View Full Version : New York in movies and books.
Barrio September 5th, 2008, 12:39 PM Hi all !!! Im from Poland and im completely in love with NYC. I’ve never been there but it’s definitely my biggest hobby in life. I sit almost everyday on google earth and watch it street by street. I downloaded houndreds of pictures and read houndreds of articles about this city.
And here is my question to you: Do you know some cool movies from 70s and 80s that are set in NYC with frequent views of the city ? I mean something like “Shaft” or “Fort Apache the Bronx”.
The same about books. Do you know some interesting books set in NYC with many descriptions of the city (no matter when written) ? I don’t mean some guides for tourist but novels. I read “The New York Trilogy” by Paul Auster and “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close” by Jonathan Safran Foer (this second one is fantastic) and now im looking for something else.
I would be very grateful for some nice titles ! PS sorry for mistakes my english isn’t perfect :)
fish September 5th, 2008, 08:48 PM Look for a DVD called, "The Newsies" - a true NY story. :okay:

Barrio September 5th, 2008, 10:34 PM thx fish. bobbycuzin i know wikipedia and i know this list. I even started to download every movie from the list starting with 70s but it doesnt make sense. Most of them suck and show only a little bit of the city. I would have to download 100 movies to have maybe 10 that i would like to have. I would be rather grateful for concrete proven title :) greetings for all new yorkers !!

19Dako20 September 6th, 2008, 02:38 PM watch this - my sassy girl ;)
marct. September 6th, 2008, 10:52 PM Watch the Martin Scorsese movie After Hours if you want to see some 1980s SoHo, that really shows off the place, for 1970's Manhattan and Brooklyn watch the French Connection by William Friedkin, for every borough in the 1970s but Staten Island watch Serpico by Sidney Lumet, the movie 25th Hour by Spike Lee shows off some more recent Manhattan. The best part is, all these movies were largely praised by critics, appreciated by viewers and all shot on location and manage to really show off the city.
fish September 6th, 2008, 11:58 PM There was an old movie, "The Taking of Pelham 123" - a classic!

VelesHomais September 7th, 2008, 08:49 AM If you're interested in early New York history, then try a satirical history of the city during the Dutch period. By Washington Irving "A History of New York from the beginning of the world to the end of the Dutch Dynasty". It was written in 1809 if my memory serves me right.

yamota September 7th, 2008, 08:19 PM if your'e into sci fi check out "Escape from New York", it's set in the future and Manhattan is one big prison camp, then one day Air Force One crashes in Manhattan and it's up to former Special Forces soldier Snake Plissken to rescue him. In one scene he lands his glider on the roof of the World Trade Center then proceeds to take the elevator down to street level. It's a great movie, I really recommend it.
yamota October 28th, 2008, 03:37 PM there's a new TV show on ABC I think, it's about a New York city cop who gets transported back in time to the year 1973 when New York was a crime hellhole
