huaiwei November 11th, 2003, 09:01 PM 6.5/10. I am giving it slightly more marks simply due to its era.
RafflesCity November 12th, 2003, 12:24 AM Its simple enough and not as bad as some 60s towers.
7/10
Gulcrapek November 12th, 2003, 12:47 AM Funny how it's called Square.
6.5/10
Trances November 12th, 2003, 11:26 AM Land Mark tower in the city of Sydney and because its not so tall any more gives some great views of the density of Sydney
While feature less in some ways it not boring due to it height and simple symmetry that just points up with no distractions!
8/10
finn November 12th, 2003, 12:16 PM Here it is on Sydney's skyline in 1967, when it was just finishing construction. It was Australia's tallest building when it was finished! By comparing it with the other ugly boxes on the skyline, you can see why it was a big deal when it was first completed!
http://image.sl.nsw.gov.au/apa/46/d7_46474.jpg
Also, it is called Australia Square because it sits in a great public plaza, with cafes/retail and a fountain, that is very popular with office workers at lunchtime!
CULWULLA November 12th, 2003, 01:09 PM Fabian, you havent sold it that well! inform everyomne more about it!!
It was actually built 1964-67.
Its called Australia Square Tower NOT Australia Square.
storeys-46 not 48.
It was Australia's tallest building from 1967-76.
Still houses the worlds largest revolving restaurant at 41m dia at 153m! Designed by world renowned architect Harry seidler. It was on completion the worlds tallest lightweight concrete structure!!!
Its now heritage listed and remains one of Sydney's treasures.
heres a pic i took recently

Actually I don't mind Australia Square - it's better than what Harry's been churning out in the past 25 years.
But only because of the glass and the fact that this one doesn't have those ugly sunshades that Harry just cut-n-pastes onto every tower he designs - Grovensor Place, Shell House, QV1, the list goes on.

Was never too attracted to this building, but out of respect to its historic significance, gains points. Still is tall and doesn't look its age.
SteelCity32 July 6th, 2004, 11:40 PM 7/10...not bad, kind of boring
Bronteboy July 28th, 2004, 03:45 PM hmmm,, a grudging 8.5 because of its significance and era. In newspaper series a prominent architect recently raved abt this one's iconic status, rating it the most significant high-rise ever built in Aust., because of its techniques for the time. but never liked seidler's work - and cd never quite accept that the seminal design shift from square to round, which it represented, was such a stupendous leap of the imagination - and lots of precedents in ancient history. Qutab Minar in Delhi springs to mind. Perhaps this is being too hard: again, worked in a magazine office next to this one once, and used to lunch in the famous forecourt, which is undoubtedly superb and the real breakthrough in CBD planning to my mind, which seidler repeated at MLC. A now largely-forgotten story at the time of AST construction was that Siedler and Lend Lease wanted the whole block through to Hunter Street, but the LL bids for the motley collection of buildings on the Hunter St side were dismissed by owners (mostly privately owned by my erstwhile employers) as "arrogant" (no, they couldn't have meant Harry!). Similar story to Chifley square, where the old curved Qantas Blg and concave Wentworth Hotel were meant to be the first of irregular shapers surrounding an enclosed "square" (until the bloody-minded Commonwealth stuck a square public service stump straight down the middle of the whole thing ! Well, guess we've moved on a bit since then... 8.5 for the round Australia Square Tower.
DamienK December 5th, 2004, 04:06 PM Graceful tower, for something built in the 60s. 8/10.

http://www.imagestation.com/picture/sraid79/pa68eac1f636d03a646578f0c0fb77dba/fb218e5c.jpgHalf of the 47th floor is the Orbit Bar, the other half is The Summit Restaurant. The floor rotates once every hour and built on a huge hydraulic mechanism.
As shown in the first pic post by Fabian, it is awesome standing directly beneath OZ Square Tower (170m/558ft) @ its base.
8.5 from moi.
Some more pics.

Barret November 7th, 2007, 09:55 AM Couldn't agree more with Brendan. For the 60's its design was revolutionary, its round floor plans are great piece of engineering innovation, and its height ground braking in its day. I think this building deserves a higher rating. 9/10
