Tell your ignorant friend (just like the rest of the people living in Metro Manila who thinks Manila is the whole Philippines already) that there are more people who die an unnatural death (due to crimes) in Metro Manila everyday than the number of people who die in Iligan for an entire year because of crimes. :)

In addition, in case your friend is too ignorant & oblivious about the existence of other Filipinos living outside Metro Manila, tell him also that yes, here in Mindanao there are also schools & malls ('coz there was one celebrity who thought that Mindanao is full of forests & mountains only. She was even shocked that we have schools here that are in the Top 20 in the country.). Tell him that the people here have also heard about internet, television & all those modern technology. :)

kindly tell me the name of that celebrity. ill put her mouth right in her ass. i got this special hatred of the tagalogs who would come here in mindanao and acted like they came from a planet 100 years advanced and thought us like tribal people who are compel to wear clothes rather than g strings.

Korek.. When people ask me.. 'Diba Gensan maraming bombahan dun? As in warzone?' Sabi ko naman, part of Gensan's history ang bombing pero wala na cya ngayon. How about Manny Pacquiao? Kilala mo cya? taga-Gensan cya..'

It's really difficult kasi may image problem talaga tayo sa Mindanao. But instead of stressing the negative, why not focus on the POSITIVE.. Just like what our city is promoting na maganda cya.. Our slogan is 'MAgandang Gensan' which was coined a few years ago.. In fairness effective din cya.. :D

(mta)

hey guys!!
i know its really detrimental nor so devastating when describing iligan as part of the warzone!!but THAT REALLY IS THE WHOLE TRUTH!!!

Since when MILF occupide Iligan? I know Kauswagan and Kolambugan was occupied and the Philippine Marine Corps kicked their silly asses out.

If we define war zone as "a combat zone where military operations are coordinated" it is obviously that Iligan is not a war zone. But then, your mileage may vary.

I only remember that the Iligan was a war zone during the mutiny in year 1991. Saw the PAF T-28 Texan (as the masa called Tora-Tora), doing some bomb runs.

well, my mistake again when answering "PIRME", but isnt that frequent??ask yourselves??

And oh, the bombings. I count three in my lifetime since 1982: both in 2008 and one in 2009. Or I will make it four if I include the grenade explosion inside St. Michael's Cathedral on Easter Sunday of 1992 or 1991 (forgot the year).

See, the bombings are recent one thanks to an asshole named Kumander Bravo.

To summarize, Iligan has been bombed? Yes. Frequent? No.

Hell, Iligan is safer than they think, safer than Cebu, way safer than Manila.

Threat in New York and London is more likely higher than in Iligan still business is doing good.

Gibombahan man gani ang London underground (if you heard of 7/7) still daghan man japon manakay sa tube overcrowded pa man gani maski dili pa rush hour. Wala lng na sila kabalo sa tinood na sitwasyon sa Iligan mao ng in.ana sila ka praning..

I'm so into that statement.. It's insane to say that my place is a warzone. That's totally untrue. That's why we should have FEDERALISM.. We should go for Federalism in this country..let's make this division into something where our country can truly benefit.. (friendly competition)..

you have just enumerated some of them..isnt that more than one??so its frequent..technically speaking, more than one and has happened in short distances is frequent..i'll site the newest..last december 2008,when it almost happened at the same time(in unicity and near JBC i think)

ok,being considerate as well to those what you have felt, its like an insult for me too coz definitely im from iligan..the reason why posted that is to wake up all our thoughts and gather to build up a new idea for a better iligan..i dont want to have conflicts either..i just shared my thoughts!!no offense!!

2008? That was old news. The most recent one is someone attempting to destroy Agus Bridge (they failed the objective but gives a very serious inconvenience to all motorists and tourists).

But then, stating how frequent (is the bombing) depends on your mileage. Like for example, I consider frequent if there's a bombing every week.

If the objective of bombing in Iligan is to terrorize people (that how terrorists work, obviously), they FAILED. The next day, business in Iligan as usual, as if nothing happened.

Even if you say "technically speaking", someone's mileage still vary. If it is frequent to your point of view, someone says otherwise.

Unless you consider frequent as there's a bombing incident every six months (Is that really frequent? I let others decide.).

If you don't want to settle to my opinion, then it's fine with me. Besides, I don't settle to your opinion, either.

"..i want to see the progress of iligan in our two naked eyes dude!!ill ask you then, have you seen any improvements in our city done by our mayor?? "

I am sure there are many on-going projects and improvements going on that may not always be obvious to everyone, but if you take a real close look you may be surprised at what you can find !

Yes, I find many things happening in Iligan right here on the internet and I have been for about the past 4 years or more. You mention that you want to see these things with your " two naked eyes Dude ! " . Well, sometimes so do I. You live right there in Iligan, I live as far away from Iligan as just about anyone could and yet I see these things, I have traveled half way around the world to see some of these things with my own " Two Naked Eyes Dude " Yes, I do know of Improvements Mayor Cruz & Company ( Mayor Cruz & Company is the best way I can describe it ) have made that may have been overlooked or just not thought of by those that live there.

Here is just one example:

According to press releases and a book that was published not that long ago, the conditions at the Iligan City Jail were described as worse than deplorable. The City of Iligan Does Not run The Jail, it is run by The Philippines Bureau of Jail Management and Penology.

When a " situation " took place at the jail a few years ago when there was little or no water to even wash themselves with, let alone any to drink, and many other problems, who did the inmates cry out for ? The Warden ? The Dept of BJMP ? Superman ? No, they cried out for help to Mayor Cruz !

To refresh your memory here is a link to one of the press releases on this item.

http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/regions/view/20070322-56438/Hostage_drama_over_water_ends_peacefully_in_Iligan_jail

Things began to happen at The Jail after that, The City Govt. , various Civic organizations became involved as well as individuals which resulted 1 year ago in the Iligan City Jail being awarded " Best Jail In Northern Mindanao ". I think that is quite an accomplishment !

Via Youtube, here are just some of the visible results :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_e69IJjfPEY

Now you could say, well that's just a video which could have beed " doctored up " to appear like anything someone could want it to look like. Still skeptical ? well, why not take an in person look for youself because that is just what I did a couple of weeks ago, and for me I traveled half way around the world to take a look at this. Thats a lot more than just a couple of Jeepney rides for someone that lives in Iligan City !

Here is a small sample of some of the results that took place after Mayor Cruz listened to the cry of the inmates

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/PotableWaterDelivery.jpg

Where there was no water before, " now " potable water is regularly delivered !

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/WaterSupply.jpg

The potable water is stored here and I am sure it will quench the thirst of many and be used for cooking many things that might not have been available to the inmates at eating times a few short years ago ! ( No, it is not stored in those barrels on the ground, the Water Tanks are on top of the Tower along with that additional large blue one on the ground )

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/RecArea.jpg

I was informed during my visit that this recreation area not that long ago was just dirt. You can just imagine what it was after a heavy rain. I would say this is quite an improvement !

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/afirsthandlook.jpg

Yes, I traveled half way around the world to see this myself, In Person !

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/TalkingtotheInmates.jpg

I say hello to the inmates and convey a few of my thoughts for them to think about for the future.

As I mentioned above, Civic organizations in Iligan, Individuals and others got involved in improvements to the Iligan City Jail. In a discussion with the Warden, I asked if there may be something I could contribute to this on-going project. Amoungst other things, it was mentioned that there has been a severe lack of tables and seating on Visitors Day in the visitors area. I suggested that maybe I could run out and buy some tables somewhere in Iligan. It was suggested that rather than that, if I could supply the lumber, some of the inmates that are experienced carpenters would be able to build the tables allowing more table and seating per Peso Donated than if I just went out to a store or supply company and purchased manufactured items.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/SupplytheLumber.jpg

It took visits to several lumber suppliers in Iligan to find just the right kind of lumber.

http://i466.photobucket.com/albums/rr25/bobiniligan/FinalTest.jpg

Before I left Iligan to return home to New York, USA, all 10 tables were completed and ready for use. Construction of the benches followed and may already be in use by this date. Here I am along with one of the Iligan City website crew giving a " Test Seating " to one of the tables.

By my visual estimation, this should supply seating for up to 100 people, maybe even a few more.

This is just an example of " projects " going on in Illigan that some may not be aware of or may not realize that they are " Continuing Projects ". Many things can not be started and completed all in the same day, month or year for many reasons. There are ongoing projects in Iligan that people there, or for that matter from anywhere could become directly or indirectly involved in if they so choose.

Possibly from a distance I may see things differently from some that reside right in the middle of it all. When I read things like " What is The Mayor Doing " about this, or that , sometimes you just have to look further into things than they may appear on the surface.

To me, Mayor Cruz & Company are a lot more than " Just A Pretty Plaza " !

you'd like to CHANGE how others perceive your city but you confirmed his perception is true...

we can't blame if people do not know iligan, we really don't hear much about it, so it's not their fault... but you could have shown you friend pictures showing how normal life is in there, different from what he thinks of it. just think of it as a smaller picture of how foreigners perceive the Philippines. we know very well that life here is actually a lot better than what they think of. we can help by correcting misinformation, not by confirming them as true when it's not.

@Bob

The last time I paid a visit to Iligan City Jail was December 1997, that was our school outreach program (incidentally, one of my not-so-distant relatives was in jail, waiting for the verdict for a murder case). I would like to say, the improvement is huge. The walls wasn't painted the time I paid a visit. And there was no basketball court at that time.

I just wondering the current condition of the inmates. The last time was pretty crowded, but not jam-packed.

BobNewYorkUSA

@Donnex, Your Former classmate was recently transferred to the Iligan City Jail and is the Warden there. From what I was informed, a tour of duty for a Jail Warden is two years and then they are transferred or swaped with another Jail for another two year tour. In my various discussions with the Warden I feel he will do a good job there. Improvements will not be forgotten or overlooked and I am quite certain there are more good things to come.

There is some additional recent information on the Jail and it's new warden here, just scroll down the page of this link >>

http://rodbalendra.wordpress.com/

@Wind Shear, Far as I could tell and from what I saw, the overall condition of the inmates seemed ok to me although I am not an authority on this. Cell occupancy averaged about 17 inmates to a cell with a total population of somewhere around 300 if I remember correctly. If you have not looked at the Youtube link I put in my item about the Jail, if you take a look at it you will some of the many improvements that have taken place. Some have even been improved upon since that video was taken.

I was rather impressed with what I would call some of the " Arts & Crafts " type of things that are made by the inmates which they offer for sale on Visitors day and this gives them the chance to earn some money.

At the moment, Christmas Ornaments and related itmes are being made by inmates for the Christmas Season. As a sign of appreciation, I was given a very nice selection of hand made items to bring home with me, including a table top Christmas Tree made from empty plastic soft drink and water bottles. It survived the long journey home and stood up to all of the " Baggage Handlers " along the way ! Now, that's durability for you. I am rather amazed at this myself and it even falls into todays being " trendy " as the materials are now recycled into something useful for the Christmas Season ! These things are something I will always treasure as they are " Made In Iligan " .

Always something new

Things to look forward to

bai, IMO that fellow's view is strongly influenced by the MEDIA. He doesn't know where Iligan is... a place he's barely heard of. Then he just assumes it as "frequently attacked by bombings".

Since he doesn't know where Iligan is, and he has barely heard of it, how in the world can he know if this place is frequently attacked by bombings? It must that he takes an uneducated guess based on his assumption that Iligan is in Mindanao. And Mindanao has a quite negative impression on some people in Luzon that is brought about by irresponsible generalization of the MEDIA: Mindanao a warzone. Once a bomb took off in one part, the Media names the place as Mindanao, where it would sound like, "A bomb exploded in Mindanao"... tsk tsk ts.:ohno:

Now if you really want to change what others perceive about our cities, don't easily submit on to some people's assumption. Have them educated by the reality that most of Mindanao is peaceful. Iligan City is a peaceful city. And It's not an assumption.

ive been to iligan city jail sir..i admit i dont know that update..Thank God,mayor has a good move..but u know what sir,the promise of having an abundant water in our city is much older than me(more than decades)!!if you're just living in our city for more than a year and i hope you'll see..thats our primary concern.i admire mayor when it comes to the safe and security in the city, when it comes to developments, ill just say i dont know to play safe..i greatly appreciated the projects of cong. varf,i think he should be the next mayor..btw sir,Thank you for loving iligan!! "

I am well aware of the water situation in Iligan and I must admit I admire the people living there who have put up with it for as long as they have. As I don't have that much factual information of the situation in its entirety I can only speculate from what I do know about it.

I would " Guess " that the growth of the city in both industry and population over many years has long ago outgrown the originally designed capacity of the existing water distrubution system.

Due to any number of reasons major maintenance and upkeep of the system may have delayed , compounding the situation of the system being used far beyond its original intention.

The original sources of supply of water have been exceeded. New ones must be tapped, developed and then incorporated into the existing system. Before that can be done however, will many of the ageing water mains that have been operating at a presumeably lower pressure for a number of years be able to take the full pressure and capacity when they were new ? Every street in the city can not be torn up all at once to replace all of those water mains, even if the total amount of funding was available.

Then comes the addition of new water treatment or processing plants to insure the water can be directly consumed.

It is costing money to keep the existing water system going regardless of how ineffective it may seem at times, taking money away from what you might think would be money going towards supplying water to the entire city like the system may have once done.

Then it comes down to Funding, Budgeting, Finance and other related matters as to " Who is going to pay for restoring the city water system to meet with todays and future demand. These are things I can not even begin to comment on because I am not at all fimiliar with how these things work in your country. Politics and things like that I am really in no position to make any general comments on.

If you look back into postings here on SSC-Iligan, also some related video on Youtube and other websites there is a lot of information about the ongoing water supply situation in Iligan.

One impression I have of it is that it is like a " Connect The Dots " type of puzzle. Restoration of existing parts of the system are taking place here and there, new sources of water are in the process of being developed, but it takes all of these " Dots " to be connected and designed to work together to fully restore full time water and the appropriate pressure to every water faucet in Iligan, the way it really should be.

I can easily at least begin to understand how frustrating this is to the residents of Iligan in being surrounded by waterfalls, rivers flowing through the city and at times even overflowing, but without an adequit supply of water to have water flowing out of the faucets or everyone being able to flush their toilets without having to pour water into it from a rain barrel or other alternative source.

Is Iligan the only city in Mindanao or for that matter in The Philippines with a water situation like this ? I don't know for sure but I don't think it is.

Another thing to consider, when the water system really is restored to full operation, will the existing city sewage system be in a condition to handle taking away the used water ? If you greatly increase the input ( water ) and the output ( sewage system ) can not handle it that creates another problem too.

What I am still trying to figure out is how you use a water pump and water tank on a city water system which I know some people and places of business have there. For large commercial and industrial places I can see it but for residential use I am still wondering just how that would work. I have always lived in owning my own water system , a well, pump and tank of which when there are problems I bear the entire cost. The water may seem like it is free but getting it to come out of my faucets and shower are not LOL .

It is my general impression that major improvements to the water system of Iligan may be on the horizon but then again this is all " speculation " on my part from what I have read in the past few years and in conversations I have had with residents of Iligan during my visits.

Kaking International General Merchandise
A merchandiser for all seasons By Aileen Garcia-Yap
Cebu Daily News First Posted 08:18:00 11/29/2010

Another brand that has changed the landscape of Cebu's shopping is Kaking International which first opened in the busiest part of the Cebu downtown area in 2007.

Three years later, Kaking International proprietor Raymond Go now has a total of seven branches for his general merchandise store, two branches for his hardware store and a computer shop called Chipway Computer Shop.

Kaking General Merchandise sells homewares like kitchen utensils, bathroom must haves, small furniture like corner tables and computer tables, curtains, lightings and many more.

Kaking General Merchandise stores are located on Osmeña Boulevard corner Jakosalem Street, another on Osmeña Boulevard corner F. Gonzales Street, 138 Mall, Parkmall in the North Reclamation Area, one in Lapu-Lapu City, and two in Cagayan de Oro City.

Best bargains

On the other hand, Kaking Hardware which is located on Plaridel Street in Cebu City sells the best bargains of tiles and other home improvement needs. It has a branch in Cagayan de Oro City.

The Chipway Computer Shop is located near the General Merchandise store branch in Osmeña Boulevard corner F. Gonzales Street.

For Go, the fast growth of his brands was fueled by the huge mass of people who still believe in practical shopping.

According to Jean Siacor, who manages the 138 Mall in Colon where one of Go's Kaking General Merchandise store is also located, Go's stores boost of imported products at pocket-friendly prices.

“He is also very well known for his homewares, school supplies and his hardware sells the cheapest hardware materials in town,” Siacor said.

Following the principle of purposive and practical shopping, Kaking brands usually sell products that are in season.

Frequently visited

“For shoppers, they usually go to stores where they know they can really find what they need especially during specific periods like school opening or Christmas and Kaking is one of the frequently visited stores in Cebu,” she said.

Choosing the location for his stores is also a key factor for their success as the location also defines which target market a specific outlet caters to. This is how Go also manages stocks and decides on which products to sell in that area and how they are priced.

“For the branches near Sto. Niño Church, the products are usually cheaper while those in the Parkmall are a bit higher with more premium products also displayed because the market classification is higher than those in the downtown area,” she said.

Despite the price variations, the management assured that its products look more expensive than their actual cost.

“This is because we source our products from China, Singapore and some local which are picked carefully so that they will still sell when sold to the stores,” she said.

This Christmas season, Kaking stores are even busier with many people hunting for this season’s needs like Christmas trees and decorations down to the gift items that people give to their loved ones.

“Here you don't have to spend as much as when you shop in the major malls. For P2,000 you can already have a 5 feet tall tree adorned with beautiful tree accessories and ICC marked Christmas lights,” Siacor said.

One of the best buys in Kaking General Merchandise Parkmall outlet are the action figures of some famous Japanese cartoons like the half or the full faced Kurusaki Ichigo of Bleach which costs only P120.

Christmas balls, a box of Christmas tree or star-shaped accessories are priced at P45 per pack of six and their five-foot tall Christmas tree made of nylon is priced at only P900.

Go's latest addition to his products at the General Merchandise store includes apparels and toys which are perfect gift ideas for kids.

Customer service

“One can also select from sets of kitchenwares and home accessories that are sold in the store at very affordable prices. It's actually among our best sellers for gifts this season,”she said.

Because the store is flocked by people whole year round, about 200 to 300 sales people are hired on a shifting schedule to assist customers.

“It's important to have customer service people even if this is a budget store because we still want to ensure satisfactory shopping experience to our customers,” she said.

According to Siacor, Go’s plans for the Kaking brand include opening more branches in other areas like Iligan City and in Davao City where they also see a huge market.

“He also plans to open somewhere in Tabunok to cater to the people from the south,” she said.

The city of waterfalls without any water... oh the irony.

But I believe the problem lies in the lack of money that will enable our infrastructure to improve. Our water bills are cheap, but it comes with the price of cheap service. I don't think government alone can solve this (how many mayors have gone by and said they will solve this?). I believe privatization is the way to go, but I know many people will complain and say they cannot afford the rise in prices. But I'd rather have someone like MVP take over our NAWASA and provide a better service to everyone.

Is there a business directory or web site to find service companies in Iligan? I can usually find what I need by friends and family references, but not always. Like now, I am looking for someone to pressure wash the house and not havin any luck.

As to the water situation, I hope it is not privatized. Our line has very low pressure, and even though it is cheap there are many illegally tapped into it. That results in leakage, possible contamination. But water is such a basic right and necessity. The world is full of privatization of water infrastructure (primarily by the French), and never for the better for the lower financial classes. It is a difficult position for sure, but work through it. Don't sell out that refreshingly cold and delicious Iligan water! You don't know what you got till its gone (or sold out)!

I don't even know if there is a sewage system, but even if there is the vast majority of houses are septic tanks. But either way, increased pressure does not equate to increased flow. Our water pressure (Suarez) is very low, so it just takes longer for the tank to fill and longer to water the garden. Higher pressure will cut the time down but not directly result in more water being used.

A water tank is filled with city water when pressure is up (or slowly if it never does). Then the head pressure from the tank, or head pressure augmented by a small pump brings the pressure up to a reasonable level. Simple and (relatively) inexpensive. We are just outside the planned upgrades, but in a few weeks I will be pressure testing the house plumbing to make sure it can handle a higher pressure.

In my part, I have been trying at any given chance, to educate my officemates or any acquintances here that Abu-Sayaff operations are only contained in the southernmost part of Mindanao Island. I always show them the map and point out Basilan. And then, most of them asked me, "it's just a small place, why can't your government "terminate" them?".

Thanks for the explanation. Let me see if I have this correct, the city water mains fill the tank, then either gravity or a pump give it the pressure to be available at somewhere near a " Normal " pressure at the faucets and other things it is needed for in a house or building. Normal residential water pressure where I live in the USA is considered to be 30 to 50 PSI ( pounds per square inch ). I don't know how it is expressed in Metric, if that is how it is calculated there.

On my first visit to Iligan, I could not help but notice places selling water tanks and pumps. I liked the appearance of those tanks too which I would guess on the exterior are polished stainless steel. At the time, to me, it just looked a bit out of place to have places selling things like that where there is a city water system. I soon found out though.

best thing to pressure wash your house is just to buy the pressure washer, you'll eventually recover your cost by using it regularly.

on your second point. i must say that the government is having a dilemma on this. if the government continues to subsidize the water system; namely installation, operation, and maintenance, it takes away money from other projects like road repairs, public market maintenance, and social services like the city hospital. for example, the 500M loan of the government for the water expansion and rehabilitation project, will eventually be paid with our tax money. money which could have been used to improve public infrastructure like the pala-o market, which is in dire state since the fire gulped 2 of its 4 buildings a long time ago. recent public releases by the city hall that it can only make a P10 million pesos budget for 2011 for repair.

it would have been more desirable for the waterworks to operate as an independent government controlled corporation like the metro cebu water district. however, bigger cities like metro manila opted in the end to lease the franchise to operate to private corporations because the local government could not cope up with the management. metro manila residents formerly used to get up at 2-3 in the wee hour of the morning to get water (even with the use of water pumps). and recently, metro cebu is now having initial talks with the ayala group for bulk water supply.

we really don't want water to be so expensive, but hey, how many years would we want to wait for free flowing water. those who can afford it, eventually use water pumps, but don't you think the electricity used in the pump can be treated as water cost too? so, it makes water expensive in the end. specially for those families buying bottled / or refilled-gallons from purification water stations.

so which would you prefer my friend?

You're right! We only look at the cost of our water bill at face value and think it's cheap. We forget to account the other charges such as electricity, and not to mention the time spent in waiting for water to flow (hence, losing productivity). In the long run, we're losing money at our supposed savings.

Source: PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p101203.htm&no=C3)

The fast-rising province of Lanao del Norte is all set to host the biggest motocross event in the country. More than 300 riders from all over the Philippines are expected to participate in the two-day competition that will start December 11, 2010 at the Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex, Tubod town.

Six riders from the American Motocross Association have also expressed their commitment to come to this province and pit their racing skills against local superstars like Glenn Aguilar, Jovie Saulog and Donark Yuson.

Expected to see action in the Lanao del Norte International Motocross Invitationals are Daniel Blair, Tiger Lacey, Santos C.S., Gayan Sandaruwan, James Robinson and Ron de Jesus.

"This event will solidify the title of Lanao del Norte as the Motocross Capital of the Philippines," Information Officer Lyndon Calica said.

The province has been regularly hosting national motocross events in partnership with SEL-J Sports since the completion of its world-class racetrack early last year.

"The race track here is fantastic by local and international standards. Very technical, yet very safe. Definitely, Lanao del Norte is home to the best motocross track in the Philippines today," declared SEL-J Race Director Bobby Orbe.

Among the teams that will vie for the championship trophy are Quick Flight, Team Pacquiao, KTM Access Plus. FastLane, Therasil SEL-J, and several others in Mindanao led by Team Sultan Naga Dimaporo (SND).

Top local riders from the National Capital Region, Cebu, Puerto Prinsesa, Tuguegarao, Davao, Nueva Ecija, Cavite, Dumaguete, Iloilo, Bukidnon, La Union, Ilocos Sur, Bicol, Sorsogon, Laguna, Bulacan, Batangas, Surigao, Ozamiz, Pagadian and Sultan Naga Dimaporo have also declared their participation in the contest.

Riders will be competing in 15 categories: Intermediate Category, 65 cc & 85cc Categories, Novice Prod B Category, Beginner Local Open Enduro Category, Ladies Category, Beginner Open Production, 50cc Category, Executive A Category, Novice Open Production, Underbone, Executive B Veterans Category, Novice Local Open Enduro Category, Executive C Category, and crowd favorite Pro-Lites Category.

The provincial government has consistently given the biggest cash prizes for winners in previous motocross events.

"We want to see Lanao del Norte become the sports mecca of the country. Every sport has a home here in our province," Governor Khalid Dimaporo concluded. (VNL/PIO-LDN)

This was the third Spanish fort constructed in Iligan (Fort St. Francis Xavier, the first fort was erected in 1642). It is sometimes referred to as Fort Malcanan. Governor General Ramon Blanco and Valeriano Weyler repaired it after the 1888 and 1898 campaigns, respectively. It was washed away by the destructive flood of 1917. It stood on the eastern bank of the Iligan River in the area where the present Philippine National Bank stands.

The Kiosko

This octagonal structure served as the place where VIP’s were honored during ceremonies such as the Commonwealth Day celebration. In the summer months before the war, the Iligan youth would engage in singing and rondalla contests. Evenings were made memorable by the scent of jasmine trees that lined the sides of the Plaza. Spanish land posts lit up the area.

Reportedly constructed in 1921, names of the past town president mayors (the last entry being that of then Ll. Badelles Sr.) could be found at the base of the Kiosk. It gave way to "modern city" in the mid - sixties.

This was the façade of St. Michael’s School taken between 1938- 1941. The Jesuits who were assigned in the town of Iligan built the school in 1941. At first was exclusive for boys but later girls were admitted. English and Spanish were among the student’s first subjects. An extension of the small building was made later to accommodate the increase in student population. The buildings were taken by the Japanese Imperial Army and were made its headquarters and garrison. A number of Filipino civilians, as well as soldiers were executed here. The Sisters went back to Manila and while others remained hidden in different parts of Mindanao. Upon the arrival of the Americans the school buildings served as a hospital and refugee center for the war victims. In 1946, these buildings were taken back by the Jesuits.

I was going to mention @jo3l if he wants a good way to describe Iligan to those not familiar with it, or those who may question what is really there, that there are many youtube videos showing many aspects of Iligan City. As a good way of replying to someones inquirey, just send a few links to some of the many promos on youtube about Iligan.

A couple of years ago one of the regular posters did a series of four of them. One of the more recent ones I really liked is the " Bring Home A Friend " video on Youtube

Iligan Christmas Candy Wonderland to open Dec. 15

Iligan City (8 December) -- The city will soon embrace a unique way of celebrating the Christmas season this coming December 15 to 22, 2010 at the Pryce Properties, Tubod highway, this city.

City Councilor Marlene L. Young, the event chairperson, said this activity has never been tried anywhere in the Philippines--incorporating our traditional way of celebrating Christmas with something novel and exciting.

With City Councilor Ruderick C. Marzo and Rosanna C. Belmonte (wife of Congressman Vicente "Varf" F. Belmonte), as co-chairpersons, express their hopes to attract all sectors of the community including domestic and foreign tourists.

"This is a family-oriented affair, but on the other hand, the city would like to project its native food products specifically candies, chocolates, cakes and other delicacies for livelihood opportunities, to promote tourism and to develop and enhance the city's image as a place to visit and enjoy for residents and visitors alike," Councilor Young added.

Aside from merrymaking, the event organizers hope to draw the crowd's attention to the participants' special creations - like Candy Houses, Christmas Lanterns, and Christmas Trees -- wherein they will be competing for the prizes.

We are grateful to the participants who have responded to our invitation to join the first ever Christmas Candy Wonderland in Iligan, expressed Young.

"This is an open competition, thus, we still accept entries from the local entrepreneurs, companies and/or establishments within the locality, together with the participation of some private and public schools, national line agencies, non-government organizations (NGOs), the city government, and the city's 44 barangays as well," said the lady councilor.

We will be expecting a huge crowd to witness the grand opening on December 15, at 5:00p.m., having a countdown as the Christmas Candy Village will be officially lighted. (Jun Cabilla/PIA LDN)

(boy decena)

SM Mall Iligan is just wishful thinking. I just checked on it on SM's website and there was no report about it.

Meantime, XBG is constructing a 4-story grocery store along Tibanga Highway. I guess the Iliganons would have to be contented with that for the time being.

Davao city 911

The 911 Center in Davao is in charge of dispatching all of the emergency services in Davao, everything from Police to Medical Services.* The people at 911 own and operate 19 Ambulances and they have paramedics to handle services while en-route to the hospital facility.* One thing that was quite impressive is that all services offered by 911 are free for the public.* 911 can also be accessed through any land line telephone, and also through each of the cellular networks in Davao City.

March 2009 a friend who lives in the Philippines had some health problems.* He texted me and asked if there is 911 in the Philippines.* I told him that it is only available in Davao, but now that I thought about it, there are a couple of other cities that have it too.* Here in Davao, though, we have a full compliment of paramedics and everything necessary for emergency response.* This is an important consideration when you are deciding where you might live in the Philippines.* Are emergency services available, and can they offer quick service when needed?* Because of this inquiry, I decided to feature this post again so that people could see what kind of services are available in Davao City.
Two weeks ago, I made a visit to the Davao City 911 Center with a group that I belong to called “Friends of Mindanao.”* The group visit to the 911 Center was arranged by my friend, Rick Bowden.* Rick is a neighbor or Mario Monsanto, who is the Chief Operating Officer of the Davao City 911 Center.* Mario reports directly to Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
I can’t describe how impressed I was with the 911 Center, it is so modern, well staffed, and the personell are very efficient.* The training that they 911 people recieve is very thorough and up to date, and their professionalism was very clear to see.
At this time, Davao is one of only a handful of Cities in the Philippines that have 911 Emergency Services.* Currently other such centers are operated by Makati City (part of Metro Manila) and by Cebu City.* Iligan City is currently working with Davao to learn the ins and outs of setting up such a system there.

If you would backread a little bit, someone has already claimed to have a mom who brokered Pryce property in Tubod to SM. As it turned out, the report was just a hoax.

There is no SM in Iligan for the time being (and it may not even be in the expansion plan yet). Let's deal with that. Maybe in the future there will be. But at the moment, there is none. There is Gaisano Mall however. If you want a spacious shopping center in Iligan, I guess you have to be contended with Gaisano Mall. Otherwise, large malls abound in CdO, a city only about an hour-drive away from Iligan. Having said that, Iligan is progressing, and it's not impossible for a large mall developer to establish presence in Iligan in the future.

I heard about SM putting a mall in our city and that was 15 to 20 years ago but we know that they will be putting the mall sooner, maybe 5 to 10 years from now.

Marveling at Maria Cristina

Lots of local color, delicious ‘lechon,’ and the fabled waterfalls are enough reason to ‘bring a friend’ to Iligan City

THE TOURISM slogan “Huwag maging dayuhan sa sariling bayan” has become a platitude that seems to have largely fallen on deaf ears.

The Department of Tourism can’t do it alone. It should be supported by other government agencies; then it wouldn’t have to spend millions of pesos on a silly slogan.

All you may need could be a cheap flyer with the simplest message, such as: “Bring home a friend to Iligan City.”

This is a City Tourism Office campaign inviting people to personally promote Iligan to local and foreign friends, associates and relatives, and to enjoy discounts from hotels, inns, restaurants and other participating outlets (for details, call tel. no. 063-2213426).

Iligan was once part of Lanao del Norte until it became a chartered city on June 16, 1950. It is one of the major urban centers of Mindanao, with a land area of 81,337 ha (37 percent used for agriculture), 44 barangays, 14 industries, and a population of 308,100.

Located outside the country’s typhoon belt, it is one of the most touristy places in Northern Mindanao. It has been billed as the City of Magnificent Waterfalls, including the majestic Maria Cristina Falls.

Residents take pride in telling visitors their city is home to sculptress Julie Lluch, basketball player Cyrus Baguio, actors Junix Inocian and Florendo Obach, singer Nikki Bacolod, and 2009 nursing board exam topnotcher Clarice Bontol.

It is also the home of famous delicacies: Cheding’s Peanuts, Sunburst Fried Chicken, suka pinakurat (spiked vinegar), and Iligan lechon.

The city also produced last year the biggest mango in the world, certified by Guinness, at 12 in. long, 7 in. in diameter, and weighing 3.5 kg—the first time the Philippines broke the world record in the Fruits category.

Probably the biggest damper for tourists is that there is no direct flight to the city. They have to disembark at Cagayan de Oro Airport in Misamis Oriental and travel an hour and a half by land to Iligan, or if via Davao, eight hours.

More reassuring is that decent abodes are everywhere, from affordable inns to exclusive homestay complexes, from Celadon Pensionne House in Pala-o (near Iligan Medical Center), to Cheradel Suites in Villaverde (across La Salle Academy).

Whirlwind of activities

Certainly the best time to visit is during the month-long celebration of the Diyandi festival in honor of patron St. Michael the Archangel, whose feast day is Sept. 29. This year’s theme: "Wara-wara sa Iligan—ali na!” (Roaming in Iligan—come!)

The moment we arrived for a recent five-day visit, we were whisked off by tourism operations officer Pat Noel to trek down a ravine to see the hidden Tinago Falls, where tourists were picnicking on the shoal and rafting on the lagoon; then to Maze Parks & Resort, for lunch of authentic Cebuano humba; and Timoga Swimming Pools, 17 of them, fed by natural springs.

Below the pools, across the road, is the Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House, a sprawling structure in International Moderne built in 1950 by former President Arroyo’s grandfather, the district engineer who supervised the construction of the Iligan-Zamboanga Road.

On its well-manicured lawn are Little Gloria’s Playhouse and a bronze statuary of her as a girl on a swing, under a tree, guided by her father.

The Kasadya street dancing the following day, which took over the city’s major arteries, was also a multi-tournament of floats, street performances, and tartanilya painting. It culminated at high noon with the awarding ceremony at Anahaw Amphitheater, arguably the largest outdoor amphitheater in Mindanao, with seating capacity of 5,000.

At Rizal Park that evening, in a fine drizzle, we witnessed the annual performance of “Comedia de San Miguel,” depicting in plaintive sing-song, stark action, and simple yet spectacular effects, the astral battle between St. Michael the Archangel and Lucifer and his cohorts. Iligan is said to be one of only two places in the country where this primitive form of theater is still being continually performed, the other being Bulacan.

The Parada de San Miguel the next day was a long, long parade of civic and government organizations. It seemed every unit in the city numbering more than five was represented, from the Office of the Mayor to the brigade of street-sweepers.

At the approach of the float of Miss Gay Iligan and his consorts, looking flamboyant yet serene, a youngster standing by his motorbike on the roadside blurted: “Bongga kaayo! Bongga kaayo!”(Cebuano equivalent of “major-major,” said twice and without any apparent irony.)

Secret of the ‘lechon’

On the morning of the fiesta, after the procession from St. Michael’s Cathedral, we drove to one barangay to learn the secret of the Iligan lechon. Here, rows and rows of houses were doing it on yards and pits; people were scampering around trying to beat lunchtime; vans, jeeps and cars were coming and going to get or deliver orders.

One man told us they were migrants from Cebu—and that was how the special technique of roasting the pig was brought over to Mindanao. So there’s more to it than lemon grass and local herbs in the pig’s belly; there’s also the special way of basting the skin. The Iligan lechon, in fact, is the same as the famous lechon Cebu, the savory kind that needs no sauce.

If it comes to that, the perfect dip would be suka pinakurat, the hot sweetish table vinegar named after a local dish of baboy sulop (wild boar) stewed in kulikot chili and vinegar fermented from tuba (coconut wine)—called pinakurat (“startled,” referring to both the frightened boar and the kick of the spices).

Iligan may not be as cosmopolitan in fine dining as neighboring Cagayan de Oro City. It has only one real café, an upscale hangout called Aruma Café. But the range of dining options is admirable: Filipino cuisine at Gazpacho’s; Southeast Asian at Iliganon; Chinese at Cheradel Suites; American and Continental at Highway 30; snacks and booze at Calda Pizza.

For pasalubong, the reliable stand-by is Cheding’s Peanuts on Sabayle Street, a one-stop shop carrying not just peanut products but also delicacies from the regions, such as Cagayan de Oro’s pastel and Davao’s durian hopia.

Or, when in season, lanzones is on every sidewalk at P25 a kilo. Several towns in Lanao del Norte and Misamis Oriental are already growing this fruit. In fact, during its Lanzones Festival, Camiguin is importing from them to boost its supply.

Fabulous sight

It has to be said: The clincher that made us decide to venture to these parts was Maria Cristina Falls, which had intrigued us since grade school when we saw a picture of it in our Social Studies textbook.

When we finally came upon the fabled waterfall, it wasn’t quite the Niagara, but it still wowed us, as it cascaded 320 ft down (twice the height of the Niagara) on a sheer cliff to Agus River, the only outlet of Lake Danao flowing 36 km north to Iligan Bay.

Of the six hydroelectric plants along the Agus, its site was the first to be constructed and developed, during the time of President Elpidio Quirino in the ’50s, accounting for the city’s early boom. It now has the NPC Nature’s Park, with ostriches, crocodiles, monkeys, a butterfly sanctuary, a zipline.

But the twin falls are said to be losing steam through the years. We urge tourists to make the effort to see this fabulous sight before global warming and human foibles reduce it to a drip and a trickle.

House probes 'sukang pinakurat' trade war
By RG Cruz, ABS-CBN News
Posted at 12/14/2010 5:09 PM | Updated as of 12/14/2010 5:11 PM

MANILA, Philippines - Competition has apparently turned sour literally between a condiments giant and a startup competitor over “sukang pinakurat”, a special variety of spicy vinegar.

Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño, chairman of the House of Representatives committee on small business and entrepreneurship development, said his committee will probe how one of the giants in the condiments industry has allegedly been allowed to strangle a small, Mindanao-based suka manufacturer.

Casiño said he has filed House Resolution 577 to investigate the violations committed by Southeast Asia Foods, Inc. (SAFI), makers of Datu Puti Pinoy Kurat Spiced Tuba Vinegar, of the tradename and trademark of Green Gold Gourmet Foods, Inc., original maker of the Suka Pinakurat brand.

SAFI is listed as the manufacturer and distributor of Datu Puti Lines, Mang Tomas, Golden Fiesta Cooking Oil, and Nelicom Lines, among others. It is said that SAFI is lording it over the condiments market.

In contrast, GGGFI is a small suka manufacturer based in Iligan City. Its main product is the Suka Pinakurat, which they registered with the Philippine Intellectual Property Office in 2006, Australia’s Intellectual Property Office in 2008 and the United States Patent Office in 2009.

In a statement and in a press conference with House media, Casino said“Datu Puti Pinoy Kurat” appears to violate Section 123 of the Intellectual Property Code (Republic Act 8293) which states that a mark "cannot be registered if it is identical or confusingly similar to an already registered mark. As such, it may be considered a trademark infringement, which is a form of unfair competition.”

"In effect, DTI and [Intellectual Property Office] has allowed SAFI to grossly push aside a successful small business brand by eating into its hard-earned niche in the local and even the international market,” he added.

Casino said the DTI should prohibit Datu Puti Pinoy Kurat from selling their version of Suka Pinakurat until the matter is resolved. "It is only right that we hear this to come up with new policies that will prevent big businesses from eating up the success of small corporations,” he said.

Solon defends Mindanao’s original ‘sukang pinakurat’
by Mindanao Insider on Wednesday, December 15, 2010 at 10:31am

A militant party-list congressman is coming to the rescue of a Mindanao food company that supposedly originated "sukang pinakurat."
*
Bayan Muna Rep. Teddy Casiño, chairman of the House of Representatives committee on small busi-
ness and entrepreneurship development, said his committee will probe how one of the giants in the condiments industry has allegedly been allowed to strangle a small, Mindanao-based suka manufacturer.
*
He identified the* Mindanao-based manufacturer as* Green Gold Gourmet Foods, Inc. based in Iligan City. Its main product is the Suka Pinakurat,* registered with the Philippine Intellectual Property Office in 2006, Australia’s Intellectual Property Office in 2008 and the United States Patent Office in 2009.
Casiño said he has filed House Resolution 577 to investigate the violations allegedly committed by Southeast Asia Foods, Inc. (SAFI).
*
SAFI is listed as the manufacturer and distributor of Datu Puti Lines, Mang Tomas, Golden Fiesta Cooking Oil, and Nelicom Lines, among others. SAFI is known to lord over the condiments market.
*
In a statement, Casino said “Datu Puti Pinoy Kurat” appears to violate Section 123 of the Intellectual Property Code (Republic Act 8293) which states that a mark "cannot be registered if it is identical or confusingly similar to an already registered mark. As such, it may be considered a trademark infringement, which is a form of unfair competition.”
*
"In effect, DTI and [Intellectual Property Office] has allowed SAFI to grossly push aside a successful small business brand by eating into its hard-earned niche in the local and even the international market,” he added.
*
Casino said the DTI should prohibit Datu Puti Pinoy Kurat from selling their version of Suka Pinakurat until the matter is resolved. "It is only right that we hear this to come up with new policies that will prevent big businesses from eating up the success of small corporations,” he said.

That is sad to hear, but here in the US, Pinoys always patronize the Original Sukang Pinakurat from Iligan. I was in Missouri and you can always find this product in an Asian store.

Kana hinuon wala kay dagko man na..Pero ang city streets? that should be left to the CEO's care. Ayahay kaayo sila mag-agad ra sa lone district para sa rehab aning mga dalan sa syudad. Rehabilitatio and maintenance ilaha na. Okay lang ang lone district mosugod og semento. Our local offices should their work and work their purpose. Basin ang mahitabo ani, magsige nalang og hangad sa budget sa congressman para aning mga butang nga dapat ang LGU ang mag-gasto.

i agree tonzi. the bulk of the city budget is spent on maintenance and operations. halos ang kita sa syudad gi-sweldo lang sa mga empleyado. but there's a ray of hope next year, when the city government shall have stopped implementing what the call so as "equal share" to the barangays. hopefully this consolidated budget will be allocated primarily to targeted priority projects by the city like road concreting. gamay ra daw kita ang siyudad karon, ang atong city ordinance sa tax and licenses kinahanglan na daw i update, kay na erode na sa inflation. si konsehal marzo ang gitakdang nagtuki aning butanga, og kahigayonan nga naghimo og series of public hearings para ma-amendahan kini sa tukmang kantidad nga angayan ibayad para sa mga taxes, permits, og licenses.

unlike the honorable congressman who has the bulk of his PDAF for projects, because he only maintains an small number of staff to pay for their salaries.

mao na ni akong giingon sa una ba, there is no way that DATU PUTI can coin the word "KURAT" and use it into their vinegar brand. Sukang Pinakurat and its owners have the right to ask for the DTI's concern on this matter.

"Pinakurat" is a unique name gyud na coined from how a dish is prepared which is the baboy sulop.

Datu Puti is very malicious on coining such word. Maybe because they found out that this "small" vinegar from Iligan is already exporting abroad and they want to get a slice of that too.

I am trying to figure out what the Candy Wonderland is, is it a display or is it a display and an event where people get Christmas Candy and other festive seasonal delights ?

The part about this that just slightly alters my comprehension of this beautiful scene, is imagining being there in your kind of climate where to me, I always accociate Christmas with cold temps and maybe even some snow.

Temps here have been about Minus 10 Deg C. ( between 10 and 20 Deg F ) and it has been more than once that I have thought about the climate in Iligan I experienced in what seems like just a few weeks ago.

This year I have my " Made In Iligan " Christmas tree. Maybe that will warm things up for me a bit just thinking about it.

P2.6-B Agus 6 rehab gets RDC-X approval
By NELSON V. CONSTANTINO, Editor-in-Chief

THE Regional Development Council in Northern Mindanao is pushing for the uprating of the aging Agus 6 hydroelectric power plant to further extend its economic life for another 30 years and eventually solve the power shortage being experienced in Mindanao.

The proposed rehabilitation would cost at least P2.633 billion which will be sourced from the internal cash generation of the National Power Corp. (Napocor).

The amount would include the project base costs, price contingency and interests during construction, for this run-of-river type of hydroelectric power plant located in Brgy. Fuentes, Iligan City.

National Economic and Development Council-10 Regional Director Leon M. Dacanay, Jr. said the uprating project is one of the priority power development generation projects included in the 2004-2010 Regional Development Plan of Northern Mindanao.

Found to be economically and financially viable, the project aims to increase Agus 6 HEP’s rated capacity by 12.0MW, from 50.0MW to 62.0MW, increase its dependable capacity from 25MW to 35MW and to improve the plant factor to 57 percent.

Dacanay, vice-chairperson of RDC-X, said the Agus 6 HEP Units 1 & 2 were commissioned in 1953 and 1956, respectively, but have not undergone any major rehabilitation other than the replacement of locally fabricated, spare parts and materials and regular repair and maintenance since their commissioning dates.

Previously approved by NEDA and the Investment Coordination Committee (ICC) in December 2006, implementation of the proposed uprating project had not taken off because of failures in the bidding process.

Since the project had not been implemented within 18 months from its approval by ICC, that year, it has been re-submitted by NPC for ICC review, in accordance with its guidelines and procedures, after which it got the RDC-X endorsement, last year, Dacanay said.

Earlier, Napocor President Froilan A. Tampinco has been pessimistic that funds for the project would not be available to pursue the Agus rehabilitation.

Tampinco said the rehabilitation of the Agus-Pulangui complex is expected to bring the power plants back to its full capacity of 700 megawatts (MW) and 255 MW include dredging.

“For the rehabilitation works that is needed to bring up additional capacity for our hydropower facilities in Mindanao, it will cost around P2 billion to put in an additional of about 100 MW to 200 MW capacity.” Tampinco said, “But if we would like to add or update some of the facilities, for instance the Pulangui [power plant] which will include the cost of dredging, then we’re looking at spending about P3 billion.”

He said that Napocor is evaluating how to go about the rehabilitation.

Since Napocor is disallowed by law to raise funds for power generation projects, Mr. Tampinco said funds for rehabilitation of Agus and Pulangui will have to be sourced through the Power Sector Assets and Liabilities Management Corp. (PSALM).

PSALM President Emmanuel R. Ledesma, Jr. said that PSALM has not provided for rehabilitation costs.

“Except for the regular operations and maintenance of Agus-Pulangui, we have not provided for rehab cost in the 2011 budget. We will need supplemental budget for any major rehab and additional borrowings to finance that budget,” Mr. Ledesma said.

“Raising funding for the Agus-Pulangui rehab will also depend on the directions of the board and should be considered in our financing and liability management programs,” he added.

The Agus hydropower plant has seven units with a combined generation total of 700 MW.

The first of the seven units was constructed in 1953, and the newest one started operation in 1992. Agus is located in Lanao del Sur.
The Pulangui hydropower plant in Bukidnon generates 255 MW and began operations in 1985.

Currently the power plants are operating at a derated capacity of around 200 MW to 300 MW.

The Agus-Pulangui power complex supplies about 55% of the power supply of Mindanao.

Both hydroelectric plants were scheduled to be privatized next year but the House Committee on Energy resolved to put on hold the privatization of the complex.

Lanao del Norte exceeds revenue targets

Cattle buyers need to pay a shipping permit fee for cows bought in Lanao del Norte and transported to other provinces. This fee is pegged at P50/head and collected by the Provincial Treasurer’s Office

Tubod, Lanao del Norte – The Lanao del Norte LGU again exceeded its local revenue collection targets for calendar year 2009.

This was learned during the 4th Quarter Regional Conference and Workshop of Treasurers and Assessors of Region 10 held last December 13-15, 2010 at De Luxe Hotel, Cagayan de Oro City.

The provincial government overshot its collection in the Business and Other Taxes category by 134%, collected 744% of its targeted Fees and Charges, and exceeded its Economic Enterprise quota by 107%.

“We attribute this achievement to the strong political will of Gov. Khalid Dimaporo”, Provincial Treasurer Mildred Hingco said.

Another top performing LGU in the province with outstanding revenue collection is the interior town of Nunungan who also got 138% collection in the real property tax category.

This is the third year in a row that Lanao del Norte was awarded as one of the top achievers in tax collection by the Department of Finance Region 10.

“We call on all our taxpayers to continue supporting our government by paying the correct amount of taxes on time. This will ultimately translate to better services for the people”, Gingco concluded. VNL/GL/TJO

If you missed them in person or could not be there, here is some nice video of the event on Youtube in two parts.

The ooooohhhhsss and ahhhhas of the audience sound just about the same as here in New York when we have fireworks on the 4th of July, Independence Day. That is our major " fireworks " day of the year here.

thanks to "rhey0330" for posting this on Youtube to share some of " Christmas In Iligan " with the rest of the world. Many thanks also to all of those that posted the Christmas Candyland Exhibit at Pryce.

@ Alingatong, from some of the scenes in this video, it looks like I am not the only one that enjoys viewing the wires on the poles and some of the antennas on the rooftops.

On the part of Gmall Iligan...I can say it is well airconditioned but there are lots of details in the mall operations that they can improve more...and worse needs more attention on their services especially at the supermarket. As far as the whole mall is concerned, I think Gaisano is just keen on the "cover of the book" than the "contents" that it has. :ohno:

Shoppe 24, a "new kid on the block" 24-hour convenience store in Iligan, would have its 4th branch opened in the city by March of this year. It would be located along Tibanga-Tambo Highway right across H30.

On another news: Sports Buck KTV Bar in Tibanga will be adding 9 more rooms to accommodate the growing demands of Iliganons for a first-class and luxurious KTV facilities. On top of that, a billiard hall will also be added to the bar, which will be located on the 3rd floor of the building.

G-Mart, another newly established convenience store located in Gerona, Tambo, is now open and is actually adding more floorspace to accommodate more customers. (I saw Samuel Marata there last December 28 hanging out with his fellow La Sallites. He's actually taller than I thought.)

The developments that I'm seeing in Iligan, which is, in fact, stretching to all the outskirts of the city is getting very exciting. I'd love to see Iligan grow so that more jobs will be created.

Aboitiz obtains incentives for rehab of 2 ferry boats
by Julito G. Rada
Tuesday, January 11, 2011
Manila Standard Today

The Board of Investments has granted fiscal incentives to the P1.534-billion modernization project of Aboitiz Transport System Corp., the former shipping unit of Aboitiz Equity Ventures, documents from the agency show.

Aboitiz Transport is acquiring and rehabilitating two second-hand roll-on, roll-off vessels to be named M/V SuperFerry 20 and SuperFerry 21. The company acquired the two vessels, which were launched in 1992, from Japan in March 2010 at a total cost of P697.5 million.

The Maritime Industry Authority endorsed the modernization project in separate letters to the BoI last year. The two vessels are now undergoing rehabilitation in Keppel Shipyard in Batangas.

Aboitiz Transport plans to use the vessels in transporting passengers and cargoes from port to port, including Manila, Cebu,Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and other terminals after the rehabilitation.

The project will directly and indirectly employ 208 workers during operation. The investment of P1.534 billion covers pre-operating cost, lease of capital equipment and working capital, which will be funded by 75-percent loan and 25-percent equity.

Commercial operations will start in March this year.
