Iligan City Hall

The seat of Iligan's local government, built in 1957 on Buhanginan Hill, 130 ft. above sea level facing the downtown area. Buhanginan Hill is a favorite promontory for Iliganons for viewing the sunset or skyline of the city by night.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/Joshua8888/Iligan02.jpg

Maria Cristina Falls

The famous landmark of Iligan, located 8.5 kms away southwest of the city proper, is 320 ft. high and the veritable source of industrial life in the city. Its pristine beauty only seen today in old photographs has become a magical glow and an industrial lifeline through the turbines of the Maria Cristina Hydroelectric Plant, the first National Power Corporation's first of its six plants in the whole stretch of the Agus River. To see the falls in all its grandeur, arrangements should be made with the local NPC officials at its office in Ditucalan, 10 kms away.

Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation Park and Lagoon

Located on top of a hill within the Mabuhay Vinyl Corporation plant site, the small park rimming a lagoon is a burst of color and life. Visitors can go boating.

Iligan City Cathedral

Iligan City's grandest Christian Catholic Church. On top stands the tallest figure of Senior San Miguel - Iligan City's patron saint. It also have its beautifully crafted smoked glass of Senior San Miguel visible outside, and the life, death and resurrection of Christ inside.

^^here is Tinago Falls

_____________________________________________________________________

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/Joshua8888/Iligan06.jpg

Tinago Falls

The falls located in Buru-un, 13 km away from the city proper, is hidden in a deep ravine, cascading into a calm, deep and cool basin-like pool. It's deep, and one can't see anything below even with diving goggles. Swimming or just floating in it gives one a rare thrill. Actually, there's more than one waterfall. There's a main fall, and on each side are countless smaller ones, as though sprouting from everywhere. The span of these wondrous waters is so wide that it takes a super wide angle lens to capture all of them in one photograph.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/Joshua8888/Iligan05.jpg

Limonsudan Falls

The two-tiered falls is the country's, probably Asia's, highest waterfalls, with a total height of 870 ft. The lower cascade alone is higher than Maria Cristina. It is in Iligan's eastern part, close to the boundaries of Bukidnon and Lanao del Sur. Situated in the hinterland barangay of Rogongon, it is 54 kms away.

Dodiongan Falls

Located in Bonbonon, 14.5 kms away from the city, is a 65-foot high falls cascading down a concrete-like boulder. Its tranquil, cool water and lush vegetation is a real haven for nature lovers. The pool at the foot of the falls is very ideal for swimming.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c373/Joshua8888/Iligan08.jpg

Mimbalut Falls

A not-so-high yet mighty falls with a drop of 90 ft. and a width of 18 ft. It is located in Buru-un, 11 kms from downtown. It provides a very enjoyable swimming spot, the water being so cool. Mimbalut is probably the most accessible of Iligan's more than 20 waterfalls, being just a few hundred meters away from the highway.

The Kasadya

This is a yearly celebrated festival of the patron Saint of Iligan City, Saint Michael the Archangel, where the city is beautifully decorated. During this season, the city is crowded with people from all walks of life from all over the Philippines. It is also during this season that tourists from all over the world come to Iligan City to experience the Kasadya festival.

Excellent job there Joshua888!

I wonder if those pictures were not "doctored" because they appear too-good-to-be-true -- that's how I got struck by the beauty of the views on the pics.

Waterfalls do not come in bounty. There uniqueness are epitome of the wonders of God's creation -- so beautiful and overwhelming. That is why I am baffled why the local officials of the city of iligan are not promoting these wonders it bountifully has. i don't see how hard for them to draw tourists when they have something as gorgeous as those waterfalls, which according my knowledge, are counted more than 20(!!!).

FrancisXavier: Hi there, dude. It is my understanding that you are from CdO, and in which I would presume that you have at one point or another been to /pass by the city of iligan. If that is so, I’d like to ask you what you can say about the city’s current condition (progress, development, where it's going, etc). I'm particularly interested to know what the views of the people from our neighboring cities (Cdo, Butuan, Ozamis, Marawi, Pagadian, Dipolog, etc.) are, because their comments/remarks are, more often than not, do have an attachment of affection and concerns.

BTW, I'm glad how CdO has turned a 180 and emerged as one of the biggest and most progressive cities in this part of the Region. I wish the people of Cdo well. Let's all hope for a continued success of CDO.

Despite of its proximal presence to iligan which could have been the stumbling-block of iligan's progress (yeah, lame, I know, but many iliganons do think so), I am truly proud of the great stride CDO has attained in a so short span of time (CDO was quite laid back a few years back) and even with the little help from the NATIONAL government.

hmmmm...if I may recall my local geo lessons in elementary....
Butuan..Cagayan and Iligan, all three of them were created into cities at the same year.

these cities have progressed much in the early to late sixties when the Maria Cristina Hydro complex opened to service and thus earning Iligan City the Industrial hub of the South.....while this was happening her neighbors Cagayan and Butuan enjoyed economic boom at the time.....the heavy agro products flowing into Cagayan from Bukidnon have made the city attractive to industries that make agro crops to high value products....the opening of Kawasaki Steel....Delk Monte etc help the city grow.

Butuan at that time was its peak of logging boom....numerous paper and veneer and plywood and wood industries have sprung around its suburbs earning the city the Timber Capital of the Philippines. The establishment of NALCO, once touted as Philipines largest wood processing complex and PICOP Industries and the Sta Ines Industries are previous prime movers in the Butuan's erstwhile timber industry heydeys.

The growth of these cities was much bolstered with the construction of the Butuan-Cagayan-Iligan Highway....presntly Mindanao's busiest highway and shall be the future site of the long awaited Mindanao railway Project.

There are actually plenty of waterfalls and springs in Iligan City. The problem is, the City Government didn't utilize it much as tourist destination due to the war (against MILF) at that time.

Since the reopening of the largest steel plant in SEA, I hope my home city makes the greatest comeback. :-)

The city has its beginnings in the village of Bayug, 2.5 kilometers north of the present Poblacion. It was the earliest pre-Spanish settlement of native sea dwellers, known as Maragats. In the later part of the 16th century, they were subdued by the Visayan migrants from the island kingdom of Panglao. These migrants, led by Pedro Manuel Manook established Bayug as the earliest Christian settlement in the area sometime between 1597 and 1609.

Population growth and safety eventually forced the settlers to move to safer and better forts. One was built in 1632 and another in 1872. Both became the sites of the present Poblacion. From being merely a small district in the Department of Mindanao and Sulu, Philippine Islands in 1903, it grew into a municipality in the ten unified province of Lanao. On June 16, 1950, it became a chartered city by virtue of Republic Act 525 signed into by the late President Elpidio Quirino.

The utilization of the Maria Cristina Falls into a hydroelectric power generating plant in 1952, hastened the urbanization of the city. Industries were established and more people came to settle. The city marked its first one hundred thousand population in 1970, when it posted a population of 104,493. Twenty-five years later, in 1995, a total population of 203,004 was recorded. Simultaneous with its population growth, is the increase in the city’s revenue. In 1983, it was reclassified as a highly urbanized city due to its impressive collection performance.

These major developments in the city were made possible by able and hardworking leaders since its creation in 1898. Its first president under the Aguinaldo Revolutionary Government was Carlito Jariol who served from 1898 to 1900. Its first Municipal Mayor was Jorge Ramiro (1936-1940), while its first City Mayor was Benito Ong (1948-1953). Its longest serving mayor was Camilo P. Cabili, who served Iligan from 1960 to 1984 and from 1988 to 1992 while the shortest service was rendered by Esperidion Sagrado, who was appointed city mayor for the period July 15-17, 1992. Table 1.1.1 shows the List of Mayors of Iligan City since its creation.

For the past decade, the city has been the more important activity center in North Central Mindanao. It is the center of major industries, commercial and educational establishments. It was dubbed as the “Industrial Center of the South.” Recently, it has become a major tourist destination. Since its birth in the 16th century, it has remained a Visayan dominated area in this part of the country. It has, however, retained its role as a friendly neighbor to the cultural communities in its vicinities. It is identified as a growth pole in Mindanao.

GlobeQUEST offers wireless connectivity in schools, universities
By Ehda M. Dagooc
The Freeman 03/30/2006

GlobeQUEST, the corporate business group of Innove Communications, Inc. has penetrated schools and universities to provide wireless connectivity in the campuses.

As a pilot project, the company announced that the Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) will be the first university in the Visayas and Mindanao area to be provided with Wireless Fidelity (WiFi) facility networking standard which will allow its faculty, students and staff to connect to the Internet without cumbersome and expensive cables and wires.

MSU-IIT, an autonomous external campus of the MSU System with about 9,000 students enrolled per semester, is the first Wi-Fi-powered school project by GlobeQUEST in Visayas and Mindanao.

Under the agreement, GlobeQUEST has provided MSU-IIT with two circuits of Internet plus four access nodes in designated areas to give students and professors the ease and freedom to check their e-mail or surf the Web using their Wi-Fi-capable personal digital assistants or laptops.

MSU-IIT has chosen Wi-Fi as a way to improve student mobility while reducing infrastructure costs since it is much easier and cheaper to put in place wireless access points than rewire buildings on campus.

The move makes MSU-IIT at par with universities in more advanced countries like the US and gives it the distinction of being one of the early Wi-Fi adopters in the Philippines, an Innove Communications official announcement stated.

For Wi-FI, GlobeQUEST uses a wireless technology similar to a cell phone where roaming and being connected converge.

Wi-Fi enabled computers and PDA's send and receive data indoors and out, anywhere within the range of an Access Point or Base Transceiver. This technology is envisioned to provide business-to-business mobility, modifications, and growth.

A Wi-Fi network can be used to connect computers to each other, to the Internet, and even to wired networks which use 802.3 dubbed as the Ethernet.

Wi-Fi networks operate in the unlicensed 2.4GHz and 5GHz radio bands with an 11Mbps (802.11b) or 54Mbps (802.11g) data rate or with products that contain both bands (dual band) so they can provide similar performance equivalent to the basic 10BaseT wired Ethernet networks.

As of this time, piling for the foundation of Gaisano mall has been started. Specialty store like CITI Hardware has just finished its expansion (doubled its floor area) and another known specialty store HOME Plus has recently opened its door. Meron ding mga bagong colorful buildings na nag-open like UniCity ( another department store na kulay light green, orange, and yellow) Iligan Galaxy Xpress Mart (Blue and Yellow), merong isang building na malapit nang matapos na kulay Orange at Yellow. Masayang tingnan kasi it adds up color to the already colorful culture of Iligan. May mga itinayo ring bagong 24-hr Gasolines stations, mga bagong bihis na resto and bars. Sana tuloy-tuloy na ang development...

GRP-MILF OFFICIAL DENIES AGREEMENTS ON ILIGAN`S INCLUSION IN THE BANGSAMORO HOMELAND

By: CIO - MIS
April 27, 2006

Government of the Republic of the Philippines-Moro Islamic Liberation Front (GRP-MILF) Peace Panel Vice-Chairman Prof. Rudy Rodil strongly denied final agreements on Iligan City`s inclusion in the Bangsamoro Homeland.

During last Tuesday`s regular session, Prof. Rodil clarified to the City Council that the peace panel has not yet tackled matters concerning territories at some point of their negotiation process. He said that Mayor Celso Lobregat of Zamboanga City`s source of information is the position paper submitted by the MILF and not the official document. He, however, confirmed truth to the other features mentioned by Lobregat in his Executive Summary which was acquired by the local officials of Iligan.

Furthermore, the City Council of Iligan agreed to hold a special session to continue the deliberation of the Bangsamoro Juridicial Entity issue with Prof. Rodil on May 25, 2006 at 2:00 O`clock in the afternoon. Leaders of various sectors in the locality shall also be invited to witness Rodil`s presentation with the local legislators

----

Frankly, I don't like Iligan City and Lanao del Norte included in Bangsamoro since most of the people are Christians (especially the 1st Congressional District of Lanao de Norte).

I strongly agree.

I prefer Iligan being "The Sanctuary". A safe place of refuge and protection.

Gaisano mall is located in Brgy. Villa Verde adjacent to the cemetery. Yon yong old terminal ng Bachelor's Express and Super 5 Buses. As of this time, meron nang mga "piling equipments" sa area na makikita. Meron nga joke dito. Dalawang malls daw yong itatayo. Yong mall na nasa harap, Mall One at yong mall daw na nasa likod "Multo" kasi sementeryo.

I think there's already Gaisano there in Iligan, is this another Gaisano?

I have bought a pair of sandals in this Gaisano, my sandal got bust during my Tinago trek..

I can always remember dipping myself in that waterfalls.....we took a habal-habal ride to the interior then by foot downhill....you will be rewarded by Tinago's magnificent curtain of water.

Timoga springs are very cold, the water is running as if cascading from the tributaries of Maria Cristina pssing the Timoga and emptying towards Iligan Bay.

There's this barangay along the highway beyond national Steel where water simply tubod or leaks through the hilly side of the highway..

Two swimmers from Iligan City are now gearing up for this year`s South East Asian Games (SEAG) to be held in Indonesia after beating other aspiring amateurs from different parts of the country.
Twelve-year-old Max Dale Manzano and Bea Felise Garrido bested out 28 young swimmers in last month`s 7th National Age Group Swimming Championships at Los Banos, Laguna by the Philippine Amateur Swimming Association (PASA). The swimmers, both under the training hands of Coach Cecil Miquiabas, will represent the country in the prestigious sports event on June 2-4 in their respective swimming categories.
The city has long been producers of good swimmers in the country including swimmer-turned-singer Monique ``Nikki`` Bacolod who have also competed and won in the national and international level.

not one city in this country that is immaculately spared from this urban malady of service wires all over the air.

you can see it from appari up to jolo. even some of the nooks of the well planned Makati are not spared from these wires.

sigh. if only there is a law that obliges these service companies (power, phone, etc) to Bury their wires underground, and free our cities from such eyesores.

Lanao Norte execs join trade mission
By Richel V. Umel
Lanao Correspondent

ILIGAN CITY -- Two key officials from Lanao del Norte province joined President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo Monday for an investment mission in Saudi Arabia.

Lanao Second District Representative Abdullah D. Dimaporo said he and wife Lanao del Norte Governor Imelda Quibrnza-Dimaporo joined Arroyo in an investment meeting with King Abdullah Asiz of Saudi Arabia and Prince of Salman of Ryad.

An estimated P5 billion worth of investment opportunities for Mindanao are projected with major projects focusing particularly on the Iligan-Bukidnon Road, proposed Panguil Bay Bridge and Tubod-Gasnase road in Lanao del Norte.

The investment mission will be back on May 10. It will also target a more vital role for the country as the government seeks an observer status under the Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC).

Arroyo said obtaining observer status would enable the National Government to proceed through with its peace talks with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front.

The OIC had taken interest in the ongoing peace talks and are said to be supportive of the process.

White Water Rafting: Iligan Style
By Pat D. Noel
Roadtrip Iligan

The Cagayan de Oro White Water Rafting Inc. just recently visited Iligan City to explore the rapids of the majestic Maria Cristina Falls. This is in connection with their bid to host the 2007 World White Water Rafting Competition in Cagayan De Oro and possibly in Iligan City.

The group was headed by Mr. Chisum Facturan and Mr. Rupert Domingo both from Cagayan De Oro and was joined by Mr. Glenn Lewman, Jr., President of State of the Art Raft (SOTAR). Mr. Lewman is the manufacturer of the rafts used during the exploratory run and a major sponsor of the 2007 World White Water Rafting Competition.

If accepted, it will be the first time that Asia will be hosting the Olympics of White Water Rafting which is held every two years.

ICNHS, ICI STUDES BOOSTED SKILLS IN NATIONAL I.T. COMPETITION
By: cmo-mis
May 16, 2006

Iligan City may not only be a city of waterfalls, but also a home city to young IT-skilled students.

Ten young students of Iligan City National High School recently conquered DigitalFilipino.com`s Philippine Schools CyberFair 2006, defeating several participating schools around the country in two categories in Web Page Designing.

With a `waterfalls-inspired` webpage, the students bagged the top prize for Local Attractions and second-prize for Community Groups and Special Population category. Philippine Schools Cyberfair Ambassador Ms. Janette Toral yesterday personally awarded the young students along with representatives from the Department of Trade and Industry-Iligan and Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) who sponsored the students quest.

Last November, two students from Iligan Computer Institute also topped last year`s Philippine National Skills Competition. Jezreel C. Dologuin and Petti Flor R. Salaum both received gold medals for PC Networking and Computer Aided Drawing competition held in Makati City, Metro Manila.
School Administrator Ladislao Tabanao said the school still continues to give quality computer education to produce more winners in the field of Information Technology.

With a repertoire of over 40 full-length productions performed in extensive tours here and abroad, IPAG has significantly contributed to Philippine National Theater. It is recognized as a leading Philippine Theater company today.
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/IPAG1.jpg
IPAG artists come from various parts of the country. They
somehow converge because of the lure of the theater and the love for performance. The converging point is the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology where the IPAG is based and where these artists study. From apprenticeships upon their application to the Guild, they graduate to resident artists.

IPAG artists undergo rigid training in the craft of their choice before they are allowed to perform. Part of this training includes orientation studies in Philippine Theater and Dance. Privileges for accepted applicants include free tuition to the Institute, free books, and a modest monthly allowance. Performing artists have the privilege of touring with the Guild to various places around the country and abroad.

IPAG is resident theater company of the MSU-Iligan Institute of Technology.

Wow! Thanks Aligantong for the beautiful pictures. You’re truly a great source. The view of Iligan is matchless; they’re just breathtaking!!! (I got lost of my zone for a few seconds while I was watching the pictures!) And now I am wondering how stupid the local government of Iligan is for not capitalizing on these God given natural wonders to attract businesses and travelers. Grrrrr….

I just want to share this: The Delestes, who own this property and run this hospitality business, are close friends of ours. Kuya Jet -- the eldest sibling -- has migrated to the States. No idea who’s managing the resort now. Must be ate Charise – as the name implies. HeHe…

Any update on Gaisano Mall?

One reason might be is the bad perception of locals and foreigners that there's a war or kidnapping in Lanao (Iligan City is in Lanao de Norte, I will blame the irresponsible journalism for that). Two, tourisim in Iligan City is waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyy very slow. In fact, I noticed on national television networks on ads they don't promote my home city! :bash:

The City Government may not so stupid but what the heck are their priorities anyway.

^^ In fairness, the local govt. is doing its best to encourage investors and attract more tourists to come to this beautiful, prosperous and dynamic city. Just like me, I'm also wondering the slow pace of development considering the good business/investment climate of Iligan. Maybe it's not yet time for Iligan to regain its glorious past that fast. But I am hopeful that when the Laguindingan airport is opened, the Iligan-Bukidnon Road finished, the port of Iligan modernized, a shopping mall is built to spark retail competition, and most of all, when terrorism is ended, foreign and local investors would be encouraged to invest and give their full support and commitment to make Iligan one of the most promising cities in the country. Iligan, City of Magestic Waterfalls, will be flooded with tourists and tourism investments would come in. For now, the local Govt. as well as the Iliganons work hand in hand on what they can do to pave the way for a brighter future of the city. :)

AGUS 5 Hydroelectric Plant
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/Agus5.jpg
Agus V Hydroelectric Plant is one of the six hydroelectric generating plants harnessing raw water power potential along the Agus river.

It is a two-unit run-of-the-river type with a combined capacity of 55 megawatts and is situated between the tailwater of Agus IV HEP and the headwater of Agus VI HEP. It is located at Ditucalan, Iligan City some 13 kilometers from Iligan City proper and it is within the proximity of the famous Tinago Falls in the west and the Maria Cristina Falls in the North.

AGUS 6 Hydroelectric Plant
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/Agus6.jpg
Of the seven (7) hydro sites constructed along the Agus River, the Agus VI was first to be developed and completed because the site was the most feasible, the simpliest and the most economical to construct and the nearest to expected power consumers. Construction of the project was authorized by the then, Pres. Elpidio Quirino in 1950.

The Agus VI H.E. Plant, originally known as the Maria Christina Falls Hydroelectric Plant, named after the famous scenic waterfalls just 100 meters in the background. The falls cascades around 320 feet down a sheer clift, and is only 8.5 kilometers southwest of Iligan City.

AGUS 7 Hydroelectric Plant
http://i62.photobucket.com/albums/h117/Alingatong/Agus7.jpg
Downstream of the existing Agus VI Hydroelectric Plant is Agus VII Hydroelectric Plant, constructed near the mouth of Agus river located at Fuentes, Iligan City.

The plant is the most downstream of the series of hydroelectric plants built by the National Power Corporation in the Agus River from Marawi City to Iligan City.

On January 16,1979, the construction of this project was started. The civil works was awarded and constructed by CDCP, which includes the construction of the main powerhouse, dam structures, and diversion tunnel. Electro -mechanical erection works were performed by the National Power Corporation personnel under supervision of Italian and Japanese consultants. The main equipment were supplied by Gruppo Industrie Elettro (GIE), Italy and the various control equipment by Fuji Electric Co. Ltd., Japan. The construction cost of the plant was P624.22 million.

AUSTRALIAN GOVERNMENT ASSURES MORE FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO ILIGAN
By: CIO - MIS
May 30, 2006

Australian Ambassador to the Philippines His Excellency Tony Hely assured local leaders of Iligan that the city will continue to receive financial aid from the Australian government through its Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Fund.

This was disclosed by Hely during his visit in Iligan City on May 25.

In his message during a welcoming program at Macaraeg-Macapagal Ancestral House, Ambassador Hely said that the Australian government is impressed with the various AusAID-funded projects that are accomplished by the city. He also expressed his gratitude for putting their support into good use which gave an inspiring impact to Iliganons.

AusAid is currently supporting 16 government projects in different areas of Mindanao including Iligan City. The Financial Management Project of the city, which was also supported by AusAid, boosted the City Treasurer’s collection last year through the award-winning performance of the Tax Revenue Assessment and Collection System (TRACS). TRACS enhances a fast and systemized process in business and real property tax collection in Iligan. Four other accomplished projects of the Philippine Regional Municipal Development (PRMDP) were also presented to the Australian Ambassador by the former PRMDP-Iligan Project Manager Architect Gil Balondo of the City Planning and Development Office. In an interview, Balondo revealed to the members of local media that government projects such as engineering, planning and developing and human resource are also made operational with the help of AusAid.

NORTHEAST 2B DISTRICT TEACHERS ATTEND COMPUTER PROFICIENCY TRAINING

May 29, 2006, Monday

Around fifty (50) teachers and school administrators completed the second phase of the computer literacy program for public elementary school educators sponsored by the Iligan City government through the Information and Communications Technology Center (ICTC). SP Committee Chairman on Research, Science and Information Technology Voltaire I. Rovira declared it is a confirmation of the Cruz administration’s commitment to the local academe to help its teachers keep up with modern technology which will aid them in carrying out their duties.

Educators of the northeast 2B district were ecstatic to be the first batch of participants of the Computer Proficiency Training last May 25-26 which is a follow up to the Basic Computer Literacy Training for all local public elementary school teachers conducted earlier this year. Competent instructors assisted by the ICTC staff provided lectures and hands-on instructions (using the PC units previously furnished by the city government’s computerization project to the school district) to the educators at the Digkila-an Elementary School in Barangay Digkila-an, this city.

Northeast 2B district teachers became the first recipient of the follow up training owing to their enthusiasm to strengthen their computer skills in response to the city government’s drive on computerization involving the local public schools. (EAMayormita/ICTC)

I think once that Gaisano Mall in Iligan is built...it will not only cater to Iligan market but also to Marawi and nearby towns in Lanao del Norte.

There are many people in Iligan and Lanao del Norte employed in manufacturing companies .....the strategy therefore is to let their spending money circulate within Iligan and in a way invigorate the economy further, where the money rightfully belongs..... and not spend it somewhere else

History of La Salle Academy-Iligan

La Salle Academy, Iligan City belongs to the third generation of Lasallian schools in the Philippines. After De La Salle University (1911) and University of St. La Salle (1952), La Salle Academy (1958) belongs to that set of four schools that constitute a growth spirit of Lasallian education in the country. This includes La Salle-Greenhills(1959), St. Joseph's High School (1960) and De La Salle-Lipa (1962).

The presence of La Salle in northern Mindanao came to be with the invitation of Msgr. Patrick Cronin of the Prelature of Ozamiz to take over St. Columban's Academy in Iligan City. This was the same school that used to be Woodrow Wilson Junior College of the late forties and early fifties. When the first group of Brothers under Brother Crescentius Richard arrived in Iligan, the school was located in downtown Iligan, a stone's throw from the Cathedral. Its faculty then included such veteran educators like Miss Rosario Tsukimata (an affiliated Member of the Brothers), Kagawad Pedro Generalao (founding Principal of Iligan City High School), Mr. Felicito Rugay (founding Director-Principal of Andres Soriano Memorial School, Luropan, Cebu and Tranquilino Valderrama Memorial School, Bubunawan, Bukidnon; and the Andres Soriano Jr. Learning Center, Aroroy, Masbate); and Mr. Carmelito Silva. A growing student population and a need for bigger campus necessitated the purchase of a three-hectare lot in Pala-o belonging to the estate of Pedro Nunez.

The transfer to the new site in 1960 was accompanied by a change of name to La Salle Academy. Brother Honorius Alfred Shields the second Director and co-author of the Biology for the Philippine High Schools, supervised the transfer to the nipa and bamboo structures and then, the construction of the permanent buildings in 1961. It must be mentioned that all this time La Salle was an exclusive school for boys.

The next development in the school came in 1967 when La Salle opened its doors to Grade 5. It was arranged with the RVM Sisters that for lower grades boys and girls would study at St. Michael's College grade school. For grade 5, the girls remained while the boys moved to La Salle. Thus began the nucleus of the La Salle Academy grade school.

A growing school-age population plus the demands of expansion necessitated the admission of girls. Thus, after a survey, coeds were accepted into grade 5 and 6 as well as first year and second year in 1973. By this time the basic structure of the school gym had been constructed under Bro. Jose V. Si, FSC, the principal then.

The genesis of the La Salle Parents Foundation, Inc. (LASAPFI) came from this time. It was finally registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission by 1975 with the late Engr. Manuel Hamoy as its first President and Chairman of the Board.

The school celebrated its Silver Jubilee in 1983. Plans were started to open the kindergarten. The first batch was accepted in 1985 following a modified Individually Guided Education (IGE). The gym provided the open classrooms for the children. By 1986 the first batch of kindergarten graduated from Grade School. In 1987, the first phase of the Grade School Building was constructed and dedicated to St. Brother Miguel. At this time, the new canteen was also constructed. Then, followed the construction of the second phase of the Grade School Building. In 1989 the library was built to accommodate both the grade school and high school. By this time the school had breached the 1800 mark.

In 1990 the Administration Building was finished to accommodate the Science Laboratories, the school Chapel, the HS Faculty Room, the Accounting Office, the office of the Registrar, the Academic Coordinators and the President. In 1998 in celebration of the Centennial of Philippine Independence, the Centennial Amphitheater was constructed. By 2000 the Grade School Building (housing the Grade 6 classrooms, the GS Library and AVR and the Internet Lab) was finished. School year 2001-2002 saw the GS Ramp sponsored by the Parents Association (LASAPFI).

To accentuate and confirm the excellence of Lasallian education, the high school department received its first accreditation from the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) in 1989 and re-accreditation followed in 1993 and 1998. The impetus towards development and growth had been sown.

More and more, La Salle had to carve its niche in the education sector of society, finding and asserting its particular role and affirming its contribution to the development of the human resources of this industrial city.

However, among the Brothers there was a worldwide movement towards the return of the charism of its founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle. The reach-out programs of the school became institutionalized with the creation of the Community Development Office in 1993. Then, the Board of Trustees approved the opening of the Night High School to begin operating n June 1994.

Thru, the stewardship of Bro. Jaime Dalumpines, FSC as its President (1993-99), a property in Agad-agad was purchased for the school's Recollection program and the commitment to be earth-keepers by developing it into an Ecology Sanctuary. From this saw the adoption of the nearby Purok Langilanon by forming the Langilanon Farmers Cooperative (LAFAMCO).

School year 1999-2000 saw the beginning of the TVET Department (Technical & Vocational Education Training). For 2000, the Brothers of the Philippine District bought a property in Binuni, Bacolod, Lanao del Norte and asked the school's Community Development Office to help in the forming of a cooperative similar to that of LAFAMCO.

To continue the quest for excellence, the Grade School Department had its PAASCU formal survey in 2001; and PAASCU Re-survey in 2004.

French gov’t eyes role in Mindanao

By Lino Dela Cruz
Iligan Correspondent

The French government is seeking more involvement in the development of Mindanao, according to France Ambassador to the Philippines Gerard Chesnel.

Chesnel was in Iligan City Thursday with Yves Caldihon, French Commercial Counselor, and their respective spouses. French corporation La Farge is operating at least two cement plants — Iligan Cement Corporation and Mindanao Portland Cement Corp. — in Iligan.

La Farge has at least four other cement plants operating in Luzon, namely Fortune-Continental Cement Plant, Fortune-Batangas Cement Plant, FR Cement Corp., and Republic Cement.

Chesnel talked with local leaders led by Iligan Vice Mayor Henry Dy about the business potentials in the city.

He was given a briefing by local La Farge officers led by Iligan Cement Corporation President Renato Sunico.

Chesnel also cited the prevailing stable peace and order situation in Mindanao.

Adviser wants to be ‘hunter’

WOWIligan News
by Glenda

ILIGAN CITY — As the prospect of peace between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) looms, Secretary Jesus Dureza, presidential adviser on the peace process, will soon become unemployed or will just seek retirement from government service.

But this will not be the last of Dureza because he is toying with the idea of becoming a bounty hunter for the United States Rewards for Justice Program.

“I might become a bounty hunter when I retire,” he jokingly told a group of media practitioners from Cagayan de Oro City and here over lunch the other day during his visit when he accompanied French Ambassador Gerard Chesnel and French Commercial Counselor Yves Caldihon in their visit to several places in Mindanao, including Cagayan de Oro City, Iligan City, Marawi City and Bukidnon province.

Dureza is closely working with the government and MILF negotiating panels and is optimistic that positive results will come out of the coming rounds of peace talks that will lead to a signing of a peace agreement.

FRENCH AMBASSADOR'S VISIT SEEN TO INDICATE PEACE IN ILIGAN
By: CIO - MIS
City Information Office
June 8, 2006

Another foreign ambassador recently visited Iligan City to look for potential investment area that will both benefit the city and the government of France. An indication of the city's peaceful safety situation, Vice-Mayor Henry Dy said.

French Ambassador Gerard Chesnel visited the city's Iligan Cement Corporation (ICC), Lafarge along with Presidential Adviser on Peace Process Secretary Jesus Dureza. Chesnel was on his 4-day visit in Northern Mindanao that includes Marawi City. The guests were welcomed by Vice-Mayor Henry Dy.

Iligan City, despite the economic downturns it has encountered the previous years, is slowly recovering industrially, Secretary Dureza said in an interview with local media. This was also seconded by Dy who said the city is totally safe for foreigners who wished to put their business here.

Last week, Australian Ambassador Tony Hely also visited Iligan City to give financial support through international support organization, AusAid.

Amen to that. Iligan is unique. A few km from downtown area, naa ang Timoga Spring Pools ug ang mga beach. Naa sad ang Mt. Agad-agad for trekking. We have lots of waterfalls. Naay mountain resorts like Maze Park.Mga natural attractions. Mga industries ug nag-start na ang construction sa mall. Musonod na dayon ang uban. Maayo ang panahon kay dili maagian ug bagyo ug way baha. Naa ang source sa kuryente. Daghan mga on-going projects karon ang local government (patubig, agri, sme pautang, etc.) and we are expecting for more developments/projects in the near future. Mapuno man ug mga bag-ong infra ang Iligan like other cities, lahi ra gihapon ang Iligan tungod sa mga natural resources ug attractions niini. :)

Is the airport in Iligan fully reopened, I heard from the mayor that it will reopen in time for the reopening of NSC?

Iligan and environs has quiet a good number of places and sceneries worth visiting. Iligan is also peaceful. Reopening of the airport will surely improve its economy further and somehow eliminate its dependence on CDO for its transport needs.

Yes. Iligan-Baloi Airport located in Baloi, Lanao Del Norte is now open but no commercial flights are available yet.:bash: Few private planes touched down at the said airport including the small 6-seater plane used by boxing champ, Manny Pacquiao, during his visit in Iligan sometime in February this year. :)

CITY OFFICIALS HOPE TO FREE NATION FROM DIVISIVENESS, CRIMINALITY
June 15, 2006

Two high-ranking officials of Iligan City yesterday expressed hope for the Filipino people during the celebration of the 108th Independence Day. Speaking to thousands of government workers from different sectors, the city's top political figures encouraged everyone to work sincerely and forget politics.

Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Lluch-Cruz called on the people's cooperation and support to his administration's campaign against loose firearms, illegal gambling and drug addiction.

"Dili mamahimong magmalamboon ang Iligan kung dili usab maghiusa ang tanang katawhan sa Iligan" (Iligan will never achieve development if there is no unity among the people themselves), the mayor said in his speech at the City Public Plaza.

Meanwhile, First District of Lanao and Iligan City Congressman Alipio Cirilo "Tikbong" Badelles blamed disunity both in the senate and congress as the cause of delay in the approval of some major bills such as National Budget 2006, Bio-Fuel Bill and the IIT Bill. The Congressman now fears that this situation will result to delay in bringing out government services to the people.

Badelles however believes that there is still a big chance to resolve this if everyone, especially those in congress and the senate, works in unity and set aside politics.

"Just like our nation's heroes who fought hard to achieve the Filipino's freedom," he added.
