Buruun folks bag Northern Mindanao's model Filipino family award
by Charmaine P. Tadlas

Cagayan de Oro City (25 September) -- A family from Buruun, Iligan City was recognized yesterday, September 24, as the Regional Model Filipino Family for Northern Mindanao level.

Mr. Glenn and D'Vincet Quihoy and sons GJ' Joash, Clint John, Chris Angelico and Jacks Zechariah topped the rates in the search for "Huwarang Pamilyang Pilipino" which was facilitated and judged by the Regional Inter-Agency Committee on the Filipino Family.

The Quihoy family stood out in the criteria in which the husband and wife demonstrate love and respect for each other, the parents demonstrate love and respect for their children and the children demonstrate love and respect for one another.

The family also scored high in their involvement in community affairs.

"We are not a perfect family but still we thank everybody for their recognition towards us," D'Vincet Quihoy, said.

"What probably made us become the model family is our devotion towards each other and towards God."

Glenn, Barangay Captain of Buruun and D'Vincet, the dean of College of Arts and Sciences in Iligan City Medical Center, shared that their family went through a lot just like other families but said that they always believed that the end of it all was God.

"My husband and I always make sure that we set ourselves as an example to our children. So we always pray and put God in the center of our marriage and family."

As the Huwarang Pamilyang Pilipino, the Quihoy family will be reaching out to the communities in Northern Mindanao by endorsing barangay action plans on family interventions and activities and serve as advocates on family values.

The second and first runners up were Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Narabe, Jr. of Gingoog City and Mr. and Mrs. Zoilo Erigbuagas of Kapatagan, Lanao del Norte.

The Regional Inter-Agency Committee on the Filipino Family was represented from the Departments of Social Welfare and Development, Agriculture, Interior and Local Governance, Environment and Natural Resources, and Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office of Misamis Oriental.

The search was also conducted by the Department of Social welfare and Development (DSWD), region 10, in celebration to the National Filipino Family Week of which the theme is "Si Nanay: Matatag sa Lahat ng Bagay." (DSWD-10)

The parade started around 7 in the morning. The weather was good and the sun shone brightly which prompted the Bureau of Fire Protection to spray the road with water to make it cooler. But towards the end of the parade, there's a downpour which lasted for about an hour. But it did not stop the street dancing and merrymaking. It became an elaborate feast in the rain. VIVA Senyor San Miguel!!!

Liberal Party postpones Iligan oath-taking

By Richel Umel
Inquirer Mindanao

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – The Liberal Party postponed the mass oath-taking of new members from this city and Lanao del Norte, as Senators Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III and Mar Roxas had to leave for Manila to help in ongoing disaster and relief efforts in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon.

“Our focus now is to help the typhoon victims,” Roxas told the Inquirer in an interview early Sunday morning. Roxas left for Manila Sunday noon.

Roxas added that Aquino, the party’s presidential candidate, on Sunday morning took the first flight out of Cagayan de Oro City to be in Manila.

Representative Vicente Belmonte Jr. (1st district, Lanao del Norte) said the oath-taking could wait. Iligan City will celebrate the feast of its patron, St. Michael on September 29.

Rains and floods reported in Central Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula

DAVAO CITY — Ondoy’s impact in Mindanao over the weekend was comparatively mild, bringing cloudy skies and intermittent rains resulting in disruptions in cultural activities in Iligan, floods in Maguindanao and Zamboanga City, as well as delays or suspension of airline flights from southern Mindanao to Manila. The weather in most parts of the island, including this city, however, was generally fine.

In Gen. Santos, the last afternoon flight to Manila was cancelled on Saturday, airport authorities said on Sunday. Nathaniel Y. Nazareno, Civil Aviation Authority local officer, said the flight of Cebu Pacific Air didn’t take off due to weather concerns.

Local radio reports noted that rain in some parts of Central Mindanao resulted in the inundation of low-lying areas, especially in Maguindanao.

Heavy rains poured in Bukidnon on Sunday but no flashfloods or landslides have been reported.

Iligan’s Diyandi dance festival was interrupted on Sunday morning after an hour-long downpour. The dance festival is in preparation for the city’s fiesta on the 29th. "It’s okay even if it’s raining. We think it’s a blessing," said Rana N. Englis, a civic leader.

In Zamboanga City, several villages were submerged as it continued to rain heavily on Sunday. More than 100 families have evacuated due to floods, said City Social Welfare Officer Francisco L. Barredo. He said in some areas, water was already at chest level.

Mayor Celso L. Lobregat has urged the people living in coastal areas to evacuate due to the strong waves. Government officials expect the storm to cause millions of pesos in damages, particularly in farmland areas.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said the city government would find ways to help flood victims in Metro Manila and other parts of Luzon. He added that his administration’s priority in the coming months would be to strengthen the city’s disaster preparedness program and said they would buy rubber boats for the city’s 911 emergency center.

I'm happy :) for Iligan is back on its feet when it comes to celebrating the Diyandi Festival sa Iligan.

Iligan close to becoming congressional district

By Richel Umel
Inquirer Mindanao

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines – This city is now closer to becoming a congressional district after a Senate committee voted for House Bill No. 4054 on third and final reading, a legislator said Tuesday.

Currently, Iligan is part of a congressional district that also embraces Lanao del Norte province.

Lanao del Norte and Iligan Representative Vicente Belmonte Jr. told the Inquirer on Tuesday that the Senate local government committee, chaired by Sen. Benigno Aquino III, approved the bill “after a thorough deliberation” on Monday.

He said Aquino’s committee agreed that it was high time the city was constituted into a separate district as its population has reached 320,000. Under the law, an area is eligible for classification as a legislative district if it has a population of at least 250,000, Belmonte said.

A congressional district is entitled to have one representative in the House of Representatives.

“This very good news, which came at a time the city is celebrating [the feast of] its patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel,” he said.

Belmonte said the support of Senators Francis Escudero and Miguel Zubiri was instrumental in the approval of the bill.

“Once the Senate Secretary General signs HB 4054, it will be forwarded to Malacañang within 30 days for the President's signature,” he said.

Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz said he and other officials were confident that President Macapagal-Arroyo will sign the bill into law before the filing of certificates of candidacy for the 2010 elections.

Garapal (shameless) na man gud kaayo ning BIR mangayu sa mga negosyante...their kutong ranges from P200,000 to P800,000 depending on the size of the business establishment. That's what happened in Cagayan de Oro too but the business people in CDO didn't give in, they fought back with a one day strike...all business establishments were closed for one whole day. Outcome? The RDO (Revenue District Officer) in CDO was ousted from office. That's what the business community here in Iligan should do too.

There's a saying by Edmund Burke that goes: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

I guess there are some issues cguro why they are temporarily closed. Basin walay silay bayad bayad. Dili man cguro na ingon nga mangutong kay huna hunaa baya daku na sila nga organization ug daghan silay tao dili sad basta basta mag conduct og ing ana nga sitwasyon. I agree with @patchoi07.

:bash: pag ka way nahut diay :bash:

Ug dili man sab tanang taxpayers, gikotungan. :ohno:

Garapal (shameless) na man gud kaayo ning BIR mangayu sa mga negosyante...their kutong ranges from P200,000 to P800,000 depending on the size of the business establishment. That's what happened in Cagayan de Oro too but the business people in CDO didn't give in, they fought back with a one day strike...all business establishments were closed for one whole day. Outcome? The RDO (Regional District Officer) in CDO was ousted from office. That's what the business community here in Iligan should do too.

There's a saying by Edmund Burke that goes: "All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."

Kami gani sa amo papeles for Deed of Donation wala pa ghapon nigawas after two years.

:bash:

International finance competition: Pinoys can make it!

Banking & Finance
Written by Free Enterprise / Jean d’Orival
Thursday, 01 October 2009 23:38

THE Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (Finex), through its Junior Finex Committee, of which I am the overall chairman, is holding every year its famous Intercollegiate Finance Competition (ICFC), now on its 11th year.

The competition aims to enhance the quality of finance education in the country and, at the same time, expose the participants to world-class finance education standards.

Moreover, the ICFC aims to provide a forum for identifying and developing the country’s future business professionals and leaders, as well as promote networking and friendship, exchange of ideas and cooperation among the participants. It is a multiple-choice questions format based on CFALevel 1.

This year the eliminations round were held in five provincial centers (NCR, South and Central Luzon—University of Makati, Baguio; Northern Luzon—University of the Cordilleras; Central and Eastern Visayas—University of The Visayas in Cebu; Western Visayas—University of St. La Salle Bacolod; and Mindanao—Xavier University in Cagayan de Oro) on September 18, and the finals will be on October 19, at the auditorium of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas, with the presence of Governor Amando Tetangco Jr.

Eighty-five colleges and universities from all over the country registered for the eliminations round, 20 of which advanced to the finals. As usual, the passion of the supporters and the suspense as the eliminations neared the end were intense! Everybody wanted to know who the top schools would be, and we had to go to sudden death among four universities to award the last two slots. The Top 20 (by ranking) are University of the Philippines-Diliman, Ateneo de Manila University, University of the Philippines-Iloilo, De La Salle University-Manila, Far Eastern University, University of Santo Tomas, University of the East-Manila, Angeles University Foundation, University of St. La Salle, New Era University, Technological Institute of the Philippines-Manila, Manuel S. Enverga University Foundation, College of the Immaculate Conception, University of Cebu-Lapu-Lapu/Mandaue, Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology, San Sebastian College Recoletos-Manila, Kingfisher School of Business and Finance, Notre Dame University, Technological Institute of the Philippines-Quezon City and De La Salle University-Dasmariñas.

The excitement goes one step further as we are moving closer to the finals on October 19.

For the third year in a row, four prestigious Asian universities are joining the best local schools for the finals, namely, University of Hong Kong, National University of Singapore, Chulalongkorn University and Assumption University from Thailand.

Stop having complexes: We are good!

The past two years, the three winning teams were from the Philippines.

Last year UP Diliman emerged as the champion, followed by Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle Manila, Assumption University of Thailand, National University of Singapore and UP Iloilo; thereby showing that our schools can definitely compete with the top foreign schools.

Now the competition is getting tougher every year as the foreign teams arrive better prepared, and we have this year, for the first time, the Best Asian University, i.e., University of Hong Kong.

But we can do it again! And we will do it again!

By the way, the competition is open to the public (9 a.m. to 5 p.m.), and it’s worth living the extreme suspense and unbearable wait as we move into the last questions with a few schools separated by only a few points.

I would like to end this note with a special thanks to our sponsors, without them it would never have been possible. The two diamond sponsors are Citi (through the Citi Foundation) and Vista Land, with Educalc.net (master distributor of the HP calculators in SEA) as a major sponsor, and other sponsors, namely, The Pan Pacific Manila, Jollibee, Eurotel/Sogo, Pagcor and Malayan Insurance, and the technical support of the Asian Institute of Management, CFA Philippines, PWC-Isla Lipana and the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.

See you all on the 19th! I can’t wait....

Free Enterprise is a rotating column of members of the Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (Finex), appearing every Wednesday and Friday.

I agree with @patchoi07.

Snake knocks out power in Iligan
By Lino De La Cruz (The Philippine Star)
Updated October 06, 2009 12:00 AM

ILIGAN CITY , Philippines - A snake that accidentally crawled inside the switchyard of the company that supplies electricity caused a three-hour brownout in some parts of this city Saturday night.

The snake’s “adventure” caused the tripping off of the 69KVA transmission line, according to a spokesman for the National Transmission Corp. (Transco).

Beth Ladaga, Transco communications officer, said the snake was trying to get to the bird’s nest located on top of one of the insulators inside the company’s switchyard in barangay Maria Cristina, when it got stuck.

The incident caused a short circuit that triggered the tripping off of the 69KVA in barangay Kiwalan and the ensuing brownout in some parts of this city.

Power was restored at 11 p.m. after a company engineer traced the cause and removed the snake.

The incident happened while Metro Manila was still reeling from storm “Ondoy” and bracing for incoming typhoon “Pepeng.”

In 2000, a similar incident happened at the same switchyard, sending residents into a panic after rebel groups threatened to topple transmission lines when former President Joseph Estrada declared an all-out war against them.

Consumer Welfare Month celebration focuses on health, says DTI Iligan chief

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (5 October) -- With the theme, "Generic Drugs: Gawang Pinoy! Galing Pinoy! Tangkilikin Natin," the country once again celebrates Consumer Welfare Month this October.

Provincial Director Ruel B. Paclipan of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Iligan City / Lanao del Norte said that the theme is anchored on the key policy area of the national government to protect public health and to adopt appropriate measures to promote and ensure access to affordable quality drugs and medicines for all.

This year, the National Consumers Affairs Council has passed the torch of chairmanship to the Department of Health (DOH), citing the department's role as crucial in the implementation and enforcement of the Consumer Act.

"Several health-related laws and issues plaguing the country has a great impact on consumers," said the DTI chief.

Meanwhile, Iligan's celebration on the Consumer Welfare Month will kick-off on October 5, during the Monday flag raising ceremony of the city government employees at the Anahaw amphitheatre, City Hall, with a brief message by City Health Officer Livey H. Villarin on generic drugs.

Highlighting the celebration will be the Generic Drugs Forum on October 7, spearheaded by the City Health Office, in coordination with the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD), region 10.

The venue will be at the 3rd Floor, Market Office, Aguinaldo Street, this city.

Meanwhile, the forum will answer related consumer and health issues on Generic Drugs, Cheaper Medicine Act, Expanded Senior Citizen Act, and other related health updates, as well as the Consumer Act of the Philippines.

Other activities lined-up for this month include the Consumer Quiz Bee; information dissemination on various Fair Trade Laws; briefings and seminars to various sectoral groups; market visits; enforcement activities; and radio guesting interviews.

"All these activities are coordinated by our Department, in tandem with the Local Price Coordinating Council of Iligan City (LPCC), as part of the government's commitment to protect the welfare and safety of consumers through continued consumer education program," concluded Paclipan.

(mta)

so they're actually illegal...then it's not a good transport mode for an industrial city stature of Iligan...we're supposed to use the most convenient and safety mode of transportation which is cars/taxi cab and not these primitive and unsafe way of transport.i think this habal-habals are fly-by-night stuff?so it means almost zero passenger for taxis...i also observed when i came home via cebu, there's no more direct ferry service to Iligan, ships will go to ozamis first then Iligan arriving 10am.gone we're the days when Iligan enjoys direct service to Cebu and to the capital Manila.but at least people from Iligan now have 2 choices for airline service either CDO or Ozamis..:)

One thing those habal habals are illegal is the unsafeness of the mode. Even with crash helmets, riding one is still fatal.

I know very well that there are people working at City Hall who are lurkers in this thread. I hope one of them will consider our sentiments regarding the operation of habal-habal in the city proper and call the attention of the authorities.

Regading the sea and air transport of Iligan, it's really sad to think that we have the necessary ports (airport and seaport) but they're not fully utilized. Our Balo-i airport will never be of service commercially once LA is operational. Our seaport is one of the better ports in Mindanao but the deteriorating number of commercially available vessels over the years is a mystery. :ohno:

Miriac corn processing plant, trading center to rise

by Breezy C. Jimenez

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (7 October) -- A corn processing plant and trading center will soon rise inside the 416-hectare Metro-Iligan Regional Agro-Industrial Center (MIRAIC) located in the municipality of Linamon.

Once this materializes, this is the first one of its kind which could help local farmers raise their productivity, allow them to maintain quality produce so it can command better prices while putting into the minimum its production cost incurred.

This facility will hold a modern corn post-harvest processing center, conveyor, receiving and sorting section, dryer bin, corn-sheller and dryer and bagging bin.

Included in the proposal is to make the facility upgraded and converted in due time into a dry-mill production facility which will produce ethanol and other by-products and eventually having a bio-ethanol plant.

Bio-ethanol is found to be a viable source for feed stock.

With the implementation of this project, socio-economic progress is expected to be felt in the entire province.

Aside from that, this will create job opportunities from production to marketing and with its multiplier effects, peace and order stability will be achieved. (PIO Lanao del Norte)

Regardless of the number of passengers, motorcycles are unsafe for public transport given it's vulnerability to any type of collision because the body of persons riding it are all exposed to first impact. I remember one news in Normin where the crash helmet of a person riding a motorcycle was literally crushed like watermelon. So, even with helmets, it's still dangerous not to mention the lack of insurance 2nd to 3rd party liabilities of this kind of transport.

by Lorry V. Gabule

PNRC Governor Henry C. Dy, chairman of the Board of Directors, PNRC, Iligan City Chapter, said they opted to accept cash donations for the local chapter to send it at areas affected.

But for those who shall have their assistance / donations in any kind, we shall accept it with accord and with receipts for all donations entrusted to us, said Governor Dy.

We are holding the 'Operation Tabang' at the public plaza, the city's core and accessible place for donors and benevolent individuals to go and deliver their assistance.

This is the third day of our appeal for asking donations to help alleviate the conditions of the victims of typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng, which caused loss of lives and livelihood, severe damage to properties and mass displacements, expressed Governor Dy. (PIA Lanao del Norte)

Just want to share with you guys this article from GMAnews.tv:

A CNN hero started with a pushcart full of hopes
SOPHIA DEDACE, GMANews.TV
10/07/2009 | 08:44 PM

More With an ocean of garbage as his playground as a child, Efren Peñaflorida Jr. was accustomed to living amid the ills of society. The slum area in Cavite province where he grew up abounded with solvent-sniffing kids and tough gangsters. People sifted through dumpsites during the day and slept in the cemetery’s empty crypts at night.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3470/3989194341_857025f6ac.jpg

It was 1997. Peñaflorida, a gangling 16-year-old youngster back then, was occasionally bullied and beaten by street toughies. No one would have thought that, 12 years later, he would be short-listed by globally known Cable News Network (CNN) as a candidate for its CNN Heroes.

“I grew up really poor. My father was a driver and my mother was a laundrywoman. When I went to school, I experienced being mocked, bullied, discriminated against," said Peñaflorida, the second of three children.

“I wanted to settle scores with the bullies. But I realized I could turn a bad experience into something positive."

At the time, Peñaflorida was part of Club 8586, a youth group in Cavite. His mentor encouraged him to help curb the rampant gang wars and fraternity feuds in their communities, where kids as young as nine years were already involved in violent fights.

‘Pushcart classroom’

Despite having to cope with his own limited means, Peñaflorida formed the Dynamic Teen Company (DTC) with his two peers. The fledgling group ventured into work among destitute and out-of-school youth, teaching them basic literacy skills, values formation, and even personal hygiene.

Armed only with plastic bags loaded with books and school supplies, Peñaflorida and his team roamed the shantytowns of Cavite, offering kids a unique chance to learn useful things in the “street classroom" setting.

Years later, the platform for their mobile classroom would evolve into pedicabs, and eventually into what it is today – a Kariton Klassrum (literally, “pushcart classroom"). The Kariton Klassrum now carries a mini-library, reading aids, blackboards, and even detachable tables and chairs.

Peñaflorida says that his commitment to teach basic literacy to kids is his way of “paying forward" – having been a scholar himself. His elementary and high school education was funded by World Vision Philippines, while his college education was shouldered by Club 8586. Not surprisingly, he took up a degree in Education.

Now 28, Peñaflorida earns a living as a public school teacher in Cavite. On Saturdays, he continues his pushcart classrooms –which have expanded into Manila – with other teen volunteers now reaching 2,000.

Aside from teaching literacy, the group also conducts feeding programs for abandoned street kids who scavenge for food by sifting through heaps of garbage.

Who is a hero?

When the world-renowned Cable News Network (CNN) early this year called for submissions for its annual search for Heroes, Club 8586 nominated Peñaflorida.

The network’s Blue Ribbon Panel sifted through 9,000 nominees from over 100 countries, and soon narrowed down its choices to 28. On October 1 (October 2 in Manila), CNN announced its top 10 finalists for its Hero of the Year. Peñaflorida made the cut.

The word “hero" has been used so loosely, that these days even someone who performs a singular, momentary selfless act like jumping into a river to save a child is quickly declared a hero. But the same public recognition is not so easily earned by a person who performs the same heroic act, quietly and doggedly from day to day.

Peñaflorida (in white) pushes for change. Hub Pacheco file photo
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2460/3989964630_1e9eefa60f.jpg

Nonetheless, Rezcel Fajardo has no doubt in her mind that Peñaflorida is indeed a hero. One of the co-founders of DTC, Fajardo says she knew from the start that her colleague would be included in the CNN shortlist.

“He is a modern-day hero. He would use his meager salary to buy food for the kids. In fact, he had already pledged the prize money to the children he is helping, should he win," Fajardo said.

But like a real hero who embodies humility, Peñaflorida refuses to take the credit for the honor given by CNN, much less brag about it. He says that his inclusion in the roster of 10 finalists is already an honor in itself.

“This is not about me," he says. “If the people vote for me, they are actually voting for the poor kids DTC is teaching and the dedicated volunteers behind this work."

‘Rainbow after the rain’

Peñaflorida views his inclusion in CNN’s Top 10 as the proverbial “rainbow after the rain" to Filipinos.

On October 2, the country was still reeling from the weeklong floods wrought by storm “Ondoy" when it braced itself anew to face typhoon “Pepeng’s" wrath.

Like many other citizens who volunteered for Ondoy-related relief operations, Peñaflorida joined others in packing and distributing donations to flood-stricken communities in Cavite. True to his mission, his pushcarts turned into relief carts used to collect donated goods.

One of the mobile classrooms turns into a "relief cart" for Ondoy victims. DTC file photo
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2523/3989194127_b6babdafec.jpg

Peñaflorida says that Anderson Cooper’s announcement of the Blue Ribbon Panel’s decision “gave Filipinos a breath of fresh air, a brief moment to cheer and celebrate, to be inspired all the more" to pursue volunteer work and rebuild our nation.

The many heroes emerging from the Ondoy tragedy inspires Peñaflorida to devote more of himself to the disaster victims in his home province.

“There are many people who rose to the occasion, but their stories remain untold. It’s an honor to represent a nation of heroes," Peñaflorida says. “Indeed, the Filipino is worth dying for," he adds, quoting the famous words of his personal hero, Ninoy Aquino.

With Filipinos abuzz with Peñaflorida’s nomination, the young man recently visited the World Vision office one busy afternoon and was promptly hounded by media. He now confesses he is still unaccustomed to being thrust into the spotlight.

Peñaflorida recalls that he and other DTC volunteers had to endure taunts and rejection for many years, while carrying out their mission. “We’ve experienced being degraded and unwanted, so we just had to bow our heads low while they shouted, ‘Here are the basureros (trash collectors)!’"

Despite the difficulties of bringing education closer to impoverished youth, Peñaflorida finds fulfillment not in awards and other forms of official recognition – not even in the flattery by politicians who have started courting him for their election plans – but in the smiles of the children who rush to meet him when they spot his humble pushcart.

Peñaflorida’s success is not your ordinary rags-to-riches story. While he is no longer hounded by the pangs of hunger and destitution, he continues to offer himself to the underprivileged as an example of a kid who fell victim to violence driven by poverty and yet found a way to lift himself up.

With heroes, the need to catalyze change always leads to endless possibilities. Even if the only possibility at first is to simply start pushing a pushcart. - GMANews.TV

Snake knocks out power in Iligan
By Lino De La Cruz (The Philippine Star) Updated October 06, 2009 12:00 AM

Dimaporo hands 19 multi-cabs to barangays

by Breezy C. Jimenez

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (8 October 2009) -- Under the Quibranza-Dimaporo initiative and Kabaranggayan Sigurado Program of Governor Mohamad Khalid Quibranza Dimaporo, 19 multi-purpose cabs or vehicles have been handed over by the younger Dimaporo and former Governor Imelda "Angging" Quibranza-Dimaporo on October 1 at the Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) Media Lounge, this town.

The recipient barangays composed a part of the municipalities of Kolambugan, Bacolod and Kauswagan, all in the province.

In Kolambugan town, multi-cabs are handed over to the Barangay Captains of barangays Small Banisilon, Pantaon, Bubong, Lumbac, Pantar, Sucodan, Palao, San Roque and Matampay.

Meanwhile in Kauswagan town, barangays Cayontor, Baraason, Delabayan, Paiton and Tingin-tingin received the vehicles.

For Bacolod, five 95) multi-cabs have been given to barangays Pagayawan, Punod, Babalaya Townsite, Demarao and Delabayan West during said turn-over ceremony.

In his message, Governor Dimaporo reminded the Barangay Chairmen to use the vehicles in a manner that will benefit their respective barangays and not for their own convenience and welfare.

He added that should any term or condition as stated in the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) is breached, the errant Barangay Captain may be directed to return the vehicle to the provincial government and be subjected to proper administrative proceedings.

"Malaki ang maitutulong ng mga multi-cabs. Pwede itong gamitin as transportation during meetings, for local produce to reach the markets, for Civilian Volunterr Organization (CVOs) when conducting surveillance operations, and such other activities na makabenepisyo ang mga katawhan sa barangay," said Dimaporo.

He further declared that reasonable fees and charges for its use may be collected as long as there are corresponding resolutions and / or agreement by the council and residents that sanctions the same because it is one way of generating income which will be used for the maintenance of the multi-cab.

Provincial Community Affairs and Information Officer Lyndon G. Calica adhered that the granting of these vehicles has an accompanying responsibility and obligation.

Barangay Chairmen are accountable both to the residents of their corresponding communities and to the Provincial Government as well should they make use of these other than for it has been intended such as profiteering activities or using it exclusively for his own benefit.

In the same juncture, former Governor Imelda "Angging" Quibranza-Dimaporo told the Barangay Councils present that this project has been started by Congressman Abdullah Dimakuta Dimaporo's administration then hers and finally put into full implementation by their son's term of office.

She reminded them that the Dimaporo family have exerted so much effort for the welfare of the residents of Lanao del Norte, hence, these multi-cabs must justify the vision they have for herein province.

In addition, she promised that there are still projects and programs which are yet to be implemented in the province as long as the residents cooperate and do their part as well.

Signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) ensued after the short program thereafter the turn-over of registrations and keys to the recipients.

416-hectare corn processing plant, trading center to rise in Lanao Norte
By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
October 9, 2009, 4:39pm

BUTUAN CITY – A 416-hectare corn processing plant and trading center will soon rise in Northern Mindanao.

The structure will be constructed inside the Metro-Iligan Regional Agro-Industrial Center in Linamon town, Lanao del Norte.

The corn processing plant and trading center in Lanao del Norte is the first of its kind which could help local farmers raise their productivity, allow them to maintain quality produce so it can command better prices while placing into the minimum its production cost incurred.

The project will also add to the employment and income generation of the locality, the provincial information office in Lanao del Norte said.

When completed, the facility will have a modern corn post-harvest processing center, conveyor, receiving and sorting section, dryer bin, corn-sheller and dryer and bagging bin.

It was learned that the project will start before the end of the year or first quarter of 2010.

Included in the project is to make the facility upgraded and converted in due time into a dry-mill production facility which will produce ethanol and other by-products and eventually have a bio-ethanol plant.

Bio-ethanol is found to be a viable source for feed stock, the provinces’ information office also said.

“Socio-economic progress is expected to be felt in my entire province and nearby areas when this building will rise,” said Lanao del Gov. Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo.

Meanwhile, business analysts said the implementation of this big corn processing plant and trading center in that province will also create more job opportunities from production to marketing and with its multiplier effects, where peace and order stability will be achieved.

They said that this will also add more business opportunities in the region’s continuing economic prosperity.

Here's one concrete example...
If you're a first timer in Iligan City and you happened to pass by the CBD Roads, mashocked ka na lang ka harap muna mga sasakyan because "One Way pala yung road...atras ka na naman to find another road..."
Many times nako nabiktima nito dati sa ILIGAN!

wala bang "no entry" or "no left turn" signs sa mga one way city road natin kaya nalito si @Fahdingding?

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews / October 9) - Officials of the Department of Education here went on a sortie in the remote hinterland schools of Iligan city on October 7 and 8 to review the teaching strategies used, including the multigrade system, and to validate their situation compared to the reports filed at the city office.

The October 7-8 visit was accompanied by a medical team from DepEd-Iligan to conduct deworming of nearly 100 pupils in Dulag Elementary School. They also had dental check up.

“Multigrade is a difficult classroom strategy because you’d see here varied grade levels sharing the same classroom and teacher at a time,” said Adelina de los Reyes, education supervisor and
member of the Task Force 4774-1 (Iligan). The task force is a multi-stakeholders network that aims to reverse the dismal situation of education in the city.

Delos Reyes said, however, that the multigrade strategy has to be used to help address the problem of accommodating the increasing number of pupils as against only a few teachers.

There are 19 classes here that are implementing multigrade instruction in accordance to DepEd national office’s instruction.

The multigrade system has been compounded also by the need for skill improvement among teachers.

“The teachers there need more training, the school lacks facilities, no library, and some are sheltered in a temporary buildings not conducive for classroom instruction,” Cherry Mae Limbaco, schools division superintendent of DepEd-Iligan, said.

For the past years, Iligan city has sustained low passing marks. Its elementary pupils got an average of the National Achievement Test (NAT) of 47 percent in 2007, 49 percent in 2008, 51.14 percent in 2009 and slid back to 49.80 percent later this year.

In Dulag Elementary School, Limbaco checked the attendance of enrollees and inspected the conditions of the classroom, reviewed the teachers’ lessons plan and noted the school’s need for facilities and repair of buildings.

Alicia Anghay, education supervisor, has encouraged young pupils “to be present always and hold on to their dreams to become professionals someday”.

Dulag is a village situated 30 kilometers from the city. The school uses a bamboo flag pole. The grade four, five and six pupils share one room and unlike other elementary schools, teachers go into multigrade classroom instruction.

May Varga, education supervisor of basic alternative learning schools (BALS), also met with the adults who were beneficiaries of adult education. BALS is a foundational but integrated education that teaches adults on reading and writing, use of herbal medicines and organic method of farming.

Noronisa Marangit, DepEd coordinator of Madaris instruction, also visited Maranao pupils and reviewed their lessons to know if they can, indeed, read the Arabic encryption.

Delos Reyes said she was concerned about the operation of the small scale mining three kilometers away from the Kalamalamahan high school “because students are hired to work in this sites using the traditional way of segregating gold from the ore." (Violeta M. Gloria / MindaNews)

For a long time I tried to find a Broadcast Radio webstream from Iligan. I recently spotted this image on the Iligan City.Gov website and tried it. I can now hear Iligan Radio right here on my PC in New York USA.

On a previous visit I brought a radio with me to see what was on the radio and found just about everything to be of a non-English language except for some of the lyrics to the songs played. I was not really disapointed as I thought what was I going to expect ?

Thanks to this radio portal I can now listen to DXRJ 1476 Iligan City right here in New York on my PC. There is some English and in some of the spoken dialog I can recognize a few of the words I learned in Bisaya / tagalog.

Thanks for having this portal on the city website. Although it is half way around the world from me, things of Iligan seem to become closer all the time on the internet !

^^Love-hate yong relationship ni @capricorn1 with Iligan. :ohno:

Chili sauce brand name dispute raises interest on IPR laws

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY — The interest of Northern Mindanao entrepreneurs on intellectual property rights (IPR) was raised after a case involving hot chili sauce makers in this city and in the neighboring Iligan in Lanao del Norte was resolved recently.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) officials said the case involved Green Gold Gourmet, maker of Suka Pinakurat from Iligan, and Estrella T. Borja’s "Chiga," a hot chili sauce brand produced in Cagayan de Oro. Green Gold Gourmet, owned by the Stuart-del Rosario family, produces a similar product branded "Chigar," which came out earlier in the market. The packaging of the two products was very similar, Trade department officials said.

During mediation at the DTI, Ms. Borja agreed to rename her hot chili sauce.

"We will be changing our trademark," Ms. Borja said. "It is a waste of the stickers and packages since we have already printed a lot using our former name and logo."

The case’s resolution has raised awareness in intellectual property rights, especially among small businessmen. Last weekend, more than a hundred professionals and entrepreneurs attended a seminar on intellectual property held by the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP Philippines) and the DTI.

IP Philippines officials led by Emmanuel Mendoza and Felicidad Jarata discussed the differences between patents, copyrights, and trademarks, explaining that intellectual property, although intangible, can be stolen or used by unauthorized individuals.

This was the second seminar in the province and the fourth in the region. Similar seminars were held in Bukidnon last year, and in Lanao del Norte early this month.

"Interested entrepreneurs should attend these seminars because they discuss the issues in layman’s terms that could easily be understood," said Elizabeth C. Tagaylo, senior trade and industry development specialist.

IPAG thrills thousands

Over thirty five thousand spectators trooped to watch the 15 shows of the well-acclaimed MSU-IIT Integrated Performing Arts Guild’s Tales From Mindanao and its sequel Tatlo sa Isa in IPAG’s first two legs of its roads shows for its 32nd Season.

The road shows that each IPAG season includes opened its first leg last August 9 to 16 in the provinces of Laguna, Batangas, and Manila and its second leg August 28 – September 2 in Manila schools.

These dance-music productions of Mindanao tri-people stories performed at the University of the East, University of Asia and the Pacific, Miriam College, Laguna Polytechnic State University, and the Batangas State University. Full house audiences filled up each of the 5 shows at the 5,000-seat Batangas Coliseum in Batangas City.

Tales is perhaps Philippine Theatre’s most-traveled, most-watched, and most–performed dance theater production today. It is also IPAG’s signature international touring production that has been performed in over 100 festivals worldwide. Mobile and easily mountable, this production presents its narratives in the dance and music mediums of Mindanao cultures. Its highly entertaining quality has made this a favorite enjoyed by all audiences of all ages.

The IPAG 32nd Season is supported by Pioneer Insurance and Surety Corporation, the NCCA, and the MSU-IIT.

Tales continues its road tours for the 32nd season with more performances in various Luzon and Mindanao cities and schools from September 2009 to March 2010.

Mga kalihukan alayon sa pag-obserbar sa World Food Day, gipahigayon sa atong dapit
Wednesday, 14 October 2009

(mta)

9:10 PM Wed Oct 14 ( Iligan Time ) the website is comming in here ok at this time, maybe a bit slower than other times but it is there. I am not sure where the actual website originates from or where its servers are . I think that somewhere in the chain, borwnouts etc. could have an effect on the websites availability.

If you want to listen to Iligan Radio, once you get to the page for it, put that page in your favorites, then you may be able to get that page without having to go through the Iligan.gov.ph website every time you want to listen.

I have the impression that this station may be a daytime only station ? Anyone know it's hours of operation ? I remember someone telling me once that it goes off the air around 10: PM Iligan Time ?

Possibly I will try to stop in and see DXRJ the next time I come to visit. To me, this would be something interesting. I continue to find things that interest me about Iligan, many of which I find out about right here on SSC-Iligan !

ive been to trendline (near jollibee) kanina...i like what they did with the area...parang shopping street... improve lang ung facade ng mga stores plus more plants, tas tapusin ung on.going constructions, payts na!!..:>...the fiber glass roofing is a plus..:>....

that npc park sure is a big plus!...i last visited npc when i was 4th HS..:>...kulang pa yung landscaping..:>...i like the structures though... are those railings cement or wood?...i'd say its tacky if its cement...

is there an entrance fee for the park?...corkage fee, the likes?... (its a good venue for ssc-iligan meet..:>..hehe)

p.s. just watched time traveller's wife...ultra cinema is nice pala..:>...

:) Capricon1's post may be or can be used as a wake up call to those leaders in the city to make some move and stimulate Iligan's business sector.though not that constructive as he claims he's from the city also,i recommend that he address his concerns to the LGU's they might need some reminders and some wake up calls.an oil that settled down for some time needs another oil to recirculate it.Iligan is Iligan no city can take it's name and place it's just the people governing the place that concentrated and invested much time on politicking..:ohno:

(mta)
