from where was this data taken? please quote your source.
it's not that I doubt MSU-IIT's position (I'm mighty proud of that school, having 1 kid who graduated from it, and another one still in college), but the info is apparently taken from a BLOG, which says it was taken from CHED. meanwhile, CHED says they are still not finished with the ranking (see PhilStar article (http://www.philstar.com/Article.aspx?articleId=484297&publicationSubCategoryId=200)!). if anyone can present the CHED rankings, that'd be great.

Alingatong August 9th, 2009, 03:53 AM Lanao Norte to host youth leadership summit
by Breezy C. Jimenez
Tubod, Lanao del Norte (7 August) -- The first Youth Leadership Summit in the province will be catered by the provincial government of Lanao del Norte at the Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) grounds, on August 7 to 10.
The activity is organized by the army's 104th (Sultan) Brigade headed by Col. Benito Antonio de Leon, with more than 400 participants who are Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) members or Out-of-School Youth (OSY) in Lanao del Norte and Iligan City, age ranging from 16 to 23.
The 462 barangays of Lanao del Norte will have one representative each while the rest of the participants are from Iligan City.
The registration of the participants will start on August 6, while the opening ceremony will be held on August 7 with guests: Representative Abdullah D. Dimaporo, 2nd District-Lanao del Norte, Major Gen. Romeo D. Lustestica, Commander of army's 1st Infantry 'Tabak' Division (1ID), Army and Assistant Secretary Mohammad Hanny Camid, Chairman, National Youth Commission (NYC).
Under the theme "Peace and Prosperity: Our shared responsibility…," the activity is aimed at inculcating in the youth their responsibility in the attainment of peace for the reason that without peace, prosperity is hampered.
Likewise, since both Muslim and Christian cultures will be incorporated in the summit, this will prove that there is unity despite diversity, and peace and development in the province will be achieved if there is unity between and among Muslims and Christians alike.
Sponsors of the activity include the provincial government of Lanao del Norte, NYC, Department of Education (DepEd), Center of Moderate Muslim (CMM Phil), Office on Muslim Affairs (OMA), Asia America Initiative (AAI), Young Moro Professional Network (YMPN), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), National Counter-Terrorism Action Group (NACTAG), Philippine National Police (PCR-PNP), Armed Forces of the Philippines (CMO-AFP) and the 1st Infantry (TABAK) Division. Mas maganda na ang mga daan natin ngayon sa Iligan. Some roads are now overlayed with asphalt and meron na ring mga road markings.
Marami ring underconstruction na mga commercial buildings aside from the 3 posted here (Highway30, Imperial Plaza & Unitop).

The Central Material Recovery and Composting Facility (or CMRCF) located at Sitio Bangko, Barangay Bonbonon, Iligan City is almost done and hope to be operational soon.

Alingatong August 12th, 2009, 12:33 PM Iligan NDPR Week culminates at camping site
by Lorry V. Gabule
Iligan City (11 August) -- The Persons with Disability (PWDs) had taken themselves out for an over-night stay at a camping site, during the city's culmination activity of the National Disability Prevention and Rehabilitation Week (NDPR).
Eva dela Cruz, supervising social welfare officer and in-charge of the PWDs of the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWD) in Iligan City, said that the activity was an event where PWDs are being recognized and given importance to enjoy the same rights and opportunities with other human beings.
Around sixty (60) PWDs joined the camping at the Centennial Park, Dalipuga, this city and participated in parlor games and showing of talents.
Meanwhile, the city government's effort towards disability prevention, rehabilitation and equalization of opportunities has embodied in with the implementation of Republic Act No. 9442, otherwise known as the Magna Carta for Disabled Persons and for Other Purposes.
RA 9442 states that every person with disability shall enjoy a special discount of five percent (5%) of the regular retail price of basic necessities and prime commodities listed of this Order.
The total amount of purchase shall not exceed the amount of PhP1,300.00 per calendar week without carry over of the unused amount.
To avail of the discount, the PWD must present his / her identification card issued by the National Council on Disability Affairs (NsCDA) or by the authorized office of Local Government Units (LGUs) where she / he resides.
Other activity incurred for the NDPR week-long celebration was the registration of new PWDs living in Iligan. They were encouraged to submit themselves for issuance of identification card to avail other privileges and incentives intended for them, dela Cruz explained.
"With the implementation of RA 9442, we likewise encourage malls and other grocery stores to have an Express Lane for the persons with disability," dela Cruz added.

g0Rs August 12th, 2009, 01:51 PM DTI Iligan announces transfer of regulation of real estate practice to PRC
Iligan City (11 August) -- With the passage of Republic Act 9646 also known as the Real Estate Service Act of the Philippines, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) transferred the regulation of the real estate practice to the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
Ruel B. Paclipan, provincial director, DTI Iligan City / Lanao del Norte Provincial Office, said that RA 9646 repeals Section 3(e) of Act No. 2728, the law from which DTI draws its authority to regulate the real estate service, thus, we have to transfer the function to the PRC.
He explained further, under Section 17, issuance of the Certificate of Registration and Professional Identification Card of real estate practitioners will also be released by the PRC.
"A certificate of registration shall be issued to examinees who pass the licensure examination for real estate service subject to payment of fees prescribed by the Commission," said Paclipan.
The certificate of registration shall remain in full force and effect until revoked or suspended in accordance with the Act.
Paclipan added that a professional identification card bearing the registration number, date of issuance and expiry date, duly signed by the chairperson of the PRC, be issued to every registrant upon payment of the required fees.
The professional identification card shall be renewed every three (3) years and upon satisfying the requirements of the Board such as, but not limited to, attendance in this program.
Also, RA 9646 mandates DTI's Bureau of Trade Regulation and Consumer Protection to transfer all pertinent records to the PRC ninety (90) days from the effectivity of the law.
Starting, July 30, 2009, DTI field offices will no longer accept applications for license, whether initial or renewal or real estate consultants, appraisers, brokers and salespersons, Paclipan disclosed. (PIA Lanao del Norte / DTI Iligan)

g0Rs August 13th, 2009, 03:49 AM Aboitiz profits up with move to abort sale of transport unit
HIGHER PROFITS posted by various subsidiaries, along with a one-off gain from its transportation subsidiary, pushed up the net income of holding company Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc. from January to June.
In a disclosure yesterday, Aboitiz Equity Ventures said profits climbed by more than half to P3.4 billion in the first half. The company, which has yet to release its financial statement, said higher profits translated to P0.62 in earnings per share for the period.
Aboitiz Equity Ventures said it had a nonrecurring net income of P430 million because of the termination of the planned sale of unit Aboitiz Transport System Corp.
Even with the one-time gain, Aboitiz Equity Ventures said power unit Aboitiz Power Corp. accounted for 42% of the holding company’s total earnings. This was followed by the banking group with an earnings contribution amounting to 31%. The food and transport groups’ income share were at 13% each.
Of its four major businesses, only Aboitiz Power Corp. reported lower profits during the first half. Income contribution from the power segment declined by 22% to P1.2 billion after power generation yielded lower revenues.
The financial services group meanwhile contributed P889 million in net earnings or a 96% improvement year-on-year after its bank. Union Bank of the Philippines had reported an 83% increase in net income.
The unlisted thrift bank City Savings Bank also contributed some P30 million to the holding company, up by 49% from the same period last year. It was attributable mainly to the 64% increase in interest income on loans.
Meanwhile, the 28% drop in fuel costs, coupled with improved asset utilization and the development of a "value-added supply chain and logistics business" resulted in the transport group’s strong showing during the period.
Contributions from Aboitiz Transport jumped to P384 million from P19 million in the same period last year.
The holding company said Aboitiz Transport showed an improvement in freight shipping operations while its "expanded value-added business" helped offset the decline in the company’s international chartering business.
Lastly, income contribution from food subsidiary Pilmico Foods Corp. recorded a 67% increase to P386 million in the first half.
Aboitiz Equity Ventures said its feeds businesses recorded a significant improvement in earnings, which tempered the 14% decline in its flour business.
"The feeds business recorded an improvement in earnings on the back of improved margins due to higher prices, coupled with freight cost savings resulting from the operation of the Iligan feedmill," the holding company said.
Shares in the company yesterday did not move at P7 apiece. — Kristine Jane R. Liu

tough August 14th, 2009, 12:01 PM Meet the TESDA Idols
August 14, 2009, 8:57am
While the Filipino is known for being a multi-talented race, there is another good reason to recognize and celebrate the Filipino creativity.
The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) recognizes the talent of Filipino skilled workers as it promotes the successful skills training-to-job employment-journey of 12 candidates who took TESDA courses.
Coming from different regions across the nation, the 12 are competing for the National level TESDA Idol Search slated on August 25, on TESDA’s 15th anniversary.
Winners will receive cash prizes, trophies and TESDA Pangulong Gloria scholarships from TESDA Director General Augusto Boboy Syjuco.
Emmanuel Noel A. Clemente, Ilocos Norte, the inventor-instructor
As early in high school, Noel decided to pay for his own tuition by working. “Hindi kaya ng magulang ko ang pag-aralin ako sa college pero di ko sila sinisisi sapagkat dahil sa kanila, namulat ako kung paanong mabuhay,” Noel humbly says.
Since college education is too costly, Noel took up the two-year TESDA industrial technology course major in Electronics Technology.
At present, Noel is an instructor at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) teaching refrigeration and air-conditioning.
Noel’s most notable accomplishment is fashioning a two-in-one dryer made out of junk refrigerator boxes.
His achievement caught the attention of the MMSU management. A module entitled “Development and Validation of Modules for Refrigeration Technology,” inspired by Noel’s innovation, is now being used for instructional purposes.
Bernardo C. Bacani, Quirino Province, multi-skilled mentor
A champion coach, an inventor, a teacher, Bernardo invented an improvised timing light for auto engine and wood generator.
But before all these blessings came to his life, Bernardo experienced personal difficulties. “Noon masama loob ko sa tatay ko dahil hindi niya ako pinag-aral ngunit dahil sa umunlad ang buhay ko sa tulong ng TESDA, nawala ang galit ko sa buhay” he shares.
A graduate of a two-year course in Automotive Mechanic at TESDA, Bernardo worked as an auto welder before he pursued Bachelor of Science degree in Education major in Automotive. Today, he is so thankful of TESDA and Tito Boboy Syjuco. “Kung wala ang TESDA, wala kami,” he admits.
Nelson P. Guzman, Pampanga, instructor
Nelson learned first-hand the responsibilities of supporting people who are in need of help. He was left in the care of his grandparents who needed help in tending their farm in Malasiqui, Pangasinan. He took his responsibility seriously, even harvesting the highest corn crop in the whole town at one point!
Growing up, Nelson devoted his spare time working to support his studies by selling wares on weekends and foodstuffs on holidays. He also worked in an automotive shop where he discovered his talent in welding and metal works.
To develop his skills further, Nelson came to Manila and was granted a TESDA certification in 2005.
He went abroad to advance his skills but he soon realized that his heart is still for his country and its people. He came back and is now teaching Shielded Metal Arc Welding at the New Era University in Pampanga.
Garry O. Buena, Camarines Sur, manager and proprietor
A clerk at the provincial capitol of Camarines Sur, then 17-year-old Garry enjoyed working and studying at the same time. His father was then an OFW, but Garry realized that he also had to do his share to help augment the family income.
Fortunately, TESDA was offering two-year technical-vocational courses at an affordable tuition. Garry enrolled in Electronics and eventually found work in the information technology (IT) and engineering industries.
“Sa TESDA, application ang tinuturo kaya nagagawa mo kaagad ang natutunan mo at pwede mong i-actual; yan talaga ang gusto ko kaysa sa mga theoretical na tinuturo sa mga university,” he shared.
Today, as manager and proprietor of SpringLuck Engineering, Garry is involved in sales and services repair, installation and maintenance of refrigeration and air conditioner, transport air conditioner, electrical building wiring, computers, CCTV system and PABX system.
Rodante F. Andres, Capiz, education officer
Rodante’s life before was all about strug gling with poverty. He tilled the soil in their farm for a very long time, almost killing his hope for a better life.
“Iyong paghihirap ang gusto kong baguhin at malaking impluwensya ang nabigay sa akin ng TESDA upang makamit ang pagbabago sa buhay ko” he recalls.
A nominee in the President Ramon Magsaysay Outstanding Filipino Worker Award (“Employed’’ category), Rodante enrolled at the Western Visayas College of Technology in Iloilo City and graduated
with a Diploma in Technology with Automotive Technology. He supported himself by working as a laborer in small construction projects. After graduation, he worked as a highway mechanic, a mason, and a security guard.
Today, Rodante is a holder of TESDA Competency Assessment National Certificate for Masonry NC IIII. He has received a couple of awards for his skills, the latest of which was topping the Search for Galing Mason of Holcim, a multinational cement company.
Edgar P. Acero, Cebu City, junior supervisor
To be able to study, Edgar worked at a friend’s shop repairing appliances in the morning, and took up Consumer Electronics in the evening. Starting work as a service technician, Edgar is now a junior supervisor at Smart Philippines.
Rene A. Hapona, Zamboanga, entrepreneur
“Success is knowing one’s goal and how to achieve it” quips Rene Hapona, owner of Rene Woodcraft and Furniture.
Rene took up Furniture and Cabinet Making at the Kabasalan National Vocational School. With determination, creativity and resourcefulness, he accepted commercial jobs while studying. Today, he has his own business, supervising his own employees.
“Dahil sa TESDA nakamit ko ang tatlong tagumpay sa aking buhay: nagkaroon ako ng asawa, tatlong anak at nakamit ko ang pakiramdam ng isang businessman” Rene says.
Remegio B. Gonzales, Iligan City, director of School of Engineering Technology, MSU
Dr. Gonzales always knows how to follow his heart. He took up a two-year tech-voc Industrial Electricity course for instance, but he had always wanted to be in the building construction field. He then took up higher studies, until he earned a Ph.d in Education. Awarded the Most Outstanding
Electrical Practitioner in Education, Dr. Gonzales was a guest researcher in Taiwan for three months and also co-founded the Masters Technological Institute and Bohol Northeastern Colleges.
Dr. Gonzales is a man worthy of recognition, from an electrician/laboratory technician, to a director of the School of Engineering Technology.
Peter M. Guimare, Davao City, food and beverage supervisor
The difficult life Peter experienced in childhood did not discourage him at all. In his childhood, he experienced crossing highly flooded streets, or walking along long roads, just to reach school.
A teacher gave him an opportunity to study. From a dining waiter position, Peter became a head waiter, until he reached his present position as Food & Beverage supervisor at Crown Regency Residences Hotel in Davao. Thanks to his perserverance to take up a tech-voc course in Hotel and Restaurant services.
Janice E. Reynes, Kidapawan City, a teacher and coordinator
Janice is the only woman in the Tesda Idol Search. She is a graduate of Food Preparation and Service Technology at University of Southern Mindanao-Kidapawan City Campus.
Young Janice was the “assistant cook’’ at ther mother’s small kakanin. Growing up, Janice used her skills wisely, even winning skills competition in her province, including at the 4th ASEAN Skills Competition in the field of Restaurant Service at the University of Southern Mindanao.
Janice was then hired as Tourism Hotel and Restaurant Technology teacher and at the same time an OJT coordinator at North Point College of Arts and Technology.
Having a teaching career, Janice says she is so proud of acquiring the skills taught by TESDA because she is able to pass on to her students her knowledge. Janice now teaches at the University of Southern Mindanao.
Raul B. Samson, Baguio City, supervisor
Before success came to Raul’s life, he had to go through several heartaches. Because his parents could not support the studies of their nine children, Raul decided to leave his family behind. But living with relatives, Raul found himself being maltreated so he decided to go back to his hometown in La Union where he decided to pursue studies on his own.
Raul finished his General Machine Shop training at NYMC as a scholar of Pilipinas Shell Foundation. He was later on employed by a MOOG Controls, an international company engaged in manufacturing of precision control components and systems for aircraft, space and industrial applications. His tech-voc training paved the way to his finishing a baccalaureate degree and providing well for his family. Today, he continues to share his knowledge and skills by becoming a trainer of tech-voc students.
Alan A. Atega , Butuan City, director/ school administrator, AMA-CLC
Alan started tinkering with electronic and mechanical gadgets at his father’s shop at a very young age. He then took up a non-formal education electronics course at NYMC and went on to graduate while he was still in high school.
Today, as school director of AMA-CLC in Butuan City, Alan applies his technical expertise in infusing innovation, reaping staggering results for the school. His management style and approach was initially met with high brow, but then the branch was able to save money on expenditure and consequently increase the enrollment.
Because of his being an accredited assessor during his technical years, Alan required his faculty members to be fully subscribed to the TESDA standard by undergoing accreditation themselves.
Recently, he found the opportunity of supporting TESDA’s ambitious Jobs Bridging and Internship Program in CARAGA. His school will be a hub for jobs online starting this September 2009 via his savvy linkages.
“As an instructor, I would tell my students sa TESDA siguradong gaganda buhay mo, ang tech-voc course ay halos six months lang. Kapag hindi kaya ng magulang mo ang apat na taong college tuition, hindi masisira ang loob na abutin pa rin ang pangarap dahil alam mo na kaya mo na kaagad kumita mula sa natutunan mo sa TESDA” he advises.

Hope maging PEACEFUL ang celebration ninyo jan...
Our celebration has always been PEACEFUL. In fact the DIYANDI FESTIVAL is a unique celebration where you can find the LUMADS, MUSLIMS, and CHRISTIANS move altogether to adore SR. SAN MIGUEL. That is the essence of SR. SAN MIGUEL to the tri-people of ILIGAN since the early times. The Lumads pay respect to the PATRON SAINT, the MUSLIMS give their 'halad' to the image, and the coastal living CHRISTIANS give their thanks to SR. SAN MIGUEL. Altogether to dance the DIYANDI DANCE in front of the image.
For us Iliganons, whether be it a MUSLIM, CHRISTIAN, or LUMAD, the celebration since the start of time, remind us of the PEACEFUL ILIGAN free from the thought of cultural differences and free to co-exist in a camaraderie despite the diverse cultures.

Fahdingding August 19th, 2009, 03:14 AM Our celebration has always been PEACEFUL.
For us Iliganons, whether be it a MUSLIM, CHRISTIAN, or LUMAD, the celebration since the start of time, remind us of the PEACEFUL ILIGAN free from the thought of cultural differences and free to co-exist in a camaraderie despite the diverse cultures.

g0Rs August 20th, 2009, 03:53 PM PGMA to DPWH: Speed up Iligan C3 road construction
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) today to expedite the immediate resolution of the right of way problem in the construction of the Iligan Circumferential Road (C3).
Reacting to the slow construction of the C3, the President asked the DPWH to prioritize the issue surrounding the right of way problem of the infrastructure project in order to hasten the vehicular traffic in the city.
The President also tasked the DPWH to speed-up the construction of roads particularly in areas where traffic has been frequently experienced by motorists.
The President assured that the government is actively working to address the right-of-way acquisition problem. She reported that more than 30 percent of the project has been accomplished.
“The people of Iligan can rest assured that we will overcome these obstacles to the construction of this road and I will see to it that the project is completed at the earliest possible time,” she said.
The President said the national government has allocated some P363 million for the Iligan C3 Road. The C-3 is a part of the administration’s larger plan to enhance the country’s infrastructure. (PNA)

Here’s another reason for all of us Mindanaoans to rejoice and certainly be proud of our fellow Mindanao residents! A school in Mindanao is gunning to be a part of the renowned Guinness Book of World Records! Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in Iligan City, Mindanao will attempt the “Most Number of People Singing the National Anthem Simultaneously” on September 1, 2009.
The event, which will start at 9AM, will be held at the MSU-IIT Gymnasium and organizers are urging interested participants to wear white shirts and maong pants. Organizers of this Guinness World Records attempt are hoping to gather at least 3,000 people.
The event, the first ever attempt by a Mindanao school, will also be held in line with the celebration of the month of peace (September). Designed also to build unity, peace and harmony among the people in Mindanao, the event is sponsored by various stakeholders in Iligan City.
Let’s hope that MSU-IIT Iligan City garners all the support and that they become successful in their quest. Good luck!

AGUS 5 Hydroelectric Plant
Agus V Hydroelectric Plant is one of the seven hydroelectric generating plants harnessing raw water power potential along the Agus river.
It is a two-unit run-of-the-river type with a combined capacity of 55 megawatts and is situated between the tailwater of Agus IV HEP and the headwater of Agus VI HEP. It is located at Ditucalan, Iligan City some 13 kilometers from Iligan City proper and it is within the proximity of the famous Tinago Falls in the west and the Maria Cristina Falls in the North.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/Agus6.jpg
AGUS 6 Hydroelectric Plant
Of the seven (7) hydro sites constructed along the Agus River, the Agus VI was first to be developed and completed because the site was the most feasible, the simpliest and the most economical to construct and the nearest to expected power consumers. Construction of the project was authorized by the then, Pres. Elpidio Quirino in 1950.
The Agus VI H.E. Plant, originally known as the Maria Christina Falls Hydroelectric Plant, named after the famous scenic waterfalls just 100 meters in the background. The falls cascades around 320 feet down a sheer clift, and is only 8.5 kilometers southwest of Iligan City.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/Agus7.jpg
AGUS 7 Hydroelectric Plant
Downstream of the existing Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant is Agus VII Hydroelectric Plant, constructed near the mouth of Agus river located at Fuentes, Iligan City.
The plant is the most downstream of the series of hydroelectric plants built by the National Power Corporation in the Agus River from Marawi City to Iligan City.
On January 16,1979, the construction of this project was started. The civil works was awarded and constructed by CDCP, which includes the construction of the main powerhouse, dam structures, and diversion tunnel. Electro -mechanical erection works were performed by the National Power Corporation personnel under supervision of Italian and Japanese consultants. The main equipment were supplied by Gruppo Industrie Elettro (GIE), Italy and the various control equipment by Fuji Electric Co. Ltd., Japan. The construction cost of the plant was P624.22 million.
Alingatong August 25th, 2009, 06:07 AM MSU-IIT’s Octava wins gold, silvers in int’l choir tilt
by Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews
Tuesday, 25 August 2009 09:33
ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/24 August)—The Octava, resident choral group of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology and the representative of Mindanao to a five-day International Choral Competition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) won two silvers and gold medals.
Professor Rhodora N. Englis, MSU-IIT campus secretary announced “the Octava won in all the three categories of the competition. They got two silvers and one gold.”
“This is something for Mindanawons to be proud of because the gold certificate is given only to those who have reached the international standards. There were five renowned judges of the competition, two of whom came from Europe and two from Asia,” she said.
Prof. Francisco Englis, director of the Octava and also an English professor at the university, said “the contest also graded the contestants and it can make us to the World Choir Olympic.”
“It was very challenging because we competed with UP and University of Santo Tomas (UST) choral groups. The latter has won as the world champion of Gregorian Chanting. But we love singing with them especially that we are the lone contestant from Mindanao allowed by CCP,” Englis said.
Octava sang Elijah Rock, a 16th century renaissance song.
They also sang Filipino folk songs such as Mamayug Akun, a Maranao courtship song; Dael, a Maguindanao song; and Si Filemon, a song that tells the life of small fisherfolk.
In the avant garde category, they sang “Goani—A long time ago”, a song that tells about the Maranao tribe who dwelt in peace and were later disturbed with conflicts that ended in a bloody war.
This was originally sang by Octava in 1983 and made them champion in a competition organized by former First Lady Imelda Marcos.
In this song, the choir magnificently accentuated the voices of playing children and the Muslims’ call to prayer with the chanting of “Allahuaakbar!,” a depiction of the tribe’s sunny lives. As the song sailed into its depths, the choir stomped their feet and occasionally clapped their hands to dramatize and reecho violence until their voices sank into sad wailings for the wounded and the dead.
Goani is composed by Englis himself and sourced from influences derived from Maranao music and rhythm.
“It’s a sound in some parts of Mindanao. It is still best for this Mindanao contingent to sing this from our heartfelt experiences,” he said.
The same song was sung by the UP Concert Chorus in an international competition where they won 1st place under the direction of the late Rey Paguio.
In the recent competition, Octava dedicated “Goani’ to Dr. Ramon Santos, a world-renowned Filipino composer whose major works have been performed in different countries.
Before the actual competition in Manila, Octava held a rehearsal cum critique for all their songs at MSU-IIT’s College of Education amphitheatre with former choir singers from other universities of the country, artists from the United Church of Christ in the Philippines, students, teachers, city officials, religious leaders, and local artists as observers.
They got a standing ovation from the audience in that rehearsal. Viewers were later allowed to comment after their presentations to perfect the choir’s voices, movements, clothes, and stage projection.
Octava choir members are scholars of MSU-IIT. It is a resident choir of IIT along with other art groups such as IPAG, Kalimulan Cultural Group, and Echoes. (Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews)

MSU-IIT’s Octava wins gold, silvers in int’l choir tilt
Wednesday, 26 August 2009
The Octava, resident choral group of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology and the representative of Mindanao to a five-day International Choral Competition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) won two silvers and gold medals.
It is a resident choir of IIT along with other art groups such as IPAG, Kalimulan Cultural Group, and Echoes.///MindaNews (Violeta M. Gloria)

Iligan City , Philippines – Some 3,000 students of the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) here will attempt to break into the Guinness Book of World Records on Sept. 1 when they will sing the National Anthem in unison.
Arnold Garbanzos, president of the Rotary Club of Iligan, who is spearheading the feat, said they hope to break the record for the “most number of people singing the national anthem simultaneously” set by 264 people in Hatikva, Israel on May 7, 2008.
The Israeli feat was meant to bridge linguistic and cultural differences among the Jewish people.

(mta)

MSU-IIT’s Octava wins gold, silvers in int’l choir tilt
Wednesday, 26 August 2009
The Octava, resident choral group of Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology and the representative of Mindanao to a five-day International Choral Competition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) won two silvers and gold medals.
It is a resident choir of IIT along with other art groups such as IPAG, Kalimulan Cultural Group, and Echoes.///MindaNews (Violeta M. Gloria)

Iligan’s Dyandi Festival opens by honoring media
ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews/31 August) – It was the turn of media workers here to be feted to a night of songs and dances when the city opened the month-long Dyandi Festival with Pakighimamat sa Prensa (Meeting the Press) at Elena Tower Inn.
Erlito Dalangin, barangay captain of Suarez and head of the Dyandi Festival management declared “tonight is the opening salvo of Dyandi, our feast. And we dedicate this night to media workers of this city.”
“With the theme ‘Tuyhakaw Iligan, Cge Go!’, this city must rise for peace and development through media’s indispensable role to showcase the city’s wholesome image and subsequently help improve our economy by enticing investors with what we could offer,” Dalangin said.
He said “Cebu succeeded when media workers helped promote its potentials as an island. We hope we could do the same.”
“We hereby declare the Dyandi festival open with media workers eager and zealous to promote the glory of this city,” he said.
Media workers received a red carpet welcome and were ushered in by the top twelve candidates for the Miss Iligan beauty contest.
City Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz called thenight a “rare occasion to gather media workers, whether they’d be critical or appreciative, to honor them as partners of development. This is a special night because we are asking for your support to promote our feast as the most joyous in our history but at the same time with minimal cost.”
“We will make Iligan prosperous, beautiful and peaceful despite events in the past years. This is the reason why we have also here with us Col. Benito De Leon, commanding officer of the 104th Infantry Brigade and our new city police director because we’d seek their pro-active support for the preservation of our peace.”
“We should be careful, vigilant and alert. I take off my hat and salute media of this city, our partner in making the 2009 fiesta peaceful, festive and well-promoted. Tuyhakaw Iligan, Cge Go!” Cruz exclaimed.
Agnes Maingat, head of the city tourism office, presented the calendar of activities for the whole month which features cultural shows, free medical services, and various programs that will culminate with a street dancing in honor of the city’s patron Saint Michael.
Rep. Vicente Belmonte (1st District of Lanao del Norte) asked everyone to put behind political differences.
“We should not get embroiled with politics as we enjoy our feast. I ask media to report the best and what is beautiful in Iligan city,” Belmonte said.
“We thank the city government for recognizing the media’s role in building our community. This is our first time ever to be treated so importantly,” said Leo Pairat, a broadcaster and anchorman of a local station here, in response to the city officials’ statements.
Octava Choral society, which recently bagged gold and silver in an international choral competition at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, opened the occasion followed by a festive lion and dragon dance by Chinese pupils, their customary way of dispelling misfortune.
Traditional Higaonon and Maranao dances performed by the Kaamulan Cultural Group, a multi-awarded dance troupe from Mindanao State University-Institute of Technology, also highlighted the event.
The multi-awarded 5th Avenue, the city’s bet to the hiphop competition to Melbourne, Australia, showed dancing prowess.
Meanwhile, the winner of the Miss Iligan tilt will receive cash gift and a round trip ticket to Macau, courtesy of Rep. Belmonte. (Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews)

Alingatong September 3rd, 2009, 01:46 AM Indian buyer of National Steel ‘committed’ to investment, denies talk of shutdown
ILIGAN — Global Steel Philippines, Inc. is optimistic on the company’s near-term prospects with the recovery of steel prices in the world market. In a phone interview, a company executive also denied reports that the Indian-owned steel mill complex would soon shut down.
Sangram Mohanty, Global Steel’s vice-president for corporate communications, said the company would even sell new steel products from its 140-hectare steel mill, previously operating as National Steel Corp. before Global Steel took over from a consortium of creditor-banks five years ago.
The Department of Labor and Employment in Northern Mindanao reported in the first quarter that Global Steel was among exporters in the region hit by the global economic downturn. As a consequence, the firm imposed reduced working hours on about 1,100 workers of the steel mill complex.
Local reports claimed the steel company has been operating on a per-order basis since the start of the year and that in effect, the workers have been on forced leave since December. In previous months, workers were even seen in front of the steel plant protesting over labor issues.
Still, Mr. Mohanty said the company is committed to its workers. "We are retaining our workers. We have not laid off a single worker and no employee has been terminated," he said. But he admitted that the company, like many export-oriented industries, was badly affected by reduced demand for steel products.
"There was reduced capacity of 40% all over the world, but now market prices are going up," said Mr. Mohanty, adding that this would allow the company to increase production in the coming months.
"This is an indication that the steel market and the steel industry [prospects] look brighter," he said.
Aside from external factors putting pressure on Global Steel’s operation, the city government is claiming that the steel mill complex still owes the local government up to P2.3 billion in taxes that have accumulated from the previous liabilities of National Steel Corp.
Global Steel acquired ownership of National Steel’s assets in 2004 after parent Global Infrastructure Holdings Ltd. won the bidding, besting LNM Holdings N.V.
It offered a P1-billion downpayment and an eight-year payment scheme for the balance of the purchase price of P12.25 billion. National Steel owed P13.8 billion to a group of banks led by the Philippine National Bank.
Mayor Lawrence L. Cruz, in previous interview, said the Iligan city government would be willing to grant a tax amnesty to Global Steel in exchange for more investments, which means further expansion of the company’s operations in the city.
"We want to be sure that if ever we would offer the tax amnesty, it would help the company reactivate and invest, produce more products, and employ more people," said Mr. Cruz. He noted that the city government had accepted a partial payment, but this does not mean condonation of the penalties that have mounted over time.
Earlier reports quoted Trade Secretary Peter B. Favila as saying that Global Steel management should open its doors to a partnership, or even selling its stake since many investors have expressed interest in taking over the Iligan steel plant. Lalit Kumar Sehgal, Global Steel’s managing director, had responded that its Philippine steel mill complex was not for sale.
Mr. Mohanty said the steel mill would soon be launching new products, noting that production stands at only 15,000 metric tons of steel.
"We’ll be increasing steel production to 80,000 metric tons next year," said Mr. Mohanty.
Global Steel is said to be investing $100 million on the Iligan plant.
"We will be producing special steel for gas cylinders and we have applied for American Bureau of Standards certification for this product, which will have a Grade-A quality," he told BusinessWorld.
"This will be the first time such product will be produced in the country," added Mr. Mohanty. — Geefe P. Alba with inputs from Mara S. Nanaman

Alingatong September 4th, 2009, 09:16 AM Treasure Steelworks hikes annual billet output
Iligan City-based Treasure Steelworks Corp. will hike its annual billet output by 15 percent after increasing capacity of its new facility, parent company TKC Steel Corp. said.
Full commercial operation of the new eccentric bottom tapping electric arc furnace is expected to begin as soon as the series of tests for direct charging of beneficiated iron are completed, TKC said in a disclosure.
The new facility has the latest supersonic oxygen injector to improve production output.
“Together with the newly commissioned ladle furnace and newly installed iron ore beneficiating facility, the billet manufacturing shop of Treasure Steel will be the most modern facility in the Philippines, equal to similar modern plants in the Asian region," it said.
Treasure Steel, which operates the former National Steel Corp., is testing locally-sourced iron ore processed from beneficiating facility as raw material for its furnaces.
“Initial test results from the use of beneficiated local iron ore are said to be encouraging," the statement said.
Tests indicated substantial cost savings and improved yields of melted steel which will reduce the company’s dependence on scrap, TKC said.
Scrap metal is fast becoming scarce and costly despite the country’s sufficient supply of iron ore to meet its subsidiary’s requirements, TKC said. - GMANews.TV

Alingatong September 4th, 2009, 01:36 PM Aboitiz Equity unit bets on gamefowl for profit boost
By CRIS LARANO
September 4, 2009, 3:00pm
MANILA (Dow Jones) – Sabin Aboitiz knows close to nothing about cockfighting. Nonetheless, he is making a big bet on the popular Filipino pastime as a future growth driver for Pilmico Foods Corp.
"Margins are higher" in gamefowl feeds, the president and chief executive of Pilmico told Dow Jones Newswires late Thursday, explaining the company's foray into the specialized segment of the P200- billion feeds market.
Pilmico is the flour and animal feeds subsidiary of investment holding firm Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV.PH), which also has interests in banking, power, property development and transportation.
Aboitiz said the move into gamefowl feed is aimed at increasing Pilmico's contribution to earnings of Aboitiz Equity, whose investments in power generation and distribution are its main income drivers.
Unlike chickens grown for food, Aboitiz explains that fighting cocks live longer – usually for several years compared with no more than two months for regular poultry – consequently, requiring more and different types of feed.
He said there are an estimated 39 million gamefowl in the Philippines, a number that is still growing as larger, more lucrative cock fights are held.
Aboitiz said Pilmico plans to expand product lines, increase output and improve its distribution network to gain a bigger share of the feed market. It claims a 4% market share of the total domestic feed market.
In the first half, Pilmico contributed 13% to Aboitiz Equity's P3.44 billion net profit, – versus a 10% share last year.
Pilmico has been developing its feed business in recent years and the start of operations last September of its 108,000 metric ton Iligan feedmill helped boost margins and pare freight costs, resulting in a 67% surge in first-half net profit to P385 million.
The feeds business accounted for 58% of Pilmico's first-half profit and 35% of its P5.53 billion revenue. In the year earlier period, the profit and revenue contribution was 1.3% and 28%, respectively.
Pilmico had said that high demand in the Visayas and Mindanao markets had pushed utilization level of the Iligan feedmill to 80% of capacity. The company is now preparing to build a second feedmill that will cost P68 million and that is scheduled for completion by the fourth quarter of 2010.
Pilmico also expects to soon finish a P90-million biogas facility in its swine farm. The facility will convert hog waste into electricity that will meet 80% of the farm's power needs. Pilmico is applying for carbon credits for this project.

The conduct of the feasibility study for the formulation of a strategic railway development plan for Mindanao will be finished within this year, this was the information relayed by Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Usec. Guiling Mamondiong.
During the Regional Development Council (RDC)’s 129th meeting at the Liga City Convention Center recently, the DOTC presented its strategic Railway Development Plan for Mindanao, pre-feasibility studies and technical assessments for the different railways section which is targeted for completion the 3rd quarter of this year.
According to the initial strategic railway development plan for Mindanao, the project aims to connect urban centers and provincial capitals in Mindanao such as Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog, Iligan, Cagayan de Oro, Marawi, Cotabato and Davao cities.
Three private consultancy firms—the TCGI Engineering, DMI Management Engineering and Woodfields Incorporated were named and tasked to conduct the study for the Mindanao Railway System (MRS) within five months.
At present, only the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan Corridor has finished its full-scale feasibility study while that of the Cagayan de Oro-Davao-General Santos line is ongoing and that of Iligan-Zamboanga City line is still in the technical assessment level.
When realized, travel time in the 145-kilometer Iligan-Cagayan de Oro route will be shortened by 15-20 minutes in contrast to the present three-hour travel time by bus.
During the RDC meeting, the MRS was considered a priority project as members felt the need to have a fast, efficient and cost effective integrated public transport system for Mindanao.
Last January, several Mindanao lawmakers recommended to President Gloria Arroyo the funding for the construction of the MRS.
The congressmen, led by Speaker Prospero Nograles have been pushing for the MRS project for the island’s accelerated growth and development.

BobNewYorkUSA September 4th, 2009, 04:13 PM From riding on high speed cross country trains in the UK, I can easily imagine and visualize some day taking the train from the Airport to Iligan. Just imagine the ride through some of the heavily wooded and foliage laden geography approaching Iligan City. All of a sudden it is out of the woods and Iligan is right there in front of you as you see on a digital display in each rail car flashing " Iligan City " and then hearing an announcement on the public address syteme in the train " Next station stop, Iligan City ,.................Iligan City next " !
I am sure it will seem like this project is long overdue but by it happening now or in the near future those of you that live there will be able to witness a good bit of history in the making that you will be able to tell others about for decades in the future. I am sure this will be the beginning of a whole new era for Iligan and the rest of Mindanao.
I look forward to the day I can come and ride that train.
Iligan City
Simply Amazing !

Aboitiz's food unit to expand feedmill in Iligan
Aboitiz-led Pilmico Foods Corp. will expand its feedmill facility in Iligan City in 2010 to boost its presence in the feed market, president and chief executive Sabin M. Aboitiz said Thursday night.
Aboitiz, who took over last month, said P80 million would be spent to increase output at 10,000 metric tons a month.
“I am looking at several options but I don’t want to broadcast plans to competitors," he said.
During the first semester, the food subsidiary of Aboitiz Equity Ventures Inc. contributed more at 67 percent at P386 million.
In a regulatory filing, AEV said lower average selling prices had slackened flour business earnings by 14 percent year-on-year while sales volume dragged swine business earnings by 51 percent year-on-year.
But feeds posted a significant jump in earnings on the back of improved margins due to higher prices, coupled with freight cost savings resulting from the operation of the Iligan feedmill.
The growth in earnings of feeds outpaced the decline in income of both flour and swine businesses, resulting to the over-all improvement of the food group's net income.
With the recent acquisitions in the energy sector, the Aboitiz Group has 2,600 megawatts of power.
Aboitiz said his mandate is to expand the food business as power investments become so big.
“Our market share of feeds is still very small," he added.
Pilmico is now experimenting cockfight feeds in Visayas where the feedback is “good."
“Ninety percent of the barangays have cockpits," he said.
“We are going to start branding these products such as cockfight to be able to expand. Then we are going to aqua foods for bangus. The sky is the limit. With feeds and flour, you can do whatever," he added.
While poultry feeds are just 10 percent of its business, Aboitiz sees it as a “growth" area. GMANews.TV

Alingatong September 5th, 2009, 01:42 AM Bill creating river administration authority
A bill creating a river basin management and development authority that will preserve and develop all rivers within Iligan City has been filed at the House of Representatives. Lanao del Norte Rep. Vicente F. Belmonte, Jr. (1st district) said that in filing House Bill (HB) 661, he is encouraging the government to create agencies in each local government unit to protect and promote development of river systems and natural waterways. Mr. Belmonte said that most of the heavily populated barangays in the city are suffering major flooding due to poor drainage, indiscriminate disposal of wastes in the river, and forest denudation. Under the bill, the Iligan City River Basin Management and Development Authority (ICRBMDA) shall set up a master plan to preserve, protect and develop all river systems and waterways by conducting surveys of the bounds of rivers, pinpointing pollution sources and identifying rivers that need to be rehabilitated. The measure also mandates the proposed agency to cause, oversee, coordinate, and monitor the implementation of, and periodically update the master plan of protecting the rivers and natural waterways.

Here’s another reason why you should all go and visit Iligan City, Mindanao during their fiesta month this year (September 2009 up to first week of October 2009). “Higantes” will be among the attractions in this year’s celebration of the Iligan City fiesta. These “higantes” (giants), made of paper mache, cloth and other indigenous materials, will be part of the “Kasadya Street Dancing and Merrymaking” event.
Similar to Angono, Rizal’s “Higantes,” (see inset picture) the entries will vie for a cash prize of P20,000.00.
Each “higante” entry must not exceed 12 feet in height. Organizers also say that the entries must depict two characters linked to the Iligan City fiesta namely St. Michael and Luzbel (Lucifer).
I guess this will be one fun event to take photos of! Wow, Mindanaoan would love to go and cover this Who wants to come along?
Happy fiesta Iligan!
Happy fiesta to all my fellow Mindanaoans over there

“We also realized that this is the month of being with all who are hungry and (a time) to help them.” He said.
“Allow us as your Christian brethren to be with you in your holy activity and good deeds. We also request that you include us in your prayer so that we will also become instruments in the obedience and will of God especially in the holy activity in peace of the earth especially in Mindanao,” Galensuga concluded. Alingatong September 7th, 2009, 02:26 AM ‘Ring of Fire’ shows off Asian Pottery Works
Sixteen Filipino potters and 10 other Southeast Asian ceramic artists will exhibit their wares in an international show entitled Ring of Fire at the Ayala Museum from September 21 to October 4, 2009.
The convergence of ASEAN potters in Makati is the first of its kind in the Philippines.
The participants of the ASEAN show will also interact in a two-day workshop where they will exchange information, and discuss individual techniques and the creative process underlying their works. The workshop will be held at the Luna and Amorsolo rooms of the Ayala Museum from September 22 to 23.
A display of 64works by the master potters in the region will attest to the intensity, passion, and peculiar identity of ASEAN ceramic artists. They have been influenced by ceramic artists from other parts of Asia, but now, they are drawing fire from each other.
Renowned ASEAN potters participating in the event include Ahadiat Joedawinata of Indonesia; Peter Low, James Seet, Lileng Wong, and Yeow Seng Cheah of Malaysia; Teck Heng Tan and Thomas Cheong of Singapore; Bathma Kaew-Ngok of Thailand; and Bao Toan Nguyen of Vietnam.
Filipino potters in the exhibit include Jon and wife Tessie Pettyjohn of Pansol; Hadrian and wife Camille Mendoza of Makiling; Jaime de Guzman of Candelaria, Quezon; Colorado-based Nelfa Querubin of Iloilo; Manila-based sculptress Julie Lluch of Iligan; Pete Cortes of Bulacan; Pablo Capati of Batangas; Joe Geraldo of Bacolod; Mark Valenzuela of Dumaguete; Winnie Go and Joey de Castro of Makati; Siegrid Bangyay and Lope Bosaing of Sagada.
“The primary goal of this project is to foster a community among Southeast Asian peoples that celebrates both the diversity and unity of the region through the art and craft of pottery,” says Mr. Mendoza, recipient of a Toyota Foundation networking grant in November 2007.
“A network of individuals and the organization of potters, scholars, and cultural workers in Southeast Asia will revive traditional knowledge and skills in pottery as well as teach new techniques and best practices done by contemporary ASEAN ceramic artists,” he adds.
Mendoza has touched base with contemporary potters in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. He is searching for more modern practitioners of the ancient art of pottery in Brunei and Myanmar. He has also connected with various communities of potters in the Philippines.
A website for the project: http://www.seapots.com has been created, aimed at increasing active exchanges among the region’s potters.
Also on display in the website are the works of various potters in the region including Serge Rega of Cambodia; Kurniawaty Guatama of Indonesia; Sisuk a refugee from Laos, now Thailand-based; Cindy Koh of Malaysia; folk potters from various pottery centers in Myanmar; Krisaya Luenganantakul, Takood Nui, and Vipoo Srivilasa, Atiporn Thongborisut, and Somthavin Urasyanadana of Thailand; and Van Che Nguyen of Vietnam.

TONZI September 8th, 2009, 12:45 PM TKC Steel puts furnance on stream
By JAMES A. LOYOLA

September 6, 2009, 4:41pm
TKC Steel Corporation’s subsidiary Treasure Steelworks Corporation has commissioned its new eccentric bottom tapping electric arc furnace as part of its capacity and capability enhancement projects.
In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE), TKC said full commercial operation with the new facility is expected to start as soon as the series of tests for direct charging of beneficiated iron ore are completed.
As part of the strategic plan of TKC Steel, its subsidiary is testing the use of locally sourced iron ore processed from its beneficiating facility as raw material for its furnaces.
“Scrap metal is fast becoming scarce and costly. But the country has more than enough supply of iron ore to meet TKC subsidiary’s total requirements, both present and future,” the firm said.
The firm noted that initial test results from the use of beneficiated local iron ore are encouraging and indicated substantial cost savings and improved yields of melted steel that the company is confident that it will be able to arrive at the optimum mixture of materials and additives which will reduce its dependence on scrap.
The capacity of the new furnace is 50 metric tons per heat and this increases Treasure Steelworks’ annual production output of billets by about 15 percent.
The new facility is also equipped with the latest supersonic oxygen injector that would further improve production output.
Together with the newly commissioned ladle furnace and newly installed iron ore beneficiating facility, the billet manufacturing shop of Treasure Steel will be the most modern facility in the Philippines, equal to similar modern plants in the Aseanseanseansean Region.
dark_knight_detectve September 8th, 2009, 04:13 PM Taiwanese investors visit Illana, Panguil, Iligan bays (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=r10&y=&mo=&fi=p090904.htm&no=77)
by Breezy C. Jimenez
Tubod, Lanao del Norte (4 September) -- The rich aquatic resources around Lanao del Norte has been seen for its potentials for business ventures and other investment opportunities especially for foreign investors.
Tapped for its economic viability as documented and examined by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), region 10 and the Provincial Agriculture's Office in Lanao del Norte, Illana, Panguil and Iligan Bays were visited by the Taiwanese investors to personally check the area.
Fong brothers, Roy, Jerry and Rey, together with their private consultant Drexel J. Marquez, Mariculture Consultant Perfecto Orbeta, heeding the request of 2nd District Representative Abdullah D. Dimaporo and Governor Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo, did not hesitate to check the beauty and bounty of the province on August 20-21 for the establishment of Mariculture Parks / Zones on the bays.
In the visit, the Provincial Fisheries personnel conducted an actual survey of the proposed site and proved to the investors that the 3 bays are suited to culture high value commercial fishes and crustaceans such as grouper, wrasse fish, sea bass, sea mantis, sea cucumber, lobster, crabs and prawns which are of high demand in Taiwan, China and other countries where high value fishes are a rarity.
Based on the survey, a proposal was made by the provincial government to develop a Mariculture Park / Zone which will cover 5-10% of the total marine area covering ten coastal municipalities in Panguil and Iligan Bays.
This will be materialized upon the passing of a provincial ordinance declaring the province as a Mariculture Zone.
With the realization of this project, it will be able to augment livelihood opportunities and economic status of fisherfolks identified to operate and manage the floating and fixed cages patterned after those in Sibutu, Tawitawi for the full implementation the Mariculture Park / Zone. d4rkhowl September 8th, 2009, 08:12 PM Indian buyer of National Steel ‘committed’ to investment, denies talk of shutdown
Nanaman

How could a steel company do such if even a few hundred pesos worth of spare equipment or instrument they won't purchase for the benefit of its operations? How could they reap if they won't sow unless they planned to operate the plant 'til failure.:ohno:

Alingatong September 10th, 2009, 01:41 PM DPWH, Cong.
(mta)
