Im unaware of any UK rail based operators utilizing their products though am fairly certain they were looked at two years prior.

mrlow28 July 10th, 2009, 11:30 AM It only takes three tracks for a station in a double track line to allow a high speed pass for an express train. Just like this Fresh Hitachi making a 130kph pass at this station... eg. Pasay Road PNR Station.

After checking binalikan ulit si T407.

Most likely the Blue Whale. Though I was not able to see the locomotive, but the rolling stocks are passenger cars which is colored blue, has large windows, and still sporting the old logo.
And yes, I saw the maintenance car (Plasser and Theurer). I still don't know if the maintenance car is a tamping machine or otherwise.

Kapag kaliwa train 402 and pag kanan train 401.

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has proposed an underground route along Roxas Boulevard which would connect Manila’s airports and seaports after projections showed that there will be traffic congestion in the area by 2015, which may also affect movement of cargoes.
The DPWH on Thursday said it sent in May the proposal for a P34.54-billion Metro Manila Tunnel Expressway, which will take five years to construct, to the National Economic and Development Authority. The DPWH completed the study in December last year.
“The most significant benefit to be generated by the proposed expressway is the improvement of accessibility to the [Manila] North Harbor and South Harbor. Since both harbors contain the major transport facilities for cargo movements in Metro Manila, the efficiency of cargo transport would be greatly improved,” the DPWH proposal indicated.
North Harbor is the country’s biggest domestic port, while South Harbor is the country’s second-largest container terminal that also handles bulk cargoes.
Manila Harbour Centre, a private port that claims to handle the biggest bulk cargo in the country, also operates within the North Harbor area.
Phase 1 of the tunnel-expressway project involves an eight-kilometer underground road from MIA Road through the whole stretch of Roxas Boulevard, which will cost about P9.9 billion.
The second phase involves a 20-kilometer stretch from P. Burgos Street to North Luzon Expressway through Malabon, Navotas and Valenzuela, at a cost of P24.64 billion.
The funding for the project may come from a mix of international sources, such as those from the multilateral agencies, while the rest will be shouldered by the government.
DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. said the project envisions cutting travel time from R-10 in the Manila North Harbor to Las Piñas to just 10 minutes using the tunnel.
“The projected expressway connects the northern and southern parts of Metro Manila and will permit higher travel speeds, thereby greatly improving traffic capacity and flow in the north and south direction. This route will serve as a bypass for traffic from the North Luzon Expressway to the port area and further south,’’ said Maria Catalina Cabral, DPWH assistant secretary for planning.
At present, Coastal Road, just one of the few routes going to Cavite province, is heavily congested, and the average travel speed is less than 10 kilometers per hour during peak hours.
“The existing heavy traffic congestion on the Coastal Road has been seriously deteriorating the port-cargo movement,” the study said, adding that the truck ban during peak hours has exacerbated the situation.
“The proposed Metro Manila Tunnel Expressway project is expected to play a key role in achieving more efficient cargo transportation by changing cargo-traffic movement significantly and solving the port-access problem. The completion of the project will allow cargo traffic to pass without being hampered by or adding to urban congestion,” the proposal said.
Cabral explained that traffic congestion in Metro Manila’s 50-kilometer radius will worsen even more as the metropolis’s population and car-volume increase, overtaking the road-network capacity.
By 2015, the population in Metro Manila would have reached 25.72 million and car ownership would have increased to 2.34 million vehicles. (With P. Atienza)
ninakaw ko lang yung post na to from another thread.
in my opinion, mas maganda yata na ni-rehabilitate na lang nila yung rail link from port area to tutuban and integrated the master plan of the Northrail/Southrail with increased rail freight traffic. this way, pwedeng gumawa na lang ng isang station/junction outside metro manila where the containers will be offloaded from trains to the trucks. this way, di na kailangan pumasok sa manila ng mga overloaded container vans.

Its too deep for DMU. Locomotive lang puede dahil sa engine location.
The government has to solve the flooding by installing huge sump pumps at strategic locations.

Pls get away devil politician....

Honestly, I don't know where are they heading but it's like this:
It was six in the afternoon, I was inside the vehicle going to Terminal 3 and the train is going to opposite direction.

How deep is that water? Traction motors on diesel -electrics are usually useless when water exceeds 10cm above the railhead.
RailEngineer July 11th, 2009, 10:29 PM Its too deep for DMU. Locomotive lang puede dahil sa engine location.
The government has to solve the flooding by installing huge sump pumps at strategic locations. Kagaya nang Holland.
It is really to deep for both, a locomotives engine location is irrelevant.
BBC2 had a documentary on flooding within Metro Manila and the use of pumps. The garbage dumped on the street was clogging them, burning out motors and rendering them useless at the greatest time of need. The garbage situation needs to be addressed first.

Does that answer my question posed Mr Spelling police offizzzer?
ponso July 11th, 2009, 11:57 PM Ha ha! I am afraid not! AFAIK, Singapore and Malaysia (both former British colonies) and Thailand (with close ties to the British) use the Queen's English and I think the same goes for Indonesia, despite it being a former Dutch colony. Besides, all of these countries drive on the left ("right") side, as opposed to Pinas where "American" dominates, and of course, we all drive on the "wrong" side..!
From your posts, I think you live around Leeds and my work takes me there quite a few times a year. Although I must say Harrogate is my "favourite" in Yorkshire...

My job takes me no further than the corner for the employers lunch.:ohno:
Rarely a holiday goes by that I don not venture north to Scotland. Late this year its a long planned family trip to Australia where alcogoodwin has promise me some great Ozzie hospitality.
ponso July 12th, 2009, 12:49 AM Enjoy Oz with Brad then - I'm sure there'll be plenty of trains and locos to talk about... And, I just might bump into you - another trip to our Glasgow office is looming and plus there may be an odd trip to group headquarters in Edinburgh later.
Back to PNR then - My mom used to drag me and my siblings on PNR trains to visit her folks up in Pangasinan province in the 80s from Paniqui town in Tarlac. I (and my brothers) always have fond memories of those magical train rides - the locos, the carriages ("cars"), the clickety-clacks. I am glad that slowly, PNR's old glory is coming back.
We're all excited - and you actually feel that in pretty overzealous forumers here (WoS, happs, Brad, DC, etc etc, and the rest [you know who are!] and I mean it in the nicest possible manner). As a lurker, I am extremely, extremely grateful for those who risk life and limb (not to mention cameras, cellphones, folding bikes, PHPs, JPYs and AUDs) to keep us updated and, yes, excited to get every bit of good news about PNR and Northrail -- quite a nice "up yours/middle finger" gesture to those in the useless mainstream media industry who think a gamboling nude fake doctor and a two-bit actress in some grainy video as "news".
Admittedly, the country certainly has a long way to go..! As a daily train commuter between Twickenham and Waterloo stations on SouthWest Trains and onwards to the Waterloo & City tube line, I know it's going to take a heck of an investment to get us at par with the UK, where of course, the Victorians have triumphed in laying rail tracks in every possible corner.
PNR and Northrail developments, no matter how slow, are a step in the right direction. I think once the first phases of these projects become operational, people and the government will realize that rail is the only way to go and I believe it will accelerate the change -- the same way people have realised that the MRT and LRT (our version of your Tube) are the future in commuting within Metropolitan Manila. I think it has raised the level of clamor and consciousness among Manilans that indeed we need a decent, efficient rail public transport, and we need it not tomorrow, but 10 years ago.
By the way Brad, I agree with you - the classic locos are much prettier than the new DMUs. And the new logo, UGH! Nothing beats the classic. Hope you and @RE enjoy OZ later in the year.

The windshield idea was brought into design because of the fear of stone throwing. It will take them several years of study on how to come up an idea that will secure the right of ways and eventually ceasing the wire mesh design on windows...

Nathan, I know enogh Tagalog to know this is funny :lol::lol:
Is is a little like Venice.
I have no idea why the trains can still operate through this, you would think the traction motors would have given out.
Back in the days when Australia's railway oprators put people and service before operational convenience and cost, we would drag out diesel hydraulics to push passenger trains through this sort of thing.
This is because they did not have the traction motor issues that diesel electrics have.
Again, I recon GE should use this sort of photo to advertise their products. PNRs locos are the toughest on eart.

alcogoodwin July 13th, 2009, 12:50 AM I'm certain he was utilizing bitter sarcasm in your direction given what you have recently informed me.
The UK has many truck societies who bring these items here and restore them. Do you perchance have a maker for this vehicle?
Howdee mate,
Yeah, no I did get the sarcasm behind it. You get used to it.
I have absolutely no idea what maker the truck was.
Will run it by a friend at the bus and truck museum and see if they know. But that museum is more buses than truck.
Whatever it is, it is rare and should not be treated with such contempt by societies there.

Mojacko July 13th, 2009, 07:29 PM Greetings, SkyscraperCity forumers!
Just yesterday (Monday, July 13th), I once again let out my inner Western [cowboy] adventurer and - for the FIRST time - rode PNR from Tutuban to Alabang, and (partially) back again! (Why partially? Details just below.)
Note: Please accept my apologies for the not-so-good quality of my photos and videos; the only camera I rely on for now is my cellphone.
Arriving at Tutuban, around 2:30 pm
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2633/3717452376_20fcdb7087_o.jpg
Seen for (possibly) the first time here on SkyscraperCity, PNR's NEW LOGO in the process of being applied above Tutuban Terminal's main entrance!
Between 2:55 and 3:30 pm, while waiting to board Train 405 to Alabang
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3496/3717452428_b63c257f9a_o.jpg
The first - and so far, only - DMU wearing the new logo, parked at a platform. (Unfortunately, though, they won't be in public commercial service until September, I was told by the staff.)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3448/3716639431_8ce4f27acd_o.jpg
All three of PNR's Plasser & Theurer rail maintenance machines.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2670/3716639607_c35dfdaf08_o.jpg
2 DMUs - the one with the new logo on the left (partially blocked by the pole - sorry!) and the other, with the older logo, on the right.
Around 3:35 pm, boarding Train 405 (departure time: 3:45)
Train 405 was being pulled by locomotive 5009, a GE U6B.
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2508/3717452742_42549ae1af_o.jpg
Platform view of the two DMUs.
Despite a long and sometimes bumpy ride, it was overall OK... (honestly, I'm not sure how else to describe it.)
We arrived in Alabang around 5:05 pm, where I disembarked, then bought a new ticket for the return trip as Train 406 (only up to Buendia). As I did that, locomotive 5009 (cab-end forward for the southbound trip) de-coupled and switched to the junction.
Around 5:15 pm, shortly after boarding Train 406 (departure time: 5:45)
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3479/3717452824_24cc273a87_o.jpg
Locomotive 5009 then switched back to re-couple (cab-end backward northbound) to the other end.
For some unknown reason (really!), I got to enjoy a RARE privilege of riding in the cab with the drivers! Here are a couple of videos to prove it:
Around 5:50 pm
0jSFWJ-DYDc
Somewhere between Sucat and Bicutan Stations. You might want to cover your ears; the horn really does get that loud up here...
Around 6:15 pm
vAN8-ycjfjc
From the cab - and the drivers' perspective - Train 406 shifting to the Pasay Road junction to let Train 407 to Binan (pulled by locomotive 915, a U14C) head southbound on the main track. Because the switch-track on the further north part of the junction (toward Buendia) is yet to be re-laid (a new switch and rail point due to replace the badly-rusted old one), we had to back down the junction after Train 407 has left Pasay Road Station, switch back to the main track, then head north again.
Around 6:25 pm, shortly after disembarking at Buendia
PWTnoMPlSfg
My sincerest thanks to the kind drivers - and PNR - for the cab ride.
Unfortunately, due to personal safety reasons - combined with my fluctuating weekly schedule, it looks like this will be my last ride on PNR for a while (I cannot guarantee when I plan to ride it again, honestly), so I share this here for posterity.
Arciga_01 July 13th, 2009, 09:08 PM Great post you did there Mojacko! :D !

alcogoodwin July 13th, 2009, 11:41 PM Philippines - President - PGMA to launch new PNR trains in Tutuban
President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will formally launch tomorrow (Tuesday, July 14) the new trains of the newly- revitalized Philippine National Railways (PNR) and unveil the PNR corporate logo in ceremonies at Tutuban Station in Tondo, Manila.
The new trains will provide the public efficient and cheaper mode of transportation aside from spurring economic development in the Metropolis and southern parts of Luzon.
Slated to welcome the President at the launching site, are Vice President Noli de Castro, PNR chairman Michael Defensor, PNR General Manager Manuel Andal, Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza, and manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, among other officials.
The Chief Executive will then lead the unveiling of the new PNR corporate logo.
The President, along with the PNR officials, will then ride the new train from Tutuban to Buendia.
During the 20-minute ride, the President is expected to interact and converse with the PNR Suking Pasahero.
The newly-revitalized PNR has introduced the following to its railway system: a recently acquired tract maintenance equipment, a prototype unit of an old coach that was fully refurbished with a new body manufactured in the Philippines, and a Korean manufactured Diesel Multiple Unit (DMU) train which consist of three cars, namely, two Driving Motor Railcar (DMR) with driver’s cabin an one intermediate Trailer Railcar (ITR) without driver’s cabin.
The new trains will now serve the commuting public bound to and from Tutuban and Alabang PNR stations.
In the early 2000s, the Philippine government underscored the need to rehabilitate the Northrail and Southrail lines, both aimed at increasing tourism and providing the public with an efficient and speedier form of transportation within the island of Luzon.
Construction has already begun on the rehabilitation of Northrail and Southrail and creating Northrail-Southrail linkage (which previously did not exist). Both China and Korea are involved with these projects.
The North and South rail projects will be upgraded from the present-day single track to a dual-track system, (separate tracks for north and south bound trains to allow for simultaneous operation) and will be capable of speeds from approximately 80 to 130 kph.
happosai July 13th, 2009, 11:44 PM ^^It is already on the news? What newspaper published that? :D
alcogoodwin July 13th, 2009, 11:50 PM Goodbye old logo!! We'll miss you!!!

She will survive in history and preservation with the RIHSPI, sometimes they even return way down the track when an operator suddenly realises that a long past is more important to current image.
Unfortunately it isn't all that was lost yesterday, as I got the extremely distressing news about the death of a friend I have known since the day I was born, one who has been friends with my family back since my grandparents were young.
He was an Aussie guy married to a lovely Filipina here called Rosie.
Since I was little they had lived only 7 doors from my grandmothers house, where I now live. However the terrible kids of the original landlords refused their requests to buy the house when the landlords had dies and they were forced to move two streets away.
Mick was one of the kindest, sweetest and caring people you could ever imagine. While not a railfan really, he took great interest in my railway hobby and most recently my involvement in Philippine railway preservation.
Please think of Mick at some stage today.
alcogoodwin July 13th, 2009, 11:51 PM Philippines - PNR all set for Bicol run, says Palace
Press Secretary Cerge Remonde said today the inauguration of the Philippine National Railway’s Bicol run will definitely push through.
“Tuloy na tuloy po ang inauguration ng PNR run,” Remonde said in a radio interview this afternoon.
The Metro Manila portion of the PNR network is part of the Strong Republic Transport System (SRTS) and the overall public transports system of the metropolis. It forms the backbone of all of Metro Manila’s regional rail services, extending to the suburbs and to provinces like Laguna.
The rehabilitation of the PNR aims to spur Philippine economic growth through an efficient railway system.
It was during President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo’s term that its rehabilitation has been actively pursued through various investments and projects.
The rehabilitation which has met obstacles like the large number of slum dwellers alongside the tracks, entailed reconstruction of rail bridges, replacement of rail tracks, replacement of current 35-kilo track with newer 50-kilo tracks and remodeling of the stations. The first phase, convering the entire Metro Manila portion of Northrail and Southrail, is set for completion this year.

Mojacko July 14th, 2009, 02:13 AM I embarked the T408 at Buendia also yesterday. I'm just wondering why they use 5009 instead of the regular 5002 engine? I really don't like the siren of that engine. I like the siren of 5002. :D
Thanks for the correction, happosai. (408, not 406; I probably misunderstood the Alabang ticket lady's penmanship).
Yes, I also find kinda weird - if not totally dislike - the 2 detached-note (E4 - soprano range, followed by G3 - tenor range) horn sound of some U6Bs (5009 is one example). The one on 5001 (G#3) and 5002 (E3) are kinda cool; but my favorite is the 3-note (C7 chord - C1, E3, and Bb4) produced by U14C locomotive 915. (This is evident in my previous two PNR rides - last June 8th and again on the 24th - I shot the older "PNR Buendia" videos from these trips. Another example of it is on Mithril Cloud's "Biyaheng 402" video).
In fact, the U14C/U15Cs are my favorite kind of locomotives in PNR's current fleet; I do hope they keep them around for some time, since (the drivers on Train 408 told me) they are the heaviest-duty locomotives most suited for the job of hauling the heavily-loaded trainsets on long trips such as to Bicol.
Speaking of which, perhaps the structural rehabilitation of the rest of the south line could mean ferrying the 3 stranded U15Cs - 916 in Lucena, and 918 and 922 in Naga - back to Manila for repair and re-entry into service?

Makes for an awesome TXT ringtone as well
Had the driver of the ROTEM car test a tad concerned at one stage. He looked everywhere when it rung.

Most suitable they have at the moment certainly, however all could use a major overhaul.
They are certainly very suitable for freight haulage, a more important factor that PNR seem not to have mentioned much of yett.

At least 918 is already in service and, from what I understand, 922 is ready to go as well.
I can't see any reason, other than attendance to the batteries, that 916 could not be got going in a short period.
Still, all really need a extensive overhaul before going back in to intensive service.

s40 July 14th, 2009, 02:48 AM Philippines - President - PGMA to launch new PNR trains in Tutuban
The North and South rail projects will be upgraded from the present-day single track to a dual-track system, (separate tracks for north and south bound trains to allow for simultaneous operation) and will be capable of speeds from approximately 80 to 130 kph.
mga sir - thank God for this progress, i hope we get to see more of these "success stories" happen. Every small incremental improvement in transportation, jobs, quality of life is needed - eto ang eventually mag papabago sa mentality of hopelessness at "pwede na yan" iba talaga kapag me vision at leadership ang government (sana less corruption lang)

The 50kilo tracks is fantasy. I hope they won't make the Southrail as Main Line South Rehabilitation as none of the lines are replaced by 50kg/m rails. Even the heaviest one installed between Tayuman and Espanya are still at 37kg/m.

Hi DC,
The area looks fantastic, I am sure she will be impressed.
I'm surprised they are making such a big thing publicly about her run by train to here. I got in trouble earlier for mentioning her movements in advance, siting security reasons.
Although I was made aware that it already appeared on a government site somewhere.
Anyway lets all just pray that it goes off without a hitch and that the president is as happy and as proud of her achievements as she should be.
DC, will you be going to the big event to try to get photos?
If not, could I get a copy of the above shot without the watermark for our report?
Best wishes
Brad

Akala ko commuter line rails sa PNR is 50KG, equivalent to heavy gauge rail.
U.S. Standard heavy gauge rail is 115 lbs/ft and for light rails is 100 lbs/ft for the subways. But the subways are now converting all light rails to heavy gauge.
PNR is cutting corners to minimum requirements. :ohno: :bash: like the center line of the rail ties is 22" in between, and for commuters and heavy transport rails should be heavy gauge. :bash:

alcogoodwin July 14th, 2009, 05:09 AM Ehem.. can we see pictures of those lovely ladies you took..
Happosai, your wish is my command.
The first of two posts this week has been finished on the Semi Retired Foamer (http://alcogoodwin.blogspot.com/) website.
Amongst all the lovely ladies are a number of shots of, what we all nickname, tincans. See below!

alcogoodwin July 14th, 2009, 06:12 AM ~~ PHILIPPINE FLEETLIST ~~
Hi guys,
Am planning quite a bit of work to this website tomorrow and will changing a number of things.
Firstly, after much consideration, I think we will limit it to just what is currently in existence and not what has been scrapped over the years.
The PRHS had started doing books on rollingstock there in conjunction with RIHSPI, and it seems ridiculous doubling up the workload on what is, essentially, suppoed to be a current fleetlist.
Scrapped items that are already there will probably exist for a while, but will slowly disappear. So if you want any information, now is probably the time to get it.
The book (maybe books if its easier to do in two parts) are still some way off, closer if done in two parts.
Our idea is something similar in publishing to the now unavailable Reg Carter books, self printed to make them affordable to railfans in the Philippines.
Any fans there who are able to help with a significant amount of related photos and/or information will recieve a free copy.
While we cannot hazard a release date as yet, society work keeps taking more and more time off me, it is envisaged that we will have it for sale there.
Not sure if the RIHSPI will be willing to carry it, but we are currently discussing possibilities with someone else in Manila who may wish to help.
Best wishes to all - say hi to the President for me today :-)

Palace July 14th, 2009, 06:45 AM Thanks for the correction, happosai.
Speaking of which, perhaps the structural rehabilitation of the rest of the south line could mean ferrying the 3 stranded U15Cs - 916 in Lucena, and 918 and 922 in Naga - back to Manila for repair and re-entry into service?
same goes for me. nothing beats the sound of the U14C/Bs. it's like a lullaby that's deeply embedded in my memory. i also vaguely recall the sound of the old Alsthom units that was last seen in Bicol as a freight loco.
which brings me to a post i made sometime ago in the PNR egroup about the sound of the new DMUs. it's puny compared to any of the GEs. it doesn't bring a sense of urgency to motorists trying to beat an incoming train to a level crossing.

Arciga_01 July 14th, 2009, 11:11 AM On the other hand, maganda un ginawa nila dun sa coaches! Sana tuloy tuloy ang PNR developments! :D
