:ohno:

Iligan flashflood sends hundreds fleeing homes
01/03/2009 | 11:24 AM

ILIGAN, Philippines - Hundreds of poor families were forced to flee their homes after a flashflood swamped some low-lying barangays in the southern city of Iligan on Saturday.

Nova Chavez, a resident of sitio Ilang-iliang in Hinaplanon barangay told GMANews.TV that she managed to grab only a bag of personal belongings and her baby after her house was submerged as the Mandulog River overflowed amid heavy rains Friday.

Iligan Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz has directed the Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council, Philippine National Police and rescue teams to mobilize and respond in severely affected areas. The 104th and 403rd Brigades of the Philippine Army were also helping in relief operations.

The areas affected were barangays Mahayahay, Tambacan, and sitio Manuang, where four houses were reported washed away or damaged, while in Bayug island in Hinaplanon were reportedly trapped due to high waters while th sea waters are on high tide.

Evacuees were temporarily housed in nearby elementary schools and were being assisted by the City Social Welfare Office.

Officials said the disaster council was still assessing how many families were affected. No casualties were reported at posting time. - GMANews.TV

As what you've heard over the radio or in the TV, one of the most affected areas of the flash flood is the Barangay Upper Hinaplanon. Mga silingan nako to be specific. :ohno: HHHmmppp... Medyo malayo sila nang konti and their houses are actually beside the Mandulog river. Early this morning, we woke up early after hearing that naa kunoy dako nga baha dapit sa suba. So nagdali mi ug adto ug kani among naabtan.

Then ni adto mi sa tulay dira connecting Barina-ut og Hinaplanon crossing, mao ni among nakita.

http://i267.photobucket.com/albums/ii294/markanthonyermac/Iligan%20Pics/DSCF9100.jpg

Suppose to be, ang water diha is layo kaayo sa tulay pero tungod sa baha, hapit na mo lapas sa tulay. Taas ang tulay diha oi. I mean... habog.

Then kana naa sa taas is mga Military ug Youth Organizations na naghatod ug USED Clothes and Bugas.

About 14 families are now homeless and around 250 - 350 are affected. And oh... sad kaayo kay naay mga babies nga 5 and 4 days pa ang age.. tsk... tsk.... :ohno::ohno::ohno:

Around 9PM this evening, ni abot si maam Gina Cruz together with some men and they brought RICE and INON-UNAN! Ayha pa naka-kaon ang mga evacuees. Naa pa gani nangayo sa akong mama kay gutom najud daw... gi hatag nalang ni mama among sud-an... kami ang nagutman napod.. PERO okay lang. :)

Then karon gabie..mga 10PM, we facilitated the games para sa mga bata then tagaan namo coins aron dili nila ma think ilang situation. Sad kaayo tan-awon.

I hope you guys would help me pray para sa ilang tanan.

I will keep you updated about what's happening here in my place.
God bless.

President holds year’s first Cabinet meeting in Iligan

By GENALYN D. KABILING

ILIGAN CITY – How the government intends to shield the domestic economy and the people from the gloom of global recession, breathe life into the fragile peace process in Mindanao, and sustain the manhunt against rogue Muslim separatist rebels involved in the atrocities in the south would dominate today’s first meeting of President Arroyo and her Cabinet this year.

On the second day of her four-day journey to Mindanao, President Arroyo will convene at 11:30 a.m. today Cabinet members to tackle these three major concerns affecting the country.

The three-hour Cabinet meeting at the Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House in Timoga, Iligan City, will be held under tight security, according to Presidential Management Staff chief Cerge Remonde, noting that it will take place a few weeks after a series of bomb attacks rocked Iligan City and other parts of the restive south.

After a weeklong respite in Baguio City for the holidays, the President kicked off yesterday her visit to Mindanao, starting with Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental, to check road and bridge projects as well as irrigation systems.

Apart from the Cabinet meeting, she will also visit today the flood victims at a nearby evacuation center at the Tubod elementary school in Iligan City following the onslaught of heavy rains and flash floods in recent days.

Remonde said the Cabinet meeting will first tackle the R300-billion economic resiliency plan, a massive infrastructure spending spree proposed by the economic team, in the first six months of 2009 to buffer the nation from the world financial crisis.

Remonde said the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) would make a presentation on the infrastructure component of the economic resiliency plan with inputs from the Department of Public Works and Highways, Department of Transportation and Communication, Department of Agriculture, Department of Education, Department of Health, Department of Defense, and Armed Forces of the Philippines engineering brigade.

The National AntiPoverty Commission will also brief the President and the Cabinet on the comprehensive livelihood and emergency employment program as another measure to counter the adverse effects of the sluggish world economy.

Remonde said the government remains optimistic the economy will continue to overcome the global economic crisis and maintain economic growth.

Although a number of multinational financial institutions have predicted the domestic economy will not fall into recession, Remonde said the government will not be complacent and would rather continue pump-priming the economy through investing in infrastructure, supporting local industries and micro-, small-, and mediumenterprises, generating jobs, among others.

"During this troubled time, the role of government is to help insulate the Filipino people from the price shocks and economic pressures," he said.

On the peace process in Mindanao, Remonde said the President and the Cabinet would tackle the resumption of the peace talks between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), involvement of various sectors in the peace process, as well as acceleration of peace development efforts.

Newly appointed chief government negotiator Rafael Seguis will make a presentation on efforts to jumpstart the stalled negotiations. Presidential adviser on the peace process Hermogenes Esperon Jr. will give an update on the social integration program for rebel returnees.

Remonde said the government is determined to pursue peace talks in the context of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration, as earlier enunciated by the President in the fresh approach to peace efforts.

He added they will also implement peace agreements, which include an enhanced reintegration, rehabilitation and amnesty program for former rebels and development projects aimed at conflict-affected areas.

He noted that the government has provided emergency and livelihood assistance to 40,000 rebel returnees, who were awarded with immediate assistance of R20,000 each in cash and R50,000 capital assistance in goods.

"The government is optimistic that the paradigm shift to disarmament, demobilization and rehabilitation policy in dealing with armed groups will end the armed conflict and will lead to a just conclusion of the peace process that will focus on genuine dialogues with conflict-affected communities and stakeholders," Remonde said.

The third part of the Cabinet meeting would involve a command conference on government operations against rogue MILF commander Bravo, who led a recent series of attacks on civilian communities in Mindanao, according to Remonde.

Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Alexander Yano will make his report to the President and the Cabinet.

Despite the recent attacks in the south, Cabinet Secretary Silvestro Bello III said the safety of the President and her government team has been secured for their assembly in Iligan City.

The Cabinet meeting was originally scheduled in Molundo, Lanao del Sur, but was reset to Iligan City so the President could visit the flood victims in the area.

From Iligan City, the President will head to Cagayan de Oro City, Bukidnon, and Camiguin before she returns to Manila on Thursday.

Press Secretary Jesus Dureza earlier explained that the President opted to kick off her first working week in Mindanao to bring the government closer to the people.

DISNEYLAND OF MINDANAO

Aside from the enchanting Dakak Park and Beach Resort and the historic Rizal Shrine which are among country’s favorite tourist destinations, the city can now boast of a world class commercial center.

Commercial era

Gloria de Dapitan, which is situated at Sunset Boulevard, is a one-of-its kind three hectare commercial complex. It is just 12 kilometers from the Dipolog city airport, six kilometers from the seaport, and 14 kilometers from the urban center of the Dipolog city. It is just 20 minutes from the Dakak Beach Resort, 10 minutes from Rizal Shrine and eight hours of bus ride from Cagayan de Oro City.

“According to the Philippine Chamber of Commerce, they visualize our city as the next Bohol. In other words, it will now be the one of the premier tourist destinations in the country,” Gloria de Dapitan vice president Dindo Ilagan told the Inquirer.

“By March this year, we will open the first and only amusement park outside Metro Manila—the Gloria’s Fantazy Land. We will have 18 major rides. Most of these are imported. One of the major rides we have is the roller coaster which we bought from California, USA,” he added.
Amusement park

Miguel Cintora, an American consultant who is in charge of issuing certificates for all major rides in Califonia, went over here to assemble and to train the people regarding ride safety of Dapitan’s P200-million worth amusement park.

wow! i love koreans! (may openings pa bah for tutoring?) this is good news for iligan, since this will soon open doors to the foreign community haven't seen koreans reach iligan, hanggang CDO ko lang sila nakikita. and most of all, its good news for me!

how long will they be staying?

RML
January 6th, 2009, 07:57 AM
Hi Rakue. Please don't quote all pictures to save us time from downloading. Thank you. :)

The Koreans are going to stay here for 3-4 months. That's what the length of the program is. You can submit your application to the person-in-charge who's also staying at the hostel.

From my informant, this is the fist batch of students in Iligan and many more will follow soon, depending on the security issue of the city. Unlike those Koreans in other Philippine cities like in Cagayan de Oro, for instance, the Koreans that participate in Iligan's program are college students of some of Korea's elite universities. These are highly educated Koreans, so to speak, so let's be careful with treating them. Another batch will arrive on March. Make yourself ready for them. :D

Iligan, through MSU-IIT, is hosting foreign students who are studying English as a second language. The first batch has just arrived and they're from South Korea. Got the chance to talk to the students and they said they're loving it here.

This explains much, why I saw some Koreans at Gmall dining at Jollibee last Jan. 2.
As I saw them, I thought "no way are these Koreans here for a vacation".
It turns out I was right.

There are actually 11 of them here -- 10 students and 1 professor. Of the 10 students, only 4 are females, all the rest are males, including the professor. They are students of Inje University in South Korea. http://www.inje.ac.kr/english/

I had the chance to talk to some of them and I was delighted to know that they're loving it here and wanted to stay a little longer despite that they've missed their families back home and the present terrible security problem of the city is still haunting the local people.

If this first batch becomes a success, another group of students will arrive on March. And, hopefully, there will be more of them as the 25 students who have originally signed up have backed out when the bombings occurred.

Let's all hope and pray for a success of this program as this success will put Iligan on Koreans' map. I will post pics of them here when I get their permission to do so.

You should be very proud of IIT and be very, very proud of its Chancellor as he made a tremendous amount of effort to win the Koreans whose original plan is to hold the exchange student program at either of these universities: Xavier University, University of Mindanao, Silliman, San Carlos and Ateneo de Davao. The Chancellor argued that Iligan is safe for these students and fought "tooth and nail" to win them. He succeeded and he's hoping that this would be a good start for Iligan and the university. MSU-IIT hopes to establish linkages with several universities in Malaysia, Africa, Middle East, Brunei and the US. I hope he pushes this plan so that Iligan will become a city of students and highly educated people. Progress will follow when you have a population full of ideas, vigor and positive attitude.

As I recall, the bridge was repaired some time ago. I'm not so sure about the date but I think it was around 2002.
Anyway, I've been to Linamon recently and the road deck of the bridge had already been asphalted
so its no longer "lubak2", as you still think it is. :)

It's nice to know that people nowadays are being very vigilant when it comes to looking out for bombs, grenades, dangerous firearms, and the like.

I applaud the authorities even for the not-so-quick response. What's important is that nobody got hurt.

I was just in CdO a few days ago and I was surprised security wasn't tightened in Kit Kai and SM. They shouldn't be too complacent over there as this security problem is nationwide, and as the Israeli troops are continually bombarding Gaza Strip, the retaliation would surely extend to some countries where Muslim is present as minorities, including this God forsaken country of ours.

Let's just pray for a better 2009 and beyond.

BOSS Program ning tuiga, nagsugod kagahapong adlawa

Tuesday, 06 January 2009

(boy decena/mta)

Mindanao Film Festival

Kiss the Rain, a short film made by IV-Quasar students, originally for their IT class, was chosen as an official entry to the Fourth Mindanao Film Festival (MFF), held in Davao City this December. The MFF started with the theatrical screening of the twenty-two films in Gaisano Cinema on December 14, where all the films were shown on the big screen for one week. The Film Festival culminated with the awards night on December 21, 2008. With the aim of developing a truly Mindanao cinema, the MFF is recognized as one of the legitimate award-giving bodies in the country that recognize artistry in film-making.

This year’s film festival is the most prestigious yet that the MFF has had, what with twenty-two entries from both the professional (Guerilla) and the student categories. Kiss the Rain holds the proud seat of being the only entry made by high school students. Not in spite of this fact, Kiss the Rain contended for Best Student Film, an award won by Eklipse, a short film on love and witchcraft made by MassCom students from the University of Mindanao.

There was only a single set of awards for both professional and student film categories. Among the major awards given were Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, Best Screenplay and Best Picture. Kiss the Rain championed above all the other entries, professional and student alike, in the Best Poster category. Previously, this same award was won by the same poster in the IDS Digital Film Festival, DiscArte, which was organized by Mr. Ronald Jay P. Hupa, as an avenue for the showcasing of the fourth year students’ projects in his IT classes.

In its use of dichromatic black and white, and one contrasting image in red (the umbrella), Kiss the Rain’s poster captured the synthesis of the film. It elicited curiosity and appealed to both the creative and the critical eyes, rather than to the literal level alone.

Under the direction of Tsaddi Esguerra, Kiss the Rain stars Alyson Ting as an independent girl who, as a child (played by Janna Kirsten Macaosip), lost her parents in a car accident during a rainy night. She has grown up reliving this horrible memory every time it rains. As a long-term result, perhaps, she has unconsciously shunned her chances of being happy by allowing the rain to steal her happiness in otherwise cheerful moments. This changes when she meets a mysterious earth-bound spirit, who creates a difference in her life. Played by Jezreel Orbe, this spirit makes her realize that life, although fragile and fleeting, is still beautiful. Ultimately, he helps her discover that, rain or no rain, there exists a chance for her to live and to love.

This story of loss and redemption is given a fresh voice by the story writers, Muhammad Murshid Marsangca and Razaleigh Kate Jumawan. Translated to film, the main characters are brought to life by appropriate costumes as required by the story. This job is overseen by Hanaeza Boransing. The tedious job of post-production was done by a team of three: Marc Jezreel Orbe for video editing, Marc Orlando Redoble for sound editing and Tsaddai Esguerra for cinematography.

Highlighted in the film convention the group attended in the Ateneo de Davao University is the relief of seeing young film-makers so knowledgeable in the technical areas of filming. The participants of the convention were pleased to see the Kiss the Rain group in person, as they thought they have shown so much promise in their film, both in artistic and technical areas. They had indeed an amusing time reconciling the film and the sixteen-year old film-makers. Kudos, Kiss the Rain-ers!

http://i486.photobucket.com/albums/rr230/geforcemmmx2000/kiss-the-rain-film-ids.jpg

What they did not know, was that back in IDS, we have more than a hundred and twenty sixteen-year old film-makers worthy of the same tip of the hat. Congratulations, everybody.

Here are some lousy shots taken this afternoon on my Nokia 6120. Unless the faces are seen blurry, everyone captured on photos is a friend of mine. So, I guess there's no violation of privacy for posting these photos here. :D

Here's a churchmate of mine who's checking out some imported stuffs at this store that sells items from the US, who also bumped into some friends who're into bands or something.

Here's the store that sells imported items mostly from the States.

The newly opened stall, Leaveland which sells quality shoes at a very reasonable price. Their products are sold slightly cheaper than the other store located on the same level (forgot the store's name) anyone pl help here. :D

Business Forum kalabot sa posibleng epekto sa Global Crisis dinhi sa Iligan, ipahigayon
Friday, 09 January 2009

Langkuban kini nga ahensiya sa Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) ug DTI.
