Hi tonight. What's up?

No; I'm not from MSU Medical School. My brother went there, but I don't think he knows when the building was constructed. I went to a university in Manila whose reputation far exceeds that of MSU's. ( Yabang ko naman. hehe. :) ) But, honestly, I don't think I have what it takes to become a doctor. I've always wanted to become an architect but I ended up working in a bank. LoL...

My uncle used to be one of the teaching staff of the college. If memory serves me right, he held that position in 1994 and ended his term in 2000, but the classes at that time were held at MSU IIT in Tibanga. The college is waiting for the release of funds for the building construction. They were promised a budget of 50 million. But since the college of medicine is under MSU main (Marawi), we wouldn't know if that whole amount would be allocated (spent) on the building construction and the improvements of the facilities. Alam nyo naman what will happen kung ang pera ang dadaan pa sa Marawi.

Edit: Sorry I had to correct myself. My uncle has never become a dean of the college based on the article posted by Alingatong. But I'm not sure of the accuracy of the facts presented in the article. For example, Dr. Lourdes Manalo is no longer the dean of the college. From what I have gathered, she was petitioned to be removed by other faculty members.

The History of the Mindanao State University - College of Medicine

BEFORE...

The MSU-College of Medicine opened its doors to its first batch of students in school year 1984-1985 at Marawi City. Manned by the first dean, Dr. Omra A. Tamano and faculty members recruited from Marawi City, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro City and Iligan City, the first classes were held at the Omairah Hospital in Marawi City. It was acquired in August, 1983 to serve multifaceted purpose, as classrooms, laboratories, library and dormitory for the students.

Aside from the free tuition fees and a round trip transportation allowance, the students who were scholars were given a stipend of P500.00 and P300.00 depending on their academic status. In return, they were to serve in Mindanao for 2 years for every year of scholarship.

In 1985, the 2nd batch of students was admitted. It was also in that same year, August 31, wherein a memorandum of agreement, represented by Pres. Mohamad Ali Dimaporo with the Ministry of Health represented by the Region XII Director Serapio B. Montañer Jr., was signed, allowing the medical students to utilize the available facilities in the hospitals and health center for the purpose of training.

In June 1986, the 3rd year first batch for clinical training was about to start. During that time, facilities and faculty were so inadequate so they turned their eyes to nearby Iligan City. They decided to set up training there after having sought the help of two prominent physicians – Dr. Angelo H. Manalo, an expert surgeon and his wife, Dr. Lourdes Mangoña-Manalo, a renowned anesthesiologist.

On that same year, Dr. Angelo H. Manalo was appointed as the clinical training director and set up the clinical training program of the 3rd and 4th year medicine students in Iligan City. Prominent practitioners in Iligan were recruited as additional faculty members. As arranged, they held their classes at the MSU-IIT. Rotations were done in Iligan City District Hospital, Mindanao Sanitarium and Hospital, Mercy Community Hospital and Dr. Uy Hospital. However, still in 1986, a report from the Commission on Medical Education authorized by the Board of Medical Education showed that the college was substandard in terms of facilities, faculty, curriculum and financial support. Thus, it was recommended that the college be phased out, so that no admission of first year applicants was allowed for the next academic year.

Efforts were made to correct the deficiencies so as to reopen the college. Meanwhile, the MSU-IIT College of Science and Mathematics could no longer accommodate the students for AY 1987-1988 because of an increase in the number of their constituents and no room was available for the College of Medicine. Despite the odds, classes were held in the house of Dr. Manalo during the first semester. On the second semester, the College utilized the Primero building because the second year class was moved from Marawi City to Iligan City to join the 3rd and 4th year that were already there.

On March 1988, an inspection team handed by the Association of Philippine Medical College (APMC) Executive Director Dr. Elena Ines-Cuyengkeng recommended the following: (1) transfer of the college to Iligan City (2) the transfer of the college from Primero building back to College of Science and Mathematics of MSU-IIT whose rooftop would serve as a laboratory especially for anatomy and (3) the revision of medical curriculum from a tradition to one that is community-based.

The failure of the Board of Medical Education team to come on June 6, 1988, which was the scheduled re-inspection date and the fact that the first year applicants were already there, made the university administration to allow the college to hold classes for the students pending the decision of the inspecting team.

On August 28, 1989, a Memorandum of Agreement was passed allowing the MSU-College of Medicine to utilize the Iligan City District Hospital as its base teaching hospital.

On March 1988, the MSU-COM graduated its first batch of physicians who garnered an 80% passing average during the 1989 August board. And on February 1990, everyone passed except for one who never took the board at all. The batch of 1989 got the 100% passing average during the 1990 board exam. Since then, all classes have done well in the boards so that by 1999, 136 of the 137 who took the board were duly licensed as physicians in the Philippines.

In 1981, Dr. Angelo H. Manalo was installed as the 2nd dean of the college. He was mainly responsible for the development of the community-based curriculum. He was a recipient of the ECFMG grant in 1993 through which he spent 3 months in the Bowman Gray School of Medicine of Wake Forest University at Winston-Salem North Carolina to learn about problem-based learning methodology.

Upon his return, he immediately set out to change the medical curriculum from its more traditional approach of teacher-centered lectures to that of problem-based student-centered small group learning sessions. By June 1994, the PBL approach was fully integrated to the first year class. The upper year levels continued with the traditional curriculum until it was phased out in SY 1997-1998 when the curriculum totally became problem-based.

In late 1996, Senate President Edgardo Angara provided initial funding of of 5 million pesos for the construction of a three-story building behind behind the Iligan City Hospital. The money was supposedly enough for the laying of the foundations and half of the first floor of the building. Short of funding, no construction took place for the years 2000-2001. Half of the 1st floor of the 3-story building that has been constructed is not enough to provide for the transfer of the college from the MSU-IIT campus. Nevertheless, during that time a number of improvements have been made, such as, the effective procedures and salary disbursement of the faculty and the addition of new physicians to the roster of the faculty. The Office of Medical Education was then established and Dr. Angelo H. Manalo, the former dean, was appointed as the director.

(mta)

Very accurate answer gors.

I just had a little chat with Jollibee Iligan owners yesterday. The plan for Iligan is to add more outlets. But after the bombing incidents (leche gud ning mga muklo!), the store sales have really been affected. But they're forced to add more outlets or Jollibee main will be the one to expand and open Iligan market to other interested franchisers.

The layout plan includes the ff:
1. downsize Jollibee general aguinaldo.
2. transfer greenwich to gaisano mall
3. open red ribbon in gaisano mall
4. close red ribbon tibanga
5. open the 4rth jollibee outlet in the city center. the target location in within 100 meters from the old gaisano.

Hi RML, how are you? You have quite a number of photos and I see you have taken time and effort to take photos of Iligan, upload them, and have them posted here. Thanks for sharing those images.

I've read with interest your recent posts to this thread, and I have a few questions for you which I believe you have to answer, so as to, at the very least, provide clarity to your posted statements---not only for me, but also for those who might have been wanting to seek clarification.

No, that isn't me. I guarantee you I look way better than that guy smiling in front of the camera. j/k  He's actually a friend of mine, Japeth, and he's from Davao City. He's a nursing board top-notcher (among the top 20 or something) and was inquiring at MSU Med at that time. I was amazed he actually liked MSU Med when there are several top-notched medical schools in Davao.

Why did he choose MSU Med over those medical schools in Davao? Can you please enlighten us?

What medical schools are in Davao that are top-notch? When you say top-notch, what is your basis of measurement?

The college extension building, which obviously isn't finished yet. Makes me sick thinking billions of pesos was plundered under this administration and seeing our state universities in a despicable mode.
http://i710.photobucket.com/albums/ww105/RMLayug/HPIM2282.jpg

Exactly how many pesos were "plundered"? Was it proven by a Court of Law that what you mentioned in your post as plunder did happen? And by whose "administration"? Can you show us your basis?

What other state universities are in "despicable" mode?

I hope you can enlighten all of us. Have a nice weekend. :-)

US donates school to Lanao del Norte town
Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews
Saturday, 24 January 2009 08:59

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews / January 23)—- A three-room school building worth P4.5 million was turned over to the central elementary school of Kauswagan town of Lanao del Norte by American soldiers to local officials and teachers.
US Army Captain Cristian Knutzen of the Joint Special Operations Task Force-Philippines, who turned over the building, said the US-funded project was built in collaboration with the Philippine government “to help bring stability in the region."

The municipality of Kauswagan was the jump-off point of the government’s all-out military offensive against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front in 2000. The town was attacked by MILF fighters in 2003 and on August 18 last year that led to the killing of civilians, damaged properties and soured relations.

“This is a town whose schools were burned during the attack,” said Col. Benito de Leon, commanding officer of the Army’s 104th Infantry Brigade.

De Leon said the local military and the local executives helped identify the projects for US funding.

The turnover of the keys to the classrooms was witnessed by representatives of the Department of Education, local government leaders and school children.

Gov. Khalid Mohammad Dimaporo, who attended the turnover, asked residents to “join hands for peace,” as he also thanked the soldiers “for their continued support to the province”. (Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews)

Intel donates ICT facility for Tubod
by Raul D. Dinapo

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte (19 September) -- Intel Philippines has donated a facility that would boost the Information and Communication system in the province.

Costing P1 million, the Wy-Max Facility is a pilot project initiated by Intel and is aimed to upgrade government system on transactions especially in offices with heavy traffic of clients.

According to Mr. Carlo Subido of Intel, his group has already set up the equipment to take off soon in other areas using the latest cable-less technology and has a reach capability of 50 kilometers.

Currently, the system has been servicing offices like the Provincial Planning Office and Administrators Office. He also mentioned that they choose Tubod town as pilot municipality in congruence with the eagerness of Congressman Abdullah Dimaporo and Governor Khalid Dimaporo to uplift services to their constituents. All departments of the Provincial Government and the Municipal Government would maximize the Wy-Max system and soon would connect its facility to the province's 22 municipalities.

Officials here lauded Intel for propelling services instrumental for country side development. The initiative of Intel would be a big leap for various LGU's here to also propagate services that is not only feasible but requires timeliness, especially on daily transactions. It was noted also that the National Computer Center has been undertaking proactive measures to encourage municipal government on establishing portals over the internet. (Lanao del Norte LGU)

I just heard the news na nag-sara daw ang Intel sa Manila? maraming nawalan ng trabaho.....totoo?

Iligan City Water Supply Development and Expansion Project

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/jeannette/old_mayors/new.jpg

Objective: This development and expansion project aims to provide adequate potable water supply to 38 mainly coastal barangays (86%) of Iligan City. The other six (6) barangays (14%) are in hinterland and/or mountainous areas which are not covered for the meantime by the water expansion project. The water demand projections were evaluated based on the water demand projections for the next 15 years (2008 up to 2022) with coverage areas divided into System 1 (10 barangays), System 2 (6 barangays) and System 3 (22 barangays).

The coverage includes residential, institutional, commercial and industrial connections based on the population projections from the National Statistics Office, and standard per capita water consumption in the Philippines.

Scope of Work and Timetable: The project component includes the construction of an Intake Dam similar to the existing intake structure at Ditucalan water source. The water sources from Spring No. 3 and 4 at Abaga area, Barangay Upper Tominobo will pass through this intake and deliver the water supply via the main transmission 24-inch to 16-inch pipeline along the national highway up to Barangay Dalipuga.

The project is expected to be completed on January 30, 2010 due to some delays brought about by the negotiations of the Road Right-of-Way (RROW) and the on-going competitive bidding process which is greatly affected by the soaring global price escalation of fuel and construction materials.

Updates:

a.Civil Works - The project was bidded June 13,2008. BAC declared failure of bidding due to lack of qualification and price quoted was too high. Rebidding to be conducted Jan. 15 to March 26, 2009.

b.Pipes- Bidded out on June 27, 2008. Awaiting BAC decision, pending reply of LBP/World Bank to letter-query sent.

c.Lot acquisition 100% completed; Environmental Compliance Certificate already approved by DENR.

d. Barring unforseen delays, sufficient water supply should be provided by December,2009

Hi RML, how are you? You have quite a number of photos and I see you have taken time and effort to take photos of Iligan, upload them, and have them posted here. Thanks for sharing those images.

Hi there too, Octavarium. I'm fine; thank you. How about you?

Doing like what I have done in this thread is a pleasure. It's actually just the least that I can express my pride as an Iliganon.

I've read with interest your recent posts to this thread, and I have a few questions for you which I believe you have to answer, so as to, at the very least, provide clarity to your posted statements---not only for me, but also for those who might have been wanting to seek clarification.

Why did he choose MSU Med over those medical schools in Davao? Can you please enlighten us?

Before I'll answer your question, let me clear it first that my friend who's from Davao, has not been accepted at MSU Med School yet, though he's definitely applying for a slot. He just took the NMAT and is waiting for the results. (I have 4 more friends who are applying, actually. The first one is from Butuan City. The second is from Gen San. And the other two are from Cebu.)

My friend Japh was attracted to MSU Med School because of its impressive performance in national license examinations. That's first and foremost. Last year, for example, only 4 MSU Med examinees have failed in the board exams out of the more than 40/50 examinees. And even looking at the school's performances in the past few years, it always has been quite impressive. Though it has not produced a top 1 or top 2 graduate yet, its passing rate has always been higher than the national passing rate or higher than most medical schools in the country, however.

His second reason is that, the medical school's tuition is affordable. It only charges 12,000 per semester. In contrast, most, if not all, medical schools in Davao charge three times as much as MSU Med School does and the quality may be sub par.

What medical schools are in Davao that are top-notch? When you say top-notch, what is your basis of measurement?

I'm sorry, but I have to ask him this when I see him as I am not quite familiar with the medical schools in Davao, except for Davao Doctors, which for me is a very good medical school with very good prestige.

My bases for assessing med schools may be different from his. I've noticed from him that he relies too much on board exams performance and tuition cost, not so much on prestige, facilities, curriculum, student quality and faculty caliber, which are mine.

Exactly how many pesos were "plundered"? Was it proven by a Court of Law that what you mentioned in your post as plunder did happen? And by whose "administration"? Can you show us your basis?

The "plundered" money that I've mentioned was meant to have done by the national government. It has actually nothing to do with MSU Med School administrators. Sorry; but I do have very little trust and confidence on the present administration. Again, the national administration. There are just too many issues and charges posed on them than there were in the previous administrations, which is quite alarming and frustrating. The ZTE deal, the North Rail project, the Joc-Joc Bolante-Fertilizer funds scum, the Hello Garci! tape are just some of the many corrupt practices this administration is guilty of. And whether this administration has been proven to have done those things or not does not change my view on this current administration.

What other state universities are in "despicable" mode?

I think a lot.

MSU-IIT is in the edge on being despicable mode despite its excellent placement in the PRC ranking. Look at MSU-IIT's facilities. Though they're relatively better than most state universities in the country, there's obviously more that needs to be desired, obviously. MSU-IIT needs more funding than it currently receives. It needs to modernize its facilities. Let's even forget modernizing first and concentrate on finishing the building construction. Some buildings look pretty run down. A few buildings are not even painted yet. Some programs don't even have their own academic facilities yet. Some students complain of the pungent odor that emits from the comfort rooms because there's no water to flush the toilets. Most chairs are old and rusty. The faculty members are good but underpaid. And there's very little funds for researches, which is ironic because IIT is a research-based university, unlike those elite private schools that are undergrad focused. Now, if MSU-IIT, already one of the best state universities in the Philippines, is suffering from lack of funding, how much more those state universities that aren't as prestigious as MSU-IIT, say Bulacan State University or Bataan State College? I would imagine they're more in despicable mode than is MSU-IIT.

Pardon me for being opinionated on this matter. Like I said above, this administration is corrupt and that has severely caused a downward trend of negativity in our country. But this isn't the right forum about their crookedness and whatnot. So, I would rather that we refrain from discussing such issues on this thread. Thank you too for your post. And I hope I have answered your questions.

Have a good day! :)

I hope Iligan government will give this as priority kse delikado ung area....

EEDMO, mopanday sa ilang ‘Plan of Action’ alang sa tuig 2009
Monday, 26 January 2009

(mta)

Thirteen information, communication and technology (ICT) councils from across the country, including those based in the Mindanao cities of Iligan, General Santos, Cagayan de Oro and Davao, gathered in the “City of Majestic Falls” for the First National Summit of ICT Councils. Such groups are public-private initiatives involving business support organizations (mostly chambers of commerce), local governments and line agencies, and are aimed at improving the competitiveness of local ICT resources and attracting business process outsourcing (BPO) investors. The event was organized by the Iligan ICT Council (Iligan eCouncil), the Commission on Information and Communications Technology, and the Iligan City chamber of commerce, with support from USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program. IIT overpass was constructed way back in 1998..may railings na ang kalsada pero mangita jud ug kaagian ang mga tawo nga arun dili lang jud makasaka sa overpass:nuts::ohno::ohno:.. kung dugay naka wala kabalik sa iligan, matingala pod ka kay 6-lane na ang highway from post office to Barinaut..:cheers:
