Northern Mindanao scores high in exports (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/business/northern-mindanao-scores-high-exports)
Saturday, October 30, 2010

EXPORTS in northern Mindanao scores an overwhelming increase of 180 percent in the first half this year against last year, records from the regional National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) revealed.

The NEDA-Northern Mindanao said the region exported a total of US$269.34 million worth of products, 50 percent of which came from Misamis Oriental, the region's consistent dollar earner.

Next in rank was Lanao del Norte province, which captured 27.64 percent of the total exports.

Except for Camiguin, the rest of the provinces posted substantial growth in exports, indicating huge demand for local products abroad.

Misamis Occidental, though it contributed 11 percent of the total exports, marked the highest growth for the second quarter this year among other provinces, registering US$28.7 million, or a 23,842 percent increase from US$120,000 during the same period in 2009. This tremendous increase was brought about by the resumption of the operation of two oil mills and two frozen prawn processing plants located n the province.

Lanao del Norte's main export of crude coconut and cochin oil valued at US$94.29 million accounted for over a third of the total export earnings of the region.

Oleochemicals, another coconut-based product, was the second biggest export earner with US$55.71 million, or 20.68 percent of the regional total.

Fresh bananas landed third among the top 10 exports of the region, accounting for 21 percent of total growth. The surge in demand for bananas in the foreign market resulted in expansion of farm operations of some Davao-based companies located in Bukidnon such as Soriano Fruit Corporation, Stanfilco, DOLE Philippines (North Skyland Zone) and AMS Farming Corporation.

The value of the region's top 10 exports in the second quarter is almost fourfold its value in the same quarter last year while six of the 10 export commodities are now in double-digit figures, compared to only two figures in the previous comparable period.

By sector, coconut-based products remain the major export earning US$170.97 million, representing 63 percent of the regional total. This is followed by fresh fruits with 11 percent share of total exports.

Among the major export gainers are fresh fruits, with 586 percent, iron and steel with 500 percent and coconut-based products at 399 percent. Special transactions jumped at 1045 percent from $0.11 to 1.26 million. (Loui S. Maliza)

International riders to see action in Lanao del Norte motocross (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101027.htm&no=76)

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (27 October) -- Six international riders from the US, New Zealand, India and Sri Lanka have already confirmed their participation in the biggest motocross event the country has ever seen.

Among the motocross superstars set to see action in Lanao del Norte are Daniel Blair, Tiger Lacey, Ron De Jesus, James Robinson, Santosh C.S. and Gayan Sandaruwan.

The province of Lanao del Norte has been acclaimed by professional and amateur racers as the motocross capital of the Philippines.

Riders admire the international standard race course as being "very technical yet very safe."

"We are taking motocross to the next level. It's time for our local and national riders to pit their skills against these international riders and see how much we need to improve in this sport," Gov. Khalid Dimaporo said.

The provincial government is stepping up its promotional development with the vision of transforming Lanao del Norte into the sports Mecca of the country.

"We welcome all sports that need help. They have a home here in Lanao del Norte and that is the Mindanao Civic Center," Dimaporo added.

The December motocross event is the result of the continued partnership between the provincial LGU and SEL-J Sports. (VNL/PIO-LDN)

Lanao Norte intensifies anti-illegal logging campaign (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101014.htm&no=95)

Lanao Norte intensifies anti-illegal logging campaign

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (14 October) -- To preserve the abundant biodiversity and lush forest cover particularly in the interior municipalities of this province, Governor Khalid Dimaporo has ordered the concerned local agencies to step up its campaign against illegal logging.

"We need to significantly disable if not permanently dismantle the operations of these illegal loggers," urged Gov. Dimaporo.

The call was made during the coordination meeting held on October 11, 2010 at the Provincial Capitol Building, Pigcarangan, Tubod.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) ? Region 10 has identified 11 hotspot areas in the province. These are municipalities where illegal loggers are frequently sighted and caught operating.

"Illegal logging is a very destructive activity. Unabated logging can lead to flash floods and contribute to river siltation which will ultimately destroy our Panguil Bay," explained Environment Officer Ramon Serapio.

To strengthen the environmental campaign, the provincial government is creating an inter-agency, multi-sectoral task force that will focus on big-time illegal loggers operating in Lanao del Norte.

The anti-illegal logging task force will be chaired by Governor Dimaporo with PENRO Ben-Ali Decampong as its Vice-Chairman. Officials from the AFP and PNP as well as provincial heads will complete the composition of the new task force.

With an ever-increasing demand for timber products, regardless of their legality, the rate of forest destruction is also on the rise.

Lanao del Norte is taking the extra step to ensure that their trees stay protected from abusive illegal loggers and that their forest resources are preserve for future generations. (VNL/PIO-LDN)

Filipino scientist turns tilapia fish bone, eggshells into ‘bioceramics’ (http://ph.yfittopostblog.com/2010/10/21/filipino-scientist-turns-tilapia-fish-bone-eggshells-into-bioceramics/)

ILIGAN CITY, LANAO DEL NORTE - Waste materials like fish bones and eggshells can be turned into useful “bioceramics” for coating bone implants in humans, according to a study by Dr. Reynaldo Magdadaro Vequizo of Mindanao State University.

Vequizo headed a project at MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology on the synthesis of a bioceramic materials into a thermal spray coating for bone implants, among other medical and commercial purposes.

“In Mindanao, we found that there are a lot of agricultural and household waste like the bones of bangus (milkfish), tilapia and other fishes and the egg shells that are usually discarded as garbage and knowing their composition, we studied them as potential bioceramics,” said Vequizo, who is a professor at MSU.

During the recent ASEAN-India Review and Scientific Forum on Thermal Spray held in Tagaytay City, Vequizo presented studies that found the bangus, tilapia and egg shells as viable building blocks for bioceramics due to its calcium composition that is closely related to human bones.

In 2008, local universities like MSU were recommended provide outlines of possible studies on thermal spray.

“Our choice was between studying expensive processes and bioceramic materials. We chose the latter because the materials to make bioceramics made of fish bones and egg shells are there, we have a steady supply of that from Mindanao fish ports,” Vequizo recalls.

“We just pay the restaurants for collection of fish bones and we have a team that collects egg shells from homes and other sources as well.”

Thermal spraying is a coating process in which melted or heated materials are sprayed onto a surface to repair damage surfaces, to improve performance of movable mechanical parts or to prolong the lifespan of an equipment.

Specifically, the fish bones and egg shells are turned into hydroxyapatite compounds, which are inorganic materials that are suited for clinical applications. The material also exhibits “biocompatibility”, meaning it forms direct chemical bond with hard tissues and bones when used as bone filters or ceramic coating in surgical implants.

According to one of their studies, hydroxyapatite compounds made from tilapia bones has promising applications as chemical gas sensor and can be used in the field of chromatography, catalysts, drug delivery systems and fuel cells.

At present, there are already various techniques that are used to synthesize hydroxyapatite compounds from bioceramic materials but these are expensive. Thus, the resulting biocceramics produced are also expensive.

Citing data from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Vequizo added that inland tilapia fisheries in the country has produced 723,000 tons of tilapia in 2006, which can provide a good source of tilapia fish bones to make hydroxyapatite compounds .

Another study points to eggshells as source of hydroxyapatite bioceramics through heat treatment and “chemical route” method.

“This provides an alternative way to production of bioceramics that is cheaper than those produced using the wet chemical process that uses expensive materials,” says Vequizo.

Vequizo was sent for a month-long training in India’s Central Glass and Ceramics Research Institute.

“We are also planning to conduct similar studies to bones of tuna and blue marlin, which are also abundant products in Mindanao,” he says.

“There is a lot of promise in the area, especially that we are rich in possible sources of bioceramics in Philippines and we just disregard them as waste. I am optimistic we can make more relevant studies on this area.”

TKC Steel to commission blast furnace (http://www.manilatimes.net/index.php/business-columns/29554-tkc-steel-to-commission-blast-furnace):cheers::)
Friday, 22 October 2010

TKC Steel Corp. said it will start next week the commissioning work of its blast furnace in Iligan City.

In a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange, TKC said the blast furnace in Northern Mindanao is scheduled for cold testing to ensure all components of the system including the material handling equipment will function properly when the facility is energized next week.

Upon confirmation of cold testing results, the facility will be scheduled for hot testing and actual firing.

TKC unit Treasure Steelworks Corp. (TSC) is undertaking the project.

Delays pushed back the commissioning work in the P450-million blast furnace in Northern Mindanao, which was originally scheduled in the third quarter.

“[The delay] was due to technical issues and also the inclement weather in Mindanao and the power shortage,” Wilfrido Gamboa, TKC chief information officer, said in a text message.

TSC said the full operation of its blast furnace would improve the ability of the company to produce steel from indigenous iron ore, completing the first fully integrated steel mill in the country.

TSC’s ore beneficiation plant and power generation plant will complement the blast furnace to ensure adequate raw material supply for efficient production of steel products, TKC said.

The company trimmed its losses to P202 million in the first half from P320 million last year due to higher sales and lower operating expenses.

Its shares were last traded on Wednesday at P3.52 each.

The activity was participated in by representatives from 14 cooperatives comprising the Lanao del Norte Food Processors Association (LANORFPA).

"We need to strengthen the food processors' federation for them to gain better access to government assistance," said PCO head Rod Gamit.

During the workshop, the participants were taught the strength indicators of an organization, which includes membership, financial stability and sound organizational structure.

The LANORFPA is a regular participant in food expos and tourism conventions to give their products more exposure in the regional and national market.

In recent food conventions, LANORFPA has noted an increasing trend in its product orders from new and previous clients.

Also assisting the PCO in its activities are ECOWEB, LAFCCOD, Golden Arrow View of Life Foundation Inc. and the Department of Trade and Industry-Iligan.

To be sure, there are varieties of science museums. For example, the realm of Natural Science has very well invaded the Mindanao museum world. The finest and most equipped example is the Natural Science Museum of the College of Science and Mathematics of Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology in Iligan City which opened in the late 1970s.

hours to go before my long vacation in Iligan is over. lots of memories to treasure. lots of new places ive been to.

I was really impressed with G-Mall.

Overall I really enjoyed my stay here. Bye Iligan.. See you soon.. Inshaalllah!!

PS

Mas lami japon ang pizza sa Park to Go kaysa Calda.

ana, mas dako pa tag income sa GenSan..! ila population is around 400K while kita 300K lang..

Of course, with influx of new residents due to migration because of the tuna industry, no doubt Gen San's population would bloat faster than that of ours.

That is why we really need dynamism and enthusiasm on the part of our city officials to zone areas in our city to become hosts of light to medium industries so that our local residents will be able to find jobs as well as other citizens in the nearby provinces and regions.

Without job generating industries our city will never be able re-establish its economy.

Exactly. and we don't have to put up with investors short on cash and sincerity to invest. Look at what happened to National Steel Corporation and now called Global Steel Corporation. They don't even have the right to claim to its name as a "Global" company. They didn't pay their Php1B electricity bills to NPC as well as the local taxes. And I don't understand why the present administration is coddling this indian owners and even lobbying for re-connection of their power supply (without paying). The Mayor and his councilors should look to the bigger picture and what is good for Iligan, rather than "shortsighted political gains" (pagpugong kuno sa pag lay off, pero kung mas dako og able ang mopuli ani, mas dako nga opprtunity of daghang trabaho pa ang madugang, kays purdoy og tigi-tigi nga kumpanya). This Indians should go, there's no reason to reward corporations who don't pay electricity bills and taxes.

Tourism is a good area to start. With our natural springs and numerous waterfalls, we could train tour guides and conduct guided tours around our falls (well, we have to improve our infrastructures first) :) I've been to Bohol and I'm impressed how their government has made it into a tourist destination.

^^ Yup. I've been to Bohol as my wife comes from there. Their tourism is a good example worth emulating.

If one would look at Bohol, everything is just simple: develop tourism areas and then media exposure. Chocolate Hills, Hinagdanan, Sagbayan Peak are of simple natural attractions. THey don't ask high entrance fees but everything is really in place. T-shirt souvenirs, flyers and tarps show the tourism aspect of the whole island. Everyone supports it. In fact, all of those places are a result of LGU and Provincial Gov't unity and dynamism. I wish we can do that here in Iligan too. We have our natural attractions as well. We only lack dynamism and enthusiasm here..

I think it's highly possible in Iligan :) Maybe it's the lack of investors because of the perceived lack of security in our city :( I talked with a tour guide, and the reason they started training tour guides for Bohol is because there was a clamor from the private sector.

When I get rich, I'll create a business out of the tourism in Iligan :D

Patrombon strikes, Patrimonio falters in Korean netfest
Source: GMAnews.tv (http://www.gmanews.tv/story/205052/patrombon-strikes-patrimonio-falters-in-korean-netfest)

The country’s top male junior netter Jeson Patrombon opened his campaign in the Seogwipo Asia-Oceana Closed Championships with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Rishabdev Raman of India Wednesday in Jeju-do, South Korea.

Making adjustments against the gusty winds, Patrombon won crucial points against a crack opponent to advance to the Round-of-32.

“It was a good win. When you’re struggling with your game, and you dug deep and found a way to win the match, it means you will have another chance to do better and make adjustments for your next match," said coach Manny Tecson.

Patrombon’s next foe will be hometown bet Hogi Kang, who eliminated Shukhrat Gizatulin of Uzbekistan, 6-0, 6-1.

Seeded second in the tournament ranked B1 by the International Tennis Federation, Patrombon will need to endure the challenge of a hometown bet backed by a rowdy crowd.

“We will be dealing with not just one player, but an entire team cheering against us. We will be ready for a fight," added Tecson.

Patrombon is also seeing action in the doubles competition. He will join forces for the first time with Jaden Grinter of New Zealand.

The duo opens their bid against James Kong of Hong Kong
and Siyu Liu of China.

Patrombon’s compatriot Anna Clarice Patrimonio suffered a crushing blow in her campaign here. The daughter of Philippine Basketball Association four-time Most Valuable Player Alvin Patrimonio lost to 16th seed Kanami Tsuj of Japan, 1-6, 4-6.

Patrimonio, who will turn 17 on November 25, will try to salvage some measure of pride in the doubles competition where she will be paired with Zhu Ai of China.

They will meet Koreans Jeong Yeong Won and Kim Da Hye in the first round. - RCJ, GMANews.TV

Henry Sy and science
Source: Inquirer.net (http://www.sm.com/smic/index.php?p=259&type=2&sec=25&aid=7535)
By Antonio J. Montalvan II

IT IS probably the Rolls-Royce of science museums in the Philippines, and the fact that it attracts a mass of crowding schoolchildren each day should serve as an assurance that education in science and technology is benefiting many of our young, albeit in an alternative way outside the classroom. Located right in the midst of the SM Mall of Asia is taipan Henry Sy’s brainchild, the Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center.

Corporate museums in the Philippines are slowly growing by the handful, but the taipan chose a different genre of museum especially characterized by its hands-on interactive way of educating the museum audience. Managing the museum is Family Entertainment Center Inc., a subsidiary of the SM Group of Companies.

It would be an understatement to say that the place is filled with education. The basic scientific operations that any school child knows are all there. But it is much more than that. Many of the center’s features are both current and futuristic. A section on global warming actually teaches one to find ways to help mitigate the melting of polar ice.

Among its very interactive presentations is a virtual coral reef where a “fish friend,” Mr. T, actually answers questions on how we can take part in saving our seas. The museum viewer gets inspired by the motivational interaction. There is the Bug Rug where viewers walk through a virtual Madagascar forest floor and apply real techniques done by entomologists to know more about different critters.

There is the usual robotics section, but it goes beyond presentation by allowing children a hands-on learning process about building and programming robots. A section on “City Science” features miniature replicas of the tallest buildings in the world. Here, an exhibit shows how the largest cities of the world can be affected by tremors from an earthquake simulator. The “Smart Media City” has the latest software in information technology and computer graphics with hands-on computer terminals and LCD screens that allow for interactive learning on 3-D virtual worlds.

The crowning glory of the museum is the huge orb that one does not miss in the center of it all. It is called the “Digistar Planetarium” and is considered one of the best in Southeast Asia. Inside, it is actually a theater of the “stars” (the real variety) with a seamless domed screen that is awesomely enormous, literally bringing the viewer to the edge of one’s seat. Among several showings are the “Dawn of the Space Age,” “Stars of the Pharaohs,” “Cosmic Collisions” (simulations of cosmic impacts narrated by actor Robert Redford), “Passport to the Universe” (a virtual tour of intergalactic space narrated by actor Tom Hanks) and the “Seven Wonders of the World” and their present-day counterparts.

Ensuring both visual and aural pleasure is a digital surround sound system that enwraps the viewer’s perspective. The “Dawn of the Space Age” was a particularly moving presentation of man’s first landing on the moon in 1969. Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin come alive with the now-famous words “one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” It is as if one’s feet are literally on the moon’s Sea of Tranquility.

Science museums are actually a burgeoning trend in the country. That SM has joined the growing venture with an extremely high-tech investment is a good paradigm for corporate institutions to follow. Others have opined that where SM malls sprout, a conversely proportional decline in the values of young people takes place because of the crass materialism it lures them to. May SM Mall of Asia’s Nido Fortified Science Discovery Center be able to reverse that trend.

The trailblazer in hands-on science museums in the country is the Philippine Science Centrum, a victim of last year’s Typhoon “Ondoy” devastation in the city of Marikina. Building on the come-on that “science is fun,” that is exactly what it offers to the viewer, who may not necessarily be a child. The galleries feature interactions on electricity and magnetism, lights, water, earth science, vision and perception, mathematics, bioethics and biotechnology, mechanics and a host of other things.

Located at the Riverbanks Center, the centrum actually supports a network of science museums nationwide, apart from its popularly received traveling exhibits. It considers as its most active provincial counterpart the Oro Science and Technology Centrum of the Mindanao University of Science and Technology in Cagayan de Oro City. As expected, all of the exhibits are hands-on, a must for people of all ages and not just schoolchildren.

There is a private initiative in Pagadian City by the visual artist Edison Abraham, the Metro Park Science Museum where replica fossils of prehistoric animals are exhibited. In a class of its own is the Mindanao Food Museum of UP Mindanao in Davao City.

Science museums are the new vehicles in the pursuit of science education. They come at a special time when we lament the decline of science knowledge among our school graduates. Science museums have become authorities of their own by creating a friendly environment for learning science in an alternative non-classroom atmosphere. Those with the wherewithal should take note not only of the pedagogical benefits of this venture but also of the capital profitability it can generate. Above all, it provides a healthy resource of weekend leisure for families.

N. Mindanao posts P1.4-B tax collection
Source: Manila Bulletin (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/286308/n-mindanao-posts-p14b-tax-collection)

By MIKE U. CRISMUNDO
November 7, 2010, 3:26pm
CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines – More infrastructure development is seen in Northern Mindanao as tax collection continues to go up, with this year’s second quarter internal revenue collections alone reaching P1.426 billion compared with last year’s P1.218 billion, it was learned Sunday.

Data gathered from the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) disclosed that internal revenue collections in Northern Mindanao for the second quarter of 2010 posted 17 percent increase compared with the same period last year.

“We are expecting before the end of the year and early next year to increase this figure,” said a NEDA officer who requested anonymity.

The NEDA record showed that the biggest increase was posted by Revenue District (RD) 100 Ozamiz with 35 percent or P143.273 million this year compared with last year's P106.381 million followed by RD 99 Bukidnon with 28 percent or P191.657 million as against last year's figure of only P149.638 million.

NEDA data also disclosed that RD 98 Cagayan de Oro City also posted an increase of 24 percent or P847.697 million collection this year compared with last year's P682.030 million while RD 97 Gingoog has 21 percent increase or had a collection of P58.212 million this year compared with the 2009 figure of P47.838 million. RD 101 Iligan City also reached P185.049 million collection.

By type of tax collections, NEDA record also said other taxes registered the biggest increase with 29 percent from last year's P62.483 million to P80.779 million in the second quarter of 2010 followed by income tax with 21 percent increase, from P761.969 million last year to P925.343 million in 2010.

On the other hand, value-added tax registered 7.54 percent increase with R357.445 million this year compared with last year's R332.397 million while percentage tax had 3.11 percent increase with R61.937 million in 2010 from last year's R60.066 million.

Among all the types of taxes, only excise tax suffered negative 40.60 percent as this year's collection reached only P382,519 compared with last year's P643,978, NEDA record said. NEDA, however, is expecting this data to make positive record next year.

Suhi by IPAG

Reworked from the Oedipus plot, "Suhi" transplants the Greek classic to our modern settings, of clan wars, of subterfuge, of the scramble for domination, where our fates are left to the powers of the gods. This latest IPAG production (writer and director: STEVEN PATRICK C. FERNANDEZ) completed a 29-show run, filling up the theatres with SRO attendances to glowing responses. Perhaps, it is the relevance of the theme that drew the audiences in.

Origami at Capitol University

"Origami" by 2010 SEA Write awardee Marj Evasco is transcreated to performance by Steven Patrick C. Fernandez and the Integrated Performing Arts Guild (IPAG). Evasco's poem is celebrated in the multi-media "SugaTula" that includes the works of some of the more prominent poets with affiliations to the Southern Philippines.

@Uonno, what appropriate timing for you to post this.

I have just returned from another Amazing visit to Iligan, another sure-fire adventure for me. In addition to visiting favorite places from past visits, I also visited some of the new things that were presented here on SSC-Iligan since my prior visit.

Fontina Restaurant on Tibanga Highway next to Kingsway Inn
Opened within the past few months. A great place for a quick snack or a full meal from a wide variety on the menu. Indoor and outdoor dining available. Clean bright and cheerful. WiFi equipped, Great Food, Excellent service.

I ate here quite a few times and just to make sure the eating experience would appeal to Iliganons, I took my Iliganon friends there and they all agreed. Definetly a place for locals, Domestic tourists and International Tourists. Great deserts too and it seems I just couldn't drink enough of their Mango Shake ! I first saw this place right here on SSC-Iligan and really enjoyed it.

Spent an afternoon at a party at Timoga, fantastic !

Visited the studios of DXMA Iligans newest webstreamer in English Language to the world and locally on 95.9 FM better known as " The Edge " " Your iPod Radio. I had scheduled my visit here ahead of time and " as promised " to the fans of this station I ran " Bob New Yorks Pasalubong Trivia Contest " giving away special pasalubongs I brought with me for this event.

Another visit to NPC Natures Park. Lots of additions to it since my visit a couple of years ago. New Exhibits including live annimals such as austriches, a Monkey, Boa Constrictor ( caged of course ) and either an alligator or crocidile ( they look the same to me ). The covered pavilion area right on the river edge ( as I had learned of first right here on SSC-Iligan ) proved to be a great place to cool off on a ( to me ) hot and humid day with a nice, natural cool breeze blowing through it.

My " Big Adventure " of this visit was " Experiencing " the Zip Line. I had never been on anything like this before and it is something I will never forget.

A visit to the Mayors office and City Hall.

Another big highlight was my visit to the Iligan City jail.

my adaptation from the board game Monopoly,

" Go Directly To Jail, Do Not Pass Jollibee, Do Not Collect 200 Jolliburgers "

It was just by coincidence that my visit coincided with National Correctional Consciouness Week and in addition to touring the Jail I was invited to participate in some of the festivities. I learned how to do the " Iligan March " by watching a Youtube Video of inmates at this jail performing it a few months ago. My visit to the Jail enabled me to join in doing " Iligan March " with some of the inmates who performed it during this celebration. talk about " being in the picture " that I first saw a few months ago, can be an unforgettable experience and this surely was.

You may wonder, why would anyone want to tour a Jail ? Hey, I never said I am a " Typical " touist. When I learned from a video on Youtube a few months ago about " Iligan Citys Award Winning Jail " ( Best Jail in Northern Mindanao ) I wondered what makes an Award Winning jail. There is some interesting recent history on the Iligan Jail, too numerous to go into here. to put it in simple terms, certain aspects of it became something of community involvement for things that were really needed. I am very glad that now I have been able to make a small contribution to this continuing effort.

A visit and tour of Iligan Medical Center College ( IMCC ) which caught my attention by a Youtube Video last year of some of the students performing a song about IMCC. Along with that, a guided tour of Iligan Medical Center Hospital.

A more in-depth tour and visit to MSU-IIT. There are so many things that interest me here that it is just too much for me to absorb all in one visit and of course there are always new things to see as well.

Coffee Works at Highway 30 ( first seen here on SSC-Iligan ) I only had time to stop here a few times for some coffee to go ( take out ) and take a look around inside. I'd call it an " UpScale Coffee Shop " ( WiFi equipped ) very clean, well lit, and cozy inside. The coffee may cost you a few peso more here compared to fast food franchises take out coffee but there are times when you get what you pay for. A visit to Coffee Works at highway 30 on Tibanga Highway is one of those times.

For the first time, I was able to experience how WiFi works. I brought a small " Notepad, or is it Netpad with me with built in WiFi. I had never used Wifi before and I forgot to bring the instructions for the netpad with me. Thanks to faculty at MSU-IIT they were able to get me going with it. As I am learning about more and more new and existing places in Iligan City offering no cost WiFi service to its customers it was something I wanted to learn how to use and now I have !

There are times when I am actually in Iligan, I feel as though I am in a " Informational Blackout " of what is going on. Here at home half way around the world from Iligan I always have broadband internet and several PC's to websurf Iligan at any time. When I am there I am out and about visiting and seeing things that interest me leaving me little time for being on the internet.

Although sometimes previous arrangements have to be made, I have never been denied anything I have wanted to visit or tour in Iligan City regardless of being a customary tourist attraction or not. My thanks to all of you that have made this possible. SSC-Iligan , Youtube and more recently the many pages of Facebook about Iligan have always been my best tour guides in showing things that prompt my interest in future visits. My many thanks and gratitude to all Iliganons who keep posting on the internet.

It is just one more reason I feel my description is accurate :

ILIGAN CITY

SIMPLY AMAZING !

At the moment I am still dealing with " Jet Lag " from the long journey home.

Iligan City
The City of Majestic Waterfalls

http://www.nscb.gov.ph/ru10/profile/iligan/images/iligan_LDN_map.jpg

Overview

Chroniclers say that centuries ago, long before Legaspi’s expedition reached the Philippines in 1565, the Tala-andigs and the Banwahons, two of the known peace-loving Higa-onon tribes of Mindanao, had to build an ilihan or iliyan, meaning a “fortress of defense” on the coastal plain to secure them from the frequent attacks of pirates and savage tribes. Hence, the place came to be called as ILIGAN.

ILIGAN, City of Majestic Waterfalls, as of latest count has 23 waterfalls distributed in the 44 barangays of Iligan. Most famous of these waterfalls is the Maria Cristina Falls which is harnessed by the National Power Corporation-Mindanao Generation and provides electricity not only for the city but the entire Mindanao island as well.

http://www.nscb.gov.ph/ru10/profile/iligan/images/image001.jpg

Iligan is an industrialized city with an income of PhP 1,929,603,147 which is 87% higher of its income in the previous year. The increase of income was brought about by the new investments in the city like the construction of a bigger Gaisano Citi Super Mall and the opening of NPC’s Nature Park which boasts tourist attractions such as a zip line, ostriches, pythons, a bat park and butterfly garden, a lagoon, waterfalls, a viewing deck and wall climbing.

Iligan is not only known for its rich natural resources, but is also the home of nationally accalaimed artists, poets, film makers, cultural workers, and writers and geographically, the crossroad of the cultural mix of the Maranaos of Lanao del Sur, Higaonons of Bukidnon and the dominantly Christian settlers and migrants from Luzon, Visayas, and other places of Mindanao.

One Secret Ingredient (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/cagayan-de-oro/lifestyle/one-secret-ingredient)

By Enrico Lluch
Thursday, November 11, 2010

CROSSING over can be very risky if one is not ready and equipped, and propped up with the right reasons. Lea Padilla, the visual artist I know, just did that, and not only is she ready, equipped and backed with substantial rationale, but also, she has a cause.

Driving to Fontina Cafe from Cagayan de Oro seemed very long for I could not wait to get lost in Lea’s cooking all over again. She used to do our meals sometime ago when we “camped out” as a band of artists in the lanai of their family home in Camague, Iligan City. She had a way with sauces, a kaleidoscopic variety in the menu and presentation, and how it titillated our palates and other sensibilities. She promised to do me another breakfast, this time with my photo-shoot retinue.

To invoke the gourmand in her is like rousing the artist in a post blank-canvas stage. It is when the artist is immersed in passion with forms, colors and textures in relation to her guts. Throw Lea in the kitchen and she blends with the rest of the kitchen staff, not only because she is diminutive but also that she goes with the work flow instantaneously. Like, fish in water. Nonetheless, Enderun trained!

After I handed her my long promised gift, she ushered us all into the dining area. Lea offered no less than a sincere smile to new acquaintances, and gleefully called out to each of them in their first names like an old friend. She can truly make one very at home. Though the breakfast was brief and hearty, it was everything else except unexciting. Imagine sunny-side-up eggs, ham and bacon, over a delicate layer of robust tomato sauce, fresh herbs galore as garnish, and sprinklings of triple-cheese over an ultra thin crust pizza that is baked to perfection; freshly brewed coffee; and, followed by freshly baked apple-tart -- crust folded and tucked with aplomb, as opposed to the usual cover and fluting. Both pizza and apple pie are not yet on Fontina’s menu. Quite an exchange gift, I may say. The textures and feel of the breakfast is reminiscent of one I had in my youth on a visit to Navarra, Barcelona.

Lea has been making art since early in her grade school. While in her grade 1, her nimble hands crafted bookmarks which she gave to classmates. At home, she would frolic in Mom’s kitchen and fashioned gum paste into flowers etcetera, of course to Mommy Chol’s delight. Mom was in the peak of catering and baking in the late 60s and 70s. Somehow, Lea became the “cook” among the siblings.

Perhaps through genetic predisposition, if there is anything of that sort, and through her own volition and willful designs, she became the accomplished visual artist that she is now. Armed with a Bachelor of Fine Arts major in Painting degree, from no less than the University of Santo Tomas, throughout her life, she has shaped a school of art disciples in Iligan. Approaching art-making with a pedagogy of art-appreciation as its basis, her tutelage is such that her students end up becoming interior designers, decorators and even architects, if not becoming accomplished as artists themselves.

She has not been at painting since the resto-cafe opened. Thus, all the creative juices are all poured into her cuisine. No doubt, the flavors that one is treated with in every dish ordered is approaching gourmet levels with anthropologic significance û very much like her paintings: detailed, textured and rich with cultural, as well as, personal significance.

Food and the business of it are borne from a concoction of processes and ingredients, and of course, purpose.

Fontina cafe is family owned. Siblings Roberto Padilla (corporate and trial lawyer), Agnes Clipp (based in Maryland, USA), Ruby Sta. Maria (pediatrician), Cynthia Padilla, and Ampoy Siao (businesswoman, councilor’s wife, and law-student) all pitch in, in one way or another, to get the act right. With two other chefs in their employ, managing-chef Lea gets zealous team playing with Cynthia in the administration. Save for the one in the US, the siblings would drop by when time allows for them to relish their enclave which just opened last summer. Renowned lawyer and former vice-mayor of Iligan, father Henry beamed at my explanation why I was there with camera and all. With his continuous zest for legal counseling and his usual charm, one would have no hint that he is in his mid-80s. The family is the secret ingredient if one observes.

“Our food is not fusion because it sounds like confusion. As with culture, food adapts to some variation. The right ingredients and processes elevate the food as guide to places of their origin.” Lea proffers when I provoked her with an interjection, “Asian-fusion?” as a definitive tagline for Fontina’s cuisine.

Through all her trips abroad, of all names, why pick, Fontina?

Fontina cheese has been made in the Alpine Val d’Aosta in Italy since the 12th century. It is Lea's preferred cheese because “it can be appreciated as it is, it can also be used as an ingredient in soups, cakes, sauces and dips”.

The price is prohibitive but she sees it as “an investment” in her cuisine and in the family-owned restaurant-cum-cafe.

"The longer it is aged, the stronger and richer the flavours become. The perk in the palate is just priceless." Fontina Val d'Aosta is essentially "made from raw or unpasteurized milk from a single milking" (Wikipedia).

I can never have enough of it, as it can be eaten with Moutarde de Meaux, a grainy mustard, as an aperitif to a wide choice of main courses and desserts, that might as well involve Fontina cheese, together with other cheeses.

When in Fontina Cafe, try asking for a platter sampler of the namesake cheese from either of the Ms Padilla's around. They might just indulge you, but do not cringe at the tag, it may comes all the way from the Italian Alps, Denmark, Sweden or France. Pray it is Italian, if you love strong cheese.

The name Fontina for the resto-cafe is family picked, as Lea insists. She floated several other prospective names, and in a vote by the family -- nephews, nieces, grandchildren included, it creamed its way thru.

Lea was not content serving us breakfast. She arrayed for lunch some Ravioli in tomato sauce, roast beef on her unique fresh take on Java rice, samosa with yogurt dip, grilled Norwegian pink salmon sitting on a bed of greens and some slices of tropical fruits, and family-recipe lengua.

How playful can Lea be with our palate! Somosa is traceable to a Persian origin that has its variants across Mediterranean Africa, Greece, Arabian countries, India, and Southeast Asia. Indeed, very playful because her samosa blended so well with the ravioli, and the grilled salmon, and the roast beef.

Cilantro, cumin, fresh ripe mangoes, yogurt, and of course Fontina cheese were coming through in the merry combination. You would not dare down these in soda! Fresh pineapple juice regaled the gourmand in me.

Easily, the Fontina Cafe courts a cross-culture market. And how! Patrons flood the dining area; turn after turn, through the end of the interview and the final clothes-change, that merienda time came so quickly and unnoticed. I was so bemused at Stylist Sunshine Casiño muttering softly “naa na sad na...” (here it comes) referring to the cast-iron stand being placed ahead as though heralding the entrance of the earthenware pizza platter that cradled a fresh-from the oven paper thin, spinach pizza û also with three cheeses. Again, Fontina cheese included.

Lea and kin, and the rest of the IHARA (Iligan Hotel & Restaurant Association) can only wish the Iligan City government will follow the lead of Cagayan de Oro in lowering business taxes for the restaurant and hotel industry, which ideally should be below 1%. If only to encourage investors, as well as diners and the other gourmands the city has known.
“I am very fulfilled when in the kitchen.”

Better than as an artist?

“I can't say that. I have been an artist all my life. Being a chef and being an artist have differences as well as similarities. The culinary arts is akin in discipline with visual arts. But unlike painting where one begins with her own concept and execution, without need of collaboration, and without care whether people would appreciate much less buy it, with cooking, there is an end cause of wanting to satisfy people.”

The artist in her is let loose in the kitchen, from raw material procurement, to menu planning to food preparation. Fontina Cafe, serendipitously, houses some of her significant works and collection of works by other artists, and now, hers and the two other Fontina cooks' cuisine. Apart from the function-hall at the second floor, it is a potential alternative exhibition space.

With Lea having her family as main ingredient to her reinvention of herself as a restaurateur-artist, the burning cause to share continues to glow. And in a symbiosis, Fontina glows as Lea grows.

Night Market Preparations Underway
Thursday, 11 November 2010

http://www.iligan.gov.ph/images/stories/news%20image/cm_market_01.jpg

Iligan City, Philippines - Preparations are underway on the plan of the Committees of Trade and Commerce and Ways and Means in the creation of a night market in Iligan City.

City councilors Frederick Siao and Ruderic Marzo together with concerned businesses discussed the substance of the ordinance in the planned night market in a public hearing in yesterday’s session of the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The night market will be operated only on Fridays and Saturdays at the public plaza.

The night market will include dry goods and ukay-ukay, footwear, kitchenwares, groceries, and general merchandise. There will also be eateries like turo-turo, barbecue stands, softdrinks, alcoholic drinks, and other food stuffs. The night market will allow the entry of various services like reflexology and massage clinics, gift items like flowers, plants, appliances, furniture, and entertainment/recreation like video-singko, computer games and stationary rides.

Siao and Marzo will tackle next the standard size of stalls and the corresponding fees.

In addition to the very enjoyable meals and good company I enjoyed at Fontina one afternoon I took some time out from a busy day to just sit at one of the outside tables, have a Mango Shake ( or two LOL ) and just watch the traffic go by. That may seem like nothing special for those of you that live there and see these things every day. For me, things like the Jeepneys and the transit tour busses and Super 5 are things that for most of the year I can only see here on my internet screen on SSC-Iligan.

Being able to sit back and relax while enjoying a freshly made cool and sweet Mango Shake and experience these things " Live " right in front of me may seem like a simple pleasure but a very memorable one to me.

This is why mr alingatong's pictures are so precious. They show everyday scenes of rural Philippines that are so hard to come by. I am in tHe same boat that you are, mr bob. Except that you have been there recently and I, on the other hand, do not yet know when I might be so lucky to enjoy the real presence in those parts. Chinese Build 15-Story Hotel In Just Six Days, Rest On Seventh

Ps0DSihggio

Six days. That's how long it took to build this level 9 Earthquake-resistant, sound-proofed, thermal-insulated 15-story hotel in Changsha, complete with everything, from the cabling to three-pane windows. The foundations were already built, but it's just impressive.

The wonders of prefabricated construction modules and modern construction techniques will never cease to amaze me. I just can't understand why every single building is not pre-made in factories first, for optimal energy, material and time savings, not to talk about a more efficient and cheaper end result and, in the case of the Ark Hotel, only 1% construction waste. That's not simple @Bob! for me it's very memorable and worthwhile. I feel the same thing one time i thought i would be in the states or somewhere else in the world: i would just sit at one place of the city and observe the people, the atmosphere of the place, and see what makes them all move in just one day. :)

I also thought too that someday I would be somewhere in Cincinnati or upstate New York to do exactly as you did. But for now, only net pics for me since it's very hard enter the states nowadays. That's despite the American background we have of my mother's side! :)

@Tonzi , Yes it is a shame that my Iligan friends, and others may never realize a chance to visit the USA. I have researched this over the past few years and it seems that in the past so many from not only The Philippines but many other places in the world, once here go " T N T " ( your words tago ng tago I think ) and do not return to their home country when they are supposed to. It is too bad that this has ruined the dreams of honest people that would just like to come for a visit and see the USA.

In more recent times now it seems the primary problem of illegal immagration is happening from some of the South American countries as there are places where they can just walk across the border because it is nearly impossible to control the hundreds of miles of the USA / Mexican Border. Once here, the illegals expect and many times get, free welfare, free medical attention, free schooling for their children, and more, all at the expense of the USA Taxpayer.

In two nearby towns to me, the " downtown " areas have completely changed in recent times. Businesses have closed down or moved out, there are illegal immagrants from South America, and possibly elsewhere, hanging out on the sidewalks all day waiting to be picked up by contractors and paid cash as Temporary Day Laborers who get paid off the books at sometimes less than the Federal minimum Wage. One of these towns recently had to for the first time create an anti-public urination law. The long time residents of these localities don't even go in the " downtown " areas any more.

Now I would not go as far as saying " all " of these people are bad, after learning so much about your country in the past few years, I can understand they are here for the same basic reason many Philippine OFW's are here for. The major difference if those that enter legally and leave when or if they are supposed to, as opposed to those that enter Ilegally, try their best to stay under the radar and hide from authority and at times, yes they can create problems.

Situations like this are contributing factors that make it so difficult and nearly impossible for you and others just to come here for a vacation.

I hope that someday you can realize your dream Tonzi, just as I have by visiting your city.

I just want to share this modern construction marvel.

[Archdaily (http://www.archdaily.com/88245/video-ark-hotel/) via Gizmodo (http://gizmodo.com/5687521/chinese-build-15+story-hotel-in-just-six-days-rest-on-seventh)]

:bash: :bash: :bash: so this method can build a 60-storey edifice in a month.

Thursday, 11 November 2010

Wow. This can give added income to the city and stimulates business at night. I know this one will be successful. Way to go Iligan.

It was so " refreshing " to drink Coca-Cola and other such beverages from " Real " Coke Bottles while I was in Iligan. The kind you need a can opener to remove the cap, where the empty bottles are returned and re-used. Most all of that has vanished in the USA in favor of plastic bottles and pop-top cans, all being disposable or for material re-cycling. The " real " bottles of years ago ( here ) can withstand more internal pressure than the disposable kind which means more pressure = more carbonization = a better tasting beverage, at least I think so. Re-fillable bottles have less impact on the inviornment too. It is nice to know that some places in the world still use them. It is probably the cost of labor here in the USA that made the use of refillable Coca-Cola bottles obsolete here.

Nice pic @ Alingatong

The first time I heard " Iligan March " on a Youtube Video, even though I could not understand the words, and the song was nicely sync'd with still pics of Iligan to illustrate the lyrics of the song I was quite fascinated by it.

Additional Youtube videos posted later revealed to me that a kind of dance went with the song. The first of these videos were a bit too " fluid " or individual, amoungst the performers for me to be able to grasp many of the steps and moves.

About 1 year ago a video on inmates at Iligan Citys " Award Winning " Jail got my attention as the performers were more closely precise and for the most part in unison with eachother , such as you would expect of a Military Drill Parctice. After watching this a few times I thought maybe I could learn this from watching and practicing with that video, which i eventually ( well, almost ) have !

Recently there have been 3 Youtube Videos showing Iligan March at the Monday Morning Flag raising ceremony at the Amphetheater near City Hall. Before my recent visit I was hoping that I might be able to join them as it looks like something fun to me.

As the time got closer to my recent visit, I was informed that the only Monday I would be in Iligan it would be a Holiday so there would be no Flag Raising ceremony at City Hall that week.

I had already planned a visit to Iligans " Award Winning " jail and while there I met a City Hall employee who has an office at the Jail. I mentioned about how I wished I could have been at the Flag Raising ceremony to try my skill at doing the " Iligan March " which I had learned from the video of the inmates doing it at the Jail.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecAsGDWKKnY

I was then informed that if I wished to do the Iligan March, there would be a performance of it at the jail that week and I would be welcomed to participate !

This was certainly an unexpected surprise and I would be able to demonstarte my skill ( or lack of it ) in the very same place I had learned it from Via Youtube Video . As most of the lyrics of Iligan March are in a language that for the most part is unknown by me, keeping in sync with it can be a bit challenging at times so at some times I try to keep up syncing with certain sounds and at other times words that I can remember. I'll continue working on it for a future visit.

To me this is an " Only In Iligan " experience for me. When I thought something I could participate in could not happen because of a holiday, something even better happend in being able to try my skill at Iligan March at the very place the " Instructional Video " had been made that first attracted my interest. At the time the video of the inmates performance was being recorded, they never knew they would be teaching someone the " Iligan March " on the other side of the world.

Nice Job Inmates ! Thanks to many people I was able to come there and show you the results and I had a great time doing it.

I noticed many Christmas Decorations in various places in Iligan during my recent visit and a very nice one even came back home with me. For me, it is kind of unusual seeing so many Christmas Decorations while it is 80 to 85 Degrees F. and humid outside. For me, my mind says " Summer " when I am in Iligan and when I think or see something of Christmas I also think of cold weather and maybe even snow on the ground LOL !

I now have a small table top Christmas Tree that I will use this year that was hand made in Iligan, the land of endless summer , to me.

I just read all the forums here and all you people (including me) are just pleased with what is going on to iligan..i know, new places to hang out and new buildings. But i am totally disgusted how the goverment of iligan manage the beautification of iligan. By the way, I just returned home for about 2 decades stay in the west. Anyway, back to my topic. First of all, the road from la salle going to redemtorist, my god...it is still lubak2x, much more going to st. michaels tibanga lubak2x napud...naunsa man tawon na...i remember that road during my la salle days because i used to walk when going home and still it is not yet cemented, imagine for almost 20 years na and the street on the side of unitop, why is that not cemented whereas the street between loys and dy pico is cemented?!! Second, The street lights is not functioning during the night, that is why crimes is around the corner, and lastly, the most disgusted thing that is in iligan right now, is when I went to city hall to get something, goverment employees are just sitting around and compute nang compute ug swertres..by golly, mismo sa city hall they are doing that?!! I also noticed that there are many sikads na sa major streets in iligan but I dont mind that because these sikad drivers are just earning a living...and by the way Bob of new york, when you get back in our city again, please try to go to la salle and pass by that road going to redemtorist and st. michaels tibanga and what can you say about it? I think this is all for the moment...

I think it would be out of place and a bit difficult for me to comment on the politics and funding distributions of the Iligan City Govt. I am not even all that knowledgable on that in my own town let alone anyone elses.

Iligan may not be " perfect " but can you tell me anyplace in the world that is ? Even here where I live in the USA we have roads that were proposed to be widened 25 years ago to acomodate the thousands ( yes, thousands ) of commuter passenger cars that use it every day and it is still waiting to be done ! The road surface of this particular road is an Auto Mechanics delight from the extra wear and damage it can do to cars. New York State Govt claims they are " Broke " , I'll leave it to you to wonder why.

I think just about everyone everywhere wants improvements, top notch maintenance and repair of existing things, upgrades to outdated or outmoded things and much more. This once again all comes down to " Funding ". Where does this funding come from ? The taxpayers of course and who wants higher taxes ? More or higher taxes equals even less money in the working persons pocket to spend for necessities and hopefully a little extra to go out and have a good time or save up buy something new that is not a necessity like maybe a new TV, iPod, PC etc.

Where I live, the taxes are so high, many people can no longer afford to live here when they retire and have to move to another part of the country where the cost of living is more reasonable. The kids growing up here today will not be able to afford to live here when they grow up and have their own families and the same thing happened to my own home town. Little by little more affluent people moved in and demanded " perfect ", and most of the " average working class " people could no longer afford to live there.

The best suggestion I could give you for first hand information would be to make an appointment with the Mayor and make your views known in a polite kind of way. From what I undersatnd there are many times he is in his office late for residents, groups and organizations to meet with him, provided he is not called away on a priority or emergency situation. I did exactly this last year when I just wanted to say hello and make a positive comment or two about my visit.

You have to remember that I am a visitor, guest and to the extent that I can be, a friend to Iligan. It was only by accident that I ever even found Iligan in the first place and although I have spent many many hours learning about your city over the past 5 years or so I'll never know every single detail about it.

I believe there is a very careful " Balance " as to how much people can be taxed, and then how to use the taxes for the best possible advantage of the residents that pay it. Without knowing nearly all the facts and figures involved one can only speculate.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY, Philippines — At least seven government and private universities and colleges in Mindanao have been identified by the Professional Regulations Commission (PRC) and the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) as among the top 20 tertiary schools in the country today. A report entitled “Top 20 Universities in the Philippines,” shows the result of a joint study lately conducted by PRC and CHEd based on the average passing in the board examinations of all courses of all institutions of higher learning in the Philippines. The report listed Davao City’s Ateneo de Davao University as No. 1 among the seven Mindanao-based tertiary schools even as the Jesuit-run school placed overall fifth in the national ranking.

Tanan man na siyudad daghan ug problema.

Tanan man na siyudad daghan ug problema.

the main reason why investors be it foreign/local are reluctant to enter Iligan and splurge their money here is because of SECURITY reason.Although we the Iliganons can attest that the situation is not that bad but there has been some incidents that has stained the city's image. Another important thing is the accessibility,Iligan is not that accessible.Iligan is one of the 2 cities in NORMIN that is dependent to another city when it comes to air transport. Ozamiz and Pagadian has an edge over Iligan as they have their airport open and investors do come by plane most of the time. Why would they venture to a city which is another bus/car ride away when they have CGY sighted as soon as they stepped in the tarmac.. Although LADP is groomed to replace IGN and Lumbia but our LGU should think twice on this. Having our own airport open to commecial service is always an advantage to the city. For sea transport, well it's not really that bad but IGN has meanwhile has been an extension route in the past years. At the moment all the vessel serving IGN-CBU route has to go to Ozamiz first. 2x a week service by ATS and 1x a week trip to TAGB-CBU-MNL by NN. I think our LGU should look into this. I don't think corruption is so GARAPAL here in the city. Yes we do have some pot holes in some of our streets in the city but who has tried to traverse the famous Divisoria in CGY,a place considered to be a city center...Iligan may have been overtaken by other cities but she's still dear to me as it is to others...:)and yes I do agree our city officials find it hard to hear our sentiments... I don't know if they are really doing it on purpose heheh.

undeniably, security reasons is one of the culprits of why investors are not coming in. Zamboanga which has a population of 700k hasn't had a share of investments that Gensan and CdeO gotten. Yes, truly it is security. BUT, if that 's the case here in Iligan, It is high time that our city officials do something about it. The problem with our officials here is that they are not able to fully emphasize on re-imaging Iligan to the visitors. That is why, sometimes, re-inventing is also important. By and by, if we do it slowly, we will surely reap blessings in the future if we start now.

Maybe they can start re-innovating our city business district and introducing new growth areas where new businesses can locate? Since our city has a relatively small CBD, we need to expand. Why not reclaim some part of our waterfronts and introduce a public mall on it and then, sell some parts of the remaining lands to prospective private entities?

On the part of the airport, i dont think it is viable for our city to put up its own airport. We cannot just put airports near the others. LADP is merely 60 kms and just about 35 - 40 mins drive.

sakto jud. perhaps the circumferential road project will expand the city and developed into a new commercial district. that would surely make more advantageous to businessmen to have available new lots or buildings available and make the rents more competitive. sa karon gamay ra ang siyudad, mag-ilog og renta sa building maong medyo taas ra ang rate, vis a vis sa income generated sa business.

I have a friend who used to work for KFC and he said they already had a feasibility study for Iligan City. I don't know what's stopping them from making a branch. I'm sure they will earn a lot here.

Without knowing nearly all the facts and figures involved one can only speculate.

well said, Bob.:applause:
God bless you for loving Iligan City. you're one of a kind.:cheers2:

(boy decena)

In an earlier post I described how Iligan City Hall come through for me when I thought something I was looking forward to on my recent visit was not going to happen.

Here is the video of my " Debut Attempt " at doing the Iligan March and by special arrangement from some of those at City Hall, I was able to do it for those that had taught it to me via " long Distance " via their vidio posted one year earlier, the inmates at the Iligan City " Award Winning Jail " .

They or for that matter no one else knew I was learning to do this watching their video on youtube from half way around the world.

Not to disapoint me, this video has me virtually doing Iligan March for those that unknowingly taught it to me, and also with those at the Monday Morning Flag Raising Ceremony at City Hall at the same time !

Thanks to the City Hall Website team for the many hours of production and editing that went into making this video possible. This is one of the best souveniers ( pasalubong if you like ) I could have ever imagined of my visits to Iligan.

Gov't to prioritize Mindanao Railway
November 22, 2010, 7:30pm
Manila Bulletin

MANILA, Philippines – The government is exploring the possibility of prioritizing the development of the proposed Mindanao Railway, a proposal which was originally hatched during the Estrada administration and was pushed by then ARMM chairman Nur Misuari.

“Explore the possibility of prioritizing the Mindanao Railway,” stated an aide memoire of the National Economic and Development Authority following the recent consultation on the chapter on infrastructure under the 2010-2016 Medium-Term Philippine Development Plan.

Most recent project estimates have placed the total project cost at P66.5-billion, approximately $1.33-billion.

It is envisioned to be implanted in four phases: initially from Laguindingan to Cagayan de Oro City; second from Laguindingan to Iligan City ; third from Cagayan de Oro to Phividec area in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental and the fourth phase from Iligan City to Linamon town, Lanao del Norte. The project aims to cut the present 90-minute travel time by buys between Cagayan de Oro and Iligan to 15-20 minutes.

The initial Mindanao strategic railway development plan will link urban centers like Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Pagadian, Dipolog, Marawi, Cotabato and Davao cities.

The Mindanao Railway System project aims to provide a sage and economical transport alternative for moving goods and people in Mindanao , which in the long run, will help in the socio-economic development of the island.

The Mindanao Railway System is part of the list of projects identified and presented to investors for medium-term rollout at the recently-concluded Public-Private Partnership forum.

A feasibility study for the project is being reviewed and deliberated by the NEDA Regional Office 10, but a more detailed FS still need to be determined. Initial timetable points to a phased project implementation through PPP to be undertaken in 2011.

The proposed rail will span the entirety of Mindanao with a total length of approximately 2000 kilometers.

The master plan indicates connections to all major population centers in Mindanao . The railway network will be implemented in phases.

Phase 1 calls for the construction of a 124-km railway line from Iligan City to Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao.

It will traverse ten coastal municipalities in Misamis Oriental, namely: Lugait, Manticao, Naawan, Initao, Libertad, Gitagum, Laguindingan, Alubijid , El Salvador and Opol.

Earlier, the project was scheduled to start in 2011 with the initial spur of the first phase between Cagayan de Oro City and the new airport in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental.

But the entire project would take 5-7 years to complete. (BCM)

Lanao del Norte recognizes latest graduates of VIHIMS training
Source: PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101105.htm&no=B9)

Tubod, Lanao del Norte -- To efficiently manage the provincial hospitals of Lanao del Norte, the Provincial LGU has set out to implement a fully integrated hospital information management system.

The Vertex Integrated Hospital Information Management System (VIHIMS) is created by Vertex Business Applications, Inc., a software company based in Cebu City, will generate a summarized data on the general operations of each of the hospitals that will provide the provincial leadership with the necessary information to make decisions that can further improve its healthcare services.

After six months of actual on-the-job training by a transition team from Vertex, 37 employees of Kapatagan Provincial Hospital finally received their graduation certificate from Engr. Mark Gesalem (Vertex General Manager) and Provincial Governor Khalid Dimaporo.

"The difference is like day and night. Now all the information that we need is just one click away," testified Chief of Hospital Dr. Medel Tomada.

Prior to Kapatagan Hospital, 2 provincial hospitals have already undergone the system's training and have also successfully produced graduates; these are Kolambugan Provincial Hospital and Lanao del Norte Provincial Hospital.

Next to be trained by system implementers from Vertex will be the provincial hospitals in Sultan Naga Dimaporo and Kauswagan.

"We are equipping our provincial hospitals with everything that they need, so they can also provide the best healthcare services for our people," Governor Dimaporo said. (VNL/PIO-LDN)

Upgrading of Lanao Norte's provincial hospitals underway
Source: PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101111.htm&no=A2)

Tubod, Lanao del Norte -- Three provincial hospitals in Lanao del Norte have recently finished the upgrading of their facilities as part of the Health Facility Enhancement Program of the Department of Health (DOH).

First to benefit from this DOH program are provincial hospitals in the coastal towns of Kapatagan, Kolambugan and Kauswagan. A fund of P2 million has been earmarked for each of the hospitals to upgrade its existing buildings.

"We are very thankful for the infrastructure support given by DOH. The expansion projects would enable our hospitals to cater to more patients from in and around Lanao del Norte," Governor Khalid Dimaporo expressed.

For Kolambugan Provincial Hospital, the upgrading program included the construction of 10 additional comfort rooms, the repair and reconstruction of operating rooms, delivery rooms, wards, dietary and laboratory sections.

The Center for Health Development of DOH-Region 10 headed by Dr. Jaime Bernadas has already requested for additional funds from the DOH Central Office to upgrade the other government hospitals in Lanao del Norte under the Province-wide Investment Plan for Health program or PIPH.

Lanao del Norte has seen a steady increase in the admission of patients in its provincial hospitals after Gov. Dimaporo introduced major health reforms in the provincial healthcare system. (VNL/PIO-LDN)

The launching activities will include a two-day business registration and investments promotion campaign at the ground floor lobby of Gaisano Citi Mall, 10:30am, November 15.

The launching proper at DTI in Pala-o, this city, on November 17, at 2:00pm is set for the unveiling and blessing of NERBAC Iligan, where the Center is officially located.

The creation of the NERBAC is provided under Republic Act (RA) 7470, otherwise known as the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center of the Philippines Act of 1992.

It specifically aims to provide comprehensive and highly integrated business support services to prospective investors and businessmen.

The cooperating government agencies such as the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), DTI, Pag-IBIG Fund, Philhealth Insurance Corporation (PHIC), and Social Security System (SSS), involved in business registration, permitting and licensing, will be represented and converged in this one-stop action shop, to include LGU offices from the Permits & License Division, City Treasurer's Office and Iligan Investment Promotions Center (IIPC).

It will give businessmen here in Iligan a hassle-free processing required by the above-concerned agencies, expressed Paclipan.

At NERBAC office, investors and business people can expect assistance on the following concerns: business permit and licensing; business name registration; information for investors; and investment procedures, incentives, and assistance.

Also, business counseling and investment promotion services shall be rendered by DTI and IIPC authorities.

NERBAC Iligan aims to ensure that accurate and timely information and assistance will be provided to clients, developing the city's business environment to be more friendly and conducive for investments.

This is a single entry point for investors on comprehensive and highly integrated business support by pooling government resources in the said Express Business Center, thereby reducing red tape and improving effectiveness and efficiency in government services.

It offers a myriad of government services for start-up and expanding business that include business licensing and registration, knowledge and information management and proactive investment marketing.

Furthermore, it is an all-in-one center that houses all concerned agencies in the government tasked to provide prospective investors and entrepreneurs basic information on various business options that are open to them, in accordance with investment priorities of the government.

NERBAC Iligan is the first provincial center to be established in Region 10, other than the one in Cagayan de Oro City which was categorized as a regional center.

The establishment is made possible by the concerted efforts of the head of offices of cooperating five (5) NGAs and the unwavering support of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz; and Frederick W. Siao, chairman of SP Committee on Trade, Industry and Commerce, all of this city.

The center is open for business transactions, Monday to Friday, 8:00am to 5:00pm.

Every Wednesday, representatives of all cooperating agencies will report to the center for various seminars, briefings or fora to be conducted.

The center will cater clients, businessmen and would be investors, not only from Iligan City but also from the neighboring towns of Lanao del Norte.

NERBAC Iligan will strive to provide clients with a faster, better and more efficient service, as it is also an investment arm. (PIA LDN/DTI Iligan)

CCIFII eyes more investors with establishment of NERBAC Iligan
Source: PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101120.htm&no=41)

by Lorry V. Gabule

lligan City (20 November) -- We are glad that the businessmen's aspiration of having a One-Stop Action Shop or the so-called National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (NERBAC) for business registration and licensing has come to realization.

Thus expressed Emily M. Pascua, president, Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation of lligan, Inc., (CCFII), as she delivered her message after the unveiling and blessing of the NERBAC lligan at the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Provincial Office, located at Durias Building, Quezon Avenue Extension, this city.

This is very timely, that we in lligan Chamber, together again with DTI and other cooperating agencies, and the local government unit (LGU) of lligan to look into the business permits and licensing system (BPLS) reforms. Together, it would complement with the overall cycle of business registration, Pascua said.

Our ability to provide fast business registration to eligible investors would greatly enhance Iligan City competitiveness with the rest of our neighbouring cities. For one person to decide to go into business, we would think that it would just then be easy for him/her. For so many, it is just the start of myriads of processes and delays either from the local or the national offices, said Pascua.

I understand NERBAC is considered one of the flagship projects of the government especially as an anti-red tape endeavour, added Pascua.

She revealed that knowing from the DTI and the LGU-permits and license division that in a year lligan's record of those who filed for business registration and licensing (old and new) reached only up to 7,000 more or less, as compared to other cities that registered triple or more than we have here, per record at DTI 10 regional office.

"We, in the business community, looks very positively on this launching, which is the first provincial NERBAC established in region 10, aside from the NERBAC in DTI-regional office in Cagayan de Oro City, and we expect to have more investors in lligan to experience NERBAC's delivery of better, faster and more efficient service that it can offer, to a hassle-free business registration," Pascua said. Lanao Norte employees undergo newswriting, photojournalism workshop
Source: PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101120.htm&no=41)

Tubod, Lanao del Norte (22 November) -- Writing news articles and taking quality photos are necessary skills for any media practitioners. Like any skills it should be honed and practiced to gain expertise and become adept journalists.

Participants of the News Writing and Photojournalism workshop exercise their journalistic skills during the one-day training organized by the provincial government.

Tapped to give his expert advice to aspiring and budding journalists was Bobby Timonera, a renowned journalist and multi-awarded photographer. Presently, Timonera is also the editor of online news provider MindaNews.

"Write to inform not to impress," Timonera stressed.

"One should be creative, to think first what to shoot and what to write and to constantly practice," Timonera added.

The MindaNews editor presented in the one-day workshop the basics of news writing and photo-journalism.

Through his in depth knowledge on photography and his extensive experience as a journalist, Timonera gave useful tips on how to be effective in both fields.

The participants came from different offices in the provincial government particularly those that are in the frontline of government services.

The seminar stressed the need for government to inform the people of the various services offered by its national and local line agencies.

"We need to tell our constituents that we are doing something on their concerns, that their government is working for them," Information Officer Lyndon Calica said. (mc/vnl)

Aussies eye Northern Mindanao as next booming economy
Wednesday, November 24, 2010

TUBOD, Lanao del Norte - Australian officials expressed optimism on the economic growth potential of Northern Mindanao during a visit here on November 23.

"I'm of the belief that Northern Mindanao will become the growth center of Mindanao in the future," predicted Sam Chittick, Governance Adviser to the Australian Aid Agency (AusAID).

Chittick and Australian diplomat Jason Mundy were here to personally evaluate the province's socio-economic conditions and to consult with provincial and municipal leaders regarding their priority projects and programs.

"We come here because Lanao del Norte is an important part of the Philippines and we have associations with Governor Khalid Dimaporo," Mundy said.

The Australian officials were impressed with the provincial leaders' local peace initiatives aimed at uniting the Muslim and Christian residents in both the coastal and interior municipalities.

"Lanao del Norte is a bridging community between Muslims and Christians," Chittick said.

The Australian government has several partnership programs in the Visayas and in some cities of Mindanao. Its biggest project assistance focuses in the areas of education and infrastructure.

Former Rep. Abdullah Dimaporo provided the foreign representatives firsthand information on the latest peace and order situation in the region and the impact of poverty-intervention programs implemented by national government.

"Support from foreign governments and agencies are very important to the development of Lanao del Norte," Dimaporo said.

The facts gathered by the Australian representatives will help determine the kind of assistance their government can extend to Lanao del Norte to spur economic growth in Northern Mindanao.

(boy decena)

Indeed very alarming as most of us and even most governments are still thinking more on the global warming side. But did we hear that the earth is now cooling? Did we know that some if not most of the glaciers are now increasing in size? Did we know that as early as now, the northern part of the globe is now being battered by severe and record breaking winter storms which is very unusual at this point in time?

Some says that the effect of man generated green house is only less than 10% or probably 5%. I mean, did they try to look on the present situation of the sun as the main source of heat or solar energy that we have?

Di lang ko manghadlok pero at present, we are in solar minimum since 2007. Solar minimum in the sense that the sunspots count is really at minimum. Unsa may buot pasabot anang sunspots? Kung gamay lang ang sunspots count means lesser activity that will result to lesser radiated energy from the sun. And I think that is the main reason na nagkaworse every year since 2008 ang winter sa north and south.

Wala ma'y problema kung magminimum ang sunspots kay naa man na s'ya 11-year cycle. Pero what is of major concern at the moment, the sunspots now looks not following the 11-year cycle. Supposedly, we are at solar maximum (around 100-150 sunspots) by 2011 pero until now wala pa gihapon motaas: this day 1 sunspot lang ang na count.

A similar scenario happened before, 16th and 17th centuries, and that resulted to what they called now the little ice age or maunder minimum. I just hope na di ta moabot ana or else sa kadaghan na sa tawo karon, basi'g famine ang abuton ana sa kalibutan.

Btw, as early as October, US has already declared a shortage of food supply kay sayo lagi daw ming abot ang winter, daghan daw wala maka harvest kay nagstart na magfrost... FYI

Privatization of Hydro-Electric Complexes Deferred
Thursday, 25 November 2010

Iligan City, Philippines -The plan of the Energy Power Industry Reform Act or EPIRA to privatize the Agus and Pulangi Hydro-Electric Complexes in 2011 will not push through.

The Department of Energy Department of Finance, Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corporation (PSALM), National Power Corporation and the Committee on Energy of Congress were in favor of House Resolution No. 107 by Iligan City Representative Vicente “Varf” Belmonte, Jr.

A committee hearing was conducted on November 23 with regard to the resolution in the Lower House.

Congressman Belmonte sees this development as a positive step in Iligan’s fight against the continued rise of power rates. Belmonte was thankful of the full support of Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz, Vice Mayor Henry Dy and the members of the City Council, civil society groups and all concerned individuals.

( if any of the more experienced posters here can put the vid here, please do but for now, here is the link. )

Change to outside perception? your answer to your friend should have been the start bai..i mean, you are an Iliganon and you can't just let somebody say a stereotypical description of your hometown.

"Palaging binobomba" ? If we say "palagi", that's like every now and then something blasts off from our city when in fact it isn't. You could have just answered "a few years back"..or "that was before but now it is peaceful"..."there are even foreigners who prefer it than Manila"..

Tell your ignorant friend (just like the rest of the people living in Metro Manila who thinks Manila is the whole Philippines already) that there are more people who die an unnatural death (due to crimes) in Metro Manila everyday than the number of people who die in Iligan for an entire year because of crimes. :)

In addition, in case your friend is too ignorant & oblivious about the existence of other Filipinos living outside Metro Manila, tell him also that yes, here in Mindanao there are also schools & malls ('coz there was one celebrity who thought that Mindanao is full of forests & mountains only. She was even shocked that we have schools here that are in the Top 20 in the country.). Tell him that the people here have also heard about internet, television & all those modern technology. :)

Im afraid that the construction of this new market may not materialize.

(mta)

Change to outside perception? your answer to your friend should have been the start bai..i mean, you are an Iliganon and you can't just let somebody say a stereotypical description of your hometown.

"Palaging binobomba" ? If we say "palagi", that's like every now and then something blasts off from our city when in fact it isn't. You could have just answered "a few years back"..or "that was before but now it is peaceful"..."there are even foreigners who prefer it than Manila"..

Korek.. When people ask me.. 'Diba Gensan maraming bombahan dun? As in warzone?' How about Manny Pacquiao? Kilala mo cya? taga-Gensan cya..'

It's really difficult kasi may image problem talaga tayo sa Mindanao. But instead of stressing the negative, why not focus on the POSITIVE.. Just like what our city is promoting na maganda cya.. Our slogan is 'MAgandang Gensan' which was coined a few years ago.. In fairness effective din cya.. :D

Exactly. Why is it when someone asks you about your hometown, they think of negative? Is this really a Pinoy mentality?

When I was having my internship in Manila, people frequently asked me dumb questions. "May kuryente ba duun sa Iligan?-- answer ko Iligan provides the majority of power supply in Mindanao. Don't be ignorant.

"May sasakyan ba duun sa Iligan? answer ko-- Hindi ako makarating dito sa Manila kung wala kaming sasakyan. Bobo ka ba?

"Saan ba yung Iligan? answer ko-- Paano ka nakapasa ng Araling Panlipunan o Sibika at Kultura ni hindi mo alam kung saan ang Iligan. Absenot ka ba?

Sometimes we are being look-down by those people there esp yung mga taga Manila.
