dark_knight_detectve April 14th, 2009, 03:07 PM Iligan celebrates as MSU-IIT alumna places second in Bar exams (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090414.htm&no=67)
By Kimberly Joyce Veloso
Iligan City (14 April) -- Observers couldn't help but notice: the difference in the scores of the first and second placers in the 2008 bar exams, whose results were released Friday night, was an itsy bitsy 0.05%.
So after learning who the topnotcher was (Judy Lardizabal of San Sebastian, with 85.70%), the next question by bar watchers was, naturally, who's Mylene Amerol-Macumbal?
That she's a Maranao who reviewed for the bar while fasting during the Ramadan is the most interesting anecdote that Newsbreak gathered from an interview with her. Mylene, however, is much more than that. It seems that, all her life, she has been prepared to achieve the feat, and that "It will be an accident if she fails the bar," as one of her law professors says.
Atty. Mylene Amerol-Macumbal
Everything seems to come or happen in two's in Mylene's life. She finished BS Accountancy and later Law both at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT). She finished both courses magna cum laude. She ranked well in the licensure exams for both professions—18th in the 2002 exams for certified public accountants, and 2nd in the 2008 bar exams. She's married to another lawyer, Municipal Trial Court Judge Arassad Macumbal in Bacolod, Lanao del Norte.
In fact, if her father—the late Bureau of Internal Revenue Regional Director Tommy Amerol—had finished his law studies, Mylene would have only been the second accountant-lawyer in the family.
The inspiration to become a lawyer came from her father. Mylene, the only girl among four children, says her father was in law school, but the demands of his work as BIR examiner (he was assigned in San Pablo City in Laguna, where Mylene was born) and raising a family prevented him from pursuing the course further. Mylene, meanwhile, was reading her father's law books as early as age 10.
So when the family heard the good news of her placing second in the bar exams around 8:30 p.m. last April 3—her husband was shouting for joy—Mylene missed her father. "I wished he was here to celebrate with us."
Her mother, businesswoman Nora Ibrahim, felt the same. She couldn't describe the happiness she felt for Mylene, but imagined that her husband would have been very proud of their daughter.
Now that she practically topped the bar exams, Mylene is more contented than regretful.
"I'm just happy I made it. I wasn't expecting [to be in the top ten], but nangandoy ko (I aspired for it)," she shares with Newsbreak. Out of the 6,364 who took the bar last year, only 1,310 (or 20.58%) passed.
Mylene says her undergraduate studies in accountancy was her best preparation for one of the toughest subjects in the bar exam—taxation. "You cannot cram everything you learned in just six months [of review]," she explains.
Although she constantly updated herself with the latest cases and laws and made a systematic schedule of her review, but she still feared that she wasn't prepared enough. Add to that the fact that Ramadan, the month-long fasting observed by the Islamic faithful once a year, fell within the period of Mylene's reviews for the bar exams.
Mylene, a devout Muslim, says the hunger she felt while fasting somehow took its toll on her, but that she coped by praying to Allah.
"You have to surrender yourself to His will," she says. "You need to remember the will of Allah. If it is not meant for you, then it will never be yours."
Mylene's mentors in the College of Law and the College of Business Administration and Accountancy at MSU-IIT were very confident that she would succeed.
"Maayo jud na siya (She is very skillful). It will be an accident if she fails the bar. I was 99 percent certain she would pass. She writes well and has a good analytical mind," Attorney Rejoice Subejano, one of Mylene's law professors, says.
"She is not only smart, but she is also diligent. When I call her to recite, she can always answer the question. She is also always at the top of the class," says Prof. Jahara D. Ibrahim, her college instructor for the taxation course.
"She is so intelligent, but she is very humble. I expected her to pass the bar easily; I knew she would make it to the top 10," relates Prof. Griselda Z. Albao, her fellow faculty member at the Department of Accountancy in CBAA. She says Macumbal manages her time well and is a favorite among students. Macumbal worked as an instructor for two years before going full-time in law school.
Mylene was the class valedictorian when she graduated from the College of Law. She was also editor in chief of Nexus, the school paper of the College of Law, and an active officer of the student government during her college days.
Mylene's accomplishment in the bar exams is a first for the Iligan extension of the MSU College of Law. In 1997, Allan Exclamador, ranked ninth place in the bar exams. He came from the main MSU campus in Marawi City.
Mylene is pleased with her accomplishment, and she wants to believe it has proven two things: that MSU-ans can do it, and that the Bangsamoros are just as capable as anyone else.
"It's a prestigious profession, especially among Maranaos and Muslims. It may entail a lot of responsibilities, but it will help many people. Also, it brings respect and a sense of pride to the family," she says. (Newsbreak/AIITAFI) [top]

(mta)

RML April 14th, 2009, 06:49 PM Is parking not a problem in Iligan....kasi medyo state of shock pa ako sa mga jeepney drivers ng CdeO at ang hirap mag park downtown....kaya sa taas lang ko palagi....
lol
Pre, CdO is notorious when it comes to parking suitability. Hindi lang yan -- madumi, maalikabok, maingay, ma-tao at mainit!
The malls though have ample parking spaces. So, let's give them credit for that.

RML April 14th, 2009, 07:07 PM Mas gusto ko sana sa Iligan ilagay ang airport kaso konti lang flat area sa city natin. Pwede kaya magreclaim ?
But there's no need to relocate the local airport as building a new one would be insanely costly --billions of pesos are needed to build an airport. I'd say, the old, existing one can be renovated to cater bigger planes. the road from baloi (going) to iligan only needs a little maintenance. (those little lubak-lubak on the way can be fixed.) and, security can be tightened a bit. since the airport houses military planes too, security is the easiest to address amongst the possible problems to occur on this project.
laguindiangan is okay. but it's too far from iligan.

Parang ang racist naman pakinggan nito. :D
anyway, she's the sister-in-law of a dear friend of mine, Atty. AG Alonto, who's now a city fiscal of iligan and a part-time instructor of MSU law school.
the 2nd-placer comes from a decent maranao family. they're well-off and highly educated.
I would say that their family is more "christianized" (a term I use to denote well-mannered, socially aware, highly educated individuals) than they're more "maranaos" or whatever they wanna call it.
maybe she could be a great ambassadress to her fellow maranaos in helping them to develop a culture (and religion) of peace, love and understanding amongst races and different religious factions. she can channel her talent and abilities to uplift the educational standard and awareness of her fellow maranaos, as a lot of them are really ignorant and trouble-loving people.
if she can do that, then the more my admiration for her will grow. she might even be a strong candidate for the ten most outstanding young men/women of the philippines, an award given to exceptional filipinos whose contributions they make benefit the society as a whole. http://www.toym.org/

Why blame the President? If Gloria is tasked to run and develop Iligan herself, then why elect local officials and representatives? It seems that everytime may kapalpakan sa local government, presidente palagi ang bini-blame. If you compare Iligan with other cities, mas malaki ang income ng Iligan plus mas maraming projects ang ibinigay ng national government para dito pero anong nangyayari? Look at Tagum, Dapitan, Pagadian, etc. Umuunlad sa sariling paa dahil sa mga magagaling na officials nila. Di ba dapat trabaho ng local officials natin na gamitin at i-implement ng wasto ang mga perang yan? Try to look back during the glorious days of Iligan. Mas maunlad pa ang Iligan noon compared to let's say CdeO. Nandoon na tayo pero anong nangyari? What do you think was the very reason why Iligan is left behind now?

It would certainly be great if I could take a flight from Manila right into the existing airport near Iligan. Any time I have looked into this however I have been cautioned to never ever take a flight to this airport in its present condition do to navigational difficulties encountered in past times when the airport was partially operational. Sounds like it would be a good idea to have a feasability study done to see what would be necessary to update the airport to present day standards to make it useful once more. It is a shame to have a facility like that unused and sitting idle.

Its good to know about linamon.. but i dont think it will materialize since Laguindingan is currently shaping up for U/C as International airport that caters also entire NorMin. Renovate nalang nila ang Maria Christina Airport... :)
you know guys, prior to the proposed Laguindingan Airport under the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor (CIC), the clearing of the airport project in Bosque, Linamon was already stopped and was not under the flagship projects of the later CIC.. CIC was started during the Ramos Administration, meaning, that airport in Linamon is not a priority project during the Ramos Admin since the Laguindingan airport was given emphasis during that time..

Iligan City...............Simply Amazing !
Hello bob! What's up?
From what I've gathered, the existing Balo-i airport's runway lacks the needed length to run bigger planes. The past tragic events were, by and large, caused by its undersized runway.
If Iligan's representative to the House of Congress was only aggressive... Iligan would already have its own airport.
Much of Iligan's very slow progress now was caused by its weak past Congressmen and city administrators.
BTW, Iligan is quite privilege having you as one of its strongest supporters. You've helped a lot to this city; you have no idea how valuable your efforts and enthusiasm for Iligan are. As a native Iliganon, I cannot thank you enough. God blesses you! :)

just wanted to ask here..who is this bob anyway? and in what way did he help iligan? all i can see of him is eating jollibee burgers...it seems to me that he helped market jollibee instead of iligan....if he is that amazed to our place, he should let his friends come here...not just to go to jollibee new york or las vegas..

I know Bob can answer your question, but maybe you can also do a simple search and find out what Bob has done for Iligan, especially the scholars he has supported.
It will save you embarrassment.
Alingatong April 15th, 2009, 02:20 PM And the first real Jollibee experience of Bob was in Iligan. He has also shared his blessings to the less fortunate Iliganons in times of hardship. All for his love of Iligan. The Chancellor of MSU-IIT and the City Mayor will tell you more of Bob's generosity.

A few years ago I had never heard of Iligan, or Mindanao and all I knew about The Philippines was that it is out there somewhere in the Pacific beyond Hawaii.
One night while websurfing, seemingly from out of nowhere an address from " Iligan City 9200 Philippines " appears on my screen. The name and post code seemed interesting so I decided to do a little websurfing to see where and what it was. Some of the first images of Iligan I remember seeing were a group of people eating and having what appeared to be a lot of fun under a pavilion at a large swimming pool. The group that posted those images is long gone now but I will never forget those pics. I continued websurfing Iligan City and after hundreds of hours, thousands of images, text and video about Iligan City by then it had become a place in my imagination. Not that it is an imaginary city, but something I could imagine myself being in some of the images I had seen of it. And yes, that included imagining sitting in the first Jollibee I had ever seen , Jollibee Tibanga. That one picture actually made the difference in me visiting Iligan City or not !
The more I learned about Iligan City, the more I wanted to go there and see it all for myself and be in many of the places the pictures I had seen of it were taken. Many of those pics originated right here on SSC-Iligan.
I then began looking into things I would need to know to go to Iligan City since I had never been in that part of the world before or any other place outside of the USA that had a Tropical Climate.
One of the first hurdles I encountered was to find out that Americans are advised by our own government not to go anywhere near Iligan City or for that matter The Philippines in its entirety ! ( see link )
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/tw/tw_2190.html
This warning has been posted for years and is regularly updated. This seemed quite a disapointment to me. Over a period of two years I was able to assemble my own Entourage and Security made up of some of the finest Iliganons available to me.
I then was advised that I should see a " Travel Doctor " for vaccinations for the prevention of Tropical Diseases, infections etc. not found in my part of the world. While at the Doctors office I was given a folder filled with many kind of health precautions specifically referenced to Tropical Climates and some particular to The Philippines. There are various bacteria, organisms, parasites, and just plain germs there that those from other parts of the world have never been exposed to. For those that live there they have built up an immunity towards many of these things but for someone being exposed to some of these things for the first time can make a person quite Ill to the point of possibly requiring hospitalization. Many of these travel health precautions are issued to travelers to insure a safe and fun vacation and not having to sight see from a hospital bed !
Here are some links for further information :
http://wwwn.cdc.gov/travel/destinationPhilippines.aspx#notices
http://www.mdtravelhealth.com/destinations/asia/philippines.php
Don't those food precautions make you wonder if you will have to bring an extra suitcase full of food from home ? Don't eat this, Don't drink that, No Ice Cream, No Cheese, . What kind of fun can you have if you can't eat or drink anything ? It was either bring my own or find some kind of " Fail Safe " way of obtaining a variety of food to live on for a couple of weeks !
Buzzed by " The Bee ". The very first picture I saw of Jollibee on Tibanga Highway in Iligan City really caught my attention. A Philipine interpertation of an American Fast Food eatery ! Over a period of months I reasearched the parent Corporation, it' subsidaries, the CEO and other factors I considered worthwhile. Learning that the founder of Jollibee had studied the fast food business in the USA prior to starting Jollibee as a chain or franchise operation, learning of the high reputation of Jollibee in The Philippines and the number of them, I knew that in all probablility Jollibee not only met the competition of foriegn fast food Giants like McDonalds, Pizza Hut etc Jollibee would not only meet the competition but Beat them, and this is still my opinion today. I had found my " Fail Safe " source of food in The Philippines !
I never recall having the desire to go somewhere that met with such negativity and even from Filipinos at my job here in the USA. Other places in The Philippines, maybe, but Iligan City ? Mindanao ? I found it interesting however that many of these negative comments came out of the mouths of those that had never been there themselves , you figure that one out !
Amoung many websites having information about Iligan City and Mindanao, there are a group of websites run by an American named Bob Martin that has lived in Davao for many years and he has traveled " ALL " over the island. He was one of the very few that gave me the " Thumbs Up " about going to Iligan as a first time visitor and I found that most encouraging. Coming from a fellow American there was little space for any translation error.
Things were falling into place nicely, I had my Air tickets, I made Hotel reservations and everything looked like it was a " GO " I had originally planned on being in Iligan for the first time in December. Sudden and unforseen changes at my job caused me to have to cancel this first visit for a few months. As it ended up it was for the better as just before the time I would have arrived Iligan City had been subjected to a massive Flood placing the city in a state of Calamity.
I was thankful that my visit had been put off and that I was not involved in being in the flood ravaged city. I viewed daily videos and pics of this calamity on SSC , Youtube and other sources. Although I was glad I was not there at that time, I felt saddened seeing all the victems loosing everything at what should have been such a festive time of the year. When I saw pics of emergency bags of rice being given out from the recources of the Iligan City Calamity Fund I felt there must be something I could do even though I was half way around the world from Iligan City. Where could I send something that would help, How could I do something ? I felt so sorry for all of those people.

I had read many things on the internet about Mayor Lawrence LL Cruz while websurfing and researching Iligan City for the prior two years. Knowing of no where else to send a donation to the Iligan City Calimity Fund, I sent a donation ( easily convertable to local currency ) Directly to Mayor Cruz at the address listed for his office at City Hall. In a letter of explanation of my donation to the Iligan City Calamity Fund , I also explained on just how I happened to come across Iligan City ( or did it come across me , or both ) and that I was monitoring the situation there. A few weeks later I recieved a letter of thanks ( suitable for framing ) from Mayor Cruz who was so surprised that someone from so far away who had never been to Iligan City had come forth with such a generous and kind gesture in their time of need. Mayor Cruz invited me to Iligan City and to meet with him at his office when I was there.

Several months later the time had come once again for me to visit Iligan City and this time it really happened. I boarded a 747 in New York City for what was to be a 22 hour flight, with 3 stopovers and plane changes, and if you add the time zones and the international date line it would be two days on the calandar before I arrived in Iligan City. The longest journey I had ever made to see a place that had been in my imagination for the previous two years !
WOuld I ever get there ? Would my previously arranged for Entourage and Security be waiting for me at Lumbia Airport when I arrived ? Would I get to the Hotel and best of all would I get to Jollibee Tibanga ?
Click on this link to find out !

In answer to your question about why you see what you may feel are too many pictures of me eating Hamburgers at Jollibee, you must realize where you are Jollibee is an everyday thing. For me it was something I had never known about before and we don't have them where I live ( yet hehehe ) . It also reassured me that if I visited Iligan City there would be a place with Fun and Familiar food with little chance of being exposed or overexposed to unknown elements that could cause me to become ill as outlined in the travel precautions I had received here. Jollibee gave me the freedom to come to Iligan without having to worry about food or bringing my own. Jollibee Tibanga also allowed me to be " In A Picture " that I had sen two years earlier of a place half a world away. If you have never experienced something like this and the feeling that it can create, I hope you have a similar thing happen to you someday.
Immediately after checking in at Elena Towers you would have thought I would have wanted to rest, but instead I almost ran up the street with my Entourage and Security in tow, to get to Jollibee. That is how exciting all of this was for me. Two years of planning, Two years of anticipation. And wouldn't you know it, the room I had at the hoter when I looked out the window, that big elevated Jollibee Sign was looking straight at me ! It could not have been much better than that !

cant_tnac April 16th, 2009, 02:42 AM ^^Sir Bob, you made me love Iligan more. I don't really read lengthy posts here except for the one posted by Sir Bob. For it is so heart-lifting that someone coming from the other side of the globe would have that great experience in our city. How I wish more Sir Bobs will come over and feel what Sir Bob felt.
BobNewYorkUSA April 16th, 2009, 03:15 AM just wanted to ask here..who is this bob anyway? and in what way did he help iligan? all i can see of him is eating jollibee burgers...it seems to me that he helped market jollibee instead of iligan....if he is that amazed to our place, he should let his friends come here...not just to go to jollibee new york or las vegas..
Upon my return home from my first visit to Iligan with first hand knowledge and esperience of being there, I knew many of the negative things I had been cautioned about in visiting there were so far from the truth, even the negative things some of the Filipino's at my job ( who had never even been to Iligan ) were quite surprised how I became so enthusiastic about haveing visited Iligan City. By those who were really in the know such as fellow AMerican Bob Martin in Davao who operates several websites promoting Mindanao to the rest of the world, had told me I should not have any problem visiting Iligan CIty and he was correct !
Obviously, in just about any part of the world there are places which are " tourist Friendly " and there are other parts that should be avoided by visitors, guests and tourists. This applies to Mindanao just as it would apply to London, New York City, Las Vegas, Edinburgh and many of the other places in the world I have been to.
Using multiple PC's on broadband internet connections I can virtually visit Iligan City everyday including here on SSC. When an incedent happened in Iligan City last August, I knew about it in less than 15 seconds after the first part of said incident happened ! Thats even faster than I may have found out if I had been right there in Iligan at the time. I immediately began following many sources of information for minute by minute updates including those right here on SSC-Iligan along with the Pics.
A few days later things on Mindanao escalated on other parts of the Island. When people of a certain other part of Mindanao felt so threatened, they had to leave their homes and everything they owned behind, they boarded boats, rafts or just about anything else that would float and floated themselves around the coastline seeking safety and refuge in Iligan City, where they were welcomed. Evacuation centers were immediately established for about 10,000 evacuees where they were fed and taken care of as best as possibility. Having Ten Thousand unexpected " visitors " for breakfast lunch and dinner once again activated the " Iligan City Calamity Fund " even though there was no calamity in Iligan. After seeing pictures ( many right here on SSC-Iligan ) and video posted by Iliganons on Youtube along with commercial press reports, I knew there was at least something I could do and I had a proven formula for how to do this. Can you imagine the costs involved in even providing 10,000 cups of coffee or 10,000 bottles of water ? Even the disposal of those containers alone is a big burden. Once again I made a donation sent through the office of Mayor Cruz to the Iligan City Calamity Fund. I also posted the way I found how to do this right here on Iligan-SSC with the comment for others in all parts of the world that read this website that " we are not helpless to offer assistance in this situation, there are things we can do no matter where in the world we are " > It is not always the amount of a donation but the thought and reasoning behind it that can really make a difference.
I think this event testifies to the Safety of Iligan CIty. Can 10.000 refugees be wrong ? When they felt thy had to abandon their homes and everything they owned for their own safety, where did they go ? Iligan City of course ! It is this event and others that I now can use as an example if I am asked " Is Iligan City really safe ? " Can 10,000 people be wrong ?

you are more than a Iliganon..
for those who didn't know @Bob, perhaps he may look as alienating but for us who know him, especially me who just recently knew him, he is more like an Iliganon. As I was lurking in this thread before, his admiration of Iligan and Jollibee is already heartwarming to me as I thought how would an American love so much our place as he has only come here once or twice and that there are much better places from the country where he comes from. Another thing, as I was able to read more and more articles especially from MSU IIT and Iligan City Government websites, I have learned that @Bob has contributed to Iligan more than myself as a genuine constituent of this place. I think even without those contributions, @Bob's admiration of Iligan and Jollibee has enabled me to love Iligan more.
Aren't you happy with that? Somebody, from the eyes of a first world countryman has a fascination of our city? Isn't that already a contribution? And besides, @Bob did not visit this thread comparing places to Iligan, he didn't bash our place like some out there who has an egotistic approach coz his place is better than ours. He is here to support us locals to love and contribute to our city more than we used to.
With this kind of questioning @Bob's contributions, I am even more than embarrassed too. Why? It's because it is not the kind of hospitality that we Filipinos have known for. Much more, it's kind of an embarrassing treatment that you can give to somebody who has endless help to Iligan. :ohno:

BobNewYorkUSA April 16th, 2009, 08:08 PM just wanted to ask here..who is this bob anyway? and in what way did he help iligan? all i can see of him is eating jollibee burgers...it seems to me that he helped market jollibee instead of iligan....if he is that amazed to our place, he should let his friends come here...not just to go to jollibee new york or las vegas..
After my first arrival in Iligan City I began meeting many people and enjoying conversation with them. Many of them expressed how impressed they were with the amount of knowledge I had about thier city for a first time visitor. At times I even impressed myself. Many of the things I had only seen in images on an internet screen over the previous two years were easily recognised and although I was in a part of the world I had never experienced before I never once felt like a stranger. Even on the way into Iligan City I recognised many things even though it was raining and as the sun was going down. When I first entered Jollibee it felt as though I was returning to a place I had been to many times before. That same first evening I visited Club Seven and was greeted at the entrance by one of the staff with a smile and a handshake, no language difference or translation in a greeting like that. In fact, every time I went to CLub Seven I was welcomed in the same familiar way.
When I went to City Hall to meet Mayor Cruz, I also enjoyed a grand tour of the entire city hall complex with and employee that worked in the mayors office as a tour guide willing to show me anything and everything I wanted to see.
I visited the Iligan City Department of Tourism and had a nice chat with those that worked there. They were quite amazed when I informed them of how I had learned about Iligan City and that I had acquired so much information about it. Having an impression that the Department of Tourism may not have been aware of how much information had been put on so many internet website by individaul Iliganons I informed them of websites I regularly frequent having information on Iligan, including Skyscrapercity.COm - Iligan, Mindanao.Com and of it's American webmaster who promotes all of Mindanao to the rest of the world, Various Youtube.com channels dedicated to Iligan City and also some of the Philippine commercial press websites I frequent almost daily.

A situation occoured on I believe what was my third night in Iligan where I really had to draw on my knowledge of Iligan and the humdred of images I had previously seen of it. About one year before I actually arrived in Iligan, I was looking at internet pics, some of which were right here on SSC-Iligan. I had a radio playing in the background and an old familiar song began to play. Withoug even thinking too much about it I began replacing lyrics of the song " Old Cape Cod " with lyrics that matched things I had seen in Iligan City from so many internet images and came up with what I call " My Iligan Song " I ran it through my mind several times making a few changes and I also had to stretch out and slightly modify " Iligan " to make it fit perfectly to the original musical score. I kept it to myself for the most part for a long time after that.
I had been invited to a Birthday Party being held at a resort in Iligan on the third night of my visit. The birthday girl was a friend of those in my Entourage. I was not aware fo the significance of a girls 18th Birthday in The Philippines prior to going to this party. I believe it is somewhat equivalent to what is known here in the USA as a " Sweet Sixteen " party for a 16 year old girl. Fortunatley I had brought along a few extra pasalubongs and thought a nice box of " Whitmans " fancy chocolates would be an acceptable gift.
Much to my surprise, soon after arriving at the resort where the party was being held, I was shown a copy of the program of events for the evenings festivities. I did a double take when I saw my name listed on the program for giving " words of Inspiration " to a crowd of Iliganons of all ages who I had never met before. I had to come up with something fast and I was not sure if many of my words would be understood or interpereted as I meant them to be. I walked over to the balcony to be by myself for a few minutes and looking out over Iligan Bay I realized my answer was right in front of me. this was a Debut party so why not " Debut " My Iligan Song as words of inspiration from someone who came half way around the world specifically to be in Iligan City.
SOmeday I will get someone to play an insturmental version of the music and find someone with a good singing voice to record it for me. Come to think of it I wonder if Nikki Bacolod would be interested in doing a rendition of it since she is an Iliganon herself ! Maybe I'll send her a demo of it.
Here are the words for those of you who have not read or heard them before. This is all based on things that I have seen in internet pictures of Iligan and sounds from videos of Iligan on Youtube, and yes I found them all while I was there.
My Iligan Song:
If you're fond of beaches and salty air
Internet cafes here and there
You're sure to fall in love with Iligan
If you like veggies with a taste of beef
hop on a jeepney go to Jollibee
You're sure to fall in love with Iligan
Winding roads that seem to beckon you
waterfalls with beautiful lagoons
church bells chiming on a sunday morn
remind you of a place where you were born
If you spend a weekend you'll want to stay
watching the moonlight over Iligan Bay
You're sure to fall in love with Iligan
you're sure to fall in love
you're sure to fall in love in Iligan....................
It seemed my " words of Inspiration " were well accepted when presented to a large group of Iliganons for the very first time. If you'd like to see for yourself click on the link and see for yourself. One of the lines of the song was clipped as the videographer not being familiar with the pauses at the end of the song stopped the camera for a few seconds.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fPt8YltS1z0
My Entourage, knowing of my precautionary reservations about the food there and knowing of the precautions I had recieved from the Travel Doctor here, when I returned to my seat after my " words of inspiration " I found my place setting at the table was filled with my favorites from Jollibee ! This emphasized to me an expression I had heard and read many times " The Warmth and HOSPITALITY of Iliganons " !

soo.. this is a lesson for all of us not to judge people without knowing the facts, ang nakaparat pa ky naka black & white pa jud. pero i admired drazen for asking apology & accepts his mistakes & that really matters most. eventhough we are hurting mr. bob's feelings & that's true, but i'm sure he has a kind heart & very understanding person to accept the apology..
Mr. Bob we are very sorry & thank you for being so generous to our city, Iligan. maayong iligan to all of us..

A very nice gesture of a true-blooded Iliganon. @drazen001 act of offering an apology is worth emulating. :okay:

No problem Drazen 001, let this just be a reminder that when you begin reading or join a forum that is on a continuing subject, sometimes it is best to just monitor the forum for a while and backtrack on past posts to get the pulse of the forum and its topic.
Considering all of the precautions facing many foriegners from other parts of the world from reputable agencies just telling my friends " go visit Iligan City " in all probability would not mean very much. People have many reasons for going to the places they doand these reasons can be very different with each individual.
One of the better ways to inform people about a place is in generating enthusiasm about it, but that enthusiasm must be " genuine " and preferably from first hand expereience and that is one of the things this forum in Skyscrapercity.com does very well, it generates enthusiasm.
At this point in time and in my own opinion, Iligan City is geared more towards domestic tourism and travel than it may be for International travel, after all I only found out about it by accident.
If someone came up to you and began a conversation abot a far away place, not easy to get to from where you are, a place you never heard of just how much would you want to hear about it ? Probably not much or you may become bored very easily.
If someone came up to you and posed a question or a statement like I am known for saying quite often " Would YOU go half way around the world for a HAMBURGER ? " " I Did ". Now, a statement like that might have a better chance of gaining and holding someones attention, especially if they have never heard of hamburgers at Jollibee.
Now you may have a better idea of just how Jollibee played a big part in my desire to visit Iligan and the result it continues to create. If you happen to be in Iligan next time I visit, why not join me and my Iliganon friends at Jollibee, Tibanga and I'll buy you some Jolliburgers, Jollihotdogs, Jolli-krispy Fries.........The Works !
My enthusiasm about going to Jollibee, seems to grab peoples attention, after all, it got YOUR attention didn't it ?

You might be able to call this my Signature Pic. I had just arrived in Iligan City when this picture was taken. Two years of learning about Iligan, how to get there, the preparations down to the smallest of detail, the longest air flight I have ever encountered and finally I made it to Jollibee, Tibanga in Iligan CIty. A place in my imagination that actually came to life. I got my wish to be " In The Picture ". It was like diving into my internet screen at my home and comming out on the other end. I hope everyone can experience somethig lke this someday.

I always use a travel agent in planning my travels and the one I use has been in business for many decades. He had never heard of Iligan City prior to my initial plans on going there. My travel agent always knows when I have had a great trip or vacation by my enthusiasm after my return. After my second visit, I stopped by at my travel agents office and presented him whit an official Iligan City Dept. of Tourism brochure, and three discs containing hundreds of still pics from right here on SSC-Iligan and some of the Best of Iigan videos put up on Youtube.com , all made by the proud Iliganons who live there. That is the best kind of promotion possible. Commercial travel websites have never been to many of the places they feature and many times confuse the information they acquire. In the casse of learning about Iligan City, I went right to the source, The Iliganons who inform the world about their city via the Internet on websites just like this one.

Veteran professional Travel Agent Barry Hyatt of Air and Marine Travel in Brewster, New York is now fully equipped with promotional travel information about Iligan City. I'd bet he is the only travel agency around with so much information delivered to him from someone who has really been there !
But wait ! There is still PART FIVE comming soon, so keep watching !

At times it is very easy for any of us to have an incorrect or far from accurate first impression of just about anything. Such was the case the first time I viewed a picture of the main entrance to MSU-IIT.
http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/msuiit_sign-1.jpg
This reminded me of an entrance / exit of an out of business Supermarket ( American Style ) or department sotre. I thought what a novel idea having a building like that, partitioning off the open space inside ( 50,000 sq.ft. or more ) and turning it into classrooms for a college or as part of a university. It appeared until I learned more about it, to be a " store front University " . I had found the website with a drawing of the campus map on it, seen videos taken there and posted by students on Youtube and also spent a considerable amount of time viewing it from the sky using Google Earth. I still could not get that idea of a store front University out of my mind. This was another picture that I wanted to be " In The Picture ". This was just something I had to experience !
During my first week in Iligan, a complete tour of the University was arranged for me. Twelve students and alumni were my tour guides and I spent at least half a day touring the campus, the buildings, faculty and staff areas and even the refreshing Air Conditioned Dunkin Doughnut shop within the campus.
I was never really the most acedemic type of school student in my day but more into technical and commercial trade type of things. When I saw the educational facilities provided by MSU-IIT in such things as Air Conditioning and Refridgeration, Electronics, IT, Automation and similarly related courses of education I was very very impressed. In addition to my tour guides I was able to talk with some of the teaching staff and administrators.
Another item that cought my interest were the archetechure and construction of the buildings designed for a Tropical Climate. I had never experienced this before and found it completely fascination with the open air ventilation, lack of a heating plant, in some of the buildings it created a much more spacious atmosphere which I think could really enhance a learning experience.
Another point of interest to me was the fact that donations of equipment had come to MSU-IIT from many other parts of the world such as the yellow electrical test jig panels I saw in one of the automation labs. I believe they were donated from a company in Italy. It soon became obvious to me that this was no " small town " college and definietly Not a " Store Front University " .
Since the first time I had seen an image of it, I was rather impressed with the MSU-IIT Logo. I had also seen it on a shirt someone was wearing on a Youtube Video and recognised it immediately.

The MSU-IIT Seal of Excellence
You can find the definition for the MSU-IIT Seal of Excellence on this link:
http://www.msuiit.edu.ph/about/iit-seal.php
In much of the text information I had read about Iligan City in the prior two years, it seemed to me that MSU-IIT is a focal point for many things and events that take place in Iligan City and is held in very high regard not only by Iliganons but by the entire educational system of Mindanao and for that matter the entire Republic of the Philippines. Recent events and news items of MSU-IIT, many of which are shown right here on SSC-Iligan, attest to this fact.
On my first visit, the Chancellor was not available to see me and I was greeted by one of the Vice Chancellors. Upon the conclusion of our discussion I asked if there would be something I could have with the MSU-IIT logo on it that I could have as a rememberance of my visit. Moments later I was presented with , for lack of the correct word, I would call a " Pendant " of the logo. I am not totally certain what this pendant ( as shown in my avatar here ) signifies but I knew I would be comming home with something very special from my visit to MSU-IIT.
I had only planned on visiting Iligan City one time last year as after all it is a very long journey and a bit more costly than a flight from Manila to CDO on Cebu Pacific. Three months after my first visit to Iligan I just kept thinking how much I wanted to go there again. I was trying to think of a way to establish some kind of prescence there but in a way that would benefit those that live there. At first thought I felt this would be something not easily accomplished and of what kind of significance would it be to those other than myself.
As I was looking through some of the things I brought home with me from my visit to Iligan, I picked up my souvenier from MSU-IIT and put it on. Moments later my idea to establish some kind of prescence in Iligan City began to form in my mind to establish a Scholarship at MSU-IIT.
I was fully aware of the struggles many students endure to enroll and stay at MSU-IIT to complete their higher education and earn their Degree. Students here in the USA have similar situations too. I had met a few students of MSU-IIT who had to drop out due to shortages of tuition and other funding for many reasons.
Scholarships come in many different forms. They do not necessarily have to be a " Full Scholarship " in where all of a students costs, tuition and expenses are covered by a single Scholarship. Many Scholarships can cover part of the costs and suppliment the burden of the expense of completing a degree course of study at a University. Many scholarships are " customised " with certain qualifying parameters so a Scholarship can be awarded to a student involved in a course of study familiar to or favored by the scholarship creator.
Over a period of a few weeks I put together a set of parameters based on what I had seen and experienced during my tour of MSU-IIT and presented my scholarship plan via Internet to Chancellor Salizar and the Scholarship Department of MSU-IIT. They welcomed my idea and thoughts with open arms and I later was informed that this was the first international Scholarship at MS-IIT. I had made arrangements to have the funding for the first Scholarship to be hand delivered and presented to MUS-IIT in the Chancellors office a few weeks later.
You can read more about it at this link:
http://www.msuiit.edu.ph/news/news-detail.php?id=58
Thre months later I found myself once again visiting Iligan City, just 6 months after my first visit. There were so many more things I wanted to see and do there. Many more pictures of places and things that I wanted to be " In The Picture ".
I visited MSU-IIT once again to personally present the funds for the next recipient of my Scholarship for the 2009 - 2010 school year. This time my guided tour was conducted by Chancellor and Mrs. Salizar showing me various upgrades, new construction and other programs going on at MSU_IIT which to me was quite an education in itself.
It was also on this second visit where I was introduced to the recipient of the scholarship I had created at MSU-IIT a few months earlier and had a very pleasant and informative discussion with her in the Chancellors Office. I was very impressed with the student selection that was made to be the recipient of the first International Scholarship at MSU-IIT which was a result of the souvenier I had brought home from the University on my first visit.
When reading the news of this years Graduation Ceremony of the MSU-IIT Batch of 2009 it was much to my surprise to find that my first Scholarship Recipient was not only Valedictorian of the Batch but had also graduated with such high honors and awards. It gave me a genuine feeling of Pride and Honor myself knowing that my Scholarship at MSU-IIT had played a part in making a students dream come true. you can read more about it at this link:
http://www.msuiit.edu.ph/news/news-detail.php?id=78
http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/MSU-IITSALZPICS-08003.jpg
On my second visit to Iligan City, I present the funding for the next recipient of my Scholarship. The recipient of my first Scholarship is on my left.
There are many Scholarship opportuinties available to students at MSU-IIT and I hope any of them reading this will apply for as many of them as they may qualify for.
For our new participant of SSC-Iligan, I know that you now realize some of my interest and involvement in Iligan City. Should you see pictures I wish to share with others here of enjoying Jolli-Burgers in New York, Las Vegas, CDO or for that matter anywhere else on the globe when I am at a Jollibee ( none of which are near me ) it will always remind me of the thrill and excitement of my first night in Iligan, just about running up the street to be in Jollibee, Tibanga, a place I patiently waited to go to for Two Years.
There are so many interesting and wonderful things in Iligan City. Some of them may be obvious to just about anyone, some of the more subtle things may often be easily overlooked by thise that see and experience them everyday because they live there. SOmetimes it takes someone from a far away place with the interest in learning about a place to dispell some of the negatives often incorectly quoted or misinterpereted about a place. Although the only other place I have been to in The Philippines and Mindanao is Cagayan De Oro because of the airport access to Iligan, I have read many things about Mindanao from others who have actually been there. Going by those first hand descriptions, articles and, photos and videos I think I can accurately describe Iligan as " A Shining Star of Mindanao and The Philippines "
In fact there is even a bit of USA Culture in Iligan that many who live there may have never even thought of. I have read many times that Iligan City is a place where prople of different backgraounds, cultures and beliefs wish to live in Peace and Harmony. From all that I have learned and experienced of Iligan I feel there is a great deal of truth to this. For those familiar with The United States of America, my country was founded several hundred years ago on exactly those saem priceples ! Small world isn't it ?
I think this Youtube Video, made up of contributions originated by Iliganons, including some pics " borrowed " ( but for a good cause ) from right here on SSC-Iligan pretty much sums it up:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BU67X-CYj00
and for the second version:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rLjZeGtuEK4&feature=channel_page
Toward the conclusion of my second visit, a bit of magic took place and something I had wished for actually happened. ALthough it was not in Iligan but in Cagayan De Oro where I actually got to meet the Jollibee Mascot " live and In Person " at one of the shopping malls. I had learned how to sing " The Jollibee Song " esactly as you will hear it on this Youtube Video. A member of my CDO Entourage put this slide show video together while I was in the air on the way back to New York. This video really means a lot to me and represents more of my introduction to what I consider as modern day Philippine culture !
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_WruulHvqs
I look forward to more adventures in Iligan City in the future and at this time I would like to formally welcome " Drazen001 "
"ligan City, A Shining Star of Mindanao and The Philippines "

and again...its nice to know the things youve done to our place and i really thank you for that..
oninBadz April 18th, 2009, 12:53 AM Meron bang re-negotiation between the local government and PAL Express na ituloy ang commercial flight in Baloi airport? Dapat last September 2008 pa yong maiden flight ng PAL Express pero di natuloy.
last January while me and my family were preparing for our annual homecoming to iligan,i tried to e-mail PAL if they still have plans to push the proposed ILGN-MNL flight via PAL Express.in a kind reply and appreciation with my query.ms.Marilou Mendoza of PAL says:they are still waiting for the final assesment being done by CAAP and of course the airport may be ready to receive commercial flights but security in the area is another issue.probably the very reason for the delay of PAL Express flight in Iligan was the kolambugan raid courtesy of some nonsense terrorist.we'll just be crossing our fingers and pray for this flight to materialize soon.Iligan and Iliganons need this...visitors,business people interested in our place would experience the inconvenience of travelling to another city just to take a flight to or from MNL,like the Iliganon's experienced for almost 2 decades now.im still optimistic with this subject though, even if the upcoming Laguindingan Airport
is due to replace Lumbia and Balo-i Airport.but still the inconvenience is there,Laguindingan is still 50KM away from Iligan, and if airlines are considering the market share for passengers in ILGN-MARAWI and neighboring areas it's still enough to have 2x a day frequency flight for Balo-i Airport.would be nice to see local updates from SSC-ILGN about flights in Balo-i Airport..maayong adlaw sa tanan....
Alingatong April 18th, 2009, 02:43 AM ^^Thanks for the info Niño. Hoping to see PAL Express servicing IGN-MNL soon. :)

dark_knight_detectve April 18th, 2009, 03:18 PM BFP-Iligan conducts fire safety evaluation via Barangay Ugnayan (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=8&id=2701)
April 18-19, 2009
LORRY V. GABULE
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ILIGAN City -- “Eradicating fire incidents and enhance community readiness to any type of emergency situation is the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) mandate for and in the interest of public safety and common good.”
This was the statement of City Fire Marshal Alan A. Cabot of BFP-Iligan.
Cabot said a series of Pre-Fire Planning and fire truck visibility and hydrant inspection are being conducted by their Fire Safety and Enforcement Section, through Barangay Ugnayan.
They sat down with the barangay officials during barangay sessions and assembly with the community, furnishing them with the Fire Safety Survey Form, said Cabot.
He explained that the survey form shall be filled out by the barangay chairman, to provide the Bureau necessary data and information on the barangay, to identify areas that are vulnerable to fire occurrences, as well as locations, establishments and structures that pose threat to safety of the residents.
“We also need to get the number of illegal settlers, especially in areas vulnerable to fire incidents, which for sure these settlers also indulge in illegal tapping of electrical cable wiring,” he added.
Also, through Barangay Ugnayan, the Organization of Volunteer Fire Brigade in the barangay shall be strengthened, getting the number of active members and the availability and upgrading of equipment.
They could assist the BFP firefighters if fire occurs within their barangay.
“When fire occurs, we usually encounter problem on the road accessibility for fire truck to get into congested areas especially in the interior part, thus, we encourage the barangay to make proper coordination with the City Engineer’s Office for the access road/or road right of way,” Cabot emphasized.
As to fire fighting capability, the Fire Safety team monitors if the barangay has sufficient water and/or pressure on their existing fire hydrants, if none, the Bureau suggests the construction of water reservoir in the barangay.
The barangay officials can pass resolution for the approval and allot a budget for the overhead reservoir construction.
The Bureau also recommends to barangays if they could possibly make representations to the city level and request for the procurement of fire truck/ pumps.
The barangay can identify volunteers for the fire brigade within the barangay.
The fire prevention symposium/seminars, fire drills in schools, offices, barangays and establishments are regularly conducted by the Bureau, as scheduled.
Cabot reported that the City experienced two fire incidents at Barangays Saray and Tubod during the Holy Week, in the afternoon of Good Friday and at dawn of Easter Sunday.
He said some 200 families, more or less, were displaced, with an estimated structural damage cost of P4 million.
“We urge the officials to actively respond and the general public to participate as part of our pro active measures to reinforce the Bureau’s operational mandate, that is to protect the lives and properties of the city’s constituents,” stressed Cabot. PIA-LANAO DEL NORTE

oninBadz April 18th, 2009, 06:30 PM yeah.. dako jud siya na area... 3 km ang cleared area using google earth.. comparable siya sa mga major international airports sa Pilipinas like Bangoy Intl, Mactan Intl, ug NAIA which ang runway 3km+ ang length sa runways...
so there's still room for expansion then for maria cristina airport(RPMI). i thought the cliffs right near the runway 20 deprived the development or the chance of runway expansion.it should be nice if our local govt.would make some move to give iligan some operational airport of it's own.Laguindingan, same story we still have to travel to that place (some 50KM) just to take a flight.for ozamis and pagadian,it was greatly supported by it's local govt. for a boost, now they got what they worked for,a sure opportunity of boosting their tourism and business sector....

Octavarium April 18th, 2009, 06:47 PM Ahay mas comfortable, King Long or kanang aircon sa Super 5?
based on my personal experience riding both buses, both have comfortable seats. :)
sometimes i'd think the differentiating factors would be the ff:
1. customer service
2. cleanliness inside the bus
3. on-time schedules
i think the re-entry of Super5 in the business is a good sign. i don't have figures but maybe the number of the riding public has increased to a point that Super5 is now catering to an unserved market?

oninBadz April 18th, 2009, 11:18 PM ^^
oh i see, sorry then my bad...well should have been great if the proposed Linamon Airport materialized,it could have been an oppurtunity for Iligan to boost up tourism and stimulate investors to the city.the advantage of having an airport is of course easy access.there's really a possiblity that investors would shower their business plans to cities with airports(easy to access) instead of Iligan for example because they would have to fly in via CDO and the travel another 1hr30mins drive.

regjeex April 19th, 2009, 12:28 PM its good to have an airport but then by having new one which is the government will spend lots of money or just renovate the ma. christina instead.... IMO, linamon is not necessary as of the moment because Laguindingan International Airport is currently on U/C which is part of CdeO-lligan corridor which is Illigan is obviosly part of it. Let's renovate this Ma. Christina Airport...it's unique one... :) I love Iligan too... but I love more Mindanao... ehem...

the police should have been more proactive by establishing regular patrols covering vital infrastractures. Iligan is vulnerable due to the limited number of entry points. There should be checkpoints near the mandulog bridge, tubod ,linamon, buruun and nunucan bridges.

relax, drazen001. there is that possibility that this was not done by terrorists, as one poster in the YouTube video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtNPPoV1sc8)said, considering this was done very early in the morning, in a place where no crowds are present (compared to the shopping mall bombing). the poster pointed the finger at politicians who only want to make money to pay back IOUs.
I'm not saying this is probably the reason, what I'm saying is that explosives are in the hands of rebels, separatists, military, and other people who would like to sow trouble for their own selfish agenda.:ohno:
perhaps it's best to wait for the results of the investigation and hope the truth comes out, and the criminals brought to justice. :bash:

Ditucalan proper and exiting the in Lanao del Sur Highway... than is if your vehicles weighs less than 5 tons because of the on going repair in the bridge... I also observe that area is that most of the small trucks can only pass one at a time due on going repairs thus making it a one way road... :ohno:

g0Rs April 22nd, 2009, 10:09 AM DPWH set to replace damaged bridge in Iligan City
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob
(22 April) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recommended the demolition of the Agus Bridge in Barangay Maria Cristina in Iligan City and construct a triple-span pre-stressed concrete bridge on bored-pile bent type and supports for two intermediate piers.
The 74-meter single-span steel truss which was severely damaged by the April 20 bombings.
The incident, which took place a few days after a commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) defected in Lanao del Norte, resulted in the sudden sagging of the bridge and distortion of its members.
DPWH-10 Regional Director Jerome M. Dela Rosa said because of the already corroded steel truss framing system of the damaged bridge and the sagging effect caused by the bombing, they have recommended the construction of a new bridge to replace it.
“Retrofitting and replacing the damaged sections with new materials would not help because the other members of the steel truss are already stressed. Besides, the bridge might serve only for a few years since its location is too close to the sea where corrosion is excessive,” Dela Rosa added.
Meanwhile, DPWH-10 Regional Information Officer Marichu N. Lago said the new construction may cost some P150 million and is expected to be completed in a year but it would still be more economical in the long run compared with the first option which includes the following:
Provision of steel pile shoring, removing and replacing RC slab for the entire 74 meter span bridge, retrofitting of steel truss framing system by replacing the cut-off and distorted members with new materials and retrofitting of Pier No.1 by removing and reconstructing the coping.
Such option which is estimated to cost only P60 million, has a 6-month duration, Lago added.

g0Rs April 22nd, 2009, 10:13 AM Agus Bridge in Iligan City temporarily closed, DPWH tells public
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob
(22 April) -- The traveling public had been advised of the temporary closure of the Agus Steel Truss Bridge in Barangay Maria Cristina, Iligan City.
Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Region 10, Director Jerome M. Dela Rosa issued the travel advisory to inform the public of the unsafe condition of the bridge.
"Due to the bombing incident that took place at dawn, last April 20, done by some unidentified elements, the bridge is now suffering severe damages that are beyond economic repair," Dela Rosa disclosed.
The main steel framing system of the bridge cannot anymore hold the desired dead loads, as well as, the live loads because the mid-span bottom chords together with the mid-verticals and mid-diagonals at both sides were cut off.
This condition has caused the bridge to suddenly sag resulting in distortions of the already corroded steel members inflicting severe cracks at both sides of the solid shaft Pier No. 1, he added.
Meanwhile, Regional Information Officer Marichu N. Lago of DPWH-10 said an alternative route is expected to be used on April 23 or 24, 2009, and that a detour has already been made available to pedestrians.
Personnel from Lanao del Norte’s two District Engineering Offices and some technical personnel from the DPWH Region 10 are now working round the clock to make a detour for the temporary resumption of vehicular traffic leading to and coming from the western areas, she said.
Located along the Iligan-Cagayan-Butuan Road, the damaged bridge connects Iligan City to the provinces of Lanao del Norte, Misamis Occidental and Zamboanga areas in the west and to Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon and the Agusan provinces in the east. (PIA-10)

g0Rs April 22nd, 2009, 10:16 AM Iligan City celebrates Earth Day
by Lorry V. Gabule
Iligan City (22 April) -- "Maayung Pagsaulog sa atong Kinaiyahan!" (Happy Mother Earth's Day)
This was the greeting of Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz who expressed his gratitude to all who participated in the celebration of one of the most significant events the city along with the whole world - the Earth Day on April 22 at the Children's Park in Barangay San Miguel.
Mayor Cruz said that the overwhelming participation from a multi-sector in our society in a motorcade conducted early morning today signified their concern for Mother Earth.
There were about 100 vehicles roaming around the city's thoroughfare with each unit having streamer and tarpaulin attached, bearing the theme, "Tubig at Lupa Buhayin, Hangin Linisin, Batas Tuparin".
Mayor Cruz acknowledged the presence of the two heads from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Community Environment and Natural Resources Officer Mamacaya M. Lucman of CENRO-DENR Iligan and Forester Sacaruddin L. Magarang of PENRO-DENR Lanao del Norte.
DENR is the lead convenor of the Earth Month celebration but gave the full responsibility to the local government unit in the formulation of activities lined up for this month.
Cruz, wearing a green T-shirt, has reiterated his statement calling the attention of all barangay officials in the implementation of Republic Act 9003, otherwise known as the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.
One worthy project the Mayor emphasized is the putting up of a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) in Barangays which he approved in an Executive Order, appropriating an amount of P150 thousand, taken from each of the barangay's Internal Revenue Allotment (IRA).
"We have already our Central Materials Recovery and Composting Facility at Barangay Bonbonon, which is about to be completed within the year, thus, those concerned barangays need to put up their own MRF for proper disposal of their own wastes," Cruz disclosed.
He also announced that the Iligan City Solid Waste Management Board (ICSWMB) Office, headed by City Councilor and Sangguniang Panglunsod Committee on Waste Management Chair Chonilo Ruiz took charge of the conduct of Capability Building-Institutionalization Seminars to 32 coastal barangays in the City.
"The program has equipped each barangay with the necessary data, strategies and action plan format to devise their individual Solid Waste Management Plan, they could probably submit proposal for the establishment of MRF at their respective areas," he said.
Mayor Cruz concluded his message by reminding everyone the significance of taking care of Mother Earth for the benefit of future generations. (PIA Lanao del Norte)

Actually i was referring to the incident before the bombing.

Work to open 50-year Iligan bridge underway (http://mb.com.ph/node/203029)
By ANGIE CHUI
April 20, 2009, 5:42pm
Public Works authorities are now working on the ground to open a 50-year-old bypass bridge as an alternative route following two explosions in Iligan City which led to massive damage on the Agus Bridge.
In an interview with Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr., he said their field engineers are currently assessing the extent of damage to the structure but it may still take a day or two to fully determine the impact of the blast on the bridge.
Based on initial findings, Ebdane said that the bridge cannot accommodate vehicles but can still be used by pedestrians.
“Agus bridge cannot accommodate the vehicles. But it can carry passengers,” he said. He added that they have also sought the assistance of the military combat engineers to help them.
“I am still waiting for feedback to know if the alternate bridge can be used by motorists in the area, if it can be open to traffic and to know how much weight it can carry,” he said.
The Agus bridge connects Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental.
In a radio report aired over dzBB Monday morning, Chief Supt. Danilo Emperedad, police regional director of Northern Mindanao disclosed that two explosions with roughly one minute at around 1:40 am Monday destroyed both sides of the bridge. Damages were also reported on nearby residences and a National Power Corporation warehouse but no injuries were noted.
In the station’s interview with Iligan City police head Senior Supt. Oscar Aguda, it was learned that the police are in the process of determining what type of explosives were used and who were responsible for the attack.

it may be long.. pero dili biya basta2x pagka damage sa Agus bridge... Engineers have to think other solutions rather than using conventional ways para dili najud mausab kini na incident...
At least... Gi prioritize nila karon ang pag human sa bypass bridge aron maka lahos na ang mga sakyanan.. although one way rajud ra ang available ug puli2x sa lane ra ang flow...

It seems building a pontoon bridge as a temporary solution is rather impossible due to the strong outflow of the river.

A steel bridge unta mas maayo.
In the meantime the military should create a "Vital Installations" company to guard vital infrastructures like power pylons, dams, and bridges which are now targettedby desperate separatists to achieve their goal of dividing Mindanao and sowing hatred among its peoples.

mayapay_416 April 25th, 2009, 06:03 AM Actually i was referring to the incident before the bombing.

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – The government has earmarked some P80 million for the repair of a bridge in the southern Philippine city of Iligan that were damaged by two bombing attacks last Monday.
Public Works Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, who personally visited Agus Bridge Thursday, said the repair would last for 30 to 45 days.
Construction of a detour access bridge adjacent to the main portion of Agus Bridge, meanwhile, is ongoing, according to Ebdane.
Ebdane said P30 million have already been initially released to start the repair.

(mta)

Morag anad ka sa under the bridge nga mga business dealings. Hugaw ang imong hunahuna. Your profession is a Nurse not an Engineer so you have no technical knowledge on this type of repair work.

ICDCC was recognized and received the 'Gawad KALASAG' Regional Awards for three consecutive years from 2006, 2007 to 2008 as Best / Outstanding City Disaster Coordinating Council (Highly Urbanized City Category) in Region 10.
The establishment of the Council in early year of 1990 brought the opportunity for the City of Iligan to be well known throughout the Visayas and Mindanao regions.
It rendered various responses to the different major disasters in the late 1990's such as the flashflood in Camiguin Island, armed conflict between government forces and the lawless Moro Islamic Liberation (MILF) group in Lanao del Norte, and the flashfloods in San Francisco and St. Bernard, both in Southern Leyte.
Rescue 811 of ICDCC received the 'Gawad KALASAG' Regional Award in 2007 and National Award in the years 2003 and 2007 as Outstanding Volunteer Group, added Orbe.
Meanwhile, OCD Region 10 Director Carmelito A. Lupo, along with 10 members of the Regional Selection Committee (RSC) of the Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC), visited the City, being a nominee to the Regional Gawad Kalasag Search for Excellence in Disaster Risk Management and Humanitarian Assistance, to conduct an evaluation.
The City shall be subject to validation based on the 4Ps of disaster management: the prediction, preparation, prevention, and performance.
He said the Gawad KALASAG (which stands for Kalamidad Labanan sa Sariling Galing) aims to recognize outstanding performance of Local Disaster Coordinating Councils (LDCCs), Private Volunteer Organizations, Local, National and International Non-Government Organizations (NGOs), Donor Agencies, and the Communities as major stakeholders in implementing significant Disaster Risk Management (DRM) projects and activities and, in providing humanitarian response and assistance to affected communities.
Likewise, it also aims to recognize individuals, groups or institutions that have shown extraordinary courage, heroism, self-sacrifice, and bravery in times of natural and human-made emergencies and disasters, said Lupo.
He said further, that the basis for the search in all categories, shall be the preceding year covering the period from 01 January to 31 December 2008.

Bamboo April 28th, 2009, 03:30 PM To dashalvin, it seems you have a connection with the MI, since you know what they are doing. Am I right? Then youre blaming our politicians whether its local or provincial.

Bamboo April 28th, 2009, 03:39 PM .
The swine flu epidemic crossed new borders Tuesday with the first cases confirmed in the Middle East and the Asia-Pacific region, as world health officials said they suspect American patients may have transmitted the virus to others in the U.S.
Most people confirmed with the new swine flu were infected in Mexico, where the number of deaths blamed on the virus has surpassed 150.
But confirmation that people have been infecting others in locations outside Mexico would indicate that the disease was spreading beyond travelers returning from Mexico, World Health Organization spokesman Gregory Hartl told reporters on Tuesday in Geneva.
