I hope more and more shows will feature Tinago Falls. Ibex April 1st, 2008, 09:39 AM I have heard good comments from my friends who have been to Tinago Falls... If I have the chance I would really love to go there. They also told me about the hundreds of steps you have to go through to get there and back...errr (the latter is harder) :):):) http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/63/iligancdo023asw6.jpg (http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/63/iligancdo023asw6.jpg)Image Source: Kulaskusgan Farirah April 1st, 2008, 01:06 PM Isang mall pa that's as HUGE as Gaisano Mall-Iligan at may "laban" na ang Iligan City nyan. Yan na siguro ang time na dadami ang hotels at magkaroon ang Iligan ng isang tertiary level hospital. Madadag-dagan din ang first-class subdivision sa city kung saan meron lang dalawa sa ngayon (New Frontier and Andrada Heights.) Medyo bullish ako sa Iligan lalo na kung magiging totoo yung sinasabing airport sa Laguindingan. That's true! I love to hear this all over again from you. :D Maybe you're referring likewise to incoming superb industrial CdeO-Iligan Corridor. ^^ Anyway, I envy somehow the huge, classy and modern GMall Iligan out there compared to our Gaisano here. :nocrook: Alingatong April 1st, 2008, 01:56 PM ^^Thanks @Ibex and @Kulaskusgan for the very refreshing Tinago Falls pics. The man-sized Rizal statue was removed some years ago. But now the national hero is back at the park. A bronze bust of Rizal has been put in place. And now with Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz at the helm, the plaza has been transformed into a beautiful promenade ideal for strolling. The once bare pebble ground has been paved with marble tiles all over the entire interior ground (photo below). It's now spic and span and well lighted at night. There's also a small tower that houses the Iligan City Tourism Information Center under which are public comfort rooms for men and women. The improvement of the park, a pet project of the present administration, was undertaken at the cost of P2,304,000.00. http://www.geocities.com/lchsspectrum/plazanew.jpg A view of the Iligan public plaza and its new tile flooring. Ngayon yata marami na bago... Alingatong April 4th, 2008, 02:30 PM ^^Although new restaurants are mushrooming all over the city, standouts pa rin ang mga na-mention mo (isama na natin ang Big Dipper). They're still Iliganons' favorite siguro dahil sa homegrown, may local na character at affordable pa. Alingatong April 4th, 2008, 02:45 PM Iligan CLIC teachers again top national Microsoft contest By Bob on Apr 4, 2008 in News ILIGAN CITY—This Mindanao city again swept the finals at Microsoft’s annual nationwide search for educators who are blazing trails in the use of information technology (IT) in classroom teaching. Fedelyn Gomez of Tomas Cabili National High School and Julius Hechanova of Iligan City East High School-Sta. Filomena are two of the three teachers chosen by Microsoft to represent the Philippines this April at the Asia-Pacific conference of the Innovative Teachers Leadership Award (ITLA). Gomez’ winning entry was designed to help students create a business plan and related multimedia materials for an animal production enterprise. Hechanova designed a micro-lesson involving word problems in trigonometry. Every year, through ITLA and its Partners In Learning program, Microsoft picks three teachers who have devised creative approaches for integrating IT into classroom instruction. And every year since 2005, public school teachers from the Iligan City division of the Department of Education have cropped up among the 10 ITLA finalists, besting dozens of competitors from across the country. Iligan’s winning streak began when Sherlita Daquisonan of Iligan City East High School- Hinaplanon came first in the competition. Two other teachers made it to the magic circle in 2006; another was the frontrunner in 2007. This year, Iligan teachers swept up six of the top ten spots. What they all have in common, apart from their superior teaching skills, is that their schools are assisted by the Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (CLIC) program of the U.S. Agency for International Development. CLIC, a component of USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM-3) Program, has provided IT packages for 668 schools throughout the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao and other conflict-affected areas in Mindanao. The CLIC package for each school may include up to 10 computers. They also get a printer, local area network, internet access (which includes installing a satellite dish if necessary), books on computers and the internet, and IT-related training for teachers. While the GEM Program is not involved in the ITLA search, it has a continuing partnership with Microsoft, which provides discounted software and training through CLIC. The combination of hardware, internet access and training, Gomez says, helped spark the creative rush among the teachers of the Iligan City division of the Department of Education. Twenty-three schools in the division have been assisted by CLIC. “Through the group training, we could share and discuss ideas for incorporating IT in teaching different courses,” she says. “There was a lot of mutual support among the teachers, and from division administrators.” She also credits the students of her business technology class, who each submitted a business plan in PowerPoint, a two-page brochure on a particular animal breed and its care–using information culled from the internet–and a marketing flyer. The students’ projects were part of Gomez’ ITLA entry, which she submitted online and presented to a panel of judges in Manila. “The students put everything into completing their class work and those who got to use the computers earlier helped guide the others,” she recalls. “They were thrilled that their individual projects could be viewed online by anyone in the world. The award wouldn’t have been possible without them—it’s their award.” Very few of her students have access to IT outside the school, says Gomez. “Those who can afford internet cafés have to wait their turn, and it’s hard to concentrate with all the gaming going on.” In the school’s computer lab, students could work without distraction, and be guided in the research and drafting of their output. “The ‘internet mining’ application of the CLIC training was useful in teaching them how to segregate useful information,” Gomez says. “Most of these students will not be able to afford college,” she points out, “But because of this class and the use of the computers and internet, already they are capable of college-level work in business planning and marketing using IT.” “The CLIC package provides an entry into the global information society.” says Robert Barnes, USAID Economic Growth Adviser. “It enables students to function effectively in an increasingly competitive economy.” Lydia Pulgo, one of Gomez’ students, says she is now confident about starting an animal production business of her own. She adds: “I can raise capital by working as an encoder or online researcher, using what I learned in class.” Gelbie Binotong, a third-year student who had no experience of computers before high school, believes her new IT knowledge will help her in finding a call center job after graduation. This April, the two ITLA winners from Iligan and Noemi Bagayaua of Cembo Elementary School in Makati will be flying to Hanoi, Vietnam, to compete with regional finalists from 22 countries. Only one Philippine representative will be selected for the worldwide finals, to be held in Thailand later this year. “On the plane to Manila for the national finals, we said to each other that we had already won, even if we didn’t make it to the top,” Gomez says. “The students, our school, our division—we’re all winners.” mindanao.com (http://www.mindanao.com/blog/?p=3593) Alingatong April 5th, 2008, 05:36 AM Guys, tapos na pala ang bidding for Phase 1 ng C3. Balane/MindaNews Saturday, 05 April 2008 18:23 MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews / April 4) - Provincial board members here scored the National Economic Development Authority for excluding a major road project in Bukidnon from among the priority projects under the Mindanao "Super Region" development strategy. "It is a bit disturbing that new projects have been prioritized but the Super region isn't addressing our problem with the national highway," Board Member Roland Deticio told an open forum during the province’s regular session . Deticio cited the rehabilitation of the 130-kilometer portion of the national Sayre Highway which he said was not included among the priority projects of the Super region “even if new road projects have been earmarked in the region”. NEDA officials were asked to update the provincial legislators of the projects under the Super region and legislators were dismayed that no major infrastructure project was lined up for Bukidnon. Deticio described the exclusion a "mockery". The Sayre Highway, the stretch of road from Puerto in Cagayan de Oro to Dologon in Maramag, Bukidnon, would be rehabilitated, upgraded and widened to solve the problems of access and public safety. Last month, Presidential Assistant for Northern Mindanao Pacifico T. Pupos Jr. announced the target completion of major infrastructure projects and the list included the P7.853-billion Laguindingan International Airport Development Project in Misamis Oriental; the P173-million Ozamiz City Airport Development Project in Misamis Occidental; the P572.87-million Cagayan de Oro Port Development Project; and the P2.670-billion Panguil Bay Bridge Project in Misamis Occidental. Other projects also included the P861-million Iligan City Circumferential Road in Lanao del Norte; the P12.731-million Lanao del Norte Provincial Hospital; Jatropha Nurseries in Bukidnon; the P1.682-billion Agus 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant in Pantas, Lanao del Norte; and the P1.856-billion Agus 6 Hydroelectric Power Plant Uprating Project in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte. Board Member Camilo Pepito said the Arroyo administration's economic program has promised new projects “yet it cannot prioritize existing projects that play an important role in the economy of the province and Mindanao”. Board Member Glenn Peduche said it was ironical that the province was considered a food basket for Mindanao “and yet its national highway is dilapidated”. Ro Ann Bacal, NEDA 10 regional director, said the Regional Development Council did not receive a proposal from Bukidnon's Provincial Development Council as of 2006 when the projects for the Super region were collated by the RDC based on priority projects from LGUs. However, a source at the Provincial Planning and Development Office who asked not to be named for lack of authority to speak on the matter told MindaNews the need to widen and upgrade the highway starting from Puerto has already reached the RDC between 2005 and 2006. "There is still time to continue pushing for the (Sayre Highway) project," Bacal said reminding local governments not to take the planning process lightly. Bacal said their mandate was on projects that cross provincial boundaries. She promised, however, to coordinate with the Department of Public Works and Highways for updates on the matter. Engr. Jerry Acuña, from the DPWH 1st Engineering District maintenance section, confirmed to MindaNews that there was no proposal on the full rehabilation of the highway and that they were only doing their regular maintenance work in certain sections. Deticio told MindaNews the portion requiring rehabilitation was finished in 1985 and should have been replaced in 2000 with a 15-year lifespan. (Walter I. You start from manila going south through the SLEX, passing through Quezon province, the Camarines provinces, albay and sorsogon. We took the ferry from Matnog, sorsogon to Allen, Samar. From northern samar, you cross the San Juanico bridge over Leyte(passing through Tacloban). You then take the second ferry ride from Liloan to Lipata (near surigao city) in surigao del norte. From there, it is smooth drive from surigao city to Butuan, gingoog, CDo and iligan. I can't tell you the conditions of the roads right now, but as far as I can remember, the roads in Quezon are not very good. Bella’s Kitchen Chicken Ati-Atihan with a spacious native-inspired ambiance boasting of a more relaxed feel mostly in earth tones and situated in a 300-square meter lot is initially open to serve the public at 10:00 o’clock in the morning until 10:00 in the evening but is thinking up opening as early as 7:00 AM with some all-time favorite Filipino breakfast meals for the early bird. Customers can soon take pleasure in the relaxing sound from featured acoustic bands on certain evenings. Bella’s Kitchen Chicken Ati-Atihan’s soft opening on Wednesday, March 26, pulled in quite a multitude of people who were either in a hurry, far from home, love dining out alone or with family or friends, or just seeking a break from the routine and predictability of home cooking. The experience became a byword for good taste in just a span of two days making its successful March 28 official opening day which kicked off with a motorcade around the city’s main streets followed by a ribbon-cutting ceremony with no less than Congressman Vicente ‘Varf’ Belmonte as special guest of honor. With grilled chicken as its specialty and the slogan, “We did not invent barbecue. We perfected it!”, the restaurant chain is distinguished by its emphasis on taste, uniformity of low cost menu, with an identifiable flavor, aroma and texture which is characteristically Chicken Ati-atihan. Just what exactly is Chicken Ati-Atihan all about? To avid grilled chicken enthusiasts, Chicken Ati-Atihan, is known for its distinctive taste of juicy chicken marinated through a quality standard procedure with a taste perfected from the splash of its sauce making a mouth-watering meal served with rice and papaya pickles… a combination which will surely make your meal a feast. Indeed, "Sasayaw ka sa Sarap!" as its secondary tagline says. Unlike other Chicken Ati-Atihan outlets in the country, Bella’s Kitchen has modified the standard menu to cater to non-pork eaters especially muslims from surrounding areas who frequent Iligan and it is seeking hallal certification making it appeal to many Iliganon folks, visitors and suburbans. Bella’s Kitchen Chicken Ati-Atihan, owned and managed by Doris Camila Badelles, has an estimated capacity of 150 guests and accepts catering for special occasions. Chicken Ati-Atihan which envisions itself to be “one of the most prestigious, yet affordable, sought-after Family Filipino restaurants wherever it may open its doors in the Philippines, and around the world” has now over 40 outlets nationwide and still growing. The business was inspired by the festive spirit which Kalibo Aklan has been famous for, with pioneer branches in Dumaguete. CAGAYN DE ORO, PHILIPPINES, Apr 11, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX) -- Waste Recovery, Inc. (PINKSHEETS: WRII), a Texas Corporation, will File its 8K for a Name Change to GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc. and its Acquisition/Disposition of Assets. Waste Recovery (WRII) entered into an agreement on April 8, 2008 to acquire 100% of GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc. (GGRE) in exchange for 9,500,000 super voting preferred shares and 1,000,000 post reverse split shares of Waste Recovery, Inc. Waste Recovery will reorganize so that every shareholder holding 10,000 common shares of WRII will receive 1 new unrestricted and 10 new restricted GGRE common shares in exchange thereof. GGRE currently controls through joint venture agreements, approximately 3,000 hectares of land in Mindanao Island and 300 hectares in Batan Island of which Jatropha seedlings have been planted. GGRE is now preparing the 3,000 hectares of land as GGRE's Jatropha Plantation. Another 10,000 hectares are in the process for acquisition in Bukidnon, Mindanao Island. As a part of the Agreement, Waste Recovery will change its name to GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc. (GGRE) and has appointed new officers and directors effective April 8, 2008. The GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc. (GGRE) Company is a growing international green technology and environmental energy company that is working to fully utilize both agricultural oil-based mineral resources and alternative energy sources produced from sugarcane, coconut, Jatropha, sweet Sorghum and other crops. GGRE is considered as a development-stage company and will remain in this status until revenues are generated from the first Jatropha productions begin: estimated production is during the Fall of 2008. GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc. (GGRE) shall be one of the foremost biodiesel, biofuels, and biogas companies in the Philippines, seeking an equilibrium between the current oil-based technologies biodiesel, biofuels, biogas, and utilizing long-term partnerships by harnessing the involvement of private groups, local governments and host communities, achieving consistent profitability, and making its contribution to the delight of its shareholders, customers, employees, and the environment. BIODIESEL PRODUCTION Company Field Director Rey Oliva managed the planting of the first Jatropha seedlings in the 300 hectares of land of the Island of Batan. Additional 3,000 hectares of land are being prepared for Jatropha plantation. There are another 10,000 hectares being offered for acquisitions in the Island of Mindanao to become a third Jatropha Plantation. Batan Island is a rich island with feedstocks include copra (dried coconut kernel), available in plentiful supply in that area, and the plentiful berries of the easily propagated Jatropha plant, known to be similar to fossil fuel in their chemical composition and requiring a short cycle from planting to harvest (approximately 7 months). GGRE is cooperating with the Philippines Department of Science & Technology (DOST) toward a design of the proposed biodiesel fuel production plant, and the company's engineers and environmental consultants will conduct an investigation into the environmental effects of cultivating the Jatropha plant on a commercial scale. GreenGold Ray Energies, Inc.'s (GGRE) mission and vision is to partner with the Philippine government and local host communities to acquire land for manufacturing/distribution facilities of alternative energy products. In addition, GGRE is involved in providing products and services targeting the resource-rich yet fiscally poor host communities in order to create orderly and sustainable jobs, with manufacturing of bio-fuels, biodiesel and biogas that promote the growth of this high-potential energy industry in the Philippines, and the design and construction of wind energy power plants to supply electricity to remote areas throughout the Philippines. The recent enactment in January 2007 of Republic Act No. 9367, otherwise known as "An Act to Direct the Use of Biofuels, Establishing for this purpose the Biofuel Program...", has sparked interest in the Alternative or Renewable Energy Sector in the Philippines. This has resulted in some foreign companies setting up biofuel production facilities in areas with vast sugarcane fields (raw material for bioethanol), coconut plantations (raw material for biodiesel), and Jatropha (raw material for biodiesel). A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the 300 hectares lot owners in Batan Island, Albay and with the KAHIB indigenous people association of Binasan, Iligan City, Mindanao, Philippines with a land area of 3,000 hectares had been designated to be developed as Jatropha Plantations, providing raw materials for the production of biofuel. Our portfolio of products and services is mainly comprised of electricity biodiesel, biofuels and biogas. While electricity still accounts for a great majority of the world's energy needs, biofuel technologies are rapidly emerging to provide preferred alternatives and environment friendly substitutes for oil-based fuels. This diversification in product lines bodes well for our future viability and growth. We are continuing to identify and assess new potential biofuel/biogas manufacturing sites for the geographic relevance and operational efficiency. We are in the search for more vast lands to plant raw materials such as Jatropha and Sorghum to be use in the production of biodiesel. Products: (1) Biofuels: Fuels, produced from renewable biological resources such as crops, biomass, or wastes. Most widely used are bioethanol and biodiesel. This is expected to become a significant source of revenue for the Company because of the growing trend toward the use of biofuels in lieu of petroleum products, mainly due to environmental concerns. (2) Biogas: Gas produced from garbage/waste, animal manures, grass/leaves, community waste. As an added benefit, through waste management implemented to produce fuel, environmental pollution is ameliorated. "Our Global focus is designed to allow us to be responsive to demands for the resources/products we extract and/or produce. This is calculated to permit us to exercise significant control in our forecasts of supply and demand in the world oil and biofuels/biogas and electricity markets. We believe that the expanding demand in the transportation sector, especially in emerging countries, for fuels will continue at an unprecedented rate. Our sale of biofuels will become our major revenue-generating business," exclaimed CEO R. Bernard. For more information about Jatropha Oil visit: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jatropha_biodiesel. The source claimed they have encouraged Boza to run for city mayor due to the following grounds and reasons, that the present administration supposedly has no political will in the implementation of development plans and the incumbent city has delegated his executive powers to the members of the Sangguniang Panglungsod and the legislative council thereby affecting the effective implementations of development plans of the city government. In prioritizing the acquisitions of new vehicles and other “not needed” priority projects by this administration, it has affected the salaries of the contractual workers by non payment and many people in the various barangays, especially in the hinterlands are living in poverty that basic services are not delivered, the source added. The source said that they have also questioned the hiring of city government consultants who are supposedly paid on a case-to-case or piece work basis, but it seems and they seem like regular employees. On the other hand, the source said that they will organize a political party with an ideology of platforms and programs not traditional politics which is based on personality and patronage, so they can uplift the living conditions of the people and address the poverty problem. That their political party in 2010 must have the principle and philosophy of transparent governance for the benefit of the people and its constituencies, the source said. With this program, the people would be enlightened with new progressive politics to elevate their political maturity and awareness wherein they they could now elect a candidate with a party platform and programs that aimed to benefit the various sectors of our society and the people in general, the source said. It is approximately 90 ft. and 18 ft. wide. A breathtaking place to commune with nature, and take a dip in the cool fresh water pools around the area. An untapped paradise waiting to be discovered or rediscovered for the balikbayans! We were lucky enough that no one was washing their clothes when we were there. Best time to go is morning to 4pm.. before the locals come in with tuba or gin to drink at the side of the falls.. Tesiorna SOME sectors in Davao City may be criticizing the Davao City Water District (DCWD) for some reasons or another, but in Iligan City they are all praises for the technical assistance the water utility has rendered for the Iligan's waterworks system. In a resolution passed by the Iligan City Council, they praised DCWD and its technical staff "for their all-around support, including their technical assistance," for their inputs in designing a major waterworks system. It was learned that Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz is embarking on a P500 million waterworks system in an effort to address the city's future water needs. The Iligan City Waterworks System (ICWS) reportedly requested the DCWD and its in-house experts to validate its blueprint. "Engineers Rey Chavez, manager of Engineering and Construction, and Ronald Munoz gave their utmost support in reviewing the Engineering and Analysis using the facilities and capabilities of DCWD," the resolution stated. The Iligan councilors also noted that DCWD personnel toured their ICWS counterparts "of their facilities and provided engineering documents to help in the implementation of the Iligan waterworks project". "Without the DCWD's earnest support to the ICWS personnel, their visit to Davao would not have been that fruitful and successful," the councilors said in their resolution. In a statement, DCWD general manager Rodora Gamboa said the ICWS's commendation "reflects our commitment to professionalism and our dedication to the public interest. Such a gesture of appreciation humbles and at the same time inspires us at DCWD to work harder for our customers." Gamboa lamented the fact that some sectors are not happy with how DCWD is rendering their service, which in other areas are being hailed. In a casual talk Saturday, Gamboa said they first hesitated in making the Iligan resolution public but said it's high time that the public know the accolades they are getting from other areas just so as to prove that their water district here in Davao City is still the among the best water districts in the country. Siguro, once matapos na ang C3 na dadaan mismo sa IBJT, baka dumami na ang interesado at mag-boboom na ang area. :) BobNewYorkUSA April 15th, 2008, 06:05 AM I have just returned from my visit to Iligan City. After two years of " Websurfing Iligan " I finally arrived there " In Person ". Over the course of two years I was able to make some genuine friends there who welcomed me with open arms and toured me all over the city proper and to nearby attractions that I have viewed here on SSC and many other websites. This time instead of looking at pictures on an internet screen, I became part of the pictures ! It is a thrill to have that feeling that compares to nothing else in the world. Everything I wanted to see, many of which had been prompted by your pics seen here I was able to see and experience. I got my wish of taking a ride on a jeepney to go to Jollibee for Hamburgers ( and a lot more hehehe ). I toured MSU-IIT for 4 hours, Descended and climbed the approx. 400 steps to Tinago Falls ( with a few breaks to catch my breath LOL ) , saw the Spring Fed Pools at Timoga Park, and much more. My stay at the Elena Tower Hotel proved to be the best possible location I could have asked for waking up each morning with the telescopic sign at Jollibee Tibanga staring me in the face made my day ! Having an Internet Cafe right next to Elena Tower was a big plus as I had never experienced an Internet cafe before and I visited quite a few of them as to me they were also an attraction. Many of my evenings in Iligan City were spent at CLub 7 also right next to Elena Tower proved to be a perfect place for me to have a few San Miguels and gather with genuine friends I had made in Iligan during the prior two years of websurfing. The service and attention to detail by the friendly and polite wait staff were " First Class " for a venue of this type. As I am not really into " Rock Joints " or todays " Dance Clubs " , the Live and Local entertainment featured at Club 7 suited my taste perfectly. I recieved a personal invitation from Mayor Lawrence LL Cruz to meet him at City Hall, have a tour of City Hall and other buildings in the City Hall Complex and this was one of the highlights of my visit. Once again, it enabled me to visit and see things that are of particular interest to me which may not always appear on tourist maps and brochures. Since the initial activation of the City-Wide security camera system I have regularly viewed the cams available on the Internet from my home half way around the world from Iligan City. My visit enabled me to look at the cams positioned at City Hall, The Plaza, and Quezon & Roxas. It was a real thrill for me to see the actual cams and be in their view instead of just looking at the output of the cams on the internet at home. From now on when I view them I will be able to sense the sound, the climate, and all of my other senses of actually being there. As this was my first venture to a tropical climate and the part of the world where Iligan City is, I had visited a " Travel Doctor " here in the USA a few weeks prior to my long journey to Iligan City. In addition to recieving 4 vaccinations, I was issued several packages of text information with many advisories to avoid becoming ill from potential bacteria, organisms, parasites etc. not commonly found in the Northeast USA where I live. These advisories included such things as not drinking any tap water or anything made with it such as ice cubes, coffee, etc and best to drink bottled ( purified ) water only. Also to avoid undercooked and raw foods and most seafood. No dairy products as they may or may not have pasteurized and that included ice cream. I had researched Jollibee Foods Corp and with their varied menue, their reputation to uphold, and their well established reputation I felt from the start that if nothing else, most menu selections at Jollibee would be ok for me. Little by little, starting with a couple of plain burgers and krispy fries I expanded my variety of Jolli-Food even to include Jolli-Zert ( Ice Cream Based ). I had waited so long to go to Jollibee ( we dont have them in my part of the world ) I was willing to take the gamble and I never once had the slightest digestive discomfort or sickness of any kind during my entire stay in Iligan City. I asked the manager at Jollibee Tibanga about their water and I was informed they had a special tap connected to an " in house " purification system and I was offered to view their most recent water analysis documentation if I wished to. A little at a time and with the advice of my friends in Iligan a few days later I visited some other dining establishments in Iligan that I had seen in pics and videos such as Big Ben, Lai Lai, a few others I can not remember at the moment. Second to Jollibee, my most memorable Iligan eatery would have to be Zoeys Cafe. Real home style cooking, supurb service, a clean and bright interior with the tables I sat at in excellent condition ( no noticeable wear on table surfaces, chairs etc. ) and very pleasant conversation with the owner and staff. Amoungst other things, I particularly enjoyed the Lasagnia and Carot Cake . What about the precautions I had recieved about consuming dairy products ( cheese in the lasagnia and icing on the carrot cake ) ? NO Problem at Zoeys Cafe or any of the other restaurants I went to in Iligan City although I did linit my intake to one serving of each item at a time. I cetainly appreciate the " generous " size serving of Carrot Cake as it is one of my favorites. I do not consider myself to be the typical tourist. Yes I do enjoy seeing some tourist sites although I am more interested in seeing everyday things and experience some of what the people that live there experience to gain some kind of insight to the realities of life there. Thanks to my extensive websearching of Iligan City, the genuine friendships I have made there which I feel form a diverse group of people of different ages and backgrounds a better experience could not be purchased at any price. As with any vacation the time seemed to go by so quickly. Many thanks to this SSC Group for your informative posts and pics. When I figure out how to post pics here I will include some taken during my visit. I look forward to returning to Iligan City in the future. I was glad to experience the existing Gaisano Dept Store before it is relocated to the soon to open Gaisano Mall. To sumarize and speaking from my own experience I found Iligan City to be " Simply Amazing ! " Thanks for the very nice words Bob. TONZI April 15th, 2008, 09:42 AM its so nice to hear that some people recognized the usefulness of SSC...thanks for that nice commendation Bob! and a round of applause to Iligan SSC forumers!!! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ i would like to comment about our North and South bus terminals. The IBJT North has the capacity to hold traffic for both north and south bound buses. I dont think the project of the South Bound terminal is really needed as of this moment but they pursued with it and the govt is actually spending on it at the same time wasting that investment to the owner's of the lot which reportedly to be of the Lluch's. Perhaps, the south bound terminal as of this moment is not a necessity to build with regard to the capacity of the North Bound terminal to handle the terminal traffic for both north and south bound buses and jeeps. The building of the south bound terminal even put more effect to the existing problems that the North Bound project had during the time of Mayor Quijano. I'm only pointing out to the value for money in investing the government money. We need to think of ways on what is an appropriate project for the moment without wasting government money. If the North Bound Terminal had problems, then our officials should look for ways on not to inflict more problems on it. Anyhow, they have pursued the South Bound project but at least in the future they should think of a good planning that's appropriate to the city's current needs without wasting government money. Organized under the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines, the local legislative officers have continued to facilitate innovations in local government, chiefly through the introduction of information and communication technologies in legislation and in assisting the local chief executives implement ordinances and deliver basic services. Today, the League of Vice Mayors of the Philippines, in holding their 17th National Convention, revisit the best practices in e-governance and discuss means to further improve local governance processes through Information and Communications Technology (ICT) applications. With the theme "Excellence in Local Legislation through Information and Communications Technology,’’ discussions in the plenary sessions will include the presentation of e-governance outcomes applied in LGUs. An important database, the e-Legis Reference System, and the template to measure local government performance, the Department of Interior and Local Government’s Local Government Performance Management System, will also be presented. The Philippine National Police will also provide the vice mayors a view of the current state of peace and order in the nation. We congratulate the Vice Mayors’ League of the Philippines led by its National President Iligan City Vice Mayor Henry C. Lots of people tell me that they want to live in the Philippines, and rightly so. The tropical and laid back lifestyle is really wonderful, and is something that I’ve come to love. However, once you have decided to live in the Philippines, you have yet another decision ahead of you! Where in the Philippines? The Philippines consists of some 7,107 different islands, not all of which are inhabited. As a matter of fact, the number of islands even varies along with the tides. So, out of all of those various islands, which one will you live on? And, even further beyond that, once you settle on an island, which City will you choose? MoneySense Magazine, a Philippine publication, in it’s March/April 2008 issue has a feature about “The Best Places to Live” in the Philippines. It seems that this topic is always popular, and readers can never get enough information, so I thought I’d have a look! For this article, the magazine lists the top 20 Cities in the Philippines, in terms of livability. They go further by doing a write up about each of the top 10. In other words, there is a detailed article about each of the Top 10 Cities, with a mention of the second 10 as well. Let’s have a look at the Magazine’s choice as the Top 10 Cities to live in, and the reasons that make them great (followed by the remaining of the Top 20): Bacolod City: Friendly people, laid back lifestyle, easy access to nearby vacation destinations. (Population 454,000) Makati City: Financial and business center, cosmopolitan culture, excellent infrastructure. (Population 471,000) Davao City: Low crime rate, clean environment, great schools and hospitals. (Population 1,725,000) Marikina City: Clean streets, squatter-free environment, plenty of residential subdivisions. (Population 479,000) Iloilo City: Top schools, natural wonders, strategic location. (Population 366,000) Las Pinas City: Plenty of residential subdivisions, excellent social services. (Population 366,000) Pasig City: Urban living at a lower cost, major commercial and entertainment center, access to good schools. (Population 505,000) San Fernando, Pampanga: Strategic location, great food, many business opportunities. (Population 212,000) Mandaluyong City: The other half of Ortigas, plenty of residential options, good schools. (Population 278,000) Quezon City: Plenty of residential areas, good schools, access to hospitals, lots of entertainment centers. (Population 2,174,000) Manila Batangas Cagayan de Oro Muntinlupa Angeles Baguio Lipa Calamba General Santos City Cebu Now, remember, this is the list (and the order) put together by MoneySense Magazine. It is not necessarily what Bob Martin would list, and particularly the order of the list would be different for me. Frankly, that’s human nature, and probably every person reading this would put together a slightly different list and a different ordering of the candidates. I find it interesting, though, to see a Magazine in the Philippines put together such a list. What changes would I make? Well, firstly, a number of the Cities listed are in Metro Manila, and I simply find that area too crowded for my liking. Along with crowding, that brings along other problems like pollution and such. So, a lot of the parts of Metro Manila simply would not be on my list. In addition, when I look at the list, and particularly the reasons for the placement and I see a reason like “plenty of residential areas,” that simply would not be a qualifier for me. Just because a place has a lot of residential areas, that doesn’t mean that it is a great place to live. Another major change that I would make is that I’d have more rural areas on my personal list. Now, I say that while living in (and loving) Davao City, which is the second largest City on the list. However, even though it has a large population, Davao has a small town feel to it. You just don’t feel that you are in a City of nearly 2 Million people. Here is a list of my Top 5 Cities where I would want to live in the Philippines: Davao City: No doubt, Davao is my home and I love it. I have no plans of leaving! Iligan City: I have a lot of good friends in Iligan City, and the town is quite nice. I could see myself living there, if I ever decided to move from Davao. General Santos City: I lived in GenSan for 2 years when I first came to the Philippines. Since that time the town has improved a lot, and there are things that I miss about the place. Tagbilaran, Bohol: While I have yet to visit the place, what I know about it sounds inviting. I certainly would want to check it out more before living there, but it is a place that attracts me. Cebu City: The drawback with Cebu is that it is becoming it’s own “Mini-Manila.” While the crowds and traffic and pollution are a turn off, there are a lot of services available too. Cebu is also becoming a costly place to live, though. How about you? What would your top destinations be? Why not leave a list of your Top 5 places to live in the Philippines. Just post it in a comment below, and let’s see what kind of consensus we can come to! I’d like to thank Matt for pointing me toward this article. Matt is a reader who happened to find out about this article from another website, and e-mailed me to tell me about it, at which time I had a look and decided that it was a great topic for my column today. Thank you very much, Matt! Source (http://liveinthephilippines.com/bobm/2008/04/17/where-is-your-place-in-the-philippines/) The population of Iligan City reached 300,000+ even without the presence of those malls and that many business establishments as in the case of other cities. This just clearly shows that Iligan is a good place to settle in. Despite the fact that there are a lot of heavy industries in the city, she's still one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country. Mindanao population reaches 3.95 million NORTHERN Mindanao's total population is up, but the region's average annual population growth rate slid to 1.67 percent compared to the 1.99 percent recorded during the 1995 to 2000 period. This was one of the findings of the 2007 Census of Population conducted by the National Statistics Office (NSO), which shows, among others, that Northern Mindanao is now a place of 3,952,437 inhabitants. NSO placed the figure at 2,747,585 in the 2000 census. The study also showed an increase of 446,729 persons for the region, which spans five provinces -- Bukidnon, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental, Misamis Oriental -- and two highly urbanized cities of Cagayan de Oro and Iligan. That puts Northern Mindanao in the tenth place in terms of population among the country's 17 regions, contributing 4.46 percent to the national population, placed at 88.57 million. Among the five provinces and two highly urbanized cities, Bukidnon registered the largest population at 1,190,284 persons, followed by Misamis Oriental with 748,885 persons. Camiguin had the smallest population at 81,293 persons. Cagayan de Oro City was the fastest growing area in the region with an average annual growth rate of 2.54 percent. Lanao del Norte was the fastest growing province with an average annual growth rate of 1.80 percent, followed by Misamis Oriental with 1.66 percent. Misamis Occidental was the slowest province with 1.23 percent. Overall, the latest census result showed that there were 88.57 million Filipinos as of August 2007, with an annual growth rate of 2.04 percent for the period of 2000 to 2007. In comparison, the population growth of the country was 3.01 percent in the 1960-1970 census; 2.75 percent in the 1970-1980 census; and 2.35 percent in the 1980-1990 census. From 1990, the census was held every five years. The 1990-1995 census showed a 2.34 growth, while the 1995-2000 census had a 2.36 growth. NSO Administrator Carmelita N. Ericta said a census was scheduled in 2005 but the government lacked money for it, hence it was moved to 2007. The next census will be in 2010, when President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's administration plans to bring down the growth rate to 1.95 percent. Ericta said the 2007 nationwide census had a budget of P1.3 billion. President Arroyo signed Proclamation 1489, declaring as official the 2007 population count of the Philippines. "The transfer of tax remittances by large taxpayers in the region to their Manila offices has greatly affected our total collection which was just about the same level collected in 2006," Mustapha Gandarosa, Regional Director of BIR-16, said. As to total revenue, income taxes still comprised the biggest bulk of collections of 61%, followed by the value added taxes (VAT), 26%, percentage taxes, 5% and excise taxes, almost 1% while "other" taxes or from other sources such as penalties, fines, surcharges, documentary stamps, real estate and capital gains, 7%. In terms of increase in collection, however, percentage taxes, mainly due to the shift from the VAT payments of banks and other financial institutions to the 5% gross taxes posted the highest increase, from Php172.81 million to Php226.64 million or 31.15%, followed by other taxes, from Php253.53 million to Php315.19 million or 24.32%, But collection of excise taxes dropped from Php0.48 million to Php0.33 million or -32.52%, income taxes, from Php2.537 billion to Php2.440 billion or -3.84% and VAT, from Php1.054 billion to Php1.036 billion or -1.66%. Meanwhile, Gandarosa said Revenue District Office No. 98 - Cagayan de Oro City, still posted the highest share of the total regional collections (TRC) with Php2.145 billion or 52% despite its decline in collections by 11.82% compared to Php2.432 billion in 2006. The other RDO's of the region, however, posted positive collections in 2007, the highest of which was RDO 100-Ozamiz City, from Php18.66 million to Php423.07 million or 32.77%, followed by RDO 101-Iligan City, from Php627.48 million to Ph723.81 million or 15.35%, RDO 97 - Gingoog City, from Php156.64 million to Php179.61 million or 14.66% RDO 99-Malaybalay City, from Php482.08 million to Php546.24 million or 13.31%. Aside from the five (5) provinces and eight (8) cities of Northern Mindanao, BIR-16 also covers RDO 102 – Marawi City in Lanao del Sur of the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) because of its proximity to Cagayan de Oro City compared to Cotabato City where the ARMM regional center is located. "The above data, however, has excluded the collection and remittances from RDO 102," Gandarosa added. Among these are the house-to-house information campaign relative to the city’s solid waste management program, anti-smoke belching and anti-smoking on vehicle operations which already started last April 14 and until the 24th. A city-wide clean-up was also scheduled (April 19-20) participated by city hall officials and employees, barangay officials, purok leaders and the private sector. ICSWMB also hosted the flag raising program of the LGU employees on April 21, Monday, and made a 15-minute presentation of the salient features of RA 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. A public display and blessing of the six newly-acquired garbage trucks was part of the highlights of the occasion. Other significant activities are the parade of floats on April 24 around main city streets, booth display of recycled products made from garbage on April 24 and 25 and the Mr. Earth Pageant on April 25 at the city public plaza. City Councilor Chonilo Ruiz, Committee Chairman on Environment of the city council, spearheads the entire undertaking. Baguio more than made up for Junthy Valenzuela's departure from the Barakos, earning him the weekly citation. "He stepped up in time and in a big way," coach Yeng Guiao said in a PBA statement released on Monday. "His game improved precisely when we urgently needed somebody to fill up the void created during this transition period – and Cyrus proved to be the man for the job." Valenzuela was traded to Barangay Ginebra last week for two future draft picks. The reed-thin but high-flying guard averaged an amazing 25.5 points, 3.5 rebounds with as many assists, and 2.0 steals in Red Bull's back-to-back wins over Purefoods and Alaska, giving Red Bull a 4-1 win-loss record and a share of the lead with Coca-Cola. "We actually don't want to put that much pressure on him because our system is such that we want to balance our offense," Guiao said. "That's why we don't want giving anybody the sole responsibility of winning the game for us. But in the meantime, it's okay. We're still adjusting." Baguio, a native of Iligan City, scored 25 of his 27 points in the second half of the Barakos' 98-96 win over the Giants last Wednesday. He capped that performance with a clutch triple and a layup in the endgame. When the Barakos scored a 100-97 overtime win over the Aces last Saturday, Baguio posted 24 points, five rebounds, six assists, and three steals. "Cyrus has remained level-headed and humble in his role as go-to guy, and those virtues are appreciated by his teammates," Guiao noted. "He's one of the hardest workers, even in practice, that's why he's been playing really good of late." Speaking on the global prospects of bamboo exports, Kalalo said “the global market for bamboo-based handicraft and furniture is estimated at $8 billion and is growing.” It is growing especially in the developed world because the giant grass is now being known as a green product for being cultivated in several countries in Asia; therefore, it is seen as renewable. Philippine exports of bamboo-based handicrafts has averaged $368 million a year, while bamboo furniture fetches about $2 million a year. This has, however, reached a plateau since the mid-1990s, Kalalo told the Northern Mindanao exporters. The stagnation of bamboo exports was mainly due to the absence of concerted efforts to put up bamboo plantations. For winning the tilt, the Association of Linamon Young Producers were awarded with P100,000. The money will be used to bankroll their proposed project in organizing a British Council Philippines and UK Philippines Partners for Peace pageant. Based in Barangay Samburon, Linamon town in Lanao del Norte, the project of the Association of Linamon Young Producers is about contributing peace and development efforts through the inculcation of values/virtues while engaging in a profitable modest enterprise via the production of Virgin Coconut Oil (VCO). This is also about engaging with the out-out-school youths of the municipality of Linamon in the overall goal of the local government to achieve social and economic development. The members of the group are Melvin L. Pendang, Shaminoden M. Sambitory and Jason De Asis. Aside from the P100,000 grant, a project management training course was also given to the winners. The course will further equip them with the necessary tools they need to implement their projects. They are also assigned with mentors to guide them in the duration of the projects. Hatag Kalinaw is a youth-led project grant competition for school and community-based youth organizations in Mindanao on how the ideals of peace can be achieved through mutual understanding and entrepreneurship. Five project proponents made their way to the panel presentation at the Astoria Hotel, Pasig City last March 25 to vie for the grant. The panel was headed by British Council Philippines director Andrew Picken and assistant director-programmes Nannette Mercado, and joined by Commissioner Princess Abante of the National Youth Commission (NYC), Rachel Gillego from the Office of Senator Francis Pangilinan, Errol Merquita of Tropical Disease Foundation, and Reese Fernandez of the Ateneo School of Government-Youth Leadership and Entrepreneurship. The other two winning proponent organizations came from Mindanao. They are as follows: * Kids for Peace Foundation Ketay de Tribo Koh Katnak (Tulay sa Kultura ug Kalambuan) Barangay Eday, Columbio, Sultan Kudarat. Their project hopes to see the youth of Eday learn the art of weaving the nito from their elders, understand their culture, learn about peace and express these concepts as designs in their work. Through this, they will slowly build markets and get their identity known to a world that has ignored them and learn to manage an enterprise with the full respect of their community and environment. * Teduray, Lambangian Youth and Student Association (TLYSA) Integrated Development Project on the Teduray, Lambangian Youth Within the Ancestral Domain Claim Nuro Upi, Shariff Kabunsuan Their proposal is a community-based project that aims to address issues on the lack of sustainable livelihood sources among the indigenous peoples. It enhances the awareness of young Kefedewan that will somehow affect their socio-economic, political and cultural condition. This will be done by providing the youth with farmer's assistance on post harvest facilities to improve economic conditions, and at the same time conduct continuous campaigns and advocacy about youth participation in traditional conflict management within the territorial domain of the tribe.
