BobNewYorkUSA March 12th, 2009, 08:39 PM hey..hey..hold on there..dont lecture me whats the meaning of stigma...maybe it is you who doesnt know whats the meaning of it...one meaning of stigma is a stain...so i used that because your city is stained by many reports and other media that iligan city is very dangerous and that is why you are lagging in the developments compared to cagayan de oro but upon seeing those photos posted its not that bad after all...
yeah, i am ignorant and have little knowledge of your city...and besides, is it an offense and insensible to made a suggestion?
perhaps broaden your mind my friend..taga-iit man kaha ka!!!:ohno::ohno::ohno:
I have been studying and observing Iligan City for over 3 years now. It seems most of the time someone brings up the subject of safety in Iligan or it not being a safe place, those with the negativity towards it have never even been there. Just about any city in any part of the world can be as safe or unsafe as you want it to be.
There have been many visitors to Iligan city including myself who have had no problem there. For international visitors from western countries there are things that are different such as culture etc. but that does not translate to any kind of safety issue. Just use some common sense as you would in any other city. If you are going to go for a stroll in an dark alleyway with people hanging out there in the middle of the night as you exhibit your expensive jewelery, cash hanging out of your pockets etc. naturally you could be putting yourself in a less than desireable situation. This applies anyplace !
I have been to many different cities during the course of my travels such as New York, London, Edinburgh, Vegas, Miami, Manila and Iligan City. I have never had such a welcomed feeling and great hospitality anywhere than I recieved from my visits to Iligan City. Naturally I used common sense as I would in any other city situation, I had no problems in Iligan despite all the negativity I had heard from those that had never been there.
I even received an official welcome from the Mayor of Iligan City, Mayor Lawrence Cruz in his office at city hall. For me that was a real first as I had never had that anywhere else.
There is an individual who has and continues to travel all over Mindanao and publishes blogs about his travels and other information on his website about the ins and outs, the good spots and the not so good spots of the island. He too has given Iligan City the thumbs up for safety and to me he is a fellow American so reading his blogs nd other published information there is No translation loss.
How about when 10,000 people on another part of Mindanao felt it necessary to evacuate their homes and towns a few months back. They could have gone to many other places but where did they go for safety and refuge ? Iligan City of course. Can 10,000 people be wrong ? They were welcomed and looked after as best as possible. I even sent a small donation as the only way I could offer a helping hand from the other side of the world.
I believe Iligan is one of the first cities on Mindanao to be city-wired with security cameras and they even let you sample them from any place in the world right here on the internet ! If it were that unsafe in Iligan do you really think they would show that to the whole world ? I don't think so.
Try riding around on the New York City subway system for a few hours. Then try riding around on the London Underground for a few hours, then go to Iligan City ! I have done these things and a lot more and although I kept my wits about me and used common sense, I never felt any safety or security difficulty on my visits in Iligan. Why not try it for yourself sometime ?
When you hear people speak or write about " the warmth and hospitality of The Iliganons " there really is a lot of truth to that and for someone to tell me otherwise you'd have to prove it.
WHen I first arrived in Iligan City, I only had the clothes on my back as the airline I traveled half way around the earth on lost my luggage somewhere in Taipei. Not only did the hotel management express their dissapointment, they asked me for the phone numbers of the airline, they made all the calls to Manila ( long distance charges applied ) and when I checked out they said the phone charger were complements of the house. Naturally the hotel is managed and staffed by Iliganons !
I have made some lifelong friendships in Iligan City and I am planning on returning there again. Would I plan something like that if I thought it was not a safe place for me to go on a vacation ? It may not rank as a popular International Tourist city ( yet ) but for me it was one of the best places I have ever visited.
Iligan is something to be " Experienced " and I would not hesitate recommending a visit there to anyone.
Iligan CIty.................Simply Amazing !

Never underestimate the warmth and hospitality of Iliganons !
TONZI March 12th, 2009, 10:47 PM And aside from that@Fernandopoe, @BobNewYork is an Iliganon himself :) You don't wanna mess up with Iligan or you mess up with @BoB! joke only
Not really, @FernandoPoe, perhaps it's high time also that we need also to know that there are certain issues why most places in Mindanao have been put with such a connotation that's something to do with safety. Not only Iligan but as well as other places in Mindanao. Take for instance how many investors who opted to be in Cebu rather than any other place in Mindanao? It's not only Iligan but the whole island! And to think of it, the security problem is way further south in two separate islands outside of the mainland of Mindanao and that's in Basilan and Sulu! :ohno:
This is because our media has failed to notice the difference of Iligan and Cagayan de Oro to Sulu or Davao City to Basilan because they think the whole of Mindanao is a war zone! They failed to realize the distance of those war torn places from the other places in Mindanao such as General Santos City, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Davao, Butuan or Surigao cities. They think each and every city is laden with the same "stigma" (as you coined it) that Sulu and Basilan has.
The problem is with the media @Fernandoepoe, not with us, nor our failure to put an Iligan projects thread or any other nuisances that you may think. We dont have any problem in Iligan with security nor are we having problem without those investors. We are happy with what is Iligan now. We are happy with its humbling mix of nature and industry. We are happy Christians trading with the Muslims beside us. We are happy even without those gigantic malls that the other cities have. We are happy that with its present state, Iligan City has a "distinction" that it can respect of its own. Although what is with other cities is also what some, if not all, of us also wish, but those are merely wishful thinking coz we love our humble Iligan City. Who wouldn't want big development for their city? BUT, with It's natural resources, the waterfalls, the humble people and the expenditure of living which is not high unlike that of Cebu or Davao and Manila. I ask you, In what "highly urbanized city" in the Philippines can you go around the city with just a P 10.00 bill and be able to go back home with only that as an amount? Where can find a city where you can only have P 10.00 pesos as a back-and-forth public transport fare? That alone, and with the low price of food here, we can live our day to day without the problem of thinking to spend big unlike those "mega cities".
We have come to love our city, with or without "Gloria's" assistance or any other investments that may pass us. With or without the president's devotion to the city that "hosted" her younger years. We love this city as it is, simple, humble, and down-to-earth. And just as @Bobnewyork said that " the warmth and hospitality of The Iliganons " are unlike any other. Those are the reasons why we opted for Iligan's simplicity rather than trying more than hard to promote for more industries or other investments but surely, if those investments may pour in, then why not? We are open for any visitors or investors who are more than willing to live here than just "invest". We are open those are willing to make relationships and friends than just eat, dine, and sleep. We are hospitable as we are to people who have come to share the love of an Iliganon which we cannot see elsewhere but here. But, @Bobnewyork himself, though not coming from here, has shared that same feeling as an Iliganon. That's why he's no alien to all of us here in Iligan CIty thread. We know him for his love of Iligan just as we love our beloved city.
Don't worry about Iligan @Fernandoepoe, we, the city dwellers ourselves, know what's best for us for we live here. No one will ever know the needs and wants of Iligan but US who see the real SCORE of Iligan's state.

g0Rs March 13th, 2009, 11:43 AM Iligan City launches computerized tax collection
by Lorry V. Gabule
Iligan City (13 March) -- Internal Revenue Deputy Commissioner Lilia C. Guillermo witnessed the launching of the Integrated Tax System (ITS) in Revenue District Office (RDO) No. 101, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) in Iligan City, on March 12.
"This is the last phase of our Bureau's Nationwide Rollout of Computerized System (NRCS) Program out of the remaining 75 non-computerized RDOs from 2007 to 2008, totaling to 115 computerized districts nationwide," said Commissioner Guillermo.
She said the project is aimed at improving tax collection, providing better service to taxpayers, and deter tax evasion, adding that the NRCS aims to complete the computerization of the operations of the BIR all over the country.
The Commissioner explained that the computerization program automates the registration, collection, returns processing, and taxpayer accounting processes in the Bureau.
"In this way, it enables the BIR to better respond to taxpayer requests and reduce transaction time for them. Finally, by enabling the Bureau to establish a more comprehensive data bank and compare data across in different data clusters, it will make identifying tax evaders easier," Guillermo said.
While it is true that said Program would make the operations of the RDO more efficient and effective, Revenue District Officer Casan P. Azis of Iligan said that the Bureau has personnel trained in the different tasks in operating the automated systems under the program, and NRCS provided equipment like desktop computers, printers, filing cabinets and computer tables and chairs, along with the required electrical upgrades and Local Area Network (LAN) cabling.
The procurement of the equipment and training of BIR personnel were supported by the Millennium Challenge Account-Philippines Threshold Program Technical Assistance Project (MCA-PTP-TAP).
Phyllis Cox, chief of Party, MCA-PTP-TAP, said that the project assists the Philippine government to improve revenue administration and fight corruption.
"It is supported by a US$ 20.6 million grant from the Millennium Challenge Corporation, a US government corporation that supports development programs and projects all over the world. The grant is administered by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)," Phyllis Cox disclosed.
Nonetheless, RDO Azis took the opportunity of thanking the participants of their response to RDO's invitation for this purpose. (PIA Lanao del Norte)

The defunct Iligan Day Inn will soon be named Iligan Medical Center College (IMCC)-Annex. This is to the fact that the school is finding ways into accommodating the growing number of enrollees. IMCC-Annex, was originally planned for the HRM department, however, with provident reason the plan was cancelled. Instead they plan to utilized the 4-storey building by putting up a Library, 2 Computer Laboratories, Mini-Hotel and Classrooms. General subjects in HRM and Information Technology courses are soon to be held in this building.
At present, massive planning and renovations have already been made to meet its inauguration date.

Imperial Plaza Appliance moving to a bigger and better location ? I enjoyed going to this store in Iligan and bought a few things there. The sales people seemed to know what they are selling, Delivery was prompt and when promised to multiple locations around the city. All display products were well identified and prices displayed. Salespeople were not " Pushy " and spent all the time necessary answering my questions. Nice variety of items available for sale too.
I enjoy going to stores like this to see differences in comonly used things here and how they differ in other parts of the world. I had never seen plastic clothes washing machines before and some of the ones I saw in appliance stores in Iligan really interested me. One of these visits I might bring one home with me as a souvenier !
Another store I really liked was a Computer store near the Plaza. When I first entered it I could not help but notice the place is stacked from floor to ceiling with lots of great computer stuff. Some of which was familiar to me and some not which made for an interesting shopping experience. Once again, the people in this store knew what they were selling and answered any and all questions I had and I bought some things there. I can really enjoy places like that. I would still like to find out what is in those AVR boxes everyone seems to use there on PC's. I bought one for a friend and really wanted to drill out the rivets holding the conver on it to see what is in there. Things like that are not in common use here. Some people use a " UPS " but I have not ever seen stand alone AVR here. As a matter of fact, I recently bought a APC brand UPS here at my home and on the bottom is says " Made In Philippines " !
I often describe myself as not being a typical tourist. Then again is there such a thing as a typical tourist ? That is one more thing I like about Iligan City, no matter what kind of tourist someone feels they might be there is so much variety in Iligan there should be something for everybody !
Additionally, in those pics of the City Plaza and many of the other pictures it is not always what you see, but what you don't see as well. I seldom see much " litter " on the street photos and I know these are not retouched pics where the litter has been taken out of it. I did not see much litter in the streets at all in Iligan when I have been there to visit. Can't say that about a lot of the other places I have visited.
Iligan City..............Simply Amazing !

Tree Climbing In NPC Reserved Forests
NPC Agus 6 Hydro Electric Power Plant
Maria Cristina Reserved Forests
Iligan City
The Benefits of Tree Climbing
Recreational (technical) tree climbing has a number of distinct advantages over many other adventure activities.
Here are some of them:
• Tree climbing is good exercise. Tree climbing is not only fun, but it's also an excellent workout. Though it's not nearly as demanding as it appears, climbing is great exercise for the arms and legs. Climbers work many muscle groups they often don't use elsewhere, and climbing is also great for the spine. The extra bonus to this exercise is that it is stimulating and never boring.
• Tree climbing is very safe. When climbers carefully follow the basic "do and don't" rules, they are virtually assured of a safe climbing experience. CARE has never had anyone fall out of a tree or get badly injured during one of our events.
• Trees are everywhere! You don't have to look far to find a good climbing tree, especially if you're in a natural area. Even in an urbanized setting you can usually find a tree worth climbing.

Maganda na sana but I really hope the city government would allocate a portion of the city's budget to finance the widening of poblacion-tominobo highway to decongest the traffic in the area.

d4rkhowl March 15th, 2009, 06:15 PM Very inspiring development for Iligan City.
With me living within the vicinity of the city proper, I suggest that the local government put large metal boxes with covers so that the people will have a place to throw their trash. I hate it when evening comes, tons and tons of garbage of different establishments here starts to pile up.
Yeah, Iligan city is 'clean' during the daytime, but when evening comes, maybe around 10pm onwards people have no choice but to put the garbage on the street waiting to be picked up by the collector. Worse still, 'junk boys' tend to scatter these when they try to look for recyclable items.
It is not good to think that we have a decent nightlife establishments open here and guests and visitors would see this.
Just a suggestion though.

Every time i have guests coming over to visit me in Iligan City i always make it a point to let them stay in one of the nicest accommodations the city has to offer. It is located in Isabel Village in Pala-o. The name of the place is ESMERALDA.
I love it here because the place is unpretentious and very simple. It is also away from the city so you are assured of quiet time. The place has 3 beautifully designed rooms. They only accept guests through recommendations and referrals. The garden is very serene and relaxing to look at. The entrance to the rooms are very reflective of the owners personality. Simple and clean.

The room is spacious and the bed is huge. Very comfortable. The price is affordable. Just below 1500 per day. And that includes breakfast for two. They have 24 hour security service. The room is equipped with cable television, hot and cold shower and air-conditioning.

I first learned of Chedings " Pride of iligan " peanuts right here on SSC and it was no surprise to me to see them prominently on display in the window of the sari sari at Elena Towers. The first time I went into this store I grabbed a couple of quarter kilo packages of them along with some bottled carbonated soft drink. Once again, something that had only been in my imagination for a long long time was now becoming a reality and I savored the moment as I opened the first package of Chedings Peanuts. It did not take me too long before I was at that sari sari again to buy more of them.
Unfortunately it can cause delays upon re-entry through US Customs to bring food from a foriegn land as you have to go through additional inspection by US Agricultural Customs so I consumed the last of my Chedings peanuts durning the long flight home.
I did keep some of the attractive pckaging as some day it will end up in a large wall mounted picture frame along with some of my " Best of Iligan " souveniers. Next visit I hope to be able to visit the Chedings store shown in Alingatongs pic.

The Iligan City Waterworks System gears up for declogging major water pipelines with its Maintenance and Construction Divisions digging out for three of the main pipeline junctions alongside Macapagal Highway .
City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz has ordered the declogging activity scheduled on March 23, this year, after ICWS authorities conducted pressure testing showing the water pressure of 180psi from Ditucalan source has gone down to 105psi at Nonucan and has plunged further to only 17psi at Camague area, making it imperative to act on the problem.
Furthermore, ICWS Manager Christine Milagros Orbe spearheaded a Clean-up Drive surrounding Ditucalan Spring, the city’s largest water source, in preparation for the office’s tree growing activity on March 20 in observance of the Water Conservation Month this whole month of March. They intend to come up with 500 trees of different species such as Narra, Acacia and Mahogany to protect the watershed.(EAMayormita-ICTC / CIO Press Release)

^^ It's nice to see tall trees than seeing a city forested with concrete buildings. It would be so hot just like Manila. Trees and grasses give more fresh ambiance to the setting of the place coz they give you a relaxing feeling as the wind passes through their leaves before it reaches your skin. More trees means more release of oxygen and elimination of carbon dioxide.

I know we've already moaned about this before in this forum, but apparently no action has been taken on this?
there is a law that makes it criminal for people to tap into the power lines without authorization. *this*, IMHO, should also be criminal, and the proper government agency prosecuted and kicked out of his job:bash:
at times like these, this is plain and simple irresponsibility.
how is it that rich nations are so concerned of conservation, and a struggling country like ours is so wasteful? :ohno:

kuspawix March 19th, 2009, 06:15 AM PAL to offer flights to and from Iligan
08/11/2008 | 02:14 AM
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — Philippine Airlines (PAL) will operate the Manila-Iligan and Cebu-Iligan routes next month through 76-seater planes under low-cost brand PAL Express.
Iligan City Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz said last week PAL would again be active at the nearby Baloi Airport, with flights tentatively scheduled to start on Sept. 27.
Domingo Duerme, PAL senior assistant vice-president for Mindanao sales, said the airline would fly up to four times a week from Iligan City to Manila. The Cebu-Iligan route will have three flights weekly. A 50-seater Bombardier Quiet (Q300) jet propeller will fly the Cebu-Iligan route, while a Q400 will operate in the Manila-Iligan route. At present, passengers going to Manila and Cebu have to come in this city first.
Mindanao provinces and cities west of this city, including Lanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur and Marawi City, make up a significant market not only for airline but also for shipping companies.
Most ferries from Northern Mindanao, including this city’s port, going to Cebu and Manila pass by the port of Iligan to pick up passengers from northwestern provinces of Mindanao.
Iligan City has been served for years by the Maria Cristina Airport, but PAL stopped flights of its less-efficient Fokker and Sunriser planes due to increasing costs and low passenger and cargo traffic.
Iligan is among the most important ports of Mindanao, hosting at least a dozen large manufacturing plants. The city has a population close to 400,000 people. — Geefe P. Alba, BusinessWorld

g0Rs March 20th, 2009, 03:51 PM Bidding alang sa Drug Rehab Center Project sa siyudad, napahigayon kagahapong adlawa
Friday, 20 March 2009
Naglangkob sa phase I sa drug rehab project ang site development, earthwork, backfilling, concrete work formwork and scaffolding, masonry, plumbing ug electrical. (mta/boy decena)

(mta)

Sana, before they implement this kind of project, ayusin muna nila ang ciy hall. THE CITY HALL LOOKS LIKE A SICK MAN. isali na pati ang Tourism Office.
g0Rs March 20th, 2009, 04:01 PM Sana, before they implement this kind of project, ayusin muna nila ang ciy hall. THE WHOLE AREA OF CITY HALL LOOKS LIKE A SICK MAN.
Kung ako lang ang masusunod. Iconvert nila ang City Hall into a museum and then transfer the city hall to another location. Total may proposed government center naman. Gawin din nila ang buong Buhanginan Hill into a park.
TONZI March 20th, 2009, 04:01 PM ^^ And also, they should have an office that is very much adept with the necessary knowledge and backgrounds to implement that structure once the BOT contract is finished. An office that will have the capability to maintain and provide necessary personnel that knows the technology behind it and not to mention an office that would beautify the whole city hall complex as such system would become a "tourist" area.
Parking spaces should be provided that should also accommodate buses and other vehicles. Reconcreting of the road network of the city hall complex should also be done.
Alingatong March 20th, 2009, 04:04 PM Even employees at city hall are already complaining about their dirty CR. Compared to othr HUCs, Iligan Ciy Hall ang talagang kulilat.

Oo nga no. Pagkatapos, saka sila mag-isip tungkol sa cable car na yan. :ohno:
TONZI March 20th, 2009, 04:14 PM Referring to the obnoxious CR of our City Hall:
Ano ba ang ginagawa ng City General Services Office (CGSO) ng Iligan who is the main office that caters to those kind of services such as the "clean and green"? They are the one's who are into that aspect of the city hall which is to beautify aside from their main job which is to provide "bidding processes" for Purchase orders as well as providing the necessary services for the "procurement of materials" for several offices.
Nakakahiya naman yan, city hall ata yan and the major paperworks are always done there.
Hmmm... ask niyo kaya ang mga big bosses diyan who has the necessary "manpower" kasi sila ang may maraming taong napatrabaho coz they provide jobs for people who are close to them.
As usual, the typical "baho" system of our government offices are still prevailing!

congratulations to the 24th thread of Iligan City and Lanao de Norte...hope to see more beautiful photos and of course developments from my birthplace...
about kuspawix entry in the previous thread about PAL Express flying in Maria Cristina Airport, should be nice if this would come true...how nice it would be flying in directly to Iligan City...:)the reason is of course the safety/security within the airport and approach towards the runway. anyway i hope to see more updates about commercial operation in Maria Cristina Airport, and mr.boombox has been so kind enough giving updates even opening up a question in airlines thread here in SSC...Godspeed Iligan....

BobNewYorkUSA March 21st, 2009, 03:55 PM I have often heard of the " brownouts " in Iligan City and other areas. When you say " Brownout " are you talking about Low Voltage ( incnadescent lights appear brown instead of white ) or are you talking about no electricity at all ? Here, brownout means low voltage. When we speak of a " Blackout " here it means No voltage.
With the nearby hydro electric plant what is the reason for the frequent brownots I hear and read about there ? Fortunately I did not experience any of this during my visits.

You're right there Bob. But here in our place, it's a common thing not to distinguish between brownout from blackout in its real context. We used to believe that if there's an absence of electricity in a certain part of the city, it's called brownout but a total absence of power in the whole of the city, it's called blackout. Funny but it's true.

tonight March 22nd, 2009, 05:30 AM Global Steel takes creditors to Singapore court to prevent declaration of default (http://mb.com.ph/articles/199711/global-steel-takes-creditors-singapore-court-prevent-declaration-default)
By LEE C. CHIPONGIAN
Global Steel Philippines Inc., formerly the National Steel Corp., has filed a complaint against its creditors in a Singapore court to stop them from declaring it in payment default.
Banking sources said the Singapore court has scheduled a hearing for the Global Steel complaint filed last December.
Its creditors include Land Bank of the Philippines, Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co., Philippine National Bank, Bank of Commerce, China Banking Corp., United Coconut Planters Bank and Rizal Commercial Banking Corp.
This is not the first time that the steel firm had been declared in default when in 2005, it stopped paying its creditors debt amounting to P12.25 billion.
Included in the steel firm’s restructuring program is the settlement of the local taxes in Iligan, which creditors wanted waived. However sources said the banks were close to reaching an agreement on the local taxes but needed to renegotiate it again because of the change in government after the local elections.
Global Steel's manufacturing operations were suspended in December. One of the reasons for the cessation of operations is the decrease in global demand for steel. The company is a principal supplier of flat products in the Philippines and other markets in South East Asia. Among its products are hot rolled coils, hot rolled plates, cold rolled coils (fullhard, annealed) and tinplates. It produces two million tons of steel a year.

Cristina, Sta. Elena, Tomas Cabili, Tubod, Mahayahay, Ubaldo Laya, Poblacion, Tibanga, San Miguel, Villaverde, Sto. Rosario, Saray, Bagong Silang, Santiago ug Tambacan. Mipasabot si Engr. Jaime Sato, hepe sa Engineering and Programming Division sa ICWS, nga pagahimoon nila ang maong declogging tungod kay posibleng adunay nakasampong karon nga mga materyales sa maong mga linya, nga mao’y usa sa hinungdan sa pagkunhod sa pressure sa tubig. how about this word "capon"..we use this word for veterinary practice-romoval of testicles of hogs and dogs..this is not the proper term to be used to..caponization is one way of removing organs of chicken or birds or any class avis..pero ang ato "akong baboy gikapnan daan arun kusog mudako"..or ang akong iro gikapnan kay arun mutambok"..unaware that the term capon is for chicken or birds and "castration" is for veterinary use like dogs and hogs..:lol::lol:ang pangutana, unsay binisaya sa "castration'?..:lol::lol:
