Export prospects for abaca bright - FIDA

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (30 August) -- There is bright prospect of the abaca industry especially in the export market as many are into shifting usage of products with the fiber as base material to replace the use among others plastic products. The price per kilo of the fiber is increasing with the premium variety pegged at P70 per kilo on the average.

Olympio B. Macarayan, Ph. D., OIC-Regional Director of Fiber Industry Development Authority (FIDA XI) said with the Philippines as the only abaca producer in the world, countries like Germany, USA, UK, Japan, China and Indonesia source their materials from us.

He said the Philippine contribution of the export market of abaca fiber is about US$ 84 million.

The price he said is increasing there are still a lot of work to catch to improve production.

On the average, the farmer only gets 500 kilos per hectare per year but Southern Mindanao hit 750 kilos per hectare per year although potential yield is at 3,000 kilos per hectare per year given the necessary and appropriate farm inputs.

But Macarayan said the farmers sell their products to traders on prices based on grade and class and color with S2, I and H grades priced between P68 to P70 per kilo. The JK classification is priced at P52 per kilo, S3 – P45, the Y at P32 a kilo and damaged P3 per kilo,

He said the premium fiber or Class A has a fine grade, white color and one meter in length.

But the trader buys the product all-in at P50 per kilo then they classify the products before they deliver them to the exporter that will now demand a high price based of the grade.

In Davao City he said the main buyer for raw fiber is the Ching Bee Trader Corporation. The other exporter, Tag Fiber a US based exporter, has still to wait for the reopening of the operations.

The country he said has six pulpers where Mindanao has only one in Iligan, the New Tech Pulp Company, two in Leyte, the Ching Bee Pulper and Agusan Mill, Bicol, 2 – the Isarog Pulp and Albay Development Corporation, and the Canlubang Pulp in Luzon.

Of the 153,000 hectares in the Philippines planted to abaca, Southern Mindanao covers about 14,000 hectares and the government is embarking into expanding the production areas.

"We are serious of the expansion project because we saw the potential in the world market," he said.

In fact in Davao City, the private and government sector is organizing the Davao City Abaca Industry Development Council in order to give focus on the revival of the abaca industry.

He said that in the 1940s during the Japanese time, areas planted to abaca covered some 40,000 hectares but now only 800 hectares were left mostly in Toril, Marilog and Paquibato that are being tended by the indigenous peoples.

"The Council will be able to intensify the advocacy and awareness on the abaca industry as many sector are tapping the fiber for their production," he said.

He cited as an example that bank notes and security papers of countries around the world already uses abaca fiber because of its durability where Japan and the US adopts about 60 percent while the Philippines only at 20 percent utilization. (PIA) [top]

The Development of the Marketplace (DM) is a competitive grant program of the World Bank that identifies and funds innovative and early stage projects with high potentials for development impact. Supported by the Global Environment Facility (GEF), International Finance Corporation (IFC), and other partners, the competition is seeking innovations in three sub-themes: 1) linking small-scale farmers to input-output markets, 2) improving land access and tenure for the poor, and 3) promoting the environmental services of agriculture in addressing climate change and biodiversity conservation.

All finalists are invited to the World Bank headquarters in Washington D.C. in September 22-26, 2008 to present their ideas to a distinguished jury composed of 40 senior level international development experts and vie for grants at the DM2008 Marketplace event. They will also participate in a series of knowledge exchange sessions and workshops aimed at strengthening their capacity to implement their proposed project idea. By the end of the Marketplace, 20 or more projects will be declared winners.

No, it's not pollution like in other cities. Iligan boasts some clean air, in fact. The haze here was generated by Manang who was cooking food the old-fashioned way in her 'dirty' kitchen---so called 'dirty' because wood is burned to make fire that is used for cooking, and the resulting ashes makes the kitchen area black.

guys you are very fortunate to be born and have grown up in a place with sea scapes like this. i grew up in cagayan valley and it's literally a valley - surrounded by mountainous provinces. so you can see a seemingly endless flat plains (360-degress) with obscured mountains from afar. you will need to cross those mountains to see the sea! :)

Designing for Success : SLERS' Pica-Pica Cart

Mike Banos
August 31, 2008

Integrity and Teamwork are not the usual buzz words which come to mind when one thinks of I.T. But for Mercedes "Litlit" Pelaez-Mejia and Clara Gonzales-Elizaga, these are the two key elements which has made SLERS Industries, Inc. "Pica-Pica" Cart their personal stylistic triumph.

Litlit is the franchising director for SLERS Industries, Inc., a Cagayan de Oro based family-business started by her mother Ofelia "Fely" Cosin-Pelaez 38 years ago in Del Monte, Bukidnon. Beginning with country style ham she made for plantation employees during Christmas, the home-based "cottage industry" eventually grew to encompass a full range of meat products including Pinoy staples tocino and longganisa, bacon and hotdog, and of course its flagship product, the famous SLERS Jamon de Cagayan de Oro.

Clara is the other half of the "Mom-and-Pop" dynamic duo of Nazca Designs. Together with hubby Elson, Nazca offers clients photography, web site development, product design and raw materials development services.

Nazca and SLERS go back a long way to the time when Litlit asked Clara to improve the packaging for their sweet ham. The Nazca version proved so successful in increasing sales that Litlit immediately asked Clara to improve the packaging for their Jamon de Cagayan de Oro. Since then, SLERS has retained Nazca as the exclusive designer for its products.

"The design of our products and fixtures are a continuing process between me and Clara," Litlit notes. "If I have an idea, I bring it to Clara who evaluates if it is workable and most important, viable financially and commercially."

But it was when Litlit asked Clara and Elson to work on SLERS Chicharon that the company's decision to go through a formal design process really proved itself. Introduced in January 2006, SLERS Chicharon quickly became the company's fastest moving and most famous product, encouraging Litlit to develop a pasalubong style kiosk which they have franchised as the SLERS PiCA PiCA.

"PiCA PiCA special to me because I participated in designing its brand identity even before it was born. Kamulo pa conceptualize sa PiCA PiCA I was there already there. I designed the logo, conceptualize its visual identity, designed the packaging, designed the cart, planned the colors schemes, and even helped with the mascot design, "Clara said.

"Thus, our kiosk is the product of a design evolution which has remained consistent with its design theme and product concept laid down by Litlit. Through this process, we have developed a teamwork which has given us what we want in terms of product development while at the same time retaining our consistency in terms of our design theme," she added.

The SLERS PiCA PiCA kiosk is focused on the SLERS Chicharon which is now available in two types (with or without pork fats) and which are each available as "hot" and "standard" versions. Besides the four types of Chicharon, the kiosk also carries a newly developed complementary product, SLERS Sukang Tuba which provides livelihood to rural families in El Salvador and other towns in Misamis Oriental, and SLERS Banana Fritters, which provide similar livelihood for a woman's association in Barangay Lumbia in Cagayan de Oro.

The new design kiosk had its baptism of fire in March 2007 at the CITEM National Trade Fair where it garnered a nomination for "Best Booth Design".

"PiCA PiCA started with the right mindset, in terms of design. From the very beginning it had its own visual identity," Clara noted. "It's unlike most local brands who starts first with producing and distributing the product and worrying about the design later. In PiCA PiCA's case, the design was born together with the product."

As a fitting tribute to the active collaboration between artist and owner, SLERS was recognized with the "Franchisor's Touch" award during the Association of Filipino Franchisors, Inc. (AFFI) annual trade fair last July 2007 where the company was recognized for its "personal touch" in explaining the franchise to interested visitors, with Litlit personally presenting the PiCA PiCA concept for the duration of the exhibit. In its latest triumph, the booth was awarded "Best Dressed Booth" (Food Category) in the recently concluded Kahimunan Mindanao '08 Island Fair at the Atrium of the Limketkai Mall in Cagayan de Oro City.

The PiCA PiCA kiosks are now deployed to the company's five franchisees in General Santos and Davao cities, as well as SLERS seven company owned outlets in Cagayan de Oro, Bukidnon and Iligan where they've become recognized as landmarks where one can get the famous SLERS Chicharon.

In fact, the kiosks have proven so successful its design has been copied lock, stock and barrel by some competitors. This has sometimes led Litlit and Clara to rue how their time, money and effort has been so easily taken advantage off by their competitors, but eventually, it has led them to realize just how true the old adage about "imitation being the sincerest form of flattery" is.

Lanao officials sign peace covenant; Iligan mayor announces new meaning for "MILF"
Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews
Sunday, 31 August 2008 13:25

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/30 August) – Mayor Lawrence Cruz here has found a new meaning for MILF and it is not the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).

For Cruz, MILF now stands for “Marawi Iligan and Lanao Friendship.”

Cruz announced this new meaning at the Peace Summit today. The Summit convened government officials and civil society representatives to “strengthen the peaceful relationship of residents in the region and to craft a Covenant of Peace.”

Some 500 participants raised their hands together as they sang “Heal the World.”

Cruz said the participants are “children of peace of Magbabaya, Allah and God for peace.”

“This is initiated by leaders of Lanao who agreed that war is not an alternative but peace,” he said.

CCRO ILIGAN, GIPASIDUNGGAN ISIP ‘NO. 4 BEST PERFORMING LCRO’ SA NASUD
09/01/08

(mta)

ZOEY CAFE
Posted by joiedevivre
August 29, 2008

Food establishments come and go. You see them popping out like mushrooms in the cornfield. On July 8, 2002 ZOEY CAFE opened its doors to the public.I was one of the many who immediately went to the cafe to check it out and sample what they have to offer. The interiors are relaxed creating a cozy ambiance where you can be yourself and not worry about anything . It was something Iligan has not seen before.

They started out small just selling coffee, pastries and cakes but later on created an extensive menu that not only catered sandwiches and pasta but also included full course meals. The staff are courteous and accommodating, providing personalized service to its customers.

ZOEY CAFE is a place where you could go to alone, and you could be sure you'd be among friends. You don't need to call up the gang because one or five of them would already be there.

The brother and sister tandem of Donald and Doreen is a huge success in the food industry. ZOEY CAFE is here to stay to create a YUMMY gastronomic experience for all of us.

Posted below are pictures of my favorites. I highly recommend them!

About the author

Aptly named "JOIE DE VIVRE" (zhwä' də vē'vrə), translated to English it means "Love Of Life" or "Joy Of Living". This blog will showcase deserving Iliganons, good food & dining, places of interest, fashion, culture and events Iligan-related.

When an old friend from high school invited me to come up with a BLOG to be featured in the official website of Iligan City i was absolutely surprised. I thought he was just joking, only after meeting him did i realize that he was really serious. Never in my wildest dreams did i ever imagine myself as someone capable of such a huge responsibility. The idea of writing for the city can be daunting. Although i have to admit i really love being able to express myself through my BLOG.

Living life could be different things to different people. But for me it is everything. It takes all shapes and forms: food, fashion, events, people, places; anything that gives a new meaning to everything. The things that i will write in my BLOG would be mostly about the adventures of my day to day existence.

I am just your regular Iliganon. Already in my 30's and fabulously loving the kind of life that i have now. Writing is just an extension of my so called artistic side. It is like comfort food. My main bread and butter is really being a Financial Services Consultant for a life insurance company. Born and raised in Iligan City enabled me to see and experience the different things she has to offer.

Come and join me in my adventure as we explore the endless possibilities.

When you can be half way around the world from where you live, walk into a place, sit down at a table and feel right at home I think that really says something. This is how I felt soon after entering Zoey cafe. Ambience like that is something you just can't buy at any price. Everything was clean and bright, the hospitality and service was great, a nice selection on the menu, properly prepared and attractively served. That generous sized slice of Carrot Cake I enjoyed after my meal is something I will not soon forget !

Zoey Cafe, a unique experience I look forward to having again !

Alingatong, I'd like to ask if you happen to notice if the St. Anthony's Maternity Clinic, is still in its original location. If I'm not mistaken it is located corner of Lluch St. and De Leon St., fronting the Cathedral Centrum, ....if its still there, and if its not too much of a favor, can you take a pic of it and post it here?

That Clinic might not get the privilege of being preserved and cited as a historical landmark, but it holds a special place in my heart. It is here where I and three of my brothers first saw light. I no longer live in Iligan City and I hope that someday when my children visits my birthplace they can still get a glimpse of the very place where I was born.

Daghang Salamat daan, Alingatong.

Pilmico Foods Corp. wins TESDA national search for best partner

The Regional Office of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) in Northern Mindanao is pleased to announce that Pilmico Foods Corp., of Iligan City was declared national winner for best technical-vocational education and training partner (industry sector) in the 2008 National Kabalikat search.

The Kabalikat Search is a reward mechanism that recognizes TESDA’s partners in middle-level skills development. The search was conducted in line with the agency’s 14th founding anniversary last August 25, 2008 with the theme: "TESDA sa ikalabing-apat: kasanayan walang katapat, kabuhayan angat sa lahat!"

Pilmico through its Admin Officer Mrs. Ma. Fe S. Capistrano received a trophy from Secretary Augusto Boboy Syjuco, TESDA Director General and was honored during the national awarding ceremonies held at the agency’s head office in Taguig, Metro Manila last August 21, 2008.

TESDA-10 OIC Regional Director Ofelia M. Del Bando said in a statement that Pilmico, formerly Pillsbury Milling Corp., was recognized for its outstanding contribution in the promotion of technical education and skills development especially in the areas of scholarship, donation, placement assistance, technical services, social responsibility, and promotion and advocacy in Region 10.

Pilmico was recognized at the regional office level in a modest program last Aug. 26, 2008, along with Prof. Alfredo C. Lopez of St. Laurence Institute of Technology, Iligan City, the 2008 regional winner for the search for President Ramon Magsaysay Outstanding Filipino Worker Award, self-employed category.

Created in 1994 through R. A. 7796, TESDA is a merger of the National Manpower and Youth Council, the Bureau of Technical Vocational Education of the then Department of Education, Culture and Sports and the apprenticeship program of the DOLE for the purpose of providing relevant, accessible, and high quality technical education and skills development of middle-level manpower responsive to and in accordance with the national development goals and priorities. as much as that would be a very cool event, i doubt its authenticity. for that to happen, the earth's rotation has to slow down or the earth's axis will tilt. but immediately after 36 hours back to normal ang rotation ng earth just like that? highly unlikely. but then again, with all the crazy things that have been happening lately, anything is possible.

A Pizza Discovery!
Posted by joiedevivre
September 2, 2008

One rainy afternoon my heiress friend Lucy and I were driving around the city, both of us practically bored. We were just making the rounds of the major street corners where you can usually find delicious "eye candies." Not being able to find our own candy we just decided to go back from where we came from. An hour had past and we started to get hungry. As we were driving along Tubod Highway in Camague we saw a huge tarpaulin with pictures of different pizzas. I told my friend Lucy to park in front of the undiscovered joint.

The place is cozy, 30 square meters big and air-conditioned. When the cook came out of the kitchen to take our orders, Lucy and I were surprised to see Bong Aniceto, an old friend from our Chili Verde days. We ordered Bacon and Mushroom LARGE of course to fill up our very hungry stomach.

The pizza was great. The crust is not too thin and not too thick, it’s just enough. Lucy and I loved it so much that we agreed to go back there every Wednesday for lunch until we have tried all their pizzas. So for 7 straight Wednesdays we would always go back there same time, same place. Having our fresh home made pizza for lunch.

Bong uses the freshest ingredients possible which explain the kick that his pizzas give you, sweet green bell peppers, creamy cheese toppings, crispy bacon and many more.

Lucy loves Ground Beef with Mushrooms while I craved for Garden Fresh since vegetable is the way for me.

Pizza lovers, go to PIZZA STATION and try what they have to offer.

Iligan City Water Supply Development and Expansion Project

Project Plan:
http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/jeannette/old_mayors/new.jpg

Project Brief:

The Iligan City Government has entered a loan agreement with World Bank through Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) under the Support for Strategic Local Development Investment Project (S2LDIP). Under the loan agreement entered into by LBP and the City of Iligan dated February 22, 2007, the city sub-loaned the amount of P445.500-Million for its Iligan City Water Supply Development & Expansion Project. The city will put up equity of not less than P50-Million, including any additional budgetary requirements in excess of the estimated costs. This loan will be payable in 15 years from 2008 up to 2022 with a grace period of three (3) years on principal payment

Objective:

This development and expansion project aims to provide adequate potable water supply to 38 mainly coastal barangays (86%) of Iligan City. The other six (6) barangays (14%) are in hinterland and/or mountainous areas which are not covered for the meantime by the water expansion project. The water demand projections were evaluated based on the water demand projections for the next 15 years (2008 up to 2022) with coverage areas divided into System 1 (10 barangays), System 2 (6 barangays) and System 3 (22 barangays).

The coverage includes residential, institutional, commercial and industrial connections based on the population projections from the National Statistics Office, and standard per capita water consumption in the Philippines.

Scope of Work and Timetable:

The project component includes the construction of an Intake Dam similar to the existing intake structure at Ditucalan water source. The water sources from Spring No. 3 and 4 at Abaga area, Barangay Upper Tominobo will pass through this intake and deliver the water supply via the main transmission 24-inch to 16-inch pipeline along the national highway up to Barangay Dalipuga.

The project is expected to be completed on January 30, 2010 due to some delays brought about by the negotiations of the Road Right-of-Way (RROW) and the on-going competitive bidding process which is greatly affected by the soaring global price escalation of fuel and construction materials.

Security measures set for Iligan's San Miguel fiesta, Tourism Week celebration

by Lorry V. Gabule

ICC-Iligan City (4 September) -- Police Director Sr. Supt. Virgilio T. Ranes of the Philippine National Police (PNP) in Iligan City has assured Iliganons and visitors of the "San Miguel Fiesta" on September 29 and the Tourism Week Celebration from September 20-30 that maximum security will be implemented in the City.

The City has created Task Force San Miguel, which is composed of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and security support groups to ensure that people who will participate in these events will be safe, said Ranes.

He stressed that elements from the Special Action Force (SAF) has also augmented the security force, adding that the group has been in the city for a sometime now.

Ranes said security measures are in place for the several activities in line for the City fiesta such as street dancing and the procession of San Miguel, where hundreds of devotees are expected to attend.

But Ranes also emphasized that the vigilance of the people also plays an integral part in making the event peaceful and secured.

Meanwhile, the PNP in Iligan have coordinated with the Association of Barangay Captains (ABC), through its president Bernard Pacaña, the Barangay Captain of Poblacion, in conducting a Bomb Awareness Seminar, spearheaded by the Explosives Ordinance Division of the City.

"We required Barangay officials, representatives from security agencies, hotels, business establishments, schools, to attend the seminar. The aim is to equip them with early bomb detection information so that they can immediately report it to the law implementing authorities, Ranes said. (PIA-10)

Processing Plant Nears Completion!
by: Rendo Stuart

Green Gold Gourmet’s desire to improve the quality of its products and manufacture has inspired the construction of a processing plant located at Purok 3, Baranggay Puga-an, Iligan City. Product Safety features is installed in the facility to ensure that the goods are clean and free from contamination.
This eco-friendly facility is designed to emit zero air pollution, while keeping solid waste to a biodegradable minimum. Liquid waste is estimated to equal that of any regular household. Electrical consumption is greatly reduced by sunlight roofing and natural ventilation systems.

The Facility is nearing its completion and should be ready before Christmas.

alam mo, becoz competition is tough for trendline. I think its high time they invest on a mini mall jst like ive seen in Tagbilaran, Bohol called Bohol Quality. My wife comes from there and she said the five storey mini mall which is i think 1/3the size of our new Gaisano Super City Mall used to be like our "Trendline". As the talks that Gaisano's are going to build a shopping center loomed, the local commercial centers there like Bohol Quality (now BQ Mall) and Plaza Marcela (also a dept. store operator) built their malls: BQ Mall of Bohol Quality and Island City Mall of Plaza Marcela. Island City Mall is big which is at most 1 1/2 size of our Gaisano and there is no parking building, just a wide parking lot by the mall.

Now, Bohol has two malls of their own brands. And the result of that? The Gaisanos did not pursue the plan to build a shopping center there.

I wonder how or local shopping operators answer to the challenge of big mall operators such as the Gaisanos? Coz renovating is nice but even to that, it isn't just enough.

So, as i told my wife before when we visited Bohol: "Mosukol jud inyong mga negosyante sa mga dagko nga kontra no?" I think that what they did in Tagbilaran is worth emulating. Citing the smallness of the city and the state of infrastructure of Tagbilaran, Iligan is much better but they have two malls when we did not have Gaisano Super City Mall yet.

Yes and i think its also high time Iliganons will represent something that we can proudly call of our own. The same thing at the following: CdeO has LKKS and Ororama, KCCC of Koronadal, NCCC of Davao and etc.

Pilmico opens P450-M feedmill in Iligan
By Richel Umel

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/jeannette/old_mayors/pilmico.jpg

ILIGAN CITY - The Pilmico Foods Corporation inaugurated its P450-million feedmill inside its plant site in Kiwalan, Iligan City Thursday.

Antonio Moraza, Pilmico Food Corporation president and Chief Executive Officer, told Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro that the feedmill in Iligan City has been their dream for quite sometime. The second feedmill in the south is a must to efficiently and effectively cover the growing feed needs nationwide.

The Fil-American strategy has always been to supply feeds to the whole country in which 50 percent of the total market is in Visayas and Mindanao respectively.

The new feedmill has a capacity of 200 metric tons per hour.

Pilmico has been in Mindanao for nearly 50 years committed to grow and invest in the area. The flour mills are built either close to the grain source or to the customer.

Why built in Iligan?

The flour milling complex offers synergies in the use of the existing infrastructure, management, logistics, common pier and storage facilities, as well as maximizing economies of scale in the acquisition of raw materials.

Moraza said another vital consideration was the availability of raw materials in and around Mindanao such as corn, coco oil, coco meal, rice bran, pollard, cassava and molasses.

He said, it would also translate into a planted area of 10,000 hectares with a lot of job opportunities being created and this will keep the farmers and their linkages busy, Moraza added.

Moraza said the corporation had installed the latest communications technology to ensure the communication link between Iligan City and the technical partner Land O' lakes of the United States, one of the largest feed producers in the worlds, and the Ottavanger, the manufacturer of our feedmill, to guarantee that the feeds are of the most consistent quality and the highest nutrition possible.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz assured the Plimico Foods Corporation that in due time, they will avail a tax holiday for five years pending completion of the required documents from Pilmico.

Senator Mar Roxas, who graced the occasion, said the national government is looking towards the direction of a sustainable peace. "There is hope in Mindanao", Roxas added.

Mayor Cruz expressed high hopes that in spite the recent challenges that Iligan City's peace and order faced, the city executive is more than confident that the industrial city of the south would be able to attain industrial peace and sustainability.

The new feed mill is fully automated to receive raw materials to bagging of pelleted feeds and has a capacity to produce 480 metric tons per day of high quality feeds. And, to ensure that only the best products would reach the market, the organization employs strict quality standards through its Quality Assurance team.

Pilmico's feed mill is geared to supply the demands of the Visayas and Mindanao markets.

The new feed mill will produce animal rations for swine and poultry carrying the brand Farmer's Edge. This feed brand has been in the Visayas and Mindanao market for the last 5 years through Fil Am Foods, Inc. with its plant located at Sto. Domingo 2, Capas, Tarlac. Through time, Farmer's Edge has gained confidence from its consumers because of its quality and trusted performance that with a grain of pellet comes a complete nutrition suited to your animal's nutritional needs.

The presence of the feed mill in Mindanao brings not only easy access to high quality products but business and career opportunities as well. Farmer's Edge, your total solution and is your partner to economic progress.(with PR)

"Iligan was a sad little town on the northern shore of Mindanao, with a barely adequate port, unlikely to be on any newcomer's list of choice assignments. But Gen. Pershing had come to know well both the history and the geography of the region and had reasoned that the shabby settlement would not remain insignificant. Iligan was unique in being a predominantly Muslim enclave on the mostly Christian northern shore of Mindanao. It was only twenty-one miles northwest of the 2,300-foot (700 -meter)- high fertile plain surrounding Lake Lanao. The shores of lake lanao were the territory of the Maranaos, the "people of the Lake." Iligan had served for many years as the principal trading point for the peoples of the Lake Lanao with the Christian settlements of northern Mindanao and the Visayans. It had a mixed population of Christians, Chinese and Moros, but was regularly visited on market days by large numbers of Maranaos coming down from the lake."

Moroland 1899- 1906 . America's First Attempt to Transform an Islamic Society . Robert A. Fulton

A century later, Maranaos make the trip down the former Camp Keithley to Camp Overton road to enjoy Iligan's best attractions- Timoga and Gaisano Mall.

Has the City renamed Leonard wood st? I just hope it has not been changed. Gov. Wood played a significant role in the history of Iligan and the rest of the former Region XII provinces.
The post world war 2 iligan government should have erected a statue of Gen. John Pershing facing the old Rizal monument. His decision to initially base his 15th Cavalry in Old Iligan laid the foundation for development 10 years later.

ROXAS VISITS ILIGAN CITY TOMORROW, PROMOTES MINDANAO FREEPORT

Liberal President Senator Mar Roxas will be in Iligan City tomorrow to promote his new bill for a Mindanao freeport that would bring in investments and opportunities for Mindanaoans.

Roxas has filed Senate Bill No. 2580 that would create a Mindanao Special Economic Zone and Freeport, in order to foster development in the area amid the turmoil brought about by recent insurgencies and the uncertainty of the botched GRP-MILF Peace Panel Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain, which had threatened to include Iligan City and other LGUs as part of a Bangsamoro Juridical Entity separate from the Philippines.

"It's a good thing that the MoA has been discontinued, as the administration tells us. Even so, it has brought to light the great injustice in the standard of living of our brothers in the South, for which we must provide as much assistance as possible," he said.

The bill will give the entire Mindanao the same status as other freeports in the country such as in Subic and Clark, where businesses have perks including: income tax holiday, net operating loss carryover, and a 5% gross income tax in lieu of all other taxes except real estate taxes, among other incentives.

Tomorrow morning, Roxas will be at the inauguration of the new feed mill facility of Pilmico Foods Corp. held at the Pilmico Milling Complex, Kiwalan Cove, Dalipuga. Attending the event are Pilmico President and CEO Tony Moraza, Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz, as well as other local officials and businessmen.

"Iligan City is a great example of the private sector teaming with local governments in ensuring food security and a stable economic environment for their community," he said.

He praised Mayor Cruz for his ability to tap businesses to invest in the city and give additional opportunities to its citizens.

"While the nation is faced with a food crisis, Iligan City is finding ways to protect the livelihoods and maintain the productivity of its people. This is something that other LGUs can pick up ideas from for them to succeed as well," he said.

Roxas will also be visiting the evacuation center nearby which holds many thousands who have been forced to move as a result of the ongoing violence done by elements of the MILF.

"The suffering of the people shows the clear need for soldiers to provide sufficient security to make citizens feel safe. If our people feel secure, they won't feel the need to arm themselves, which leads to vigilantism, and more bloodshed," he said.

WOW! Kakabukas palang ng feedmill and now they'll be spending more to double its output

----------------------------------------------------------------

Fil-Am Foods to double feedmill output
By Othel V. Campos

Iligan City— Fil-Am Foods Inc., a unit of the Aboitiz group, plans to double the annual capacity of its P400-million Iligan plant to about 200,000 metric tons next year despite the low demand for animal feeds, company president Antonio Moraza said yesterday.

Fil-Am Foods, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Philippine Milling Co., will spend P150 million to expand the capacity of its Iligan plant.

Moraza said the capacity expansion would offset the scaledown of its Tarlac plant in Central Luzon, which is producing 230,000 MT per year. Tarlac will shortly reduce its output by 50 percent.

“Freight is costing us big time. Shipping feeds from our Luzon plant to Mindanao is really costly,” Moraza told reporters at a press briefing during the inauguration of the Iligan plant.

He said the feed milling company spent an average of P180 million annually for freight alone to move feeds from Luzon to Visayas and Mindanao.

The company said it aimed to earn as much as P7 million from its second feed mill during the first year of operations.

Moraza said the company’s feed milling operations in Mindanao would serve as a support system to government efforts to pursue pork trading with Singapore.

“We’re not part of the export team but we’ll make sure there would be enough feeds supply to back up the export potential of Mindanao,” he added.

Mindanao-based Matutum Meat Packing Plant Corp., a pork-processing company, has obtained accreditation from the Singapore government to bring in pork products.

The accreditation was approved on April 14 after the company satisfactorily met the requirements of the Singaporean sanitary authorities.

Pork exports would depend on the volume that Mindanao hog raisers could guarantee, said Moraza.

Fil-Am Foods commissioned the plant last week with commercial operations starting in Monday, said plant manager Rolando Pacquiao.

All systems go for Iligan City fiesta
by Lorry V. Gabule

ICC Iligan City (5 September) -- Despite ongoing police operation and military offensive against the lawless Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Groups, the enthusiasm of the people of Iligan City is not marred as they eagerly await the City Fiesta on September 29, in celebration of the feast of its Patron - St. Michael the Archangel.

This year's city fiesta will begin with a motorcade around the City streets on September 5, will be followed by the launching of the Diyandi Festival at the public plaza in Poblacion to add to the festive aura.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz said that although he is oblivious in commemorating the fiesta because of recent security threats in the City, there is still reason to celebrate the feast of the City's patron and ask for guidance.

He said the Diyandi is a cultural tradition every fiesta and is a dance ritual performed by an all-female group, the Higa-onons and the Lumad Iliganons, adding that the ritual depicts peaceful, symbolic union of the Maranao male and the Higa-onon female and also a depiction for bountiful harvest.

The Iligan City Tourism Office on the other hand announced that the other activities in line are the Pagpakanaug, which is the ritual transfer of the centuries-old San Miguel statue from its pedestal on the side of the main altar, to another pedestal for its yearly change of costume;

The procession, which is a parade of people in Higaonon, Diyandi, Devil and Angel costumes dancing and chanting the name of St. Michael in celebration of his triumph over the devil Lucifer;

And the Comedia, locally known as the "Yawa-Yawa", a traditional stage play first performed in 1890 depicting the victory of good over evil.

Mayor Cruz added that these activities will be witnessed by scores of devotees, tourists and balikbayans.

For his part, Lt. Col Agane Adriatico, spokesperson of the 1st Infantry Division, Philippine Army said with the security provided by the Special Action Force - Philippine National Police (SAF-PNP), the Iligan City PNP, and the military, he believes all activities lined up for this year's fiesta celebration will undoubtedly be peaceful, although he urges everyone to be vigilant always.

Aboitiz unit opens P400-million feed mill in Iligan (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW090608/content.php?id=043)
ILIGAN — Pilmico Foods Corp., a member of the Aboitiz Group, inaugurated here on Thursday a P400-million feed mill plant that will supply hog and poultry feeds to the livestock and poultry industry in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Antonio Moraza, Pilmico president, said shipping feeds from the company’s Capas, Tarlac plant to southern markets has become expensive lately. "Everybody knows that the price of oil has hit the roof. Freight costs are high. This facility will save us a lot of money," Mr. Moraza said, noting last month’s feeds produced in Tarlac and delivered to this city for distribution to nearby provinces have cost the company P15 million.

Pilmico executives said they can save up to 50% in transport costs with the new plant. The feed mill, which sits on a 2.25-hectare complex, is expected to produce 108,000 tons of animal feeds annually.

"We are using the latest technology from Dutch firm Ottevanger Milling Engineers B.V.," said Rolando Pacquaio, plant manager.

The new manufacturing facility harnesses four processes: dosing, grinding or mixing, pelleting, and bagging or packing. Computers read data on the percentages of ingredients mixed, making the job easier.

Fil-am Foods, Inc., a subsidiary of Pilmico, is providing technical assistance in running the new facility and in marketing feeds.

Alma P.D. Jauhari, Fil-Am Foods spokeswoman, said her firm’s laboratory will be responsible for quality control of Pilmico products. "We check the ingredients, we do the analysis and evaluation of 23 ingredients in a formula," Ms. Jauhari said. Some of the ingredients are grains, cassava and coconut oil.

During the plant’s inauguration, Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz said that despite recent attacks by Moro rebels in towns surrounding the city, visitors have kept on arriving.

Iligan City hosts over a dozen large manufacturing firms and is part of the 50-mile long industrial belt in Northern Mindanao that covers Cagayan de Oro City as well as the towns of Tagoloan and Villanueva in Misamis Oriental where state-led Phividec industrial estate is located. — Penny Lyn P. Pilmico forecasts 10% revenue growth this yr (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=200809058&type=2)

Saturday, September 6, 2008

DALIPUGA, Lanao del Norte — Pilmico Foods Corp. (PFC) expects its flour milling business to grow 10 percent to P5 billion this year, Antonio Moraza, president and chief executive officer of the company said yesterday.

Moraza made the optimistic forecast despite a 10-percent to 15-percent drop in demand due to the high cost of importing wheat which is the primary input in the production of flour.

Moraza believes the slump in demand is seasonal and that demand would pick up as the holiday approaches.

Pilmico produces several brands of soft and hard flour.

Its hard wheat flour, also known as bread flour, is sold under the following brands: Sun-Moon-Star, Glowing Sun, Wooden Spoon, Sunshine and Kutitap.

Its soft wheat flour is marketed under the brands Wooden Spoon cake flour, Gold Star and Megastar.

It also produces and sells so-called siopao flour under the brand Wooden Spoon.

Other wheat-related products include wheat germ and wheat flour sold under the Wooden Spoon brand.

Aside from flour, Pilmico produces high-grade base feeds which is a by-product of its flour milling process.

Moraza said Pilmico, controls about 16 percent of the flour market, pretty close to San Miguel Corp. which holds 17 percent to 18 percent.

Pilmico also produces animal feeds. It inaugurated this week a P400-million feed mill facility in Davao to service its customes in the Visayas and Mindanao region. – Marianne Go

Iligan City mill to cover Vis-Min feed market

By Cris Evert Lato
Cebu Daily News
First Posted 07:55:00 09/06/2008

Poultry, cattle and hog raisers in the Visayas and Mindanao are assured of a stable feed supply with the presence of a P400-million feed mill in Iligan City.

Fil-Am Foods vice president Hendel Cabral said Cebu province, which accounts for 15 percent of the Vis-Min market, will benefit most from the feed mill owned by Pilmico Foods Corp. (PFC).

Fil-Am Foods Inc. is a subsidiary of PFC, which produces commercial feeds for its company through its milling facility in Kiwalan Cove, Iligan City in Lanao del Norte.

The Iligan feed mill is the first Pilmico facility outside of Luzon.

PFC president Antonio Moraza said their mill facility in Capas, Tarlac, produces animal feeds that are shipped to different distributors throughout the country.

However, rising freight costs convinced them to open the Iligan feed mill.

Cabral said the company chose to open the Iligan facility after the Vis-Min market gained a strong distribution sector.

“From the period we opened the Iligan milling complex, we waited for some time until our market (for feeds) grow a bit. We would have wanted to open it earlier but there are factors we need to consider also,” he said.

Since the feed mill is now closer to Cebu and the rest of the provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao, delivery and transport will be easier and more efficient.

This will benefit the company and the distributors, he said.

The new feed mill will produce hog and poultry feeds. PFC produces animal feeds as by-product of it flour milling operations,

In a press statement, PFC said site development of the feed mill started in June 2007. Operations will start this month.

PFC also noted that fresh feeds will always be available to serve the needs of the Vis-Min market.

“(It is also an) economic gain for the region with better access to advanced animal feeds, (and) more efficient growth and development in terms of trade and commerce,” the company said.

Dutch firm Ottevanger Milling Engineers B.V. will supply, install and commission the equipment in the feed mill.

PFC said Ottevanger specializes in the design and manufacture of equipment and complete plants for grain processing and feed industry.

“Pilmico expects to benefit from this project due to the operational synergies the feed milling plant will share with the flour milling infrastructure already in place,” the company said.

Sinfully Delicious

Of all the 7 deadly sins that we mere mortals often commit, LUXURIA (Lust) used to be my sin of choice, but lately my current favorite is GULA (Gluttony). In our world of over indulgence and excess, there are two things that I cannot control myself from craving for. It used to be my little secret which I now want everyone to know why I am a very sinful person.

Cream Puffs and Silvanas from Michelle's are the two things that make me a sinner. I always end up having more than I can handle. It is sinfully delicious.

Their cream Puff is made of puff pastry with custard cream filling topped with butter scotch, while Silvana is cashew wafer with creamy butter icing rolled in buttercake crumbs.

Add a sprinkle of their secret ingredient and you get a different experience. These desserts go well with Vanilla ice cream! Trust me; I do it all the time.

So sinners let us go forth and sin once more. INDULGE in these treats.
