maasin doesnt deserved to have an airport and sogod has no vast plain land to build an airport.there is an airport in the nearby hilongos but to date no commercial or even private plane who used the airport.why not upgrade this airport to served the southern part of the island.i remember back in the 90s, Aerolift advertised to have service in the area but i dont think if it was possible since aerolift lasted shortly.i heard also that this airport is very short and can't handle commercial flights.

the airport in Maasin is not accessible by large vehicles.

Simple archeticture but a peaceful place to pray. Its one of few churches where none of its side is directly along a major street hence, sounds of passing vehicles is not a disturbance.

At the left side of the church is a four storey Diocesan center while its right side is the building of the Sister's of the Poor congregation protecting the church from the sounds of passing vehicles. While the street fronting the church is a minor street where only few vehicles pass by.

Am not sure if repainting will do because the finishing material of the buiding is made out of boracay feebles. perhaps a little brushing is enough to get rid of accumulated moss. What I mean with well maintained refers to its interior and rooms and comfort rooms.

Thanks for the memories. I was only ten years old the first time I visited Maasin in 1969. We also landed at Hilongos on a flight from Manila in a PAF C-47. Then it was a long drive from there to Maasin. Since there is no longer Supercat service from Cebu, how do people get to Maasin today?

MAASIN CITY — Some P40 million has been included in the 2009 budget of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC) for the extension of the runway of this city’s airport at Barangay Panan-awan, according to Rep. Roger Mercado.

In addition, Rep. Mercado reported that he had requested another P50 million for the construction of the airport terminal building, in which P10 million was already released.

This was revealed by the Southern Leyteno solon in an informal chat with local mediamen at his District Office at Barangay Abgao recently.

He said he had worked to source funds to extend the runway and have it listed in the DOTC’s 2008 budget, but DOTC Secretary Leandro Mendoza told him there was no more appropriation for that year.

The DOTC secretary, however, assured him to program the airport runway extension project for the 2009 allocation, including an initial release for the terminal building.

During the Provincial Development Council (PDC) meeting last month, Gov. Damian Mercado informed that SeaAir, a private airliner, had inspected the airport and requested for an additional 300-400 meters of runway.

Gov. Mercado said funding for such an expansion had been secured, the project already bidded, coupled with an initial release for work on the terminal building.

He said he was confident within the year or next year, SeaAir will open its route for a commercial flight at Maasin airport.

Rep. Mercado echoed the confidence expressed by his younger brother. (Bong Pedalino)

Catbalogan, Samar (July 6) -- Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Samar are not necessarily affected by the ill effects of the so called global financial crisis.

According to Danilo Gabin, owner/manager of Super JEED, mussel crackers producer based in Jiabong, Samar he has more outlets especially now that Robinsons Tacloban has opened.

He shared that his first time earnings of P 15,000 at Robinsons is a welcome development for this small-time businessman.

However, he lamented that mussels in his hometown Jiabong are scarce these days, though he tries very hard to contact mussel producers to sustain his business.

It will be recalled that Jiabong's mussel farms have experienced a downfall in production where a bag of 50 kilos then was worth P200 last year, it is now pegged at P700.00.

But despite the additional production cost, it has not generally affected him, and his business.

Although some adjustments have to be made, he continues producing his mussel crackers not only for his family but for the families of his workers who rely on him for their income.

The benefits although not comparable to the best productive years of Jiabong mussels, still tide them through and even yields some more.

In fact, he said that he has started repairing his production center just adjacent to his home.

He added that the Tacloban Airport 'Pasalubong Center' has been making orders on a regular basis.

DTI recognizes the role of Gabin and others SMEs in providing livelihood opportunities for Samar's rural folks.

Today, DTI Samar invited Gabin and other SMEs to hear from line agencies the different programs or even funding schemes that the government led by PGMA can offer. (PIA-Samar)

Catarman, Northern Samar (6 July) -- The distance between Cebu City and Catarman, Northern Samar could be poles apart but this does not pose as a problem to the Office of the Ombudsman for the Visayas which has now rightfully gained a new title as "Mobilizer" of social services.

The determined staff of the Ombudsman have kept landline wires burning and mobile phones ringing for the past week to negotiate and coordinate the activities of the caravan participants. Their efforts have resulted with twenty five government agencies favorably responding to the call of the Office of the Ombudsman for "One Visayas Against Corruption".

A great number of these agencies would still come from the regional offices in Tacloban City and all of them will troop to Catarman to participate in the said caravan of social services on July 8, Wednesday where the Province of Northern Samar will play host.

It will be a one-day affair according to the information unit of the Office of the Ombudsman. There will be a one-hour opening ceremony at 8:30 AM to formally mark the start of the activities. And while the participating agencies will each provide their services to the public at the Sacred Heart Plaza, Deputy Ombudsman Pelagio S. Apostol will hold a dialogue-conference with Governor Raul Daza, Vice-governor Antonio Lucero, members of the Provincial Board and Northern Samar mayors at 10:00 AM at the Governor's Conference Room.

Among the services that will be provided by the participating agencies are medical and dental services, skills demonstrations, licensing and permits, job opportunities and legal counselling.

A Public Accountability Multi-Sectoral Forum is scheduled at 2:00 PM at the Ibabao Hall of the Provincial Capitol. Representatives from various sectors are expected to attend the said forum which aims to raise the awareness of the people about the ills of corruption. Deputy Ombudsman Pelagio S. Apostol and Assistant Ombudsman Virginia P. Santiago will serve as the resource speakers.

The provinces of Antique, Iloilo, Aklan and Cebu have already been recipients of the Ombudsman Caravan of Social Services. (PIA-Northern Samar)

Completion of new Legislative Building a dream come true  Vice-Gov. Maamo


MAASIN CITY — The completion of this new legislative building where we are standing now “is a dream come true.”

This was the statement of Vice-Governor Miguel Maamo in his speech during the blessing and inauguration ceremony on the eve of the 49th Founding Day anniversary of the province of Southern Leyte.

The blessing was officiated by Rev. Celso Paller, while Governor Damian Mercado cut the ceremonial ribbon in the presence of Congressman Roger Mercado, SP members and Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. of the Department of Defense.

Secretary Teodoro had arrived from Manila via an Army chopper that landed at the Maasin Pier around 3:30 p.m. He was invited by the Mercado brothers as the guest of honor and speaker of the Southern Leyte Beauty Pageant, which was participated in by 19 young ladies from 18 municipalities and one city.

Maamo disclosed that the plan to have a new legislative building was at first just “a wishful thinking because we don’t have the necessary budget. So we did the construction phase by phase whenever we have the money.” With the support of the Governor Mercado and Congressman Mercado, he said, they were able to go on with the construction of the building until its completion. He expressed his profuse thanks to both of them for their financial support. The Congressman has given a total of P6 million, the Governor P5 million in behalf of the provincial government, while the office of the Vice-Governor has shelled out P5 million.

SP Member Albert Esclamado, however, clarified that P3, 234,000 was added to complete the project. The total amount of the building’s construction has reached to P19, 234,000 instead of P18 million as earlier stated by Eng, Fernando Moralde of the Provincial Engineer’s Office who supervised its construction.

The new building, nestled in 800 square meters lot, is located just a few meters away from the Provincial Capitol Building . It is very near to the Capitol gymnasium that is partly occupied by the DILG office.

Defense Secretary Teodoro, whose arrival coincided in time for the blessing and inauguration of the new legislative building in the afternoon, said in his short speech that the construction of the new building is a visible sign of development of the province and that the investment on public structure is part of its modernization.

He also confirmed the incumbent Governor’s slogan that putting the slogan of unity, solidarity and teamwork (UST) into action, any tangible project can be accomplished. He further urged officials of the province to coordinate with the Office of the Civil Defense, particularly that July is declared as a National Disaster Consciousness Month.

The Defense Secretary was accompanied here by Major General Arthur Tabaquero, Navy Commodore Boboy Balanon and Col. Facada. Recently, the Defense Secretary has donated P100 million in behalf of the Office of the Civil Defense for a river control project in Sogod town as a disaster mitigating measure.

The affair was attended also by some provincial capitol employees, SP members, Maasin Mayor Maloney Samaco, City Councilors led by Vice-Mayor Effie Abiera-Sabandal, some barangay officials, the press and some PNP and Army officers.

Meanwhile, the winner of the Southern Leyte Beauty Pageant contest held in the evening at the Capitol Playground was Earlene K. Lancour of Macrohon. First runner-up was Safa Nesmarie U. Rodas of Maasin City while the second runner-up was Daine Marie G. Gloria of San Juan. One of the functions of Ms. Lancour is to promote the province’s tourist spots and its products. Wala pang classification kung ilang star. It has to be accredited first by the DOT. With respect to Gaisano...the latest update is that the tenants of the public market where it will be built has already received nootices to vacate. But as usual the reaction is to question the same... just don't know na kung ano na nangyari. Ill make an update when i go home next week.

that's according to some of my friends from Tacloban and Borongan. I'm planning to be home this coming Sept. for the Borongan's fiesta celebration and they told me that news.

That actually augurs well for Ormoc, too since passengers from West Coast Leyte, Biliran and Southern Leyte who are still used to fly from Tacloban will be forced to use the Ormoc airport considering Guiuan's distance.

Seaside Drive Inn ang oldest yata followed by San Joaquin Inn.Yung Seaside nagrenovate na at nagdagdag ng building. Ang San joaquin ganun pa rin. Just dont know if they renovated the interiors.

Unfortunately at that time the Peso counterpart of the project was not enough (this is a foreign assisted project), so they prioritized Bacolod. it is only now that they are implementing this because of fiscal improvements.FYI.

COKALIONG SHIPPING LINES TO LAUNCH CEBU-CALBAYOG-CEBU ROUTE

Mayor Mel Sarmiento was in Cebu upon the invitation of the Cokaliong Shipping Lines. He was on hand for the launch of the shipping company's eighth ship the M/V Filipinas Ozamis. The event took place last Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Pier 1, Cebu City.

According to Cokaliong Shipping CEO Chester Cokaliong, the launching of the new vessel will allow his company to serve Calbayog City via the port of Manguino-o in Tinambacan District. They will utilize the M/V Filipinas Dinagat vessel which used to serve Iligan City. The ship will soon ply the Calbayog-Cebu route three times weekly.

The entry of a new player in the Calbayog-Cebu route is a welcome news to many Calbayognons. The City Government of Calbayog has invited the Cokaliong group to serve the route way back in 2006.

Definitely Guiuan will have commercial flights flying there soon. In fact binibilisan ang repair ng airport para makabiyahe na commercial flights especially so that Calicoan is being promoted by DOT.

have you heard the news about Caticlan airport? All Cebu Pacific, PAL Express and Zest Airways turbopros are not allowed now to fly there because of its short runway which is prone to accidents.
Only small planes are allowed like SEAIR's 32-seater Dornier-328 and 19-seater L-410.:D

But the defunct Asian Spirit's BAe 146 jet is way smaller than A319, and it used to land also in Calbayog and Catarman airports. :D

Bae 146-100/200 are jet powered but it requires only a shorter runway. It can even land in Caticlan. It requires at least 900m runway. It is the only jet powered aircraft which requires a shorter runway. The reason why it was phased out by zest air (former asian soirit) and opted for MA60 its because of fuel efficiency. The Bae 146 has four engines.FYI.

Trip To Samar Tourist Destination To Cease Being ‘Boring’

For several years now, tourists going to the No. 1 tourist destination in Eastern Visayas, the 840-hectare Sohoton Natural Bridge National Park in Basey, Samar, have to take a “boring” two-hour trip to the park. But this “unexciting” trip to the nature park would soon be a thing of the past after about 20 residents of Barangay Inuntan, an upstream village 18 kilometers from the Basey town proper, banded together to provide services to tourists as a form of livelihood. Members of the Sohoton Services Association (SSA), a non-profit organization, would be providing caving guide, kayaking guide, food catering and other tourism-related services such as setting up souvenir shops and rest houses. In late July, the group received from the Department of Tourism a donation of six kayaks with paddles, life vests, uniforms, hard hats, head lamps, flashlights and medical kits. These gears would be used by guides and tourists in going to the Sohoton natural park, which was established in 1935 and is being managed by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources. The park boasts of an extensive cave system with unique rock formations.

During the “dry run” last July 24 shortly after the turnover ceremony, tourism and municipal officials, together with some visitors, went to Sohoton park, some using kayaks in the river cruise of over a kilometer. Wearing his new cave guide uniform with hardhat, head light, flashlight and rubber boots, Richard Alibado, the president of SSA, led the tour of the Sohoton cave. Alibado, in his mid-20s, first narrated the history of the place – which was inhabited as far back as the Stone Age and had been a burial place of early people, a Mecca for local shamans and a hideout of local revolutionaries. And as they walked on, he pointed to rock formations of different shapes and sizes while he told the tourists the name of each type of cave rock including how long it takes to form the rocks. “What they would be doing is not only to bring in tourists to Sohoton but to also explain to them what is inside the cave,” said director Rolando Cañizal of the Office of Tourism Development Planning, DOT central office.

About P500,000 has been earmarked for the project, dubbed as Community-Based Sustainable Tourism Project (Ecotourism Product Development Livelihood Creation Project), according to Cañizal. He added that Basey municipal government’s counterpart came in the form of accommodation, food and the training venue. According to Cañizal, they would also try to make the long boat ride from Basey town proper more enjoyable to tourists by providing guides who would give information on places they would pass by. The scenery along the way is bucolic and this is what tourists want to see, he said. In fact, he added, another group was also formed to take care of the area from Basey to Inuntan – the Basey Tourism Services Association. Erwin Balane, chief of the DOT central office’s Regional Development Planning Division, said they started the training of SSA members with a consultative workshop last year. This was followed this year by training on business planning, business management, cave guiding, kayaking, ecotourism, marketing and first aid, he added.


Enjoyable experience

“We want to make them professional tourism services providers,” Balane said. He disclosed that the project would be launched during the summer season next year, with Tourism Secretary Ace Durano in attendance. They would first link the services providers with local tour and travel operators to ensure that many tourists would visit Basey, he explained. Mayor Estorninos said the municipal government would soon be also providing a visitors’ lounge and a souvenir center in Inuntan. DOT Regional Director Karen Rosa Tiopes said that with this new setup tourists would have an enjoyable experience at the Sohoton nature park, the No. 1 tourist destination in Eastern Visayas. Basey is about 30 km from Tacloban City and could be reached after a 45-minute land travel. In Basey town, tourists can seek assistance from the municipal tourism information office.

Allen has highest standard of living but remains 5th class

ALLEN, Northern Samar – Among the 24 municipalities in this province, Allen town has the highest standard of living, according to the result of a recent study conducted by the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).

This was revealed by Mayor Laureana D. Suan in an inclusive one on one interview with this writer.

Mayor Suan said she was surprised when she was congratulated by her fellow local chief executives when they have met in one special occasion in Catarman town. Later, she learned that Allen has the highest standard of living in the entire province.

Having two ferry terminals, the town of Allen is considered the gateway to Luzon and Mindanao and it is also the center of commerce in Balicuatro Area of this province.

Moreover, this town was adjudged for two consecutive years as the most child-friendly municipality in Region 8.

However, in spite of these good developments for Allen, there is one thing that is bothering the people here, especially Mayor Suan and that is this town is presently classified as “fifth class municipality.”

The main reason, according to Mayor Suan, is that Allen is very small. It has a total land area of 47.6 square kilometers. Because of it, the income of Allen especially from real property tax is also very small.

Allen became very small because two of its large barangays developed into two new towns – San Isidro and Victoria.

The original land area of Allen was 490.2 square kilometers. When San Isidro became a town, 255.9 square kilometers were taken from Allen and when Victoria also became a town another 186.7 square kilometers were subtracted from the mother town.

Only about 10 percent of Allen’s original land area remained as its present territory.

Mayor Suan said in spite of the fact that Allen is very progressive and the recent survey that Allen has the highest standard of living in the entire province, it remains fifth class municipality and she admitted that it is very hard to change.

She pointed out that Allen is really “wrongly classified.”

She informed that she has been trying her best to change the classification of Allen. She has already gone to various offices like the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and Department of Finance (DOF) and she has already consulted President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo about it.

However, she added all her efforts have failed because the classification of towns is mandated by the Local Government Code which is a law.

The only way to reclassify Allen is to amend the law, she added. (Garry A. Vacunawa)

Uniting the people is Mayor Suans legacy to Allen



ALLEN, Northern Samar — The greatest achievement of Mayor Laureana Dubongco Suan as the town’s chief executive is not material thing but the strong sense of unity of her constituents.

Mayor Suan said in an exclusive interview that she has successfully united the people of Allen and she successfully let the people set aside politics.

She recalled that when she started serving as Mayor in 2001, people were divided by politics. “Kun deri nagbubutos sa imo deri ngani sa imo nakitawa, deri sa imo nakiistorya pero gin-change ko iton little by little,” she said.

She added that she set herself as an example by accommodating anybody who come to here office regardless of political appellation. “An visible evidence na talaga nagsarayo an mga taga Allen an result san last election na talaga landslide. Ngatanan na ginsugad ko sa mga tawo na mao ine an butusan ta mao gud an nagana sa Allen,” she explained.

Mayor Suan is on her third term as Mayor of this town. Her term will expire a year from now.

Aside from uniting the people of Allen, Mayor Suan informed that she had a lot of other big accomplishments or projects like the establishment of the new transport terminal and other infrastructure projects.

She also informed that she has successfully increased the town’s revenue or income and the transaction in the municipal government has become very transparent. Now, she added that the municipal government has no more payable financial obligation.

“I was able to prove na talaga gusto ko na ako an iroy, ngatanan na mga tawo puro ko mga anak, magsarayo, magburulig, so nahimo ko iton,” Mayor Suan said. (Garry A. Vacunawa)

Hinundayan marks '100'

MANILA, Philippines – On July 21 to 31, Hinundayan, Southern Leyte (hometown of Regine Velasquez’s mom Teresita Ansong-Velasquez), will celebrate its 100th founding anniversary. Winnie Castillo, Pork and Beans, the Wow Girls and three promising singers (Cecille Oreta, Michelle Monsayac and Raisa Mayer) will perform in a show on July 30.

Joining them from Maasin, Leyte, is Brian Giles, 2009 grand champion of the Leyte Idol Singing contest, a brainchild of Leyte Gov. Carlos Jericho Rosales.

The entertainment package is a gift to her townmates from Captain Romel and Lisa Candingan (photo).

On July 31 at 7 a.m., Msgr. Nestor Astillo will celebrate a Pontifical Mass, to be followed by a grand parade.

Expected guests are Southern Leyte Gov. Damian Mercado, Rep. Roger Mercado (of the lone district of Southern Leyte) and Rep. FLorencio Noel (An Waray Party List).

Hinundayan Mayor Evelyn Lee and Vice Mayor Alfredo Lagumbay will launch Hinundayan’s Opas Festival.

@Calbayognon, tanong lang. Bumaba ba ang sumasakay sa PAL Express sa Calbayog? KAsi nakita ko sa Timetable sa PAL site, Q300 na ang ginagamit nila...

I am not aware of the real reason pero according to the agent of PAL who is also the agent in Catarman (EQV na rin sila) kulang daw ang Q400 nila dahil under repair ung dalawa. Pero sabi niya bumibiyahe daw Q400 pag Sundays and Fridays. Pero eventually daw babalik sa Q400.That's for both Calbayog and Catarman.
