DOLE TO LAUNCH SPECIAL PROJECTS IN ILIGAN CITY

The DEPARTMENT OF LABOR AND EMPLOYMENT through its Regional Office No. 10 will launch three (3) of its special projects, namely the NEGO Kart (Negosyo sa Kariton), DOLE Kabuhayan Starter Kit, and Kabataan ITO on November 23, 2009 in Iligan City Public Plaza. The program will start at 9:00 AM with DOLE Undersecretary USEC Lourdes M. Trasmonte and Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz, gracing the event.

Twenty (20) Nego-Karts will be awarded to the selected beneficiaries from Iligan City. NEGO-KART (NEGOSYO SA KARITON) is a project for ambulant vendors in major cities of the country. The project will assist the ambulant vendors in making their existing livelihood undertakings grow into profitable and sustainable business; thus, making their income level at par with that of the minimum wage earners, at the least. Services include acquisition of vending cart, provision of working capital for procurement or production of marketable goods or services (raw materials and other inputs), trainings on production skills, entrepreneurship and business management, and assistance in acquiring business permit to operate in the designated area.

Fifty-two (52) DOLE Kabuhayan Starter Kits will also be awarded to the different skilled informal sector workers in Iligan City and in the Province of Lanao del Norte. The DOLE Kabuhayan (DK) Starter Kit Project is a livelihood formation strategy that is intended to bring about improved socio-economic well-being of workers in the informal economy, in groups/sectors with special concerns, and displaced wage workers (local and overseas) and their families. The Project consists of a package of services that will enable the target beneficiaries to start quickly a livelihood undertaking and become self-employed. It aims to engage them in sustainable self-employment through easy to learn livelihood undertakings such as simple house-to-house service-oriented skills (massage, plumbing, cosmetology, electrical servicing, welding, native snack preparation, car wash, motorcycle repair, cellular phone repair, appliance repair, upholstery repair, etc.), existing skills of beneficiaries acquired through formal training, and new skills that can be enhanced/improved through short-period training.

The Project will be implemented by LGUs and the private sector that will be accredited as co-partners (ACPs) or DOLE regional/field office through direct administration. TESDA and other government and private training institutions may be tapped to provide the trainings for identified priority skills.

DOLE will also be hiring 3,565 youth mentors for its Kabataan ITo special project to jumpstart a nationwide familiarization and appreciation sessions on information technology for Filipinos in the disadvantaged sectors.

At a ratio of one mentor to two students, twenty (20) youth mentors will be awarded with certificates during the launching.

The Kabataan ITo is a DOLE special project designed to teach young Filipinos knowledge and skills in basic information technology without joining the formal education system. The “teachers” or mentors in the project will be youth volunteers who are “IT-enabled” and the students are the disadvantaged and the informal sector. The mentors will teach an IT module consisting of a preparatory lesson on computer hardware familiarization, computer operation and MS Word processing application, and a final lesson on the use of the Internet for search and communication. The IT sessions will be for 22 hours.

The mentors, who will render “part-time” service of less than eight-hours a day or less than five days a week depending on the mentors’ availability, will be paid a stipend of P25.00 per mentoring hour. The budget of P15.02 million will come from the available budgets of the DOLE regional offices.

DOLE regional offices, in cooperation with the PESOs and working youth organizations will recruit the IT mentors who must be results-oriented, computer-adept, and friendly to the disadvantaged youth. They must also be meticulous keeping tab of the progress of the learners, as well as patient in mentoring.

Under a new brand name, “DOLE is More Than Jobs!” these special projects are just one of the services DOLE provides to boost its programs in promoting and preserving the employment of Filipino workers and help the economy sustain the modest growth it achieved despite the global crisis./// DOLE Region X

Si Varf okay. That's the general consensus among the people I've asked about his performance as a Congressman. Pero si Cruz, luslus niya. Walay nabuhat... walay agi. lukbak-lubak giyapon ang mga kalye. walay road widening nakita sa syudad. wala gyapon tubig in most parts of the city. walay nadugang na bridge. several bombings happened during his time... lisud duolan... even the very road that runs from the highway to his house in Donia Maria hasn't been fixed yet. The roads leading to city hall have been in really bad taste since he first stepped into office as a mayor yet nothing has been done to improve those in a slightest way possible, let alone fix those entirely. If he can't fix those of his own and those things he uses everyday, then he surely can't fix those things he doesn't own and doesn't see and use everyday.

kung modagan ni'g mayor si Varf, butar gyud ko'g samot ani although moangkon ko nga mas dako ang iyang matabang as congressman than as mayor. Pero if ever he graduates as a lone district congressman of Iligan, ending 3 terms, I am open to vote for him as mayor of Iligan.

Ang problema lang gyud ni Lawrence Cruz, buotan ra kaayo siya bisan atong mga tawo nga klaro na kaayong gaabusar sa iyang kamaayo. Kahinanglan gyud og "bato" nga kasingkasing ni Lawrence para mapatuman ang mga polisiya nga angay mapatuman. Sa pagkakaron lang, daghan mga policies niya ang wala masunod sa mga ubos nga buhatan sa atong LGU.

Pero kay lagi, si Lawrence wala man budget nga mopadaog niya sa mga niaging election, iya gyud amigohon ang angay amigohon. APil na adto ang mga tawong gigamit lang ang iyang maayong imahe og ang iyang pagkamaayo. Pwera na lang ka Varf nga nitabang sa iya kay dugay na man nato nasinati ang pagtabang ni Varf sa katawhan bisan pa atong Konsehal pa siya sa dakbayan, pero kaning uban nga naa sa iyang palibot, not necessarily nga naa sa SP, gigamit ra gyud siya.

Sama anang mga gahaman nga Department Heads nato...daghan nga mga POs dha sa mga opisina ang bloated kaayo ang presyo tapos gisakyan pa gyud sa BAC (bids and awards committee). Ako pa, nakawork na ko sa city government before, I personally saw how they waste city budgets to useless materials. Imagine, one time, I observed some offices order some PCs tapos kami sa among opisina, bisan na lang tawon bag-o nga motherboard kay nasunog na ang pentium 2 sa amo division sa una, dili gyud ka PO kay pugngan sa Department head...

Katong daan nga HRMO officer nga under investigation kay daghan unofficial overtimes, gihimong official...kanang mga LAKBAY ARAL kunohay nga laag laag lang diay....kana sila ang mga dagkong naggamit sa kaayo ni mayor. Kahinanglan mag inisog na ka mayor kay daghan hiwi sa atong LGU offices nga wala gyud maaksyoni.

i've been to Highway 30 last night and the establishment itself is nice..
the bar at the 2nd floor looks like Zinc Bar before..why? because what i've seen was the lights, the bar itself and the terrace..pare-pareha lang jud xa...but its nice naman!! i like it very much

Iliganon Boy, maayo kay naa kay direct contact sa imo uncle Varf. Pake congrats nalang niya sa mga nindot na iyang nabuhat sa atong lugar. :)

The people of Iligan admired your uncle Varf when he took out of his way and encouraged the local businessmen to grow by providing them easy assistance through his personal means. His personal initiatives to invite outside investments has been successful and the people in the district would eventually feel the positive outcome of his good actions in the next few months. But the people have admired him more for his courage and firmness when he fought against terrorism and for safeguarding the lives of his constituents against such diabolic undertakings of these cruel and ruthless criminals who don't believe in law of men, and God.

Relay our congratulatory message to him, and please inform him how appreciative his constituents are of his sincere service to his people.

As for your cousin, Lawrence Cruz, luslus niya! No offense meant to you, bai. But to be frank about this: not even his neighbors in Donia Maria like the way he manages our city. Sa kadugayon na niya as a city mayor, wala siyay nabuhat sa Tubod, Baraas and Tipanoy areas para ma improve. Sayang kay sa kalapad sa Tipanoy, it would have been a perfect host for city expansion kung gi-develop lang niya ang lugar. About 90% of these 3 areas ay walay tubig, lubak-lubak ang kalye, and therefore, wala ni progress. Sa kabibo sa Tubod, walay bangko na natukod. Therefore, there must be something wrong with those people who manage Tubod. Katong mga taga Tubod dinhi, huna-hunaa ninyo kung dapat pa ba iboto ninyo ang inyong baranggay captain. Murag gasabot na sila ni Cruz ug pahinayay ug lihok. :lol:

It is quite often said by those that reside in New York City and tourists from around the world " There is nothing like a " New York Pizza " . You can read one definition of New York Pizza at this link :

Recently however, two of my best Pizza Experiences did not happen in New York, but in Iligan City !

When the pre-opening pictures of Calda Pizza in Iligan first appeared here on SSC-Iligan a few months ago, I knew that would be one place I had to visit this year. Sure enough, a few days after my arrival I was at Calda Pizza in Pala-O. I just had to have one of those 36 inch Pizzas ! I contacted some of the Iligan SSC posters and friends in Iligan and agreed we would go there on a Saturday night.

This was truly an amazing experience for me as I had never had a Pizza that size right in front of me and it was something I had looked forward to for many months. It proved a great way to share an evening. Iligans biggest Pizza !

Another place I wanted to visit, first seen by me here on SSC- Iligan and pictured many times, " The Iliganon Resto-Bar. From my memory of the many pics I had seen of the place I had not noticed they too offer Pizza amoungst many more traditional items on the menu. I can not remember the name of the item I ordered, it was small strips of beef or steak with something like bread crumbs on it and a buttery, spicey kind of sauce to dip it in. It was excellent but I still had my eye on the Pizza menu and so did my friends. We finally decided to order a large Pizza just to give it a try.

As I finished my order of what I would call a traditional Filipino menu item, the Pizza we ordered was brought to our table. I sized it up and then asked my friends , how many slices do you think you want etc. I picked up the first slice, took one bite and then another. Without hesitation I said, " I think we better order another Pizza "

I hadn't experienced a better tasting, melt in your mouth, Pizza like this in decades !

I had a very pleasant conversation with the owner and explained that I had known about The Iliganon from viewing many pictures of it on SSC-Iligan. Almost immediately, a laptop computer appeared on the next table and I showed them SSC-Iligan as they had not known about it. You can be sure I'll be eating a lot of Pizza on my next visit !

Can Iligan City compete with New York City when it comes to Pizza ? It sure can !

sadly I wasn't able to get along with you and the SSC Iligan members due to time constrains..

and yeah, there's no other pizza like that whose size is larger from a typical fast food pizza's in the country (PizzaHut or YellowCab)... Only in Iligan City.. :)

Oh damn sure you're right, my friend! That's why let us continue to support the company as the taxes they pay will in turn help strengthen the economy of Iligan and the nearby towns. The company employs hundreds of people and if the company will vanish, the lives of these over a hundred Super 5 employees will go along with it.

I'm a frequent traveler to Iligan City and made it sure that i am going to ride on Super 5 buses. Back and forth here in CdO. What is a 10-peso difference in fare compared to what you get back in return if Super 5 Transport will not be around? I've already rode RTMI buses before when Super 5 was suspended. And heck that 150-peso one-way fare for an airconditioned bus of RTMI. I've been campaigning that logic again and again to my friends and "kakilalas", and those fellow passengers that sit beside me on my travel. Compare also their bus drivers to their rival, Super 5 drivers are friendlier than their rival. Makilala na nga ako ng employees nila sa terminal kahit sa face ko lang, most especially their dispatchers here in CdO. Hope they'll go a long, long way. Let's cement that legacy of Super 5 Transport to be the fiercest rival of RTMI. :)

Hope there will be, as Bachelor Express have been opposing some companies in competing them in that route.

Bob: I'm surprised you did like the pizza in Iliganon. You should have tried Greenwich pizza and compared it to Iliganon's. Iliganon's pizza is nothing near Greenwich in taste and price.

some, maybe most, well-meaning people, would like to think the credit for the Iligan-Bukidnon road belongs to Mr. Varf. perhaps, it would be better framed as: "The I-B road was constructed during Mr. Varf's term as Congressman." that is more accurate, considering that the I-B project was not his idea, nor did he have ANY part nor contribution in its conceptualization at all. this project (http://www.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=16294&Itemid=2) was started in 2002 (see link) yet. just so happens, it finally materializes during his term.
this is the same with the city's surveillance cams. these were conceptualized and bid out during FMQ's term, but finally was implemented during the incumbent mayor's term. in fact, many good projects the city is undertaking today has been in the city's development plan far earlier than the terms of the current mayor.
it is only right to place the credit on whom it is due, and make sure that nobody claims an accomplishment as his, when he had nothing to do with it.

Yes, you're right with what you just said but what really matters is under whos term did the IDEA materialize? I've heard about the Iligan-Bukidnon project as well as making Iligan a lone district during the term of Badelles but unfortunately he's only good at words and these were never implented under his nine-year term. :ohno:

Bob: I'm surprised you did like the pizza in Iliganon. You should have tried Greenwich pizza and compared it to Iliganon's. Iliganon's pizza is nothing near Greenwich in taste and price.

@ R M L I have been to several Greenwich Pizza locations. The one in Iligan and several in CDO. I agree their Pizza is good, especially for a fast food operation, and of course as being under the Jollibee Foods Corp. umbrella of great places to eat you don't think I would not have enjoyed Greenwich Pizza !

Enjoying lunch at Greenwich Pizza, SM Mall, CDO

Although franchise and chain operations ( especially those of " JFC " in The Philippines and elsewhere ) can put out great food, there are many things going for Independently owned and operated restaurants and eateries of all kinds. The majority of Independents all have their own unique originality and character and it is reflected in the appearance, ambience and in each individual item on the menu that is served. It is exactly these things that I enjoyed at Calda Pizza and The Iliganon.

Learning of places like this through pictures and information on the Internet many of them that interest me remain a place in my imagination until the time comes that I can actually experience them for myself. I may take a different viewpoint than those that are fortunate enough to go to these places almost any time they desire.

My experience at The Iliganon was a lot more than enjoying lunch and some fantastic tasting Pizza. A pleasant conversation with the owner, enjoying the decor of the place ( some of which I think I had seen right here on SSC-Iligan ) . When I mentioned how I had first heard of The Iliganon, seconds later a WiFi equipped laptop appears and I am showing the owner SSC-Iligan, something they were not aware of !

For a mid-afternoon lunch that I had originally thought would last about an hour, it went well beyond that and I enjoyed every minute of it. Now that's my kind of sightseeing !

Yes, you're right with what you just said but what really matters is under whos term did the IDEA materialize? I've heard about the Iligan-Bukidnon project as well as making Iligan a lone district during the term of Badelles but unfortunately he's only good at words and these were never implented under his nine-year term. :ohno:

I'm not making an alibi for the man, as I won't vote for him, either, but the sad thing about government is that it is like a giant snail, that can move only as fast as it's natural pace.
every good, developmental idea passes through congress and the senate before finally receiving the president's imprimatur and funding. and you know that the matter is first debated or at least discussed in each house. and before that, it has to be scheduled. and before it has to be scheduled, there should be no distractions. otherwise, it gets re-tabled, again and again, ad infinitum.
well, even if there were no distractions - and there were lots of them, mind you - our elected congressmen and senators love to be distracted. it seems to be a good stage for media mileage, and therefore, votes for the next term.
IMHO, we need to overhaul our political system and structure like a hole in the head.:ohno:

It's nice to see pictures of the Iligan-Bukidnon road posted here. But what you've seen is just a small portion of that long stretch (Iligan side only). There is no opening at the Bukidnon side yet considering that this project is already a decade old. :ohno:

Yeah, the last time I went there kay taman ra sa Brgy. Dodiongan ug Bonbonon ang sementado... but sa Rogongon road survey pa ila na himo with road length markings.. the fact pud na medyo kitid ug kurbada na kayo ang dalan didto tapos dili lalim ang cliffs didto labi na kung ga ulan2x.... :ohno:
Murag kailangan najud nag construction firm na expert sa lisod na terrain...

but the submarine bridge in Rogongon will be replaced soon with higher bridge.. bridge foundation pa akong last nakit-an didto gi himu.. :)

Manpower training center sa siyudad, girekomendar nga tukuron

Miduso og resolusyon si City Councilor Ariel Anghay atol sa regular session sa Sangguniang Panlungsod kagahapong adlawa aron paghangyo kang Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz nga tukuron dinhi sa siyudad ang usa ka manpower training center.

Naaghat ang Chairman sa Committee on Labor and Employment sa konseho paghimo sa maong lakang human madiskobre nga usa sa matag tulo kon two-thirds (2/3) sa mga aplikante sa matag jobs fair ang nangandoy lamang sa posisyong helper gumikan sa pagka-wala’y skill.

Matud ni Konsehal Anghay, nga sa pagkakaron, limitado lamang sa 90 ka mga trainees ang makagradwar sa matag batch diha sa training center sa Technical Education and Skills Development Authority kon TESDA nga nahimutang sa Barangay Ditucalan. Ingon man usab, tulo lamang ka kurso ang gitanyag niini sa pagkakaron sama sa electricity, automotive ug welding.

Gisugyot sa maong resolusyon ni Konsehal Anghay nga itanyag sa pagatukuron unya nga Iligan City Manpower Training Center ang mga skills nga in-demand karon sa sulod ug gawas sa nasud sama sa pipefitting, plumbing, heavy equipment operation, dressmaking gamit ang high-speed sewing machine ug uban pa.

YES. you're right. ang pinaguusapan kasi yung gaano kabilis namaterialized yung project na eto. We, us an ordinary people, we dont know what was going on that project...kng kelan pa ba yan at kanino ba yan..di ba...pag na materialiezd na saka tayo bibilib sa project at kanino ba yan..

Ang sa akin din, mas maayos pa ang approach ni Varf kasi walang pride siya kung mag implement ng project na ito knowing na si Tikbong Badelles ang nagsimula. Dahil kung ang ibang tao ang nasa upuan ni Varf at kalaban sa pulitika ang nag start ng isang project, di ito papansinin at gagawa na lang ng ibang project na siya talaga ang nagsimula. Pero kakaiba itong si Varf, walang pride at talagang ang trabaho niya ang pinasasalita niya. Di gaya nung sa panahon ni Tikbong Badelles na puro na lang salita sa radyo na kesyo ito na daw ang Iligan-Bukidnon Road, tapos ang Iligan Lone districting eh makakaapekto daw sa socio-economic aspect ng Iligan at Lanao.

Tapos ngayon, eto na siya, magpapapili na para mayorship? OMG, kahit saan ka magpunta ngayon merong mukha ni TIkbong Badelles na nakasaad na siya ang project implementor ng mga iyon, Mr. Performance kuno... hay naku ang trapo talaga, alam na yang mga aksyon mo! LOL

Iligan City Solid Waste Management System

PROJECT SITE / LOCATION:
The Central Material Recovery and Composting Facility (or CMRCF) is located at Sitio Bangko, Barangay Bonbonon, Iligan City with a land area of 12.27 hectares. Only 5 hectares will be used for the CMRCF. The facility will be operated by the City Government.

PROJECT COMPONENTS:
The solid waste management system is composed of two major components; the infrastructure development and the institutionalization program.

The infrastructure development is composed of site development, access road development, and the construction of the following buildings; namely, materials recovery and composting facility, special waste and hazardous facility, administration building, warehouses, guardhouse, motorpool, and agri-demo farm. Closure and rehabilitation of the existing dumpsite is part of the infra development.

The institutionalization program aims to strengthen the Iligan City Solid Waste Management Board and the 28 coastal and the host Barangay Solid Waste Management Committees. It includes institutionalizing the ICSWM-Project Management Office. The program includes providing alternative livelihood to affected families of Brgy Santiago and Brgy Bonbonon; recycling projects; information, education and communication campaign; strengthening the existing garbage collection fleet; and policy advocacy. Implementation of the project includes city-wide and barangay-based activities.

PURPOSE / OBJECTIVE:
The purpose of the project is to establish a financially viable and environmentally sustainable solid waste management system to benefit the people of Iligan City, to be operated within the carrying capacity of the supporting ecosystem, and at the same time satisfy the requirements of intergenerational equity and social justice.

TARGET BENEFICIARIES:
resent and future residents of Iligan City and neighboring areas.

Actually, gamay ra nga porsyento ang aspaltado @reg. Pero we are optimistic nga ma-aspalto ra ang halos tanan major roads once naa na gyuy kaugalingon nga representative ang Iligan sa congresso. Lone district na man ang Iligan so mas matagaan na ug pagtagad sa sunod. :)

Ganun?! may namatay na...so ibig sabihin malaki talaga ang tubig at malakas jan sa mandulog... Nd ba umabot sa mga kabahayan kasi yung parents ko jan nakatira malapit sa bridge yung may sea oil na gasoline station sa harap lang...ang pagkakaalam ko palaging bumabaha jan eh. can any body post pictures of that para naman malaman namin ang situation jan.tnx.

Iligan’s P495 M Water Project Groundbreaking

Mayor Lawrence Lluch Cruz and Congressman Vicente “Varf” Belmonte, Jr., representative of the First District of Iligan City and Lanao del Norte led the groundbreaking ceremonies for the 495 Million Peso Water Supply Expansion Project held November 21 at Sitio Abaga (upper portion of Barangays Suarez and Upper Tominobo).

Along with the two top officials were city council members Moises Dalisay, Jr. (Chairman of the Committee on Water), Voltaire Rovira, Chonilo Ruiz, Simplicio Larrazabal III, Ariel Anghay and Sangguniang Kabataan Federation President Erika Rae Cruz.

The project aims to provide adequate potable water supply to 38 coastal barangays which comprised 86% of Iligan City. The other 6 barangays (comprising the 14%) are not yet covered by the water expansion project because of its proximity from the system’s source.

According to Engr. Wilfredo Bacareza, Manager of the Project Implementation Unit (PIU), the project will sufficiently supply water demand for the next 15 years. This includes the water demand projections for residential, institutional, commercial and industrial connections.

The project component includes the construction of an intake dam similar to the existing intake structure at Ditucalan water source. The water sources at Abaga area will be delivered to the consumers through this intake via the main transmission (24-inch to 16-inch) pipeline along the national highway up to Barangay Dalipuga.

The project is expected to be completed in the next 14 months after the date of the groundbreaking.

In his message during the occasion, Mayor Cruz admitted delay in the implementation of the project which he considers the flagship project under his administration. However, he explained that the delay was brought about by the negotiations of the Road Right-of-Way (RROW) and the competitive bidding process that was greatly affected by the soaring global price escalation of fuel and construction materials.

The local chief executive assures the public that the implementation will not be hampered by the election ban as the local poll is approaching. He said that the project has been long-planned prior to the upcoming political exercise. Moreover, Eden Japitana, the department manager of Land Bank’s loan services, revealed that his office already wrote the Commission on Elections to seek for the exemption of the project from the ban.

The Iligan City Government has entered a loan agreement with World Bank through Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP) under the Support for Strategic Local Development Investment Project (S2LDIP). Under the loan agreement entered into by LBP and the City of Iligan dated February 22, 2007, the city sub-loaned the amount of P445.5 Million for project. The city put up equity of not less than P50 Million. The loan will be payable in 15 years with a grace period of 3 years on principal payment. ///cio/mta

Mipalit ko ug JVC tv remote control sa Unitop Ozamiz last week nga tag P69. pero dili mo-function ang chaneel 1-10. channel 11-13 ra hehe. Wala man gud sila JVC TV para ma-testing. ang ila testingan kay AM radio ra. Kung mo-static, it means mo-function ang key sa remote control ngeek huhuhu. A busy road in Iligan - a typical scenario during 4pm rush hour. The road clogs up even more when the clock hits 5pm and stays that way for an hour or two. Iligan roads are small with many intersections. Maybe some of these roads are better off converted to walk-ways and parking spaces similar to what they have in Eastern Europe. It would push the locals and shoppers alike to walk rather than ride on jeepneys or private cars. It makes us healthier too.

A picture of what they call a multicab (am i correct?) commonly used by local businessmen for deliveries and such. This is a very economical vehicle for transport purposes as it has a small engine (3k) and therefore does not consume gasoline as much as a regular pinoy-jeepney does.

I hope the next step of our rep is to help in the separation of IIT from MSU.

I understand that the child (MSU - IIT) has outgrown its parent (MSU - Main)..that reason alone can be argued in favor of separation... (I have entertained that idea before)

But I think IIT should (IMHO) remain with MSU in order still to uphold its mandate of quality education for Muslims and other cultural groups...

once mag separate na ang IIT, it would become a semi - private institution (I guess) and together with that is a corresponding increase of tuition fees that would leave our less - fortunate folks especially along the area rather more unfortunate because they could not afford such increase!

(You can enlighten me with this issue) and I'm willing to lend an ear!

I understand that the child (MSU - IIT) has outgrown its parent (MSU - Main)..that reason alone can be argued in favor of separation... (I have entertained that idea before)

But I think IIT should (IMHO) remain with MSU in order still to uphold its mandate of quality education for Muslims and other cultural groups...

once mag separate na ang IIT, it would become a semi - private institution (I guess) and together with that is a corresponding increase of tuition fees that would leave our less - fortunate folks especially along the area rather more unfortunate because they could not afford such increase!

(You can enlighten me with this issue) and I'm willing to lend an ear!

As an IITian myself, I guess I am also entitled to my opinion regarding MSU IIT's separation from the MSU System.

In the previous years wherein IIT was attempted to be separated from MSU,a lot of people speculated that IIT would become a semi-private institution--that is, according to the administration and staff of MSU IIT who are not willing to give their posts once the separation materializes. For the people who have a lot of families working in the institution either as staff or support regular employees, this would mean an end to their stronghold in IIT. BUT, they are only thinking for the good of themselves and not for the institution. For us who have love for IIT, we opt more for its growth as an institution--a growth that should have been bigger than it currently has. As an institution that offers quality education and quality graduates, it is high time that IIT be given its own freedom: to be bigger, and better; if not the best. And, being under the shadows of the MSU system, it will always be second priority.

I have been in IIT for years and I have seen how corrupt some people who work at the admin. On enrollment days, one would really see a display of how true to their work these employees are. A staff would just roam around the campus when she is needed the most--when her signature is needed by the hundred meter long queue line at the registrar's office.

IIT has been bearing the light of the whole MSU system seeking for the excellence in education. BUT, has MSU given IIT what it deserves? For all these years, IIT has been lacking in funds and facilities. Even for academic courses, the main campus controls mostly of what is only for IIT and offers more to itself as a main campus. IIT has always and only been "extensions" of several courses. They do not want IIT to grow into a more brilliant institution with the likes of Silliman or UP. It is because they dont want their pride to sink further.

I support the clamor for its separation from MSU so that the MSU Main Campus will be able to do support its own--apart from the excellence that IIT is doing for the whole MSU system, so that MSU Main will be able to realize its gaps and its lacks and that IIT will also be able to realize what it lacks and what it needs.

This, as what I see, is best for both campuses. I hope this time, the admin of IIT will not blind the students again for their claims of the implications of IIT's separation. Coz in the past, they have completely blinded the freshmen and sophomores from the truth by telling them that they could no longer enjoy the cheapest per unit fees which is a complete lie.

they can omit the word, "State" in the proposed name - it makes the university name cheap. I'm not sure how does that appeal to you or some people, but in other countries, the inclusion of the word "State" to university means a low-grade, 3rd-class academic institution.

I like the ISUT name much, much more than the ISUST's. Iligan University of Science and Technology sounds like Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine or Nanyang Technological University or Massachusetts Institute of Technolgy, etc...:)

I'm glad you guys are expressing your ideas with respect to the matter and I believe that we are all entitled to our opinions. Now with regards to the separation, I was actually able to get a hand on the proposed bill that would separate IIT from MSU back then (although I lost it and its somewhere in my house). Basically IIT would have the same benefits as it enjoyed under MSU in terms of a separate budget which it receives directly from the national budget and not from DepEd or CHED (so far only two universities in the Philippines enjoy this: the UP and MSU system), if approved IIT would be the third. Basically the only difference that the separation would cause would be the name change, I forgot the proposed name, it was ISUST (Iligan State-U of Science and Tech) I think or something.

But basically for IIT to grow at an even higher level and establish itself as one of the best institutions in the Philippines, it really needs to separate from MSU. Unfortunately, IIT is at the mercy of the bureaucracy brought about by MSU main. Take the newly established College of Nursing in IIT. It has already been a long dream for IIT to offer Nursing, but it was held back because it required the approval from MSU and it was being denied because MSU already offered Nursing. It was only till recently that IIT was able to offer BS Nursing. Apart from that even though among all the MSU campuses, IIT is the most productive, the allocation and distribution of the budget is also controlled by MSU and basically IIT is deprived of the much needed funds.

But anyways as soon as I can get a copy of the bill I will try and post it here.

Hi Fahdingding. I'm not really an expert on this issue and I'm not an IIT student nor am I an alumnus, but allow me to cast my opinion on this as this also concerns me being an Iliganon.

I also think that IIT would improve more if it is separated from the MSU System. To separate IIT from MSU does not mean that IIT budget would decrease. In most likelihood, it would stay the same. But because the set-up becomes less bureaucratic...the budget allocation would no longer have to pass through several departments, thus lesser people are involved until the budget is spent for its right intention and purposes. At the current set-up, it's quite hard to get funding from the mother university (main campus) and the institution (IIT) does not have endowment fund for its own instructional expenses. So, as long as scholarships are provided to deserving students, the standard of IIT would remain high.

As it stands, I think IIT is doing okay. But I think it's far from being an ideal institution of higher learning. Its research output is still dismal. Its facilities need massive maintenance. But the most concern that IIT needs to address seriously and immediately is the construction of the institution's own student housing to accommodate their students many of which aren't Iliganons.

I also have a great respect for MSU Main as their graduates are as academically competent as IIT's. I haven't been to Marawi, and given the current peace and order situation I don't think it would be a good idea for anyone to go there.

When I was in HS, I had this wish that MSU was located somewhere peaceful so I can study there for a full-ride. :D

MANILA, Philippines—The state-run Saudi fund for Development may provide as much as $1.3 billion in cheap financing to fund the government’s planned construction of a railway system through parts of Mindanao deemed vital to the economy.

The Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) said officials were currently looking for concessional loans from several sources to fund the Mindanao Railway System, listed as one of the Arroyo administration’s priority projects.

“One possible party is the Saudi Fund for Development. They’ve expressed willingness [to finance] this project,” DOTC Undersecretary Guiling Mamondiong said in a recent interview.

The official said the estimated cost to build the Mindanao railway project’s first phase, which will pass through the Cagayan de Oro-Iligan industrial corridor, was raised to $1.3 billion from the previous $800 million to $1 billion due to changes to include more municipalities.

“There was some realignment of the railway in our studies. Four municipalities—one in Lanao del Norte and three in Misamis Oriental—were included,” Mamondiong said. “The project will now be 124 kilometers long from the 120 kilometers originally planned,” he said.

“This will be good for their local economies,” he added.

The government earlier approached lenders from Poland and Spain for help in financing the railway’s construction, but the Saudi Fund had emerged as the most likely funding source.

“They’re just awaiting the Neda’s [National Economic Development Authority] approval of the feasibility study for the project’s phase one, so there’s a possibility that they will fund the entire project if they are willing,” Mamondiong said.

Once the feasibility study for the project has been approved by the Neda and construction is given the green light, Mamondiong said the railway would likely be operational in five years time.

He said the transportation agency has also approached lenders from Japan and South Korea for the possibility of multilateral financing for the single project.

The railway system aims to link two vital Mindanao gateways, Mamondiong said. These are the Laguindingan International Airport and the Mindanao Container Terminal. It will have passenger and cargo operations.

Discussions for the succeeding phases for the entire railway system have not yet taken off, the DOTC official said.

The Cagayan de Oro-Iligan route is being prioritized since the covered stretch is an industrial gateway and a key trade center for the southern Philippines island
group.

The planned Mindanao railway is made up of a network of lines linking Cagayan de Oro to Iligan, Iligan to Zamboanga City, and Cagayan de Oro to Agusan and Surigao, as well as extensions to Davao and General Santos cities.

The plan for the railway started with former President Fidel V. Ramos. It was revived by his successor Joseph Estrada, but the project failed to take off.

hi uonno. maganda ang lighting na ginamit - first-class din lahat galing Italy. even the water cosset is first-class. the floor tiles are also very nice. the kitchen sink, the lavatory, the water fixtures are all first class. But what struck me the most are the lighting - contemporary, sleek, dainty, and I bet, expensive. The location is just right across Kimberly Building and beside Kingsway Hotel/Inn.

The inception to establish a fine resto was part of the hotel's expansion program as the bookings of the hotel have increased considerably since it was opened, and many of the hotel's guests are foreigners looking for resto that serve international cuisine.

@ RML Thanks so much for those pictures of Jollibee, Tibanga at Christmas Time. It's hard to believe just a few weeks ago I was sitting right there looking out the windows while enjoying some Jolliburgers and other delights available there. I'll never forget the first pictures I saw of Jollibee, Tibanga here on SSC-Iligan and thinking to myself " I wonder what it would be like sitting in that place, eating some burgers and looking out the windows at the Jeepneys, Tricicads and other forms of traffic unknown here where I live. Just goes to show you that dreams can come true !

Once again, I brought back some nice souveniers from Jollibee, Tibanga including some Jolli-Pens and zippered carry pouches. An inscription on the pen case reads:

It means: A decade (10 years) of gratitude to the people of Iligan.

Several times on my most recent visit, I went there late in the evening with some friends for a Jolli-Sundae. One evening I was sitting there and one of the employees begins washing the windows on the front of the building. I never saw anyone window washing at that hour of the night and I sat there thinking why. I finally reasoned that possibly because of the heat and bright sunlight during the day, it would dry the soapy water too fast leaving obnoxious looking streaks on the glass. I think the reason why they do the cleaning in the evening is because there's an observable lesser traffic in the store as that's supposed to be wee hours, and also, so that the crew can avoid from getting exposed to the scorching heat of the sun.

If you're saying it's not a regular occurrence at Jollibee cleaning the windows late at night and yet they've it done with you around, then the management must have been compelled to do it because they don't want to play host to one of their most precious customers - a noble person who came half the globe away - with the place that look short from being decent and clean. :)
