shranethomas October 23rd, 2011, 03:10 PM Many many thanks mate.
Do you think they will give them a new classification? CMC etc
I think the RS will simply call it Kiha, because everytime we visit the yard they seemed to call the coaches Kiha. Mr. Motoyoshi is the PNR translator for the coaches so I think they just pick up what Motoyoshi will tell them.

Northrail finished in 5 years
Posted by Online on Oct 23rd, 2011
Manila, Philippines – The proposed multi-billion-peso Manila-Clark Northrail project will be finished in 60 months or five years, well past the current six-year tenure of President Benigno S. Aquino III which began in mid-2010 and ends in June 2016.
Leonardo Tolentino, head of the Manila Northrail project, has told senators that the project, now revised by the Aquino administration, requires 27 months of planning and another 33 months for construction or a total of 60 months or five years.
Resumption of the suspended rail project would lead to the transfer of the Manila International airport complex to the Clark economic zone in northern Pampanga.
“The key to that transfer is high-speed train,’’ Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) Secretary Manuel A. Roxas II said.
“It will be a fast train between Clark and Caloocan city. It will be electrified. Before (the entry of the Aquino administration replacing the nine-year Arroyo administration), we were doing the commuter train. Now, it will be a fast direct connection between Metro Manila and Clark,’’ Roxas said. (Mario B Casayuran)

Thanks mate, that may well be it.
Of course they will need numbers to diferentiate between the different cars.
Kiha201-203 etc. It will be great to finally have an official PNR classification in which to follow them.
May not see them this trip, but hoipe to travel on them in 2012.

I hope more tangible developments happen re PNR improvements. Who cares about PR releases?

I know I care about them.
Usually signifies one of those developments has happened.
Sadly, it also means that a journalist will get it, glorify it all, be gone with the facts and then publish it. :(

Two years and three months! Tinitiyak sigurong walang air leaks ang bawat caboose/ car! :jk::jk::jk:hehehe!

Just look at Dinky Soliman at yung Code NGO issue ngayon. I knew one day it will come back to haunt her. Anyway magiging usapang politika na naman. :D

Panay Railways gets offers for rehab
Monday, October 17, 2011 | Sun Star Iloilo
THE Panay Railways Inc. (PRI) received at least four offers from big business conglomerations based in Metro Manila for the rehabilitation and revival of the railway system from Iloilo to Capiz and eventually up to Caticlan in Malay, Aklan.
...
The offers came from industrialist Manuel V. Pangilinan, San Miguel Corporation, Joey Antonio of Century Properties, and a group of Korean investors.
The rehabilitation of the railways is eyed to cost P16 billion to be realized through a public-private partnership (PPP) or build-operate-transfer (BOT) scheme. The rehabilitation will start January 2012.

2nd, MVP is an Atenean with a BA in Econ, while RSA is from FEU with BS in Mechanical Engineering.

Who is ER?
There does seem to be a lot of local political interest in the reopening of this line and all indications are that it would be as successful as a passenger service could be.
Just needs someone with balls in power to look past the IS to the countries greater good.
Tourist traffic alone would help the line along, let alone the amount of commuter traffic.
I wonder if there is any freight potential - the real clentcher in these debates?

This track seems quite fine in condition (although I am not an engineer who has inspected) and I have seen high speeds on far, far worse.
Could it be due to the condition of the bridge you mentioned?

Hi chaps and chapettes,
Three of us for the PRHS Modelling group are planning a gathering on the evening of November 6th at Ermita. It would start around 7pm, following the PRHS Manila Railfan Day.
We are inviting some others to come along and bring a model, or their modelling ideas with them - but attendee numbers are limited.
If your interested in modelling Philippine railways, feel free to join us.
Email me for further details:
PRHS. Society @ gmail.com (remove spaces)
Updates can be found at our group HERE. (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Philippine_Modelling/)
NOTE: There will be some giveaways of historic old railway modelling magazines on the night. Rare editions from the 60s-80s.

ER is the Governor of Laguna province. He is the nephew of former President Joseph "Erap" Ejercito Estrada.
Everyone wants all the Line to be revived but the biggest hindrance is the insane amount of squatters. The problem is more than just economic, its also political.
I wonder why?
This track seems quite fine in condition (although I am not an engineer who has inspected) and I have seen high speeds on far, far worse.

Learned that PNR has a memo to observe precaution in all rail bridges. But the bridge just in front of this is so short, maybe less than 20 meters  Though there is another rail bridge about 1.5 kilometers from that position.
I was thinking pa naman that the BEx loco-loco can finally flex her muscles in this stretch as the Line is relatively clear up to Palikpik-Ayungin bridge.
On a side note, T-612 has been delayed for almost 2 weeks straight now. Her times are really erratic, most probably due to the salubungan in Plaridel.
Has PNR finally published a timetable for commuters?

Humina kasi ang tourist arrivals sa Pagsanjan ever since P.Noy assumed office last year.

Heres hoping they are successful in the eventual reopening of the line. Where there is a will, there is a way. I hope :)
I suppose the speed restriction on the bridges are warranted. They were unusuad for years and probably all need a proper evaluation before speeds are lifted.

Actually when I was fortunate enough to be a guest at the 2nd Trial Run and a paying passenger during the Inaugural Run, my biggest concern and worry was will the bridges hold (especially Palikpik and Tulay Buwaya) :D
Some of the bridges have rusted and busted trusses already, though GM Ragragio has said in a statement PNR engineers have inspected all rail bridges and had deemed it safe to pass through.

Bahay_Kubo October 25th, 2011, 09:13 PM good morning Pinoy railfans! :)
with the long Halloween-All Saints' Day weekend coming up, expect the number of passengers riding the PNR trains to Bicol to go up. time to earn more for the PNR! :)
hopefully, no problem will be encountered during the holidays. at the same time, it's high time to revive the train service connecting Manila with Calamba using some of the donated coaches from Japan (i.e., please replace those old, overused COMMEX coaches that are currently in service).
P.S.: got this from PEX, posted by a certain abarcial. i wonder what you guys would say about it.
I took a DMU train from buendia to tutuban this afternoon and I saw the kiha52 the orange and red color had a minor repainting job done and the roof was painted silver, with old PNR logo on the front and the side. They are also installing wire mesh already on the first three windows. From a vantage point it would seem new, I hope that they will maintain those train coaches for quite a long time. If not for the bad manners of the Filipinos, throwing rocks and sometimes small bearings on the passing trains, while inside some passengers have a don't care attitude, mostly I think those were construction workers or something, spitting phlegm (yellowish or greenish!!! YucK!!!) on the train floor, can you imagine if these were transferred by a fly to unaware children... they might get sick because of those dirty practices.
Mojacko October 25th, 2011, 11:22 PM So PNR's second-hand Kiha 52 unit is on its test run - can't wait to check it out in person (although pics and vids of it are good enough till then).
Ganda ng busina ni Kiha52.
Absinthe888, by now I know you envy the musical proficiency I happen to possess, but: what note and range is the Kiha 52's horn in? (If you can't identify it by that method, at least what other train in PNR's fleet does it sound similar to?)

Recto: LRT, MRT rehab could spur local train manufacturing industry
| More | Wednesday, October 26, 2011
MANILA -- The P6.3 billion that Malacañang has approved for release for the rehabilitation of the Metro Rail Transit and Light Rail Transit should go to Filipinos, and not foreign workers, Senator Ralph Recto said Wednesday.
Recto said the government should take a cue from the ship-building industries of Cebu and Subic, and even local jeepney manufacturers who “sleek and shiny metallic icons on wheels,” and jump-start a Philippine train-making industry.
“Importing the coaches and spare parts from abroad would mean subsidizing a foreign worker. We could eventually buy or make them locally,” he said.
He said creating a train manufacturing industry will create a new skilled labor force and "will have a multiplier effect."
Recto, who has repeatedly called for more new coaches for Manila's trains, lauded the release of money, saying the government will get its investment back quickly with more passengers and advertising opportunities.
“The increased patronage and income may ultimately offset the need to increase fares,” he said.
Around P4.5 billion of the money will go into buying 26 new coaches for the MRT line, which runs along Epifanio Delos Santos Avenue from North Avenue in Quezon City to Taft Avenue in Pasay City

-- Philippine National Railways General Manager Junio Ragragio poses with a sleeper train in Tutuban Station in Manila on March 11. The train used to operate in Japan under the name Hokuriku. (Motoki Yotsukura)
Japanese transports get second lives in Philippines
October 12, 2011
By MOTOKI YOTSUKURA / Correspondent
The Asahi Shimbun (http://ajw.asahi.com/article/asia/south_east_asia/AJ2011101213086)
MANILA--Japanese visiting the Philippines may think they are still in their home country if they board or see a certain train, airplane or ship that rekindles nostalgic memories.
These older vehicles were once familiar sights across Japan, and now in retirement, have been pressed back into service in the Philippines.
One is the super-express sleeper train that ran between Ueno in Tokyo, and Kanazawa, the snowy capital of Ishikawa Prefecture, for about 40 years until last year under the name Hokuriku (northern land).
In September last year, 10 dark-blue passenger carriages of the train were offered to the Philippine National Railways (PNR) by East Japan Railway Co. (JR East) free of charge. It would mark the first time since the 1990s that the PNR has operated a sleeper train.
Today, the former Hokuriku train is operating on a 377-kilometer route between Tutuban Station in Manila and Naga Station in the Bicol region in the southern part of Luzon island. The railway operation had been mostly suspended since 2004 due to a series of typhoons. However, it resumed in late June this year, and the sleeper train has since been running on the railway.
When the railway operations were suspended, buses carried the passengers. However, there was a strong demand for resumption of the railway.
PNR General Manager Junio Ragragio said that the friendly people of Bicol prefer trains to buses because they can walk around on them and can chat with other passengers.
The PNR currently possess 34 train cars. Of these, 28 were once used in Japan.
In Japan, the Hokuriku ran at an average speed of 70 kilometers per hour. In the Philippines, however, it is running slower. Even after the expected completion of railroad reinforcement work, it plans to travel at a speed of 60 kph.

Malabo!

Well, continue pa rin ang DMT train from Guinobatan to somewhere in Cam Sur. That's daily trip with formation Del919+4 box car+2 flat car+maintenance...

WOW!! That's pretty fast - for a non-aerodynamic railcar design! (I doubt even the newer Hyundai Rotem Grey Sharks can go that fast. Or can they - potentially?)
Speaking of which - Kiha 52's horn is in Tenor E, again like those on the Grey Sharks. :)

I think the ROTEM ones would be similarly capable.
Being part of their speed trials when new, I can tell you that they can get up and go very well when needed.
alcogoodwin October 27th, 2011, 02:01 AM New PNR Photographic Fees
A railfan reported on Facebook yesterday that he was told, at Tutuban, that he would need to pay to new photographers fee to go about his hobby.
The fee is apparently a minimum of P1000. Presumably it would be more for a commercial concern, like the recent ABS-CBN filming, and is payable hourly.
Thus to photograph trains for 4 hours, you would be looking at P4000 (A$100).
Has anyone else been subject to this new costing?
How do local railfans afford to pay for it?

Just a couple of questions for the rollingstock experts :)
The numbers I was kindly given earlier for these vehicles are:
52-122 137 121 125
Which one is the blue one above?
What is the numbers for the fancy angle cabbed brown looking set that also arrived with these?
How many actually arrived with that delivery?
Maraming salamat.

Thankfully that is a bit harder to police.
I suspect it is limited to just main locations like Tutuban/Tayuman and Caloocan where access can be restricted.
However these restrictions seem to somewhat fluid in their application.
I've had some words with the guy and honestly, he is just a young guy with a love of his nations railways. He has been really disheartened by the treatment.
I'm telling him to go to one of the local stations. Really, in coming months there will not be much more in the yards that you wont see out lineside anyway, save for a few old freight wagons.
Hopefully we have not lost the support of two young people with a genuine interest.
915bungohunter October 27th, 2011, 09:27 AM @Shaider, Di kita nakilala kanina nung dumaan kami bandang IRRI.

Yeah Happs, I think it would be solely related to Tutuban/Tayuman and likely Caloocan.
I am pretty sure you could still stand lineside at Pasay Road and not expect someone with an invoice book to run out from behind some bushes :)
The question is. With all the yard photos that still regularly appear - how do the photographers afford to do it still? I couldn't justify it myself.

Having restrictions inside Kalookan and Tutuban is okay since unauthorized personnel should not be there in the first place. I always ask guards/personnel if its okat to take photos first since I'm in their "territory".
But to charge P1,000/hr? Sobra naman yun.

Sir Brad, is that railfan a foreign national? if yes, i am thinking that someone with an "enterprising" mind told him that because he wanted to cash in on him. unless we verify stuff from the PNR itself, i will not believe that railfans have to shoulder a certain amount just to take pictures.

well, correct me if i'm wrong but it seems to me that the tracks in the provinces are in much better condition compared to those here in Metro Manila. still, Kiha 52 moving at 80 km/h maximum here in Metro Manila is quite fast by Metro Manila standards.

Bahay_Kubo October 27th, 2011, 06:33 PM i dunno with the rest of you but i still believe that if the PNR is keen towards using the Blue Whale locos for a much longer period of time, they should be subjected to massive upgrading by GE. i guess no entity can give the Blue Whales the best care possible than GE.

Bahay_Kubo October 27th, 2011, 06:41 PM ^^ well, we all know how stupid members of the current regime are. they do not give a damn about modernizing the rail transport system of this country but they have lots of money to give away to squatters and to Muslim separatists in Mindanao. :naughty:  :ohno:

well, it depends on the budget that the PNR for such a program and whether or not GE has a program for entities that are on very strict budget such as the PNR. i believe that GE will be able to come up with the most cost-effective solution towards modernizing PNR's locomotive fleet.
absinthe_888 October 27th, 2011, 06:52 PM ^^ Don't forget to reballast and retamper the Line all the way to Legazpi and rehab the bridges as well. Travel times can be much much faster.
Bahay_Kubo October 27th, 2011, 06:57 PM ^^ ah! yes! fixing the entire line all the way to Bicol and possibly reviving the lines towards Batangas and Santa Cruz. lots of work to do in the PNR that have to be done ASAP.
pi_malejana October 27th, 2011, 09:24 PM i'm actually worried on these speed stunts... i hope they're not speeding for the sake of being fast... kaluluma na ng mga tren at mga tulay, tapos mga riles di rin naman ganun kaayos...
alcogoodwin October 27th, 2011, 11:01 PM well, it depends on the budget that the PNR for such a program and whether or not GE has a program for entities that are on very strict budget such as the PNR. i believe that GE will be able to come up with the most cost-effective solution towards modernizing PNR's locomotive fleet.
Most cost effective was to maintain them in the first place.
Goodness, the 5000 and 900 classes are young by many countries, including ours, standards and are hardly pushed to work hard with a few passenger cars behind.
These locos could easily have been operating, as they are, in 2030.
By way of an example.
GM10 was born in 1952. If the planet does survive 2012 she will be celebrating her 60th birthday and still in regular daily usage on heavier trains than the 900 or 5000s are expected to haul.

alcogoodwin October 27th, 2011, 11:09 PM Sir Brad, is that railfan a foreign national? if yes, i am thinking that someone with an "enterprising" mind told him that because he wanted to cash in on him. unless we verify stuff from the PNR itself, i will not believe that railfans have to shoulder a certain amount just to take pictures.
No, he and his cousin live in Las Pinas, he is certainly a local.
He was told that photographing is not prohibited, but then sent to the transportation department and told there is now a fee, the P1000 being a minimum.
Maybe it is more expensive for a foreign national?
If your right about an "enterprising mind", then that is a worrying thought, on so many levels.

This is very impressive.
How was the ride? Did the DMU rock much?
alcogoodwin October 27th, 2011, 11:19 PM i see.
how about on tracks within Metro Manila? was it able to go as fast as 90 to 100 km/h?
You also need to keep in mind the amount of people and level crossings along the track in Manila. It is a lot more intense than out in some of these rural areas.
While we were doing speed trials with the ROTEM sets around Bicutan we were getting up to the area of 80. I have no doubt that this could have been exceeded nicely on good track (there was a kink in the test area sadly) as they were running as smooth as a babies bottom along there.
happosai October 28th, 2011, 12:45 AM Some people even spit inside the trains itslef, just l;ike what BK mentioned a couple of posts back. N@mputa.
Having restrictions inside Kalookan and Tutuban is okay since unauthorized personnel should not be there in the first place. I always ask guards/personnel if its okat to take photos first since I'm in their "territory".
But to charge P1,000/hr? Sobra naman yun.
^^ I can cover the whole of Tayuman yard in less than 30mins and without the guards noticing me..
^^ Same with bus lang naman yan. Tignan mo yung mga yellow tanks (Marikina Autoline) along Ayala. Humahataw kahit traffic. Kaya doon ako lagi sumasakay. :ahihihi: este

Is it a special cloaking device, like in Star Trek?:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:
Seriously though, I can't walk one metre outside any building in the Philippines without everyone looking. Like a niece said to me, how can you hide in the crowd when you are 30cm taller :)
I've just ask PNR to clarify the situation on their Facebook site.
Have emailed Mr Nierva about the railfan day and how the situation stands with this.

alcogoodwin October 28th, 2011, 08:59 AM If I may ask, how is this powered? I though these were electric trains and I can't seem to see any power cars.
The electric ones are the silver things seen in a couple of photos.
These will have to be all locomotive hauled, unless someone decides to invest massively in a conversion.
Sadly the elctric cars have not had the same amount of coverage as their DMU counterparts.
Has anyone got the numbers for the electrics yet?
kenjikun07 October 28th, 2011, 08:59 AM Train, bus rates not increasing for Undas weekend, reps say
Train and bus rates are poised to stay the same from this week until the long weekend, representatives from the Philippine National Railways (PNR) and two major bus franchises said Wednesday.
The PNR’s Bicol Express line, meanwhile, will be deploying a special fleet of trains for the undas weekend, according to their official Facebook fan page.

Bahay_Kubo October 28th, 2011, 11:19 AM good afternoon Pinoy railfans!
today marks the start of the true test of the renewed PNR service to the provinces. hopefully and God-willing, the PNR will successfully pass the test, ensuring that everyone going to and from Bicol for the Halloween-All Saints' Day long weekend be transported safely and efficiently.
so far, the media is reporting that tickets for the Bicol Express are already sold out. good news for the PNR, which, hopefully, will inspire them to further improve the train services.
Bahay_Kubo October 28th, 2011, 11:31 AM Most cost effective was to maintain them in the first place.

have them upgraded and maintained properly and the Blue Whales will continue to serve the public in the years to come. hoping and praying to see them upgraded by GE and being well-maintained by the PNR.

s40 October 28th, 2011, 01:31 PM ^^ anyone close to the GM or anyone who can talk to PNR management.... I'm sure they are smart people but I truly hope someone told them this is a critical quality test to pass................. if not hundreds, thousands of passengers will use the PNR this holiday period......... In marketing, this is a chance of a lifetime.... moment of truth for consumers to be happy with the train service.......
915bungohunter October 28th, 2011, 01:32 PM Tama...

this is the best time for the PNR to prove its worth. today is the start of the true test of the revived train services connecting Manila to Bicol.
absinthe_888 October 28th, 2011, 01:52 PM ^^ Per info from PNR, T-611 ang PS-01 tonight is FULLY BOOKED.
T-611: 3 FS + 1 REC
PS-01: 3 FS
Seating capacity:
FS = 38 pax
REC = 68 pax
Bahay_Kubo October 28th, 2011, 01:58 PM ^^ whoa! both trips to Bicol tonight are fully booked?
now that's what you call a positive reaction from the riding public in a sense that they are now welcoming the idea of going to and from Bicol via the PNR. the PNR better live up to expectations. ;)
Bahay_Kubo October 28th, 2011, 02:30 PM ^^ the objective should actually be the PNR being the main option of passengers who are taking the trip to and from Bicol. if the PNR will be able to successfully pass the test during the long Halloween-All Saints' Day weekend, i am pretty sure that the more commuters will look more on the idea of going south via PNR trains over taking trips on buses and airplanes.
absinthe_888 October 28th, 2011, 02:31 PM So far so good for T-611, on time ang byahe nya. Based from her horn, DEL 917.
Bahay_Kubo October 28th, 2011, 02:36 PM ^^ that's good news, Sir absinthe! :)
sana tuloy-tuloy na ang magandang performance ng PNR this long weekend. kung maganda ang feedback coming from passengers who chose to ride PNR trains, mas dadami ang mga pasahero na sasakay, mas gaganda pa ang image ng PNR. :)
re: Kiha 52, sana mas marami pa tayong makuha na ganun from Japan to serve routes within Metro Manila, within Bicol, and those connecting Manila and Bicol.

Just personally curious, but: would anyone know if Ryan Basilio (one of a few PNR drivers I've befriended and the one who invited me in-cab on Locomotives 902 and 919) knows how to drive a Kiha 52 - and if he was the one who test drove this one? (Or could it have been any of the other drivers I personally know - Christian Pacis? Lito Gavino? Or Jun "Balbas" Manuel?)
^^ Per info from PNR, T-611 ang PS-01 tonight is FULLY BOOKED.
T-611: 3 FS + 1 REC

WOW!!! With a fully-booked Bicol Express trip like this one, PNR sure is experiencing one heck of a rebound - back to the way it was before Milenyo. Hopefully nothing goes wrong this time - and that they keep it up!
YIPPEE-KI-YAY! Keep ridin' the rails, y'all....
Bahay_Kubo October 28th, 2011, 02:46 PM ^^ hey Sir Mojacko! :)
it's really nice to read and hear such great developments regarding the revived PNR services to Bicol. if things will turn out really well during the long weekend, expect the number of passengers taking PNR trains to and from Bicol to increase. :)
1100 October 28th, 2011, 03:42 PM Naka-alis na siguro ang PS-01 ngayon. Sino kaya ang loco?
absinthe_888 October 28th, 2011, 03:54 PM ^^ Kadaan lang sa Sta. Mesa a couple of minutes ago sabi ni Ayhankun.
Kaso meh pupuntahan pa kasi akong Halloween party.
absinthe_888 October 28th, 2011, 08:04 PM ^^ PS-01 was hauled by DEL 922 and arrived in LA 30 minutes ahead of schedule.
