galing naman nito, sana matapos na lahat ng phases ng development ng NPC nature's park kasi it will add to the tourism aspects not only of Iligan City but Northern Mindanao as well. It will also put Iligan on the eco-tourism map in Mindanao. In the future pag nag materialize na lahat yan dadagsa ang fieldtrips at team building seminars sa lugar niyan. I hope yung aviary magkaroon ng collaboration with MSU-IIT. Coz recent researches of MSU-IIT professors did well in the recent years.
GearX September 25th, 2008, 03:58 AM Meron bang entrance fee or libre pa rin..?

Yang Buruun contigent ay mixture ng grupo from Tribu Iliganon at saka trainors ng perennial Kasadya invitational category champions which is Tribu Kauswaganon of Kauswagan. Sila ang nagte-train ng Kauswagan pero wala na kasi si Mayor Jack Maruhom dahil last term na niya before the recent election kaya wala rin sila. Kaya eto sila ngayon nag collaborate with the Abaca traders ng Pala-o, I.C. together with Sinulog runners up Tribu Iliganon dancers to form this group.
They will also participate in the Dalit Festival 2008 of Tangub City this coming 29th.

The trainor of Tribu Iliganon to the Sinulog Festival was the Sinulog champion trainor Barry Luche of Daan Bantaayan, Cebu who is a known collaborator with Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia of Cebu for the Provincial Government Contingent in that event. The trainor/choreographer who choreographed Buruun yesterday is Jermaine Nabong of Roosevelt, Iligan City who trained Tribu Kalilintad of Kauswagan, LDN. Magkakilala din ang dalawang trainors na yan. Pero I think they will still join the Sinulog Festival lalo na't nanalo uli ang Buruun. Ang laki ata ng cash prize ngayon, Php 250,000.00 no?
Whoever is the trainor what's important is meron tayong exposure sa Sinulog Festival kasi naka focus ang tourism audience ng Pilipinas doon at malaman na meron pa palang ibang lugar sa Pilipinas aside from Manila and Cebu.

GearX September 29th, 2008, 04:34 AM Global shipbuilders mull plants here but steel supply inadequate (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080929136498.html)
By BERNIE CAHILES-MAGKILAT
Global shipbuilders are seriously considering of expanding their operations in the country but are faced with problem of availability of supply of steel plates because the country’s lone producer, Global Steel Philippines (SPV-AMC) Inc., could not meet with their required specifications.
Trade and Industry Undersecretary Elmer C. Hernandez, who is also managing head of the Board of Investments, said there are two keen investors – an Australian-Filipino joint venture and a Singapore-based company.
"But the main concern of these investors is the availability of supply of steel plates at their own specifications," Hernandez said.
The Australian-Filipino joint venture shipbuilding firm is using Australian technology and has a shipyard project here while the Singaporean-based shipbuilder is a new investor.
The new trend now is to build ships using longer and wider steel plates to minimize welding but GSPI is producing smaller and shorter steel plates only.
"So, this is a challenge. GSPI needs to retrofit and invest more to meet the specifications of these shipbuilders because shipbuilding is moving away from traditional shipbuilding hubs and moving to the Philippines. We should take advantage of that. Now, can GSPI face up to the challenge?" Hernandez said.
Investors, however, noted that it is not yet economically viable for GSPI to invest in retrofitting at this point because demand for the bigger specifications for steel plates for shipbuilding is still limited.
"But GSPI should be looking forward to this new trend in shipbuilding," Hernandez said.
Hanjin, the country’s biggest shipbuilder located in Subic freeport, is importing steel plates from Korea.
GSPI opened its plate steel mill operation in July this year with an initial monthly production of 20,000 metric tons and said they would serving shipbuilding and other construction industries.
GSPI managing director Lalit Kumar Sehgal said the production of steel plates would enable the country to save million per month in foreign exchange as the country will no longer be totally dependent on steel plate imports.
Steel plates are used in various applications such as construction equipment, shipping and drilling platforms, pipelines, tunnel supports and excavator shovels.
At present, the country is importing over 72,000 metric tons per annum from Russia , China and Ukraine for commercial grades and from Japan , Korea , Europe for high-tensile special grades.
The company’s entry into the steel plate market is advantageous to consumers since they will benefit in terms of competitive pricing, savings on freight cost and quick technical service without compromising on quality, GSPI said.
This plate mill was in line with our stated strategy of fully rehabilitating the assets of National Steel, as provided for in the Asset Purchase Agreement.
"We think the consumers deserve a choice wherein Global Steel’s marketing plan will emphasize on quality, pricing and quick after-sales service," Sehgal said.
The steel plate production is the third product of GSPI after the Indian-owned firm successfully rehabilitated the formerly National Steel plant, which was mothballed in 1999 and reopened in 2004.
An official privy to the reopening of the plant placed GSPI’s total investment at 0 million for the rehabilitation of the HRC, CRC and now the steel plate mill. GSPI is now the country’s largest producer of flat steel products.
Sehgal said the company’s consolidation efforts in the domestic and international market continues wherein GSPI exports 70 percent of its production to the overseas market and 30 percent to the domestic market.
So far, GSPI exports to neighboring South East Asian & Pan Asian countries. For the overseas market, GSPI targets Vietnam , Korea , Indonesia and India which imports over 700,000 MTPA of flat steel.
The sales volume in the first six months of Jan- June 2008 has increased by 27% ($ 143.7 million: 183,211 MT) compared to (144,000MT : $ 96.5 Million ) of January- June 2007.
The company has ambitious plans to ramp up sales volume to over 400,000 MT for FY 2008 including the launching of tinplates sometime this year.
Sehgal further said the company has remained committed to its plan to set up the integrated steel plant in Philippines with a project capital outlay of US$ 1.60 billion and with a production capacity of 3.6 million tons per annum (TPA) slabs.
This project will generate over 35,000 direct and indirect job opportunities. The said project is under consideration by the Board of Investments.
The backward integration project envisages facilities such as Blast Furnace 4 million TPA, Sinter plant of 4.6 million TPA, Coke oven battery of 1.6 Million TPA, Pig casting machine 1 Million TPA capacity and raw material handling system, among others. (BCM)

GearX September 29th, 2008, 05:00 AM More BPO firms to open in Mindanao (http://www.businessmirror.com.ph/09292008/economy04.html)
By Bong Garcia Jr.
Reporter
ZAMBOANGA CITY—More business- process outsourcing (BPO) offices are likely to open in Mindanao as key cities like General Santos continue to develop business environments that are particularly attractive to information-technology (IT) firms, industry experts noted.
With this development, Maria Jamea Garcia, Business Processing Association of the Philippines (BPAP) executive director for talent development, said Mindanao and its major cities should be aggressive in their campaign to improve the talent, infrastructure and environment needed to advance in the sector of IT and IT-enabled services.
A BPAP study showed the Philippines is well-positioned to corner a 10-percent share of the global outsourcing and offshoring market by 2010, with potential revenues of about $13 billion and additional direct employment of close to one million workers.
Data from the United States Agency for International Development-funded Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program showed that Mindanao cities like General Santos, Iligan and Zamboanga have strong potential as competitive offshoring sites, particularly when the labor and infrastructure resources of their neighboring municipalities and provinces are factored in.
The GEM program is helping to facilitate BPO investment in Mindanao.
“Developing these additional cities would help the Philippines achieve a more balanced distribution of growth in the BPO sector. This will ease some of the pressures on costs and help seed development in other parts of the country,” Garcia said.
Bing Garcia, vice president and chief operations officer of Marbel Telephone System Inc., said his company has begun laying down a fiber-optic network which he calls the “Ring of Fiber” connecting General Santos and the provinces of South Cotabato and Sarangani.
The “Ring” is being established in preparation for General Santos’ planned WiMax system, a wireless digital communications system whose broad coverage can be extended to its outlying districts and rural areas, much like a cellular-phone network.
Tacurong City and the 11 municipalities in the province of Sultan Kudarat will also be connected to the fiber-optic network under the Sultan Kudarat Telephone System Inc.
General Santos City is the trading and agro-industrial center of Region 12, which also encompasses the provinces of South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Sarangani.

I think it's best for Iligan to stay with Region 10. What Iligan must do is to provide adequate infrastructure, offer more courses attuned to industry needs and diversify the economy to achieve balanced, sustainable growth. Not all cities progress at the same pace.

Creating another region just for us to become a regional is not appropriate coz what will happen is that we would then become a part of either Region 12 again or ARMM. Sometimes becoming a regional center is not always the answer to progress coz what we are seeing now with other regional centers is not quite jst like what's happening to CdeO. Take for instance Butuan, its not progressive really like CdeO or Davao. The only thing why Cagayan de Oro is performing well nowadays is the way the local government are finding ways to improve their infrastructure as well as ways to improve their governance. For now, I dont see that happening here in ILIGAN as some of our services are not even met by the LGU yet.
For one, our local government is not even looking for ways to lure out investors to come to the city by finding commercial/industrial zones for them to expand their businesses. Look at what Cebu is doing, they are reclaiming vast shorelines for their city's expansion as they see the future of their city is expanding further. I think what former Mayor Yañez plan before was quite good for our future: to reclaim that vast of shoreline from Tambacan to Camague though it did not pursue for unknown reasons. If that pushed through, I think our progress is somewhat faster now. The only problem of our city is a long term plan for infrastructure and future land development.
timoga_lover September 30th, 2008, 07:02 AM TONZI ang galing mo, bro. Tama ka, medyo mahina sa marketing ang local government ng Iligan when it comes to promoting it as an ideal business location. Hindi na-capitalize ang abundant and highly qualified work/labor force that the city has. Hindi rin yata na inform ang mga capitalists and investors that the city’s electricity is cheaper compared to other major cities in the country. Yung shipyard lang sa CdO is a perfect example of Iligan officials’ lack of marketing campaign for out city.
Kung sino po sa inyo ang merong direct access to the mayor of Iligan, our beloved mayor Lawrence Cruz, paki sabi magtawag siya o kaya sulatan nya ang lahat ng BOP companies at i-invite nya to establish a branch here in Iligan. Ba't hindi nya gawing priority ito samantalang ilang write-ups na sa mga leading dailies ang nababasa natin that Iligan would be a perfect location for BPOs due to its abundant labor and decent infrastructure. If he can't personally do the calling and writing himself, mag-assign nalang siya ng staff to do that in his behalf. Dapat talaga aggressive ang mayor natin sa mg aganyang bagay kasi Iligan is constantly facing competitions due to the many ideal locations for BPOs all over the country, so double effort is expected from him. Overall, mabait po ang mayor natin. He just need to be more aggressive sa marketing side para meron siyang magandang legacy maiiwan sa Iligan and he will be remembered as Iligan’s finest mayor in the city’s entire history.

but being regional center is a big points to us iliganon, just like in pagadian, we all know pagadian is just a small city, but look at them now, when they became the regional center of zamboanga.. the investors doubles... may mali kasi ang gov't natin they we're given a change to be become a new region and be a regional center in a new region, at kung natuloy pa yun, the new region will compose of lanao norte, miss. occ. iligan, ozamiz, oroqueta, tangub, north cotabato and kidapawan. lahat sila payag na, pero yun iligan gov't ang ayaw. :ohno: :ohno:

Regarding BPO companies bro, when I applied for our internet connection, I asked PLDT regarding their convergence line thing where cable, internet, and telephone are rolled into one line only.
Network infrastructure is the main reason why we are not yet hosting BPO companies here in Iligan City. Whatever effort that our city government do in declaring places as an ICT hub or an Export Processing Zone and other things, when the necessary network capabilities and infrastructures are not yet laid, then BPO's will not come to our city. The good thing about CdeO is that their MISORTEL has invested that fiber optic link some ten years ago already. When we frequented CdeO almost two times a week ten years ago, I saw how they worked hours per day just to dig into the highway from CdeO to the western part of MISOR in laying that fiber optic underground.
Look at what Gensan is doing now, they are investing in Wimax technology to enable the BPO companies have their operations in that city. I think we need to do that here in Iligan with the help of our telecom companies operating here. You know, our graduates here in Iligan have been tapped by BPO companies in Cebu as our graduates have the necessary communication skills to do the job. That's why we all can see how Cebu is progressing because our talents are spending their money in Cebu though they come from our city. We create a lot of highly skilled graduates but we do not have the necessary companies who can absorb them when they graduate.
I think this is one of the stones left unturned by our city officials in connection to their support to the ICT industry here in Iligan.

Handkerchief wiping and touching of the image: a tradition that dates back to our ancestors. According to tradition, wiping of the image of San Miguel either by your own hand or a handkerchief to the ailing part of your body will result to the curing of your illness. That's why, mostly during, before, and after the 29th, a lot of people are lining up for the image just to touch it and saying to him their "personal needs", either of health and good harvest and he will give it to that person who asked. A proof of this is the successful birth of my daughter six years ago. My wife asked the miraculous image for a safe carriage and that she would deliver the baby before October. The answer to her prayer? Our daughter was born on the 29th of September which is the day of his feast at exactly 12:00 noon.

Our very own Tribu Lumad Iliganon, the champions of the recently held Kasadya Streetdancing and Merrymaking Festival which is a highlight event of the Diyandi Festival, has won 1st runner up at the recently held Dalit Festival in Tangub City, Misamis Occidental yesterday, September 29, 2008.
According to their San Miguel image impersonator/ San Miguel costume coordinator, Art Alcuizar, the recent event enabled the group to position itself to join next year's Sinulog Festival in Cebu City on the third Sunday of January, 2009. Morever, he told me that their supporter promised to finance them for the event even if it will cost him/her Php 1 million pesos for that event.
Wow, finally, I'm gonna be seeing again my former co-trainors join the Sinulog Festival. They last joined Sinulog in 2003 where they only landed in the 10 with Tribu Kalilintad of Kauswagan, LDN as their represented LGU.

Ako lang, for example, can lure at least 4 persons to go back here from Manila. The more people with decent earnings means the better for our local economy.
Jollibee will be occupying the vacant area on the left side of the main entrance of the mall. Chowking will occupy right beside Jollibee. The two foodchains were reported of backing out due to the limited stall size that the mall assigned to them. Somehow, the disagreements have been patched up. A week ago, the designer had visited the location and the interior plan will be submitted on Monday for the start of construction.
Yung Bench, wala na daw talaga -- nag back out na kasi Bench wants to occupy a large area and Gaisano couldn't provide the size that Bench wants.
My source: taga Gaisano mismo.

Yes, most likely. Yun kasi ang sabi ng PLDT though I heard na ang Globe eh gumagamit ng fiber optic line for their subscribers. Ang tingin ko lang kasi ang fiber optic line ng Globe is limited lang for their fixed subscriber line ng kanilang telephone service at internet. One thing is the bandwidth speed capability nila which most likely what's needed by the BPO companies primarily. Ang dapat gawin ngayon is for the city government to ask our telecom companies about their existing infrastructures to know if we are capable of building our own ICT industry here and to give them tax incentives to further expand their network infrastructures.
Pero you know what guys, siguro yung dug out areas ng Gen. Aguinaldo Street to the Roxas Avenue 1 to 2 months ago will be one of the major breakthroughs to our ICT industry kasi they (PLDT) told it is their expansion but I ddnt ask further for what it is.
If we really need this industry, then what I mentioned should first be acted by our city officials in support to the ICT industry. Maybe somebody should talk with our ICT council here in Iligan and perhaps discuss this matter as soon as possible.
michael_ray September 30th, 2008, 02:08 PM Iligan has so many things to offer. First, you have one of the most powerful educational institutions in the country (MSU-IIT). Second, you are blessed with natural resources that have been vital in Mindanao's economy. Maria Christina falls for example has been contributing a lot to Mindanao's electricity. Third, your place is rich with scenic spots that could could launch thousands of tourists (Timoga and Tinago Falls). All of these should have contributed a lot in bringing progress to Iligan. But they are not being utilized for the city's economic boon. With proper governance, Iligan would definitely break the record. And it's possible, very possible.....

True. What's lacking in Iligan is the officials' enthusiasm for good governance, resilience for hosting future industries, strictness in implementing its policies, and good city planning for the city's future expansion. I couldn't specify more on other things as such may put down our city further. For now, I'll just pray that somebody from the city council may be able to read our discussion so they may be jolted to do better.

^^Don't worry about it @TONZI. The ICT Council of Iligan is working doubly hard to address these problems. Weaknesses of Iligan have already been identified and one of them deals with security. Meron na po tayong scorecard and Iligan is doing good. :)
Alingatong September 30th, 2008, 02:27 PM 104th Brigade head commends Iliganons for successful Diyandi Fest
ICC Iligan City (30 September) -- Col. Benito Antonio De Leon, Commander of the 4th Infantry (Sultan) Brigade, 1st Infantry (Tabak) Division (104th Bde) Philippine Army has congratulated the people of Iligan City for the successful conduct of the Diyandi Festival, recently.
Speaking before today's media at the Information Command Center (ICC), Philippine Information Agency, De Leon said this only showed that the people did not cower in fear and proceeded with their normal lives, such that the objectives of the terrorist activities were not fulfilled.
Among these terroristic activities are the sending of "scare messages" and other disinformation sent through text or interpersonal means to discourage people from participating in the festivities to honor St. Michael, the Archangel, the city's patron saint that coincided with the annual city fiesta on Sept. 29.
Called the Diyandi Festival, a month-long celebration was lined up by the city government with the cooperation of all its villages or barangays that ended up with the procession of the image of St. Michael around the city, a ritual of the Roman Catholics.
The activity was well-attended in by various tourists, both domestic and foreign without any untoward incident that took place, hence, De Leon's congratulatory message to the Iligan residents.
"Meanwhile, on the occasion of the end of the Ramadhan on Sept. 30, I would like to greet our Muslim brothers and sisters a Happy Eid'l Fitr, hopefully a renewal of the pursuit of unity in the area," the 104 Bde Commander said.
On the other hand, he said 104th Bde is now in charge of the security in the hinterland villages or barangays of the Lanao del Norte considering that the security in the coastal areas is handled by the 3rd Infantry (Peacemaker) Brigade of the 4th Infantry (Diamond) Division (403rd Bde) is in the coastal areas.
We are hopeful that in shortest possible time we could track down the lawless MILF group (LMG). Although I cannot set the timeline, we are very optimistic that with the help of the local government executives and the people in the area, we are closing in on Kumander Bravo and will be able to bring him to justice, De Leon added. timoga_lover October 1st, 2008, 03:28 AM Here's the storey about Bench:
The Bench in Iligan, which is located in Aguinaldo Street (??? help me get the name of the street pls)), is a franchise and the owner was being offered to get a space inside the mall. It was reported that the franchise owner declined the offer because they found the space expensive. (But I did not buy that reason.) I assumed the franchise owners don't have the needed capital for the relocation of Bench to the mall as it would require several millions of pesos as fresh capital investment. Since Gaisano has to make sure its stalls are all booked and rented out, they contacted Bench directly. My source told me that Bench Manila responded but asked for a specific area size. Unfortunately, the size could have been provided had it not been used by Gaisano as its stock area, which is the area right on the second floor at the back of the lined-up stalls adjacent to Gaisano department store and right below the theaters. Good news came in again just yesterday afternoon that Gaisano is pushing for a second round of negotiation with Bench and other giant food chains. (I was hoping Gaisano could close a deal with KFC and Pizza Hut. Sarap nun!!) :D

timoga_lover October 1st, 2008, 05:10 AM Speaking of Iligan City high schools and colleges: meron din St Michael's College, Iligan Capitol College, Iligan Medical Center College, Iligan Sanitarium College, St. Peter's College at Lycium of Iligan na ok din na mga colleges.
Sa highsschools naman andyan ang MSU-IDS, Capitol, St. Peter's, St. Mary's, San Miguel, Corpus Cristy and the best and the most prestigious in Iligan -- La Salle Academy.

Pero I would root for La Salle kasi taga La Salle ako eh. biased lang tayo bro kasi skul natin yan, eh.

Sa highsschools naman andyan ang MSU-IDS, Capitol, St. Peter's, St. Mary's, San Miguel, Corpus Cristy and the best and the most prestigious in Iligan -- La Salle Academy.

Since the building is owned by a group of businessmen, they should have built a 2-story commercial building. The first level should have been allocated to fastfood chains while the second level to electronics and celphones outlets (sort of a greenhills-virra mall type).

Ug karon ang gym pa under renovation. Ginapadak-an para naa nay bleachers.

BXU-GCP October 1st, 2008, 05:34 PM Creating another region just for us to become a regional is not appropriate coz what will happen is that we would then become a part of either Region 12 again or ARMM.
Butuan was left behind when it was still part of Region X. Most of the developments were concentrated in CDO during those times. When Caraga Region was formed, little by little Butuan is inching her way up and may surpass Iligan City soon if the environment in Iligan will not change. Other countries issued restriction of travel for their citizens to Mindanao except BUTUAN, CDO and DAVAO. In the 2007 Competitive Cities Study by AIM, Butuan ranked 9th in the midsized cities category. CDO and Iligan dropped out from the Top 10. In 2007, Caraga Region has the fastest growth rate in Mindanao and third nationwide behind MIMAROPA and Central Visayas.
Maybe your benchmark for a progressive city is not the same as what economists are using when you say Butuan is not progressive.
Now on creating another region with Iligan as the Regional Capital. Maybe the provinces of Misamis Or, Misamis Occ, Lanao del Norte must be broken first into several provinces or else we will have Regional Capitals with 2 or 3 provinces only under its jurisdiction. Breaking these provinces will not happen that fast, hence Iligan may not become a Regional Center in our lifetime. But still it is not impossible to happen.
ona October 1st, 2008, 05:54 PM Based on my observation CDO, Iligan & Butuan are all growing fast.
Alingatong October 1st, 2008, 06:18 PM Both CdeO and Butuan as regional centers are doing well. Iligan is not left behind.
ona October 1st, 2008, 06:22 PM no more drama...all these cities are booming & blooming
Alingatong October 1st, 2008, 06:24 PM Strongly agree! Let's  to that.
TONZI October 1st, 2008, 06:32 PM Butuan was left behind when it was still part of Region X. Most of the developments were concentrated in CDO during those times. Actually, what we were talking about is how progressive Iligan could become when it is to become a regional capital. Our point of discussion of a progressive city is the way that Cagayan de Oro and Davao is having as regional capitals right now. And with that, aspect, I think Iligan City and Butuan are behind in terms of commerce, trade and income specially that Butuan is actually a regional capital. We were not really comparing Iligan City with Butuan on that aspect as we were pointing out Butuan as a regional center against CdeO and Davao as regional centers. In my point of view, I think it is better that Iligan City stay as it is for the moment as choosing for it to become a regional capital would relegate it again to either regions 12 or ARMM which is not quite what we do not want to happen. We have been to region 12 before and our progress is oven slower then.
That analogy is just putting into the point of how other regional capitals are faring with CdeO and Davao. I do see Butuan as better than Iligan because it enjoys peace and order that Iligan hasn't enjoyed recently as seen in the travel advisories and the recent happening but I believe that each city has its own ups and downs. :)
With due respect to AIM survey, I do not see anything so detrimental to us if our city either goes up or down in that survey as it does not fairly see progress of a place. As Cebu is ranked lower in that survey recently against Davao and other highly urbanized cities, how come Cebu is still enjoying investments right now amounting to more than 8 billion pesos? How come a lot of foreigners are still going to that city? That AIM survey has erupted a lot of city vs. city discussions in blogs and forums like this. I think dragging that survey into a discussion would only generate regionalism mentality to any discussion.
Dont worry BXU, I do not have anything against Butuan coz I loved my stay in your city when I was there in 2001. And my observation of Butuan is not what I saw in 2001 as I see here in SSC how it is developing better just the way as our city too is slowly developing itself.
ona October 1st, 2008, 06:44 PM To tell you frankly the reason probably why CDO & Davao are very successful as regional capitals is because of 2 main factors: strategic location & size. CDO is a transhipment hub between Cebu & Davao plus also connects Zamboanga+Iligan to Butuan. For Davao's case its sheer size & abundant resources enable them to better plan the city.

I see it that way too. And I also that location of Butuan is seemingly like that of CdeO where it sits on a crossroad to other places in Mindanao.
For me lang ha, I think the way for Iligan and Butuan to be as progressive like these cities is by building an industry where it can support its constituents employment needs. For now, let us start by developing our cities through services so that we can slowly gain ground just like what CdeO and Davao is doing.
If the mall spaces are for concessionaires, then they don't need a big storage/stock space. Unlike the old Gaisano building where all the stocks belonged to them. My guess, is it is for the highest bidder.
Just as airplanes ALWAYS have a few extra reserved seats for VIPs, just in case.

Here's the storey about Bench:
Sarap nun!!) :D
national bookstore nalang unta oi...
Thanks for the info. For me, I'd like it better if Gaisano will contact National Bookstore instead. I'm sure, more Iliganons will be happier than having a second Bench store. :)

timoga_lover October 2nd, 2008, 07:11 AM If the mall spaces are for concessionaires, then they don't need a big storage/stock space. Unlike the old Gaisano building where all the stocks belonged to them. My guess, is it is for the highest bidder.
Just as airplanes ALWAYS have a few extra reserved seats for VIPs, just in case.
Hmnnn... The way I understand it, sir, the vacant lot adjacent to the mall was supposed to be where the storage of Gaisano department store should stand, but somehow, that did not happen. Because of that, some portions of the mall, including that portion I referred to as the intended space for Bench and a huge space on the 4th floor; have to be converted into stock/storage areas. I think the Gaisano Department store cannot afford to sacrifice those spaces as they needed them for their stocks. And it could be just for the moment, so I’m saying that it’s too early to tell. I'm hoping fruitful negotiations to happen anytime soon as Gaisano is doing something to accommodate their interested clients.
One thing I can say about Gaisano Company is that they started off quite unfriendly to their potential clients. I think it was because they did not have the needed marketing staff to process the applicants’ intentions for leasing. My dad has applied for a space and he went through hell to comply the requirements as they are meticulous about the applicants’ business history and my dad being a physician/surgeon does not have any supporting documents, so he backed out and still quite pissed with Gaisano until now.
So ang hirap, magastos at time consuming sa pabalik-balik mo dun.

by Elaine O. Ratunil
ICC Iligan City (2 October) -- "I would agree that to a certain extent business [in Iligan City] has been affected…I believe it is a logical consequence of a deterioration of peace and order situation of any locality but we are trying to restore and build up confidence once again," Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz said during a recent media forum in Iligan City.
He further stated, "It is fortunate that our fiesta celebration was the next good thing [happened] after the August 18 incident, and with the relative peace that we have been observing in our city I believe that confidence will continue to build up to the desired level that business will really make good."
The mayor said that the city government of Iligan is getting the cooperation and support of stakeholders.
Meanwhile, he said that a significant part of Mindanao is really threatened by the hostilities and potential destruction that might happen. With this, he said that Iligan is really preparing for any eventuality. Thus, he said they are securing the boundaries of city, in particular. They are also securing the water source.
The mayor, on the other hand said that in order to really get their act together, he coordinated with various stakeholders such as the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), the Philippine National Police (PNP) and other government line agencies.
"Our AFP is in command and in control…Our Philippine National Police (PNP) is securing the city proper," Mayor Cruz said, adding, "On the part of the city government, we have mobilized our civilian volunteer organizations."
The mayor urged all of them to continue their high level of surveillance, security consciousness, vigilance, and not to let up, more so, that the city fiesta is over, and a post Ramadhan scenario has been created wherein text messages are now starting again to heat up and make messages depicting a "doomsday scenario."
Further, that mayor is hoping that peace will hold in the city and the city should be prepared, in full partnership with stakeholders. (PIA-10)

And he needs to extend his influence to those "big time" investors from Cebu, CdO, Davao and Manila. He needs to court them, sway them, lure them, chase them, etc... to establish a site in Iligan. Our mayor has got to do some extraordinary performances to uplift Iligan from its depressing state right now. And he must do it quick before we lost competitions to our neighboring cities again.
Alingatong October 2nd, 2008, 02:42 PM Ombudsman Mindanao office leads services caravan in Iligan
ICC Iligan City (2 October) -- Some 3,000 residents from 12 depressed barangays in Iligan City benefited today from a humanitarian-social caravan spearheaded by the Office of the Ombudsman in Mindanao.
According to Atty. Rodolfo Elman, Assistant Ombudsman-Mindanao, the caravan is a regular program of their office, but it's the first time the caravan was brought to Iligan City.
Elman added that the caravan is unique in that is also features a "one-stop shop" of front-line government services. Representatives from the Dept. of Foreign Affairs (DFA), National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), Land Transportation Office (LTO), Dept. of Health (DOH), Phil. National Police (PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), Dept. of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Dept. of Agriculture (DA), Phil. National Red Cross (PNRC) and the like were there to serve the beneficiaries.
Also part of the caravan were a dental mission, outpatient consultations coupled with distribution of medicines, as well as distribution of relief goods to residents of the depressed barangays. Walk-in clients, or those not coming from the 12 barangays, were also accommodated.
Elman added that they are now meeting with local stakeholders to extend the next services caravan to the countryside to Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur. (PIA-10)

That's exactly what I had in mind before, an extraordinary effort not only from him but also from our city officials. I think he is focused on water project and C 3 road.
For now I think, Cong. Varf Belmonte has been so "extraordinarily" active with what he promised during the elections. That is, turning Iligan City into a lone district which is already waiting for the 2010 elections for us to vote for our "first" lone district congressman (whom I think would still be him). I like the resiliency of this man despite of what he was before. With what he is showing to his constituents now, all those negas about him are vanished.

Both are great schools. These schools are some of Iligan's treasures. As for me, I'm very lucky my parents sent me to these schools during those formative years---La Salle, IDS, then to Ateneo, then back to MSU-IIT again for graduate studies.
In retrospect, I can readily say now that it all depends on the student. It's the students and their attitude that define the school's record. :)

I say not just the Mayor but the entire City Council. :) On the lighter side, maybe he might consider to present himself on an upbeat and firm image---away from the distraught image he has shown on TV during those times the MILF stole the spotlight.
634veteran October 2nd, 2008, 05:55 PM Iligan will never catch up with Butuan. Butuan is a much safer place and the politicians there are more progressive in thinking

Let's just look at the manifestations - Land area of the 2: around 800,000 sq. km. Population of the 2: around 250,000. Both have at least 1 Big mall (Gaisano) and both have similar number of business establishments.
But for the sake of harmony in all threads please avoid city comparissons.

It's because most of us have our feet firmly set on the ground while looking up high on the horizon. It's the most important thing I learned in St. Michael's (High School) before I transferred to another school as our section in first year that time is "humility" which means to be humous like the soil, humble and modest.

But a sizable part of the city landscape of Iligan is mountainous/terrain so its poses a lot of challenges to the city developers, unlike Butuan that is basically flat. Well, I've actually never been to Butuan but I have heard lots of nice stories about the city and the surrounding areas. I've only been to Gingoog --it's a small city but it's clean, and like Butuan, has a flat surface ground which promises a lot of growth potential.
We can actually cover this topic without arguing, right? let's just avoid personal attacts and hit this discussion in an objective manner. That's what my La Salle education has taught me.

BOB-bXu October 3rd, 2008, 02:22 PM It only shows how much we love our respective cities. Like I, who started that topic, I do not put things personally as I understood his point and the point of arguing will only lead to city vs. city argument. That's why when he raised his point, even though I have some remorse against it, I put things lightly and respected his point to prevent things to escalate into regionalism and city vs. city argument. :)
city vs city between Iligan and Butuan will never happen as both parties are too busy promoting their respective locales and the promotion of common good within this thread.

After having lunch with my best Australian mate Wendell I decided to go to the annual MUGNA at Pryce properties in Tubod. Feeling bored and still full from the crispy fried chicken I had in Jollibee, walking around the grounds of the bazaar was the best way to burn the calories.
It was a very humid day. Good thing I was able to put on my sun block. I was profusely sweating. It was around 1pm, a perfect time to explore the place. I saw lots of different things that are of interest to me. There were rattan furniture from Davao, food kiosks of familiar establishments, assorted herbs for your culinary needs and potted plants of all varieties.
I originally intended to go there for the UKAY UKAY but later decided to postpone to another day. MUGNA offers a lot of things for everyday people; everything is there in one place. A one-stop-shop. There are even rides for the kids to enjoy. But what really attracted my attention were the different flowering plants on display.
They were from different cultivators all over Mindanao. They came here to showcase their exotic tropical flowering plants. The colors were so bright and eye-catching. Flowers of different sizes were abundant. It was like the colors of the rainbow mixed with one another.
Looking at the flowers I suddenly slipped into dream land. Wondering how my cousin Thumbelina would have felt if she saw these floral landscape in front of me. I am pretty sure she would be gliding from one flower to another if she were here. As I was taking pictures, people were staring at me, perhaps wondering who I was smiling at every time I took shots. It really made my day. Seeing all those wonderful colors reminded me of my younger years playing with my crayons.
Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Violet! ROY G. BIV is everywhere.
Enjoy my pictures.

300 plus steps down allows you to see a breath taking sight. The MAJESTIC Tinago Waterfalls. Hidden in a lush greenery of a forest cover that stretches all the way down to where the water spills, Tinago as fondly called by locals is a relaxing sight.
My photographer friend "Otoy" always makes it a point to visit this Iligan treasure every time he is in town. A must do thing before he goes back to his job as a free lance photographer in Dubai.
As you descent you can already hear the sound of the water flowing with great power to the bottom. And as you reach your destination, a mist of cold spray greets you as if to say WELCOME. There is a bamboo raft you can use to go near the falling water and bathe under its flow. A powerful water massage from up there. Some people even say it is a hydro massage from heaven.
The environment is like paradise with huge ferns all over the place, eye-catching blue-colored dragonflies hovering above you, and alluring multi-colored butterflies. I feel like a "diyosa" whenever I am there. Feeling lang ha!
I only get to visit Tinago every time I have visiting friends from out of town. I am very proud of this natural experience. We should visit it often.

BXU-GCP October 4th, 2008, 05:35 PM Actually, what we were talking about is how progressive Iligan could become when it is to become a regional capital.
Your point taken Tonzi. But please do not make any unnecessary comment when the last time you were in Butuan was in 2001. The city bashing that happened before between CDO & DVO started with simple comments. Am simply updating you that on the point of economists criteria of progress, Butuan is progressing quite well especially in statistical data released in 2007.
By the way Iligan is my residence since 1982 and am connected with MSU-IIT where my work requires me to travel a lot and collect hard statistical data.

Everyone has arguments but it is important to learn to express your anger safely. :okay:
I agree kuya A. We don't have to argue when we compare Iligan to its peer cities. There's knowledge that we can get from the comparison. Anyway, we're not really the experts here so we can take all these discussions as just moot and academic. Those people who often caught in a futile argument are often those who aren't objective and have very shallow mindset.
Personally, I want to find out if Iligan has improved, or the other way -- deteriorated. And there's no way to find that out unless we talk about it objectively. Of course, I get insulted when people from other cities besmirch Iligan. By besmirch means, saying Iligan has not achieved economic growth and success. However, if these people are telling the truth, maybe we should take their words objectively, and instead of lashing back at them with spiteful phrases, we should rather channel our next discussion to some probable solutions on how Iligan will improve. Whether or not the local government would take our discussion positively isn’t really our concern as we are not really involved in our local government management team. Thus everything we discuss here is for the benefit of our self awareness.

yeah. Forumers ng bawat city exchanging claims that their city is better than the other. This will be very helpful para sa mga nagresearch. Let the figures speak ika nga.
ona October 4th, 2008, 06:43 PM ^^tingin ko no city can really be compared to Metro Manila or Metro Cebu nowadays kasi ibang level na dev't sa kanila just visit their projects & construction threads to see the disparity with the other provincial cities. Their economic figures are also many times bigger than the rest. The other cities can learn from this highly developed metropolises and get their best practices, di naman aangat ang syudad natin kung hahanpan natin ng mali ang iba.
Pero for the sake of harmony, sana iwasan na ang mga ganitong aggressive comparisons by just addressing the developments in his/her area wag nang mag-lurk sa ibang thread kung ang tanging dahilan lang ay mag criticize.

ona October 4th, 2008, 07:09 PM to @timoga_lover, kahit anong syudad promising basta well-managed at well-planned. useless talaga mag-claim o even mag-predict kung magiging successful ang isang syudad kasi maraming unforseen events na maaaring mangyari. let's just look at Cebu's success story. It's land area is only around 290+ sq.km. (8 times smaller than Davao City & 5 times smaller than Zamboanga) but its economy is the most successful outside the capital. Kung baga you can have all the resources pero kung di mo ito ma-manage ng mabuti sayang lang.

No worries about that bro. Actually, I was not bashing your city in comparing it with CdeO or Davao. Maybe it was misunderstood though it could actually hit forumers who may read it if it was their city that was compared. Don't worry bro, I am actually updated too on the dvelopments of Butuan and what I was talking about is not comparing the Butuan of 2001. In no way that what I have posted can be bashing on your city's latest developments. Perhaps, that post of mine put a rather bad impression to you. I shall be retracting to what I stated as perhaps there are some points that I did not put into account too. :)

A mismatch indeed. The size of Davao City is actually bigger than that of Metro Cebu while its population is also bigger. I think comparing Davao to CdeO is unfair too. Although we also see how fast CdeO is developing too, like that of Davao's pace in the making.:)

Iligan should have been in the 2nd category if not for Cabili's lack of vision
I've actually ben to most (if not for Butuan and Surigao) cities and that's not the way I think they should be grouped. Let me give you more realistic groupings:
Davao - on a league of its won. Huge. Highly populated. Better Economy. More hotels, malls, industries and more popular outside of Mindanao.
Group 1 - Cagayan de Oro, General Santos City
Group 2 - Zamboanga, Iligan
Group 3 - Butuan, Cotabato, Dipolog
Group 4 - Ozamis, Pagadian
Group 5 - Gingoog, Oroqueta, Dapitan, Tangub
The reason why Butuan is still not in Iligan's league is because Iligan has:
1. higher number in terms of population (and this includes the neighboring towns)
2. a number of large scale industries providing thousands of jobs for the local constituents
3. a higher income than most if not all cities in Mindanao
4. a considerably better --private funded-- infrastructures such as private buildings and hotels
However, I can see that Butuan is rapidly growing-- thanks to Gloria she pouring in more money there than she is to Iligan, her allege hometown. But Iligan is growing as well, albeit not as rapidly as Butuan. And before Butuan has started to really improve, Iligan was already a much developed city in Mindanao, save for Davao, CdO, GenSan and Zamboanga.
I would expect Butuan to grow in the future as the city is promising due to its better peace and order situation and the absence of Muslims in the area. (I also heard that there's a military training camp in Butuan, but there's non in Iligan, only in CdO.) But at the moment, Iligan is more developed than is Butuan.
I would like to let you all know that this is just my personal opinion; I haven't been to Butuan though I've heard a lot of stories about it as my mother is originally from there; and this is just me -- a young chap from a la salle high school who's interest is business rather than civil engineering or architecture, so you can categorically take my words with a grain of salt. :)

Well, it wasn't that bad to be honest with you. I even found it cute, because we are the only city in the country, or probably in the whole Asia, that has over 20 waterfalls, and that makes Iligan truly special. Let me add that, at the moment, Davao is the only city in the island that has an international airport with direct flights to other countries.
