wow, that's nice to know! kung 30-40%, at least meron nang development! So, with this, meron pang 2 terms si VB sa congress, surely 100% na yan when his last term as congressman arrives, or is it back to square one when the lone district materializes this year? Hopefully. :)

Iligan C-3 road project 15.17% accomplished
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (14 May) -- An accomplishment of 15.17% have been noted by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on the construction of the Iligan City Circumferential (C-3) Road Project, as of April 25, this year.

A commitment of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo during her State-of-the-Nation Address, the Iligan C-3 project is listed under the Mindanao Agribusiness Super Region with a total cost of P363.095 million.

"The project is targeted for completion in 2010 but upon the directive of Public Works & Highways Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane, Jr., we have moved it to an earlier date which is December 2009," Engr. Jerome M. Dela Rosa, Regional Director of DPWH, region 10, said.

About P50 million of the fund was already released in 2008 while the remaining P313.095 million has been released, early this year, he said.

Due to the road right of way (RROW) problem, however, suspension order No. 1 was undertaken effective September 15, 2009, but payment for the affected families along the Pugaan and Iligan Bridges is on-going using the P3.0 million fund provided by the local government unit of Iligan.

Meanwhile, Dela Rosa said the Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC) of the East-West Lateral Road in the Iligan-Bukidnon or Lanao del Norte-Bukidnon Road Project, another Super Region project committed by Pres. Arroyo, has already been approved and its feasibility study in the Iligan side have been completed.

Converted to national road in August 2006 per RA 9348, the Iligan-Bukidnon Road has a total length of 228.83 km. that would connect the two Lanao provinces with that of Bukidnon in Northern Mindanao.

Particularly for the Lanao del Norte side, the length of the road is 63.03 km. of which 6.762. km. is concrete paved while the rest or 56.268 km. is gravel road.

Some 1.225 km. of the road was already completed, as of April 2, 2009, from the P35 million provided by the Iligan LGU and P10 million by the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte released last year.

This year, DPWH is awaiting the release of P80 million for the concreting, at the Iligan Side, of the Iligan-Bukidnon Road.

Above all these releases, at least P1.175 billion more is needed to complete the whole stretch of the road at Lanao del Norte side, Dela Rosa added. (PIA-10) [top]

BOC Northern Mindanao collection up 48.79% in '08
by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (14 May) -- A total of P3.92 billion in customs duties and other taxes have been collected by the Bureau of Customs, District No.10 (BOC-10), last year.

"This amount is actually higher by 48.79%, over our collection of P2.63 billion in the previous year and exceeded by P1.022 billion or 35.32% higher compared to our target of P2.89 billion for 2008," Atty. Abedin P. Macapasir, BOC-10 District Collector, said.

On a monthly basis, October posted the highest collection with P382.91 million, followed by September with P378.79 million.

This was probably because importation was high during these period because people already start their shopping in preparation for the Christmas season.

The rest of the months posted the following amount of collection: July, P355.95 million, June, P352.86 million, January, P342.08 million and August, P340.67 million.

May, P339.05 million, April, P333.92 million, November, P296.66 million, March, P281.24 million, February, P277.78 million and December, P232.88 million.

In terms of performance of the ports within the area of responsibility of BOC-10, the Mindanao International Container Port (MICT) in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental posted the highest collection of P2.19 billion.

This was followed by the Cagayan de Oro City Port, P1.25 billion, Iligan City Port, P469.66 million and lowest in Ozamiz City Port with P9.87 million.

On the other hand, a total of P941.69 million was collected by BOC-10 in the first quarter of 2009.

The highest collection was posted in the month of March with P366.26 million, followed by January, P304.64 million and February, P270.79 million, Macapasir added. (PIA-10) [top]:cheers::cheers:

6th Mindanao Statistics Congress set in Camiguin

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (14 May) -- The Philippine Statistical Association (PSA)-Iligan City Chapter, will be conducting the 6ht Mindanao Statistics Congress at the Villa Paraiso, Mambajao town, Camiguin Province on May 13-15, 2009.

The three-day activity is in collaboration with the National Statistics Office (NSO)-Iligan City/Lanao del Norte Provincial Office, the Iligan City Statistical Coordinating Council (ICSCC), the National Statistical Coordination Board, Region 10 (NSCB-10), and the Camiguin Polytechnic State College.

The Congress, in its continuing tradition, serves as a forum for Statistics practitioners and theorists in the government, academe and private companies which involves simultaneous scientific paper presentations on area that dwell on various statistical topics which are relevant to its theme this year, "Statistics: A Key Towards Economic Stability".

Prof. Rosadelima V. Lopez of the Department of Mathematics, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), an active member of the ICSCC, said the Mindanao Statistics Congress shall discuss recent developments and issues on the nation's Statistical System.

The Camiguin Polytechnic State College will be this year's host.

Prof. Lopez, who is also the chairman of PSA-Iligan City Chapter, revealed that in partnership with the Math Department, PSA has organized the holding of the Statistics Congress every year, which started in Iligan City in 2004, followed by Cagayan de Oro City in 2005, and years 2006 and 2007 for host cities of Butuan and General Santos, respectively.

Zamboanga City was last year's host.

Statisticians, both professionals and students, are invited to present scientific papers, unpublished and novel, on any of the various topics covered in the Congress: Business and Financial Statistics; Econometrics/Statistical Modeling; Statistics in Governance; Mathematical Statistics; Advance Topics in Statistics; Natural Resources and Environmental Statistics; Quality Control and Process Statistics; Statistics in Education and Social Sciences; Peace and Order Statistics; Health Statistics; Agricultural and Fisheries Statistics; Energy Statistics; Statistics in Trade and Industry; Poverty Statistics; Gender Statistics; Biological Statistics; and Physical Statistics.

Criteria to be considered in the review of papers will be the relevance of the paper to the Congress theme, originality and novelty of the research paper, and impact on the demands and requirements of data users/stakeholders.

A registration fee of P3,000 will be charged per participant, exclusive of accommodation, while paper presenters and students will have a discounted rate of P2,500.

To maximize the participant's stay in Camiguin, the Congress' Invitation and Program Committee has scheduled a tour visit a day before the Congress proper.

We are expecting the attendance to reach a hundred or more, as there are from the Visayas region who have confirmed their participation, said Prof. Lopez.

naa nay mga road length markings naka sulat sa whole stretch sa dalan all the way to Brgy. Rogongon... Road construction equipments naa na didto tanan.. as you can see, the vehicle I rode was from CEO Hyundai dump truck.. :)

Glad to hear that the Iligan-Bukidnon Road is now at full works. I already heard the project since Badelles Dynasty (as congressman) but it has been left behind.

some parts of Bonbonon and Digkilaan are already concreted... especially katong Submarine bridge sa Purok Kabangahan, Rogongon kay progressive ang construction sa tulay...

Submarine bridge... ahh did you mean the ford? Like the picture below:

Hahaha! Reminds me of my high school days (La Salle Academy), during Search-In at Mt. Agad-Agad. We have to go down to the spring just to take a bath which is sooooo cold, and go up again to change clothes.

Just watched the video. So, it is really a ford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ford_(crossing)). :)

There are a good number of fords in Iligan City especially at mountain barangays. So far, I found one at Pugaan just few meters beside the hanging bridge (I aptly called Pugaan ford (http://maps.google.com/maps?ll=8.2228127,124.26503&z=18&t=h&hl=en)).

The quest for the perfect pasalubong
OUT OF TOWN By Oliver Victor B. Amoroso Updated May 16, 2009

CEBU, Philippines - My biggest weakness is my propensity to buy pasalubong, and the quest for the perfect “find” is something that I take seriously. “It’s the journey, not the destination” – this couldn’t be more appropriate for all those little walking journeys I did in search of the perfect pasalubong.

Baguio’s peanut brittle and jam

Don’t be fooled by imitations like “Shepherd Shepherd,” “R&B Shepherd,” “Mother Shepherd,” and “Little Shepherd, ” when buying a pasalubong in Baguio. There’s only one “Good Shepherd.” It’s famous when it comes to producing strawberry jam, peanut brittle, and its specialty, the ube jam. Their products are delicious and addictive. I cannot imagine anybody who has visited Baguio and who has not at least tasted and fallen in love with their peanut brittle, strawberry and ube jam. It’s the best jam I have tasted (and I have tasted a lot considering my mom’s Ph.D. dissertation before was all about the famous Philippine yam). The jam is sold warm and the bottles still uncapped. Then, they give you this spiel about waiting before you seal it and refrigerating it as soon as possible. Needless to say, there are hundreds of cars circling Baguio sightseeing with open jars of ube jam in their back seats!

Others: Peanut Brittle (Romana); Salad Vinaigrette (Cafe By the Ruins); Raisin Bread and Michaelangelo Sans Rival (Baguio Country Club); and Baguio Longganisa (Baguio Market)

Bacolod’s cakes

Being the capital of the sugar-producing province of Negros Occidental, do you know that Bacolod still has a secret only a few know? It’s Calea’s cakes. The cake shop first opened its doors beside the L’ Fisher Hotel in Lacson Street. In no time, word spread out like wildfire. Loyal patrons immediately grew in number; thus, the need for a larger space. Calea then opened their second store at the Robinson’s Place in Mandalagan, Bacolod City. And just recently, they also opened their third branch at the East Block, along the Circumferential Road. So what’s with Calea, anyway? It’s one of a kind. No Metro Manila cake shop could ever beat the cakes of Calea. And their cakes are cheaper, too (pegged between Php50-65 per slice)! My personal favorites are the cheesecake and the lemon torte cake. So when you get a chance to visit Bacolod City, never dare miss the cakes of Calea.

Others: Piaya and Barquillos (BongBongs); Barquiron and Galletas (Sugarlandia); Napoleones (Roli’s and Pendy’s); and Half Moon (Pendy’s).

Pangasinan’s dried fish and shrimp paste

The province of Pangasinan is around 3 hours north of Manila. Being a coastal province surrounded on two sides by the sea, we stopped in the middle of the night at a row of small stores all selling dried fish and bagoong at Rosario, a small town in Pangasinan along the highway. All sorts were piled high in round baskets, and the smell of salted fish (pungent but clean-smelling) permeated the air. There were espada (swordfish) cut up into 6-inch lengths and myriad others. Most were halved in the middle and then spread apart – even the very small fish – so that they are paper thin and almost transparent when dried, with no saltiness. Each piece is very crinkly when fried. Then dipped in spicy vinegar! There was also the familiar tuyo – dried sardine or similar, salted whole. Pangasinan is also known for its bagoong – shrimp paste, now marketed in almost all oriental stores in its raw salted form or sauteed as spicy or sweet bagoong. Invariably, the small jar label bears the word “Dagupan” which has become synonymous with the shrimp paste product.

Cagayan de Oro’s ham, cheese sticks, and flavored peanuts

There are several delicacies being sold in shopping centers like SM City and Limketkai Mall. The popular ones are Fely’s homemade cheese sticks and assorted flavored peanuts. Chicharon (pork rind) made by Slers is fast becoming a popular snack. Cashew nuts from Lumbia are also gaining popularity.

Others: Delicacies from nearby provinces are also sold in Cagayan de Oro, such as the Pastel from Camiguin Province, Cheding peanuts of Iligan City and other products of Monastery Farms of Bukidnon Province (Monks Blend Coffee and Piniato).

Friday, 15 May 2009

(mta)

:ohno:

Global Steel gets offers for Iligan mill

By IRMA ISIP

Global Steel Industries Philippines (GSPI) has received offers from several parties for the acquisition of its Iligan steel mill, according to Trade secretary Peter B. Favila.

Favila said the plant has been operating "on orders" because of poor market conditions and falling steel prices.

Favila said GSPI officials updated him two months about the offers.

"It’s a private transaction," said Favila when pressed for details. He added the interested parties are local groups with joint venture partners who are keen on acquiring the entire facility.

Favila said he told the GSPI officials that "if there’s an opportunity, you should explore it."

GSPI officials could not be reached for comment.

GSPI continues to be beset with other problems, among them its debt with the National Power Corp. and unpaid real estate taxes with the local government of Iligan.

Favila said the company has yet to secure the title for the property where the facilities of the GSPI are sitting on.

Favila said the property remains mortgaged with the banks.

GSPI incurred P2 billion worth of obligations in the form of real property taxes from 1999 to present but the company questioned the amount saying, it only took control of 10 percent of the facilities owned by National Steel Corp. and should not shoulder all the obligations.

The firm also has piled up debts with Napocor.

The company has been seeking a guarantee from the Philippine Export-Import Bank for a $20-million loan it was securing from various banks to purchase raw materials.

Global Ispat Holdings Ltd. (GIHL), owner of GSPI took over the facilities of NSC in 2004 for P13.25 billion payable over eight years, including a P1 billion downpayment.

The company has spent $195 million to upgrade the plants since it took over. It recently opened the plate mill facilities.

It has rehabilitated and reopened the hot rolled and cold rolled mills which produce the basic flat and long steel products. The company currently exports 70 percent of its output.

GSPI was reported to be target for acquisition two years ago, purportedly as part of consolidation of operations within the region.

Global Steel Holdings Ltd., the umbrella company managing GSPI, has a steel capacity in excess of 14 metric tons in six plants spread across the world. A;art from the Philippines, it has plants in Bosnia, Bulgaria, Libya, Nigeria and India.

Takeover groups circle floundering Iligan mill (http://www.yehey.com/news/article.aspx?id=239928)
By Elaine R. Alanguilan

GLOBAL Steel Philippines Inc. is now the subject of a takeover bid from several groups, but its Mumbai-based owners are not keen on selling it despite irregular operations because of the global economic slowdown.

Trade Secretary Peter Favila told reporters the former National Steel Corp. plant in Iligan City had been operating intermittently for the past two months at least.

A company official informed me two months ago that the plant is not on regular operations. It only operates when there are orders. Apparently, they were also hit by the crisis, Favila said.

He said the company official had also informed him that several groups were interested in buying the facility, but Global Steel would rather keep the plant.

The prospective buyers were not named by the company official who spoke with the trade secretary.

I told them the company should explore such opportunities. If it makes good business sense and the price is right, then they can decide whether to sell it or not, Favila said.

Apart from the sluggish demand given the slowdown in global economies, the company, which acquired the mothballed steel plant from state-owned National Steel Corp., also had to deal with billions of pesos in unpaid debt to creditor-banks and millions of pesos in overdue electricity bills and city taxes.

The company has already filed a case against its creditors before a Singapore court, preventing them from declaring the company in default.

Several banks declared Global Steel in default in October 2005, when it failed to pay its debt, while renegotiating the terms of a P12.25-billion loan.

The banks include Bank of Commerce, China Banking Corp., Land Bank of the Philippines, Metropolitan Bank and Trust Co., Philippine National Bank, Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. and United Coconut Planters Bank.

Apart from its debts and the sluggish demand, the steel company also had to contend with issues on quality standards.

The Filipino Galvanizers Institute, which represents steel users, earlier slammed the government for granting tariff protection to Global Steel when it declared commercial operations, saying that drove up local prices.

With higher tariffs, the domestic users of steel were forced to get their requirements from Global Steel, which they said could not comply with the quality standards, or pay higher duties on imported steel.

Mumbai-based Global Ispat Holdings, one of the worlds leading steel producers, took over National Steel in 2004. Global was to pay a P13.25 billion in eight years under the purchase agreement for the plant.

Global Steel is the principal supplier of flat products in the Philippines and other markets in Southeast Asia. Its products include hot rolled coils, hot rolled plates, cold rolled coils and tinplates.

Firm to sell Italian engine oil Agip in RP
05/19/2009 | 06:05 PM

MANILA, Philippines - A Philippine company and its European partners will be introducing “Agip," an Italian engine oil brand, betting that the high-quality, environmentally-friendly product will attract Filipino customers.

Veredium Energy Ventures, Inc., Agip’s exclusive Philippine distributor, will be infusing P100 million for the next two years as part of its “intensive marketing campaign" for what it claims as Italy’s top engine oil brand.

Besides emphasizing Agip’s product quality, the company’s marketing campaign will also underscore its ecological soundness.

The company’s products “are the first and only engine oils in the Philippines and the region to have earned the Green Choice Seal for our strict adherence to stringent technical and environmental standard," Petteri Makitalo, the company’s president and chief executive officer, said in a briefing.

These standards include a minimum 10,000 km oil change interval and a system of retrieval and disposal of at least 25 percent of engine oil sold," he added.

Veredium, chaired by former senator Leticia Ramos Shahani, also plans to sell at least 15 million liters of its engine oil in the Philippines, which is ten percent of its total sales of 156 million liters.

To meet its sales goals, the company will distribute its products in Metro Manila and then in Visayas and Mindanao, Makitalo said.

At the same time, it will flood the market with its products by partnering with a few distributors which will target 100 retailers, Makitalo added.

Its lubricant warehouse in Iligan City will complement the company’s expansion in Mindanao, the company said.

The company may also consider putting up a blending plant in the Philippines, said Makitalo, who is a co-founder and trustee of the Foreign Chambers Council of the Philippines and also a trustee of the Philippine-Finland Association.

Veredium already has a blending facility in Singapore.

“If the sales are good in the next two to three years, we may consider constructing a blending facility or partner with an existing company with a blending plant," he said.

A 15 million-liter plant would require at least $500,000 capital.

Veredium, the exclusive distributor of AGIP lubricants, is also the exclusive partner of BASF A.G. for Performance Chemicals.

Through its European affiliate, the company provides services to Asian companies to develop new markets in Western and Eastern Europe. - GMANews.TV

Are they also going to provide parking space?

Ano kayang problema? From the time of Cabili hanggang kay Cruz ganoon pa rin. Bakit kaya? :bash:

Kanya kanya kasi priority projects every administration. Pansin ko rin most road projects nila are either located in the highway or big roads kasi nakikita kaagad ng mga tao. :bash:

When I was there at MSU-IIT I had a problem with my camera ( cheap batteries I brought from home only lasted a few minutes after putting them in my camera ) made the camera malfunction and useless. I thought it was from the larger capacity SD Card I had put in it. I will try to be better equipped next time. I remember being in the places you took these photos. Thanks.

Yes, it's in Iligan. It's the first virtual/satellite facility of a known BPO located somewhere far from Iligan. It's like remote seats extension of the main facility made possible through a hi-speed internet connectivity. Actual operation/work will be done here in Iligan but still be under the supervision of the bosses located somewhere else. :)

CHO Iligan maintains fight, advocacy vs dengue fever
by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (20 May) -- We urge the community to organize themselves to remove all possible breeding places of mosquitoes inside and outside of houses.

This was the statement of Assistant City Health Officer Cherlina C. Can'averal of the City Health Office (CHO) of Iligan, during an interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Iligan City Information Center.

Water stored in containers like tin cans, old rubber tires, bottles, flower vases, rain barrels, or drain accumulated water from trees and plants could be the breeding places of Aedes aegypti, a day-biting mosquito that lays eggs, the transmitter of the disease called Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever, said Dr. Can'averal.

As part of our whole-year round activity on education campaign on the prevention aspect, our front liners-the Barangay Health Workers (BHW) have been conducting lectures on cleanliness and sanitation among inside and outside the household premise.

Likewise, Sanitary Inspectors (SI) have been checking the canals in the respective barangays, that dredging of this clogged canals could be one preventive measure for these mosquitoes not to lay eggs, Dr. Can'averal meted out.

She added that the opening of classes in the month of June falls on a rainy season. We encourage the school's health nurse to conduct safety measure tips on the prevention aspect, and if ever fever persists, school children could be warned on the following manifestations as to occurrence of this disease:

That dengue hemorrhagic fever is an acute infectious viral disease usually affecting infants and young children. It is characterized by fever during the initial phase, and other symptoms like headache, pain in the eye, joint pain, muscle pain, followed by signs of bleeding, red tiny spots on the skin, nose bleeding, and gum bleeding. If there is blood in the stool or blood in the vomitus and accompanied by shock, this is called Dengue Shock Syndrome and is often fatal, the city health officer explained.

Dr. Can'averal stressed, sudden onset of high fever which may last 2 to 7 days could be alarming, and that not only children are prone to be victims of dengue, but adults could be inflicted, as well.

Thursday, 21 May 2009

Iligan's GMA employment kiosk serves jobs, livelihood seekers
by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (22 May) -- At least of 30 job-seeking individuals in a day are being served by the Greater Modular Access (GMA) Employment Kiosk, a Job center located at the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), City Hall Building, Buhanginan Hills in Iligan City.

The GMA kiosk, is an information portal designed by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) to provide information on employment and livelihood opportunities to the public for free.

Mila A. Rodrigo, assistant head of PESO Iligan, said with the assistance of an Information Technology (IT) expert assigned in the GMA Jobs center, individuals can search for job vacancies, register and post their skills, do Job matching, and check skills posted.

Job seekers can also get information on the list of Licensed Recruitment Agencies for local and overseas employment.

The GMA kiosk is available from Mondays to Fridays only. The unit, which can be found inside our office, serves not only the Iliganons but also the neighboring provinces like Misamis Oriental and Lanao del Norte, and the visitors alike, said Rodrigo.

While it was an opportune time for the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Iligan to have acquired this unit last May of 2008, because other LGUs have aspired to acclaim the same, according to Remegio S. Caban'og, head, DOLE Iligan City/Lanao del Norte District Office. This was operational after we require PESO Iligan to have an IT to handle the center.

Caban'og stressed, adding to say, the GMA Jobs Center provides everyone free state-of-the-art employment service, gives you the latest Job opportunities, and you can access to valuable information on services of DOLE agencies like Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), and Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA). Tanong ko lang. Meron bang enough capability, capacity and technical know-how ang City Engineers Office natin para syang gagawa ng asphalt laying or paving sa mga kalsada natin? I mean yong mataas ang kalidad at pulido ang pagkagawa.

Kadaghanan sa mga technical men sa CEO walay experiensiya sa modern method on asphalt construction. Why?

I actually find that a wrong concept. Imagine what will happen to the Philippines if every Filipino is encouraged to leave the country. Patay na ang ating bansa nyan.

The best solution to the economic problem that we're facing now is to encourage the people to go into micro-finance businesses. If everyone is into business, the economy will move even how small the volume is. There would be more trading, and that means, more money will circulate giving hope for every Filipino.

I once lived abroad (not too long ago) as a student, and later, as a bank employee. I've met some Filipinos there, mostly nurses, carers, hotel staff and cooks. I've seen their conditions and the kind of lifestyle they're trying to live. They may be making lots of money, but they work like dogs. If we would do the same in the Philippines, we would not be poor.

I would encourage everyone to be like intsik --highly entrepreneurial, mature and frugal. That's actually the open secret of our Chinese brothers that's why they're economically more successful than most Filipinos.

^^ True, it's gonna create a "brain-drain" scenario coz almost all of the best professionals in the country are "out-migrating".

Seriously, the government should tackle this issue and not only try to maintain the "dollar influx" in the country. They should also try to work into creating or stimulating several industries to support future graduates and thereby upgrading the purchasing power of the Pinoys.

Have they not watched those documentaries by GMA 7 and ABS CBN 2? Almost all aspects of the problems of the Filipino life are tackled there. Can't they understand those shows? they are spoken in FILIPINO!!! :bash:

Seriously speaking, watching the numbers of poverty ratio, inflation rate, unemployment rate, budget deficit, migration rate and "brain-drain" phenomena should be duly acted on by the government, the president should not just command her "money-fed" advisers. These advisers should tell her the numbers and the situation too.

I wonder if our government officials play SIM CITY 4, so they would understand how a CITY/COUNTRY should be run-without CHEATS ha! LOL Even in the cyber games there are CHEATS! :bash:

Fire hits NPC regional office in Mindanao

By Richel Umel
Inquirer Mindanao
First Posted 19:19:00 05/16/2009

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines -- A three-hour fire razed half of the second floor of the building of the National Power Corp.’s Mindanao Regional Office in Barangay Ditucalan here Saturday, the city fire office said.

The building also houses the office of the National Grid Corp.

Fire Officer Butch Poblete said the fire broke out at 1 a.m. and damaged equipment, including that used to determine the power load dispatch for Mindanao areas, and valuable records.

He said arson investigators were still trying to determine the cause of fire and the extent of the damage.

NPC sources said they estimated the damage to be between P40 and P50 million.

The Inquirer learned that NPC officials held an emergency conference following the fire but no statements have been issued.

Inquirer.net (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/regions/view/20090516-205385/Fire-hits-NPC-regional-office-in-Mindanao)

this could mean a fresh tranche of loan will be sought by NPC to recover the loss. and that could only mean our yet-unborn grandchildren's debt will increase. <groan>:omg:
NPC is either an epitome of financial incompetence, or the favorite milking cow of powers that be.
when will we ever change?:ohno:

Iligan City’s triple celebration begins on National Flag Day

Iligan City – Among Iligan’s major community programs undertaken yearly is the joint observance of three civic events celebrated very closely to each other.

This year’s triple celebration will give life to the observance of the National Flag Day on May 28, the 111th Philippine Independence Day on June 12, and the 59th City Charter Anniversary on June 16.

A Management Committee was created through Executive Order No. 51, signed in March 2009, by Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz, which constitutes three Technical Working Committees that will attend to the details of the triple celebration.

City Councilor Ariel P. Anghay, Sangguniang Panlunsod, Iligan City, has been appointed to be the chairman of the Management Committee, assisted by over-all Secretariat Agnes M. Clerigo-Maingat, head of the City Tourism Office.

The city will memorialize starting from the traditional observance of the National Flag Day with a program at the city public plaza to be led by the key officials of the city.

The Department of Education (DepEd), headed by City Schools Division Superintendent Domingo V. Samson shall coordinate pertaining to activities for this event.

Councilor Anghay said they sent out a copy of the Executive Order to all sectors of the community to participate, especially in the hanging and display of Philippine Flag along their area.

The country’s kick-off launching of the National Flag Day will be on May 25th. It is a campaign to all government offices, business , non-governmental organizations, industries, the local government unit, and the general public, the need to promote public awareness of good citizenship values such as love of country, respect for the flag and the elderly, patriotism and nationalism.

Likewise, the need to promote and sustain reverence and respect for the Filipino flag, the National Anthem and other national symbols, which embody national ideals and traditions, said Anghay.

Thus, it is only appropriate for all sectors to appreciate the observance of the amalgamated affair, extend their support, and avail of opportunities to promote the city’s culture, tradition, people, socio-economic, tourism, agro-industry and ethnic interests, stressed Councilor Anghay.

For this year, the theme is consistent with the 111th Independence Day Celebration theme which is: “Kagitingan, Kagalingan at Kasipagan, Tungo sa Tunay na Kalayaan”. (Lorry V. Gabule, PIA-Lanao del Norte)

The Iligan-Lanao Group of Ontario, or ILGO, held a Spring dinner-dance last April 18, 2009 at the Korean Cultural Center in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The event was attended by more than 200 guests. The highly-successful fundraiser was chaired by Olga Abellanosa. Consul Imelda Panolong, whose origins are in Lanao, was guest of honor. Also gracing the occasion were Consul-General Mosquera and Mr. Eric Parungao, representing the OWWA. Part of the proceeds--$700--was donated to the Ranao Women's & Children's Crisis Center located in Iligan City.

In the past, ILGO has also donated to the feeding program of the Diocese of Iligan and to the G. T. Lluch Memorial Hospital.

Photo shows the active members of ILGO (left to right): Chary Abellanosa-Sabayle, Mae Aguilar-Tan, Belinda Alcopra-Reponte, Mimi Abellanosa, Nonic Abellanosa-Gomez, Olga Abellanosa, Consul Imelda Panolong, Ricky Caluen (ILGO Coordinator), Jim Panolong, Bebs Babelonia, Edu Sabayle, Salvador "Buddy" Baguio, and Manny Tan. That's unlikely, IMO they will still be minority. Christian families living in slums in MIndanao produce more than any Maranao family in Lanao and Cotabato. That scenario would not be the case within 75-200 years. Ruling Mindanao isn't about Muslim-Christian population. Let's say they will overtake the Christian population in MIndanao, do you think Christians would like to live in a place without rules? Christians would surely look for a place to live elsewhere and they (maranaos/muslims) would be trading to themselves. They will never prosper without us. Coz some muslims don't like to live with fellow muslims alone because of those "RIDO" (clan/family wars). According to a fellow parent in my daughter's school who's a Maranao whom I befriended, they left Lanao del Sur because of their muslim relatives who always create "rido" or family vs. family wars.

That's true.

Tuesday, 26 May 2009

(boy decena)

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (26 May) -- They came, they played, they conquered.

It was one of the most anticipated concerts hosted by the Provincial Government of Lanao del Norte for year 2009.

With their solid vocals and right mix of pop, R&B and original hits, Freestyle successfully converted the more than three thousand spectators who flocked to the Mindanao Civic Center gymnasium into avid fans last May 23.

The concert is one of the major activities sponsored by the provincial government as it gears up for grandest celebration of its 50th Araw ng Lanao del Norte on July 4 this year.

"We are very happy to be invited here in Lanao del Norte. We are amazed to see the beautiful facilities that you have here like the Mindanao Civic Center complex", said Freestyle vocalist Jinky Vidal.

The members of the country's best-loved band are Mike Luis (formerly of Brand New Funk, Next Level), and Joshua Desiderio (formerly of Kindred Garden, Art & Soul), Rommel de la Cruz on bass (formerly of Barbie's Cradle), Gerald Banzon (drums), Nikki Cabardo (keyboards), Tat Suzara (guitar), and Jinky Vidal (vocals).

"This is just one of the event sponsored by the provincial government headed by our dynamic Governor Mohamad Khalid Quibranza-Dimaporo as we set the stage for the grandest celebration of the Golden Anniversary of Araw ng Lanao del Norte", Provincial Information Officer Lyndon Calica said.

Providing the fronts acts for Freestyle are two sensational local bands from the cities of Iligan and Tangub, Overdrive and All-Star.

"I envisioned this year's celebration of the Araw ng Lanao del Norte to be the grandest ever. We have lined up a lot of activities that will highlight the economic gains of the province and will also showcase Lanao Norte's beauty and bounty which we have been widely known for", explained Governor Dimaporo.

Another awaited event is the concert of Bamboo, the country's premier OPM rock band during the week-long celebration of the province's golden anniversary this July. (VNL/PIO-LDN)

Jatropha plantations

THE BIOFUELS arm of the state-owned Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) has signed deals with three groups to start jatropha plantations in Biliran, Aklan and Iligan. PNOC-Alternative Fuels Corp., will fund 200 hectares owned by the San Juan Capenyahan Producers Cooperative in Biliran, 450 hectares of the Malagsum Highlands Multi-Purpose Cooperative in Iligan, and 1,000 hectares of RSL Agro-Trade Company, Inc. The PNOC unit will supply jatropha seedlings and other inputs, pay for labor during the planting process, and provide technical assistance. The three groups will provide labor and manage the plantation together with the PNOC unit. Jatropha seedlings, which have an oil content of 37%, are used in biodiesel production.

BPO center in Iligan launched (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/bpo-center-iligan-launched)

By Bong D. Fabe

THE Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) program led Wednesday the launching of a business-process outsourcing (BPO) facility in the campus of the Marawi State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City.

Nikki Meru, GEM media liaison, said the 24-hour BPO facility is owned by HP Outsourcing Philippines, Inc., a subsidiary of the Hubport Group.

The facility will serve as a remote (or virtual) office for Hubport’s commercial operations, as well as a virtual computer laboratory for the on-the-job training of IIT students on Web design, animation, transcription services and other skills, with the expectation that selected students will eventually be hired by Hubport.

Hubport will also help selected students hone their English skills through GEM’s Job Enabling English Proficiency project, which is in place at MSU-IIT, Meru said.

Hubport will also share best practices in BPO operations with MSU-IIT. It will also assist the university’s faculty in tailoring the institute’s information and communications technology (ICT) curriculum to the BPO sector’s needs to ensure that the skills of the local labor pool match industry requirements.

Friday’s launching is the fruit of the business partnership between MSU-IIT, a state-run university located 88 kilometers from this capital city of Northern Mindanao (Region 10) and known for its information technology (IT) and engineering programs, and HP Outsourcing Philippines, Inc., a major business-process outsourcing (BPO) company.

The GEM program, funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) had helped facilitate the partnership between Hubport and MSU-IIT.

Hubport, which has offices and partners in the US, Canada, the UK, Saudi Arabia and Japan, provides Web-based services from web-site design, development, hosting and search-engine optimization, to Internet consultancy, e-commerce, multimedia design and BPO.

Gusto nimo ang tanan "Filipino" mahimong employer...so ..wala nay employee and buyer.

Bamboo, that's not how economics would flow under a richly entrepreneurial environment such as the one I was talking about. Okay, let me explain this to you very briefly.

When there is trading (exchange of goods) there is business. When there is business, there are jobs. When there are jobs, there's money. When there's money, there's potential to buy. The whole system makes a thriving economy. When there's a thriving economy, the locals don't need to wipe the asses of foreigners. They would be wiping their own residues from richness, if you get what I mean.

Of course, not everyone is created equal. That's a fact of life. That's also probably the reason why communism doesn't work exactly as the political scientists envisioned it to be. Some people are highly entrepreneurial and achievers. Some are the exact opposite. And some are in-between. Whatever characteristic you have, you would have usefulness in an highly entrepreneurial environment.

So..unsa bah kini ka klase nga encouragement?

You need to understand that I'm not belittling OFWs here. Of course, I am very aware that their collective contribution to the Philippines is a major driving force that pumps the economy to stay afloat. Their annual remittances of $10 billion is something that can hardly be ignored in terms of economic contribution, and possibly, progress. Again, possibly. However, the Philippines cannot rely solely of on their remittances. As we send workers abroad, we lose talents that are rather potentially useful for the development of our country. We just don't send nurses, maids, drivers, laborers abroad, we also send top talents who are mostly graduates of our country's top schools. For example, UP Diliman, UP Manila, De La Salle University and Ateneo de Manila graduates -- the top 4 schools in the Philippines -- leave the country in droves. Our top 10 in UP Diliman have all gone abroad. Our school/college valedictorian is now working in Wall Street, NYC as a Management Consultant of McKinsey. Several UP engineers are working in Japan, South Korea, and probably, Dubai or wherever construction is abundant. That's what we call "brain drain". Other people/citizens are utilizing their talents instead of their country and their countrymen.

Your remittances may have helped remedied the problem that besieged our country today. But the long term effect of that is more harmful than sacrificing ourselves now by staying in the Philippines and contributing for its progress no matter how slow it may be. If our country continues to send top-flight Filipinos abroad (and leaving the "rotten" around to do the daunting tasks), imagine the effect of such scenario in the long run. My take on this issue is probably different from yours. But at least, I see potential in the Philippines that I'm so willingly ready avail of despite the risk (if it's so risky indeed) than wipe asses of foreigners. Of course, not every OFW wipes asses. That's just a metaphor.

I understand the situation that you're in and I admire you for being a fighter. We know that you're standing on a precarious situation as the Iraq that we knew is now a war zone, but you need to do what you're supposed to do, and you're actually doing it that's why you're there. With our country's present economic ill fortune, I'm sure many Filipinos would be willing to risk their lives and work in Iraq just so they can provide for their family. However, I cannot recommend your success (if you think that's success) to other Filipinos and I hope you understand my position too.

I wish you good luck on your journey in Iraq and may the lord keep you away from harm and danger. When you have enough savings, come back here and let's help build this rotten country of ours. :)

Thursday, 28 May 2009

(mta)

From your post I understand you are saying that the distribution of wealth and the government are to blame for the ills of the country. You have a point. But moving forward, I think it is overly generalizing the circumstances.

John Gokongwei started very poor. The same with Tony Tan Caktiong. They persevered. They worked hard. They fell, but they stood up. They may have complained about how corrupt the government is, but in the end, they worked hard and was rewarded for it---profits and business growth.

If one is to fall victim to outside circumstances, then its highly probable success may not be reached---like a vicious cycle.

If one has a solid determination, impossible is nothing.

I think one thing too about our local producers, they need to re-invent themselves through the help of DOST and other significant offices who really know the type of industry that these local producers are into.

ANother is our local government should also discover and stimulate other industries through livelihood workshops and technological seminars on the scope of how a significant industry is doing globally and how such industry will be able to make our "new" entrepreneurs benefit from it.

Offering "pautang" through loans will not work, in the end the "loan" will just be wasted without the know-how and techonology transfer.

What I have seen now? Because "SUKANG PINAKURAT" worked, some of our local entrepreneurs here are already venturing into vinegar making. Let us venture into some other varieties and not just repeat another product. Repeating a product would mean killing this local industry.

True. Many hardworking individuals were able to hurdle their struggle with poverty. I think some of Filipinos under the poverty line are just too stubborn to make their own ways. With poverty already eating a big slice of the Philippine society, the government should look for ways to bridge that gap.

Perhaps, our government should make a 20 year program to slowly bridge the gap between the rich and the poor through one member of each family under the poverty line and make sure they can land a job in the future. That would also mean giving them jobs in our government offices so they can support themselves while being educated by our government. When they have a job already, then those individuals should be able to make ways to educate the one who's next in line in their family.

Let's start with the younger generations in families who are under the poverty line. Because they are the one's who are going to shape the future. This may be painfully slow but it would be fruitful and worth trying. We cannot just give them one meal in every 7 years for a living. Let's teach them how to make a living. WE HAVE A LOT TO LEARN FROM CONFUCIUS SAYING: "Give a man a fish and he will eat for the day, Teach a man how to fish and he will eat for his lifetime" (if I remember this quote right)

It's not so much on being a billionaire or something like that, ditto with where one was born. I can't exactly recall how many Filipinos born in the country who rose to become successful businessmen/women, but the gist is all about one's attitude towards the circumstances affecting the business.

I think it's how we accept and react to failure that will determine how high we can bounce back. Be they Filipino-Chinese, Filipino-Americans, or just plain Pinoy, the business environment will always present challenges.

I believe this is where entrepreneurship comes in; it helps everyone with an open mind and a heart that believes failure is just temporary.

Para madako ang industria- kinahanglan ta mag-export but we cann't compete with other Countries with this type of product here in Iligan, except sa Cheding ug sa Pinakurat. Type of Product, prize, quality and Production capacity ma-oy atong tan-awon and a good business plan.

Have you heard about this furniture maker in Cebu whose products were bought by a hugely popular Hollywood actor-actress couple? People said at first that it was just a cottage industry; but then this furniture maker persevered and just concentrated on making quality furniture. What happened next can lay to rest what you've posted.

Ang suggestion ni TONZI ma-o ni, we need a help from DOST for new technology nga atong buhaton/negosyohon. I think one factor these businesses have in common in terms of staying power is a good understanding of their markets and the ability to deliver. At the heart of such businesses is the determination to survive.

Anyways, regarding the financial help from DOST, that's true and I agree with that. Although the entry cost is usually high for technology/infrastructure business, the long-term profit potential is attractive.

An example is San Miguel Corporation---known for food and beer for more than a century, it is now entering into the power/infrastructure sector.

I'm not sure about your criteria but business being "good" is also dependent on cash flow requirement, market maturity, forecasted demand, external factors such as tariff limits, etc.

I've heard Global Steel is not yet even operating at 100%.

Hi Octavarium:

One example nga puede nato mahimo nga negosyo deri sa Iligan, ang "Waste to Liquid Fertilizer" utilizing the biodegradable waste nga gikan sa municipal solid waste sa Iligan. We have around 180 tons of MSW a day in Iligan, and about 70% ani bio-degradable. Kini nga process maka-pangayo kita ug tabang sa atong DOST for technical assistance and then ang organization nga mag-sugod sa negosyo thru cooperatives. Land Bank and DBP duna na silay soft loans up to 80% sa project cost. Ang remaining 20% equity can be funded again by another bank for equity loans.

Additionally , think of all the jobs it will create that do not even exist in the region now such as:

Security jobs
Maintenance jobs
Ticket agent counters and baggage handling
Automation systems and IT
Retail airport shops and eating facilities
Possible hotel facilities within or near to the airport
and yes, Convention Centers and more

that is a big potential for the creation of a lot of jobs that do not exist now.

To develop Iligan, we need Investors. How? Iligan City Government and NGO's will prepare a pre-feasibility studies for potential manufacturing projects in Iligan. Then invite Investors thru Build-Operate-Transfer scheme. Investors then will spend their owned money for a "Detailed Feasibility Study". Walay kwarta nga gikan sa siyudad nga magasto kay all expenses gikan man sa mga Investors. Only, para maka-kita ug investors, ang siyudad kinahanglan dunay sakto nga incentives ug tabang for project developers.

Looks like Bamboo has a weird concept of what business really is as he has criteria for such. To his mind, a sari-sari store isn't business. Here are some odd notions he has about business:

Chedings Peanuts - real business
Sukang Pinakurat - real business
sari-sari store - monkey business
local producers/manufacturers such as those flower vase made of bamboo, or pottery, abbaca, etc.. - monkey business

People, you be the judge.

The best solution to the economic problem that we're facing now is to encourage the people to go into micro-finance businesses. If everyone is into business, the economy will move even how small the volume is. There would be more trading, and that means, more money will circulate giving hope for every Filipino.

TONZI post #228
Seriously speaking, watching the numbers of poverty ratio, inflation rate, unemployment rate, budget deficit, migration rate and "brain-drain" phenomena should be duly acted on by the government, the president should not just command her "money-fed" advisers. These advisers should tell her the numbers and the situation too.

Blame the simbahang katoliko as well. .. They always oppose to family planning methods, despite that our country has already more than 90 million people...

hindi mo rin ba naisip na in 2020 ma outnumber ng mga muslims ang mga christians pag nag family planning sila? can u picture out the scenario?

= My understanding on what you wrote is that the government shouldn’t implement the family planning method because when they do, the growth rate of Christian population would slow down whilst the growth rate of our Muslim brothers would continue to grow at a fast rate. In short, you were saying that the government is only implementing the law to Christian Filipinos, were you not? Thus I answered:

Pinoy vies for Guinness, hopes to circle the globe on kayak
MARLON LUISTRO, GMANews.TV
05/28/2009

A Batangueño has left his province on Wednesday morning hoping to set a Guinness World record being the first man to travel across the world using a kayak.

Ronnelito Paring, 37, began his journey at the Calumpang River in Batangas City about 11:10 a.m. Wednesday and will pass along the island provinces of Mindoro and Palawan.

In an interview with GMANews.TV, Paring said that he expects to reach the southwest nation of Brunei "within a month."

"I’m not for fame or for fortune. I’m doing this simply because I wanted to raise funds for the Badjao community [in Batangas City] and send them to school," said Paring, a former seafarer.

He added that he wants to generate funds to help the pastors of the Baptist Church in evangelizing as the Filipinos "are starting to lose their moral values."

Paring, a native of Iligan City, Lanao del Norte and now resident of Batangas City, said it was part of his childhood dream to navigate the world by paddling a boat.

He said that GMA 7’s Wish Ko Lang gave him a chance to accomplish his dream by awarding him a free kayak last month.

He also received and other navigating equipment such as solar charger and global positioning system.

In his three-year tour, Paring will travel across the Asian countries of Brunei, Singapore, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India.

He will also pass by the Middle East countries namely Oman, Yemen, Egypt and Israel and other countries located in Africa, Europe and South America.

Paring, a graduate of Associate of Marine Transportation in Lyceum of the Philippines University – Batangas, said he expects to return to the Philippines by 2012.

Several Filipinos have held various Guiness titles in the past. At least one Filipina, Grace Gupana, holds two world records.

Lanao Norte officials visit Boracay under dev't cooperation program

Boracay, Aklan (25 May) -- Municipal and barangay officials from the towns of Kapatagan and Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND) traveled to world-renowned Boracay island to see firsthand the varied programs implemented by its Local Government Unit (LGU).

The 88-man contingent from Lanao del Norte is the first group to benefit from the Development and Cooperation Program jointly implemented by 2nd District Representative Abdullah Dimaporo and Governor Mohamad Khalid Dimaporo.

"The barangay captains really learned a lot from this trip. We are thankful to the Dimaporos for bringing the group to this beautiful island", expressed Kapatagan Vice-Mayor Perlito Gonzaga.

The DC contingent visited the Materials Recovery Facility of Boracay where segregated garbage collected from hotels, resorts and local homes are recycled into various high-value products like floor tiles, and plastic pellets.

"This experience is an eye-opener for us. There is really money in garbage", said SND ABC President Genesis Tura.

During their 4-day visit in Boracay, the officials were exposed to various programs and projects implemented on the following areas: peace and order, health and sanitation, environmental protection and tourism.

"We would like to share our vision of a creating our own "Boracay" in Lanao del Norte. We have a very beautiful Pigkalawag beach in SND and if properly managed it could rival the best beaches in the country", explained Governor Dimaporo.

Accompanying the Lanao Norte contingent were Provincial Information Officer Lyndon Calica, Kapatagan Mayor Benjie Baguio, Kapatagan Vice-Mayor Perlito Gonzaga, SND Vice-Mayor Ronda Maruhom and some provincial support staff.

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (25 May) -- More than 500 young delegates of the National Pentecostal Royal Youth (NPRY) from various parts of the country converged in the sprawling Mindanao Civic Center for their 45th Annual Convention.

"The primary objective of this activity is to refocus the attention of today's generation to the thing that matters most – and that is our relationship with God. 9 districts participated in the annual camp that represent the cities of Cotabato, Tacurong, Davao, General Santos, Dipolog; the provinces of North Cotabato, Sarangani, Lanao del Norte; and the regions of Caraga, central Visayas and northern Luzon.

According to 1st District Board Member Robert Matalines,"after the successful holding of the 45th NPRY convention these delegates will now become active promoters of the province in their respective localities in proclaiming the beauty and bounty of Lanao del Norte".

RDC-10 sees more progress for Northern Mindanao

(28 May) -- "More investments will pour in to spur more development for Northern Mindanao."

This is the statement of Regional Development Council (RDC) Region 10 Chairperson Governor Jurdin Jesus M. Romualdo of Camiguin as he welcomed the RDC members and guests who convened for the 2nd quarter during the 82nd RDC full council meeting at the Camiguin Convention Center, Mambajao, Camiguin.

A positive regional outlook, notwithstanding, Gov. Romualdo stressed the importance of providing more employment opportunities to increase incomes and improve living conditions in these challenging times.

Social Security System (SSS) President Romulo L Neri who is also the Cabinet Officer for Regional Development (CORD) for Northern Mindanao as well as Comprehensive Livelihood and Emergency Employment Program (CLEEP) Steward amplified on the global economic crisis, saying that the impact is more evident among poor countries in terms of fall in commodity prices, collapse of employment and drying up of capital flows.

On the other hand, Presidential Assistant for Northern Mindanao (PANM) Pacifico T. Pupos, Jr., reported on the status of implementation of the CLEEP in the region.

Pupos said as of April 2009, a total of 20, 522 jobs have been generated, which was quite short of target.

He also stressed the need to intensify the CLEEP project field monitoring and submission of progress reports.

Still on employment generation, the council enjoined all agencies and Local Government Units (LGUs) to give full support to the series of Jobs and Livelihood Fair to be carried out on June 11-14, 2009 simultaneously with the 2009 Independence Day celebration.

The Department of Labor and Employment Region 10 (DOLE-10)-led activity will provide employment opportunities, especially to those affected by the economic slowdown.

The council endorsed the 2010 Priority Programs and Projects of the regional line agencies to their respective central offices.

The Integrity Development Action Plan (IDAP), the national anti-corruption framework of the executive branch and the President's program of countering corruption, was endorsed for adoption by member agencies and local government units.

RDC-10 endorsed the USAID-supported Local Implementation of National Competitiveness for Economic Growth (LINC-EG) Project).

The four-year project aims to improve economic governance that is essential for investment start-up, economic growth, competitiveness and poverty reduction, through policy reforms.

The body furthermore endorsed for implementation by agencies and NGOs concerned the Terms of Reference for the formulation of the Regional Human Rights Action Plan (RHRAP) 2009-2015.

The TOR called for a three-day planning workshop and organization of a committee to fast track implementation of AO 163 and 249, as well as to monitor compliance with the country's commitments to eight international core treaties on human rights.

The following projects and activities were also approved and endorsed by the council: the proposed strategic partnership between RDC-10 and the Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC) in Region 10, the implementation of Executive Order (EO) No. 437 or the Community-Based Rehabilitation (CBR) of Persons with Disabilities in the Philippines, and the proposed widening/upgrading of the Iligan-Cagayan de Oro-Butuan Road.

Friday, 29 May 2009

(mta)

Where do you think is the best place for an IT Park here in Iligan? :)

I think around 2-4 hectares of land is good enough. For me, Tubod, Tambacan, Saray-Tibanga, Santiago or Hinaplanon ang pwede. Trabaho kasi yan ng Iligan City Information and Communications Technology Council (ICICTC) to locate the most viable space to put up an IT park in the city.

So, let me help you brush up on (the flow of) our conversation.

RML post #227
The best solution to the economic problem that we're facing now is to encourage the people to go into micro-finance businesses. If everyone is into business, the economy will move even how small the volume is. There would be more trading, and that means, more money will circulate giving hope for every Filipino.

TONZI post #228
Seriously speaking, watching the numbers of poverty ratio, inflation rate, unemployment rate, budget deficit, migration rate and "brain-drain" phenomena should be duly acted on by the government, the president should not just command her "money-fed" advisers. These advisers should tell her the numbers and the situation too.

RML: #229
Blame the simbahang katoliko as well. .. They always oppose to family planning methods, despite that our country has already more than 90 million people...

Then you barged in and spouted:

kikoKICKS #242
hindi mo rin ba naisip na in 2020 ma outnumber ng mga muslims ang mga christians pag nag family planning sila? can u picture out the scenario?

= My understanding on what you wrote is that the government shouldn’t implement the family planning method because when they do, the growth rate of Christian population would slow down whilst the growth rate of our Muslim brothers would continue to grow at a fast rate. In short, you were saying that the government is only implementing the law to Christian Filipinos, were you not? Thus I answered:

RML post# 283
Did I say the government's family planning program is exclusively implemented to Christians?

Then you latest response:
government? i remember u said simbahang catoliko. and the priests there are hypocrites coz they are against the FP.

Sorry; looks your memory fails.

May I ask, what have the Roman Catholic Church recommended as a viable solution to the said over population problem?

The Roman Catholics firm belief in life and their commitment to stand up for life. Discipline and Self-control for married couple.

Iligan aims to become Northern Mindanao’s ICT hub

ILIGAN CITY — Local officials are optimistic this city could be Northern Mindanao’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) hub in the coming years. The projection is anchored in the expected accreditation of a 4.6-hectare property of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) into an Information and Communications Technology park within the year. City mayor Lawrence L. Cruz said 4,000 square meters of work area was readily available. "This is a bold ambition... but it is very doable," he said. Firms locating in an ICT park accredited through the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) enjoy certain perks in addition to those granted by the Board of Investments and the city government. In Northern Mindanao, only Cagayan de Oro City’s Pueblo de Oro ICT park is accredited by PEZA. On Thursday, two business process outsourcing (BPO) companies formally announced their commitment to open facilities in this city next month. Mr. Cruz led the ceremonial signing of two memoranda of agreement between MSU-IIT and the Davao City-based Hubport Group Inc., and Cyber City Teleservices Co. Chancellor Marcelo P. Salazar of MSU-IIT said that the agreement with the two BPOs could be replicated in the future. Based on ICT industry sources, there are now over 20 BPOs operating in Davao City including seven major call centers employing at least 3,000 agents. — Geefe P. Alba

USAid push English proficiency project
Friday, May 29, 2009

SIX of Mindanao’s universities are partnering with USAID’s Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program to improve the employability of the next generation of Mindanao graduates by expanding and enhancing the English language training capabilities of these universities.

GEM’s Job Enabling English Proficiency (JEEP) Project is designed to turn out graduates with the English language skills needed for productive employment in careers requiring reasonable proficiency in the language.

The six universities which have jointly launched JEEP are: Mindanao State University-Marawi, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (Iligan), Capitol University (Cagayan de Oro), Western Mindanao State University (Cagayan de Oro), Bukidnon State University (Malaybalay, Bukidnon), and Zamboanga State College of Marine Science and Technology (Zamboanga City).

The JEEP Project will ultimately be implemented in 20 or more colleges and universities in Mindanao through partnerships between these institutions and the GEM Program, under the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council. JEEP consists of a two-year group of courses offered to qualifying college students. The first course, known as ?JEEP-Start, is a one-year program offered as an elective to third year college students. It develops advanced General English skills through computer-assisted instruction supported by classroom extension. After successfully completing the first course, the students, now in their fourth year, may enroll in “JEEP-Accelerate”, another one-year course, which is taught through a classroom-based speech lab and internet-based learning. JEEP-Accelerate is intended to equip students with the specific English skills needed for jobs in such sectors as business process outsourcing, tourism, nursing, allied health services or the maritime industry.

It will prepare students to take international English tests as the gateway to overseas employment in these sectors.

Among the other GEM Program projects designed to prepare Mindanao’s future workforce for the global economy are its Computer Literacy and Internet Connection (CLIC) project, and its Education Awareness Support Effort (Ease).

The CLIC project has to date provided 4,750 internet-connected computers to 800 schools, and Ease has provided educational matching grants to help parent-teacher community associations establish mini-libraries, science laboratories or multimedia centers in 690 schools, in conflict-affected areas in Mindanao.

Sari-sari store must also grow same with cottage industry nga mga compania. I've been in business for more than 30 years and as a local producer/manufacturer in Iligan for about 10 years , ma-o nga makasulti ko sa problema sa cottage industria nga negosyo deri sa Iligan. Ang owner ana nga property before was NSC but I do believe nga wala nasiya ma-apil ug baligya to Global Steel, needs to be check sa atong RD office for ownership. This is good area for the "Philippine Economic Zone Authority" - Iligan City, the best person ani nga nakahibalo was a former NSC official now a City Councilor sa Iligan (OM). If Iligan City Government mataga-an ug authority to develop said area ug charter by PEZA then daghan ka-ayong mga Investors moanhi sa Iligan because of the Incintivo sa mga compania nga na-a mahimutang sa PEZA authorize areas.

500 teachers vs principal!
By: Joe Arpon Guaniezo

AS far as 500 teachers are concerned, principal Abundio Saabedra Jr. is a major flunker and should be kicked out of school. They claimed that he had dumped his wife for a mistress whom he reportedly allowed to live in his office at the Iligan City National High School.

A Bombo Radyo report revealed that the 500 teachers of the Iligan City National High School have been staging a protest action against Saabedra Jr. for a week now. The complainants claimed that the principal has failed to remit their GSIS premiums. He also has allegedly abandoned his wife for another woman. The supposed mistress now reportedly lives at the principal’s office.

Saabedra was reportedly slapped with a 90-day preventive suspension for his supposedly immoral acts.

Meanwhile, Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Cruz expressed alarm that the Iligan City National High School won’t be opening classes on June 1 due to the controversy. On this note, he urged Department of Education Regional 10 Director Estrella Babano to make the necessary steps to solve the problem.

Cruz also asked Bombo Radyo Cagayan de Oro to tackle the issue.

Ang requirement sa PEZA for IT Park outside outside Metro Manila, ma-o ni: 1. For Buildings it should not be less than 5000 sq. meters and 2. Area for Development, not less than 5 hectares or 50,000 sq. meters.

Okay; I'll forget for awhile that you first attacked me, so i'll try to be civil with you now.

Bamboo, a businessman for more than 30 years, I'd like to know why do you think the Philippines must compete with China in the export industry when we're still discussing micro-finance businesses on here? Do you think competing with China is the solution to our despicable economic state?

Remember that my proposal was to encourage more Filipinos to get into micro-finance industry, so that in turn, more people would earn, as any minor push on the flow of the economy would prong a domino effect extending the resources to the heel. Given the current state that most Filipinos lack resources to fund businesses, why would the average Filipino businessman think of exporting when he's not even proven his niche locally? Let's see if your 30-year experience as a businessman would vindicate your -what to me --a skewed idea. :naughty:

Friday, 29 May 2009

“A dream come true!”

:applause:

Nahuli man ito at lahat, naabutan man ng crises, etc, hahabol pa din.

Good job, mayor Cruz. Maraming makikinabang dito.

Isa pa, mayor, at sasaludo na ako sayo. :)

IMO, the Philippines cannot compete with China especially in terms of scale. China has long been "mass producing" almost all aspects of products and bi-products. With their big population and below average wage in the manufacturing sector, they are able to lower the prices even more of their mass produced products. And, they also "consume" their products over those internationally known products. Now, in the Philippine situation, we are not that mass-producing yet given the market share locally and we prefer "imported" over locally made products. China, on the other hand, is already sufficient in its local market and when they opened their market internationally they are more than ready to do that.

In the case of the PHilippines, since our economy is even dependent on agriculture up to now, we need to be sufficient on our local market by buying Filipino products just like what South Korea and Japan did when their economies were just starting to grow. South Korea for example followed Japan's system which is to buy their own products before foreign produced products which resulted to the familiarity of the world of their locally produced cars and electronic products. We opened our market internationally without the people supporting locally made products yet. And what happens? our local producers got swarmed, overshadowed, and outnumbered by those low-priced, low-quality international products.

I'm not saying that we neglect products from abroad but we need to endorse and support our own product in order for our local businessmen to benefit and for our local workers who work in these manufacturing companies as well as the companies that supply bi-products to the manufacturing companies that produce local brands. With this kind of set-up we are already reviving an industry of our own and thereby opening the eyes of the world into Filipino made products that are already tested locally and ready to be sold internationally. We cannot just make a product and sell it to other countries without its quality being tested first by us. And with the opening of the Philippines to international market, our local producers were not that strong yet to counteract with those low priced, mass produced products especially from China.

We need to support our products and recognize that it can be the key to the progress of our fellow countrymen and the Philippines.

Look at Aboitiz, they are producing "catamaran" haul type of boats which are popularly known as locally as "supercat" or "waterjet" type of boats which are used in fast ferry services. But the problem is, a lot of our local companies still prefer "2nd hand" imported catamarans from abroad. But international buyers order those boats from Aboitiz. And the problem plaguing Aboitiz? The manpower that they produced through company funded trainings leave the company once they find a lucrative offer from even bigger shipbuilding companies abroad. Now, how can we have a sufficient market internationally when we do not even support our own product?
