View Full Version : LUANDA | Projects & Construction
Kwame September 6th, 2008, 10:06 AM Angola, off the Western coast of Africa, is expected to become the next big powerhouse of Africa. It's just now recovering from a Civil War that ended in 2002, and recent exploitation of natural resources has brought tremendous wealth to this previously war-torn nation. Recently, the Angolan government is discovering many ways to diversify their economy, so they won't be so dependent on oil, and that's where many of these projects come into play.

A major thanks goes out to all the Angola forumers and contributers, especially Matthias Offodile, Barragon, Tbite, skytrax, Hammelkar, Die Kapenaar, and BlackLion. Without them, a lot of these projects wouldn't have arrived to this site.
Check out the Angolan Forum Here (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1479) to see more stuff like infrastructure, completed pictures, under construction pictures, and more.
goschio September 6th, 2008, 10:12 AM Nice update. Just hope the ordinary people will benefit as well. Any industrial projects like factories etc.?
IMO luxury retail and mega museum complexes should be the last step of a national reconstruction.
Kwame September 6th, 2008, 10:21 AM ^^ Thanks. Speaking of that, there's a lot of housing in the pipeline for the many people who live in the make-shift shanty towns around Luanda. Here's an article explaining one of the many housing developments for the ones who may not be able to afford most of the above. This one is most recent, and was translated from Portuguese (sorry for the crappy translation).

PedroGabriel September 8th, 2008, 08:24 PM The Novo Sambizanga youtube video - a new uptown area for Luanda also talks about social housing, schools and other social welfare for the people that live in the area, so they'll create a new area with four quarters just for the poor. I guess a bit away from the rich.
I hope it keeps going like that. I'm personally interested in it's development, as I had some job offers to work there, still waiting for a better one.
Grauthue September 8th, 2008, 08:24 PM Lot of interesting projects!
Really hope Angola can build up a strong economy in other areas than just the oil industry. :okay:

Yes, I am also excited about the new quarters for people who currently live in the Musseque's around Luanda.
Good luck on finding a better job in Luanda, it probably won't be long until a better one comes around, a lot of investment is pouring into this country, and the amount of jobs flowing into this country is simply amazing, so it won't be long! :banana2:

This particular building's shell was actually constructed in 1975, but when the civil war broke out, the building was never completed, so it's shell sat abandoned for over 30 years, until recently it was approved to be completed.

Right now, the government is pouring billions of Dollars into rebuilding infrastructure that was previously destroyed like: Highways, Roads, Railroads, etc., and there is also a system of buses already in place. The trains that were previously destroyed, have been mostly rebuilt in Luanda, and they are getting impressive ridership, but I hope in the coming months, there will be a proposal for a Metro or something to alleviate more traffic. Visit the National Reconstruction (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=420119) thread if you want to keep yourself updated on the process.

Kwame September 20th, 2008, 01:55 AM $2 Billion "Lar do Patriota" to start construction of over 3,000 apartments in Luanda
9/19/08 6:51 PM
Works
Luanda - A total of three thousand apartments spread over 50 buildings will be constructed from the next week, within the residential complex "Lar do Patriota", in Luanda, an investment budget of two billion U.S. dollars.
In declarations to Angop, on the sidelines of the act that marked the launch of construction of buildings in an area of 800 square meters (80 hectares), the chairman of the cooperative, Antonio da Silva said the project includes the construction of a center gimnodesportivo, a of six star hotel, a shopping center (with shopping center with 80,000 square meters), center cultural and a residential area.
It argues that in the project area is also planned the construction of buildings with 10 to 25 floors and apartments of the type T1, T2 and T3, with one, two and three quarters respectively.
To join the houses built by the cooperative, young people concerned must be included in the Ministry of Youth and Sports (MJD) "Angola Jovem", which owns, initially, at least 200 homes.
As a second option to inform young people in the offices of "Lar do Patriota", in Luanda, to make contact with other forms of access.
The value for the purchase of a residence, he argued, the party, ranging from $100,000 and 250,000 U.S. dollars, while its real value in the market around USD $1,000,000 paid through bank.
On the other hand, said the chairman of the cooperative, is also built a green area with golf course and houses of high standard, a length of 600 hectares.
The choice of places of high standard, initially, said Antonio da Silva, is due to the fact that with the outcome of its success be able to finance the construction of other projects of low income.
Under its program of action, the cooperative provides implement projects of its kind in any country, starting by the provinces of Benguela, Huila and Huambo.
To mark the beginning of buildings were present members of the cooperative, the Ministry of Public Works, business Luata intended to electricity, SD (water and sanitation), Imotrade (golf course and houses of high standard) and MetroEuropa (bridges and floor).

Your Welcome. The only information on the second stadium that was released, was the excerpt I posted above. It's almost complete though, so soon that information will be released. :D
Really historic for Africa after decades of poverty. :master:
Yeah, hopefully other nations will follow the example of Angola, and appropriate funds in the right places. Many other countries can have this same kind of development happening, and the quality of life improve for their citizens, it's just the leaders have to make the right choices.
That city is booming like hell.
Thanks Buyckske, I was going to post that. Glad you're frequenting the Angola forum, there's loads more information there.
Ive heard Angola is the worlds fastest growing economy now
As of last year, it was the second fastest growing economy, growing at 21%. This year I wouldn't be surprised if it was the fastest now.
This is pretty impressive! Nice to see encouraging pictures out of Africa. Is there a large Chinese business presence in the country, by any chance? And what sort of Portuguese investment is going on?
Thanks. There is an enormous amount of Chinese investment in Angola. Angola is now China's largest supplier of oil, and many Chinese firms are helping rebuilding the country.
The relationship between Angola and Portugal is really unique. While Portugal is investing billions of dollars into Angola, Angola is at the same time investing billions of dollars into Portugal. With the current economic slump in Portugal, Angolan investment is welcome in open arms. Many Portuguese construction firms have also partnered with Angolan firms to construct many of these listed buildings.
There is also a growing relationship between Angola and Brazil also, with just recently Sonangol (National Oil Company) and Petrobas (Brazilian Oil Company) are going through talks to let Petrobas explore for oil in the northern coast. There's a specific thread talking about Angola-Brazil-Portugal relations, here's the link (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=25682530#post25682530) if you want to stay informed.

i hope so to my friend. But this wil NEVER happen. Look at South Africa: Wealth attracts loads of ``luck seekers``. So if you solve the housing problem for the 2? milion `poor` people, an other 10 milion will stand at the border ..............
by the way i love this discussion. I live and work in Angola, and things are happening here. Although i dont wanna think of the day the oil runs out here.....................

I understand what you're saying, but Angola has a different system of dealing with illegal migrants. The Angolan government has probably the most efficient border control in all of Africa. Just last year, they expelled 300,000 illegal migrants, and in the news you are constantly reading reports of the police detaining illegal migrants, and repatriating them back to their home country, if they lack the right papers.
by the way i love this discussion. I live and work in Angola, and things are happening here. Although i dont wanna think of the day the oil runs out here.....................
I'm glad you like the discussion. The day the oil runs out, is decades away from happening. If and when the oil runs out, the economy will already be developed. One of the main goals of the Angolan government is to diversify the economy, so it won't be so dependent on the sale of oil. The national oil company "Sonangol" is heavily involved in this process of diversification too. Read up on the ongoing economy news in the Economy thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=706542) in the Angola Forum. It's bilingual along with everything else, so everyone should be able to understand.
Kwame September 28th, 2008, 09:35 PM Draft for expansion of Belas Shopping Center Starts in 2009
24-09-2008 21:13
Luanda
Luanda - The second phase of construction of Belas Shopping mall in Luanda, begins to be implemented next year, with the construction of 64 shops, new spaces for leisure and entertainment, said, Wednesday, the manager of Marketing, Irmala Sousa.
The manager put forward this information to ANGOP, the purpose of inquiries from citizens about the expansion of this business to other provinces of the country, which, according to the company, there is no immediate intention of building units of Belas Shopping in other regions of Angola.
"For the provinces so far not yet. First we want to finish the six stages of the project here in Luanda Sul, and only after you finished and the guaranteed returns on investments can go to other regions of the country, "explained.
The Belas Shopping in Luanda had been scheduled for six stages in the same area, and currently, according to Irmala Sousa, is only completed the first phase, which includes the 100 stores, eight movie theaters, restaurants and entertainment spaces for children.
The second phase of the project will include a top floor with escalators, panoramic elevators, and external, larger stores with areas of interactive entertainment and leisure activities for adults and petizes.
Questioned about the return on investment at the mall, Irmala said he still failed to achieve the gains to be little time for the operation of the establishment, a year, but stressed there are profits in terms of demand.
"With the Belas people's behavior has changed a lot. The families and people on an individual visiting the center to watch movies, go shopping and take meals".
The mall has created five thousand jobs (direct and indirect) and expects to create about twice its size.
Belas Shopping is an investment company's Angolan Hogi Investments, with 70 percent of the shares, in partnership with the Brazilian Odebrecht, with 30 percent, inaugurated in March 2007.

The Holy Hope Foundation (ESF) signed a contract for the construction of its headquarters, which will be built in downtown Luanda. Called "Kilamba", the building contains 26 floors, including four basements for parking. With panoramic view of the bay of Luanda, the building is estimated at 75 million, begins to be erected within 60 days and work is completed in 30 months. The construction is borne by the consortium Noráfica is certain.
Afonso Van-Dúnem "Mbinda", Chairman of the Board of ESF, considers the work as a real asset to the foundation, inasmuch as it ensures better working conditions and convenience for employees and for companies wishing to establish themselves in the building. The officer's maximum ESF also informed that 80 percent of the facilities are sidelined with a view to profit on the investment.
The administrator of the consortium of companies and certain Noráfica, John Oliveira, said that the agreement is completed within the deadline. "It's a big advantage for us to trust and we will honor our commitments," said.

Luanda New Satellite City ~ Proposed ~ Mega Project
We carried out a master plan and infrastructure concept designs for a new satellite city to the south east of Luanda for an ultimate population 890,000. The 10,700 ha site will provide serviced plots & housing, employment, and community facilities to counteract informal urban expansions.
The new city is planned as a fully-integrated, self-sufficient urban community independent of the adjacent Luanda, especially in terms of transport infrastructure and employment. The master plan includes detailed parcellations relating to a time-bound phasing programme. Land budgets, cost indictors and development regulations were prepared to support the implementation.

Torre Kilamba ~ Office ~ Approved ~ 26 Fl.
The Kilamba Tower is located in the Bay of Luanda, Angola, and is the seat of the Holy Hope Foundation.
The Foundation, an institution of importance in Angola, and needs a symbolic building for offices, whose first floors serve as headquarters of the institution and the rest of its 26 floors are offices of high yield.
The tower is not only recognized for its height. What they will do differently to the Tower Kilamba is its design, qualities that should have functional characteristics of a commercial building and at the same time an identifiable project in the daytime and nighttime landscape of the city.
To achieve this goal, and at the same time reduce the high heat load, the facades will be projected on the basis of umbrellas, rolling with a perimeter-cleaning vidroc and location of equipment capable. This climate protection, is folded along its height, so that despite its simplicity constructive, this film of "umbrellas", it leaves cavities in the corners, and allows, through artificial lighting, change the lights and shadows during the night as a true icon.
The Kilamba tower has 26 floors, including ground-floor and two basement floors. All entrances of the building open to a small square that holds the traditional landscape of the Luanda Waterfront.

hkskyline January 24th, 2009, 05:30 AM Football: Angola pours millions into African Nations Cup
19 January 2009
Agence France Presse
Oil-rich Angola is pouring millions of dollars into new stadiums, hotels and airports to get ready for the 2010 African Nations Cup, which officials say will kick off on schedule in less than 12 months.
The decision to award Nations Cup - known as CAN - to Angola surprised some who did not believe the former Portuguese colony could get itself ready in time, having only ended a 27-year civil war in 2002.
But according to the organising committee, stadium construction is running to schedule and preparations are well underway.
"In relation to the construction of stadiums, the schedule will be met," CAN's marketing director Manuel Mariano told journalists after a meeting with top government officials last week.
Four new stadiums in Benguela, Lubango, Cabinda and the capital Luanda, where the final will be held, are being built by Chinese construction companies.
While no figures have been released about the costs of organising the three-week tournament or building the stadiums, the national airport company says it's spending more than 270 million dollars refitting and rebuilding airports in Luanda, Benguela and Lubango.
A major priority for organisers after the stadiums is making sure there is enough accommodation. Currently hotel rooms in Angola are few and far between, costing as much as 300 dollars a night and booked up months in advance.
According to the organising committee, 30 hotels are being built, 16 of them in Luanda, and ordinary Angolans will rent rooms to visitors.
Another key concern is the potential cost to visitors because Luanda, according to London-based human resources consultant ECA International, is the most expensive city in the world with a litre of milk costing three dollars and a pizza and beer as much as 50 dollars.
The committee has also pledged to make sure the notoriously difficult visa application process would be looked at to prevent delays for spectators coming to Angola.
But, perhaps used to the daily challenges of bad roads, high prices and lack of services, most Angolans are confident the competition will be a success.
Silvio Capuepue, an Angolan sports journalist, believes the Nations Cup is a catalyst for development.
"Hosting the 2010 Nations Cup is without a doubt speeding up the reconstruction of the country after the war, especially in the host cities," he said.
"Angolans are happy and are conscious of the magnitude of the event. People are starting to see an impact in their normal lives, those that had no jobs for such a long time are now having jobs and are being able to bring money home.
"And in terms of the football, hosting the tournament motivates and grooms the growing talents that are coming up in the country."
He said he was confident the stadiums would be ready on time and that the organisation would run smoothly.
"We have hosted three African basketball tournaments and two handball tournaments so I believe we have the experience. In 2007 people did not think we would be ready in time for Afrobasket, but we were. With the same strength, the same capacity and the same willing, we will make sure we are ready."
Angola’s national team - known as Palancas Negras after the country’s extremely rare sable antelope - have had a tough time on the pitch and failed to qualify for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
A coaching reshuffle saw Mabi de Almeida take over from Luis Oliveira Goncalves and he has pledged to do his best for the home crowd during the 2010 tournament.
Angola's Prime Minister Paulo Kassoma said last week that hosting the tournament would boost the country's self esteem and appealed to Angolans to support their national team.
"It's our responsibility to win the 2010 Nations Cup and prove we are Angolan. We want to show the capacity of Angolans to organise high-level competitions."
The tournament is played every two years and was won by Egypt for a record sixth time in Ghana last year.
This will be the first Nations Cup hosted by a Portuguese-speaking country.

skytrax February 3rd, 2009, 01:21 AM New Fortaleza Shopping

Want to go there one day once the astronomical prices have normalized. Also the difference between rich and poor must be leveled soon or the country will sink into violence and crime (see South Africa or Brazil).

Huti March 27th, 2009, 10:22 PM any problems with global crisis?
Kwame March 27th, 2009, 10:37 PM Of course, what country hasn't been effected?
This global economic crisis has effected the projected economic growth of Angola (which was forcasted to be around 11% this year, but now downgraded to around 4-7%), but foreign direct investment has stayed relatively strong this year. One good thing about this crisis is that it has urged the Angolan government to diversify the economy by focusing less on the oil and gas industry, and more on other industries like agriculture, services, manufacturing, etc.
If you're interested in reading news dealing with the economy of Angola, check out the economy thread (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=706542) in the Angola forum. Cheers! :)

Luanda isn't the only African city going through a building boom right now. Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Lagos, Dakar, Libreville, Bata, Malabo, Kigali, Kampala,, Durban, Tunis, Algiers, and Accra, to name a few, are all building a lot of building and infrastructure currently. But Luanda and Angola overall have the most constructions going on.
Kwame March 31st, 2009, 05:40 AM Thanks for the pics YATB. Here's an article explaining just how fast the economy has been growing these last few years.
Angolan Economy Records 92 Percent Growth in Four Years
3/30/09 7:18 PM
Luanda – Angolan minister of Economy, Manuel Nunes Júnior, said Monday in Luanda that the country’s economy recorded an average growth rate of 9.6 percent between 1989 and 2007 and a 92.4 percent real growth from 2004 to 2007.
Manuel Júnior, who was speaking at the opening of the Angola-Netherlands Economic-Business Forum, stressed that the Angola economy is among the world’s most growing, following the consolidation of the political stability.
According to the minister, the results show that in four years alone, the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has almost doubled which, he added, is remarkable, as it corresponds to an average annual real growth rate of approximately 17.8 percent.
He stated that Angola has been guaranteeing the national reconstruction and setting steady steps towards the macro-economic stability and development of the basis for a strong economic development.
The minister asserted that the political stability and investments in the rehabilitation and modernisation of the productive infrastructures have been leading to a major flow of goods and people, increase of local and foreign private investment and alteration to the basic structures of the economy.
Mentioning the result of the diversification of the Angolan economy, Manuel Júnior told the Dutch business people that since 2006, the non-oil GDP has been growing at a higher pace than the oil one which, according to him, is a positive sign.
He also mentioned that the national currency (Kwanza) has been stable, playing more effectively its role as a trade and reserve value.
The minister noted that from the period of hyper-inflation of 1996 that reached an accumulated rate of 3,000 percent, the country is recording over the last few years an inflation of about 10 percent (12.2 percent in 2006, 11.79 in 2007 and 12.8 in 2008).
Manuel Junior assured that although affected by the world financial and economic crisis, the Angolan economy will continue to grow in 2009, within an environment of stability and with a rate above three percent (population’s growth rate).
To him, it is fundamental that Angola continues with its poverty and famine fight programme, through the main projects of rehabilitation of infrastructures and foment to the productive activity, coupled with institutional reforms.

The commercial area occupies 6,340 square metres, whereas the residential one has 6,810 square metres and the offices take an area of 16,162 metres.

All the building's compartments are occupied, with some already in operation by the owners, most of them multinational companies.
Located in the "Marechal Tito" street, the construction of the building has lasted four years (started in 2004) in charge of civil building firm "Teixeira Duarte".

domtoren January 4th, 2010, 12:34 PM Hello, as court interpreter I have often had legal cases of Angolan people living here illegally in Holland or refugees who have to return and who affirm that it's unsafe to return to Angola due to war aftermath, but this thread shows that Luanda noise pollution seems to come from construction and traffic and NOT from kalashnikovs.
What is in fact the actual situation regarding safety and economic prospects in Angola, is there still unsafety and mass unemployment?

angolanchico January 19th, 2010, 07:39 PM Hello, as court interpreter I have often had legal cases of Angolan people living here illegally in Holland or refugees who have to return and who affirm that it's unsafe to return to Angola due to war aftermath, but this thread shows that Luanda noise pollution seems to come from construction and traffic and NOT from kalashnikovs.
What is in fact the actual situation regarding safety and economic prospects in Angola, is there still unsafety and mass unemployment?
Yes , Angolan`s safety and unemployment still the same but less human violence. In fact its probaly Africa`s less criminal rate in the whole african territory. Less violence than south america for sure.
And only the capital in this country is the most expesive place in the world. But people who work there claim that, they receive 3 times more money than any european country. But also some people caim that the salary wages are not the same for nationlas and foreigns. Foreigns receive more money than nationals of Angola.
The goverment is actualy investing millions on economy and now even more on agriculture. The health system there is Bad. only private hospitals and clinic are better equiped, local people cannot use them because, its too expensive and because people need membership cards, to enter private hopitals and clinics.
The contructions of new public hospitals and clinics doesnt have too much informations, only those who were built for ORANGE CAN ANGOLA 2010 Games.
Seems like the Goverment is giving priority to economy and private housig for those foreign workers who wish to work in Angola, rather than Health and Education.
However Human development index is Rising. dont know how!!!!
Angolan government doesnt say much about its administration:ohno:
I wish BBC and others could investigate more about this issue.
And regarding about Angolan illigal imigrants in the rest of the world, its better for them to stay where they are because, if they dont have at least a degree university qualification, they will not have a chance to survive in their own country because for them its not just 3 times harder but probaly 5 times. Many of them dont have a place to live in Angola because their houses were destroyed or occupated during war. and its very hard to reclaim a property in Angola our Courts, lawyers, Judges dont work propely and the people have to wait long to get a "NO" response.
Angola its only a good place for Gratuated people ! what is happening in Angola right now ,Happened Before the independece in "Colonial Times".
More for Govermente and white people business and less for local people.
In my view they are repeating the same mistake that lead to 2 revolutions, Our goverment doesnt learn from Mistakes.

Eddy Nicolay July 30th, 2010, 11:07 PM People, we all know that africans(majority) think about nothing but stealing.
This happens all over the continent, and I should say that ma country is the one with the lowest indexes of disparity, unlike namibia, south africa etc... Moreover, a country does grow up with foreign investment.
Take a look to the US. Majority of private sector is owned by Arabs and Israelis...
Shall we smile and be happy that ANgola is to be the wealthiest, and most advanced nation in Africa
Eu amo-te Angola. Já só faltam 2 anos, e estaremos juntos juntinhos... Como nos velhos tempos...

daneo January 28th, 2011, 05:27 PM great to see al this progress.
it would be cool to compare a skyline pic of 2001 with a 2011 one, the differences will be enormous.
Campo Do Paz is for me the best project going on in Luanda and in the whole of Africa.
how are the changes that its getting U/C this year?

kerouac1848 May 26th, 2011, 10:46 PM Great pictures and nice developments.
Are they are plans for a mass-transit system or even just a few tram/light rail lines? I know they're building some urban motorways, but any large city needs a proper public transport system to function properly.
