WOW!, I was indeed looking for this photo.

As I have stated in my previous post, me and three of my brothers after me were born on this clinic. In fact my parents took the name Anthony as my youngest brother's second name, in reverence to the clinic's namesake. Of all structures in Iligan, this St. Anthony's Maternity Clinic, holds the most special spot in my heart.

Thanks swooshkidjm for posting this photo. I'm just wondering, when was this photo taken? Does the structure appears (the structure's paint color, etc...) the same today as it is in this picture?

I see.

I asked because, if you look at the photo below, the wooden building painted in mint green on the left side, it is also the St. Anthony's Maternity Clinic. Apparently, the photo was taken from a farther distance and from an opposite direction to that of swooshkidjm's photo. It seemed weird, perhaps by coincidence, you can notice that the same old red jeep parked on the front of the clinic appears in both photos :). I was just wondering whose photo is the latest shot.

Caffeine Rush
joiedevivre

A group of coffee lovers flirted with the idea of opening a coffee shop in Iligan City. It has been a dream of theirs to come up with something new to offer to the Iligan public.

A venue for people to relax, hang out, socialize, rub elbows with and just see time pass by. The dream finally became reality. ARUMA Coffee Lounge finally opened on December 15, 2007. The name ARUMA comes from the English word aroma pronounced in "bisaya" accent.

The interiors are very Zen-like. Everything you see is white which makes it unique and exceptionally different from the usual coffee shops. The modest approach in design is very relaxing to your senses, creating a cozy ambiance.

2 pasta dishes got me hooked: Chicken Pesto and Aruma Pasta are my favorites. Pasta goes well with Chilly White Mocca Frap. The very light Chicken Oriental Salad is good for those who are on a diet while Banofee Pie must never be missed by dessert lovers.

Opening a coffee shop in Iligan was a big risk for the brave entrepreneurs, but good thing they did. It was a good choice. Aruma has carved its niche in the coffee shop business. KUDOS!

Mahogany Hills
joiedevivre

An undeveloped inherited parcel of land form her parents inspired Tita Mae to transform it into something productive. Her endless ideas on how to beautify the place and yet preserve the terrain paved the way for the development of the property.

At first it was intended to be planted with whatever plants, vegetables and fruit bearing trees or raise tilapia for consumption. Activity in Kaplag started with planting of mahogany trees all over the land spearheaded by Tita Mae thus the name MAHOGANY HILLS.

A small bamboo house was built for family to rest and bond. The usual Sunday get together. What was intended as fish pond for tilapia raising was then converted to a swimming pool for the grand children to enjoy.

Then friends were asking if they can hold seminars, retreats or any small parties. This made them decide to finally open the property for business.

Mahogany Hills is now the location of choice for people who want to party with utmost privacy. It has become an alternative place for garden weddings. Being away from the hustle and bustle of the city makes it a perfect choice for such an event.

Upon entering the gates you get the feeling of being in a rain forest because of the lush vegetation- assorted array of tropical ornamental plants, fruit bearing trees and of course the majestic mahoganies all over the area, all of which were landscaped by Tita Mae and her son Jose Manolo. A natural spring can also be found flowing freely adding up to the beauty of the terrain.

The serenity of the place makes it an ideal venue for retreats and reflection.

Floating Bazaar

http://www.geocities.com/spectrumarchive4/expo71.jpg

Remember the Expo vessels of the 60s and 70s? Those were the floating bazaars that sailed around the country on board a huge navy ship (in photo). The Expo ship would dock in Iligan about once a year offering various dry goods and foodstuffs for sale at bargain prices. The products came from different regions in the country. Among the favorite items at these floating bazaars were peanut butter and kalamay, one of Bohol's famous delicacies.

^^Ang galing sana kung maibalik ang ganitong floating bazaar. Kumbaga Expo 2008 featuring lahat ng mga OTOP ng ibat-ibang reheyon.

It's not a city yet. :nuts:Medyo matagal na yong proposal to convert it into a city. People in the area are divided regarding that issue. Farmers, workers, etc. doesnt like the idea since the tax for them will be higher once Tubod becomes a city. My grandparents is living there and my mom goes there from time to time.

Pilmico forecasts 10% revenue growth this yr (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=200809058&type=2)

Saturday, September 6, 2008

DALIPUGA, Lanao del Norte — Pilmico Foods Corp. (PFC) expects its flour milling business to grow 10 percent to P5 billion this year, Antonio Moraza, president and chief executive officer of the company said yesterday.

Moraza made the optimistic forecast despite a 10-percent to 15-percent drop in demand due to the high cost of importing wheat which is the primary input in the production of flour.

Moraza believes the slump in demand is seasonal and that demand would pick up as the holiday approaches.

Pilmico produces several brands of soft and hard flour.

Its hard wheat flour, also known as bread flour, is sold under the following brands: Sun-Moon-Star, Glowing Sun, Wooden Spoon, Sunshine and Kutitap.

Its soft wheat flour is marketed under the brands Wooden Spoon cake flour, Gold Star and Megastar.

It also produces and sells so-called siopao flour under the brand Wooden Spoon.

Other wheat-related products include wheat germ and wheat flour sold under the Wooden Spoon brand.

Aside from flour, Pilmico produces high-grade base feeds which is a by-product of its flour milling process.

Moraza said Pilmico, controls about 16 percent of the flour market, pretty close to San Miguel Corp. which holds 17 percent to 18 percent.

Pilmico also produces animal feeds. It inaugurated this week a P400-million feed mill facility in Davao to service its customes in the Visayas and Mindanao region. – Marianne Go

PAL to offer flights to and from Iligan

Philippine Airlines (PAL) will operate the Manila-Iligan and Cebu-Iligan routes next month through 76-seater planes under low-cost brand PAL Express.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz said last week PAL would again be active at the nearby Baloi Airport, with flights tentatively scheduled to start on Sept. 27.

Domingo Duerme, PAL senior assistant vice-president for Mindanao sales, said the airline would fly up to four times a week from Iligan City to Manila. The Cebu-Iligan route will have three flights weekly. A 50-seater Bombardier Quiet (Q300) jet propeller will fly the Cebu-Iligan route, while a Q400 will operate in the Manila-Iligan route. At present, passengers going to Manila and Cebu have to come in this city first.

Mindanao provinces and cities west of this city, including Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur and Marawi City, make up a significant market not only for airline but also for shipping companies.

Most ferries from Northern Mindanao, including this city’s port, going to Cebu and Manila pass by the port of Iligan to pick up passengers from northwestern provinces of Mindanao.

Iligan City has been served for years by the Maria Cristina Airport, but PAL stopped flights of its less-efficient Fokker and Sunriser planes due to increasing costs and low passenger and cargo traffic.

Iligan is among the most important ports of Mindanao, hosting at least a dozen large manufacturing plants. The city has a population close to 400,000 people. — Geefe P. Alba, BusinessWorld

usually new destinations are already incorporated in the online booking facility of PAL at least a month before. Until now Iligan is not yet included there. It is really possible that the initial announcement will not push thru due to some reasons like: maybe the new planes PAL ordered cannot be delivered on time, maybe security measures in the airport are still to be assessed, etc.

But still I pray mapush thru this september para makapamiesta ko sa Iligan. he he he:)

Pilmico gives P500T to Iligan CIty's education program
Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews
Friday, 12 September 2008 21:08

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews / September 12) — The Aboitiz-owned flour milling Pilmico Foods Corp. donated P500,000 to the city’s task force on education, to help the city lift the poor performance of its education sector.

“It’s a miracle! Somebody believes in our cause,” said Iligan city mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz, after he signed the deed of donation last Monday.

The Pilmico Foods Corp. donated the money to Task Force 47-74+1, a multi-sectoral movement here to reverse the down trend of the passing rate of pupils in the National Achievement Test (NAT).

The deed of donation stipulated that the “amount is intended for the reproduction of workbooks for grade six pupils which is academically eyed as a tool for the enhancement of their analytical and comprehensive skills”.

“We’re indeed very concern on the low performance of our children. This is a difficult task to accomplish without the benevolent involvement of education stakeholders,” said Reano Gumalo, vice president of the Cebu-based flour milling company.

Gumalo signed the deed of donation for the company. Iligan City schools division superintendent Domingo Samson also signed it. The signing was held September 8.

“We hope that our donation could help improve the learning capabilities of our pupils and may the workbooks hone the reading and analytical skills of pupils; increase their level of comprehension competencies and effectiveness as well as their literacy,” he added.

He also hoped that “the Department of Education, teachers, and the city government continue to exert their best efforts to produce better leaders” and assured that they were “one in this daunting task to increase the National Achievement Test (NAT) score of our students in 2009.”

Last year, pupils of the city got an average of only 47 percent in the NAT, way far below the passing rate of 75 percent. It increased to only 49 percent this year.

Dr. Rhodora N. Ingles, vice chairperson of Task Force 4774+1, explained said that the workbooks to be reproduced “is an output of a 17-day training of elementary teachers and supervisor in Manila with the assistance of Ateneo Center of Education Development (ACED)”.

“These books will be distributed to pupils and they could bring this in their respective homes for after-school studies,” she added.

Adelina delos Reyes, education supervisor and a member of Task Force 47-74+1 said “these workbooks will benefit some 2,000 Grade Six pupils in 20 pilot schools”.

Mayor Cruz hoped that “other companies will also and help improve the local educational system.”

“Indeed, P500,000 is such an extra-ordinary amount and it’s very rare among corporations to give such amount,” Cruz said adding that “we will ensure that each cent counts to uplift our education.”

“We’ve been way down there,” said the mayor, referring to the failing average of pupils in NAT examination, “and there is no way for us to go but up.”

Domingo Samson, schools division superintendent of Iligan city, thanked the company and disclosed the implementation of reforms “within the institution to stop the scandalous practices of selling teachers’ items done by some officials within DepEd of Iligan”.

“Iligan city has the brightest schools and universities but our low average in the National Achievement Test (NAT) for the past two years could have been caused by low morale of teachers… They have low morale because several of them are teaching after buying their item,” he stressed.

Joel Pagsanghan of Task Force 5775 based in Manila that pioneered the effort for improved performance of students, said he was elated with the local movement and described it as “genuinely multi-sectoral in character, with equally strong participation from the DepEd, local government unit, academe and civil society”.

Can anyone please provide me with the lyrics for Iliganon nga buotan.

It would also help if we could get a link to this song.

Thanks!

BUOTAN NGA ILIGANON

I

Ang tanan nangahanaw
Sa pagsakop sa adlaw
May usa nga nagpakita

II

Sa layo may misidlak
Bulawanong kahayag
Bu-otan nga Iliganon

III

Ikaw ang Iliganon nga Bu-otan
Nagpakita ka sa imong kaanyag
Dad-a ang maayong pamatasan
Kay aron ikaw mabulahan

IV

Aron I-uban sa atong mga damgo
Gihigugma ko ikaw

IPAG opens 31st season with landmark productions (http://www.philstar.com/archives.php?aid=20080912192&type=2)
Saturday, September 13, 2008

The Iligan City-based Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), acknowledged a leading region-based theatre in the country, highlights its 31st Season with landmark productions in and out of its base at the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology.

Ranaw: Isang Alamat, a winner in the playwriting contest of the Cultural Center of the Philippines, premieres this month celebrating the Ruby Jubilees of the CCP and the MSU-IIT. This dance-music play about epic hero Bato Lakungan presents our pre-colonial tribes in turmoil, a condition that prophesies our fragmented state today.

IPAG’s long-running Tales From Mindanao is on its 1st leg this season of a national tour of Manila schools which road shows shall run until March next year. In the last 17 years, Tales has played to full houses captivating large audiences here and in over a hundred cities worldwide. This leg includes performances at the Crossroads Theatre, Xavier School, La Salle Zobel, Southville, and the University of Asia and the Pacific. It hits Davao and Cagayan de Oro Cities next.

Celebrating the National Arts Month in February 2009, Pop and Poetry transcreates and popularizes the poems of Southern Philippine writers using the pop mediums of dance and music. Included are the works of Christine Godinez-Ortega, Ralph Galan, Henry Opulencia, Anthony Tan, German Gervacio, and Marge Evasco. “Origami,” a transcreation of the eponymous Marjorie Evasco poem, previewed at the opening of the 15th Iligan National Writers Workshop last May 26.

Ranaw goes onstage starting Sept. 12 until the 20th (three shows: 10:00 a.m., 2:30 p.m., and 7:30 p.m.) at the MSU-IIT Mini-Theatre, Iligan City. Steven P.C. Fernandez directs from his script and original music. Choreography is by Melvin Pascubillo and Leilani M. Fernandez.

Other on-the-road productions Tatlo sa Isa, MingMing, and Bak2Bak will continue performing here and abroad this season. Tales is also set for performances in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam in October 2 before flying to the U.S. for a series of shows until November.

The National Commission for Culture and the Arts, MSU-IIT, Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corporation, and Super Ferry supports the IPAG season.

942 pass PMA entrance exams

A TOTAL of 942 young individuals are awaiting entry to Asia's premiere military institution, after successfully passing the entrance examinations held August 31 this year.

Major Darren Comia, director of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) office of cadet admission, said Baguio City obtained the highest passing rate at 27 percent with total passers reaching 133.

From those who passed the PMA entrance examinations, 267 were females while 675 were males. A total of 8,449 applied for the entrance examinations, but only 5,652 qualified.

Those who passed the test would still undergo rigorous medical and dental examinations and physical trainings.

This year's PMA entrance examinations, Comia said, was well participated, adding that almost all areas in the country had examinees. There were 30 testing centers distributed in various regions in the country.

Next to Baguio, Quezon City got the highest passing rate of 26 percent while Manila obtained 25-percent passing rate. In Mindanao, Iligan had a passing rate of 26 percent.

Comia said this year's passers were two percent higher than last year, which was posted at 16 percent.

The number of examination participants had been growing over the past years, Comia said.

"In Iligan City, the City Council passed a resolution requesting the National Power Corporation to reopen the Maria Cristina Falls for the public and especially the tourist to see the falls in its entire “majestic splendor.” When one go to visit Maria Cristina Falls, he will not get to see the cascades because it has been directed for the NPC’s hydroelectric plant. By appointment and through scheduling, it is allowed to cascade naturally for viewer’s satisfaction and it also has a viewing deck.
:okay:
Councilor Orlando Maglinao said this request is made in time for the celebration of the city’s fiesta."

Lechon and Hanging Rice
by joiedevivre

Me and my 4 close friends decided to relive our high school days of merry eating. All of us now happy individuals in our respective careers headed off to our much loved seaside restaurant, Gloria Ihaw-Ihaw in Barangay Buru-un.

It was nice to see all of them again gathered under one roof. Laurence the former fatso, Beetle the high school crush ng bayan, Tiburcio the Superman and of course Criste the mega bitch. We all gathered for one reason, to once again savor the cholesterol rich, mouth-watering & yummy world famous Iligan Lechon.

We ordered 2 kilos paired with fresh fish kinilaw and 20 pieces of hanging rice. The lechon skin was very crispy and had the right salty taste while the meat was tender and juicy. Mouth-watering! We gobbled everything in record time of less than 20 minutes.

The kinilaw which was spiced with the local "sili" was too hot for me, so I didn't dare eat it, besides raw fish is bad for me because of my ever present not so friendly "amoeba" in my GI Tract. Eating it would spell disaster.

We had a great laugh, sharing high school stories. We were so full. Total bill was 985, taken cared of by a generous batchmate. See you again next time batch 90.

Both Iligan and its mayor did well

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:08:00 09/16/2008

This is a reaction to Rina Jimenez-David’s Sept. 3 column, in which she said that “Iligan City, whose mayor has fanned the flames of paranoia and has said that citizens have the right to arm themselves against ‘attackers,’ is today a ghost town, recounted my friend Yasmin Busran-Lao. There was almost nobody in the streets and shops were closed. Someone told me that Iligan businesses have been losing millions each day.”

David gave the impression that our Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz is a war freak and an anti-Muslim. Let me correct that. Given the limited resources of the city and the tremendous pressure he was in, he did quite well during that critical period.

Lacs Dalidig, a leader among the Muslims in my city, can attest that Mayor Cruz consulted him on matters pertaining to the safety and security of the Muslim population in Iligan during those critical times.

Mayor Cruz was misquoted on the Iliganons’ right to arm themselves against attackers. What he said was that “people have the right to defend their homes and the city against attackers or intruders.” Won’t David also defend her home and family if somebody intrudes into her house? Last Aug. 30, Mayor Cruz even spearheaded the organizing of the Peace Covenant among the Muslims and Christians in our city. In due time, the benefits of that covenant will show that our mayor is peace-loving.

Any mayor worth his salt would surely defend the territorial integrity of his city, especially if his constituency is amenable to the conditions being offered. He should not be faulted for voicing the sentiments of the majority.

Iligan is home to mayors of no less than 20 towns of Lanao del Sur. If they feel that our mayor is an “enemy,” they would not make their abodes here. And Mayor Cruz consults these mayors every now and then. I think he is doing a good job, considering that they still live in Iligan.

I agree with my classmate Yasmin Busran-Lao that Iligan did suffer economic losses, but it is not a “ghost town.” People are still very much around, safe in their homes. They are not leaving Iligan. Business is normal in our city.

By the first quarter of next year our first mall in the city will open. Gaisano Mall-Iligan will be a landmark in Lanao, one of the most modern malls in Mindanao.

Iligan is a blessed city just like Marawi. In due time, our local government will come up with laws and measures that will strengthen the ties between Muslims and Christians. The Peace Covenant between Muslims and Christians is a good start. Iligan will emerge from this conflict stronger and better. Let us continue to pray for the peace of the Lanao provinces and the twin cities of Marawi and Iligan. Take note we are twins—that has always been our history and our relationship. God bless Iligan and Marawi. God bless Lanao. God bless the Philippines!!

Iligan’s Story of Hope

Pilmico Foods Corporation, a member of the Aboitiz Group of Companies, gave a grant of P500,000 to Task Force 47 - 74+1, a multi-sectoral movement in Iligan working to reverse the education crisis in its area.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3248/2862445528_b7d1cababc_m.jpg

Filled with gratitude, Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz expressed much happiness over the grant, which is intended for the production of workbooks for grade six pupils in order to enhance analytical and comprehensive skills. (Mayor Cruz himself was the one who renamed their education campaign “47 – 74+1” in response to their 47% National Achievement Test (NAT) average in 2007. Now, Iligan’s NAT average stands at 49%)

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3238/2862444644_6cc8f88489_m.jpg

Signing of the Deed of Donation was done last 7 September by Mayor Cruz, Pilmico VP for Operations Reano Gumalo and DepEd Schools Division Superintendent Domingo Samson.

Gumalo said that Pilmico is “indeed very concerned over the low performance of our children. (Improving their academic performance) is a difficult task to accomplish without the benevolent involvement of education stakeholders.” Pilmico has been exercising their corporate social responsibility in Iligan by donating school buildings, computers, and books.

He added, “We hope that our donation could help improve the learning capabilities of our pupils and may the workbooks hone the reading and analytical skills of pupils, and increase their level of comprehension competencies and effectiveness as well as their literacy.”

Gumalo prayed that “the Department of Education, teachers, and the city government continue to exert their best efforts to produce better leaders” and emphasized that they are “one in this daunting task to increase the NAT score of our students in 2009.”

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3185/2861614429_219592c2aa_m.jpg

Dr. Rhodora N. Englis, vice chairperson of Task Force 47 - 74+1, explained that the workbooks to be produced is an output of a 17-day training of elementary teachers and supervisor in Manila with the assistance of the Ateneo Center for Education Development (ACED).

“These books will be distributed to pupils and they could bring this to their respective homes for after-school studies,” she added.

Adelina delos Reyes, education supervisor and a member of Task Force 47 - 74+1, said that these workbooks will benefit some 2,000 grade six pupils in 20 piloted schools.

Mayor Cruz hopes that other companies will also help improve the local educational system. “Indeed, P500,000 is such an extraordinary amount – we will ensure that each centavo counts towards uplifting our education.”

He adds, “We’ve been way down there,” apparently referring to the failing average of pupils in NAT examination, “and there is no way for us to go but up.”

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3155/2862444954_9027b85ba1_m.jpg

Domingo Samson, schools division superintendent of Iligan City, was also very thankful, even saying that “today is a celebration of love”.

He also said that as part of ensuring better and quality education, he is instituting reforms within DepEd Iligan by promoting good governance and finding ways to improve working conditions of the teachers.

“Iligan City has the brightest schools and universities but our low average in the NAT for the past two years could also be partly attributed to the low morale of teachers,” Domingo added.

Joel Pagsanghan of the National Task Force, in his inspirational message emailed from Manila, expressed pride over the genuinely multi-sectoral local movement, with equally strong participation from the DepEd, local government unit, academe and civil society. He added that the assistance of Pilmico “will make a difference in peoples’ lives.”

RAMPA ng RAMPA ang BEAUTIES
Posted by joiedevivre

The fiesta season is in full swing. The streets are filled with colorful decorations. Everyone is busy doing their part in making the month of September festive. But the busiest ones are the candidates for the much coveted Ms. Iligan crown.

I am fortunate to be friends with the pageant organizers with full access to the venue where they were practicing. There were 15 official candidates but 3 backed out so they were left with 12 beautiful ones. Most of the girls are college students and I spotted three whom I liked, they were like amazons.

I saw them doing RAMPA walk under the tutelage of the choreographer. 5, 6, 7, 8 GO!

They reminded me of myself doing my grocery in the new gaisano mall, possessed by the idea that I am supermodel Giselle Bundchen so " rampa ako ng rampa " doing my shopping. Not minding the surprised stares of the passersby.

The girls were good and friendly. The tallest was 5'9". She is very model-like, her face could launch a thousand ships. If given the right break and exposure she can make it big in the manila modeling circuit.

The girl in pink blouse was a very good walker. I forgot her name but I really like her because she is very playful on stage and she makes you stare at her. Naomi Campbell on the runway!

This other girl in white sleeveless top is sooooo EXOTIC. She reminded me of a young Tetchie Agbayani. She has a well proportioned body. Petite but okay. Nakaka LOKA ang mga girls!

I wanted to jump off my seat and join them in the RAMPA walk for the finale but maybe some other time. Perhaps during the pageant night itself. Hahahahahaha! I wish!

Water is a very essential thing to all of us. Too little creates a desert, too much a flood. Only in the right proportions does it give life. The cold spring in Timoga has always been a source of pride and joy for us Iliganons. Every time we have visitors we always make it a point to bring them there, for them to see the beauty of the cold springs and let them experience its refreshing waters as they take a dip.

There are several pools to choose from. Some are big, others are small. It all depends on what kind of ambiance you want. I for one prefer the small pools for you can have intimate private moments with your friends and family. It gives you the feeling that you "own" the place.

The pools are drained every night to allow the maintenance crew to clean up the debris, therefore you are guaranteed of a clean pool the following day.

It is best to go there on weekdays for weekends can be jam packed with out-of-towners and locals alike.

Dive into its cold waters. Experience Timoga Spring Pools!

High paying jobs, is what Iligan City needs, such as BPOs for it to grow fast just like what happened to Cebu na ni boom ug maayo. The population of the BPO business is mostly fresh graduates , young professionals, and we can see some 40-50s na people.

This people has the money due to high salary and they really love to spend!!! ^^
1. has the capability and loves to travel to relieve stress:  (business concern: travel: land, air, and sea, tourist spots
2. capability to buy new gadgets which is a luxury and not a necessity:  (business concerned: cellphone shops, department stores, gaming shops, malls, SLR camera)
3.this people work at night (business concerned: halin kaayo ang taxi, jeep might be 24 hrs na, halin ang mga cars business)
4. stressful ang work (business concerned: spa, massage clinics, )
5. always on the go and hungry ( business concerned: fastfoods, coffee shops, bakery, carenderia and other food and drink business)
6. BPOs require no uniform: (business concerned: ukay2x, clothing stores, shoe store, sandalsand bag stores)
7. during day-off people wants to enjoy (business concerned: bars, spas, tourist spots, travel, and almost all business concern
8. BPO people gains extra weight due to work lifestyle working at night and the habit eat-sleep-work-eat-eat-work-eat-eat-work-off sa work-eat after work then sleep, (business concerned: gyms, beauty clinics, sports center)

additional Information: funny but true

9. BPO people during breaks, mostly mag smoke, lack of sleep because cannot sleep during daytime, unhealthy lifestyle so prone to sickness (business concerned: hospitals, doctors, clinics, cigar vendors)
10. BPO people sleep at night ( so hot to sleep during daytime, business concerned: airconditioning units store,
11. They work at night( so lingaw mga hold-uper, hehehe, business concerned: needs police visibility around the the workplace and the city during nightime, so additional police workforce, jobs for them

so almost all business will be greatly affected positively because of this BPO business.

Nightlife continues undisturbed in Iligan - PNP (http://www.pia.gov.ph/default.asp?m=12&fi=p080918.htm&no=23)
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

ICC Iligan City (18 September) -- Iligan City is very peaceful. In fact, nightlife in the city continues undisturbed, even as the month-long activities lined up for the celebration of the annual town fiesta on Sept. 29th are being observed by the residents.

This is the assurance of P/Chief Supt. Arniel Catarata, Chief of Operations, Intelligence and Investigation Division of the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) who said the negative write up on the peace and order situation of the city is just a mere disinformation campaign by some groups that takes advantage of the rampage of the lawless MILF groups (LMG).

"The LMG is only confined to the hinterlands at the boundary of Lanao Del Norte and Lanao Del Sur, and so far, there are troops of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), particularly, the Philippine Army, who are scouring the area even as they provide the blocking force so the LMG cannot enter the city.

Meanwhile, he said ICPO is continuously conducting a more serious monitoring of the areas where relatives of the LMGs are residing in the city in addition to what they do in all its hotels, inns, lodgings and other suspected safe houses of the LMG in the city.

"We have also organized the village leaders of areas here which are known to be populated by friends of the LMG to call and inform ICPO immediately of the presence of any suspicious persons who may visit their areas," Catarata said.

So far, they have promised never to allow any of the LMG elements to enter their subdivisions saying they have been living in the city for a long time, that many of their children have finished their studies here peacefully and that they would like the condition to remain so.

"The village leaders said they will also continue to maintain an open line of communication with the ICPO to report the presence of any suspicious person in their areas," Catarata added. (PIA-10)

If I remember correctly, there was once a forumer from iligan who doesn't like these BPO's sprouting up in the Philippines as it is anti-development.

I don't know if he's seeing what you're saying.

Well, if you ask further, it was my post at the developmental issues thread ata. There's nothing wrong with sprouting up of BPOs which are an uplift to the middle class pinoys. That issue pertains to an outlook of a British national whom i got befriended once in YM and told about third world countries being a dumping ground for multinational companies who are looking for cheap labor which in this case is the BPOs in the third world countries. In their country their labor code does not allow companies to pay workers lower than the minimum. And since the labor sector there support the plight of their workers for a high pay, these companies outsource their services to third world countries where cheap labor is available. For me, there's nothing wrong with BPOs but seeing of what that foreigner sees, it is somehow ironic that these BPOs are luring us to work into BPOs to our supposed higher pays (coz to us their low wage is somewhat high to us) which they are actually paying at a lower one if compared to their first world country standards.

I was just asking for reactions regarding that outlook by the foreigner which I put myself into thinking that we are being dumped at by these companies for cheap labor although to our standards a minimum of 15,000 wage from them is already a big help for most of us.

When I read in a thread that one forumer was so proud to have an American BPO having a seating capacity bigger than all the US branches combined, I practically felt sorry upon knowing these dumping ground thing that is being done to us by multinational companies for their way of profiting from cheap labor.

Pero, on the brighter side, as this helps to most Pinoys, I have nothing against it. Its just putting into the knowledge to all of us the negative side of these BPOs that are sprouting everywhere in the country. Di ba? Ironic kaayo ni nga situation? I think almost all aspects man in the Pinoy daily life we are smiling but living in poverty? So this one adds into the bunch of ironies in the state of the Philippines.

But this is my opinion, and I respect opinions of others too. Anyway, that thread was merged to another thread in the economy and developmental issues.

Media 'guilty' in Mindanao reporting :bash:

CAGAYAN DE ORO -- A Couples for Christ (CFC) leader in Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte appealed to media Friday to confirm things before reporting them to avoid undue stress and panic among affected parties.

Flordeliza Saquin, CFC chapter leader, described how the sensational news reporting by journalists covering the raid by Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) rebels in Kolambugan last month affected innocent civilians.

Speaking before journalists gathered in Xavier University on Friday, Saguin said news reports especially those aired by radio stations in Iligan City caused panic among the residents instead of calming their fears.

"Tungod sa pagkadungog sa balita sa radyo ug pagkadungog sa mga buto-buto, ang katawhan natigaw, nanagan wa walay tumong, bisan og walay nakita nga mga armadong tawo (Upon hearing news over the radio, many of the residents fled even if there were no armed men)," Saguin narrated.

Around 40 journalists from Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Malaybalay and Ozamiz cities gathered in Xavier University to attend the media dialogue series dubbed "How can the media report Mindanao better?"

The dialogue between affected residents and journalists is the first attempt of the media in Mindanao to assess the way it covered the ongoing conflict between the government and the MILF.

Saguin, who was in her hometown in Kolambugan when the rebels attacked last month, said radio stations in Iligan City dished out unconfirmed news reports of MILF sightings so scary that her relatives who lived 15 kilometers away, fled to nearby Ozamiz City on pump boats.

Mass hysteria

"The radio reports created mass hysteria," Saquin told the journalists.

Saguin said her relatives, who feared for their safety, even sent a pump boat to bring them to Ozamiz City.

She said on that fateful morning of the MILF attack in Kolambugan last August 18, radio stations were reporting that the rebels have burned the town market and have committed pillage and raping women. Saguin said all of these news reports were not true.

Saguin said she, her husband and their family were inside the house all the while.

"Daghan nagtext nako ngano wala pa mi namakwit, nga sila gani tua na sa Ozamis (Many of our friends texted me, asking why we haven't fled yet when they are already in Ozamis)," she said.

Saguin lamented how the media missed the stories of how the Muslim residents braved the gunfire to bring some of their stranded Christian neighbors to the safety of their mosque in Kolambugan.

"Nindot usab nga mahibaloan sa kadaghanan nga panahon sa pag-atake sa MILF sa Poblacion sa Kolambogan, daghan gayud nga Kristiyano ang naprotektahan sa mga Muslim nga midepensa kanila. Kini gipasalamatan gayud sa mga naluwas nga mga Kristiyanong lumulupyo sa Poblacion (The public should know that during the attacks, many of the Christian residents were protected by their Muslim neighbors, and those who were saved really thanked them)," Saquin said.

"Busa, ako uban sa mga lumulupyo sa Kolambogan ug Lanao del Norte, mihangyo ug nanghinaut nga kon sa umaabot adunay mga panghitabo nga dili kasarangan, palihug ayaw itaho ang dili confirmed nga mga balita. Hinaut nga ang inyong mga balita mahimong giya pagpakalma ug makahatag og saktong lamdag sa katawhan (Along with residents from Kolambugan and Lanao del Norte, I asked the media to deliver only the confirmed news reports in case another incident occurs. The news reports should be truthful and help calm and guide the people)," she added.

Musa Sanguila, head of the Pakigdait alang sa Pag-amoma sa Kalinaw Inc. -- a non-government organization (NGO) -- narrated how radio reporters told that Fr. Regie Quijano, Kolambugan parish priest, was beheaded by the rebels who have also raped some nuns.

"The reports of beheading and rape were never true. Father Quijano was there in his parish church. There were no nuns that were raped," Sanguila said.

Sanguila said as they rushed to Kolambugan to check on Father Quijano, they came on a radio news reporter who reported that a vital bridge along the Iligan-Kolambugan highway have been blown up.

He said the news report was false.

Excesses

Jun Godoy, program supervisor of dxOC-Ozamis and chairman of the National Union of Journalist of the Philippines (NUJP) Ozamiz chapter, admitted journalists especially those from the radio committed "excesses" in their coverage of the MILF attack last August 18.

He blamed the penchant of radio stations to do everything to get ahead in the ratings, which spells more commercial ads and profits.

"Wala may maminaw sa radyo reporter nga dili sensational ang treatment sa balita (Nobody will listen to a reporter whose news isn't sensational)," Godoy said.

Godoy said the educational background of radio reporters also have something to do with the way they covered the conflict. He said many radio reporters lacked the necessary education to deeply appreciate real journalism.

"Kaming nasa radyo lahi ra gyud sa mga print journalists. Basta 'bedroom voice' dawat na dayon ka nga news radio anchor (Radio and print journalists are different. Those who have a 'bedroom voice' often get the job)," Godoy said.

Ritchel Umel, a freelance journalist, blamed the Manila-based media for capitalizing on the violence in Mindanao for profits.

Umel cited his story on how the Muslim residents in Tangkal town pleaded with the rebels to release their 64 hostages never saw print in a big Manila-based newspaper daily. He said the residents were able to persuade the rebels to release the hostages.

Red Batario, executive director of the Center for Community Journalists and Development (CCJD), said the dialogue is the first of such kind wherein journalists took stock with the way they reported the Mindanao conflict.

"The dialogue between the journalists and residents was heartening because we learned where we made mistakes. If we learn something in the dialogue is that journalists should not be part of the confusion but instead go back to its duty to correctly inform the public," he said.

CCJD partnered with NUJP, the International War and Peace Reporting, Mindanews, Sun.Star Cagayan de Oro and the Xavier University in holding the one-day dialogue on Friday.

Pagpakanaug
September 20, 2008
St. Michael's Cathedral

"Pagpakanaug" is the ritual lowering of St. Michael the Archangel (Iligan's Patron Saint), attended by devotees whose number grows yearly.

If you look closely in the video "Diyandi", another ritual is being performed by an all-female group outside the Cathedral during the Pagpakanaug, before every novena and before the start of the Komedya, or Comedia de San Miguel, a folk stage play depicting the celestial battle. The ritual depicts the courtship between a Maranao male and Higaonon female, and culminating into an offering symbolic of their union and bountiful harvest to St. Michael the Archangel. The ritual aptly decribes the peaceful co-existence of Iligan's tri-people -- Christians, Maranaos and Higaonons.

Globe’s exchange program focuses on youth

By Daxim Lucas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:01:00 09/21/2008

MANILA, Philippines—What business does a telecommunications firm have engaging in a corporate social responsibility that is far detached from its main business line?

For Globe Telecom Inc., the benefits of its financial support for the Global Xchange Program (GXP) are not immediately evident for these are long term in nature.

Recently, the Ayala-controlled firm strengthened its partnership with international volunteerism and advocacy groups resulting in another successful run of the program, with the stated goal of developing youths into active global citizens.

Now on its fourth year, the GXP volunteer exchange program gives both Filipino and British youths a unique opportunity to become better global citizens through learning, reflection, volunteerism and community action.

Globe, through its corporate social responsibility program Globe Bridging Communities (Globe BridgeCom), financially supported GXP as a “national kabahagi” making the company a major partner.

Globe also supported the program by providing SIM cards and load to volunteers and also by sharing ideas and expertise in community relations during the activity sessions.

International groups managing GXP include Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) Philippines, VSO Bahaginan and the British Council.

This year, a team of nine Filipinos and nine British youths were chosen to take part in the Iligan-Newham exchange. The volunteers went to the cities of Newham in the United Kingdon and Iligan, the Philippines for three months each, to live and work on global citizenship projects aimed at raising awareness of the development and diversity within their host communities.

According to Globe Community Relations head Jeffrey Tarayao, the Globe-GXP partnership provided an opportunity for Globe to have a better understanding of young people’s perspective of development at both national and international levels.

“The youth, as a very important stakeholder of Globe, must be offered every opportunity that will inspire and enable positive change in their own communities,” Tarayao said.

For Globe, these opportunities may be in the form of technology, skills development and collaboration—“three very important enablers that GXP offers to all its partners,” he added.

Tarayao said that since youth development is one of Globe BridgeCom’s cornerstone corporate social responsibility programs, the partnership with GXP offers the company an important model for engaging and involving young people of every age and race to work together—a crucial template for today’s sustainable youth development programs.

GXP also offers an international perspective of development work where other CSR programs of Globe can benefit from,” he said.

With the partnership of Globe and GXP, the telecommunication firm continues to reinforce the educational thrust of its CSR program, and initiating more youth development programs with GXP that aimed at increasing its positive impact to more young people and communities around the world.

Meanwhile, Globe gave a counterpart donation of P75,000 to complement Global Xchange Programme Team 71’s fund-raising efforts for displaced communities in Lanao del Norte due to the ongoing armed conflict in the region.

By supporting them in this endeavor, “we want to strengthen the volunteers’ passion for service and encourage them to be always active and relevant in any community they may be,” Tarayao said. “This essentially is what GXP is all about.”

The chosen conduit for Globe and GXP Team 71’s rehabilitation initiative for these communities is Balay Integrated Rehabilitation for Total Human Development Inc. (Birthdev), a nongovernment organization that specializes in psychosocial intervention to children, women and men survivors of armed conflict and disasters.

Their services include community and individual emotional recovery sessions, community education, capability-building activities to people’s organizations, educational assistance and research.

The organization is headed by executive director Cristina Lomoljo, a psychologist by profession and mentor of two of Team 71’s volunteers who were placed under her supervision.

The combined donation of P100,000 from Globe and Team 71 of the GXP will specifically be used to fund Birthdev’s on-going community trauma healing sessions where emotional recovery experts provide counseling and stress debriefing for members of the communities raided by Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels in several municipalities in Lanao del Norte, such as Kolambugan, Munai, Kauswagan, Linamon and Maigo.

GX Team 71 program supervisor Jay Neil Ancheta expressed his optimism that through this donation, Birthdev and other members of the Mindanao Emergency Relief Network who are skilled in emotional recovery and stress debriefing, would continue and step up their “much needed intervention” for these communities.

Iligan's 'Pagpakanaug' draws big crowd

by Lorry V. Gabule

ICC Iligan City (22 September) -- Despite ongoing pursuit of the government forces on the capture of the renegade leader Abdullah Macapaar alias Commander Bravo and rouge Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) group, some 10,000 devotees were not affected as they witnessed the "Pagpakanaug" of the San Miguel figure, Iligan's Patron Saint, held recently at the St. Michael's church, Iligan City in Mindanao.

The Pagpakanaug, which is held every 20th of September every eight in the morning, is the ritual transfer of the image of San Miguel from the main altar to the side altar for his bath and change of clothes.

This is conducted after a holy mass upon which devotees and city officials take over for the conduct of the ritual.

The Pagpakanaug is also the start of the first novena of the feast of the city's Patron Saint and the event has drawn devotees and visitors to essentially witness the traditional ritual where the City officials receive the saint's helmet, spear and shield.

P/CInsp. Arniel Catarata, Iligan City Police Office said that while it is true that the City is on high alert because of the atrocities in the neighboring province, we have proven that the Philippine National Police (PNP), together with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), and other forced multipliers have intensified the implementation of security measures, and that we reported a zero crime rate on the day of the event, said.

"Unlike the previous years, we had reports on petty crimes. We deployed our men a day before the activity and have sanitized the St. Michael church." He added.

He said that mobilizing the Task Force San Miguel, composed of 21 organizations, has indeed contributed to the peaceful and orderly celebration of one of the activities that highlight the feast of San Miguel on September 29. (PIA Iligan)

Transco assures power supply in Mindanao

by Dante E. Coloma

ICC Iligan City (22 September) -- The National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) is doing its best to maintain a continuous and reliable supply of power to the whole island of Mindanao. Transco has contingency plans in place, and initiates a set of standard operating procedures that would ensure continuous power service while its affected facilities are being restored.

This was stressed by Beth Ladaga, Transco Corporate Relations Officer, who assured the public that in the event of interruptions, Transco always aims to have power back up and running the soonest possible time.

Earlier today at dawn, strong winds and rains brought about by Typhoon "Nina" triggered the automatic tripping, or service interruption, of the Lugait-Tagoloan 138 kilovolt line in Mindanao, which supplies power to central, northeastern and southern parts of the island.

Power was restored a couple of hours later.

Meanwhile, two transmission towers were simultaneously attacked by lawless elements at 12:13 AM of September 21, 2008 in Barangay Lanipao, Iligan City. Tower 41 had all of its four columns strapped with explosives; only two exploded but were enough to topple the tower.

Meanwhile, Tower 39 had three of its columns strapped with IED but were not detonated.

All of the unexploded IED retrieved from both towers were safely defused by the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit.

The attacks also caused tripping, but Ladaga maintained that no customers were reported to have been affected during the incident.

Despite these challenges of foul weather and lawless elements, Ladaga emphasized that Transco remains true to its mandate of providing continuous and reliable power.

She further said that linemen and hired laborers are currently undergoing restoration to facilitate immediate energization of the affected line.

Ladaga also cited the agency's close coordination between the AFP, PNP, as well as the support of local government officials in the municipalities and barangays hosting the transmission lines, for ensuring the towers' safety and providing immediate feedback on the status of their towers. RP receives development aid for urban areas
09/22/2008

MANILA, Philippines - The Cities Alliance, a Global Partnership Program housed in the World Bank, is extending technical assistance to cities in the Philippines to help improve governance and delivery of social services in urban areas, Bert Hofman, WB country director for the Philippines revealed on Monday.

In a grant agreement signed on September 15, 2008, the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) will receive $169,000 for three activities:

• A review of the City Development Strategy (CDS) program. The study will draw lessons from the implementation of the CDS program that could be used to improve local governance and strengthen the performance of cities.
• A documentation of an innovative shelter management program by Marikina City which has successfully housed its poor residents.
• The publication of the State of Philippine Cities Report that will serve as basis for project design, policy formulation and further assistance to cities from their development partners.

The financial grant to the LCP, according to Hofman, is part of the World Bank’s continuing efforts to help the Philippines, a middle income country, achieve pro-poor growth and development.

“More than half of the Philippine population resides in urban area and about 14 percent are poor. Beefing up the capability of city executives and managers to meet people’s needs for social services and infrastructure therefore offers vast opportunities for poverty reduction," he said.

“The State of Philippine Cities Report can be used as yardstick for competition in performance between and among cities in the country," added Mandaluyong Mayor Benjamin C. Abalos Jr., President of the LCP, who signed the grant agreement on behalf of the LCP.

The Cities Alliance is a global coalition of cities and their development partners committed to scaling up successful LGU approaches to poverty reduction. The Cities Alliance supports cities in two key areas: the preparation of City Development Strategies (CDS) and citywide and nationwide slum upgrading programs.

The CDS is a participatory planning tool that aims to assist cities address the pressures of rapid urbanization including congestion and rising demand for basic urban services like transport, shelter, water, sanitation and health services, among others.

In 1998, the World Bank and the mayors of several cities in the Philippines launched the first phase of the CDS Program. After eight years, three CDS phases have been implemented.

In addition to the CDS programs, a project preparation grant from the Japanese Government supported a number of cities in preparing city strategies and project feasibility studies. In all, more than 60 cities have participated in the CDS activities.

Through the CDS process, the cities have generated more than 500 priority programs and projects, primarily in infrastructure (30 percent), environment (14 percent) and governance (13 percent).

In the last thread after learning of the calamity in Iligan CIty in AUgust, I posted a way that those who wished to, could offer help and assistance from just about anywhere on the globe, near or far. Once again, my system for doing this worked as today in the mail I recieved a letter of thanks from Mayor Cruz with an official City reciept for the donation I made to the Iligan City Calamity fund. When calamity strikes, those who are far away from Iligan City are not totally helpless, there really is something we can do !

Interesting to see some posts in here from someone else in New York too !

Seven Mining Projects Expect to Start Production in 2009

Seven mining projects are expected to start production next year despite likely delays in the infusion of additional investments into some of these ventures because of the global financial crisis, according to Mines and Geosciences Bureau data.

These are Carmen Copper Corp.’s Toledo copper project in Cebu province, Oceana Gold Philippines Inc.’s Didipio copper-gold project in Nueva Vizcaya, Coral Bay Mining Corp.’s Palawan HPAL Nickel Line 2 project, Filminera Resources Corp.’s Masbate gold project, Platinum Group of Metals Corp.’s Iligan ferronickel smelter plant and Manticao ferronickel smelter plant, and Philsaga Mining Corp.’s Banahaw gold project.

Investments in these projects totaled P30.94 billion as of the first half of the year, the data show. Additional infusion is needed by some of the companies for production and processing operations.

These projects, excluding Coral Bay’s nickel project, are expected to produce at least $890 million worth of minerals, equivalent to 32 percent of the industry’s projected sales of $2.769 billion next year, the data show.

The Toledo copper project is projected to yield $390.24 million worth of metals in 2009: 44,049 dry metric tons of copper concentrate; 50,873 ounces of gold (in concentrate) and 193,315 ounces of silver (in concentrate).

Despite financing setbacks, Oceana Gold’s Didipio project is seen to produce $71.96 million worth of copper (7.40 dry metric tons in concentrate) and gold (77,725 ounces in concentrate).

The Masbate gold project is seen to yield $152.72 million worth of gold (163,000 ounces) and silver (113,987 ounces), while the Philsaga gold project is projected to yield 24,076 ounces of gold worth $22.27 million.

Platinum Group’s Iligan and Manticao plants are projected to produce $253.05 million worth of ferronickel and calcined nickel ore.

With these projects, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources said it was hoping to raise to six percent the contribution of the mining industry to the country’s total exports in 2009.

As defined by the World Bank, a “mining country” is one that exports minerals and mineral products equivalent to at least six percent of total exports.

Last year, Philippine exports of minerals and mineral products reached $2.37 billion — 4.8 percent of total exports. -Philippine Daily Inquirer

Cement firms go ‘green’ (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=politics6_sept23_2008)

Efforts of major players in the Philippine cement industry toward environment protection and preservation drew praises from non-government organizations.

Jesus “Teng” Lim, secretary general of the Central Luzon-based farmers’ group, said the cement producers’ moves deserve full public support, particularly from the farmer sector “which is the biggest stakeholder in environment protection issues.”

Lim, who is also deputy secretary general of the advocacy group Sigla, hailed the programs being pursued by the country’s leading cement manufacturers in the areas of pollution reduction, waste management, biodiversity protection and preservation, reforestation, and preventing extinction of endangered species. KMMGL operates in the provinces of Bulacan, Pampanga, Nueva Ecija, Zambales, Tarlac, and Bataan.

Lim cited the adoption by Lafarge-associated Republic Cement Corp. of a 6-hectare area of the endangered Ipo Watershed in Norzagaray, Bulacan, where more than 1,000 tree saplings were initially planted. RCC is doing this in cooperation with the Environment Department, the Manila Water Co., the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System, and the non-government organization “Hands On Manila.”

RCC intends to broaden the program to cover other watersheds notably in Rizal and Batangas. Iligan Cement Corp., another Lafarge-associated company, intends to do the same.

Fashion Forward

Lenora Luisa A. Cabili or "Lenlen" to close friends has always been creative with her hands. She dabbled into writing, was a stylist/contributor for a fashion/Lifestyle magazine and at one time became a private tutor for kids. She is currently the manager of the family business- Coleman Stores.

She took up BS Clothing Technology in UP Dilliman but did not get into fashion until ten years after college. Her latest endeavor, LOLA's CLOSET is starting to make a name in the Fashion Industry. They don’t have a stand alone shop but their clothes are being sold in Manila at the following stores:

- +632 at GreenBelt 5
- Felicity at Edsa Shangrila Mall
- Firma at Trinoma
- Albertine at the West Village in New York USA

Together with her two other partners, her best friend Akiko Thomson and Akiko's sister Julia Thomson-Fontana, they opened LOLA's CLOSET. It all started with the income they earned from prayer books which she and Akiko produced and sold. They invested their earnings into fabrics and made clothes and joined a bazaar in RockWell. Then they slowly became serious with it.

Because of the good response from the fashion world they decided to go full time with their new baby. The transition was just natural. The ukay ukay trips they made in the past finally paid off. They recently sold a few caftans to Solita Monsod. Lucy Torres Gomez wears a blouse designed by them. They started small, mostly friends or friends of friends as their clientele. But all businesses start that way.

Something to propel you up.

Lenlen does the design and the production work, oversees the sewers, buys the fabric while Akiko and Julia take care of marketing.

The caftan is their best selling item earning praise and admiration every time they travel abroad. It is nice to know that an Iliganon is making a name in the fashion industry. Lenlen can u make me your muse? Just on a test basis. Hehehehehe.

PNP Iligan warns public vs fake paper bills

by Rex Dumarpa

Iligan City (24 September) -- Local police authorities here in Iligan City warned the public anew of the proliferation of fake paper bills. The warning was made by Police Chief Inspector Arniel Catarata of the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) in today's press briefing at the PIA Information Command Center.

Catarata said they are now investigating complaints filed at their office by victimis of the fake bills scheme. He added that initial investigation revealed denominations of P200, P500 as well as P1,000 being circulated by lawless elements mostly in shopping centers, grocery stores, restaurants, sari-sari stores and public markets.

While the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) has yet to issue an advisory about this, Catarata said the public needs to be informed of these syndicates' modus operandi, which usually surfaces when big public events happen. He further said that the police are not only concerned with security for the daily activities leading up to the Iligan City Fiesta in September 29, but they are also seeking out the source of these fake bills as well as dealing with petty crimes. (PIA-10)
