Cement plant makes use of plastic wastes from dumpsite

By Maricar M. Calubiran

About 20 metric tons of plastic garbage collected from the Calajunan dumpsite was shipped to Iligan City as fuel for the Holcim cement factory. The scheme was purposely designed to eliminate plastic materials in the dumping site. Seventy percent of the garbage found in the dumpsite are plastics.

Mayor Jerry Treñas said the city gets no amount from the shipment but it helps the environment. The scheme is still in the testing period. Holcim is asking for a 100-day period to get the plastic wastes at the controlled dumpsite.

Yes, it's still owned by Aboitiz. Recently, Pilmico has secured a P500-M loan to support its feedmill expansion in Iligan. :)

Iligan Observes Earth Day Celebration

In pursuance with the Earth Day Celebration on April 24, 2008, the local government of Iligan through the Iligan City Solid Waste Management Board (ICSWMS) created by Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz launched a series of activities that highlights the event.

Among these are the house-to-house information campaign relative to the city’s solid waste management program, anti-smoke belching and anti-smoking operations which already started last April 14 up to the 24th. A city-wide clean-up was also conducted (April 19-20) and participated by city hall officials and employees, barangay officials, purok leaders and the private sector. ICSWMB also hosted the flag raising program of the LGU employees on April 21, and made a 15-minute presentation of the salient features of RA 9003 otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. A public display and blessing of the six newly-acquired garbage trucks was also part of the highlights of the occasion.

Other significant activities are the parade of floats on April 24 around main city streets, booth display of recycled products (made from garbage) on April 24 and 25, and the Mr. Earth Pageant on April 25 at the city public plaza.

City Councilor Chonilo Ruiz, Committee Chairman on Environment of the city council, spearheads the entire undertaking.

MAYOR CRUZ, MALA-UMONG MOBAYAD NA ANG USA KA INDUSTRIYA
04/22/08

(mta)

Hey guys!

FYI, the Iligan Internet Cafe Operators Association, Inc. (under FELIX C. MAMINTA-President) will be investing on computers and IT Solutions here in Iligan to cater the needs of their members as well as non-members. They're planning also to set-up a 20 seater call center to at least jump start the IT industry here in Iligan. The building and gadgets are there already. Its just a matter of coordinating with other IT Stakeholders.

SPES APPLICANTS NGA WALA MALAKIP SA 173 KA BENEFICIARIES
04/23/08

State of the Nation Address.

(Divina M. Suson)

Lake Lanao may be gone in 20 years

Maranao mythology has a wondrous story about the creation of Lake Lanao. In the beginning, the land of Mantapoli was so heavy, it threatened to turn the world upside down. Allah instructed the Angel Gabriel to call all His angels. Millions of angels lifted Mantapoli and transferred it to the center of the earth. Allah then filled the enormous gap with water, thus creating the deep-blue Lanao Lake.

Unfortunately, Lanao Lake no longer bears a resemblance the lake created by God. Decades of logging, pollution and degradation have turned it into a vast sewage pool.

Local doomsayers are warning that Mindanao’s largest lake may be gone in about 20 years or so if it is not saved from internal and external threats.

Lake Lanao in Lanao del Sur is one of the five oldest lakes in the world and is the second-largest freshwater lake in the Philippines, with a surface area of 340 square kilometers.

The United Nations Environment Program considered Lake Lanao as one of the 250 priority biodiverse lakes. It used to be home to 18 endemic fish species that not found anywhere else. These species are now gone.

Lake Lanao sits atop a plateau in the heart of Lanao del Sur, surrounded by 31 municipalities and one city (Marawi). Four rivers feed into the lake, and its only outlet is the Agus River, which flows northward into Iligan Bay via two channels, one over the famous Maria Cristina Falls, the other over the Linamon Falls. The Agus River provides electricity for the Mindanao power grid.

Lanao del Sur, the second-most populated province in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), is also the seventh-most impoverished (as of 2003) and has the sixth-lowest human development index (HDI) among provinces in the country.

About 92 percent of those who lived around the lake are Maranaos, who are historically and culturally linked to the lake and dependent on it for food and livelihood.

Most of the employed (at only 50.98 percent of the total workforce or only 28 percent of the total population) are in agriculture, hunting and forestry. This highlights the dependence on the natural resources— especially by the women—particularly in the watershed areas in the livelihood of the people.

Impact on the lake watershed reservation

Presidential Proclamation 871 dated February 1992 declared the Lake Lanao Watershed reservation. The area spans 180,640 hectares.

Lake Lanao serves a reservoir for National Power Corp.’s (Napocor’s) six Agus Grid hydroelectric power plants, which generate an aggregate installed capacity of 727.1 megawatts. Lake Lanao is an integral part of the powerful river system that produces about 70 percent of Mindanao’s electricity.

To fully tap the enormous hydroelectric potential of Lake Lanao, the flow of Agus River must be stabilized at the expense of destabilizing the level of the Lake Lanao. Destabilizing the lake level according to foreign writers Frey and Rabor has severe economic and sociological repercussions on the region as well as marked influences on the limnology of the lake. It should be noted that the construction of the series of dams across the Agus River will lower the lake’s level to as much as 9 meters.

The degradation of Lake Lanao is also caused by siltation from deforestation, pollution from agricultural run-offs and human habitation, fluctuation of water levels due to the dams, overfishing, introduction of alien species, and forest denudation. This is causing major social and economic backlash not only on the local population but also on the lake itself and the entire country.

According to the Save Lake Lanao Movement (SALAM), the lake watershed is gradually sloping from sea level at the outlet of Agus River at Iligan Bay to about 702 meters elevation at the lake level to about 2.316 meters at the peak of the highest point along the watershed divide at Mount Magaturing.

The 54-nation Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) has taken note of the plight of Lake Lanao through the representations of a group, the Ranao Claims Against the Power Plants (RCAPP). The group complains that Napocor, a government corporation, has not complied with the terms of an Environmental Compliance Certificate issued by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources requiring the company to build and construct irrigation infrastructures in the lake area, organize an environment guarantee fund and provide compensation to farmers in inundated areas, and monitor water-borne diseases in the lake’s waters.

The group demanded that Napocor undertake massive reforestation in watershed areas.

Napocor, in response, said it has embarked in major reforestation and agro-forestry and fish stocking in the watershed, contributing some P10 million to the Lake Lanao Watershed Protection Council of the Environment and Natural Resources department. It has also involved Save Lake Lanao Movement as part of a Multipartite Monitoring Team to oversee the implementation of community programs to rehabilitate the lake.

Several agencies and groups have taken up the cudgel for the lake. The government’s Watershed Council, Napocor, provincial governments of Lanao del Sur, Lanao del Norte, and civil society groups—Ranao Claims Against the Power Plants, Save Lake Lanao Movement, and Philippine Muslim Women Council—have each worked on environmental initiatives that will hopefully benefit the generations of Maranaos to come.

Protected and rehabilitated, Lake Lanao may still become the deep-blue lake God created for the Maranaos.

NFA MAKIGTAGBO SA MGA BGR OUTLET RETAILERS
04/24/08

--Samira Gutoc and Dalumabi Bula

The Manila Times (http://www.manilatimes.net/national/2008/apr/25/yehey/moro/20080425moro1.html)

The government and we the people should help protecting lake Lanao and give more importance to the people of Lanao del Sur.

Overflowing Summer Adventures
http://www.visayandailystar.com/2008/Starlife/2008/April/27/images/starcover%2004-27-08.jpg

For those who are looking for a different vacation spot this summer, there’s an appealing option beyond the popular white sand beaches and the usual water fun parks.

Somewhere in the northern side of Mindanao lies Iligan City tagged as the “City of Waterfalls” because of numerous cascades overflowing in the hearts of its lush forests. About 20 water falls are found in the city, the former capital of Lanao del Norte.

The most popular is the magnificent Maria Cristina Falls along the Agus River which supplies electricity for parts of Mindanao from its powerful current, a source of hydroelectric power. There is also Tinago Falls, an amazingly beautiful curtain, pristine lagoon and jaw-dropping wonder for first-timers.

A three-day or a week stay in Iligan will allow you to explore the many wonders of the city and its nearby attractions, culture, the unique warmth of its people and more than 20 other waterfalls.

Nearby the city of Cagayan de Oro, an hour and a half drive by bus offers equally enthralling vacation spots like that of Iligan. Among the popular adventure activities is white water rafting. Visitors can make side trips to this Misamis Oriental capital – a booming city in Mindanao. Fruit stalls of durian and a variety of exotic picks line the streets offering a succulent feast to tourists. Nearby, too, are the cool Bukidnon slopes known for their pineapple plantations, the Lanao provinces and the beaches of Camiguin, a convenient trip from Cagayan de Oro.

Back in Iligan, vacationers can frolic in the spring of Taytay and Timoga, a haven for kids and adult alike who wanted an endless splash to its many swimming pools. While beaches and picnic grounds are also popular among visitors and excursionists.

Interestingly, Iligan is also famous for the old house of the Macapagals, where President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo spent many summers of her youth. This home turned into museum is near the Timoga resort. For arts and culture buffs, Iligan, through its premier learning institution, the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, has a dynamic and widely-recognized performing arts group and is home to a summer creative writing workshop.

Majestic cascades, rich Muslim culture, more than a dozen industrial sites, more sites make up Iligan overflowing with summer adventures, which are very accessible to Negros via commercial vessels, like those of Negros Navigation, through overnight trips. NN’s M/S St. Joseph the Worker sails Bacolod to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan every Tuesday at 12:30PM.

Those who would like to avail of tour packages to Cagayan de Oro and Iligan may contact NN at (034) 708-0461. Ishmael Algara

Here is the message from Bob in New York, who supplied this Photo (by IRBO):

Many of the people I met and spoke with during my recent visit to Iligan City were very impressed with the amount of knowledge I had acquired about their city and at times I even surprised myself. Two years and hundreds of hours of websufing Iligan City may be an extreme case of ” Know Before You Go ” . The more I learned about Iligan City the more interest I developed in going there.

Here I am seen talking with the Iligan City Department of Tourism informing them of the vast amount of information, photos and video that appear on the internet about their city. A high percentage of these items have been put on the internet by many of the proud Iliganons that live there. It seemed the Department of Tourism may not have been familiar with www.mindanao.com, they are now!

^^ I think so. If I'm not mistaken, h** name is **** **** (IRBO).

One of the great things about the Internet is that you can exchange and interact with people anonymously and find virtual friends. The only time that anonymity is broken is by the person him/herself, or by his/her permission.
I know some forumers here personally, but I wouldn't call them by their real names in this forum, out of respect of the anonymity they have sought.
So for all you guys who divulged the identity of this person, please remove your posts to protect him/her from possible abuse.:poke:

ECONOMIC ISSUES, GITUKI SA PANAGTAGBO NILA NI MAYOR CRUZ UG USEC.LEYRETANA
04/25/08

Mindanao cities drawing BPO firms that seek to reduce costs

Fierce competition in the business process outsourcing industry is speeding up the expansion throughout Mindanao of BPO firms looking to lower operating costs and access new sources of talent to fill demand.

Davao and Cagayan de Oro are becoming known as BPO hubs offering a wide range of services, but there is still room for regional expansion, the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) said.

Current estimates of the total number of call centers in the Philippines range from 90 to more than 120. Fewer than 10 of these are in Mindanao, which has a quarter of the national population.

The global BPO industry will generate an estimated $310 billion by 2010, according to the Oxford Business Group. "The Philippines is projected to take 10% of the world market, and Mindanao stands to benefit from the country-wide expansion," the USAID said through its Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program.

Most larger-scale firms now investing in Mindanao are in Davao and Cagayan de Oro. "There are 3,000 existing seats in five call centers in Davao alone, with 3,000 more in the pipeline," said Andre Fournier of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

Link2Support, Inc. already employs several hundred call center agents in Davao and Cagayan de Oro. Western Wats, a US-based firm, is said to be investing P60 million in its Davao operations.

Joji Ilagan Bian, president of the Philippine Call Center Alliance, said Mindanao is also attracting firms planning small-scale centers with 250 seats or less. "They’re considering other urban centers like General Santos, Zamboanga, Iligan and Cotabato," Ms. Bian said.

General Santos, a bustling agroindustrial hub, is said to be planning a citywide wireless network using WiMAX technology, which should make it more attractive to BPO investors. It already has a fiber optic network in place.

The three-hectare Mabuhay IT Park, set up in General Santos by private developer Mabuhay Technopark Corp., is a one-stop facility for voice, video and data services, with secure network communications and backup power supply.

The potential BPO labor force in the city includes 5,000 new graduates from colleges in the city per year, with about 10,000 more from Sarangani, South Cotabato, and Sultan Kudarat, according to a report prepared with the Board of Investment.

"General Santos is definitely at par with other information and communications technology hubs," said Ellorence Cruz of the BOI. "The only hindrance is the lingering perception of security risks in the region. We had the same problem in 2002 when promoting the country as a BPO hub. Little by little, the firms started coming to Manila, then to other cities. And now they’re coming to Mindanao."

Filipino-owned BPO firms appear to have discounted these security perceptions, Ms. Bian said. "I tell other firms less familiar with the region that they should just come over and judge for themselves. They can incubate accounts with a limited number of seats and see how well things work out."

Skilled BPO workers can be found throughout Mindanao, said Ms. Bian, who operates several call center training schools. Most of the region’s universities and vocational institutions are now offering extension courses in BPO skills. Iligan City and Zamboanga have particularly large labor pools and strong college level programs in IT. "Graduates with IT skills or call center training end up migrating to Cebu and Manila to get jobs. "Why not bring the business closer to the labor pool?" Ms. Bian said.

Setting up BPO operations right at the manpower source has advantages for both the firms and their local hires, according to the USAID’s GEM program which, with the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council, is helping to expand employment opportunities and improve IT infrastructure in the region.

Mindanao-based personnel who do not have to commute and pay rent as they would in Manila and Cebu are content with a lower pay scale. "Also, since call center jobs carry more prestige in Mindanao, personnel are more committed," Mr. Fournier said. According to the GEM program, the employment of young people ensures peace and economic development of their communities.

Call center agents from Zamboanga have been known to trade P20,000 call center jobs in Manila for P12,000 jobs in their home city because, they say, there they can enjoy better quality of life. Brenda Nazareth-Manzano, regional director of the Department of Science and Technology, said incoming BPO firms would have the benefit of strong interagency collaboration.

Operating costs in Mindanao can be 25% to 30% less than in Manila or Cebu. Power in General Santos and Zamboanga is less than P5 per kilowatt-hour (kwh), compared with P10 per kwh in Cebu and P8.23 per kwh in Metro Manila. Labor economists forecast the creation of up to two million jobs in BPO-related industries by 2010. The USAID wants to help ensure that Mindanao receives an equitable share of this pie. — Growth with Equity in Mindanao

PNP surrenders traffic task

The local PNP command will give up it's Traffic Managment and Control functions and yield them
to the Local Government of Iligan.
A highly-placed source at City Hall told Mindanao Scoop that three weeks ago, Col. Virgilio T. Ranes
and SInsp. Rio Flores met with Mayor Lawewnce Lluch Cruz and his close aids to discuss the turn over of
the Traffic Managment and Control Functions now being performed by the PNP to the city Government.
It was learned that the move was prompted by the lack of PNP personnel carry out it's flight against
criminality and vise.
Only the traffic accident investigators will be retained by the PNP.
According to the source, City Mayor Lawrence Cruz tasked City Administrator Pacificador Lluch to pre-
pare the necessary arrangement so that the proposed move will materialize.
He said that the Traffic Engineering and Management Boared will convene as soon as possible to deliberate
on organizing the unit that will handle the traffic management and control function.
Presently, the local government employs traffic aides to augment the operations of the traffic division of the
PNP.
It is initially seen that the present traffic aides will form the core group that will perform the functions as soon
as the turn over is finalize.
The whole Civil Security Unit of the LGU may also compose the unit to be responsible and accountable for
traffic management.
The Source disclosed that plans are being finalized on this regard and a transition program is being designed
since the unit needs to be trained and oriented on the provisions of the traffic Code of Iligan.
It was learened that about a year ago, The PNP was no longer deputized by the Land Transportation Office
in the enforcement of Rebublic Act 4136, also known as the Land Transportation and Traffic code.
Similarly, the Traffic Management and Control Unit of the city governement will only enforce provisions of
the Traffic Code of Iligan , unless otherwise deputized by the Land Transportation Office.

Texting, VoIP help enhance RP's healthcare system
04/30/2008 | 06:22 PM

Although public and private sectors are using information and communications technology (ICT) at differing levels, both agree that innovative developments could serve as a tool for bridging the Philippines’ yawning health gap.

At the CyberPress Forum held recently at the iAcademy auditorium in Makati City, industry experts said ICT is transforming the way healthcare is provided in the country for both underfunded public health facilities and state-of-the-art private medical centers and hospitals.

Dr. Alvin Marcelo, director of the National Telehealth Center in UP Manila, said “telemedicine" modalities such as text messaging, multimedia messaging system (MMS), voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) can help serve far-flung areas where the availability of doctors and health professionals is scarce.

Marcelo said 50 percent of Filipinos die without ever seeing a doctor in their lifetime. ICT, he said, could partly solve the problem.

Marcelo said the National Telehealth Center has been pushing for “the ethical, effective and efficient delivery of healthcare to underserved communities of the Philippines" using all available technology that is mostly based on open source platform.

Facility helps ‘reintegrate’ Philippine health care system

The center, established by the University of the Philippines’ Board of Regents in 1998 as an attached agency of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is based at the Philippine General Hospital (PGH), is also mandated to “design and develop IT-based solutions that will provide primary health care to local communities served," he said.

He said the deployment of ICT is crucial at this time when the Philippines is caught between the “migration of health care workers to other countries and the severe lack of health care providers in many parts of the country because of the remoteness of the underserved areas."

According to Marcelo, there has been a “disintegration of the health care system’s public sector component because of devolution, which put local governments in charge of health care funding and personnel management."

ICT, he said, “can help reintegrate the system" by bringing together a network of doctors and healthcare workers in remote or underserved communities and linking them with doctors in urban areas who can help
diagnose and treat provincial patients using mobile phones, the Internet and, in cases where the remote area also suffers a lack of electricity, radio communication.

In 2005, the Commission on ICT (CICT), through the eGovernment fund, awarded a grant to the National TeleHealth Center so it could “design and develop ten telehealth and telementoring systems" in the provinces
of Cagayan Valley, Capiz Province, Leyte and Iligan, where the UP Manila medical school has satellite facilities.

500 join nat’l youth congress in Lanao Norte
By DANNY JUNCO

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte – About 500 top young leaders from different regions converged here for the first time to show their unity and strength as one dominant sector of the society and local officials during the1st National Youth Peace Congress at the Mindanao Civic Center Tubod town.

The activity was spearheaded by officials of the National Youth Commission (NYC) and the provincial government of Lanao del Norte led by the country’s youngest governor Khalid Q. Dimaporo and SK Provincial Federated President – Board Member Solaiman Mutia Jr.

Richard Alvin Nalupta, NYC chairman and chief executive officer, said participants came from all over the country, who are mostly the elected municipal and provincial federation SK presidents.

He said the proposed abolition of the SK by Congress would not distort their determination to come up with a new brand of future leaders who are pro-active and output-oriented, and most of all possessing the values of love for the country, with the aim of redeeming the negative image of politics and corruption.

"We need to challenge ourselves to work hard for the betterment of the young populace. We need to draw up plans together to prove that our incumbency is worthwhile and would not turn to be in vain. We have millions in terms of resources, we need to converge and corroborate so that our voices be heard and our agonies be addressed," Nalupta said.

Dimaporo, in his speech, urged the youth leaders to be more aggressive in expressing their rights and aspirations for youth development.

He believes that governors and mayors would become supportive of the SK’s persuasive investments for the youth.

This is to ensure that government resources would not be wasted. So, kailangan ninyong ipakita ang iyong kakayahan in voicing out your sentiments to convince them", Dimaporo said.

The youth congress tackled good governance, leadership skills and the visiting delegations were also briefed on the tourist programs in Lanao del Norte.

This also enabled the SK leaders to identify programs and projects doable in their localities.

Gawad Kalinga builds houses in Wao
By Richel Umel
Correspondent

WAO, Lanao del Sur - Around 30 units of houses were built in three hectares of public land that will be occupied by homeless rebel returnees and other constituents here, as the highway of peace caravan will arrive on April 25 and 26.

The Gawad Kalinga houses were built as commitment contribution from the Lanao del Norte provincial government, Iligan City local government unit (LGU), and other LGUs and organizations.

National Power Corporation (Napocor) Engineer Leo Nangaas, team leader, said the employees volunteered themselves to be deducted one half of their one day salary to raise P450,000 to build five units of Gawad Kalinga houses which cost P75,000 each.

The Napocor employees sent 75 volunteers from Mindanao Generation, Pulangi Hydro Electric Power Plant and Agus Hydro Electric Power Plant of Iligan City and the Lanao provinces.

Tony Meloto, founder and champion of Gawad Kalinga, who visited the site in Wao lauded the relentless efforts and high spirited volunteers in Bayani Challenge who work hard and sweat in building the village.

Stock exchange to conduct free stock trading seminars
05/02/2008 | 03:18 AM

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) will hold free seminars in the provinces next month to encourage more Filipinos to invest in the stock market.

In a statement on its Web site, the exchange said it would be holding the road shows in Cagayan de Oro and Iligan City on May 5 and 7, respectively.

The seminars will discuss stock trading basics, online trading and listing on the exchange. Participants can also ask questions during the open forum.

"This is to really deepen education among prospective investors in the local market, where not even 1% is actively trading," PSE President and Chief Executive Francis Ed. Lim said in an interview.

He added that aside from the seminars, the exchange had tied up with schools to offer stock-related courses to the public.

Last month, the exchange partnered with the Center for Continuing Education of the Ateneo Graduate School of Business to offer a 12-course stock market education to the public.

"It is also part of our long-term program to broaden the retail investor base and enable the local stock market to catch up with neighboring markets," Mr. Lim said.

The equities market has been down by about 24% due to persistent concerns over the US economy and fears that consumer prices will continue to go up.

Investors can invest in the stock market through broker-assisted calls or online trading.

Before trading, prospective clients are given opening account forms by their chosen brokerage houses. They must submit a government-issued ID to the broker’s office and pay fees to open an account. For online trading clients can pay through the broker’s bank account and start trading a day after the transaction.

The exchange has also held road shows abroad to woo Filipinos working overseas. It held a road show in Hong Kong recently, touting capital market reforms as its main selling point.

Aside from holding a stock market investment seminar for nearly 200 Hong Kong-based Filipinos, the exchange also updated fund managers in Hong Kong on reforms to ensure the market integrity and protect investors.

The PSE road show coincided with an Asian investment conference held by Credit Suisse and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s official visit to the Chinese territory. - Lovely Nica P. Lee,BusinessWorld

MAYOR CRUZ, GIKATAKDANG MOPAGAWAS SA IYANG REAKSIYON KABAHIN SA PAG-PULL OUT SA HANJIN SA MISAMIS OR
05/01/08

(Divina M. Guys, did you know that there's a posibility that Iligan will adopt the "911" system for its emergency response center. It's actually a project that uses a special computer software to help authorities respond to distress calls - like in the US, Canada and in Davao. But the project could not be implemented soon because NTC would not permit the use of the said number for undisclosed reasons.

ILIGAN CITY HALL – situated on top of Buhanginan Hill, 130 feet above sea level, is the seat of Government of Iligan, built way back 1958. It is also a favorite promontory of Iliganons for viewing the sunset or skyline of the city by night. The grounds are sometimes utilized for official social functions.

ANAHAW OPEN AMPHI-THEATER – Located at the Buhanginan Hill in the southeastern side of city hall. It is only 2.3 kilometers from the city proper. Probably the biggest open Amphitheater in Mindanao. A beautiful site to view Iligan City, where children can romp around the playground. The road going

Diyandi Festival sa Iligan

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/diyandi1.jpg

Folk-lore depicts Iligan’s patron saint,
St. Michael the Archangel as the protector of
peace. During the 70s, at the height of the
secessionist hostilities in Mindanao, people
believed that Iligan remained untouched
and safe from rebel attacks because of the
miracles of St. Michael.
One evening, when a hostile group
was poised to
attack Iligan
City, the rebels
r e t r e a t e d
because they
could not find
the city as it
was transformed into
a lake. Another story
told is that the Patron
Saint makes his
rounds in the evening
as evidenced by amorseko grass on his clothes and
muddy boots.
These are just a few of the many stories about
St. Michael. Even the story of his installation as
patron saint of Iligan continues to inspire and
endear him to each and every Iliganon.
Thus, his feast every 29th of September, is a grand
celebration in Iligan. In fact, it has transformed into a month-long
festival, the DIYANDI FESTIVAL SA ILIGAN.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/diyandi2.jpg

Diyandi is a ritual performed by an all-female group outside the Cathedral during
the Pagkanaug, before every novena and before the start of the Komedya, or Comedia
de San Miguel, a folk stage play depicting the celestial battle. The ritual depicts the
courtship between a Maranao male and Higaonon female, and culminating into an offering
symbolic of their union and bountiful harvest to St. Michael the Archangel. The ritual
aptly describes the peaceful co-existence of Iligan’s tri-people – Maranaos, Higaonons and
Christians

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — Philippine Pizza, Inc., franchise holder of the Pizza Hut brand, is expanding to nearby Iligan City within the year.

Of more than 140 Pizza Hut restaurants operating nationwide, only five are located in Mindanao — two in this city, two in Davao City and one in General Santos City.

A ranking company official said Iligan City’s economic prospects are bright given residents’ increasing income.

The city has reported increased activities in the last two years after Global Steel Philippines, a subsidiary of an Indian conglomerate, took over the old National Steel Corp. complex, Iligan’s largest employer with over 2,000 workers.

Several major industries in the city, especially those that are export-oriented, have also expanded their operations in recent years.

This city and Iligan comprise the Cagayan-Iligan industrial corridor, which hosts dozens of large manufacturing establishments employing thousands of workers.

Philippine Pizza, Inc. has reported a significant improvement in its business in Mindanao and expressed optimism new promotional packages would further boost its sales this year.

Charles Baer, Pizza Hut marketing manager, noted that since they launched the P99 meals in the second week of January, sales have gone up by 20%.

"We are expecting to have another 5% increase until the end of this year since we want to reach the C market," said Mr. Baer.

He added that while budget meals have higher production cost than individual servings, more people buy these.

"The customer will save more with these P99 value meals. Customers can enjoy the food without paying for service charge," Mr. Baer said.

Value meals may include rice, soup, pasta, pizza and salad. Most customers who dine at Pizza Hut outlets here are young urban professionals, college students and families, Mr. Baer said.

Natalie Kay Yap, who frequents a local outlet, said regular and family servings of Pizza Hut’s pan pizza are her favorites. "The regular and family servings have more toppings on them than the pan pizza served in value meals," Ms. Yap said. — Geefe P. Alba

3 EV writers qualify for 15th Iligan National Writers Workshop

By Marivic Alcober

Tacloban City (5 May) -- Three talented vernacular writers from Eastern Visayas (EV) have qualified to be participants to the 15th Iligan National Writers Workshop (INWW), which is scheduled on May 26-31, 2008, MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, Iligan City. Fifteen slots, five each from Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao have been available for said workshop.

Among the three EV writers who qualified to the INWW are Leonilo Lopido of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Region VIII; Luciano Abia IV, a resident of Basey, Samar and an employee of the Department of Agrarian Reform, Samar Provincial Office; and Efmer Agustin.

Mr. Lopido has already attended three workshops in the region which include the All Waray Creative Writing Workshop, the 7th Creative Writing Workshop at the University of the Philippines in Tacloban, and the Lamiraw Creative Workshop conducted in Calbayog City.

PIA-8 through its Regional Director Erlinda Olivia P. Tiu is proud to for officially endorsing Mr. Lopido to participate in the INWW because she is an avid advocate in the promotion and preservation of Waray literature.

As a writing fellow from Eastern Visayas, the writer will be given transportation allowance and free board and lodging for the whole duration of the INWW. Said participant will be billeted at the Elena Tower Inn located just beside the MSU-ITT along the national highway in Tibanga.

To be able to qualify to participate in the INWW, applicants were required to submit either of the following: five poems; one short story; and a one-act play in Filipino, English, Cebuano, Hiligaynon, Kinaray-a, Waray, Chabacano, Maranao, Tausog, and Maguindanao, together with its translations.

The revival of Waray literature in Eastern Visayas particularly Waray poetry has gained appreciation and interest by some enthusiast as some schools continue conducting the same regional training-workshops for free led by UP Professor Merlie Alunan like the University of the Philippines Tacloban and Tiburcio Tancinco Memorial Institute of Science and Technology in Calbayog City. KONSEHAL RUIZ MIPASABOT SA KATUYO-AN SA INDIGENCY CARD
05/06/08

(boy decena)

MAYOR CRUZ POSITIBONG MAGPAAYON AND HANJIN SHIPBUILDING PROJECT
05/06/08

(Divina M. Suson)

MENSAHE NI KONSEHAL CRUZ SA MGA BATAN-ON SA SIYUDAD
05/07/08

“Be part of the solution, not the problem” o sa binisaya pa “himoon ta nga kabahin kita sa solusyon, dili sa problema”.

Mayor urges public to join Beep

ILOILO City Mayor Jerry P. Treñas is urging the residents of the city to participate in the Barangay Emergency Employment Program (Beep).

Beep aims to clean the drainage system of the city starting on May 16. Alternate schedule is on May 19.

Treñas said, on a recent visit to the area, plastics were the main cause of flood during heavy rains.

"No matter how we construct the drainage system, as long as the people are throwing the plastics, there would be no improvement in our drainage system," Treñas said in an interview.

People should minimize the use of plastic or properly dispose it after use. He said plastics should be thrown in trashcans to be collected and brought at the dumpsite. Some of the plastics from the city are already being brought in Iligan City and used by Holcim as an ingredient in making cement.

The mayor also mandated all residents of the relocation sites in the city to plant trees in their backyard. Planting is one of the programs of Beep. The City Agriculturist will provide seedlings of fruit trees for the relocation site residents.

The project is seen to benefit everyone in the city as it could minimize pollution and further protect the environment. (RSG/MCB/RBV)

KAPITAN ERMAC, NAGTOONG MASULBAD NA ANG ROAD RIGHT OF WAY SA ILANG BARANGAY HALL
05/08/08

(boy decena)

actually, they just feed the plastics in the rotary kiln...because of the high temperature, ma-incinerate ang mga yun and the residue won't affect the quality of the clinker (yung lumalabas sa kiln) or lump cement na ready for grinding para powdered cement.

In Iligan kasi most industries use the beach for their loading facilities (port, jetty, etc.), kaya they also own most of the coastal properties especially in Dalipuga-Kiwalan-Sta. Felomina stretch and "informal settlers" cannot just enter and construct shanties. The fact that the industries are located adjacent to each other made it difficult for illegal occupants to settle in between. Still, in some areas meron pa rin. Fact is the number one pollutants of coastal waters come from doemstic sources and not from industries.

05/07/08

(Divina M. Suson)

GSII DESIDIDO NANG MOBAYAD SA ILANG BUWIS SA SIYUDAD
05/07/08

(mta)

On my recent visit to Iligan City, I had dinner one evening at Big Ben. The moment I saw the place I instantly recognized it from an earlier picture of it that was posted here on Iligan SSC. I found Big Ben to be a very enjoyable place, friendly, clean and good service. Despite the numerous cautions and advisories I had received from a Travel Doctor here in the USA before visiting The Philippines, none of the food I consumed in Iligan or CDO made me feel the slightest bit uncomfortable. I stayed away from drinking tap water as I had been advised and drank bottled water only and certin well known bottled or canned soft drinks and an occasional well known soft drink from taps in Jollibee, also with no problem although I stayed away from ice cubes. Topping it all off with a few bottles of San Miguel at the Club 7 in the evening. So many of the places I went to in Iligan City were shown here on SSC Iligan that many times it seemed as if I had been absorbed right into my Internet Screen here at home and came out on the other end, where so many of these pictures were taken. Big Ben was one of those places.

and what do they do with the malodorous smoke of burning plastic? some "bugoys" use that to kill the neighbor's chicken.

The quantity and quality of both odor and smoke is negligible due to the super high temperature inside the kiln and I think Holcim management also has certain cement quality parameters to follow so hindi nila basta lang nilalagyan ng maraming plastic (by batch siguro). Besides, enclosed naman yung kiln. The final emission passes through the smoke stack then the electrostatic precipitator (EP) where 99.9% of particulate matter are trapped. The EP was the solution why bumalik sa green yung Lugait-Dalipuga-Kiwalan area. Before, puro color white yung mga taniman dahil sa dust from the cement operations. Kaya lang, the firm had to buy 2 EPs (1 for operation, 1 as standby when the other undergoes maintenance), and each unit costs millions of dollars....

05/09/08

ABC, MOTABANG PAGBALIGYA OG NFA RICE
05/09/08

(Divina M. Suson)

Erap visits Iligan, says there was no rice crisis during his term
05/09/2008 | 03:33 PM

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines - Former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada on Friday blamed the Arroyo administration for the rice crisis which continues to hound Filipinos.

In a speech delivered before a crowd of 3,000 Iliganons, Estrada said that sufficient budget was allotted for agriculture during his term and that it made Mindanao the food basket of southern Philippines.

He also said that Malacanang now supports Luzon and Visayas but not Mindanao.

Estrada said that during his time, there was no economic crisis and that there was ample supply of rice.

Now, he said, the country imports rice.

He also reminded the audience that during his term, 48 camps of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in Mindanao were destroyed when he declared an all-out war on March 17, 2000 in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.

Estada lamented that those MILF camps destroyed have been resurrected during the Arroyo administration.

"There should only be one Armed Forces of the Philippines, one constitution and one Filipino nation," Estrada said.

"Economic stability could only be achieved if real peace will be attained,"he added.

Asked about his plans for 2010, Estrada told reporters that he visited Iligan to unify the oppostion in Mindanao.

Estrada also lauded the voters of the first district of Lanao del Norte for installing Congressman Vicente Belmonte, saying that they fought for the truth against his political rivals in the last May 2007 election.

With Estrada were Cagayan de Oro Vice Mayor Vicente Emano, San Juan Mayor JV Ejercito Estrada and former senator Ernesto Maceda. - GMANews.TV
