HANJIN SHIPBUILDING PROJECT SA MISAMIS ORIENTAL, MAGPADAYON
05/29/08

05/29/08

Falling for Tinago Falls
By Jet Encila
Thursday, May 29, 2008

ILIGAN CITY -- Somewhere in the deep jungles of this bustling Northern Mindanao, metropolis is a sanctuary for weary souls seeking to commune with nature.

Nestled in the laidback town of Buru-un in Barangay Ditucalan some 14 kilometers away from downtown, Tinago Falls is one of this city's premiere tourist spots.

It is, like the country's highest -- Maria Cristina, located in the same city -- the creme dela creme of Iligan's 23 magnificent waterfalls.

With the moniker "Land of the Majestic Waterfalls", Tinago Falls is approximately 240-feet high, with ice-cold waters cascading elegantly into a deep and calm basin-like pool resembling a blue-colored lagoon about a hundred feet deep.

Beneath the falls is a small cave where people can enter and listen to the rumbling waters. The lagoon is a perfect place for swimming, at least, for those built for the cold climate.

Nobody is allowed into the water without a life vest on for safety. Entrance fee is P10, excluding fare for the bamboo raft that's a must for first-time visitors.

The "main event" in Tinago Falls is the "pounding" one gets from standing directly beneath the waterfalls (the left side, that is, not the thick white mass, as shown in the photo).

Like thousands of nails hitting your head, the might of onrushing water couldn't be more exhilarating for any adventurer's adrenaline experience. A Tinago escapade is never complete without this kind of "beating."

As the name implies, Tinago Falls is hidden deep in a narrow ravine shrouded by thick foliage about a thousand feet below the ground.

As other popular waterfalls require treks of laborious ascent, the path that leads to this secluded paradise is a well-defined 500-step descent on a winding concrete staircase that makes the trail safer and gives adventurers less stress on their kneecaps. A lung-busting foot march on the same trail back to the top makes the entire trek challenging and unforgettable.

Urban legend has it that scuba divers from foreign lands once tried to fathom the lagoon's depths, until some of them failed to surface from its abyss. Up to this day, some locals insist the lagoon is a thousand feet deeper.

As mystic as its name signifies, they believe supernatural elements they long hail as the true guardians of this enchanted refuge still inhabit the area.

The charm of Tinago Falls is a binding spell to nature lovers who once had to literally crawl their way down through the woods and hold on to tree roots and branches just to reach the site.

The City Government made reaching this veiled natural wonder a breeze with the construction of the concrete staircase, but human intervention has its price as the once lush Eden has now succumbed to intrusion and neglect.

Accessibility and popularity seem to have made Tinago Falls more vulnerable to commercialism, but despite the seeming burden that it has to endure with the daily influx of humanity ever "hungry" to partake of its allure, this sanctuary is one place you shouldn't ever miss.

Iligan City dad leads National Flag Day celebration

Iligan City (29 May) -- Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan, together with other officials of the city, led the simple celebration of the National Flag Day today, 28th May, at the city public plaza.

"The reverence and respect for the accepted symbols of national solidarity are indicative of true patriotism and love of country. In order to develop and consecrate such sublime virtues and inculcate in the minds of our people a just pride in their native land," Mayor Lawrence said.

The program started with the evolution of the Philippine Flags, followed by the re-enactment of the making of the present Philippine Flag.

The raising of the Philippine was executed by the city's chief executive, accompanied by the city vice mayor together with the city councilors, and the national and local government heads of offices.

Domingo V. Samson, schools division superintendent, Department of Education (DepEd), Iligan City, who chairs the committee for this celebration, said that part of the activity was the ceremonial burning of old and tattered flags. The Panunumpa sa Watawat ng Pilipinas, and the reading of the Flag Code was conducted by the Boy Scouts of the Philippines Council Scout Executive of Iligan.

Samson said that the local government of Iligan has been celebrating the National Flag Day every year, and DepEd has been assigned to take charge of the program. Also, we collect old flags from the different schools here and encourage other offices from the local and national line agencies endorsing old flags to our office, and have it dug in the soil, said Samson.

First computer lab for teacher training launched in Mindanao State U
05/29/2008 | 05:10 PM

MANILA, Philippines - A Philippine group specializing in the integration of information technology in education has linked with a World Bank-funded non-government organization to build computer labs for teacher training.

The Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED), in collaboration with international group World Links, recently inaugurated the first computer laboratory at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).

With 11 networked computers and broadband Internet access, the MSU-IIT lab is expected to serve as a resource hub for in-service and pre-service teachers. In-service teachers refers to those currently employed in educational institutions, while those in the pre-service category pertains to college students majoring in education.

The facility is intended to train teachers and educators for the effective use of new technologies to enhance classroom learning.

At the heart of the center’s program is a four-phase training curriculum for teachers and teacher educators on digital literacy, instructional design of ICT-enhanced activities, and computer- and Web-supported educational collaboration, which will be delivered by MSU-IIT master teachers trained by World Links Philippines.

World Links Philippines is part of a Southeast Asia-wide program of the international non-governmental organization World Links, which has extensive experience in Africa, Latin America, and the Arab region in developing local capacity for ICT-curriculum integration.

Funding for this regional program is being provided by the Japan Social Development Fund, which is administered by the World Bank. Other countries covered by the grant are Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR and Vietnam.

FIT-ED, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, has spearheaded several local education initiatives in the last decade. Such initiatives include partnering with private companies and government agencies.

Following a three-year implementation plan developed by MSU-IIT with FIT-ED, the center will deliver teacher professional development workshops to teacher educators, pre-service teachers and in-service teachers in Lanao del Norte and the rest of Northern Mindanao.

In addition, the lab will spearhead the development of ICT-supported instructional materials, provide pedagogical support and mentoring to local teachers and teacher educators, initiate and support research

Muslim OSY learns ALIVE, reports DepEd Iligan

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (May 30) -- The Iligan City Division under the Department of Education (DepEd) Region 10 has just launched the literacy program for the Muslim Out-of-School Youth (OSY) at the Tambacan Elementary School, Barangay Tambacan, this city, slated 29th May 2008.

Domingo V. Samson, schools division superintendent, DepEd Iligan, said that the Tambacan Elementary School is the pilot project site in Region 10 of the so-called ALIVE- the Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education in Alternative Learning System (ALS).

The program caters not only to the OSYs but to Muslim adults as well, said Samson. The 'Asatidz'-Arabic term for teacher, shall handle classes at the respective Mosque in the area every Saturdays and Sundays only, 3 to 4 hours per week, with a minimum of 25 to 30 students in a class for a period of 10 months, as required by the Education Department, added Samson.

Present during the launching were Ms. Sevilla A. Panaligan, chief of the Continuing Education, DepEd-Bureau of Alternative Learning System (BALS), Central Office, DepEd Manila, Assistant Regional Director Nona Estilo of DepEd Region 10, Asst. Chief ALS Region 10 Gil Constantino, the barangay officials of Tambacan, and the Rotary Club of Iligan Bay represented by its incoming president Atty. Arthur Abudiente.

Panaligan explained that the program is funded at the national level through the BALS and releasing of funds shall be in quarterly basis channeling DepEd Iligan and Rotary Iligan- as the service provider shall receive the funds for operation, DepEd Iligan to only provide technical assistance. "We have to have a check and balance, parallel to the releases of funds for this project," Panaligan stressed.

Start of classes shall go with the DepEd's reguilar schedule for this year's school opening in June. In due time, we will be integrating livelihood skills training to the recipients of this program, Panaligan added. (PIA Iligan)

Marawi bishop leads opposition vs Napocor project
05/31/2008 | 08:15 AM

MANILA, Philippines - The bishop of Marawi in Lanao del Norte is leading opposition against a National Power Corp. (Napocor) proposal to submerge seven rice-land villages for electrification.

Bishop Edwin dela Peña said Napocor's proposed program will compromise the welfare of the people in the targeted villages, leading to loss of livelihood.

"On top of development, the primary concern must be the well-being of the people and not solely the interest of progress," he said in a statement on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website.

Dela Peña said that the Ranaw Pat A Pangampong (sultanates), composed of Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Iligan City and Marawi City, is against the proposal to inundate seven villages of Baloi town.

Baloi, a fourth-class municipality in Lanao del Norte, hosts the Agus IV Hydroelectric Power Plant located in the village of Nangka, which is 18 km from Iligan City,

Agus IV is the first underground hydroelectric plant in Mindanao and the third in the Philippines, located 120 meters below ground face. The plant is said to be sufficient to power a city more than 12 times the size of Iligan City, or to run 20 cement factories.

Dela Peña said he is supporting the clamor of the people to prevent the implementation of the project.

He added submerging the seven villages is tantamount to destroying the seat of power of the Sultanate of Baloi.

"If we allow this project to continue we are tolerating the massive destructions to our lands and communities," said Dela Peña.

Dela Peña said that he is not against development especially if it will benefit the people, but if progress will lead to destruction then the Church will not tolerate it.

"We acknowledge the need for development but in such a way that it will not prejudice the lands, lives and livelihood of our people," he said.

He said, however, that if the people will give their consent to the proposal, he will respect their decision. - GMANews.TV

SEPTEMBRE 20, 2009 NGA COMPLETION DATE SA WATER EXPANSION PROJECT, WALA MAUSAB
05/31/08

(mta)

Guys, during our last meeting at DTI, it was mentioned by one of the members to come out with a nickname or a monicker for Iligan City ICT. There were many suggestions but one - "CyberBay Iligan". Sounds hightech, deem fit for Iligan, and has a name recall. It was agreed by principle to adopt the nickname though not yet official. The nickname "CyberBay Iligan" is to emphasize the collaboration between government, academia and industry in harnessing the technical talent and IT manpower as the key driving force in transforming the city to becoming the next ICT Hub.

Can you guys help us decide whether to adopt and make "CyberBay Iligan" the official nickname for Iligan's ICT? Please share your views. Suggestions are very much welcome.

NFA denies report of panic buying in Lanao Norte
06/05/2008 | 01:59 AM

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – National Food Authority (NFA) Provincial Manager of Lanao del Norte Raymundo Cotiangco on Wednesday denied reports of panic buying of subsidized rice in the region.

Earlier reports said Davao City residents scramble for NFA rice, but nothing of that sort happened in Lanao del Norte, Cotiangco said.

He also said that the province has not restricted selling of government rice to one kilo per family, adding that NFA accredited operators still sell two kilos of the grain for every household each day.

He said that Iligan City and the province of Lanao del Norte has sufficient supply of rice and would not raise prices from the current P18.25 per kilo.

“As of this time, many people want to take advantage of good quality rice at P18.25 per kilo and people troop to accredited NFA outlets, but as to panic buying, there was none," Cotiangco said.

Cotiangco admitted, however, there are two varieties of NFA rice to be distributed in the province and in Iligan City for a price of P25.00 a kilo.

NFA rice consumed in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte is about 7,600 bags a day for a population of about 800,000.

Meanwhile, Representative Vicente Belmonte of the First district of Lanao del Norte urged NFA to accredit Barangay chairmen to sell rice to their constituents.

Cotiangco, however, said the NFA is looking into the proposal. “That is a very good proposal but we have to consider the guidelines for distribution." - Ric Clet, GMANews.TV

Sounds great but how about giving it a try reversing the words, this way the location would be identified before the subject and would also it would appear and sound similar to " Iligan bay " which appears on the map. Using my imagination, that could be turned into a reality with a " Floating Cafe " with a nice sized cabin cruser or larger ship out in the bay with built in Cyber Cafe connecting via WiFi on the shore. Now that could make an interesting pic here on SSC .

World Bank-funded group opens up first of 6 PC labs for teacher training

By MELVIN G. CALIMAG

A World Bank-backed non-profit group has inaugurated a new computer laboratory at a top Mindanao university to train teachers and would-be teachers in the region for the integration of ICT in education.

The new facility at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSUIIT) in Iligan City was funded by World Links Philippines and implemented through the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FITED).

The laboratory, dubbed World Links Philippines Training Center, has 11 networked computers and broadband Internet access. The project has a total cost of P500,000 but the bulk of the money will be spent on teacher training, according to MSU-IIT chancellor Marcelo Salazar.

The computer laboratory in MSU-IIT is the first of six World Links Centers that are scheduled to be launched by the end of June in various parts of the country.

The labs to be launched are in Western Visayas College of Science and Technology in Iloilo, Saint Louis University College of Education in Baguio City, Mariano Marcos State University in Laoag, the Department of Education Province Division Office in Cebu City, and the Cordillera Regional Science High School in La Trinidad, Benguet.

The MSU-IIT lab is expected to serve as a resource hub for in-service and pre-service teachers. In-service refers to teachers currently employed in educational institutions, while preservice pertains to college students majoring in education.

Specifically, the facility is intended to train teachers and educators for the effective use of new technologies to enhance classroom learning.

The computer center at MSU-IIT has a target of 95 trainees in 2008-2009, 100 trainees in 2009-2010, and 80 trainees in 2010-2011.

Liezl Formilleza-Dunuan, FITED deputy director for programs and research, the setting up of the computer center is a reward for MSU-IIT for completing various IT-related education projects and for demonstrating its ability to equip teachers in the area with the proper ICT skills.

According to Dr. Emmanuel Lagare, vice president for academic affairs of MSU System, the school started its IT education initiatives "long ago" also as a way of assisting teachers from Iligan and nearby areas.

Lagare said the university has taken part or currently participating in different undertakings such Intel Teach program, Project POSITIVE (Philippine Open Source Initiative), and the iEskwela program of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology.

Lydie Paderanga, dean of the College of Education where the lab is located, said her own college has been consciously upgrading the ICT proficiency of its students.

"We have, in fact, complied with the administrative order from the government to increase the units of educational technology as a subject from three units to six units," she said.

Paderanga said 80 percent of their 1,700 education students are science majors. "As a whole, MSU-IIT has the highest concentration of science and technology scholars in the whole of Mindanao," she said.

Following a three-year implementation plan developed by MSU-IIT with FITED, the center will deliver teacher professional development workshops to teacher educators, pre-service teachers and in-service teachers in Lanao del Norte and the rest of Northern Mindanao.

In addition, the lab will spearhead the development of ICT-supported instructional materials, provide pedagogical support and mentoring to local teachers and teacher educators, initiate and support research activities in the area of educational technology use, and conduct community outreach activities.

World Links Philippines is part of a Southeast Asia-wide program of the international non-governmental organization World Links, which has extensive experience in Africa, Latin America, and the Arab region in developing local capacity for ICT-curriculum integration.

What time of the day do you take your photos ? I would guess it is early in the morning as I don't see much activity on the streets in many of your pics. When I visited, the roads were crammed with vehicles, primarily the Jeepneys. I really have to admire the skill and patience of those Jeepney Drivers. For someone who had never seen or had the opportunity to ride a jeepney before I visited Iligan, I had a great time making use of them. One evening after enjoying dinner at Big Ben I had the pleasure of experencing a ride on a Calesa

Thanks in advance for taking some pics of the new Chow King, Tibanga as it was in the construction stages when I was there.

I arrived in Iligan with no luggage as it had been " misplaced " by China Air and took 3 days to catch up with me in Iligan. At times I wondered if it would ever show up at all LOL so the next morning my friends took me to Gaisano Dept Store. I knew this store was going to be replaced by the new mall so I was happy to see it in its present form.

Where I live, in the suburbs of New York City, we used to have Department Stores similar to Gaisano, Iligan and most of them have dissapeared in favor of shopping malls. Going to Gaisano, Iligan in its present form brought back a lot of fond memories of how things used to be here when I was growing up. I see many things like that in the pics of Iligan that are posted here and it was one of the reasons I wanted to come there for a visit.

I found the Gaisano Dept. Store in Iligan to appear well staffed and they were all very courteous and polite to me when I was there. Not knowing if I would ever see my luggage again, I bought a bunch of clothes and I was well satisfied with my purchases. They altered the lengths on some pants I bought while I waited which would have been something unusual for where I live.

Actually, one of the first places I did want to go was to buy some " local " clothes so I would not look so " out of town " in appearance and with the lack of any change of clothes at all, I had no other choice !

I look forward to visiting Iligan City again, hopefully some time next year.

Here is a link to a followup video I recently put on Youtube. I gave SSC-Iligan a 40 second plug on my video.

Philippine Travel Journal - Prologue
June 7, 2008

Today I say goodbye to the USA as I travel to the island of Mindanao in the Philippines. I will be visiting the cities of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro. The purpose of this trip is to spend some time with my off-shore developers at NewHelix in Iligan. NewHelix supports WorthPoint in the development and maintenance of our public-facing site along with many other efforts on the back end that our visitors never see.

When I first started at WorthPoint my first responsibility was to establish an Agile development methodology between the requirements providers (product owners), management and our NewHelix developers. The implementation has been received with mixed reviews, some good and others identifying room for improvement. My CTO, Andy Forbes, and I both realized that we could not reach the level we required in our development efforts without some face to face communications. Skype is a great resource but can only facilitate communication to a certain extent. Cultural and language differences, though they are fewer when working with a Philippine company, do not help either. I've found it increasingly difficult to present certain concepts like design, development and management techniques. This trip is for me to present the WorthPoint expectations, identify areas of improvement, encourage the areas they are currently doing well, and then ensure that the information is received correctly on their end. Once this is accomplished then Skype communications should flow much easier. I do plan on making recurring visits though not as long as this first one.

I never did much at all with Pics on the PC before I started websurfing Iligan City a couple of years ago. I could not help but notice all of the video slide shows on youtube and wondered how it was done. I used to do a lot of that kind of thing with analog magnetic tape. Thanks to " Photos By IRBO " I returned home from my visit to Iligan with hundreds of quality digital photos.

After over 12 hours, I finally figured out how to sequence some of them and include captions ect. As these were all still pics and I found out how to add captions there was no need to complicate things for myself by adding audio.

Amoungst many others, I put in a nice plug for " The SSC-Iligan Crew " on the credits at the end of the video / slide show presentation. It is not error free however as this has been my first attempt at doing this. I hope these pics will give you a good idea of how much fun and enjoyment I had on my first visit to Iligan City and all of the hops it took to get there from the opposite side of the world !

A few years ago I never heard of Iligan City and barely knew where the Philippines was. It was quite by accident that while websurfing something came up on my screen with a name and adderss in Iligan City. I did a websearch on it and it looked like an interesting place with certain things reminiescent of when I was growing up, lets just say a " few " decades ago. I found more and more websites with Iligan Info and pics on them and kept websurfing ! I made some genuine friends in Iligan along the way which culminated in my recent visit to Iligan CIty to experience it in person for myself. Many of the people I met and spoke with during my visit were quite impressed with the knowledge I had gained about their city, and some I had to really convince that I did not live there and this was the first time I had been there. If there is as much info and pics about any other place in the world as there is about Iligan I guess anyone could go on a virtual vacation just about anywhere they wanted to without having to leave their PC.

What have and continue to be " key " websites for the latest happenings in Iligan and Mindanao are : Skyscrapercity.com , Mindanao.com , Youtube.com, Iligan.gov.ph, Liveinthephilippines.com and a few Ph commercial news websites.

A few months ago there was a " disturbance " near City Plaza near where I believe a talent show was taking place which resulted in a few people being hospitalized. In less than one hour affter this happened I knew about it and saw some pics right here on SSC-Iligan. The coverage of the calamity in Iligan last November was described in text, photos and video in great detail here on SSC and youtube.

Soon after I began websurfing Iligan City, it was not difficult to comprehend how much pride the regular posters here and elsewhere on the internet have in their city and it was one of the primary factors in giving me the desire to come for a visit. After seeing hundreds of pics of Iligan, during my visit I visited the exact location where many of the pics and videos were taken. Occasionally I had a feeling as if I had been sitting at home half way around the world and dove right into my internet screen and came out on the other end...... Iligan CIty !

Yeah. I remember. There was this Traffic Light Pharmacy near St. Michael's College. Was it really that popular that the whole area was named after it? Whatever happened to that pharmacy. It's gone now.

TKC Steel locks in iron ore supply

TKC Steel Corp. said its Iligan-based subsidiary secured a contract with a mining firm for the supply of iron ore in Mindanao.

The firm told the Philippine Stock Exchange that its unit Treasure Steelworks Corp. (TSC) has negotiated with Vinc Vita Mining Corp. for the supply or iron ore, the basic raw material for its blast furnace projects. The 20-year old mining firm will supply TKC Steel with up to 3 million metric tons of the ore each year for the next 5 years.

TKC Steel said the processing of the iron ore will be done through a “beneficiating process” to upgrade its iron ore concentration. The product will then be used for the company’s blast furnace and for possible export.

Last year, the company formed a joint venture with the Rizal-based Kooperatiba ng mga Katutubo Remontado at Dumagat ng Sta, Ines in Rizal. The cooperative owns the land that has several mining tenements with 30 million metric tons of iron reserves.

Under the agreement, TKC Steel would own 70 percent of the joint venture company.

The agreement also stipulated that the cooperative would receive “social benefits provided by TKC Steel” besides the financial rewards due them from the mining operations.

TKC Steel also signed an agreement with Mikro-Tech Inc. and Karanglan Resources and Mining Corp. (KRMC), which will be assigning their rights to the joint venture, including exploration, development, and operation of the claims.

TKC Steel would then buy the iron ore output of the joint venture firm for its blast furnace facility that is set to operate by the last quarter of next year. Iron ore is the primary raw material for the manufacture of steel billets, TSC’s main product. The firm said similar arrangements are applicable to its joint venture with the Rizal-based cooperative.

The company said it may export iron ore in excess of its annual requirement now that it is moving toward locking in its supply source in the country.

Aboitiz Group expands its feed mills
// 05 jun 2008

Animal feed manufacturer the Aboitiz group is expanding its feed mill operations to Iligan City in the Philippines to supply customers in the Visayas and Mindanao areas, according to CEO Jon Ramon M. Aboitiz.

The expansion of their subsidiary Pilmico Foods' feed mill to Lanao del Norte is needed to support growing demand in the south and to reduce pressure on its Tarlac mill, which has been operating at full capacity, according to Mr Abiotiz.

He further added that "Construction of the Iligan milling complex, with a capacity of 10,000 t/month began in June last year and will be finished in two months. It will be operated by our Fil-Am Foods.
In addition the Aboitiz group will also expand Fil-Am Foods' pig farms by building new finishing and breeder facilities in Tarlac. These will be commercially operational by 2009 and 2010, respectively. Pilmico and Fil-Am Foods will spend Peso 900 million (m) for both capacity expansion projects. In addition, the company will build more grain silos this year to give Pilmico the largest flourmill storage capacity in the Philippines."

At the end of March the two Aboitiz subsidiaries income distribution grew 20% to P156 m year on year. Revenues of its flour business rose 28% from a year ago due to higher selling prices. Fil-Am Foods' income grew by 125% due to strong volume sales for its pigs business and favorable prices for both pigs and feeds.

TKC Steel to export steel billets to ME

Philippine Star - Wednesday, June 11

TKC Steel Corp., through its subsidiary Treasure Steelworks Corp., will export steel billets to the Middle East this year, the company's top executive said.

"With world steel prices at their highest levels, the opportunity presented itself for the company to take advantage of opening new markets for Philippine steel billets and realize substantial gains from the situation," said Anthony Dizon, president of TKC Steel.

Dizon noted it will mark the first time in a long while that Philippine-made steel billets will be exported overseas.

The initial shipment of 10,000 metric tons of five SPPS grade will be delivered to Saudi Arabia by the end of this month.

Dizon said the steel billets will be manufactured in Treasure Steelworks, plant in Iligan City.

He said the deal was a good opportunity for TKC Steel especially since he expects monthly delivery for other Middle Eastern buyers.

Dizon revealed that TKC is currently negotiating with other foreign buyers, with a monthly shipment of about 10,000 to 20,000 metric tons.

Dizon said they are looking to expand their market especially since their company has increased its capacity following the upgrading and modernization program of its two facilities in Xiamen, China, namely Treasure Steelworks and ZZ Stronghold Steel.

TKC Steel is the only steel manufacturing company listed at the Philippine Stock Exchange.

It has controlling equity interest in Treasure Steelworks Corp. which operates the largest billet-making plant in the country. It likewise owns Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of steel pipes in Fujian, China. - Ma. Elisa P. Osorio/Philstar

TKC Steel to export billets
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:03:00 06/11/2008

TKC Steel Corp. said its subsidiary Treasure Steelworks Corp. recently signed a contract to export steel billets to the Saudi Arabia.

It said this would the first time in recent history that Philippine-made steel billets will be exported.

TKC Steel president Anthony Dizon said the contract called for an initial shipment of 10,000 metric tons of 5SPPS grade and that the company expected to make the shipment by the end of the month.

The billets are being prepared at Treasure Steelworks’ plant in the southern city of Iligan, he said.

Dizon said negotiations with other, prospective foreign buyers were in final stages for monthly shipments of 10,000 to 20,000 metric tons of billets.

He said exports were part of a strategy to make use of increased capacity to be brought about by upgrading and modernization of the plants of Treasure Steelworks and another subsidiary, Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd., a manufacturer of steel pipes in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian.

TKC Steel is the only steel manufacturer listed on the Philippine Stock Exchange. It has controlling interests in Treasure Steelworks, which operates the largest billet-making plant in the Philippines in terms of installed capacity, and in Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steel Works.

The company is owned by the Tiu family, which also has interests in the banking and tourism sectors.

A total of 149 Iligan workers were sent to subic recently to work at a shipbuilding plant in Olongapo City.

"Those sent were mostly welders, fabricators and erectors," says former Vice-Mayor Pedro Generalao who now heads "Task Force Hanjin"(created by Mayor Lawrence Cruz to get manpower from Iligan for employment at Hanjin Corporation).

(divina m. suson)

Iligan mayor cites 4 essential human freedoms on Independence Day

Iligan City (June 12) -- "Independence means freedom. It is indeed significant that we celebrate this most important day in the history of our country, right here, at our city's Freedom Park (formerly called public city plaza), a stoic symbol of our freedom and independence," said Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of City of Iligan.

Speaking at the city's celebration of 110th Philippine Independence Day, Cruz lauded the overwhelming participation of the different sectors that joined the civic-military parade. The procession passed through the city's major streets and then converged at the Freedom Park, where a traditional celebration of the event was conducted.

Cruz emphasized the four essential human freedoms that we enjoy as an independent nation.

Firstly, the mayor said, it is the freedom of speech and expression. The second is freedom of religion. Thirdly, is the freedom from want. And the fourth is freedom from fear.

"I would like to dwell briefly on the third, which is freedom from want, because despite the 110 years of Philippine Independence, it is our struggle for freedom from want that has posed the biggest challenge to us Filipinos. Freedom from want means to be free from the state of destitution or poverty," Cruz said.

Every administration, whether national or local, has, for its objective, the alleviation of poverty, which sadly afflicts many Filipinos and many Iliganons. This problem has even been aggravated more recently with the unbearable price increases of fuel, rice and all other commodities.

There are no easy solutions to this problem. But this threat to our freedom from want calls for our common understanding, efforts and sacrifice. We need to knit our muscles, change habits, learn to be self-reliant and apply cost-saving initiatives.

Cruz reiterated President Arroyo's slogan, "Labanan ang Kahirapan." With the help of the Lord almighty, we shall strive hard to overcome this threat to our freedom, to our freedom from want. For there are really no great people in this world, only great challenges which ordinary people like you and me rise to meet, said Cruz.

"Like in the past years, this day is a day of remembrance and thanksgiving. We remember and we express our gratitude to all those whose vision, idealism, courage and heroism, sowed the seeds of freedom with their blood, sweat and tears, that we may today enjoy the fruits of liberty and independence," Cruz concluded. Yeah. I remember. There was this Traffic Light Pharmacy near St. Michael's College. Was it really that popular that the whole area was named after it? Whatever happened to that pharmacy. It's gone now.

The pharmacy was named after the place. That junction (Roxas/Quezon Ave.) was the location of Iligan's first and only traffic light for quite a time, that it became a landmark. Iligan residents who's been there since the 70s will not fail to locate the place if you say "sa traffic light."

hello po sa mga peeps dito sa ILIGAN - THE CITY OF WATERFALLS! buti pa sa thread nato peaceful, pwede po ba ako mag-chill dito?
i got a question, i remember we went to this waterfall, marami syang steps pataas and very steep pababa. is that the Tinago falls? sa 90s pa kasi yun, so forgot ko ang name. but very beautiful po ang falls na yun, Iligan reminds me of Portland (PDX) Oregon. kasi when you drive the interstate (expressway) of PDX dami mo makikita mga falls sa side like the Multnomah Falls.
