Philippine national elections boost feed mill investment

10 Sep 2009

Pilmico Foods Corp. will upgrade its feed milling plant in Lanao del Norte in northern Mindanao in the Philippines until next year. It also intends to expand hog production this year to take advantage of higher spending ahead of the 2010 national elections.

Pilmico, the unlisted feed, flour, and hog production unit of the Aboitiz group, will spend P80 million (app. €1.14m) to increase the Iligan plant’s feed milling capacity by 10,000 tonnes from about 100,000 tonnes annually.

"We will have elections and I understand remittances are up again," Pilmico President and Chief Executive Sabin M. Aboitiz told reporters.

"If [consumers] buy more pork and chicken, [hog and poultry farmers] will have to buy more feeds."

"If we order the machines now, by the second quarter next year our expansion is complete," he said.

Iligan fisherfolks benefit from sustainable livelihood through ISLA

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (10 September) -- With the government's ISLA project, the income of the marginalized fisherfolks could be improved at par with the minimum wage earners.

In a simple ceremony at the wharf of the Holcim Philippines, Inc., town of Lugait, Misamis Oriental, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo awarded a certificate for the Common Service Facility and Alternative Livelihood projects, in the amount of PhP 4 million, to 17 fisherfolk associations in Iligan City as Integrated Services Livelihood Assistance (ISLA) beneficiaries.

President Arroyo awarded also four paddles to four federation presidents of fisherfolks association from Initao, Lugait, Manticao, all of Misamis Oriental and Iligan City, to represent the 148 units fishing pump boats and five units of deep-sea fishing boats under the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) ISLA project.

Sabino S. Gutierrez, chairman of the Acmac Fishermen Association, Iligan City, said their association composed of 59 members has been allotted PhP295,000.00 for the project.

This year, we acquired fishing boat and fishing gear like fish nets, fish hooks and lines amounting to P265,500.00, Gutierrez said.

He added, "We were able to put up the ISLA Mini-Mart, as our alternative livelihood project with a working capital of 26,550. It generates employment and income for the dependents of our fisher folks."

The local government has also provided us for the structure and setting up of a common marketing facility amounting to Php29,500.00, Gutierrez said.

He said that the income generated would be used for payments of social protection contributions of the beneficiaries.

All these undertakings grew into viable and sustainable livelihood, thus, improved our income, Gutierrez revealed.

"I now earn roughly PhP8,000.00 a month, as compared to previous income of PhP5,000.00 only," Gutierrez shared.

We understand this is a project implemented by DOLE, in partnership with the local government unit through the City Development and Livelihood Office (CDLO) and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR).

We strongly believe this project would contribute to the poverty alleviation efforts of the Arroyo administration in improving the socio-economic condition of the marginalized fisherfolks, bared Gutierrez.

"As an expression of gratitude to President Arroyo, we commit to strengthen and keep a tight rein on the opportunities we now achieved under her Administration," expressed Gutierrez. (PIA Lanao del Norte)

RP emerging as haven for foreign retirees

THE Philippines is forecasted to be a fast emerging haven for foreign retirees in Asia, which according to the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) will be achieved in the next five years.

Retired General Edgar Aglipay, chairman of PRA who met realtors and some retirees in Bacolod City Thursday, said it is the National Government’s thrust to invest in the retirement industry for “it will bring jobs and more profits.”

For updates from around the country, follow Sun.Star on Twitter

In fact, it will also boost the tourism industry, he said.

A flagship program of the Arroyo administration, Aglipay said he will present the program and related projects pertaining to the industry in Europe in November, bringing with him a retiree Indian national, who had been staying in the country for years, for his testimony.

“Actually, the industry is packaging the country’s tourism tied up with the retirement industry because this is what the retirees’ group wants; some sort of an entertainment, medical facility, good transportation and communication access and the kind of peace and order situation which is stable and safe,” Aglipay said.
He cited Bacolod as a potential location, claiming the city has a sound economy, green environment and a peaceful locale.

Bacolod City Councilor Jocele Batapa-Sigue, in a related development, authored a proposed ordinance that is now on second reading, entitled “Creating a Retirement Village and Medical Tourism in Bacolod.”

The PRA’s Local Integrated Retirement Areas (Liras), Aglipay said, include Subic, Clark, Tagaytay, Baguio, Davao, Cebu and Manila.

In his presentation, Aglipay reported that by 2015, a total of 869.1 million retirees will go places and spend a living for a lifetime. He enumerated them as: Europe – 80.6 million, US – 64.4 million, Taiwan – 4.3 million, China – 258 million, Japan – 40.3 million and Korea – 8.9 million.

“It’s about 1/5th of the world’s population,” Aglipay said, citing that “this would mean business opportunity.”

Of said population, Aglipay said the country under RIP (Retirement Industry Program) is targeting to reach five percent of the European retirees, China – 35 percent, Korea – 25 percent, Japan and US – 10 percent.

“Our mandate is to target foreign retirees by bringing them here in the country that will provide investments and jobs for the Filipino people”, Aglipay said.

He cited that Filipinos who work abroad and are married to foreigners can be of big help by bringing foreigner-friends and their families into the country.

The PRA is now working closely with the property development sector to open possible business opportunities like investing in the retirement industry, Aglipay said, adding that the government is “aggressively promoting the country as a haven of foreign retirees.”

PRA is a government agency whose function is on accrediting investors of the retirement industry with strict standards of accreditation requirements “specifically on project and facility accreditation”, Aglipay said.

Further, Aglipay said PRA is targeting Iligan, Cagayan De Oro and General Santos, making them as havens for the “middle eastern retirees”.

At present, the country has 45 accredited facilities that cater to foreign retirees, which include recreation centers, residential villas, condo units, resorts, wellness and care homes, among others.

Former Bacolod City Rep. John Orola Jr. and the Real Estate Brokers Association of the Philippines Inc. (REBAP Metro Bacolod Chapter) sponsored yesterday’s PRA meeting with the realtors group and retirees in Bacolod City

<SNIP>

with all those jobs and responsibilities, only 2 regular employees are manning ICTC.
Qs:
1. are they saying none of those 19 casual employees are qualified for the 3 vacant plantilla positions?
2. clearly the bulk of the work is being performed by casuals. don't they deserve to be made regular employees by now?
3. what is the proportion of casuals to regular employees now in city gov?
4. doesn't city gov think it's about time they re-think the way they employ people, and dispense with the concept that casual employees are those whom the current chief executive owes favors to, but are not really qualified for a regular position?

Anyways, I presumed your family and some relatives are living here in Iligan. Why don't you take this as an opportunity to be with them instead. With them, you may explore Tinago, have a cool dip at Timoga, play with the waves at the beach or walk leisurely at the downtown area. Am sure, sooner or later, you'll meet some old friends or make new friends. And since it's fiesta time, the chance of meeting them is bigger. Just enjoy!

Diyandi Festival sa Iligan

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/diyandi1.jpg

Folk-lore depicts Iligan’s patron saint,
St. Michael the Archangel as the protector of
peace. During the 70s, at the height of the
secessionist hostilities in Mindanao, people
believed that Iligan remained untouched
and safe from rebel attacks because of the
miracles of St. Michael.
One evening, when a hostile group
was poised to
attack Iligan
City, the rebels
r e t r e a t e d
because they
could not find
the city as it
was transformed into
a lake. Another story
told is that the Patron
Saint makes his
rounds in the evening
as evidenced by amorseko grass on his clothes and
muddy boots.
These are just a few of the many stories about
St. Michael. Even the story of his installation as
patron saint of Iligan continues to inspire and
endear him to each and every Iliganon.
Thus, his feast every 29th of September, is a grand
celebration in Iligan. In fact, it has transformed into a month-long
festival, the DIYANDI FESTIVAL SA ILIGAN.

http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/SSC/diyandi2.jpg

Diyandi is a ritual performed by an all-female group outside the Cathedral during
the Pagkanaug, before every novena and before the start of the Komedya, or Comedia
de San Miguel, a folk stage play depicting the celestial battle. The ritual depicts the
courtship between a Maranao male and Higaonon female, and culminating into an offering
symbolic of their union and bountiful harvest to St. Michael the Archangel. The ritual
aptly describes the peaceful co-existence of Iligan’s tri-people – Maranaos, Higaonons and
Christians.

Speaking of Diyandi as a festival name, the Diyandi Dance according to Prof. Christian Aguado who is a cultural anthropologist of MSU-IIT, does not necessarily mean an inter-marriage of the Higaunon and Maranao as there is no marriage happening portrayed in dance rituals of the Iliganons. It does not also serve the thought of courtship dance.

My grandmother was born in the 1920s. She danced Diyandi since she was 7 and she could attest to Prof. Christian Aguado's statement. She told that the celebration that they did since she was young was that the Higaunons would come down the mountains to pay tribute to San Miguel as well as the Maranaos. My lola's ancestors who constitute the coastal Christians, would do so to pay tribute to the image during fiesta. Each tribe, before San Miguel is put down from the altar during the 'pagpakanaug', the Higaunons would present their halad as well the Maranaos and in turn the Christians too. In such a scene, the tri-people are in front of the image, dancing after presenting their halad (offering) to the image which apparently signifies the start of the celebration of the feast of San Miguel. It is a celebration that attests to the miraculous powers of the image as presented in the "folklores" regarding Sr. San Miguel. It is a devotion that started in their belief of the patron saint rather than because of an "inter-cultural marriage". I hope somebody from the tourism would conduct a study again because the Diyandi Festival is fast becoming known as a festival unique to Iligan. While it is being opened to the media, its history and cultural relevance should be fully established as it may create a rather wrong definition as to why it is called the Diyandi.

Citing the presence of a Higaunon, a Maranao and a Christian in the dance; their portrayal in the dance are all of offering and adoration of the patron saint. Presenting their 'halad' (offering) The manuscripts of their adoration and chants signify that it is a dance offering rather than intermarriage or dance courtship. The chants alone do not state anything like courtship or marriage in the dance.

Be it known that Iligan City as a Chritian municipality during my lola's time had no trouble on its tri-people. Even the Maranaos who were "unique" to Iligan and nearby Lanao, believed in the folklore of Sr. San Miguel.

Lumad Iliganons have Maranao blood in their veins which consist of the families of Zalsos (the head of all families in Iligan) down to the branches of families of the Obach, Adeva, Ramiro, Jariol, Badelles, Sabaduquia, Echavez, Yañez, Lluisma, Nadorra, and other countless family branches of the Zalsos family. Even the Dimaporos have a connection to Iligan because of the Maranao ascendance of the Iliganons. Why are they of Maranao decent? It is because the Zalsos family whose ancestor came from Indonesia in the 1400s married a local during that time. Consequently, from Zal-zal, the family had descendants that have 7 siblings. 4 of it remained Muslim who fled to the Lanao areas during the Spanish time with the remaining stayed in Iligan and was Christianized. It was from the name Zal-zal that the family name Zalsos is from.

During my research in our Philippine Languages course at IIT in 1999, I learned that Diyandi was the real name of Iligan City's fiesta celebration rather than KASADYA. That is why when I did a research with my lola as one of the racounteurs, I told that our celebration should be renamed Diyandi rather than KASADYA. And years later, what I had asked was answered by Sr. San Miguel: the celebration was named DIYANDI--back to its original name!

Adding to my belief in Sr. San Miguel, when we asked to him for a safe delivery of our first child, we asked Sr. San Miguel that our child be born on the last week of September rather than first week of October as our doctor told that it would either be last week of Sept or first week of October. The answer of Sr. San Miguel to our prayer? HE MADE THE 29TH OF SEPTEMBER AS THE DAY OF BIRTH OF OUR DAUGHTER AT 12 NOON! Isn't that miraculous?

19th is the original date of the Pagpakanaug accordingly to my lola. That's why when they danced on the 20th, they always pray on the 19th because it was the original date of the pagpakanaug celebration.

by Marigold Cherie Ramos-Garrido

Cagayan de Oro City (15 September) -- Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) region X‘s nominee for the Search for TESDA Idol 2009 is declared as the national winner for the wage-employed category.

This is the 5th time that Region X won the institutional award since 2002.

Director Edwin C. Gatinao, amidst the regional celebration on August 25, called from TESDA Central Office and announced the winning moments of Dr. Gonzales and TESDA Region X.

Dr. Remegio B. Gonzales of MSU-IIT, nominated by the TESDA provincial office of Lanao del Norte, received a trophy from the Deputy Director General Milagros Dawa-Hernandez, on behalf of Secretary Augusto Boboy Syjuco, TESDA Director General, and was honored during the national awarding ceremonies held at the TESDA Central Office in Taguig, Metro Manila.

The "TESDA Idol Award" is one of the institutional awards given by TESDA annually.

The award recognizes tech-voc graduates who reached skills excellence and are highly successful in their respective occupations.

The recipients of this award are persons who have contributed to the economic growth in their communities and who possess qualities as role models worthy for emulation by the youth and unemployed persons for a promising career in tech-voc occupation.

The winner is also conferred the President Ramon Magsaysay Outstanding Filipino Workers Award (PRMOFWA).

It is the government's concrete recognition of the important role of Filipino workers who are honest, hardworking, persevering, highly successful in their respective fields, toward achieving the country's economic goals in support of national development.

Dr. Gonzales finished a 2-year Technical Trade at Bohol School of Arts and Trades in 1969 while he worked as electrician in one of the universities in Bohol.

He pursued his BS Electrical Engineering.

He is now a Doctor in Educational Management working as Full Professor VI, Resident Electrical and Safety Engineer in MSU-IIT, Iligan City.

He is accorded with several awards in his field as Outstanding Electrical Engineer and moved up to the ladder.

He is indeed one of the few who exhibits the qualities of an outstanding Pinoy Worker of the World (Pinoy WOW).

As the national winner, Dr. Gonzales received two trophies, three scholarship vouchers, 25,000 pesos in cash and a trip to Thailand. (TESDA-10)

Ive heard Msgr. Jemar VeraCruz being interviewed in the radio and he said that they re-sked the "Pagpakanaug" to the 19th instead of 20 because the 20th falls on a Sunday. Sunday is devoted solely for Mass from morning to evening and a Mass is the highest form of showing our devotion and love for the Lord. That's why the "pagkapanaug" which is only a tradition is re-sked to September 19, a Saturday.

Diyandi festival boosts Iligan City as tourism hub
by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (18 September) -- Showcasing the many wonderful attractions that Iligan city has to offer comes in September as the city celebrates its month-long fiesta activity.

The San Miguel Fiesta, in honor of the city's patron, Saint Michael the Archangel, every 29th September is undoubtedly the most colorful yearly event in Iligan city.

The celebration is highlighted by three traditional events.

"On September 19, the Pagpakanaug or the lowering of the Patron Saint from its pedestal on the side of the main altar to another pedestal for its yearly change of costumes is a sight to behold and a tradition unparalled," said Erlito C. Dalangin, chairman, Diyandi Festival sa Iligan 2009.

"Although conducted inside the Cathedral, the Pagpakanaug is spearheaded by devotees and participated in by local government officials whereby the city mayor receives the Patron Saint's helmet; the congressman receives the spear; and the chief of police the San Miguel's shield," explained Dalangin.

All this occurs with a ritual and a specific count amidst thunderous chants of Viva Senor San Miguel, participated in by thousands of devotees paying tribute to the defender of their faith, added Dalangin.

Then there will be staging of the generations-old sarzuela, the San Miguel stage play more popularly known as "Comedia."

This is a crude and morality play in Cebuano and its theme is the triumph of San Miguel over Lucifer (good over evil).

This will be performed on the 28th of September and 4th of October at the Rizal Park, this city.

The procession and street celebration on September 29, the feast day, is attended by throngs of devotees in all assortments of costumes and masks.

Higaonons, angels, Diyandis, devil and angels dance, prance, and shout in mock battle celebrating the confrontation of Senor San Miguel and Luzbel (Lucifer).

During the procession, the devotees shout fiercely and forcefully.

Other cultural groups of Iligan, the Maranaos and Higaonons, participate in the feast with the Christian community.

This is evident in the Diyandi, a dance ritual performed by an all-female group showing the courtship between a Maranao male and Higaonon female and culminates in an offering, symbolic of their union and harvest to St. Michael.

The beautiful imagery that the ritual conjures, which aptly describes the peaceful co-existence of the Muslims, Higaonons and Christians of Iligan, gave birth to, the Diyandi Festival sa Iligan.

The Hudyaka Cultural and Dance Sports competition will be staged at the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) on September 22, with the Department of Education (DepEd) as the proponent.

In the morning of September 27 will be the Kasadya Street Dancing.

And there will be parade of beauties in the evening, with 12 lovely ladies vying for the crown of Miss Iligan 2009, to be held at MSU-IIT gymnasium.

Diyandi festival boosts Iligan City as tourism hub (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p090918.htm&no=64)

by Lorry V.

Likewise, 14 candidates (seven boys and seven girls) aged 5 to 12 years old will compete in the Search for the Little Ms / Little Mr Iligan 2009 which will be held early afternoon on the same day, at the Rizal Park.

This is sponsored by the Soroptimist International of Iligan City.

Diyandi Festival chair Dalangin said they also invited sports enthusiasts on football, golf, frisbees, and swimming to join the challenge which will start on 19th of September, with the joint airsoft, rescue, Red Cross and fire-fighting competition.

"This year's fiesta celebration bears the theme, "Tuyhakaw, Iligan..Cge, Go!," Dalangin said. (PIA Iligan)

Hello Iligan... Happy Fiesta sa Inyo Tanan!!!

I know about the City Gov't. Live Street Cams!

I was wondering if anyone else is planning on doing a live cam of the Kasadya street dancing, or other festivities?

I'm only asking because i know that the gov't street cams are going to be unavailable during the events due to heavy traffic...

Anyone? If you are please, kindly post the address.

Nice pictures everyone... Please keep posting.

early this year, i talked to one of the security guards at the former bodega (owned by the UYs?) beside EGU hardware, its big about 3 ha of hand including other parcels used by other tenants/residents near Roosevelt.pero wala musukol ang SM kay muabot ug 400M daw baligya.kung mabaligya pod ng Galingan ug Bularanan ug kopras, labot pajud ang kasagbutan luyo sa E&R hospital ug BIR mukabat ni sa banbana lang mga 6-8ha..ug mao ni nga mga lote nga gusto paliton sa either SM, RLC ug LKK kaniadto..i hope these area will be developed as new business center connecting the Gmall.:banana::banana:

just an opinion: large malls don't have to be along the high way, if we don't want our highways to clog up easily. if you've noticed, LLK is situated in the center of a vast commercial center which is several meters away from the highway. :)

Tubod or Tambo would have been an a much more ideal location, imo.

A drop of history in every cup.

Silvestro's Confiserie first started with, a small kiosk at the ground floor level at the city's very first mall, serving the beautiful people of Iligan City sweet treats like baked bars of various choices and very booming Orbitz pearl shakes.

Our sweets go hand in hand with coffee…. The thought lingered in my mind... that was when Silvestro’s Coffee was first thought “this is perfect with coffee.” And now, to serve you better, we are opening a coffee shop to all coffee lovers. To my patrons, thank you for encouraging me to finally give you all what you want, Authentic Arabica Coffee blends that Silvestro’s Bistro and Confiserie is proud of.

The most important ingredient in a cup of coffee.

Hand-making a cup of coffee is an art. It takes time and skill to perfect. That's why every single barista, is professionally trained in the art of coffee by our experts. It's a little thing, but it makes a big difference, because it means you'll get a perfect cup of Silvestro’s coffee every time.

The perfect combination

When you walk into Silvestro’s Bistro and Confiserie, you'll notice it's different to other coffee shops. First of all, there's the warm and welcoming atmosphere. Then the great range of authentic coffee drinks. And finally, the most passionate and well trained baristas around. It's this unique combination that makes us stand out from the others, and we're incredibly proud of it.

But, we won't stop with a plain coffee shop.... Born out of the simple notion that a restaurant and entertainment can go hand in hand, Silvestro's Bistro and Confiserie is going to perfect a reputation of excellence with delicious cuisine to serve its faithful duty as Iligan’s beacon of nightlife. Silvestro’ s is the number one stop for all those wishing to experience the charm, style, flair and grace the city has to offer in it's most vibrant and cosmopolitan party district.

The Bistro (Resto Bar)

No restaurant is complete without a quality wine and beverage selection. Silvestro’s will maintain its supremacy in wine selection throughout its growth. Age perfected original and humble selection of some wines will evolve in a modern concoctions of cocktails in Iligan City. Nightly, we give you different varieties of music from R and B’s, techno to acouctic nights and best of 80’s to suit your mood and harmony with the addition to our palatable food menus everyday.

So, slowly but surely, masulbad na ning atong problema sa tubig.

I don't know which part of Iligan @capri resides. I cannot imagine an HUC like Iligan without street lights. Maybe not all streets in Iligan are well lighted during night time but saying "walay suga ang mga dalan" is more than an exaggeration. And also, there is water in Iligan. Only there's a shortage due to the growing water needs of the city. The mega water project of the current admin hopefully will serve the requirement. About the mall, well it's a matter of taste and functionality. If Gaisano functions like a mall and serves the majority of Iliganons well, then it's in good taste. :)

Hapsay na man tan-awon tong dalana.

dili man sa ingon dili tinuod or not, pero any business correspondence of corporate plans which are under negotiation pa is deemed confidential og ang nag-gunit ani nga correspondence has no right to publicly display names either on the internet or any other media. Unless, kung gitagaan gyud sila og right to publicly open the correspondence or the said negotiation, pwde ipakita ang name.

Kay kung ipakita ang name, ang security sa mga naka sign sa document mahimong mabutang sa usa ka unlikely situation. Security lang man ang hinungdan.

Kung tinuod man gani ni nga letter or not, it is solely on our own sake kung motoo ta or not. Pero for now, let's welcome such development coz the letter in itself, for me lang ha, is somewhat true. Pero I reiterate, let's wait for the corporate release of SM.

^^ masaya ako't green pa rin ang paligid ng ating city. I'm wishing more of tree lined streets at saka 'green' innovations.

Sana yung mga street lights natin sa Iligan palitan na lang ng mga SOLAR powered lights nang makatipid tayo sa bills at nang maging simula ito ng 'green living' status ng city. More trees at saka less carbon footprints per capita sana ang magiging target natin.

I agree with you RML... SM is really not type of a company na mag hire og secretary nga dili kamao sa format sa letter. Look at the line nga nag short.. and mostly business letter, ang mga company nga mag sulat gani to their clients is full block type of letter. But then I really hope na mag karoon ng SM jan... lets wait and see.... :)

For me, in business correspondence, there should be specific details that needs to be included. IMO you cannot just say we need help regarding a lot near Philam and then without any query on the name of the owner of the lot etc. There are also other necessary structures in correspondence that pertains to the topic being asked in the letter such, "this .... pertains to the parcel of lot/land situated at...." etc.

The type of this correspondence is somewhat like that of a MEMO being sent to a sub office or division of a company.

Daghan lang kulang but looks authentic though. That's why we need to wait for the corporate release on this matter. But, on the contrary, I am still wishing for the authenticity of this letter pud.

Possible pud nga moari ang SM kay they are on to the next wave cities naman pud Gensan, Tarlac, ROsales, Naga etc... basin ang sunod ani mga cities like Tacloban, Iligan, Butuan, Dumaguete, Pagadian, Zamboanga etc...

Bisan Hypermart, Savemore or Supercenter okay na. Ang important is the shopping convenience og more choices. Kay kung usa lang ka major operator naa sa atung city, murag makontrol nila ang unsa nila gusto. They can get prices higher without any fear kay wala man kontra.

Wala koy napilian sa ilang duha. I'm choosing between Manny Villar and Gilberto Teodoro.
