In Davao City, at least 60 percent of public transport drivers joined the protest action, police said. In Cagayan De Oro City, a similar strike paralyzed 80 percent of public transportation, according to the police. Classes in public and private schools in Iligan City were suspended because of the strike, which also crippled 80 percent of Iligan's public transportation, according to Senior Superintendent Leonardo Esclamado, city police chief. But the strike failed to paralyze public transport in General Santos City as only a few drivers joined the protest. Normal flow of traffic was observed in city streets. George San Mateo, secretary general of Piston (Pagkakaisa ng mga Samahan ng Tsuper at Opereytor Nationwide), said that at 5 a.m., the following jeepney routes were paralyzed after drivers under their organization went on strike: Cubao at the corners of Aurora Boulevard and St. Mary, Novaliches-Bayan, Kamias corner Kalayaan, Pasig-Palengke, Zapote, Taytay, Angono, Alabang City Terminal, and Monumento in front of Ever Gotesco Grand Central. Simultaneous transport strikes were also held in the areas of Calabarzon (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon), Bicol, Panay, and Guimaras. Protest actions will also be held in the cities of Baguio, Bacolod, and Cebu, San Mateo said. Because of this, San Mateo urged the government to suspend work and classes in the affected areas of the strike to prevent civilians from getting stranded. “Hindi titigil ang mga tsuper at operator sa pagpoprotesta hanggat hindi nawawakasan ang pagkagahaman sa tubo ng Big 3 at ang mga pahirap na bayarin at multa ng gobyernong Arroyo (Drivers and operators will not stop the protest until the end of the Big 3’s profiteering and the Arroyo administration’s onerous fees and penalties),” San Mateo said, referring to the three major oil companies Pilipinas Shell, Petron Corp., and Chevron Corp. San Mateo urged motorists to boycott the three oil companies “upang magdulot ng bilyong-bilyong lugi sa kita ng Big 3 gayundin mawawalan ng milyon-milyong oil VAT collections ang gobyerno (to cause great losses to the Big 3, as well as millions of government losses in oil VAT collections).” He also urged President Gloria Macagapal-Arroyo to audit the oil firms. inquirer.net (http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/nation/view/20090713-215196/Transport-strike-to-stop-80-of-transport) rage@cebu July 13th, 2009, 01:35 PM walang jeep pauwi sa Suarez! :) Alingatong July 13th, 2009, 01:45 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/asphalt1.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/asphalt2.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/asphalt3.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/asphalt4.jpg I thought the project is being implemented by the City Government :ohno:. Rogongon for 4 days and 3 nights is totally different from what other people use to say na gubot daw na lugar... daghan daw ug kwan... and other bluffs.. rather the people (mostly native Higa-unons) in Rogongon welcomes us heart warmly in their homes even we only survey and enumerate the forms we carry.. dili parehas sa siyudad na usahay ignan paka ug "sa politiko daw na survey kay doul na daw ang eleksyon..." :ohno: which in fact I explain to them that this is a Nationwide survey project of DSWD for Poverty Reduction... others would simply refuse us to survey in their houses sa syudad.. kay pila na daw ka survey na hitabo.. ni isa ka benipisyo wala daw ning abot... " :ohno: I just don't like it the typical Filipino mentality like this.. Anyway, enough of the bluffing stuff.. developments aside naman tayo this time.. Roads going to Rogongon is not good for faint heart drivers.. but there some portions of the whole stretch of Iligan-Bukidnon road that are already concreted including also some mountain wall retainers especially areas like in Brgy. Digki-laan and Brgy. Bonbonon.. A bridge is also set to replace the submarine bridge at Rogongon in Purok Kabangahan as the base bidge peirs are already in placed... :) Most of the work are all credited by Congress Vicente "Varf" Belmonte as he is the only who prioritized this long ghetto project... Daghan ga ingon sa mga taga Rogongon na way nada si Tikbong Badelles kay taman ra ug storya iyang gipang hambog sa una ning project pero si Varf ra daw naka himo ani na project... :) duol naman sad election.. :ohno:  This are the pics and videos I taken last week ago in Brgy. "It´s a done deal," said Catalino L. Chan III, regional director of the Department of Tourism Region 10 shortly after Northern Mindanao´s 20-day cultural festival celebrating the Best of Region X literally ended with a bang on June 14 with a spectacular fireworks display. "We´re signing the agreement this month in Manila to bring this event to even more people at this premier venue." SM Mall of Asia is the second largest shopping mall in the Philippines (after SM City North EDSA) with a land area of 42 hectares and a gross floor area of some 410,000 square meters. Located at Bay City, Pasay City near the SM Central Business Park and the Manila Bay, the mall has a maximum capacity of 4.2 million people and attracts a daily foot traffic of 200,000 people. Attracting a crowd estimated at 75,000 persons during its three-week run, observers noted how WOW Philippines Pasundayag sa Northern Mindanao has consistently been the most popular regional presentation to date in terms of crowd-drawing power. "Talagang hinihintay ng mga tao ang Northern Mindanao," said Mang Inggo, a long-time food concessionaire near Clamshell 1, the venue which hosted WOW Philippines series of regional presentations. "Ang kita ng food stall ko ay tatlong beses ng average daily sales ko kasi ang daming pumaparito upang mapanood ang Northern Mindanao." (People really wait up for the Northern Mindanao presentation. The daily average sales of my stall triples whenever Region X is in town because so many people come to watch." In fact, during its last three days hosted by the province of Misamis Occidental and the cities of Tangub, Ozamiz and Oroquieta, visitors were often reluctant to leave the Clamshell as the popular Sinanduloy Rock Band of Tangub City rang down the day´s presentation with its patented medley of current and past hits which saw both visitors and hosts gyrating on the dance floor. Pasundayag Northern Mindanao is a presentation aimed at bringing the Region´s best people, places, tourism festivals, sports, adventure and culture to the heart of the nation´s capital and populace. "This is a good venue to take a glimpse of Northern Mindanao and what we can offer to tourists," Undersecretary for Tourism Planning and Promotions Eduardo Jarque, Jr. noted. For six hours daily, every day for 20 days a cultural festival of street dancing, craft demonstrations, tutorials on playing of indigenous musical instruments, dance clinic, ethnic sports exhibit, , film screening, interactive showcases on adventure, arts culture, wellness and cuisine, and mini-trade fair of agricultural products, processed foods and handicrafts, travel and accommodation packages lured visitors from all over the metro. Contingents to this year´s edition of the Pasundayag was actively participated by the region´s eight cities (Cagayan de Oro, Tangub, Oroquieta, Ozamiz, Iligan, Malaybalay, Valencia, and Gingoog) and four provinces (Camiguin, Bukidnon, Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental). Alternating venues between Metro Manila and Northern Mindanao, Pasundayag Northern Mindanao 2009 took off from where its previous edition hosted by Iligan City left off with the theme "Pasundayag Northern Mindanao Wellness/Adventure Tourism and Cultural Expo" on December 11-14 at the Gaisano Citi Supermall. Like the Iligan edition, Pasundayag Northern Mindanao 2009 also showcased the wellness and adventure destinations in Northern Mindanao like spas, health clinics, therapeutic centers, extreme sports and adventure trips, services, wellness cuisine and indigenous/traditional medicine from the region´s 10 indigenous tribes. "Our focus on wellness tourism and adventure sports rang a bell with health-conscious tourists and expats who are constantly seeking new ways to renew their minds, bodies and spirits while enjoying the sights, textures and sounds of the region´s culture and destinations," Chan said. "Wellness tourism means good life, healthy food or a recreation facility where people can relax physically, spiritually and emotionally." A highlight of the latest Pasundayag was the demonstration zipline, monkey bridge and rock climbing wall set up by Iligan City and event sponsor "Tribu" and "Transco" which proved popular with the young and adventurous visitors. During its last three days, the Pasundayag reached out further through the mass media through its participation in the national celebration of the country´s 111th Independence Day. Indigenous people from Cagayan de Oro´s Malasag Eco-Tourism Village led by Datu Nilo Gabao and the Indakolon Band of the Manobo-Tigwahanon tribe, the famous "Kadang-Kadang" stilts acrobatic team of the Manobo-Matigsalog tribe of Quezon, Bukidnon; Bag-Ong Ozamiznon Dance Troupe of Ozamiz City, Oroquieta City´s Higa-onon Dance Troupe and the Kagay-an Performing Arts wowed the crowds at Quirino Grandstand with their spectacular and colorful dances and exhibitions. Nearby, the Region 10 Singing Ambassadors shared the spotlight with famous artists like Charice Pempengco, Bayang Barrios, Smokey Manaloto, and child star "Santino" for the 111th Independence Day program aired over NBN-4 with a much-applauded pastiche of famous Pinoy folk songs and ballads. www.americanchronicle.com (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/110219) TONZI July 16th, 2009, 11:14 AM Kini ako pangutana lang? I'm telling you, when Tikbong reported about this Iligan-Bukidnon project way back in the late 90s, I was one of those who became so ecstatic on the project but it failed my expectations. If I remember it right, Tikbong reported of a "passable" Iligan to Bukidnon Road. But when we went there for a water project at one of the sitios of Rogongon, a habal-habal driver told me that it is not passable even with a two wheeled motorized vehicle. And now, at least with Varf's answer to the project, he did better than expectations. Although the whole stretch is not yet concreted all the way to Talakag, Bukidnon; some people have put positive comments especially those who live there. All I can say is the people at Rogongon have no negative inputs regarding this project unlike that of the previous administration. So, with that, I think Varf has done a good job with his first term. Regarding pud anang sa Lanao del Norte/Lanao del Sur, didto kusog man ang 'ghost projects', diri sa Iligan dili man. Pero siguro naa gyud mga below the standards construction but not that worse like in LDN and LNS nga "ghost" gyud--as in, no shadow - no soul gyud. g0Rs July 16th, 2009, 12:45 PM ID3H2Jsw2As Alingatong July 16th, 2009, 01:40 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/sabayle-1.jpg Here's a shot of Sabayle St. Notice that only a portion is overlaid with asphalt. Nearby, the Region 10 Singing Ambassadors shared the spotlight with famous artists like Charice Pempengco, Bayang Barrios, Smokey Manaloto, and child star "Santino" for the 111th Independence Day program aired over NBN-4 with a much-applauded pastiche of famous Pinoy folk songs and ballads. www.americanchronicle.com (http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/110219) :):):):):):):) :fiddle::fiddle::fiddle: nakit-an pod nako ni... 5bblC7H3_JA ... Residents and tourists will assure you this city remains peaceful and secure. And finding Tinago Falls, this city’s best-kept secret, could be a worthwhile activity for visitors. Nestled in a ravine between two mountains, the 420-foot natural wonder aptly called Tinago Falls is one of Northern Mindanao’s most interesting tourism sites. The name, which means "hidden," is one of the 23 falls found in 44 barangays of Iligan City in Lanao del Norte. Aside from Tinago, this city is also home to the country’s highest waterfall: the two-tiered, 870-foot Limunsudan Falls that can be reached through a two-day mountain trek. Despite its name, Tinago Falls has recently become one of the most visited spots in the region with up to 100,000 visitors annually. It is second only to the Maria Cristina Falls: the source of hydroelectric power that provides electricity to the entire island of Mindanao. Unlike the latter, which tourists can only view from a distance, Tinago is safe for bathing and even offers a selection of flora as one treks down the narrow mountainside trail consisting of about 400 steps. "I like the adventure of going up and down the mountain. For those who are adventurous, it’s really part of the appeal," said Anthony Tan, a local university professor who visits the falls regularly. "The fact that it’s hidden gives it an air of mystery but I hope they make it more accessible... but hopefully not too much, just enough to make people want to go there," he added. Located almost 14 km from the city proper, the area is considered a rare and unexpected find for tourists who have to take an hour-long jeepney ride to Brgy. Buru-un followed by a 30-minute ride onboard a habal-habal or motorcycle for hire. Don’t worry, the ride is safe and the whole trip is inexpensive at roughly P150 per person. There are some stalls that sell refreshments near the falls but visitors are allowed to bring their own. http://www.bworldonline.com/Weekender071709/photos/fall.jpg Tinago Falls is composed of a major waterfall and several smaller ones surrounding it. Tinago is composed of a major waterfall and several smaller ones surrounding it, all constantly dispensing water from Lake Lanao into a large deep pool where tourists can take a dip for P10. "[It is] one of the unspoiled secrets of southern Philippines, and we can’t blame local officials for hiding it this long. [The thrill] surpasses Luzon’s pretentious water parks, any day, at a reasonable cost," said Gia Indonto, a tourist from Las Piñas City in Metro Manila. Another visitor recalls the trek down to the falls was slippery and muddy, and having to cling to wild vines for support. "Basically, the steps are carved from the side of the mountain and when it rains it can get extremely slippery," said Rosita Samson, a retired school teacher. "I remember seeing wild passion fruit and giant ferns along the way. It’s good that even today, the surrounding forest is still lush," she added. Although there have been many visitors in recent years, the falls remains largely undeveloped with only a number of wooden huts for visitors and a few concrete pathways. "We are currently on the lookout for investors to help the city develop the site," said Glovianne Bartholome, a city tourism officer. Even without much development, the falls continues to generate awe from visitors. "This was the highlight of my Iligan trip. Be sure not to miss [Tinago Falls] when you’re there," said Rick Manzano, a Manila-based photographer in a blog post. Ms. Bartholome added that information on Tinago and any of the local falls is available online and assures visitors of their safety. "We have never had a problem with tourists’ safety. The area surrounding the falls is safe as well," she said. — Mara Barbra S. Gabule Iligan City(20 July) -- Since criminals are becoming sophisticated, law enforcers and peace-loving people should also fight criminals using sophisticated equipment. This was stressed by Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan City, adding that, "One way of fighting crimes is the installation of Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras." "The surveillance cameras of the City Government that have been installed in conspicuous places, for example, have captured movements of criminals and terrorists and played an important role in aiding security forces identify criminals even after the occurrence of crimes," Mayor Cruz explained. Since business establishments like banks, pawnshops, stores and lending firms are susceptible to robbery and even schools and malls can be targeted as well, the Sangguniang Panlungsod has considered that there is a need for the owners/operators to install CCTV cameras and other video monitoring devices inside and around the vicinity of their establishments. In a public hearing conducted in February this year, attended in by concerned business owners and their representatives, the participants did not interpose any objection to the proposed ordinance. Thus, in a regular session held on May 2009, and on joint motion of Sangguniang Panlungsod Members Jose L. Zalsos and Providencio P. Abragan, Sr., and were duly seconded by Members Bayani C. Areola and Orlanded M. Maglinao, it resolved, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod of Iligan City that City Ordinance No. 09-5478 be adopted and approved. This is an ordinance requiring all commercial and service establishments whether private or public operating in Iligan City, to install CCTV cameras, video monitoring devices, and similar equipment within their premises and providing penalties for violation. The installation of CCTV and other monitoring devices will serve as deterrence to the commission of crimes and provide assistance to law enforcers in the identification, apprehension and prosecution of crime suspects. Private establishments catering to the general public, and with capitalization of not less than PhP 100,000 and public offices serving the general public are mandated to install CCTVs and other video monitoring devices in their establishments like banks, bus terminals, department stores, entertainment places, gasoline stations and depots, groceries especially those operating 24 hours, hospitals, internet cafes, lending firms, malls, pawnshops, restaurants, schools, seaports, ports and passenger terminals, sports centers, theatres, churches (to be installed outside their premises only), and hotels and inns (to be installed in the entrances). Failure of the owners/managers to comply the ordinance shall subject to following penalty: first offense, warning with condition that the establishment shall install CCTV within fifteen (15) days; second offense, fine of P3,000.00; and third offense, fine of P5,000.00. The first phase is from Laguindingan to Cagayan de Oro City; second phase is Laguindingan to Iligan City; third phase is Cagayan de Oro to Phividec area in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental and the final phase from Iligan City to Linamon town, Lanao del Norte.:cheers::cheers: Accordingly, the facilities to be used in the railways system are modern equipment used in Europe with the first phase expected to be finished in time for the opening of the Laguindingan Airport.:cheers::cheers: Certainly, this will be Mindanao’s first and soon to further boost the island’s economy. san ung ibang phase but more on from Laguindingin to iligan and Cagayan only wat about the other cities that will link each other?hmm but more on focus sa isang place lang?hmmp hopefully like this ung installed na fast and hitech na train.,, like the one in Paris that link all over the France hehehe...or mamaya baka mukhang train lng just like in Manila to southern luzon wag sana ganun:bash::lol: Wind Shear July 22nd, 2009, 07:01 AM san ung ibang phase but more on from Laguindingin to iligan and Cagayan only wat about the other cities that will link each other?hmm but more on focus sa isang place lang?hmmp hopefully like this ung installed na fast and hitech na train.,, like the one in Paris that link all over the France hehehe...or mamaya baka mukhang train lng just like in Manila to southern luzon wag sana ganun:bash::lol: Actually, GE locomotives for MM and Southern Luzon are old, but very tough. Mayor Cruz has approved the ordinance on May 29, 2009. (PIA-Lanao del Norte) this is good news :) @uonno, ang galing mo talaga. Mindanao fastest growing region in ’08 NORTHERN MINDANAO grew the fastest among the country’s 17 regions at 5.3% last year, though slower than its 7.7% growth in 2007, the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) said in a statement yesterday announcing the release of 2008 Gross Regional Domestic Product data. The region’s growth was fueled by the 10.7% expansion of its agriculture, fishery and forestry sector, which accounted for 31.2% of the region’s output. Rounding out the top five fastest growing regions in 2008 were the National Capital Region (NCR) with 4.9% growth; SOCCSKSARGEN (South Cotabato, Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani provinces and General Santos City) with 4.6%; Western Visayas with 4.4%; and Bicol with 4.3%. The Cordillera Administrative Region grew the slowest at 1.8%, from 7.1% in 2007. The entire country grew slower by 4.6% last year, from a three-decade-high of 7.2% in 2007. Sixteen of the 17 regions grew slower. Only Eastern Visayas grew faster at 3.6% in 2008 from 3.1% in 2007. Moreover, the data showed increasing concentration of growth in Metro Manila and surrounding regions. Specifically, NCR continued to increase its share in the country’s total output with a 33% share last year, from 32.7% in 2007 and 32.5% in 2006. CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) followed with 11.9% and Central Luzon with 8.3%. On the other hand, impoverished Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao had the lowest share of only 0.9% of the country’s GDP. “I think the lower growth is obvious because of the effect of the crisis, which started in the third quarter of 2008, on the regional economies,” University of Asia and the Pacific economist Cid L. Terosa said in a phone interview yesterday. With the global slowdown in demand during 2008, Mr. Terosa said he had expected regions dependent on investments and exports to have taken the hardest hits. One such region is MIMAROPA (Occidental Mindoro, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon and Palawan provinces), which posted the steepest growth slowdown at 3.1% in 2008 from 9.8% — the fastest in 2007. “MIMAROPA depended on mining investments, but a lot of them did not materialize,” Mr. Terosa said. Conversely, he said Eastern Visayas’ improved growth was more by default than resilience. “I feel that Eastern Visayas weathered the crisis because it does not have a strong investment and export sector… [hence] is less exposed to [external] variables.” — Michael Paolo T. NM - Angat sa iba. Alingatong July 23rd, 2009, 06:13 AM ^^ if i'm not mistaken, it's probably due to the non-stop drilling they did in our roads (concrete reblocking). the vibration might have caused the traffic lights to malfunction. I can't blame people for being skeptical towards this project. Too many reasons to enumerate. Still, let's hope that this time, the authority will be true, unpretentious and honest to their intention of pursuing this dream. Meron namang feasibility study ang proyectong 'to. Sana kasali na doon at may tugon na yoong mga concerns mo. :) -------------- At long last! Alingatong July 25th, 2009, 06:47 AM im not really from iligan pero diri ko ga.study, dont know much about the place...gaisano nga daan? katong dapit sa market?...its a no no for me.... congested na maxado ang area dun banda..."steel market" would be okay, very spacious dun (sa harap ng global steel) Thanks. Pero we have to consider also the fact that C3 will pass and end at that junction. I cannot imagine how the authority could handle the vehicular and foot traffic once C3 is operational plus the train station in action. Regarding sa C3, parang di ideal na sa junction na yan siya nagtatapos. Sana pinalampas pa nila para madevelop pa yong ibang area sa likuran. :ohno: ukay July 25th, 2009, 07:58 PM Regarding the Mindanao Rail Project, sa akong mahinumduman, gihimo ni nga plano panahon pa ni Pres. It is a city truly blessed and nurtured by Mother Nature. It is protected from typhoons by natural barriers; its terrain is hugged by a long stretch of shoreline along the Iligan Bay. Its mountains and lush forests hide numerous waterfalls in its embrace, earning for itself the title “City of Waterfalls.” The most famous, enchanting and the most awesome of these is the Maria Cristina Falls along the Agus River. Agus and Maria Cristina are sources of hydro electric power for most of Mindanao’s requirements. Spring like Timoga and Taytay are sources of cool and pristine water for swimming resorts that provide relief from summer heat. The coastline as well offers beaches and picnic grounds. The rich soil, even rainfall distribution, and ideal topography provide suitable conditions for diverse agricultural ventures. With all the natural wonders and blessing bestowed upon the city, the most prized asset of iligan is still the warm and vibrant hospitality of its people. Both natives and people of different ethnicity all come together to make iligan their home. http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/hdcth3.jpg City Hall Ground Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:12 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/hdamphi1.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/hdamphi2.jpg Anahaw Open Amphi-theater Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:15 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/hdplaza1.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/hdplaza2.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/hdplaza3.jpg Iligan City Public Plaza with Maria Cristina Hotel Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:29 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/1hiway30.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/1hiway30a.jpg Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:31 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/msucoop.jpg Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:36 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/ip3.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/ip2.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/ip1.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/ip.jpg Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:39 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/uni1.jpg http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/uni2.jpg Alingatong July 27th, 2009, 03:47 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/gaspa.jpg Gazpacho's Bar and Restaurant g0Rs July 27th, 2009, 03:47 PM Sumigla bigla ang thread na ito...:) Dionne Monsanto (Pinoy Big Brother Housemate) is in Iligan. Congratulations!!! Alingatong July 29th, 2009, 12:29 PM Global Steel to raise production on expected upturn in demand Jul 29, 2009 (The Manila Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- NSTLQ | Quote | Chart | News | PowerRating -- GLOBAL Steel Philippines Inc. said it would invest about $108 million to increase its production of flat products in the second half of the year in preparation for an expected upturn in steel demand. The Indian-led company succeeded shuttered National Steel Corp. after the latter's Malaysian investors backed out of the Philippines' first integrated steel manufacturing plant based in Iligan City. In a statement, Global Steel said it would import between August and December a total of 230,000 metric tons of slabs, which the company will use in manufacturing about 46,000 metric tons of flat products starting August. Global Steel said it would source the raw materials from multiple suppliers, possibly from India, Italy, Turkey and Venezuela. "Given the global volatility of prices, we are tying up slab supply, quality assurance and price competitiveness well in advance in order to protect the company from future volatility and [to ensure] consistent production, supply sustainability and profitability across the cycle," Sangram Mohanty, Global Steel vice president for corporate communications, said. In a telephone interview, Mohanty said Global Steel had operated on a per-order basis in the first half of this year, due to a slump in demand as a result of the worldwide economic slowdown. But Mohanty said the company has seen indications that the steel market is improving lately. He added that economies in Southeast Asia, where Global Steel ships flat products, have been faring better. The company manufactures flat steel for domestic consumption and exports to Southeast Asia. Mohanty said the company is planning to increase its production of flat products to about 80,000 metric tons a month starting January next year. Global Steel is also looking for new Asian markets for its products, he said. "With improvement in consumption and assured supply of slabs, we are not thinking of 'survival mode' any longer as we are confident of the market and prospects ahead," Lalit Sehgal, Global Steel managing director, said. "We are also committed to pursue integrated manufacturing process right from mining as soon as the recession is over and the market improves," Sehgal added. http://www.tradingmarkets.com (http://www.tradingmarkets.com/.site/news/Stock%20News/2446029/) Alingatong July 29th, 2009, 02:09 PM http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/skyscraper/skyline.jpg Iligan Sky iliganon Boy July 30th, 2009, 06:30 AM GREAT NEWS! Subling gi-insister sa mga opisyal sa siyudad nga kaniadto pa unta sa tuig 1995 angayang mamugna ang lone district sa Iligan sanglit sa maong panahon nagbaton na man ang Iligan og populasyon nga kapin sa 250 mil nga mao’y usa labing mahinungdanong rekisito sa balaod. GORIT August 1, 2009, 6:14pm CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY – Officials of Iligan City and Region 10 office of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH 10) led the blessing and re-opening of the newly repaired Agus Bridge on Saturday after it was bombed several months ago by still unidentified persons. The national government immediately allocated some P30 million for the repair of the damaged bridge in Iligan City. DPWH 10 Regional Director Jerome dela Rosa said the reopening of the bridge would eventually restore the normal flow of traffic in the area. Among those who attended the blessing include Dela Rosa, Iligan City district engineer Maribel Ong, Iligan City Vice Mayor Henry Dy, contractor Almita Dasmariñas, DPWH 10 Assistant Regional Director Magbalo Maneri and other local officials. “Our government is sincere in its efforts to develop, maintain and establish more infrastructure projects in Mindanao. That is why the restoration of this bridge is immediately acted upon,” the DPWH regional director said. He said this became possible because of the genuine leadership of President Arroyo to give Mindanao an utmost attention as promised during the election period many years ago. Meanwhile, Dy also thanked the national government for its sincerity to help regain peace in Mindanao. “We need true leaders in our country in order to move forward,” Dy added. Maneri also said that the project was immediately turned over to the city government of Iligan for use of the local residents. Alingatong August 7th, 2009, 02:05 AM RP steel imports to rise if. . . Written by Max V. de Leon / Reporter Friday, 07 August 2009 00:56 THE national goal of becoming self-reliant in steel would trump any plan to remove tariff protection for the local industry, specifically Indian-owned Global Steel Philippines Inc. (GSPI), according to the company management. “Without the GSPI, which bought the mothballed National Steel Corp. [NSC] plant in Iligan in 2004, the country would have to depend on imports for its steel raw-material requirements,” said Lalit Kumar Sehgal, managing director. At the hearing for the petition to eliminate the 7-percent duty on hot-rolled coils (HRC) and cold-rolled coils (CRC) at the Tariff Commission in Quezon City on Thursday, GSPI officers warned that without the tariff protection, the company could disintegrate in the face of foreign competition. The country will then lose the chance to have a fully integrated industry that GSPI is planning to achieve through its planned $220-million investment. “So I assume that the government will not do that [remove the tariff protection]. It’s of national interest that they should not do that and any tariff modification [under the law] should serve national interest,” said Sehgal after the public hearing. Also, Sehgal said other countries are taking initiatives to protect their domestic steel industries so the Philippines should do the same. The local producers of finished steel products, including the Filipino Galvanizers Institute, have asked that the 7-percent most-favored-nation rates on HRC and CRC be reduced, and these products be transferred to the Asean-Korea and Asean-China free-trade agreements list. The GSPI was granted tariff protection in 2007 to support its operation. Tariff Commission Chairman Edgardo Abon said they will check out if the operations of GSPI’s Iligan plant really deserve the tariff protection before making a recommendation. It must be producing at least 50 percent of its rated capacity, which is the requirement set when it was given the tariff protection. The commission will also find out if the company is requiring its Filipino buyers to give a 50-percent advance payment, as some reports have it, so the commission can determine if the GSPI is sufficiently capitalized to supply the domestic requirements. “Our recommendation will be based purely on merit. Politics is outside our purview and we will view this purely on the economic effects of the petition,” said Abon. Another goal of the commission, he said, is to find a way to correct the tariff distortion in which the steel raw materials such as CRC and HRC are levied a tariff while the finished steel products from China and Korea under the free-trade agreements are not. http://businessmirror.com.ph (http://businessmirror.com.ph/home/top-news/14305-rp-steel-imports-to-rise-if--.html) Alingatong August 7th, 2009, 04:01 AM The old building beside Crown Paper & Stationer - Aguinaldo , which has been acquired by Crown just recently, is being torn down.
