nice set of pics Cyberwizard, that one in fromt of the mall is teriffic, showing many of the things I like there all in one photo. Maybe the next time I visit the mall will be completed. I have not visited any of the bus terminals in Iligan yet as I have arrived by Taxi on previous visits although I would like to see the bus terminal. I wonder if there is anything of interest there other than the busses and the building. In a previous thread I believe I saw a Dunkin Doughnuts. How far from Gaisano Mall are the bus terminls ?

Gaisano Mall's 3rd and 4th floors are still on construction, I expect it would be finished this year and fully operational by 2010.. Northbound Bus Terminal to Gaisano Mall is about 3 kms..

Adlawan edges Oro bet to win chessfest crown

AFTER GM Candidate Banjo Barcenilla, the now forgotten NM Allan Sayson and youthful troika of Bength Largo, Victor Lluch, and Kimmy King, Iligan City can take pride in its newest chess sensation, 19-year-old Felipe Adlawan III.

Fresh from winning Iligan's tourney for Class A players, Adlawan found the sun keeps brightly shining on him when he topped the just-concluded 1st Tangub City Chess Junior Tournament.

Handling black, Adlawan managed to hurdle his toughest test in the seven-round chessfest by refuting the assault of Lennon Hart Salgados in the penultimate sixth round.

Adlawan, in facing the youngest junior participant in the 64-member field, cleverly steered their Sicilian encounter into a theoretically drawn endgame of opposite bishops, then punished the 15-year-old

Cagayan de Oro bet who desperately tried to push his luck.

"Defeating him (Adlawan) is the only way for me to win the championship after learning that he's ahead of me in tiebreak points in case of a draw.

mapilde unya dili sab divided ang prizes," said Salgados, a third-year high school student of Corpus Christi.

Adlawan bagged the champion's purse of P7,000, while Salgados--just heralded secondary boys board 1 ruler of the Cagayan de Oro Quadrangular Meet--settled for the runner-up prize worth P5,000.

Also making it to the top 10 prize circle are James Mark Ruiz, Johnny Wellem Carzano, Alfredo Rapanot Jr., Eltiur Fretz Balacy, Leonardo Pitogo, Ralph Grevel Dalauta, Mandy Ortiz, and Whenchel Datoy.

Salgados and fellow Kagay-anons Rapanot and Dalauta's trip in the Garden City of the South was supported by sports-loving Tan brothers (Robert and NM Roly) of Goldcrest Marketing. (EKA)

this pic puzzled me at first glance. I saw the window and door frames, but there were trees "inside"!. then I looked up and saw the upper floor and realized that I was looking at the reflection of the house at the other side of the road.
you were clever or lucky enough not to catch your own reflection in the glass (unless that's your reflection near the door's handle). mao jud ni ang bantayanan when taking pics of reflective material. it can be embarrassing.
I remember taking pictures of my wife sitting in front of the dresser, and I forgot all about the mirror, and I was wearing only shorts. I realized that only after I saw the print (no digital cameras existed before)

gapinatyanay na man ning SUper 5 og Rural ron... Maayo man kay kita ang maka benefit pero ang tumong sa Rural is really to KILL Super 5! It's just like before when it killed Lillan Express and Sunshine Express...

I think it's important that we patronize Super 5 as well, because once their business closes RTMI will be left to monopolize the fares which is not a good thing.

That's what monopoly is all about. :ohno:

Every 20 minutes man siguro and Super 5. Everytime mo adto mig CdeO sa akong family super 5 jud mi kay libre akong manghud! Hahahaha! I mean, libre ang bata sa Super 5. Then dako pajod ilang bus! As in dako jud. Unlike sa Rural, sitting jud ang bayran. I mean, kung mo lingkod ang bata, plite. Then the worst, gamay ilang mga bus! Hahahaha! Especially katong mga bag-o nila. Gagmay. Hahahahaha PLUS, two hours among byahe, unlike sa SUPER 5 nga 1 and a half hours lang. :)

GALIT????????

Hahahahahaha. Nagpapaliwanag lang. That's only my opinion base on my experience with that two bus companies.

A Bus Stop Too Many

Mike Banos February 08, 2009

http://www.americanchronicle.com/img/galleries/714/0/Ozamis+City+Bus+Terminal.jpg

I wish our good friend Vic dela Victoria of Rural Transit Mindanao, Inc. (RTMI) has a good explanation why it takes their aircon buses a good seven to eight hours to go from Cagayan de Oro to Dipolog.

Granted, that´s a distance of over 300 kilometers, but some 28% of that travel time is spent sitting on our butts waiting for the bus to resume our trip. Worst, routes in some places like Iligan and Valencia cities have two stopovers of over 15 minutes each!

The last time I took this trip, I asked on behalf of the increasingly irate passengers why we were taking so long stopping over the terminals when there wasn´t any passengers coming up or leaving the bus. The dispatcher told me it is company policy to leave space in between buses. Thus, since the last aircon bus to leave the terminal was late in arriving and had just left, we were mandated to wait for another 15 minutes to put space between it and the one we were riding!

Now, if there´s anything that gets my ire it´s B.S. like that and I let the poor man have it from ear to ear, never mind if he was just implementing "company policy". I´m sure even he had a pretty good idea how asinine that reason sounded to passengers who´ve already been in the bus a good six hours since leaving Dipolog. Incidentally, that distance could be negotiated at a good safe speed by private vehicles, inclusive of the stopover to take the Mukas-Ozamiz ferry. That gives you a pretty good idea of the time we spend in terminals.

Besides this "company policy", the buses traveling all over the country also spend an inordinate amount of time in terminals where there aren´t even any passengers to pick up or disembark, because the local government units of that place have mandated they spend an X amount of minutes in their terminals, for which privilege, they will of course have to pay a fee.

If this is not highway robbery in the guise of raising revenues, I don´t know what is. Ultimately, it would be the hapless passengers who are already poor enough to be able to afford only the bus in moving from one point to another who must pay for these asinine levies. If these LGUs want to raise funds, why can´t they just levy a straight monthly fee one very public utility vehicle which uses their roads and bridges? As if ultimately paying for it isn´t ignominy enough, the hapless commuter would also have to waste an inordinate amount of time sitting on his butt while the bus complied with the mandatory stops and spend extra money paying for pay toilets which I some places like Calamba, Misamis Occidental are not even maintained! Where the money collectors get from the passengers go I wonder…

Vic, my friend, I wish there was some other way this stops could be negotiated without having the passenger pay for them with their own time and money. We would forever be in your debt if your could fix this sad state of things in our bus routes.

sakto pud... ngano bitaw walay bus sa RTMI ug uban bus company na mu biyahe like Butuan - Zamboanga.. mu agi paka ug pila ka terminal ug pila ka bus rides...
mang init jud imu lubot nilingkod ug hinulat..

DOLE Iligan extends livelihood assistance to self-employed, unpaid family workers

by Lorry V. Gabule

Cagayan de Oro City (11 February) -- THE Iligan City District Office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) initiated a project to help the business of workers in the informal economy under the DOLE Integrated Livelihood Programs (DILP).

Remegio Cabañog, District Labor Officer, DOLE Iligan City, said the goal of the program is to increase the income, improve socio-economic situation and enhance the capability of the beneficiaries.

Ultimately, Cabañog said that the socio and economic well being of the beneficiaries shall have been significantly improved and the country's poverty level reduced.

A total of PhP 1,583,200.00 was released to the three group proponents of Iligan City.

For Lihok sa Kababainhan Alang sa Kalambuan (LIKASKA) of Barangay Buru-un, received an amount of PhP28,000.00 for their capability building and meat processing training.

Love Enthusiasm and Dedication for Success Association (LEADS) of Barangay San Miguel, on the other hand, received the amount of PhP350,000.00 for swine fattening, and provision for the Individual Project for Informal Economy, with 224 beneficiaries, amounting to PhP1,205,200.00 for trading or vending and services.

She said that their accredited co-partners are the Ayuda sa Tao Incorporated, a non-governmental organization, and the City Development and Livelihood Office (CDLO) of the city.

She emphasized that the co-partners will take charge of the implementation and monitoring of the project.

Meanwhile, DOLE Iligan also launched two similar emergency employment projects, the Integrated Services for Livelihood and Advancement of the Fisherfolks (ISLA) and Tulong Hanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD).

Cabañog said that an amount of PhP4 million was granted to 800 fisherfolks at the city's coastal barangays.

ISLA aims to assist marginalized fisherfolks in Iligan City to make their existing livelihood undertakings grow into viable and sustainable businesses.

TUPAD, on the other hand, aims to provide short-term wage employment to disadvantaged workers.

"The two projects will be implemented in cooperation with the local government unit," she said. (PIA Iligan)

The problem lies in unequal distribution of water supplies. I guess they are currently addressing to that problem. Because my home barangay, Tomas Cabili, I don't have problems on water supply. Ang among problema namo kay sigi kaharos ang among gate valve tungod sa presyon sa kakusog sa tubig! (Our only problem is the gate valve loosens the tread because of very high water pressure!)

Matud pa sa among mangtutudlo nga nakapuyo sa among barangay, kusog nga makabuslot ug baso. (As my instructor told me before [he lived in our barangay before], the water pressure is strong enough to make a hole at the bottom of the glass )

Lanao Norte employees learn journ skills

(11 February) -- IMMARLOU Paclipan was not a born writer by any stretch of the imagination. She even had a hard time on what linking verb to use when writing office communications.

But after finishing the Technical and Press Release Writing course last February 6 and 7 at Chali Beach Resort, Cagayan de Oro City, she now even knows effective press release writing and technical reports preparation.

"This activity is an eye-opener for me. I realized that I can also be a competent writer despite being an accountancy graduate", Paclipan said.

In an interview, Lyndon Calica, Provincial Information Officer of the province of Lanao del Norte, said, "From the seminar participants, five will be chosen to compose the core group of news writers who will complement the news gathering and news writing functions of the Provincial Information Office."

Tapped to conduct the seminar was the Development Center for Asia Africa Pacific (DCAAP), a University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman-based international training and consulting organization, with Professor Danilo Arao, former Chair of the UP Department of Journalism and currently an Assistant Professor of the UP-Diliman College of Mass Communication as resource-person of the seminar-workshop.

"After the two-day course, I was quite impressed with the improvement the participants showed especially on their grammar, sentence construction and writing ability", Arao said. (VNL/PIO-Lanao del Norte)

Iligan City observes Civil Registration Month
by Lorry V. Gabule

(11 February) -- February of every year has been declared as Civil Registration Month. For this year's observation bears the theme, "Civil Registration: Key to Global Opportunities".

Asuncion S. Avenido, Head, Iligan City Civil Registrar's Office, said the Barangay Civil Registration System (BCRS) Training will highlight the celebration.

The training, in coordination with the National Statistics Office (NSO), will be held at the pilot barangay, Kiwalan, Iligan City, on February 12.

Avenido said that they are aiming, through BCRS, at getting a 100% registration of births at the barangay level.

She said that the barangay secretary, midwives, and zone presidents will undergo the training.

There will also be a mass wedding program during the celebration.

"Despite the economic crisis and the suspension of acceptance of petition for correction of clerical error and change of first name in the previous months due to pending appointment of the city registrar, we were able to collect civil registry collections in the amount of P1,058,741.00 for year 2008," Avenido revealed.

Avenido added, "Our report showed that, for births, we have registered a total of 10,258; for marriages, 1,710; deaths, 2,074; out of town registration of birth, 60; and, request for electronic endorsement consisted of advance authentication with 360 for births, 73 for deaths and 129 for marriage."

For legal instruments, Avenido shared that the city have registered the following: authority to use the surname of the father,108; legitimation, 227; availment of Republic Act 9048, also known as "correction of clerical error", 586; change of first name, 54; and court decrees registered,119.

For the period January to December 2008, there were 13 barangays which availed of the mass wedding program of the city, with 626 couples solemnized by City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz.

"As part of our whole-year round activity, we have scheduled a barangay mobile registration for applicants who want to avail the city's mass wedding program," said Avenido.

Moreover, she added that they have a schedule of a day free issuance of certification of births, deaths and marriages on February 27.

The Civil Registry Law, otherwise known as Act of 3753 is on its 78th anniversary celebration this year.

Treasure Steelworks to go ‘green’
Former National Steel out to earn carbon credits
By Amy R. Remo
Philippine Daily Inquirer

Treasure Steelworks Corp., formerly National Steel Corp., announced it would implement this year new projects that would improve its efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions and earn carbon credits.

In a statement, Treasure Steelworks said the world financial crisis and the urgency of the fight against climate change had prompted it to cut energy consumption and use captured gas from its billet-making plant to generate electricity.

It said this effort would qualify for carbon credits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol, under which corporations can earn revenues from carbon credits if they do projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Treasure Steelworks said it would install new electric arc and ladle furnaces and use captured waste gas for production.

Replacing old electric arc furnaces will reduce power consumption, it said.

The electricity to be generated from the capture of waste gas, which is generated by the blast furnace, will replace electricity from the grid, it added.

These “green” activities are contained in a recently signed Emission Reduction Purchase Agreement under which Treasure Steelworks will be assisted in developing its carbon assets by the Philippine office of carbon services company EcoSecurities.

Treasure Steelworks operates a billet-making plant within a 20-hectare complex in the southern city of Iligan.

The plant, formerly owned by the government, is the largest billet maker in the Philippines in terms of installed capacity, at 300,000 metric tons a year.

The capacity will double upon completion and commissioning of the blast furnace, the country’s first, in June.

CLUP Updating Team, mobalik-susi sa Vision Statement sa Siyudad
Thursday, 12 February 2009

(mta)

I think Maria Cristina Falls is open to the Public everyday, however should you wish to view its full grandeur, it is recommended to view it on Saturdays and Sundays at 11:00 a.m.

If I am correct I may add Downtown Cebu (I don't know what street) to Mambaling (Am not familiar on that place). But as far as I know, there is a calesa going to airport and the range is at Pajac, Lapulapu City. I'm sure the Koreans made a ride.

One more thing, there are issues on water supply at Palm Court Sudivision, same barangay (Tomas Cabili). It is true that the water flows at 12 midnight. Not to mention that the subdivision is quite upscale.

In the city website they make a survey kung unsa ang pinaka dapat pagtuunan nga problema sa syudad. What comes number one is the water supply of the city, which i am not surprised. I would recommend on this site that there will be an open discussion on many issues that will address these matters to the city council. We are all concern for our city and its now time to look after of everyone's welfare.

Would it be possible to happen?

Let's wait for another 2 years and the water problem in most areas of Iligan will be solved. I'm sure about it. For now, let's just leave it to the agency concerned. :)

Btw, I have noticed that the LGU is not keen on improving the infrastructures in and around the city. Most of the government buildings are already delapidated. Just take for example the City Tourism Office. Go visit and you'll know why. Most of our roads need repair including the one going to city hall. Others are not even concreted specially at the downtown area. The Pala-o market area particularly the side near DBP is very dirty and chaotic. I'm fully aware that they're not the priority projects of the current administration but these petty things also need proper attention. :ohno:

Water problem sa Iligan dugay na kaayo nga problema nga until now dili gyod masulbad, due to: a) sobra ang politika b) unreliable nga management sa ilang waterworks c) project implementation kadaghanan wala matuman ang specifications sa plano, ug daghan pa gyod....

yah I agree when I was still in grade school way back 1980's and in my first year high school sa St. Michaels College mga 1987, di man ni baha-an. I think they should address this problem specially those city officials that we elect lalo na naging part na ito ng Normin development which is to boom few years from now at hindi lang yan dapat din yung mga Iliganon tumulong like proper disposal ng garbage nila para nd lumala ang prolema sa baha. I hope we all help for future Iligan to become more beautiful ang bigger city.

As I 've said in my previous posts, hindi masyadong binigyan ng priority ng gobyerno ang ganitong mga problema. :ohno:

I remember the Iligan of my childhood then (circa 1970's), except for the big flood in 1975, ordinary heavy downpour brings in not flooded streets but the chorus of frogs croaking in the night till day break... I don't know why, but that cacophony of sound sends me to deep and dreamless sleep. I love it when it rains in Iligan then, its one thing that I missed with my Iligan.

I agree. They have not fully addressed this problem yet. Despite the presence of those creeks, our city is still hampered by those floods because of our clogged waterways.

Let's wait for another 2 years and the water problem in most areas of Iligan will be solved. I'm sure about it. For now, let's just leave it to the agency concerned. :)

B

I will find it VERY interesting to see what happens when the new pipes are brought up to pressure. My house is pretty new, but a hydro pressure test I did was not very encouraging. In the end I found we are just outside the boundary of the project anyway. But I did fix the issues including one problem inside a wall.

I predict some indoor monsoons!:runaway:

Sawin-ay tops Iligan Milo race
Clyde Mariano

ILIGAN CITY – Faced with the prospect of returning home on foot, Roger Sawin-ay won the Iligan leg of the 33rd National Milo Marathon eliminations Sunday.

Sawin-ay left his hometown in Lantapan, Bukidnon with P700 in his wallet, P500 of which he used to pay for his lodging.

Following his gut-wrenching win, Sawin-ay earned P10,000, more than enough to rent a limousine for the trip back home.

Barya na lang natira," Sawin-ay admitted after crossing the finish in 1:15.10.

More than 7,000 runner answered the starting gun for a chance to qualify for the national finals in Manila in October.

Only two runners, however, posted the qualifying time of 1:15.10.

Jeffrey Sotto, who was edged at the finish by Sawin-ay, consoled himself with a ticket to Manila after clocking 1:15.21.

Not as fortunate was third placer Edgar Lapastigue whose time of 1:19.59 did not qualify him to the finals.

Sawin-ay is a 10-year veteran of the Milo race. He finished 12th last year in the finals won by Eduardo Buenavista. His best finish was sixth in 2004.

A father of eight children, Sawin-ay will be making his fifth appearance in the finals, hoping to become the first runner from Bukidnon to bag the annual footrace.

Sana magawa ko ito this year," Sawin-ay said.

Cecile Faith Topia shared the day’s honors with Sawin-ay by winning the distaff side in 1:40.56 and won P10,000. Melyn May Canamo came in second in 1:51.14.

Both Topia and Canamo, however, failed to meet the qualifying criteria of one hour and 35 minutes.

The starting gun was fired by Mayor Lawrence Cruz assisted by Nestle AVP and Milo Events Sports Executive Pat Goc-gon. Also present were Vice Mayor Henry Dy, race director Rudy Biscocho, Northern Mindanao Milo Sports coordinator John Montalbo and other city officials.

not to dampen anyone's spirit, but really, how will these be funded? foreign loans, again? why don't they resort to B.O.T., B.O.O. and other schemes utilizing the private sector? PHP1B is a figure that could vastly improve no. 2. and even *that* can be privatized.
no. 5? are we throwing in the towel in the war against drugs? Iligan is a very small city and if we ask the right persons, we will know where the drugs are coming from. can we not invest in that war to fight it at its roots?
just shooting from the hip, consider:
1 - toll project
2 - privatize
3 - privatize
4 - toll project
5 - divert to war vs. drugs (cheaper & more effective)
6 - toll project (can increase the cost of goods, but not much if funding repayment is stretched)
7 - empower the barangays for them to do the same

thoughts, anyone?:shifty:
