shranethomas March 27th, 2009, 10:56 AM Blue and Orange. I believe they will retain those colors, blue whales working together with the whitesharks. Pero salamat talaga at this is better than nothing. Exciting times are comming ahead talaga. And thank you to the contributions talagang updated ako even though I am far away.

Well the color is fine. I only observed that this color is seen on some stations in India. Thats makes Dagupan (the small steam engine) looks like a Indian steam train.

Are these the new Rotem DMU's from Korea? They don't look too new. I'm underwhelmed, I thought they would look like those new sleekly designed ones! Well as long as they work properly...
Lucentino March 27th, 2009, 03:44 PM ^Great pics @kaelthas18 you're the man! September is approaching and hopefully the plan be achieved.
I have suggested a DVD covering the old and new eras of PNR.
This could certainly also be done to cover that listed in the earlier posting and could also be a tool for promoting the benefits of further extentions to the nations railway system.
Perhaps such a documentary could get further airtime on ABS-CBN, if they can be convinced to run something pro-rail again.
Brad
Yup, it will not just be of informational value, but an eye opener as well to all who are opposed to the re-birth and success of PNR, and this nation. I hope the media would be interested in this. Anybody got connections?
Let us continue our small steps... awareness is the key!
Sad. Pero pwede pa buhayin ito for freight service.
Many thanks also to you Sir Brad. I'm excited to have a copy of the newsletter. Is reproduction via xerox is allowed because your's truly is planning to share it with my fellow commuters and give copies to some PNR personnel?
Moral booster for the men & women of PNR!
Hehehe, thanks sir.
Salamat tol!

They are brand new alright. Rotem DMU's have lots of different designs. We can have the better looking ones later. Let PNR gain back respectability and profitability first, then there is no other way but to move forward. :)

sa APril raw ang inaguration and test drive nito together with Madam President.. from tayuman- alabang daw
but the most important problem is.. 20% plang ng rails from tayuman-alabang ang napapalitan..wla pa ung kabilang rails and most of it are recycle rails..
and also squatters from BIcutan are still there.. only 70% have been cleared already
while SUCAt-alabang ..:ohno: 10% plang naddemolished... sumasayad pa mga rubble sa train
more to come..
Well we happy to see this new train....MABUHAY TAYONG LAHAT!!!!
Lucentino March 27th, 2009, 03:51 PM Wow! These personalities are the greatest so far in PNR rebuild and they contributed so much, very much to the historical research and preservations. Thank you so much guyss...
They are the "Big Blue Whale" and "Great White Shark"! :cheers1::drunk:
PNR SOUTHRAIL GO....GO....GO!!!!

wla pa bro.. sa inaguration na..hehe.. anyway,, nakita mo may screen ung dmu?ehehe iwas bato ng mga bintana.. im sure magagasgasan ito for its first week.. madami pa din tlagang squatters.. the setback of the demolished squatters from the outer rail in some areas are only 3meters... kaya nakakatakot isipin na this great white shark of ours eh madungisan..hayyy
anyway 3 coaches ata ang isang set ng train.. fully airconditioned din.. panira sa view ung screen nito.. by the way ang mga blue whale pala eh bitin sa hakbang sa mga bagong station platform (il post the pics later..) the new stations are designed for the great whites..hehe
3. maalikabok...
4. kahit ikaw manirahan ka sa gilid ng riles o sa lrt maiinis ka tlga.kasi maingay and u have less privacy..

pnr must really put wired fence or concrete fence to avoid people crossing the riles, squatting near its riles, throwing anything to the trains , and most of all squatters are eyesore to the passengers.

I bet those original residents of areas freed from squatters is extremely thankful for the rehabilitation of trains....Imagine, less eyesore, hopefully better lives for the squatters who decided to relocate faithfully, and most of all less crime. All this positive things because of trains! I haven't even mentioned the best mass transport system for pinoys......There is just so much positives the trains will bring to us!!!

wheel of steel March 28th, 2009, 04:47 AM Thanks tol...Thank you so much... You gonna be like me and even better... Continue posting sweetheart.... PNR should always be better than any railway system in the country.
wheel of steel March 28th, 2009, 04:51 AM Yesterday, Mr. Hero Pamintuan was interviewed by the DZMM tandem Ka Tonying...
He said that 71 had been pile bored so far at Malolos Viaduct. This is the greatest no. so far and more engineers expected to work with the current Chinese Team.. So by April, Super full blast na talaga ang gagawin..
Ed said that the structure of the Malolos and Valenzuela viaduct are so massive that it requires 8 pcs of 1 meter diameter bore pile is required to erect one massive column.
It is expected that starting April, many Filipino subcontractor will join the construction thus expediting the completion of the first 16 km of the tracks.

Moral booster for the men & women of PNR!
Salamat tol!

You can see the platform of the new DMU train, napakababa lang. So ang riles which is malalim pa ngayon ay kailang mapantay dun sa height ng DMU platform. The general result is that more ballast will be poured making the railway more sligtly higher than porevious level.

Sir, halos 10% pa lang ang natatangal between Alabang and Binan.

If ever, mga 8m lang ang dapat nilang kunin in between. Pero may mga umalis na rin ba? Maguumpisa na ang construction ng Phase 2 from Alabang to Calamba this 2009. Do you think they can make it? Nice naman if they will build road but as long as it doesnt affect the ROW, ok lang yun.

Well we happy to see this new train....MABUHAY TAYONG LAHAT!!!!

Before that place is full kangkongan and farmland. Don't get me wrong our house is arround 12 meters ang layo sa Row.

All I can say is kahit na yung stations eh mukhang basic pa lang.. pero dami potential.
firebar10 March 28th, 2009, 08:19 AM I was about to ask regarding the rail tracks looking too sunk on the gravel ballast( am I right?) and too low for the platform, but sir WoS answered it already in one of the replies above. My question now is for the Paco station. Its such in a sorry state right now, and to think that its one of the large prime properties of PNR in Manila. I want to know if they have plans to return Paco to its original use as a main stop for Bicol bound trains in Manila, or it will be just a regular stop on the commuter line as it is currently. I remember, I think after Paco the next stop is Binan for the Bicol trains.
On another note, the pics shows how wide the right of way of PNR in Metro Manila and the creeping return of informals. I think unauthorized entry into rail tracks/PNR properties should be made a criminal offense to be handled first at the baranggay level where it occured and forwarded to the police for proper prosecution. Its for their own safty and that of the riding public. Unless your doing maintenance work, you have no business walking along rail tracks.

Don't worry about the Old Paco Station, RHIsPi allready saved the station from further destruction. Its one of the major project of RHIspi to restore the station. You can check their website. I am not sure if there is any posibility that they will remove the ugly structure beside it, but they should remove it. And again I am not sure if they will use it as a station again. But with the current progress we will yet see more developments as time passes by, just pray for it, Lets all pray that it really will happen.

Wow its very nice to know that what remains of Paco has been saved already by RHISP. I do hope that in the future when all pressing needs for PNR rehabilitation have been met, that they would now proceed with the restoration and beautification of historical PNR Stations, like Paco where a newly built edifice that is faithful to the original ArtDeco design will be in place once again.
To the pics contributor, we salute you for your enthusiastic efforts in keeping this thread updated with your valuable pictures. Thank you!

Yes, tomorrow is going to be a big day in RIHSPI history I imagine.
The outcome will surely mean both the Philippine and Australian chapters of the society will need all the support and help they can get to bring this very important history back to its original condition and available for museum use and display.
I am sure Jaime would love to here from anyone who is willing to lend a helping hand restoring these wonderful items.

alcogoodwin March 28th, 2009, 02:34 PM Because most rail systems today uses the standard rail gauge. .
This is true, but as I often point out, it dosen't mean that it is less capable.
Australia's fastest passenger trains run on this narrow gauge, while our heaviest coal trains to do also.
The gauge can do far better in the Philippines than what the government is aiming for with it, 100% more when it comes to passenger speeds.

It is certainly a nice blue, but I am unsure about its usage here.
Are they going to do the whole building this colour, or will the white area remain white? GASP- worse, it wont be done orange will it
I think an absolutely MASSIVE thank you must go out to everyone today. The selection of photos has been incredible guys - very good work.
I already have enough awesome photos for another 3 issues of the newsletter, and that was if it was just about the rebuild

shranethomas March 28th, 2009, 03:12 PM Yes, tomorrow is going to be a big day in RIHSPI history I imagine.
The outcome will surely mean both the Philippine and Australian chapters of the society will need all the support and help they can get to bring this very important history back to its original condition and available for museum use and display.
I am sure Jaime would love to here from anyone who is willing to lend a helping hand restoring these wonderful items.

I hope they will pick the last of tora tora remains. Even just 1 set of 3 units will do and repaint back to metro tren colors or the old blue and white colors.

wheel of steel March 29th, 2009, 04:35 AM PNR Right of Way beautification is yet to begin... after the completion and operation of PNR Caloocan to Calamba railway rehabilitation.
Their function is to secure the exact measure of the row and then they will put barrier to it. The purpose of MMDA is to further secure the row from illegal settlers.
The section of FTI to Caloocan is under study by a consortium that is planning to build a 4 lane elevated expressway above the PNR ROW. With this plan, the MMDA is scheduled to undertake massive fencing to secure the 30-40m varying right of way of PNR. Under this circumstance, the construction of SKYWAY is ready by then...

Guys can you please help me with some rather urgent questions.
I would be very much appreciative.
1- I don't follow these appointments, so can you tell me if these are the two people that currently hold these two PNR positions?
Chairman - Michael Defensor
Vice-Chairman - Manuel Anda
2- Can someone give me the actual postal address (snailmail) for the PNR HQ in Tutuban please?
3- An actual postal address for the big cheese, President Gloria.
Please can anyone help.
Best wishes

Another eyesore for poor old Manila.
When will government learn, focus on railway development, not road development.
PNR would be better served leasing out some air rights to developers, especially above major stations.

agree sir.
Well, the problem here has something to do with the political economy of infrastructure here in the country.
With Japan as the main donor-creditor plus with a car industry and vehicle market dominated by Japanese firms, the government is forced by creditors to spend more on roads to spur vehicle sales rather than our government develop public mass transport system like railways.
Another is that because the economy is incapable of providing enough jobs, why would you displace millions of people who depend on the transport system (i.e. truckers, jeepney, tricycle and bus drivers, operators, fabricators, sellers).
That's why among the few bright spots of the Arroyo government is the rehabilitation of the PNR and the expansion of the other rail system. This will be the legacy of this administration.

How did they actually do it? Galing, wala na sila. Hopefully the word "Riles" will no longer be associated with squatters.

I hope and pray that the next administration will consider all the suggestions of the forumers here and make the rehabilitation of PNR successful and lasting.
Its time to for the administation of Gloria to offer PNR to would be private investors especially those who are tried and tested like Benpres, Metro Pacific, DM Consunji and even ICTSI (operated the freight service of the PNR during Ramos time)
Ayala also became once upon a time interested with the PNR.
They can develop the Makati part of PNR.
Villar group for the Muntinlupa.
Yulos for the Laguna PNR.
lochinvar March 29th, 2009, 10:11 AM This projected 4 lane expressway is not only the vital artery, it is the aorta, that will connect the two main expressways north and south of Manila. As of now vehicles are clogging Metromanila's roads because of the absence of this nexus between these two expressways. In effect this slows down the movement of people and goods and hence a drawback to the economy.

Thats great. Thus forcing people to reduce their dependence on the good ol polluting motor vehicle and look for other options for transporting people and goods - rail for instance.
Many countries have finally come to the realisation that new roads are not the answer, it just delays the inevitable return of build up and immediately transfers the same problem elsewhere.

With an aggressive new PNR pushing for freight and leasing of air rights commercially, we could see a railway system better than ever before.

Another way of giving jobs to displaced transport workers will be the eventual development of a local manufacturing, fabrication and maintenance industry of railway system in the Philippines.
I hope to see Pinoys will take care of the production and maintenance of all trains in the country from the LRT, MRT to the PNR.
If the country is capable already of building and maintaining its own railway, then the government and the private sector can build more railways across the country including urban trams at half the cost when the government imports everything.
I cant imagine the positive impact of this to our iron and steel, machinery, transport and even our domestic tourism industry.
I myself love to commute instead of driving my car.
I am excited to enjoy exciting tourist spots in the Bicol region for example.

i had the opportunity of riding pnr yung penafrancia express nila ...airline comfort yun complete with steward and stewardesses...reclining yung upuan..aircon...at meron blanket dahil sa lamig sa gabi....cguro this time dapat nde na penafrancia ang pangalan...dapat something new and innovative....and dapat two way traffic sya dahil pag isa lang minsan naghihintayan sa station pag na delay ang kasalubong yun ang inaayawan ng mga nagmamadaling pasahero....
ionmarx March 29th, 2009, 01:22 PM Very sleek, modern and a good vehicle that will represent the new PNR!!!
I think we can build this kind of train, maybe in the immediate future.
^^ Mainam yan! Sana yung transfer of knowledge mangyari na rin para we can do it on our own :D

Did anyone today by chance check the details on the builders plate? That be where all the juicy information is for the railfan.
Also does the coding on the front car relate to the whole three, or do the two power cars and the intermediate car have three seperate codings?
Thanks
Brad
alcogoodwin March 29th, 2009, 01:32 PM if the northrail and southrail is rehabilitated...we will be number 2 in asean...in terms of railways...thailand lang ang tatalo sa atin...
Northrail possibly in terms of current moderninity, but sadly not in size :-(
Southrail, they way they are doing it, would be behind select lines in Indonesia at least. If a full proper rebuild eventually happens, then thats a different matter altogether.

Buti kung delay lang. A Metrolink commuter train and a Santa Fe train collided head on in Los Angeles because there is only one track in that section near San Fernando Valley.
kaelthas18 March 29th, 2009, 01:40 PM PNR Right of Way beautification is yet to begin... after the completion and operation of PNR Caloocan to Calamba railway rehabilitation.
^^

All trains should come standard with trips, I often wonder why they don't do this.
Safeworking is only as good as the crews obeying it, beyond that a backup is needed.
There is some awesome Youtube footage of two BNSF freights colliding head on when one SPADs badly.

This is very interesting.
How many cars are there? I think it is three.
Does this make them numbered:
DMR-01
ITR-01
DMR-02
If so, I wonder if the next set in line would be:
DMR-03
ITR-02
DMR-04
THe results being 12 DMRs 1-12 and 6 ITR 1-6.
I wonder if the train can be feasibly lengthened by using more intermediate cars?

Hmmm thats a shame, but I suppose they could always fix a lot of them. Perhaps just lengthen the major stations where longer express trains could stop.
Man, they really need a railway lobby group there.

1- I don't follow these appointments, so can you tell me if these are the two people that currently hold these two PNR positions?

2- Can someone give me the actual postal address (snailmail) for the PNR HQ in Tutuban please?
3- An actual postal address for the big cheese, President Gloria.
Please can anyone help.

And good work @Mithril Cloud, you could pass for a Technical photographer!
I do hope this new 'animal' came with an owner's and maintenance manuals as a standard. It is where we can find lots more info.

Yup, I believe these DMUs will be for Linkage use only, so the set-up.
For Bicol trips, it will be the refurbished Loco-hauled rail cars.

Planning Democracy March 29th, 2009, 05:13 PM Another way of giving jobs to displaced transport workers will be the eventual development of a local manufacturing, fabrication and maintenance industry of railway system in the Philippines.
The squatters should be given opportunities to have jobs or small businesses sa PNR, that way stakeholder rin sila and they won't want to destroy or disrupt something because they lost their "homes".
Like for example the maintenance and cleanliness of the railways, or even washing the trains.

WTH! Asphalt overlay can be fixed. I just hope the ROW is still intact. Freight service should be the bread & butter of PNR to subsidize the passenger service. This is the advantage of PNR over LRT/MRT.

Dream come true.
I hope they'll push through on the rehabilitation of PNR and extend the lines to remote areas para accesible na lahat through railway hindi lang passengers sana pati mga goods.
I hope as well mas maganda pa nila ung mga train stations then tumulong na rin ang private sector sa pag develop ng mga railway stations kikita rin sila pag naging comercialised na ang mga ito.

I am wondering, given the bright orange on this DMU, if they will end up painting rollingstock like CMC-201.
This is a very attractive livery and would not have the same amount of white/silver colour that would be used if matched closely to the DMU. It would be a nightmare to keep clean.
Any talk of a wash plant there to keep these new vehicles clean?

Lucentino March 30th, 2009, 02:45 AM Thank you so much for this.
Yep it was a long list of questions - I always seem to have long lists of question, so much I have to learn
THanks for doing that for me.

Anytime mate. I have more questions in my mind than you do. Like, do you mind if I ask what will you do with those addresses? :)
Lucentino March 30th, 2009, 02:48 AM If they had any real intention to do so they would not have sold everything to us I am sad to say.
Hopefully some other operators will see the new railways and see the benefit of running their own trains, or having PNR provide the hook and pull service for them.
There has to be a lot of opportunity there for this.
Brad
A lot of companies are diversifying and I think there will be not just one company interested in freight service as long as the RR line is readily available.
alcogoodwin March 30th, 2009, 02:51 AM Meanwhile, in Tayuman station:
http://i77.photobucket.com/albums/j74/ryucloud/pnr_tayuman_platform_mc.jpg
Are there any plans to rip up the entire Tutuban/Tayuman yard and relay it all over again? Its a wonder they didn't redo the whole hard before thinking about platforms.
On the subject of platforms, I noticed that Sucat used to have tracks at one stage. I think they are still there, but just covered.
Did the station actually have four platforms, or was it just used for stabling passenger trains or passing freights?
Any of the extra tracks look like getting reinstated here?

Feel free to ask any questions, I am more than happy to help where I can.
I am slowly building up a datebase of info here for the RIHSPI-ANZ, historical and current, to assist members here with questions.
Historical stuff will likely get used over time in the newsletter.
Have sent a copy of the first newsletter to President Gloria as part of a mailout this morning of promotional copies.
Have to get more printed tomorrow for members etc.
Want to get this all out of the way and start on the second one :-)

The newsletter is actually a hard copy publication from here, one copy has gone to Jaime today.
I am planning to pdf it and send it to the RIHSPI for all RIHSPI members there. Not sure how a small B4 (B5?) publication will translate in a pdf form, printed it may have the pages mixed up a bit showing 1,12,2,11,3,10,4,9 etc etc.
Suppose we shall find out shortly.

Only the tracks that matter to the use of the Brand New DMU coaches. We can see on the picture that 5 bays will be built with 2 island platforms.
The side track is still there. See the design of the Sucat platform, the roof indicates that still the platform is an island. I think they will revived the old track. The switches are already there...

Indonesia dominates narrow gauge railway operation in terms of size and also begins to modernize by electrifying their tracks. Malaysian railway is so clean. While Thailand size is that matter.. All of their tracks weight 50kg/m.

North Railways needs $300m to get moving
By Joyce Pangco Pañares
The National Economic and Development Authority is looking at increasing by $300 million the funding for the North Luzon Railways Corp. to pay the Chinese contractor that is building the rail project and end a year-long halt in operations.
Northrail president Edgardo Pamintuan said the approval of the Neda Board is “crucial” as the contractor, the China National Machinery and Equipment Corp. Group (CNMEG), has put on hold the resumption of the construction pending an increase in the project ceiling.
“Northrail will be happy if the Neda Board approves its application for an increased project ceiling because the project can now be implemented and completed at realistic current day prices. We were informed that the Neda Board will discuss it on Tuesday and that it is for their approval already,” Pamintuan said.
“The Chinese contractor and its Filipino contractors are waiting for the approval before they fully deploy their resources on the project. That is how important the Neda Board approval is,” he added.
Pamintuan said the fresh funding, which will complete the $503-million first phase of the project, will cover inflationary costs, foreign exchange differences, and variations in the original scope of work.
The amount being asked by Northrail Corp. is almost the same as the $299 million being demanded by CNMEG but Pamintuan insisted that the figure was reached after the agency did due diligence on the cost adjustments.
In February last year, CNMEG unilaterally suspended work on the Northrail project that will connect Caloocan City to Malolos City in Bulacan and demanded an additional $299 million in the contract price.
Of the additional $299 million, almost two-thirds or $211 million was to cover foreign exchange losses, inflation and costs of the delay in construction while the remaining $88.63 million was due to variations in the original scope of work.
Previously, CNMEG also blamed the government for the construction delays, citing the slow relocation of the illegal settlers whose houses will be covered by the project.

Previously, CNMEG also blamed the government for the construction delays, citing the slow relocation of the illegal settlers whose houses will be covered by the project.
They're working it now but it's not yet full blast. Pamintuan in an interview by ABS last week said that all pile boring and stone column works are under construction and will go on full blast as many Filipino and Chinese sub-contractors will join the force this coming month of April. And surely, NEDA is about to approved the additional extra cost $300m. It has been approved already by the board last year upon the workshop held in China and the evaluation of the due diligence team sent by the Philippine government in China.
With the expected approval NEDA the amount of $300m additional budget this April, it is also expected the acceleration of the project to be completed in Mid 2010.

he he he... biruin you, 2004 pa na released ang budget na original $400m. Actually, hindi naman natin sisadya kasi we did not encouter na mahirap talagang magrelocate. Even Noli finds it more harder but due to his will, kahit papaano, naalis nya ang mga squatters sa Phase 1. But this is not enough, kasi the old ROW of PNR is very narrow. They did not forsee this thinking that the ROW would be the same after Tayuman. After Tayuman, the tracks have all standard 30m right of way all the way to Legazpi.
What happened is that Northrail really had a hard time acquiring additional private lots just to correct the 30 meter alignment. But surely while the construction is on-going for phase 1, madadagdagan pa ang ROW...
Nagamahal rin yung budget kasi instead of using embankment, contractor was opted to build retaining walls like MRT3 on at-grades. This quiet expensive than embankment. When using embankment, at least 30 meters ang kailang but if the ROW is below 20m, retaining walls is the best option..
Look at this picture from Laguindingan airport access road. I see a 60 meter wide ROW with embankment reaching height of 8 meters. Just look at the base of the embankment, halos ma occupy na lahat ng 3/4 ng ROW.

Yes, that's true. He said that it really more feasible than any other phases. It is as feasible as building the Clark to Subic Phase 2 of Northrail or even more better..
Cagayan Valley is boasted of rich agricultural lands. Gagana ng husto ang freight business dito and even passenger service. Cabanatuan and Tuguegarao is really a big market and city. Remember, a good working railways are the ones that serve cargo. There are researchers conducted already many years ago. The government is likely to cough up millions of dollars in subsidies for the operation of Chinese-funded North Luzon Railway until 2028, according to a government document.
“NorthRail’s projected cash flow analysis shows a negative outstanding cash balance until 2028 which is at its highest at around $368.5 million in 2016,” according to a projected cash-flow statement prepared by the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA).
The document also showed that if the government failed to secure financing from external sources, the project would need an estimated annual average support from the national government worth $18.28 million every year until 2028.
“National government advances to NorthRail for debt servicing is around P1.063 billion as of end 2008,” it added.
Based on the financial viability estimate of the North Luzon Railways Corp. (NLRC), which showed that the NorthRail had financial internal rate of return of 5.179 percent versus a weighted average cost of capital of 4.619 percent.
But the Department of Finance said the project’s estimated financial internal rate of return is only at 4.31 percent versus a weighted average cost of capital of 4.39 percent. The department’s estimate included input taxes in investment cost and excluded private-sector investment in rolling stocks from investment cost, among other reasons.
The computations of the NLRC and the Finance department both indicate that the rail project will not even break even. They only differ in the amount of projected losses.
Justify plans
The National Economic and Development Authority has asked the National Luzon Railway Corp. to justify plans, to engage the private sector to deliver its portion of the civil works, and to deliver the trains before 2013. These are needed in order to prevent the project from requiring any more support from the national government.
The NorthRail is requesting $280 million in additional funds to finance cost overruns, as the rising prices of materials have caught up with the project, which has been stalled partly because of a design problem.
The NorthRail Project Phase 1 Section 1 is funded by the $421-million soft loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, while the government counterpart amounted to $82 million.
The China National Machinery and Equipment Group is the contractor of the project.
Project scope
The railway project from Caloocan to Malolos, Bulacan, will interconnect and improve access to major transportation facilities in the Manila-Clark-Subic economic triangle, particularly Fort Bonifacio, Clark Special Economic Zone, Subic Special Economic Zone and Poro Point in La Union. The project is expected to accelerate development in the region.
The NorthRail project will have stations in Caloocan and Valenzuela in Metro Manila and others in Bulacan province—Marilao, Bo-caue, Guiguinto and Malolos.
The National Housing Authority has so far relocated some 20,000 families residing within the Philippine National Railway’s right of way.
NorthRail has also undertaken the clearing of the debris left by the demolished structures of the relocated families.
The NorthRail Corp. expects the completion of civil works to be in August of 2009.
China EXIM Bank has allocated $500 million for the project’s second phase, while the NorthRail management is currently finalizing the $90-million loan with the Development Bank of the Philippines for the local counterpart and other miscellaneous cost.

If and when there is some news announcing the new DMUs, I may prepare a Wikipedia section on PNR's rolling stock. I'd love this to show up there. :D
Speaking of stations, San Andres station is substantially completed. Well, at least the platform and roof.

alcogoodwin March 30th, 2009, 10:05 PM Interesting Survey In The Phils!
Who do you think are good leaders who should succeed Pres. Arroyo as President? You may give up to three names).
Twenty-seven percent of the respondents named Vice President De Castro, 26 percent went for Sen. Villar, 25 percent mentioned Sen. Legarda and 23 percent cited Sen. Escudero.
The five were followed by Sen. Mar Roxas (15 percent), Sen. Panfilo Lacson (14 percent) and former Pres. Joseph Estrada (13 percent). No list of names was provided to prompt the respondents.
The survey found 4 percent mentioning Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago, while about 1 percent mentioned Sen. Richard Gordon, Sen. Ramon Revilla, Jr. Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, Sen. Francis Pangilinan, Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority Chairman Bayani Fernando.
Thirteen percent of the respondents could not give an answer, while 7 percent had no one to recommend.
alcogoodwin March 30th, 2009, 10:22 PM Where is Zobel Roxas Station?
I love the drivers comment about it happening when trains are no longer in good condition. I wonder at what stage some of those carriages actually end up finally being considered as bad condition.

kratos1211 March 31st, 2009, 12:13 AM Gov’t told to look for external funding for Northrail project
from bworldonline (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW033109/content.php?id=048)
THE GOVERNMENT needs to tap external financial sources for the North Luzon Railway project, which is not going to earn money until the year 2028, according to a study.
The study, commissioned by the government, showed that the 82-kilometer rail project would continue to post "negative outstanding cash balance until 2028."
This would mean shelling out an estimated $18.4 million yearly for 19 years to state-led North Luzon Railways Corp. to sustain the project, the study showed. The largest funding gap will occur in 2016, at $368.5 million.
"This already [includes] the assumed $317.24-million assistance from the national government for [project-related costs]. [The estimated] annual average support that will be needed ... is around $18.28 million per annum until 2028, if Northrail is not able to secure financing from external [sources]."
The government released P1.063 billion for the Northrail project last year.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Ralph G. Recto said yesterday a request by North Luzon Railways Corp. to hike the total project cost to $1.3 billion from $1.176 billion has been approved by a Cabinet panel under the inter-agency Investment Coordination Committee.

Yeah - certainly would not be quite the momentous event they are hoping for.
I am sure the media there would have a field day though.
So is anyone going out to get photos of the BIG CHEESE on the new WHITE WHALE?
