9:10 PM Wed Oct 14 ( Iligan Time ) the website is comming in here ok at this time, maybe a bit slower than other times but it is there. I am not sure where the actual website originates from or where its servers are . I think that somewhere in the chain, borwnouts etc. could have an effect on the websites availability.

If you want to listen to Iligan Radio, once you get to the page for it, put that page in your favorites, then you may be able to get that page without having to go through the Iligan.gov.ph website every time you want to listen.

I have the impression that this station may be a daytime only station ? Anyone know it's hours of operation ? I remember someone telling me once that it goes off the air around 10: PM Iligan Time ?

Possibly I will try to stop in and see DXRJ the next time I come to visit. To me, this would be something interesting. I continue to find things that interest me about Iligan, many of which I find out about right here on SSC-Iligan !

SP magdapit og dugang cable TV companies sa siyudad

Friday, 16 October 2009

(mta)

Iligan City Website (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3392&Itemid=368)

Nick Baker, recently featured on BBC Worldservice Radio will soon begin a world tour of Internet Cafes and his destinations will be charted by those who use Internet Cafes. Here is a link to one of the articles about this event. I wonder if Nick will learn of Iligan City and come for a visit !

Hi guys! :) First post here... but I've been a lurker for ages! Thank you very much to everyone who're tending my homesickness! hehehe. I really appreciate the pictures during the fiesta... made me miss Iligan so much, I cried :'( kay nasuya!

Sir Bob, I saw your YouTube video on your Iligan vacation months ago... I am so glad you grew to love our city... and Jollibee! Yay! ;)

If you don't mind, I would really recommend trying out Baboy Sulop (wild boar) adobo or kilawin-style the next time you visit Iligan. They say it's best with beer and a hearty conversation with pals. Healthier than pork, too! ;)

The next thing on my list of foods to try is Durain. I have heard mixed comments about it, some like it, some don't and some have said you have to hold your nose closed to get past the " aroma " of it LOL. Another item I look forward to trying at a future time is Lechon ( roast pig, to me ) . I know it is like a delicasy there usually served at special and festive events and that the outer part which I believe is seasoned is one of the most favored parts of it.

While I was at Marvella Beach Resort on my last visit there was some kind of party at a table not far from me and sure enough, I recognized the box as soon as they brought it in. From a distance I observed the consumption of it although I did not want to appear intrusive and go closer for a better look. Here, I enjoy eating a Ham & Cheese sandwich, Ham Steak, and bacon all of course being derived from a pig. I just don't know if I would feel comfortable with a roasted pig in its entirety just staring at me while I am eating it. That would certainly be a new experience for me. I recently learned that Lechon can be bought in sleces by the kilo or maybe even less. Maybe I will try that first.

I experienced my first taste of San Miguel Beer at Club 7, followed of course by " a few more "

Per your suggestion I will add Baboy Sulop to the list of things to try on a future visit !

Prior to my first visit to Iligan, while I was researching the possibilities of actually going there I learned of many health advisories and precautions for foriegners visiting The Philippines. It almost turned my plans into a no-go situation unless I could come up with some kind of " Fail Safe " source of food.

I remembered the picture I saw right here on SSC-Iligan of Jollibee, Tibanga and started doing some research on Jollibee Foods Corp. After that I knew I had found my " Fail Safe " source of food !

Further information I recieved from a reliable American Blogger who has lived in Mindanao for about a decade advised me that if my digestive system was any where near normal and if I used common sense, chances were that I would not have any problem consuming just about any kind of food there. After my first few days in Iligan I did go to some of the other eating establishments and had no problems ! I did however stick with bottled water and no ice cubes in beverages.

Welcome to SSC-Iligan, " sansan ".

Yes, you are correct Sansan, Bob Martin, better known as " Mindanao Bob "
I have been reading his website blogs for a few years now and I have always found a high degree of accuracy in his information. He has become one of the major promoters of Mindanao to the rest of the world.

Yeah, sort of.

For those who haven't read it yet, below is a re-posting of my proposal:

Here's my version of a revised system of local government in the country. It's influenced by the Canadian model, which I am familiar with. But it's adapted to the Philippine setting, by giving some powers that normally belong to a lower tier in Canada to a higher level (for fiscal reasons), as well as patterning the regional government structure after the current ARMM model. Taxation will based on the Australian model where the regions and the central government cooperate on the issue, with the latter having the sole power to collect and levy "duties of customs and excise" (such as sales taxes, income taxes, etc.). This is to prevent barriers to free trade between jurisdictions, which is what Canadian provinces are currently experiencing in terms of inter-provincial trade due to provincial regulatory boards and province-centric tax measures.

NATIONAL GOVERNMENT
powers: justice, defense, foreign relations, immigration and naturalization, banking and currency, property and civil rights, trade and commerce, postal service, international or inter-regional transportation and communication, criminal law, insurance and pensions, ancestral domains, policing/health care/education (shared with regions), census
head: President of the Republic (elected every 4 years, serving only a maximum of two terms)
executive entity: national cabinet
legislative entity:
-Lower House (composed of a maximum of 200 district members, 50 party-list members)
-Upper House (composed of a maximum of 50 senators, elected at-large)

REGIONS [rehiyon] (1st level)
powers: supervision over regional divisions, regional legislation, policing/health care/education (joint with national government), social welfare, intra-regional transportation and communication, natural resources, economic development, environment
executive entity: executive council (governor + regional cabinet)
legislative entity: regional assembly (vice-governor + variable number of members: 1 assembly member per 120,000 population)
has power to create, abolish, merge or substantially alter the boundaries of regional divisions under its jurisdiction, but within guidelines specified below

REGIONAL DIVISIONS [partido or kalawigan] (2nd level)
powers: supervision over local councils, by-laws, culture and sports, local infrastructure, local public transit
executive entity: varies
legislative entity: varies

Regional divisions are classified into either:

Highly urbanized divisions (cities) [lungsod]
= requirements: contiguous urban area of more than 50 sq. km. + population of over 100,000 -or- population density above 500/sq. km. + locally-generated income of above PHP 100 million
= additional powers: by-law enforcement, waste collection and disposal, water distribution, licensing, fire protection, local sewage, property taxes, parks & recreation, libraries, animal services, local emergency planning
= executive entity: city board (mayor + office heads)
= legislative entity: city council (vice mayor + councilors, elected by zone)

Semi-urban divisions (large towns/small cities) [bayan]
= requirements: semi-urban area with population of 50,000 to 100,000 + minimum locally-generated income of PHP 30 million
= additional powers: by-law enforcement, waste collection and disposal, water distribution, licensing, fire protection, local sewage, property taxes, parks & recreation, libraries, animal services, local emergency planning
= executive entity: town board (mayor + office heads)
= legislative entity: town council (vice mayor + councilors, elected from zones)

Regular divisions (small towns) [banda]
= requirements: population of over 50,000 with minimum locally-generated income of PHP 10 million OR minimum population of 30,000 with locally-generated income between PHP 30 to 75 million
= executive entity: municipal board (mayor + office heads)
= legislative entity: municipal council (vice mayor + councilors)
= powers: by-law enforcement (shared with all councils), licensing, property taxes, libraries, local emergency planning, waste collection and disposal, fire protection, local sewage, parks & recreation, water distribution

Unincorporated areas [ilangan]
= uninhabited or declared wilderness/natural areas under the jurisdiction of the region and/or national government
= no powers, not divided into local councils

LOCAL COUNCILS (3rd level)
= elected officials: head councilor + zone council/barangay council that submits recommendations to and is consulted by the city/municipal council on matters concerning their zone/barangay.
= created by the regional assembly or the city/municipal councils at their own will, but must follow the guidelines below.

Local councils are classified into either:

Zones [purok] (in highly-urbanized divisions and semi-urban divisions)
= requirements: contiguous urban area with population between 10,000-30,000 in HUDs and 5,000-15,000 in SUDs

Barangay (in regular divisions)
= requirements: village/hamlet (barrio/sitio) or a cluster of these with a population between 4,000 to 10,000

Notes:
*Provinces are abolished, the region is the primary level of local government.
*Local councils form the basic tier of local government, differentiated into zones (in HUDs and SUDs), and barangays in regular divisions.
*Many revenue-sharing provisions of the Local Government Code of 1991 will be retained, but with increased shares of revenue for LGUs and a revised formula for calculating IRA shares: with the different types of regional divisions taken into account, local councils removed from the sharing formula (because they are going to be salaried officials of the regional division), and with the regions getting a much larger share because of the additional powers and responsibilities that they have.
*It is up to the local residents to decide how the local councils will be formed (and they must pass the criteria), and the regional government will assist in providing the necessary information to make enlightened decisions.
*However, local councils are not given a share of the national wealth directly because of their reduced capacity compared to the current barangay. This thins out the bureaucracy by a great amount, and marks a return to the days before the "Barrio Charter" of Marcos was introduced. The Barrio Charter essentially incorporated all barrios and converted them to what are now barangays, giving them legal standing and a share of responsibilities and powers in local governance. In this proposal, the basic unit of local governance (zone in HUDs and SUDs/barangay in regular divisions) just serves a consultative function and nothing else. The regions and regional divisions are the ones that will get a share of the national wealth through IRA sharing, and they are held accountable on however they decide to spend the IRA share they get (in addition to their local income) within their respective jurisdictions. Because in my opinion, many barangays of today accomplish little in the way of improving lives in the countryside, and serve only as smaller arenas within which political dynasties are born, nurtured and maintained. We might as well pull the plug on the barangay experiment and use the resources assured to them to strengthen other tiers of local governance.
*Jurisdiction over maritime resources by all local government entities shall not extend beyond the current limits set by law. All other maritime areas not under the jurisdiction of any region belong to the national government.
*Because of population and income requirements, many current municipalities and barangays will have to be merged:
- Provinces will form whole or part of regional divisions: small provinces such as Camiguin or Batanes will become full regional divisions, while populous provinces such as Bulacan or Cebu will be divided into many ones.
- Most current low-income municipalities will be merged with others in order to form regional municipalities, and demoted to barangay status. This is intended to lessen the distortion of the amount of effort and resources being expended on areas that do not necessarily require it.
- Current barangays that have not met the population requirement will be merged with others to form larger barangays.

Structure summary:
National government
Regional government
Regional divisions, either:
(Highly-urbanized divisions) -> divided into zones
(Semi-urban divisions) -> divided into zones
(Regular divisions) -> divided into barangays
(Unincorporated areas)

-population: 4.0 million

-population: 5.1 million
-composition: present Region X, plus Lanao del Sur

XVI - Northeast Mindanao (capital: Butuan)
-population: 2.3 million
-composition: present Region XIII

XVII - Southeast Mindanao (capital: Davao City)
-population: 4.2 million
-composition: present Region XI

XVIII - South Central Mindanao (capital: Tacurong)
-population: 5.4 million
-composition: present Region XII, plus Maguindanao

There is a reason why the regions are configured the way they are. Apart from Metro Manila, Mindoro-Palawan and Northeast Mindanao, they have relatively the same population (around 4-6 million), in order for the regional authorities to be able to provide more competent service to relatively equal portions of the national population. The capitals are chosen due to their central geographic position within the region. While some capitals may not be currently as accessible as compared to other major cities in the region (Tayabas, Passi, Iriga, Taytay compared to Lucena/Antipolo, Iloilo/Roxas, Naga/Legazpi, Puerto Princesa/Calapan), this is intended to compel the national and regional governments to further develop transportation infrastructure.

Removing the ethnic component that's so pervasive in many proposals and focusing instead on plain economic sense will cultivate a notion of shared responsibility among all Filipinos, regardless of linguistic or religious affiliation. The motivation behind this greater devolution of powers is to bring government closer to the people in order to achieve better results in social and economic development around the country - ethnicity is just a distraction that enhances divisions and is something that I believe we should never let take the center stage and break us apart (this is why only neutral geographic names are given to the regions). However, it should be a matter of national policy to recognize the diversity that exists in this country, with all of us recognizing each other's rights and responsibilities in the name of democracy, justice and equality. This includes recognizing local vernaculars as working languages in local government in addition to the national and official languages (Filipino and English) by making government forms, government transactions, legislative materials and executive orders available in all languages that constitute at least 1/4 of the LGU's population (example: Bahasa Sug and Chavacano will be among the working languages of Region XIV, while Subanon will be among the working languages of regional divisions in the Zamboanga Peninsula that have a substantial Subanon population), as well as establishing a national system of language institutes across the country (at least one in each region) with the aim to record, study, intellectualize and improve the literary tradition of the languages that exist in the regions in order for local languages to become the tool by which the common folk can truly understand the democratic process. And, while people are welcome to express their faith through their clothing (such as wearing a cross pendant or a hijab) or actions (such as prayer), a strict application of the separation between church and state should be implemented on all government property and activity - meaning no Biblical quotes etched on facades of capitols, no invocations on government functions, and no government-funded madrasahs (as sectarian schools should be left to the private sector).

My proposal is indeed a hard pill to swallow, but I think it's possible. This requires constitutional change, because the whole philosophy of the Republic as enshrined in the constitution will have to be revised to reflect our diversity as a nation. I believe that in diversity lies our strength, and the best way to be as inclusive of all Filipinos as possible is to bring government closer to the people.

hindi sila na tuloy sa lot beside kimberly, due to failure of negotiation to one of the owner, dahil ayaw nya e benta ang part nya, he wants lease.. pero may 2 lots pa pag pipilian nila 1st is the price business park and 2nd is lot sa sta. felomina (sea side, near san miguel corp). according to my father mas gusto ng mga taga SM yung sta. felomina lot . its about 4km. away.

Pagmugna sa Lone District of Iligan, hingpit nang nahimong balaod
Friday, 23 October 2009

(mta)

its not hypermart, mall na ang itatayo nila.. the real reason why they went here in iligan because they see that iligan is a big market dahil ang mga taga lanao del norte, sur, marawi, ozamis, mis. occ even as far as pagadian and part of mis. or. they dont need na to go to cdo just shop there, so what the SM did instead of opening another SM in cdo they decide to open here in iligan, and according to SM project management team that SM cdo is loosing as much as 200,000/ day, is the only SM mall has a very low income and that's the only SM mall has no rental fee to all the tenant, they will just pay for the water, light and 10-20% ng sales nila ng whole month! just to survive!

Iligan City supports "October 24 International Day of Climate Action"

by Mark A. Cervantes

Iligan City, Lanao del Norte (22 October) -- The City Council of Iligan City supports the "October 24th International Day of Climate Action" and the "Historical Journey 2: Lawig Handuraw" of EcoWEB, Inc to be held on November 26-27.

The International Day of Climate Action will be held at MSU-IIT, Iligan City.

Members of Iligan climaX (Climate Action Alliance) represented by Ma. Anita Sescon of the Mindanao Commission on Women, Mark Cervantes and Emedina Juevesano of EcoWEB, Inc, Laura Engel of DED-GTZ and Jun Tenorio of Civil Society Organization-Forum for Peace, appeared before the members of the Iligan City Council recently, upon request of Councilor Chonilo Ruiz, Chair of the Committee on Environment.

Mark Cervantes presented a brief rationale about the October 24 International Day of Climate Action and the significance of the 350 number.

He stressed that the event on October 24 is in solidarity with 350.org to call upon the United Nations to put stricter terms on the Kyoto Protocol in greenhouse gas emissions during their COP15 meeting in Copenhagen this coming December.

He also laid down the series of events on October 24.

Anita Sescon stressed that change has to begin from oneself and the October 24 event will try to make it happen.

The group prepared the Thoughts and Acts for Mother Earth or TAME as a commitment of the Iliganon in response to climate change.

Laura Engel also presented an equally important issue in Lanao del Norte which is armed conflict and peace.

She gave an overview about the "Historical Journey 2: Lawig Handuraw" which will kick off November 26-27. She is also active in connecting climate change issues to conflict.

Councilor Orlando Maglinao raised that the major culprit of greenhouse gas emissions in Iligan City are the industries. He then asked if the group also invited the industries to take part in the event.

In response, Cervantes stressed that October 24 is just the start of a longer engagement and involvement of Iligan on climate change.

He then urged the city council to consider passing an ordinance on climate change with clear mitigation and adaptation mechanisms since Iligan City is vulnerable to flood.

Councilor Chonilo Ruiz asserted that the city government has an existing Solid Waste and Management Act and now finishing its Environment Code. The suggested Climate Change Ordinance would be very timely to reinforce the policy initiatives.

Councilor Olvera raised that one of the major culprit of carbon emissions is the automotive industry and asked if the event on October 24th also address this concern.

Cervantes replied that a "no emissions parade" will be held in the morning of October 24. That is why climate change mitigation is also a change in lifestyle. It encourages people to take a hike or bike if they will be going somewhere near.

Cervantes also shared that its partner NGO, the Kalimudan Foundation, Inc. based in Marawi City will be having a simultaneous event wherein on October 24, all the vehicles will stop for 1 hour to reduce carbon emissions.

In support to the event, the city council has passed a resolution requesting all 44 barangays in Iligan City and the Sanggunian Kabataan to participate in the event.

As way forward, the city council might consider crafting a Climate Change Ordinance with clear mitigation and adaptation mechanisms like disaster risk reduction (DRR).

Iligan climaX (Climate Action Alliance) is composed of EcoWEB, Inc, MSU-IIT (OVCRE, IPDM, DR), DED-GTZ, CAFOD, Mindanao Commission on Women, City Government of Iligan (Office of Mayor Lawrence Cruz, Office of Vice Mayor Henry Dy), Councilor Chonilo Ruiz, Councilor Orlando Maglinao, Councilor Ariel Anghay, Social Action Center of Iligan, CSO-FP, Serviamus Foundation, Save Iligan Rivers Movement, BIRTHDEV, Kapamamagopa Inc, Kalimudan Foundation, Inc., Mindanews, 104th Brigade, Philippine Eagles, SALIDA, ICCRN, KRI, RASFI, RCJP and Kumon-Iligan. More pork seen as 2 provinces get new districts

October 23, 2009 20:48:00
Philippine Daily Inquirer

THE COMMISSION ON ELECtions may have to print longer ballots following the creation of new congressional districts in Cebu and Lanao del Norte.

President Macapagal-Arroyo signed two more in a string of new laws that would create more seats in the House of Representatives next year.

On Thursday, Ms Arroyo signed Republic Act No. 9726 that created the lone congressional district of Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu province.

On Oct. 20, the President signed RA 9724 which creates a separate congressional district in Iligan City.

Rep. Nerissa Soon-Ruiz, who authored RA 9726, said residents of Lapu-Lapu City could elect their first congressman next year.

The new district is entitled to P70 million in pork barrel funds, money which had been associated with massive corruption.

Rep. Vicente Belmonte Jr., of Iligan City, said he would continue to represent Iligan in the House of Representatives if he wins in next year’s elections.

its not hypermart, mall na ang itatayo nila.. the real reason why they went here in iligan because they see that iligan is a big market dahil ang mga taga lanao del norte, sur, marawi, ozamis, mis. occ even as far as pagadian and part of mis. or. they dont need na to go to cdo just shop there, so what the SM did instead of opening another SM in cdo they decide to open here in iligan, and according to SM project management team that SM cdo is loosing as much as 200,000/ day, is the only SM mall has a very low income and that's the only SM mall has no rental fee to all the tenant, they will just pay for the water, light and 10-20% ng sales nila ng whole month! just to survive!

WOW thats a good news to us all iliganon.Magkakaroon na rin tayo ng SM.

with the creation of the new lone legislative district of the city of iligan, will it also follow that there will be a new engineering district for iligan city since it is at present under the jurisdiction of lanao del norte 2nd engineering district? (the coverage area corresponds to the 1st legislative district of lanao del norte with iligan city included before creating the lone legislative district for iligan...) :)

^^

Engineering districts are a different matter, they need separate legislation. Ilocos Norte, for example, has three engineering districts while having only two congressional districts.

On a related note, there's another bill in the Senate for the reapportionment of the 1st and 2nd districts of Lanao del Norte, which seeks to make the population between the two more even, now that Iligan (formerly in the 1st district) is no longer included with the province's representation.

^^

maybe our soon to be elected lone district representative might as well file a new house bill to create a separate engineering district for iligan city or to convert the present lanao del norte 2nd engineering district to iligan city engineering district in the next congress after the may 2010 polls...:)

Matagal tagal pa to. At least mga 3 years kasi ang SM usually nagla-landbanking pa yan. Gaya yan ng SM CdeO nun na 3 years after acquiring the lot. Felomina. I can see a very bright future diyan sa Sta.

I personally prefer that SM would be established in Sta Filomina as we have properties in that area, but assuming what you said on here is true, don't you think it's of SM's best interest to establish the mall in Tubod or Tominubo area since, like what you've said, SM's target market isn't just the Iliganons but also those from Tubod, Lanao Norte; Marawi, Lanao del Sur; Ozamis, Missamis Occ and Pagadian?

but pryce is too expensive! they already went there, mas gusto parin nila ang sa sta. felomina lot...

aside from it's extremely expensive, it also is small for an SM Mall.

BTW, there's already a coffee shop / snack bar in the area. They serve really good food. The ambience is really cool despite its small space. Check it out people. One of the owners is a friend of mine who's the brother of my former classmate in La Salle. Really cool people too.

Here's one concrete example...
If you're a first timer in Iligan City and you happened to pass by the CBD Roads, mashocked ka na lang ka harap muna mga sasakyan because "One Way pala yung road...atras ka na naman to find another road..."
Many times nako nabiktima nito dati sa ILIGAN!

I've also noticed that actually. Aside from they're narrow... there also have plenty of cross-section roads. But since we can't do something about it at the moment, the best that the local government (with the help of the local business community) is to convert them into walkways, something similar to what they did in England, where they converted those small and/or narrow roads to park-like walkways where the shoppers can stroll around by walking instead of riding, allowing them to actually visit more shops or hop in and see a few items on display in every boutiques. It keeps the city dwellers as well as the visitors and shoppers healthy and fit as they're forced to walk rather than ride on their cars.

The main roads then will then be converted into one-way, and at the end of the major roads will there be multi-level parking similar to what they have in G-Mall.

Look at the pix below as examples. The photos aren’t mine, but I’ve actually been to those places and they're pretty lovely places to go to.

Last year’s champion was UP Diliman and was also the first place finisher during the preliminary exams this year. Too bad they were beaten by a team from AdMU (lost by one question only). UP Diliman has won this contest 6 times or the highest number of wins in the entire history of the FINEX Contest. Ateneo has 3 wins so far while De La Salle has 2 wins. No other school has won the FINEX other than UP Diliman, Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle University – Manila, the so-called, Big-3 in Philippine higher education.

This was MSU-IIT's closest finish to win this contest. Their performance was splendid though they’ve lost to the giant schools in Manila. They’re the number 1 school in Mindanao and they've beaten some top foreign schools this year including Assumption University of Thailand, and Thailand's best university, Chulalongkorn University.

According to the organizers: The FINEX is finance, economics and accounting-related contest and is patterned after the Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) Level 1 Program. CFA is a global designation and the gold standard in the investment profession.

Congrats to UP Diliman and MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology!

@ R M L

I have also been on streets in England as you have pictured here and it does make an interesting shopping experience. When shopping malls start appearing however many small shops like this end up being financially forced to close down and go out of business forever. They just can not compete with the large mall type or other national chain stores who buy in such large quanty they can afford giving a substantially discounted price compared to the smaller independent shops.

Maybe a second Mall in Iligan might be something nice to have but any more than that and there is a good chance that some of the individuality and character of Iligan will have a major change. This may or may not be for the better I am not in that good of a position to really make an informed opinion on that. I am going primarily from what I have seen happen here.

When " Home Depot " ( large national chain of home improvement stores ) opened up in my area about 10 years ago it put 16 independent hardware stores out of business, in this area and now only 1 remains.

One advantage Malls do have there that may not be so noticeable here most of the time, it gives people a place to go to get away from the heat.

I am glad that with the ease of Digital Photography so much of Iligan the way it is at the present time and going back a few years has been able to be captured in pictures.

I look forward to exploring the rest of the Gaisano Iligan Mall that was not finished on my last visit.

Climate rallies worldwide mark No. 350

Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 02:01:00 10/26/2009

Filed Under: Global Warming, Climate Change, Environmental Issues, Protest

NEW YORK—From Asia to the Americas, Europe and Middle East, activists on Saturday rallied to mobilize public opinion against global warming 50 days ahead of a crucial UN climate summit.

The activists held events marking the number that the world needs to reach to prevent disastrous climate change: 350.

The number represents 350 parts per million of carbon dioxide emissions that the atmosphere can bear to avoid runaway global warming. The atmosphere currently reaches the safe upper limit of 390 ppm of carbon dioxide, according to research by NASA climate scientist James Hanse cited by 350.org.

In southern Philippines, some 1,000 students, soldiers and activists in Iligan City formed a human chain in the shape of number 350.

In Sydney, thousands of people assembled on the steps of the Opera House waving placards bearing the logo 350.

In New York’s Times Square, a crowd of demonstrators gathered around giant screens beaming images of the coordinated mass actions that organizers said were taking place in “more than 180 countries” at 5,200 events.

“It was ordinary people rallying around a scientific data point,” said 350.org founder Bill McKibben. “Nothing like that has ever happened before.”

McKibben, an environmentalist and author of “The End of Nature,” said the day was unique because it emphasized the science behind a politically complicated topic.

In Venezuela, volunteers formed a human chain marking the number zero on the beach at Catia La Mar, north of Caracas, to mark the spot where they said the ocean would reach if global warming is not stopped.

McKibben said volunteers also sent in photos of separate groups forming the number 350 around the Dead Sea, in Jordan, Israel and Palestinian territory.

Copenhagen meeting

Many of the events referred to the Copenhagen conference scheduled in December that will seek to reach a new global climate change treaty to replace the 1997 Kyoto Protocol on carbon dioxide emissions.

The Copenhagen summit has been billed as a last chance in avoiding a global catastrophe that could be felt for generations.

McKibben said there were lessons to be learned from the Kyoto Protocol, which the United States did not join.

“We saw what happened,” he said. “Everybody walked away once it was done, and there was no real progress. We need to pick up the pace.”

In France, politicians received a “wake-up” call from several hundred Parisians who chose clocks as their protest symbol.

Protesters, who met on a central square in Paris, set their alarm clocks and mobile phones to ring at 12:18 p.m. (1018 GMT) in reference to the closing date of the UN summit in Copenhagen scheduled on Dec. 7-18.

Environmentalists are hoping that world leaders shall be able to thresh out a new treaty curbing greenhouse gas emissions in place of the Kyoto Protocol, which expires in 2012.

Talks may fail

But senior officials from the United States and China, the world’s two largest polluters, have warned the December talks may fail.

There is growing concern that a treaty deal in Copenhagen could be hampered by issues that include US domestic politics and the problems of securing agreement between developed and developing countries.

In Berlin, some 350 protesters wearing masks with the face of German Chancellor Angela Merkel rallied in front of the Brandenburg Gate at the city center.

In London, more than 600 people gathered beneath the London Eye Ferris wheel by the River Thames to arrange themselves into the shape of the number 5, according to organizers Campaign against Climate Change.

An aerial photograph of the event will be added to pictures of a giant number 3 and number 0 from around the world.

“Hundreds of thousands of people are taking part (globally) and for us that’s so important, to have people out on the streets,” said campaign activist Abi Edgar. “We want serious action on climate change and we want it now.”

F note

Across the Thames, some 100 musicians playing trumpets, trombones, saxophones and clarinets gathered outside parliament to play the same note—an F made by the frequency of 350 Hz—for 350 seconds, organizers said.

In the Lebanese capital of Beirut, hundreds of activists wearing snorkels demonstrated at key archaeological sites. They gathered around the Roman ruins in central Beirut, in the ancient eastern city of Baalbek and along the coast, carrying placards bearing the 350 logo.

“It’s not the first time Beirut will have gone under water,” Wael Hmaidan of the IndyACT that organized Beirut’s protests said as he explained the wearing of snorkels.

“But this time, it’s going down because of climate change, and not earthquakes,” Hmaidan said.

‘Sun, wind, right now!’

Environmental activists in the Turkish metropolis of Istanbul staged their protest in a boat, unfurling a banner reading, “Sun, wind, right now!” under the main bridge linking Asia and Europe over the Bosphorus Strait.

They then sailed to the ancient Maiden’s Tower, which sits on a tiny islet in the Bosphorus, and unfurled another banner reading “Jobs, climate, justice.”

Events in Asia included demonstrators in Dhaka riding bicycles to highlight one way of cutting emissions.

In Jakarta, around 100 students from the London School of Public Relations gathered to form the symbolic number 350, coordinator Candy Tolosa said on Detik.com news website. Reports from Richel Umel, Inquirer Mindanao, Agence France-Presse and Associated Press

Army Sultan’s shot for unity in Mindanao

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines - The 104th Infantry (Sultan) Brigade of the Philippine Army, deployed in a culturally diverse and a conflict area of Northern Mindanao, attempts to further bring harmony with the Pagari Park.
The word “pagari” means friend or friendship in Maranao.

The park is a newly developed garden, converted from a former dump of volcanic rocks at the heart of the Sultan Brigade camp in Iligan City, with the support of those who shared the thought of promoting peace.

Amid the festive atmosphere of the 9th Founding Anniversary of the Army’s Sultan Brigade on Mondayr, Former Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Dimaporo — a Christian married to a Muslim and a strong advocate for cultural harmony and eco-tourism —graced the inauguration of the park.

Also, to show unity in support of the purpose of the park, Iligan Diocese Catholic Bishop Elenito Galido, Islam Aleem Elias Macarandas, and Lumad Datu Rolando Soong made the interfaith joint consecration.

Colonel Benito de Leon, the brigade commander, explained that “pagari” was chosen since the place will be used to receive guests, and a spot dedicated to promote friendship and harmony. The three corners in the garden represent the major Philippine Muslim cultures — Maguindanao, Maranao, and Tausug — that have inspired the brigade moniker of “Sultan.”

De Leon was conferred the Maranao honorary title of Sultan Romaponut (Leader of Peace) for his peace efforts during the MILF hostilities in 2000.

During the inauguration of the park, guests had the chance to have a glimpse of the different traditional wear and sample respective delicacies. The calming landscape easily made it a favorite for pictorial settings. Saturnina Rodil, a professor of Mindanao State University-Institute for Peace and Development and a theosophist, commented that Pagari Park” has a strong good vibes.

then para for real ug walay hokos pokos..in person ang pagbayad didto sa tao nga magpaprint sa tshirt or kadtong wala sa iligan, ihatag lang ila bayad tru their representative nga naa dha sa Iligan. sa eninglish pa...SIMPLE and EASY!

Iligan City is now RP's first and only solid LP city – Noynoy
by Violeta M. Gloria/MindaNews
Friday, 30 October 2009 23:00

ILIGAN CITY (MindaNews / October 30) -- Yellow ribbons tied on trees and bridges as well as hugs and kisses met Noynoy Aquino in his sorties in flood-hit areas here Thursday and where Liberal Party executives also later swore in more local officials to galvanize its firm foothold in the city.

Aquino arrived here at 3:30 pm Thursday and met religious and political leaders of Iligan and Lanao del Norte at a gymnasium of Lyceum College here. He and his team passed by the city cathedral to meet religious leaders and took the route via the flood-hit barangay Tambacan; and was finally met by women elders who hugged and kissed him as he strode through the gymnasium’s aisle of Lyceum while others chanted “Noynoy! Noynoy!”.

Noynoy was joined by Sen. Franklin Drilon, Representatives Ruffy Biazon (Muntinlupa) and Tj Guingona (Bukidnon, 2nd District), former Rep. Neric Acosta (Bukidnon, 1st District), Vicente “Varf” Belmonte (Iligan, 1st District) and City Mayor Lawrence Cruz.

Former Rep. Dabs Mangotara and former Maigo town mayor Rafael Rizalda also met him.

Thousands of local officials underwent orientation about Liberal Party in this event and voluntarily took the oath of affiliation officiated by Drilon.

“Iligan City is the only city of the country whose officials from congressman, mayor, councilors and barangay officials are now members of Liberal Party,” Belmonte said.

Liberal Party now has a membership of four senators, 20 congressman, 12 governors, 10 vice governors, 89 board members, nine city mayors, 10 vice mayors, 125 councilors, 163 municipal mayors, 139 vice mayors and 1,075 councilors.

Belmonte said he and Mayor Cruz had earlier sought the help of Aquino and Drilon to have the city declared as a lone legislative district covering 44 barangays. President Gloria Arroyo later signed it into law effective November this year. (Violeta M. Gloria / MindaNews)

Policarpio, Allado Construction ug Jejor’s Construction.

Nagkantidad ang maong aspeto sa proyekto og 195 milyones, 57 mil, nuwebe centos quarenta y tres pesos og trienta y dos centavos (Php195,057,943.32), ang actual calculated bid price sa kontraktor.
Base kini sa rekomendasyon sa Bids and Awards Committee diha sa BAC Resolution No. 144, series of 2009 nga napasar niadtong Oktobre 18 ning tuiga.

(mta)

(boy decena)

Patrombon improves jr world net rankings

By KRISTEL SATUMBAGA
November 4, 2009, 7:30pm

Jeson Patrombon’s year-long international campaign and hard work are slowly paying off after his International Tennis Federation (ITF) world rankings improved by 91 notches.

Patrombon, 16, jumped from No. 242 two weeks ago to No. 151 this week – his highest world ranking in his young and promising career.

The Iligan City native earned valuable points at the Osaka Mayor’s Cup-World Super Junior Tennis Championships in Japan, a Grade A tournament which offers similar ranking points to Grand Slam events. His quarterfinal finish earned him 80 points.

Top Filipino junior netter Francis Casey Alcantara, on the other hand, saw his ranking fall from No. 34 to No. 55 this week.

Alcantara, who won the Australian Open doubles title alongside Taiwanese partner Hsieh Cheng-peng this year, lost in the Round of 32 of the World Super Juniors

Blast hits Lanao Norte power transmission tower

By Katherine Evangelista
INQUIRER.net

MANILA, Philippines – An improvised explosive device (IED) planted by a still unknown group exploded before dawn Thursday damaging power transmission tower in Lanao del Norte, a military official said.

In a telephone interview, 104th Brigade Commander Colonel Benoto de Leon said that the blast happened at around 2 a.m. in the vicinity of Barangay (village)Tingin-tingin, Kauswagan, Lanao del Norte.

De Leon said they have sent units from the explosives and ordnance unit of the military to investigate the incident but said that they have not identified any suspects and no motives have surfaced as of yet.

The components of the IED have also not yet been identified, De Leon said.

Despite the damage to the transmission tower, no power interruptions were reported, De Leon said.

He added that the town of Kauswagan was a good three-hour drive from where the abductors of the Irish priest Michael Sinnott were reportedly hiding.

The military said that the bandit group, identified by Interior and Local Government Secretary Reynaldo Puno as members of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s 113 Base Command, were reportedly in the boundaries of Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur provinces.

Nevertheless, De Leon said that although such bombing incidents were common in the area even prior to the abduction of Sinnott, the military was not discounting the possibility that the bombing incident might be a “diversionary tactic” of the bandit group.

“It is a possibility, pero [but] I don’t see its direct relevance no, lagi-lagi nang nangyayari ang pagpapasabog ng tower ditto [the bombing of towers here are a regular occurrence],” De Leon said.

He added that they would conduct security adjustments in the area of Lanao del Norte after the incident but clarified that they would not pull out troops on standby in case the crisis committee would give the green light to conduct military rescue operations for the abducted priest.

Sinnott was kidnapped October 11 from Pagadian City by an alleged group of pirates and was shortly turned over to another bandit group, the military said.

Love to see some progress are finally happening to Iligan these days.

Any news about the plan of the local government for the water crises solution in the city? There are still many baranggays that have no access to a potable water. Baranggay Tubod, for one, is a big baranggay having one of the most number of residents yet still a huge portion of it has no access to a potable water. It's ironic that Tubod has no access to a potable water when it's actually within the city proper and it's where the current mayor is actually residing. The water problem has always been the clamor of the people of Iligan yet very little solution has been done to address this so far. Let's just hope that our local officials would prioritize this as water is a very important component of life, and consequently, progress.

Finally, I'd like to ask who are running for mayor in Iligan. Are their candidates already?

I had a fantastic time visiting Iligan City again, visiting friends, meeting some new ones including more SSC-ILIGAN posters. While I am there, my Iliganon friends are my tour guides who always guide me to the places I want to visit. More times than not, I end up visiting people and places in Iligan that just seem to happen at a moments notice which add to the excitement and fun I enjoy.

For the rest of the year when I am not there in person, the SSC-Iligan posters are always my virtual tour guides with the pics and text items posted regularly. Thanks to all of you I can have a Virtual Visit to Iligan every day !

In many instances, some of the places and people I met, I informed them that I had first learned about them on SSC-Iligan. Many of them had not known of the existance of this website. They do now !

Unfortunately the time seemed to go by so quickly as it always does when having a good time. I have just returned home and am now dealing with the Jet Lag of traveling half way around the world but to visit Iligan again it is well worth it.

Thanks again to my Iliganon friends and posters here on SSC-Iligan.

regarding atong game sa PBA legends gabii..according to an insider, ang ilang kauban wala daw naglihuk og tarong sa marketing...tsk! tsk! gamay ra kaayo ang iyang info banners og halos walay flyers...then nag public system sila hapit na ang dula...wala man lang info kung kinsa ang manganhi.

I also heard that they were supposed to sleep the night in Iligan last night but didnt because the beds in our inns are too small for 6 footers and above persons. So, after the game, they went back to CdeO right away.

This is one loophole of our inns here in Iligan. They should provide bigger and longer beds to accomodate 6 feet and above persons.

^^In every event, marketing and advertisement plays a vital role to make it successful. Tama nga siguro kung ang strategy is not very good then expect na di rin gaanong maganda ang result. sana naman kung ano mang company ang mag sponsor ng event sa Iligan they have to make sure na it will be something memorable and lasting in every mind sa mga manonood, sa mga participants or guest naman they have to make sure na may maayos na facility like the one mentioned here is accommodation, siguro nga its about time na Iligan will improve more sa mga hotels and inns kasi somehow malaking tulong sa economy pag mataas ang occupancy rates ng mga hotels. I am looking forward that Iligan will soon have a 4 or 5 star hotel in the future.

Dont worry I will let you know pag may design na ang SM Iligan kasi karamihan ng project dumadaan dito sa office namin... yung sa mga lightings dito pinaprocess yan. pag meron i post ko dito.

While we're on the subject of great places to stay in in Iligan, I thought I would post some photos of Cheradel Suites where I stayed a couple of weeks ago. Iligan does need to have an excellent three-star, or at least a two-star, property and, while I am not convinced that Cheradel Suites fits the bill--I feel that they are over-priced and that you can get so much more for the same rates in other two-star or even budget hotels around the country--it is, so far, the only choice for standard accommodations in Iligan. It is lacking in so many ways in both facilities and services and, as if things couldn't be bad enough, the hotel has even stopped including free breakfasts with the rooms which makes it an even worse value.

Just as a caveat, steer clear of the rooms in the old (12 years old plus) wing. The rooms show their age (the shower heads are about to fall, the lamps are grounded and missing light bulbs). These rooms are also above the reception area and you can hear the staff chatting while on their night-shift. Shell out a few hundred pesos more to book the new rooms--the paisley prints and chintz fabric on the bed linen and the furniture will make you squirm but you do get the only bath-tubs offered by any hotel in Iligan City. The pool is smallish but is clean.

Cheradel Suites is located just off Brother Raymund Jeffrey St. in the Pala-o area across La Salle Academy. It is near the Quezon Avenue Extension traffic signal (where the Iligan branch of Land Bank is located). Their phone numbers are +63 63 223-8118, 223-8877 and 221-0500. Tariffs in the new wing starts at PHP 2,450 for twin rooms, room only.
Enjoy!

Filipinas Ozamis of Cokaliong Shipping Lines serving Cebu-Iligan via Ozamis..
seems like Iligan is now served as an extension route by ferry operators...

or how about a thought of flying out from Iligan's Ma.Cristina Airport with this:

this could be possible if not with the nonsense terrorist attacks near the vicinity of the airport.:)

use www.eradioportal.com and search under mindanao stations. best to listen from 6- 8 am iligan time for the latest news and political talk. Their late morning programming is not that good because of all these pseudo-medical programs selling supplements/medications for diabetes, etc.

thanks a lot! this link works smoothly!
only thing is I can't hear that 6-8am broadcast without getting up at 2am. :ohno:
