Last year I paid 1500 from Lumbia airport to Iligan and about 6 months later paid 2000. I would be interested in knowing what you have to pay this year.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/IMG_5945.jpg

After 22 hours of air travel, 5 Airports, and if you calculate the time zones, 2 days travel half way around the world, when I finally got off the plane at Lumbia Airport in Cagayan De Oro I just wanted the fastest and most direct way to get to Iligan City. I just couldn't wait any longer to get to Jollibee, Tibanga. A place I first learned about right here on SSC-Iligan.

Would you go half way around the world for a Hamburger ? I did ( LOL )

I plan to travel from cagayan to iligan and prefer to take a taxi. could anyone indicate a normal fare for a taxt going from the airport into the city of iligan
thanks appreciate the feedback

hi. if you have the budget you can take taxi but if youdont have you can take a bus. Its cheaper and its very exciting and the experience would be incomparable...paying 1500 to 2000 would be too much.

much cheaper if would take taxi from Lumbia Airport to Bulua Bus terminal.. (I think Php 30 is the flag down rate of taxi).. then take bus either from Rural Transit or Super 5 aircon bus to Iligan... the ticket cost 80 pesos only..

I dont know lang ha, coz im not sure as i only overheard this from one of their sales persons but it seems that they have a branch in Tacloban. They said nga mas "lucrative" daw diri sa Iligan and Normin for PCs. That was according to somebody from there when I bought PCs there. I think si cyberwizard is one of the partners of this pc sales store.

Committee on Planning sa SP, mipahigayon og Public Hearing kalabot sa Gerona Proporals

Monday, 22 June 2009

(mta)

not just the ferry actually almost all access to iligan either by ferry or by air you would always see the word "via" either CDO or Ozamis.it's sad because other cities are very accessible.we have a very nice port in iligan but we only get 1 ship average every other day.we have an airport which do not operate.actually other cities are taking credit for us in terms of accessibility.like example somebody would ask how do we get to iligan, obviously we'll say just take a plane via CDO or Ozamis then a bus ride to iligan.it's even in the phone directory how to get to iligan.:ohno:

I think it's not really becoz we are treated as a second class city. From the 1990s Asian financial crisis wala pa kaayo ka bounce back atong industries sa Iligan. Global Steel is still in debt trouble even after years of opening and the other plants are still recovering. Iligan's economy is heavy industrial based and with the world crisis at this moment, I think our industries are also affected too. This is one problem of not hosting several types of industries.

Our city needs to provide land for light to medium industrial zones so that companies will be able to locate their businesses. Food industries are one of those light to medium industries that are capable of hurdling any crisis. I hope our city council of Iligan will consider a good parcel of land for light to medium industries.

But before industries can come, Mindanao should ask for energy/power projects to support other industries that may come in. With Hanjin looming to come back to Mis Or, our power support may be put on the red line already which means we will need new power sources for the whole Mindanao.

I suggest our officials to play SIM CITY 4 so they may know the necessary pre-requisites of every sector that a city or place may host.

To me it is amazing because it represents a place in the world I had never known much about before I accidentially websurfed my way into Iligan a few years ago. Prior to that I never realized how someone could learn so much about a place ( Iligan City ) in such great detail, as I did right here on my pc. Even more amazing was the fact there are so many people that live in Iligan took the time, effort and in some cases expense putting so much about their city on the internet for the rest of the world to see, hear and watch.

Many of the things you take for granted, see and do every day are commonplace to you but they are not to someone who has never seen or experienced them before.

There is an interesting mix of things in Iligan such as natural beauty, Industry, many small independently owned and operated stores and shops which to me, give a place like Iligan City a character all of its own. Food and Dining of all kinds from the simplicity of sidewalk vendors to excellent fine dining and everything in between.

The archetecture of some of the buildings, some in just plain concrete, others in brilliant freshly painted color(s). The many forms of public transportation I had never known about before such as Jeepneys, Calesa, the tricycles for hire.

The amount and various types of Educational facilities in Iligan for a city of that size to me is quite extraordinary. I consider myself fortunate that I was able to freely tour some of them and there are a few more I will tour in the future. The " tropicalized " buildings themselves, the first time I had ever seen something like that impressed me.

Although I live in New York, there is a lot more to New York ( State ) than just New York City. I live more in the country than the city itself and I don't consider myself a " City " type person. Iligan is just enough " city " for me concerning the size of it. You can be in the " Downtown " ( city proper ) part of Iligan and in just a short amount of time by car, taxi or Jeepney find yourself in a resort like Timoga all natural spring fed pools, hike down the stairs to one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen, Tinago Falls and many similar places.

One day I spent a considerable amount of time looking at pics right here on SSC-Iligan of Jollibee on Tibanga Highway. That place just intrigued me. Most people in the USA never heard of Jollibee, including myself up to that point. The colors on the building, some of the shapes of the ornimntation on the exterior, the tall telescopic mast with the illuminated logo on the top of it. Even the corner location. I thought to myself " I wonder what it would be like sitting in there, eating burgers and watching the Jeepneys, Tricycles and people go by in a comparitively tiny spec ( on a world map ) half way around the world from where I live. That gave me the idea that maybe I really could do that and about a year and a half later I really did ! To me, that is something amazing !

Looking at Iligan City on the " Google Earth " satellite images gave a colorful view of rooftops in the city surrounded by mountains on one side with Iligan Bay on the other. That is a great geographical combination !

Some people here, even some Filipino people told me I was crazy to go to Iligan City but those with the " less than Amazing " comments had never been there themselves. They could not even figure out how I knew so much about the place. I made careful preparations down to the slightest detal based on many of these things, Americans that live in Mindanao gave Iligan a favorable review and some people might find that Amazing as well !

I believe in the last thread someone put a similar type of question to me as to my interest in Iligan, if you backtrack you may find all 5 parts of it for your further reading. amusement and amazement.

I will attempt to summarize by saying that Iligan combines or holds onto its past while existing in the present while step by step forging its way to the future, without totally discarding its past individuality and character. I have seen it here in my part of the world more than once where a city goes through " Urban Renewal " where block by block everything is torn down and demolished and replaced with new. New is fine but when a place looses its character and individuality that can be quite a loss.

I don't want to make a big list here, but if you take the time and make yourself a list of everything Iligan has, and everything it has going for it you too might be amazed, maybe it depends on what part of the world you are looking at Iligan City from ! It may in its entirety not be a " perfect " place but can you tell me any place that really is ?

Take a good look at a map of Mindanao, take a good look or, try to look at it as a foriegner from another part of the world and it might indicate to you how I recently came up with another conclusion that Iligan City is " A Shining Star in Mindanao " as well as a some of the other cities.

Lots of great things happening in Iligan, I read about many of them right here on SSC-Iligan. Maybe the rest of the world just does not know about the existance of Iligan City, after all, it was only by accident that I found it. I have visited England many times in the past, and I am sure you know of the " Royalty " of the country of England. I never felt as though I got a " Royal " welcome when I went there in the true sense of the word, and I never expected it. If you knew all of the details of my visits to Iligan City, in my own way I did feel as though I had received a Royal Welcome there. When I have related some of my experiences of going to Iligan to my friends and acquaintences here, they can hardly believe it although they know I just can't make those kind of things up and I have many many pictures to show.

Yes, I really did go half way around the world for a Hamburger at Jollibee, Tibanga and...............a whole lot more ! One thing I do know for certain, there really is a lot of truth behind something I have read many times in many places " The Warmth and Hospitality of The Iliganons "

we are one of the cities in mindanao that is not that fast and convenient to visit in terms of access.we are almost the same as Gingoog City the only access to that place when coming from the capital Manila is by plane via CDO/Butuan or by ferry also via the same cities i mentioned.and this is not a good sign actually.for me CDO has good leverage in terms of business and tourism coz they're really accessible and they serve as the gateway to Iligan and other places which have limited access.so they usually take the credit actually.although Iligan is not considered as a secondary city but if we go like this in the next 5-10years then it's not that good anymore.i think the local govt.has to do something on this matter.i guess it would be wise for them to invite more shipping operators, airline companies to have iligan as one of their primary routes.wa have a very nice port actually, way better than CDO/Ozamis,they should maximize the capacity of the port and the dormant airport i think it's time to reactivate this one no matter Laguindingan is underway,Marawi/Iligan have a good number of pax output....:)my hats off to mr.Bob of New York, seldom i hear people who admires our city with great love and passion.i've been in New York many times too,and the scenery is very opposite here in Iligan, where we live in a simple lifestyle...the only thing Iligan is worried about is some annoying disturbance from terrorist who seems to disrupt the peace and order which turned to be bad.:ohno:

Bob, you were robbed, obviously. Taxi fares don't usually go over P1,800 from Lumbia Airport to Iligan City, unless you're a foreigner. lol

Ask someone to negotiate for you when you're coming alone next time. (Your negotiator should be Pinoy who's from the area and who's loyalty is with you.) lol

Alternatively, pm me when you're coming again. I may be able to arrange a private car to pick you up at the airport and bring you to Iligan, with a minimal fee. :)

Would you go half way around the world for a Hamburger ? I did ( LOL )

Well, I remember that I once insisted to my friends that we should go to this particular bar in Oklahoma City when I was in the States because I've heard from a college pal who's been going back and forth to the States that this particular bar is the dirtiest that he has ever been to. We found out that all customers of the bar were served peanuts, and nut shells are thrown to the floor instead of keeping them on a plate to avoid mess.

It was a very unique experience to have gone to a bar like that, tbh. lol

At least, Jollibee is super clean.

^^ the state of Iligan City in comparison with the other cities in Mindanao particularly Davao, CdeO and Gen San. Indeed we are falling behind in terms of commercial expansion and economy. Although this may be a sad reality but let us come into thinking too that not all cities in the Philippines should become another CdeO, Davao or Cebu. Any place or state in the world would also need to realize that each region in each country would be put into a balanced state so as each and every city or municipality would be "complementing" each other rather than "competing" against each other.

That is why, if you notice that each of the 50 states of the U.S., there is a "state capital", "commercial center", "transport hub", "industrial hub", "entertainment city" and so on and so fort. It is such that in a way, each city in a state would not "kill" another city just to grab "commercial/industrial market" from each other. Although, it is not prescribed that each city should not kill each other but such situation would be a great factor in putting "equilibrium" in each city/municipality in every state.

Would you want each and every city in the Mindanao or that of the whole Philippines to just kill each other just for the sake of being called "first city" rather than "2nd city" ? I dont think anybody would want that to happen here. What I'm pointing out is that we should not be too critical on such because it would either "kill" another city or "kill both" cities.

For me, I am satisfied of Iligan's being what is now rather than thinking of it as another commercial center full of vices and other petty crimes. I would rather have it as it is being "ecological" and at the same time a bit modern in a balanced way. Although, I admit that I also love my city to progress too but let us take each and every step easily as building an economy doesn't take just a single day to do. There are lots of prerequisites for commercial/industrial success of each and every city and there are also factorswhy we are lagging behind in transportation sorties of shipping companies. Perhaps, we do not know that the fees at our PPA Iligan is getting more expensive than that of Ozamiz or CdeO. Or perhaps, the docking fees are getting a bit more pricier too. There are many factors that can be pointed out why there are more boats in Ozamiz or CdeO than Iligan. And, such factor is just out of the city LGU's jurisdiction.

For us to become too "eager" for our cities development is natural and sometimes, I am like that too. I am too ecstatic that our city should be like this or like that but as we take each and every day living in our city, I realize that it is not such an easy job being a mayor or city administrator as wanting to give the city's citizens demands is not easy given the pre-requisites that a government should do first to enable or "stimulate" economic, commercial and industrial success.

Corporate News
New Figaro management sets expansion
THE NEW management of Figaro Coffee Co. is hiking the number of its coffee shops, as well as increasing product offerings to extend its reach outside its primary market.

Mel Verano, chairman of the coffee chain’s executive committee, told reporters yesterday that by the end of this quarter, outlets are expected to open in Iligan City :cheers:and at McKinley Hill in Bonifacio Global City. The company is also in talks with the Gaisano Group, and expects to open 10 to 20 outlets in the Gaisano Malls by the end of the year.

The brand currently has 30 corporate-owned stores, mostly located in Metro Manila, and 40 franchise stores, five of which are found in the provinces: Cebu, Iloilo, Davao, Zamboanga, and Cagayan de Oro.

For now, expansion is limited to the Philippines, with outlets in Hong Kong and Dubai had already been closed. An outlet in China is in "suspended animation," as there is some debate regarding its ownership, executives said.

A "full store" franchise costs P6.5 million to set up, a kiosk P4.2 million, and a trolley or cart, around P500,000. The standard size for a full store is 60 to 70 square meters. There are 100-square-meter stores with private function rooms located in business districts.

Provided it is "properly located and properly run," the return on investment for a new Figaro outlet is expected to come in approximately three to four years, or a conservative five years, Mr. Verano said. Five percent of profits are paid to the company as royalties, with an additional 2% for marketing initiatives. The rest belongs to the franchisee.

Mr. Verano said he and his business partner of 25 years, Gerry Liu of Cirtek Electronics Corp. and Domino’s Pizza, came in to fill the breach when a minority group headed by former chief executive officer Pacita Juan and eight key executives resigned.

While Ms. Juan can be credited for building up the Figaro brand, it is now the new management’s focus to move forward, develop faster, and foster a "progressive" and "dynamic" environment for its franchisees and 250 employees.

"Our group will never allow Figaro to be dissolved. One thing we’re doing now is trying to pay off our past dues and try to make more money," Mr. Verano said.

"Our basic philosophy is still to use locally produced coffee from local farming cooperatives. In fact, we have a foundation that is gearing cooperatives to make their farmers turn to organic farming. We’re also considering bringing in a roaster to the Mt. Province, so that the cooperative will be able to roast the coffee there instead of having to bring the beans down to Manila and back," he added.

Among the changes made by the new management is selling full meals (inclusive of salad with two kinds of sauces, one’s choice among five kinds of pasta, a main course, and an iced tea or iced coffee) under P199, aimed at young professionals especially the lunch crowd from call centers, and students.

While the coffee chain originally catered to the "A" and "B" market and professionals aged 30 and above, it is now looking for ways to entice the "C" market and younger crowd.

Non-coffee favorites tailored for this crowd include the fruit-based Summer Frost drinks (P125 for 16 oz.) and pastry products like My Little Oscar sansrival, pudding, and chocolate cake. — Johanna D. Poblete

Any place or state in the world would also need to realize that each region in each country would be put into a balanced state so as each and every city or municipality would be "complementing" each other rather than "competing" against each other.

i guess iligan city is the sick man of the philippines..like the philippines before was the sick man of asia....:ohno::nuts::ohno:

[QUOTE=RML;38769136]Bob, you were robbed, obviously.

On both visits, transportation from Lumbia Airport to Iligan was arranged for me by Filipinos. The first visit was more of a private car service which also transported my Iligan Entourage. The second visit was a regular commercial taxi ( as shown in the pic ) also arranged for me by Filipino. The taxi had myself and two Filipino passengers ( friends from Iligan ) which I dont know if that had a bearing on the bottom line price which if I remember, included the tip. I believe that was also around the time of higher gasoline prices and that may have had increased the price as well. It might be interesting to get some price quotes from a few taxi and car service operators to compare prices.

You comment that taxi fare from Lumbia Airport to Iligan should not go over 1800 peso. If I paid 2000 peso, that is a 200 peso difference, about 4 US Dollars or so and you can not buy much here for $4 .

Now for a comparison, for me to get to JFK International Airport from my house, about the same distance as from Lumbia Airport to Iligan by car service ( and a taxi is not much cheaper ) one way, cost me the equivalent of about 9000 to 10,000 peso ( depending on the precise exchange rate ). By comparison, if I was overcharged by paying 2000 peso instead of 1800 peso for a taxi from Lumbia to Iligan the difference would not have been much more than what could be considered " pocket Change " here in the USA. The taxi got myself, my Iliganon friends and my luggage convieniently and comfortably from Lumbia to Iligan and at the time that was most important to me. I do thank you very much for your input on this though.

What I have been thinking about lately, for a future visit might be to take a bus from CDO to Iligan. From what I have been reading recently that could be a real adventure in itself ! Additionally after seeing pictures here in SSC-Iligan of both Iligan bus terminals it would give me a chance to see one of them as well. It is not so much the cost factor of taking a bus instead of a taxi but more for an experience and to see one of the Iligan Bus terminals. The one I remember from the pics I saw here I believe has a Dunkin Doughnuts in it.

Glad you had " an experience " while visiting the USA of a bar with people dropping peanut shells on the floor. Of course not every place is like that but it will always give you sometning to remember !

Yes, I would agree with you about the cleanliness of Jollibee. I have been to both of them in Iligan ( the one at the mall was not quite open on my last visit ) . I have also been to 4 of them in CDO and have found them all similar in that respect, as I have commented about many times. Best " fully equipped " and " Fully Functional " CR's too out many of the public dining, drinking, and entertainment places I visited. From my experiences so far and in my opinion Jollibee not only meets world competition from franchises like McDonalds, Burger King, Pizza Hut etc. Jollibee actually Beats them in many ways although at times so subtle it may go unnoticed by many people.

Just so you know, I've tried what Starbucks, Seattle's Best, Blendz, and a few other hip and not-so hip coffee places offer and all of them have their own best sellers. Hi All,

Last time I was in Iligan 2 years ago, my wife & I paid 2000Php for the taxi ride from the airport at CDO to Iligan.... BUT as Bob say's that's still cheap! from what I could tell it was about 110km, for the same distance here in New Zealand would be close to 10,000Php!

I think Iligan would have a lot more tourists if it was easier to get there, right now you have to fly into CDO or ferry to Iligan, if your on a holiday of 2 or 3 weeks you don't want to be spending 12 hours on a ferry even if it's over night! flying into CDO is Ok, but then you have about another 2 hours in a taxi which isn't fun! first time I did it it was after we landed last flight in CDO and all I wanted to do was rest, didn't help that I got car sick on the taxi ride too.

This time when we came to see the family in September we fly into CDO early so we can travel to Iligan in daylight, also means we can have the afternoon to catch up with people and we only waste half a day in traveling.

I'm like Bob, Iligan IS AMAZING! maybe I find it amazing because it's so much difference to what I'm use too, but when you do step back and have a good look you see that Iligan has SO much going for it and has so much potential for it future! I see that, I see that so much that my wife (she's from Ilgian) & myself are buying some land!

Now a question, why is it that the price of things goes up the moment a foreigner is seen? the number of times I was hidden round a corner with the family will my wife went and got a price for something was amazing... like our wedding venue, soon as I was seen by them they tried putting the price by a huge amount!

Iligan City ----> The place you can always call home!

Mr. BobNewYorkUSA is right. and what I like best about the city is the 'convenience' it provides. When I like to go shopping, it's just a walking distance from my home. Like also when i need to cool off for the spring pools, there's no need to plan a week ahead coz its just one ride away from the city proper! Talk about being spontaneous...Whenever i go to to buy something, all i do is walk and walk because i just love the small establishments side side!

Iligan City is like a very giant mall for me, if you get what i mean. The setup is very like inside the mall, it is just open.

This is true. A lot of Starbucks outlets actually thousands in the US have shut down. We should not be too overwhelmed by Starbucks as we have our own coffee industry. Starbucks is a manifestation of the American coffee culture which we Filipinos only borrowed from the Americans. Emulating that culture would be difficult as opposed to the "pan de sal-sawsaw-kape" culture of ours. The American coffee culture is so deep that it enabled Starbucks to evolve the American coffee culture to a new level which is way too far from that of ours.

Iligan City ----> The place you can always call home!

Actually, a lot of our countrymen from Luzon and Manila prefer Iligan City's consumer convenience and accessibility. They said where in the Philippines would you find a city where you can shop and go to the market place with just 20 to 30 pesos as fare round trip? They said they only find that here in Iligan. A neighbor also told that he studied in Davao City during his high school and he said that a 50 peso bill won't be enough for you just to window shop. With it, you can only go single ride to your destination one-way. He was amazed to be here coz Iligan City's size is just enough for their family.

Although we are not as developed as the other major cities in the Philippines, we are even lucky with this advantage. Let us just hope that somehow, in a few years time, Iligan would be able to support the employment needs of its graduates which is more important than having a lot of malls and other commercial development. Of course, when employment rate is high to support the needs of our local community, then nationally-recognized malls will see the "purchasing power" as an advantage for their businesses and in turn, shipping lines will reconsider our city as one of their main destinations. But for now, let us rebuild our city through employment opportunities. This is, first and foremost, the key to progress.

Philippine vinegar brand now a world-class export product
Thursday, 25 June 2009

ILIGAN CITY — Sour and acidic, the local vinegar is not particularly fancy or difficult to make.

No Filipino kitchen is complete without this sour pale liquid often made of fermented coconut water. Suka is the condiment Filipinos can’t live without.

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/employee/Adisory/products.jpg

It is for this reason that an entrepreneur from Iligan City, Rene Stuart del Rosario, tried his hand at this business.

At the time, Mr. Del Rosario was broke but needed to undergo a bypass operation. Since he needed money, he sold off most of his possessions.

With his wife and P28,000 in capital, he started his business in 2000 with recycled bottles, a vinegar recipe adapted from a local dish, and a whole lot of faith.

Less than a decade later, what started as the last desperate straw of a man in need has become a booming business with a processing plant capable of producing up to 30,000 bottles daily.

The main product of Green Gold Gourmet Corporation is Suka Pinakurat, spiked vinegar inspired by a dish of wild boar meat seasoned with spices and vinegar.

The vinegar is available in the US, Australia, the UK, Canada, Ireland and France.

So how did a dipping sauce become so popular?

"I think as a Cebuano you get intrigued by the name which means ’to be surprised.’ So when you read the label, you think how could something as common and as familiar as suka be surprising?" said Rana Englis, a recent patron of the product who plans to introduce it to her colleagues in Indonesia where she works.

Another fan wrote in a blog post that the sauce was "a world away from the common spiced vinegar. This had body and was not too sour."

Rene del Rosario Jr., Green Gold manager and son of the company’s founder, said that when they first started, they relied solely on word-of-mouth.

"Until recently, we did not do any advertising or marketing for our products at all. We simply approached distributors who were interested in selling our products," he said.

"We were surprised to hear that people bought and brought ou products to Ireland or Canada when we weren’t even exporting yet. Apparently, the balikbayans who discovered us brought some back when they left the Philippines. That’s how Filipinos abroad heard about it," Mr. del Rosario said.

"Now that we’re exporting, our distributors tell us that the foreign market likes it because it’s exotic," he added.

Aside from the spiked vinegar, the company also produces the non-spicy type (Suka Waykurat), sweetened vinegar, vinegar with soy sauce (Kuratsoy), spicy vinegar with soy sauce and calamansi, extra hot chili and garlic (Chigar), spicy pork anchovies (Naprik) extra-hot chili pepper sauce (Kulikot which is a local variety of chili pepper) pure palm wine vinegar, garlic chips and garlic crunch.

"Now we are exploring making vinegar from sugar palm (Kaong) and we’re planning to call it Suka Binugbog," Mr. del Rosario said.

Why the name?

"Well, because you have to bash the tree to collect the sap," he said.

Beyond the company’s success, the Del Rosarios are proud of how the business has been able to help in providing employment for the community.

"Currently, we provide work for around 500 chili and coconut farmers. Aside from them, there are also hundreds who work for us part-time and full-time," Mr. Del Rosario said.

"They man the factory, peel the spices and clean the recycled bottles. I’m very happy that we are able to help by providing them with sustainable livelihoods," he said.

"Not only does the success of Suka Pinakurat give Pinoys another great reason to patronize our own products but it gives further testament that something homegrown can make it big in the global market," said Michelle de Guzman, a Cebu City-based consumer who discovered the vinegar through a friend.

Even with its current success, Mr. Del Rosario said the company could still grow bigger since they have not yet tapped the maximum potential of the local market.

"Who knows, maybe another decade down the road, this could be a billion-peso business," he said.///Bussiness World Online 06/25/09 (Mara Barbra S. Nanaman)

Launching and Unveiling of the Iligan City Government Citizen's Charter Guidebook

Red tape-free government through the Anti-Red Tape Act

Government offices move a step closer to being red tape-free as over 250 agencies have completed their Citizen’s Charters, set up Help Desks and launched anti-fixer measures in compliance with Republic Act No. 9485 or the Anti-Red Tape Act (ARTA) of 2007. This was reported yesterday by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) as it also reminded other public offices that they have only four months left or until September this year to comply with ARTA.

CSC Chair Ricardo L. Saludo pointed out that over half or 60% of the offices which complied with ARTA were local government units from various parts of the country. The Commission also disclosed that model provinces and cities have been identified in each of the regions to showcase best practices in frontline service delivery. These provinces are La Union, Cavite, Camarines Sur, Bohol, Northern Samar, Bukidnon, Cotabato, Agusan del Sur and Maguindanao. The model cities are Candon in Ilocos Sur, Santiago City in Isabela, San Fernando City in Pampanga, Tanauan in Batangas, Legazpi and Tabaco Cities in Albay, Toledo in Cebu as well as Baybay in Leyte, Zamboanga City, Iligan City, Tacurong City and Butuan City.

The Anti-Red Tape Act aims to improve public service specifically frontline services rendered by client-heavy agencies. It applies to all government offices including local government units and government owned and controlled corporations that provide frontline services. With the Act, lengthy procedures, unreasonable paper requirements and padded fees will hopefully be addressed and stopped.

Singing Bee goes to Lanao (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=3&id=4229)
By BONITA ERMAC Updated June 27-28, 2009 12:00 AM

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte – The Singing Bee show will be coming to this province this forthcoming July 1.

Lyndon Calica, provincial information officer, in a press briefing Friday told media regarding the activities concerning the 50th Araw ng Lanao del Norte which will be celebrated this coming June 28 to July 4.

The Singing Bee show of ABS-CBN with host Cesar Montano, the band and the dancers are all coming on July 1, and the participants of this show will be the provincial employees only, said Calica.

The Singing Bee is just one of the highlights lined up for this momentous event. Others are the trade fair and OTOP (One Town-One Product) day; the fluvial parade, bangus festival, the presentation of the candidates of Miss Lanao del Norte which will be held on Environment Day, June 28.

They have their sports day on July 29, to include the cheerdance and hiphop competition, inter municipal tournament, Philta tournament and the 1st Governor’s Fun Shoot.

On Peoples Day, Mohamad Khalid Dimaporo (MKD) Caravan will feature the jobs fair, medical/dental/legal and agricultural services and other mass programs will be rendered during this day.

Other big events include the gathering of most loyal barangays showing gratefulness in their support to the Dimaporo Administration, said Calica.

The Singing Bee Show on July 1, the search for Miss Lanao del Norte on July 2 and the Bamboo concert on July 3 will followed by a fireworks display which is the first pyrotechnique musical in Mindanao.

Calica invites the neighboring cities to come and witness this coming event of Lanao del Norte.

The theme for this year’s big event, the Province of Lanao del Norte’s 50th Founding anniversary is Lanao del Norte 50 Anyos na, Panaghiusa, Kalinaw ug Kalamboan Ipadayon Ta!

And most specially if the Mindanao railway system will materialize. first phase of MRS will connect CDO and Iligan via Laguindingan Airport. I urged everyone to push our government and other stakeholders of the proposed MRS to implement this project as soonest time. basically, things like this happen because the currency value of a foreign monetary unit is much higher compared to the philippine peso. another reason is the fact that filipinos can easily be negotiated by fellow filipinos. in short, the filipinos think that you can afford it although the amount is already too high that's why they tried to augment the amount.

Air Manila international used to have a flight from Manila to Baloi that left Manila 6:30 am and arrived Baloi around 8:30 am. Pwde ka pang mag breakfast with your loved ones.

Thanks for the re-assurance about my not being overpriced. Overcharging of foriegners and tourists can turn into quite a discussion but things like that can and do happen all over the world, not just The Philippines. You have to be careful of " Gypsie Cabs " at the New York Airports ( especially if you are a foriegner and don't speak English reasonably well ) . I had a friend visit me from the UK who wanted to tour some of New York City. As much as I dislike going there myself I really forced myself and we took the train in. My friend was interested in some new kind of Camera that just came out at that time ( might have been a camera known as the " IMP " ) We were in Times Square and went to a " Touristy " kind of audio visual type of store who featured this camera at a " decent " price but they were charging $50 for the battery ! The " real " price of the battery was $10 . My friend did not buy the camera as I also explained to him that the warranty may not be valid in the UK.

I agree, Starbucks as well as many other " Upscale " coffee brands have a big price for the brand name. For me, at home I drink Maxwell House Instant Coffee. Dunkin' Doughnuts coffee is as " premium " as I need. I think that whole Upscale Coffee thing became somewhat of a " Fad " but now that the economy has tightened up so much people have to put their money elsewhere. As much as I like a cup of coffee there were only 2 places I drank coffee in The Philippines because both places assured me they had purified water that their coffie was made from . One was Jollibee, Tibanga and I'll let you guess the other place.

Concerning the Airport in Iligan, I wonder if it would actually be profitable for anyone to bring it up to the specifications required for the type of service it would be proposed to render and then support the operating costs after that ? Would it be a 24 / 7 operation ? Daylight only ? . If it had enough use to be profitable for it's operator would local residents go along with the increase of noise, ( I am thinking of " all " sized planes here including things like 747, Airbus 330, 340 etc. ) circling over and landing in or near Iligan at all hours of the day and night. The possibilities of aircraft beacon and strobe lights all night long lighting up the sky over Iligan ? There are a lot of possibilities and considerations to think about. I have not seen the airport near Iligan in person, only in pics and on Google Earth and it appears it might be a " few miles or Kilometers " from the city proper.

At the moment, the new " International " airport under construction ( plus or minus the delays ) along with the eventual railroad connecting it with Iligan and CDO sounds like a good compromise instead of having an airport large enough in Iligan to be profitable. The airport presently under construction along with the railroad direct to Iligan might provide the best of both worlds, the convienience without the drawbacks of having large commercial passenger and cargo aircraft landing in your back yard at all hours of the day and night.

If it does open.. it would surely cater passengers from Iligan City and Marawi City and close Lanao provinces.. traveling 1 hr 30 mins from Iligan to Laguindingan Airport is quite long especially if your rushing with time..
and its also been years that our airport has been close and slowly become dilapidated of no operation.. while other nearby cities of Iligan which their airports are being rehabilitated by the government..

I want to have a say about the laguindingan airport...

If we are complaining that it IS still CDO's airport, that's just jealousy. Why should we be jealous of our neighbours, shouldn't we be happy instead?

The current population size in iligan + CDO doesnt really require two separate airports. For example, in the UK 3 major cities share one airport (i.e. east midlands airport cater to derby, nottingham, leicester) , and that it is already in a first class world. We are not there yet, but having the laguindingan airport ideally for iligan and CDO is a big step up.

Economically, it costs a lot to park a plane in an airport. Airline companies would rather have one plane full of passengers rather than two half-full planes landing on separate airports. The cost on their behalf is more than doubled. Along with this, it is situated ideally, it allows flexibility for future expansions if the airport activities start to increase substantially. You have to take in noise pollution it will generate etc etc. Im sure the guys that have conceptualised this project did a good feasibility study, and im sure that it is at their interest to take all these things into account.

It is not a case of it being further away from iligan than CDO but rather the transportation facitilies. If the Mindanao railway system materialises, i would see them incorporating the airport as one of its stops, and then it wouldnt even matter. And that is the one weakness of the airport, it is dependent upon public transport implementation, but that is something that we will hope for and strive to achieve.

CHO Iligan paramedics into campaign vs A(H1N1)
by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (24 June) -- Medical doctors, nurses, midwives and other health personnel of the Iligan City Health Office (CHO) are deployed to conduct lectures focusing on the prevention against the new virus causing illness in people called Influenza A (H1N1).

City Health Officer Livey Villarin of Iligan City said that part of their drive is close guarding and disciplinary action for new arrivals of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) in the City.

"We encouraged families and relatives of the OFWs not to get in touch with them especially if they come from a country with a positive case of A (H1N1)," said Dr. Villarin.

As a precautionary measure, OFWs are advised to a self-quarantine for two weeks.

Dr. Villarin explained that A(H1N1) Flu is not transmitted by eating thoroughly cooked pork, but can be acquired through exposure to droplets from the cough and sneeze of an infected person.

To increase body's resistance and protect one's self from getting sick, a person may have at least 8 hours of sleep, be physically active, manage stress, drink plenty of fluids and eat nutritious food.

Among the measures, Villarin said that to combat A(H1N1), a person may cover his nose and mouth when coughing and sneezing; always wash hands with soap and water; use alcohol-based hand sanitizers; and, avoid close contact with sick people.

Villarin added that if there is a sick person at home, immediately bring him / her to a doctor.

"Children are susceptible to colds and flu, thus, we provide the different schools with reading materials on what they should know about A(H1N1)," Villarin concluded. (PIA-Lanao del Norte)

Hi All,

Now a question, why is it that the price of things goes up the moment a foreigner is seen? the number of times I was hidden round a corner with the family will my wife went and got a price for something was amazing... like our wedding venue, soon as I was seen by them they tried putting the price by a huge amount!

Jeff & Dahl

There are times when things can certainly seem that way, unfortunate as that is although it does not happen every time in every place. Yes, there may be some less scroupulos retailers and business establishments that feel they can make a few " Quick Peso " off the foriegner especially in a situation where they feel it may be a one time purchase or event.

When I go someplace for something and I like it and know or feel that I have been treated fairly, it is often that I will go back to that same place or otherwise do business with that place in the future. If I feel I may have been taken advantage of, I will put the effort into establishing some kind of proof that that actually happened and when I establish that, I make certain that that establishment never ever sees even one centavo of my money ever again. ( or what ever currency happens to be in use ) .

I had learned long before comming there that at open markets and with street vendors some times you are " expected " to " bargain " or " Haggle " prices with them to get them to come down on their initial asking price. I visited Iligan to enjoy myself and see places where many of the pictures I had seen were taken and enjoy my visit. I did not go to Iligan to have to haggle and argue with people so i just avoided places like that. That may be something for a future visit.

Although there are not as many online websites in The Philippines for checking on the price of things as there are here in the USA, there were a few that I could find to establish price ranges for things I might be interested in looking at while in Iligan City. Now you can not possibly expect a smaller independent business to give you a deeply discounted price ( like a Walmart Price ) as a big national chain can do because they buy in huge bulk quantities. Knowing the approximate or exact Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price for something will give you the high end price, you can sometimes use on-line prices for establishing a lower end price and develop a price range for specific items. Also knowing what the same or equivalent items sell for in your own country helps as well.

I tried as best as possible to go to places with posted prices. No arguing, no haggling, no hassle just pay the price and thats it. I just about always had Filipino friends with me, they knew the kind of places I wanted to go to and knew where they were.

Here are 3 examples of how I not only was NOT Overcharged for being a foriegner but I actually got a better deal than I expected and in the long run the merchants ended up with more money, than they would have if they had inflated their prices for a visitor.

The Appliance Adventure > >

I was curious to see what kind of Major appliances were marketed in The Philippines so I went to a few appliance stores. One store really caught my attention because of their posted prices. Yellow price signs with the prices hand written in big numbers with a felt tip marker. We have discount independent merchants like that here too so I found that fact alone very inviting to walk in and take a look around. When I expressed an interest in something a sales person asked if they could help me and was very polite ( not pushy ) about it. I verified specifications on the item and also asked to verify the posted price. The sales person replied " those are our posted prices but we can give you a discount for Cash ! . I knew what the item should have cost and the posted price was well within the high and low price range for that item. Obviously the sales person knew I was from " out of town " he did not have to tell me he could discount for cash but he did ! I was also told that they could deliver the item, same day, at an appointed time No Extra Charge ! Not wanting to rush out of that place I looked at some other items they had, saw something else that interested me. They offered me the same discount for cash, free delivery etc. I bought the second item too and mind you these were not " Nickel and Dime " ( or whatever your equivalent to that is ) purchases either. Then on top of that they even threw in a couple of nice electric table fans no additional charge. The items were delivered to the designated address at the appointed time and in good condition, and these were the very same items they uncrated and checked out at the store for me ( I put a secret mark on them when they were not looking ). This entire experience really made my day. On my next visit a few months later this store got more of my business and on a 3rd occasion they even got more and I am sure they will in the future too.

This place gave me what I felt would have been the same " deal " as if I were a local, they got my repeat business and not just once and I am sure they will get more in the future. They could have " diddled " with the prices when they saw me enter the place but they did not and they made more of a profit treating me the same as if I were a local. I like places like that and I do not easliy forget about them.

The PC Place >

I went to several places selling PC's and other related items, just to look around and maybe buy a couple of items. I went to some nice places with posted prices but to me, nothing that really excited me but this is not to say there was anything wrong with these places, they just did not excite me. Then I remembered a place from a previous visit and just thinking about all the stuff I remembered stacked up from the floor to the ceiling gave me a desire to go there again, I even remembered exactly where it was. I went into the place with a couple of Filipino friends. I try very hard not to open my mouth as soon as I walk into a store, to me it is my way of disguising the fact that I am " from out of town " LOL. Soon as I opened my mouth and said something, it was like from out of nowhere someone turns around and says " Hey ! You must be Bob New York " . This place had exactly what I wanted, name brand items, the prices were within range. Now with a greeting like I got at this place you think they are going to play games with the prices ? Several days later I was back at that store again and bought even more stuff ! Another retailer that treated me the same as they would a local person, they got my business, they got my repeat business, and I am sure they will get more in the future.

The missing Pasalubongs >

On my first visit, my luggage was lost by the airline somewhere between Taipei and Manila. When I got to Iligan I arrived with little more than the clothes on my back and what ever I had in my small carry on luggage. I had exchanged details with and filled out forms at Manila and wondered if I would ever really see my luggage again. I had the phone number to call in Manila but I could not directly dial it from the phone in my hotel room, the front desk had to do that since it was a long distance call. Several phone calls and I was getting next to no where with information from the airline. I explained to the hotel what was going on with the Manila phone calls. They offered to follow up on my luggage if I cared to give them the details so I would not have to stay in my hotel room all day with the phone. I gave them the details and they kept following up on my missing luggage. Now it was not my clothes that concerned me so much as I could ( and did ) buy some at Gaisano Dept Store ( this was before the mall even got started ) but I had some pasalubongs I brought special for some friends, that is what started to annoy me if they did not eventually show up. Three days later LBC delivered my luggage, everything there, no damage nothing missing.

I knew what my room rate was going to be for the time I stayed at that hotel and upon check out the amount was accurate but the cost of all those Manila calls and some calls to cell phones from my room never showed up on the bill. I could have just checked out and not said anything about the calls but I just couldn't be like that in a place I looked forward to visiting for so long. When I asked about the phone calls the reply was " NO PROBLEM SIR " . It was just a few months later this place got my repeat business, and I am sure they will in the future as well.

It is unfortunate that price gouging games are played on foriegners all over the world and with the internet the way it is today news travels fast, both the good and the " less desireable ". You would think some of the less scroupulos retailers etc. would be wise to that.

These are three examples of how three different businesses actually made More money by being honest and not playing games with " special " pricing for a foriegn visitor. In many instances there is more profit, more good will, and more positive publicity out of giving the foriegner the same deal as they would a local person. Their profit will be in Repeat Business.

These actual situations I have described here are just one more reason I feel I can say,

In my opinion, i dont think having our own airport would make our city a better place than the others. Major cities in the world as well as second cities are already moving out their airports out of their cities because of noise pollution and traffic. Let us also try to think of the other factors as to why their is no air traffic in Iligan and the necessary pre-requisites for an airport to be possible.

I think a 1 and half hour travel isn't that long to travel to Iligan and with the LADP being only about 35-40 mins, that is already a plus for a good air travel. In Manila, even though Caloocan is already near, you can almost get to the NAIA at almost an hour already given the traffic situation in the metro. And ours here in Iligan to CdeO is straight travel time to the airport rather than the boring traffic and air pollution.

One thing too is that having airports near the proximity of the other does not give a good economic turn out to both places who have the airports coz in turn they will be killing one another just to get the number of flights. I dont think we would want that happening within our region. Perhaps, we are just so fascinated of other cities where you can see airplanes flying in and out everyday coz we don't have it in our own but once it becomes too regular for you, then it wouldn't matter anymore. We would then even complain for the noise that each plane makes when they come in and out of city.

Well, for one, it's 100% owned by Filipinos, unlike Starbucks and Seattle's Best which are foreign based companies. So, by patronizing Figaro, you are patronizing local products, and in return, helping our local industry and/or economy grow.

Two, Figaro serves the same quality of service and commodities that Starbucks and Seattle's Best do. They offer the same coffee and stuff, and the same ambiance, or even better, if you're going there for that reason.

And lastly, Figaro is cheaper than either Starbucks or Seattle's Best albeit only marginally.

Support our local industry.
Patronize Philippine products/companies.

Shoppe24

Quezon Ave. Extn. Pala-o, Iligan City (Beside Yoms)

shoppe 24? what are they selling? Nice signage, simple but iconic and eye catching. Meron talagang idea of business psychology ang may ari nito.

Speaking of Calda, though i havent been there and basing on their pics, i like their menu coz they really put the "Italian" touch in every part of the menu that they have. Every pizza name is Italian and it seems they really know what they are doing in pizza business. It puts away the "fast-food" thingy idea which means they really mean "experience" more than anything else in their concept.

Bodega pa rin ng Gaisano. I hope this will be converted into a Mall, It has a wide frontage that can accomodate a lot of shops in the first floor. I heard there's a dispute on land ownership, don't know about the details, otherwise this has been utilized a long time ago.

Railway project starts before year-end: exec (http://www.goldstardailynews.com/content.php?sectionid=4&id=4371)

By MARK FRANCISCO - Staff member Updated July 4-5, 2009 12:00 AM
THE ambitious Mindanao railways project would be started by year-end to complement the Laguindingan airport, an official of the transportation department said yesterday.

Transportation undersecretary Guiling Mamondiong said he expects initial civil works from Cagayan de Oro City to Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental, the site of the airport being constructed in the region.

Mamondiong said the Cagayan de Oro-Laguindingan line would only form part of the first phase of the railways project which would stretch from Linamon, Lanao del Norte, to Jasaan, Misamis Oriental.

After the Cagayan de Oro-Laguindingan line has been constructed, engineers would work on the Iligan City-Laguindingan line, followed by the Linamon-Iligan line and the Cagayan de Oro-Jasaan line.

All in all, the Linamon-Jasaan phase would cover 120 kilometers.

According to Mamondiong, the $800-million Mindanao railway system project would stretch across Mindanao, hugging the shorelines in some parts such as northern Mindanao.

It would reportedly cover a total of 2,000 kilometers.

The rest of the project would attempt to connect Butuan City to the Davao, Cotabato and Zamboanga provinces as well as the cities of Malaybalay, General Santos and Zamboanga.

“The railway system will always be parallel with the national highway,” said Mamondiong, adding that Saudi Arabian, Spanish and Chinese entities have expressed interest in helping finance the project.

Mamondiong said the first phase of the project is expected to be completed in 2012.
In 2006, a congressman said that for the first phase, about 45 tunnels and bridges, measuring a total of 25 kilometers, would be constructed.

The project would require the acquisition of about 360 hectares which would be used for the construction of formation and rail tracks and for the location of the depot and terminal stations.

“There will be no problem with right of way,” Mamondiong assured.

The government is so serious in pursuing the project that it inaugurated the Mindanao Railways Office yesterday in Bulua. President Arroyo created the office in 2006 through a presidential proclamation.

45 tunnels just for phase 1? that's a whole of tunnels! I hope they can show us the master plan for this one. And hopefully, when this materializes, it will shorten the travel of goods and lessen the prices of goods due to 'kotong'. This is really good for us here in Northern Mindanao because of the heavy industries. It will shorten the travel time of steel products from here to CdeO and other agricultural products to both cities of Iligan and provinces of Mis Or and Lanao Norte.

I hope Gaisano will work on this o baka naman nd lang talga magaling yung marketing team nila. Tnx.

11 hurt in Iligan blast
By Dennis Carcamo Updated July 07, 2009 01:24 PM

MANILA, Philippines -- Eleven people, including three soldiers, were wounded in another explosion today -- this time near a pawnshop in Iligan City, Lanao del Norte -- a military official said.

Col. Benito de Leon, the Army's 104th Brigade commander, said an improvised explosive device went off around 10:30 a.m. at the vicinity of Exquisite Pawnshop at the corner of Sabayle and Cabili streets, Iligan City.

The wounded were brought to Dr. Yu Hospital for treatment, De Leon said.

Initial investigation showed that the bomb was placed inside a car by the perpetrators.

Authorities are still investigating the incident.

Farm-to-market road for Higaonons in Iligan to be built (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6630&Itemid=50)

ILIGAN CITY -- Higaonons living in the remote villages of Kalilangan, Panoroganan, Digkilaan, Lanipao and Dulag may soon enjoy a concrete farm-to-market road.

Rep. Vicente Varf Belmonte (1st District, Lanao del Norte) told MindaNews “engineers from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) would prefer to concrete the roads that will connect these five villages than the common or former logging road going to Rogongon because these are unproductive parts of the hinterland. That route has no economic value."

"I would prefer to develop the roads that can truly help farmers bring their farm produce to the city," Belmonte said.

"We have already observed the clearing operations done by road engineers and the tribal council was grateful for this development,” Glengyl Onga Umali, a community organizer of Higaonon and Kolibogan tribes in Iligan said.

Dimapingun Comonog, tribal leader from barangay Kalilangan, had been complaining that their poor and inaccessible road has made it difficult for them to transport their farm produce or bring their sick children and women to hospital

He said they are forced to use the habal-habal (motorcycle), which is prone to accidents.

The five hinterland barangays are part of the eight villages listed in Category B of the government-Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) Memorandum of Agreement on Ancestral Domain (MOA-AD)

Rogongon is also among the eight villages in Iligan that was listed in the MOA-AD. Under the botched MOA-AD, residents in these villages are supposed to vote in a plebiscite if they want to be part of the Bangsamoro Juridical Entity (BJE), supposedly a year after the signing of the MOA-AD.

Belmonte said that concreting the roads in the hinterland would be finished by 2010, adding he had accessed P30 million for the expansion of the Iligan-Bukidnon road.

He said he has also accessed P363 million from the P1 billion intended for the C3 road that will connect three residential barangays of the city.

He said the Tubod road repair and reconstruction amounted to P30 million.

The congressman added he successfully lobbied for P200 million for the asphalting of all barangay roads of Iligan and another P260 million for road expansion in the first district.

He said all these are being implemented by DPWH.

Iligan school board allots P2M for feeding program (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=6628&Itemid=50)

ILIGAN CITY -- This city’s school board celebrated nutrition month by approving P2 million for a feeding program intended for malnourished pupils in 84 elementary schools.

Mayor Lawrence Cruz, co-chair of the LSB, said they intend to feed pupils once a week with cheap but vitamin-enriched food like vegetables.

"This is also one way of addressing the retention problem of our pupils caused by food insecurity and poverty," Cruz said.

The measure, initiated by Task Force 47-74+1, seeks to sustain the Batang Sikat ug Kusgan (BasKug), a feeding program of St. Michael’s College in partnership with Jollibee Foundation to reverse the pupils’ deficiencies in terms of retention, comprehension and analytical skills.

BasKug fed on a daily basis 170 malnourished pupils from five elementary schools last year in accordance with prescribed menus.

Project officer Butch Alcudia reported that all of the 170 pupils gained weight and qualified to the next grade.

"That is a significant achievement that we have and will be used as model in furthering this campaign," Alcudia said.

Cruz also encouraged the federation of Parents-Teachers-Community Association, city council committee on agriculture and food, and the office of the city agriculture to start institutionalizing backyard gardening in every home to sustain this campaign.

Rhodora Englis, co-chair of Task Force 47-74+1, thanked the LSB for supporting its feeding program but "we still seek more support since there are other projects that need to be implemented if we truly intend to reverse the crisis in education.

"We still need P7 million every year for workbooks reproduction, science instrumentation, and teachers trainings for all elementary schools in the next five years," she said.

The campaign started after the city got a failing average of 47% in the National Achievement Test in 2007. Last year, the city garnered 49% NAT average , which is way below the passing rate of 75%.

“There is really a need to study how the local school board fund is allocated and to maximize its use for the improvement of classroom instruction," Englis, a professor at Mindanao State University-IIT, said.

Lady doctor hurt in Misamis grenade blast

abs-cbnNEWS.com | 07/08/2009 10:51 AM

A lady doctor in Manticao town, Misamis Oriental, was hurt after a grenade rigged into her jeep's engine exploded Wednesday morning.

The Misamis Oriental Police Provincial Office said the grenade exploded after Dr. Rosa Batoctoy started her jeep's engine at her home's garage in Purok 5, Barangay Poblacion around 6:30 a.m.

Batoctoy was hurt in the right leg and the jeep was badly damaged, police said.

Police said Batoctoy suspects communist rebels are behind the attempt on her life. She told police that last month, he received an extortion letter from the letters.

CCTV shows man planting bomb in Iligan City

By Richel Umel
Inquirer Mindanao
First Posted 11:32:00 07/08/2009

ILIGAN CITY -- A closed-circuit TV camera mounted at the junction of Sabayle Street and Cabili Avenu here caught the image of a man, who on Tuesday, placed a paper box underneath a red Mitsubishi car.

Moments later, the car was blown into pieces and the debris from the explosion injured at least nine persons, including an Army officer, who was on a vehicle trying to squeeze into a space near the scene of the explosion.

Councilor Voltaire Rovira did not describe how the male suspect looked like but said the CCTV images were now being used in an ongoing police investigation.

A boy, who was in the area during the explosion, told investigators he and a companion had been approached by a man and asked them to help him carry a box.

The boy said they declined because the box was too heavy.

When shown the CCTV images, the boy positively identified the man as the same person, who had approached them.

Michael Macarambon of the Land Transportation Office here said they traced the car's ownership to a Maio Rodelio dela Pena of the National Capital Region.

He said they were trying to establish how the car got to the city.

Got one question though..

Are the cctv cam quality of video of much higher quality from the control room or just the same with what we can view thru our web browsers? Coz i am thinking if the quality is not good, only the silhouette of the culprit can be seen even if the camera is directly pointed at him....

Alingatong
July 9th, 2009, 12:54 AM
Yes, the video quality is much better and the frame rate is higher at the control monitor than what we viewed thru our browser. But there are some cameras installed in some locations that need periodic cleaning due to dust and smog exposure which cause lower video quality.

Rules (wearing helmets) were always there, but it was the enforcement that was lax. Ang picture nga naman...nagsasabi ng totoo. :ohno:

The Philippines is a tropical Asian Republic of 81 million people living on 7,100 islands spread over 117,000 square miles -- an area roughly the size of Arizona. Catholics make up 83% of the population; 9% are Protestant, 5% are Muslim, and the remainder are Buddhist and other religions.

Forty percent of Filipinos are involved in agriculture, and 37% make their living in the government and service sectors. The per capita income is $2,500.

The two major ethnic groups in the Philippines are Malay and Chinese. The national language is Pilipino, based on Tagalog, but English is the language of government and of instruction in higher education. The Philippines enjoys a high literacy rate (more than 93%).

The Philippines, formerly under both Spanish and American control, has a representative democracy form of government. The current administration is dealing with the aftermath of a corruption scandal.

The Spiritans in the Philippines work among the Chinese Filipinos on the island of Mindanao, both in urban Iligan and in the mountainous, remote areas.

Of all the places, why Iligan? Why not CDO, Ozamis, Pagadian or Tubod? Why Iligan? Is there politics going on? Are the officials of these places named above involved to degrade the image of Iligan City? Who knows? :ohno:

There's the difference. At, ito ang prangkahang sagot sa tanong mo.

Been to Sabayle area and noticed that asphalt overlaying is also being done there. I just hope the city will not run out of funds for this asphalt overlay project.

Seems like the intelligence fund under Quijano adminstration is justified, in my opinion.

Lanao del Norte hosts the biggest dairy farm in RP (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=485977&publicationSubCategoryId=77)
By Breezy Jimenez Updated July 12, 2009 12:00 AM

MANILA, Philippines – Having a population of more than 5,000 heads of cattle, the biggest dairy farm in the country today can be found in Lanao del Norte.

Two thousand of these cows were imported directly from Australia and in the years that followed the mother cows begat more than 3,000 offsprings.

The dairy farm is owned and managed by the Lanao Foundation, Inc. (LFI) in coordination with Lanao del Norte provincial government.

Dr. Usodan Samporna, chief of Lanao del Norte’s provincial veterinarian’s office, said the dairy farm received a lot of help from the Dimaporos.

“Through the able leadership of Rep. Abdullah Dimaporo, former governor of Lanao del Norte, the dairy farm was birthed and it is now a reality,” Samporna said. “It was pursued by his wife Imelda (former governor) and his son, currently the governor of the province Gov. Mohamad Khalid Dimaporo.”

Samporna said a milk processing plant was constructed at the Bangaan, Sultan Naga Dimaporo (formerly Karomatan, the place where the late Gov. Mohamad “Ali” Dimaporo and his family settled).

“The milk processing plant can operate 24 hours a day with a capacity of 72,000 liters of milk from 20,000 head of cows,” he said.

The veterinary chief said at present 103 cows produce 344 liters of milk in the morning. They are milked at a milking parlor located at Barangay Barakayo, Sultan Naga Dimaporo about four kilometers away from the milk processing plant. There is no record yet how many liters of milk that the 448 cows can produce in the afternoon, he added.

Samporno said the milk is distributed according to a milk feeding program covering Lanao del Norte, Cagayan de Oro and neighboring provinces.

Samporno also said the tie-up between LFI and Land 0’Lakes (LOL), the biggest milk cooperative in the world, the province dairy farm will be more aggressive in distributing the milk in the entire island of Mindanao.

Based on the agreement entered into recently between the LFI and the L0L, the L0L will supply cow breeders from the US to LFI and the latter will buy its cows’ offspring for the dairy zones which they established.

Samporna said that one dairy zone will be put up by L0L in Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao which is the LFI.

The vision of LFI is to provide milk to at least 60,000 farm families in the province and its nearby neighboring provinces, Samporna said.

ag astig mo talaga dre! Yep, its true that Ozamis is governed with an iron fist. Kaya lang, pati backyard industry nila ay hawak din ng admin (if you know what i mean).

Just like Imperial Plaza at Unitop. Umabot na ng 2nd and 3rd level yong construction pero walang info board sa site. :ohno: Buti pa yong Highway 30.
