g0Rs October 31st, 2008, 01:45 PM thelandofpromise.com: presenting Mindanao to the world in pictures.
By Bobby Timonera/MindaNews
Friday, 31 October 2008 11:16
[This is the speech prepared by MindaNews editor Bobby Timonera for the 2nd Mindanao Bloggers’ Summit on Oct. 25 in General Santos City. The summit carried the theme “Mindanawon Paminawon Intawon: Blogging the Mindanao Consciousness.” Bob’s topic was about “Photoblogging: Images of Mindanao from the perspective of a Mindanaoan.” But he did not get to read this speech, talking impromptu instead but somewhere along these lines.]
Except for a short stint with an NGO coaxing workers to go on strike in my hometown, the Industrial City of the South, journalism has been my life. I do both writing and photography -- the things I do best, the things I love to do for the rest of my life.
I went into college during the tumultuous last years of Marcos, the assassination of Ninoy, the resurgence of the student movement, the welgang bayans all over the country, the emergence of the mosquito press like Malaya and the Inquirer. Journalism was thus the natural career path for a young graduate barely out of his campus activism years. As they say, “The pen is mightier than the sword.” (Or maybe, as it turned out, my lenses are sharper than the pen?)
So there I was, writing about and taking pictures of oppression against workers and the violation of human rights, election fraud, kidnappings, bombings, the wars, and all the bad things I encountered along the way. Nobody really told me that “bad news is good news,” but I noticed that my stories and pictures got front page treatment when they’re something controversial and shocking. So it meant more income for this lowly paid young promdi journalist. In fact, the kidnappings and banditry and bombings in Lanao funded the purchase of my first camera, and I would say sustained operation of my makeshift darkroom.
So if you’re looking for the people responsible for the bad image of Mindanao, which Oliver (www.robilloblog.com) was referring to this morning, you may start throwing your tomatoes to the podium now. I confess, guilty as charged.
Moving to Manila to join the country’s number one newspaper further strengthened what I learned -- that news, y’know, in order to sell, it’s gotta be bad news. I got bonuses for the controversial stories I broke.
I returned to Mindanao five years later with the same “utak pulbura” mindset. And so shortly after my return, I shocked the whole country with my photographs of a firing squad staged by the MILF in Lanao del Sur. Oh yeah, I got my 15 minutes of fame (or maybe it was longer, a week long) as my stories and photos landed in the front page for days, even a two-page spread in AsiaWeek. But it came with a stiff price -- I went into hiding for six months, and for a while I thought I’d never go back to journalism again.
Maybe that incident, as I went into hiding in Manila and, later, in the safety of my home, led me into thinking that, hey Bob, you were born in Mindanao, grew up in Mindanao, studied in Mindanao, got married in Mindanao, even convinced your Manileña wife to live in Mindanao and enjoying her stay here, raised a family of your own in Mindanao. Ain’t you living in peace in Mindanao? I came to realize that unless you go way out of the way and work really hard to look for the bad news, as journalists are trained to do and love to do, most Mindanaoans really do live in peace. I bet most of us here have not been dodging bullets and bombs all our lives. Yeah, bombings and kidnappings do happen, but very rarely. But hey, that’s how life is in famous tourist destinations like Bali, London, Madrid, New York and Washington, D.C. And people continue to flock there.
It’s as if all journalists have connived to write and photograph only everything that is bad with Mindanao.
Slowly I noticed the change in me, as I began to start writing and taking pictures of the bright side of Mindanao -- of the efforts to achieve peace and development, of ordinary people earning a living, of the beautiful sceneries around me, of the colorful festivals that are uniquely Mindanao.
It was also at this time that a few Mindanao journalists banded together to form its own version of a mosquito press, to present Mindanao to the world from a Mindanaoan perspective. Thus mindanews.com was born. I’m now one of the editors of this group, giving my time and expertise for free, for the love of Mindanao. Not that we’ve stopped covering the wars and the bombings and the kidnappings and everything that is bad about Mindanao. We still do. But we wanted to strike a balance, to show all sides.
Then came the transition to digital photography, and it became so easy to share pictures online, including those not used in the newspapers and other print publications. I began uploading pictures to Pbase, among the first picture-sharing sites, in 2002.
Maybe because of my online presence, more people noticed my work. And so I got emails and calls from editors of various publications and agencies. PAL’s Mabuhay and Cebu Pacific’s Smile inflight magazines would ask of pictures of Mindanao sceneries every now and then. BusinessWorld’s MobileMedia Project asked me to travel twice a month to shoot and write about Mindanao festivals. Donor agencies from the US and Europe asked me to document their projects all over Mindanao.
Ain’t I lucky! Doing the things I love to do, and getting paid for it.
And so it was that, after doing an inventory of my pictures of Mindanao, I found I have pictures from most of the provinces. From Siargao in the east to the farthest island in the west, Sitangkai; from Camiguin in the north to Glan in the south; to the innermost locations in the mountains of Maguindanao and in the underground tunnels of Diwalwal.
What to do with so many pictures now almost filling up my 750gb external drive? (Reminds me, gotta get the 1.5 terabyte soon!)
And so TheLandOfPromise.com was born, in 2003, as a way of showcasing my work to the world, and helping change the image of Mindanao to the eyes of those from the outside world. Every now and then I get emails from strangers, thanking me for putting up the site.
When Avel (www.gensantos.com) emailed me not long ago to talk about photoblogging featuring TheLandOfPromise, my immediate reaction was, “Huh?! Technically it’s not a blog. I did that in good ole html, coz honestly, I don’t know and haven’t explored blogging yet.” The html website that it was, I hadn’t uploaded pictures there for years coz it involved a lot of work doing the codes.
“Pwede na yan!” Avel insisted.
I wasn’t about to back out from the challenge. And so for 2-3 weeks in September, I pondered what to do with TheLandOfPromise, researched how I could improve it, in a way that it’ll be easy for me to upload pictures later, with the thousands of Mindanao images in my hard drive, and the thousands more I’ll be taking until I grow old. (There are thousands more on film that need scanning.)
Zenphoto, an open-source freeware, looked promising, and so I installed it a few weeks ago, struggled with it for weeks, and now happily playing with it. I know I still have a lot to learn with this software, explore its lots of features. I know it won’t be easy for this blogging newbie who’s still struggling with PHP and CSS, but I know I have what it takes to photoblog more than the techies who sit in front of the computer all day, because I have the beautiful pictures of Mindanao, and I get to travel often to get to the remotest areas of Mindanao.
I only have Avel to thank for pushing me into this. Now it looked like I’ve been bitten by the blogging bug, as I upload more pictures almost every day, writing interesting captions, remembering the times when I was in those far-flung locations.
Now I’m itching to make yet another blog on the other thing I really enjoy doing aside from writing and photography -- achieving coffee nirvana at home on a budget, as I’ve been roasting my own coffee beans at home for almost two years now, and making my early morning brew that would shame Starbucks. Watch out for it!
Before I end, a few tips on photography -- you gotta learn the basics. Forget picture taking first. Go get a book on basic photography, or check them online, or attend a workshop. Without learning the basics, of the principles behind focusing and depth-of-field, of the functions of aperture and shutter speed, of the behavior of light, of the composition guides, you will never progress in your photography. Without learning the basics, occasionally you get lucky, but it is only a matter of chance that you get good pictures. If you want to be consistently getting good pictures, you gotta learn the basics. It’s like math -- you can’t go into calculus without mastering algebra.
And once you learn to shoot properly, spend more time shooting than Photoshopping. For me, a picture that needs a lot of post processing on the computer for it to be presentable belongs to the trash.
And yes, it’s not about how hitech your equipment is, not about how long the zoom, how high the megapixels. Largely, it’s still the CPU between your ears that counts. Many of my festival pictures that were exhibited at the Cultural Center a few years ago were taken with a 3-megapixel Olympus that looks like a toy camera.
My kababayan Arlene (sunshineleneforlife.com), as we were driving from Iligan to GenSan yesterday, complained that the very first picture she uploaded on DeviantArt got criticized, and so she stopped uploading. Don’t give up, learn the basics, and come back with a vengeance. To those of you who choose to photoblog, please learn photography the proper way, and show to the world the real Mindanao. g0Rs October 31st, 2008, 01:47 PM PNP focuses on safeguarding cemeteries in Iligan
ICC Iligan City (31 October) -- The Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) will be deploying more police personnel in different cemeteries within the city starting today, Oct. 31, in line with the celebration of "Undas" or the all saints and all souls day on November 1-2, this year, respectively.
This, as the Philippine National Personal (PNP) is considering the possibility that other people would take advantage of the present situation where residents will be leaving their houses with no one to take care of their properties, during these occasions.
Along this line, we are encouraging everyone to help the PNP by being more responsible enough and not give the lawless elements the opportunity to launch their illegal activities in the city, P/Insp. Melfin Ian Burlat, ICPO Police Community Relations Officer (PCRO) explained.
Burlat said there are non-governmental organizations (NGO) like the Task Force San Miguel and Task Force Serveros that will be tapped by ICPO to become force multipliers who will assist the police in their operations during the period.
Starting Oct. 31, Police Assistance Centers (PAC) will be established in different cemeteries because we expect volumes of people who will be coming in and out of the city, visiting their departed loved ones.
Uniformed police personnel will be deployed to man the PAC and oversee the peace and order condition and to conduct links with the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in monitoring and detecting the possible entry of improvised explosive devices (IED) that maybe placed by the lawless elements.
Police personnel especially the City Police Mobile Force will also be deployed in major thoroughfares and vital installations in the city, who will conduct routine patrol, he also said.
So far, everything is set and always ready to attain any eventuality that may occur so that the desired peace will be attained most especially in this moment when Christians are celebrating this yearly event, Burlat added. (DJR/PIA 10)

g0Rs October 31st, 2008, 03:41 PM Just Around the Coffee Shop: Revving up for the PAASCU Visit
Written by Butch Antolin Alcudia III
The time has come for Saint Michael's College to become a University.
Over its 94 years of existence, the institution has been modest in its accomplishments and contributions to social transformation.
But to reach its goal before its centennial year, Saint Michael's College has gone through massive transformation of its own focusing on four major areas: research, instruction, policy and extension.
Thus, come October 6 - 7, 2008, a panel of experts from the Philippine Association of Accredited Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) will be in campus to accredit
its Level III application.
The challenge now lies in each of the hands of the different stakeholders of the institution be it the administrators, faculty, staff, students, the alumni community and its network of partners.
The PAASCU visit is the spring board to the Michaelite Dream: Saint Michael' s University.
Let's take the leap...together!

“Ranaw” on extended run
Cheering audiences have filled to watch IPAG’s latest theatre favorite, “Ranaw: Isang Alamat” (Ranaw: A Legend). The first 17-run series of this dance-musical opened Sept. 13 and closed Sept. 25.
A second 10-run series has been set Nov.10 - 14, at the MSU-IIT Mini Theatre, to accommodate demand from more audiences to watch the play. Drawing from its “matinee” appeal with its “general patronage” content, “Ranaw” attracted the audiences for its compelling music, dance, story, and visuals. The play won in the 1985 Playwriting Contest of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and has received a number of acclamations since its first major tour in the 1980’s.
A Davao City road show is set starting in January 21, 2009.
The dance-music play presents our pre-colonial tribes in turmoil that prophesy our fragmented state today. Dug from the research of the late Dionisio Orellana, the play chronicles the journey of a lesser known Mindanao epic hero Bato Lakungan who traverses triumphs and painful reversals of fortunes in his attempts to unite the North-Central Mindanao tribes. “Ranaw” was produced under an NCCA subsidy. It is set to go on tour in Davao City in the third week of January, 2009.
Poetry to Performance
[watch "Origami" video excerpt]
IPAG offers Tula Tugma sa Dula for the Philippine Arts Festival in 2009. Poems written by some of the leading poets based in the South will be transformed into a multi-media experience. This popularizes poetry to a wider audience as the word transcreating into movement, sound, and color.
Collaborating with our performing artists, choreographers, and composers are wordsmiths whose work will be reshaped: Marge Evasco, Anthony Tan, Ralph Galan, Henry Opulencia, German Gervacio, and Christine Godine-Ortega. It premieres February 11, 2009 at the MSU-IIT Rooftop Theatre in Iligan City.
“Tales” and "Tatlo" continue to delight
IPAG’s long-running “Tales From Mindanao” and its sequel "Tatlo sa Isa" completed its 1st leg of a national tour last August thrilling Manila as it has done in the last 17 years playing to full houses and captivating audiences. (IPAG estimates this string of dance-music vignettes has fascinated almost a million audiences around the country and the world.)
Davao hosts the 2nd leg which begins in the 3rd week of November. “Tales” and its sequel “Tatlo Sa Isa” are set to hit the provinces of Davao and South Cotabato again this season, and Cagayan de Oro in February, 2009.

Filipino scholar has found new source of coherent light - DOST
10/29/2008 | 08:30 PM
MANILA, Philippines — A Filipino scientist currently studying in the United States has found a new source of coherent light, like lasers, which only potentially needs lower power to operate, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) said on Wednesday.
In a press statement, the DOST's Science Education Institute (DOST-SEI) said Ryan Balili, together with his adviser David Snoke of University of Pittsburgh, were able to demonstrate that the transition of particles into waves could be done at higher temperature which would require lesser power to generate.
The phenomenon is called Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC), named after Indian physicist Satyendranath Bose who worked on the statistics of monoatomic ideal gases and Albert Einstein who speculated this macroscopic coherent state.
“Einstein proposed that at very low temperatures a certain type of identical particles, now called bosons, would’collapse,’ or condense, into a single quantum mechanical wave.
“However, in Balili’s work, he was able to demonstrate the same phenomenon at higher temperatures using polaritons, an energy particle which exists only in a medium that can be polarized by an electromagnetic wave," the statement explained.
It quoted Balili as saying that the main challenge was making the polariton transition into a BEC even if polaritons exist only for very short times, approximately a few picoseconds.
Nevertheless, Balili and his adviser were able to trap polaritons which turned into a single, spatially compact condensate of gas analogous to atomic BEC.
“One way to think of a polariton BEC is that it is a state of matter that has some of the properties of a laser and some of the properties of a superconductor," the DOST-SEI statement said.
Balili and his group at the University of Pittsburgh said that what they were able to show is that the emitted light of the polariton BEC and its electrons are coherent, which is a property of superconductors that allows it to make electric current flow without resistance and wavelike interference of electrical signals.
He said that the most promising applications of the polaritons BEC are in optical devises which takes advantage of laser-like sources at low-power coherent light sources.
“This may be useful for signaling, switching, and amplification in optical communications," he said.
Balili, a 2002 summa cum laude Bachelor of Science in Physics graduate of the Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology, is currently taking up his doctorate in Physics at the University of Pittsburgh where he also finished his Master of Science in Physics.
Balili was a scholar of the DOST during his undergraduate years.
Dr. Ester B. Ogena, director of the DOST-SEI, lauded Balili’s work saying his discovery is a manifestation of the caliber of scholars the DOST is getting every year.
“We are the germination box of soon-to-be great names in the science and technology world. Balili is just one of them and every year we get around 3,500 scholars who in the future would propel the Philippines into first world status," she said in the statement.
Ogena expressed optimism that more DOST-SEI scholars would make a mark in science and technology with the implementation of the Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP) and the Engineering Research and Development for Technology Program (ERDTP) which provides students to proceed to the MS and PhD studies as a scholar.
“We are beefing up our critical mass of scientists and engineers through the ASTHRDP and ERDTP by providing them with scholarships in our top universities," she said.
Ogena avowed to continuously entice students to venture into science careers through promotional programs and scholarship grants.
“We shall be at the forefront of science and technology human resources development and create the necessary critical mass of scientists and engineers the Philippines needs," she said.

Glamor from Iligan
BY HANNAH M. MURALLA, Special Features Assistant Editor
AT THE HEART of Iligan City in Northern Mindanao, a fashion entrepreneur is creating a line of eclectic accessories inspired by two different cultures.
Farah Abu, 26, owns GLAM, short for Great Love for Accessories Matters, a homegrown boutique that sells an array of accessories. Ms. Abu, who graduated with a degree in architecture from the University of Sto. Tomas, decided to move back to her hometown to start her own business.
"Having stayed at both Iligan and Manila for quite a long time, I learned the differences in women’s tastes. The women in Mindanao like glamor, so crystals and pearls appeal to them more. While most of these designs click in Manila, a lot of women there are very much attracted to wood," said Ms. Abu.
Depending on the design and the inspiration for a particular trinket, Ms. Abu’s wares can be made of cultured pearls or german crystals. Ceramics, shells and stones, and sometimes, Swarovski crystals are also used for customized designs. "I usually use hot pink with black as it represents femininity in a more hip level and it’s an attractive color combination for women," she said.
The budding designer’s love for fashion can be traced back to her high school days at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology. Ms. Abu recalled how she would make the clothes featured in magazines herself when the stores in Iligan didn’t have them.
"I love inventing new designs and reconstructing old clothes. And in fashion accessory-making, the possibilities are endless. There are so many designs you can try with so many stones. It excites me to even just think about it," she said.
Starting with just six bracelets displayed at a convenience store counter in 2003, Ms. Abu later sold accessories at her sister’s dormitory and consigned some products at a stall in the Ninoy Aquino International Airport. Back in Iligan, she sold through dealers and over the Internet. Finally, in September 2006, her very own GLAM boutique was unveiled.
"Each design is limited and exclusive. I barely make two pieces for each design because I keep on making new ones. Now I have workers to make my designs so I can conceptualize faster," she said.
Ms. Abu did have her share of start-up difficulties: choosing a name and a logo for her business, laboring over the store’s construction and interior design, what to sell and how to market her wares. Thankfully, her whole family continuously gave her a boost of encouragement. "A family’s moral support is really important in opening a business. It’d be so much harder without them," she said.
Ms. Abu believes a business wouldn’t be worth pursuing if things were that easy. "It’s always nice to be original. Sure, it entails a lot of work but it’s definitely worth the effort, worth the experience. And business is not just all about making money; it has to be something that makes you happy. The income is just a bonus," she said.
The lady behind GLAM joined her first trade fair in August, which opened more doors for her. She plans to join national trade fairs soon and launch an expanded array of products that will include clutches, drawstring bags, beaded lamps, frames, candle-holders, and accessory racks. She plans to have her own clothing line and eventually export her wares.
For more information, contact Farah Abu at glamaccessories@yahoo.com or at 09177162153 and 09228189286. GLAM accessories can be viewed at www.glamaccessories.multiply.com.

g0Rs November 1st, 2008, 10:56 AM RP-wide NBTC D-League kicks off
The National Basketball Training Center (NBTC) D-League sponsored by Nokia has kicked off with eight Luzon-based teams taking the spotlight during the opening ceremonies held recently at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
NBTC director Eric Altamirano said the NBTC D-League envisions itself as a 16-and-under grassroots program that will also serve as a feeder program for varsity squads and teams catering to leagues such as the UAAP, NCAA, Philippine Basketball League, Philippine Basketball Association and the Liga Pilipinas. Players from the league will also be culled to form a team that will compete in the 16 and under FIBA-Asia tournament.
"NBTC's vision is to build a basketball program that serves as a model for Philippine sports and contribute to nation-building by developing the core values necessary to create the greatest generation of Filipino Youth. Core values such as Love for country, passion for the game, Integrity, leadership and commitment to excellence,"said Altamirano, a former national player and former Purefoods champion coach during the opening ceremonies that was attended by the players, supporters, parents, local government officials and basketball stakeholders.
The opening rites were attended by Nokia marketing head Sandeep Khanna, Ito Lopa of TAO Corp., SBP project director Rajko Toroman and TAO Corp. Val Victa, among others. The tournament is under the wings of the Samahang Basketball ng Pilipinas headed by telecoms mogul Manny Pangilinan and executive director Noli Eala.
In the games that followed Health Solutions-Laguna beat Quezon Power Lucena (70-37); B-MEG Batangas nipped Dasmariñas-Cavite (72-64), Quezon Power-Lucena beat B-MEG Batangas (86-64) and Health Solutions-Laguna beat Dasmariñas-Cavite (89-23) for the South Luzon games.
The North Luzon games saw the Lubao Bulls beat Olongapo (70-62); Tarlac beat Nueva Ecija Foundation (80-74); Nueva Ecija bested Olongapo (62-60) and Lubao Bulls routed Tarlac (73-37).
The players and coaches were formed through talent-identification camps. Through the help of LGU's and private sectors, 29 city/club teams with eight teams each from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao, and five teams from NCR are part of the first Nokia NBTC D-League boys divisions. For the girls, a separate tournament will be held in February.
To be featured in the Nov. 8 NCR opening are Antipolo, Manila, Quezon City and Pasig (BMEG Dynamix Calata) and Bulacan.
The Mindanao teams are Oro Grande-CDO (Cagayan de Oro), Team Misor (Misamis Oriental), Iligan Fireflies (Iligan City), Iligan Black Viper (Iligan City), Saints (General Santos), Energen (Davao), Megavia Southmin (Davao) and Montana Pawnshop (Davao).
The Visayas teams are Santos Petroleum Corp (Iloilo), Dumaguete Suy (Bacolod), IEC Computers (Bacolod), 888 Chinatown (Bacolod), Daisy Condensada (Cebu), M Lhuillier Kwarta Padala-South, M Lhulllier Kwarta Padala-North and Penshoppe (Cebu). www.philstar.com

Alingatong November 2nd, 2008, 11:48 PM $1B in ODA sought for Mindanao railway (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW110308/content.php?id=052)
THE GOVERNMENT is seeking as much as $1 billion in foreign aid to fund the construction of one part of the planned Mindanao railway system, which is expected to drive economic development in the conflict-torn region.
Construction of the project is expected to start by the fourth quarter of next year, and will most likely drag on until after the term of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who has made the project one of her administration’s top priorities.
"What’s important is we get it started and that finally, Mindanao will have a railway system," Transport Undersecretary Guiling A. Mamondiong said in an interview last week.
Mrs. Arroyo in late June formed the Mindanao Railways Project Policy and Coordinating Committee composed of Transportation Secretary Leandro R. Mendoza, Public Works Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr. and Budget Secretary Rolando G. Andaya, Jr. as members, with House Speaker Prospero C. Nograles as the group’s adviser.
The committee will advise the Office of the President on prioritization and schedule of implementation of the various railway lines in the South, serve as the "coordinating and issue-resolution" body; and submit a development plan to the President for approval not later than Dec. 1.
Mr. Mamondiong said the government has approached Poland, Saudi Arabia, and Spain for overseas development assistance (ODA) for the project, which is estimated to cost around $800 million to $1 billion — more than the initial estimate of around $700 million for the project.
Phase 1 of the project, which is a 120-kilometer stretch of railway that will pass through the Cagayan de Oro to Iligan industrial corridor, will be awarded to bidders through a build-operate-transfer agreement, he said.
The railway system will also link two vital Mindanao gateways, Mr. Mamondiong said. These are the Laguindingan International Airport and the Mindanao Container Terminal. It will have passenger and cargo operations.
The route is being prioritized, since the covered stretch is the industrial gateway and a key trade center of Mindanao.
Mr. Mamondiong said clashes between the military and separatist Muslim groups in the southern part of the Philippines would not be a concern since the area that the railway would cover is "the most peaceful part of Mindanao."
He said the DOTC was bidding out to local firms the contract for the feasibility study.
"Any time now, it will be awarded," he said.
In a statement last September, Mr. Nograles, who also represents the Davao’s first district in Congress, said the project was expected to be an efficient, reliable and affordable mode of transportation in Mindanao.
The project will spur development, attract foreign investments and create thousands of jobs in the region, he said.
The planned Mindanao railway consists of a criss-crossing network of lines linking Cagayan de Oro to Iligan, Iligan to Zamboanga City, and Cagayan de Oro to Agusan and Surigao, as well as extensions to Davao and General Santos cities.
The plan for a Mindanao railway started with former President Fidel V. Ramos. It was revived by his successor Joseph Estrada, but the project failed to take off. — P.L.G. Montecillo

tonight November 3rd, 2008, 10:54 AM Good evening Iligan :)
tonight November 3rd, 2008, 11:29 AM Baguio ready to play for RP
National basketball coach Yeng Guiao is now in the process of consulting his predecessors before announcing his 14-man lineup this coming week and calling for a first practice on Nov. 17 but sources said yesterday at least two new players will be named for the team representing the country at the FIBA-Asia Championships next year.
Guiao is also making the rounds of the players in his wish list, finding out if they're willing to sacrifice for flag and country.
The predecessors Guiao is consulting are Robert Jaworski, Norman Black, Joseph Uichico and Chot Reyes.
The "rookies" in Guiao's cast reportedly include Red Bull's Cyrus Baguio and Sta. Lucia Realty's Ryan Reyes. The others are holdovers from previous national squads with at least one player coming from each PBA club.
Asked to comment on his possible selection, Baguio said it hasn't been confirmed by Guiao but admitted being asked if he could serve.
"Of course, it would be an honor to play for our country, if I'm invited," said Baguio. "I wouldn't mind even being a benchwarmer. I know coach Yeng's system so I'll be able to adjust quickly to whatever he has in mind. If given the chance, I'll definitely give my best."
Baguio, 28, was Red Bull's second round draft choice in 2003 and hardly played as a freshman, seeing action in only four games. Because of his limited playing time, Baguio seriously thought of quitting the game.
""We were full in my position with stars like Willie (Miller), Vince (Hizon), Junthy (Valenzuela) and Lordy (Tugade) so it's understandable why I hardly played," he said. "But I persevered. When coach Yeng gave me chance to play, I did my best to earn my minutes."
Baguio's rise to stardom was almost like a Cinderella fairy tale. His scoring average increased year after year from 2.5 to 5.7 to 7.7 to 11.3 and last season, to 18.0 with a single-game career high of 37 points. Now, he's touted as the Barakos' chief Bull.
* * *
Baguio said his secret to improving is watching his games on tape.
"I look at how I played and how my opponents played and I try to learn from what I observe," he said. "I go hard in every practice because what you practice, you do in a game. If our practice starts at 10, I try to be in the gym at 8 and I stay after practice for extra shooting or extra workouts for about 30 minutes to an hour. I sleep early and eat right. I'm always focused on my game."
Baguio said he's lucky Guiao is his coach. "I believe in coach Yeng's system," he went on. "There are no stars in our team. Everyone knows his role. We learn from each other. We play together as a team."
Although he is an explosive player with highly individualistic skills, Baguio said what drives him is the team goal to win championships.
"I never won a championship in high school and college and I've won only one so far with Red Bull in 2006," he said. "I played high school basketball in Iligan, my hometown, then went to Cebu for my senior year. My uncle Ric Ric Marata brought me to Manila for college. I was offered a half scholarship to play for La Salle but because I couldn't afford to pay, I went to another school. I was accepted by UST where I played four years with teammates like Niño Gelig, Richard Yee and Dale Singson. Jojo Duncil was in Team B when I was on my last year."
* * *
Baguio said Steve Nash is his idol because of the Phoenix guard's orientation as a team player. But he also admires Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson and LeBron James for their individual skills.
Baguio said he has some units left before earning an Economics degree but deferred going back to school to pursue his PBA ambition. He will reenroll in time to finish his education.
Baguio, the youngest of three children, started playing basketball in Grade 3. His father Efren was a player, too, but at 5-7, didn't go far. He said basketball is in his blood because his father and uncles were all players.
In the PBA, Baguio said Red Bull is beginning to jell after a shaky start. "We're like brothers in the team," he said. "We help each other out. If there's something wrong, we try to find a solution. We lost our first three games but not by much. Now, we're blending and starting to win again."
Guiao brought in five new players in the offseason and Red Bull struggled at the onset to build chemistry. The recruits were Gabby Espinas, Larry Rodriguez, Jeff Chan, Paolo Hubalde and Nat Cruz. Back in the lineup are Baguio, Duncil, Leo Najorda, Celino Cruz, Warren Ybanez, Mike Hrabak, Carlo Sharma and Magnum Membrere. Rich Alvarez was recently traded to Purefoods.
As Red Bull's go-to guy, Baguio said he's not necessarily the last option. "It's all up to coach Yeng," he said. "We believe in him. We do what he thinks is best for our team."
Guiao's success in the pros is an indication of good things to come for the national squad. - Joaquin M. Henson (Philstar News Service, www.philstar.com)
Alingatong November 3rd, 2008, 01:20 PM 11th Philippine Web Awards (PWA) List of Nominees
http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_5LZFBy22PXs/SQ7NR8N9R7I/AAAAAAAAGaQ/1sg5zvoqLgA/s320/PWAsemifinalist-badge-1.jpg
The Philippine Web Awards released their shortlist of 100 Filipino blogs and websites vying for 18 categories this year.
Supporters and followers of the 11th Philippine Web Awards (PWA) will finally get their chance to vote for their favorite Web sites, either via e-mail or text messaging (SMS), starting Nov. 10, 2008. The entry that receives the most number of votes in its group will win the Peoples’ Choice Award for that category.
On December 31, 2008, the list of semifinalists would be trimmed down by a panel of judges to five finalists per category. For this year, 100 semifinalists, spread over 18 categories, have qualified. Last year, the 10th PWA had 95 semifinalists and 15 categories.
While the PWA rules allow for 10 semifinalists per category, this year, only one category has the full count- Community & Portal. All the other categories have fewer than 10. In fact, for three- Celebrities & Personalities, Lifestyle & Leisure, and eLGU-Provinces- only three entries for each category qualified as semifinalists.
Both SMS and online voting would end on the eve of the awards night at exactly 12 midnight on Feb. 26 next year. Winners will be announced during the awarding ceremonies on Feb. 27, and will be published in the PWA site.
Meanwhile, entries that will make it to the finals round (to be announced on Dec. 31) will all be in the running for the Best Web Site Award in their respective categories. The winners will be chosen by a panel of judges based on a set criteria which can also be found in the PWA site. The finals judges- a different set from the pre-finals panel– are experts in different fields and include media practitioners, artists and Web developers.
Finals judging will run from Jan. 15 to Feb. 15. The decision of each judge will be sent to and tabulated by PWAs auditors who will keep the results under lock and key, and will open them only on the Awards Night itself.

g0Rs November 4th, 2008, 02:21 PM Iligan PNP ready to respond to any eventuality even after "Undas"
ICC Iligan City (4 November) -- The Iligan City Police Office (ICPO) is ready to respond and act on any eventualities that may occur in our area of responsibility, even after the peaceful and successful celebration of "Undas," last November 1 & 2.
This assurance came from P/Insp. Melfin Ian Burlat, Police Community Relations Officer (PCRO) of ICPO in a recent press briefing at the Information Command Center (ICC), Philippine Information Agency, this city.
Burlat said the peaceful celebration of "Undas" was attributed to the joint and collaborated efforts of ICPO, the non-governmental sector and other law enforcement groups in maintaining peace and order situation of the city.
No untoward incident occurred in the cemeteries. People had observed the holidays with solemnity and were vigilant and anxious to cooperate as to the security measures implemented by ICPO.
"Up to the moment, we are still in full alert status as mandated by the PNP national head quarters placing the entire police force throughout the country because of the past holiday observance and are only waiting for the downgrading of the order," Burlat said.
Meanwhile, he revealed that the Iligan Reformatory Center, Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP), has requested the Iligan City Mobile Group for assistance to augment its security force.
The request was made due to the presence of Tony Angne, alias Commander Mercury of the lawless MILG group (LMG) who was recently captured by the 15the Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army is now being detained at the said reformatory.
Said LMG leader is facing various criminal charges for the offenses he committed against our Constitution, Burlat also said. (LVG/PIA Iligan)

g0Rs November 4th, 2008, 02:33 PM 22 schools join Square Off's 'Frank-ahan'
abs-cbnNEWS.com | 10/28/2008 7:07 PM
Square Off kicks off its latest season with an even wider array of collegiate teams battling it out for the honor of representing their school and the country in the 2009 Asian Universities Debating Championship (AUDC) in Dhaka.
The all-expense paid trip to the AUDC is being sponsored by Sen. Frank Drilon, a well-known advocate of youth empowerment and social justice. Also a prominent lawyer, Sen Drilon threw his support behind the Square Off because "debate espouses the highest ideals of democracy."
Dubbed Frank-ahan: The Drilon Debates, 22 schools from all over the country are participating.
The top contenders in the previous season, like Ateneo de Manila, UP Diliman, De La Salle University, Ateneo De Zamboanga, Silliman University, and Xavier University, are all back.
New challengers include La Salle Bacolod, Ateneo De Naga, UP Iloilo, Mindanao State University-Iligan, and University of San Juan de Recoletos.
In all, 9 participants are from Metro Manila, 3 come from Northern Luzon, while Visayas and Mindanao are sending 5 teams each.
"We took special pains to invite little-known teams from the provinces to give them the kind of national exposure they deserve," says Square Off Moderator and executive producer, Twink Macaraig.
"With such a mix, the audience will be in for more color and quite a few surprises - like last year's unexpected standout performances from Mindanao State University-Marawi, and PMA," she said.
Capitalizing on the diversity of schools represented, Square Off will also feature live shots of viewers in select provinces to capture the excitement of fans cheering on their home teams.
Square Off - Frankahan: The Drilon Debates airs on ABS-CBN News Channel (ANC) Wednesdays at 8pm, with replays at 1pm Thursday, and 2pm Saturday.

· DOH-CHD to hire health personnel for hinterland evacuation centers
NPA still in cahoots with the MILF – Adriatico
Nunungan, LDN flashflood victims receive food assistance
NDCC releases Php10,000 assistance to all dead civilian victims of LMG
Community assemblies top Army’s 1st CMOU activities
TFHAIDP drums up rehab plan to end conflict situation in LDN
DOH-CHD to hire health personnel for hinterland evacuation centers
ICC Iligan City, Nov. 5 – The Dept. of Health, Center for Health Development (DOH-CHD), region 10, is planning to assign a nurse and a midwife, to help monitor the health conditions of the internally displaced persons (IDP) of Lanao del Norte (LDN).
Thus revealed Dr. David Mendoza, Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit Chief and Head of the Emergency Health Team, DOH-CHD-10, during a media briefing at the Information Command Center (ICC), Philippine Information Agency, this city.
Such measure is undertaken by DOH-CHD-10 to partly solve the problem on the lack of health personnel in the hinterland towns of the province having the most congested evacuation centers (EC), he said.
These health personnel, however, will be hired on contractual basis and assigned in the EC’s of Munai and Poona Piagapo towns to help administer, among others, the injectable anti-biotics and intravenous (IV) fluids that DOH-CHD-10 will be providing the IDP’s through their respective Municipal Health Units.
Meanwhile, Mendoza said Munai has a water supply problem owing to its leaking tanks destroyed by the heavy rains resulting in the increased number of gastro intestinal (GI) cases in its EC’s.
Because of this, DOH-CHD-10 will be providing Munai with 200 units of hypo-chloride solution for household chlorination, aside from its recommendation to the LDN provincial government to help beef up and strengthen the potability of water in the area.
As to the problem on the lack of latrines in the EC’s, DOH-CHD-10 has compromised to construct one latrine for every 50 IDP’s because we don’t have the resources to follow the standard of the World Health Organization (WHO) that there should be one latrine for every 20 persons, he said.
“So that we were able to construct only 30 latrines in Munai, out of the needed more than 100 and 20 others in Tangkal and additional five (5) seats in Riverside, Kolambugan, a coastal town attacked by the lawless MILF group (LMG) last Aug. 18.,” he added. (RCA/PIA10)
NPA still in cahoots with the MILF – Adriatico
ICC Iligan City, Nov. 5– The New Peoples’ Army (NPA) had an alliance with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) since 2003.
This was confirmed by Lt. Col. Agane0Adriitico, Civil Military Operations (CMO) Chief, G7, First Infantry Division (IID), Philippine Army, during a recent press briefing at the Information Command Center, (ICC), Philippine Information Agency, this city.
Adriatico said immediately after the Aug.18 atrocities, Ka Oris of the NPA came out with a pronouncement that they are going to support the MILF in conducting offensive operations against the military.
Aside from that, our government troops who are conducting law enforcement operations pursuing the lawless MILF group (LMG) in the Lanao provinces have found documents in abandoned LMG camps that the NPA’s are still in cahoots with the MILF, he said.
Meanwhile, the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) has assured the residents of the Lanao provinces that it is ready to meet such offensive action to be conducted by the left-leaning groups and the MILF.
Adriatico also clarified that the AFP knows their plans and always prepared and ready to address any eventuality that the purging of the two rebel groups may result. (DJR/ PIA/10)
Nunungan, LDN flashflood victims receive food assistance
ICC Iligan City, Nov. 5 – The Provincial Disaster Coordinating Council (PDCC) of Lanao del Norte (LDN) has provided food and relief assistance to families affected by the flashflood in Nunungan town.
The assistance is in addition to those given by the local government unit which provided food packs containing noodles, rice and sardines immediately to the affected families, Corazon Villondo, Municipal Social Welfare Officer of Nunungan said.
The flashflood resulted from the heavy rains that occurred last October 31 causing the Sabaan River to overflow in Sitio Dipa, Barangay Mangan which also affected the nearby Barangay Rarab, in the said municipality.
Villondo said at least 30 families with 73 dependents were displaced due to the incident and are now staying with their relatives living far away from the flood-affected area.
Likewise, two (2) persons were confirmed dead after they drowned due to the incident: Macagila Maginda, 35 years old and her 2-year old daughter Fatima while two others, Dulao Maliawao, 62, and Pisawangan Binasing, 63 were reported missing and believed to have been carried by the flood.
Nineteen (19) farm animals were lost while six (6) houses have been reported partially damaged and nine (9) others were totally damaged with an estimated cost of Pph350,000. Villondo also said. (LVG/PIA Iligan)
NDCC releases Php10,000 assistance to all dead civilian victims of LMG
ICC Iligan City, Nov. 5 – All the civilian victims who died during the Aug. 18 atrocities committed by the lawless MILF group (LMG) in Lanao del Norte (LDN) have been covered by the financial assistance provided by the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC).
Thus revealed Ana Cañeda, LDN Coordinator of Office of Civil Defense (OCD) region 10, during a recent media briefing at the Information Command Center (ICC), Philippine Information Agency, this city.
Cañeda said NDCC through OCD-10 has already released the financial assistance of Php10,000 individual checks to the beneficiaries of all the 38 civilian victims who died during the Aug. 18, 2008 LMG attack in Kauswagan and Kolambugan, both coastal towns of the province.
Likewise, OCD-10 was able to release the Php5,000 financial assistance for each of only 21 out of the 66 persons who were injured during the incident.
“This is because the other 45 injured still need to complete their documents for processing, such as, medical certificate, police blotters and certificate of residency from the LGU concerned, among others,” Cañeda said.
Once these requirements are complied with and submitted to us, OCD-10 will immediately forward it to NDCC so that the financial assistance intended for the injured victims will be released, she assured. (OSM-Radyo ng Bayan)
Community assemblies top Army’s 1st CMOU activities
ICC Iligan City, Nov. 5 – The conduct of community assemblies and dialogues comprised the bulk of accomplishment for the Philippine Army’s First Civil Military Operations (CMO) Unit, CMO Group.
Thus disclosed Maj. Benvenido Manquiquis, Commander of the 1st CMOU, CMOG whose unit is based at the Advance Command Post of the First Infantry Division (IID), PA in Maria Cristina, Iligan City.
Manquiquis said the participation of his unit in community assemblies, activities and projects like sports events, cleanliness drives, tree planting, has improved their relationship with the people.
Some of these community projects include the drafting of provincial/ city Integrated Area Community Public Safety Plans such as those of Zamboanga del Sur, Lanao del Sur and Iligan City.
“During these assemblies, we tell the community of the importance of the role of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), particularly in national development and in issues relative to the improvement of peace and order in our area of responsibility (AOR),” he also said.
Meanwhile, a total of 7,056 persons benefitted from the medical and dental civic action program (MEDCAP) initiated by the 1st CMOU, CMOG from the period January to September, this year, in coordination with the other health service agencies of the government and non-governmental organizations (NGO).
Closed coordination with the various offices of the local government units and line government agencies, as well as, the unit’s participation in activities initiated by cause-oriented groups, NGO’s and peoples organizations within its AOR has also strengthened the relationship of the unit with the stakeholders.
On the other hand, some 1,950 students attended the symposia conducted by 1st CMOU, CMOGS in schools which are aimed at gaining support, cooperation and trust of the people, Manquiquis added. (RCA/PIA10)
TFHAIDP drums up rehab plan to end conflict situation in LDN
ICC Iligan City, Nov. 5 – The Task Force on Humanitarian Assistance for the Internally Displaced Persons (TFHAIDP) in Mindanao is now drumming up the Rehabilitation Plan of Lanao del Norte (LDN).
“This is because the TF wants an early implementation of the plan and at least see an end to the conflict situation of the province,” Ana Cañeda, LDN Coordinator of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), region 10, said.
She said the plan includes the provision of livelihood assistance to the affected IDP families of LDN and only needs the endorsement of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) in the region to the National DCC to match it with the assistance and expertise from the national government agencies.
It will also tap its local counterparts already built-in to the plan who have specified the assistance that they need from the NGA’s and from the NGA’s themselves who can access funds from the civil society groups and international NGO’s including the United Nations system.
Meanwhile, she said the community kitchen is being used in giving food assistance to the IDP’s in the evacuation centers the province to make sure the assistance will reach their intended beneficiaries.
On the other hand, OCD-10 is preparing for the possibility that there will be additional evacuees as a result of the recent incident in Magsaysay town where six (6) persons died after the driver of a passenger jeep was gunned down resulting the vehicle he was driving in to collide with the hilly terrain in the area.
“The incident may result in the displacement and movement of people although we would like to think that the affected families have been calmed down by Congressman Abdulah Dimaporo himself, considering that it might be a case of ‘rido’ or a family feud, she said.
We fear for possible reprisal from the aggrieved groups, so we are ready with our supplies and resources which we have already prepositioned to address and respond to these movements, if ever,” Cañeda added. (RCA/PIA10)

"ZukiChirO" November 6th, 2008, 07:42 AM State counsel hits high court ruling on mooted land deal
MANILA, Philippines - The Supreme Court has encroached on the Executive’s powers when it ruled against a moot territorial deal with Moro rebels, the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG) said.
In a constancia filed with the high court, the state lawyer said: "This honorable court went after an abandoned and unsigned draft of the (Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain or MoA-AD] and breached the barrier between the Executive and the Judiciary by chasing after and deliberately targeting an abandoned and unsigned draft document, thus indicating a future trend of court interference in areas exclusive to the other branches of the government."
A constancia conveys a party’s displeasure on a decision.
The OSG said the high court’s actuations "[expose] the Executive department to possible embarrassment and ridicule in the eyes of gloating petitioners, including the international community."
Gleo Guerra, Supreme Court officer-in-charge of the public information office, said the high court "will still have to act on [the OSG note]."
On Oct. 14, the high court declared as unconstitutional the territorial deal with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF).
This, despite earlier pronouncements from the Executive that it has dropped the controversial MoA-AD and will not pursue it in any form.
The MoA-AD would have included in a referendum 712 provinces from Palawan in Luzon, and South Cotabato, Zamboanga City, Sultan Kudarat, North Cotabato, Lanao del Norte, and Zamboanga del Sur in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).
The expanded ARMM will be called Bangsamoro Juridical Entity, in which the MILF would have had wide fiscal, political and religious authority.
Political leaders and local government officials have asked the high court to resolve the deal’s constitutionality lest it be revived in the future.
Solicitor General Agnes V.S.T. Devanadera said the high court could exercise its powers to control and check grave abuses of discretion, but there was no controversy to speak of since the MoA-AD has been dropped, and that the Executive has dissolved the peace panel that negotiated it.
The Executive has "decided to take on a different tack and launch talks, no longer with the rebels or rebel groups, but with the more peace-loving community-based groups, focusing the context of the peace talks on disarmament, demobilization and rehabilitation in the pursuit of providing genuine solutions to the violence in Mindanao," the OSG said.
Ms. Devanadera said the MoA-AD cannot "be obliterated with the declaration of unconstitutionality as it had never come to life and had never come into existence at all." - BusinessWorld

BobNewYorkUSA November 7th, 2008, 07:46 AM I had another great visit to Iligan City a couple of weeks ago. It was good to get together with friends and additionally meeting some new ones including some from SSC-Iligan. I walked into a store and as soon as I spoke a few words someone exclaimed " You must be Bob New York " which really took me by surprise.
Although getting on the internet from some of the cafes there on a hit and miss basis, I did try to keep up with things on this site and a few others on a " Read Only " basis as I don't use my website passwords on public PC's. I had set up a couple of messenger accounts specifically for use on public PC's to keep in touch with friends in Iligan and CDO. I don't use a cell phone or txt nor do I have my own laptop. Where I live in the USA, Internet Cafes are non-existant so I enjoyed using some of them in Iligan as for me they are kind of a tourist attraction in itself.
In addition to re visiting some of my favorite places in Iligan such as Jollibee, Red Ribbon, Zoey Cafe ( yes, once again I enjoyed those generous slices of Carrot Cake on several occasions at Zoey ) I now have some sense of being familiar with these places and enjoy returning to them. The receently opened Chow King at Elena Towers was the first one I have had the pleasure of enjoying.
This time I even enjoyed Bowling at Midtown Lanes, the first place I ever bowled that used pinboys instead of Automatic Pinsetters. Many years ago I used to service and repair Automatic Pinsetters. With the operating cost and maintenance requirements those machines require I could easily understand why pinboys are still used in place like Midtown Lanes. Would you pay 10 times the amount charged per game at Midtown now ? Probably not but that is what it would cost you if they had automatic pinsetting machines there. People could not afford to go there any more and the place would close from lack of business. I really enjoyed it and it was quieter and even pleasant without the machine noise.
I enjoyed going to the new Gaisano Mall and in remembering the pre-view pics of it right here on SSC-Iligan it was not a total stranger to me as I entered the main entrance. I once again bought some clothes and a few other things at Gaisano as I had on my last visit.
One slight difficulty I encountered and something that could be a disadvantage to International visitors and tourists is the fact that there are no ATMs that I could find in Iligan that are connected to the international networks. They will work fine if you have a Philippines issued credit card but not one from the USA even though it has the same internationally recognized logo on it such a Visa or Mastercard. This was confirmed by others in Iligan who have relatives and friends that visit from the USA.
The only place that can give a cash advance on a non Philippine credit card is the main branch ( Iligan ) of BDO Bank. I went there when my supply of cash was getting low and their one and only credit card swipe terminal was out of order. ( you can't get cash from their ATM outside the bank ). I was told that it would be two days before someone from Manila could come to Iligan to repair the only card swipe terminal they had at this bank. Someone comming all the way from Manila to repair or replace a plug in card swipe terminal ? That sounds a bit far out for me to believe. Something like this could easily discourage foriegn visitors from spending more money at the smaller independent businesses in Iligan. My card worked just fine at Gaisano and a couple of other places that accept credit card transactions without any difficulty at all.
Another one of my favorite places in Iligan is Club 7 where I enjoyed evenings with friends I have made in Iligan.
I also enjoyed another visit to MSU-IIT which I find to be quite a fascinating place. The buildings designed for the tropical climate of Mindanao demonstrate many differences to what I am accoustomed to seeing here in the northeast of the USA. It was a plesure to visit this university again.
I have just about recovered from the Jet Lag of the long journey home now and can catch up on all the websurfing I missed while I was in Iligan. At times it seemed like I know more about what is happening in Iligan from here via internet than I could while I was actually there ! Somewhat like being in a News Void, since my attention was directed more towards the " Live " sights and sounds I enjoy while I am actually there.
I had a great time !

g0Rs November 7th, 2008, 01:32 PM Iligan city sets "Lakaw Alang sa Kalinaw" on Nov. 16
ICC Iligan City (7 November) -- Around 5,000 individuals are expected to join this year's 'Alay Lakad' (Walk for a Cause) with the local theme, "Lakaw Alang sa Kalinaw" (Walk for Peace) slated November 16, 2008, in the city.
"We choose this theme because we thought that as Filipinos, no gap shall interfere regardless of religion and cultural diversity among the Iliganons especially among the Out-of-School Youth (OSY) who are the beneficiaries of this activity," said Jesse T. Ramiro, Lt. Governor of the Kiwanis International.
Done all over the country, this "Walk for a Cause" is a yearly fund raising project initiated by the Alay Lakad Foundation, Inc., to help the OSY pursue vocational or technical courses, thus, acquire value enhancement education for a better future.
The OSY are members of the Pag-asa Youth Association of the Philippines (PYAP) under the banner program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) through the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
This year, Kiwanis International as head of the finance committee will lead in seeking financial support to produce the needed funding that will ensure to realize the dreams of these needy youth.
Ramiro said the Alay Lakad Foundation, Inc. Iligan Chapter will be sending two (2) PYAP members to take up a one-year Computer Hardware Servicing and Computer Programming for the National Certificate (NC) lV during the 2nd semester of school year 2008-2009.
We are glad that we got confirmation from the Islam groups and other Muslim community in the city for their participation during the actual walk to generate funds and have fun with warm-up exercises/hataw to be done at the converging point at Anahaw Amphitheater, Palao, this city, she added. Octavarium November 7th, 2008, 03:41 PM I had another great visit to Iligan City a couple of weeks ago.

I had a great time !
I agree with your observations. I hope this will reach those who can improve the city. Glad to know you enjoyed your stay. :)

Alingatong November 8th, 2008, 12:03 AM How LCHS Got Its Name
Charles O. Sy
LCHS Spectrum (http://www.geocities.com/lchsspectrum/sp-11-10-08.html)
http://www.geocities.com/lchsspectrum/lchs08.JPG
As LCHS celebrates its 70th Foundation Day, let's take a trip back in time and review how the Alma Mater came to be known as Lanao Chung Hua School.
When the school was established in 1938, it was named Lanao Chinese School (LCS). The founders chose to use "Lanao" as the school was envisioned to serve not only the Chinese Filipino community of Iligan City but also those in the neighboring towns of Lanao as well.
School, however, was interrupted at the outbreak of World War II. In her account of the school's history (Spectrum, Mar. 2, 1998 issue), Fe "Guat Ching" Quimbo wrote that the school ceased operation from 1941 to 1947. It reopened in 1948 when conditions in the country normalized.
Eventually, as the student population grew, the campus moved from its site on Quezon Avenue to a larger and more conducive location on Roosevelt Ext. in 1952. By this time, the school already offered secondary education. A research on school records by current English Department Head, Christine Veronica Uy, shows that the school was renamed Lanao Chinese High School in 1958. Pretty soon, the new acronym "LCHS" became a byword in the city's Tsinoy community.
Following the declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines in 1972, a presidential decree Filipinizing private schools in the country was promulgated. Chinese schools were mandated to adopt a new curriculum and a new name. Thus, in 1976, LCHS was renamed anew as Lanao Community School. By this twist of fate, the school initials reverted to "LCS."
In 1982, at the induction ceremony of the LCS Board of Trustees, the area superintendent for private schools, who was the guest speaker, shared his misconception of LCS as a school. He said he had often heard of a "community" school somewhere in the area that frequently topped government exams. Yet, somehow he could not seem to identify which part of Lanao it was situated. This school, he surmised, must be nestled somewhere in some obscure hinterlands of Lanao del Norte. He had no inkling whatsoever that that school was Lanao Community School, least of all, one run by the Chinese Filipino community of Iligan.
That revelation gave some members of the Tsinoy community food for thought: The name, Lanao Community School, could be misleading as numerous public schools were generally identified as community schools. This motivated a concerned alumnus, Leonardo "Loloy" Tan, to do some brainstorming. Our school, he felt, should bear a name that can be identified with the Tsinoy community.
Sometime in 1986, with the formation of a committee to plan for the transfer of the school to a newly acquired property in Pala-o, Loloy found his chance to bring up his proposal for a new school name. Citing the misconception narrated earlier by the area superintendent as one of the reasons, Loloy proposed that the school be renamed Lanao Chung Hua School. But the idea was met with some dissension. The proposed name, some quarters averred, would never be approved. It still sounded Chinese and ran counter to the spirit of the decree Filipinizing private schools. But for Loloy, it was still worth a try. After all, a school in Cagayan de Oro was permitted to use "Kung Hua."
No serious deliberations on the proposal ensued thereafter. But in time it struck a chord with the school's powers-that-be. And in 1989, when the school opened its doors at its new sprawling campus in Pala-o, it was christened Lanao Chung Hua School. The new name was subsequently enshrined in its registration certificate with the Securities & Exchange Commission in February the following year.
The new name turned out to be an appropriate and smart choice. For it revived the acronym "LCHS," to which generations of students and alumni have endeared themselves all these years.

Theme: Isang Bayan, Urbanidad!– Encompassing all of the aspects of urbanity of the Philippine cities and localities, as one nation in one t-shirt design. Being Filipino both here and abroad aiming for progress for the motherland.
Colour of Background:The design should be well incorporated in a black t-shirt.

T-shirt costs...
The t-shirt would cost approximately from PhP150 to PhP500...but I hope we could find an affordable yet quality t-shirt printers. There may be an additional shipping cost for those living outside Manila.
Another proposal is to have contact persons in cities outside of Metro Manila. We will be sending the said t-shirt design to these contact persons and will be the ones who will print it in their locality.*
*There should be a common consensus regarding the logistics of production and delivery by December 2, 2005.
For the winner of the contest…
He or she is entitled for his/her free t-shirt with his/her design printed on it.
For those interested in having a t-shirt:

The Project Runway Philippines Winner
The long much awaited Project Runway Philippines Season 1 come to an end and the winner has been announced. The three collections look very good individually. Aries, Philip and Veejay really deserves to be in the top 3. I wish I had passes with the Project Runway Philippines live show so I would really feel the vibe!
Rajo Laurel christened the three designers with three names - Philip, the Romantic, Veejay, the Modernist and Aries, the Technician.
So who among these three is the project runway philippines winner?
it’s no other than:
Aries Lagat! Congratulations Aries.
Veejay came in third, reason was his collection was lacking of the wow factor. Philip came in second, because the collection was too much. Aries became the winner because he has successfully delivered a story through his collection. The three were very good and they made my proud to be a Filipino.
I would elaborate more on this weekend about the Project Runway Philippines Winner episode!
Again, congratulations Aries! The first Project Runway Philippines winner. The face of the future Philippine fashion!

g0Rs November 14th, 2008, 08:52 AM Hello Iligan...
Anyone heard about this "Project Runway"?
Apparently an Iliganon won this contest.... Aries Lagat...
Go Iliganons!
http://projectrunwayphilippines.com/project-runway-philippines-winner/#more-38
The Project Runway Philippines Winner
Here are some of the videos of the said competition. I'm just posting the last 3.

GearX November 14th, 2008, 09:13 AM Mindanao designer wins Project Runway (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW111408/content.php?id=161)
Mindanao’s child Aries Lagat emerged the winner in the season one finale of Project Runway Philippines, aired two weeks after taping, and protected by a confidentiality agreement that if broken would’ve netted the ETC network P4 million in damages.
Dubbed "The Technician" by designer and judge Rajo Laurel, Mr. Lagat apparently best exemplifies Philippine fashion today and the new movement emphasizing technical skill combined with a focused (and personal) vision. He won three challenges during the course of the show, including the very first challenge which earmarked "individuality as a designer."
Notably, judges at the final episode held during Fashion Week — namely host Teresa Herrera, regulars Mr. Laurel and Apples Aberin-Sadhwani, and the guest judges designer Cesar Gaupo and accessories designer Rafe Totengco — had good as well as bad things to say about each of the designers’ collections. Not even the winner was spared.
Mr. Lagat was told that his garments were polarized into extremes of strong and weak, with the latter made more so next to the better garments. Finalist Philipp Tampus, dubbed "The Romanticist," was lauded for his "fresh take" in using crochet for ultra-feminine outfits that according to Mr. Totengco were "sexy without being vulgar," but was slapped down for being too free with his embellishments. Whereas finalist Veejay Floresca, dubbed "The Modernist," was praised for the commercial appeal of his garments, but chastised for his fabric choices, and also told the clothes were too simple, without the wow factor shown in the other collections.
The trio told reporters at the press screening that they pretty much knew their strengths and weaknesses by then, and that it was really an either/or decision over whose best feature would win the judges over — Mr. Lagat’s innovation, Mr. Tampus’s canny ability to flatter the female form, or Mr. Floresca’s knack when it comes to wearable and saleable clothing.
And so there was no rancor when Mr. Lagat emerged the victor, awarded with the P500,000 cash prize from Beverly Hills 6750, a fashion spread in MEGA magazine, and the chance to display his creations in SM and also create an RTW collection for SM Department Store.
The next project
It’s back to work for the designers now that Project Runway is done.
Messrs. Lagat and Tampus are putting up shops in Manila (with Mr. Tampus also planning an atelier in Cebu), and organizing their affairs (Mr. Tampus sheepishly admitted he doesn’t have formal receipts drawn up yet and no cards to give away).
Mr. Lagat intends to use the prize money to create a menswear collection — the judges were hardly complimentary during that final challenge of creating a thirteenth "menswear" outfit, but he’s determined to test his creativity — and will show in February next year.
Mr. Floresca is in the process of completing a 45-piece collection to be exhibited at Fashion Week Autumn/Winter 2009 on May. He dreams of designing for the exacting Gretchen Barreto, same with Mr. Tampus who would also like to design for Kris Aquino, while Mr. Lagat wants to dress up their erstwhile host, Ms. Herrera, and actress Alessandra de Rossi.
They are toying with the idea of collaborating, seeing as they’ve all been invited to produce RTW, and their camaraderie is such that repeated objections were made by Project Runway organizers over their propensity to assist each other, when they ought to have been competing in earnest. They pointed out that the "bayanihan" extended by the contenders was what made this Project Runway uniquely Filipino.
The shared motivation for Project Runway contestants, said Mr. Floresca, was to show the world what Filipino designers are made of, what they’re capable of making, and ultimately make an effort to produce a good reality TV program. "We’ve accomplished what we set out to do, regardless of who won or lost," he told reporters.
If not for his stint in Project Runway, Mr. Tampus wouldn’t have been able to stay and work in the Philippines again. He’s glad to have been part of the effort to change people’s notion of designers coming home from the Middle East as being "baduy" (kitschy), along with fellow designers and friends Cary Santiago, Michael Cinco and Fern One.
"This is the reality, Filipinos are the ones who excel abroad... even in the Middle East, the good designers are all Filipino," he said, partly in the vernacular, adding that each of them promote a Filipino aesthetic.
"With my collection, I’m pushing crochet because really the Filipinos are crochet lovers, giving a chance to those hopeful na old people who can do nothing else, that crochet pala can be beautiful."
Jojie Lloren, appointed mentor (and self-appointed "tormentor"), has said time and again that the show’s value lies in educating people on what happens behind the scenes, "not just the glamour, but the real side of fashion," not just the garment, but the people behind its construction and the lengths they go to, blood, toil, tears, sweat and sore muscles (which incidentally was assuaged by a masseuse thoughtfully provided by Ms. Sadhwani).
If anything else, Project Runway Philippines instills the discipline needed in the young designers — and Mr. Lagat would be the first to advise aspirants to be equipped in sewing and pattern-making — while raising the flag for Filipino fashion design.
"Na-realize kung paano mag-isip yung Filipino (They realized how the Filipino thinks). None of us are blind, we can see the work of... these really good Filipino designers recognized abroad. I think it’s time to tell everyone that they don’t have to go there, if only the government and the people will support us, stop buying the international brands and let’s focus on our own local designers, siguro in this way, who knows, we might return to being the fashion capital of Asia," said Mr. Lagat in the vernacular.
Plans are not yet finalized for Project Runway Philippines Season Two (although rumor has it that SM will be a major sponsor) and viewers are advised to look to the ETC Web site for updates. — J.D. Poblete
g0Rs November 14th, 2008, 09:24 AM Mindanao Super Region projects on target–MEDCo (http://balita.ph/2008/11/13/mindanao-super-region-projects-on-target-medco/)
November 13, 2008 9:44 am by pna
DAVAO CITY, Nov. 13 — Completion targets for projects pipelined under the Super Regions development strategy of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Mindanao are on stream and duly funded, Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) chair undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana said.
Leyretana said topping the list of the Mindanao super region projects is the P7.853-billion Laguindingan International Airport Development Project in Misamis Oriental.
However, he said the project will not be completed by 2010, which is the time frame of most of Mrs. Arroyo’s Super Region projects.
“Except for Laguindingan airport project, all the other Mindanao super region projects will be completed by 2010,” Leyretana said.
The completion of infrastructure development projects in 2010-2011 is expected to boost the agri-business potentials of the entire Mindanao Super Region.
A contract was signed between the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), the implementing agency, and Yosshin Engineering for consultancy services on the construction supervision of the airport project last December 2007.
Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction, a South Korean company, has yet to start construction of the airport’s runway.
Projected for completion in November 2011, the airport is expected to cater to international and domestic flights, boosting the region's capacity for added investments.
According to the January 2008 "Status of Mindanao Super Region Projects" prepared by MEDCo, five other "Super Region" projects were added recently.
These are the P861-million Iligan City Circumferential Road in Lanao del Norte; the P12.731-million Lanao del Norte Provincial Hospital; Jatropha Nurseries in Bukidnon; the P1.682-billion Agus 3 Hydroelectric Power Plant in Pantas, Lanao del Norte; and the P1.856-billion Agus 6 Hydroelectric Power Plant Uprating Project in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte.
President Arroyo earlier announced that her Super Regions project got a 7 billion dollars (P364 billion) boost from China, Japan, and the World Bank.
Leyretana said about P80.73 billion budget was set aside for Mindanao super region projects.
He said developing satellite airports is key to increasing production in Mindanao, which is basically an agri-business-based island.
The development of satellite airports and infrastructure projects should be pursued in light of the potential of Asian region including the Philippines as the region to watch in the wake of the meltdown besetting big scale economies, Leyretana said.
“The next region to watch is the Asian Region because we are rich in natural resources and raw materials,” Leyretana said.
He said economic analysts have forecast prices in Asian region to drop in the early part of next year as a boom in the construction industry is also seen in Asia next year. (PNA)

I hope the local authorities would have a clear attention to this matter. Let's get rid of those illegal structures and give the sidewalk back to the pedestrians. Wag na tayong masyadong mamolitika. Every time we travel we always see to it that we have a comfortable, clean and safe place to stay to the place where we are heading. For travelers who are on budget but still want to experience the amenities of your home, I would like to recommend the HOSTEL at the MSU-IIT campus in Tibanga. The place is clean. Its location being inside a school guarantees utmost security. The parking area is spacious. The hostel is surrounded by trees, so every time the wind blows, you experience a cool breeze.
The staff is friendly and always ready to serve you with a smile. The hostel manager Ate Chai sees to it that visitors are well taken care of. If you want to book yourself please call in advance to check if they have any vacancy. They don’t allow anyone just to come and check in. You have to be referred by someone they know. No need to worry about food, because a few steps away you can already see Jollibee, Chowking and lots of carenderias in the corner.
After a very busy day of sight seeing and experiencing what Iligan has to offer, the hostel is your home away from home. To all travelers, locals and foreigners, check the place out. It is worth your money.

I had a tour of this facility on my recent visit to Iligan and MSU-IIT. It has " all " the necessities And convieniences and appears to be First Class all the way ! some of the units even have outdoor balconies attached to the rooms. The room I saw includes private " CR " with hot and cold water bathing facility. The recent addition of Chow King in the Elena Tower hotel building, virtually next door is a big plus along with several internet cafes, Club 7 Restobar, Red Ribbon and Jollibee. There are No Smoking signs prominently posted within the Hostel ao I would assume that it is a smoke free facility as well.

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 11/15/2008 8:48 AM
First-time Square Off participants Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) advanced to the next round of ANC's "Frankahan: The Drilon Debates" after overcoming the University of Sto. Tomas (UST).
With the motion agreeing with the abolition of the country's multi-party system, UST laid emphasis on the argument that a two-party setup would extract the best possible candidates to run. UST prime minister Joan Zaldivar stressed that the bi-party system would prove to be more advantageous to the country, given the prevalence of personality politics, lack of party loyalty, and absence of clear and identifiable party ideologies.
Led by the judges' choice for best speaker Mara Nanaman, MSU-IIT aggressively clashed with UST, arguing that a multi-party system would be more feasible as it is more responsive to the country's diversity. The winning team pointed out that UST failed to explain how a two-party system would eliminate the current problems and complaints brought about by the status quo.
Although MSU-IIT didn't give more tangible examples as the judges would have liked, the Government side's lack of responsivess was more heavily penalized.
"We felt that government's responsibility was to prove that the multi-party system in and of itself currently doesn't address the problems properly," Chief Adjudicator Lex Ledesma explained.
"What we were looking for was something stronger from the government side to clarify what they were saying… So [the] winner by split decision is MSU," he added.

Anyone heard about this "Project Runway"?
Apparently an Iliganon won this contest.... Aries Lagat...
Go Iliganons!
http://projectrunwayphilippines.com/project-runway-philippines-winner/#more-38
The Project Runway Philippines Winner
The face of the future Philippine fashion!
kabantay man ko ani niya kay schoomate nako sa high school pero ahead lang nako 1 year. murag duol ra man cguro mi balay kay tga Sto. Rosario man siya gapuyo dati.
Congratulations Aries

grabe! With Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG), KALIMULAN CULTURAL ENSEMBLE, OCTAVA Choral Society, and MINDS VARSITY DEBATING TEAM showing their guts. Besides academic excellences, MSU-IIT indeed leads MINDANAO in the performing arts, and other extra-curricular endeavors. The university represented the colorful Mindanao with a message that we can also strut some stuff against the top universities in the country either through the performing arts or the academic endeavors. Truly, Mindanao's technological, artisctic, and academic center of excellences.

Alingatong November 17th, 2008, 03:38 AM 3 communities of learning get fund grants from Intel
November 16, 2008 3:45 pm by pna
MANILA, Nov. 16 — The Department of Education (DepEd), the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED), Intel Philippines and the University of the Philippines National Institute of Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP-NISMED) recently lauded selected local government units (LGUs), learning institutions and individual educators at the 3rd Intel Teach Awards for 21st Century Educators.
Surigao City, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT)–Iligan City Division, and the province of Laguna receive fund grants from Intel as they are cited as Intel Teach Community of Learning Champion Awardees.
Lauded for fostering an enabling environment for Information and Communication Technology (ICT) integration in education, MSU-IIT–Iligan City Division is set to receive a P120,000 fund grant; Surigao City, plus the province of Laguna will be getting P100,000 each.
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus said, “We laud Intel for its innovative ways of bringing the benefits of 21st century learning to our public school system.”
“Your continuing support will certainly encourage our teachers, learners and community stakeholders to seriously consider ICT as a powerful tool in education,” he added.
Plaques of appreciation are also presented to the municipalities of Marikina, Cavite, Naga, Camarines Norte, Mandaue, Makati, Calbayog and Muntinlupa for spearheading the Intel Teach Program as a model for ICT integration into their respective education systems.
Finally, 16 Mater Trainers (MTs) are also given Certificates of Appreciation for conducting trainings to volunteer units in 2008.
Intel Teach is Intel’s professional development program designed to help teachers effectively integrate technology with learning.
In the Philippines, Intel Teach has trained 91,616 teachers since the program was launched in 2001.
This year, Intel Teach branches out to private schools with the successful piloting of the program in Notre Dame of Greater Manila (NDGM)), a private, sectarian, Catholic school.
In January 2006, Intel Chairman Craig Barrett announced plans to expand Intel Teach to an additional 10 million teachers from all over the world by 2011.
Intel Teach in the Philippines is enhanced by the Community of Learning (CoL), a cluster of institutions and organizations in a geographic area all working together to harness technology in fostering quality education.
A COL’s a network includes teachers, trainers, support providers, students, education policymakers, planners, and administrators, technical support staff, education researchers, parents, local governments, and other education stakeholders that share information, expertise, and resources in support of technology integration in schools.
As in all communities, CoLs are defined by a shared purpose, that is, technology integration, and a sense of belonging – membership and accountability.
Since its pilot in 2005, nine active CoLs have been thriving in various parts of the country.
In these communities, program-based support and extensive interaction among stakeholders are fully utilized to achieve ICT integration goals.
These CoLs are in Agusan del Sur, Bulacan, Calbayog City, Iligan City, Laguna, Makati City, Muntinlupa City, Surigao City and Cavite Province.
Intel Teach is one of the cornerstones of Intel’s corporate responsibility programs. Intel’s commitment to education stems from its desire to fuel tomorrow’s innovation. (PNA)

TEAM ILIGAN PRIDE: 2008 Carrera Habagat's 3rd Placer
Thursday, 20 November 2008
http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/employee/Adisory/j1.jpg
Team Iligan Pride bagged the third prize in the recent 2008 Carrera Habagat in the quiet town of Sto. Dominggo, Albay. The Iligan contingents hurdled the gut-wrenching challenges, along with ten other contenders, in the 'multi-day, multi-discipline outdoor adventure race which combines discovery, adventure, sport, team spirit and environmental concerns' on November 12 that culminated with awarding ceremonies and dinner on the evening of November 15.
Not only the 11 participating teams from all over the country but the race marshals and outdoor enthusiasts as well were in for a real treat in this year's grueling four-day race.
After the lead changed multiple times, Team Iligan Pride, going strong with veteran adventure racers Leo Espinosa, James Dimco, Janjan Guanzon, Cecille Topia, Nappy Barbota and Neil Estillore, finished third with Davao's Team Mulatto finally overtaking Team Merrel of Manila (second place) to be declared as champion in this year's Carrera Habagat.
The winners finished the course which included discipline paddling, biking, running or trekking and swimming among other special skills in just three days with cash prizes of P100,000, P60,000 and P40,000 awaiting the top three teams.
The country's premier adventure race is a time-tested training ground for renowned climbers Leo Oracion, Pastor Ermata, Carina Dayondon and Jane Belarmin whose impressive exploits of Mt. Everest are rooted from years of pushing their limits in races such as Carrera Habagat.
The Iligan City government, thru the Iligan City Sports Commission, once again expresses its gratitude to Victor 'Bambi' Guevara for his unwavering support to Team Iligan Pride. (EAMayormita-ICTC)

for the so many past administrations, the area is still under contention, AFAIK. landowner says the sidewalk is still part of his property. wonder why the city gov can't buy that parcel and give the sidewalk back to the public.:ohno:

omg, that's the devastating flood of every 12 years that happened November of 2007.
Guys, according to old folks such flood is caused by an 'engkanto' named "Tambiyong" whose 'enchanted' boat traverses ILIGAN through this river every 12 years to deliver his 'cacao' products abroad. A similar story is also spread in MANDULOG RIVER as well as other parts of NORTHERN MINDANAO and CENTRAL VISAYAS although the name of the 'enchanted creature' is different.
