguete. The plan was simple. Gather as many people who would be interested to earn A fifteen thousand pesos a month in areas where the trees are still in abundance, provide a coach to teach the necessary skills and make the necessary business arrangements. Looks simple enough but it’s a lot more complicated than it looks. A fifteen thousand pesos monthly income may prove to be incredulous to rural people, and in more than one occasion they have been fooled into livelihood programs that don’t really work.
Noble Frenchman
The company advertised in the local radio and approached the people and its leaders on areas found to have an abundance of the trees. The results were far less encouraging. People have either grown to be too cynical or are simply too lazy. Far more difficult in teaching the subject matter, it is the opening of the minds of the people for them to listen and participate in the project that proves to be more daunting. They simply are not interested in matters that have yet to be proven to be economically viable and sustainable.
As a prophet is never welcome at home, it may take an outsider to lend credence to the matter. This is where Mathieu came in. Mathieu is a Church volunteer who left the comforts of his home of his native France to spend a few years of his life trying to help the underprivileged farmers of Iligan. We learned he was involved in teaching farmers how to grow papayas and make them into jam. He had little to gain but for the satisfaction of his kind heart that has helped humanity in his most humble way.
We sought the help of Mathieu in interceding on our behalf towards the farmers. It took a while but his persistence paid off. The farmers were astonished as to why a foreigner would be more interested in their forests than they are. In the end a few made the bold step. Starting with a couple of students, the class grew to seven as the hours went by. Soon people realized that what has been said was no propaganda or lie. Interest brewed and the program suddenly breathed signs of life.

To address the perennial problem of vinegar products being disallowed for air travel, the Company has developed the DOL-P box. DOL-P (Dosenang lami Pinakurat) box contains features that should make it fit for air travel. The Styrofoam box is custom made to fit twelve (12) x 250 ml bottles securely in place, with each individual bottle helmed in by styrofoam material on all sides and from bottom to cover. An additional packaging of plastic would cover the entire Styrofoam box for added protection against spillage and leakages. These are then encased in special DOL-P corrugated boxes with appropriate air travel markings.
With the DOL-P Box, Pinakurat and other vinegar products may be checked-in as baggage and be brought along as pasalubong and gift items.

dude_iliganon March 22nd, 2008, 05:25 PM Kung masunod ang plano, maganda at medyo "sosyal" tingnan. :D[/QUOTE]
huh..sorry sir if i became exagg on my msg..hehe.. oo nga i realized d kya ang class A products..hehe
dude_iliganon March 22nd, 2008, 05:31 PM LoL @dude iliganon. :)
so target pla ng gaisano management ang class c,d,e consumers of metromanila.. based on ratings class a and b consumers watch kapamilya shows^^^huh..ehehe..kpamilya po kc ako kya defend lng ako... and gma-agb issue stil exists kya d mssabi na gma tlga ang may higher viewership w/in metromanila..

Alingatong March 24th, 2008, 05:52 AM Easter Sunday Kabanhaw Festival in Tanauan features skimboarding competition
Tacloban City (March 23) -- After the Lenten Week that ended with the Resurrection of the Lord on Easter Sunday, people in the municipalities of Leyte usually flock at the beaches together with families and friends.
In Tanauan, Leyte, hundreds of people from nearby municipalities flocked Sunday, at the Tanauan Beaches particularly at the Skimboarding Area at Bantay Dagat, where a group of young people who called their group as SPAWN organized the Kabanhaw (Resurrection) Festival which features the Mayor's Cup Skimboarding Open Competition and Beach Volleyball Competition.
Mayor Roque Tiu welcomed the competitors and guests; and formally opened the competitions at 1:00 o'clock in the afternoon. Mayor Tiu said that since the National Skimboarding Competition was held in December, he was expecting that only the locals will participate this Easter Sunday.
Mayor Tiu, however, expressed appreciation to the participants from other municipalities and provinces as far as Iligan City and Cebu, and a rider from Georgia USA.
The competitors from other places said they know that there is a Skimboarding competition in Tanauan every Easter Sunday and so they came as early as Holy Tuesday. In fact they spent the Holy Week in Tanauan.
American and German nationals were observed to be among the crowd during the opening program. Also observed were balikbayans from abroad and from other places in the country who came home for the Holy Week. Photojournalists from Mindanao were also noted at the area.
The Beach Volleyball for women was the first event in the Kabanhaw Festival. The Organizers revealed that the Skimboarding Competition will continue up to the evening since there is good lighting in the area provided by the province of Leyte through Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla.
The Skimboarding Competition will end on Tuesday, March 25, but the riders from the other provinces will stay longer to enjoy the waters in Tanauan and in other places of Leyte and Region 8. (PIA 8)

tough March 24th, 2008, 05:31 PM Innovative public school teachers honored by Microsoft
Pasig City (24 March) -- Two public school teachers from Iligan City and one from Makati City won in the 4th Innovative Teachers Leadership Awards (ITLA 4) organized by Microsoft Philippines' Partners in Learning (PiL).
In collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd (http://www.deped.gov.ph/)), ITLA celebrates and honors Filipino educators for contributing to the enhancement of students' learning experience through the imaginative and efficient use of information and communications technology (ICT) in classroom teaching.
Julius Gregory Hechanova, Mathematics teacher in Iligan City East High School, Iligan City (Region X) won with his "Right Triangle Trigonometry (An Application Approach)." Fedelyn Gomez, a Makabayan teacher in Tomas Cabili National High School, Iligan City (Region X) won with her lesson plan which is tailored to teach the students to design an Animal Production Project Proposal and make students realize that successful business endeavors always start with a business plan.
Ma. Noemi Bagayaua, an English teacher in CEMBO Elementary School, Makati City (NCR) won for her Literature-Based Approach in Teaching Reading where lessons are prepared through PHOTOSTORY.
The three top winners of ITLA 4 will represent the Philippines in the annual Asian Regional Innovative Teachers Conference in Vietnam this April.
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said: "Technology has become a global standard even for developing countries like the Philippines. If we are to empower our students for the 21st century, our schools must become truly creative and innovative organizations."
Meanwhile, DepEd Assistant Secretary Dr. Teresita Inciong added that there is a need to ensure that our teachers are prepared and equipped with the skills to effectively utilize technology and integrate it in the curriculum. Inciong represented Lapus during the ITLA 4 Awards Night held recently at Legend Villas Hotel in Mandaluyong.
"We are updating and honing the expertise of our teachers in ICT integration because they remain our most important asset in the classroom," she stressed.
For her part, Michelle Casio, Academic Programs Manager, Microsoft Philippines emphasized: "In the ITLA, we're not only giving an award to dedicated teachers who have demonstrated ingenuity. ITLA is also about forming a community of educators who are interacting and sharing best practices with each other."
The three national winners came from the Potensyal top 30 DepEd school divisions who were encouraged to join the ITLA 4. Another Microsoft PiL project, Potensyal is a recently concluded search for "driven DepEd school divisions, which yielded entries from all over the Philippines."
Contenders for ITLA 4 submitted a digital portfolio of work containing their profile, personal essay, learning materials, samples of students' works, and abstracts of their projects, at the Partners in Learning Online Community.
Ten semi-finalists flew to Manila to attend a teambuilding seminar and compete in the last phase of the search. As ambassadors of PiL, these teachers participated in activities such as Educator Community Development, peer coaching and training. They also took part in promoting other PiL programs.
Each semi-finalist received a medal in recognition of their achievement in teaching and an Acer laptop powered by Windows Vista. The laptop will enable them to further their innovative practices as they return to their respective schools.
According to Casio, the strength of the PiL program lies in the relationships formed by Microsoft and its allies. "In Partners in Learning, Microsoft Philippines collaborates with government agencies like the DepEd, and other educational institutions to improve student performance and build the capability of the Filipino to be a global competitor," shared Casio.
Asec. Inciong enthused: "DepEd is eager to embark on more initiatives with Partners in Learning to allow more educators and students to experience how technology can transform lives." (DepEd (communications@deped.gov.ph))

g0Rs March 24th, 2008, 08:14 PM Cement may retain slot in this year’s IPP (http://www.tribune.net.ph/business/20080324bus1.html)
By Ayen Infante
03/24/2008
The Board of Investments (BoI) is intent on including cement projects anew under the Investment Priorities Plan (IPP) for this year to bring in new manufacturers and encourage competition that may result to cheaper cement prices in the local market.
A government source said the cement sector represented by the Cement Manufacturers of the Philippines (Cemap) has welcomed the BoI’s decision to remove the industry under the draft 2008 IPP because it discourages new players to engage in new projects due to the absence of fiscal incentives.
This means, the official said, existing players have no reason to be threatened with the possible entry of new investors, and therefore, continue to enjoy control of the market.
Cemap members include Holcim Philippines, APO Cement Corp., Continental Operating Corp., Republic Cement, Taiheiyo Cement Philippines, Iligan Cement Corp., Lloyds Richfield Industrial Corp., Mindanao Portland cement Corp., Northern Cement, Pacific Cement Philippines Inc., and Solid Cement Corp.
The BoI has yet to further study the impact of relisting the cement industry as one of the strategic industries that may be granted fiscal incentives under the IPP.
The BoI said if the move will result to lower prices of cement products in the market, the government may still grant incentives to welcome the entry of new investors.
Cement was one of the industries that was dropped in the 2008 IPP among other industries from the original listings of 11 priority sectors.
The BoI earlier reasoned out that the cement industry may no longer need subsidy from the government since any cement project could become viable without the incentives.
In 2007, cement was included for incentives but should include exploration activities.
Cement prices remained high in the local market at P175 to P180 per bag as against P110 to P115 per bag in 2004 to 2005.

MackyK March 25th, 2008, 04:28 AM I'd like to thank everyone for making those pictures shown here. There's no way I could have done it myself, honestly. You guys are great! Iligan thread rocks big time because of you all! :okay:
I'm also asking for your patience, guys. What we have here (the pictures) are not even maybe 1/5 of the entire mall. Not even 1/6, in my estimate. I cannot take photos of the Left Wing section cause it's entirely "congested" at the moment. There are still lots of scaffoldings and support beams in placed. My camera is also not that good; it cannot capture a wider view, so I had to get nearer to the place that I wanted to take or I would get a blurred picture. It has only 2megapixels (my 12megapixel cam was stolen just 2 weeks ago by someone I know pa. grrr!) Also, the mall has already got several partitions so it's really impossible to take a view as a whole piece at this stage.
@Gors, on the 4th floor are where the heavy equipments and lots of stuffs for the theaters are at the moment. Those giant aircons are also in there so there's no good reason to take photos of that area at this point in time. But don't worry; I will come back here with better photos, and hopefully, with a much improved set up of the mall.
Just an update, the installation for the light blue metal cladding has just started. We would need the service of @JC for the photos for the exterior walls (So, calling on @JC!). But maybe he can do that after a week or two from now or when the installers have covered a significant area for better pictures.
Alingatong March 25th, 2008, 04:33 AM @MackyK, does GMall have a space allocated for exhibits, mini-concert and the like? :)
MackyK March 25th, 2008, 04:42 AM @MackyK, does GMall have a space allocated for exhibits, mini-concert and the like? :)
There's actually one on the 4th floor but the owner is still deciding whether to go ahead with it or not because the department store would really require a lot of space and some people are entertaining the idea of using that area as part of the department store. But in case that huge, hollow section on the 4th floor would be converted into part of the department store, the ground level of the atrium, which is about 30 meters (length) by 35 meters (width), again, more of less, can very well serve for such purposes you said.
MackyK March 25th, 2008, 04:56 AM When the plan was brought to us for "second opinion", much of it can't be redone anymore because they came to us only very recently (late stage, so to speak) and much of the structures have already been put in placed. If we would change something, the strength of the foundation might be affected so we decided to touch only on areas that won't affect the structural strength (foundation.)
For example, we wanted to have bigger holes around the escalators (atrium-like) so that we can create a more spacious aura, which is more classy in our opinion, but there are beams right beside and almost around the escalators, so that idea automatically went down the drain. We wouldn't also want to suggest something that would delay the opening of the mall any further (the owner wants it opened soon.) But as it was, the entire mall's design was already better than most if not all Gaisano Malls in the entire country. This one would be so much better than the ones in Cebu, and most definitely the ones in CdO, Iloilo and Ozamis. Why do I think that is so? Because that’s what the owner wants this mall to be. And again, when this particular mall becomes a success, which I highly think it would be, another one -- of much bigger size -- will be built on the Eastern side of the City, as envisioned. Iligan City must have a very special spot on the owner's heart. Hehehe! But I can honestly say that the owner has a very good heart. :)
Alingatong March 25th, 2008, 06:52 AM ^^Thanks @MackyK. I'm sure, the owner would be very happy to learn that Iliganons are equally excited and thankful to have this mall.

CONSISTENT performer Johnnel Balquin leads a handful of local players from the Provincial Capitol Chess Club partaking in the ongoing Region 10 chess eliminations in Iligan City.
With four rounds played in the nine-round Swiss system event, Balquin is reportedly marching his way on top of the solid title contenders.
Also competing in Iligan are former National Shell Active Youth chess champions Bryan Jose and Lennon Hart Salgados as well as Misor Club compatriots Jake Gonzales, Nazario Ubanan, Sonny Lumancas, Silverio Abasolo and John Vincent Cayaba.
Survivors will advance to the National Qualifier for the country's representatives to the 2008 World Chess Olympiad. It will also determine the composition of the national training pool.

MackyK March 26th, 2008, 04:41 AM @MackyK, just want to know if there will be kiddie rides or some sort of kids entertainment center inside the mall?
That would be on the 3rd floor beside the theater section and it's a really huge one or about equivalent to 2 theaters in floor area.
Someone asked about the overpass, yes, there would be one, and it will be designed to compliment with the mall's exterior design.
The reason why there's a huge uncovered (with cement) area on the front of the mall opposite Cosmopolitan building is because that would be all glass and it's where the entrance from the overpass would be.
@Waway, ilang beses na nabago ang floor plan ng mall kaya by portion na ang nangyari ngayon. Ang bodega ng Department Store pa iba-iba rin at ang laking portion ang kinakain. I think Gaisano is negotiating with the owner of the lot beside the parking area just next to Globe Telecom's tower so they can build a bodega there. A substantial space for lease will be added to the mall if the bodega will be transferred somewhere.

Hope is what we can only think right now because the lot deals with a lot of complications, from what I know. Parang ang narinig ko mga pari yata ang may-ari pero merong iba pang mga grupo ang nagki-claim ng lot na yon, so it's really complicated at the moment. Yan lang ang narinig ko.
Yung sa front lot naman just across the creek, the owners are not interested in selling them. Mga rich Maranao clans daw ang may-ari nun and they obviously don't need millions because they already got many. :D Pero sana lang pagandahin nila tulad nung kay Eltanal ang building kasi masagwa tingnan.

May ceiling pa yon -- kung susundin nila ang design that was submitted to them, which I think they will. Somehow, the pre-fab will be covered with a variety of drops and cove lightings...

The City of the Majestic Falls
Ayo Gunting
It is always pleasantly surprising to note that Iligan City is blessed with a picturesque countryside bordered by a seemingly infinite expanse of sea, adequate amenities complemented by well-paved main roads, warm and hospitable people, and most of all the seemingly seamless majestic waterfalls.
Although it may not often be included on most people’s lists of must-see destinations in the country, its simple charms invite us to take a detour from the usual and allow us to experience a refreshing change of scene.
http://mbweb.alchemy.com.ph/db_images/articles/wf1206517677.gif
Located on the northwestern coast of Mindanao facing Iligan bay, 795 kilometers south of Metro Manila, Iligan is a rare mixture of what is natural, industrial and cultural.
Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz and Congressman Vicente Belmonte, Jr. are now making moves to bring Iligan out of the shadows and position it as a haven and destination for both tourists and investors, what with its rich history, active cultural and art scenes, and numerous waterfalls including the renowned Maria Cristina Falls.
"The city has not been getting the attention it deserves," Congressman Belmonte says. "Information has to reach both domestic and international markets. Tourists have to be updated with Iligan’s latest tourism offerings."
On the other hand, Mayor Laurence Cruz says Iligan is a city with big dreams. "And it has the will and the means to make these dreams come true," he says.
From a small trading and farming town of several thousand inhabitants sixty years ago, it has metamorphosed into an industrial city with more than 300,000 culturally diverse people living and working harmoniously towards their individual and the city’s well being.
Its industrialization came about due to its hydroelectric power plants, which supply the cheapest power in the whole island of Mindanao.
Despite industrialization, Iligan has preserved the beauty of its gifts from nature: its 22 wondrous waterfalls, crystal-clear water springs, and pristine beaches. During its "Diyandi Festival sa Iligan" in 2007, there were numerous unique cultural events which were must-sees for domestic and foreign tourists.
The most accessible of Iligan’s 23 waterfalls is Mimbalut Falls, which is 90 feet high and 18 feet wide. It is located approximately 10.5 kilometers from the city proper
One of Iligan’s main attractions, aside from the brimming falls, is the Maze Resort Parks and Resort, which provides a unique blend of relaxation and fun.
With facilities for the sports-minded and adventurous, Maze is a haven for those who want to spend quality time alone, or in the company of family and friends. Bathed in glorious sunlight and cooled by mountain breeze, one finds idyllic comfort in nature’s bosom amid a collection of colorful birds, exotic flora, and shady fruit trees.
Other attractions are the pools of Timoga, the Anahaw Open Ampitheatre, Tinago Falls, Dodiongan Falls, Limunsudan Falls, Lumbatin Falls, and the Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House, which sits on a 2.5 hectare lot that was transformed into a museum that is open to visitors, and Tatay’s Grill.

Power demand is fast increasing: Medco
By Carlo P. Mallo
THE demand for a more stable power source in Southern Mindanao is reportedly increasing as the region's economy is rapidly growing.
This according to Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) chair Virgilio Leyretana.
Leyretana said Southern Mindanao relies most of its power on hydroelectric power plants in Iligan City, and with the growing economy, he said the region needs an additional 100 megawatts in 2008 alone.
"More dams and power plants are needed," he said.
During the economic briefing held earlier this month with the economic team of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Department of Energy (DOE) reported that the five hydro capacities of the Maria Cristina Falls are not being fully tapped as only two hydro plants are operating.
"Transco (National Transmission Corporation) has been working on it," Leyretana said.
However, it might take another three years before the other three can be tapped, he added.
Leyretana, however, is confident that the P2-billion transmission line project of Transco will help stabilize the power supply in Southern Mindanao.

GearX March 27th, 2008, 12:27 PM Ferronickel plant starts operations (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080327120333.html)
Melody M. Aguiba
The Platinum Group Metals Corp. (PGMC) is projected to earn a revenue of .6 million from its Iligan ferronickel plant over the next five years even as it has started operation of the Deutsche Bank-funded project.
The Iligan plant will be the first ferronickel plant to be put up in the country and will be part of PGMC’s three ferronickel smelting plants, according to a PGMC official. The two other PGMC plants will be located in Danao, Cebu and Manticao, Misamis Oriental.
After having completed its financing from Deutsche Bank, the company is now free to sell the ferronickel to any market. PGMC was earlier considering to commit selling up 80 percent of its ferronickel production from its Iligan plant to BHP Billiton, world’s largest mining firm and third largest nickel producer.
A company official said the plant will give tremendous value-adding opportunities in the local mining industry.
"Nickel ore is sold at only $ 14 per pound, but ferronickel is sold at $ 340. You only have to add a cost of $ 150," the official said.
Located at the Assumption Heights in Buru-un, Iligan City, the ferronickel plant will tap production facilities of MCCI Corp. which has been operating since 1954 until MCCI closed its calcium carbide manufacturing in October 2006.
In a feasibility study, the Iligan plant is projected to post ferronickel production of 18,590 metric tons (MT, with 8.196 million pounds of contained nickel at 20 percent) in 2008; 35,802 MT (8.196 million pounds) in 2009, 49,572 MT (21.857 million pounds) in 2010, and 49,572 MT (21.857 million MT) in 2009.
At an average yearly nickel price of per pound, revenue is seen at .721 million in 2008, .334 milion in 2009, .491 million in 2010, and .442 million in 2011.
It will register an average annual income of 4 million out of which excise tax paid to the government is at P134 million while annual income tax is at P1 billion and annual real property tax, P2.2 million.
"The locality will benefit directly from the one percent of the total production cost as social fund or community development projects amounting to an average of P35 million yearly," said PGMC.
The plant is estimated to generate employment to baranggays Bu-ruun and Maria Cristina for 125 persons initially, reaching to 541 at maximum operational capacity.
The plant has a programmed production cost of P2.27 billion in 2008 of which a large chunk of P989 million is for nickel ore costs, P400 million for smelter material charges, P455 million for power, and P242 million for operating cost contingency. Production cost is seen to increase to P4.04 billion in 2009, P5.57 billion in 2010, and down a little to P5.4 billion in 2011.
Nickel ore that will be fed on the smelter plant will be sourced from PGMC nickel mining operations from Dinapigue in Isabela, Toronto and Pulot properties in Palawan, and Cagdianao in Surigao del Norte, and other sources.
Alingatong March 27th, 2008, 01:51 PM :applause: :applause: I personally regard PGMC as one of the prime movers of Iligan's economic progress.

@Waway, thank you for the pictures. I actually designed the flooring layout of Gaisano Davao - South and it sucks that I haven't seen it on actual. But that was my only participation of that mall. It took me a little over a month of “auto-caddying” the tile layout. I also did one for Dorian Hotel, Davao. Does Dorain still exist today? Heard it was closed sometime 4-5 years ago. By the way, we used Iris Ceramiche Tiles for Gaisano Davao and we imported them from Italy. Those are "Pie 5" ceramic tiles and can withstand heavy traffic. For Dorian Hotel, we used Rex Ceramiche and they're very, very expensive. In fact, the designs were commissioned by Trusardi, the famous Italian couture. Gosh, I have completely forgotten our projects in Davao and that's just a shame. Hehehe!
Gaisano Iligan would somehow look the same inside but we used a different floor tile this time. Of course, if you notice, that's like a 10 year old or so mall. So, we will be using the latest materials available in the market today for Gaisano Iligan. But again, for its interior design, it would generally be just the same, including the ceiling designs, which are NOT bad at all considering that Gaisano Davao is such a fantastic mall in itself.
Got pictures of the exterior of the mall?
WawaY[625] March 28th, 2008, 08:28 AM @Waway, thank you for the pictures. ?
wait..so you worked for "papa ning" too? I worked there from 2004 to 2006 :D or ibang company ang nag design ng interiors ng Gaisano South (JS Gaisano then) :)
MackyK March 28th, 2008, 08:52 AM ;19295697']wait..so you worked for "papa ning" too? I worked there from 2004 to 2006 :D or ibang company ang nag design ng interiors ng Gaisano South (JS Gaisano then) :)
Who's papa ning? Sorry, I haven't met someone by that name. Hehehe! I believe the mall was designed by Palafox, right? I'm particularly pointing out the mall with a complicated tile layout design. I'm not sure which Gaisano Mall was that cause I know there are several Gaisano malls in Davao. But the one I quoted (and reposted) is the one which I designed. And, no, I'm not from Palafox and I had never worked at Palafox. But at that time, I was with Ceramiche' Italiano Group, a company that designs interiors that use Italian products. I forgot the name of our contact at Palafox but I believe she's no longer connected with Palafox now. She migrated to Singapore, the last time I heard about her. :)
im talking about Gaisano South BTW, yung sa ilustre street..the smaller of the 2 gaisano malls :)
MackyK March 28th, 2008, 09:04 AM @Waway, I knew that I designed the tile layout right away because I know that the tiles installed are Iris brands. No Iris tiles would be purchased without passing them through my approval.
It's actually like this. All floor designs would be submitted to us for matches. Then we counter propose with a more "fitted" design. So, the original layout of Palafox would be replaced with the one we submitted. Palafox would then have it approved with the mall owner. It will continue that way until we reach an approval. We usually work with big projects only. :)

@Waway, I was referring to these pictures. What mall is this? This is the one that I designed. But our contact for this project was Palafox in Makati, not Davao office. :)
WawaY[625] March 28th, 2008, 09:16 AM yeah yan nga, Gaisano South Citimall (JS Gaisano CitiMall dati) :)
naguguluhan nga ako eh kasi sa perspective sa billboard eh Manuel Chiew nakalagay (sa pagkakatanda ko) and i even saw the plans sa bodega (worked there 2004-2006)
nakwento din ng boss ko na medyo masungit daw yung isang Gaisano na nakausap nya
pero alam ko rin involved din si Palafox sa design. I never asked them about Palafox's involvement sa pag design ng Mall though..
baka parang sa NCCC Mall ang nangyari where si Manuel Chiew ang nagdesign (general plans) tapos may mga Manila based companys na involved sa detailing (DQT interiors ata)
so maybe Palafox was the overall coordinator sa project? i dunno really kung ano ang setup nyo nung ginawa nyo ang gaisano south

Using the "@" before the username is not mandatory, but sometimes it's just practical. As in your sample message above, it'd be perfectly OK to just say gors because it is obviously a proper name, but not for @tough.

tough March 29th, 2008, 07:53 PM DOST creating larger pool of scientists
By Ma. Margarita Z. Sandejas, Special to The Manila Times
Department of Science and Technology (DOST) Secretary Estrella Alabastro told The Manila Times the Philippine government is doing what it can to create a larger pool of science professionals engaged in research and development.
For years the country’s educational system has been among the world’s largest producers of college graduates. But it is also among those that graduate the least scientists and engineers.
Secretary Alabastro, in an interview, talked about how the country is working its way toward achieving its 21st-century goals.
“We have to get to the root of the matter and move forward from there,” referring to the ills holding back the development of science and technology these past 50 years. Collaborative efforts have been slightly successful in mitigating those problems, but the scarcity of basic information required for industrial development, the small percentage of trained specialists and the lack of public awareness of and interest in S&T, she said, still have to be resolved.
She said it was a pressing matter to disseminate S&T awareness to the average Filipino through formal education or other media. Having the general public aware will also mean lawmakers and local government officials would have to go along with their constituents in seeking to advance S&T development in the country.
Alabastro told The Times that as a government-mandated agency tasked to foresee S&T development on the national level, DOST must prioritize S&T undertakings, particularly in the research and development areas.
“In fact, it is not a matter of budget allocation at all,” she said, “because the President has been very supportive and has given a huge amount for scholarships in these fields. It has more to do with deciding which projects are more important, requiring more work and focus.”
One of DOST’s main thrusts is the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT), a project granting scholarships to engineering students on the masteral and doctorate levels. Alabastro told The Times that for 2008 alone, the government allotted P1.2 billion for ERDT.
The Accelerated Human Resource Development Program (AHRDP) of DOST in turn provides scholarship grants in science courses also on the graduate levels. The allotment for AHRDP this year is P175 million.
ERDT sees scholars through seven schools, namely the University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, Mapua Institute of Technology, Central Luzon State University, University of San Carlos and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology.
As for the undergraduate levels, the government allocation for DOST scholarship grants in science oriented courses this year is P316 million. “This,” Alabastro added, “is to provide financial assistance to poor but excellent students specializing in the fields of science and engineering.”
Although Alabastro lamented that it would be advantageous to have a higher overall budget to address the low expenditure for S&T research and development, she said the President has already expressed great concern for this by upping the budget of P350 million per year normally given to this sector to P750 million in 2007 and P1.8 billion in 2008.
“These,” Alabastro stressed, “are significantly positive developments in themselves. But there are more requirements for us to fulfill in order to move up and we cannot do it in one shot. It’s a gradual process.”
Part of this “gradual process” Alabastro told The Times is the recent construction of the Science complex, which has begun at the University of the Philippines in Diliman. Meanwhile, a budget allocation of P838 million is dedicated to building an Engineering complex, also at the UP for which the blueprint has already been accomplished.
“We use the funds given to us by the Philippine government for leveraging,” said Alabastro. By this, she means allocating larger amounts of the funds to more consequential and highly productive pursuits such as the empowerment of R&D human resources through comprehensive training and the development of R&D infrastructure.
“On DOST’s part, it has to be a very determined and continuous effort. This is a long-term project that can only be achieved through a collaboration of efforts.”
Alabastro added that enhanced scientific and technological competitiveness can only be attained through building up capabilities and the intervention of the education sector, but there has to be the element of the average Filipino’s genuine interest in S&T.
The Science Education Institute of DOST exists to promote a scientific culture among the Filipino community. Its chief intent is to increase the interest and knowledge of the ordinary person in S&T, for him to appreciate science as part of his regular existence. “Not merely as a profession,” Alabastro told The Times.
DOST has been drafting teaching modules in Math and Science, incorporating them recently into the curriculum in public schools, a joint effort with the Department of Education. They have also developed computer-based teaching modules in Math and Science, making them available to students in public schools.
DOST training programs for teachers in Math and Science in both elementary and high-school levels have also been initiated in collaboration with DepEd.
As part of its 50th-year anniversary and in line with the short-term goal of emphasizing the importance of S&T studies in the country and the long-term objective to boost research and development, DOST is recognizing outstanding science educators in all levels this year.
Alabastro told The Times that amplifying our country’s capabilities in S&T will take time and an almost herculean effort. But given the support of the government, the people and the major institutions, making the Philippines reach the scientific progress of more advanced economies is within reach.
The government, Alabastro said, is on the right track, focusing its energies on infrastructure, manpower and R&D.

g0Rs March 29th, 2008, 10:22 PM ILIGAN: CITY OF WATERFALLS (http://www.mbulletin-usa.com/ltmain.asp?ID=518)
Darcy Lawas
Tuesday, February 26, 2008
It’s simply amazing how everything changes with perspective. Back in college, Iligan City was the city of Timoga Falls Resort, a place to swim in cool waters, to relax under towering falls, and to gaze at the green canopy above the cascading waters. Years later, Iligan City was now the city providing close to 75% of the power throughout Mindanao and using up the precious water from the Agus River.
But both realities presently co-exist for Iligan City. The industries it hosted enabled the Philippine economy to surge forward, almost to the status of a newly- industrialized country (NIC) in 50’s and 60’s. These industries established the Philippines as a model for its present day ASEAN counterparts, until Marcos came. Today, as an industrial city, it has stiff competition from other cities that now host newly emerging industries, leaving Iligan City with the older and heavier industries of the post WW II Philippine economy.
Industries in a garden city?
Strange as the notion may sound, Iligan City could easily have been developed as a Garden City given its natural endowments of waterfalls, forest cover and balmy weather. Iligan City belongs to the C type climate (short, low, sun dry season of one to three months, with less than 74 mm. of rainfall from strong weather disturbances). Its average annual temperature is a comfortable 21.68° Celsius.
But electric power determined Iligan City’s path toward becoming an industrial city. Maria Cristina Falls, Iligan’s greatest natural endowment, stands as the icon and landmark of Iligan City. The most resplendent among the 20 waterfalls within the city boundaries, the famous Maria Cristina Falls is also known as the Mother of Industry and Fountainhead of Progress. At 320 feet height and just 9.3 kilometers away from the city proper, it is the very source of industrial power for the city.
The list of major, as in heavy, industries in the city suggests a smokestack skyline, with smog, to boot. The reality is far from this. Iligan City smells like bath soap although the city does look like it could use a bath. How explain this paradox? The city has its myriad waterfalls providing a natural cooling system and its surrounding forest cover absorbing the carbon emissions of the industries but there’s no hiding the rust color of the of heavy industry complexes dispersed around the city.
Iligan stands for heavy industries
The heavy industries defined Iligan City, turning it into a favorite field trip destination for senior mechanical and electrical engineering students. Its convenient distance between several points in the Visayas and Mindanao also made it a favorite employment mecca for the hordes of engineering graduates from the Visayas and Mindanao.
Because of these developments, Iligan City still reads like a power house directory of heavy power plants and even heavier industries. There is the National Power Corporation and its series of Agus Hydroelectric Plants. In particular, there is the Agus IV Hydroelectric Plant in Langka, Balo-I that is the first underground hydroelectric plant in Mindanao, and ensconced some 120 meters below the ground surface. The plant can light up a city more than 12 times the size of Iligan or can power 20 cement factories.
Maria Cristina or Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant in Barangay Maria Cristina, some 9.3 kilometers from the city proper, harnesses the Maria Cristina Falls that plunge 320 feet down, and is the main source of the city’s power. Since 1950, it has a 200-MW potential capacity that provides the city’s power source.
National Steel Corporation in Barangay Suarez some 6.5 kilometers from the city proper is one of the largest steel manufacturers in the ASEAN, located in a 140-hectare area and extends almost about one kilometer vertically.
In addition, there is the Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation, Granexport Manufacturing Corp., at one time, considered the Largest Coconut Mill in the world, Iligan Coconut Oil, one of the two copra solvent extraction plants in the city. There are also the PILMICO Food Corporation, engaged in the processing wheat flour and related products under the US Pillsbury brand name, Refractories Corp. of the Philippines, the only refractory plant in the country and Maria Cristina Chemical Industry, the first and only carbide producer in the Philippines. Finally, there is the Iligan Cement Corp., presently one of the top ten cement producers in the country and the Mindanao Portland Cement Corp. is another cement plant in the city.
Native land and land of the natives
Like almost every other major place in Mindanao, Iligan hides a history of conflict between original settlers and migrants. Unlike many other places in Mindanao, Iligan City and is various peoples and cultures have moved on beyond détente to economic cooperation and growth. Indeed, one easy impression about the city is that it thrives on commerce more than on industry. Evidence the numerous small and not so small retail stores that dot the city streets and well outside the city proper.
Iligan City, the original coastal trading settlement has morphed into a cultural and commercial cross road of the Maranaos of Lanao del Sur, the Higaonons of Bukidnon, and the dominantly Christian settlers and migrants from the Visayas and from various points of Mindanao.
Enjoying the city and its environs
Before exploring the city, one is encouraged to drop by Cheding’s Peanuts for its famous greaseless peanuts roasted in hot sand and its occasional serving of Baboy Sulop, marinated pork of wild pigs. For fast food, there is the original Sunburst Fried Chicken, for those who do not have to worry about their cholesterol count.
Equipped with a picnic basket, one can proceed to a waterfalls tour starting with famous Maria Cristina Falls, then the Timoga Cold Springs, and the smaller Mimbalut and Tinago Falls. Maria Cristina Falls can only be viewed from afar for safety reasons. But the distance of the viewing platform does not diminish the grandeur of the falls.
The famous Timoga Cold Springs hardly needs introduction. Its cool and crystal clear waters freely flow down to several swimming pools. Nothing fancy here like Enchanted Kingdom water flumes; just plain, cool spring water fun in old-fashioned swimming pools. Equally functional amenities include snack bars, cottages, and lechon retail stalls.
The Mimbalut Falls drop approximately 90 feet down in a cascade of water about 18 ft. wide. Although not dramatically huge as a waterfall, still it is very inviting because of its naturally limpid water. The site provides an enjoyable swimming spot just some 11 kilometers from the city proper.
Finally, Tinago Falls. So-named because it is hidden in a deep ravine, the falls cascade beautifully into a basin-like pool, with clean, deep and icy cold water. It has an elevation of approximately 420 feet; 13.8 kilometers from the city proper.
St. Michael’s City
You are in good hands, in Iligan city. It is the City of the Archangel, St. Michael the Archangel. Indeed the city festival is dedicated to St. Michael. Its more specialized form is the “Pana-ad” or literally, vow, represented by the joining of archangels – festival participants who dress up in the warrior angel’s garb associated with St. Michael. Now, mind you, the event is really a religious feast rather than a secular festival. It is a procession, not a parade, so participants do not dance but march as solemnly as warrior angels do, in solid phalanxes, as the armies of the Lord.
Ultimately, it comes down to this: Iligan City is one vast garden landscaped to host a vast industrial infrastructure so vital to Mindanao and the rest of the country.

He bikes for peace

Even with a heart condition, this Redemptorist priest has a message to deliver on wheels.
Embarking on a 56-day bike campaign from Davao City to Aparri and back, Fr. Amado Picardal is bringing his message on the sanctity of human life and peace.
“I am appealing to all communities to work for peace,” said the Davao-based Redemptorist who stopped over in Cebu City on Friday.
At age 54, he said he has no illusions that his bike campaign would change the world.
“I am thinking only that I could relay my message about life,” he said.
Picardal, a native of Iligan, biked for peace in 2000 during the term of former president Joseph Estrada to oppose the government’s “all-out war” policy.
“I biked from Davao to Pagudpud, Ilocos during Erap’s time to oppose the prevailing culture of death, violence and corruption,” he said.
Picardal began a new campaign on March 24 despite a heart ailment.

Alingatong March 31st, 2008, 05:58 AM DepEd receives P14.8-M of support from Aboitiz Group
Pasig City (31 March) -- The Department of Education (DepEd), through the Adopt-A-School Program, received a total of P14,800,138 worth of interventions from the Aboitiz Group Foundation, Inc (AGFI) and members of the Aboitiz Group of Companies. These interventions comprised the bulk of the P 16.5 Million worth of reported completed projects coursed through the Adopt-A-School Program in 2007.
Last August, 2007, AGFI, the Aboitiz' member companies and DepEd signed a Memorandum of Agreement in Cebu, which marked a partnership that aims to enhance the quality of learning in selected public schools nationwide through interventions that cater to a wide variety of learning needs.
To promote learning, AGFI and member-company Fil-Am Foods Inc recently held a Farmer's Edge Quiz Bee and provided library kits to three elementary schools in Tarlac City.
The Aboitiz Power Corporation provided five schools in Cebu City with Multimedia Packages. Also, selected students from Region 7 were given scholarships and financial assistance.
To address the high student-classroom ratio in Davao City, Davao del Norte and Cebu, Davao Light and Power Company, Inc constructed two 3-room, a 4-room school building, computer laboratories and equipment.
Elementary children from two schools in Pasay City and Paranaque City are now benefitting from P 444,225 worth of library kits, provided by the Aboitiz One, Inc – a transport and logistics solutions provider.
"This is a clear proof that many people are prepared to invest in the country's future – our students," DepEd Secretary Jesli Lapus said in a statement.
Numerous projects and programs that aim to upgrade public education has been one of priorities of the Aboitiz Group, through its Corporate Social Responsibility Arm – the Aboitiz Group Foundation, Inc. These interventions are being implemented in order to address the needs of less privileged communities, particularly where Aboitiz Companies operate.
AGFI Managing Trustee, Mr. Sonny Carpio reiterated the need and the importance of the private sector to contribute to the improvement of public education. In a statement, he said, "It is now apparent that the private sector fill in the gaps in the area of public education because of the limited resources of the government. We have to support education in general as this is where we can be assured of quality employees in the future".
Support from AGFI also include: Cotabato Light and Power Company Inc gave about P700,000 worth of assistance to 6 schools in Maguindanao and Cotabato City; 19 elementary and secondary schools in Benguet, Davao and Cebu benefited from P1.3M worth of assistance from Hedcor, Inc. Pilmico Foods Corp provided P6.4 million worth of donations to seven secondary schools in Iligan and Cebu. Donations from the power sector service of the Aboitiz Group included Hedcor Inc amounting to P1,299,742; Aboitiz Power Corporation with P930,700; Davao Light and Power Company, Inc, with P4,500,525.
DepEd Secretary Lapus expressed his gratitude for the support of the private sector in improving public education and noted that the 20 million student population under DepEd's care will be the country's future leaders and workforce in the next fifty years. "We thank our Adopt-A-School benefactors even as we appeal for more partners."
These engagements are being coursed through DepEd's Adopt-A-School Program, which facilitates private-public sector partnerships for education. In 2007, it has generated about P4.05 billion worth of contributions, commitments, ongoing and completed projects from the private sector, surpassing the P2.1 billion generated by the program from 2000-2006.
Relaunched in September 2006 by Secretary Lapus, the Adopt-A-School Program expansion opened more private sector involvement in improving public education. It advocates for the involvement of stakeholders, most especially at the community level, all aimed at uplifting the quality of education in the country. (PIA)

tough March 31st, 2008, 07:21 PM ‘Earth Hour’ observation in RP saved 56MWh of energy - WWF
03/31/2008 | 11:55 PM
MANILA, Philippines - The country was able to save an estimated 56MWh of energy and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by as much as 30 tonnes in Luzon alone as more than a million Filipinos observed “Earth Hour" last Saturday night.
This was according to Yeb Saño, head of the World Wildlife Fund Climate Change and Energy Programme, who described the result as “nothing short of amazing."
At least 50 major cities and towns nationwide switched off lights to join the rest of the world for “Earth Hour" last Saturday. They joined key cities in Europe, America and Asia.
Saño said the energy saved during the event is equivalent to shutting down an entire coal-fired power plant.
“Filipinos truly showed the world that we can unite and stand together against climate change. Government, civil society, businesses and millions of individuals have made Earth Hour Philippines an overwhelming success," Saño said.
The flagship cities of Pasay, Manila and Parañaque held a switch-off ceremony and enveloped the entire Roxas Boulevard seaside strip in symbolic darkness. Makati followed suit with its own set of celebrations.
Across the nation, lights-off activities were instigated.
Aside from the four flagship cities, the following areas reported holding their own switch-off
celebrations, though more probably joined in: Mandaluyong, Quezon City, Caloocan, Marikina, Gen. Trias, Bais, Dumaguete, Dipolog, Zamboanga, Iligan, Talisay, Escalante, Baguio, Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Tarlac, Laoag, Cadiz, San Fernando and Bauang in La Union, San Fernando in Pampanga, Santiago, San Jose in Nueva Ecija, Naga, Legazpi, Iriga, Calbayog, Ormoc, Samal, Tangub and Bongao in Tawi-Tawi.
“We should be proud of ourselves and the Philippines for making a stand. For those that weren’t able to join – I invite you to get ready for next year," Saño said. - GMANews.TV

gatulay March 31st, 2008, 11:45 PM Mas ok na nga ngayon dahil marami na rin nightspots, arcades, etc. etc. compared nung 1999-2004. Sinyales na bumubuti ang economy ng iligan.
:cheers:Balik na ba ang "Beer pa day, isa ka case...ablihi daan"? and from the other table, one hears the words..."Marlboro day, isa ka kaha...dagkuti daan"...Those were the days...
Alingatong April 1st, 2008, 02:57 AM Hahaha! Iba na diskarte ngayon @gatulay. By set na. At hindi na rin taga planta ang mga parokyano kundi mga estudyante. :)
TONZI April 1st, 2008, 06:41 AM Isang mall pa that's as HUGE as Gaisano Mall-Iligan at may "laban" na ang Iligan City nyan. Yan na siguro ang time na dadami ang hotels at magkaroon ang Iligan ng isang tertiary level hospital. Madadag-dagan din ang first-class subdivision sa city kung saan meron lang dalawa sa ngayon (New Frontier and Andrada Heights.) Medyo bullish ako sa Iligan lalo na kung magiging totoo yung sinasabing airport sa Laguindingan.
@mackyk saan kaya itong mall na 'to i-construct? di kaya ito ung sinasabi nila na malapit sa gaisano mall?
