Railways SIG' contributed by Chris Hart, a fellow Aussie, some years ago.
Taken on the 20th of January 1984 at an unknown location on the Panay system, it shows some fascinating rollingstock that has sadly missed preservation.

pi_malejana January 8th, 2012, 09:35 AM that's amazing!:okay: can't wait to see it finished...
how i wish the real PNR is as clean and as properly-tampered as your model...
medyo OT... have you tried airplane/airport modelling?? which one do you think is more expensive??
Sou-jiro January 8th, 2012, 09:39 AM ^^ Thanks.....
based on the two hobbies....definitely railway modelling is not cheap...but Making Airport/Airplane scenery Diorama is much cheaper.
I was originally making Airport models for PAL (I've destroyed like 12 dioramas (I only keep them for around 3 months then I get rid of them).... but this is only my second attempt at model railway diorama...this time though I wanna make a Philippine scenery. :)
Actually I'm an aviation enthusiast (as per my link below) But recently I've taken a liking to railways all of a sudden.
Keep that the hobby flowing men...

Going back to the Commex Ordinary Train:

youngster0814 January 9th, 2012, 02:35 PM Im planning to ride the BEx this summer, Pagdating sa Naga, sakay ulit ng BEx the same day, pwede po ba ito?
PASAWAY!
MORE POWER PNR!
BTW on time ang BEX kanina ah, 4:30am nasa AA-SUC segment na cya.

Mojacko January 11th, 2012, 02:28 AM Good morning, fellow PNR railfans and friends at SkyscraperCity Philippines! We (me with my parents) have just arrived this morning on board Philippine Airlines flight PR105 from San Francisco - after a wonderful Christmas vacation with my girlfriend and her family.
Although still sleepy from jet lag and only now re-establishing internet connection in the comfort of the home I've missed for the past month, mere words can hardly express how much I've missed you guys - and even more the experience of riding PNR's rails - particularly checking out the new trains and carriages and stuff.
Hopefully, once I reorganize my schedule over the coming week or two that I get back to work, I may try to set aside some free time I'm permitted to ride the rails again and check out what's happening over at PNR - and with you guys (hope you've all been good boys while I was away!).
So see you guys soon - and stay safe ridin' the rails, y'all! Oh - and Happy New Year indeed!

Fraulein January 11th, 2012, 06:26 AM PNR reviving Manila-Albay service
http://www.mb.com.ph/node/347580/pnr-reviving-manilaalbay-
MANILA, Philippines — Tourists and travelers to the Bicol region have more to rejoice with the recent revival of the Manila-Albay connection of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) to the town of Polangui.
The explorer run of the state railway agency ran from the Tutuban terminal in Manila led by Albay Gov. Joey Salceda, PNR General Manager Junio Ragrario and Polangui Vice Mayor Jesus Salceda Jr.
According to Gov. Salceda, the return of the train service augurs well for Albay’s growing economy and tourism industry.
He said that the revived train service will offer an alternative, safe and cheaper mode of transport, especially with the rising toll rates at the South Luzon Expressway.
Salceda, who helped bring back the Albay section of the railway system, also noted that the train will also support the province’s disaster response thrust as it bypasses the flood-prone areas in the region.
The train was welcomed by townsfolk at the Polangui station led by Mayor Cherilie Mella-Sampal, who were elated with the return of the “iron horse.”
Meanwhile, Ragrario said that regular train trips to Albay will start soon after the repair of a bridge in Guinobatan. He added that the full line to Legazpi City is expected to be restored by the first quarter of 2012, which will be in time for the Magayon Festival, Albay’s month-long tourism event.
He noted that the refurbished trains from Japan can accommodate passengers with first class, sleeper and economy coaches. He added that there are also coaches for dining and cargo.
The train will be christened Mayon Limited, named after the old train service which plied the route before it was halted due to the damage brought by typhoon Reming in 2006.
The Manila-Naga City service called “Bicol Express” was restored last September in time for the Feast of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
Once fully-restored, the PNR line will pass through the scenic spots of Camarines Sur and Albay, including the iconic Mayon Volcano, Bicol’s geological monument and major tourist drawer.

The Manila-Naga City service called “Bicol Express” was restored last September in time for the Feast of the Our Lady of Peñafrancia.
Once fully-restored, the PNR line will pass through the scenic spots of Camarines Sur and Albay, including the iconic Mayon Volcano, Bicol’s geological monument and major tourist drawer.

based on the two hobbies....definitely railway modelling is not cheap...but Making Airport/Airplane scenery Diorama is much cheaper.
Actually I'm an aviation enthusiast (as per my link below) But recently I've taken a liking to railways all of a sudden.
Hiya mate,
If you are buying all propietry stuff from model railways shops it can be very expensive yes. I personally could not afford it if I did this.
Best to become involved with a group, smaller is preferable, and share different ideas.
The PNR BC boxcars below, as well as one PNR FL, have thus far cost me around $7. I got the underframes and bogies for free and just purchased the styrene.
I have since found that I may be able to get the same styrene for a fraction of the cost at an exhibition later in the year, via another model railway group that one of our PRHS/SMUT Modelling Group members is involved in.
I've also been working on two PNR tankers, converting from models I got for $5 each. Instead of using highly priced paint from hobby shops, I have taken the tip to use spray cans from Bunnings. These work fine and are a fraction of the cost.
Through our small Sydney modelling group, I have also recently been given a very low cost alternative for precision cutting of a PNR passenger CMC/CTC kit from styrene.
Always look for alternatives other than just hobby stores, especially expensive ones like Hobbyco.

Good Idea...will that give me more options though?..as Im on Z gauge...most other people are on HO or OO and a few on N. Very hard to find Z stuff in Australia. I only found two place and even then Z is limited but that all the space I have.
I dont get Marklin anymore as its too pricey. I get Japanese made one like Teshodo or PRM or Rokuhan. New comers since not many makers on the Z market. I wont get marklin anymore it too pricey and they only do Euro locomotives...im after GE locos which is easier to get in the US (Mirco Trains do Z and N) all four locos I have a Japanese EF64-1000 series. ad one Marklin Steam. If I only had the space I'd love to have HO or even N.

Modelling is the same no matter what scale, it is just done in different sizes.
Of course a sheet of styrene will make one or two carriages in HO, or probably 10+ in Z, but still its best to get it cheaper or free.
Trees, buildings etc etc are all made in similar ways and throwing idas around helps no matter what the scale.
Z would certainly be one of the dearer scales in proprietry stuff as there is so little call for it.
Space becomes a massive problem for me in coming months as I move house. So my planned massive layot is now just a small terminal one in HO.
The same could probably be done in 1.2 metre x 20cm in N scale. But alas, my SMR and PNR modelling has already begun in HO.
There are only about 4 regular people in our model group, but amongst us we have variously done N, HO, 12mm, HOn3, 5 1/4 inch and 10 inch over the years.
It can be done cheaper and stuff be got easier.
I call it kuriput modelling  At least on my PNR layout.
BTW- I reckon a Z scale squatter village would look awesome.
Sou-jiro January 13th, 2012, 11:57 AM I'll look into making freight cars from Evergreen plastics as well to save.
I can make Z squatter Village but that would mean I have to put a dozen bulldozer in the scenery with coppers and staff from MMDA. :D

Actually theres a very good idea.
If doing a squatter scene, then why not have a portion of them demolished and being removed. Makes for a very relevant scene, while being cheaper than modelling all the actual shanties.
While your at it, make sure you model locals throwing rocks at the trains and a policeman turning a blind eye to it.
A dozen bulldozers may be a bit expensive though :-)

Not that I have ever noticed.
May be a problem with the braking system, or something else underneath.
Contact PNR and let them know. It may get more expensive to fix later.

This is not limited to Pinoys in the country, in fact I have had a couple of circumstances where, as a foreigner, I was discriminated against for photographing when I noted locals photographing in the same place.
The problem is that most Filipinos respect the guards word without question.
My wife is like that, she gets upset if I stand up to them.
I always stand up to them, and everyone there should do the same. They only have this delusion of grandure because people don't stand up for their personal rights.
As I have said on a Facebook site.
Why dosen't someone go to the effort to get the photographic rules of the nation and post it up? Then everyone could carry a copy when photographing trains and show security guards when confronted?
Sure it will take an hour or two effort to obtain the rules - but if we are seriously concerned about about our photographic right - well then.

absinthe_888 January 17th, 2012, 01:07 PM Bicol Express rates remain discounted (http://www.mb.com.ph/articles/348293/bicol-express-rates-remain-discounted)

Manila Bulletin Online

MANILA, Philippines — Travelers can still enjoy discounted fare rates when opting to ride the Bicol Express line of the Philippine National Railways (PNR) in going to provinces in Southern Luzon.
This as the PNR board has not yet decided on lifting the promotional Bicol Express fare rates that has been charged to passengers since last June. Current fare rates are discounted by 30 percent on a promotional offering.
PNR General Manager Jun Ragrario said reverting to the original fare rates is “still under discussion” at the PNR Board and that “in the meantime, promotional rates will continue.”
At present, patrons of reclining tourist seats are being charged P300 instead of P605 while patrons of sleeper coaches will be charged P500 per berth instead of P950.
Presently, almost 50% discount pala BEx fares.
Please don't sanction me :D

I've noticed over the past 2 (now turning 3) years I've developed an observational interest in PNR, one symbol that gives PNR's GE U15C Blue Whales their distinct character has been passed around from one locomotive to another.
I'm referring to my ever-favorited horn that blasts out its award-winning C7 chord (baritone C, tenor E, alto B flat) - which may have been the sound the U15Cs' horns originally blasted out when they were brand new. While it's sad to discover such a valuable part in a locomotive being replaced too often (in some cases, after deliberately being allowed to deteriorate into the comedy-prop-like overblow-detached-note sounds) over maintenance jobs performed on them, at least one horn apparatus that gives that sound gets passed around often enough to be heard and admired by rail fans like myself just one more time.
Here I note who of PNR's currently operational U14C/U15C Blue Whales have been fitted (or retro-fitted) with probably the last surviving original horn apparatus that blares out that C7 chord over recent times:

915 was taken out of service toward the end of 2009, after which her horn apparatus was transplanted into....
902
(From the end of 2009 and throughout much of 2010)

My video. (And yes, that's me saying goodbye to the drivers at 0:23 and hollering at the end!)
902's horn was afterwards replaced by the comedy-prop-type. :(
For at least a year that followed, none of PNR's in-service locomotives had it, until...
917
(Presumably after she was reactivated last year)

As I've repeatedly noted countless times here in SkyscraperCity, that C7 chord is what gives PNR's Blue Whales their distinct character - most fitting those of the U14C/U15Cs in particular. And that is what makes it my favorite horn sound. If all of PNR's in-service U14C/U15Cs were fitted with it and they are competently taken care of, PNR would truly be worthy of the rebirth it's going through now.
And that would definitely be worthy of a celebratory "YIPPEE-KI-YAY!" cry from this devoted rail fan at the end of each ride.

It looks like horror "Nakakatakot Horn mode" for me since im gradeschooler.
Mojacko January 17th, 2012, 11:22 PM ^^ "Nakakatakot" horn!?:lol::rofl: That's a fun way to describe it! (No kidding. Really.)
But seriously, though, by simple definition, a locomotive's horn is a WARNING signal - it is right and appropriate for it to sound scary because for all you know, it could be the last sound one hears before being run over and not seeing another day.
So in other words: a locomotive's horn should sound "nakakatakot" like my favorite C7 chord - rather than the "nakakatawa" overblow detached-note sound which doesn't sound like it could be taken seriously.
BECAUSE, to reiterate: locomotive horns are warning signals. Not comedy props.
absinthe_888 January 18th, 2012, 05:43 AM ^^ Anung locomotive ba yung C7 chord? Kasi I really like 921's horn tone right now. That sound reminds me of my childhood riding the train going to Ragay, CamSur.
Mojacko January 18th, 2012, 05:57 AM ^^ I have yet to check it out in person, but I would presume the current holder of the C7 chord horn is Locomotive 917, as of last Christmas when PhilippineRailways shot the video I quoted above.

Yung sumakay yung brod ko nung Sunday bound for Naga, 1 oras daw atrasado.

Dosen't leave them open to legal action if someone is killed?
Happens in the Philippines, while this is far more blatant.
alcogoodwin January 20th, 2012, 02:33 AM Guys, I have been mucking around with a new website for our slowly growing group of modellers of things Philippines.
First time on a Wordpress site and I have to say that I think its remarkably better than the very limiting Blogger ones.

Mojacko January 20th, 2012, 03:22 PM Howdy-ho!
Just to take a brief comedy break, here are just a couple of examples demonstrating PNR's not-serious-sounding horn, wherein when the lever is pulled, it gives out an overblow (of a certain note, usually in soprano range), succeeded immediately by the intended main note (normally in tenor or alto range).
Locomotive 902
(Since early 2011)
f3qQcJ3or8w
PNR's most common "comedy prop" - Soprano E overblow, followed by Tenor G
My vid, taken back in March of 2011. This was the last trip pulled by Old Reliable I've ridden on to date; in fact, the last time I've seen or heard of her in active service. (BTW - that's me chatting with the drivers and hollering at the end.)
Locomotive 918
(As of August of 2010, when she was painted in White/Blue FilTrack livery and based at Naga)
8NU6Ljq8XEY
Soprano G overblow, followed by Alto B flat
Vid by fellow SSCer Batang Riles (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/member.php?u=372778)
918's horn was replaced (by one in Tenor G) before being given her current livery. Some time afterwards, the horn was replaced again (by a C chord: baritone C, tenor E, tenor G).
Anyway, here I describe what makes a detached-note overblowing horn sound not serious:
1. From the way it sounds, it shows off the neglect or incompetent maintenance work performed on it.
2. People about to get hit by a train blasting an unintentionally humorous sound are likely to die laughing rather than run for their lives. A potential train-runover victim could be so distracted laughing it off that he/she wouldn't know it's his/her final seconds as a mortal! Not good!
3. As I've noted more times here in SkyscraperCity than I can remember, a deliberately neglected (or badly-maintained) horn resulting in it sounding like that overall takes PNR's GE U14C/U15C Blue Whales out of character!
4. Finally, I would just like to reiterate the basic definition of a locomotive's horn: it is a warning signal and NOT a comedy prop like those exemplified in the videos I post above.
Thoughts on this, anyone?
My apologies in advance for any inflammatory disagreement this may cause, as well as for any offense or insult it may be to any fellow rail fan.

balay_1 January 22nd, 2012, 06:08 PM Howdy-ho!
May pagka-horror ang tunog ng horn ng P.N.R. Commex Locomotive.

alcogoodwin January 24th, 2012, 08:56 AM Howdee chaps,
I've long planned to do a railway info site to compliment our PRHS blogs and main website.
The discovry of a new host has made this idea a bit more viable and a new site is being econstructed at 'Philippine Railway Historical Society' (http://prhsociety.wordpress.com/).
The site, which is solely a front page at the moment, will eventually bring all my other pages together, as well as other supported projects in the Philippines, links to all related Philippine transportation websites and hopefully news and other information. It is also planned that the site will continue the proud PRHS tradition of promoting rail usage, and rail tourism, through voluntary means, in the future.
People with a love of Philippine railways are extended an open invitation to join our historical, news, modelling and photography group/forums. You will always be welcome in our Philippine railway family.
We be here to help you and promote the hobby/
Planning Democracy January 24th, 2012, 11:30 AM Sorry, I'm out of touch with the news, but what's the latest on North Rail? Has this been put on hold?
Recently went to Subic, although NLEX and the SCTEX are convenient, it's still tiring going by road. If we had more long distance railways it would bridge the gap between road travel and air. I personally would like to take a comfortable long distance rail than a bus.

CLARK FREEPORT, Pampanga, Philippines – Transportation and Communications Secretary Mar Roxas said here yesterday that the Arroyo administration contracted a Chinese firm that had “zero experience” in rail construction for the still unfinished Caloocan-to-Clark Northrail project.
This, as Roxas said the Chinese government is again willing to provide as much as $2 billion for the project.

Bahay_Kubo January 28th, 2012, 04:36 PM hello to all Filipino and foreign railfans, and friends! :)

^^ tama!! Tsaka di naman pinipinturahan ang riles. Kaya talagang kakalawangin yon.

youngster0814 January 29th, 2012, 04:38 AM hello to all Filipino and foreign railfans, and friends! :)
saang lugar yang pinalitan ang riles? siguro naman kahit may kalawang yung mga bakal na ginamit ay hindi naman siya "substandard", as how Sir shranethomas pointed it out.
sana nga lang ay maayos yung ginawang pagpapalit. i ride the PNR trains whenever i go to San Juan and sa totoo lang ay medyo marami-rami nang mga dapat ayusin.
along AA-SUC segment sir

Those were the times when the philippines were not that really poor yet nor chaotic.
Now, you dont have to stop at any bus stop and you dont have to fall in line to ride in the bus. Too much undiscipline citizens, too much street children, and too much squatters and homeless.
But in fairness, marami nang progress ngayon, its really slow but atleast there are developments.
riles28 January 31st, 2012, 01:07 AM Update lang po as of 7:15 a.m. ( Jan. 31, 2012 ) ay nagbalik byahe po ang kiha 52 pero di ko alam kung lagi naba itong tatakbo o as extra train lang in case of emergency na may masirang DMU
alcogoodwin January 31st, 2012, 03:54 AM Now, you dont have to stop at any bus stop and you dont have to fall in line to ride in the bus. .
This has always struck me as a strange comment.
"Fall in line"
You see it at stations, in banks, you even see it in malls.
While I have seen many people line up at these signs, I have yet to see them proceed to fall.
I think its about time that people obeyed these signs and start falling over while waiting to be served. :)

Kiha is being driven by the train drivers and trainees for familiarization of the Kiha52. They just went back and forth from IRRI up to Masaya Station at Laguna. Masaya station is an abondoned station. The funny thing is the guard at the IRRI gate reported to their office that the train is going back and forth so we have to adjust our stopping point just before the crossing, how silly. Next Monday PNR will be back at IRRI for more practice.
On the way to the IRRI at Sta Rosa Laguna we swiped a small white Honda Jazz at its back. Fortunately the driver survived after turning her car 360 degrees, not a flip over 360. Cops went to the scene after the accident and hold us for couple of minutes. The conductor talked with the police officers, after a 10 minutes of waiting we continued towards IRRI.

Some parts of the car where thrown away on nearby creek. The crossing has gate keeper as it is an illegal crossing.
