Ang lamian nako diha sa Kristine's kay ang "choco roll" (if im right with the name).

Biggest steel plant to operate in Iligan
Post Published: 12 June 2010
By RUEL V. PELONE

http://www.businessweekmindanao.com/content/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/steel.jpg

THE good old days where Iligan City’s economy was primarily driven by the steel manufacturing industry is back again.

TKC Steel Corp., producer of world-class quality steel pipes and billets, is set to begin operation of its P450-million Iligan City facility next month, the company said in a statement.

Considered as the single biggest steel billet-making plant in the country, this facility will increase the TKC’s production capacity of steel billets — which are used to make other steel products like nails and wires — by making the production process cheaper and more efficient, and reducing the company’s dependence on limited supplies of scrap metal as raw material.

“TKC is currently in the completion phase of the construction of its blast furnace and ore beneficiating plant. The facility is projected to move into commissioning phase in the third quarter of this year,” the company said in a statement.

“At full operation, the facility is rated to produce up to 400,000 metric tons per year of liquid iron, which will be used as raw material feed for the production of steel billets,” it added.

Once completed, the plant will cover close to half of the country’s steel billet production, estimated to reach close to a million metric tons a year by 2011.
Despite the Philippine’s increased production, the company said the country would still have to import about half a million metric tons of steel billet to meet the domestic demand of 1.5 million tons every year.

TKC said its new facility would help revitalize the country’s mining industry. According to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, the Philippines is estimated to have about 493 billion metric tons of iron ore reserves.

TKC claims to have about five million metric tons of raw iron ore reserved for the company from local mining firms. This is enough to meet TKC’s needs for the next five years.

Good for Iligan City!

Thank you for welcoming me.

The dates are all tentative, except for the grand opening one. But the owner wants the mall to be opened to the public soon.

Just a heads up, guys, 3 food chains have already started touching their stalls. When I said touching, I meant construction. They have already started setting up their own interior works. Each stall would have its own unique approved designs. I've seen them and they all look really good.

The contractors are also hoping to finish the exterior walls by the second week of April. To be honest, that should have been done a week ago had it not for the continued rains. (Maulan sa Iligan these past several weeks.) BTW, the owner decided to use claddings for the exterior walls facing the highway. Claddings are very expensive but they are very, very nice to look at. In between the cladded portion of the exterior walls will be giant billboards intended for advertisements.

This mall will have giant exterior lightings to brighten up the whole exterior walls (or the entire building) so that when you're far away from the mall, you'll see it as if it's a huge xmass tree with ample lightings the would dominate the entire Iligan skyline. Magandang-maganda talaga ang mall na ito kasi this will be the prime Gaisano Mall in Mindanao. The owner is keen on penetrating Iligan area very seriously. However, all this would depend primarily on the success of this first one -- in this city.

The mall has a grand atrium, semi-circular in form on the right side of the entrance/facade. (BTW, there are 3 entrances on the ground floor and additional entrances on every floor in the parking area, which is again a multi-level parking.) On the ground-floor of the atrium would be a function area, such as for exhibits and concerts. Gaisano is now heavily trying to put on blue print the negotiation with GMA7 to send the entire S.O.P. hosts and staff for this mall’s grand opening and which will be telecasted nationwide. Another grand concert/event is planned on September 29, in time for the city fiesta.

See you all on the opening. from MackyK

Hello guys nag back thread reading ako , eto nabasa ko, ano na nangyari dito? natuloy ba yung Show ng S.O.P. sa grand opening ng mall or any plans na ituloy nila with the new show na Party Pilipinas? added exposure din yan sa Gmall at sa buong city ng iligan.

A while back I believe I read somewhere I think it was the Dept. of Tourism, Iligan, was going to offer training for Iliganons desiring to become tour guides. I do not recall if these were going to be part time or on call Paid or Volunteer positions.

I think " Tourism " can be separated into at least two catagories, Domestic and International each with its own marketplace to be catered to. There could also be several types of what I would call Niche markets for things that primarily apply to Iligan and not easily found elsewhere.

For me, the primary sources that have and continue to give me thoughts and ideas of things I may want to see and do when I come to visit are right here on SSC-Iligan and second to that, Youtube. I don't know many people on the web know of SSC but I think Youtube is universal. To me it is " The Worlds Own TV Channel " . In recent months Iligan has established it's own Youtube Channel known as " theiligancity " and I have seen a lot of excellent video on that channel. I am not sure how that channel originated or it's relationship with City Hall or the Dept. of Tourism

As I have said many times, I think the best promotion of Iligan that I have seen on the internet are things posted by the many residents and friends of Iligan who post their own pics and vids. Maybe many people there do not have as many things as those in other parts of the world but what they Do have, they take great pride in and don't mind sharing it with the rest of the world on the internet. To me, that really says a lot !

There is a lot of information about Iligan on the internet which brings up another interesting point to think about when considering International Tourism. How can the rest of the world know of the existance of Iligan ?
As the regulars on here know, it is a place I only found out about by accident.

When I first began websurfing Iligan, I checked out some websites primaarily dedicated to travelers from other parts of the world. Some of the information about Iligan was posted from as far back as 2002 or thereabouts. On my first visit I realized that things have changed since those posts were put up and some of those posts appeared on what seemed to be on multiple websites.

Over the past couple of months I have put up some posts and pics to serve as an update to posts that were already there and also include new information along with some pics, some from my visits and a few from SSC-Iligan ( used with permission ) and other sources. Bear in mind I wrote these from the viewpoint of my being a foriegn or " International " visitor and that is the thought I had in mind when I wrote them. They are based on my own first hand experiences and impressions. I will add more items eventually.

As I was doing a research of my thesis in 2008, I have recorded a few legends related to Iligan City:

LEGENDS OF MYTHICAL CREATURES

1) The Legend of Tambiyong

According to some old folks, the flood of Iligan, which is said to be the most disastrous that happens in every 12 years, is caused by a legendary creature named “Tambiyong”. Every 12 years, the river of Iligan would swell and that everytime it swells, “a boat” would pass by upstream, or sometimes, downstream. It is told that if the flood is shallowy and not that strong, it is said that the boat is going upstream without any cargo. When the flood is so deep and strong, the boat is going downstream and that it is full of harvest “cacao fruit”.

The same goes for Mandulog River. It is said that every time the water swells, a boat would pass by with shining bright lights.

In the floods of 2007, that was November, some raconteurs told that the flood of Iligan River, was caused by a big boat passing by. Some raconteurs that I asked told that a kid actually saw a big boat passed by and even told his mother that they should ride on it because it is big. Another raconteur even told that they heard a big boat’s horn as far as Carbide Village during the height of Iligan River’s flood. It was also told that there was no boat docking at Iligan City’s port that time.

Everytime the floods happen at both rivers, the folks would then again tell of their experiences regarding sightings and stories heard from other people who have seen such “mythical beings”.

The bad thing about this legend is that a “manghihilot” told me that every time “Tambiyong” comes down with harvest of “cacao fruits”. The cacaos are not just fruits, they are the lives wasted at the river for the past 12 years being carried into the after life.

2) The Golden Cow

I have read a book of legends at MSUIIT’s main library which told of a golden cow being seen at Maria Cristina Falls. According to the book, two hikers stayed and camped near the area of the falls because it was getting dark. While sleeping at night, at around 2am, one of the two hikers awakened. As he opened his eyes, he set it on the gushing falls. He was amazed to see a shining golden cow directly beneath the gushing waters. Because of this sight, he awakened his companion.

It is told that because of Iligan’s rapid urbanity that the golden cow is no longer sighted at Maria Cristina Falls.

3) The Legend of the Phyton

According to my lola, her mother once told that the sound of Maria Cristina Falls can be heard even at Tambacan. Everytime the falls creates a stronger than the usual sound, it is said that a big phyton is out and makes its body cool directly at the falls.

4) The Mythical Prince

My lola told that every night before they sleep, her mother told of a story about a prince who continuously to ride a horse at night to court a princess who is said to be the daughter of a night star. The prince would ride a horse at night and would go to the west directly to the brightest star. That bright star is said to be the princess. My lola told that her mother who once told of the story by her grandmother told of hearing the steps of a running horse at night. According to the legend, the daughter’s father told that if the prince wants his daughter, he must be able to get the princess’ yes before the sun rises in the east. It is told that because the prince is always caught by the rising sun, he would do it again just to pursue this girl.

As I was researching of my thesis, and having narrated this to Prof. Christian Aguado of MSUIIT, he also remembered of hearing such story and was even amazed that my lola heard of such story too.

^^ according to Iligan City's FB page, that pic was during the 1950s. Nakapunta pa nga si President Quirino dito aftermath of the big fire that time.

Welcome " Aaron of the H20fols " . to SSC-Iligan. SSC has been my picture window to Iligan from half way around the world since I found this website a few years ago. In fact, it was the pics on SSC-Iligan that became a primary inspiration for me to visit Iligan and see it for myself. At times, when something happens in Iligan you'll see it and read about it here on SSC-Iligan first !

I have met some of the forumers individually, a great group of people. I look forward to meeting more of them on future visits.

THE only qualifying school from Mindanao, the WL Consultancy Group of the Mindanao State University -Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) is more than fired up to show its counterparts in Manila that their team is the “team to beat” in the final round of the Philippine search for its representatives to the Global Business Challenge (GBC) organized by the UK-based Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (Cima).

Dean Alita Roxas of the College of Business Administration and Accountancy said the school and the rest of the Iligan community felt a strong sense of pride after MSU-IIT was recently chosen one of the top six finalists, but she was not surprised.

All six teams face off on June 26 for the chance to represent the Philippines in Kuala Lumpur in August.

“MSU-IIT students have fared well in competitions, in many instances emerging as the only state university in Mindanao competing with UP, Ateneo, De La Salle, San Carlos and Silliman University in the championship round,” Roxas said.

The MSU-IIT, located in Lanao del Norte, is one of the satellite campuses of the MSU System. The school later became the first autonomous campus of the MSU system in 1975. Roxas added that the university serves as “home’ to culturally diverse students coming from different parts of Mindanao and students from Luzon and Visayas.

Roxas said the school’s Accounting curriculum is very responsive to the changes and trends in the environment. They make sure to teach students relevant courses that are useful in the workplace and that will build their confidence to start their own business ventures.

“The curriculum that the team members will be graduating from is a 5-year ladderized curriculum that allows the students to graduate three times. At the end of third year the students are allowed to graduate with the Associate in Accounting Technology, then at the end of their fourth year, a degree in Accounting Technology and finally at the end of the 5th year with Bachelor of Science in Accountancy,” she explained.

Wilfreda Loable, team mentor of the WL Consultancy Group, said her team is on a par with other finalists. “There is that misconception that if you are from outside NCR [National Capital Region], you are inferior. That is not so,” she argued.

Loable asserted that MSU-IIT accounting students are hard-working, cooperative, resourceful, dependable and willing to listen.

“Probably, the edge of our students is that they are nurtured in an environment that has close relationship with their teachers and other students who are willing to support them all the way, supportive parents and if asked, the city government of Iligan,” she added.

The WL Consultancy Group headed by their team leader Jesther Ian Gonzales said they are excited for the upcoming competition on June 26 where their team has to defend their case report and analysis before a panel of judges; and at the same time, have a taste of “corporate politics.”

“It’s a whole new level of experience and opportunity for career growth and professional development. I feel proud as a team leader for I was able to move my team to such a degree and length that we were able to come this far. This is a team effort and I think we deserve it,” Gonzales added.

Team member Jason John Alegarme said their experience counted all throughout the preparation for the competition. Their group spent many nights without sleep and had to put themselves into isolation to come up with a sound paper, enough to titillate their readers’ business minds.

“I crave to speak before a crowd, share the thoughts I have gained and grasp the feeling I’ve long waited for--to win with all pride and enthusiasm not for ourselves but for lifting the name of our school MSU-IIT,” Alegarme declared.

For Hanilyn Tiago, another team member, the competition is an opportunity for her to grow as a person and to enhance her potentials as a future management accountant. Moreover, it allowed her to make use of what she has learned in the simulated situation and helped her generate viable solutions to issues, thus serving as a preparation for the future.

Citing teamwork and passion as key elements in winning the GBC competition, Chacy Kay Atan of the WL Consultancy Group felt grateful for CIMA and to her school for the chance to discover more of themselves and be discovered.

Atan offered her thoughts on what makes a good and credible business leader. At a young age, she shared that an ideal business leader is someone who has unquestionable integrity, responsible, trustworthy and has the capability and the ability to lead the team to the success of their goals.

But more important, Atan said he or she should be someone whose voice is heard and respected, and values the welfare of the employees who are behind the company’s name. In sum, a good and credible business leader is someone who is not only profit-oriented but employee-oriented as well.

Team coach Wilfreda Loable recalled how the team has prepared for the competition. She said the main bulk of students’ preparation was devoted to the case analysis where they had to do research about the industry Dizz (a fictitious company created by CIMA for the final round where the team of each school will act out as part of the company).

“The students did an extensive research to expand their knowledge on finance, management, economics, marketing, strategic management and other matters that would help them answer the questions during the presentation and defense of their case solution,” she added.

Loable has always reminded her team not to be intimidated by other competing teams especially those coming from NCR because they are taught with the same knowledge and exposed to the same training.

“The fact that our school is not very well known as La Salle, UST, San Carlos and UP, then there is no expectation from us and it is a privilege and honor to surprise them from time to time. For this contest, I told them to dream—Kuala Lumpur. It’s not impossible,” she said.

Quirino's grandson graces 60th Adlaw sa Iligan
by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (21 June) -- President Elpidio R. Quirino, the sixth President of the Philippines, signed into law Republic Act 525 on June 16, 1950, providing for the creation of then municipality of Iligan into a chartered city.

Alfonso Quirino, the presidential grandson representing the Quirino family, received the posthumous honor, in humble recognition the City has given to President Elpidio R. Quirino, during the commemorative program at the Iligan City Freedom Park on 16th June, which marks this year's 60th lligan Charter Day celebration.

In both historical and landmark events that ushered in a new era for Iligan, my grandfather has made all of the events possible and we felt honored by your invitation to be with you in this momentous event, expressed Alfonso Quirino in a short message.

The administration of Pres. Quirino, who succeeded President Roxas in 1948, pursued the Maria Cristina Hydroelectric Plant project, with a companion fertilizer plant to absorb the larger bulk of power generated through domestic financing.

In 1949, the Central Bank, which was founded in the same year, released to National Power Corporation (NPC) the amount of P16 million. The loan would finance the first of the five generating units of Maria Cristina power plant and the first of the two units of the ammonium sulphate fertilizer plant.

Actual construction began in August 1950. Pres. Quirino accompanied by his daughter and some cabinet officials visited iligan on December 1951 to unveil a marker of the Maria Cristina Falls development project.

This manifested the importance his administration attached to the projects. The marker is situated in the old NPC housing just above the famous falls. (PIA LDN)

Awarding of top three business enterprises highlights 60th Adlaw sa Iligan
by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (21 June) -- Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of Iligan led the awarding of Investment Incentive Certificates to the three (3) top business enterprises in Iligan.

On its 60th Charter Day celebration on June 16, held at the City Freedom Park, the Iligan Investment Board gave out incentives to people or enterprises who invest in Iligan City.

These enterprises believed that Iliganons have the purchasing power to buy their products. Also, they believed that the Iliganons have the expertise to operate their manufacturing plant. And they believed that doing business in Iligan is profitable.

Thus, these enterprises passed the requirements for the availment of investment incentives include: the World Wide Gourmet, Incorporated, who operates McDonald's Iligan; the Kowloon Bay Food Corporation, who operates Chowking Tibanga; and, the Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation, for their expansion and diversification project which started operation on August 2008.

Executive Director Rolando Cuizon of the Iligan Investment Promotions Center said that in accordance with the provisions of the City Ordinance No. 4924, series of 2006 otherwise known as "The Revised Iligan City Investment Incentives and Promotions Code," the corresponding awardees shall avail the following conditions:

That the business entity is granted exemption from payment of the Basic Real Property Tax and Business Tax on Gross Sales/Receipts for a period of six years starting 2010 up to 2015.

That during the above mentioned period, this business entity must pay the Special Education Fund and that failure to do so tantamount to revocation of this registration and incentives.

That during every end of the year of the above mentioned period, this business entity must share to the Special Development Fund of the Board an amount equivalent to one tenth (1/10) of one percent (1%) of the incentives availed.

The event also cited among others Iligan's Top 60 Taxpayers and First 10 Taxpayers, cognizant to the 60th Adlaw sa Iligan celebration, giving them Plaque of Recognition. (PIA LDN)

PPA cargo volume posts double-digit growth in Q1
Written by VG Cabuag / Reporter
Monday, 21 June 2010 21:05
BusinessMirror

THE Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) said it posted a double-digit growth in the volume of cargoes it handled for the first quarter of the year, boosted mainly by export goods.

The PPA reported that for the first three months of 2010, its cargo increased by close to 23 percent, to 39.53 million metric tons (MT), from 32.21 million MT for the same period last year.

Significant increases in cargo volume were recorded in the PPA’s port management offices in Iloilo, Puerto Princesa, Iligan, San Fernando and Dapitan.

“The improvements may be attributed to the increase in the shipment of corn, cement, grains, coconut oil, flour, chemicals and other general cargoes, and export products such as coal, mineral fuels, limestone and coconut oil,” the PPA said in its report.

The PPA, however, said there was a decline of cargo volume in some ports, such as the Manila South Harbor, a facility operated by Asian Terminals Inc., and those in Cotabato, Nasipit, General Santos and Batangas.

Overall, domestic cargo throughput increased by 9.5 percent, or 1.6 million MT, and 37 percent, or 5.72 million MT, for foreign cargoes, the PPA said.

In terms of containerized cargoes, the PPA said its first-quarter cargo throughput reached 1.07 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs), or 21 percent, higher than the previous year’s 881,978 TEUs last year.

“Both domestic and foreign container traffic improved by 12.83 percent and 27.48 percent, respectively,” the PPA said.

The combined containerized cargo at the South Harbor and Manila International Container Terminal, the country’s largest, reached 615,936 TEUs, or about 57 percent, of the total volume during the period. The remaining cargo volumes were from the other government ports.

Passenger traffic improved by 16 percent as local and foreign tourists flocked to the country’s top destinations during the summer period. The PPA said there were 11.4 million passengers who used sea transportation like the roll-on, roll-off vessels, higher than last year’s 9.82 million people.

Manila North Harbor, for the first time in two years, had shown an impressive increase of 66 percent of the number of passengers as a result of the resumption of operations of Sulpicio Lines Inc. and Negros Navigation Co.’s attractive promotions given to passengers.

The other places that showed improvement in passenger traffic include Calapan, Legazpi, Cagayan de Oro, Batangas and Tacloban.

For the period, ship calls also increased by 11 percent to 82,369 vessels from the previous year’s 74,114 as both domestic and foreign calls. The ports that showed increases include San Fernando, Iloilo, Tacloban, Cagayan de Oro, Dapitan and Zamboanga.

2 in Lanao Norte armored van robbery caught

By Richel Umel
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 14:57:00 06/23/2010

Filed Under: robbery, Police, Crime, Banking

ILIGAN CITY, Philippines—Lanao Del Norte police authorities arrested a group of armored van robbers in Kolambugan town and recovered $186,000 in cash.

Chief Inspector Elmer Robas, Kolambugan police chief, told the INQUIRER by phone that two suspects were also arrested during Tuesday’s incident while two others managed to flee on foot.

Robas said the armored van came from the Bank of the Philippine Islands branch in Ozamiz City and was on its way to Cagayan de Oro City when stopped by four motorcycle-riding men in Barangay Muntay in Kolambugan around 9:30 a.m.

“The four unidentified motorcycle-riding armed men used spikes on the road to stop the van which was on its way to Cagayan de Oro City,” he said.

He did not say how many persons were manning the armored van at that time.

Robas said that while the armed men were emptying the armored van, a civilian in the area managed to alert the police via text.

“They were still trying to empty the armored van when our troops arrived,” Robas said.

He said two of the suspects were immediately subdued without the police firing a single shot, but the two others managed to escape.

Robas identified the arrested suspects as Edgardo Sudlon of Molave, Zamboanga Del Sur and Rodrigo Deguma of Kapatagan. Lanao Del Norte.

He said an investigation is still being conducted to determine if they are members of an organized robbery gang operating in the northwestern Mindanao area.

“They were brought to the municipal police station in Kolambugan,” Robas said.

Robas also hinted that among those being investigated was the driver of the armored van, which BPI has contracted to deliver the money to Cagayan de Oro City.

"We are also looking for his possible involvement since one bundle of money, which is part of the $186,000 cash, was found underneath the carpet below the driver's seat,” he said.

Do they have plans to have a route to Pagadian anytime soon??

@ boom_box - You should support this company too. Although i'm a Kagay-anon, but i'm supporting them. Everytime i go to Iligan, i make sure i'll ride on their buses. It's time for small player bus company like S5T to get some support...it's our loss if we won't.

@ hans_leona - They still have that route to Pagadian, but with ordinary buses. I'm not sure if they will be fielding their Airconditioned buses on that route though. So far the franchise of their A/C buses are only for Iligan-CdO route. They are still in rebuilding mode.

@ Alingatong - you're welcome! How 'bout saying, "Iligant"?! :)

I wish Super 5 would re-establish a good Pagadian-CDO route. Rural Transit buses can't accommodate passengers bound for Kapatagan and Pagadian, as seen in Tambo and even in Bulua terminals. The battle for bus seats is getting uglier by the day.

When i took the photos yesterday, i so wanna ride it right then, but i guess i have to wait. may araw ka rin.

The dispatcher told me that this bus is almost a month old with S5T already. There are two buses of this model, S027 and S028.

The Best Kept Secret of Lanao Del Norte
Post Published: 26 June 2010
Author: BWM
Found in section: Ped Quiamjot

BREATHTAKING moments serve as a backdrop to the uphill climb along the paved highway of Sultan Naga Dimaporo, a 4th class Municipality of Lanao Del Norte. Kilometers of wide and winding road that cuts the entire countryside dominated by waving fields, orchards and rice plantation reminds us of a movie scene in the Sound of Music as the Von Trup children sung their hearts happiness over a new found lovely Nanny who would later become their step mother and save them from the catastrophe of war.

With oceans ringing the horizon, you can look back to the north and the nostalgic blue waters of Pangil Bay .Downward to the south lays the Pangadian Sea and to the west is the panoramic Zamboanga Peninsula. The hills are alive at Sultan Naga Dimaporo with pastured animals coming from the local government livestock dispersal program greasing the fields. Muslims and Christian farmers are singing a celebration of things to come with a Mari culture Park of 1,372 hectares in Barangay Suyod. With a population of 46,004 based on the latest census, the sun shines and rises to a new Provincial leadership who is pushing for Agriculture and modernization.

Lanao Del Norte was visited in 2009 by 12,970 foreign tourists and 11,419 domestic Filipinos plus 1,350 US based Balikbayans. The Province is a consistent winner in many Philippine Travel Mart Exhibits as a leading destination. It won several awards in the Sinulog Festival in Cebu City for colorful costumes and street dancing. It attracted investor’s confidence in power generation, steel mills and manufacturing.

Sultan Naga Dimaporo in Lanao Del Norte is an Agri tourism potential with maximize agriculture and post harvest facilities, the local farm products are keys to sustainable peace and development. It keeps people earn their living and increase their domestic income to send their children to school for higher education. Once threatened with violence under a decade of conflict among Christians and Muslims and between the Government and the Secessionist movement, the people of Sultan Naga Dimaporo are witness to a modern transformation reliving economic prosperity and freedom.

pag ka nice sa bus ^^

I hope this bus comapny provide soon a straight direct connection to Butuan too.

Butuan and Iligan though all along within norhern seaboard...is not as seamlessly connected....coming from any of these cities one has to spend the hassles making transfers in CDO's eastern terminal to its west bound terminal if your travelling between BXU and Iligan.

The local goverment of CDO compells all bus companies for bound segregation. If you go to Iligan, you need to commute yourself from CDOs Agora to Bulua...hassle gyud

the LGUs of these cities can make a compromise para dili ma inconvenenced travellers along all Normin's main cities

This part of the city was the busiest those days, especially during special holidays like Christmas and fiesta. I remember Iligan's old PU's used to park from Gaisano main and along Ludo bldg.

Thanks for the pic updates @Alingatong. You mention " HDR " pics, what is HDR ? I missed the opening of Unitop on my last visit by a few weeks so it is something to look forward to in addition to some other new places that I have seen take place from the ground up here on SSC-Iligan.

I see another poster also notices what I have commented on many times on the street pics, the " lack of litter ". I can not remember any other place I have been to or seen a lot of pics of with such litter free appearing streets.

Always something to look forward to

HDR = High dynamic range

In image processing, computer graphics, and photography, high dynamic range imaging (HDRI or just HDR) is a set of techniques that allow a greater dynamic range of luminances between the lightest and darkest areas of an image than standard digital imaging techniques or photographic methods. This wider dynamic range allows HDR images to more accurately represent the wide range of intensity levels found in real scenes, ranging from direct sunlight to faint starlight.

High-dynamic-range photographs are generally achieved by capturing multiple standard photographs, often using exposure bracketing, and then merging them into an HDR image.

From Wiki. :)

Hmmmm I am not really that much into photography myself, ( more of a point and shoot automatic camera user myself ) but I think I can compare it to the differences in Dynamic range of playing Analog vinyl phonograph records compared to all digitally recorded Compact Disc and playing them back with 24 Bit D/A conversion.

That makes it easier for me to understand LOL ! I still wonder if you have a " litter Filter " as an option on your cameras ! Great Pics .

Friday, 18 June 2010

Mas daghan nga barangay ang maagi-an kaysa kanhing routa nga Bonbonon-Digkilaan ug Rogongon lamang.

(mta/boy decena)

When i took the photos yesterday, i so wanna ride it right then, but i guess i have to wait. may araw ka rin.

The dispatcher told me that this bus is almost a month old with S5T already. There are two buses of this model, S027 and S028.

Bus: Higer KLQ6125BA
Route: Iligan City - Cagayan de Oro City; vv.

MABUHAY TO SUPER FIVE TRANSPORT! Cheers to the riding public, especially the Iliganons, Kagay-anons, and people of Misamis Oriental and Lanao.

High-dynamic-range photographs are generally achieved by capturing multiple standard photographs, often using exposure bracketing, and then merging them into an HDR image.

for me it's still ok na walang CR. for an 85-km trip with both endpoint terminals having public CRs...IF i am the operator, i will find it illogical to have a CR inside if i can profit for around 4-passenger seats instead of having a CR inside. Just my opinion really. :)

Friday, 18 June 2010

(mta)

Iligan City Website (http://www.iligan.gov.ph/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=3994&Itemid=368)

Gisultian nako siya nga dili kay STATE U pa man ghapon ang IIT og aduna na'y separate budget og administration apart from the present system.

As a product of MSU-IIT and the MSU System, this is a piece of bad news. In my opinion, there is no need for the Institute to separate itself from the current system. The quality of education provided by IIT to its students can only be maintained if we follow a unified system provided by better institutions like MSU. MSU-IIT is already synonymous with Iligan City and I guess its unnecessary to leave MSU System at all just to make it our own university.

Hi Bob, of course I knew you were joking.
the brooms you saw were made out of the ribs of coconut leaves. that type of broom is used outdoors and is effective for rough or uneven surfaces. they can even be used to sweep a grassy lawn from fallen leaves or other lightweight litter.

ICDCC kicks off National Disaster Consciousness Month in July

by Lorry V. Gabule

Iligan City (1 July) -- The Iligan City Disaster Coordinating Council (ICDCC) joins the country and has lined up activities for this year's observance of National Disaster Conscious Month in July.

Allan B. Padilla, acting civil defense deputized coordinator of the Disaster Management Operation Center of ICDCC, said they have coordinated with their partner agencies to join with the activities calendared which started with a motorcade around the city thoroughfare on July 1.

We have identified barangays prone to flashfloods/landslide as we conduct disaster preparedness trainings and seminars to coastal and low-lying barangays located near riverbanks within the city, said Padilla.

In partnership with the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), we conduct orientation on earthquake and fire evacuation drills to private and public schools, as well as government and private offices, added Padilla.

The team also conducted building safety inspection especially to dormitories, inns and high rise buildings.

As part of our year round activity, we continue to activate the Barangay Disaster Coordinating Councils in the 44 barangays, this city, said Padilla.

Prior to this month's celebration, we conducted the Earthquake Drill to some 708 participants from the Special Education Center Elementary School, Iligan City, in the morning of 18th June.

An activity of the National Disaster Coordinating Council (NDCC) during the 2nd Quarter 2010 Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill slated on the said date.

It showcased emergency response operations within the "Golden Hour" (1st 72 hours) such as fire suppression, collapsed structure search and destroy, rescue and evacuation.

Participants included faculty and staff of the school, the pupils (including special/disabled children) with their parents/guardians.

Highlighting today's kick-off activity is the bloodletting program of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC) at the public plaza. We responded to their call with some of our staff to be possible blood donors, Padilla disclosed.

We intend to reach out boundary to boundary-barangays connecting our city and the neighboring province, as we advocate to people in a motorcade depicting the theme, "Pag alerto, Malayo sa Peligro," reiterated Padilla.

:soapbox:this is a message (rant) for all in government, who are paid by the people to render them good service.
I was really trying to balance this response from @MyDarkside and wondered if I should defend the city officers or not.
if you wonder why people react like this when they see procurement of items that seemingly does not have direct application in a project, but are used for a department's day-to-day business, you would be tempted to justify your actions, and rightly so. of course you need transportation vehicles to move personnel and materials to worksites. of course it is only practical to buy the newest and most appropriate vehicles for the purpose. after all, if you bought bicycles, you'll be wasting time and effort just in moving from one place to another. if you bought second-hand pick-up trucks, people will also think you're just throwing away money on maintenance and loss of time due to frequent breakdowns of these used equipment. of course, all these items are covered by budgets as capital appropriations.
OTOH, if you searched deeper at the reason why people react like this, and can't seem to find the answer, let me tell you why.
years and years of inefficiency, laziness and corruption have made people sick at what government calls "service to the Filipino people".
I know there are a few sincere officers out there, who truly have spent their lives trying to make a difference. I'm not talking to you. you, good guys have simply been identified with the rest of the incompetent who surround you. I feel sorry for you.
but to those who treat their work as a means of income and nothing else, you should understand why people react when they see you buying new and the latest stuff. people feel disgust when they see you spending their hard-earned tax money for nothing in return.
while I could not and did not vote for Ninoy (I'd have voted for Gordon if I had the chance), I just hope that he makes good his word, and that his administration would make government something that is more credible, trustworthy and responsible, from Malacanang all the way down to the Baranggays.
it's never too late to reform. don't wait for the whip to crack before you clean up your act. and if the years of sloth and mendicancy has rendered you totally without value at your job, so much so that you can't do anything any more to improve your productivity and efficiency, then please do your boss taxpayers and yourselves a favor - step aside and give that position to somebody else who can perform and deliver.

The problem with the City Government of Iligan is that it doesn't have an iron fist. Instead of enforcing what is right, the government gives in and tolerates what is wrong as long as the people are happy with it.

Take the case of the hard-headed MSU-IIT students (I'm an MSU-IIT alumnus by the way in case people here would react violently) who cross the street near the overpass everyday. Since the city government of Iligan seems to be unable to make this hard-headed students use the overpass and not jaywalk, the brilliant minds of the people governing this city instead made jaywalking legal by making a pedestrian lane for them in front of the MSU Coop.

Kudos to those who came up with this brilliant idea!!! Now that the overpass is no longer being used by the people going to IIT, why not demolish it completely?:nuts::ohno:

Alam naman nating well-traveled yong mga city officials natin. Yong iba nga lumabas na nang bansa. Di ba sila nainggit sa mga projects doon kahit man lang yong kalinisan ng mga daan? Bakit kaya ni sidewalk sa Iligan di malinis linis at hindi matanggal yang mga illegal structures at vendors? :ohno:

^^ Iligan is a lot better now compared how it was before

What you see in the pictures is what you get..

You're right. Iligan is much better now but still needs a lot of improvement.

Iligan needs to improve the following: (based on my observation)

1. Water supply system: on-going under the Iligan City Water Supply Development and Expansion Project

Aside from this expansion project, the ICWS should also improve its maintenance. Illegal tappings and leakages are a common sight in the city.

2. Waste Management: on-going under the Iligan City Solid Waste Management System Project.

Though Iligan is generally cleaner now, there are times of the day when garbage and litters are seen along the roads and sidewalks. Thanks to the street sweepers but providing enough garbage bins can be of help too.

3. Road Network: one of the major projects of the city is the construction of Circumferential Road - 3 (C3) which is on-going. It's really a big help to ease the traffic within the city proper once finished.

Aside from the C3, Iligan needs to improve its major thoroughfares. Quezon Ave has already been layed with asphalt but we need to see more like Sabayle and Aguinaldo St. to balance the disparity. Sidewalks should be properly paved and are cleared of obstructions. They should be used for pedestrians and not for the illegal vendors. All service roads within the Central Business District should be concreted and layered with asphalt and with proper markings too (just like Quezon Ave.).

4. Public Market - There is already a proposal for building a new modern public market.

While the project of building a new market is still on its earlier stage, Iligan needs to improve its existing 2 public markets. The Central Market has more than enough stalls to accommodate those vendors outside and along the roads. Cleanliness is a big question at the Pala-o Market. Most of the structures there are already dilapidated and drainage is a problem too.

5. City Hall/Government Center

City Hall is one of the preferred destinations in Iligan because of its location which is on top of the hill where one can relax while having a glimpse of the city. Sad to say, the parks within the complex are not maintained. The fences, the benches, the park as a whole is not that welcoming already. Viewing the city's skyline is not enjoyable and exciting anymore. Thanks to the untrimmed trees blocking most of the view. No adequate water supply at City Hall, no decent canteen either where one can take a snack or whatever. The road going up there is a pain in the ass too. While the city cannot afford to build a new city hall at this time, it does not necessarily mean that it cannot afford for the maintenance of the existing city hall too.

Indeed, there's this proposal of putting up a government center at Del Carmen but until now it has not started yet.

5. Street lights:

Save energy, save money. All it takes is a proper maintenance. City Engineers Office must conduct a thorough ocular inspection of all the street lamps in the city. Know the status of each lamp. Replace those with defective sensors (turning on even during the daylight), busted and many more.

6: Drainage system:

Avoid flooding by improving the drainage system. It was done before in some parts of the city, why not complete the project. Some canals and drainage are clogged up. Waterways should be cleared of illegal structures too.

7: Peace and security:

There are more than 40 surveillance cams installed within strategic areas in the city but these are not enough to secure Iligan. We need the presence of more city police specially in public places and areas wherein petty crimes proliferate.

I have a lot more things in my mind that Iligan needs to do in order to become a better city. I know you have yours too. Care to share? :)

In fairness to our city, the streets are clean especially in the morning. The only thing I want our city to develop is to clear our sidewalks. There are no clear sidewalks within our CBD that's why a lot of people can be seen walking on the busy streets. I hope our city officials can do something about it. Our city isn't pedestrian friendly. Even when the traffic is at a stop, the vehicles are even blocking the pedestrian crossing lanes. Our CSUs have done nothing against drivers who do this. All they do is stop vehicles that are on heavy cargoes.

^^

it will be a lot more better if the local govt.can provide the WATER in each home...so long with those promises and get those planned system working..
How true is it that the area where the water source is located still has some pending issues?does it mean that the water project will be delayed again?

(mta)

hopefully we can see some results now that the mayor has won a new fresh term.it's just that the Iliganons doesn't need too much press/praise release but sees nothing happening.and to those critics that "slowed down the project" maybe it's time to give a helping hand so we can have our potable water in our homes.:)

Ms. Maigo wins Ms. Lanao del Norte title

http://www.lanaodelnorte.gov.ph/images/stories/missmaigowins.jpg
Ms. Lanao del Norte 2010 Zeny Alcantara is flanked by Phoemela Baranda (ABS-CBN Star Patroller) on her right and by Gov. Khalid Dimaporo and Will Devaugn (PBB Celebrity Housemate) on her left. Behind are some of the members of her royal court.

Tubod, Lanao del Norte – A capacity crowd of more than 5 thousand people filled the cavernous MCC gymnasium last July 2 to witness the coronation of this year’s Ms. Lanao del Norte.

After the dust settled, Ms. Zeny Alcantara from the municipality of Maigo emerged as the 2010 Ms. Lanao del NOrte.

Ms. Alcantara also won Best in Swimwear, Best in Malong Landap gown, Ms. Congeniality, Ms. Dunkin Donuts and Ms. Nature’s Spring.

“I’m still in Cloud 9, it still hasn’t sunk in yet that I won this prestigious pageant”, Ms. Alcantara expressed.

Joining Ms. Lanao del Norte’s royal court are Aubry Ann Maquiling of Kapatagan (1st Runner-up, Doreene Mae Lugatiman of Tubod (2nd Runner-up), Lourenz Grace Remetillo of Kolambugan (3rd Runner-up) and Decemie Castillon of Matungao (4th Runner-up).

Other winners of the special awards are Ms. Maquiling (Best in Festival Costume and People’s Choice Award), Ms. Mardie Capuno of Salvador (Ms. Photogenic), Ms. Angie Lou Pates of Baroy (Best in Jungle Attire) and Ms. Stephany Rose Abella of Bacolod (Darling of the Press).

The pageant was one of the most anticipated highlight for Tourism Day which is celebrated every second day of July during the week-long festivities of Araw ng Lanao del Norte.

“We are very thankful to the mayors who responded to our invitation of fielding a candidate to this annual pageant considering that it was still a month after election”, Provincial Tourism Head Minda Regis said.

The candidates were formally presented to the public during the Environment Day celebration at Mighty Cave Park, Tagoloan, this province. Donning their jungle-inspired costumes, the candidates also gamely posed for the photographers of the competition.

Members of the tri-media from Iligan, Ozamis and Lanao del Norte were also present to interview the candidates as they choose the Darling of the Press.

“The bounty of nature that is evident here in Tagoloan is a perfect complement to the beauty of our candidates. Truly, we are indeed the Land of Beauty and Bounty”, Gov. Khalid Dimaporo declared.

As this year’s winner, Ms. Alcantara will not only be an ambassadress for the province she will also host the video documentary of the 51st Araw ng Lanao del Norte which will be produced by the Provincial Government thru its Information Office. VNL/PIO-LDN

Agri-aqua, livestock and OTOP fair open 51st Araw ng Lanao Norte

http://www.lanaodelnorte.gov.ph/images/stories/both.jpg
Gov. Khalid Q. Dimaporo poses in the winning booth of Kapatagan. The booth is made of palay which was creatively decorated in the posts and roofs of the booth structure.

Tubod, Lanao del Norte – In pursuing the gains of a strengthened peace through unity, the 51st Araw ng Lanao del Norte was officially opened with a grand parade last June 28 from the town center of Tubod to the Padian/Taboan venue in Brgy. Sagadan which also signaled the grand opening of the “Agri-Aqua, Livestock Display and OTOP Fair 2010.”

The program included the cutting of the ribbon which was officially done by Gov. Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo. Gov. Dimaporo together with municipal and provincial officials then toured the municipal booths to determine the best booth for this year.

The affair gave opportunities to our local entrepreneurs to exhibit, promote their products and increase their sales. It also supports micro, small and medium enterprises to showcase their manufacturing quality and to take pride of their distinctive products and services which utilized the use of indigenous raw materials, and local manpower.

In his message, Gov. Mohamad Khalid Q. Dimaporo gratefully congratulated all the municipalities and mayors who have joined and exerted efforts to put-up their respective booths and entries. He further said that their participation symbolized that the leaders of the province showed unity for the benefit of the people of Lanao del Norte. The governor also emphasized that it is very important for the various municipalities to show cooperation and support as the province gears up for the realization of Vision 2020.

The unique race of carabaos highlighted the agri-aqua, livestock display and OTOP fair opening. The race brought smiles and laughter to the curious on-lookers of this rare race.

Highlighting the program was the unique race of carabaos which was enthusiastically participated by farmers of the province. The first place went to Villamor Cuizon of Tubod, Lanao del Norte, Eduardo Sabayton got the second place and the third place was Laureto Pameron of Baroy, Lanao del Norte.

Several competitions like the municipal booth contest also showcased the creativity and craftsmanship of the participants in coming-up with the most presentable and inimitable booth in the site. Getting the nod of approval and the first place in the competition was the municipality of Kapatagan. Second place was awarded to the municipality of Lala. Sapad got third place, Baroy secured fourth place, and fifth and sixth place went Tubod and Salvador respectively.

The event was indeed a success with the strong partnership of the Provincial Agriculture Office (PAO) and the Provincial Veterinarian Office (PVO). ARMS/PIO-LDN
