g0Rs April 2nd, 2009, 04:44 AM Top Export Earners In NM/ March 30, 2009 (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=4&id=2278)
JIGGER J. JERUSALEM - Correspondent
Oleo chemicals remained as the top commodity export in the Northern Mindanao region in 2008, according to the Dept. of Trade and Industry (DTI).
Pilipinas Kao, based in Jasaan, Misamis Oriental, which produces oleo chemicals, has been consistent in its role as the top dollar earner in the region, accounting for 18.88 percent, or $167.90 million, of the regional exports.
Following closely is the crude coconut oil of Iligan City, which contributed 15.31 percent or $136.17 million.
Ranking third are the products of Global Steel Philippines, Inc. hot and cold rolled coils which placed their export contribution at 14.35 percent or $127.69 million.
The rest of the top ten products included the region’s traditional products such as sintered ore, canned pineapple products, conchin coconut oil, finished lumber, sugar and cement products.
Iligan City’s Abaca Pulp is the region’s new export winner and has consistently been one of the top ten since the first quarter of 2008, with Germany as its main market, a DTI report pointed out.
The total export earnings, based on the top ten commodities for 2008, reached $889.55 million.
On the sectoral level, coconut-based products (crude coconut oil, oleo chemicals, dessicated coconut, etc.) provided the biggest export share at 43.13 percent or $383.62 million, last year.
In terms of growth rate, mineral-based products made a significant upswing from $1.5 million in 2007 to $8.89 million, indicating an increase of 488 percent.
Also noted in the DTI report were the substantial increases for rubber products (192 percent or $10.90 million), fresh fruits and vegetables (97.96 percent or $34.92 million), and special transactions (193.95 percent or $6.53 million)
On the downside, exports for aquamarine products and gifts, toys and house wares have decreased by -17.31 percent and -11.82 percent, respectively.

daghan jud honor karon
Wind Shear April 2nd, 2009, 06:46 AM Probably there are more students enrolled on this batch.
According to the "Sacred" Student Handbook of MSU-IIT, A School of Engineering Technology (and School of Computer Studies enrolling Computer Engineering Techology) student has an average grade of 1.20 and better upon graduation is not honored as summa cum laude. Rather, he/she is honored as with highest honors (which is the English translation of summa cum laude).
The reason, in my opinion, is all SET courses are associates (will finish in 3 years), not a bachelor's degree (will finish in 4 or 5 years). The Latin honors (cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude) are reserved to the bachelor's degree.
tonight April 2nd, 2009, 01:53 PM good evening :)

g0Rs April 3rd, 2009, 11:39 AM PNP Iligan bares 'Oplan Semana Santa'
by Lorry V. Gabule
Iligan City (1 April) -- The Philippine National Police-Iligan City Police Office (PNP-ICPO), in coordination with other law enforcement agencies, has formulated Oplan Semana Santa, an effective security system to adequately prevent any acts of lawlessness during the observance of the Holy Week.
P/SSupt Oscar Aguda, officer-in-charge, ICPO-PNP, said they need to intensify police visibility imperative to prevent the occurrence of crimes, and to address traffic congestion, too.
Criminal elements particularly terrorist and Lawless Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Groups (LMGs) might take advantage of the situation to conduct their nefarious activities against civilian populace and vital government or private installations.
In the OPLAN Semana Santa, we coordinated with religious ministers/priests and churches in the police' respective Area of Responsibility (AOR) for the slated activities, said P/SSupt Aguda.
Aguda added, we will be deploying uniformed personnel for visibility in the vicinity of churches, other ritual places, seaports and bus terminals of police AORs, and continue to secure vital installations, as well.
We opted to deploy plainclothes personnel to intensify intelligence operation, monitoring the plans and activities of criminal elements and other threat groups. Also, we coordinated with 104th Brigade, Philippine Army, and the 10th PRMG (Police Regional Mobile Group) in case there is a need for augmentation.
Force multipliers like the radio groups and other civic organizations have been mobilized to support the police elements in providing assistance to the general public ensuring the city's peace and order.
Likewise, barangay chairmen were advised to utilize their CVOs (Civilian Volunteer Organizations) and Barangay Tanods in providing security in their respective AORs.
The Explosives Ordnance Device (EOD), using the sniffing dogs of the K-9 Unit will conduct paneling in all major churches in the city and other places of convergence, sanitizing its places of engagement one hour prior to the activity in observance of the Holy Week.
The Traffic Management Enforcement Auxiliary Group (TMEAG) and other traffic auxiliaries shall be utilized to assist in the maintenance of the normal flow of traffic and establishment of motorist assistance along national highways during the week's celebration.
The regular established checkpoints are still at its strategic places to preempt any hostile attacks by terrorists, LMGs, and other threat groups, Aguda commented. (PIA-Lanao del Norte)

ILigan City -- City Councilor Alfredo Busico recently was quoted as saying that the Cable Car project which is envisioned to connect Mount Agad-agad with Buhanginan Hill is postponed for the time being.
This is to give way to the P 495 million water expansion project under the administration of Mayor Lawrence Cruz, Busico added.
The feasibility study aspect of the cable project is already completed; Busico said and is now awaiting implementation in the event that funds for said project will be available, even as he added that it is also possible that some private group will offer funding on said project. This might be on the Build-Operate Transfer (BOT) or on a bond flotation scheme.
Alingatong April 4th, 2009, 04:23 AM Tomas Cabili Foundation launched
April 3, 2009, 6:00pm
Iligan City – The Tomas Cabili Foundation was launched in this city last week with the honoree’s son, Tomas Cabili, Jr., leading the ceremony.
Organizers said the main objective of the Tomas Cabili Foundation is to help uplift the lives of Muslims and Christians in Lanao del Norte and in Lanao del Sur, through education and livelihood programs.
The foundation was launched in simple but festive rites attended by some 300 members of the Cabili clan.
The celebration consisted of four events – the unveiling of the Tomas Cabili bust, the commemoration of his 52nd death anniversary (Senator Tomas Cabili Sr. died alongside President Ramon Magsaysay in a plane crash in 1957); presentation of the Tomas Cabili Foundation’s objectives, organization and initial plans; and the grand family reunion which was held at the Maria Cristina ballroom in this city.
Tomas L. Cabili served as senator from 1946 to 1955, and then became the secretary of National Defense.
Cabili was the only delegate of the Constitutional Convention who did not sign the Constitution, because of his belief that the Charter was limiting the rights of the Muslims in the undivided Lanao in Mindanao.
He foresaw that the Constitution would someday bring about trouble if not war in Mindanao.

Alingatong April 4th, 2009, 10:32 AM 8 cities connect with Phil. Business Registry
April 4, 2009
Eight more cities have been electronically connected with the Philippine Business Registry (PBR) as more local government units (LGUs) had signified their interest to participate in the project that would simplify business registration in the country.
These cities are Angeles, General Santos, Iligan, Malabon, Marikina, Navotas, Pasay and Quezon City. This will bring to 11 LGUs the total participants to the PBR, after Muntinlupa joined the cities of Caloocan and Mandaluyong as the third LGU to be electronically connected with the project.
Through the PBR, prospective businesses in a locality can now experience complete business registration from the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for business name (BN) registration, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) for Tax Identification Number (TIN) validation/generation and Certificate of Registration (CoR), to the local government for business permit.
Applicants will no longer provide repetitive basic information to these agencies as PBR offers a single online application form across these agencies.
They will also be informed of their application status through the PBR dashboard as well as the e-mail response from each of these agencies.
PBR project specialist Chichie Pastrana said other core business registration and licensing agencies have already signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on the implementation of PBR.
These are the Cooperative Development Authority, Department of Interior and Local Government, Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-IBIG), League of Municipalities of the Philippines, League of Cities of the Philippines, Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry and Social Security System.

Alingatong April 5th, 2009, 04:16 AM Bar exam No. 2 standing up for Muslim women
By Rex Godinez-Ortega
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:12:00 04/05/2009
MANILA, Philippines — Mylene Amerol-Macumbal, the second-placer in the 2008 bar examinations, hopes her achievement will help to prove that the “veiled woman” is not repressed.
“She is actually capable of doing great things while staying within the bounds of her faith,” she said.
“I have never been prouder that I am a Muslim and a Moro,” said Mylene, 28.
A graduate of the Mindanao State University (MSU) College of Law Extension at the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology, Mylene became the first Muslim woman to place second in the bar exams.
This is also the first time that the MSU law college in Iligan City has succeeded in placing a graduate on the top 10.
Iligan City was abuzz with the news of Mylene’s feat, especially resonant as it is also the home of the country’s first Muslim woman lawyer, Lindao Macarambon Boransing.
“There is still discrimination in this country against Muslims and Muslim women due largely to misconceptions,” Mylene said.
“I hope to help erase those misconceptions,” she said.
Mylene taught accounting at MSU-IIT before settling down to becoming a full-time mother to five-year-old son Rocky.

Mylene’s husband said he convinced her to study law in Iligan as he believed in the professors of the law college there. She wanted to apply to a law school in Manila.
“We use the same books and our teachers know the same laws. There really is no difference. Now, I guess my theory was proven correct,” the judge said with a smile.

By Rex Godinez-Ortega
She is married to Arassad Macumbal, the municipal trial court judge of Bacolod town in the province of Lanao del Norte.
The Macumbals are a family of achievers.
Mylene graduated magna cum laude when she took her accounting degree, also at MSU-IIT, in 2002. She placed 18th in the CPA board exam the following year. She also graduated magna cum laude from law school in 2008.
Her husband, Arassad, is a lawyer and civil engineer and placed 9th in the civil engineering board exams of 1993.
Son Rocky is also at the top of his class at Kumon Philippines, a tutorial school for young achievers, in Iligan City.
Mylene’s father, Tammy Amerol, a former internal revenue regional director who died recently, placed 12th in the CPA board examinations in the 1970s.
It was her father who got Mylene interested in the law.
“He was a frustrated lawyer. He stopped during his first year at law school because he was so busy with work and he had me and my three brothers to always bother him when he was studying,” Mylene said of her father.
“His law books were just there in our home library, together with the encyclopedias I loved to read. So I could not help but open them, and the rest is history,” she said.
Mylene said her mother, Nora Amerol, also instilled in her the value of studying.
But she pointed to her husband, Arassad, as her inspiration and mentor.
“He really pushed me to study, since day one. He told me, ‘Don’t just study for class, study for the bar.’”

PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday received as gifts for her birthday pledges from her Cabinet to ensure lasting peace and order, and to deliver on major infrastructure projects before yearend to improve the country’s competitiveness.
The President, who celebrated her 62nd birthday yesterday, earlier said her wish was for the Philippines to overcome the challenges posed by the economic crisis.
"We should start a new era of volunteerism and embrace the spirit of unity in these trying times. We should all unite behind this movement: the government, the Church, civic groups and every Filipino citizen," she said in a speech after attending mass at the St. Augustine Parish in Lubao, Pampanga province.
The President also administered the oath of office to 120 new members of the Citizen Armed Forces Geographical Units with Northern Luzon Command chief Lt. Gen. Isagani C. Cachuela. Mr. Cachuela also announced the capture of Pampanga province’s top New People’s Army leader, 33-year-old Jose Carmen alias Ka Roman last March 30.
In a separate interview, Presidential Management Staff Director-General Hermogenes C. Esperon, Jr., yesterday said he would ensure delivery of all major infrastructure projects committed in last year’s State of the Nation Address before yearend, including the Halsema Highway and Bontoc-Tabuk-Tuguegarao Road in the Cordillera Administrative Region and Iligan Circumferential Road in Mindanao.

Octavarium April 6th, 2009, 07:22 PM The Holy Week marks the holiest week of the entire year. In Iligan, various faiths observe, reflect, renew, and celebrate it in a week full of activities. Around the world, people from other countries have their own traditions, customs, and practices as well.
I'd like to share with you guys some of the photos I took while spending a quiet afternoon at St. Michael's Cathedral. It's my second time to take photos there in two years and I can say I was lucky I was able to capture these images that show a new perspective, a story, a moment, that I believe we can relate to.
Thank you for viewing.

BobNewYorkUSA April 7th, 2009, 06:24 AM I recently returned from visiting friends in Las Vegas, one of the few places in the USA where there is a Jollibee ! Las Vegas, Nevada is a huge and ever expanding city in a nevada desert surrounded by mountains. Although when most people hear or see pics of Las Vegas it is the famous " Las Vegas Strip " of resor t casinos that those that have not been there think of. In addition to " the strip " there are thouseands of stores in what seems at times like one huge continuous shopping mall !
In one part of the city highly populated by many Filipino OFW's is where Jollibee, Chow King and Red Ribbon bake shop can be found.
One of many things that make the USA unique, is that it is made up of people and cultures from the world over. Each different nationality that migrated here throughout the history of the USA has brought with them much of their own culture and heritage and to me, that includes Jollibee !
My friends in Las Vegas had never heard of Jollibee. While visiting my long time friends in Las Vegas, I brought with me some DVD's I had made of my pics of my visits to Iligan and CDO, along with pics taken from SSC-Iligan, Youtube videos about Iligan and of course pics of my visits there. Needless to say they were quite impressed with what they saw and the narration of my adventures there.

Take a look, you be the judge.............

DPWH chief wants ‘super region’ projects completed by April 2010
04/02/2009
MANILA, Philippines — Public works officials handling “super region" projects have been given orders to complete their projects by the end of the first quarter of next year.
Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPHWH) said Department’s thrust for 2009 is to complete the super regions projects before President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo finishes her term of office.
Arroyo is barred by law from seeking another term. Her term of office ends on June 30, 2010.
Ebdane said Arroyo’s “super regions" project are of top priority because “they serve as foundations of economic development and it can also help our government’s effort to sustain its economic gains through infrastructure development."
Ebdane directed Undersecretary Manuel Bonoan to supervise the overall implementation of P56.3 billion super region projects.

Grand Exit: IPAG’s 31st Season
Sixty thousand audiences, including two large-crowd advocacies, witnessed the 60-plus performances nationwide of the MSU-IIT Integrated Performing Arts Guild. IPAG continued to journey the islands with this season’s 4 full-feature productions and new showcases.
Even as favorites Tales From Mindanao and Tatlo Sa Isa continued to excite large audiences, good notices have come in for its landmark musical Ranaw: Isang Alamat in a 25-show run including features for the Cultural Center of the Philippines' Ruby year.
Innovative theatre perked the audiences up as IPAG translated poetry in its season cap, Tula Tugma sa Sayaw at Dula, an 11-show run in Iligan City this March. Tula is next season’s road tour offering, among others.
The Earth Hour simulcast countdown in Cagayan de Oro City last March 28 featured the IPAG. The Guild also performed in a mammoth Truthfest rally at the Rajah Solaiman Theater in Manila last year.
Presenting the IPAG this season are the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, Super Ferry, Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corporation, and the MSU-IIT.

‘RANAW: ISANG ALAMAT’
Bringing a legend back to life
By Christine Godinez-Ortega

Filed Under: Theatre, Arts (general), Lifestyle & Leisure
ILIGAN CITY, Philippines—From oral history to the stage, one of the lesser known heroes of Northern and Central Mindanao, Bato Lakungan, ancestor of present-day Iliganons claiming descent from the mama sa Wato (Royal House of Wato), takes his rightful place in the realm of legend.
Bato Lakungan is played by a Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) AB English freshman, Michael Lagura, in Steven Patrick C. Fernandez’s Cultural Center of the Philippines’ (CCP) prize-winning play, “Ranaw: Isang Alamat,” for 15 performances in a two-week run this month at the MSU-IIT mini-theater.
Fernandez’s three-act play had its first shows in 1985 and national tours in 1986-1989 under the CCP’s Outreach Program, with Tess Rances at its helm.
The new production had a cast composed of faculty and students from MSU-IIT’s College of Arts & Social Sciences, College of Science and Mathematics, School of Computer Studies, College of Education and College of Engineering.
The theater’s ceiling and stage areas were covered with black cloths with improvised wings blending with the stage walls for the actors’ exits, and quick costume changes for the play’s shifting scenes.
Complementing the spare setting were engineering students in black T-shirts looking frightfully serious playing Fernandez’s original pop musical compositions with the guitar, electric organ and native instruments like the kulintang, gongs, flutes and drums.
Colorful costumes
Rigid auditions had required actors to sing and dance as well, but, except for Integrated Performing Arts Guild veterans Melvin Pascubillo (in the roles of Maranao warlord, Datu Baringigan/Sultan sa Sulog/warrior), Amado Guinto (as warrior/chorus) and Gamallier Ricablanca (as Abdul and as narrator), the rest had to grow into their roles, especially 17-year-old Lagura, whose lack of character internalization showed through in the love scenes and during confrontations with Baringigan. His singing was hoarse and off-key at times.
The show dazzled the audience with its colorful native costumes, well-executed pangalay-based dances and contemporary choreography. The props, for example, for the voices Bato Lakungan hears under the torogan (Datu’s house)—after his arrest and after being falsely accused by his stepmother, Bai Kawasa (Leilani Monterola Fernandez) of seducing her—added to the mystery of his discovery of four magic weapons inside a baul.
These magic weapons are the baladao (three-bladed dagger); romeba (or kampilan); makagaray (sword); and the makakalmot (two-bladed dagger). It is said that the baladao is kept by one of Bato Lakungan’s descendants, the Ramiros, who, in turn are descendants of Iligan’s first barangay head, a Christianized Maranao from the mama sa Wato. The three other weapons are kept by Bato Lakungan’s and Kamayungan’s descendants who belong to the Maranao, Maguindanao, Higaunon and Iliganon groups.
When the play was written in 1983, Fernandez aimed to show the affinity of these various groups but further research is needed to separate fact from fiction. In the absence of written records, researchers are aware of persons who know the story of Bato Lakungan and salsilas (genealogies). The reality is that most families with salsilas refuse access to these given their maratabat (pride), their putting a premium on wealth and prestige and their unchanging attitudes toward the other groups mentioned.
Neatly choreographed
The 80-minute play, from the original’s 120-minute run, was a treat for first-timers, mostly students from different parts of Mindanao. Given the mini-theatre’s limited space, the actors mingled frequently with the audience throughout the play.
Its neatly-choreographed war scenes, the vigorous movements where warriors (Kenn Erwin Velasquez, Cyril Cabello and Gerard Ricablanca) engaged in slow-motion sword fights, were a joy to watch—a credit to the long hours of training the actors went through.
Among the new players, standouts were Ricablanca’s powerful singing voice as narrator, creating the balance between action and pure narrative; the natural singing, dancing and acting of Elaine Macamay (Bai sa Toros); Dianne Clemente (as Mahayag) and Juvy Pelos (alternate to Kamayungan); and Jexxon Canazares’ realistic portrayal as the Higaunon Datu Landa.
It is to Fernandez’s credit that he was able to recreate a hero’s exploits, otherwise forgotten or confined to some salsilas, and highlight the fact that a hero during pre-colonial times understood the meaning of unity in diversity.
When the walls of tribalism prevent groups from living in peace and harmony, the image of this Datu lasts longer in our minds.

Alingatong April 7th, 2009, 02:22 PM The Holy Week marks the holiest week of the entire year.

Alingatong April 7th, 2009, 03:19 PM PhilHealth Iligan announces increase in benefit ceilings
by Lorry V. Gabule
Iligan City (7 April) -- Members of the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth) will enjoy increased subsidies for hospitalization fees and professional charges of physicians for confinements starting May 1 this year.
Christine Mae M. Garcia-Magno, Chief Social Insurance Officer, PhilHealth Iligan City/Lanao del Norte, said the expected 35% inpatient care benefit is the first in seven years since its last upward benefit increase in 2002.
While the increase in allowances for hospital room and board fees is moderate, increasing in some of the benefit items are more than 100 percent, as in the case of drugs and medicines for Case Type B illnesses in Primary hospitals, where an increase of about 260% is demonstrated from P2,500.00 to P9,000.00 per single period of confinement.
Magno further said, under the new inpatient package, allowances for x-ray and other laboratory exams grew by as much as 76%, while maximum benefit amounts for the professional fees of accredited physicians rose by as much as 136% for general practitioners and specialist combined.
These benefits were increased in varying degrees across all case types (or illness types) as applicable, in participating tertiary, secondary and primary hospitals nationwide.
The anaesthesiologist and surgeon’s fees were also increased to amounts that are more meaningful to those who can avail based on PhilHealth’s recently-approved tiered payments for professional fees and the revised valuations for certain surgical and medical procedures.
PhilHealth’s increase in benefit ceilings comes without any increase in premium contributions, so as not to burden its members especially now that the country is feeling the pinch of the ongoing global economic crisis, Magno stressed.
PhilHealth has called on its 1,500-strong partner hospitals to further improve their services and refrain from unnecessary jacking up their fees so that PhilHealth members may enjoy their benefits. (PIA-Lanao del Norte)

we'll hope super 5 transport company will serve iligan-valencia-davao route in the future as soon as the iligan-bukidnon road project is finished! :)
kuspawix April 8th, 2009, 04:14 AM Mindanao Areas of Intra-regional and Interregional Cooperation/Complementation
i. Bukidnon-Davao Development Area
The completion of Bukidnon-Davao Road provides opportunity for tourism and recreation center development in the area along the boundary. The areas along this route is also suited to high value temperate crops agriculture. The border location requires that critical services requirement be looked into.
ii. Panguil Bay Development Area
The provinces of Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga del Norte share the bay’s marine resources. These LGUs shall be encouraged to jointly formulate a comprehensive development plan for the bay’s resources including its major tributaries. The major stakeholders in this area could look at possibilities of joint conservation and protection schemes, as well as cost-sharing and sharing of revenues.
iii. The Murciellagos Bay Area
Conservation and development of Murciellagos Bay should be jointly considered by the provinces of Misamis Occidental (municipalities of Baliangao and Sapang Dalaga) and Zamboanga del Norte (municipality of Rizal).
iv. Cagayan de Oro-Iligan-Cebu Industrial and Trade Triangle
Supportive of the region’s vision, the strategies for Cagayan de Oro and Iligan shall include a continuing promotion of partnership with the already well established industrial and trading center of Cebu. Areas of collaboration will be on investments and trade, especially among the private sectors in these cities. One objective would be to avoid undue competition, especially in
the allocation of resources. The three cities together shall take advantage of their huge combined industrial capital to leverage their competitiveness in the world market.
v. Iligan-Lanao del Norte-Lanao del Sur Cultural Triangle (IlaNorSur Triangle)
The region shall work towards the establishment of a special growth center that will showcase the cultural diversity in the communities within the Iligan-Lanao del Norte-Lanao del Sur triangle. The cultural mix among Christians, Muslims and indigenous tribes in these areas shall be turned
into a strong foundation for forging the continued development of the current Cagayan-Iligan Corridor (CIC) Industrial Growth Area.
vi. Iligan-Bukidnon Agriculture Growth Corridor
The addition of Lanao del Norte and Iligan, has vastly enhanced the region’s agricultural resources. Linking these areas with Bukidnon, the agricultural stronghold of the region, will stimulate more efficient post-harvest processing and trade within the region.

The province of Lanao del Norte, of which Iligan is the capital, lies in the northern part of Mindanao, where the Zamboanga Peninsula joins with the mainland of Mindanao between Yllana and Iligan Bays.
The two Lanaos formed just one province before, and as such was home to the Maranaos, a native tribe of the region, a fierce and proud people who resisted colonization by the Spaniards and later by the Americans. The old province of Lanao was never really subjugated. The Maranaos continued to wage their bloody wars of resistance. Fortresses Iligan today are mute relics of those bloody encounters. In 1913 they were finally subdued by the Americans. In 1914 the province of Lanao was formally organized.
With new stability in the region, migrants from islands north of Mindanao poured in the northern part of the province. Because of the large numbers of Christian migrants that settled there, as Muslims also settled in the south, the division of Lanao into two provinces was deemed necessary. This division finally took place in 1959, and since then Lanao del Norte has become more Christian, while Lanao del Sur has become more Muslim.
Iligan City today is a boom town, with more migrants coming in. Recent years have seen a sprouting of stores, streets and schools. This growth is attributed to the power generated by the Agus River which begins at Lake Lanao, traverses Lanao del Norte, and provides electric power for the province. Heavy-powered industries have made Iligan their home base, industries such as steel plants, fertilizer plants, ferro-alloy plants, flour mills and cement plants.
Ecclesiastically, all of Mindanao and Sulu came under the jurisdiction of the Diocese of Cebu during the Spanish era. When the Diocese of Zamboanga was created in 1910, it had jurisdiction over the whole of Mindanao. In 1933 the Diocese of Cagayan de Oro was separated from that of Zamboanga and got jurisdiction over Surigao, both Misamises, Bukidnon, and part of the old Lanao, presumably the northern part nearer to it. In 1971, Iligan became a prelature nullius and suffragan of the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro.
The Prelature of Iligan was created on February 17, 1971, with the late Bishop Bienvenido S. Tudtud as the first Prelate Ordinary. In November of 1982, Iligan was elevated to a diocese, suffragan first to the Archdiocese of Cagayan de Oro and later to the Archdiocese of Ozamiz. Bishop Fernando R. Capalla was named first Bishop of the Diocese of Iligan. This year, 1995, Monsignor Emilio L. Bataclan became the second bishop of the diocese.
For the church in Iligan it has been a slow process of development considering the existing situation of Christians and Muslims co-existing in the area. In its first stage of development, the church in Iligan was more concerned with a genuine dialogue between the faiths.
The second stage was the establishment of Basic Ecclesial Communities to bring evangelization down to grass roots level, in line with the spirit behind the Second Plenary Council of the Philippines (PCP-II).
As the Diocese of Iligan celebrates its 25th anniversary in 1996, a diocesan pastoral conference is being planned to coincide with the festivities. New strategies and methods will be worked out and defined to answer new social, economic and religious issues facing the diocese at the present time.
There are now 18 parishes in the diocese, served by 24 diocesan and 11 religious priests, assisted by 4 religious brothers and 54 religious sisters. The diocese covers a land area of 3,092 square kilometers with a population of 625,548 of which 78 per cent are Catholics.
The Diocese of Iligan comprises Iligan City and part of the province of Lanao del Norte. Its titular patron is St. Michael, the Archangel whose feast is celebrated September 29.
Among its Catholic institutions are a major seminar, 12 kindergarten schools, 6 elementary schools, 13 high schools and 1 college.
Among its private associations are the Knights of Columbus, Couples for Christ, Apostleship of Prayer, Christian Family Movement, Catholic Women's League, and the Brotherhood of Christian Businessmen of the Philippines.

tonight April 8th, 2009, 11:10 AM Local disaster councils assess rehab efforts in Lanao Norte (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=r10&y=&mo=&fi=p090407.htm&no=34)
PIA
Tubod, Lanao del Norte -- A joint technical meeting of the Regional and Provincial Disaster Coordinating Councils was conducted at the Macapagal Training Center, Tubod town, Lanao del Norte province to assess the accomplishments and gains in the rehabilitation efforts in the province.
The on-going rehabilitation of the province is being implemented by national line agencies, regional and provincial government units complemented by both international and local humanitarian organizations.
"The information gathered in this meeting will point out where we are in rehabilitating Lanao del Norte and provide a road map towards our goal", said Director Carmelito Lupo of the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) and Head of the Technical Working Group.
The on-going rehabilitation effort is the third phase in the restoration of normalcy in the province.
Right after the tragic attacks in the towns of Kauswagan and Kolambugan last year, relief operations were immediately launched then followed by the early recovery process, which was the second phase.
"The triangle approach is being used to address the needs of those affected - we have the national government with its line agencies, the local government units represented by the municipal and provincial officials; and the NGO's (Non-Governmental Organizations) completing the triangle", Lupo said.
The technical meeting also saw a strong representation from the NGO's and humanitarian service organizations operating in the province.
Present in the meeting were representatives from organizations such as Pakigdait Alang sa Pag-amoma sa Kalinaw, Inc. (Pakigdait Inc.), Ecosystems Work for Essential Benefits, Inc. (EcoWEB), Community and Family Services International (CFSI), Mindanao Development Council (MEDCo) and Act for Peace.
"There is a strong collaboration between the provincial government and the NGO's that are conducting humanitarian interventions here in Lanao del Norte", remarked Xarifa Sanguila of Pakigdait, Inc.
In an update given by the Provincial Agriculturist Office, communal gardens planted last October are now starting to be harvested and providing alternative income to residents in the conflict-affected areas.

The Second Station:
Jesus Carries His Cross
How could any human impose such a burden upon Your torn and bleeding body, Lord Jesus? Each movement of the cross drove the thorns deeper into Your Head. How did You keep the hatred from welling up in Your Heart? How did the injustice of it all not ruffle your peace? The Father's Will was hard on You - Why do I complain when it is hard on me?
I see injustice and am frustrated and when my plans to alleviate it seems futile, I despair. When I see those burdened with poverty suffer ever more and cross is added to cross my heart is far from serene. I utterly fail to see the dignity of the cross as it is carried with love. I would so much rather be without it.
My worldly concept is that suffering, like food, should be shared equally. How ridiculous I am, dear Lord. Just as we do not all need the same amount of material food, neither do we need the same amount of spiritual food and that is what the cross is in my life, isn't it - spiritual food proportional to my needs.
Amen

Alingatong April 10th, 2009, 12:27 PM Guys...what are the best place to visit in Iligan and how long is the trip from CdeO?
Iligan is about 1.1/2-hour bus ride from CdeO.
Since Iligan is known as a city of waterfalls, don't miss Maria Cristina Falls inside NPC Natures Park. If you have enough time, you may visit the equally beautiful falls - Tinago and Mimbalot. All falls mentioned are just a ride away from the city proper.
Another point of interest in Iligan is the popular Timoga Spring Pools. :)

Is parking not a problem in Iligan....kasi medyo state of shock pa ako sa mga jeepney drivers ng CdeO at ang hirap mag park downtown....kaya sa taas lang ko palagi....
how about accommodations?....ok ba?
Alingatong April 10th, 2009, 12:40 PM Space availability for parking depends on the place/establishment you're visiting. Like if you have business transaction within the vicinity of the public plaza where most banks are located, parking is not a problem. If you want to go shopping, parking areas are provided by the mall/Store owners. Same with hotels, pension houses and inns.
While in Iligan, you may consider Morvies Suites located along Tibanga Hi-way for accommodation. It's newly opened and is very accessible.

kuspawix April 13th, 2009, 03:41 PM New study on proposed Mindanao railway system to be completed within the year (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW041309/content.php?id=053)
DAVAO CITY — A new study on the strategic railway development for Mindanao is expected to be completed before the end of this year, a ranking official of the Department of Transportation and Communication (DoTC) said last week.
Guiling A. Mamondiong, undersecretary for railways, said the study component includes full-scale feasibility studies for the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan corridor; a pre-feasibility study for the Cagayan de Oro-Davao-General Santos City line; and technical assessment of the Iligan City-Zamboanga City line.
"The duration of the study will be 10 months," he said in an interview.
The initial plan of the Transportation agency was to connect Davao City, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Zamboanga City, Cotabato City, Marawi, Pagadian, and Dipolog via the railway system.
While Mr. Mamondiong did not cite figures, he had estimated in June last year that the project will cost between $800 million-$1 billion, compared to the $700-million estimate floated when it was first proposed in the Ramos administration.
The government had already approached Poland, Saudi Arabia and Spain for development assistance, he had said.
President Gloria M. Arroyo in June of last year formed the Mindanao Railways Project Policy and Coordinating Committee, designating Transportation Secretary Leandro R. Mendoza, Public Works Sec. Hermogenes E. Ebdane, Jr. and Budget Sec. Rolando G. Andaya, Jr. as members. House Speaker Prospero C. Nograles (Davao City, 1st District) was named adviser.
The planned railway consists of a criss-crossing network of lines linking Cagayan de Oro to Iligan, Iligan to Zamboanga City, and Cagayan de Oro to Agusan and Surigao, as well as extensions to Davao and General Santos cities. The first phase of the project consists of a 120 kilometer stretch of railway that will pass through the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan industrial corridor.
Mr. Mamondiong said the railway project is not the only big-ticket transportation development for Mindanao this year.
He noted that the island will get a lion’s share of the DoTC’s transport investment program for 2009. Mindanao, he said, has been allocated P2.791 billion or 40.70% of the department’s total budget for this program, against P2.429 billion for Luzon (35.43%) and P1.637 billion for Visayas (23.87%).
Among the ongoing projects, he said, are
* the Laguindingan Airport development project in Misamis Oriental with a budget of P7.853 billion and scheduled to be completed by January 2012;
* the P478.05-million Dipolog Airport development project which is set to finish by this October; and
* the P215.13-million Ozamiz Airport development project which should be completed this July.
Butuan airport is also now undergoing a P700-million makeover. Upgrading work on this facility includes extension and widening of the runway, rehabilitation of the terminal building and improvement of navigation facilities. The target completion of the project has been set for this December.
Mr. Mamondiong said the asphalt overlay of runway of the Cotabato Airport in Awang, Maguindanao, which was allocated a P600-million budget, has already been completed, while bidding for the rehabilitation of the terminal building was opened last month.
Moreover, development of Zamboanga and Pagadian airports, with respective funding costs of P428.5 million and P379.46 million, respectively should be completed this year, said Mr. Mamondiong. — Joel B. Escovilla

Anyway... this could be the possible site of Linamon International Airport

infact, its not a problem to clear rugged terrains in that area because engineers have the resort on solving that kind of problem. not only in linamon but anywhere...

iligan-bukidnon road was one considered as gatasan sa mga politiko who pushes the project into reality..2 decades again, this road is still not passable..before, the project has two proposals, one is to pass the present road going to rogongon, and the other one is to make another road aside from the existing road..the proponent of the 2nd was to pass the properties of the politicians..:lol:..business?..
