Alingatong July 18th, 2008, 03:23 AM Senate President Visits Iligan http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/jeannette/old_mayors/villar.jpg Senate President “Manny” Villar, Jr. visited Iligan July 15. He was warmly welcomed by Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz, Vice Mayor Henry Dy and the city councilors at the Sangguniang Panlungsod Hall where a short meeting was held. Senator Villar talked briefly about his program for “Overseas Filipino Workers” and also answered questions regarding the state of our economy, politics, among other issues. During the meeting, he expressed his concern to review the “Oil Deregulation Law” and “Value-Added Tax” for petroleum products to possibly find ways to ease up the hardship brought by the seeming non-stop increase of oil products. He also confirmed his plan on running for the presidency in the 2010 elections. Villar also assured the city officials that he will support the move of Congressman “Varf” Belmonte in making Iligan a lone district -- the house bill to this effect is already with the Senate. (GSPI) will be opening today its mill that will make the country self-reliant on steel plates and, at the same, support the fast-growing domestic shipbuilding industry. An industry source said that aside from supplying the demand of Philippine manufacturers, GSPI will also be exporting steel plates to other Southeast Asian countries. The Philippines imports about 80,000 tons of steel plates annually and this demand is expected to be filled up by GSPI through its new mill. The source said GSPI will be producing steel plates with a variety of thickness and applications to cater to various applications such as welded girders, flooring, storage tanks, machinery parts, barges, shipbuilding, marine and offshore construction, pipes and tube products, boilers and abrasion-resistant plates. “This augurs well for the pursuit of the Philippines to become self-reliant on steel products, and this is timely because the shipbuilding industry is growing very fast with South Korea’s Hanjin already in the country,” the industry official said. GSPI, the source added, is well-positioned to cater to Hanjin’s needs as the Indian-owned firm committed to produce top quality steel plates at competitive prices. Hanjin Heavy Industries operates a shipbuilding facility and Subic, Zambales. The Korean-owned company has contracts to build six ships until 2010 totaling $1.2 billion. The amount of the investment and the capacity of the GSPI plant will be announced by the company in today’s inauguration ceremony at its Iligan plant to be graced by the company’s local and international buyers, Indian diplomats, Trade Undersecretary and Board of Investments managing head Elmer Hernandez and other government officials. The initial batch of steel plates will be sold by GSPI to domestic customers within the month, the source said. The opening of the steel plates mill also put GSPI another step closer to its goal of fully integrating its operations. At present, the company is producing hot-rolled coils, hot-rolled plates, cold rolled coils (full-hard and annealed) and tinplates, with total annual capacity of over two million tons. I did visit some really great hardware and electrical stores in Iligan which are few and far between where I live these days. Years ago I used to have accounts with electronic parts distributors in my area as I was in the repair business then. All of those wholesale distributors have become history as well since so many things here today are not profitable to repair, just toss in the garbage and replace with new is more cost effective in most stiuations now. Nice to see that there are still some places where it is profitable to have a repair business. I enjoyed quite a few hours looking at some of these places in Iligan, bought a few items to bring home with me too. g0Rs July 18th, 2008, 03:58 PM P445-M water project tops Iligan agenda ILIGAN CITY — Iligan City, dubbed as industrial city of the south and city of waterfalls, has been experiencing inadequate potable water supplies in key areas of the city. In lieu of this, the Land Bank of the Philippines finally approved the P445 million loan at the end of 2006 for a sustainable potable water development that would respond to the people’s clamor. Reelected City Mayor Lawrence Lluch, in his inaugural address, urged the Iligan City Waterworks System’s (ICWS) technical expert to study carefully and seriously on the details of the feasibility studies in order to attain a quality and sustainable water project that would answer the needs for the next 10 years or more. This will complement the two pumping stations in Barangay Hinaplanon, the newly completed reservoir in Barangay Luinab and the Tatay spring in the western side of Iligan. The said priority project will also benefit the industries, farmlands, hotel and tourism industry, health and sanitation. (Richel V. Gumapon Dipolog City (18 July) -- Everyone was nostalgic about his past with the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City. The longing to see again that familiar landscape of the school that gives no-nonsense training to its learners has become so intense in the heart of each alumnus. For each graduate, studying at IIT is both an honor and privilege, as one alumnus aptly said: not everyone who wants to study at IIT can enter the school, and not all studying at this school can finish his/her course here. Just very recently, IIT alumni here and abroad have trooped to Iligan to join the 40th charter anniversary of MSU-IIT. Filled with excitement, the alumni went straight to their respective colleges to see their former classmates and professors. Some could not immediately recall the names of their classmates, yet pretending they still remember for fear they might be tagged as "guwang" (elderly). Another alumnus could not help but recall how he survived his biology class. There were 21 of them in that section and only 10 made it. Still fresh in his mind that only one got a grade of "2," two got "2.5," another two with "2.75" and five received "3." Other graduates have shared the same experience not only in their science and mathematics classes but in other subjects as well. "But everything was worth it," one quipped adding that what he had gone through made him "more prepared for the challenges that came his way after graduation." Through the years, MSU-IIT has evolved into a vanguard learning institution not only here in Mindanao but in the entire country as well. Its science and mathematics courses have been recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as center of excellence. During the fellowship night, thousands of alumni converged at the university gymnasium. There were those who looked as mature as their former professors. But a good number have remained in their good and sexy shape despite the years that passed. Highlighting the fellowship night was the distribution of the 2008 Ten Outstanding MSU-IIT Alumni (TOMA) awards to graduates who have excelled in their respective field of endeavors. The awardees were graduates from the College of Science and Mathematics (CSC), College of Business Administration (CBA), School of Engineering Technology (SET), College of Education (CED) and College of Arts and Social Sciences (CASS). TOMA award in public service was given to Jose Lacio Zalsos, an accountancy graduate in 1977, who is now serving as city councilor of Iligan. He is the father of the long running KASADYA street dancing project, which is held annually during Iligan City fiesta. Ryan B. Balili, a summa cum laude graduate of Bachelor of Science in Physics in 2001, was recognized in the field of condensed matter Physics. Balili was named the most outstanding DOST-SEI scholar in the whole Philippines in 2002. His most important achievement, which earned him his TOMA award was his Young Researcher Award from Physics Status Solids Group of the United of America in 2006. He is now pursuing his Doctor of Philosophy in Physics at the University of Pittsburg, USA. In the field of mathematics, TOMA award went to Joselito A. Uy, Ph.D., who has been recipient of three national scientific awards given by the National Academy of Science and Technology (NAST) and the Philippine Council for Advanced Science and Technology Research and Development (PCASTRD-DOST). He has also developed a simple and efficient algorithm in constructing a telephone network with a minimal cost. TOMA award for visual arts went to Norberto Monterona, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Industrial Education, major in drafting. He is now based in Canada and has already held 16 solo arts exhibitions in the different parts of the globe. His art works are now displayed in the museums and galleries in Canada, USA, the Philippines, Australia, Hong Kong and South Korea. Ms. Baicon c. Macaraya, a graduate of Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 1997, has been recognized for his strong advocacy for women's rights and peace in Mindanao. She is presently heading the United Nations World Food Programme based in Iligan City. Rogelio C. Garcia, a graduate from the school of engineering technology in 1977 has been recognized for his outstanding achievement in the field of management. Out of his sheer industry, diligence and dedication, he rose from the ranks to become an assistant manager of an American company, Flour Mideast, managing and administering 6,000 people from 34 countries around the globe. Another alumnus from the CSM with the degree of Bachelor of Science in Physics got the TOMA award for material science. Reynaldo M. Vequizo, who finished his Ph.D. in Physics at the Nigata University in Japan, has been awarded best research presentor in Japan and the first Filipino to be honored as Outstanding Young Researcher by the Japan Society of Applied Physics in 2006. The three other awardees were Ralph S. Galan in the field of literature, Dr. Adelfa C. Silor for education, and Dr. Mylene Uy for chemistry. Prof. Darwin Manubag, president of the Association of IIT Alumni Foundation, Inc. (AIITAFI) was overwhelmed by the response of the alumni in attending this year's grand alumni homecoming. "I did not expect that we would have this number of participants," he said. Manubag also expressed optimism that this year's attendance may be doubled, if not tripled in next year's gathering which will be spearheaded by the College of Business Administration. Prof. Manubag together with other graduates of MSU-IIT is raring to see one and all in the 3rd grand alumni homecoming on July 11, 2009. (PIA-ZN) g0Rs July 19th, 2008, 01:19 PM Global Steel reopens plate mill amid increased world demand By Elaine Ruzul S. Ramos ILIGAN City—Global Steel Philippines Inc. has reopened its plate mill in its manufacturing complex here amid increased global demand. The company said its entry into steel plate production would translate into $26 million in monthly foreign exchange savings for the Philippines. It plans to produce around 20,000 metric tons of plates a month and increase its production gradually. Sangram Mohanty, vice president for corporate communications, told reporters that Global Steel’s plates would address the requirements of both the export and domestic markets. “Changing trends and global needs have made it more viable for us to go into steel plates production,” said Mohanty. Global Steel’s steel plates can be used in various applications such as construction equipment, shipping and drilling platforms, pipelines, tunnel supports and excavator shovels. “We will supply everyone. We will export. We will also substitute imports. The Philippines will no longer depend on imported steel products,” said Mohanty. The Philippines imports over 72,000 MT per annum from China, Russia and Ukraine for commercial grades, and from Japan, Korea, Europe for high-tensile special grade plates. The company said its entry into the plate market was advantageous to consumers because of competitive pricing, savings on freight costs and quick technical service without compromising on quality. Global Steel is also seeking exports to Asian countries, including Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia and India, which imports 700,000 MT per year. Mohanty said the launch of the plate mill was in line with the company’s strategy of fully rehabilitating the assets of the defunct National Steel Corp., as stipulated in an agreement when it acquired the facility in 2004. The company’s sales volume in the first half of the year increased 27 percent to 183,211 MT ($143.7 million) from 144,000 MT ($96.5 million) year-on-year. They can look to the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) as an alternative to affordable quality education. Celebrating its achievements for the education of Mindanaoans for 40 years was what the excitement was all about during this year’s Charter Day of the MSU-IIT last July 12. The weeklong celebration featured educational, cultural, sports and social events that ended with a motorcade around Iligan, a Charter Day program and the Grand Alumni Homecoming bringing in visitors from here and abroad—a no mean feat for an institute that, in 1968, started with six faculty members who were paid, according to pioneer Melvin Roscom, P6 an hour to teach English, Spanish, Mathematics and the Social Sciences to its first 300 students. At present, there are 544 faculty members teaching 11,120 scholars and non-scholars, who, on the average pay P200 per academic unit because subsidized by government. Back channels In 1968 when the IIT, through back channeling and secret maneuverings led by then MSU Vice President for Academic Affairs Quiterio Miravite, with the blessings of the late MSU President Antonio Isidro, integrated the Lanao Technical School in Iligan. On July 12, IIT received its charter through Republic Act No. 5363 becoming the first external and, later, autonomous campus of what would become the MSU system consisting of six campuses at present. Today, IIT has various imposing buildings spread around a 13.917 hectares of land facing east beside the Iligan Bay. Recently, it inaugurated its Bahay Alumni beside the about-to-be completed building for Peace education. IIT’s robust development is part of its commitment as it envisions itself to be “a globally competitive institution of higher learning committed to excellence in science and technology for the sustainable development of Southern Philippines.” Promise And IIT has lived up to its promise in providing technical manpower for the industries in Mindanao and the rest of the country producing each year, over a thousand graduates in its undergraduate and graduate programs. It has also produced outstanding young scientists among its faculty members in mathematics (1), biology (3), physics (1) and chemical engineering (1). World-class Even as IIT highlights science and technology faculty achievers and engineering board passers in every annual report, it does not neglect a holistic nurturing of its students as the institute continues to develop its academic programs, researches, publications, linkages, infrastructure and cultural activities such as the support of its resident cultural troupes, as well as its hosting, in the last 15 years, the Iligan National Writers Workshop, one of only three workshops in the country institutionalized by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts. All this is geared towards that dream of achieving “world-class” renown in the words of the present Chancellor Marcelo Salazar thus challenging future leaders who must continue to realize the Institute’s aspirations such as the acquisition of a modern library and with it, the latest information technology equipment, state of the art science and engineering technology laboratories and more classrooms. Former IIT Vice President and Department of Education Undersecretary Manaros B. Boransing said it well when he proudly declared that IIT has “maintained its standards” compared to “other educational institutions which have declined in quality at the departure of pioneer leadership.” IIT’s pride, indeed, is well-placed for its achievements have been well-earned at 40. I feel privlidged to have been given a four hour tour of MSU-IIT by some of the Alumni and present students on Graduation Day 2008. As I am a technical person myself, I could really appreciate the quality of technical education offered at this University. I enjoyed having the opportunity to meet and chat with some of the faculty and staff of this fine university including one of the vice Chancellors who presented me with the " Pendant " ( ? ) logo of MSU-IIT upon the completion of my visit to this University of Excellence. This is my most treasured item I acquired in Iligan City during my visit and it is something I will treasure and have great pride in having it. With the quality of education in such technical trades as IT, Electronics, AIr Conditioning and refridgeration and Automation I have seen here create an impression that graduates of these courses ( as well as many others ) graduate from MSU-IIT with a promising career ahead of them. It is no wonder that so may that have attended MSU-IIT are " In Demand " as OFW's all over the world ! paulkrps July 20th, 2008, 12:59 PM ^^just a fact, my high school friends who went straight to msu-iit ended up having up high-paying careers. TONZI July 20th, 2008, 06:51 PM Repost: Could this be true??? Here's the Japanese shipbuilding investment article as referred to by @Gors: Robotics company to put up plant in the city By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2008-07-18 A DUTCH robotics company which specializes in steel profile cutting is set to locate here in the city this year, an official of the Board of Investments (BOI) said. Gil Dureza, BOI chief, said the plant the HGG Profiling Specialist Philippines, Inc. is the first not only for the city but for the country as well. He said the company will initially invest P5 to P10 million but the investment will certainly grow when the operation goes in full swing. Dureza said the company will create a prototype of their product in a local machine shop next month while the consultants and executives of the company went back to Netherlands to procure the necessary parts and equipment for the assembly. He said HGG plans to produce 12 units of CNC controlled pipe profiling equipment every year for its Asian markets like South Korea, Thailand, and Singapore. The company might also export to Germany and Dubai from its plant in Davao City. Dureza said the operation of the company will create a ripple effect to the local economy since it will only import the microchip from Netherlands while all the rest of the components will be sub-contracted here. “We will also endorse this project to the Department of Science and Technology (because it needs their supervision),” he said. He said the company could also avail of the tax incentives under export activities. In the long run, Dureza said the HGG will also sell to a Japanese shipbuilding company which will operate in Iligan City. HGG was established in 1984 and has been focusing in the production and development of machines which combine plasma cutting with oxyfuel cutting. link (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=20900) GearX July 21st, 2008, 04:08 AM Iligan steel facility plans to prioritize downstream efforts (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=125843) By Max V. de Leon Business Mirror The country will now have to wait longer to realize its dream to have a fully-integrated steel industry as Global Steel Philippines Inc. (GSPI) opted to prioritize its plan to go into downstream operations like corrugation and Galvalume production before proceeding its $1.6-billion backward integration program Lalit Kumar Sehgal, GSPI managing director, told reporters that this strategy will ensure that its $1.6-billion future investment will not fail. “We do not want to settle with half-processing only, the end-processing should be 100-percent complete before we proceed with backward integration,” Sehgal told reporters after the opening of GSPI’s steel plate mill in the company’s Iligan plant Friday. At present, the company is producing hot-rolled coils, hot-rolled plates and cold-rolled coils (fullhard and annealed) with total annual capacity of over two million metric tons. The steel plates mill will initially produce 20,000 metric tons per month. From January to June 2008, the company’s sales increased by 27 percent to $143.7 million or 183,211 MT from only 144,000 MT and $96.5 million in the same period last year. The company, which is exporting 70 percent of its output, has ambitious plans to ramp up sales volume to over 400,000 MT for 2008. The company will complete the rehabilitation of the steel plant formerly owned by the state’s National Steel Corp. within the year with the recommissioning of its tinning line. The company announced earlier that it is putting up an integrated steel plant in the Philippines with a production capacity of 3.6 million tons per annum (TPA) of slabs. This project will generate over 35,000 job opportunities. The backward integration project envisages facilities such as blast furnace 4.0 Million TPA, Sinter plant of 4.6 Mil TPA, Coke oven battery of 1.6 Million TPA, Pig casting machine one million TPA capacity and raw material-handling system, among others. Sangram Mohanty, GSPI vice president and corporate communications head, said the company is looking at the “enabling platform” that will allow the smooth flow of its backward integration thrust. This, he said, includes sound government policies, which is why they are now meeting with various government agencies, and the steady supply of raw materials. The company, Mohanty said, is going around the country to identify possible mining sites where they could source the right grade of iron ore, dolomite and limestone. He said the company can mine on its own or partner with another company. “The steel industry has to be pampered by the government if you want to realize your dream for an integrated industry,” he said. Sehgal complained of the high cost of power that they are incurring at P4.70 per kilowatt-hour even if the plant is very near the generation facility in the area. With this, the company is now looking at putting up its own power plant or take over an existing plant. Alingatong July 21st, 2008, 04:20 AM TKC Steel plans entry into iron ore mining By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson Philippine Daily Inquirer First Posted 21:18:00 07/20/2008 MANILA, Philippines--With the outlook on steel prices mixed, listed manufacturing firm TKC Steel Corp. plans to have better control over its supply of steel by venturing into iron ore mining. "We feel this is a complementary strategy to our business. We may decide (how to go about it) in the next few weeks," TKC Steel president Anthony Dizon said following the company's stockholders' meeting last Friday. Dizon said that TKC Steel does not have any mining claims but was open to forging partnerships with mining firms. "There's iron ore all over the place. For example, does it make sense to get the iron ore from Ilocos Norte (as an example) and ship it to Iligan (in Lanao del Norte where its billet plant is located)? These are the scenarios we are developing," Dizon said. TKC Steel operates the steel billet plant in Lanao del Norte of the former National Steel Corp. TKC Steel earlier said its steel products manufacturing subsidiary in Iligan City, Treasure Steelworks Corp. (TSC), was negotiating with mining firm Vinc Vita Mining Corp. to secure its supply of iron ore from Mindanao. TSC is in talks with Vinc Vita for the rights to get iron ore, the basic raw material for TSC's blast furnace projects. Under the talks, Vinc Vita will supply up to 3 million metric tons of iron ore annually to TSC for the next five years. Philippine Daily Inquirer sources said TSC was still negotiating for two more key agreements with Vinc Vita involving extraction of the iron ore. TSC will further process the ore for use in its blast furnace and for possible export by parent firm TKC Steel. Vinc Vita has been in the mining business for the past 20 years and also has nickel operations in Agusan del Sur. TSC, on the other hand, operates the largest steel billet-making plant in the country in terms of installed capacity. Its blast furnace, which will be ready to start operations within the third quarter, will be able to produce 300,000 metric tons of iron a year. Sky-high production costs, strong demand and tight supplies have pushed global steel prices to new highs so far this year, but a correction may be on the way toward the end of this year. Global steel prices have soared by 40 percent so far in 2008 as an export tax in China has halted supplies out of the country, squeezing the world market. inquirer.net (http://business.inquirer.net/money/breakingnews/view/20080720-149630/TKC-Steel-plans-entry-into-iron-ore-mining) Alingatong July 21st, 2008, 04:25 AM DENR okays MPP of Platinum Group By MARIANNE V. GO The Philippine Star Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose L. Atienza has approved the mineral processing permit (MPP) of the Platinum Group Metals Corp. (PGMC) for its proposed ferronickel processing plant located in Manticao, Misamis Oriental. PGMC’s MPP application was filed way back in June 2006. With the approval of the MPP, PGMC’s Manticao ferro-nickel processing plant will finally be able to start operations. The Manticao plant will be processing nickel ores through calcination and smelting. The processing plant will have an average annual operating cost of $36.536 million and is designed to produce 36.7 tons per day of ferronickel (containing about 20-percent nickel). PGMC’s integrated processing and mining operations this year is expected to result in an income of $5 million, up from the $4-million income it posted in 2007. The slight growth would come from the projected export sale of 1.3 million pounds of contained nickel and 800,000 metric tons of nickel ore this year. PGMC’s $4-million income last year came solely from its nickel ore exports. PGMC’s income this year is expected to be affected by the more than 50-percent drop in nickel price from last year’s $24 per pound to the current $9.50 per pound. PGMC is just starting up the operations of its two ferronickel processing plants in Iligan, Davao and Manticao, Misamis Oriental. PGMC expects its income to “at least double” to $10 billion in 2009 once the two ferronickel processing plants are fully operational. PGMC also hopes to increase its export of contained nickel to seven million pounds by next year. PGMC had earlier announced that its mine sites in Surigao and Isabela will ship at least 450,000 metric tons of nickel ore to Australia before the end of the third quarter of this year. Atayde said that the 450,000 MT is booked, but depending on the weather, PGMC’s nickel ore exports for the whole of 2008 could reach as much as 800,000 MT. PGMC chairman Ramon R. Atayde had previously urged the DENR to encourage more investments in value added mineral processing, especially in the nickel sector. A sentiment echoed just last Friday by Berong Nickel Corp. chief executive officer George J. Bujtor at the sidelines of Atlas Consolidated Mining Corp.’s annual stockholders’ meeting at the Valle Verde Country Club in Pasig City. Both Atayde and Bujtor cited the downturn in the nickel industry and the shift away from raw laterite ore to more value-added nickel. According to Atayde, several small local nickel mining firms have stopped operations due to the drop in global prices for nickel ore. Nickel ore prices, Atayde said, have dropped to $9.50 a pound this year from last year’s high of $24/lb. This is partly due, Atayde explained, to the loss of the Chinese market which had previously been a major buyer of low-grade nickel ore. Bujtor confirmed Atayde’s observation that the nickel industry must move to more value-added processing instead of just relying on the export of unprocessed laterite ore. He pointed out that China, which is the major buyer of laterite ore, is adopting new furnaces that requires moving away from low grade ore. The disappearance of the Chinese market, Bujtor said has already hurt a lot of small Philippine nickel mining companies. abs-cbnnews.com (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=125838) GearX July 21st, 2008, 05:34 AM http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3009/2585974565_95ab86b4b5.jpg?v=0 Alingatong July 21st, 2008, 05:37 AM ^^Comment ko lang: Bakit kulay green yong inilagay na roofing dyan sa may viewing deck? Ramos Global Steel Philippines Inc. is seeking more support from the government by way of lower power rates to push through with its proposed $1.6-billion integrated steel plant project in the country. Lalit Kumar Sehgal, managing director of Global Steel, told reporters during the inauguration of its re-opened steel plate mill in the company’s manufacturing complex in Iligan City over the weekend that “government policy must pamper foreign investments.” “Whenever a company puts up an integrated steel facility, government must also do its part. We are looking at the power rates and supply as well as the long-term policies of the country,” added Sehgal. Sangram Mohanty, vice president for corporate communications, said it was all about government putting in place “an enabling platform to make our planned investments a reality.” He said the company had been in constant talks with the Board of Investments and the Environment Department to see “how we can all work together.” Sehgal also said in meetings with the investments board, the company identified the various “problematic” areas of concern to the company. He cited that the company pays over P50 million in its monthly electric bill. He said the company was seeking preferential rates being one of the biggest power users in Mindanao. www.manilastandardtoday.com (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=business4_july21_2008) Alingatong July 21st, 2008, 10:25 AM SEN. (GSPI) will target other countries in the region for steel plate exports after opening its plate mill facilities in Iligan city. GSPI Vice-President Sangram Mohanty told reporters last week the company wanted to export to Vietnam, Korea, Indonesia and India before the year ends. The four countries import more than 700,000 metric tons of flat steel yearly, the company said. "It remains an exciting time for the plate manufacturers globally," Mr. Mohanty said, adding that the launch of the plate mill was in line with company strategy to rehabilitate the National Steel Corp. "The plate mill is part of the company’s dream to build an integrated steel plant," he added. Last year, Global Steel announced a plan to set up a $1.6-billion integrated steel plant that will make the Philippines independent as far as steel is concerned. The company said the country imports more than 72,000 metric tons per year of commercial-grade steel plates from China, Russia and the Ukraine. It gets high-tensile special-grade plates from Japan, Korea and Europe. Global Steel plans to produce 20,000 metric tons of plates per month and ramp up production gradually. "The company’s entry into the plate market is advantageous to consumers since this would benefit them in terms of competitive pricing, savings on freight cost and technical service without compromising quality," it said in a statement. Steel plates are used in construction equipment, shipping and drilling platforms, pipelines, tunnel supports, and excavator shovels. Mr. Mohanty did not say whether the company had increased steel prices, saying only that their price is cheaper. Global steel prices have gone up, affecting mostly property developers. According to UK-based MEPS International Ltd., an independent supplier of steel market information, steel prices as of April stood at $1,065 per metric ton compared with $788 a month earlier. Aside from the plate mill, the company is also launching its tinning line by yearend. The tinning line will produce tin plates used for soft drink caps. The company also said it would venture into mining and power to look for potential iron ores that will make the integrated steel plant a reality. Global Steel is the country’s largest steel manufacturer that exports 70% of its production. Its parent company, Global Steel Holdings Limited, has more than 14 million tons of steel production capacity per year. — KJRL cant_tnac July 22nd, 2008, 06:18 AM Ganda naman ng Club Zinc....hmmmm..i and my comrades planned to chill there this saturday...hhehe cant_tnac July 22nd, 2008, 06:27 AM A really Wow Iligan....New Club, new fastfood chain, new buildings, new shopping arcades...else? g0Rs July 22nd, 2008, 11:56 AM YOUTH CENTER TUKURON SA SK FEDERATION, INABAGAN SA GERMAN EMBASSY 07/22/08 Gihan-ay na karon sa Sangguniang Kabataan Federation ubos sa pagpangulo ni Konsehal Erika Rae Macapayag-Cruz ang mga papeles alang sa katukuran sa Formal Youth Center sa siyudad. Boniao said DTI-Iligan has been supporting the government's drive to switch to compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) from the less energy-efficient incandescent bulbs. "We monitor and inspect establishments with incandescent bulbs. We make them aware of the 'Switch Movement'," she said. The Switch Movement is a social mobilization campaign by the Department of Energy (DOE) that aims to accelerate the adoption of best energy practices in order to address energy security and climate change. One key strategy of the movement is the switch from incandescent bulbs to the more energy-efficient CFLs that will generate energy savings for consumers, defer installation of additional power generation capacity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Boniao stressed that the program also calls for the switch from petroleum-based fuels to alternative fuels, the switch from kerosene to renewable energy sources in remote rural areas, the switch from fuel-based technologies to renewable energy technologies in power generation and the switch from vestiges of centralized energy planning to more participative planning at the local level. "It intends to demonstrate how we Filipinos can contribute substantively to the massive effort needed to address the dire consequences of skyrocketing oil prices and climate change through simple changes in our lifestyle, behavior, attitudes and standard practices," she added. Meanwhile, DTI-Iligan reminds all buyers to purchase only lights with the PS (Philippine Standard) Mark for the locally manufactured products and the ICC (Import Commodity Clearance) Mark for imported products. PAL used to operate a daily flight from Cebu that left at 6:30 am, arrived Baloi 7:15 am then proceeded to malabang and cotabato. then it would reverse the route and leave baloi for cebu at 12:20 pm. I would suggest that the incoming flight from cebu should arrive around 11- 12 to give enough time for the fog to lift. You have breakfast in Cebu and be home for lunch in iligan. (PGMC), said Wednesday it would export P25.2 billion worth of ferronickel in five years starting 2009. The company expects to start commercial operations of its P2-billion ferronickel smelting projects early next year. These are located in Manticao, Misamis Oriental; Iligan City and Danao City in Cebu province. It estimates to produce 1.61 million pounds of ferronickel worth P718.93 million in its first year of operations; 11.44 million pounds valued P5.37 billion in the second year; and 13.71 million pounds worth P6.38 billion in the third to fifth years. MCCI earlier obtained fiscal incentives from the Board of Investments for its smelting projects. The incentives included a six-year income tax holiday and zero duty on capital equipment importation, among others. MCCI said it intends to hire about 1,500 workers including those for its ore tendering activities in the said plant sites. Prior to the start of its commercial operations, the company have to comply with administrative requirements such as the increase in its capital to P499 million, acquisition of smelter equipment from PGMC to fully integrate all assets, as well as operational, environmental protection and management systems upgrading and testing. Its smelter plant in Manticao was recently granted a mineral processing permit (MPP) by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, allowing it to produce 11,000 metric tons of ferronickel annually for five years. PGMC is the only integrated mining and ferronickel company in the country with assets worth P3 billion. Gatdula Friday, July 25, 2008 The Mindanao Operation and Maintenance (O&M) Group of the National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) has received the prestigious Integrated Management System (IMS) certificate from German audit firm TÜV Group. TransCo said it was able to bag the certificate after hurdling the independent audit conducted by the international certifying group. Masanori Matsuda, managing director of TÜV SÜD PSB Phil. Inc., said the IMS certification would help TransCo maintain existing quality processes and productivity standards. The certification also affirms TransCo Mindanao’s compliance with international standards on quality management (ISO 9001:2000), environmental management (ISO 14001:2004) and occupational health and safety (OHSAS 18001:1999). TransCo president Arthur N. Aguilar said the IMS certification is a “testament to TransCo’s commitment to be globally-competitive and continuously improve our processes so we can better serve the people of Mindanao even as we face many great challenges in the region.” The IMS certification audit involved the assessment of 47 TransCo facilities in Mindanao including the regional office in Iligan City, six district offices, two power system maintenance departments, 12 branch offices and 21 substations. TransCo’s Mindanao O&M Group also operates and maintains the network of around 5,548 circuit-kilometers of transmission lines all over Mindanao. Its customers include 32 electric distribution utilities and 25 directly-connected industries. In August 2005, Mindanao O&M received the ISO 9001:2000 certification for quality management system (QMS) as part of its efforts to continuously improve processes in the workplace. Four other TransCo units have been IMS-certified, namely, North Luzon O&M in April 2006, Visayas O&M in February 2007, Project Management in November 2007 and System Operations in May 2008. Ü para bold! at last! something to look forward to in iligan, another great reason to come home! dugay na gyud ko naghulat anang gmall, unta madayon na gyud open sa july29! re: the 4 new call centers, if madayon man gyud, i think the new gaisano mall would be the most practical location, that's IF the mall's occupancy would still leave them some space. A new ICT park would be great but that has to come later on when the leverage for ICT in iligan would prove the city as a promising venue for the industry! Even here in manila, many call centers are located inside shopping malls, the same is true with bacolod and iloilo! I think only cebu has a full-pledged IT park in the country. Im not 100% sure though! Just my observation when i went to these places.. anyways, this is a good start for iligan.. More to come! A press release Thursday of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) cited this data in saying that these first quarter investment commitments were made by 12 companies, whose planned projects are expected to generate 2,000 new jobs. MEDCo chairman Unsec. Virgilio L. Leyretana projected that Mindanao will surpass the P7.227 billion committed in 2007, with power generation and business process outsourcing investments taking the lead this year. Investing in Mindanao’s power sector are the Aboitiz Power Corp. which plans to build four hydroelectric plants in the Davao Region, and Alcantara-controlled Conal Holdings which is setting up a $450-million 200-megawatt coal-fired plant in Maasim, Sarangani. Philippine Sinter Corp. plans to invest P1.03 billion for power generation at the Philippine Veterans Investment Development Corp. Industrial Estate in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental. In Iligan City, Pilmico Foods, an animal feed producer, plans to start its P660-million investment. Another big investment was the P139.38 million housing project of Liberty Land Corp., which is expanding its mass housing project in Cagayan de Oro City. Bioenergy 8 Corp. has also started the predevelopment stage of its first bio-diesel production facility in Sasa, Davao City. Nanoscript Inc., a medical transcription company that is conducting training under the MTC Academy umbrella, has started operating here. Other investors included the Bongreen Corp., Far East Seafood Inc., and International Pipe Industries Corp. in Northern Mindanao; Mommy Gina Tuna Resources Inc. in Central Mindanao; the Caraga Oil Refining Inc. and the Krominco Inc. in the Caraga Region; and the Pacifica Agro-Industrial Corp., which will operate in Western and Central Mindanao. — BusinessWorld GMA News.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/109269/P31-B-investments-committed-to-Mindanao-in-Q1) Alingatong July 25th, 2008, 02:03 PM Katatapos lang po ng fireworks display ng McDo. A statement on the Japanese embassy website Friday night said the turnover ceremonies led by Japanese embassy economic section first secretary Shinichi Kakui were held last Thursday. Before the annex was built, some students and teachers at the high school had to hold classes in the village gymnasium. "Being a public place, they had to suffer from distractions due to public activities that coincided with the class sessions. Moreover, the assessment of the City's Engineer's Office and City Fire Department found the building to be inappropriate and therefore posed danger to human lives. So the School's transfer was immediately recommended. Now with the Project, they could enjoy a more conducive and safer learning environment," the embassy said. The project also boosted the School Development Plan, which seeks to provide safe and adequate school facilities to make the school a leading educational institution for the whole region. In his message, Kakui said he was "deeply honored" to take part in the turnover. "As we all know, the Education Sector in the Philippines still faces many challenges such as the lack of classrooms and the shortage of teachers, especially in the rural areas. I was informed that your students used to gather in makeshift classrooms inside the Barangay (village) Gymnasium, despite that the building was declared banned by the Offices of the City Engineer and City Fire Department. I can only imagine how difficult those times were for the students, the teachers and even the parents," he said. - GMANews.TV qwert_guy July 26th, 2008, 04:31 AM http://www.skyscrapercity.com/customavatars/avatar124875_34.gif wala akong info sa McDo promo but uso ngayon yung buy 1 take 1 na hamburger... ano pala yang sexy sa inside mo miss gearX? Trade and Industry Undersecretary and Board of Investments managing head Elmer C. Hernandez said this after making a side trip to the TKC plant during the recent inauguration of the plate mill operation of Global Steel Philippines (SPV-AMC) Inc. in Iligan. "I’ve seen the new equipment and facility when I visited the site," Hernandez said. This new unit of TKC is being constructed adjacent to the billet shop, which its sister company Treasure Steelworks Corp. is currently leasing from GSPI in Iligan and is now producing billets. The company, which had already applied for registration with the BoI but withdrew it later, is expected to refile its application. Hernandez said the project may be entitled to pioneer incentives considering that the technology is considered new as there is no commercial operation of this kind yet in the country. Pig iron is a primary steel product serving as the raw material for the manufacture of long products such as billets. As such Treasure Steel would then have a ready source for its billet shop. Long products include PVC pipes, nails, among others According to Hernandez, the company is also in the midst of construction and the installation of equipment imported from China. An estimated P300 million to P400 million in capital have been poured already into the project. Hernandez said the company would utilize local supplies of iron laterite to be processed in the beneficiation plant to come up with beneficiated iron or iron concentrate iron, which in turn becomes the raw material for the blast furnace to produce pig iron, a primary steel product. TKC plant has also a ready stockpile of magnetite iron, another raw material for the production of basic iron, in lumps in its facility. Both products are locally available although the laterite iron deposits in the country are of low grade thus it failed to attract miners in the past because of its viability issue but the prevailing high cost of metals has made investments in the laterite ore extraction a viable proposition. Already, TKC was also negotiating with mining firm Vinc Vita Mining Corp. to secure its supply of iron ore from Mindanao for as much as 3 million tons of laterite iron for the next five years. Vinc Vita has been in the mining business for the past 20 years and also has nickel operations in Agusan del Sur. The company was also negotiating for additional supply of iron ore from small producers in Mindanao. Hernandez could not ascertain the production capacity of the TKC plant but said the company plans to export 50 percent of the beneficiated iron while the remaining 50 percent for its blast furnace for the pig iron production. "What is important is even if this is a small scale, our dream to have an integrated steel operation is somehow becoming a reality," Hernandez said. "Somehow, we have a smaller version of an integrated steel industry and this is good because this would eventually lower our cost of steel by making use of our own iron ores," he stressed. The Philippines is a net importer of steel so it is open to the vagaries of the world market, Hernandez said. Prices of steel products have gone up 40 percent because China has stopped production squeezing global supplies. Hernandez further noted that TKC’s production of long steel products would not compete with the plan of GSPI to go into backward operation, which is the production of slabs, another basic steel product. GSPI is producing hot-rolled coils, cold-rolled coils and steel plate or flat products from slabs. At present, there are only three producers of billets Treasure Steel, SKK and the Bacnotan Steel, which is still under rehabilitation. TKC was also able to a power supply contract with the National Power Corp. at rates lower than the GSPI’s making its operation more viable.(BCM) Manila Bulletin Online (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080728130910.html) shaKEIRa July 27th, 2008, 10:24 PM gi tulis ko bago lang gyud... twice na ni nahitabo sa ako diri... ka lagot... gatulay July 28th, 2008, 12:07 AM I am managing a website www.exploreiligan.com please have your visit.. i also need contributors.. www.exploreiligan.com It's good to hear that there is another website about iligan. Elmer Hernandez, BOI chief, said Ben Tiu, owner of Treasure Steelworks Corp., will invest P1 billion in a blast furnace and a beneficiation plant in Iligan City. It will operate commercially by October. Hernandez, who recently made an ocular inspection of the facility and the new equipment installed at the plant, said TSC is set to refile its earlier application for registration with the BOI for the purpose of securing incentives. Based on his assessment, TSC would qualify for pioneer status. "While this is small scale, what is important is we now have our own version of an integrated steel mill. Our dream to have an integrated steel operation is somehow becoming real," Hernandez said. He said with this, the Philippines will lessen its importation of raw materials in the production of steel. Hernandez said the firm will engage in the production of pig iron, a basic iron, from blast furnace to be fed from magnetite iron, a high-grade ore which we have plenty of especially in La Union, as well as laterite iron from small producers in Mindanao. Its beneficiation plant would process iron laterite, a low grade iron which has become viable to use because of the high cost of metal. Pig iron is the raw material for the production of billets where long steel products are derived from. The pig iron would feed on the billet making facilities of TSC which it currently leases from Global Steel Philippines Inc. (GSPI) TSC last year reopened and modernized the billet shop. Hernandez said this operation would not compete with the production of GSPI which is engaged in slabs, also a primary steel product from where flat products are made. Based on TSC's plan, Hernandez said 50 percent of beneficiated iron ore would be exported and 50 percent would be fed for the blast furnace. TSC has so far spent P300 million to P400 million for the new facility including the acquisition of machinery and equipment from China. The plan is to put up two blast furnaces, using Chinese technology in the production process. Previous reports said TSC plans to produce up to 300,000 metric tons annually of iron from this operation. Hernandez said mining firm Vinc Vita Mining Corp. is one of the suppliers of iron ore from Mindanao . Earlier reports said Vinc Vita will supply up to 3 million metric tons of iron ore every year. Apart from TSC, other billet manufacturers include SKK and the soon-to-be rehabilitated Bacnotan. http://www.malaya.com.ph (http://www.malaya.com.ph/jul28/busi1.htm) Alingatong July 28th, 2008, 11:23 AM http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/jeannette/old_mayors/flag-above%20view%202.jpg World’s Second Largest Flag unfurled in Iligan Recently, the Philippine Flag (the size of a football field) touted as the world’s second largest was unfurled at the football area of Global Steel, Iligan. Under the present unitary system (a remnant of our colonial past imposed by the Spaniards and the Americans to advance their colonial imperial interests), practically all powers are vested in a highly centralized government. “The concentration of power at the top inevitably results in political and economic imbalance and injustice. It is the reason why many regions in the Philippines remain poor and underdeveloped. Poverty in turn spawned widespread criminality, rebellion and secession, especially in neglected areas in Mindanao and many parts of Luzon and the Visayas.” Unsa may tan-aw nimo ini, Dro? The City Health Office (CHO) of Iligan has intensified its barangay-to-barangay campaign using the Information, Education & Communication materials to prevent the onset of Dengue Fever cases in our City, said Evan Lagura, officer-in-charge on Environmental Health and Sanitation of the Iligan City Health Office. Lagura said, 'we encourage community participation in the application of the 4S on Dengue Prevention of the Department of Health (DOH)' which explains: Firstly, the 'Search and Destroy' which looks for the possible breeding places of the Aedes Egypti and Albufictus mosquitoes, like that in stagnant canals, water containers without cover, used tires, flower vases, and these indoor and outdoor mosquitoes shall be destroyed. 'Self Protection Measures' require children and adults to wear long sleeves when exposed to places/areas with mosquitoes, or putting up of screen to windows and doors to prevent mosquitoes from entering, and applying anti-mosquito off-lotion. Thirdly, 'Seek Early Consultation', which requires immediate medical check-up to proper authorities by having symptoms that manifest dengue- 2 to 3 days fever and nose bleeding. Lastly, 'Say No to Indiscriminate Fogging'; this is costly and not effective solution to kill mosquitoes because it can only kill adult mosquito but not the larvae. Our larvae survey on mosquitoes is continuing, all throughout the year, we visited barangays with swampy areas and early month of June before the regular classes start, we conducted inspection to schools and impart to school administrators the 4S, Lagura meted out. The long and lasting solution to prevent the spread of these mosquitoes which cause dengue fever out of their bites to the person's body parts is of course everybody's concern on 'environmental health and sanitation', Lagura disclosed. Pacasum, port collector of customs, Bureau of Customs, Sub-port of Iligan, this City, revealed that they overshoot a collection of P33.403.110million versus its target of P24.290million for the month of July 2008. Despite economic situation on the price movement of fuel and basic commodities, we were able to surmount our collection beyond its target. Said amount we collected is from July 1 to 21, 2008 yet, and hopefully it still increases as we collect customs' duties and taxes from the industries- the PILMICO FOODS Corporation, Petronas Energy Phils.,Inc., Global Steel Phils., Inc., Iligan Cement Corporation, and Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation, Pacasum said. PILMICO, the outstanding payor, takes its lead in our collection ever since, and it received commendation from the Bureau of Customs Port District of Cagayan de Oro, a Plaque of Recognition as one of the Top 4 Awardees in paying its duties, said Pacasum. The firm which primarily engaged in the manufacture of wheat flour and its related products, specialty products, feeds and feed ingredients, yeast, powdered sugar and baking power, is located in Barangay Kiwalan, this city. For 2008 annual target of P287million, we already collected 37.81 percent amounting P220.814.627million from January 2008 to July 21, 2008. We are extremely happy of what we achieved at this moment, and that we look forward to other industries to increase their payments, said Pacasum.
