Three groups eye Iligan plant

THREE INVESTOR GROUPS are eyeing the 114-megawatt (MW) Iligan I & II Diesel Power Plant (IDPP) complex, the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM) said in a statement yesterday.

The three interested parties, which have all completed the preliminary requirements for the bidding, attended the pre-bid conference that PSALM held in its office in Makati City last week.

PSALM stressed the importance of this particular auction, especially for Mindanao, which is experiencing tightening power supply.

The three bidders, all local entities, are currently conducting their due diligence to assess and appraise the Mindanao-based power asset. The auction for the plant is set on October 15.

PSALM spokesman Conrad Tolentino said that the approximate value of the plant will not be far from the P1 million per megawatt rate of a diesel plant.

But he added that "the value of the plant will still be dependent on the evaluation throughout the bidding process."

Situated in the locality of Mapalad, Dalipuga in Iligan City, approximately 74 kilometers southwest of Cagayan de Oro, the IDPP 1&2 complex runs on either bunker and diesel fuel type for its operations.

Both units were commissioned in 1993. — AKKA

Iligan holds silver jubilee retreat

ILIGAN CITY, August 8, 2008─The Diocese of Iligan held its Silver Jubilee Retreat to further strengthen the congregation’s spiritual life and grow in holiness according to the tenets of Basic Ecclesial Community.

More than 400 participants have registered for the three-day Silver Jubilee Retreat which began August 6 at the Redemptorist Shrine, Tibanga District, this city. The theme was “Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) Spirituality and Way of being Church.

In an interview with CBCPNews, Iligan Bishop Elenito De Los Reyes Galido said the affair was part of their one year Silver Jubilee celebration which began November last year.

The prelate said the retreat was an opportunity for the clergy, religious men and women and lay people to discern concerns and issues on how to work together to enhance and strengthen the Basic Ecclesial Community (BEC) in their local church.

“This is our opportunity to understand the great call of Gagmayng Simbahanong Katilingban (Basic Ecclesial Community) to understand what the community is especially if we base it to the community of God,” Galido stressed.

The participants included all members of the clergy, religious men and women, diocesan representatives from mandated organizations and movements, and 10 representatives from each parish composed of the Parish Pastoral Council President, BEC Coordinator, Liturgical Ministers’ Coordinator, Youth Coordinator, Bible Apostolate Coordinator, FLA Coordinator, Social Action Coordinator, Parish Fiscal and Catechists Coordinators.

Officially opened with a concelebrated mass at 5:30 pm led by Iligan Vicar General Msgr. Jemar L. Vera Cruz at the Redemptorist Shrine, the retreat had Manila Archbishop Gaudencio B. Cardinal Rosales as keynote speaker.

Rosales explained the loving role of the Holy Trinity as a community to strengthen the Basic Ecclesial Community and the consolidated mission of BEC together with the core values of family.

The first workshop held morning of August 7 had the participants discussed the different challenges they face as they pursue their mission in BEC for evangelization and family renewal.

Rosales asked the participants to compose their own prayer as a result of their discernment.

The afternoon sessions took a different turn when all delegates grouped together to thoroughly discuss their ideas on how to enhance and strengthen the BEC in the parishes in the light of the loving community of the Holy Trinity.

It had been observed that the delegates had a wonderful time during the reflection activity, accompanied by lively and encouraging discussions.

In a separate interview the Cardinal said his talk centered on the love of God because God’s love is the center of all communities.

“This love is communal just as God is a community of the Father, Son and the Holy Spirit that we call “Trinidad” and our mission is to continue and renew the love of God,” Rosales said. (Wendell Talibong)

Flour prices down in Iligan last month
08/09/2008 | 05:24 AM

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — The Lanao del Norte provincial office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) noted that prevailing prices of hard flour for June and July ranged from P900 - P915 per bag, down from P925 - P939 in the preceding two months.

Soft flour prices also decreased to a range of P805-P815 per bag from a range of P830-P840 in April and May.

Soft flour is generally used for baking cakes and pastries, while hard flour is used for various types of bread.

The DTI regional office attributed the price reduction to stabilized supply and demand. But there is no assurance that flour prices in Iligan and in other parts of Northern Mindanao would not increase in the near term, following price patterns in Luzon and the Visayas, officials added.

Flour is manufactured from imported wheat whose prices in the world market have been increasing lately. Aboitiz Group’s Pilmico Foods Corp., located in Iligan City, is the major distributor of flour in key southern cities especially in Mindanao. The company’s brands are Sun Moon Star, Sunshine, Glowing Sun, Kutitap, Megastar, Gold Star and Wooden Spoon. — G. P. Alba, BusinessWorld

Global Steel Phils starts production of steel plates (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Business&p=49&type=2&sec=27&aid=2008080854)
Saturday, August 9, 2008

Global Steel Philippines, Inc. has started production of steel plates with the recent commissioning of its plate mill in Iligan.

Interviewed at the sidelines of the three-day conference on Sustaining Mining Exploration and Investments at the Crown Plaza Galleria, company vice president for corporate communications Sangram Mohanty said Global Steel is targeting a production of 20,000 metric tons a month of steel plates, both for the domestic sector and for export to other Southeast Asian markets.

At the same time, Mohanty confirmed Global Steel’s continuing interest to invest in the local mining sector to complement its existing steel manufacturing activities.

He said “we are looking at all mines” and have not seriously sat down with any specific group. “We are not sure of the availability of iron ore because it has not really been mapped.”

Aside from Global Steel, a lot of other Indian investors have their sights set on the Philippines.

According to Dr. Ahmed S. Firoz, former chief economist of India’s Ministry of Steel, several Indian companies are looking for iron ore sources outside India.

Environment and Natural Resources Secretary Jose L. Atienza had previously told reporters that the Mittal Group, which controls Global Steel, may invest an additional P4 billion to P5 billion in the Philippines. The group has expressed interest to go into mining, specifically iron ore, to support its steel milling operation in Iligan and to fully integrate its existing steel manufacturing operation in the country.

The Mittal Group’s Ispat  acquired the former National Steel Corp. (NSC) in 2004 then renamed it to Global Steel Philippines. — Marianne Go

PAL to offer flights to and from Iligan
08/11/2008 | 02:14 AM

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Philippine Airlines (PAL) will operate the Manila-Iligan and Cebu-Iligan routes next month through 76-seater planes under low-cost brand PAL Express.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz said last week PAL would again be active at the nearby Baloi Airport, with flights tentatively scheduled to start on Sept. 27.

Domingo Duerme, PAL senior assistant vice-president for Mindanao sales, said the airline would fly up to four times a week from Iligan City to Manila. The Cebu-Iligan route will have three flights weekly. A 50-seater Bombardier Quiet (Q300) jet propeller will fly the Cebu-Iligan route, while a Q400 will operate in the Manila-Iligan route. At present, passengers going to Manila and Cebu have to come in this city first.

Mindanao provinces and cities west of this city, including Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur and Marawi City, make up a significant market not only for airline but also for shipping companies.

Most ferries from Northern Mindanao, including this city’s port, going to Cebu and Manila pass by the port of Iligan to pick up passengers from northwestern provinces of Mindanao.

Iligan City has been served for years by the Maria Cristina Airport, but PAL stopped flights of its less-efficient Fokker and Sunriser planes due to increasing costs and low passenger and cargo traffic.

Iligan is among the most important ports of Mindanao, hosting at least a dozen large manufacturing plants. The city has a population close to 400,000 people. — Geefe P. Alba, BusinessWorld

Iligan City willing to forego P1 B in taxes from steel firm (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080811132187.html)

Bernie Cahiles-Magkilat

The local government of Iligan City is willing to forego half of the P2 billion taxes due from Global Steel International Inc., which has piled up since 1999 as ownership of the sprawling properties of the formerly National Steel Corp. has yet to be settled.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz told reporters at the recent inauguration of GSII steel plate operation the transfer of ownership to the Indian-owned operator has yet to be settled.

"The company owes us P2 billion in real estate tax arrears including penalties since 1999 when it closed operations," Cruz said.

"Penalty and interests partially will be waived but we will not condone the basic tax. This means, there is about half of the amount due us," Cruz said.

Cruz said that some companies owe the city real estate taxes but the biggest debtor is the city’s steel firm.

The tax arrears of NSC covered the period 1999 to 2004 in the amount of P177 million, more or less.

This was the result of a settlement between the City of Iligan and that of National Steel Corp.-liquidator, wherein the relief included waiver or reduction of interests and penalties and allowing payment in installments.

"The tax liability we are referring to pertains to National Steel Corp. and not that of Global Steel Philippines," he said.

Lalit Sehgal, GSII president said, he tried to settle their tax liabilities with the City government but said, he was told, "You don’t have an account with us."

NSC, which used to be owned by the government’s National Development, went bankrupt and closed operations in 1999.

It reopened in 2004 under after Global Infrastructure Holdings Ltd. of India ’s Ispat Group won a bidding for its tender offer of P13.255 billion payable over an eight year period to various local banks led by the Philippine National Bank.

Cruz explained the tax liabilities starting 2004 onwards should be the responsibility of GSII while the taxes due for the period 2003 to 1999 should be NSC’s or under NSC liquidator.

However, Cruz said that until now less than 10 percent of the total properties of NSC had been transferred to GSII and 90 percent is still under NSC.

Before it closed in 1999, the NSC was paying almost P1 billion in taxes every year to the national government and an additional P200 million in real estate taxes to Iligan City .

With its reopening, the company was expected to contribute around P4 billion to the country’s gross domestic product.

Flourish: IPAG’s 31st Season enters

The Iligan City-based Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), acknowledged a leading region-based theatre in the country, highlights its 31st Season with landmark productions in and out of its base at the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology.

Ranaw: Isang Alamat, a winner in the playwriting contest of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, premieres in September celebrating the Ruby Jubilees of the CCP and the MSU-IIT. This dance-music play about epic hero Bato Lakungan presents our pre-colonial tribes in turmoil, a condition that prophesies our fragmented state today.

IPAG’s long-running Tales From Mindanao is on its 1st leg this season of a national tour of Manila schools which road shows shall run until March next year. In the last 17 years, Tales has played to full houses captivating large audiences here and in over a hundred cities worldwide. This leg includes performances at the Crossroads Theatre, Xavier School, La Salle Zobel, Southville, and the University of Asia and the Pacific. It hits Davao and Cagayan de Oro Cities next.

Celebrating the National Arts Month in February 2009, Pop and Poetry transcreates and popularizes the poems of Southern Philippine writers using the pop mediums of dance and music. Included are the works of Christine Godinez-Ortega, Ralph Galan, Henry Opulencia, Anthony Tan, German Gervacio, and Marge Evasco. 'Origami,' a transcreation of the eponymous Marjorie Evasco poem, previewed at the opening of the 15th Iligan National Writers Workshop last May 26.

Ranaw goes onstage starting Sept. 12 until the 20th (three shows: 10:00 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.) at the MSU-IIT Mini-Theatre, Iligan City. Steven P.C. Fernandez directs from his script and original music. Choreography is by Melvin Pascubillo and Leilani M. Fernandez.

Other on-the-road productions Tatlo sa Isa, MingMing, and Bak2Bak will continue performing here and abroad this season. Tales is also set for performances in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in October 2 before flying to the U.S. for a series of shows until November.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts, MSU-IIT, Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corporation, and Super Ferry supports the IPAG season.

Iligan City unfurls biggest Philippine flag to unite Muslims, Christians

Tuesday, August 12, 2008 11:23 AM

ILIGAN CITY -- Local government officials and a Christian visionary unfurled this morning the biggest Philippine Flag in an effort to unite the Christians and Muslims here as firefight in North Cotabato province escalates and the controversy over the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain (MOA-AD) rages.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz, together with Grace Galindez-Gupana, a Christian visionary who holds two Guinness World Records in making the largest flag in the world, unfurled a Philippine flag, measuring at least two hectares in size, at the oval of the Iligan City National High School and witnessed by a large crowd of Christians and Muslim residents here.

"The Philippine flag is the symbol of unity of all Filipinos" the mayor said.

"The flag is not only a symbol of unity but it is the banner of the Triune God," Gupana said.

Last week, the flag was also unfurled in Pagadian City and Marawi City. -- Lino de la Cruz

WOW. Great! I was not expecting their return to RPMI. Its not even on the initial list of proposed destinations I've seen last March. Perhaps other surprise destinations will come along the way. RPMP and RPMC are on the list but were not yet serve. RPMP is understandable as they were having runway upgrading and re-pavement. So maybe when its done Asian Spirit and Pal Express would be there.

Previously, a Shorts 360-300 from Cebu, typically called [Sunriser] crashed while on approach on that airport in 1987. I think it was in December on that year killing all 15 passengers and crew. Caused of crash was attributed to the weather (low cloud ceiling) and the plane was approaching runway 02 for final when it bumped into the mountain southwest of Iligan. SOP for VFR approach requires victor from Buruun to Baloi and circle counterclockwise downwind, I think Buruun is where National Steel is located but I'm not so sure if its correct. Anyway, finding Buruun was easy but the airport proved difficult. It was raining very hard on that fatal day. The pilot managed to see the airport through break in the clouds and when he initialed approach he bumped into the mountain instead.

RPMI is like flying to Baguio on Bad weather. Its very dangerous. The reason for that is the terrain and the altitude where the airport lies. It sits on a plateau bordering Lanao del Sur. Currently, landing is restricted to fair weather operations only so my advice refrain from taking it on bad weather. Anyway I don't think airlines would be flying with that risk especially the history it has. Earliest recorded fatal crashes on that area was in 1964 followed by 1970 crash of F-27 and the 3rd one is the SD 360.

any news on malabang (rpmm)?

i took cebu- iligan shorts flight 1 week after that december crash. the weather that day was perfect. I enjoyed the slow approach to baloi and marvelling at all the sights along the coast.

i took my first flight to manila from iligan HS- 748 to mactan, then a B727 from mactan to manila. I was 10 yrs old then. enjoyed the time when those HS-748s and YS-11s would fly over our house everyday.

The airport near Iligan has been somewhat of a mystery to me as to why it has been dormant. I have heard that because of Fog and other related weather conditions it is not the easiest or best place for planes to land there. With flights due to resume there, I wonder if ILS and Radar have been installed to make the airport more friendly to pilots of commercial aircraft?

Can anyone fill me in with more background on this airport ? It would certainly seem more convienient than landing in CDO and then going to Iligan from there. It would also expdite the delivery of Air Frieght and other non-passenger goods to Iligan.

Its big enough to accommodate the biggest turboprop but too small to serve a passenger jet. DHQ4 service to MNL is a good service already rather than going on the opposite side of the mountain in CGY.

http://www.airport-int.com/images/companies/333/navigational-aids-4b.jpg

The airports with ILS facilities in MIndanao are Davao, Gensan, Cagayan De Oro and Zamboanga. The next in line airport to be installed with ILS are Butuan, Cotabato and Dipolog airports only, in the exact order. The Instrument Landing System ("ILS") composed of a localizer, glideslope and distance measuring equipment cost approximately $480,000 (US) or around 22 million pesos each. Only Cebu and Davao have 2 ILS approach CAT ll while Manila and Clark has CAT lll.

Baloi airport will never become an ideal site because of the terrain and approach concerns. I remember a proposal in the mid 80's of making a new one in the Linamon area but due to lack of advocacy by mr. Cabili, it never materialized.

Malabang's airport is ideal due to the proximity to the coast. Its airport is very historic, having been used by the US army air corps in WWII during its campaign in the Cotabato-Davao corridor.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — SM City Cagayan de Oro is unfazed by increasing local competition from the Gaisano Super City Mall, which is opening in nearby Iligan City.

"We noticed that foot traffic decreased [when Gaisano Iligan opened], but we were not greatly affected based on our sales," said SM Mall Manager Bienvenido Paul C. Ferrer III.

He said visiting the shopping mall here would be an out-of-town trip for residents of Iligan City, which is at least an hour and a half drive away.

"More private vehicles coming from the neighboring cities are still occupying our car parks," Mr. Ferrer said.

Traders here earlier projected that the opening of the Gaisanos’ newest shopping mall in Iligan City would have an impact on SM Cagayan de Oro’s business.

This is because a number of SM shoppers come from Iligan City and the Lanao provinces.

The bulk of the city’s crowd go to the nearby Limketkai and Gaisano Cagayan de Oro shopping complexes in Lapasan district, which is fast developing into this city’s new central business district, replacing the old Divisoria area.

Limketkai had a major make-over two years ago and remains this city’s top shopping destination, local retailers claimed.

Iligan residents and visitors crowded the city’s Gaisano Super City Mall two weeks ago when it partially opened two floors of its four-storey building.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz and city officials welcomed Neopace Corp., operator of Gaisano Iligan, which also operates the Gaisanos’ shopping center.

The first branch of McDonald’s in Iligan also opened at the new Gaisano mall. Shops outside of the Gaisano department store and supermarket have yet to open.

Some Iligan residents, however, fear that the city’s newest mall would be a security threat since it could attract attacks by rebel groups.

"We were told not to go to the Gaisano Mall because the military is now on red alert and we must be cautious in going to crowded places," said Jane M. Villamor, an Iligan resident.

SM’s Mr. Ferrer said they would continue to strengthen SM City Cagayan de Oro by selling more national brands.

"We’re expecting to have new shops here by October in time for the Christmas season," he said, adding that they would build an escalator leading to the car park so the public would not have to go around to enter the mall.

Mr. Ferrer said most of their customers own vehicles. — Geefe P. Alba, BusinessWorld

Global Steel set to book profits for the first time

Global Steel Philippines Inc. is looking at posting profits for the first time since taking over the steel manufacturing complex of the defunct National Steel Corp. in Iligan City in 2004.

“We will be on the black. We will go positive this year,” Lalit Kumar Sehgal, managing director of Global Steel, told reporters.

The company, however, will register profits only because its parent company—Global Steel Holdings Ltd. of India--would condone interest and penalty charges on loans extended to the Iligan-based firm.

“Our parent company will be condoning the interest and penalties. It is considering to convert into equity all loans and advances extended to us,” said Sehgal.

The Iligan-based subsidiary is fully owned by the parent firm, one of the big steel producers in India.

He did not say if the local company would increase its capitalization in order to facilitate the conversion of advances made by the parent firm into equity.

“I’m making money this year. We try to improve our manufacturing process year after year, for better efficiencies and lower costs,” said Sehgal.

He said high operating costs would continue to put a dent on overall costs.

The company’s monthly water consumption, he cited, amounted to about P700,000, while the electricity bill averages at P50 million each month.

Sehgal said while the company exports 70 percent of its production, it could not book higher sales until it produced higher-value products. Sales turnover last year hit $95 million.

The company produces mid-stream steel products such as hot and cold rolled coils, steel plates and hot rolled plates, from imported raw materials. Elaine Ruzul S. Ramos

O nga pala, what happened to the Linamon airport proposal?

They already have...by selling DVDs. :-)

i was in kindergarten during the peak of the MNLF conflict.Iligan was threatened numerous times but because we have the vital Agus hydroelectric system , the AFP provided the security needed to ensure that the power grid was never interrupted for prolonged periods.

I pray that the horrors of war will never be experienced by the young people out there.

GUYS! bad news! Confirmed MILF are now in Puga-an, at nag karo-on ng engwentro.
I vehemently oppose to posting negative news such as, as bad and as terrible as this one. This would only paint a bad image of the city of Iligan, which is entirely peaceful right now.

To all lurkers of this thread, I encourage you to take caution in reading this guy's post. Pila ka nnursing school sa iligan?
unsay passing rate nila sa board?
pila ang tuition?

The reason why I'm asking is because my nephew from Florida, USA, is interested to study in Iligan and he'd like to take up nursing as it is a high-paying job back in his home country. He's particularly interested to attend nursing at Lyceum of Iligan. Is that a good school?

last I heard, iligan medical college has the best program for nurses. Passing rates are usually available from the college secretary. She should write the school directly.
I don't mind bad news being posted here. The truth will eventually come out and trying to hide is futile exercise.. People visit the site for updates in iligan (good or bad), and not just viewing the pictures of same buildings over and over again. If buildings are all that I care about, then I just drive down the Vegas strip. I am pretty sure the view is much more breath taking

I admire your open-mindedness and flexibility to absorb rumors. However, not everyone lurking in this thread does have as much flexibility as you have. And that's why certain "rules" must apply in order to avoid misconception, misunderstanding, or worse, havoc.

The problem with message boards is that it's open and it's accessible anywhere in the world. If someone from Australia or UK may read the "rumors", it could create a wrong impression that a small but beautiful city of Iligan in the island of Mindanao is a war zone. It's not fair. And, it’s certainly not right. Because Iligan is so small, it can be generalized very easily. You want Iligan to have the image of Jolo, or worse, Irag? Well, I don't. Because the truth is, Iligan is not a war zone. Iligan is peaceful. And there is absolutely no reason to spread a wrong message to the entire world that Iligan is critical. That's not a well thought-out act. You are avoiding potential tourists and investors to visit the city, or worse, invest in the city because you are spreading a disgusting, appalling rumor.

I could not have cared if it were true. But it's not. Iligan is peaceful. I'm here and I can vouch that there is no threat in and around the city. Screw those rumors!

As to your suggestion for my nephew about nursing schools in Iligan, I'd say thank you very much. I know IMCC is a good school and has a very good reputation. It's also known to be a good feeder school for overseas employment. However, my nephew wants some options to IMCC and it's where I guess Lyceum should get into the picture.

Hope we'll learn something from this discussion. Carry on... :)

MSU-Iligan is a good school. Correction. It's an excellent school -- probably one of the best in the entire Philippines in terms of academic excellence. But it has a very hostile environment. The academic approach is cutthroat. I don't think my nephew would like to be in that kind of environment though. So, MSU-Iligan is out of the list. :)

There is no spoon... este no spoon feeding in MSU-IIT. As an MSU-IIT alumni, I know that the academic environment is so hostile that some of my classmates are forced to shift to another program or transfer to another school during my sophomore and junior years. You have to be resourceful in order to survive. :-)

That's why I don't have regrets not taking college at Cebu. Besides, my parents can't afford to pay the tuition which in fact, MSU-IIT has better programs. :D (Pardon my comparison, but then again, it's just my observation)

Wind Shear, congrats for having survived the MSU-Iligan environment. You must be a really serious smart as$ guy because you survived the grueling MSU-Iligan environment. MSU-Iligan is for top-notch kids who take academics very seriously. Its high drop out rate (MSU’s weeding out process) explains its high academic standards. And, you're one of those successful kids at MSU-Iligan, so, well done, my friend. Good job!

As for you’re having regrets for not having studied in Cebu, that's so petty, so don't even think you're less of a person because you have not studied in Cebu. Look where are you now? You’re there working. Good job!

To be frank with you, the best schools in Cebu are not better than MSU-Iligan. The best school in Cebu is the University of San Carlos (USC) and it is only just as good, if not a little bit inferior, to MSU-Iligan when it comes to academic prestige.

I agree with you. Even Manila and Cebu have many more crimes committed there than in Iligan, on a daily basis. But the problem with this specific scenario is that -- Iligan is a small city. So, it's very easy to generalize it. One small bad news about Iligan, and BOOM! It becomes infamous instantaneously. And the recovery period is very, very long. Another thing is that, Iligan is an up-and-coming tourist destination. So, it would lose many potential visitors...because of petty, nonsense news. Therefore, we really have to think what kind of news we spread. Unless, you don’t really care, go ahead and spread rumors.

We can say crimes are committed in NYC every single minute. No body really cares, because the truth is, there are far more things that you will encounter in NYC than the crimes themselves. Aside from its many great tourist spots that are major magnets for tourists from all over the world, it's also a very large city with 15 million people. That simply means that their economy is self-sufficient. They don’t need a Filipino tourist there as much as we Iliganons need foreign tourists here. That’s where the difference lies. The NYC skyline, the Statue of Liberty, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Empire State Building, the Rockefeller Center, the Central Park, Times Square, 5th Avenue, Broadway, to name a few, can attract tourists from all corners of the globe even at the height of a major threat. On the other hand, there is nothing in Iligan that can draw tourists in (even the local ones) like those NYC assets can. There’s practically nothing here in Iligan to match NYC resources. We only have peace-loving, caring and warm people to offer to the world right at this moment and this kid, Iliganon_boy, was trying to spoil them at no cost.

Again, this is skyscrapers forum. Not a tabloid for gay people where they can exchange rumors. Let’s just be responsible citizens of Iligan. Spreading news that Iligan is in serious trouble even when it’s not is doing a great disservice to our beloved city and fellow Iliganons.

I am sure it most certainly does, however for a fair comparison I guess you would have to scale it down to equal size, population etc. For a first hand look there may even be a forum on SSC for New York City although I have never looked at it, I only look at SSC-Iligan LOL.

For a first hand look however here is the website of one of the New York City TV station news sites. Almost every day someone is getting killed there for one reason or another

Despite what may seem like many difficulties in New York City, millions of tourists go there every year. Tell you what though, I felt safer in Iligan when I visited than I ever have when going to New York City. I do not live in the city itself but in the northern suburbs of it.

^^ hats off to Mayor Cruz :applause:

...Cruz said that if the attacks were a message from the MILF to him, he said the city and its residents will not be cowed.

Iligan City is one of the areas whose residents have rejected inclusion in a proposed Bangsamoro Juridical Entity, as provided in a memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain.

"Kung ito ang ginagawa nilang mensahe sa amin nagkakamali sila. Steadfast kami, dapat respetuhin ang tinig ng Iligan (If this is a message of the MILF to us, they are sadly mistaken. We remain steadfast against inclusion in the BJE)," he said.

It really shows how the MILF's stand on the peace process goes... They really are not for peace with regard to that BJE thing they have in mind. They're nothing but a bunch of cowards who hide behind the bushes waiting for unarmed people passing by.

With regard the recent MOA by the GRP-MILF panels, i cannot help but wonder why they include Palawan in that MOA.

Now, with the recent development as seen in the Gas and Oil Explorations in Palawan, I can only surmise that the supposed "peace negotiation" and "Bangsamoro Judicial Entity" is only about GREED IN MONEY AND POWER.

For one, the MILF want to get the 8 hinterland barangays of Iligan because of the gold and ore minerals in that area. And Palawan? I kept on thinking why Palawan when it is far from the mainland of Mindanao.

And with the help of a few infos, i found out why they want Palawan. Let me quote a post by one of the forumers in Oil and Natural Gas Discoveries thread:

11.6 billion barrels off the northern coast of Palawan???

This is based just on seismic readings, not drilling. But it still indicates great promise.

Nido Identifies 11.6 Billion Barrels of Oil-in-Place Potential; Seeks a Strategic Partner
By Nido Petroleum Ltd

PERTH, Australia, May 7 -- Nido Petroleum Ltd ("Nido") is pleased to announce that after completing several large seismic surveys, its deepwater prospects and leads inventory in the NW Palawan basin has oil-in-place potential of 11.6 billion barrels.

Following recent positive responses from major oil companies, Nido is now commencing its formal search for a strategic partner to explore for oil and gas in the Philippines and is inviting industry players to submit Expressions of Interest to participate in a world-class offshore exploration program.

Nido Petroleum's website:
http://www.nido.com.au/

Here's their press release with more info. Pages 10-12 have some geologic and exploration history info:
PDF News Release (http://www.nido.com.au/files/asxannounce/Strategic%20Partner%20Announcement%20060508.pdf)

We all know how much that billion barrels is worth not counting the other basins that have been drilled recently.

It is the famed oil minerals that dwell beneath the coastlines and reefs of Palawan that they want to grasp into. Just like that of the hinterlands of Iligan that has gold and ore minerals.

The MOA even told clearly that the resources included in the Judicial Entity (i shall quote, if i am right) shall be of the MILF's...

The denominator of this BANGSAMORO JUDICIAL ENTITY??? IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MONEY...

I agree. Let's continue to pray and be vigilant. Let's also pray for the people who protect and defend the constituents of the city---the military and the police.

These atrocities should be stopped. I think the MILF completely knows about what their commanders are doing. I don't think these renegades are "lost commands". The whole MILF are responsible for these atrocities, whether done by "lost commands" or not.

The governor of North Cotabato, in an interview with the ANC, once mentioned that it is their standard deceptive tactic---wreak havoc under the guise of being done by "lost commands".

I agree with his statement and I believe that it just goes to show that the group really does not care for Filipinos in general. It also goes to show that they are not yet ready (will they ever be?) for greater responsibilities such as having their own "entity," whatever that is.

The latest from abs-cbnnews.com
MILF rebels withdraw to Lanao uplands as conflict kills 31
Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) separatists have withdrawn to the hinterlands of Lanao del Norte after armed conflict in predominantly Christian coastal communities of the province left at least 28 civilians and three soldiers dead.

Lanao del Norte Gov. Mohamad Khalid Dimaporo told ANC's Top Story on Monday that MILF rebels have withdrawn from the province's coastal towns such as Kolambugan and that the military is "positioning itself to secure the province's coastal towns."

Dimaporo called on the miltiary to pursue the MILF rebels who occupied some of the provincial towns Monday morning and early afternoon.

MILF rebels raided several towns in Lanao del Norte province, looting businesses, burning homes and randomly attacking the mostly Christian villagers, officials said.

President Gloria Arroyo branded the attacks by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) guerrillas as "sneaky and treacherous" and in clear violation of peace negotiations, and ordered the army to "defend every inch" of soil.

AFP reporters saw nine bodies lying bloodied by a roadside in one village in Kauswagan town as black smoke billowed from burning houses.

Five other civilians were killed in another village by the marauding MILF fighters, while six more bodies were found, also in Kauswagan, later Monday.

All 20 bodies were taken by troops to two mortuaries in Iligan city a few kilometres (miles) away, an AFP reporter saw.

In the town of Kolambugan, six civilians and three soldiers were killed, mayor Beltran Lumaque said in a radio interview. Among those killed was Colonel Angelo Benitez, an army brigade commander whose troops had engaged the rebels in intense gunbattles since dawn.

Another rebel unit struck the town of Maasim, leaving two civilians dead as they ransacked a pawn shop and looted a drug store, said the military.

Some of the dead had been hacked by machetes.

Safe to return?

Dimaporo said the MILF rebels retreated to predominantly Muslim towns in the "interior, timberland areas" of Lanao del Norte near Lanao del Sur. He said the upland towns of Munai and Poona Paigapo of Lanao del Norte are the MILF strongholds of the province.

Citing military reports, Dimaporo said the MILF rebels who attacked the town were reinforced by rebels from Lanao del Sur and Maguindanao. "Those are the people, the groups who attacked Lanao del Norte today," he said.

With the MILF having withdrawn to the uplands of Lanao del Norte, Dimaporo said that "more or less, the communities are safe" for now.

He said the provincial government will try to convince those who evacuated to nearby areas like Ozamiz City in Misamis Occidental, and in Iligan City to return to their homes.

"We're trying to convince them to come back to the province, but more or less it's safe. The military has secured the national highway and they are doubling their forces and their highest priority now is to keep the coastal towns safe and secure," Dimaporo said.

Silent on MOA

He lamented that the MILF still attacked Lanao del Norte towns even if it did not openly oppose the Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD) between the government and the MILF, unlike North Cotabato and Zamboanga.

"All reserved their rage about the MOA signing and they waited until it reached Congress, and yet the MILF attacked our towns. We wanted to give peace a chance We didn't comment so much on the TV, on the radio opposing the MOA and yet the MILF still attacked Lanao del Norte," Dimaporo said.

"They're very unreasonable, and I believe the military should go in hot pursuit of the MILF and clear Lanao del Norte [of rebels]," he added.

Dimaporo claimed that the residents of Lanao del Norte who used to favor joining the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) after the 1996 peace agreement with the Moro National Liberation Front no longer want to be part of the expanded Bangsamoro territory after seeing the alleged failed governance in the ARMM.

"After seeing the performance of the ARMM ever since then, the people don't want to join the ARMM anymore. They don't want to be part of the Bangsamoro homeland. They are already receiving roads and infrastructure from the government. They are very happy with what they're receiving right now," he said.

At least 26 killed

Brig. Gen. Hilario Atendido, commander of the military's Task Force Tabak, said 23 civilians and three soldiers were killed in fighting in Lanao del Norte.

Around 500 rebels had occupied the town of Kolambugan while another 300 tried to occupy the town of Kauswagan.

Atendido said most of the civilian casualties were from Kolambugan and Linamon towns. Some of the civilians killed were hostages taken by the MLF during the occupation of Kolambugan.

"The civilians were killed when the rebels were withdrawing. They used them as human shields. The rebels killed them on their way out. They were killed as if they were like chicken. That is the report given to us by the civilians," Atendido said.

He said the military will "remain vigilant" against attacks from MILF rebels.

"We are still on alert for any possible return of the MILF. They withdrew from Kolambugan as the troops were entering the town," Atendido said.

Lt. Gen. Nelson Allaga, head of the AFP's Western Mindanao Command, told ANC's Top Story that the military was "now in pursuit operations" of the MILF rebels.

Allaga rejected calls for a ceasefire since they are "still running after the perpetrators" of the conflict in Lanao del Norte.

He said the MILF rebels did the most damage in the town of Kolambugan, but the military was allegedly able to limit the conflict in the towns of Kauswagan and Linamon. --with reports from AFP

War is coming

^^ I was expecting this to happen but not certain when. And so it did like a theft in the night. I know the minds of these MILF rebels. I knew then when they attacked in 1999 the bestiality of these creatures, I know now what they are capable of doing. I thought I would be expecting the Supreme Court decision for them to take drastic action but I was wrong as they pre-empted my judgment. I was hoping also that the regions affected will have 3 months of peace from date of my posting before the MILF could make an action as they will be building up forces. It turned out they can't wait any longer.

Lanao del Norte burns
By Roel Pareño and John Unson (http://www.philstar.com/index.php?Headlines&p=49&type=2&sec=24&aid=20080818172)
Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Rampaging Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels killed 33 people, including an Army lieutenant colonel, and wounded several others after coordinated attacks in five towns in Lanao del Norte and in Maasim, Sarangani yesterday morning.

Maj. Gen. Hilario Atendido, chief of the anti-terrorist Task Force Tabak, said the fatalities included Lt. Col. Angelo Benitez, executive officer of the Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade, and three other soldiers when their vehicle was ambushed in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte.

He said seven other civilians were among the fatalities in Kolambugan.

Atendido said the rebels killed 16 in Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte. The victims included seven farmers who were shot and hacked to death and a policeman identified as Police Officer 1 Dexter Salvacion.

Four other members of the Civilian Armed Forces Geographical Unit (Cafgu) were also killed in Kauswagan.

Two persons were killed in Maasim, Sarangani when the guerrillas indiscriminately fired at the local public market and nearby buildings. The rebels tried to burn the market but they were forced to withdraw by responding policemen.

The Lanao del Norte towns of Linamon, Bacolod and Maigo were also raided before dawn, the residents shot at and several houses and buildings burned. The rebels also reportedly took several hostages and attacked passenger buses that passed through their checkpoints along the highway.

Raffy Magbanua, information manager of the state-owned National Transmission Corp. (Transco), said unidentified men believed to be rebels also bombed and toppled three towers in Kauswagan.

Last week, three other Transco towers were also bombed, causing power failure in several towns in Lanao del Norte.

Army officer made initial report during firefight

Atendido said Lt. Col. Benitez was with six soldiers tailing behind a passenger bus at Barangay Kulasian in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte at around 4 a.m. when MILF rebels ambushed their vehicle.

He said Benitez and his group escaped and survived the ambush but the rebels torched the bus and shot several passengers.

Atendido said Benitez was on his way to Task Force Tabak headquarters in Iligan City to report as operations chief of the task force, when they were ambushed in Kolambugan.

He said Benitez and his group decided to stay and fight the rebels and kept reporting to him the situation in Kolambugan.

“He (Benitez) was the one who provided us the movement of the MILF in the area until such time they were cornered at the market area,” Atendido said.

He said the last message of Benitez was: “Sir, na-corner na kami.”

“We just want to show that his (Benitez) gallant effort will not be in vain. He was providing to us the vital information on the movement of the MILF,” Atendido said.

Rebels use civilians as human shields

Atendido said the situation remains tense after the MILF rebels who withdrew from Kolambugan took civilian hostages and used them as human shields.

At least 300 MILF rebels took control of Kolambugan’s poblacion before noon yesterday.

He said the MILF rebels have already withdrawn from Kolambugan and the other occupied towns, but they took several male hostages as human shields and have reportedly fled to the mountains in Maigo town.

Army troops were able to liberate the town of Kauswagan, Kolambugan, Linamon, Maigo, and Bacolod in Lanao del Norte.

“They (MILF) withdrew towards the nearby hinterlands,” Atendido said.

He said the rebels were forced to abandon the towns to evade an all-out military and police offensive.

The children and women previously held by the MILF were released as the rebels withdrew.

The military said rebel casualties have not yet been determined.

MILF disowns attacks

Eid Kabalu, MILF spokesman, denied that the rebel leadership ordered the attacks and claimed that the atrocities could have been conducted by a “third force” that wants to discredit the MILF.

“We know there are other groups opposed to the peace process and conducting sabotage operations,” Kabalu said, adding that the MILF leadership is verifying the situation in the field.

“This (attack) is not sanctioned. There is no such order from MILF leadership to launch an attack on government forces,” Kabalu said. Kabalu said the MILF leadership had been unable to contact Commander Bravo.

The rebel attacks came amid the uncertainty over a controversial agreement between the government and the MILF that gives the rebels more territory. The accord was put on hold after the Supreme Court issued a temporary restraining order stopping the signing of the memorandum of agreement on ancestral domain in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia last Aug. 5, after protesting local officials petitioned the court.

The escalation of the rebel offensive started last Sunday after MILF rebels killed four soldiers and three militiamen while 11 others were wounded after an ambush in Barangay Ilian, Mulondo, Lanao del Sur.

Military units had earlier forced out more than 100 rebels occupying several villages in Aleosan, North Cotabato after the Supreme Court stopped the signing of the peace accord.

Mayor Beltran Lumaque of Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte, said the rebels entered the town from different directions, firing their rifles and rocket-propelled grenades, and confronted local policemen and soldiers.

The rebels also blocked a highway connecting the cities of Pagadian and Iligan and opened fire at approaching buses.

Lumaque said the rebels also burned the buildings at Kolambugan’s National High School.

“We’re trapped. There’s no way out. They (rebels) are at both ends of the national highway, which are the only entry and exit points to our town,” Lumaque said.

Residents were only able to bring the wounded victims to hospitals in Pagadian City when the rebels allowed them to pass the checkpoints after an hour-long negotiation with MILF rebels.

Local officials said Abdullah Macapaar, alias Commander Bravo, led the rebels that attacked Kolambugan and Kauswagan.

Guerrillas attack Sarangani public market

Chief Superintendent Felizardo Serapio, Region 12 police director, said the rebels occupied the public market of Maasim, Sarangani, ransacked stalls of vendors and opened fire at surrounding buildings.

Serapio said the rebels tried to burn the market but the attackers withdrew after responding policemen engaged the guerrillas.

Another group of rebels fired at a nearby Army detachment where several guerrillas were wounded. They later escaped to a nearby jungle carrying their wounded companions.

MILF forces also attacked a police detachment at Barangay Kulasihan at the boundary of Kolambugan and Maigo towns in Lanao del Norte and took control of the national highway after ambushing a passenger bus bound for Pagadian City.

Members of the Army’s 5th Infantry Battalion based in Lanao del Norte launched a counter offensive against the rebels.

Two helicopter gunships were deployed from the Army’s 4th Infantry Division in Cagayan de Oro City and from the Tabak Division in Pulacan, Zamboanga del Sur.

The rebels also blew up a bridge near the ancestral house of President Arroyo in Iligan City.

The bridge connects Iligan City and Linamon, Lanao del Norte.

Linamon Mayor Noel Deano said hundreds of residents from Linamon, Kauswagan, Kolambugan and Maigo were evacuated to Iligan City.

Pump boats to Iligan transported most of the evacuees since the rebels took control of the national highway.

Evacuees from Linamon and Kauswagan took shelter at the Iligan City National High School and an elementary school in Barangay Buruun.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) reported that almost 7,000 individuals have sought refuge in several schools, which have been converted into evacuation centers in Iligan City and Lanao del Norte.

Chief Superintendent Leopoldo Bataoil, chief of the PNP Directorate for Police Community Relations, said about 2,000 individuals are now in Kauswagan Elementary School; 1,350 persons in Iligan Central Elementary School; 1,300 in Iligan City National High School from the town of Maigo and Bacolod towns; 700 in Boroon also in Iligan; 700 in Barangay Ma. Cristina at Fuentes gymnasium and 587 persons in Tobod Central School.

MILF Declared War!
By James Mananghaya
Tuesday, August 19, 2008

Armed Forces chief Gen. Alexander Yano said the deadly attacks on several towns in Mindanao by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels showed the secessionist group’s lack of control over its field commanders.

“It appears that several MILF sub-commanders are not controlled by the MILF leadership and are just using the peace process as a blanket to launch violent attacks against the people of Mindanao,” Yano said at a press briefing at Camp Aguinaldo yesterday.

“These developments are clear manifestations of the insincerity to the peace process of a significant portion of the MILF,” he added.

He said the separatist rebels’ rampage, starting with the ambush of government troops in Lanao del Sur, is a “virtual declaration of war against the duly constituted authority, which was confirmed by Commander Bravo’s declaration of jihad or Holy War.”

“The AFP shall not allow this to go on, we cannot allow ambuscades, arson, kidnapping, hostage taking, blocking of main highways and other atrocities to be perpetrated by the MILF against the Filipino people,” he said.

Yano said there are enough troops in Mindanao to deal with the MILF and that more soldiers are prepared for deployment to affected areas if the need arises.

“In fact, our troops are already on the ground as early as dawn yesterday morning. They are heavily engaged in these areas and we are confident that we can restore normalcy and we can take drastic action against these groups,” he said.

The AFP chief also said that units in other areas have been ordered to take an “active defense stance” to prevent the fighting from spilling over to other nearby towns and provinces.

Brig. Gen. Hilario Atendido, chief of the anti-terrorist Task Force Tabak, said in a phone interview that the MILF rebels left the occupied towns at around noon yesterday but took with them male civilians as human shields.

The MILF leadership, said spokesman Eid Kabalu, did not sanction the attacks and the commanders involved vented their frustration over the botched signing of the Memorandum of Agreement on ancestral domain in Malaysia last Aug. 5.

House Speaker Jose Nograles said the violence in Lanao del Norte showed the MILF leadership has lost its control over field commanders.

“Is the leadership of the MILF really in control over their field commanders?” he asked, pointing out that the MILF hierarchy needs to “clarify if their field commanders still obey their chain of command.”

“How can we proceed with the peace talks if the top officials of the MILF cannot control their field commanders (who) are apparently acting on their own?”

In a statement, Nograles said the “incursions” by the separatist rebels insurgents are a “very bad sign that the MILF chain-of-command is breaking apart.”

He noted that even Kabalu was surprised by the recent attacks.

“We really have to know first from the MILF leaders if they are still in control. Those who are out of line should be relieved from their posts and should be punished by the MILF leadership for breaking the chain-of-command,” Nograles suggested.

Reports said a certain Commander Bravo, head of the 102 MILF Base Command, led the attacks.

“These attacks should be condemned by everyone, including the leaders of the MILF. These acts of criminality and terrorism by rebel Muslim groups should be dealt with quickly and met frontally with the full force of the law,” he said.

“The government and our armed forces cannot afford now to deal with this kind of situation with kid gloves. We want peace, but when terrorism is the result of peace negotiations, the terrorists must be stopped and subdued at all cost,” Nograles added.

To show good faith, Nograles urged the MILF leadership to help the government neutralize the group of Bravo.

“Even the top leaders of the MILF should not let this incident pass. This is an insult to their leadership. Clearly, Commander Bravo is not inclined to respect the MILF chain-of-command and this is a very serious offense in any military organization,” Nograles said.

Puno to MILF: Are we talking to the right guys?
08/18/2008 | 11:02 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Following the attacks by the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) on some Mindanao provinces, the government hinted Monday night it is having second thoughts about the ongoing peace talks with the rebel group.

Interior secretary Ronaldo Puno, emerging from a meeting of the National Security Council, said the MILF has shown bad faith in their peace efforts in past weeks.

"Are we talking to the correct people? We have been bending over backwards to show good faith (in the peace negotiations with the MILF) but these past weeks, (the MILF has shown) the exact opposite," Puno said in a statement posted on the Office of the Press Secretary website Monday night.

He admitted the government is now "entertaining doubts" and feels that "there has been a breach in the peace/ceasefire agreement."

For his part, defense secretary Gilbert Teodoro Jr. reminded the MILF it is incumbent on them "not to coddle members who have been sowing terror in Mindanao."

Puno said the MILF's attacks in Lanao del Norte are an "affront to the national government."

He said the treacherous MILF attacks show an "absence of good faith" on the part of the MILF.

But he said government remains "hopeful" that there are still enough elements in the MILF who are interested in a peaceful settlement of the Mindanao conflict.

Still, he admitted the events that took place in Mindanao in the past 24 hours were "not very encouraging."

For their part, press secretary Jesus Dureza and Teodoro said the recent attacks by MILF members led by Umbra Kato in North Cotabato last week, and the men of a Commander Bravo in Lanao del Norte and Saranggani had "absolutely no justification."

"Those attacks were pure criminal acts without any justification," Dureza and Teodoro said.

Teodoro added it was "obvious that terrorism was involved" in the MILF s simultaneous attacks in Lanao del Norte and Saranggani province this morning.

But he assured there are enough government forces on the ground to prevent a repeat of Monday's MILF rampage. The AFP is ready to augment forces in Mindanao if needed, he said.

"When they (MILF) attacked, they took themselves out of the ambit of the ceasefire agreement," Dureza added. - GMANews.TV (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/114514/Puno-to-MILF-Are-we-talking-to-the-right-guys)

Please do not post any news articles here especially not pertaining to Iligan City. There's a Lanao Del Norte thread. Thank you

Iligan not part of Lanao del Norte

The Iligan City Council in its recently approved Resolution No. 08-413, reiterated to the general public and the various national offices, bureaus, and local government units that Iligan City is neither a part of Lanao del Norte nor a component city and therefore correspondence and all other communications destined for addresses in Iligan City do not need to include "Lanao del Norte."

The primary reason according to Councilor Bayani Areola, author of the resolution, is that Iligan City has never been a component city, but was classified in 1983 as a Highly-urbanized city. Hence Iligan City is politically and administratively separate from the province of Lanao del Norte. This move also aims to put an end to the misconception that Iligan is still part of the province of Lanao del Norte . Iligan was reclassified as a highly urbanized city in 1983 after its population reached 200,000.
