‘RANAW: ISANG ALAMAT’

Bringing a legend back to life

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines—From oral history to the stage, one of the lesser known heroes of Northern and Central Mindanao, Bato Lakungan, ancestor of present-day Iliganons claiming descent from the mama sa Wato (Royal House of Wato), takes his rightful place in the realm of legend.

Bato Lakungan is played by a Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) AB English freshman, Michael Lagura, in Steven Patrick C. Fernandez’s Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) prize-winning play, “Ranaw: Isang Alamat,” for 15 performances in a two-week run this month at the MSU-IIT mini-theater.

Fernandez’s three-act play had its first shows in 1985 and national tours in 1986-1989 under the CCP’s Outreach Program, with Tess Rances at its helm.

The new production had a cast composed of faculty and students from MSU-IIT’s College of Arts & Social Sciences, College of Science and Mathematics, School of Computer Studies, College of Education and College of Engineering.

The theater’s ceiling and stage areas were covered with black cloths with improvised wings blending with the stage walls for the actors’ exits, and quick costume changes for the play’s shifting scenes.

Complementing the spare setting were engineering students in black T-shirts looking frightfully serious playing Fernandez’s original pop musical compositions with the guitar, electric organ and native instruments like the kulintang, gongs, flutes and drums.

Colorful costumes

Rigid auditions had required actors to sing and dance as well, but, except for Integrated Performing Arts Guild veterans Melvin Pascubillo (in the roles of Maranao warlord, Datu Baringigan/Sultan sa Sulog/warrior), Amado Guinto (as warrior/chorus) and Gamallier Ricablanca (as Abdul and as narrator), the rest had to grow into their roles, especially 17-year-old Lagura, whose lack of character internalization showed through in the love scenes and during confrontations with Baringigan. His singing was hoarse and off-key at times.

The show dazzled the audience with its colorful native costumes, well-executed pangalay-based dances and contemporary choreography. The props, for example, for the voices Bato Lakungan hears under the torogan (Datu’s house)—after his arrest and after being falsely accused by his stepmother, Bai Kawasa (Leilani Monterola Fernandez) of seducing her—added to the mystery of his discovery of four magic weapons inside a baul.

These magic weapons are the baladao (three-bladed dagger); romeba (or kampilan); makagaray (sword); and the makakalmot (two-bladed dagger). It is said that the baladao is kept by one of Bato Lakungan’s descendants, the Ramiros, who, in turn are descendants of Iligan’s first barangay head, a Christianized Maranao from the mama sa Wato. The three other weapons are kept by Bato Lakungan’s and Kamayungan’s descendants who belong to the Maranao, Maguindanao, Higaunon and Iliganon groups.

When the play was written in 1983, Fernandez aimed to show the affinity of these various groups but further research is needed to separate fact from fiction. In the absence of written records, researchers are aware of persons who know the story of Bato Lakungan and salsilas (genealogies). The reality is that most families with salsilas refuse access to these given their maratabat (pride), their putting a premium on wealth and prestige and their unchanging attitudes toward the other groups mentioned.

Neatly choreographed

The 80-minute play, from the original’s 120-minute run, was a treat for first-timers, mostly students from different parts of Mindanao. Given the mini-theatre’s limited space, the actors mingled frequently with the audience throughout the play.

Its neatly-choreographed war scenes, the vigorous movements where warriors (Kenn Erwin Velasquez, Cyril Cabello and Gerard Ricablanca) engaged in slow-motion sword fights, were a joy to watch—a credit to the long hours of training the actors went through.

Among the new players, standouts were Ricablanca’s powerful singing voice as narrator, creating the balance between action and pure narrative; the natural singing, dancing and acting of Elaine Macamay (Bai sa Toros); Dianne Clemente (as Mahayag) and Juvy Pelos (alternate to Kamayungan); and Jexxon Canazares’ realistic portrayal as the Higaunon Datu Landa.

It is to Fernandez’s credit that he was able to recreate a hero’s exploits, otherwise forgotten or confined to some salsilas, and highlight the fact that a hero during pre-colonial times understood the meaning of unity in diversity.

When the walls of tribalism prevent groups from living in peace and harmony, the image of this Datu lasts longer in our minds.

Thousands Attend Serviamus Assembly In Mindanao; Army Brigadier Seeks Help For Refugees
Monday, December 01, 2008 09:10:59 PM

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / Dec. 1, 2008) – Some 3,000 people gathered in Iligan City in Lanao del Norte province in the southern Philippines for the 11th General Assembly of the Serviamus Foundation Inc.

The weekend assembly, held at the gymnasium of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, was successful with Serviamus vowing to continue its micro-financing programs to uplift and strengthen socio-economic condition of poor households in Mindanao through a quality innovative financial and other development services.

The foundation is headed by Bishop Elenito Galido of the Diocese of Iligan City and Norma Gejon, the President and Executive Director.

The assembly highlighted the various local products from the Small Enterprise Development Program Project. Government and military officials and leaders of the business and civil sectors were also invited in the assembly.

Col. Benito de Leon, commander of the Army’s 104th Infantry Brigade, asked the Serviamus Foundation Inc., to also help the internally displaced persons (IDPS), particularly the Muslims, as a result of the August 18 attacks by Moro rebels in Lanao del Norte province.

In his speech before the assembly, De Leon said his soldiers are now also much involved in the return, resettlement, and reintegration of the IDPs in the province consistent with the International Guiding Principles on Internal Displacement as well as the implementing instructions of government leaders.

He noted, however, that many of the IDPs have lost the drive and the capacity to recover economically. He suggested a similar Small Enterprise Development Program be made by Serviamus to also benefit the IDPs.

“In being able to also extend your service to the IDPs, especially to the Muslims, this Foundation would have demonstrated firmly its full transformation from being church-based into a true NGO,” he said. (With a report from Merlyn Manos)

According to press reports, this guy almost puffed under pressure when tested by the Serbian Coach hired as consultant and project director for SBP. Dangerous Drugs Prevention Month Ends
Tuesday, 02 December 2008

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/employee/Adisory/b.jpg

As Iligan City culminates the month-long celebration of Dangerous Drugs Prevention and Awareness month in November, Secretary Sotto and City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz led the ground breaking ceremony of a P15 million Drug Rehabilitation and Treatment Center Project at Barangay Abuno.

The proposed rehab center will cater not only Iligan City drug dependents but will also serve neighboring provinces. Mayor Cruz also called on the people of Iligan to support this endeavor particularly in making this project sustainable.

Congressman Vicente Belmonte Jr., for his part committed to counterpart from his Priority Development Assistance Funds for the completion of the said project.

During the press briefing, Secretary Sotto told the press Friday that some MILF members are behind the illegal marijuana plantations in the interior of Lanao and Bukidnon provinces. The marijuana plants Sotto said “are being grown and concealed within the cassava plantation.” Sotto added that while this is a fund source for the moro rebels, it is also a ‘narco-terrorism’ which posed danger to young generations.

The Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and other law enforcement agencies are now closely monitoring the two provinces.

Sotto encouraged the communities to organize a functional Barangay Anti Drugs Council to further strengthen the campaign against illegal drugs.

At Iligan City plaza, an estimated 2000 students witnessed the burning of shabu and marijuana confiscated in several raids conducted in Iligan and nearby areas.///(By : Richel V. Umel )

Iligan SK chair wins VoM’s Mindanao-wide writing tilt

ZAMBOANGA CITY--16-year old Iligan City Sangguniang Kabataan Federation Chair Erika Rae Cruz bagged the championship in the Mindanao-wide feature writing competition organized by the Voice of Mindanao.

"Mindanao can be likened to a caged bird. It cannot spread its wing and fly. It can't hover above the trees and sing. It can never be free, unless we do something about it. We Mindanaoans can set the bird free. We can make a change. It's not too late," Cruz said, when asked what her vision of peace in Mindanao is.

Cruz bested 14 other finalists in the competition, which kicked off in Zamboanga City with the holding of Concurso de Escritos in the first week of October. It ended after more hundred entries from all over Mindanao had been evaluated by different judges from the education and media sectors.

All winners received their awards from Mayor Celso Lobregat, City Councilors Rudy Lim and Nonong Guingona. The city officials were assisted by Carousel Concepcion of VoM.

Coming close to the youth leader from Central Mindanao are Leah Mariel Reyes of Dipolog City, at second place; and Saima Kabalo of Cotabato City.

Cruz is presently a fourth year high school student of Integrated Developmental School, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology. Reyes is also in her senior year at the Zamboanga del Norte National High School. Kabalo is likewise a candidate for graduation in March 2009 at the Kutawato Institute of Technology Foundation, Incorporated.

The SK Chair is the daughter of Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz and First Lady Gina Cruz.

Mindanao power plants up for auction
Philippine Daily Inquirer
12/06/2008

The government agency handling the privatization of electricity assets, Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM), has started the bidding process for 114-megawatt Iligan I and II diesel-fired power plant complex in Mindanao.

The deadline is Dec. 17 for submission of letters of interest to join in the auction, PSALM said in an invitation to bid.

Potential bidders will have to remit a nonrefundable participation fee of $2,000 and execute a confidentiality agreement and undertaking by Dec. 19.

The pre-bid conference has been scheduled for Jan. 9, 2009, and the submission of final bids for March 25.

The Iligan I and II plants were first auctioned on Oct. 15, but the bidding was declared a failure.

They were both commissioned in 1993.

The plants are in Dalipuga, Iligan City, around 74 kilometers southwest of Cagayan de Oro City.

Meanwhile, PSALM held a pre-bid conference for a decommissioned 225-megawatt plant in Limay town in Bataan province, northwest of Manila, last Dec. 3, with seven of the original eight interested bidders participating. Of the seven, six were local firms.

PSALM said that only the “structures, plant equipment, auxiliaries and accessories” of the Bataan plant would be sold.

The bidding, the third sale attempt by PSALM, has been scheduled for Feb. 11, 2009.

The plant, commissioned in 1993, has two 310-megawatt modules: one consisting of three 70-megawatt gas turbines, and another with a 120-megawatt steam turbine. Abigail L. Ho; edited by INQUIRER.net

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Dec. 7 — The biggest tourism exposition in Region 10, Pasundayag Northern Mindanao: Wellness and Tourism Expo, will be staged in Iligan City on December 11.

This was disclosed by Department of Tourism-10 regional director Catalino Chan III as the rest of the tourism stakeholders in the region are preparing for the annual tourism exposition.

Chan said such exposition was put on shelve after the recent fighting in neighboring Lanao del Norte but with the ongoing peace in the province, staging the exposition in Iligan would help boost the city's tourism industry and of Lanao del Norte, the province of Iligan and Northern Mindanao as a whole.

He added it is the best time for people to know that Mindanao has the best things to offer especially to the tourists.

Chan said no less than Tourism Secretary Ace Durano will grace the event together with the mayors and governors of the provinces and cities in Northern Mindanao.

Participating local government units are Oroquieta City, Tangub City, Ozamiz City, Misamis Occidental, Bukidnon, Malaybalay City, Valencia City, Lanao del Norte, Camiguin, Iligan City, Misamis Oriental, Cagayan de Oro City and Gingoog City.

The weeklong activity that will end on December 14 is an annual domestic tourism promotion exposition showcasing the wellness and adventure destinations in the Region, giving tourists a whole new experience in wellness tourism while enjoying the tourist destinations in the region.

Chan said the exposition aims to promote wellness destinations, services, wellness food suppliers, extreme sports/adventure trips, culture of the region; increase awareness of the new trend of tourism industry; allow tourist to enjoy physical, emotional, spiritual well-being while enjoying the usual destination in the region; generate livelihood opportunities to untapped/indigenous centers, services and wellness suppliers and serve as a one-stop-shop for wellness/adventure tourism in the region.

Apo Hiking Society in Iligan

http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_9QqU-kMkoxg/STtLFVZGojI/AAAAAAAABOo/Z7cwGwmWcX0/s400/DSC02392.JPG

The Apo Hiking Society group graced the town of Iligan last night with their music ( OPM songs). Am an Apo fun although i don’t own any one of their albums nor memorize some of their songs. But for sure — i love ALL their songs. Their theme was “sa ILIGAN nAPOd sila!” which means “They are in ILIGAN AGAIN!
The group sang in “real”. I mean, i mostly saw them in serious songs and formal ang dating on TV but in real — oh my…they can make the people roar with laughter with their simple jokes but dialogued in serious manner. Thier props and choreos were just simply entertaining. It can’t be denied that the years has grown with them but successfully i guess. They are now 39 years and still continue making History and obviously they are still young inside. Boboy still the cute, Danny oh i love his Bisaya dialogues, and Jim wowwww he made me me want to be serious in my exercise. After 39 in Apo - i think he still looks sexy and sway sexy, too. Am not musician in instruments but i am by heart. Their music and songs can really sweep me off my feet and sway my whole body and can also make a tear fall and make me also forever be young at heart.

The concert was a concert for a cause spearheaded by the Iligan Medical Society for their project - Bahay Kalusugan. I can say it was a very successful one. The IIT gym was fully packed with their fans and majority of the audience were first timers to an Apo concert. They said they were here in Iligan too ten years ago and in 1998 i was in Bacolod or in Manila that time.

They mentioned alot of their milestones in their 39 years but i didn’t memorize them all. How i wish i did video the whole concert because for sure i would love to watch it all over and over again. One thing i remember is that - of their 39 years, they have more than 2200 plus concerts, and 22 or more albums.

All in all i did enjoy the concert and so with everyone of them that made it there. The strong rain did not stop the people from coming. The tickets were sold at a price of 3000 the highest and 200 the cheapest. I picked the 200 (to be paid on the 15th) hehehe and mind you i thought it would be a rotten spot. No it was not. It’s a price that i will never ever regret inspite of the financial crisis. One thing i regret was not being able to bring Dimple along because i think her chickenpox is at a contagious stage.

The group sang for the whole hour or more with many songs. Their songs are just timeless. Can be love by our grandmas and grandpas and even our grandkids in the future. No intermission nor change of concert clothes. Except for the 2nd to the last song that they put on an additional clothing as part of their “global” opinion of music these days. It was a hilarious part. People did not want the concert to end. People did not stop clapping and shouted “encore encore” after they exited. So they came back on stage with the song “Batang Bata ka Pa“.

Oh i won’t forget to mention too the Apo Band. Wow the music director was very awesome in drums. I was not able to get his name but he performed great. Actually the band did great too but without a good musical director, that can have a difference.

Good day SSCers!

Please do put your name, how many t-shirts would you like to order and sizes (Philippine t-shirt size) and what city would it be delivered. This is just a pre-listing for those who are interested in having the SSC Philippines National T-shirt.

The design will be revealed by New Year's Eve (the majority of the votes). The price per t-shirt will be determined by January as it depends on the number of t-shirts that are to be printed and how many colours will be used in the silk-screen printing process.

It is also agreed upon that printing will be done here in Manila so that it will have the constant quality of the shirts that will be printed. Therefore, for the people outside of Greater Manila Area, you may PM me the details for those who will be the contact representative of your locality.

Exercise your right to vote!

Maraming salamat po at Mabuhay po tayong lahat!

Intel honors outstanding communities of learning

Pasig City (10 December) -- Three communities of learning (CoL) were cited recently by Intel for fostering an enabling environment for the integration of information and communication technology in education. The citation came with a monetary grant which can be used to further improve the adoption of ICT in education.

The awarding was held recently at the 3rd Intel Teach Awards for 21st Century Educators held at the EDSA Shangri-La Hotel.

CoL is a cluster of institutions and organizations in a geographic area all working together to harness technology to bring about quality education.

The awardees were the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology/Iligan City Division, which received a P120,000 fund grant while Surigao City and the province of Laguna took home P100,000 each.

This event was organized by Intel Philippines in partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd), the Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development (FIT-ED) and the University of the Philippines' National Institute of Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP-NISMED).

Education Secretary Jesli Lapus lauded Intel for "its innovative ways of bringing the benefits of 21st century learning to our public school system."

He added, "Your continuing support will certainly encourage our teachers, learners and community stakeholders to seriously consider ICT as a powerful tool in education," he added.

Intel Teach is Intel's professional development program is designed to help teachers effectively integrate technology with learning. In the Philippines, Intel Teach has trained 91,616 teachers since the program was launched in 2001.

Blog (http://sunshineforlife.wordpress.com/2008/12/07/apo-hiking-society-in-iligan/)

yah..i was at thier concert. I even took some pictures and videos of thier concert. Ever since i was in high school i was a great fun of the Apo Hiking society..I love thier songs and have a compilations of it. I even have a picture of danny Javier and me during the araw ng Iligan..lols...wala silang pakakupas-kupas.I did have a great time and enjoyed thier concert so much...

USEC. Alburo mipasalig nga tabangan ang industria sa Turismo sa Iligan
Friday, 12 December 2008

(mta)

CONGRATS Mayor Cruz. You deserve it.

I have to laugh abit when i read "WELLNESS TOURISIM and CULTURAL EXPO" if they are serious about tourism first thing they should do is make the air cleaner the jeepneys are pumping out so much polution that while driving my motorcycle for 15 minute on the tibanga highway my nose was totaly black inside it was like looking into the exhaust pipes of a jeepney the air polution is a big problem wich should be addressed first before attracting tourists.

ahahaha. Here in Al-Khobar, K.S.A. a Pinoy Engineer bet 500 saudi riyals for Dela Hoya. Ahahaha

he was probably watching those pre-fight videos showing dela Hoya training in solitary in the woods, and very seriously under the watchful eyes of "great" trainors. then, he compared them all with Roach, who could not even stay long on his exercise machine, and Pacman's ragtag crew. appearances can be misleading.
bigger and taller is good for basketball. in boxing, he who throws punches the fastest and the hardest wins the game. it was amazing that dela Hoya couldn't even see the straights coming right at his face. he couldn't duck, couldn't parry, couldn't weave. what punishment. Manny should be renamed "The Shredder".
Hatton is next on the menu. but it probably won't be as sensational as what we've seen - Pacman at his best.

KALIMULAN

http://www.msuiit.edu.ph/arts-culture/kalimulan/images/kalimulan.jpg

Mindanao Culture is both rich and varied – A true mirror of the people of which it is the expression.

Ethnic dances are a part of this culture. They show not only the Artistic Ingenuity of the natives, but also their beliefs, traditions and life are reflected in them. These ethnic dances have for long survived. But unfortunately, only few people had the chance to see and appreciate them.

Inspired by the thrusts and objectives of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP), Prof. Christian T.N. Aguado, a cultural anthropologist headed as founder and organizer of the MSU-IIT Kalimulan Cultural Dance Troupe. As resident cultural dance troupe of the Institute, it was formally launched by a group of young talented college students and faculty members from the College of Arts and Social Sciences on June 13, 1988.

Objectives

The objectives of the troupe are:
To help preserve and promote Filipino culture through ethnic dances;
To foster awareness of ethnic dances as an Authentic Cultural and Artistic Expression of the Filipinos;
To coordinate with interested agencies and other organizations towards this end;
To spearhead campaigns for more cultural development programs in educational institutions and the community as well, and
To provide an outlet and develop students personality through exposure to this aspect of the performing arts.

Why Kalimulan?

This word is taken from Kalilang and Kaamulan. Kalilang is a social gathering of the Mindanao Muslim and Kaamulan is a Bukidnon term for social gatherings among the Lumads of the Non-Muslim community groups in Mindanao, thus Kalimulan word was coined from these two famous social gatherings of Mindanao community groups. This is also the main reason why the troupe concentrates on promoting Mindanao Ethnic dances.

Maybe they put that pic on that magazine to emphasize how industrial the Philippines is during that time with the booming IISMI. But the caption put on this thread is indeed wrong coz that's not in Iligan.

Mindanao Railway System masterplan now taking shape
Sunday, December 14, 2008 06:42:38 PM

MANILA, Philippines - The masterplan for the Mindanao Railway System (MRS) is now taking shape as Speaker Prospero C. Nograles today revealed that the Department of Transportation and Communications is on its advance stage of completing the feasibility studies for the various levels of the project.

"We are not sleeping on our people's aspirations," said Nograles, who is in receipt of an updated report on the bidding process for the conduct of railway feasibility studies for the MRS made by DOTC Undersecretary for Railways Guiling Mamondiong.

On Day One as the first Speaker from Mindanao, Nograles vowed to pursue the MRS project as a vital part of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's long term development plan to realize development in Mindanao.

Nograles noted that apart from the President's support, the House of Representatives is working hard to realize this long-overdue program to provide Mindanao a "reliable, efficient and viable" transportation network.

He cited five separate but similar bills filed by Reps. Edgardo "Sonny" Angara of Aurora's lone district, Antonio Cerilles of Zamboanga del Sur, Raul Gonzalez, Jr. of Iloilo, Rufus Rodriguez of Cagayan de Oro, and Pedro Romualdo of Camiguin, all seeking to establish a Mindanao Railways Authority.

All these measures are under urgent consideration and are being consolidated by the House Committee on Transportation chaired by Rep. Monico Puentevella of Bacolod City in coordination with the Committee on Government Enterprises and Privatization headed by Rep. Felix Alfelor, Jr. of Camarines Sur and the Committee on Mindanao Affairs chaired by Rep. Datu Pax Mangudadatu of Sultan Kudarat.

Angara, the House Deputy Majority Leader, in his House Bill 158, proposed the creation of the Mindanao Railways Corporation (MRC) which will provide the railroad and the transportation system sorely needed by the island.

"Mindanao has long been a neglected area, and this had caused unrest, resentment, even rebellion from some native groups. We have to reverse this if we want to achieve peace and progress not only in Mindanao but in the entire country as well," Angara said.

He said the proposed railroad which will crisscross Mindanao, if passed into law, will benefit the whole island's populace.

"It will accelerate economic activity, immensely benefiting the traders and businessmen," Angara pointed out.

The railroad will hopefully connect the various urban centers and provincial capitals in Mindanao such as Davao City, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City, Marawi, Pagadian, Dipolog and other potential areas of development.

On the other hand, Iloilo City's Rep. Gonzalez even went further to propose a "super body" to exercise control and supervision over the Philippine National Railways (PNR), Light Railway Transit authority (LRTA), Panay Railways, North Luzon Railway Corporation (NLRC) and all other railway offices existing in the country today, including the proposed MRC.

In a November 5 report to the Speaker, Usec Mamondiong said that since August 2008, the bidding process for the conduct of the railway studies for the MRS had started for the following:

1. Revision of the feasibility study for the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor (CIC) segment;
2. Pre-feasibility study for the Cagayan de Oro-Davao-General Santos line;
3. technical assessment for the Iligan-Zamboanga section; and
4. strategic Railway Development Plan for Mindanao.

Mamondiong also told Nograles that the strategic Railway Development Plan for Mindanao (masterplan) including the pre-feasilibity study for the Cagayan de Oro-General Santos segment and the Technical Assessment for the Iligan-Zamboanga section will be completed by the 3rd quarter of 2009.(Gil Bugaoisan)

TransCo, NPC reforest watershed areas

by Beth A. Ladaga

Iligan City (15 December) -- As part of the national efforts to conserve, protect and rehabilitate the country's degraded environment, the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo) Mindanao O & M and National Power Corporation (NPC)-Mindanao Generation personnel planted trees at the watershed areas of Agus 5 Hydro Power Plant Complex in Ditucalan village, this City recenlty.

Two Thousand fast growing hard wood species such as Red & White Lawaan, Mayapis, and Almon were planted inside the one-hectare watershed area located along the Agus River of Lanao del Norte province.

The activity was in compliance with the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between NPC and TransCo to reforest selected NPC-managed watershed areas.

Former NPC President Cyril C. del Callar and TransCo President & CEO Arthur N. Aguilar, signed the MOA this year at the NPC Head Office in Quezon City to help save the watershed areas of the country.

The two government-owned and controlled corporations jointly undertook the reforestation of open areas in selected NPC-Managed watershed areas or SNMWA to strengthen the capacity of the watersheds in water production, soil erosion prevention & flood control, carbon dioxide sink, among others.

TranCo's participation in this program is in line with its Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Stewardship Program or CSRESP.

On the part of NPC, it was vested with complete jurisdiction, control and regulation of watershed supporting power plants by virtue of Executive Order 224 or and Executive Order 258, which establishes and delineates the responsibilities of the NPC and the Department of Environment, to undertake conservation, development and rehabilitation measures of the said watershed areas.

In Mindanao Region, the tree planting activity was spearheaded by Ms. Agnes Sato, the Regional Environmental Officer of Mindanao O & M and Mr. Kharis R. Maranda, Section Chief, Lake Lanao Agus River & Watershed Area Team (LLARWAT) of the Water Management Division of MinGen.

Personnel from Mindanao O & M, Mindanao System Operations (MSO), Mindanao Transmission Projects (MTP) and Mindanao Backbone Transmission Projects (MBTP) participated in this activity.

Mindanao O & M gave P 50,000.00 for the purchase of seedlings and the maintenance of the trees, as agreed in the MOA

(boy decena)

UP Diliman Leads ERDT Consortium

In April 2007, the Engineering Research and Development for Technology (ERDT) Program was approved by President Arroyo with a P3.5 billion funding for three years. The ERDT is a consortium of seven-member universities in the country that offer mature master's and doctoral degrees in various engineering fields. De La Salle University, Mapúa Institute of Technology, Ateneo de Manila University, Mindanao State University Iligan, University of San Carlos, Central Luzon State University, and the University of the Philippines-Diliman, constitute the Consortium.

Researchers, scientists, and engineers (RSEs) with advanced degrees are needed to make S&T work for Filipinos: from disaster mitigation to poverty alleviation, from agriculture to semiconductor industries; ensure a sustainable environment and affordable energy for the future; produce indigenous technologies to better the lives of Filipinos. RSEs are those who have the necessary academic training (as evidenced by graduate degrees) and experience for R&D work and who are in fact engaged in R&D work. RSEs are considered vital to national development because of their capability to translate R&D results into viable industries, undertake high-impact research, pass on knowledge and identify new S&T directions.

Shown in the graph is a comparison of RSEs 1 per 10,000 population. Most developing countries have 3.4, while the Philippines has 1.08. The trend presented in the figure reflects the fact that as a country develops, it must rely increasingly on R&D and RSEs. Conversely, the lack of R&D and RSEs can be one big reason for the slow growth of many developing countries.

The ERDT aims to fill this lack of R & D, and RSEs. To this end, the ERDT include the following components: MS and Ph.D. scholarships, faculty development, infrastructure development, and research and development (R&D) in four areas: ICT, Semiconductor and Electronics, Energy, Environment and Infrastructure. There are currently 154 ERDT scholars (33 Ph.D. and 121 M.S) in the ERDT Consortium Universities and 142 research project proposals submitted to DOST.

Last year, the ERDT started drawing its R&D roadmap through round table discussions with industry, government and other academic institutions. Through the ERDT R&D proposals submitted to DOST, the groundwork for the R&D tracks have been laid. On September 12, 2008, the first ERDT conference, "Setting the Backdrop for the ERDT R&D in the Next 10 Years- Challenges and Opportunities," was held. In this conference the major players in the various fields of technology were brought together to fine-tune the R&D roadmap of the ERDT and helped realign the research of the ERDT scholars with the needs of industry, government and the country.

I was strolling in the Gaisano Mall and got curious why so many people were lining up at the counter of SAVERS. I went inside to check the merchandise for sale. Everything was so cheap. They were selling most of the items for less than a hundred pesos. This is the perfect store to shop especially now, that it is the Christmas season. Time to shop till you drop.

There are so many assorted things to choose from. They have stuffed toys for kids, chocolates, cookies, beauty products, poker sets and so many more. I got confused with all the frenzy inside the store. Everyone was in a buying mood and I felt like a millionaire in SAVERS. Your money can go a long long way. So many shopping bags to bring home. I bought presents for all my "binata". What I like about the store is that, the stuff they sell looks expensive but are actually affordable.

That's very good value for money. Check SAVERS! I'm pretty sure you will find something that you will like.

Explosions rock 2 Iligan City malls

By Abigail Kwok, Richel Umel
INQUIRER.net, Mindanao Bureau
First Posted 14:16:00 12/18/2008

ILIGAN CITY – (UPDATE 2) An explosion rocked two shopping centers here Thursday afternoon, authorities said.

Initial police reports said the blasts occurred at the Unicity shopping center at 1:35 p.m. and at the nearby Jerry’s Shoppers Plaza 10 minutes after. The two stores are on Aguinaldo Street.

The bombs exploded at the baggage counters at the entrance of the establishments, police said.

An Associated Press report quoted Lieutenant Colonel Agane Adriatico, military spokesman, as saying that two workers were killed and a dozen others were wounded in the attacks which were blamed on Muslim rebels.

Superintendent Dimacuta Sanggacala, spokesman of Lanao del Norte police, told INQUIRER.net that six people were killed and six others were injured in the blasts, which he said were caused by an improvised explosive device.

He said scene of the crime operatives (SOCO) were searching the area for more victims.

Meanwhile, the Iligan City Police reported that only one person was killed and at least three others were wounded.

Sporadic clashes between government troops and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, an 11,000-strong rebel group fighting for self-rule in the predominantly Roman Catholic nation's south, erupted in August after the country's top court scrapped a preliminary peace deal.
