tough August 8th, 2010, 01:21 AM Iligan City adopts 'happy soil' system
(philstar.com) Updated August 08, 2010 12:00 AM
MANILA, Philippines - After almost four years of extensive technical study and financial packaging, the City of Iligan has firmed up preparations for an efficient and long-term solution of their garbage problems.
The city will adopt the Happy Soil systems technology offered by Lacto Asia Pacific Corp. to be installed in the completed Materials Recovery with Composting Facility (MRCF) building in a city-purchased 12-hectare property in Barangay Bonbonon, with five hectares for the MRCF and seven hectares is for an environmental and eco-park. Funding for the project was obtained from the Development Bank of the Philippines.
City Mayor Lawrence Cruz, Vice Mayor Henry Dy and Chonilo Ruiz, the city councilor assigned to head the Solid Waste Technical and Implementation Team, signed the contract with Rolando Sianghio, president of Lacto Asia Pacific.
The systems design can handle 80 tons of garbage, either mixed or segregated, daily. Forty tons per day is expected to be biodegradable and the facility will be producing 20 tons of commercial grade organic fertilizer daily. The facility has provisions for incoming residual waste and even medical waste, but will aggressively pursue zero waste processing for municipal waste with the participation of Holcim cement for the plastic and residual waste.
Holcim was granted by the Department of Science and Technology an Environmental Technology Verification certificate for their co-processing of waste technologies that can utilize ash residue as cement clinkers.
Councilor Chonilo Ruiz, overall project officer, showed the officials that during the four-year study and validation period, the solid waste team was able to establish their organic garden planted to vegetables, fruit trees and more than 1,000 ylang-ylang trees, which are now fully flowering. There is now a vermi-composting area and a seedling nursery. The team is ready to receive visitors at the project site and the city has included this MRCF as one of the city’s tourist attractions.
Mayor Lawrence Cruz pointed out the city’s MRCF is expected to be the most modern and complete solid waste facility solution in the Philippines. It has two large receiving, processing and sorting areas, rotary drum for one day composting, 45-day compost maturation bins, screening and bagging areas, input materials and finished goods storage areas, a motorpool and truck washing section, training rooms, visitor ramps, and administrative offices.
The facility is expected to be fully operational by December, supported by three barangay MRFs that will handle the overload garbage volumes. The intervening period from now till December will prepare the city barangays for waste segregation programs required for the successful implementation of the MRF solid waste program.

g0Rs August 8th, 2010, 08:13 AM Good news to all adventure seekers, another park featuring a zip line that would surely test your courage and a cable ride is opening soon (or is it open already?). I myself have not visited the place yet but I'm 100% sure, it would be a hit once completed. Got some pictures from a friend.
I'll find some time to visit the place myself. :)

langyaw August 8th, 2010, 09:39 AM ^^ alarming indeed. For me, even without the LGPMS study, we can readily see with our eyes the state of our city. If you would look at how our economy is doing here, we really need more development. Looking at the three poverty stricken barangays of Tambacan, Saray and Villaverde; there is little development as far as social aspect is concerned. No jobs, less opportunities, and more vices.
I wonder if our mayor really reads stuff such as this study or could he be blind? we do not just address our city government's fiscal health but the social needs of our city as well!
TONZI, it's sad, but there's a saying, "the people get the politician they deserve.":ohno:
wen lagi ka modagan pagka mayor? I hereby nominate TONZI for Iligan City Mayor! any second? :cheers2:

According to the NSCB Fact Sheet for PNP Regional Office 10 showed the crime rate in Northern Mindanao continually declined in the last (7) seven years. Crime tends to be concentrated in HUCs with Iligan City being the highest followed by Cagayan de Oro. However, amidst the relatively higher crime rates, Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro recorded higher crime solution efficiency. Iligan is second only to Camiguin in terms of the least number of Policemen.

There are a few words here and there I can understand although maybe I can not tie them all together in a sentence. Hey, if I listen long enough I'll learn a few more and a few more. The recorded items on your web page can be played over and over again.
What I do enjoy is being able to hear and see things " Live From Iligan " which a couple of decades ago would have been nearly impossible, at least not with the ease and convienience we have with the Internet these days.
There is a 12 hour difference in time between us so the best time for me to listen is probably the weekends !

We can see how Copenhagen transformed itself into one of the most livable cities in the world by creating car-free zones and reducing speeds in key areas. These changes were good for the city's residents, good for the environment, and (surprisingly, to some business owners) good for business too!
I really like what they did in their city. Imagine if we can replicate this in Iligan.

UNIVERSITIES and colleges from the southern Philippines joined the annual Visayas-Mindanao Debate Championship (VMDC) hosted by the Silliman University Debate Society last July 23 to 26 in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
A total of 65 debate teams and 35 adjudicators registered for the event.
The final four debate teams from Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU), Cebu Normal University (CNU), Ateneo de Zamboanga University (ADZU) and Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) argued on the issue that would allow ownership of the moon. Mara Barbra Nanaman and Ara Reyna Mamon of MSU-IIT were declared as tournament champions.
The winning team defended the collective interest of humanity in the preservation of the moon and opposed utilization of the moon for profit and private purposes.
In an interview, Nanaman said: “We were euphoric. MSU-IIT has been dreaming about winning since then, and we can't believe we find ourselves being in the championship.”
Hailed as Tournament Best Speaker is Gian Marlon Libot of Xavier University and Tournament Best Adjudicator is Alvin Clyde Gregorio of Silliman University.
“This recognition is a validation of the fact that even if adjudicating is perceived as secondary to debating, it is in fact not because effective adjudicating also requires in-depth debate analysis, and sound and comparative judgment”, Gregorio said.
Representatives from the University of Bohol, Foundation University and St. Paul University-Dumaguete competed in this year’s tournament for the first time.
“VMDC 2010 is a success. This year’s tournament is biggest VMDC to date,” Espino said.

DIYANDI FESTIVAL SA ILIGAN
Folklore depicts Iligan's patron saint, St. Michael the Archangel as the protector of peace. During the 70's, at the height of the secessionist hostilities in Mindanao, people believed that Iligan remained untouched and safe from rebel attacks because of the miracles of St. Michael.
One evening, when a hostile group was poised to attack Iligan City, the members retreated because they could not find the city as it was transformed into a lake. Another story told is that the Patron Saint makes his rounds in the evening as evidenced by amorseko grass on his clothes and muddy boots.
These are just a few of the many stories about St. Michael. Even the story of his installation as patron saint of Iligan continues to inspire and endear him to each and every Iliganon.
Thus, his feast every 29th of september, is a grand celebration in Iligan. In fact, it has transformed into a month-long festival, the DIYANDI FESTIVAL SA ILIGAN.
Diyandi is a ritual performed by an all-female group portraying the courtship between the Maranao male and Higaonon female and offering this union and agricultural harvest to the Catholic Saint Michael the Archangel. Diyandi captures and mirrors the peaceful co-existence of Iligan's tri-people: Maranao Muslims, Higaonons and Christians. This ritual is performed during the 'Pagpakanaug" before the start of every novena, before the start of the stage play Comedia and before the procession of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

(boy decena)

This ritual is performed during the 'Pagpakanaug" before the start of every novena, before the start of the stage play Comedia and before the procession of the Nuestra Señora del Rosario.

uonno August 12th, 2010, 05:09 AM I wish you could come up with a design that is *not* related to a religious activity so it can be worn anytime of the year without appearing outdated, and also be worn by other members who are not interested in the festivities.:)
if I like the design, I just might buy one for myself, too.:cheers2:

Cencia na @Langyaw, I just design that coz it was mention in the thread about the shirt and is about Diyandi thats why I came up with that design. But if you want I can design another one pero hindi ko pa alam kng ano ang e design kng hindi base sa diyandi.

Ang pagkakaalam ko, "kasadya festival" refers to the street dancing and merrymaking only. Pero ang daming mga celebrations aside from the street dancing sa buong buwan ng Setyembre. That's why from Kasadya, it has transformed into a month-long festival called the "Diyandi Festival sa Iligan". Kasadya now is just a part of the whole Diyandi Festival. Same with Komedya de San Miguel, Pagpakanaug, etc. :)
uonno August 12th, 2010, 06:51 AM Ic. So basically Diyandi is not about the San Miguel who protect the city from harm. Diyandi festival should focus on how patron saint San Miguel came to Iligan and protect not courtship of different tirbes. BEcause when you talk about a certain festival dapat may pinagmulan just like the santo nino.just my hint.Nway thanks sa info Sir A.

TONZI August 12th, 2010, 11:00 AM Ic.
On my opinion and based on a research in college. Many old folks of Iligan don't have a name for the patron saint's celebration but instead call it fiesta lang. And Kasadya was only conceived in the 1980s as a name for the event until it came up with a streetdancing competition. To make things clear, only the JAYCEEs had the hand in calling the celebration as Kasadya while the city government calls it "Fiesta and Tourism Month Celebration".
In 2004, since many celebrations have been sprouting all over the country. Cebu has SInulog, Davao has Kadayawan, Iloilo has Dinagyang and many others, Iligan on its own still has no celebration that has historical and cultural significance that it can call its own.
Kasadya is not really unique to Iligan because it only means "bibo" or "sadya" and aside from that, it is only used for "commerciality" for the Jaycees. Tacloban City has its "KASADYAAN/KASADYAHAN PINTADOS FESTIVAL" and with such, we can really state for a fact that Kasadya is not unique with almost the same name with that of Tacloban's. If Sinulog has the dance called from the current of the river in old Cebu which is danced in praise for the Sto. Nino, then, Iligan afterall should have its own. And many research would only point to "DIYANDI".
MSUIIT's world-renowned resident dance and stagecraft company, IPAG, with its creative director Steven Patrick Fernandez, did a study on the DIYANDI Dance before the city's celebration is renamed Diyandi back in 2004. He did his research way back in the late 80s or early 90s. Another IIT cultural troupe, THE KALIMULAN DANCE TROUPE, with its creative director, Prof. Christian Aguado, also concurs to what is deserving to be called of Iligan's celebration.
And our research in linguistics in college, which sought to find out the words used in chants at the Kasadya Streetdancing, also found out that most of the old folks refer to the celebration of St. Michael as "mag-Diyandi" or to mean "to celebrate".
The Diyandi is danced everytime the image of St. Michael is put down from his altar in "pagpakanaug". It goes the same when the image is put up the altar in "pagpasaka". And more to that, the old folks Dance the Diyandi all throughout the early morning every day in the city after the pagpakanaug. The dancers of this dance are all native to Iligan. Be they be maranao, coastal dweller (Iliganon) or hinterlander (Higaunon); all of them refer to this celebration as "Diyandi". There was never a word "Kasadya" mentioned in their statements. If one would only read the manuscripts of the songs of the Diyandi dancers, there is no "Kasadya",The Diyandi is.
The significance of this dance to Sr. San Miguel is seen on how the Diyandi dancers revel to the image everytime his feast comes. His "religious tales" and "legends" are spread throughout by the Diyandi revellers. His "heroism" and his "miracles" have spread from the word of mouth since the early times. That is how Sr. San Miguel is significant to the old Iliganons who dance the Diyandi. The one @uonno said that "the San Miguel who protects the city from harm" is in fact a thought of the old Iliganons who believe in the "religious tales" of Sr. San Miguel. As what the folks believe, Sr. San Miguel won't come down the altar if they do not dance the Diyandi. There are even beliefs that San Miguel won't come down or is heavy to carry which meant that he is mad or not happy. After they danced, it is only the time that the image is "light to carry". One dancer even told that once this happened with a dozen men to put him down but the image was so "heavy" and that after they danced, the image was only put down by only four or five men. On hearing these stories, only one will realize the significance of the Diyandi dance to the whole celebration.
Of course the "yawa yawa", "eskrima" and the "San Miguel Comedia" are "stagecrafts" that have been culturally unique to Iligan as they portray the triumph of good against evil. Be it known that the DIyandi dancers, "eskrima dancers" and the San Miguel comedia performers are all descendants of the Zalsos family who have branched out to other family names due to marriages. To name a few of these family names are the Nanaman, Actub, Iglupas, Jariol, Llauder, Obach, Ramiro, Lacuna, Madrazo and many others. They are the family that is notably to be called "lumads" of this city as their family history dates back to the 15th century.
Before the pagpakanaug, the celebration starts with a "halad", "alay" or "offering" which is in native such as an "egg", "live chicken", "salt" and many others that is worthy to offer.
One more clarification, the DIyandi is never an inter-marriage or courtship dance. Ask Prof. Aguado regarding this and he will tell you it is not a courtship dance.
When the old Iliganons celebrate the feast of St. Micheal, they would call it "diyandi". As in, "mag-diyandi ta kay anaa na si Sr. San Miguel!"...
I hope this one makes it clear for everyone..
uonno August 12th, 2010, 11:40 AM Thank you very much for th info and it really help a lot in understanding the real story of Diyandi. At least alam ko na yung real meaning ng diyandi. Thanks for the effort and magdiyandi na ta.
g0Rs August 12th, 2010, 01:30 PM MSU- IIT College of Education (CED) awarded Center of Excellence (COE) for Teacher Education by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED)
The MSU- IIT College of Education (CED) is overwhelmed after being awarded Center of Excellence (COE) for Teacher Education by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).
The MSU-IIT CED is the only COE recipient in Region X and one of only twelve institutions in the Philippines during the July 16, 2010 awarding ceremonies.
CHED Chairman, Dr. Emmanuel Y. Angeles presented the award in ceremonies last July 16, 2010 at the Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development for Teacher Education in Quezon City. Receiving the award were Dr. Arnulfo P. Supe, Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, Dr. Lydie D. Paderanga, former CED Dean and now OIC of the Registrar’s Office, and Prof. Esmar N. Sedurifa, current CED OIC-Dean.
http://msuiit.edu.ph/images/news/web/ced/2010/ced-coe-2010.jpg
Through the efforts of Paderanga, the CED applied for the award last year and this quest continued with Sedurifa’s administration.
Prof. Sedurifa was ecstatic in her praises citing the vital role of the cooperation of her college. She adds that the COEs/CODs may become a resource to strengthen other schools in their localities to become centers of graduate education and research and to strengthen other non-COE/COD Teacher Education Programs.
Meanwhile, the CHED Technical Panel for Teacher Education in the secondary and elementary levels evaluated the qualifications of CED last June 15, 2010. Among the members of the panel were Dr. Paz I. Lucido, Dr. Brenda B. Corpuz, Dr. Amor D. de Torres, Dr. Gladys C. Nivera, and Ms. Rosa F. Mercado.
The CED has been accredited with a Level II rating by the AACCUP in the Secondary Education Program. On-going is the Level III and Level I accreditation process for the college’s Elementary Education Program.

for a very good treatise on the subject, read what a pro says on the matter. Ken Rockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig.htm).
the bottom line is, as he aptly says:
"Neither is better on an absolute basis. The choice depends on your application. Once you know your application the debate goes away. The debate only exists when people presume erroneously that someone else's needs mirror their own."
ergo, eat de pens :)
be observant of how better shooters' do it.

(boy decena)

bentong August 18th, 2010, 08:29 AM for a very good treatise on the subject, read what a pro says on the matter. Ken Rockwell (http://www.kenrockwell.com/tech/filmdig.htm).
the bottom line is, as he aptly says:
"Neither is better on an absolute basis. The choice depends on your application. Once you know your application the debate goes away. The debate only exists when people presume erroneously that someone else's needs mirror their own."
ergo, eat de pens :)
be observant of how better shooters' do it.
critique your own work, and improve on it.
there is no end to learning :cheers2:
A debate on which is better, the film or digital, is pointless. But knowing the context of the statements could shed some light on the actual matters referred to.
Just by looking at how a film photographer's face turn upon seeing the results of his hard work can tell you the difference between shooting for fun and shooting for the sake of real art and living. The statements are not about which is better, they're about purpose.
It's a common practice nowadays that amateurs and hobbyists use DSLR since they can take hundreds of photos in one go, immediately see the results and improve on their flaws. If they do it on films, that would be a waste of time, money and effort. Photographers always have the options in selecting their cameras. But purpose is something one should consider in the first place. :)

iliganon Boy August 20th, 2010, 04:12 PM Bring out the halo-halo
by Ed Biado
You kinda saw that coming, didn't you? I mean, it's obviously only a matter of time before The Daily 10 comes out with a halo-halo edition. It's a classic Filipino dessert-slash-snack and it's one of the best, if not the best, things to help us survive the heat. Everyone has their own favorite recipe—some like it with everything while others like it minimalist and still others simply aren't too fond with an ingredient or two. Well, fellow halo-halo lover, we got you hooked up. Here, according to wikipilipinas.org, are some of the top shaved-ice-milk-and-whatnot preparations in and around the city:
1. Razon’s—An almost all-yellow preparation, the halo-halo at Razon's is one of those that are considered minimalist. There's no colorful gulaman and sago. It's just saging na saba, macapuno and leche flan. Boring much? Definitely not! In fact, the subtle combination is a big hit all over town; many are actually calling it THE best.
2. Chow King—Ah, our very own localized version of Chinese cuisine in fast food form! Chow King's halo-halo is very Filipino but is distinguished to be one of the few that's served upside down. Traditional halo-halo has all the ingredients, save for the leche flan, ube and, when included, ice cream on top. But this one has everything on top, and by everything, we mean the works! And, they deliver right to your doorstep!
3. The Peninsula Manila—From WikiPilipinas: “The Peninsula Manila has a specialty called the Halo Halo Harana. Served in a large bowl, the halo-halo has gained fame after being featured in Time Magazine. It has the whole gamut of usual halo-halo ingredients, but in enormous and sometimes even excessive proportions. According to Time, the Peninsula Manila’s Halo Halo Harana is the top legal way to get high in Asia.”
4. Icebergs—The halo-halo variation from Icebergs makes use of food items you don't normally find in a halo-halo. They have peaches and cornflakes to substitute the regular ingredients. They call it Halo-Halo Parfait.
5. Milky Way—WikiPilipinas says that it's the perfect measurement of ingredients that make the Milky Way halo-halo a top contender. It's all about achieving the delicate balance of flavors, which, we have to admit, is not a consideration at all for many other vendors, especially those in your neighborhood street corner
6. Zoey Cafe—Located in Iligan City, this espresso place is, according to some sources, one of the best venues for halo-halo. If you're ever there, make a quick stop to see if you agree.
7. Dear Manok—A variety of bloggers confirm that Dear Manok's Buko Halo-Halo is a must-try. This chicken joint in Cagayan De Oro serves their halo-halo in a coconut, with the flesh intact. When you're done with all the sweetness, cap the meal by scraping off and munching on the fresh coconut meat.
8. Red Bean Halowich—This Boracay spot is famous for its gigantic Family Size Halowich Special—which, as the name explicitly states, is a huge (enormous, in fact) serving of halo-halo in an equally monstrous bowl. Five scoops of ice cream, mango puree, cornflakes, beans, mango, watermelon; it's a freaking adventure all on its own.
9. Katigbing—In Pampanga, the battle for halo-halo supremacy rages on everyday. Razon's always is top-of-mind, but Katigbing, Arayat's answer to Razon's, may have some aces up their sleeve. Kapampangan halo-halo prides itself in its simplicity and this one is no different. It contains nothing more than mashed white kidney beans, sweet corn kernels and carabao milk paste (haleyang gatas ng kalabaw).
10. Aling Taleng’s—This unassuming little place in Pagsanjan, Laguna has been in the business since 1933. The famous seven-ingredient recipe has been handed down through the generations. Their halo-halo has never changed the way it's made. And it still works.

The Alaska Aces kept their date with destiny by posting a 102-88 victory over the San Miguel Beermen to win the 2010 Philippine Basketball Association Fiesta Conference championship at the Araneta Coliseum last Wednesday.
We won 12 titles before but this 13th PBA title is the sweetest because it was so hard to win. We had to scramble from the start. Then we had to beat Ginebra. Then it was Talk n Text in seven games. This is so special considering those great teams, those great coaches. It is so sweet to win, said Alaska coach Tim Cone.
In the process the Aces won their 13th PBA title tying the record of the storied Crispa Redmanizers. The Beermen, who joined the PBA a decade ahead of Alaska, still lead the league with the most PBA championships with 18 titles.
Mick Pennisi drained back-to-back triples to push the Beermen within nine points of the Alaska lead, 93-84, with still 4:29 to go in the game. But Diamon Simpson (201-F-87, college: St.Mary's, CA) hit a pair of crucial baskets to tow the Aces to victory.
Simpson had another dominant performance scoring 28 points, grabbing 19 rebounds, tallying five blocks, issuing three assists and coming up with one steal.
He (Simpson) is the one guy no else had an answer for, said coach Tim. He is young, he is energetic. They just did not have an answer for him.
Cyrus Baguio had 24 markers to go with three rebounds and two steals.
Cyrus is just scratching the surface of his potential, said coach Tim. He is still not doing the little things like using a screen well. He is getting by on sheer athleticism. The triangle offense is built for him and the sky is the limit as to how good he can become.
Joe Devance scored 14 points, grabbed four rebounds, had one assist and one steal.
LA Tenorio had 12 markers, 11 assists and six rebounds.
The key to the series was the maturation of Joe and LA, said coach Tim. Joe is actually our leading local scorer. His contributions cannot be underestimated. He certainly does not get enough credit.
Sonny Thoss - back in the starting lineup after Tony Dela Cruz woke up Tuesday morning with sore eyes - scored 12 points and grabbed 10 rebounds.
We put Sonny back in the starting lineup, said coach Tim. Then lo and behold, we got off to a good start, taking the lead early. We were forced to make adjustments which worked.
Mark Borboran had six markers, five rebounds, one assist, one steal and one block.
Larry Fonacier drained a pair of triples to tally six points, grabbed three rebounds and issued two assists.
Reynel Hugnatan, bumped heads with the San Miguel bigs a couple of times en route to grabbing four rebounds.
The Aces dominated the boards, grabbing 57 rebounds compared to only 47 by San Miguel.
The Aces had more free throws, converting 18 of 24 attempts compared to the Beermen who converted 10 of 13 attempts.
Baguio and Tenorio shared the award of the Finals Most Valuable Player.
Simpson scored on a follow up from underneath the ring as time expired to push Alaska to a nine-point lead after the first quarter, 28-19.
Joseph Yeo drilled a long triple to cut the Aces lead to only four points, 44-40. But Simpson converted a jumper to go with a pair of free throws by Borboran as Alaska posted a comfortable eight-point cushion, 48-40, at halftime.
The Aces first erected their biggest lead of 14 points, 41-27, with 7:07 to go in the second period after Baguio drained a triple followed by an undergoal stab.
The scores:
Alaska 102 - Diamon Simpson 28, Cyrus Baguio 24, Joe Devance 14, LA Tenorio 12, Sonny Thoss 12, Mark Borboran 6, Larry Fonacier 6, Topex Robinson 0, Reynel Hugnatan 0, Jeff Cariaso 0.
San Miguel 88 - Gabe Freeman 32, Arwind Santos 16, Mick Pennisi 12, Alex Cabagnot 7, Jay Washington 5, Danny Ildefonso 5, Denok Miranda 4, Dondon Hontiveros 4, Joseph Yeo 3, Dorian Pena 0.
Quarter scores: 28-19, 52-44, 77-64, 102-88.

RML August 25th, 2010, 08:06 AM ^^Welcome back @RML :)
Thanks, gORs. :)
I have actually never been gone -- been lurking once in a while, albeit not as frequent as it used to be. Was also just too tired posting... My files were all gone -- my uncle erased everything I saved on his account. I thought I created one for my own using my own name, but I forgot the password, so I'm back to his account.
They're going to transfer?
Yes; they're moving out. They feel the actual showroom is becoming too small for their requirement. Their sales have gone up. In fact, their sales are larger than that of CdO's, according to an insider. I'm hoping Hundai will follow soon. And, if this isn't too ambitious, one or two Japanese car manufacturers such as Honda and Toyota.
Malapit na ang fiesta. Sana magiging masaya ang celebration.
jcbroken August 26th, 2010, 07:46 PM Gunmen stop bus in Lanao del Norte, kill 4
MANILA, Philippines (AP) – Gunmen wearing police uniforms stopped a passenger bus in the southern Philippines early Thursday and fatally shot four people, including two police marshals, officials said.
The attack came just three days after a disgruntled ex-policeman took hostage a busload of Hong Kong tourists in Manila, killing eight of them before he was shot dead by a police sniper.
Police said the bus attacked Thursday was traveling from Cagayan de Oro to Zamboanga city in the southern Philippines — where Muslim rebels and criminal gangs operate — when it was flagged down at a road checkpoint by gunmen in police uniforms.
They ordered the passengers to get off and then fatally shot four people, including two uniformed police marshals, said Orlando Vinas, the Lanao del Norte provincial police chief.
Vinas said the marshals were deployed on regional buses plying the same highway after gunmen early this month held up a bus to extort money from passengers.
Highway robberies are common in the country's south, where the proliferation of illegal firearms and weak law enforcement have fueled the Muslim separatist insurgency and instability for decades.

uonno August 31st, 2010, 02:48 AM Good Morning Iligan. Sana lang they(SM) occupy all the area of pryce para mas malaki, may sapat na parking at maganda ang SM City Iligan. At Sana din if SM will be push through, hope they will make it a point that they will have a water treatment facility before they throw the water to the river. Make it environmental friendly and also hope they will make into consideration making SM City Iligan an environmental friendly like putting a park or gardens, and this will be very a big difference from other SM.

RML August 31st, 2010, 03:57 AM That story about SM buying Price property is pretty unusual for the giant developer, because what they usually do is buy undeveloped land and turn it into a commercial hub. They're usually attracted to huge land sizes so they can design their area freely. Price property in Tubod isn't that big so it makes me wonder what kind of business will they put in it. Maybe it wouldn't be a mall but just a supermarket/grocery store -- similar to the one they plan to build in Lim Kit Kai Center, which is also more realistic to think at this point in time. But I'm glad Iligan is on their radar. Hope things will go on as mapped out by SMPI. Keeping my fingers crossed as well. Good luck!

oninBadz August 31st, 2010, 07:53 AM hopefully soon Iligan City LGU can convince/invite our shipping operators to bring back the night sailing time from Iligan to Cebu as it was not so long time ago.we have been an extension route of Ozamiz which is serviced by Cokaliong,Cebu Ferries and now cargo-only service of Gothong Lines.other cities who now enjoys good sailing schedules and frequencies are Ozamiz and Surigao.most of it was by way of an invitation from their Local Govt.to enter their city's capability for pax load factor.
and hopefully same goes with our airline service.iligan is one of the few cities in NORMIN without it's operational airport service.our airport is still technically good and has been refitted enough to receive turbo-prop aircrafts.the only thing is the security issues around the area and a little push from our ever active mayor and congressman.
Iligan should be accessible to attract more visitors not extension visits only.for now Iligan's access by sea is by way of Ozamiz(from cebu)and some other city when coming from manila.by plane, visitors can now choose either CDO,Ozamiz and some wildcard which is Pagadian.
from the east which is Surigao City-Gingoog City-Cagayan De Oro-Iligan City-Ozamiz City-Oroquieta City-Dipolog City only 3 cities are dependent in terms of transportation access, and that includes our Iligan which is by far in terms of income is in high level.Hope our LGU can do something about this if they really want more tourist in our city.:)

unfortunately none.all the ships serving Iligan from Cebu goes to Ozamiz first then Iligan arriving 9am,it's like an extension to the Ozamiz route.same goes with the Manila based ferries,NENACO have many stop-overs before Iligan while ATS(Superferry)would usually take CDO first or Ozamiz before going to Iligan.

the real score was Cebu Ferry 1 which was assigned in CBU-CDO route had been added with a 3rd deck that's why OLO Rule which was the CBU-OZA ship was re-routed to CDO and the vessel assigned in Iligan before which was OLO Mount Carmel was also re-routed to CBU-OZA.meanwhile CBU-SUR and NAS has retained their Cebu Ferry 2.actually Iligan became the sacrificial route and it's been 2weeks now that Cebu Ferry 1 resumed her operation but had the OLO Mount Carmel resumed CBU-ILGN too?

aʟвeяτ cuιɴo August 31st, 2010, 05:16 PM I finally had the chance to visit the NPC Nature Park last Sunday, August 29. Here are a few photos I took during that day. :)
We saw some animals and a couple of flowers. The flow of the Agus river is simply a sight to behold--even at that time the water flowing from Maria Cristina waterfalls was just at "half-strength" as only one stream of water was seen flowing down.
And of course the main attraction, the zip line, was amazing! Three zip line rides (at only Php200!) is a steal.

TONZI September 1st, 2010, 04:45 AM I'LL JUST POST THIS RELEVANT NEWS REGARDING THE 16 CONTROVERSIAL CITIES IN THE CONTROVERSIAL CONGRESS BILL..
SC: It’s a final no to 16 new cities
By Nikko Dizon
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 01:48:00 08/28/2010
VOTING 7-6 with two justices abstaining, the Supreme Court has reversed itself anew in the controversial case of 16 cityhood laws, this time reinstating its 2008 decision that declared these laws unconstitutional.
In a 16-page decision penned by Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, the Court said that a tie-vote on the second motion for reconsideration cannot reverse the Nov. 18, 2008, decision of the high tribunal on the case.
Aside from Carpio, those who voted in favor of reinstating the 2008 decision were Justices Conchita Carpio-Morales, Arturo Brion, Diosdado Peralta, Martin Villarama Jr., Jose Mendoza and Maria Lourdes Sereno.
Dissenter
Justice Presbitero Velasco Jr., who penned the 2009 ruling that reversed the 2008 decision, wrote a dissenting opinion.
He was joined by Chief Justice Renato Corona and Justices Teresita Leonardo-de Castro, Lucas Bersamin, Roberto Abad and Jose Perez.
Those who took no part in the voting were Justices Antonio Nachura and Mariano del Castillo.
The Nov. 18, 2008, decision declared the cityhood laws unconstitutional and denied a March 31, 2009, motion for reconsideration filed by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).
“These priority majority actions of the court en banc can only be overruled by a new majority vote, not a tie-vote because a tie-vote cannot overrule a prior affirmative action,” the high court said in its latest decision, promulgated on Aug. 24.
Tedious
The Supreme Court, by a split-vote of 6-6, denied a second motion for reconsideration on April 28, 2009.
Subsequently, the November 2008 ruling became final and executory and recorded in the Book of Entries of Judgement on May 21, 2009.
“However, shortly thereafter, it was realized that there were still pending unresolved motions. Hence, in the resolution of pending motions, the court, on Dec. 21, 2009, reversed its Nov. 18, 2008, decision,” the Supreme Court said in a press statement Friday.
The majority said the denial of the second motion for reconsideration by a split vote, “inevitably rendered the [Nov. 18, 2008] decision final.”
Declared as unconstitutional were the city status of Baybay in Leyte, Bogo in Cebu, Catbalogan in Samar, Tandag in Surigao del Sur, Lamitan in Basilan, Borongan in Samar, Tayabas in Quezon, Tabuk in Kalinga, Bayugan in Agusan del Sur, Batac in Ilocos Norte, Mati in Davao Oriental, Guihulngan in Negros Oriental, Cabadbaran in Agusan del Norte, El Salvador in Misamis Oriental, Carcar in Cebu and Naga in Cebu.
No other interpretation
In reaffirming the original decision of the Supreme Court, the justices reiterated that the Constitution “expressly provides that no city shall be created except in accordance with the criteria established in the local government code.”
“This provision can only be interpreted in one way,” said the latest Supreme Court decision.
“Clearly, the cityhood laws contravene the letter and intent of … the Constitution,” it said.
The justices also said Congress “exceeded and abused its law-making power.”
In his dissenting opinion, however, Velasco said he found the decision “rather startling.”
Velasco insisted that exemptions from requirements of cityhood are allowed by the Constitution.
Mayors thankful
Officers of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) on Friday hailed the Supreme Court decision.
“The League of Cities of the Philippines is thankful to the members of the Supreme Court who opted to observe the Constitution, judicial precedents and the law concerning conversion of municipalities into cities,” City of San Fernando Mayor Oscar Rodriguez, the LCP president, said.
“The last bulwark of democracy has spoken,” said Angeles City Mayor Edgardo Pamintuan, the LCP public relations officer.

pag sure, oi. hehehe joke lang
Seriously, your mom couldn't be the broker for both companies. It's either she's the broker for Price or SM, but not for both. Other wise, it would have been quite easy for her to manipulate the deal and everything would have been done right from the start, because there isn't to be brokering anymore. My wild guess is that she's brokering for Price. :)

g0Rs September 2nd, 2010, 02:13 PM Anyway, I regret to inform you guys that there won't be a fireworks competition on Sept, 17-20, only an exhibition. The organizers had to make last minute changes today after the mayor of this city withdrew the pledged 200T yesterday (September 1).
According to my source, they could have raised the money for the event if only the mayor (through the city tourism office) informed them earlier. It's just really upsetting. The organizers did not ask for any sponsorship in the first place. The govt. offered to help. Ingon ana ka bastos! :bash:

g0Rs September 3rd, 2010, 02:54 PM Feature: Diyandi Festival sa Iligan 2010 beckons as major event of year (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p100902.htm&no=59)
by Lorry V. Gabule
PIA
Iligan City (2 September) -- The San Miguel Fiesta, in honor of the city's Patron Saint Michael the Archangel every 29th September is undoubtedly the most colorful yearly event in Iligan.
Various activities have been lined up to ensure the lively festivities of the upcoming celebration, showcasing the many wonderful attractions that Iligan offers as the city launched today, September 1, the beginning of its month-long fiesta activity.
Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz of lligan said it will be a Tourism Month celebration considering we have launched also the 'Bring Home a Friend Program' of the Department of Tourism in July this year.
We see to it that the traditional fiesta celebration will not be overly extravagant, and we intend to involve the different sectors in our community, the Iliganons, getting a natural high of being able to contribute to the development of the city, expressed Mayor Cruz.
The celebration is highlighted by traditional event, the "Pagpakanaug" on September 20, the lowering of the Patron Saint from its pedestal on the side of the main altar, to another pedestal for its yearly change of costumes, is a sight to behold and a tradition unparalleled.
Although conducted inside the Cathedral, the Pagpakanaug is spearheaded by devotees and participated in by local government officials whereby the city mayor receives the Patron Saint's helmet; the congressman receives the spear and the chief of police, San Miguel's shield.
All this occurs with a ritual and a specific count amidst thunderous chants of Viva Senor San Miguel, participated in by thousands of devotees paying tribute to the defender of their faith.
The "Procession" and street celebration on September 29, the Feast Day, at 7:00 in the morning, is attended by throngs of devotees in all assortments of costumes and masks.
Higaonons, angels, Diyandis, Devil and Angels dance, prance and shout in mock battle celebrating the confrontation of Senor San Miguel and Luzbel (Lucifer). Every now and then during the procession, the devotees shout fiercely and forcefully.
Other cultural groups of Iligan, the Maranaos and Higaonons, participate in the feast with the Christian community.
This is evident in the Diyandi, a dance ritual performed by an all-female group showing the courtship between a Maranao male and Higaonon female and culminating in an offering, symbolic of their union and harvest to St. Michael.
The beautiful imagery that the ritual conjures, which aptly describes the peaceful co-existence of the Muslims, Higaonons and Christians of Iligan, gave birth to the 'Diyandi Festival sa lligan'.
In the morning of September 27 will be the world-wide known Kasadya Street Dancing. And there will be parade of beauties in the evening, with 12 lovely ladies vying for the crown of Miss Iligan 2010, at the Mindanao State University-Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) gymnasium.
Erlito C. Dalangin, over-all chairman of Diyandi Festival Sa lligan 2010, said they invited sports enthusiasts on boxing, basketball, bowling, volleyball, badminton, football, golf, Frisbees and swimming to join the challenge which will start on September 8, so with the motor cross, mountain bike downhill race, and shooting competition.
This year's fiesta celebration bears the theme, "Wara-wara sa lligan, Tara Na!," Dalangin disclosed.
EdmundX September 3rd, 2010, 10:54 PM Maayo unta naa na ang SM sa Iligan para daghan na investors pud na muanha diha sa atong pinalanggang lugar.
Alingatong September 4th, 2010, 05:57 AM Aboitiz feed unit to build new plant
The feed production arm of the Aboitiz group of companies is looking at building a new plant to expand capacity, an executive said late on Thursday.
Pilmico Foods Corp.’s Tarlac and Lanao del Norte feed production centers are expected to reach full capacity by 2012. "So we will have to decide where to build by next year," Pilmico Foods President and Chief Executive Sabin M. Aboitiz told reporters.
Mr. Aboitiz said the company wants to build a new feed milling plant near waterways for faster and cheaper transport of animal feeds.
In July, Pilmico Foods completed the P120-million upgrade of its feed milling plant in Iligan in Lanao del Norte. Pilmico Foods, the unlisted feed, flour and hog production unit of the Aboitiz Group, increased the feed milling capacity of its Iligan plant by 10,000 metric tons (MT) from about 100,000 MT per year of capacity.
Pilmico Foods started the commercial operations of the P400-million Iligan feed mill in 2008.
Profits of Pilmico Foods -- which is also into swine production in 18 farms in Tarlac, most of which are subcontracted to farmers -- jumped by 125% to P867 million in the first half.
Meanwhile, the company wants to join if there is a re-bidding for San Miguel Corp.’s 49% stake in San Miguel Pure Foods Co., Inc. But Mr. Aboitiz said the group wants only the flour and feed production of Pure Foods, which owns the Purefoods, Magnolia, Monterey, Star, San Mig Coffee, and B-Meg brands.
He added that the Aboitiz group, which joined the bidding in July, wants a majority stake.
Late last month, San Miguel dropped plans to sell the stake in its food unit over differences in the amount of shares to be sold.
The final bidders -- said to be Gokongwei-led Universal Robina Corp. and a partnership between the Campos family of Del Monte Pacific Ltd. and the Century Pacific Group of Companies -- had sought 100% ownership of Pure Foods, but San Miguel was willing to sell only up to 49%.
Shares in Aboitiz Equity Ventures, Inc., the holding firm of the Aboitiz group, closed P0.20 higher at P22.20 each on Friday. -- Neil Jerome C. Morales

ABOITIZ-LED Pilmico Foods Corp. has just increased the feed milling capacity of its plant in Iligan but is already considering whether it should gear up for another round of expansion.
“Probably by 2012 we may be at almost 90 percent capacity,” Pilmico president and CEO Sabin M. Aboitiz said in a briefing, referring to the expanded Iligan feedmill.
He said the growth would come from improved feed sales and demand from the company’s own swine business.
“We will make a decision next year if we should prepare for additional capacity for 2013,” Aboitiz said.
Pilmico completed the P120-million expansion of its Iligan feed mill last July. This involved the construction of a second production line.
The new production line has an estimated annual capacity of 115,000 metric tons, increasing total production by 94 percent.
The food manufacturing business contributed about 8 percent of the income of Aboitiz Equity Ventures and helped push profitability despite challenges in the group’s transport business.
For the first half of 2010, Pilmico and its subsidiaries contributed P867 million to AEV’s income, up by 125 percent year on year. The AEV group booked P14.33 billion in net income for the first six months of the year

g0Rs September 5th, 2010, 03:57 PM We stand before the dawn of a new IIT.
Iligan Institute of Technology National University
FAQ 1: Why convert?
* It is high time for IIT to become a full-fledged University on the following grounds:
1. MSU-IIT has long reached a level of accomplishments and development to deserve becoming a full-fledged and independent university.
2. It has a proven capability to be the national university in southern Philippines comparative to UP, which can provide Southern Philippines quality, state of the art education and help answer demands for globally-competitive human resources.
FAQ 2: What kind of university do we want?
* A distinct national university similar to UP in Southern Philippines which will have the following features:
1. Headed by a President
2. Separate and smaller BOR but still headed by the CHED Chair
3. Fast decision making
4. Authority to offer market-driven and non-traditional cutting-edge courses that will spur development in Southern Philippines
5. A bigger budget share for Higher Education
6. Access to quality and state of the art education for the Mindanaoans
7. A Research University as clearly stipulated in the proposed bill
8. Can apply for a land grant
9. Retention of all existing privileges of personnel
FAQ 3: What are the disadvantages of being a part of the MSUS?
* Being a part of the MSU System has to a great extent slowed down IIT's full development
1. Proposals for new and innovative programs are always evaluated in terms of the implementing capabilities of other units, many of which are far behind IIT
2. Additional layers of decision-making in the system unnecessarily delay implementation of plans, programs and projects. For example, a simple curriculum revision designed to be responsive to the challenges of the times would still need the approval of all the other ten campuses before these can be submitted to the Board of Regents for its consideration
3. MSU Marawi is regarded as the mother or main campus; IIT is just one of its units. Grants intended for the entire university usually end up only in MSU Marawi.
4. Being viewed as just one university, MSU is provided only one item each for important positions by Civil Service and DBM, e.g. Registrar, Librarian, Chief Security, PPD Director, Medical Director, HR Manager, etc. and all of these are given to MSU Marawi.
5. The Institute gets penalized for breaches of contracts with external agencies committed by faculty members in another campus.
6. Poor performance of other units of the MSU System has adverse effects on budget allocations, (e.g. normative funding) for the entire University System, including IIT.
7. Proposals for the offering of some new programs were obstructed.
8. Faculty promotions of faculty members for Associate Professorship and up have to be reviewed by MSU Marawi, which involves a very long process.
9. Being part of MSU, IIT has become vulnerable to the so-called "Marawi politics"
* Constricting bureaucratic procedures and policies, political interference
1. As a unit of MSU, we cannot apply for land grant
2. As an external campus cost center heads should only have a maximum salary grade of 18, thus existing items beyond 18 are classified as CT positions. This is the reason why the positions of Registrar, Librarian, Chief Security, PPD Director, Medical Director, HR Manager, IT Director were deleted in our plantilla of personnel. Being viewed as just one university, all these said positions are given to MSU Marawi.
3. Level of authority of the Chancellor in the MSUS Management Matrix is very limited since he can only sign contracts up to PhP 2M. All contracts beyond PhP 2M should be brought to Marawi for the signature of the President.
4. Contracts and MOAs have to be signed by the MSU President.
FAQ 4: Won’t we lose IIT’s privileges as part of MSU?
No, the bill ensures provisions to retain all these privileges currently enjoyed by IIT and its employees.
FAQ 5: Can we not upgrade while we are still a part of MSUS?
No! The problems of IIT are largely caused by the system governance and from the fact that campuses are of different levels and conditions of development. Policies proposed by IIT to address its needs are not approved because other campuses are unable to implement them. Curricular revisions, even just a change in course content in orderto be responsive to present needs, have to be approved by other campuses.
FAQ 6: Why change the name into IIT National University (IITNU)?
* To retain the name "IIT," which is a brand synonymous with quality, recognized not only nationally but also internationally.
* Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology in Australia, which was converted into a university after 123 years of existence, retained the name RMIT and became RMIT University. Also, Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT) retained its name instead of changing to Malayan University because of the value of the name.
FAQ 7: Won’t this move lead to the...
1. Disintegration ofthe MSU System? No. IIT is only one campus. MSUS has 10 other campuses with their own respective thrusts and strengths.
2. Localization/politicization of IIT? No.The proposed bill ensures that IIT will maintain not only its present character and stature but in fact aims to upgrade into the national university in southern Philippines. Also, the structure of the Board of Regents in the bill guarantees that governance is free from local politics.
3. Privatization/Commercialization of IIT? No.The bill stipulates that IIT will remain a state university, the mandate of which is to make quality education accessible and affordable to the people of southern Philippines.
4. Increase of Tuition and Other Fees? No. Increase in tuition is not automatic. Any increase in tuition and other fees will be done only after a thorough consultation with all sectors concerned, especially the students. This is enshrined in the bill. Moreover, the bill provides for scholarship programs and other affirmative action programs to assist poor but deserving students in all disciplines. IPs will be given preferential treatment.
5. Decrease in Salaries and Other Benefits? No. We are covered by the Salary Standardization Law. The bill ensures that there is no diminution in salaries and other benefits. In fact, the bill allows the granting of special allowances to ensure the retention of the most qualified personnel. The bill even assures additional funds to the new university, being national in scope as reflected in the title itself.
FAQ 8: Won’t this move affect Muslim-Christian relations?
* No. The move to an independent universityhood is a product of a growth and development process and therefore should not be viewed as anti-Muslim. In fact, IIT, among all other campuses of the MSUS is the most active in promoting peace and development, multiculturalism, and dialogue, through its Institute of Peace and Development for Mindanao (IPDM), and will remain so.
* IITNU will always continue to promote harmonious relationships among all peoples in Mindanao.
FAQ 9: What will be the benefits of the conversion to students?
1. Assured representation in the Board of Regents.
2. Equal access to quality, market-driven, and cutting-edge academic programs, e.g. Mechatronics, Bio-informatics, Animation, Film and Production, Communication Arts, Development Communication, Culinary Arts, etc.
3. More academic scholarships in all disciplines, e.g. Political Science, History, Accountancy, Education, Marketing, etc.
4. Faster implementation of curricular revisions.
5. With bigger budget, better facilities and more academic programs forthe students.
6. Better chances for poor but deserving students through scholarships and socialized tuition schemes.
7. IITNU will have its own distinct representations to inter-university/state competitions, fora, etc.
g0Rs September 5th, 2010, 04:01 PM Primer on House Bill No. 1743: This bill seeks to convert the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) in the City of Iligan into a national state university to be known as the Iligan Institute of Technology National University.
