Lanao Norte gears up for Sinulog 2010

Iligan City (5 January) -- In a bid to finally capture the elusive championship in the biggest cultural stage of the Philippines-Cebu's Sinulog Festival, the provincial government of Lanao del Norte is again sending its own contingent in the much anticipated cultural competition.

"This is the fulfillment to our promise to last year's winning group in the Municipal Festival contest during our Golden Araw Anniversary. And with their spectacular win, we are sending this year the Kapatagan National High School to the Sinulog to be our contingent," explained Governor Khalid Dimaporo.

This is the second time that the provincial government is sending an official contingent in the Free Interpretation category where Lanao del Norte placed 4th over-all in a category that saw 25 groups compete.

Last year, Lanao del Norte was also able to grab the coveted title of Best in Costume despite being a first-timer in the festival.

"We are very thankful for the all-out support of Governor Dimaporo. We are inspired to reach for the top prize this time and bring home the trophy here in Lanao del Norte," said Tourism Officer Minda Regis.

This year, the province's Sinulog contingent is composed of 95 dancers, 50 propsmen, 30 instrumentalists and 24 support group personnel. Lanao del Norte will also be sending 2 candidates in the prestigious Sinulog Queen Pageant, namely Emilyn Opada of Maranding, Lala and Lota Correos of Tubod.

"This is another chance for us to showcase to the whole world that Lanao del Norte is indeed a beautiful and peaceful province where people live in unity and harmony with one another," said Information Officer Lyndon Calica.

The Lanao Norte group will depart for Cebu on January 12 for early rehearsals, while the actual Sinulog competitions will be on January 17. (VNL/PIO-Lanao del Norte)

MANILA, Jan. 6 (PNA) -- In support with the government's efforts in promoting peace and development in Mindanao Region, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Contract Package 6 Project or the Replacement/Retrofitting of 24 bridges along Iligan-Aurora Road in Lanao Del Norte.

A report to DPWH Secretary Victor Domingo by DPWH-ADB Project Management Office Director Estrella Villar said for 2009, they had completed the components of Contract Package 6 of the 6th ADB Road Improvement Project.

"With the completion of the project, it will now ensure the linkages between municipalities served by these bridges and enhance the agricultural trade and immediate delivery of government services thus provides a reliable road network connecting Northern and Western Mindanao," Villar said.

Villar added the project will also boost the aqua-culture and food processing industry in Northern Mindanao as the Iligan-Aurora Road connects to the mass transportation operation industry in Zamboanga Peninsula.

The project involves the replacement of seven bridges namely: Mago-Ong, Liangan, Kolambogan, Raw-An, Sagadan, Muntan and Kabasagan, and the retrofitting of 17 bridges namely Linamon, Rebucon, Larapan, Kawit, Barongisan, Barogohan, maigo, Segapod, Kulasihan, Caromatan, Manga I, Bulod, Maranding, Quidalos, Butadon, Balili, and Titunod.

This P234.6-million bridge replacement and retrofitting project is jointly funded by the Government of the Philippines and the Asian Development Bank.(PNA)

Mr. Mendoza, meanwhile, said the new Laguindingan airport in Cagayan de Oro would be opened in the third quarter of the year.

"We are aiming for a third quarter open[ing] for the airport and we expect that traffic to that airport would be at 1.5 million to two million passengers. The new airport is developed already and the terminal is currently being built," he said.

The Laguindingan airport will be an international airport while the Bacolod-Silay airport will service mostly domestic flights. -- ENJD

And to think that the world is slowly emerging from the world economic crisis and this airport opens and the halted would be industries in Northern Mindanao would start constructing their complex, the 1.5 million to 2 million annual passengers would bloat to at most 2.5 m or 3 m annually.

And that is a very big factor considering that the city is not that recognized, by that it will become the next or the up coming best destination in the northern mindanao and hopefully the shopping and leisure center. I just hope that whoever the next President will continue what the former administration did to our city.

Upon entering The Philippines at Manila when presenting my passport to Immagration and Passport Control officers, I have always been asked " Where in The Philippines are you going " .

First of all, for those not familiar with International Travel, the last thing you ever want to do is to " wise off " ( be rude ) or otherwise play games with Imigration and Customs in a foriegn country or for that matter, even your own country upon your return.

On my last visit, when the Filipina Immigration officer asked where I was going, I politely replied " Iligan City ". All of a sudden she appeared to me to have a strange look on her face and then in what sounded to me as a rather strange tone of voice she commented " and WHY are YOU going to Iligan City ! " .

From previous experience, I came well prepared for a situation like this and politely replied " I have friends in Iligan City ", and with that I reached into my carry bag as I commented " And I also have a letter of invitation from Iligan City Hall office of Mayor Cruz to come and visit " . With that I handed the officer the original letter enclosed in its original postal envelope ( loaded with Philippine postage stamps and postmark ) .

With that, the officer then began consulting with the officer next to her. I then commented to her about my affiliation with MSU-IIT and produced documentation confirming that and handed it to her. The officer looked at that and continued consulting with the officer next to her.

At this point in time I am thinking to myself " Are we having a problem here ? " but I knew better than to open my mouth and say anything, you have to learn to keep your cool in a situation like this.

After a few minutes the officer returns my documents to me, stamps my passport and returns it to me and says , " the reason we are asking is that we are from Iligan City. She then gave me her card and said " if you have any difficulty or problem at all please do not hesitate to call us right away, and wished me a pleasant time while visiting.

On the visit prior to this last one, I was also questioned by an Immigration Officer why I was going to Iligan City and that officer also said he was from Iligan. I wonder if I said I was going to Cebu if they would do the same routine but say they are from Cebu ? Who knows.

In my own mind however, what I really felt like saying when asked why am I going to Iligan City, was, " Why would I want to go to any place else ? "

The city would need to reinvent itself first before other significant developments will follow. As a start, we are already starting the water expansion/development project which is vital to commercial / real estate developers. But there are lots of other things that the city needs to develop:

1. (FOR ACCOMMODATION OF FUTURE INDUSTRIES) reinventing commerce and trade of the city
2. (FOR ACCOMMODATION OF FUTURE INDUSTRIES) reviewing its city planning to accommodate more industries
3. (FOR ACCOMMODATION OF FUTURE INDUSTRIES) new areas as future CBDs (they had this planned but still in the planning stage they haven't done some significant pre-requisites to realize a growth area for CBDs)

4. (FOR INDUSTRIES) Upgrading/Acquiring necessary infrastructures for easy industrial logistics.

5. (FOR FUTURE JOB GENERATION) searching and developing for areas so that other light/medium industries will be able to locate.

6. (ANALYZING TAX PERKS AND INCENTIVES) re-designing existing tax ordinances other ordinances for up and coming commercial / industrial
locators.

After those are equally done, then, we can realize more developments for the city in the future. For now, I dont see that happening. But hopefully, our city mayor, for his last term, will be able to realize these things.

Shopping malls and other commercial entities entail consumer spending and market base so that they will be sure of their profit in the city. Let us start with hosting light to medium industries so our graduates will be able to find jobs and our existing population will be able to uplift their purchasing power. But before industry hosting, make sure POWER and other industrial pre-requisites are met.

These are some of the many things that Iligan needs to do.

Haaay, parehas jud tag gihuna-huna TONZI. It all starts in the consumers' pockets.
No job means no money, no money mean no buying power.
It's ok to encourage every citizen to engage in business but we cannot deny the fact that most people are not gifted in business. A huge percentage of the population are professionals and skilled workers. And besides, how would businesses thrive if the target consumers do not have the sufficient buying power?
One lesson learned is from the closure of the NSC. Businesses in the city experienced a decline in profit because most of their target consumers had lost their buying power they once had before the closure of the city's largest plant.
The people's pockets should be the first priority of the local government. It must encourage more local or foreign investors to open industries in city. This will start a chain reaction of economic progress.

^^ You're right. Opposing to what we think as the most agreeable idea, our officials often think of "job generation" as jobs that the LGU gives.

To think of it, most of those contractual employees are even working without an assurance that they get paid and re-hired after their term ends. Our city officials are working like snails in looking for ways to generate jobs in the city. They have not fully utilized some areas of the city that are feasible for industry hosting. They should act now. They are calling for IT/BPO industry and yet they haven't applied for any PEZA area in the city where IT and other light to medium industries can locate. They havent tapped our TELCOS if their capacities are okay for IT industries to use. There lots and lots of stones left unturned by our officials. And now, since elections are coming, they are even more slow because they are getting ready for their political parties and affinity planning.

na.curious lng ko ani nga problem dri sa iligan..everytime na musakay kog p.u/taxi kay dili cla mugamit ug meter..70 dayon ipabayad bsag duol ra kaayong market to tambo..mao kuno na ilang plug down rate..sa cdo gni bulua terminal to divisoria 75 ra sa taxi..nya to think literally mas layo pa ang bulua-divisoria kaysa palao-tambo..ang tambo terminal pud gni to our house near the terminal i think for about 1km lng yata,50 na dayon ang bayad..hmmm..i wonder why LTFRB are not clarifying this kind of system to p.u's/taxi's here in iligan...one time nisakay kog taxi "w/meter" few days ago sa iligan,niingon ko sa driver na i.on na ang meter then he replied dli na..hahay..maong hinay ang pag.lambo sa katawhan kay walay panginlabot sa mga rules & regulations..another thing,nagdahom ta nga daghang muanhi satong syudad,nya ing.ana ang patakaran sa mga taxi drivers?mangwartaay kaayo...we should be aware of this iliganons..

if gusto jud ka makatipid, sakay ug taxi instead of PU. if dli i-on ang meter kanaog or perhaps ayaw bayari. if the meter is not on then the trip is free. if i were you mangita kog suki nga taxi driver and get his number. or you can call famous taxi and diamond taxi.

it also happened to me, when i went home for a surprise vacation. wala jud ko patagbo kay wla man ko sulti mo uli ko. the PU driver charge me 150 pesos for a trip from pier to pala-o. hahay.. nibayad nlng intawon ko. para walay gubot.. :ohno:

if gusto jud ka makatipid, sakay ug taxi instead of PU. if dli i-on ang meter kanaog or perhaps ayaw bayari. if the meter is not on then the trip is free. if i were you mangita kog suki nga taxi driver and get his number. or you can call famous taxi and diamond taxi.

it also happened to me, when i went home for a surprise vacation. wala jud ko patagbo kay wla man ko sulti mo uli ko. the PU driver charge me 150 pesos for a trip from pier to pala-o. hahay.. nibayad nlng intawon ko. para walay gubot.. :ohno:

im hoping that this problem would come to an end...kung knsay naay kaila sa LTRB,hinaut nga masulosyonan ning sayop nga sistema..kung kita lng mangitag alternatives para ani nga problema,dili makakat.on ang mga abusadong drivers sa iligan..LTFRB ra ang makapk.gang ani nga problema..

My advise is sakay og taxi nga operational ang meter. Ayaw jud sugot kung dili i-on. And then, kung pwede, ayaw pa-aircon og pa-stereo para hinay ang dagan sa meter. Pakigsabot sa daan adeser mosakay. Ayaw nang sakay daan adeser magsabot kay daghan maningingilad karon. Mao nay kasagaraang sakit sa mga PU drivers. Busa, sa taxi ka. And ayaw pud kalimot isumbong nang mga marama nga taxi or PU drivers. Timan-i ang plate no.

YEZ! its bawal talaga yan. Abusado lang mga iyan kasi wal pang nag report sa kanila. Isang solution jan, sumakay kayo tapos sabihin nyo na meter, pag hindi gagamitin nyong meter cge pagamit nyo yung standard nila tapos sabihin nyo na sa LTFRB kayo baba at apag dating dun ireport nyo agad ng mahuli agad.hehehe

Just imagine when we arrived at IBJT North from CdeO at 2 am, they would charge us 200 to the city...:bash: Good thing another good natured driver had us at 70 pesos (also unmetered) to the city. It's a bit lower but the fact that they're still not using taxi meters makes me feel so angry. :bash:

naa man mo dra sa iligan you should do something about it. like what i did 6 years ago. sinumbong ko ang LTO sa head office nila sa Manila eh di inaksyonan agad. Pinadalan ng letter ang CDO galing Manila then Sinabon ng Regional Director ang Iligan Office. I think it was the late Mr. Datumanong who was then in charge of the licenses.

My complaint was my plastic card license was not released 3 years na ang nilabay and one employee there is always chatting (MIRC) while on duty.

After sila pinagalitan ng Regional office binigay nila yung card ko but sad thing is expired na nung natanggap ko. So i have to renew. But this time 1 hour lang. Dapat din sisihin ang kinauukulan hindi lang ang mga drivers. Baka ka kunchaba nila ang mga yan.

Picturan nyo ang meter na hindi naka on or make a video and send it to youtube este LTFRB head office.

Siguro kung isumbong ang mga taxi sa Iigan sa LTFRB wa gihapoy pulos. Ang maayo ani ang local government ang magmonitor inaayudahan sa LTFRB.

Peter Po has rented the whole building right after its completion. I really don't know the real story behind the closure and how Metrobank has acquired the property and bought back by the original owner. I also gathered that the building will undergo another renovation before reopening.

Troops implement gun ban in Iligan

ILIGAN CITY -- The 43rd Infantry Battalion (IB) of the Philippine Army has started implementing and intensifying the gun ban since Sunday in every checkpoint in this city.

The implementation is carried out despite the absence of orders from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) office in Iligan City, said Colonel Juvy Max Uy, 43rd IB commander.

"The Comelec has yet to call a security coordination meeting. But even before the start of gun ban implementation, we have been implementing the mandate in accordance with the law to maintain peace and order within our area of responsibility," the military official said.

Prior to the gun ban implementation Sunday, Uy said the military noticed that politicians from the Lanao areas were accompanied by "overwhelming security backup" as they enter Iligan City.

"We will not hesitate to hold any person or group of persons bringing firearms without proper identity and authority," he said. "This will include military and police from other places who may be having a leave or on break."

Lawyer Anna Liza Barredo, Iligan City Comelec supervisor, said a security command center will be established at Philippine National Police (PNP) headquarters in Camp Tomas Cabili in Barangay Tipanoy to ensure coordination among security forces in implementing the gun ban.

"We already had a command conference in Cagayan de Oro City last Friday, but there is a need to meet the AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) and PNP commanders for a conference in Iligan City to fine-tune the implementation of guidelines of the gun ban," said Barredo said.

The AFP and PNP were directed earlier to dismantle private armies nationwide before the May elections following the Ampatuan, Maguindanao massacre, which killed 57 civilians, including 31 journalists. (Richel V. Umel)

The City Government of Iligan through its Iligan Investments and Promotion Center (IIPC) in cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry – Lanao del Norte Provincial Office recently conducted the7th Business Forum at Ritza’s Garden “N” Party Place, St. Mary, Tibanga, Iligan City with the theme “Northern Mindanao Economic Outlook for 2010”. Forty-seven (47) people from the cross-section of the city’s economy such as businessmen (MSMEs), business managers / professionals, representatives from the local government unit and national government agencies, business chambers, private sector organizations, non-government organizations and academe attended the said activity.

Iligan Chamber (CCIFII) President, Mr. Sim Quina graced the occasion to welcome the attendees. He declared based on his observations that businesses in Iligan are doing well despite difficult events that happened within the year. He noted that those catering to basic needs are flourishing because people consume. The establishment of Gaisano Mall in Iligan showed that business in Iligan City is a proof to his claim. However, other similar smaller establishments had been affected in term of sales. He also emphasized that there is less earnings on tourism-related establishments because we do not have very few tourists in the city.

As President of the Iligan Chamber, he stressed the following as insights for 2010:

· TOURISM INDUSTRY DEVELOPMENT:

We need to strengthen the tourism industry in Iligan City. This industry has not been given enough attention and focus in the past. There is no influx of tourist in the city. The further development of the tourism industry can help boosts the economy of Iligan City;

· INVESTMENTS PROMOTION:

We also need to do aggressive investment promotion for the City of Iligan. This activity needs full support from the local government especially funding in the promotion and marketing aspects.

· IMPROVEMENT OF THE IMAGE PROBLEM:

The problem of Iligan is not the “bombing” but the problem on impression ( perception on the peace and order environment in the city). We need to come up with actions on how to counter this wrong impression. It is the biggest obstacle to the progress of the city. To get tourist to come to Iligan City, we need to counter this impression.

· MARKET VOLUME:

We may not have the airport in Iligan City but we have the passengers (volume). He cited his experience in Ilo-ilo City where it has one of the biggest airport but with very few passengers.

The resource person DTI-10 Assistant Regional Director Linda O. Boniao presented the Northern Mindanao Economic Outlook for 2010. She discussed that Northern Mindanao or Region 10 is the fastest growing region nationwide in terms of investments, employment and exports where Iligan City had played its role as its Industrial Center.

Queries/issues/concerns raised during the forum dwelt mostly on local governance:

- Status of the Metro Iligan Regional Agri-Industrial Center (MIRAIC);

- Ordinance from the City Government of Iligan to designate portion of the Macapagal Avenue fronting Madelicious Bakeshop where the OTOP Pasalubong Center is also located as a bus stop( drop off point) where interested passengers may be able to purchase “pasalubong” items;

- Delay in the issuance of ECC (Environmental Compliance Certificate) caused by local government units;

- Sad state of farm-to-market roads;

- No post harvest facilities in the hinterland agricultural barangays of Iligan City;

- High real property taxes in Iligan City

where are the pedestrian crossing lanes on this street? if my memory serves me right, they're only in front of the cathedral and near old Gaisano?
I've seen so many yellow boxes at junctions but few pedestrian crossing lanes. it's like vehicles are more important than pedestrians?
awwww. let me retract on that idea. the blocks in Poblacion are so small that it's not practical. it's better to ensure the junctions are clear. at least it ensures traffic flow. hopefully the traffic enforcers are up to their job, and the drivers observe road discipline, too. :cheers:
I think the entire length of Quezon Ave. should be a no-parking street.

It's no excuse. Banks and other financial establishments are within the vicinity which made this road busier. Busiest when there are activities held at the plaza.

Thanks for more great pics Alingatong. I remember standing on that very corner where you took the pic showing Unitop although it was still under construction at that time. I find it interesting that when viewing the same scene here on the internet it seems to bring out a lot more detail than when I was actually standing there. Maybe because I have more time to just stare at the entire scene.

Can you tell me what make and model cell phone cam you are using for these pics ? I wonder if I bought one, used it for a camera, and then when I come to visit get a cell phone account and just buy enough load to use it when I am there ? The rest of the time I could just use it for a camera when I am not there. Here, most cell phone accounts here in the USA have a monthly charge if you use it or not. The few pay as you go plans you buy a certain amount of " Minutes " ( load ) but if you do not use them within a certain amount of time you loose them. Thats why I dont have a cell phone here, I don't need any more monthly bills comming in LOL.

Iligan PNP chief bares election gun ban implementation

Iligan City (12 January) -- The Philippine National Police, in Iligan City, maximized posting of ten check points citywide, comprising six (6) fixed and the other four (4) as mobile, to ensure security as the election gun ban took effect on January 10, 2010.

We enumerated clearly the rules and regulations of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) for the upcoming May 10 national and local elections, disclosed PSSUPT Bernardo L. Reamon, Jr., city director of the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO).

Under Comelec Resolution 8714 which provides only regular PNP members and the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and other law enforcement agencies of the government who are duly deputized in writing by Comelec may be authorized to carry and possess firearms during the election period, said Reamon.

During the election period, no person shall bear, carry or transport firearms or other deadly weapons in public places, including any building, street, park, private vehicle, or private conveyance, even if licensed to possess or carry the same, unless authorized in writing by the Commission.

Also, we have established a Joint Security Control Center with the city election officer as chairman. The center is based at Camp Tomas Cabili, ICPO-PNP Headquarter, Tipanoy, this city, Reamon disclosed.

All election-related matter shall pass through the Center. In the case of any candidate for public office, including incumbent officer seeking election to any public office, or any public officer or private individual, who wants to employ, avail of or engage the services of security personnel or bodyguard, shall course through their reasons or circumstances for the application at the center in accordance with the Comelec procedures.

The PNP is directed to suspend the issuance of firearms licenses during the election period.

The law states that the processing and approval of new firearm license, including renewal of license, may continue on condition that the new license and firearm shall be kept in deposit with the Firearms and Explosives Division of the PNP until after of the election period.

Iligan junior heroes pledge to support PNP program

Iligan City (12 January) -- Another group of pupils from the 5th and 6th grade levels of the Bagong Silang Elementary School in Iligan City, took their oath as Junior Heroes within their locality.

The 4th barangay, this city, to have pupils pledged to be partners in the call for peace of the Iligan City Police Office-Philippine National Police (ICPO-PNP).

"The Junior Heroes, a school-based program of the ICPO, allows grade schoolers to get involve in crime prevention within their community," expressed PO2 Musolini Fernan, Jr., Operations, Police Non-Commission Officer (PNCO) of ICPO, who represented PSINSP Ramil Lluisma, chief, ICPO's Police Community Relations (PCR).

As junior heroes, the 200 pupils were given each a wrist band and t-shirt which symbolize their respect to one another, to do good in the school and in the community, as well.

They were also provided crayon and a coloring book entitled, "Mundong Walang IED (A World without Improvised Explosive Devise [IED])." This is a description of a peaceful place, regardless of its culture and tradition, Christian and Muslim-alike, living in harmony.

Further, the book differentiates types of IEDs that pupils should be aware of.

As part of the junior heroes program, SPO2 Lyrma Cajegas disclosed the four (4) Rights of a Child, which are: a) Right to Live; b) Right to Play; c) Right to Education; and d) Right to be Protected.

Their Right to Protection means for these children to be protected from harm due to terroristic acts using IEDs.

The program is to prevent these children against drug menace to society, thus, SPO2 Cajegas reiterated, "As heroes, young as these pupils are, they will be part of the PNP's "No to Drugs" campaign.

The policewoman encouraged the junior heroes to study hard and the PNP team shall visit them in school a month after, to check on what the junior heroes' been doing as model to the school and to their community.

Complementing the PNP's program is the support provided by the U.S. Military Information Team headed by Sgt. Jade Rueda.

Sgt Rueda disclosed that providing information materials such as the wrist band and the shirt marked ‘junior heroes,' crayons and coloring books, are their way of extending support to promote peace in the area. (PIA LDN) [top]

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines -- The National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP) on Friday decried the physical harassment by an Iligan City councilor of a local broadcaster, who was exposing alleged misuse of government funds there.

Richel Umel, chair of the NUJP’s Iligan City chapter, said it was “conduct unbecoming” when city councilor Chonilo Ruiz threw punches at DxRJ anchor Albert Loyola inside the announcer’s booth on Wednesday morning while he was in the middle of his public affairs program.

Interviewed by phone, Loyola recounted that he was discussing details of the city council’s budget both for 2009 and 2010 when Ruiz suddenly barged into the announcer’s booth around 7:50 a.m. and attacked him.

“I am okay although my body still aches,” Loyola said, adding the station has a record of what transpired inside the booth during those moments.

Loyola said he started discussing the city council’s budget back in November last year when he got hold of some documents.

He said that subsequent investigations revealed there was “imbalance” in the way the local government’s money was appropriated. He cited examples such as the P6 million for medicines in the city hospital while the city council enjoys P9 million each for consultancy, janitorial, and general services.

In addition, Loyola said he found out that the city council also has P14 million for committee services, which he said, Ruiz told him last December is being used to fund expenses for public hearings and consultations.

But around mid-December, Loyola said he was told by assistant city budget officer Racel Balbutin that the fund for committee services, plus some P8 million unused funds for consultancy services, went to pay for casual workers.

Loyola said Balbutin hinted those for janitorial and general services were also used to pay casual workers.

The subject has been regular topic since November in Loyola’s Radyo Patrol, which airs from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m.

In the course of the discussions last Wednesday, Loyola had branded Ruiz “a liar,” Umel noted.

The comment is certainly off mark, but he did not deserve the punches of Ruiz for that, said Umel.

Umel added that when interviewed by a media outfit, Ruiz reportedly said he will not issue any apology for the incident and will face the consequences of his action.

All systems go for Sinulog 2010 Lanao Norte contingent

Iligan City (15 January) -- IN a bid to finally capture the elusive championship in the biggest cultural stage of the Philippines – Cebu's Sinulog Festival, the Lanao del Norte contingent arrived early last January 13 for the grandest cultural festival in the country.

"This is the fulfillment to our promise to last year's winning group in the Municipal Festival Contest during our Golden Araw Anniversary. And with their spectacular win, we are sending this year to the Sinulog the Kapatagan National High School to be our contingent," explained Governor Khalid Dimaporo.

This is the second time that the provincial government is sending an official contingent in the Free Interpretation category where Lanao del Norte placed 4th over-all in a category that saw 25 groups compete.

"We are joining this festival first to show that Lanao del Norte is composed of diverse people groups and cultures and second is to declare that our province is a very peaceful place," Dimaporo said.

Last year, Lanao del Norte was also able to grab the coveted title of Best in Costume despite being a first-timer in the festival.

"It's all systems go for our second attempt at the Free Interpretation title," assured Tourism Officer Minda Regis.

This year, the province's Sinulog contingent is composed of 95 dancers, 50 propsmen, 30 instrumentalists and 24 support group personnel. Lanao del Norte is also represented by Lota Correos from the capital town of Tubod in the Sinulog Festival Queen.

"This is another chance for us to showcase to the whole world that Lanao del Norte is indeed a beautiful and peaceful province where people live in unity and harmony with one another," said Information Officer Lyndon Calica.

NFA assures enough, stable supply of rice in Lanao Norte, Iligan

Iligan City (15 January) -- Despite increasing trend on prices of other commodities, the price sold by the National Food Authority (NFA) to its accredited outlets remains stable.

NFA Provincial Manager Edegary H. Roncal of Iligan City said that they have enough rice supply with an estimated 5,000 metric tons (MT) stored at their warehouses located in Bara-as, Iligan City and at Panguil, in Lala, Lanao del Norte.

Roncal revealed that their local NFA office is programmed to receive some 27,000 MT imported rice from Misamis Oriental for the 2010 considered as the load port of NFA region 10.

This imported rice will serve as the buffer stocks of the province aside from its local palay procurement which the agency can buy from the local farmers of the province.

"To ensure that government subsidized rice channeled to its accredited outlets reaches to its intended beneficiaries, the local NFA intensifies its market monitoring and enforcement activities, enjoined by other agencies and the consuming public, for efficient implementation of our program," said Roncal.

She added, the local NFA continues to implement its regular rice distribution program to its accredited outlets like Tindahan Natin Outlet (TNO), Tindahan sa Parokya (TSP), Bigasan sa Barangay Outlet (BBO), Institutionalized Bigasan sa Palengke (IBSP), and NFA Licensed Retailers.

Only the community based outlets such as TNOs and TSPs continue to avail the NFA subsidized price for rice at P18.25/kilogram to its identified family beneficiaries.

While market based outlets such as IBSP, BBO and individual retailers sell NFA rice at P25.00/kilogram, P30.00/kilogram, and P32.00/kilogram, respectively, depending on the rice variety and quality purchased.

The food agency assures the public that it will continue to deliver its mandate of ensuring food security and buffer stocks availability through its local palay procurement program and the timely positioning of its rice dispersal, stressed Roncal. (NFA Iligan/PIA 10)

Feature: Back-to-back wins for Lanao del Norte Sinulog contingent

Cagayan de Oro City (18 January) -- Neither rain nor heat was able to stop the tired but inspired Lanao del Norte contingent as they put on a stunning performance that dazzled the mammoth crowd in Cebu City Sports Center for the Sinulog grand showdown.

The near-perfect performance was enough to give the contingent their second consecutive 4th placed finish in the Free Interpretation Category that had 22 contingents competing. The Land of Beauty and Bounty also won 3rd place in the street dancing competition which was participated in by all contestants in the Sinulog.

The showdown performance capped the 5.1 kilometer route of the Street Dancing Competition which tested the dancers' endurance as they performed their street dancing routine in seven (7) judging checkpoints along the route.

"The main reason why we're joining the Sinulog is to be able to show to the entire country and those watching this festival around the world that Lanao del Norte is a peaceful province. And I believe that we have been able to do that here. This win is already a big bonus for us," Governor Khalid Dimaporo said.

Tribu Himag-ulaw of Placer, Masbate took the 1st place in the Free Interpretation Category while the Sinanduloy Cultural Troupe of Tangub City is starting another winning streak in the Sinulog-based category after failing to grab their 4th straight grand prize in 2008.

This year's contingent is composed of students from the Kapatagan National High School, the champion in the municipal festivals contest during the golden anniversary of the province.

The consistent high-level performance of'The Land of Beauty and Bounty' contingent is fast making Lanao del Norte a crowd favorite in the annual spectacle.

"The weather really tested the endurance of the students, but I'm sure the prayers of the parents and our supporters here in Cebu and back in the province had a lot to do with our continued success in the Sinulog," Information Officer Lyndon Calica said.

The winners in the Free Interpretation category were: 1st place - Tribu Himag-ulaw, Placer, Masbate; 2nd place - Lumad Basakanon; 3rd place - Pinta Flores, San Carlos City; 4th place - The Land of Beauty and Bounty / Province of Lanao de Norte; 5th place - Mabolo Elementary School.

COTABATO CITY (PNA) – The Iligan City Council has passed a resolution endorsing to both houses of Congress the passage of two pending bills that would pave the way for the creation of the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) or the Mindanao Economic Development Authority (MEDA).

The resolution provided additional push for the creation of a Mindanao-wide government mechanism that will ensure continuity of peace and development efforts in southern Philippines.
The resolution is endorsing the passage of House Bill No. 6958 for the creation of MinDA while Senate Bill 3496 for the creation of MEDA.

Iligan City Councilor Orlando Maglinao, author of the resolution, believes that the two legislative measures will accelerate the socio-economic growth, advance efforts towards peace and promote tourism and investments in Mindanao.

Last December 13, the Senate has already approved during the third and final reading the bill creating MEDA and agreed to adopt House Bill No. 6958, the counterpart bill earlier approved by Congress last November 16, as the final version.

The bills, which are due for a bicameral deliberation, are among the remaining priority measures that have been pipelined when both chambers resume session this month.

Both MEDA and MinDA bills have been pushed in view of the need for Mindanao to catch up with the mainstream national development.

The general provisions of the bills seek to strengthen the existing Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) by converting it into MEDA.

Senator Edgardo Angara, co-sponsor of the bill, said that given the vast potentials and strategic geographical location of Mindanao, he would like to see the island-region transform from being a backdoor to becoming the country’s front door to greater economic opportunities especially in the East ASEAN region.

guys, i have talked to Peter Po, nag ask ko nya kung why he gave up his konica branch in pala-o (beside fiesta Mall), he told me that nag end na ang ila contract sa rivson and dili na niya kaya bayad sa rental fee, becoz gusto sa rivson the whole bldg japon, thats why wala na ang konica, nd ICI on that bldg. and he told me na the bldg will under go renovation, kay ang Mercury Drug Corporation will going to rent the whole bldg.

3. also, when you say "In Thousands of Pesos", you should remove the last 3 digits on the right to reflect the correct figure in the table underneath. For example, if you mean to say Four Thousand, the figure should only show FOUR, because the units are already in "thousands of pesos". Otherwise, if you show 4,000 in numbers, that will be read as Four MILLION because of the unit given in the heading.

MSU-IIT high school students reap N. Mindanao digital film awards

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY (MindaNews/20 Jan) -- Students of the Integrated Developmental School (IDS) of MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) reaped eight of the 11 awards during the second Cinemagis, a digital short film festival contest in the Northern Mindanao region.

The contest is spearheaded by the National Commission on Culture and the Arts and Xavier University’s Center for Culture and the Arts.

Contest organizer Hobart P. Savior, director of XUCCA, said during the awarding ceremony at SM City Cagayan de Oro last Tuesday that for this year’s Cinemagis, over 20 films were submitted for consideration, but only six were shortlisted. The chosen films were shown at SM Cinema during the three-day film festival that ended today.

IDS garnered the best short film award with the movie “Sealed.” The second and third best films are also from IDS -- “Checkmate” and “Scripted,” respectively.

The winning IDS students are Katherine Aine Codas for best director (“Sealed”), Joshua Ling and Nadine Joselle Chu for best sound scoring (“Sealed”), Amiel Rodas and Alfonz Montelibano for best editing (“Scripted), Roberto Klemente Timonera for best cinematography (“Checkmate”), and Glenmark Doromal for best art direction (“Sealed”).

Other winners were Debbie Cabague for best female performer (“A Voice Within”), and MSU-IIT college students Carlo Edson Ramirez for best male performer and Mark Anthony Ermac for best story, both for the film “She’s My Angel.”

During the first festival last year, IDS students also figured prominently, winning several awards.

Starting the previous school year, IDS also has its own digital film festival dubbed “DiscArte” under the initiative of information technology teacher Ronal Jay Hupa. (MindaNews)

if you want to confirm this, look up the figures again, if they're realistic.

^^ Look pre, since you said that there is discrepancy in that COA list, you should be the one who has the most care in posting. You posted that COA list and then at the same trying to scrutinize it. You started the whole scrutinizing and at the same time trying to put inputs that also question the figures.

Next time, be responsible on your posts and actions coz I don't get what you're trying to point out. Are you trying to let us know new information that ILigan is a billionaire cities club, or just trying to compare Gen San to Iligan City because Iligan has surpassed Gensan in that supposedly inaccurate COA list? Now, which of the two are you pointing out? :bash::nuts:

definitely agree...

Iligan even became a billionaire city ahead of CDO (I think in the 1990s, there were only 4 B-cities in the island (Davao, CDO, Zamboanga and Iligan) GenSan became the fifth...

Iligan's income went down drastically when NSC closed but now it's back in business...

the only error in the list is the title ...it should 2008 and not 2010.

please check out the COA report for 2008, and you will see what I mean about correct usage of unit of figures (in thousands) including the correct numbers.
