our traffic enforcement in Iligan is in an alarming state. Our enforcers are not followed by many drivers. In the presence of traffic officers, drivers still load and unload in the middle of the street! Everybody notices how this thing is going on up to this very moment!

I hope they can fully deputize our CSUs to apprehend those unruly drivers! Mga daghang wala'y seminar ning atong mga driver sa Iligan. Wala gyud nakapansin bisan pa ang committee nga nag under sa traffic rules and means.

Tana, butangan na lang nila ug railings ang kanang ginaagian sa mga estudyante diha sa ubos para mapugos mogamit ug overpass. pagdiha man gud sa ubos molatas sa dalan, hasol sa trapik.

Working 44th Birthday for Mayor Cruz
Friday, 30 January 2009

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/employee/Adisory/Mb.jpg

City Hall celebrates the 44th birthday of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz today (Jan.30). With people donning red shirts (the favorite color of Mayor Cruz), the mayor was showered with good wishes from various supporters. Mayor Cruz said it will be a “working birthday” for him.

Mayor Cruz was born in Iligan (in 1965) to Francisco A. Cruz and Almita Lluch Cruz. He took his elementary and high school in John Bosco School (Surigao del Sur), and took up Bachelor of Arts in UST, and finally Bachelor of Laws in Xavier and MSU-IIT. He is married to Gina Sue Hilda Macapayag Cruz with three children: Erika Rae (incumbent city councilor), Lawrence Angelo, and Almita Renee.

Mayor Cruz started his political career in the Kabataang Baranggay, and worked his way up as a city councilor, a vice-mayor, and currently the Local Chief Executive of the City.

MSU-Iligan pulls upset in 'Frankahan' (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/anc/01/30/09/msu-iligan-pulls-upset-frankahan)

:applause::applause::applause::applause:

In a stunning upset, Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology, neophyte Square Off participants, knocked out University of the Philippines - Diliman in this week's Square Off: Frankahan - The Drilon Debates. Arguing against the motion that government agencies should be mandated to employ displaced OFW's, the all-girl team of Iligan was unanimously voted to make it into the quarterfinals.

UP framed their argument by defining displaced OFWs as those pulled out of dangerous areas like Iraq and Gaza. They argued it is government's responsibility to give compensation and assistance to these workers.

The Iskolars ng Bayan asserted that as remittances from overseas workers keep the economy afloat, it's just right that the government give back by extending help to them through referrals in local and international employment market.

But MSU-Iligan pointed out that UP did not properly engage the motion and that what UP proposed was no different from what exists in the status quo. It was Best Speaker Mara Nanaman, Deputy Leader of the Opposition, who identified the main issue as one of Government prioritizing displaced OFWs.

Taking off from that point, MSU-Iligan built the case that laid-off workers who chose to stay in the Philippines did not deserve any less assistance from the state. And for that matter, those who lost their jobs because of conflict in Mindanao were no different from the OFWs pulled out of war-torn foreign countries. MSU asserted that nation-building isn't gauged by monetary contributions, therefore all should be treated equally. "Let them all fall in line!" called Nanaman.

Government Whip Claire Jiao tried to salvage UP's case by arguing that the local workers the opposition was seeking to protect were the very beneficiaries of OFW money. Thus, OFWs did deserve special treatment. But this line of reasoning came too late and wasn't fully fleshed out.

"Given the discussion of how human resources are equally important, we don't see why OFWs have to be prioritized based on tonight's debate, so we give the win unanimously to the opposition," Chief Adjudicator Sharmila Parmanand explained.

The announcement was greeted by tears and cheers from the MSU side - debaters and supporters (in both ANC's Quezon City and Cagayan de Oro studios) alike. "MSU Alumni the world over are celebrating this victory!" said the girls' very emotional coach. "Thank you to Square Off: Frankahan for giving us this chance to shine!"

You can catch Square Off: Frankahan - The Drilon Debates every Wednesdays, 8-9pm, with replays every Thursday 1pm, Saturday 1pm and Sunday 2am.

Wow Congratulations to MSU-IIT debating club!

I was wrong last time on referring to them as the MINDS debating club coz the former is already gone. MINDS Debating club founder Prof. Rodolfo Yu told me that MINDS is already gone because it has already proven its might in the debating scene and that it is the turn of the new and younger MSUIITians to show their strut in debating. This new MSUIIT debating club really showed how to show their struts by beating UST and now, UP-Diliman!

IIT being in the top 7 universities in the PHilippines shows how it is closely levelled to UP and UST by beating them in the various fields of academic pursuits and contests.

Way to go Alma Mater!!! :okay::okay:

alright! go IIT. I'm sure the Uni's at Manila will be on the look out for IIT, they're no easy foe. The next hurdle will be Ateneo which I think is the top debate university in the Philippines. But never the less beating UP is no small feat either, but I knew IIT has always had it, they just needed a chance to show what they've got. go go go!

Congrats to the MSU-IIT debaters for winning last in Wednesday's debate. This clearly goes to show that MSU-IIT is now of national caliber, no longer just a powerhouse in Mindanao Island, but all throughout the country. While I salute the debaters for trouncing the UPd debaters, celebration must not be held yet, for the war isn't over yet. The MSU-IIT debaters have fought UPd's weakest team. The best teams from UPd are UPD-A and UPD-B, which the MSU-IIT debaters haven't engaged yet. Nonetheless, this a huge, huge win for a provincial school that has meager budget and quite an underrated school by Manilanyos.

Again, congrats to the MSU-IIT debaters! And, we expect another huge victory in the quarter finals. Make Iligan proud.

By exhibiting their works, the Museum hopes to help foster the birth and growth of future Filipino masters from Mindanao who will contribute to the art corpus of the country.

Currently ongoing at the Galerie Rawari is the group exhibition “K” by the Tinta Artists of Iligan. Curated by museum artist Nick Aca, the exhibit showcases the works in oil and multi-media as well as sculptures in wood by 9 contemporary artists, all coming from Iligan City and members of Tinta.

The artists include Daphne Acal, Reynaldo “Boy” Cielo, Farrah Grace Estabaya, Jacinto Geronimo Jr., Donnie Ray Obina, Jeffrey Ouano, Jeane Claire Razo, Rick Khan Rivera, and Maila Secuban.

The show opened last Monday, January 12, with cocktails and ribbon cutting led by Dr. Fe R. Juarez, Cagayan de Oro’s leading patroness of the arts, with museum guests from Manila and Cagayan de Oro. The show runs until February 7.

Nice pic Alingatong especially showing the towers in the background. On my last visit I brought an AM - FM Radio with me to sample what Broadcast Radio sounded like there. Lots of strong signals and some good music but only one station in English language, at least at the times I was able to listen. It seemed like quite a few strong local stations that could easily overload the front end of a radio with poor selectivity. Those signals must really travel well over the water to some of the other islands. Maybe someday some of them may stream on the internet.

Thanks to the pic posters showing so many " street scenes " in this thread. Many of the details of these scenes are easier to see in the pics than when I was there in person. I like to read the signs, look at the buildings and everything attached to them etc. Being able to enlarge the pics on the pc for a closer look brings out detail that can easily be overlooked while viewing a lot of these scenes in person.

TESDA Iligan pushes for PGMA-Training for Work Scholarship Program

Iligan City (3 February) -- The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority Regional Training Center (TESDA-RTC) in Maria Cristina, Iligan City, has redefined and enhanced the implementation of the Pangulong Gloria Scholarship or PGMA-Training for Work Scholarship Program so it can fuel the training market.

Lamberto B. Jos, RTC administrator, said they encourage high school graduates to avail the Free Skills Training under the Pangulong Gloria Scholarship Program.

He explained that this program would assist the poor and deserving Filipinos to enroll in job-directed training programs and earn the corresponding qualification that will enhance their employability, without cost to the scholar.

"Its main focus is to reduce unemployment and underemployment," Jos added.

"We already have 143 scholars for the first batch and started their training last January 19, 2009, said Jos. The training package includes the training cost, institutional incentive package, training allowance and assessment fees.

The TESDA-RTC offers the following courses: Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Automotive Servicing, Consumer Electronics Servicing, Computer Hardware Servicing, Building Wiring Installation, Refrigeration and Airconditioning Servicing.

Availment of scholarship is on first come, first serve basis.

Other requirements for interested applicants shall be at least 18 years old, with birth certificate preferably issued by the National Statistics Office, and should be physically and mentally fit. (lvg / PIA Iligan)

don't you just love 'em wires?

As a matter of fact, things like those wires are one of many many things that gave me the thought of visiting Iligan City ! A couple of people that I internet chatted with somewhat regularly with prior to my first visit to Iligan kept trying to tell me that Iligan was not a big International Resort City and they hoped that if I visited there I would not be dissapointed. I told them that I was not looking for a big International Resort kind of city like Manila, Tokyo, etc. After viewing hundreds of pictures and video of Iligan put on the internet by thise that live and work there, that is what I wanted to see, what is in those pictures, but to be able to see it all " Live " and in person to experience the things that you can not experience by the pictures alone.

To me, those " rats nest " ( wires that appear twisted, tangled and with no particular order ) of those telephone lines at some of the pole junctions are a real work of art although I would not enjoy trying to find a bad connection in one of them, LOL . I know what is going on inside those wires so maybe that is why I may appreciate them more than the average tourist. Radio has been a life long hobby of mine so the variety and quantity of antennas on tall masts on many of the buildings also interest me.

The variety of buildings, new, refurbished, and old original buildings, different from one street to the next to me give each street or area of the city its own distinct character especially with so many different colors everywhere ! the many signs of various sizes, styles and colors I also find attractive and give Individuality to the wide variety of shops and stores that I found there.

One thing I did notice the abscence of in many parts of Iligan was the lack of " Litter " ! I noticed many people sweeping with what looked like some kind of home made brooms, the likes of which I had never seen before. Maybe next visit I'll try to bring one home as a souvenier.

When you live in a place for a long time you become so used to seeing the same things everyday they are taken for granted and everything just seems to blend in with everything else. For someone who has never seen or experienced these things before, at times, even the smallest detail can turn into something of major interest and I find many of those things in all of your pictures here on SSC-Iligan. I am already getting ideas of things I would like to see and experience on a future visit by looking at these pics and yes, that includes The Wires !:)

I am already getting ideas of things I would like to see and experience on a future visit by looking at these pics and yes, that includes The Wires !:)

you're right Bob. :okay:

Thanks for the correction and that does sound like the one I listened to late at night playing I believe current music and then announcing title and artist. I was hoping to find a talk or news station in English but no luck LOL. Being right on the water I was also interested in trying some AM DX but if I couldn't understand the language (s ) I guess that blows a hole in that theory LOL.

There is a thread somewhere here on SSC about Mindanao Radio stations and I found some that I thought would be interesting to listen to. I find the call sign assignments interesting as Mindanao stations begin with the station prefix DX and I believe stations in the Manila area have a prefix of DZ. In radio talk " DX " usually refers to distant stations.

TKC Steel unit to sell carbon credits

Publicly listed TKC Steel Corp.'s local subsidiary, Treasure Steelworks Corp., is tapping into a new revenue stream by selling carbon credits.

Treasure Steelworks has signed an emission reduction purchase agreement with Ecosecurities Inc. for the development and sale of carbon credits, TKC told the Philippine Stock Exchange.

The carbon credits would be issued out of the greenhouse gas emission reductions in Treasure Steelworks' operations, particularly, the replacement of its oil electric arc furnaces and ladle furnace as well as the capture of waste gas generated by its blast furnace.

Treasure Steelworks is engaged in the production of steel billets and has the largest installed capacity in the country.

Last November, it shut down operations at its plant in Iligan City to accommodate a modernization program that included the installation and commissioning of new furnaces for a more efficient melting process during steel manufacturing.

Treasure Steelworks also put up a blast furnace to be able to make steel from locally available iron ore.

Earlier, TKC Steel said it was eyeing to venture into mining to generate new revenues in light of the current global economic downturn. Its interest was zeroed in on mining iron ore because it complements its core business.

TKC Steel has another subsidiary, Zhang Zhou Stronghold Steel Works Co. Ltd., which makes steel pipes in the southeastern Chinese province of Fujian.

*Improvement of Drainage system
*Pending request to fix or replace Bayug Hanging Bridge
*Naa daw mini-hospital and barangay hall (sponsored by Congressman Belmonte) and only in Hinaplanon and Tubod ra xa...
*Pending request to finish the Barangay Multi-Purpose Hall in purok 1..

^^Thanks for the updates @blitz007.

I hope the improvement of the drainage system will be a priority project to ease the flooding problem of Hinaplanon area. Hope to see more similar projects in and around the city proper too.

I thought there's already a Barangay Hall in Hinaplanon. Why build another one? :ohno:

Putting up a mini-hospital is a no non-sense project. I hope this project will see its light and not just stop in mid air and then leave it unfinished.

The awards, given Friday at Camp Alagar, coincided with the 18th anniversary of the Philippine National Police (PNP), which was graced by the new PNP deputy director general for operations, Police Director Geary Barias.

Misamis Oriental’s 1002nd Police Mobile Group (PMG) was also recognized as the Best Provincial Mobile Group.

Director Barias, in his keynote speech, enjoined the region’s policemen to “remain steadfast in the commitment to keep the honor and pride of wearing your badge as the most widely recognized symbol of police authority and public trust.”

"We must keep the flame of service burning in our hearts," Barias added.

The Iligan City Police Office is headed by Superintendent Oscar Aguda.
